Gary Demato and host of his daily statewide sports talk show,
Mike Keller.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Here we go, Here we go.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
You might as well get her.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
We got the intro we've been waiting for for such
a long time.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
You guys give me a bad time. I got it
taken care of.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
One of us was waiting for it. Hey, welcome in.
It is a tournament week. The AMFAM Championship will be
played later this week. In fact, today there was On
Monday there was a pro am, and then there will
be significant pro ams on Wednesday and Thursday all day long,
and then Friday they'll play the tournament, teeing off in
(01:13):
the two man format. We're at TPC Wisconsin. Dennis might
not be hearing me, Dave, just the troubleshoot here I
didn't want to hear He might not want to hear me,
depending on how especially how I ask some of these questions,
he might not want to hear. Let's uh, you can
hear me now, well enough to talk to me. Oh
(01:33):
there he is.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
Now, Dennis, he's gonna shut him back off.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
So give us a cent. We talked about this now
for the better part of a couple of years, and
now you get to tournament week and the all of
the tents and the corporate and the elements. For you,
it's still going to be about the golf and the
experience for those people that are out here. What is
this week like for you? We kick it off here
on a Monday.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
Well, it's not like I thought. It's everything but greater.
You know, we were concerned more I was concerned. We
were concerned about the service that happened inside and also
then a golf course. But then to see all of
this and to see the extension, the extensive that the
m fam has done, which by the way, they've done fabulous.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
You know, we've worked with them.
Speaker 5 (02:25):
You can see why it's good because they paying attention
to what's going on. I mean, this tournament h with
the Senior Tour or a reason why this tournament is
good because am FAM is doing it, there's no question
about it. All we hear are those good things. But
you know, I mean it's I don't know, you want
to say it's perfect. You know, I've been out there now,
(02:46):
I've been around watch what's going on, really anxious to
see what happens when we get the other pro ams here.
When you get eight to ten thousand people here, surely
well they won't have the opportunity to see the inside
more so than the pro am people and the players,
and of course they can.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Well let me follow up on that, because there are
two elements more than two, but two that stand out
to me. The player and the spectator experience out there,
and then the player experience in here along with the
caddies and the volunteers and the general public. That those
attending won't be in the building, but for those who
are taking part in that, that's another element to this
(03:29):
tournament that is incredibly important.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Right.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
Well, you know that the tournament is housed inside this building.
You know you've got Courts four and five which are
medium court, which are golf cars, court five which is
totally the volunteers, and you have the players lounge upstairs, beautiful, right,
and then how was it got this half a million
dollar room down at the end, And that's where the caddies.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Are, that's where the caddies. They've never been treated, So
that's been really pretty good.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
And I went around and you, you know, you and
a lot of the tour players, I already know they
know of what we're doing here. And it's beyond the
point of where I feel that they're just being nice.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
They're really being truthful.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
And when I talk to the caddy, you really get
the right idea what's going on there. It's a but
it was It's a tournament course. It was built for that.
You know, we make that statement. It's not for everybody,
you know, and you'll get some people that want to
play and they can't play very good. Well, it's not
the place to be if that's what's bugging you, you know,
or get better.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
And it's also.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
It's a learning experience, not only for American family in
terms of adjustments they'll make for the next tournament, but
also for you and your staff.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
This is a whole new thing.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
There's got to be a learning curve here, and I
don't think people understand how much effort is being put
in by.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
I remember that we started two years ahead of time
to grow our staff to get ready for this tournament.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
So this is not kid them.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
And then hopefully they turn out they know exactly what's
going on product, price and service.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
They know about that.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
They're being taught from an economs standpoint of what's going on,
where the money is, how this works because ultimately when
you get to me, it boils down to all this
other stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
But wait, you know, where's the trump? You know?
Speaker 5 (05:21):
So they're good. But like I said, we started two
years at a time. We hired some people that are
no longer with us, that were very, you know, big
time people, and we replaced them with some people that
were maybe not as big time where they came from,
but they learned here and they like what's going on.
(05:41):
I told you know, I told you the story how
many times I have bi weekly meeting every rice Wednesday,
and I said, well, you guys are really doing good.
I'm really happy with what's going on. And I think
what I'm going to do is take some time off.
I think I'm going to go up to my Honeycait.
Twelve people stood up and clapped. You know, they couldn't
(06:02):
wait to get him.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Get him out of here, Get him out.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
Is there anything about this so far that has gone
beyond your expectation or even surprised you.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
Now as you view this whole thing now, the golf
course certainly not. I mean it was built for this.
I mean, we spent all this time and effort to
go ahead to get it right. And Steve and I
were out today going around and of all the holes
we play, we played eighteen holes, we found one hole
that we would maybe make an adjustment on, put a
(06:33):
bunker in on the back and left of thirteen, which
would bring that mound in to gear. So I mean,
I mean, after all this time and we're out there,
and you've got two guys that are very critical of
what's going on, and we find one thing.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
So the golf course is really good.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
And then you watch where all these people are going
to see players, They're going to be right on.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Top of them.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
I'm going to be shocked if that isn't probably the
number one thing that comes out of This is the
viewing of what the spectator is going to be able
to see from one location.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Yeah, well you've got place at fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen,
eighteen and nine. I mean you're talking about big places
where you can see more than one hole. I mean
you're standing on sixteen, or you look, there's fifteen green
here sixteen.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
You got a different question for you then, because we've
talked about that for anybody that's familiar with the routing
out here, that they are great viewing opportunities on those
holes that you talked about. What about the hidden places?
