Speaker 3 (00:44):
But I'm not one of them.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Dave.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
We're getting a little echo, just so you know, right
off the bat here, we're getting a at least I
am getting an I'm.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Getting into Okay, So I'm just letting them know, you
guys are all right.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
We get this is the last one of the year,
and then we'll find out at some point in the
fall if we get renewed by the boss who sits
in the middle.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
It's good to.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Have you a noncommittal about it.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Well, I know, yeah, Well, he has certain people he
trusts you'll figure it out whether we're back for how
many seasons, Paul does this for you?

Speaker 4 (01:20):
This is your eleven This has started eleven years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, and that's something Steve.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
And Dennis were sitting in the sports lounge and Dennis said,
we need some kind of publicity and I said, well,
let's think about it for a day or tuning. How
about a radio show.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
There we go.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
I was really meaning, Steve, get off your end, get
off your butt and win something.

Speaker 6 (01:41):
You know, I get some publicity.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
He took that the heart because he did that a
few times between then and Nick. Speaking of that, we
welcome in Steve Stricker to the program, our final show
of this year, and Steve, we appreciate all the time
we get to spend with you and having you on
the show for our final one this year. We say
thank you for that. So I know that the story
kind of came out and we chatted a little bit

(02:05):
last week as well. You did end up having the surgery.
I'll let you fill us in on what you're comfortable
telling us on what happened and where you are now
in that process.

Speaker 7 (02:16):
Yeah, thank you, Thanks for having me on you guys
and congratulations on eleven years. That's pretty cool and your
last episode this year, so congrats to you guys. Yeah,
I had next surgery. They I did a disc replacement
in one of my lower vertebrates in my next the
sixty seven, and went in there. There was a bone

(02:39):
spur in there that was giving me a hard time,
and then the disc was shot, so they clipped the
bone spur off. And then doctor Zaedeblick, who did my
back about eleven years ago, did this surgery as well,
and a great man, great doctor, and.

Speaker 8 (02:58):
Yeah, he went.

Speaker 7 (02:59):
In there, took the bad disc out and then replaced
it with a prosthetic disc basically made out of I
think titanium and ceramic is what it's made out of.
So I'm another half an inch taller. I think they
leg in my herve ray and I now six foot
and a half, I should be able to hit a
couple of yards further. But everything, everything went well. Felt

(03:23):
immediate relief and something in my hand that I had
a lot of tingling and numbing going on in and
right away when I got out of there, that was gone.
Still my shoulder blade is numb, but I think they
said that could come back. Over time. But the whole
thing is just getting the pressure off the nerves. And

(03:44):
I've been starting to work out the last couple of days,
you know, some lighter weights. It doesn't seem like it
affected any strength. So yeah, all in all, I feel
better about it already. You know, walked out of there
in about four hours. It's like an outpatient deal with
It's just crazy. You know, they go into the front
of your neck and you walk out of there. So
it's pretty amazing stuff that they do. And excited at

(04:08):
some point to start hitting it again.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Steve that injury, what impact did it have on your
playing ability? How did it affect you?

Speaker 7 (04:17):
Yeah, I'm I'm not sure. I mean I have two
I've had two issues going on my back, which was
really bothering me during the AMFAM. But the strength issue
down my left arm impacted me at the start of
this year, and that definitely came from my neck, and
I was having a hard time just you know, having
the strength hanging on to the club, making my arm

(04:40):
move through the shot like I normally like to do,
and so I wanted to take care of that for sure.
My back has been feeling great. I haven't hit a
ball for I don't know, six seven, eight weeks probably
and only played maybe four or five times since the AMFAM,
so I've been able to give myself a lot of rest.

(05:02):
It's boring, but it's yeah. I've also enjoyed the time too.
It's I haven't really missed it all that much, although
at times I wish I could hit it, but it's
been good to do some other things.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Steve, when we visited a little bit last week, it
seemed like there was a little bit of a weight
lifted off of you, Like this is emotionally too, from
just the what you've had to go through, your upbeat
and optimistic about what this is going to do for
you in playing again.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Correct, Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
It was one of those things like they said, you know,
you could use surgery and do it. I got like
three different opinions. They're like, there's definitely a need to
do surgery, but he's like if you got your strength back,
and which I did. He's like, you don't have to
if you don't want. But it was in the back

(05:56):
of my mind of like, if it happens again, I'm
out another two or three months and then you know,
really about quality of life. I started to think about
I'm almost you know, I'm fifty eight, and then thinking
I kind of want to take care of this and
clean this up while I'm still in good health and
you know, young enough where it's not an issue and

(06:17):
hopefully never have to deal with again down the road.

Speaker 8 (06:20):
And the you know, the.

Speaker 7 (06:22):
Crazy part is from the time the surgery happened to
being able to hit a ball is like six weeks,
so it's really not that big of time away. I
just had to decide to take this time now, and
which I hadn't played much at all this year, so
I just figured it was a good time to do
it and get it, get it cleaned up.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Steve, we had Mario on last week and he said,
when you had the surgery, he hadn't seen you. But
since the surgery, he said, when I talked to him,
I can hear the enthusiasm, the change in his attitude
and the whole thing. Strictly on the phone. What has
that done for you? And where are you at in
terms of thinking about, for an example, the rest of

(07:03):
the year obviously maybe not until December, or what are
you looking at in terms of your future now?

