Golf is brought to you by American Family Insurance, Folk
Park Place, Wild Rock Golf Club, Mercedes Benz of Madison, TPC,

(00:23):
and Novada. Bob's Now from TPC Wisconsin in Madison.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Here's your foursome for Talking Golf.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer, Dennis Tizziani, Wisconsin broadcaster, Haull
of Famer, Paul Brown, Wisconsin's premier golf reporter, Gary Demado,
and Mike Heller.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
What are you?
Speaker 4 (00:44):
I'm nothing.
Speaker 5 (00:44):
I guess I'm just the guy who talks first.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Whatever.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
Yeah, welcome into Talking Golf on this beautiful Monday night
in Wisconsin, where today the temperatures are summer like and
spring is going to hit again.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
We welcome you a board.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
My name is Mike, Paul Brown to the far side,
Dennis Tziani in between, and right out of the gates,
we welcome in Jerry Kelly, thirteenth time winner on the
PGA Tour Champions with yesterday's win at the Mitsubishi in Duluth, Georgia.
Shot sixty two sixty seven sixty seven, thirteenth win on
the Champions Tour. Jerry, let me start just by saying, congratulations.
Speaker 6 (01:24):
Thank you. I appreciate it. That was kind of fun.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, I would think it's kind of fun.
Speaker 7 (01:29):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
I always wonder about the perseverance and the stick to
itiveness it takes. You've you've battled some health issues that
you've worked your way through, and every time you win,
I imagine do you even enjoy it or celebrate it
more because it gets more difficult as you get older.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
You're fifty eight now.
Speaker 6 (01:50):
Yeah, no, there's no question I still enjoy myself right
after there's we definitely had a good win last night.
But no, it is harder. Though the kids are getting
younger every year. It's a good batch of guys coming in,
(02:11):
you know, it always seems to be. And I mean
next year, I think we've got Zach Johnson and you
know that Streelman and Charlie Hoffman. I mean Tiger next year.
If Steve can talk him into coming to Madison and
he can play some of our majors, that'd be awesome.
Speaker 8 (02:30):
Jerry, I got a question for you.
Speaker 9 (02:32):
I played golf with Dan Cook today and He talked
about you guys playing hockey together. Was your number thirteen?
And hockey? Is that where that all comes from? That's
not an unlucky number then, right that?
Speaker 6 (02:46):
That wasn't my number during hockey.
Speaker 8 (02:49):
Oh it wasn't.
Speaker 6 (02:51):
I fell into that number right after I stopped playing hockey.
It would be today if I choose the numbers.
Speaker 9 (03:03):
He said, you too were pretty competitive? And I said,
were you great players? He said no, I wouldn't say
we were great players, he said, but we were pretty good.
Speaker 6 (03:11):
Yeah, I mean Dan was great. I think, uh, you know,
we had a really good team at Madison East went
to State, lost and are lost in the final game.
I think it's to memorial Unfortunately. I think Robbie Andrina
(03:32):
took us a part of that one.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Jerry.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
I'm listening to the and watching the television coverage, and
they talked about you saying that you were kind of
fighting your swing Saturday and Sunday. When they say that,
what does that mean? Like in your way of thinking,
what is fighting your swing mean?
Speaker 6 (03:54):
Uh? I mean I'm just not making the contact my
starting lines on exactly my trajectory isn't exactly the thing
that I was able to do was always shade it
to the correct side I could take. You know, it
wasn't a two way miss and I could go either
(04:17):
direction as well. It just wasn't a really consistent dot
pattern coming out. And you know, I kind of knew
what was going on, but I don't know if I
didn't have the strength to really stay in it as
much as I should. But I've got a little more
(04:38):
speed than I have in the past, and I think
some of those forces take over a little bit. So
I definitely need to get stronger. But I need to
be healthy to work out, and that's that's kind of
been a tough part.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
You hit a ton of fair ways all weekend long,
shooting sixty two, sixty seven, sixty seven, and then you
are making putts. 'tis what do you see when you
see Jerry playing at his best? What is it about
his game that stands out for you?
Speaker 3 (05:12):
But he hit it on the place. See, fundamentally he's
really good.
Speaker 7 (05:14):
Yeah, and you know you take those guys, you know,
that's all he's ever done.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Same thing with Steve.
Speaker 7 (05:19):
You know when you get a guy that that's what
he's done, that's his commitment. He doesn't really even realize
how big his commitment is. But fundamentally he was good.
But he gave you the hint he was playing golf.
He wasn't hitting the ball. He was playing golf and
when he got there, that's his strength.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
He plays good. He's always done that. You know, I've watched.
Speaker 7 (05:37):
Him and you know, over the time, and and you know,
I'm just impressed with the fact that I know he's
got them. He's maybe had some physical things, but you know,
he corrected a couple of things in his swing that's
totally different today than it was maybe two to three
(05:58):
years ago when it was laid off for lot And
you know, I just think it's great if he could
continue to make some putts. He's going to continue to compete.
Speaker 9 (06:09):
Jerry in terms of that competition and that desire to play.
And you've been out there a long time, how do
you feel about it? Do you still have that consistent
and the same drive in that type of thing.
Speaker 6 (06:21):
Oh yeah, there's no question about it.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I mean.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
I want to get after it every time. I mean
that that was a really fun sunday. I mean, Ernie's,
you know, such a good guy, and you know that
that was a little bit different because I was I
was actually able to kind of chill a little bit
while I was going through it. It just wasn't tooth
and nail, and you know, oh I got to beat
(06:49):
this guy. It was it was really true competition. It
was just the two of us really for most of
the yeah, most of the day, and you know, it
was it was fun trading blows with him, you know.
