Talking Golf at TPC Wisconsin is onthe air. Far Talking Golf is brought
to you by American Family Insurance,TPC Wisconsin, Oak Park Place, Wild
Rock Golf Club, Simbrick, MercedesBenz of Madison, also University Ridge Golf
Course, Ridge Top Exteriors, ClearyBuilding Corp. And Nevada Bobbs. Now

(00:27):
from the new home of TPC Wisconsinin Madison, here are the hosts of
Talking Golf. Member of the WisconsinGolf Hall of Fame, the legendary Dennis
Tizziani, longtime Madison sportscaster Paul Brown, and Wisconsin sports veteran and statewide radio
host Mike Callander. And we getunderway on this Monday, the day after

(00:51):
Father's Day and the day after thefinish of the US Open at TPC Wisconsin
here in Madison. I'm Mike Heller, Dennis Tazziani, Paul Brown with me
Dave mc kay in taking care ofthe engineering. We talk about the US
Open. It wrapped up yesterday afternoon. It was dramatic golf. The back
half of the afternoon was just youcouldn't take your eyes off it. If
you're like me, I couldn't leaveit Bryson to Shambeau winning the US Open

(01:15):
and Rory McElroy coming up a shotshort of his first major title in more
than a decade. And tis everybody'sgoing to talk about the putts on sixteen
and the putt on eighteen, Butlet's first talk about the guy that won
it because the up and down fromthe bunker and a guy who didn't hit

(01:36):
a fairway on the backside, hemissed more fairwords than anybody else in the
field yesterday. Bryson de Shambeau. He also made the shots that won the
tournament more than talking about the twoputts that lost the tournament. Bryson his
play down the stretch, well, you know, he played great, But
here we go again. You knowthe golf course dictated those who hit the

(01:59):
ball far. Yeah, not somuch off the tee, but who hit
the ball far with the two hundredand ten yards seven iron? Come on,
who does that? But you seewith that he can get the launch
and he can get the spin twohundred and ten yards. The average person
that's going to hit you know,a long iron or wood there, well,

(02:19):
it isn't going to hold that green. Like I said it sixty two
one hundred yard green sixty two onehundred square foot greens, but only three
thousand you can play on because it'slike playing on the hood of your car.
I think it's a terrible place.I played there twice in the Yeah,
I think it's a terrible place. We talked about the USGA and the
setup on the course last Monday. We talked about it and I thought it,

(02:45):
you know, on Thursday and Friday, it was a little different by
the time he got to the weekend. There's no balls holding the green.
We're just watching all these irons goin, get up there on the middle
and then float off the side andinto some waste bunker area. And that
is part of what they do prettyroutinely in the US Open. Well,

(03:05):
it's that same deal where I justdon't know if USGA WP, whether they
have something against pros, what thehell's going on? Why are you making
it so that the pro you know, what's the difference that? Do people
really want to watch that? Ofcourse, this was pretty good. It
was pretty good, but you know, I was hoping Cantilee would win.

(03:30):
You know, we have a USAplayer and a tour player. I looked
over here and I have a foreigner. Yeah, and then I look over
here, I have a PGA American, but he belongs to live. So,
you know, I was betwixting between. Now that's me. How many
people thought about that? I know, I knew you're rooting interest. Yeah,

(03:53):
that's pretty clear. Cant would havebeen good. And the one thing
on Deshambo he said that the shotout of the sand was the best shot
he's ever hit in his entire career. Yeah. And with US is Steve
Stricker. Steve, how did yousee the US Open? What's your reaction
to what happened over the weekend.Uh? Yeah, we we tuned in

(04:15):
the last three or four holes andit was it was fun to watch it.
Yeah, it's his point, youknow. I mean I thought of
the same thing. I you know, I like Bryson. I sent him
a message congratulating him and and uhhe responded, And I mean, he's

(04:35):
a wonderful guy. He was onour team at Whistling Straights for the Ryder
Cup and he he's really a goodguy. And I don't hold it against
him that he went to live. But you know, Patrick would have been
a good story too. You know, his buddy Xander just won the PGA
Championship in May, so it kindof spurred him on, I think probably

(04:58):
to you know, do what hedid this last week. So yeah,
it's it was. It was greatto see, it was it was fun
to watch, and you know,Pinehurst looked extremely difficult five how about that?
Yeah, yeah, Steve from afrom from from a player's standpoint,
When you see the conditions that theyplayed in on those turtleback greens, what's