What about if somebody was coming out and you said,
if you're not going to go to fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen,
where would you go?
Speaker 3 (07:37):
I'd be down over on three, four and five. Yeah,
you know right behind.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
Four there in that corner, right out right in the
back there. Years ago we developed that place to put
a pop machine. Yeah, right fourth Green. Now, yes, because
you know there's three and I mean there's four, and
there's three, four and five right in a row, and
you can watch them play a hit on six. I
mean it's a place where you can go and stand
(08:02):
on the cart path and watch what's going on.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
It's beautiful, you know.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
The other thing about the viewing is when we talk
about in front of the building here, there's also going
to be interesting because I'm not meeting this as a negative.
At UW Ridge, you'd hear somebody cheer, but that may
have been two fair ways over and you have no.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Idea what's going on.
Speaker 6 (08:24):
There's going to be a delayed reaction here. If something
happens on sixteen and somebody drives it on the green,
there's going to be a lot of people that all
of a sudden they're going to hear it.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
And they're going to wait a minute, what's going on
here on there?
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah? You ridge is a favorite place. I mean, it's
really a good course.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
I mean there's just no doubt about us involved in
that way back when it's really good.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
But the topography is different.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
Yeah, yeah, you know, you got the ridge and it's
over there, But then half of the course you don't see.
If you stand right here in sixteen in the box
on sixteen, you can see sixteen holes. You can't see
three and four, but you can see the other sixteen holes.
So to your point, bring your binocular. There's gonna be
some way till they play behind sixteen and these guys
(09:10):
can drive it on the green because there's gonna be
holding one. I tell you what, well you know about them. Yeah,
you got the black upper right, we got the holes
in one thing, you said, so we got all for.
But I put whole number sixteen in a picture for
a hole in one that's going to be there, but
you know, you can just see it. Or when they
hit it to the right and they chip it in, Yeah,
holy mega's gonna go crazy.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
I did that on Friday. I didn't want to break,
but I did it on Friday.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
A hole in one for it.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Too on sixteen. Okay, so I had to get that in. Well,
you brought it up, so I decided I would go there.
The scoring and the way these players are going to
approach the weather, it looks like it's going to be
pretty good all week long. I don't know how hard
the wind is gonna blow. Maybe there's some rain on Wednesday,
but by the time we get towards the tournament, there's
(09:58):
a chance right now on the extended that Sunday might
have some rain in it. But we were talking off
the year, this golf course rain is not an issue here.
You can play after a heavy rain in very short order.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Correct explain why.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
Well we played. You know that we had that four
inches of rain during the summertime. All courses were closed
in our city. In area, we had carts out at
ten o'clock. But you see the drainage as such that
all the water that's put in which comes from our
place are watering area. All the drains go back into
that or they don't run out. They all drained back
(10:31):
in and it's geared for that. So when I tell
you that it's a tournament course, it's not only from playability,
it's from maintain maintenance too.
Speaker 6 (10:39):
Plus you put a new base on their RACI the fairway,
and then you've got a bunch of sand on top
of that.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
There's a foot and a half of sand throughout the
whole course. And now that has a dual purpose, one
for drainage. But I was concerned about when you build,
when you have greens like this and you can put
the pins in funky places, right, you have to hit
from a thin, hard surface and when you do that,
then the ball leaves from the bottom of the grooves.
(11:07):
That's where the spin is and they're gonna be able
to play darts now. I went out, like I said,
with Mario and Steve today, Mario and Jerry the other day.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
You know, I mean they drive it in the faraway.
The most that they've.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Got is eight or nine are and some of these
screens they're gonna kill it, you know.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
So let me ask you. We're gonna get back to
this the back half of the show, and Gary Demoda
will join us in our next segment. Kid McBride, who
is the tournament ops manager, he is out here. He
will join us just after the bottom of the hour.
Without being critical, I want you to explain what we
saw at the US Open at Aaron Hills for the
women this weekend, because those greens were lightning fast, and
(11:46):
it's what the USGA was almost at that golf course
forced to do to make the greens really difficult to
play and handle as far as speed. Is that what
you saw as well?
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Well?
Speaker 5 (11:58):
I don't want to be critical, but they're amateurs for
a reason. You can't do that. That's not fair to
have that.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Now. The course, I know it very well.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
I know the owner of the past owner is very good,
but they had to make a lot of adjustments to
get to a point.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
My question is.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
Really is it a US open course? So you do
some fairways are wider. We know that all that stuff happened,
so you've got to do something to adjust.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
The Now this is a personal thing.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
Sure you know that. Whenever you have a USA, they're involved.
And I experienced this at other places. There still is
that little bit of the phobia. Whatever it is amateur
versus pro, sure right, yeah. And the worst thing that
an amate can make the pro work at it. He
can't be shooting as low as he can, so let's
(12:49):
do some stupid things in order for him to do that.
Speaker 7 (12:51):
Yeah, you know that.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
Don't have to look too far back to see it.
They did it on the men's side at ben And
Dunes a number of years ago and they messed up that.