And he made that great eagle on the front to
(07:10):
get it closer, and then I had a good putt
that lifts out on nine, and then he makes berdie
on thirteen, and all of a sudden we're tied. And
I said, boy, I gotta I gotta get this guy
in the next three holes because I don't want this
coming down to eighteen. Because I knew he could do
exactly what he did. It's just knocking on easily. I
(07:33):
could have gotten there, but with a two shot. If
it was a one shot lead, I would have hit it.
But with a two shot lead, my caddy was smart
enough to hold me back.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
It so in a sense that Sunday, especially on the
second nine, turned out to be match play. Do you
like that concept when in match play we don't do
it as often here as they might do it in Europe.
But do you like match play format because maybe that's
what yesterday turned into.
Speaker 6 (08:03):
Yeah, yeah, I do. I really like it when it's
a lot of people in that position too, and you
can't focus on just one person. You focus on one person,
you lose sense of everything else. If you're playing against
this guy, all of a sudden, two other guys just
come up and blow past you. So you've got to
(08:25):
in these tournaments, you've got to keep the pedal down
all the time or somebody who's going to catch up.
I know Steven Elker ended up third, but I watched
him miss a bunch of putts in front of me.
I didn't realize he'd even you know, I think got
to sixteen or something like that, so he easily could
have been, you know, up eighteen eighteen to twenty after
(08:48):
watching what he was missing. So it happens every single week.
Somebody does it and just happy it was me last week.
Speaker 9 (08:59):
Jerry switch gears just a little bit and talk about
the format for the m FAM Championship that's going to
be coming up here. Do you like that format and
has there ever been a scramble format that you're aware
of at any level?
Speaker 8 (09:12):
In the past.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
Sure, we used to have it out here on the
Champions Tour, and we played it on a Part three
golf course which is really cool at top of the Rock,
Oh yeah, in Branson. So we're just kind of reprising
the role that we had in that tournament, which was
a fantastic place, by the way, and now we've got
(09:36):
it on a really tough golf course. Kid Steve all
the time. There's no way he's gonna gonna let the
straight hitter play by himself on that golf course. But
Pa he would have had to do is stretch it
out a little bit. You'd take care of it. But
I'm playing with Justin Leonard and I love the pairing.
(09:58):
We had a great time at the World Champions Cup
the year before last, and you know, he came up
to me right away and said, hey, we did pretty
good in that that format. Let's team up. And I'm like,
absolutely so it it's really cool.
Speaker 9 (10:17):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (10:18):
You know, it turns it back into a locker room
sport instead of an individual sport. You know, you're you're
you're partnering with a guy that you're you're trying to
get into his mind, which is really kind of cool.
We're always so individual and not paying attention to what
the other guy does that you know, when Steve and
(10:38):
I got to play so many times, I was amazed
at how meticulous and detailed and how much smarter he
was to me about the actual golf game and the
equipment and you know, the processes that that he runs through,
(10:59):
that that I kinda I take some of them for granted,
but it's really cool getting to know the guys that way.
And you get that in the team competitions, but this
one you get to know the guys even more when
you're when you're individual partners for an entire tournament. It's
very cool.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
How differently do you play the golf course in a
best ball on Friday and Sunday versus a true scramble
on Saturday. How much does your game change to facilitate
the format.
Speaker 6 (11:34):
Yeah, it's it's funny. Steve and I always played better
in the alternate shot that we didn't the scramble sometimes,
which is which is which is wild? I think we
thrived on on the difficulty of it and the pressure,
you know, and not wanting to let your partner down
and then scramble. It's just kind of like shush, everybody
(11:55):
just goes at it in that format. Uh. It it
is just I mean, let it, let it fly. My
job is going to get the ball in the share away, uh,
justin I mean we're very similar length now he was
he was longer than me at that World champions Cup,
(12:17):
but I I think I'd caught up a little bit,
gained a few yards, uh since my last injury. So
that's a good thing. So sometimes you learn some things
and uh, when you when you can't overdo something and
you find out where truth speed comes from a little bit,
and it's it's it's been kind of a little revelation,
but it's it's gonna be fun. We match up.
Speaker 9 (12:40):
Well, we're chatting with Jerry Kelly and Jerry, what are
you hearing from the other players on the Tour champions Uh,
in terms of the tournament, the format and the whole
thing the golf course.
Speaker 8 (12:51):
What's the reaction you're hearing.
Speaker 6 (12:54):
Well, I'm hearing the guys say, hey, that's a that's
a tough driving golf course. And it is. I mean,
he created a pretty pretty dark, cool golf course. So
I haven't played it, uh recently, I'm dying to get
out there in a couple of weeks and just see,
(13:15):
you know, at this time of year, if we can
keep the keep the greens firm. I know when they're young,
they're firm, but I'm sure they they're starting to, you know,
mature a little bit. Then get that softness to him,
and some of those slopes are are gonna be gonna
be tough to hit, some of those little spots in
those greens, So you're gonna have to be in the
(13:36):
fairway and you're gonna have to control that ball, and
we know blows out there. So I mean it's I
think it's gonna be a challenge, and it's uh, you know,
playing as a team competition. I think Steve is really smart.
