Speaker 1 (00:01):
Talking Golf at TPC Wisconsin is on the air. Talking
Golf is brought to you by American Family Insurance, Oak
Park Place, Wild Rock Golf Club, Mercedes Benz of Medicine,
TPC Wisconsin University, Ridge Golf Course, Ridge Top Exteriors, Southern
Italy Imports and Novada Bob's. Now here's your foursome for
(00:26):
Talking Golf. Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer Dennis Tizziani, Wisconsin
Broadcaster hall of Famer Paul Brown, Wisconsin premier golf reporter
Gary Demato and host of his daily statewide sports talk show,
Mike Keller.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, we got it. I can hear it.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Dave, you got to help out our guy here? Can
hear can't hear the program so far?
Speaker 4 (00:48):
Every week? He does? You know out?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Welcome.
Speaker 5 (00:53):
We think we're trying to get it so we can't
talk or here.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Well that's the second part. If we could turn the
mic off sometimes that might be a good idea. Now,
now you're good, can.
Speaker 5 (01:03):
You hear it?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Welcome?
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Welcome into live radio as we work on Talking Golf
at TPC Wisconsin in Madison. I Mike Keller, Paul Brown,
Dennis Dizziani is right next to me a little bit
later on, we'll visit with Gary Tomato and then Nate Pokrass,
the tournament director for what is now year one of
the MVAM Championship at TPC Wisconsin, and Dennis we were
(01:25):
talking off the air.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
It's just an amazing success. Uh, it was.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I think the weekend was fantastic. That golf was brilliant,
and I think that the people that were here in
attendance and the members all enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Yeah don't. You couldn't write a better script. But you know,
m fam, that group they have, they did a great job.
You know, they were with us and they worked very
much in contact with the tour. The tour was very
of course they would they've done this number of tabusa,
but that group together that was at our staff integrated
with him well. But it was you know, we all
(02:03):
have kept our book to see how many little things
that we want to do different now, not a lot
of things in there, No, not many. They did pretty good.
And then the member room. That was a big item
for me that they had this whole thing here and
we watched it Steve on TV and I told you
that you know, they they would sit there and it's quiet,
(02:26):
and then one of them would make a putt. They
thought I was in the I thought I was in
the stadium. You know, they were yelling. So they had
a good time. But overall, all in all, and the
course played good. You know, it didn't surprise me, however,
that those guys won, because this is more like a
links course than it is a regular one, so they
knew exactly what was going on. Dennis.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
As you watched television and saw the pictures of the
golf course after all these years of being here, what
did you see?
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Well, I saw the vision. I saw the vision. It
was right in front of me that we you know,
we had to go ahead and do something with what's
going on here under his original deal. The soil, the wetness,
all those things that you hear about what you know,
and to see how all those things, you know, we
had rain and they just went out and played, you know,
(03:19):
like the rain was nothing. And then get to see
the playability of the holes. Now there's some things that
we did see however, that maybe we'll take a look
at going forward, some of the holes. But for the
most part, hole by hole by hole, it played like
we thought it should play. You know, there's there's no
hole that stands out, but they all do. Yeah, you know,
(03:44):
and you have to know, you got to be able
to play golf from where they played anyway. You got
to be able to.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Play one thing that I would think you would not
disagree with. The old reputation of Cherokee Country Club is
gone for every.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Really, we still have a little of some of these guys,
and there are people that are not competing necessarily, but
they have loyalties to their club. And you know, Cherokee
this and Cherokee, well, it's not like that anymore. It's
totally different. It's more link style. This is pretty much
the way it was when I got here fifty some
years ago. You know, we planted those trees and of
(04:24):
course then they got diseased. But yeah, like you say,
every hole and all those teas you know now, number one,
they didn't play from all the way back, you know,
they couldn't. It's too far from all the way back.
But to be able to see that and then today
out there to see our people playing the threes and
(04:44):
the fours, you know, sometimes they go to the we're
right back on it again. So you know, we always
say it, it's not for everybody, but then again, you know,
if you want to play golf, this is where you
want to be.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Well, we're going to get to some of that.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
I mean, we some of that in the comments that
you're gonna hear in a little bit. Let's talk about
Darren Clark and Thomas Bjorn. They win the championship. They
were really good, and when they got it going yesterday,
Steve and Mario just couldn't find a way to make
some putts. And then these two guys just kind of
walked away a little bit.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Well, they were really good, but you know, tongue in cheek,
kind of like if Steve was healthy, it's been a
whole different ball game.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, And we could see that. And then Steve won't
join us tonight. He's with the girls that the women
stayed open in lacrosse. But you could see.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Can't hold on, see what he's left down and he's
going to be at he's gonna get what do you
call MRI type thing on Thursday, and you know, but
he can't. You can tell he's losing it all to
the right. He hangs on and he gets frustrated. I
can see that when he's out there, and it carries
over to all the stuff. You know, Mario played really good,
(05:55):
kept them in the game. Yeah, for a lot of times.