Of course for quite a while. They just burnt up
the greens in order to make it to their level
as unplayable.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
Look at Shinnecock they did over there. You got an
old time course that I tried to make into a tour. Well,
it isn't going to work today. So you know, when
you run those greens at fourteen and you can't play,
it's not even a stroke. I mean, it's not right.
My idea is to people want to see the birdies,
let them shoot low. Yeah, I mean, you don't have
(13:27):
to be ridiculous. Now they'll run here around twelve. For
our member, it's going to be ten and a half
to eleven. So otherwise it'll take an extra sure fifteen
twenty minutes to play eighteen of those. You know, so
you're going to find that the course itself here is
only one foot drop from the north side to the
south side. So when you're playing this course, you've got
(13:49):
to be really sensitive to the hills that are on
the green right and the surrounds because that's going.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
To make the ball go left river.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Once they catch on to that, which they have already
you watch and see the scores, he are going to
be really low. I mean, I don't know how they can.
You can because where they're playing it, you know, they're
not playing it all the way back at eighteen. They're
not playing it all the way back at six, or
not playing it all the way so they'll be that
sixty nine seventh rather than seventy two. But that's seventy
(14:18):
two is a big difference because two of those holes
would be into the north southwest wind, I mean difficult.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
I have a question about the tournament format. So those
who aren't familiar best ball on Friday, two man Scramble, Saturday,
two man basketball Las Sunday, would you envision that they
would play your own just do stroke play out here
in this tournament in future years? Or do you think
this is going to be the standing.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
This will be a standing format for a while. Guys
like it.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
I'm sitting in the locker room listening to some of
these guys that are loving it. They can't wait to
play with their buddy. Yeah, they can't wait till time.
That's what you're that. The key word is that people
who are watching the tournament are going to see the
fun they're going to have and the way they're going to.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Who rescues who?
Speaker 5 (15:02):
Right there's I mean if you the first guy up
on eighteen hits it to the right of the green,
the second guy up tries to drive it.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
On the green.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
Yeah, well yeah, you see, once they gets it, I
got people standing there. There's going to be so many
oohs and h's right there. Same thing with fifteen. There's
people right there. I often say on sixteen t you
know where they're going to tee off. If the guy
tees off too close to one of the sides and
he makes the backswing, you're going to be able to
grab it.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
You can grab his club.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Don't don't do it.
Speaker 6 (15:33):
Also, when you're putting on fifteen, if you're on the
top near the grand stand, literally they're going to be people.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Less than five feet from right.
Speaker 8 (15:41):
Look.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
In fact, somebody might lean over and go, hey, it
breaks three inches to the left, and that kind of thing.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
When I went to the ridge and I was I
stayed right behind eighteenth Green, it was awesome. I'm right
there watching it and I'm thinking, wow, too bad.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Well we have.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
That same view now you have four different places, which
is really it's going to be really good.
Speaker 6 (16:01):
One thing that I think I'm looking forward to over
the weekend, and I'm sure you guys are too, is
the reaction of what people are going to say the
players about the course and the facilities and the spectators
and that kind of thing. The secondhand information that I
got today from one of the volunteers who is up
on the range, apparently VJ. Singh said, wow, this is outstanding.
Speaker 5 (16:27):
Well it is, you know, I mean, but that's what
we did. Keep in mind when we did this, Steven,
and when we started out, the environmental thing was the issue,
and around that environmental thing we were able to go
ahead to use the glacial sand and all that sort
of stuff. Now, all of a sudden, you take a
look at this piece of ground one hundred and seventy
acres compared to what it was, or what's across the street. Sure,
(16:49):
same stuff. Would you rather have that or this? You know,
so it's it's really it's really good. He would understand
what it is toke it a I wouldn't be surprised
if down the road that you know, And I know
I talked to the you know, the three.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
M up in Minneapolis that was.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
A Champions Corps tournament.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
First.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
The same guy who designed that, Winsloft, did to work
here and they went from now a senior event.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
To a tour tour event.
Speaker 5 (17:28):
And I don't know, you know, that's going to be
an issue as we go on, because already I can
hear him talking about this and that, and you know,
I think of every place they played a tour event
in this state, and I played on.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
All of them. Sure, yeah, yeah, Well there's nothing, there's nothing.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
We've got time for one more.
Speaker 6 (17:50):
He mentioned Steve WINSLOFFT Dennis and I were doing a
show two years ago on the fourth of July. We
taped it with Steve Winsloff was here and I asked him.
He had worked on others TPC courses, and I said,
I'm not asking you to compare them, but what's different
about this one? He said, Number one, we were landlocked.
We had to redesign it within this what.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
We had in his existence.
Speaker 6 (18:12):
Number Two, he said, when he thought about it, he said,
on almost every golf course in America there's a whole
or two where you just grip it and rip.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
It, not here.
Speaker 6 (18:23):
And number two is it's going to make you think
on every shot.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
Were the two things he said. And at the time
I thought, yeah, right, oh, you know what he was right? Yeah,
I don't think what I don't.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
Believe, even for the tour players that are going to
be playing here, that there is this single time that
they can relax on their t shot. And there are
many golf just about every golf course you can go to,
you're gonna find two or three driveable I mean driving
holes that you don't have to worry. You've got some
room to operate. I don't know that that exists here.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
From where they're going to play from. You better be careful.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
What we did, however, is we constructed six different tees on.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
Each home average so you can move it, so you.