(05:24):
the player's reaction. I don't knowif you were envious or you just would
rather not play that even in yourprime. What's your view of that?
Yeah? I played there a coupleopens, and you know, there were
greens that were nearly impossible to hit, you know, just to keep the
ball on there. I didn't spinthe ball enough really coming in with long

(05:46):
irons. It's a frustrating place forsure. After a while you just don't
know where you're supposed to hit it, and you know, you you try
to hit it in the area iswhere if it does go off the green,
then you have an opportunity to getup and down. I think,
so that you know, starts toplay in on your mind too, and

(06:10):
you know, probably leads to sometentative swings. You know, you watched
a couple of guys coming in orearly in the week, you know,
and it just looked like they weretrying to hit it on the center of
the green and some of the holes. So it's it's a tough place.
And then they grew you know, the the the native areas up right,
yeah, right up close to thefairway, so that made it even tougher.
So but you know, six hunderdthat was that was a good winning

(06:33):
score. I think, you know, guys under par you know, and
you when you look at the listof guys who were up there, they
were all big hitters, all longhitters, and that's where the game's at.
You know, you got to bombitout there. And like I said,
five hundred and forty yard part four, I was thinking, well,
shoot, if I even if it'sfirm, you know, you're kind of
coming in there with you know, two twenty five or to forty, you

(06:56):
know, so it's uh. Imade the comment that yes, it's long,
but I'm watching these guys two tena seven iron, you know stuff
like that. Yeah, you knowthat's the deal there. Hit that's iron
so far, got a chance tohands the chance to hold it. Well,
that was not my favorite, notmy favorite winner. You've heard this

(07:20):
before, Steve Mark Kalkovecia, andhe said, I'm open for the criticism,
and he's he won in eighty nine, he won thirteen events on the
tour. He said, Pinehurst numbertwo is the most overrated golf course in
the world. There's no out ofbounds, there's no water, it's almost

(07:41):
impossible to hit a tree. It'spot luck if you miss the fairway.
The difficulty roll offs, the randomnessholding the greens. Players have to rely
on luck if they missed the fairway, Steve, For the average person that
plays golf, we probably don't reallyunderstand how difficult it is to play under
those conditions, right yeah, AndI think to his point, you know,

(08:05):
you missed the fairway and it wasright in that native area and you
could get a lie, a goodlie, or a you know, a
horrible lie. So I guess theguy who hits it in the fairway the
most is obviously going to hit ithave an advantage. But I think Bryson
only hit like four fairways just yesterdayand hit yeah. So what does that

(08:26):
tell you that he either hit itfar enough offline where it was okay,
or he scrambled really well and orgot lucky in the native areas. You
know, that last hole didn't looktoo lucky though. He was up near
a route and under a tree.So I think that did that hit a
marshall to his ball? I couldn'tI couldn't tell, but it yeah,

(08:50):
I think it did. I thinkit did it, yes, yeah,
yeah, And if it would ifit didn't hit the marshal probably have been
up by the bleachers and he wouldhave got a drop and had a great
lie. Yeah, it looked toughfor sure. Steve Rory obviously had a
difficult day. He's trying to winthat next major. He said this on

(09:11):
his social media today, Yesterday wasa tough day, probably the toughest I've
had in seventeen years. Firstly,I'd like to congratulate Bryson, but he
went on to say at the end, I've shown my resilience over and over
again in the last seventeen years, and I will again. I'm going to
take a few weeks away from thegame, process everything and build myself back
up for the defense of the GenesisScottish Open and the Open at Royal Troon.

(09:33):
What he's going through with what happenedyesterday at his finish, none of
us can relate to. But hehas been resilient in staying in contention,
and he feels like he'll win amajor again. Yeah, I mean you
would think he would, right,And that's probably why he feels the pressure
that he does. Everybody feels likehe should win another one or multiple ones.