Speaker 7 (07:09):
Yeah, I'm you know, cautiously optimistic. But I am optimistic,
you know. I mean, I don't think I'll have to
worry about my neck at all. I mean, that was
really the only problem, and it's been an issue. You know,
I had a problem back in twenty twelve or something
like that, almost the same thing where I lost all
this strength. I was bow hunting and I tried to

(07:31):
pull back my bow and my left arm collapsed, and
you know, I lost my strength back then, and then
you know, I got some shots alleviated all that got
better again. So I kind of just have put. That's
really been the only issue, and I took care of it.
So I'm super excited that that's.

Speaker 8 (07:48):
Behind me now.

Speaker 7 (07:50):
And then I get to look forward to trying to
play again, and I'll take it easy. I'll take it slow,
you know, there's no need to rush. And I I'm
hoping to play in December. A couple of times really
the the Champions Tours talking about playing that World Champions
Cup again. It's down in the Tampa area, Tampa, Tampa,

(08:12):
Florida area.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (08:14):
And then hopefully is he and I get invited back
to the pn C, so it'd be a couple of
nice events in December to kind of get ready for
warm up for and then you know, off and running
in January over in Hawaii.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Steve, let me ask you if if you which one
you think happens first full swing with with driver and
long irons or pulling.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
The bow back?

Speaker 8 (08:36):
Uh, pulling the bow back?

Speaker 4 (08:41):
We were right, We were right. Everybody's been saying this
the season and what the heck is that going to
do to him?

Speaker 2 (08:48):
And the answer before I asked it, and he won't.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
You won't use a cross bowl, right, Steve?

Speaker 7 (08:52):
Oh no, Shoot, these guys that use crossbows and sitting blinds,
they're not they're not hunters.

Speaker 8 (08:57):
They're they're country.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Clubs in the middle.

Speaker 7 (09:02):
But no, there was a reason why I did at
August fifth. There is a plan, surel to get that
done with and be ready for the fall soft. I
had my priorities, I think right for this, you know,
is to make sure that I get this hunting season in.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Steve, let's talk a little golf of what's going on now,
because the standings are final for the Ryder Cup, which
will be at beth Page, New York, September twenty sixth
through the twenty eighth. Kegan Bradley is the captain. The
top six are in Scheffler, Spawn, Shoftley, English, Henley and Deshambeau.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Those are the six.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Keegan Bradley is still from a point standpoint obviously to
make the top six, but he's the captain and playing
at a high level. What would your advice and maybe
he's asked you, what would you be willing to share
with us on the decision he has to make as
to his own playing status.

Speaker 7 (09:59):
Yeah, I think, And he hasn't asked me. I think.
I mean, he's a passionate guy. He's a very competitive guy.
The Ryder Cup means a lot to him, as it
does to all of us. But I don't know, he's
gonna have to ask himself like which position does he
really want to I don't know, it's which one does

(10:21):
he want to be in? You know, does he want
to be a player or does he want to be
a captain? And I think then you can go from
there to do both of them. I think would be
tough on his on the player part, you know, to
try to manage all the captain's duties and then and
then try to get your game ready and have a
clear mind to play some great golf that you need

(10:43):
to play. So I think I think he's just got
to ask himself because if he wants to play, then
he's just going to really have to delegate almost everything
else to the assistant captains and just be a player
and get ready to do that, because it's just there's
just so much going on, so many decisions to make,
and either way, he's in an unbelievable position. I mean,

(11:06):
they have the opportunity to captain the team at best Page.

Speaker 8 (11:11):
Is a dream for him, I'm sure, And so yeah,
I think it's.

Speaker 7 (11:15):
Just coming down to which one he really wants to be,
because it's too hard to do both.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
If you take Keegan out.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
As from his own perspective of playing, what is he
going through right now? For captain's picks that have to
be made next Wednesday, You've gone through it. What's he
going through right now?

Speaker 8 (11:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (11:34):
I think he's looking at that top six and he
sees a couple of rookies on there, and Russell Henley
and JJ Spawn and then the other four guys obviously
are you know, have played in this before, And then
he's looking at the next group of guys and maybe
he puts himself in there. Maybe he takes himself out,

(11:55):
that's up to him, but you know he's going to
look to try to balance that out a little bit.
You know, maybe another rookie that's playing really well. I
forget who else is up there?

Speaker 2 (12:07):
Ben Griffin, Yeah, Ben Griffin, Yeah, Thomas are the next
three on the points list, and.

Speaker 7 (12:14):
And Griffin's had a great year, So you got to
believe those three guys are in. So there's nine. I know,
Kegan is eleven. I think I don't know who's in
the tenth and twelve spots, but I think he's just
gonna look there and and actually start looking at pairings.
You know, we did that a lot early on, like
who's gonna pair well with a potential guy that's already

(12:38):
outside the you know, the top six. And you know
that's that's what we did early. You know, we made
pairings based on our picks and who we who we
wanted to pair with the already the guys in the
top six and and potentially, you know, you're probably gonna
pick those seven, eight, nine guys and then who do

(12:59):
they want to pair with outside that top six? You know,
and you start thinking about that right away to make
out the rest of your team.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
Steve, you played in two thousand and eight on the
Ryder Cup team, twenty and ten, twenty and twelve, and
then of course in twenty one captain and set the record.
As you look back, what are your Ryder Cup memories
and what part does that play in your total career
of success? Is that one of the real true highlights?