Speaker 5 (19:07):
Can move up, which changes the direction, which now a
normal person can play.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
You know, normal who you describe it.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
I thought I was gonna be good good bye saying
that you've got two normal ones.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Wonder your left I don't know about that, about that
at all. Gary Demato is going to join us on
the other side. He spent some of the weekend out
at the US Women's Open at Aaron Hills. He's our
weekly guest. He'll be with us on the other side
talking golf continues. It's tournament week at TPC Wisconsin.

Your game, your store always at the best price.
Speaker 4 (22:48):
Back with you talking golf at TPC Wisconsin On tournament week,
the MFAM Championship is underway and earnest the whole week.
Everything there's something every day. There was a smaller outing
today and then practice rounds tomorrow. Huge pro ams all
day Wednesday, all day Thursday, tournament, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, a
concert on Friday night. It is just a full wall
(23:10):
to wall week of activity. We bring in now Gary Demato,
former president of the National Golf Writers Association of America,
and we talked about this a week ago, Gary, that
it was going. It was golf was centered here for
the next two weeks. Obviously the memorial going on in Ohio,
but the Women's US Open at Aaron Hills and then
(23:32):
the NFAM Championship. So let me go kind of chronologically.
I think you spent some time out at Aaron Hills,
and certainly we're paying attention with what was going on there.
What was the takeaway from what happened at the Women's
US Open.
Speaker 13 (23:45):
Yeah, hey, guys, I thought it was a great Women's Open.
It was a good leader board. I mean Nelly Corda,
you know, in contention till the very end, world number one,
Maia Starts, who I think is going to be really,
really good, a superstar and the next great player from
Sweden to come along following Anica's footsteps. But I thought
(24:07):
the real winner, you guys, was Aaron Hills. I mean,
you know when Men's US Open. It was hell there
in twenty seventeen and brooks Kepa won at seventeen under
and justin Thomash out of sixty three. A lot of
people thought the course, you know, scoring was too easy,
the course wasn't worthy of a US Open. But I
think it really showed its teeth on Saturday and Sunday
(24:29):
here and the Women's Open Saturday was over the top
difficult and you know the winning score Devin Under. Now,
if the men ever come back, they'll turn that power
five first told into a part four and I just
think it would be another It's worthy of another men's
US Open. I really believe that Gary.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
It is always open for debate and very intelligent golf
minds can see this story differently. But one of the
things that they had to do to make it that
that scoring challenge was to dramatically speed up the greens.
We saw potts going off the greens and into bunkers,
are down to the collection areas. Where do you stand
(25:11):
on that when in Open championships, specifically with the USGA,
where they will manipulate green conditions to do that.
Speaker 13 (25:22):
Yeah, you know, I think it might have gotten a
little bit over the top on Saturday, because you're right,
we saw women putting balls off greens. I mean one
woman hit that short part for fifteenth hole with her
drive two hundred and sixty yards and then made a
double bogie because she put it off the green and
they had trouble after that. You saw a lot of
that stuff happening. And I think but the green speeds
(25:44):
didn't change Sunday and the scoring was a little better,
And I think it had a lot to do Mike
with where they cut the holes, the flagstick, the pin positions.
I think they were extremely tough on Saturday and they
were a little gentler on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (25:59):
Let me ask you about Scotty Scheffler. Back to back wins.
Now at the memorial he continues to get talked about
in higher status as to who he is. Has your
view on him with a back to back memorials? Is
your view on him getting even better? Is it changing?
What's what's that? What's that? What does your eye tell
(26:20):
you about Scotty Seffler?
Speaker 13 (26:22):
Well, I think, you know, I think he's right now,
he's and I don't know how long it'll last, but
right now he's tiger without maybe the intimidation factor. I mean,
he's just such a nice guy. People like playing with them.
They're not afraid of him like they were, you know,
during Tiger's prime. But I mean he's doing the kind
of things that Tiger Woods will do. I mean he's
he's the best closer certainly since Tiger was. I mean,
(26:44):
he gets the lead and he just doesn't relinquish it.
He doesn't beat himself. So I'm starting to put him
up there, you know, just a notch blow Tiger. Now.
You know, longevity and time will be the key. Can
he keep doing this for four or five, six more years?
But right now he is he's a world beater. I
mean he's fantastic.
Speaker 6 (27:03):
Dennis following up on Scheffler, Uh, you have always been.
You look at players and look at their swing and
the way they perform, and that kind of thing. I'll
never forget when you first saw Gordon Speeth, you go
that elbow out. It's not going to work long term,
it's not going to work. What do you see, if
anything in Sheffler That.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
He has the ability to move the ball both ways
it will and height he's going to play the course.
I mean if the back if a back right pin
is in, it's going to be left and left to right,
high ball, short the left, the court.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
He can play golf, that's what he can do. He
can hit the ball too, but he can he plays golf.
He does not.
Speaker 5 (27:44):
He's not a one story type guy. He goes and
he's the footwork. People will go ahead, but that's it's
more correct than anything.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
Do you think he's getting to the point where he
isn't the others are intimidated by him?