(09:56):
You know, the talent that hehas, how good he drives the
ball, and obviously the weakness showed, you know, down the stretch.
You know, he he had acouple of putts there, you know,
both under five feet, one wasunder three feet. It looked like and
missed them both, and that whenyou're trying to win, you have to

(10:20):
make those. And you know that'sbeen a bugaboo for him for a little
while now. And the part thatjust blows me away is he continues to
put with that putter. And youknow, I mean once you at some
point say, you know what,I missed a five footer and a three

(10:41):
footer down the stretch and what amI doing? You know, I should
maybe change it up. But yeah, that's the part that's holding them back,
I think. But yeah, he'sgot so much talent and obviously feels
the pressure to perform in the majorsand try to win another one, and
that's it's getting in his way.Speaking of majors, got a week off
and then you got a chance toplay in another one. What's your agenda

(11:05):
and and what's your plan Steve thenext couple of weeks and what frame of
mind are you in in terms ofwhere you're at. Yeah, I've got
I leave for the US Senior Openon Monday. Is the graduation party Sunday
nights, so we've we've got thatto look forward to, yep. And

(11:28):
then and then out to play theUS Senior Open at Newport Country Club next
next week, and uh, andthen I think a week off and then
another major, the Senior champions SeniorPlayers Championship. Uh down a Firestone,
which is a really good fun spotto go. So yeah, be busy

(11:48):
the on and off a little bit, and then uh yeah, try to
get ready. Speaking of putts,I need to. I'll probably be switching
a putter too, And I makegot a couple of the mail yesterday bye,
by the way, so they seesomething different in my hands, Steve.

(12:09):
When you go out to new part. Have you played there before?
I assume you have at some pointin time. Yes, I have not,
no looking forward to it. Here, it's here, it's wonderful.
So yeah, I got to getout there early enough to get you know,
get around it a couple of timesprobably and see it and uh yeah,
but I hear it's a it's agreat place. Yeah. That That

(12:31):
leads me to the question, then, when you haven't been someplace, what
is important for you to learn? As you go around in a couple of
practice rounds, what are you lookingfor? What's important for you? Yeah,
it's hard to understand the whole youknow, dynamics of a golf course
in just two rounds, you know, I mean you can get a pretty
good feel, but it depends howhard it is and how tricky it is.

(12:52):
You know, if it's straightforward, then you know, two rounds plenty.
But I have a feeling that's oldstyle golf course has been around for
a long time, so it's oldschool stuff and it may be a little
bit different, but I'll see howit is and hopefully get around there at

(13:13):
least one and a half times, you know, eighteen holes and another nine
if I don't feel comfortable enough,I'll do it again and get around there,
you know, two full times, but kind of just got to wait
and see see how it is,see how comfortable I am with some of
the shots and kind of the linesto take off the t's and all that

(13:33):
kind of stuff. Steve, onefinal question that we're going to let you
go. Chatted with Billy Andreid herewhen at the AMFAM tournament. He said
TPC is awesome. Apparently Justin Leonardsaid it's going to be a challenge and
it's a very good golf course.Just curious from the people that came in
contact with you that were here, maybe caddies or players, what was the

(13:56):
initial reaction to TPC. Did youget any Yeah, yeah, from a
few players. They some Mark Hensbyloved it. He came up to me
and he's like, that's that isone cool piece of golf course. So
he thought it was super cool. The consensus is you have to drive it
straight. We all know that andyou know, but for the most part

(14:20):
it was very positive from the guysthat have played it. That's great.
Yeah, really good Steve, Thanksfor joining us, Good luck next week
and we appreciate you all. Right, thanks guys. Good look ye yeah,
Steve Stricker who is the designer outhere, and well I hadn't heard
that before about driving it straight outhere. That's news to me. Really,

(14:43):
you have to do that here.Yeah, we have to check the
water level height every yeah morning, because so many balls. No, but
you know, here's what is fromthose number two's, number one is too
long, you know, combination thecourse is made and it's wide. From
those teas you move up into thethrees and fours, it shrinks. That's

(15:09):
where people are getting caught up,you know. And the length of the
course force him the other day camein as a group they found thirty four
golf balls. Well, got toget him backed rights the rule Dennison at
the Rule. If they find him, they're looking for both whatever time,
because that's a rental situation. Nowwe're going to get them back on the

(18:51):
Paul Brown, Dennis Dizzy on theHall of Famer, and we welcome in
Gary Dematto from Wisconsin dot Golf andthe president of the National Golf Riders Association
of America, you'd have enjoyed thebreak where Dennis was given Paul Brown a
putting lesson on the table. Here, I'm trying to get his hand to
be square to the line and staysquare. Yeah, it was very if