But if Steve, I'll tell you what, if they're both
healthy come next year, watch out.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Can you see Steve shutting it down for the rest
of this year?
Speaker 4 (06:08):
No, I don't think so. I think what's you know? Yeah,
he's a player number one and that's what he wants
to do, and this is a frustrating thing that he
cannot perform like he did before. And we hit BALLSI
and in my commentation was, don't be changing. Get whatever
you have fixed. Don't try to adapt a different swing,
(06:30):
you know, because you're not going to find it. Next thing,
you know, you've got to rebuild again. So he's better
off getting fixed and then move along and get the
field that he's looking for.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Saturday was so much fun.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
You know, they don't play a scramble format out here
on any of the tours, but that was so much fun.
I don't know if they'll do it again in that
exact format, but that was so much fun. And you
must have been tickled to see Mario playing so well,
and those two, your son and your son in law,
you know, putting up the best score of the day,
and you know that must have been pretty cool, even
(07:04):
just for you and then you don't beam too much.
But that was pretty good.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
Huh h.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
It was really good. And I think that you know
that format the scramble is the easiest, right, and they
should probably pay that play that first.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Sure, the.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Other game where you each play your own ball, Yeah,
that would be good for a second day and a
third day.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Oh, I know where you're going.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Alternate shot?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Yeah, Steve talked about it in the post.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Yeah, he did yesterday in a interview he talked about
the idea of going alternate shot.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
How fun would that have been yesterday? Alternate shot? And
it ramps up some of the pressure, right.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Oh at the end, I mean you're going to have
to really play, you know, so they'll work it out.
And it worked good. Everything about it was good. I
don't know what they would change. And you saw what
happened here from moving players around and oh, we got
to build a cart path around the pool so the
players can go that way and not go through the group.
So that's not a big item, but little things like
(08:07):
that as we go forward, you know, the fellow that
I dealt with. It's not CJ. But I forget is
I keep forgetting it with the PGA. He goes to
twenty five of these events, and he says, this is
by far, by far, And I'm not just telling you
this because you know, I bought them of some snickers.
(08:29):
You know, I said, you know, by far, this is
the best tournament of the bunch.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
On the Champions Tour.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
Well, they talked about a potential record even in crowd
on Friday. Yeah, they were checking it. They said they
weren't official, but they thought it might have been.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
He said, it's the most people on Friday they've ever had.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Well, we're gonna have Nate on after six thirty.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
I think they've always been a little hesitant to give
us numbers. Yeah, they give you numbers, but I don't
think they put them out publicly. But I can tell
you that that the views of it and the people
that we were running into it was it was an
incredible success. Now I want to hear from some of
the people that were involved in it.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
We're going to play you a little.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Sound Tim Herron and Ernie Els first, because their their
conversation about this and Dennis, I think you're gonna love
what do you hear from Lumpy Tim Herron, let's play
that sound from Tim Herron and Ernie El's.
Speaker 7 (09:26):
What I would say is, I have three sons that
are trying to play golf, college golf, and one's turned pro.
I'm gonna have them come down here for a week
just to play this golf course and kind of learn
about their game, because this is one hard golf course.
Speaker 8 (09:42):
Yeah, if you if you grow up, yeah, and you
play this top of course, you'll hear it luck Steve Stricker.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
You'll be forced to hit it like.
Speaker 8 (09:50):
Steve Strick exactly because you got if you miss, you
guys have played it. I mean if you miss, yeah,
you can really batch it up at school. But maybe
a couple of star will play an individual Eventicke and
but I think the team format's really catching on to
the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
But one other thing that Tim Herron said after the
press conference was over, a couple of people were talking
to him and he said he followed up on what
he also had said earlier, and he said if they
came down there and experienced that golf course for a
week or two, they would see the quality of how
good it is that you would have to play. He said,
(10:31):
I can see where the instruction and the instruction facilities
at that place are basically you would want them exposed
and have experienced all of that.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
There, Yeah, I can certainly see that.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
And just from a playability standpoint, Dennis, did anything surprise
you about their ability at this level to get around
this golf course and shoot the numbers there?
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Now, we thought thirty under was a score and are
near it went past it. But they're good and well,
I said, when I went around with Jerry and Steve
and Steven Mario, I mean they were in a fair
way all the time. They're not hitting it all over
the good ones. And so it boiled down to just
what we thought it would be. It's making putts.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
What do you think they'd do in the individual side?
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Ernie talked about that maybe in a few years will
play you know the individual format.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Well, think it'd be different, you know, I still it
certainly wouldn't be that number obviously.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
But but you're still going to be that twelve to
fifteen under, and they could make it harder, just move
it back. They didn't play from all the way back,
so you can make it a little bit longer, but
and then you can pick the pins more aggressive. So
you know, it's really it's a tournament course. That's what
it was built as a tournament course. But we built
the ts so that our member and people average average
(11:52):
type could enjoy.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
It sure by moving up a tea box or two.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Also, the broadcasters Peter Jacobson and John Cook, they were
talking about this. Now you're going to hear this is
during the tournament coverage. Let's hear from Peter Jacobson and
John Cook.