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Well, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (27:58):
No. If I don't think it's I think it's hard
to intimidate them. I think it's going to make them
work harder. A Yeah, that's one thing and the other
get back to some fundamental So some of this stuff
that I'm seeing where it starts, you know, fifty yards
to the left and then slice us back to the right.
Offense is right to left. Defense is left to right.
(28:18):
So when I see that left to right player, it's
a defensive player. I have a hard time with that.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
Talking to Gary Demato joining us and out here you've
got the AMFAM Championship and and Gary, I'm just We've
talked about this numerous times, but I'm going to bring
it back up again. The format here, The format and
the golf course I think are going to be the
two stars. And when I talk about format, I think, well,
we're looking. You know, these guys are going to have
fun this week playing a two man game Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
(28:46):
What are your thoughts.
Speaker 13 (28:48):
Yeah, I can't wait to get there. I'll be there
Wednesday through the through Sunday. And You're right, everything's a mystery, right.
The courtse is a mystery except maybe to Dennis and Steve,
but on most guys are going to see it for
the first time. And how the teams stack up, and
how they attack the course, and how they play off
each other and feed off each other. Back the mystry too,
(29:09):
because we don't see team competition hardly ever, unless it's
a Ryder Cup or a President's Cup. So yeah, I'm
really looking forward to seeing how those all those questions
are answered this week.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Gary.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
I'm going to be curious too to see what you think.
You've been at golf courses all around the country and
part of the world and have done it for many,
many years. I'm going to be interested in your reaction
when you see the actual physical setup that's here. I
think there's going to be a lot of people that
are going to be stunned at what they're going to see.
Speaker 13 (29:44):
Yeah, of course I played it, you know, shortly after
the reopening, and it was hard to imagine the spectator
you know, where are the tents and the spectator bleachers
and all that stuff are going to be put up.
But yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing it in its
full glory with spectators on the course. And I know
it's more walkable than University University Ridge, so we might
(30:06):
see more spectators, you know, on the back parts of
the course than we saw you Ridge. So yeah, I'm
really looking forward to getting there Wednesday and covering this thing. Well.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
I have one final question and Dennis might weigh in
on this too. Today many places the longest day of golf,
this is US Open qualifier and walking thirty six holes,
and you were following it pretty close today Gary. As
far as the potential for Wisconsin qualifiers.
Speaker 13 (30:37):
Yeah, and it looks like two guys are going to
get through from Wisconsin O'conomwaks George guys who have played
at UW Green Bay. It looks like he's a lot
to be in at down in Durham, North Carolina and
then the Harrison not a couple two times State Open
champions at He's played in Columbus, Ohio, and it looks
like he's in. So I was trying to think of
(30:59):
the last guy to get into local and final qualifying,
and I think it was Jordan Eibergi in twenty seventeen
at Aaron Hills. He went on to make the cut
and finish type for thirty fifth. Before that, it might
have been maybe maybe a listener can correct me, but
it might have been. You might have to go back
to two thousand and four and David Roach at Shinnecock.
So it doesn't happen often and they have two guys
(31:22):
get through. Is it's huge for Wisconsin golf. It's gonna
be fun following those guys at Oakmont.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
Did you ever do that?
Speaker 4 (31:29):
What this finel set of qualifying for a US Open?
Speaker 3 (31:33):
He forgot? What's going?
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Really?
Speaker 3 (31:36):
I played in three or four of them opens, you know,
doing that? But you know, well, you know he.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
Was going most recent Yeah, yeah, wat.
Speaker 6 (31:45):
Her near it.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
He retired for a reason.
Speaker 13 (31:49):
This century, Dennis.
Speaker 4 (31:53):
Yeah, that's right after they changed the golf ball.
Speaker 5 (31:56):
Well, but the people you mentioned are really good and
you can't believe how many good players there are that
are in the wings, that are seventeen to twenty one
right now, phenomenal. I give you one deal. Then the
sixteenth hole, yeah here all the way We weren't all
the way back, but darn near close to all the
way back. And one of the young fellows that I
(32:17):
was teaching you with, he's got.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
That driving iron or two iron.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Yeah, so well you're gonna lay up, no, no, And.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
He hit it right on the green from back there.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
I mean that's two hundred and seventy yards anyway there.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
There's a lot.
Speaker 5 (32:33):
But the people that he mentioned are really good. And
the people that were David Roche and the other boy
there there's they were good players, good players. When you
get there, it's good. They'll get a real they'll get
a real sea of.
Speaker 4 (32:45):
How good they really are, no doubt, Gary Demato, we
always appreciate chance to visit. And I'm going to look
forward to seeing you out here this week.
Speaker 14 (32:52):
Now.
Speaker 4 (32:52):
You know Dennis drives you might be looking for. Well,
I was going to warn him, Dennis drives that big
maroon GMC pickup truck.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
When yeah, but I don't pick here's a parking spot.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
He'll find one.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
The players goal got the if.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
You see that truck coming, uh, Gary demottol and just
make sure you get out of the way.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
I used, I use the handicap spot. Yeah you do,
I said, what are you doing? I said, I'm a
four handicap.
Speaker 11 (33:18):
Come on.
Speaker 4 (33:21):
Now, we're in the Dad jokes, grandpa jokes. Gary Debattle,
Thank you, will see you out here later this week.