(19:12):
we only have that left hander lefthand, Gary, let me begin by
talking about the runner up yesterday atthe US Open. Today on his social
media, Rory McElroy says, asI reflect on my week, I'll rerew
a few things over the course ofthe tournament, mostly the two miss putts

(19:33):
on sixteen and eighteen, But hesays, I'll always try to look at
the positives. I've been resilient throughoutmy career. I think that I am
closer to winning my next major championshipthan ever before. He's part of the
story. Obviously, Deshamba wins itshould be the story, and I think
he is, but Rory is theother part of the story. What's your
view on how that finished for RoryMcElroy. He did not visit with the

(19:56):
media afterwards either. I watched itvery painful. I felt really bad for
him. I think Bryson's you know, a couple of years ago, I
wouldn't say he would be a greatchampion. But now I've done a complete
reversal on Bryson. I think he'swon the fans over. I mean he
was he was a kind of ahated guy a couple of years ago,

(20:17):
and it's just amazing that he's beenable to win over the fans the way
he has. But but as forRory, you just feel bad for the
guy, and you know, thereare things rattling around in his head.
Now ten years without a major,it's not going to get easier. And
I think, you know, theseare some scars that are going to probably
you know, I don't know ifhe can shake these kind of scars.

(20:38):
You know, obviously one of thetop tier foremost talented guys in the world,
but this one I got to believehas really, really, really hurt
the deep inside for him. It'sgoing to cause some problems. I think,
Hey, guys, I don't knowif you'd all agree with this,
But obviously on the post with Chambleeand the other four and people that the

(21:00):
analysis, Dennis ask you this. They were talking about what Gary just mentioned
that he hasn't won now since twentyfourteen, and they said one of the
main reasons he has not one isthe swing is not as good as it
has been in the past. They'retalking about the swing is deeper, and

(21:23):
he's crossing the line more and hisiron play isn't anywhere near as effective as
it's been in the past. Doesany of that make sense to you?
If he would have made those twopuffs, what would they say? Yeah?
Yeah, yeah. He's always hadthe swing where he goes up and
he drops it down on the plane. He drops it with his arms down

(21:45):
him. It's the same. He'shit more faraways than anybody he has.
I don't get it. Some ofthose guys on TV shouldn't either. Here
we go, I'll just tell youwhat they're so critical. And I know
Brandle, I know of him.He played, you know when Steve played,
and he's got a great sense ofhistory and stuff like that. But

(22:06):
a little bit less yacking and morewatching on the TV would be a lot
better. I mean, you know, you're criticizing Rory McElroy and you've never
won a tournament. What are youdoing now? You know he's done this
and he's done that. I thinkthat anytime you get a guy that's twenty

(22:30):
five to thirty five years old, that's worth about seven billion dollars that that
takes over what's going on. Sure, I'm just telling you a lot of
money goes to their head. Somepeople who made a lot of money quit
the tour knowing this was going tohappen and went off and bought a ranch
someplace. You know. I'm wemade this. You know, it's you

(22:52):
know, there's other people that Iknow that made a lot of money really
quick. And I suggested maybe totake all that money and maybe row out
into Mendota and burn it. Andwhen you get back, I'm just telling
you you're going to have a wholedifferent idea of what this is all about.
But back on, you get asource, not a sore spot.
But there's people on that TV thathaven't won anything yet. They're meeting very

(23:17):
critical of what's there, and Iknow what they're doing. I mean,
they're you know, making it.And back on another thing you mentioned about
this guy brand Gary, I'm takingall his time. That's okay. He
doesn't about Brandle about uh, BrandalChambley being a for the fans. Tell

(23:37):
me one player, one player,Just give me one that waves to the
crowd, smiles to the crowd, asks them to go ahead. To be
killing class to go ahead and doall this sort of stuff. Tell me
one person who does that on thetour today. Yeah, there isn't anybody.
So people are relating to the factthat it's no different than their girl,

(24:00):
Caitlyn Clark. I mean she's goodwith the fan because she's relating to
the fans. Which player out ofall those people that you come down the
line, which one does that,Well Bryson does, Now that's the one.
But he just said he's a favoriteof the fans. Well, yeah,
he's with it. And the otherguy he's not there anymore, was
Lefty, the other lefty, PhilMickelson. He was a favorite because he

(24:25):
was a favorite. These other guyswalk around like they got a you know,
a button on the air. Yeah, that's right. I mean they're
just walking around glum. They don'twave. I mean does the other boy
that can't Ley did he smiles? He never smiled. I don't think what