Speaker 7 (13:29):
H excuse me, Yeah, it really is. I mean, I
think the biggest highlight of my careers is to be
able to captain the team right here in Wisconsin, you know,
at Herb Kohler's place. You know, we developed a friendship
over the years, you know, and to be able to
do that at his place before he passed, that was

(13:50):
something that I was really concerned about because we, you know,
we're looking at him and talking to his you know
people and family about his health. And it was there
for a while. I'm like, cheez, and then COVID hit
pushed us back another year and it would have been
a shame if he wasn't around.

Speaker 8 (14:06):
But yeah, that was that was.

Speaker 7 (14:10):
The top of my career for sure, to be able
to do that. Never thought I'd have that opportunity to
ever captain the Ryder Cup and then the President's Cup,
so pretty special times and to beat him up like
we did here in Wisconsin was also really cool.

Speaker 3 (14:28):
Steve, they're going to play that Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
How much does the course come in to Keegan and
his vice captains in choosing the final team and also pairings,
and how much can they do to give a home
field advantage at a course in the States.

Speaker 7 (14:46):
Yeah, they'll look at that. You know, it's a big course,
you know, but all these guys hit it so far nowadays,
you know, length really isn't an issue. Maybe maybe accuracy
maybe more so than length. You know, there if they
grow the rough up, if Keegan did his homework and
looked at previous Ryder Cups, the rough really won't be

(15:07):
up that high.

Speaker 8 (15:09):
You know.

Speaker 7 (15:09):
We widen the fairways at Whistling Straits a year prior.
I went around there with and the cooler people and
the grounds crew, you know, the head guy there, and
I'm like, can we make these as wide as possible
and let's cut the rough down as shore as we can.
And they were very accommodating. So I'm sure Keegan is

(15:30):
doing the same thing. You know, they probably widened some
of those fairways. Hopefully let our length because usually the
US team has got the length advantage, and then let
our guys let it rip and and if they hit
it in the rough, it's not that big a deal.
And a lot of birdies. You know, you want to
make a lot of birdies when you're at home. You
don't want to be you know, you want to make birdies.

(15:51):
Get the crowd going, get them involved, and build that momentum.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
Steve, let's shift Gearys a little bit and move on
to the FedEx Cup. Back when in your prime day,
so to speak, there was a guy named Tiger Woods.
Today it seems like Scottie Scheffler. He's on a different
planet the way it seems right now with the way
he's playing.

Speaker 7 (16:14):
Yeah, I watched the last hour yesterday and you know,
I wanted to see, you know, how that was going
to all play out. And at that point he had
a one shot lead, and yeah, that chip end that
he did at seventeen was crazy, you know, I mean,
very difficult hole. Everybody was hitting it over there and
trying to make a three, and this guy chips it in.
He played that hole one under I heard and not

(16:35):
even hit the green regulation. So his short game's good.
His head on his shoulders is maybe even more impressive
than anything. I mean, he got fired up there a
little bit, but it wasn't like, you know, a tiger
Wood celebration or anything like that. It looked like he's like, oh,
I got one more hole to play yet. And so

(16:57):
it's pretty cool to watch, you know, and it makes
all of us part of that Ryder Cup team here
in Wisconsin, feel pretty proud when we picked him, and
it seemed like he has taken off ever since. And
he's a great guy, a great family man, and it
couldn't happen to the nicer guy. Really, it's been fun
to watch him.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
Do you think the other players are intimidated by him
right now? I mean in terms of his playing ability
and the way it's gone.

Speaker 7 (17:27):
Yeah, I think when they see his name up there
or second place or top ten or whatever, they're looking
at him like he's gonna make a move. You know,
he just doesn't. He doesn't make a lot of mistakes,
it doesn't seem like and if he does, he scrambles
really well.

Speaker 8 (17:41):
You know.

Speaker 7 (17:41):
The weakest part of his game is probably putting, and
he's you know, starting to do that better. So yeah,
I'm sure they. It's kind of like that Tiger effect,
you know. You see him up around the lead, and
I mean I saw him in second place on Saturday. Sorry,
and I told Nicky, I'm like, oh, there you go.
He's gonna win.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
Another one, kind of like the Champions Tour was for
seven or eight years.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Oh guy, we're talking to Steve.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
Let me last question for me, and that is in
your process and hopefully obviously being healthy and good enough
to have a very good twenty twenty six. Are you
recruiting for this tournament? And you mentioned the name Tiger
Woods came up a few times and he'll be age
eligible next year. How does that process play out for you?

(18:33):
And are you the one that talks to him about
whether he would be willing to come and play in
this tournament.

Speaker 7 (18:40):
Yeah, I'll I'll definitely run it by him and we'd
love to have him. Yeah, and hopefully, I don't I
don't know if it'll happen right away. You know, I
just have a feeling like he's if he is able
to play, he's still going to play some on the
regular tour and maybe a major or two out on

(19:02):
the Champions Tour. But yeah, we'll we'll get in his
ear and see if he see if he wants to
come for sure. But I'm just hoping one year that
he can make it here. You know, I don't.

