Golf is brought to you by American Family Insurance, Oak
Park Place, Wild Rock Golf Club, Mercedes Benz of Madison,
TPC Wisconsin University, Ridge Golf Course, Ridge Top Exteriors, Southern
Italy Imports, and Novada Bob's. Now here's your foursome for

(00:26):
Talking Golf. Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer, Dennis Tizziani, Wisconsin
Broadcaster Hall of Famer, Paul Brown, Wisconsin premier golf reporter
Gary Demato and host of his daily statewide sports talk show,
Mike Keller.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
And we welcome you in to Talking Golf on a
Monday night at TPC Wisconsin. I'm Mike, Paul Brown, Dennis DIZZIONI,
Dave McCann is pushing most of the right buttons usually
and we welcome him here as well as we get underway,
and we won't banter it all here. Welcome in Steve
Stricker who joins us out of the gates. Mario Tizzyani

(01:04):
will join us in about thirty minutes, Scary Tomatowa in between,
and to keep in the family, Bobby Stricker today at
about six four. Pretty good lineup yeah, Gary can't play,
but the other guys three good Steve, How are you good?

Speaker 3 (01:23):
How are you guys?

Speaker 2 (01:24):
We're doing great and let's get a day update. Is
he's playing a little bit and you were up where
she's in some match plays, So give us a little
update on what the little one did today.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yes, she's playing in the women's match play event up
at Old Hickory and beaver Nam. We watched her this afternoon.
She's binging a qualifying round. She shot even fire, qualified
second the low thirty two, then going to match play.
So she won her first match this afternoon, four and
three against a pretty tough little competitor, this girl and

(02:00):
you know was hanging tough for a long time. And
Izzy was I think two hunder part this afternoon. So
she played really well and did a lot of good things.
Drove the ball well and made some clutch putts when
she had to. So it was fun to watch. And
I'm not sure who she plays tomorrow, but if she
continues to win, if she wins in the morning, she'll
play a match in the afternoon again, and you just

(02:22):
keep going. I think Wednesday, you know, afternoon, I think
they just there's two more matches a day to get
it done well.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Since, yeah, since you finished here in the NFAM eight
days ago, that's been kind of your path. You went
to the State Open over in Lacrosse to watch both
girls play, and then some izzy stuff this week. So
we didn't get a chance of busy with you last
week you were at the Women's State Open. So let's
let's go back and talk about the AMFAM Championship and

(02:52):
your your thoughts on how that tournament went. We'll ask
the bigger picture questions first, your impressions and your feeling
about the venue change and being here at a course
that obviously you designed and certainly have great knowledge of.
How did you think it went?

Speaker 3 (03:08):
I thought it went way beyond all our expectations. You know,
anytime you take an event like we had over at
University Ridge and it was a successful event there, and
you know, bringing it to a new spot, you know,
there's a lot of unknowns, right, and but everything went

(03:30):
so well. Business group there at the TPC was phenomenal,
you know, from from inside the outside. You know, his
staff was so accommodating, and the players felt it, they
felt welcome. The course held up. I got a lot
of positive reports, Uh, you know, from players and even

(03:53):
I would ask, you know, where guys are really going
to event their frustration about a golf courses that when
they're signing their score card at the end of the day.
And so I asked the tour staff, you know, any
negative feedback, and they said no, they come in and
they were super happy about it. And the team event

(04:15):
I think helped in that way, you know. I mean,
it's a demanding course off the tea, and to have
a partner in your back pocket was actually a lot
of fun and it made you at times have to
sit up, step up and hit a drive. I left
Mario hanging a few times. He left me hanging a
few times. But that's what made it fun, knowing that

(04:35):
you had to hit a shot and come through for
your partner, so you know, the course is in great shape.
There really wasn't any negatives that I heard of whatsoever, Steve.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
I listened to a lot of the press conferences in
those situations and that kind of thing, and what it was,
I did not hear a negative word. What did you
hear from the players in Port about the golf course?
What did they like about it or what did they
say about it.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
They they loved the green complexes, they loved the condition
of the golf course. I think the green complexes, we
were coming off a couple of weeks of just crazy greens.
One at Congressional was a redo there at Congressional and
they really made these greens super severe and bizarre in

(05:26):
some ways. A lot of players didn't like that. And
then a redo in Iowa at the at our Champion
Sewer event there too, and not a lot of positive
feedback from that redo either. So when they came to
TPC and you know, had these green complexes that were
fair but tough, but you know, not a tremendous amount

(05:50):
of movement, but just enough kind of thing, I think
they really appreciated that. And the course they said, you know,
couldn't have been any in any better shape than it was.
So and just again we try to treat him well
as Nate and his team, you know from our you know,
our team treats the players really well, and it's just

(06:12):
one of those events that they really appreciate and they
really enjoyed PPC this year.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Steve Stricker joining us on talking golf at TPC Wisconsin. Steve,
when you did your post Round interview with John Cook
on Sunday afternoon. You immediately talked about one of his
questions was that format, and you talked about the potential
of at least moving it a little bit of format
wise in maybe a modified alternate shot. What are your

(06:39):
thoughts now a week removed from that concept and how
does that process play itself out?