(24:45):
is that. I don't know thathe's ever So anyway, go ahead,
Gary. Last last Monday when wevisited, we talked about the us GA.
They're always part of the story. The course set up, the course
is always part of the story. What do you make of Pinehurst number two
in the us GA That up todayagain part of the story again, you
know, I love it. Ilove one week like that where guys have

(25:07):
to have every single part of thegame razor sharp. It's not bomb and
gouge. It's not hit the driveras far as he can and wedge one
up on the green. It's theyhave to think their way through that golf
course. They you know, themargin for air is so small, and
it really I mean, look atthe leaderboard. It identified the best players
in the world. All those guys, almost all of them in the top

(25:29):
ten or twelve or fifteen. Areyou know the guys you would want to
be there. I mean, itwas a great leaderboard. And one more
thing about the money. Dennis isright about the money. But one thing
my wife asked me. You knowwhen Rory Missaid put him finished second,
well, how much money is hegoing to win? And I said,
I guarantee you he never once thoughtabout the money on Sunday. Yeah,
he wanted to win that tournament.Yeah. I think it was just over

(25:52):
three for the winner and one pointthree for second place, something along those
lines. Yeah. Then let mefinish on this. You brought up Deshamba.
I think it's super unique that aplayer has gone from being routinely disliked,
roundly disliked to being roundly adored. That doesn't happen in sport very often.

(26:14):
There's few that I can think of, Mainly maybe they would come from
the tennis world, where early JimmyConnors was disliked and later loved, maybe
to a certain extent, Patrick McEnroethe same way. But I can't think
of somebody that has changed their perceptionat the highest end of sport more so
than Bryson Deshambeau. Maybe Kobe, but Kobe had legal issues that changed the

(26:37):
way people thought about him early andthat changed later in his career. But
isn't it remarkable what Deshambo has doneto change his image? Totally remarkable,
and considering he went to live whereyou'd think he'd be reviled even more,
you know, by a lot ofpeople. But I think he's matured a
lot. You know, he cameout, you know a few years ago,
and you know it's said stuff likeAugusta National as a parts sixty seven

(27:00):
course for me, and I meanjust said stuff like that that Now I
think when he looks back. Hewishes he wouldn't said that stuff, but
he was young, he was immature. I think he's grown up a lot.
I think it's amazing that he's gottenthe fans on his side. But
you know, two years ago theywere calling him Brooksy and you know,
and just about he was ready tostorm off the course. And now they're

(27:21):
chanting USA and loving them. Itis. It's a remarkable turnaround. And
the calendar now really shortens from amajor's we're three quarters of the way through.
You get truoned in the Open Championshipnext month. And I'm going to
go back to a question I've askedyou a few times. Do you like
the change of the calendar where themajor season ends in July? I love

(27:42):
it. I think it's great thatthere's a major tournament, you know,
basically every month from from April on, you know, the Masters, the
Players Championship, and then the othermajors. I think there's a great rhythm
to this schedule now where you're notwaiting two months between majors, and you
know, half the summer goes by. You know, there's one after another,
just a few weeks apart. Ithink guys can prepare themselves better that

(28:04):
way than having a lot of timebetween majors. And I think, you
know, you get farther away fromfrom football, you know, by moving
the PGA Championship back to May andmoving everything earlier. I think that that
helps a great deal too. Ithink it's a great schedule now from the
major, he's just a major standpoint. Yeah, you have one final one
and then we're going to let yougo. How would you interpret the comment

(28:27):
of Tiger Woods who said, I'mnot going to play until the Open and
after that I have no idea whatI'm going to play again. How do
you interpret that? Well? Iinterpreted that he's coming to the realization that,
you know, it's going to behard, super super hard for him
to win again. Every time hewent into a funk or went into a

(28:48):
slump, or changed his swing orgot hurt or did something off the course,
every time, I was the onewho said he's going to win again.
He's going to win again. Andhe you know, he proved us
all right who thought that by winningthe Masters in twenty nineteen. But now
I just I don't think he's evergoing to win again until he gets to
the champions Tour, and I thinkhe'll win there in a cart three rounds,

(29:11):
you know, on shorter courses. But I just don't see him winning
again on the PGA Tour. Ihate to say that, but you just