Speaker 8 (19:14):
Yeah, I'm not.

Speaker 7 (19:15):
I'm trying to be realistic and not expect him to
be here every year, but it'd be nice to get
him here one year.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
I got one quick story that I'd like to pass
along involving Steve, and he did us a big favor
one time. Remember when we had Jack Nicholas on the air.
You can guess who set that up. Yeah, I thought so,
So I kiddingly kind of suggested down the road that
maybe there's one more. And I got to know before
I even got the question out, and he goes, there's

(19:42):
very few favors that you would get from a man
like that. It's not going to be this one.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
So Tiger's not going to look to be on Talking
Golf from the premiere episode of twenty twenty six.

Speaker 7 (19:54):
Yeah, well probably not, but you never know.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
Never sounds like the doors slightly open.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
I wouldn't hold my breath on Steve.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
We always appreciate the time we get to spend with
you all the best to you on your continued recovery
and health and to your family, and appreciate you being
with us.

Speaker 7 (20:14):
All right, guys, thank you, have a good rest of
the show.

Speaker 4 (20:17):
Take care of Steve.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
That is Steve Stricker joining us. A lot a lot
of good stuff there. And Dennis before we go to
break about the golf course. So they're gonna play to
Beth Page Black. I don't know that that's a course
that you've been.

Speaker 6 (20:27):
At, bet you had watched them play.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Thoughts on playing at that golf course and the advantages
that a home course can be for Team USA against that.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
They need to cheat, just like he's talking about the
need to wide enough the fairways and lower the up.
Biggest thing I had there was watching forget what his
name was, one of the foreign players on the tenth hole.
Mario was paired with him. The Mario was playing in
the opening and from the tee to the green is
about to the fairways about two hundred and fifty yard carry, yeah,

(21:00):
and there's a path and this guy stood there and
he says, man, are they making these fairways ever narrow?
Give you an idea how tough it is? I mean,
it's long, and elevated and got all this stuff, and
I think it's going to be a hard place, but
we have to we have to prepare. Of course, that's right,
because when you play over there, they cheat until we've

(21:23):
got to make sure that things get the right way here.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
I want to ask Dennis one too.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
You're in it.

Speaker 4 (21:28):
You're one of the assistant captains or for Kegan Bradley,
and you're on his staffs breaking news and uh, he
calls the meeting together and he says to you, should
I play or should I not? What do you tell him?

Speaker 5 (21:42):
Are you kidding? Get the hell out of the way.
Let somebody else play. You can't do both. That's a
big job. What happens if he gets beat in one
of the matches? Yeah, that's what you have to look at.
He's got his job, should be the final. If it
wasn't for Steve Uh what's her name? Boys, Yeah, he
would never You know, Steve was the one who picked

(22:03):
them up from off the wall someplace.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
And don't you think that's what Steve was.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
Steve's gonna politically correctly answer that question. That's what he
was saying. Are you going to be a player or
a captain? No Ques and if he wanted to be
a player, I think he should have. We talked about
this earlier this year. He should have relinquished.

Speaker 5 (22:21):
He's trying to be political, you know, me know is
the answer correct? I mean, get the hell out of
the way and do your job like you're supposed to.
The big key is pick good assistance because you will
not be able to communicate with all those various personalities.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
Correct.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
And in Steve's case, he picked those people, Freddie Couples,
all those guys who you know, were admired and all
sort of stuff, and they zeroed in on those players.
So each one of those players damn near had a coach. Yeah,
and that's what they need there, really good stuff. Yeah,
you know, I mean, I the course is unbelievable. I
don't you know. He should be the captain, not the player.

(22:58):
And he's having a good year. But there are some
people out there that are just as good and should
be there and probably get more of the bizazz.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
You know what I would have loved to have seen, honestly,
And I'll talk to Gary Dematto about this. I wish
that Kegan would have relinquished and said I want to play,
and that would have been interesting, and I hope that
I get selected to play and because that's a different
experience too. But we'll visit a little bit on that
with Gary Demotol. The State Open is going on at
Black Golf Run the River and Meadows courses there. They

(23:28):
started that today. Gary will visit with us about that
and other things when we come back. This is talking
golf at TPC Wisconsin.

Speaker 9 (23:35):

Why drive an ordinary car when for the same monthly

Speaker 10 (26:36):
Your game, your store always at the best price.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Oh what fun stuff. We get a chance to continue
on with talking golf at TP.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
Marcel breaks are better.

Speaker 4 (26:55):
Uh we get some great show material during the break. Yeah,
most of it. We could use some of it.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
We could, There's no doubt about that.

Speaker 4 (27:04):
No.

Speaker 3 (27:04):
Garry Demato joins us from sconsin dot Golf and we
were just talking about the State Open which is underway
now at the black Wolf Run. The Meadow and River
courses both being used there. Gary give us a sense
of what this week is like in the State Open,
and then we'll maybe let Dennis tell a story that

(27:25):
he can talk about on the air about his times.