I think it's a really good way to get the
guys really engaged, you know, instead of just wearing themselves out, Uh, individually, I'm.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
Going to go back to one thing and then we'll
let you go. We were talking about the number thirteen.
So Jerry's been kind enough to donate a staff tour
bag to our Heart Knight fundraiser that we do annually,
and I asked him the first year he did that
what the number thirteen was, and he said, every athlete
has a number and minus thirteen. So when did you
gain the number thirteen?
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Jerry?
Speaker 6 (14:24):
Well, I mean that was Chris Carpenter, the picture from
the Saint Louis Cardinals, who having a few beers down
in Christmas basement, you know, and he was complaining he
was sore after playing eighteen holes and then a few
more beers, and he starts stocking, while you guys aren't athletes,
and we're like, well, wait a second, you just saying
you're sore after eighteen in a cart? You kidding? He goes, no, no, no,
(14:47):
it has nothing to do with with that. He goes,
every athlete's got a number. You guys don't have numbers,
so you're not athletes. So yeah, I just put the
number thirteen on my bag and I won the next week,
so it hasn't left. But thirteen thirteen is my number
because you know' ti his nose. I've always been kind
(15:09):
of quick to anger out there. Oh and you know,
I started getting into zen and the yin and yang
of things and all that kind of business, and I'm like,
thirteen is going to be my lucky number, because everybody
thinks it's unlucky. Yeah, and I'm gonna I'm going to
take all the good luck that there is out there
(15:30):
in the university thirteen so that well.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
I'll tell you this, Watching you win brings us joy
and appreciate you spending time with us.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Congratulations and keep it going.
Speaker 6 (15:40):
Hey, thank you guys, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Yeah, thank you, Cherry Cherry Kelly.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
He won the Mitsubishi yesterday, wrapped it up set sixty two,
sixty seven, sixty seven.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
That is his seventh year of winning.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
In his eight years on the Champions Tour, he's won
thirteen times on the Champions Tour.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
And that's a lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (16:00):
When you watch somebody go through what he's been going
through with arthritic issues and other things, and then to
stay through it and win after going through.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
Some of that's really impressive.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I don't think people really realize.
Speaker 9 (16:13):
And you take Steve too and Jerry think to the
amount of years that they've been out there and that
kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Yeah, that's a pretty amazing.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
No other sport that we pay close attention to has
the lifespan of competitiveness that this one does. And to
compete at the highest level in the world, Yeah, that
sport for that length of time takes a lot.
Speaker 8 (16:37):
Dennis, how do you look at that?
Speaker 7 (16:38):
I mean interns, Well, I just looked at the two personalities.
That's all they've ever done. It's played golf. Think about it.
They don't have other distractions all over the place. And
you know, I give Jerry, you know, obviously a lot
of credit. His son used to work for us here,
So I have a pretty good insight. You know, family life,
big deal Steve.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Family life there.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
They've got that priorities that we're talking about, you know, faith, family, education, golf.
They went to school, they got done, but really the
priority was and is well free forever would be this
business golf. And you know they both have another Jerry
stayed with his brother in law, said brother in law,
Jim Douger, Jim Schuman.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Jim Schuman stayed with him.
Speaker 7 (17:21):
Steve stayed here with his deal, and they became they
they became their own best teachers.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
That's what's the whole gig.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
Like he says about Steve, he couldn't believe about this. Well,
you know, those are all things that made him the
player that he was. It took some time to do it,
but you know they were good and Mario the same way.
You know, these guys, that's what they do, and they
give one percent towards that game. They play golf. And
I give him a lot of credit. I mean, he's
(17:50):
not only had some physical problems on his only problem,
you know, with his wife.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
They're you know, not feeling very good.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
But he hung in there, see, and that's the that's
the difference. You know, you could see what he was playing.
You know, he was playing. He was competed. I think
Ernie's a good player. I mean, there's no question about it.
But you know, so is Jerry. Yeah, yeah, so is Jerry.
He's a good player. And finding out that he is,
and I look at his swing. He changed it, he
worked on it, he adapted, and he's a winner. You know,
(18:18):
if he made more putts, he would win a lot more.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
Yeah, and and like he said, kind of off the top,
and then we'll take a break.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
He enjoys winning. I bet you last night he said
they had a good night. He enjoys winning.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
Oh question, that's what it's all.
Speaker 5 (18:31):
That's good for him, all right. Gary Demodo joins us
on the other side. And then a little bit later
on we'll talk a little bit more about format. Out here,
and I got a little lesson question that I'll hit

Mike Keller, Paul Brown, Dennis Tizzy ONIM. We welcome in

Association of America.

Gary.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
We just had Jerry Kelly on who won down of
the Mitsubishi in Duluth, Georgia yesterday, And that storyline that
we've talked about many times with Steve winning so often
on the Champions Tour and Jerry we were just talking
about at the end of the last segment here, it's
got the longest lifespan in the pro sports that we
pay attention to of competitive greatness. You know, when you're
(22:29):
competing on the tour at twenty three, twenty four years
old and now still doing it at fifty seven, fifty
eight years old, it's just really impressive to watch what
either and both Steve and.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
Jerry have done. And Jerry this weekend getting another win.
Speaker 15 (22:44):
Yeah, I listened to Jerry in that segment, A big
fan of his and Steve's always have been. You know
what's amazing about those guys and all the guys who
have longevity on the tours, is how often they have
to reinvent themselves. I mean, you know, Steve, he've had
the big slump years ago and came out of it
better than ever. Jerry, I think he's retooled his swing probably,
(23:06):
you know, three thousand times over the years, and every
time he does it, you know, he gets a little
incrementally better. I mean, those two guys have won thirty
one combined times now in the Champions Tour. They both
battled injuries and come back from injuries to play well.