Speaker 9 (12:07):
The one thing I love about the TPC Wisconsin, John,
is the fact that it brings pitching back into the game.
We see a lot of golf courses built with greens
that are elevated and a lot of drop offs, so
they're hitting flop shots. I like to see these the
players hit pitch and runs to the whole locations.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Yeah, not just hack out of rough. Let's see some
imagination different and choose different clubs.
Speaker 10 (12:33):
Not just grab your sixty degree and go in there
and hack it out of rough.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
So your reaction to well, you've said many of the
same things.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
It's it, you know. I watched him on sixteen. The
pitches from a downhill to a sharp pin and it
looked like he bladed it. Next thing you know, it
stops right next to the hole. You know, I mean
they I think what you see here is the natural
ability of those players are. That's a little bit of
they have to produce shots here and it was made
(13:03):
for that. You know, misson and it run. There's a runoff,
but the runoff is not into a rough. Yeah, there's
some elevations, there's some things you have to know there,
but it really you got to drive the ball good.
You have to hit the ball on the green. If
you miss the green, you better know how to chip.
And putting, of course, is a whole nother story.
Speaker 5 (13:26):
I got to ask you this question because there's a
number of people this past weekend that asked me. You know,
I've been around a few years, and I know, I
think I know you pretty well. They're wondering. You sometimes
give people an impression you're thinking one way and maybe
in reality you're thinking a different way. You came here
(13:48):
with seventy bucks or so in your pocket, about sixty
sixty three, fifty well how many fifty years ago.
Speaker 4 (13:55):
Or fifty three? Now?
Speaker 5 (13:57):
What seriously, after this weekend. What are you thinking, I mean,
in terms of all the stuff you've gone through, all
the things you've done, the legacy you've established in that
kind of what do you think.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Well, you know, after a while you get it's what
you leave behind that counts. And if you take a
look at what we're doing for left behind, when you
take this business of the golf swing and all the
things to it that all the people working here now
are picking up on, it's this facility, you know. Now
(14:32):
you so again you can't take it with you. And
I've been fortunate obviously in a lot of things, but
to be able to accomplish this, and I already know
that the jibber jabbering about another tournament here and you
know at I think we talked about this at up
(14:54):
in Minneapolis.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
That was a of course in Blaine, yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
Plain, yeah, but that was a senior tournament.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah, and now it's now.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
It's a three roun you know, So I don't know
what uh am fam has in mind. You know, Bill
west eight is a friend, you know, I teach him
and his daughter and uh he's a CEO now, so
we stood on the deal here and he just was
it was ecstatic. I got it and I had to
(15:28):
lean over and I said, you know, Bill, you and
I we can do whatever we want to do. What
are you most proud of.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
This part of your life?
Speaker 4 (15:39):
About what's going a well, you know, you have a
membership and you're always but I have a membership here.
I do different than where I grew up and stuff.
Somebody's always bitching about something, you know. I don't hear
that here. Yeah. And you know the other thing is,
and you know, we are going along the road of
building our membersh up around the women's golf, you know,
(16:01):
and to have these girls come in here, you know.
And my wife is with me, right Bob, You're sitting
at the table and these girls come over and they
give you a hug, and they do this and everything,
and she's watching them. She's not used to seeing, honey.
I mean, that's the way it is. So to see
them and the people being happy in golf. How can
you beat that? I just left here with Jimmy couple
(16:22):
and the kids walking out and they're high five and
and they're doing this. I mean, how good is that?
If in fact that golf and that's what you're into
golf and making people be happy in golf. And I've
told you a hundred times people that we teach and
you don't ever charge for nothing. I said, look at it.
That kid is happy. Yeah, and they you know, they
(16:43):
write a check to the golf Onunday.
Speaker 5 (16:45):
Find your passion and giving away. That's why you're doing
That's how you do it. I mean there's a lot
to that. You know, you want to get ahead, you
help other people get ahead.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
So all those things. Now that I'm fifty years old,
you know.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
Uh, thirty years ago, years ago, and.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
I have to tell you this one story. I have
to tell you this. Do we have time? Sure, it's
my show. I was talking.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
You're in charge.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
But anyway, the the horn blew right, and uh, all
the people came in. Yeah, and this guy, oh I
did that. What do you mean you did that? I said, Well,
where I grew up, my dad would say, it's a
nice stacy. Blow to horn, bload of damn horn? I said,
for what blow to horn? It would all come in
(17:33):
and then he would keep tracked on the register how
much money was taking him right, And when he got
the two hundred dollars, he would say, okay, blow to horn,
get him out of here. Get him out of here,
and they all laughed, like come in and of course
they're at the bar. They're buying merchandise, are going, they says.
So it was a plan.
Speaker 5 (17:49):
You know, you're so full of it, you know, get
him back there, get him out again.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Perfect.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
That was cool.