Speaker 8 (27:29):
Yeah, well we had a three hour an de lay here.
But I just think they're going to get most of
the golf in today. Leader in the clubhouse is Cameron Huss,
who went in the State Open two years ago at
Century World and has two other top three finishes. So
Cameron shot five hundred and sixty seven on the Metal
Valley's course, which is playing probably a stroke or two

(27:51):
easier than the River of course. And so you know,
the players will switch. Guys who play Metal Valleys today
will play River tomorrow. Then we'll have a cut in
the thirty six Old finale on Wednesday. But I'll tell
you what, that River course. Both courses are playing tough,
but that River course is just oh man, that course
is brutal. The rough it's like US Open rough. You
absolutely have to hit it straight on that golf course.

Speaker 3 (28:15):
Yeah, this is I mean, what a what a fun week.
And it doesn't end the golf season in Wisconsin, but
this is kind of the culmination of what you would
have as in state majors. And Cameron HUSS's he's had
some success and obviously he's got the clubhouse lead today.
What is it about him that will give him a
shot to win it when the week wraps up.

Speaker 8 (28:37):
Well, he's, you know, got a ton of experience this year.
He's he told me, he's tried to Monday qualify at
seventeen events this year. He's gotten in a few, He's
played in some Corntrary Tour stuff, He's played in some
PGA Tour America stuff, and I mean he's just a
good player. I mean, you know, every time you tease
it up he has in a state level event, certainly
he has a chance to win. I was looking at

(28:59):
the State Open has been played at Blackwell Front nine times,
and of those nine guys who won here, including Steve Stricker,
eight of the nine have at least played on the
Corton Ferry Tour. So you can't fake it here. Every
player who's won here is going to really. Mark Wilson
won here, Steve won here, Dan Boltman won here, four

(29:22):
time champion, So this place is going to produce a
good champion for sure.

Speaker 3 (29:27):
Dennis the pride of I mean, that's it's like the US.
So we talked about the championships to win on the
major tour, but in state this is the tournament to
win that and maybe the State amateur stayed open.

Speaker 5 (29:41):
Yeah it is, you know, I mean it's supposedly the
best players and you know in the state at least,
doesn't necessarily mean the best in the nation.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
But yeah, some.

Speaker 5 (29:49):
Of those top five players can compete anywhere and that.

Speaker 4 (29:54):
River course.

Speaker 5 (29:54):
Yeah, it's really hard. And I'll tell you what's really
hard about it. You mentioned the rough and stuff, but
the green are really hard. Long time ago, when I
was with the PG president PG, we wanted to and
you know, Herb and I were good friends. You know,
we did a lot of anyway, we wanted thinking about
taking the GMO up to up there, and had Ernie

(30:17):
and a couple other guys go up there. And when
they got done, they said they wouldn't do it because
the greens were too severe.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Too undulating, and there's so real yea.

Speaker 6 (30:26):
So they said they're too much.

Speaker 5 (30:27):
So I told Herb that, you know, you know, I mean, well,
I tell you what we'll do, then we'll build eighteen
new greens.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
That was his comment, that you will build it.

Speaker 6 (30:36):
It will be eighteen new greens, you know.

Speaker 5 (30:37):
But you know, time went on and moving it over
to probably around there. You know, it was a good thing,
and there are no fences there, you know, and whenever
you have a fence around the place means you're not welcome.

Speaker 6 (30:52):
And that was you.

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Know, so you know, it was good and the people
that and they did a good job and it still
is a good course for a turn may be a
good senior, of course.

Speaker 13 (31:02):
You know.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
Gary Demodel joins us and a couple of things.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
One we just had Steve on I don't know how
much you heard of our conversation with Steve, but I
can paraphrase a little bit that he is very upbeat
about where he sits now post surgery and about his
ability to be back in and playing the game, and
that's just good for golf, good for all of us
who like to follow him playing golf as well.

Speaker 8 (31:27):
Oh absolutely, I heard the tail end of his interview
and taught or text it back and forth with Mario
a few days ago about Steve and Steve and Mario said,
he's really positive and upbeat. So good to hear that.
I'm so glad that surgery appears to have been a
big success. And yeah, it's good for golf in our state.

(31:47):
I mean, he's got such a huge fan base in
the state. Anytime the stricer family. As we say at
Wisconsin doct Golf is good for business for us because
anytime we write about Nicki or Izzy or Bobby or
Steve or Mario, I mean our page, he's.

Speaker 4 (32:05):
You forgot one other one.

Speaker 8 (32:06):
Lots of stuff about those guys.

Speaker 6 (32:08):
Whatever.

Speaker 4 (32:09):
Gary, two arms went up in the room. You're like,
what am I chop liver? Or what?

Speaker 8 (32:15):
Tell you what we've given Dennis's due over the years?

Speaker 13 (32:21):
Too?

Speaker 3 (32:22):
Oh yeah, I think so he's a We were just
talking in the break. Dennis is a former State Open
champion and uh eleven time runner up or six six
times six time runner up.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Hey, it's not easy finishing second.

Speaker 5 (32:35):
Well, I true won away. I gave one away to
one of my assistants. Steven's point was nice of you.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
Yeah, how many Larry went between the two of he
won one or two, Marios won a couple.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
Yeah, you got a bunch in the family.