It is, it really is. It's quite an amazing story
when you see.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
Him playing well.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
What is it about his game that impresses you and
puts him near the top of the leader board.
Speaker 15 (23:34):
Well, this is consistency, especially off the tee. I mean,
he touched on it that he's a straight driver and
he's not the longest guy in the world, but you know,
I've heard him say in recent weeks and tonight that
he's gained a little speed in a little length which
can only help, especially if he hits it, keeps hitting
as straight as he always has. I mean, you look
at the stats and almost every year, whether it was
(23:55):
the PGA Tour years ago or now on the Champions Tour,
he's in the top tour or three or four in
fairways hit and then you know, ex bodes well for
greenshit and regulation, which leads to more birdie looks. And
Dennis pointed out that, you know, maybe if he made
a few more puts along the way, he did want
a bunch more, but hey, he's won a bunch the.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
Way it is.
Speaker 5 (24:16):
We're visiting with Gary Demato joining us on talking golf.
Let's talk about the next So in that vein we're
talking about the corn Ferry Tour and how difficult that
process is. Right now, you're telling me about Thomas long Bella,
the former badger who made it on a Monday qualifier
a week ago or so and then shot seven under
(24:37):
in the tournament and failed to make the cut.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
Yeah it's seven under.
Speaker 5 (24:41):
I mean, the level of competition and that way to
try to make a living making your way up through
the corn Ferry Tour.
Speaker 15 (24:48):
It is not for the meek, No, It certainly isn't.
It's you know, I think the Dennis will probably agree
with this. The best players from any era would be
the best players if you put him in in another era.
But the thing about golf today is it is so deep.
You know, junior golf is so much better. High school
and college golf are better than they were twenty thirty
(25:10):
years ago. You know, kids are better equipped at a
young age to just look at what some of the
young guys have done in you know, on the PGA Tour,
amateurs playing well in winning tournaments. Yeah, there's a bunch
of really good young players coming up now.
Speaker 6 (25:27):
You know.
Speaker 15 (25:27):
We had our cycle with Steve and Jerry and Skip Kennell,
JP Hayes and Mark Wilson. Now we've got another I
think five some have really talented guy. Sam Anderson played
for Wisconsin from Stowton. You mentioned Thomas Lambella, Hunter Ikran
played at Marquette, Kersen haunted at Illinois, and Cam Huss
at Wisconsin. Any one of those five guys or all
(25:48):
of them could get to where you know the other
guys have gotten. But it is harder. You know, you
touched on Thomas Longbella, that cut in that in that
corn Ferry Tour event Fella at nine, Sam Anderson shoots
sixty five, sixty four, sixty four, sixty seven and he
finishes tied for tenth at twenty four under nine. Guys
(26:10):
played better than that a pair of sixty four. Yeah,
he had ten birdies in an eleven hole stretch in
his second round sixty four. So it just shows you
how deep the fields are.
Speaker 8 (26:22):
Dennis, how is this progressing in your mind in terms
of more people and that type of thing.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Well, he hit it right behind it, He hit it
right on the head.
Speaker 9 (26:30):
You know.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
Well, you know, keep in mind now I can back
when I played.
Speaker 7 (26:34):
You know, I didn't have a real instructor. I didn't
have a guy who was fixing my body. I didn't
have a mental approach. These guys are all have all
these They got a team of people playing. We had
all the time to do to get six of us
in a car and get to the next tournament. Yeah,
these boys get on their oir plane and take their
family and go and do these things. The thing that
(26:57):
sets up my opinion is if that person can commit
that this is the only thing I'm going to do forever.
I'm not going to go ahead and get involved in
what I'm going to do when I get out of here,
and all this sort of stuff. That singleness of purpose.
Now you think i'll show you, I'll tell you some
guys chee Chie Rodriguez and Arnold Palmer. Keep in mind,
(27:18):
you know, later years they did other things. But really,
when I sat down at the Jack Nicholas, they were
centered right on what they were doing. And Jerry was
a good example. Steve is a good example. Mario was
another one. You know, that's what they do, that's all
they want to do. And when you have that type
of but there are more people today. I mean the
(27:38):
low score, what is it, sixty eight point something? Yeah,
but holy but there's twenty guys that have sixty and
sixty nine before sixty eight was the low round.
Speaker 8 (27:47):
You know.
Speaker 7 (27:47):
So I'm kind of happy to see what's going on.
But there's big commitments to people other than just hitting
just playing.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
Gary, I'm curious as to now.
Speaker 5 (27:59):
We touched on it just briefly last week, but the
format here for the AMFAM Championship coming up in a
month and a half is different, with the best ball
on Friday and Sunday and in between a true scramble,
which we just talked to Jerry about. I wasn't aware
that they played a scramble. Apparently they did on the
Champions Tour. But how do you think that may impact
(28:22):
the competitive atmosphere, maybe the fun that will be had
out here at this tournament that they've got a totally
different team format.