Speaker 3 (17:56):

It is talking golf at TPC Wisconsin on a Monday,
Mike Keller, Paul Brown, Dennis Dizziani. We welcome in Gary Demato,
who spent the weekend here with us in Madison at
the AMFAM Championship. And Gary I won't try to set
you in a certain direction. I just want to get
your reaction to what this tournament was here this weekend.
Speaker 16 (21:47):
Well, guys, thanks for having me on again. I thought
it was a great week. I mean, it was almost
the perfect week as I wrote my story, except for
you know, the wrong guys one you could say everyone
for Strick and Mario, but if they couldn't win. I
think the tournament got great champions and you know, and
(22:08):
Darren Clark and Thomas Bjorn. The weather was great except
for you know, three hours on Sunday, and the courts
played great. Everything was really good about it. I was,
I was pleasantly surprised. I was looking for things, you know,
maybe not to like, and I couldn't find a single thing.
And the players love playing there too, so I think
it was a win win for everybody involved there.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
Okay, so we'll get to the course here in a minute.
But a lot of people talked about this format going in.
It was obviously something different, playing a two man team
game all weekend long, including a scramble format on Saturday,
that just isn't done on any of the tours. What
was your impression of the format and how it worked out.
Speaker 16 (22:50):
Yeah. I like the format. I know, you know, there's
already talk about maybe tweaking that scrambled format and making
it a modified alternate shot. But I thought the scramble
worked great. There were some obviously some fantastic scores. One
thing I noticed really funny about it is guys aren't
used to playing scrambles. Because I saw Mario a couple
of times he'd have a four foot or a free
(23:11):
footer and he'd pick up his coin and almost putt,
and then he'd say, oh, wait a second, if I
missed this, he still got a putt, and then he'd
have to put his coin back down. So you know,
they weren't used to playing this. For him, they played
in pro ams and stuff, but not in tournament. Certainly,
it's never been done on the PGA Tour. So all
in all, I thought it was really good.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
So we don't know until we know as far as scoring.
So this golf course, you've been on and around it
a little bit, how did you think it played up
at this level with this tournament and these players.
Speaker 16 (23:48):
You know, it's funny. We were predicting scores before it started,
and I predicted thirty under to be the winning score,
and it was what thirty two? Yeah, thirty thirty two,
So I was off by a couple. You know, you
expect those scores, certainly when if guys keep the ball
in play, which you know, which the top teams for
the most part did, They're going to have lots of
(24:10):
looks at Bertie, right, and you know they're going to convert.
And in the scramble form it obviously you're going to
have two Bertie puts on virtually every hole. So you
know you expect some of those scores. And that was
kind of right in line of what I was thinking
was going to happen.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
How did you think, Gary, how did you think Mario did?
And what did that weekend in your mind, uh do
for him in terms of how you look at it
and that type of thing.
Speaker 16 (24:40):
Well, you know, Mario played with on Sunday, It played
with three Ryder Clippers, right, I mean those guys, those
Europeans have a ton of experience in international competition, and
obviously Steve does too, so you know he more than
held his own on Saturday. In the back nine, he
really carried Strict. I mean Strict had a great front nine.
I made all lot of Birdie's, but it was Mario
(25:01):
in the back nine hitting, you know, for the most part,
the great shots, and he made a bunch of putts,
and I think that has to do wonders for his confidence.
You know, Mario didn't play as much golf for a
long long time, and he's just establishing himself on the
Champions Tour, and I think, you know, he's probably seeing, hey,
I can play with every one of these guys, So
(25:23):
I think it had to have helped them.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Yeah, and I think get your thoughts on Steve, although
he didn't visit with media after the final round other
than his network interview just outside the player's room on
obviously his physical condition right now is not allowing him
to play. And I don't know that he would have
played if it wasn't his tournament this weekend.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
What are your thoughts on where Steve is.
Speaker 16 (25:51):
Yeah, he probably would not have played. And he did
meet with us with a small group of reporters for
about twenty minutes. He was very grateful for his time. Yeah,
and we, of course we asked them about his health,
and you know, it's obvious he looks uncomfortable. He's missing
those shots twenty and thirty yards right, which he never
does when he's when he's well and going good, So
you know it has to be affecting him. I know
(26:13):
he talked about getting MRIs and some neck surgery on
tap and but he said he said it's his back
that really bothered him last week. He couldn't get through
the ball and so he was leaving everything out to
the right. I think Dennis talked about that a little
bit ago, but he's got to get that addressed. And
like Darren Clark, I asked Darren Clark, you know, you
(26:34):
know the guy was in pain. Do you sympathize? And
Darren said, we need him on this tour. He makes
our tour so much better when he was playing on it.
So hope he gets fixed, and I hope he's back
and playing like we know Steve strikers can play. So yeah,
I hope Steve's healthy and gets gets whatever needs to
be done to get him back out there playing the
way he knows he can play.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
Dennis, for people that are hitting the ball to the right,
what causes that and why is it happening with Steve?