Speaker 5 (32:47):
Huh yeah, you know one of those things.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Yeah, keep it in the family.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
We were also talking Gary about the decision that awaits
Kegan Bradley next Wednesday. Uh, he's got to fill out
his rosters with six more players. There are six that
are automatic qualifiers. Therein Scheffler spawns sohftly English, Henley and
Deshambo and then he'll fill out the roster. He's one

(33:13):
of those guys in consideration. And I want to throw
this idea by you. I felt all along that if
he wanted to play, he should have removed himself from
being the captain and just tried to be a player.
Do you think that there's a chance that he chooses
himself as a captain's pick?

Speaker 8 (33:31):
No? And I heard Dennis's answer and he nailed it,
because can you imagine you choose yourself from you go
out and you lose a couple of matches. I mean,
the media is just going to be just on him
relentlessly about that. Sure, even though it might have been
it might have been a good choice. I mean, he
might have been the best guy to pick, might have
been best to pick himself. But if you lose matches,

(33:52):
you set yourself up for all that criticism. Well, and
if you really why I have to play, he should
have stepped aside. You know, yeah, a long time ago,
and it's too late now.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
If you pick yourself and you have somebody sitting out
while you're playing in a four ball match, and you lose. Now,
how do you say to the guy who didn't play
while you're playing and you lost.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
I mean, I just find it to be.

Speaker 5 (34:15):
Either you're a general or you're the soldier soldiers, and
if you want to go out to be.

Speaker 6 (34:18):
A soldier, you can't be the general. Yeah, one of
the two.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
How difficult are the picks as you look at it,
Gary that remain and you know Steve was talking about
rookies that are out there and getting some veterns. How
significant are these choices that will be made in the
next nine days.

Speaker 8 (34:38):
Well, I'm a little worried about this team. I I
don't think it's going to be a stronger team as
we had, certainly listening straights a few years back. You know,
you look at Patrick Cantley's fifteenth in the points, Xanders
Soflee missed the Tour Championship. He's had some good finishes
in the majors, but he hasn't really won anything and
finished forty second Athetex Cup points. You know spif he's

(35:02):
not going to pick speed, he's thirty second in the points.
You know, Morikawa, justin Thomas, I don't think they've played
their best golf so I'm a little worried about who's
going to round out this team, and I think you're right.
I think there might be a name or two on
the team, you know, Ben Griffin or I'm Maverick mcneey,
somebody like that, who are high in the points, who

(35:23):
don't have Ryder Cup experience. So there's a little bit
to worry about. Thankfully, it's at Beth Page, which is
going to be a great equalizer. I think with the
fans support, there's.

Speaker 5 (35:33):
Some good players that are on that list. Nobody even
knew about Scotti Scheffler correct. He took on the number
one player in the country and beat him four and three.
There are so many better players today. Look at the
scores they're shooting. I don't even know their names. Twenty
three under, twenty four under. Some of these guys, and

(35:53):
you mentioned some of them struggling with their game. We
criticize it before. Now they have a whole bunch of
money and they have families and that's their motivation. And
I don't blame them. My family would come before that job,
there's no question about it. But there's better players out
there today. There's some phenomenal players on that corn ferry tour.

Speaker 6 (36:15):
Sure, and they have the drive to do it.

Speaker 5 (36:19):
And the other part is is that if he picks
the right people for assistant coaches, assistant captain, vice captains,
and they start to go ahead and use that stuff
to move this guy along. You can imagine Freddy Couples
picking one of these people and teaching them about this
and about that. How much better they're going to be

(36:39):
and long term would be better.

Speaker 4 (36:41):
Anyway, are we down to where we're going to say
goodbye to Gary? Is that pretty close? Before we leave Gary,
I want to know one thing, where's he going? Well,
if you've got more questions.

Speaker 5 (36:51):
No, I got nothing, you know, I'm just I'm just
so happy to have him on the air.

Speaker 4 (36:56):
You know, since Tess has given you that tip, are
you ready for the River Us?

Speaker 8 (37:00):
No, not by a long shot. But I'm working on it.
Believe me. That's a that movie you taught me. I'm
working on it all winter. I'm gonna be a different
gol for next year.

Speaker 5 (37:10):
Well, I will have to have your back indoors here. Yeah,
teach you a little bit more because I can't tell
you everything.

Speaker 6 (37:15):
Then you'll never come back. Yeah, right, that's right.

Speaker 5 (37:21):
And we got to You gotta judge who you're giving
it to, their ability to remember, you know, keep those
But he has some possibilities. Yeah, I hate to tell
him when he's on the air, but he's got some possibilities.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
That's fantastic.

Speaker 4 (37:35):
Not probability, not.

Speaker 3 (37:40):
Probable, Gary Demano, we appreciate the whole full season of
you being well. It's a it's a great joy for
you to say yes, and we appreciate every week we
get a chance to visit with you and uh and
we wish you a great off season. Our paths will

time with us.

Speaker 4 (37:56):

Speaker 3 (37:57):

We're just talking golf at TPC Wisconsin On Mike Keller
Paul bround Dennis to the gunning.

Speaker 4 (41:38):
Dave mccannon's all right, can you tell it's our last
show of the years.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
Yeah, a little little light spirited.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
A little less formal of what's going on.