Speaker 15 (28:31):
Yeah, especially in the scramble format. I think the spectators
are going to see those two man teams light it
up as difficult as they'll set up the course, and
I know it's a tough driving course. Jerry touched on
that and Steve has talks about it. But when you
have two guys and they can play a best you know,
a scramble, two man scrambled, essentially, you're going to see
(28:52):
a ton of birdies and I think fans are you know,
spectators are really going to get into that. The scoreboards
really going to light up. Now when you talk about
the ulternate shot, that's a more difficult format and it's
going to be interesting guys. You know what, they'll have
to pick Quite often they don't play the same golf ball,
so they'll have to between them pick which ball they
(29:13):
want to play, and the guy who doesn't normally play
that ball is going to have to get used to
it in a hurry, how it spins, how it comes
off his club. So I just think it's going to
be you know, it's Did they have to do this? No,
I don't think so. I think they could have gone
to TPC Wisconsin and had a great tournament again. But
I just think this adds to the fun aspect of
what this tournament is going to be.
Speaker 9 (29:34):
Gary, I want to go back to the corn Faery
Tour for one minute here, Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong.
Speaker 8 (29:41):
But are they not using a new system in terms.
Speaker 9 (29:46):
Of penalty for slow play on the corn Ferry Tour
and they're actually going to look at now where you
can be deducted strokes?
Speaker 6 (29:55):
Is that right?
Speaker 15 (29:57):
Well, I'm not so sure about that, but I do
that they have they're enacting some things to try to
speed up play. I know that they're allowing for a
number of tournaments now in the next few weeks on
both tours, on the PGA Tour and the corn Ferry Tour,
they're allowing range finders, you know, laser range finders, right,
and they're hoping that I mean the PGA Tour, I
(30:18):
never liked that look, as Roba Loughlin told me a
couple of weeks ago. You know, they don't they like
the look of a guy looking at his yardage book
and his caddy, you know, going over the yardage book.
They don't like the look of the guy whipping out
a range finder. But I think it'll speed up play
a little bit. But they're doing they're trying to do
things to speed up play. But as rob A. Locklin said,
(30:39):
the only way you're ever going to get it then,
to speed up play is to you know, to do
one stroke penalties without warning, no on the clock stuff.
Just you know, you have a bad time, you get
a penalty. That will never happen, But that would be
one way to speed up.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
We're stealing a conversation I want to have at some
point down the road. So I'm gonna just touch on
it here briefly. 'tis did you watch any of the
Golf League, the indoor version that they played this winner
thirty second with the clock. Now they've gone to a
pitch clock in baseball, Major League Baseball. When people thought
(31:15):
they're never gonna do that. That's radical, You're not. Do
you see a place for that in the future of golf.
Speaker 7 (31:22):
To any way it's going to change is when the
players get with it themselves and it starts to bug them,
and then they're gonna make their own decision on what's
going on. Is it really hurting the play Is it
really hurting players? Well no, but they aren't saying a word.
The players are saying nothing. Ye just those people have
commercials for TV and stuff like that. That's where the
(31:43):
bitch comes in. The players got nowhere to go where
they're gonna, you know, let them do their thing, the
business with range finders. And you're talking about shooting low scores.
You know, years ago you didn't have any of that, right,
you past it off and that's what you shot. But
now you know exactly. And these guys are so good.
I can remember watching Johnny Miller hit and he was
(32:03):
one bouncing from one hundred and fifty yards with his
seven are and one bouncing hitting his bag, you know,
because years ago he used to hit our own balls.
So you know, they're really good. And if they know
exactly how far to hit it, you know. Uh. Dean
Beeman had a log talk with him. Jeez, I said,
you're really hitting it? Well, what are you hitting it
one o three? Is pitching whige one o three? Not
(32:28):
oh maybe one hundred or one o three every time?
So you know thesekys are good, you know, and you
know now they.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Hit it so far?
Speaker 4 (32:36):
Yeah, get it did be pretty good.
Speaker 7 (32:39):
But I don't see unless the players start beefing about
it and they make their own rules. Somebody else is
not going to make their rule to get it because
it's an outside influence telling it to play faster.
Speaker 5 (32:51):
I just the only the only disagreement I have with that, Dennis,
is that the television is a significant driver, and Major
League Baseball, the Commissioner Office and television said the game's
too slow.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
You've got to do something in order to keep the
fan engage. It seems like it's working to it certainly
isn't Baseball.
Speaker 5 (33:10):
And I don't know if golf needs it, but if
television deems that they need it, then television almost always
wins because that's where the money comes a point.
Speaker 7 (33:19):
That's where I was telling you, That's where I was
going with that. It's because of that, and they want
to make sure that you know this. You know, why
do they have a referee behind the plate when you
can put that X right there, and you know it's
either in it or it's out. You don't need the
referee there. Yeah, there's it's a guy on third base
or on basically go out.
Speaker 5 (33:36):
There, automated strike. Dennis, he's always been progressive. People say
he's all fastening.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
Ain't old fast.
Speaker 5 (33:45):
Hey, Gary Demano, this is always a pleasure. Thanks for
spending time with us. We'll look forward to the next one.
Speaker 3 (33:49):

Speaker 4 (37:41):
Just just a guy.
Speaker 3 (37:42):
We gotta lie, We gotta figure out something.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Yeah, make something up.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
Oh, the guy, the guy who lives closest to the shop.
Speaker 4 (37:48):
Yeah, that's right. Proximity.
Speaker 9 (37:51):
I win the prox We can call him the Hall
of Fame of sports talk radio.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
Oh boy, yeah, somebody.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
But a whisper. There's not too many better than him
on the radio that.
Speaker 8 (38:04):
You want to repeat that one more time? Just a
little bit too.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
Many better than him in the radio.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
Oh there we go. Now we're on something.