I'm talking online, Mike Helt.Travis Becker is the director of Instruction
at TPC Wisconsin and joins us weeklyto talk about lesson programs and the learning
teaching of the game elements. Andso today we're going to start on a

(33:39):
new student. Now, a newstudent can be multiple things. It can
be somebody who's just beginning the game, or it could be somebody who has
been playing the game for a longtime but hasn't taken lessons from you or
new to the teaching process. Sohow would they vary or are they the
same when you get a new studentinto the mix when they're talking about playing

(34:00):
the game. We bring in anyone, whether you're experienced player or a beginner
player. We're gonna start kind ofwith our same system with our new student
assessment worksheet. We go through weget some of the basic information physical limitations,
what are your current handicap at,what's your average score, what does
your goal score look like? Whatis your most common ballflight, what are

(34:22):
your most common misses. Then wedo a little self assessment as well,
where we have them grade their owngame one to five, and we go
through the different aspects. We didthis last year, you and I did,
and I hadn't taken lessons in along time. I'd had tis look
at things or whatever I think therewere times when maybe you looked at something,
But last year we did this andit's really interesting when you go through

(34:45):
that assessment, your self assessment, and then how it matches up because once
you start to do things after theself assessment, what happens next. So
the next thing we're gonna do iswe're gonna we're gonna take some video of
the player. We're also going touse some technology in the new student assessment.
We like to use track Man,which we brought in today. We

(35:06):
brought in your numbers what we gothrough, but we have the student hit
several shots with their seven iron andthen seven shots with their driver, and
it's more for us the instructors totake a look at the ball flight of
really what's going on with the data. We can see it, but we
want to know some things as faras how is it launching, how is
it spinning, what's the club doing, is it's the path going a certain

(35:27):
way? Is the face angle doingsomething? How are you attacking the golf
ball? And we can write thesedown and make our own goals based on
what the student says. If Mikecomes to me and says, I want
to improve my driver, it's allover the place. We're really going to
look at what his path and whathis face are doing. Those are the
two laws that influence that direction, and then we can set goals. Typically
we might have a path that's outsidethree degrees going to the left, are

(35:51):
going to the right, or wemight have a face angle doing the same
thing, and then we can asthe instructor, our job is to keep
it simple and pick out one ortwo easy things in the setup that we
can fix that's going to help improvethat. How often does the self assessment
match up to the swing analysis? Is it usually pretty close? Does it
vary? It's usually pretty close. It is so people are honest at some

(36:15):
point. People are honest. Somepeople when I say five is as good
as it gets and ones poor. Some people are fours and fives all the
way through, but they can't breaka hundred, so they view themselves at
a very high level. There's otherguys that are one handicaps that grade themselves
one in twos in areas, sopeople are a little more hard on themselves.
They're easier on themselves. But wecan usually determine what they think their

(36:36):
strengths are in their game and whattheir weaknesses are So once you get club
head speed and ball speed and carryand launch angle and all those things,
what do you do from there? That is into the lesson program. So
if we just take a look atyour numbers with your driver here. Okay,
so your clubhea speed is one hundredand three miles per hour, it's

(36:57):
above average, that's pretty good.Your ball speed is one hundred and forty
miles an hour. The difference betweenthose two numbers is called your smash factor.
Okay, the best anyone can dois one point five. You can
see you're at one point four totwo. So there's a little bit of
room where we could pick up maybefour to five more miles an hour,
which would equate to maybe fifteen moreyards on your drive. And we have

(37:20):
to look at it. Is itbecause of something that's going on in the
swing path or the club face?More than likely it's you're not hitting the
sweet spot? Okay, so whatis causing that? Are you coming out
of posture? Are you changing yourradius of the swing on the way down?
But those would be things that wewould look at. This was a
pretty good drive that you had.It was right down the middle. You
hit it two hundred and sixty nineyards. Okay, I look at how

(37:42):
the ball left the ground at sixteendegrees. That's called the launch angle,
kind of the first one third partof the flight. And then your backspin
was twenty two hundred revolutions per minute, which is a great spin rate.
Usually the windows somewhere between two andtwenty five hundred. So overall, what
the ball did on that shot wasreally good. Then I go down and
I look at what is the clubdoing. Your club path was zero degrees,

(38:06):
so the perfect good. Yeah, your club face was point eight degrees
open again, very good face topath point eight. You hit up on
the ball two degrees with the driver. That's exactly what we're looking for.
This would be a swing that wewould want to repeat. Yeah, me
too. So next week when wetalk about this, we're going to talk
about what we do with this,as we begin to talk about what to