Speaker 3 (41:47):
You've got something you want to tell us about, Paul,
that's going on here.

Speaker 4 (41:50):
This was given to me by the staff here. But
Dennis could talk about this limited time offer. Play now
and pay later. This is a membership you can join today,
full golf membership with no golf dues until April first
of twenty twenty six. Plus you can enjoy the pool,
the racketball sports, the golf range, heat it an outside

(42:12):
short game practice area and athletic performance center, grab a
meal and the Champions grill or the players participate in
a number of events and meet some new people. Now,
there's specifics on the offer, and we suggest you call
here to get all of the details on this. But Dennis,
this is something special you're offering to try and get

(42:33):
a few more members.

Speaker 5 (42:34):
Oh, we've got a little over one thousand requests for
information on membership. And my point to this sales staff was, well,
you know it's now towards the end of the year.
I'll tell you what some of these people are going
to tell you, and they agreed, Well, we think we'll
wait till next year or whatever I'd like to get
it filled up. We've got a limited number of spots
to go to fill it up, and so we made

(42:56):
this offering. You pay the initiation fee right join as
a lifestyle member, so now you remember, okay, one hundred
and fifty bucks a month, whatever it is, but you
don't pay any dues until April first, and be able
to have your member so they would be able to
use the facility, play golf rest of August, all of September,

(43:17):
all of October, and for those who want to play
in November, we got about ten days in November. So
we think it's a good offering for people who are
on the fence. There are some that are contemplating because
the remember someplace else and there's a waiting list and
I can't play for whatever length of time, and would

(43:38):
help them go ahead to make a decision that they'd
like to come here.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
Tis.

Speaker 3 (43:43):
We were talking about the State Open with Gary Demanto
when he was on and you won your State Open
at North Hills. North Hills, Yeah, what can you tell
us about that way back the tournament or how I.

Speaker 2 (43:55):
Played well about you you know, it.

Speaker 5 (43:58):
Was really it was great. I was going along and
there was a lot of good competition, which there is now,
and I was in good shape until the eighteenth hole
and hit it out of bounds. Throw the fair way
out of bounds, irritating, didn't go to eat, didn't go nothing,
went right over to hit balls. So now we've got

(44:18):
to get into the last round. And I shot sixty
seven or seventy in the last round and won the tournament.
I don't have a couple of shots by that time,
but it was it was a very difficult. It was
a good course. It was it was easy hard, you know,
one of those type. But the fact remains is that,

(44:41):
you know, I was able to go ahead to maintain
a level of some kind of consistency for that last round.

Speaker 6 (44:49):
But it was pretty good.

Speaker 5 (44:51):
I'll started out making a couple of two or three
birdies in a row right out of the shoot.

Speaker 6 (44:54):
So it was fun. It was fun.

Speaker 5 (44:58):
There's some that was a good win, but there was
six other times that I finished second. You know, different
players and players who played good, but uh, the one
that stands out is the one at Steven's point. I
had a couple of s. I had a shot lead
I think, with three holes to play, and had a
young assistant, Rick Rasmussen, and he went ahead and uh

(45:20):
he made a power or made a birdie or I
made a bogey. He winds up winging the State Open.

Speaker 2 (45:25):
Were you paired with him?

Speaker 6 (45:27):
Yes? He was in your Yeah, yeah, I think I was.
I remember we.

Speaker 5 (45:32):
That was one that I was. I got sticks out.
I hated to lose, but then it had a happy
ending because here he was involved here and went on to,
you know, play really good golf and continues to do so.
So it was really good.

Speaker 4 (45:46):
A couple of quick things in terms of your game.
Just curious, what did you do a lot of people
have first tea jitters and that kind of thing. What
did you do in those kinds of situations? Did you
have a routine that you used or anything like that.
You know, That's why I'm asking this question.

Speaker 6 (46:04):
So you're so I really don't.

Speaker 4 (46:07):
I don't.

Speaker 5 (46:08):
I really don't get afraid of anything. You know what
I'm saying. Look at the other way where where I
grew up. You don't get afraid to fight. And so
that was my That's the way I grew up. I mean,
I don't know what it means to be afraid. You know,
people talk about where you go when you're hunting and
stuff like that. Aren't you worried about this? I worried
about what I've got a gun.

Speaker 2 (46:30):
I worried about that nervousness that Paul's talking about. For
the rest of us to deal with it?

Speaker 4 (46:36):
How do you do it?

Speaker 5 (46:38):
Well, you know there's a guy, Arnold Palmer, you know
that name, Yeah, yeah, And I spent a lot of
time with him in his office and outside, and you know,
he had a lot of interesting things, as I did
with Ben Hogan and smart enough. I was just trying
to pull something. His idea was this. He believed that
everything around him had energy, whether it was a bird

(47:00):
or whatever. Everything energy, And what he would do is
stare at that and he would pull all the energy
from that thing and bring it inside and then he
was able to withstand and that's where he got his energy.
But he's understand that pressure, but he he believed there
was energy all over the place that was him doing it.
And Hogan the same way. You know, when you talk
to him, I go around with him. I said, what

(47:21):
are you.

Speaker 6 (47:21):
Doing over there?