Speaker 5 (38:12):
Let me I was asking Jerry about format out here.
I'm curious as to your reaction. How would you approach
and is there a different approach to best Ball on
Friday and Sunday when they play the tournament out here,
and then obviously the scramble on Saturday, how would you
approach those?
Speaker 7 (38:28):
Well, you know, they're just going to take that aim. Yeah,
they're gonna have a lot of fun. And that's what
the whole thing is about it. We'll get away from
this every year. It's gonna be fun. They're gonna have
a good time. There's a lot of good things planned
for them here for the entertainment, for eating and stuff here.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
It's gonna be it's going to be really good. But
you know, I know they're going to shoot low here.
Speaker 7 (38:48):
Yeah, oh yeah, even though everybody says it's so hard
you know, these guys are not going to be filling
up their water streams, you know, Sue, you know, and
they can and the putting is uh, you know, it's
so you know, the whole golf course got to understand
his level.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
There's only a foot drop from the north end to
the south end. That's how there is.
Speaker 7 (39:07):
So when they start reading greens, all they're going to
do is reading the green and the surrounds and all
these greens, the surrounds, the mounds on the side, those
all feather into the greens. So they're smart enough to look,
I come down here, there's a mound up there. You
know it's going to break after that mound, you know.
And the other side is that there's a lot of drains.
You can see them from the greens and stuff. Yeah,
(39:29):
last I knew water runs towards the drains. Heard they're smart,
they'll figure it out. And plus all these guys they
can put you know, really and they'll feel good. I
can see a lot of laughter being out there. I
see a lot of people that are really going to
enjoy what's going on. Some great shots are going to happen.
Speaker 8 (39:47):
And I'll tell you what.
Speaker 9 (39:48):
I still I've been a member here a long time,
and I still have people that have a total misconception
about this golf course, the fact that, oh it's it's
still spongy and it wept and that kind of thing,
and you go, you have no idea how different this is.
Speaker 7 (40:08):
Now from the past. Well, it's absolutely incredible. That four
inch rainstorm that we had over we're even closed. Every
course in the city around the area was closed. Our
carts were out at ten o'clock.
Speaker 8 (40:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:21):
Yeah, it's different. It's firm, and it drains well, which
was the opposite of what it was prior.
Speaker 7 (40:27):
And it drains and all the water doesn't run. All
those drains go to the ponds that created are eighteen
twenty feet deep, some of them ponds. Now it's totally different.
I just can't wait till a lot of people get
to see it to say, oh.
Speaker 9 (40:40):
Boy, you know well, and then the inside has been
totally changed as well. I mean, it's it's it's magnificent,
it really is. And people are shocked when they say.
Speaker 7 (40:51):
We're one of thirty two thirty courses in the world.
There's only thirty at these Yeah, tPCS, there's only thirty.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
Yea, And by you know, the standards here are different.
Speaker 7 (41:01):
Now. In fairness, the courses that were competing there aren't
very many new ones. Yeah, they're old courses and they
need work. They recognize the need work. Some people go
ahead in a little bit here and a little bit there.
You know, lipstick on a pig, but it's still a
pig type of thing, you know. But here it was
complete and total renovation. This is a tournament course. Now
(41:23):
we went and fixed it up for our member by
giving six and seventies sure on each hole.
Speaker 13 (41:29):
So you know.
Speaker 5 (41:32):
I'm moving keep yeah, I keep moving on like the
like the Jefferson's close to the east side. Let me
ask you, Dennis about a little time on a lesson
tea here and by the way, our lesson te conversation
brought to you by Lombardi Lemonada. When we talk about
a week ago you were mentioning Rory and handling the
pressure at the Masters and how we finished. One of
(41:55):
the things you talked about was breathing. Now, I want
to equate it because we all get nervous on a
golf course. Sometimes we get nervous because we got a
chance to shoot a you know, a front side even
par or to break forty.
Speaker 4 (42:08):
On a nine or whatever.
Speaker 5 (42:09):
That nerves to you means when people get a little
anxious on the golf course. What is your advice to handling,
Because you talked about breathing, and I'm sure it begins
with some of that.
Speaker 7 (42:21):
Well, when people get tight, they stop breathing. Yeah, right now,
let's watch basketball. You know Jiannis how he does. Yeah,
you watch the girls before they hit, every one of them,
And especially on the putting, you need to breathe on
the xhale or hit on the exhale. When you do that,
all the muscles in your chest forearm they relax. You know,
(42:42):
when they're tight, there's no way that you're going to
make this movement that you should make. So breathing is
a really important thing.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
You know how you do it that? And there's another well.
Speaker 5 (42:52):
Hold on before you go further, hold on on that
one second. I want to make sure we reiterate when
you're talking about putting and stroking on the xil, so
you want them to do that all the time. When
you're gonna make the stroke, it should be while you're exaling.
Speaker 7 (43:06):
No, you have already exhaled, so it's at the bottom
you're exhaled, then you putt right, okay, And that's the
correct that's the correct way to do it, shooting free
throws exhaled. Is should those people that know about that
do that? Arnold Palmer, you know, spend time And his
thing was the exhale was one thing. But he believed
(43:26):
that everything has energy, that that co coconut has energy,
that duck has energy, and he would grab that energy
right bring it inside of him. And he prided himself
and being able to hold that energy inside.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
Okay, So breathing is one thing. But we get nervous
if we're on the first tee at a club and
there are two groups waiting for us, or there's a
balcony of people that are sitting out having a lunch,
and people getting nervous before hitting shots. Now, they're of
all different abilities on the golf course and somebody a
nervous person could be a twenty or a four handicap.