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yeah, I think we definitely could do that. I think
what I'd like to do is get, you know, almost
pull the players. I mean, I feel like, you know,
we're in a position, you know, we want to make
them happy. You know. I want guys to come here
to play, to have fun and not upset the apple
cart really, you know, and just make sure that they

(07:05):
they want to come and play an event that they
want to be at and have fun doing it. And
I know they did this year. So if we kind
of test them and see if if a modified alternate
shot where both guys drive it off the off the
tee and then you take the best one and alternate
from there, I think that's very doable, you know, And

(07:26):
I think that would be a separator too. Even though
those guys won by I think four shots this year,
you know, it kind of separates that you have to
you have to alternate, and you have to rely on
your partner even more. So it's definitely we'll do it,
but you know, some guys mentioned that it's it would
be a good change if we were to do it.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Could you finish that way on day? Like, if you
did modify the format, would that be your finishing day
in your mind? And not to you're not there yet,
but in your mind, would that be your finishing day?

Speaker 3 (07:58):
No? Probably not? I think, ok, I think that would
be the middle rounds, you know, I think you stick
it in the middle and.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
Thinking about you and your health or what's ahead. What
can you tell us at this point?

Speaker 3 (08:11):
You know, there's my back has really been linking and
not I don't even know to be quite out, giving
me some problems. So I went to see a chiropractor
on Friday. I'm doing some things with him to try
to alleviate some of the pain. And it's, uh, yeah,

(08:32):
your guess is as good as mine right now, Paul,
I am frustrated, for sure. I tried to I can
go out and play still, and they say I can't
hurt anything anymore. But it's it's just not it's not me.
You know, it's not my game, it's not how I
feel on the golf course, and that's that's been the
frustrating part. So take some time to figure it out

(08:53):
and hopefully maybe even ask some more doctors and see
if there's anything I can do well.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
One of the things that you did say in the
interview process during the tournament is when you're spending more
time getting ready to play and getting ready to work
on your game than you are actually doing those things,
that that's a tremendous adjustment and hard for you or
anybody to handle.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yeah, and I think, you know, the amount of time
that I've been able to put in isn't been quality
time either, just because I feel it, you know, the
next day, that night, you know, I'm walking around like
old man. I feel like I shouldn't be again, and
so that part is, that part is irritating. So yeah,

(09:42):
I may just take the rest of this year and
try to figure out what the heck's going on and
see if I can't iron a few things out and
try to get back healthier and playing better.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Steve, We're going to visit with Mario in about twenty minutes,
and I just I'll go back to what you were
saying host Round on a couple of the days of
the tournament. How much fun that must have been for
both of you to play together in a team format.
I know it's eight days removed, nine days removed from
the tournament, but that had to be such a cool
thing for the two of you to do.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
It really was. Yeah, And I had a feeling we
could contend and win matching our two games together. He
does so many good things and I'm not doing as
many good things as of late. And I felt like
I could lean on him a little bit and he
could lean on me in some regards. So I felt
like we made a good team. And yeah, you know,

(10:38):
Sunday we got off to a good start and then
you know, he left me hanging early and then I
left him hanging a lot at the end. And that's
not ideal when you're trying to you know, you want
two birdie putts at it, you know, and a team
event like we were playing on Sunday in the best
ball format. So and we didn't do that. So and

(10:59):
I really is at the turn, you know, ten, eleven
and twelve, I had a birdie putt at ten and
you know, about a eight footer that I missed, and
then three putt at eleven for par and then and
then he stuffs it in there at twelve and he missed.
So that stretch there, ten eleven, twelve was kind of
the difference maker where if we make those and they
still do it, we're only one shot behind with you know,

(11:21):
those five five holes to play, so or yeah, six
holes to play, so it would have been I felt
like a little different story, but we were right in there.
It was ton of fun. I'm already looking forward to
next year because it was. It was so much fun
to be with him and him do his thing, and

(11:42):
he did great though.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Steve, you you were with him a lot and that
kind of thing. The growth that he has shown. How
close in your mind is he and where's he really
improved as a player. How close is he potentially being
a regular on the Champions.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
Yeah, sure, yeah, he's super close.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
You know.