Speaker 13 (33:28):
I'll have my head on the swivel. Thanks guys.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Ida, good idea.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Good to have you body.

It is talking golf at TPC Wisconsin and it is
tournament week. And with tournament week, they're there are people
to come in from the outside that put on tournaments
and set up all of the logistics. And the senior
vice president of operations is Kip McBride. And you've been
here what about a month?
Speaker 7 (37:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (37:11):
You got here easter Okay, April Twinanth So I just
asked you off the air what this week is like,
because today was the first day that it's you know,
there was a smaller pro am and players arriving to play.
Tomorrow's a practice day. Wednesday and Thursday a significant pro
(37:32):
am days four hundred and fifty amateurs playing with the
tournament players, and then Friday is the tournament. How does
this week work and flow for you and your staff?
Speaker 7 (37:41):
Yeah, great question.
Speaker 17 (37:41):
So you know, this morning, obviously that's the first time here,
so players are coming in. You know, they're trying to
find it. You know, the Madison Police has the road
shut down, so other people are trying to get in,
So you know, you get a little bit of that
bump until about eleven am, where everybody kind of figures
their way out where they're going. And then you know,
tomorrow's a big practice round for these guys. There'll be
some other players coming in, but for our staff, you know,
(38:02):
it's just kind of still cleaning up out there and
putting things together. And then again, like you said, Wednesday
and Thursday, it obviously a lot of golf has played here,
and then you get the public on Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
and that's a whole new game.
Speaker 7 (38:14):
So you figured out what you built.
Speaker 17 (38:15):
It's got to be able to move these people around
because I think we're gonna have great crowds.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
Good keep talking about what you build.
Speaker 6 (38:21):
You do this all over and you before we went
on the year, I heard you say it fit my vision.
Tell us what that meant.
Speaker 17 (38:29):
Yeah, So you know it started out when we were
sixteen at University Ridge. We kind of played with different
things and layouts and it works. So you know, and
here we have a whole new canvas, different type of layouts,
so similar structures, but it allows us to expand more
more viewing.
Speaker 7 (38:45):
There's so much viewing out here. It's incredible.
Speaker 17 (38:47):
It's probably one of the most viewable golf courses that
I've ever seen, where you can go to one place
and see multiple holes and great golf. I mean, it's
going to be exciting. I'm excited. It doesn't happen a lot.
I've been in this for a while, you know, it
gets a little but this week I've been telling everybody
this is you know, this is different for sure.
Speaker 4 (39:03):
The challenges and the logistics out here. How much foresight
goes into the look where did the planning begin on
where to put grandstands, where to put suites, how to
take advantage of those viewable holes you're talking about in
particular on fifteen sixteen, seventeen eighteen.
Speaker 17 (39:19):
Yeah, well, I think when we man that made the
announcement to come over here, you know it started then,
so you know we started looking hard on it to
get it laid out and then you could put it
all on paper. But again when I got here on
the twentieth, when you start to lay it out, that's
when it's final.
Speaker 4 (39:31):
Yeah, we were talking off the back here in a second.
We were talking off the year about Kip, about the
flow and how Friday is an adjustment day because Friday
is the first day you're gonna have spectators and you
will have to, like all good businesses do, You're gonna
have to adjust on the fly because there are gonna
be some things that happened that you can't plan for.
Speaker 7 (39:50):
Right, It's right.
Speaker 17 (39:51):
I told the termin director this morning, I said he
if we could, if we could go to next Monday
and then look back at this week and say what
can what do we change and have that we don't have? So, yeah,
we make adjustments every tournament has adjustments because this one
being brand new, you got people moving around differently.
Speaker 7 (40:08):
Where we think that.
Speaker 6 (40:09):
No comprehension of the work that goes into it. Living
here and watching this, it's absolutely been incredible. How does
all of that work? How far in advance do you have?
How big is the crew who worked day after day,
hour after hour and all of that kind of give
us a perspective on that, sure, and how many do
(40:30):
you set up two, three, four places in advance or what?
Speaker 17 (40:33):
Well, so we use subcontractors, venders, So these vendors, you know,
we've used a lot, so very comfortable with them. You know,
I got my start at Mierfield, so it's still part
of the Memorial Tournament. These vendors were doing building that
last week and build it before. So when they get
on site, we start building the understructure, right, the skeleton
of the structure. So anywhere from ten to twelve of
those guys come in, I mean trucks coming in daily.
(40:55):
You know, we've got a lot down the road there
where you know, it was just NonStop trucks and unloading
and getting out, and then you start with the tents
and then you start to finish it. You know, with
the mash and the steps and all the other stuff.
The carpet goes down, there's so much that goes into it,
the restroom vendors, so you know, we try to use
local as much as we can, but there's some vendors
that are national vendors that we use that build our
other events.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
So you do this and you talked about getting your
start at Mirfield, So this canvas, when you're painting it
fresh the first time, you won't know this until next week,
But how much will be different year two when you
come back to the same venue with all of the
things that you can learn and adjust from in year one.
Speaker 17 (41:32):
Yeah, I think it's from from the spectator standpoint, what works?
What can we You know, when we build a structure
on sixteen for example, you know, now if I go
back and change it, I may have opened it up
just a little bit more because you can get a
better view down the fairway.