(44:03):
Is there a similar tactic that works for either and
both to handle that?
Speaker 3 (44:07):
And I'll ask you the question, where do you take
your mind and go and hide?
Speaker 13 (44:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (44:12):
Where do you go?
Speaker 6 (44:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (44:13):
That's where you have to go. That's the zone. You know,
A Pogan. That's the zone you take his mind.
Speaker 5 (44:19):
And you know, well Jerry was talking about zen earlier
when I mean, so meditation and zen, so yeah, it's
all part of it, right.
Speaker 8 (44:26):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
You know, where do you go and when you want
to rely? Where do you take your mind? Where do
you want to go to hide? Yeah, you know, and
we've got our own priorities that nobody can fool with.
You can take to any one of those faiths.
Speaker 7 (44:37):
Yeah, family, education and back to golf again, so you
run to hide there so nobody can take those things away.
Speaker 4 (44:44):
By the way, they didn't have zen in the up
when you were growing up to.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
That, Yeah, they did. They still have it. It's a
different kind, you know. It's little Copenhagen, a little dope,
you know.
Speaker 4 (44:56):
Exactly.
Speaker 5 (44:57):
It's just interesting how people handle nerves, you know, and
and and sometimes the same thing come into play for
a plus two handicap or an eighteen handicap. Take yourself
to that peaceful place, whatever that.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
Is is where do you run and hide? Where do
you take your mind? And that's what you have to do.
Speaker 7 (45:14):
That's the zone, you know, I mean that you have
to get to. Now, you know, there's you know you
know this is to play this game, you got to
be really smart yeah, or really dumb.
Speaker 4 (45:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (45:27):
Those are the two things you're looking at me. I
look that real smart.
Speaker 4 (45:34):
Well I'm not feeling that could either.
Speaker 6 (45:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (45:38):

of them before we're all said done. Mike Keller, Paul Brown, Dennis,
Tizzy Honey with you.
Speaker 4 (49:05):
So we just talked.
Speaker 5 (49:05):
We talked at the top of the show today about
Jerry winning down at the Mitsubishi that was at TPC
Sugar Loaf in Duluke, Georgia. Earlier this year he had
the Valero on the regular PGA Tour that was at
TPC San Antonio. The season kind of kicks off and
it's in earnest with one of the big tournaments of
the year at the Waste Management TPC Scottsdale. So you
(49:29):
kind of get that tpc's are tournament hosts. What can
that mean when that comes here? A month and a
half from now.
Speaker 3 (49:37):
Well, here's a deal. Yeah yeah, Well the tournament up
up at.
Speaker 8 (49:44):
Up at Blaine, Minnesota.
Speaker 7 (49:46):
Lane was Yeah, that was a senior event. Yeah, became
very successful.
Speaker 4 (49:51):
It is now a PGA Tour event.
Speaker 3 (49:53):
Right, long time ago, and we were doing this year.
You got to have the putting green ten thousand square feet.
What do you mean, why do we have to have
it so big? You know, well, that's a PGA Tour thing.
Speaker 4 (50:05):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, So.
Speaker 3 (50:06):
I said, what are you trying to tell me?
Speaker 6 (50:08):
You know?
Speaker 3 (50:08):
So, I don't know.
Speaker 7 (50:10):
I you know this, we don't have a site in
the state of Wisconsin for a regular tour event.
Speaker 4 (50:17):
Correct.
Speaker 7 (50:18):
Yet, when you go ahead and you interview our people
who are interested in golf, and you ask them, would
you rather have a tour event every year regular or
would you rather have the way we have it, a
Ryder Cup US Open, a lady's PGA Tour event once
every couple of years, And the answer is that they'd
rather have the major event rather than a regular tour event.
(50:41):
So I don't know that. We'll see what happens here,
you know. I mean, Steve is fifty fifty seven now,
so you know, we got to go for another two year.
He'll be sixty years old when this is done. You know,
you know what's what's going to happen, you know, so
I don't know about a regular's four days.
Speaker 3 (51:01):
That's even more time that takes away from my members.
Speaker 13 (51:04):
You know.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
I don't like that.
Speaker 7 (51:06):
So we'll see what happens. I'm really anxious to see
how this turns out. I'm super impressed on the way
I am FAM is handling this so far, for parking,
for the for everything. Yeah, I mean, Nate was out
here today all day long, walking the course and getting
this thing right.
Speaker 9 (51:23):
Boy, I'll tell you the stands are starting to go up,
and it's going to be very interesting.
Speaker 7 (51:27):
Yeah, oh yeah, you know, and I was really happy
that I when I said, oh, stands behind fifteen behind,
you know, next thing, I knew you wouldn't be able
to see out the window because the stands are sure,
but they're way out there. They're a long ways out.
So we're going to have an excellent.
Speaker 8 (51:41):
Nine I tell you what.
Speaker 9 (51:42):
Sitting in those stands, you're going to be able to
watch a lot of golf without moving you. I think
you'll be able to see people te off.
Speaker 8 (51:48):
On one and ten.
Speaker 9 (51:49):
Yeah, come in on fifteen, t you off on sixteen,
come in on eighteen, and possibly see part of nine.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
Well, absolutely that if.