(38:30):
practice. But when you get thatinitial assessment, then as the player learns
from that, what will they takeand how much is involved? And we're
going to get to in the secondversion of this a week from now,
but what can the player then dowith the information that you've taken out from
track man. It's as we useit as a starting point. It's a

(38:51):
benchmark. So once we go throughthat data and we look at the swing
together, we're going to go throughand look at the fundamentals. We're going
to look at the grip. We'regoing to look at the pasture of the
ball position. Usually we'll try tofind one or two pre swing items that
we can improve on, and thenwe'll take a look at the swing.
And our job as that the instructoragain is to diagnose where can we get

(39:15):
the biggest bang for our dollar andkeep it simple. So it might be
something usually we start with the backswing. Yeah, we look at the swinging
motion, the arms and the club. Some people more of a beginner,
it might be the body motion, just getting them to make an athletic motion
from their trail side to their frontside. So we try to really simplify
it at the end of the firstnew student assessment. But the students should

(39:37):
leave with maybe one or two preswing things they got to do for homework,
and one or two in swing things. I'm going to leave with this
this week and then we'll dovetail aweek from now. But when players of
all different calibers, some say I'mnot good enough to take a lesson.
Some beginners say, well, letme hit a little bit before it take

(39:58):
a lesson. Others I guess thequestion I'm asking is that what you do
benefits players in all varieties of theirgame. Whether they're just beginning their experience
but just play for fun, orthey're trying to play in a tournament or
an event. You can help allof them. Everyone, everybody that's a
golfer, we can help. Again, if it's your first time and you

(40:21):
want to go out and hit balls, we would rather have you hit balls
in front of us so you don'tstart to develop the bad habits. If
you're an experienced player, it's usuallytweaking. You know, it could even
be something on the mental side ofit where that's thrown off of you're just
not going through your process correctly. And it's a great teaching facility at TPC
Wisconsin, and we know that manyof you understand it's a private club.

lucky. Uh And he's been herefor a long time and I've never listened

thing to do, you know thatfrom the fast pace of hockey and all

the years you did that, andI think in your own right you also
didn't miss the moments. But Mattis extraordinary in that, and he's moved

He also didn't miss those moments.Totally different sport to call. We have
been incredibly fortunate to have him asone of our lead voices of the sport
we pay attention to, you knowelse, it's nice to have a part

(45:30):
of our group. Young lady namedBobby, I know that. Who's with
us on the phone. First ofall, let's catch up with where you
are and what are you up tothis week. I am just outside of
Peoria, Illinois. Yes, inthe Midwest, which is a beautiful saying.

(45:51):
It feels very homey here, butplaying on the Woman's All Pro Tour
this week. We start tomorrow. So so when you were home for the
last uh, well, well youplayed in the in the State Open last
week. When week we talked aboutthat and let's walk back through that,
because what a tremendous experience. Iknow you and I visited a little bit

(46:13):
on it afterwards. Walk us throughthose final two rounds after we visited with
you last Monday. Yeah, II don't I genuinely don't remember my scores.
But each day those last those lasttwo days, I was right in
there. I ended up the lastday, I was a shot back,

(46:34):
played not super well the second dayand genuinely thought I shot myself out of
the tournament, and then got doneand realized that I was going to have
only, you know, a shotbetween me and the girl that was leading
starting the third day, which wasgreat, and I got to play.
I was in the last group,so got to play with those girls that

(46:55):
I was trying to catch and hada talk of fun. I I came
up second and out tied for second, ended up losing by three shots.
The girl that ended up winning,Alis Hovin, She's from North Kcota State
University, played awesome. She reallydidn't miss shot and I didn't put any
pressure on her, so uh itwas hard. She was hard to catch.