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Well, he he it's called being stuck. Okay, and when
the spine angle to your pelvis is uta whack, not
square like it should be. You cannot rotate to the left.
If you cannot rotate to the left and finish your
stroke to the left, it's going to the right. So
he's trying to do it and he gets into a
certain position and you'll notice all those things. Elbow is leading,
(27:25):
butt ends up in the air, elbow down, butt end down.
But when you when your elbow leads, it's called the block.
And what it does is it blocks the cub from
turning over. So once he gets that right, and my
suggestion to him was just get this over with, get
fixed up right, don't try to We could do things
(27:46):
to fix that, easy enough, We could fix this, We
could do this. But then what there we go again,
and he's he's a field player, and he knows how
I feel. That physics. Get the physics correct will give
you the feel the field will not give you the physics.
And the physics I'm talking about is how his core
body and his pelvis and his you know, spine line up.
(28:09):
So you know, you know, he he has a mind
of his own, you know, and that's what makes him good.
And in the teaching process, what I need to do
is be a resource. So I don't say nothing until
he says something, and then I respond and then it
becomes his idea and then we're good. So but we
(28:30):
got to get better physically.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
Gary.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
Let me give you two final thoughts. One on the
future of this tournament. There's always going to be questions
when you switch venues. I think those questions were answered
that the TPC Wisconsin is going to be a great
venue for this tournament.
Speaker 16 (28:48):
Correct, Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean we've all talked
about your Ridge and how much everyone likes you Ridge,
and it's a great golf course. Totally different kind of
golf course than what we saw last week, but I
think it's a tremendous venue. And I'll tell you what.
Mark Hensby, the Australian came in i think on Friday
after the first round, and I'm prompted. He said, this
(29:10):
is the best golf course we played this year, and
it's probably going to be the best golf course we'll
play all year. And that was just you know, nobody
asked him that. He just came out and said that
about the golf course. So you can tell that the
players really appreciated playing a course that was in such.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Great condition, and then the women's stayed open. We began
today in Lacrosse. Chan leads at one under par after
the opening round. A couple of names of note. Bobby
Stricker is in seventh place shot of four over par today,
and Izzy is also tied for fourteenth.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
With around I'm sure she's not thrilled with seven over, but.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
So Gary, that the big time golf in this state continues,
that this is the busy time.
Speaker 16 (29:55):
Yeah, we've got the obviously the WA Boyce State Tournament
going on, and the women's stayed open, two more days
to go, and add thirty trolls. I've been pressed into
action and writing about it tonight, saw that weeping up here.
I'm going to call Chloe Jann and at least Covid
who was in second place, Kate Brody, a bunch of
badgers up there, and yeah, and it just doesn't end.
(30:18):
There's a lat tournaments still to go this year.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Always great to visit with you, Gary, and was good
to have you here this weekend. We'll look forward to
visiting again next week.
Speaker 11 (30:27):
Now.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
The old guy Hensby, I hope that he doesn't cash
that check.
Speaker 5 (30:33):
That's right, he's going to ask how much that I
thought it was a snicker bar.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
He wanted money.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Gary, thanks again, We appreciate it. We'll talk again next week.
Thanks so much, Gay, Gary Demato, Wisconsin Golf is the website.

Amfam Championship that wrapped up at TPC.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Wisconsin this weekend.
Speaker 3 (34:34):
And Nate, I'll start with the with the congratulations because
you and your staff have once again put on a
fantastic tournament.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
I know there is a ton of work.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
It's a labor of love and a passion for you
and your staff and congratulations on what you just did.
Speaker 18 (34:50):
Good evening and appreciate the kind words. Yeah, it's definitely
a team effort. Everybody rallied together and you know, starting
at a new venue ultimately almost a full reset for
us from a tournament operations standpoint, But everybody stepped up
and a lot of unique elements came about throughout the week.
But everybody handles it well and by all the courts
(35:12):
here as we sit here the day after, we're definitely
pleased with the results.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
Yeah, so Nate, let's talk about that. You talk about
a full reset.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
You've got a great staff that has put on this
tournament for a number of years since twenty sixteen at
University Ridge, but it is a complete reset. What was
the initial reaction is once you got spectators on site
and had that flow because there are adjustments, what was
some of that give and take for you and your staff.
Speaker 18 (35:38):
Yeah, early in the week as we hosted the pro
ams and some of the sponsor receptions and some of
those other private events on the golf course, things really
kind of fell into place. Well. Though the initial reactions
of how the venues were built were positively received. Throughout
the pro am, they really felt the venue just showed well,
and it just just lit up when we got all
our signage and branding in place, and so those initial
(36:01):
comments and feedback of using our venues, using the clubhouse
all was go in the right direction, and the logistics
and the flow of how players come and go and
caddies and the media and all those entities and volunteers
coming and going kind of naturally really developed really well
during the week. So when we knew we got to Friday,
the last element was bringing the fans in and just
(36:22):
from the get go, our shuttle program worked as we expected.