Speaker 5 (51:58):
You're in it or around on the green at sixteen,
you can watch them potentially drive the green at sixteen
right and then turn around and watch a fantastic par
three behind you on seventeen and the tea shot on eighteen. Yeah,
people are gonna ask where do you go when you're
gonna come out here for the tournament. That'd be one
(52:18):
of my prime spots to be is sitting at the
green at sixteen.
Speaker 3 (52:22):
Oh, go in a golf shop and buy some merchanties
and that too. No, I'm kidding.
Speaker 8 (52:26):
Hey.
Speaker 9 (52:26):
And by the way, that on sixteen did the one
tee to the right side of the green? The first
guy hit it up in the stands. That was Dan
Cook today off the thirty he sprayed.
Speaker 3 (52:40):
Off of three.
Speaker 4 (52:41):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
And they're going to play from all the way back.
Speaker 9 (52:43):
Yeah, they will, but he sprayed it to win right
up through.
Speaker 8 (52:48):
You can go, oh, that's kind of interesting.
Speaker 7 (52:50):
Did you know that if you stand right outside of
you can see sixteen holes here?
Speaker 8 (52:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (52:54):
Yeah, and the only holes you can't see are four
and five.
Speaker 5 (52:57):
I want to ask you this quick before we take
our final break. Mario had a pretty good weekend. What
do you see in his game? I know that over
the weekend he shot he finished time for sixteenth, seventy one,
sixty six, seventy three.
Speaker 4 (53:09):
He's fifty eight on the current standings.
Speaker 3 (53:12):
Yeah, he's fifty but you know he's still making bogeys
on par five. Why is that?
Speaker 7 (53:16):
Every time I see that, you know, drives me crazy.
Here's a guy that can hit every part five and two?
Speaker 3 (53:21):
What is going on? But then I looked he three putted.
He three putted, So chances.
Speaker 7 (53:25):
Are you know he's not but you know he's got
But keep in mind he's got a full time job.
Speaker 3 (53:32):
Yeah, and he's doing that again.
Speaker 7 (53:33):
We're going back to that if this was one hundred
percent his deal and he didn't have his wife that
was very successful at what she's doing. That he better,
he better make those us better play good. There's a
whole different ballgame when you have to do something.
Speaker 9 (53:46):
By the way, that the TV announcers when they saw Mario,
they said that guy should have his age check.
Speaker 8 (53:53):
May he may not be old enough to play out?
Speaker 3 (53:56):
Ye, well, he's in good shape. He does that.
Speaker 7 (53:57):
What is that physical thing that R ninety or some
kind of yeah, PX ninety, t X ninety.
Speaker 3 (54:03):
Yeah, he knows, he's he's really good shape.
Speaker 4 (54:05):
That's good. That's good fun, fun to watch him play
out there too. And he's gonna be Steve's partner.
Speaker 5 (54:11):
Now when we get here a month and a half
from now, we'll take our final break, come back and
wrap things up.
Speaker 4 (54:15):
We're talking golf.
Speaker 11 (54:16):

eight two four, nine, one thousand.
Speaker 4 (57:24):
Back with you talking golf at TPC Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (57:26):
Interesting that would come back from a commercial spot that
talks about membership out year, because that's how I want
to finish Dennis, and that is talking about membership. This
is and I said this a week ago, I'll probably
say it, how many shows we do in twenty I'll
probably say it twenty times from a membership standpoint, from
tennis and swimming and golf and fitness, this is fantastic.
(57:47):
We spent a lot of time focusing on the golf course.
But you have renovated two restaurants, a third you know,
dining area upstairs that it can serve as a wedding hall.
Speaker 4 (57:57):
That is beautiful.
Speaker 5 (57:59):
This is a full service TPC Wisconsin is a full
service membership club.
Speaker 7 (58:04):
Well, I remember what I told you that a good player,
he's totally committed. Yeah, that's what happened here. Totally committed.
You know, there's no doubt about it, aren't. We didn't
short circuit anything.
Speaker 3 (58:13):
It's very good.
Speaker 7 (58:14):
Like I said, we have one thousand and thirty three
requests for membership information that our people are following up on,
you know, fifty calls a day events, and you know,
in our progression, we'll be looking to be in that
number in twenty six. Because keep in mind, I still
signed the front of the check. I still got the
(58:35):
front of the check, but that blank. And there's people
that have applied who would like to be here that
maybe this is not for them. So we kind of
watch that a little bit. I don't mean to be
no discretion, but you know, the point is is that
it's it's a tournament course and it's really not for everybody.
Speaker 5 (58:50):
And from a learning standpoint, from a teaching the game
of golf standpoint, you have the most fantastic teachers of
golf starting with you and Larry, and but what we
do with Travis all the way down.
Speaker 4 (59:02):
The learning potential here for the game is.
Speaker 3 (59:04):
The Academy's almost done. It'll be done here in a
few weeks.
Speaker 7 (59:07):
It's beautiful, it's got all this it's got all this
stuff track men, it's got the learning portions, it's got
the club fitting business. So it's really big time, you know,
and that's our decision that we made. We didn't short circuit.
We went ahead and it's the best our member can
be very proud of where.
Speaker 5 (59:23):
They're absolutely so if you ever't been out, come on
out and see us at TPC Wisconsin. We'll do this
again next week with Talking Golf for Paul Brown and
Dennis Dizziane.
Speaker 4 (59:32):
I'm Mike Keller. Thanks for being with us at TPC Wisconsin.