(47:19):
I ended up going down the lasthole had it was a par five
reachable, had to eagle it.She ended up to tie her, but
she ended up burdying it anyway. So yeah, beat me by three shots,
but had a ton of far Whatdo you what do you? What
do you learn about yourself as agolfer when you're in the final group of
a tournament that you very much wantto win? Uh? What did you

(47:43):
learn about your game and where youare? Well? I definitely didn't have
my best stuff, and to bein that position still the last day is
obviously really encouraging. I yeah, have placed second in this tournament like the
past three years and have lost tosome really good friends of mine, and

(48:06):
yeah, just I'm ready to kindof I'm ready to win it. But
yeah, you learn, You learnthings that you need to work on,
and have definitely taken that to thisweek. I needed to work at my
driver. I didn't hit a lotof fairways and that sets you up not
super well going into greens. Sobut did really good things, made a

(48:27):
lot of birdies, made a coupleof big numbers that probably cost me in
the end. But yeah, youyou are disappointed for sure, But like
I said, I did a lotof positives and you, yeah, you
learned from it. Bobby, whatdid you learn about your driving? What
were you doing and what did youcorrect and how did you correct it?

(48:47):
Yeah? I so when I practiced, I missed my driver to the right,
and when I get into competition,I feel like it's going to go
to the right. So I nevermiss it to the right. It always
goes to the left. Yeah. This week, I actually nobody's ever looked
at my driver, meaning like ona track man or looking at numbers,

(49:13):
spin rates and all that stuff. So I actually got with Travis one of
the days and I was like, can you just look at my driver on
a track man? Just somebody obviouslythat knows what to look for. And
I explained my feelings to him andhe changed just the setting on my driver
that has worked wonders the past coupledays in practice, and I'm excited to

(49:37):
try it tomorrow. Good. Yeah, I'm Dennis. Let me pull you
in here just for a second. So the track man, do you believe
that it reinforces all of the thingsthat you've seen for all these years?
So those numbers kind of match upto what you saw before they were using
that technology and teaching. I thinkit's a good thing. Yeah, I
think it's all good that they cango ahead and match up the because the

(50:00):
ball is a big item on thesemental clubs. You got to get the
right ball. It's not all justa ball, but you get the right
ball, get the right spin, the right launch angle. I mean,
those are all things in today's mindsetof people we deal with they have to
have. You know, people don'twant to be sold. They just want

(50:21):
information and they make up their ownmind. And that's what this does.
It makes me when I'm teaching,I look at you know, I look
at shape, I look at trajectory, and I look at path. I
mean, if the shape and trajectoryyou are off, you go right to
their hands right. If the pathis bad. It's the relationship with your
shoulders to the line at impact, governed by your footwork. You know,

(50:45):
well, mine is different than somebodystanding. Okay, let's use the same
Let's match up this club to yourbad swing. Sure, yeah, yeah,
right, And I'm saying no,no, no, no, let's
get fundamentally correct. And doesn't makeany difference. If you've got a broom
in her hand, yeah it's goingto be okay. You know. So
there's a you know, old styleguy the new style guy, and like

(51:07):
in her particular case, fundamentally she'sshe's right, why is the why is
it going like that? Well,it's the club been normally it's not the
arrow Man, you know it's butit's a club that's better. And all
of a sudden, boy, shegets in the way we go. So
it's a good thing, Bobby. You're trying to call it a new path,

(51:28):
so to speak, to try andget to the LPGA tour. You're
on the absent tour. Now you'reon a tour that on a coastorm stand
apparently is behind. What are youfinding so far on that tour? What's
your impressions of it? Run sowell? I have really enjoyed my time
out here. The girls are awesome, the one that we compete against or

(51:51):
that I compete against, and thenthe staff is just so great these tournaments.
So this week we're in Illinois andthen next week also in Illinois,
and these two this week are brandnew to the tour, so it is
kind of cool to come. There'sa good chunk of us that are from
the Midwest, and a lot ofthese are played in like the Texas area,
so it's super cool that they're venturingup north, and especially in the

(52:14):
summertime because it can get so hotin Texas. But the competition is really,
really, really good. You haveto be on your a game,
obviously, and there are four daytournaments, which we don't normally get.
Even the EPSTON Tour are usually threeday tournaments, so these are four days
cut after two, and they rewardwealth. You also are playing for EPSTON

(52:38):
Tour exemptions or for the tournaments ofthe Epston Tour that are following the WAPT
tournament that you're playing, so that'skind of cool. There's an incentive to
play well, and then they rewardfive girls at the end of the season.
The top five girls go straight toStage two of Q School, which

(53:00):
is a huge deal. It reallymeans that you get full EPs in to
our status for the next year.So they do a great job and I'm
really happy that there are just opportunitieslike this for us. Bobby, want
to wish you the best of theluck as you pursue your dream there.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