Speaker 7 (41:46):
So it's stuff like that.
Speaker 17 (41:46):
When you start to see it all come together, you're
going to find these little nuances that you'll write notes
and then the next year, well adjust it.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
It just makes very great respectator. Let me follow up
on that. The collaboration with TV. How important is that
part of it and how much are you involved in
that relationship?
Speaker 5 (42:03):
Then?
Speaker 17 (42:04):
Yeah, So we work a lot with Golf Channel, but
everything we do is taken into you know, obviously spectators,
members and then you know, what's this going to look
like on TV? So you know, I think this tournament
more than any other Urnam've ever done, we have more
what we call logo mesh. So you see those and
FAM logos champions touring the Swab Cup logos everywhere, and
they're not little, you know, they're big and they stand out.
(42:25):
So when you look at a camera. When we started
back in sixteen, you know, I wanted to go with
white mesh and I think when you look it looks
great here, but it really pops on a TV camera. Yeah,
and for the viewer at home. So you know, I
always look at stuff like that.
Speaker 7 (42:38):
For sure.
Speaker 6 (42:38):
People talking about the one question that seems to come
up as in as far as the entire course is concerned,
how about walking with the structure of this golf course and.
Speaker 3 (42:47):
The way it is.
Speaker 7 (42:48):
I mean, it's it's incredible.
Speaker 17 (42:50):
So you know, one of our jobs is too that
on Saturday we go out and put the gallery rope up,
you know, and usually that I'm getting older. So but
I felt really good at the end of Saturday because
this is so easy to.
Speaker 7 (43:01):
Walk, you know.
Speaker 17 (43:02):
I mean you can go and again, you can jump
different holes and get to different places with ease the bridges, you.
Speaker 7 (43:08):
Know, and the scenery is incredible.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
I think.
Speaker 17 (43:10):
You know, we've talked about our favorite spot. If you
sit down at seventeen, which is a lot of spectator area,
and you look back at this clubhouse and there's a
big tree down there on not it's just it's very scenic.
And that's what kind of as I was walking around Saturday,
the whole whole place, it just really neat place.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
And Dennis, you have to be working in collaboration. It's
your place, right, I mean, so when these guys leave
a week from now, it's left to you and members.
So how much collaboration did you have?
Speaker 5 (43:38):
And you know, I really thought when he was talking
about seventeen, he was talking about that place up on
top of the hill.
Speaker 3 (43:46):
Yeah, when we were building this to guys, is that
is that the club? Hose? No, No, it's not the club.
Speaker 5 (43:54):
What I did is kind of sit back, Yeah, I cannot,
you know, the mound of effort that was put in
the tour and American family. There's just no way you
can measure it. And I was I see him every day.
I saw him working every day. I had to dodge
all the machinery and everything else that was going on.
But now to see it here and go stand in
(44:16):
one of those things one time I was out there
with Mario and Steve today and with Jerry and Steve,
and I turn around and look back now at the
clubhouse and stuff.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
Oh that's what I did. Wow, that's what I did.
Speaker 5 (44:28):
I said here, I'm hoping that every time these guys
come in or when their wife comes in and she says, wow,
I win.
Speaker 3 (44:36):
You know, I got it. I got it right.
Speaker 5 (44:37):
But I turn around, holy man, look at this pretty
cool Kip.
Speaker 4 (44:42):
It's a blast of busy with you. I appreciate you
taking time. I know what this week must be for you.
We appreciate you spending some time with us and giving
us some insights into what the back story is of
what everybody will see in person and on TV.
Speaker 7 (44:54):
Yeah, and it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 17 (44:55):
Like I said, I started the memorial so great hosted events,
so you know, I think Steve hosting this event. He's
a great ambassador to the game, so that makes it
even more enjoyable for us.
Speaker 4 (45:04):
Fantastic, really good stuff. Kip McBride. When you see it
out here, he's on the kind of built it shig
all by hand. He had some help, some others were
doing it. Will take a break, come back with more
thoughts in a moment. This is talking golf at TPG Wisconsin.
Your golf game need to pick me up. It's one
stop shopping only in the battle bombs. Joel and his
crew can equip you, dress you, teach you. And here's

Speaker 2 (48:26):
That I wasn't sure.
Speaker 4 (48:29):
Honestly, it wasn't wasn't sure. We welcome you back in.
It is talking golf at TPC Wisconsin, and it is
tournament week with the MFAM Championship. There was an event
here today, smaller pro am full practice rounds tomorrow and
then big time full field pro ams. Four hundred and
fifty amateurs will play on Wednesday and Thursday with pros
(48:51):
in t time events on both days as an extraordinary
number of players taking part in that, and then the
tournament on Friday. So, Dennis, I was going to ask
this question, and I know you'll have an answer to it,
but I'm curious, how do teams you know, Steve and
Jerry or Steven Mario have been out here, so they
certainly have an idea, But how do others that are
(49:14):
pairing up for the first time. Do they need to
play a practice round together on Tuesday to strategize on
who might do what and win either in best ball
or the scramble formats that will be played.
Speaker 5 (49:25):
Well, they do play together, but they're also going to
be playing in those pro answers for of them. Yeah,
so they're going to get their go around of what
it should be like and it won't take them long
to figure out when they get here where they have
to go, and you're going to see it around. Went
with Steven Mario today and you know.