Speaker 3 (12:01):
I think for Mario it's always been about the little things,
you know, the managing of his game sometimes, the you know,
the the crucial up and down, his short game, wedge play,
uh and then putting, you know, kind of the little
little game of the of the whole game, you know,
the small ball or whatever you want to call like

(12:24):
in baseball, you know, something like that, where he's just
missing some of that. You know, he does so much
good of the long game, you know, the hitting long irons,
and he's a pretty good driver of the ball, and
and you know, he just has so much talent when
it comes to that, and he's just missing a little
bit of that small stuff. And I think, you know,

(12:46):
making that putt like you did on the last hole,
I think, you know, I told him, I'm like Mario,
that's going to do you wonder wonders, you know. I mean,
he stepped up there and all that money is, you know,
is important, probably a thirty forty thousand dollars putts that
he made on the last hole, and you know, so
he's going to remember that, He's going to remember how

(13:07):
he felt there and that he was able to do it.
So yeah, a lot of good things and he's super
super close to just win in one of these or
just continuing to solid play like he's been.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
Steve one final one that I have and it's a coming.
I told Dennis about this. Tim Herron, I thought, made
the comment in his press conference that kind of sums
up this whole operation here. First thing he said when
he sat down, he said, hey, this is kind of nice.
I've not been in this position where I've been in

(13:42):
the press ten.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
For about three years, so lumpy.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
But he said, I have three young sons playing golf,
and he said, I'd like to bring him to TPC
in Wisconsin for a week or two. Let him play
and experience that goal golf course, the facilities that are there,
the instruction level that you can get, and those guys

(14:08):
would be totally prepared to play or at least understand
what they would need to do to play at the
college level. And I thought, Bingal, there's the one that
kind of summarizes this whole thing.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
Yeah, very much. So if you can, if you can
manage your way around TPC Wisconsin and put up some
good scores, you're gonna you're going to go places, just
because it's demanding off the tee, the green complexes, there's
a lot of runoff areas, chipping areas. But it's got
the whole package, you know, it's got everything. It's got

(14:44):
some wide open holes too, you know, where you can
let it, let it fly if you want to. So
it's got a little bit of everything, but uh, you're
really going to have to manage your game around TPC
Wisconsin to play well there. And that's the fun of golf,
right is trying to conquer a golf course, and no
one can ever conquer and golf course. You're always trying to,
you know, learn and do better each and every time

(15:07):
you go out there. But that's the fun part of that.
It's plays different every day. The wind changes and all
of a sudden, the whole play is totally different. So
that's the neat part.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Steve, appreciate the time you spend with us one quick
one on the way out the USGA and the US
Open finishing up. I don't know how much you paid
attention to it, but JJ smawn on that finish and
your overall thoughts on those USGA courses by a half
inch rough and thirteen and fourteen on the stimps your
view of what we just saw this weekend, Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Thought, you know, I mean, what an incredible way to
finish and win a tournament. You know, I mean he's
five over through six holes and then to bounce back
like that, that just goes to show you that he
kept his mental strength and check and just kind of
kept plugging away and started getting some breaks. So really cool.
He's a great guy, so that part was super cool.

(16:01):
As far as the setup, you know, oakemand is typically
that hard, you know. I mean they typically play that
course hard, even for their membership, you know. I I've
heard they sometimes slow the greens down when the usk
comes there, so it's they probably don't play with that

(16:22):
type of rough, but it's you know, difficult golf course.
I think the membership, you know, likes to see that
there typically over the years, and then when the US
Open has been there, the score has been high over par,
right around par. I thought it's very interesting to watch.
I watched it all yesterday, and you know, it's one

(16:42):
time out of the year where players have to suck
it up and do something a little bit different, you know,
And and I enjoyed that mentality when I played, you know,
when you felt like a par was a good score.
So it's fun to watch. I don't I don't think
a steady diet of that would be good for any bud,
for anybody, but one week out of here, it was

(17:04):
a lot of fun to watch.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
Again, Steve, thanks for the time you spend with us,
all the best of you. We're thinking about you and
watching what the girls do too, and we'll visit again soon.

I'm gonna hold on, Tiss. He's got something, but I
don't know where He's got something for you. But we're

(21:18):
not going to go there yet, So Ittis is going
to have to be patient just for a minute. Yeah,
your thoughts on the US Open with with the finish,
we had the course set up, the winning score only
one player under par. Just your overall thoughts of what
we saw at Oakmont this weekend.

Speaker 11 (21:35):
Yeah, I just heard Steve's comments, and you know, the
way that spawn started the final round, I think, you know,
ninety nine percent of golfers would have bulleted, bulleted up
the tent. Just an amazing finish by him on that
back nine and to Bertie the last two holes in
the US Open to win, and the sixty four foot
part he made on the eighteen coal which was the

(21:56):
longest put anybody made all week at the US Open.
And now he had to teach. Of course, you know,
he got to see the guy put before him, so
he saw the line. But still you have to roll
it and make it, so I just thought it was
just an incredible finish. One week a year, I think
it's fun watching guys try to hack balls out of
that kind of rough and try to deal with those

(22:18):
kind of greens. Like Steve said, I don't think you're
going to watch that every week, but in one or
two weeks a year, I think it's very entertaining to
watch that. I thought it was a great UIs open.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
I thought that Spawn's biggest moment of the day was
his putt on twelve. That downhill super fast. He barely
gets it rolling, but I thought that changed the momentum.
It's after the weather delay he comes back out and
he made that birdie. That and the tea shot on
seventeen are I know everybody's going to talk about the
putt on eighteen, but those two shots to me are remarkable.