Speaker 5 (47:22):
He's in the rough? Oh no, I said, That's why
I go to because I'm always in the fairway. But
if I you know, if I'm in the rough, I
want to practice coming out of the rough. Totally different
than with some other people. And he was dead serious
about this energy thing.

Speaker 4 (47:35):
By the way, another legend made an interesting comment in
the last week or so. Gary player Oh yeah, said
Jordan Speed had the ability to be the best player ever,
except he was doing something that you've talked about for
a long time. And he said, that's what took it away.

Speaker 5 (47:56):
From That's why you can't play with your left hand
upside down. It's not in a position, and he suffers
from that and he doesn't know what to do and
he chicken wings the quick going left. I mean, I've
told you this, you know, sitting in the bar a
hundred times. It's you know, if he didn't put everything
in from twenty feet, he wouldn't want anything.

Speaker 4 (48:13):
He said, as far as practice, dedication and that at all. All,
that's absolutely had it all.

Speaker 5 (48:20):
That's all. That's good. You got a couple other guys.
Tell me that guy's name, big tall guy plays on
a on the on the on the Live Tour dust
Dustin Johnson upside down with them, loop the loops. You
know where you're going with that. You don't hear about
him no more? Yeah, you can't play in those posi.
You know, the game of golf and the positions for
golf haven't changed.

Speaker 6 (48:41):
Now.

Speaker 5 (48:42):
What's happened though, that these players who play upside down,
they line up to the left. They had a big slice.
Are you kidding me? A slice?

Speaker 2 (48:51):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (48:51):
The best players in the world go right to left.

Speaker 3 (48:53):
I got one more thought before we take a break,
and we still have the time for on the on
the other side. But Scottie Scheffler, and I'm not trying
to do this to get you upset, because I've got
a way to I got a way to make this
make sense. Scotty Scheffler won three point six million dollars
over the weekend. His earnings this year are twenty point
three million dollars. By the way, the best starting quarterback

(49:14):
in the NFL is making about forty million, and he's
got a whole team around him. He doesn't do everything
the best basketball players on some of these NBA teams,
there's a eighth guy, third guy off the bench, making
twice what Scotty Scheffler is making. Scotty Scheffler earns that money,
that twenty point three million dollars this year. He earns
it by himself with a team around him. But nobody

(49:35):
has hit a shot for him.

Speaker 5 (49:36):
But wait, but wait, he can make twenty million for
twenty years. He can make forty million for two years
or three years. Yeah, all he has to do is
get hurt. It's over. Oh sure, yeah, So, I mean
that's a lot of money. You'd like to be a
caddy out there, and caddies are those can't make any money.

Speaker 4 (49:52):
He's made over ninety million since he started playing.

Speaker 6 (49:55):
That's pretty good, pretty good. No money today, I mean.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
It's all relative is nothing.

Speaker 6 (50:01):
And after you get them, after you get that much money,
what do you what.

Speaker 4 (50:04):
Are you going to do?

Speaker 3 (50:05):
He still has found a way to stay competitive. So
obviously with him, it's not just about the money, because
he's still winning any needed.

Speaker 5 (50:14):
He's twenty seven years old, right, twenty eight, Yeah, he's
twenty eight years old. Just think about it. Yeah, thirty
eight doing all right, forty eight for twenty years making
that kind of money.

Speaker 2 (50:23):
Come there you go. So we're just talking golf and

This has been another great year. I want to thank
both of you for letting me be part of it.
I love doing it and getting the visit with Steve
and Gary on a regular basis and being out here
and talking about the tournament as we did, you know,
for the first bunch of shows before the MFAM Championship
was here. I look at the calendar and see that
it's on the August eighteenth, So there's a lot of
golf left. No, it's our final show of the year,

(54:24):
but it has already been a tremendous year here Dennis
Dizziani at TPC, not only just for the members, but
also with the tournament and so many other great things
that are happening.

Speaker 5 (54:33):
Well, the big item was for the member, and that
was I was you know, we were very much interested
in the tournament, very much interested in Children's Hospital and
all those times. But it was the member who really
tripped my trigger to go ahead to continue to talking
about what happens after twenty seven. You know that, you
know our remember it, liked it, and they enjoyed it,

(54:57):
and all good things and good things came from it.
So looking forward to the next six years or so
far six years, especially if that what's his name again,
if he comes to one that one, can.

Speaker 4 (55:11):
You imagine what have be like if he came here.

Speaker 5 (55:14):
Well, I know that fam is making it, making plans
now for him to commit. They're also making plans if
he commits and doesn't show, and it's it's real what's
going on, And hopefully they'll be there, and I'm sure
Steve will have a lot to do with it. He's
a good friend. Steve supported him when he had all

(55:35):
the trouble, so I know that he confides and Stevie
talks him about a lot of stuff, So you know
it'd be nice to have him here, but you'd probably
need a helicopter to get in here.

Speaker 4 (55:45):
Maybe And quickly, Mike, I'll put together the package for Gary,
you and I to we'll go three for a million
bucks for next year to do the show.

Speaker 2 (55:53):
Well, yeah, that's that's good, all three.

Speaker 5 (55:56):
Why won't he a million? That just goes to show
you guys are cheap cheap?