Speaker 3 (49:43):
They've already got it figured out.
Speaker 5 (49:45):
Who's going to hit where and so are we're going
to hit this ball over here at sixteen? But then
that shows up for the right to left player. That's
Steve right the left player, you know, so you know
they've got it. You know, the other part of this
thing is here the money's involved. You know, there's six hundred.
It's three hundred per per player, different than three hundred
(50:05):
when you win by yourself, so it's per player. So
they're going to you know, it's for the money too.
You know, they're not stupid. You know, these guys are
going to play and they're going to play good. But
I think the scores are going to be really low.
I watch how were they you know, they drive it
in a fair way perfect and man, they get seven
eight nine irons.
Speaker 3 (50:24):
To the green and they just tear the flag down,
you know.
Speaker 5 (50:27):
Plus the greens are you know, their tip top, you know,
I mean they roll. It's going to roll it around
maybe eleven and a half. So you know, I can
already see the caddies. They're already marking where uphill and
downhill is. And it's easy here because the golf course,
the property is only a foot drop from the north
(50:48):
to the south, so the total topography makes nothing. It's
the green. Once you understand, you can see the mounds
on the green and then you can see how the
surrounds feather into the green.
Speaker 7 (51:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (51:00):
Oh, they're all smart. They figured it out already. So
you know, I'm kind of anxious to see some of
these scores.
Speaker 6 (51:07):
You mentioned Steve and Mario Tizziani playing together. Obviously we
can't go through the entire list, but there's some interesting
teams here.
Speaker 5 (51:15):
Longer and Alker terrible. I mean, just think about that.
This longer Elker hits the ball, this other guy doesn't agree.
So there are going to be two guys putting for Bertie's. Oh,
by the way, they can they.
Speaker 3 (51:28):
Both can put Ernie tim Herron.
Speaker 5 (51:31):
I don't know about Tim Herron, but Ernie's really found
himself in the last deal. And you have to be
he doesn't put as good as he should, but he's
still putting pretty.
Speaker 2 (51:44):
You got Kelly and Leonard pretty good.
Speaker 4 (51:47):
Let's bring this up, Jerry. Kelly's the only guy who's
won this thing twice. I know that the other course,
but he's won it twice and and he wants to
win here as bad as anybody when he's playing on
his you know, in his hometown. Right, he's a competitor.
He's a hockey player.
Speaker 5 (52:02):
Oh yeah, he's a competitor and he wants to beat
up an American family.
Speaker 3 (52:08):
I know what he's doing.
Speaker 5 (52:10):
But he's you know, he's good. I went around with him.
He drives it in every fairway, so there you go. Yeah,
now he's going to be two seventy to two eighty
in every fairway.
Speaker 4 (52:21):
Well, you know, gives you a chance.
Speaker 6 (52:23):
Well, I mean he's going to be. He's really good though.
I mean, but how about Mark Wilson and Ratief Goosen.
That might be an interesting.
Speaker 5 (52:31):
Very good Mark Wilson's very much an underrated player. Long
time ago, we tried to recruit him out of when
he was in Milwaukee, and we took a player instead
of him. We took a player from Middleton and this
guy went on to be uh where did he go
out in South North Dakota, North Carolina someplace over there,
and that coach then became the coach at Purdue.
Speaker 2 (52:53):
No.
Speaker 3 (52:53):
Yeah, so, but he played good, he won, He's won
tournaments out here. It's the stupid coach at recruit him.
Speaker 2 (53:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (53:02):
And for the people that are going to watch it
on television or come out here, you talk about a field.
You got five members of the World Golf Hall of
Fame in this tournament. You've got five former number one
players in the world. You've got sixteen winners of the Sters,
the US Open, the Open Championship, and the PGA Championship.
(53:23):
You've got nine of the top ten players on the
current Charles Schwab Cup money list. I tell you what,
pretty Field is pretty good. The only notable person missing
is Colin Montgomery.
Speaker 5 (53:37):
That's okay though, that's okay, though I don't he's attitude.
But I going to tell you about this, these guys
here and the closeness of these seas.
Speaker 3 (53:46):
So is he and I played? I didn't play.
Speaker 5 (53:49):
I went around with her, latched their fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen,
played do so she made two birdies, missed him, but
she got on number eighteen. And it's intimidating standing on
that green. So see, I'm watching nurse's standing there. She
turned around, grap what she says.
Speaker 3 (54:02):
You know, I don't. I think I'd be really nervous
if this was the people were in the stands.
Speaker 4 (54:07):
Right, should be fantastic. Can't wait, cannot wait. It's gonna
be a heck of a fun week. We hope that
many of you are coming out. We'll give our final
thoughts when we come back. This is Talking Golf Tournament

we went through here. I don't know, it's hard to
even pick out somebody that won longer and that stands out,
but even you know, there's some guys there that are
really pretty good. What Sunday is going to be the
day that you want to be here?
Speaker 4 (58:05):
But is that's the tournament itself? How about you, as
the owner here and this place that you have been
with since it's its inception. Is that Friday when all

happy right now, you know, Friday, Sunday and signer. We'll

big shots, you know, I mean all that sort of
stuff kind of like it. And the feedback that I'm