Speaker 11 (22:51):
Yeah, the tea shot on seventeen was as good as
it kids. He made a forty footer on twelve, a
twenty two footer later on, and then a.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
Six four footer.

Speaker 11 (23:00):
So he buried three really long cuts on those greens.
With the US Open hanging in the balance, you go.

Speaker 12 (23:08):
Are you going to cash?

Speaker 11 (23:09):
Oh?

Speaker 12 (23:09):
Boy, are you going to cash that check from the USGA.
You did what you're talking about? It's terrible. Since when
do you play golf all that? You can't see your
shoes here in there? If you drop your club and
drop you lose the club. That's not golf. That that's
not there's nothing to do with it. And when you
have green speeds in that fourteen and fifteen, that's a joke,

(23:31):
especially there that course doesn't need to be doing. But
they want to preserve their immature beat the pro.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Yeah, that's a beat the pro. You know that's your
us G A p G. All right, but no, now, no, listen,
you've been quiet the whole show, other than that moment
right there. Yeah, and you've been waiting on whatever. This
is all I want to know.

Speaker 12 (23:49):
I want to know when I go over to Rome?
Am I going to get it? The motto edy pizza?

Speaker 11 (24:00):
What are you talking about?

Speaker 3 (24:02):
Oh boy?

Speaker 11 (24:03):
What what you did to clarify that? Dennis?

Speaker 12 (24:08):
Oh yeah, well I heard that you're going over to
Rome and you're going to start a business over there.

Speaker 11 (24:13):
Well no, no, I don't know where you heard that from,
but I.

Speaker 12 (24:16):
Am okay, come on, you're gonna be what you're gonna
try to be like me. You're going to be what
a citizen?

Speaker 11 (24:24):
Yeah, my brother and I have a and a couple
of peasants have applied for a citizenship. And where do
you hear that from?

Speaker 12 (24:30):
Never mind, I guess you's got a citizen you're gonna
be You're going to try to be like me?

Speaker 13 (24:37):
Like you?

Speaker 12 (24:39):
Oh, well, Tony Gary, do your model teeny?

Speaker 3 (24:43):
You know.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
He's gonna have a pizza.

Speaker 12 (24:47):
Over in Rome there.

Speaker 11 (24:48):
Yeah, yeah, we're we're thinking about, well, we're trying to
get and maybe we'd spend like a month every other
year in Rome or somewhere in Italy.

Speaker 12 (24:57):
And yeah, it's gonna be a citizen or.

Speaker 11 (25:01):
Like people in the world who know that.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Yeah, well then you don't. Then you don't have much
of a long list to figure out who the mole is. Yeah,
so you're your He figured it out already. I don't
know he knows who it is. Who is he said
her name? I'm not telling who said what he said?

(25:23):
Rob Hernandez.

Speaker 12 (25:24):
Well, maybe I told him I'm going to get him.
I saw and he mentioned about I said, he what
he's going to be a citizen.

Speaker 2 (25:38):
That's too much. Guess who may guess who's getting a
phone call in about six minutes exactly, Rob, don't answer, Yeah,
no kidding. So uh well, okay, so family heritage obviously
is Italian then, because that's the only way you're going
to get citizenship. Is that? Is that what we're getting

(25:59):
at here?

Speaker 11 (26:00):
Yeahy, my grandparents are from near Palermo, Sicily, So yeah, that's.

Speaker 12 (26:05):
They're a product of the Vediterranean invasion down there.

Speaker 9 (26:08):
You know.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
That's well, let me let me ask you another question.
So we have the women's state match play going on
that we talked a little bit about what is he's
got going But Bob go Gorski just won the state
senior match play last week. So now you're telling me
he has won every major w SGA title at all
age levels in his career. So where does he stack up?

(26:32):
He was pro briefly, but where does he stack up
as an amateur golfer in the state of Wisconsin? And
who are some of the better ones? I'll let you
and Dennis go back and forth maybe here a little bit.