Just as they came into the venue, we were just
starting to see where they would go and watch golf
and really just were pleased with all that came together.
And the comments right away from the get go from
the fans were they were excited, they loved the dual
hole viewing, just really liked all the ways the course
was set up for them to engauge, and it just
(36:45):
got us off the right foot early in the week,
and then as Friday and Saturday continued to go along,
and it just progressively got better and better as the
crowds got larger and larger.
Speaker 5 (36:53):
Nate from the perspective of the PGA Tour and the
players initially, and I know you'll get further reactions, but overall,
what'd you're here?
Speaker 18 (37:04):
Yeah, positively received. Talked to a number of them during
the pro am in the locker room, before or after
the rounds, and especially Sunday as they were leaving town,
and all positively well received. They liked the golf course,
the conditions, the greens, the fairways, teas were phenomenal. So,
you know, kudos to Derek Leonard and his entire staff
(37:26):
are preparing a golf course that the players liked. I
heard the word a lot, true test of golf, so
they could see the golf course.
Speaker 16 (37:32):
In front of them.
Speaker 18 (37:33):
They knew they weren't blind shots, so they knew where
they were going once they learned their lines, their yardages.
But it certainly was a challenge the players acknowledged. You know,
I think the true test of golf statement the knowledge
is it's fair. But it was going to work them
and they thought the team format was the right fit.
And that team element really came to life throughout the
entire early part of the week and then really into
(37:54):
the weekend. You could tell they were really having fun.
Really enjoying it, and just it set a set a
good set for us moving forward that that right venue,
right format. Players really enjoyed the event.
Speaker 3 (38:06):
So I don't know that you officially release spectator numbers
or have in the past, but how would this compare
from what you have done in years past on numbers
of people through the gates and on the grounds.
Speaker 18 (38:20):
Yeah, as we were going into the event, our sponsorship
was at a new all time high. From that standpoint,
our ticket sales were pacing well ahead of past years,
so we knew that was going extremely well. As we
got into the week and the weekend and daily results
were coming in, our concession record were breaking new record.
So all things considered, it was definitely a highly successful event.
(38:44):
Really pleased on all fronts from that standpoint, and you
could see it in the crowds. You could just see
how they were growing every day. And what was unique
as we learned from the crowds of our venues where
we've built them, certainly filled up quickly, but we saw
people walking the golf course and that was a unique element.
Certainly saw that at you Ridge, but because you could
visually see all corners of the property, it was nice
(39:06):
to see the fans follow along get out on the
golf course and they could see it. You could sit
on fifteen green and then they look down to sixteen
and it's like, okay, let's walk there. And then they
get to sixteen and you could see other parts of
the golf course. So they definitely walked around, which was great.
I think it really spread the property out. The players
noticed it, the fans were following along that all corners
(39:26):
of the property had engagement and really unique element that
as we saw the construction of the process of our
venues going and you could see dual hole viewing coming
to life, and you could see the entire property. The
way the fans embraced it really was unique and exciting.
Speaker 16 (39:42):
For all of us.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
Nate, I know the numbers aren't in yet, but I
think it's good to remind people about this tournament wondering
about the value of it and that kind of thing.
The proceeds, where did they go and what's the economic impact.
I know, again we don't have this year's number, but
just give us as kind of a summary of what
(40:05):
this has done for the local and the area and
that type of thing in the past tournaments.
Speaker 18 (40:12):
Yeah, as you first on the starting end, as I
touched on with sponsorship revenue growing, you know, there's there's
the element though of really keeping our tournament fan friendly.
You know, adult tickets or kids are free, Military members,
first responders are complimentary. So it really is family friendly
from the front end. And then we had we were
starting to hear some comments on the golf course and
(40:32):
from fans and attendance. They're saying, Poy, your confessions are
really extremely low. Well, that's by We've been doing that
for the last three to four years. That's our way
to get back to the fans. We're directly bringing the
prices down so the fans can really enjoy it. And
you could see the families lining up that come and
have a burger in a soda and a water and
(40:53):
it's it's not going to break the bank. And that
made it more, you know, family friendly and engaging from
the fan standpoint. Now fast or as we get to
the ending results, Yes, charitable impact is significant. We're just
under twenty million in lifetime charity will be breaking through
that twenty million dollar mark this year and over one
hundred million dollars in economic impact. When you see all
the players, the caddies, the fans all descending on Madison
(41:16):
and filling up our hotels around the area.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
So you'll you obviously in what you do, you'll get
the feedback and you guys will meet amongst yourselves and
you talk with Kit McBride and their staff. And then
Steve Strucker mentioned yesterday post round that they'll talk about format,
you know, in this two man game, the better ball
to scramble, the better ball, and that they'll they'll maybe
(41:41):
tweak that. How does that process play out and when
does twenty twenty six planning in that regard begin.
Speaker 18 (41:47):
Yeah, twenty six planning began weeks ago as as construction
was going. You're one from a fan perspective and all
that you're seeing some unique elements and how the build
is going and how you might tweak a thing here
or there. So we already were starting it from that lens.