Speaker 11 (26:42):
Yeah, that's that's a good question. You know, I don't
know if you disqualify Bob as a pure amateur because
he was a pro for a couple of years, played
some some many tourist stuff and then got reinstated. But
certainly since then, the record he's compiles an amateur is,
you know, second to none. You know, if you're you're
going to talk about peer amateurs, guys who never, like

(27:02):
archigad In turn pro for a while and then won
a bunch of stuff. As a real state amateur, Mark
Bomowski never turned pro. Mark Bomowski won six state ams,
a State Open, a US Senior Amateur, finished runner up
twice in the US Senior Amateur, and made the cut
and the state Amateur in like forty one or forty
two consecutive years. And that's a record nobody is ever

(27:24):
gonna break. Nobody's going to make forty straight cuts in
the state am So I would put Mark at the
top of my list as far as pure amateurs. And
when you look at the women, Maggie Leaf, I think
she's qualified for like twenty four twenty five USGA championships.
There was a woman Dennis might remember, Carol Sorenston Flennikins,
who played out of James wonderful player. Yeah, she had

(27:46):
an unbelievably good amateur record. So there's been, and then
you go way back to Wilford Worley and net Alice
who won ten state ams way back when, and Lin Lardner.
I don't know how you compare all those guys, but
I think Bamowski's at the top of my list for
a pure amateur who never turned pro.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
Two things.

Speaker 12 (28:06):
Two things there, right, Bamowski. But that's all he did
was play golf. He could have been a pro.

Speaker 9 (28:12):
Right.

Speaker 12 (28:13):
The other boy we just talked about Grigorski, you know,
he was a profel well, but he had a full
time job besides as a realtor and as a lawyer.
So you know, uh, and there's a good I'll give
you one good story. I know, we got a lot
of time. Uh. The U he came to Wisconsin, you know,
and played here, and he had a very difficult time

(28:36):
making the team and we would qualify every week. He
couldn't qualify, couldn't make it. So one day he came
here we were qualifying and one of my players, I got,
I got. I caught him not doing the right thing
on the course, cheating, Okay, okay, So we canceled him,
got him out, which gave Bob Gogorski the opportunity now

(28:58):
to be the fifth player on the team. Right, So
he goes out and he shoots seventy five, and he
was just very upset. Can you come up, We'll hit
some balls and I'm not going to eat. I'm not
going to do nothing. Well, he missed an eight footer
on the last toll to shoot sixty two, and that

(29:18):
set him free. That set him off. From that time on,
he became an all Big ten player and off.

Speaker 2 (29:23):
And running well. And I think, I mean, both of
you have knowledge of this, and then we'll have to
go because Mario is going to join us in the
next segment. Both you have knowledge of this. The game
has changed, right, So if you're a great player young,
now you're going to probably try to find your way
to make money at it and turn pro. But there
was time when that won't an option for many people.
You certainly lived through that era.

Speaker 12 (29:44):
But we forgot Simonson, you forgot Caravello, you forgot the
other guy. Amateurs daily who John Daly.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
You know here we're talking about in Wisconsin. Yeah, I
mean the Ams.

Speaker 12 (29:58):
You know these are good players. Mark Bosk, Yes, he's
a good player. I played with the other three guys
and they were real players too. But he's got a record.
But that's what he did. That's all he did. I
don't know did he work at it. I don't know
what his passion was, what his life was like. But
he played golf. We're not taking anything away from him
other than he was totally committed to playing golf. That's

(30:19):
a pro.

Speaker 11 (30:20):
That's true. Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 12 (30:22):
Yeah, yeah, Okay, I wrest He rested his case.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
And anyway, when he's been waiting all day, all afternoon
to get you on the I think so, Gary, we'll
let you go so you can give Rob Hernandez a
calling to be busy right in trouble. He's in trouble.
Thank you, Gary Oil. We always appreciate it. Gary demondol

Today, we thank you for your service. Back with you,
it's talking golf at TPC Wisconsin on a well kind
of a beautiful June night. Weather's going to get warm.
We've had some rain in and around the area, but
summer temperature is going to start to arrive this week.

(34:14):
So for those who love to play golf in summer weather.
We're going to get it here. Mario Tiziani joins us
on the program. Mario, we're so excited to talk to you.
We couldn't catch up last week because of your travel,
But let me begin by just saying congratulations and what
a joy it was to watch you and Steve go
around Friday, Saturday and Sunday a week ago. Congratulations on

(34:36):
a great tournament. I know you wanted one more spot
in the standings, but we still loved watching you go
and congratulations.

Speaker 13 (34:43):
Yeah, thank you. Super fun week, busy week, emotional week.
But yeah, I honestly, besides not winning, it was it
was pretty special. I really couldn't have done it up
much better.

Speaker 4 (34:59):
What did you learn are about your abilities? And uh,
in terms of getting closer to that line of where
you're going to be part of the Champions Store. What
did you take away from the weekend here?

Speaker 11 (35:13):
Uh?

Speaker 13 (35:14):
You mean you mean in my play?

Speaker 6 (35:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (35:18):
Well, you know what, I know. I can play the game,
you know, and and I I had a little chip
on my shoulder that week to prove to myself and
maybe some others that you know, I heard, I heard
some rumblings you know as as the year has gone
on that he picked me because he had to. So

(35:41):
I didn't tell many people that, but I was pretty
motivated to show that I've got a pretty good golf
game as well. So I feel like I held my own,
you know, And I think it's you know, look being
being in contention, being in the last group. I mean,
I'm I was playing with three Ryder cuppers. Yeah, it

(36:03):
can only can only take positives from it, and you
know it just continue to continue to get that self belief.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
Sometimes we uh in doing what I do on sports talk,
I wonder about that edge and that chip on your
shoulder and how it works. It works in other sports
hockey players, basketball players, football players, and I always wonder
how well it works on the golf course. So how
did you channel a little bit of that edge to
to be a positive on the golf course?

Speaker 13 (36:32):
A good question, you know, I think, Yeah, I don't know.
I you know, you try to have you try to
you try to create the chip on your shoulder and
go into every week kind of trying to find that
little spark. But I think when it's just kind of
created organically and naturally, like it was for me, for

(36:53):
whatever reason, it's just kind of tapped into some good golf.
I didn't play great on Sunday. You know, I didn't
have it all, but you know, I do feel like
I had a good week on the course and I
was just really kind of focused, and you know, given
given the week and how much was going on, I
was pretty pretty happy to kind of compartmentalize everything and

(37:16):
go out there and do a decent job.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
We're visiting with Mario Ciziani. We had Steve on Steve
stricker on earlier. He focused in on that last but
the final shot of the weekend and and how significant
a putt that was for you. Can you give us
a sense of what that moment was like and the
focus and making that as it went in the hole
on your last shot?

Speaker 11 (37:40):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 13 (37:41):
Yeah, I was upset at the iron shot. I it
just it was in the first cut and I just
kind of funked it a little and didn't come off.
And you know, I knew walking up there with everything
that was at stake, I really wasn't thinking about making
it at that point. I was just new. I knew
it was a sick and yeah, I didn't hit a

(38:03):
great first putt and I guess I just I knew
that I knew that it would be a positive if
I could just you know, pull it all together and
and make that part of me it felt like it
was to win. It was significant. Yeah, it was significant.
And we didn't make a bogie all week, and you know,
I thought a lot about it. At the same time,

(38:25):
I just kind of fell back on preparation. You know,
I practice, you know, I practice for these moments, and
all you can do is just kind of go through
it and do the best you can. So you know,
when it went in, it felt great. I think, you know, respectfully,
from from Darren and and Thomas bo and Steve and

(38:46):
other people that have made really big putts, I think
they they knew what that meant to me and in general,
so it was a lot of you know, kind of
the head nod and and a wink, and you know,
they're pretty proud.

Speaker 11 (39:00):
So and as was I.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
We're chatting with Mario and Mario, what was the reaction
you heard from the players and your overall thoughts on
the first tournament here at TPC.

Speaker 13 (39:13):
You know, it was very positive. I got text messages
from guys which I've never gotten before, and you know,
they don't they don't have to do that. So they obviously,
you know, whether it was on the plane or back home,
thought about the week and I think everybody was was
in a don't know, you know, they said, look, it
could be great it maybe maybe not. They could flop.

(39:36):
The course was the course was a wild card. I
mean there was people, you know, people thought certain things
about the course just based on what they heard, and
so I think once they got there and they went
around a couple of times, that's probably the main comments
I got was you know, as guys went around it,
they were like, man, this this is.

Speaker 11 (39:55):
A cool spot.

Speaker 13 (39:56):
I mean, it's super playable. You know, the format was awesome,
the turnout was great. Uh, you know, the facilities are great.
I didn't hear any negatives, and keep in mind, I
don't expect them to tell me the negatives. But but
but you know, you can tell when someone's genuine typically

(40:17):
so yeah, I'm rambling, but I think everybody that that
commented loved it.

Speaker 11 (40:22):
I'm sure there's guys that didn't.

Speaker 13 (40:23):
That's fine, and that's gonna happen. You don't have to play.
So but but I think it was I think it
was great. I got a lot of really positive stuff
and yeah, I think people were were were super pumped
up to come and do it.

Speaker 4 (40:39):
Mario, the rest of the year for you, how close
are you to becoming a regular and what's on your
agenda the rest of the way in this season?

Speaker 3 (40:49):
Uh yeah, it's hard to say. I still kind of
sit in that spot where I'm alternates, you know, a
lot of the week. I'm first alternate this week for
the players, I.