As the players were getting on site and getting involved,
you can kind of, you know, start to hear their feedback.
(42:09):
And then as Steve mentioned, yeah, let's continue to look
at what the format is on all three days that
continue to make it fun and engaging as long as
as well as eligibility, How the how the partnerships are developed,
how the fields developed. All that and those conversations happened
during the week with the PGA Tour already happened post event,
(42:29):
just with some ideas, nothing firm. Ultimately, it ultimately goes
to the Player Advisory Board and then they have they
have vote and ultimately approval on formats and suggestions. So
it's a collaborative process. It takes time. I do sit
on the Player Advisory Board of the tournament representative for
all our tournaments, so I'll be in the room to
(42:50):
have those conversations. But all of it isn't It isn't
coming about because anything went wrong. It's just how you
keep making it better and just tweaking elements to just
keep making it that much better and work really well.
But none of those ideas are coming off of the
notion that something didn't go right this week. Everything went
above and beyond the expectation nat In.
Speaker 5 (43:12):
Fact, the suggestion already coming from some people that were
out there and saw it and that kind of thing. Hey,
they could add stands around thirteen and fourteen and kind
of fill that in round seventeen, thinking boy, that'd be
a nice area for viewing too.
Speaker 18 (43:30):
You're exactly right. You know, what we talked as a
team a lot about is, Okay, we're going to build
venues on your finishing hole. That's kind of the natural
progression and PGA Tour events you build on the finishing holes.
But we needed to see where the fans go. You know,
we can build venues, but you also you know, the
fans will tell you where they want to watch golf,
and they certainly filled our venues, so we knew we
(43:51):
found the right spot. But you touched on fourteen Green
was full most.
Speaker 16 (43:55):
Of the day.
Speaker 18 (43:56):
It was really interesting right from the get go that
fans were starting to work their way out to the
golf course. So definitely, how are we going to grow
and evolve fourteen Green seventeen? Of course great Part three
will continue to evolve. That sixteen driveabill Part four was
extremely wild. We had a group fans were really having
a great time. I could see the players engaging with
(44:16):
the fans in those venues on sixteen both the Key
and the Green. So we have room to grow and
that'll be great. Our fans will keep telling us that
our sponsors will as well, and we'll continue to get
better and grow in that sense.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
Nate, congratulations finish the way we began. You and your
staff do a fantastic job. This golf course showed incredibly well.
The tournament was very entertaining by all rights. Just congratulations
on a tremendous week. We'll look forward to a lot
of talk about twenty twenty six, but rest up and
get that process going.
Speaker 2 (44:49):
And thank you again for being with us.
Speaker 18 (44:51):
Well, thank you again, as I touched on team effort
and it couldn't be more proud of our entire team
of bringing this together. And thank you to the community
for coming out and embrace in the event. Couldn't do
without our fans, and we're truly appreciated. They have their.
Speaker 3 (45:04):
Passionate sport tournament director in Nate Pokratz joining us, and
we've talked to Nate.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
Nate, thank you.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
We've talked to Nate throughout the process, and you know
many times we both visited on the year and off
the air about how great they have done as a
staff this year.
Speaker 5 (45:20):
Over a thousand volunteers for this tournament.
Speaker 4 (45:25):
Yeah, they're looking for balls.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
Dave mccannon and I wonder how many hen get.
Speaker 4 (45:31):
This guy here. He's very good. He may be one
of the better ones. If anybody who was a tournament,
he's gotta going. He's already told she's working on twenty
six and stuff like that. I uh, and you notice
how he talked a lot, but he didn't tell you
very much. Well, you knows on the job. But the
(45:53):
other thing is is that it when you when he
addresses an issue very calm, it comes up with an
answer her. But he listens for a suggestion and then
goes from there. So it's he's really good to work with,
very good.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
To work well.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
Fantastic tournament. We'll we'll continue this conversation as we roll forward.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
This week is the US Open, by the way at Oakmont, which.

Speaker 5 (46:37):

Speaker 2 (46:40):
Oh you didn't get on TV.
Speaker 5 (46:42):
Huh he Experiencedeah, I didn't get it.

a deal. We have Mark and he's on the show
talking all the time, floundering around and something like that.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
Might have something to do with sixteen majors.
Speaker 4 (46:56):
Yeah, but that's but you can barely sit in the chair.
Yeah no, And I had an opportunity there. They could
have been there with the pop ball cut.
Speaker 2 (47:08):
Oh boy. Yeah, that's why I wouldn't do it.
Speaker 3 (47:11):
And we'll take a break. This is talking golf at

Speaker 2 (50:22):
Back with you.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
A couple of more shorter segments on talking golf at
TPC Wisconsin. Mikeller Dennis is one, Paul Brown, Dave mccannor engineer.
So this week the US Open will be played at
Oakmont at Pennsylvania. One of the things about US Opens,
ended about Oakmont in particular is really lightning fast greens.