Speaker 13 (40:59):
Think it'll be a long shot to get in. I'm
a I'm an alternate for the US Open next week,
which I don't think I'll get in, but I mean
I'll have my opportunities. I just have to be efficient,
you know, and when I play, I have to I
have to you know, produce. So I like the challenge.
You know, I'm sitting forty four. The thirty six is

(41:19):
you know where I'd love to get to. That's that's
the you know, fully exampt next year and all the
way through the playoffs, so you can see how good
week jumps you up. So I just need to I
just need to keep doing what I'm doing and when
I get my opportunities to take advantage of him.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
'tis you know a little bit about this kid's game.
What did you see? Now, you're not going to say
anything here that you didn't already, maybe say to Mario,
but what did you see in his game in the
tournament that was played here?

Speaker 12 (41:46):
Well you'll hit it at that last part was a
big putt. But uh, he's just starting to get going. No, no,
don't forget. I spent ten years not even playing, and
he's just starting to get going. And I think the
more that he plays and finds out he belongs, because
I tell him all the time. You know, every time
you definitely belong, you're beating a lot of people. You
look at the scores of the people who are those

(42:08):
Ryder Cuppers and everything else, and he's beating them. So
it's just a matter of he gets to believe, like anybody,
you get to believe in what you're doing. Here, he
makes a few putts in the critical area, he's off
and running again.

Speaker 2 (42:20):
'tis mari Afinis where I began just how much we
enjoyed it. We end up talking, you know here because
of where we are, we talk about Steve a lot.
But there was a special joy for a lot of
us watching you go around we pay attention to your
scores when in every tournament you're in, but watching you
go around here was a lot of fun personally, a
lot of fun for me and so many others who

(42:41):
have paid attention and admired what you do from afar.
So again i'll say thanks for being with us and congratulations.
It was a lot of fun for us to watch.

Speaker 13 (42:50):
Oh, thank you, that's very nice. I enjoyed doing it.
I enjoyed coming home. You know, Steve's the guy. We
all know that, and I know that. But you know,
it's fun to walk a home excited him. It's fun
to it's fun to be at home on many levels
and play and and you know, I'm not out there
just you know, Kisner says it right.

Speaker 11 (43:10):
It's not a hobby.

Speaker 13 (43:11):
I'm out there to do things. And I'm glad. I'm
glad I could do it in front of people and
that people enjoyed watching it.

Speaker 2 (43:18):
Mario, appreciate it. We'll hope to visit with you again
very soon. Take care of Mario.

Speaker 13 (43:22):
Awesome, all right, guys, take care all.

Speaker 2 (43:24):

Back with you talking golf at TPC Wisconsin Tis. We
spent all this time here listening to what Mario thought
on the tournament, what Steve thought on the tournament Tennis,
it's a week removed. What did you think about the tournament?

Speaker 16 (47:14):
Here?

Speaker 12 (47:16):
Somebody else by the time you got to me, Yeah,
that's okay. Here's the thing, here's the motivation. You know,
the number one concern was that we did a record
of everything. You know, they sold this, They sold it
sold record. Revenue is going to be a record. And
the comrader in this is Children's Hospital. That's number one

(47:37):
Children's hospital, plus all of those other people who write
letters and get money, but Children's Hospital is a big thing.
The second thing is on the membership here. I had
people ten fifteen people come. They really liked that. They
were sincere about coming up and saying how much they
liked how they were treated here in this event. We
had this whole area here, so that was very cool them.

(48:00):
And then after that comes the tournament. I had no
doubts in my mind that they would like what's here.
If they didn't like what's here, that's a good idea,
don't come back.

Speaker 2 (48:10):
Yeah, I don't wonder where you heard that eat.

Speaker 12 (48:14):
But the big item, and we all have to understand
that what the what this is all about is that
children's hospital. And I feel so good that we were
part of that. And you heard what he said about
our staff and how they But you know between the PGA,
between am Fam Foundation and FAM staff, the PGA and
our staff, how they melded together one time, no issues,

(48:38):
It seemed flawless, no issues I had. And I had
another friend of mine come from you know, I drove
in here, I got on the bus, I got over here.
I mean, all those people, I never had a problem
for our first time. It's phenomenal. We're are really looking
forward to the next two years for sure.

Speaker 17 (48:54):
Pretty good, Bobby Stricker, And she's on the line joining
us on her way down to see it was so Bobby,
let me get your perspective because you didn't you weren't
able to take part in the program.

Speaker 2 (49:07):
You're pro, so you can't do that, so you were
a spectator all weekend long. What were your thoughts of
this tournament?

Speaker 16 (49:14):
Yeah, hi, guys, By the way, Hi, it was. It
was so cool. It kind of gets me emotional to
even like think about it and talk about it, just
because of I know how much hard work goes in
like behind the scenes. I get a front row seat
to just like, yeah, the behind the scenes stuff that

(49:36):
nobody gets to see. And yeah, it was, honestly, I know,
a dream come true for a lot of people. But
I'm just so happy for my grandpa and just like
I know, I know that's a dream come true for
him to have a PGA Tour event there, and it
just made it that much more special that we had

(49:57):
my dad and my uncle team up and then intend
on Sunday, Like I don't know, it was like the
coolest anthem that I've ever like been a part of
and witnessed and and has a lot to do with
my family. So it was great.

Speaker 4 (50:13):
Bobby, we know you're on the road Heaton for a tournament.
Give us a status.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
Reporter of where you're at.

Speaker 16 (50:21):
Yeah, I'm at car. I have just got to Saint Louis.
I'm almost to my destination. So I'm playing in a
golf tournament this weekend. I start Thursday, so here a
little a little early. I'm not in the program which
is on Wednesday, so have to play the course tomorrow.
And yeah, I got a four day tournament, which I

(50:44):
haven't had a four day event yet this year, so
that means if I make the cuts after the first
so I'm plumped. The game feels really good. And oh,
baseball game on Friday, go see the Cardinals. So it's
gonna be a fun It's be a fun week.

Speaker 2 (51:03):
You played, Uh, Bobby and is He both played in
the State Open a week ago. You were both top ten.
You were fourth as he was ninth. Give us a
sense of of what you experienced at the Women's Stayed Open.

Speaker 13 (51:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 16 (51:17):
We played Lacrosse Country Club, first time I had ever
been there, and yeah, it was it was very cool,
a very cool golf course. You're in like a a
quarry of a sort and there's a lot of undulation
you're hitting, like you know, up super high to down low.

(51:42):
I mean every hole has has some sort of like hill.
It was a hard walk, honestly, but the greens were
in really good shape. Yeah, it was. It was really fun.
I definitely did not have my best stuff, and I
I am very It's cool encouraging that I did get
forced and didn't feel like I played very good because

(52:05):
I know that there's some better golf in me. But no,
we had a great time and it was nice little
sister trips for Izzy and I.

Speaker 2 (52:14):
Yeah, pretty cool. Final thoughts and I know our audio
is not ideal here The final final thought car the
car and I get it. The final thought on watching
your dad and your uncle play together and how cool
that was You talk about emotional. I imagine there was
some emotion in that, but how amazing and awesome that
was for you?

Speaker 16 (52:34):
Yeah, it was. It was really cool. And my my
two cousins, Mario's two girls were out there with us too,
and obviously my aunt Krusty. So yeah, just to be
able to walk around with them and you know, cheer
on our dads, I mean, like and you know they're
both our uncles also, So I don't know, just like

(52:54):
super unique and I can't wait for next year already.
We always we always talk about how the we after ANFAM,
we're like in an FAM depression. And this year was
like a lot stronger than others just because of yeah,
just how cool it was. So we can't wait for
next year. And I know a lot of people involved

(53:15):
can't wait.

Speaker 2 (53:15):
Also, Bobby, we always appreciate when we get to visit
with you. Best of luck to you in Saint Louis
this week and we'll talk again soon.

Speaker 16 (53:23):
Thank you, guys, Thank you Bobby Stricker honor.

Speaker 2 (53:26):
We're down to Saint Louis and and so this this
is a pretty fun week with Izzy in this in
the match play and they open a week ago and
Bobby playing down in Saint Louis. And you know, you're
not an emotional at least you don't share with us
that you're emotional. But she talks about that that all
of this had has to have been emotional for both

(53:47):
you and your wife, Bobby, and how great this was.

Speaker 12 (53:50):
That's a big item. You know, we had we have priorities,
priorities when I was coaching, and you know, faith family, education, golf.
That's the way they line up. So and that business
of family is a big item for us, and it's
not something that we share, I don't know, it's something
that we do, and a lot of respect for one another,

(54:12):
especially these girls. I mean they're picking off. He's going
down in Mississippi. Dolban's over here, they're gone, they have
their own gig. And to watch easy play today was
really special to see how she's progressing and how good
she is and how good she's going to be, you know,
the same.

Speaker 2 (54:27):
Old thing, Dennis.

Speaker 4 (54:29):
In conclusion, here, there are a lot of people that
obviously didn't talk to you one on one, but I
was here all weekend, and there are a lot of
members in this club who really appreciated what you did
for them for this tournament. You didn't need you didn't
hear it enough times, but I guarantee you a lot

(54:51):
of people felt that way.

Speaker 12 (54:52):
Well. I sat in that room. I know we're closing down.
I sat in the room watch these guys teep on TV.
I see our members going in and it's real quiet
in there, and all of a sudden, one of those
guys makes a putt.

Speaker 2 (55:02):
Holy man, they're jumping off the seats.

Speaker 12 (55:04):
In the bill. So it was really cool and we're
looking forward to next year. But remember that the business
of children's hospital, that's a big item.