Now those members that are to come out and play
here this week got fast greens now, So there no
(50:44):
but the question is more of a lesson question or
playability question when somebody's going to go play greens that
are fast what's the advice?
Speaker 2 (50:53):
How do they adapt?
Speaker 4 (50:55):
Well, you know, it's how far you take it back.
Whenever you're going to hit the ball, it's going to
be difficult to control the distance. So no risk break,
only forward movement. That's how it works. That's how you
should put anyway. So but there the greens are undulating also,
so it's tough. But how tough can it be when
(51:16):
this one guy shot a sixty three there?
Speaker 2 (51:19):
Oh oh, oh that's.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
Where he shot the sixty three? Is it at Oakmont?
Johnny Miller?
Speaker 5 (51:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (51:26):
How hard can it be? The guy shoot sixty three
at a tournament? You and your brother both played deck werds.
I didn't keep my brother played. I had to work
that week, but he made. He played, and he played
in the open that he didn't make the company.
Speaker 5 (51:40):
Played good.
Speaker 4 (51:41):
But I know what he did, and I asked him
about it. He's hitting balls, practicing, hit too many balls.
You know, you're so tired by the time the tournament
starts you can't finish, you know. So it's something he
would learn. You know it's going. But he played, and
that's pretty good played and open.
Speaker 2 (51:54):
Yeah, it'll it'll be fun to watch. And this is
what happens in the golf season.
Speaker 3 (51:58):
You know, after a week from today, you'll be three
quarters of the way through the major championship season.
Speaker 5 (52:05):
Okay, mister Tizziani, based on good putting, who's your pick
for this week?
Speaker 2 (52:10):
Same guy, Scotty.
Speaker 5 (52:12):
Scotty.
Speaker 4 (52:13):
There's no question. He's just so much better than everybody else,
and he's got the right attitude to do it, and
he's playing just for the sake of playing. I think
money makes a difference, but he hasn't got there yet.
And he hasn't he hasn't hurt his back yet, you know,
falling off his wallet carrying that. He is really good.
(52:36):
I mean, there's no question about it. Hits all the fairways.
His ability to scramble is great. But watch putting. I mean,
if he's making busts over you know.
Speaker 3 (52:46):
Well and I it appears to me to go back
to your previous comment about money not getting in his
way yet, is he wants to win? I mean, he
wants to beat the guy that's next to him. His
goal is to win.
Speaker 4 (52:57):
You know, some of those players in the Hogan area
and stuff like that, that was their goal was to win.
Some of these guys are motive by a motivated by
a whole different deal. I mean, I look at all
the stuff they got on their hats and on their
shirts and on their sweaters. They looked like they should
be in Indianapolis for five hundred, you know, all that stuff.
(53:18):
But you can't blame them for that year. I mean,
that's what the that's what the gig is. And I
think you got some players. They have families now, they
got young kids. The time, they don't have the time
to be at these tournaments. So they're playing twelve thirteen
tournaments a year. Well, you can't do that. Nicholas did it,
and he was halfway decent. But you know, this guy
(53:39):
Scheffer's really pretty good when you played. Do you have
a sponsor who wasn't back in those days? You know,
I had a guy he was from out in California
and at that time he gave me fifteen I think
fifteen thousand bucks a year.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
You are rich.
Speaker 5 (53:57):
Wow, what do you have to do? You have to wear?
Speaker 4 (54:00):
Well? You know he had or what did you do? No,
I didn't do any of that. I had to make
sure he got any money that I want. He got
his money back, you know, right away. But I ran
out of money really quick out in California, and you know,
I happened to finish. I didn't have anything, it didn't
no car, and I had enough money to get an
airplane back. So I went down to play in a tournament.
(54:20):
It was an ancillary tournament. It was one of the oh,
one of those tournaments. Anyway, I got there and I
finished second and the second place was three thousand dollars.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
Can you believe it? Wow?
Speaker 4 (54:35):
And I convinced the guy can he give me the
money before I left the tournament? Not send me. I
can't send it any place I needed. And I bet
the first thing I did, you know, pay this guy back.
I had to pay him back five hundred bucks. And
then I got an airplane ticket and I got from
I got I got back home, had my home over
picked me up there there. Well, but you used.
Speaker 5 (54:57):
To travel in your car and sleep in your car.
Speaker 4 (54:59):
Right, yeah. I had a nice in the back. I
had a you know, a bed in the back and
my three fifty seven right underneath there. So stay right
there parking the parking lot of the course that we
played at, and I would and take a shower and
that sort of stuff, and then stay in the car
and then winger Bob Williams, remember when your here used
to work here. After a while, I got the fly
(55:19):
a few times, so he'd go. He'd take the car
and drive down the interstate, window down. He's only got
one arm and also he had one arm stack. But
it was fun. It's totally different now, however, than it was,
because we used to travel sometimes five guys in the
car and uh, if you pass gas in the car,
they threw out. That was down to four guys.
Speaker 3 (55:43):
