Talking Golf at TPC Wisconsin is onthe air for Talking Golf is brought to
you by American Family Insurance, TPCWisconsin, Oak Park Place, Wild Rock
Golf Club, Simbrick, Mercedes Benzof Madison, also University Ridge Golf Course,
(00:22):
Ridge Top Exteriors, Cleary Building Corp. And Nevada Bobbs. Now from
the new home of TPC Wisconsin inMadison, here are the hosts of Talking
Golf. Member of the Wisconsin GolfHall of Fame, the legendary Dennis Tizziani,
longtime Madison sportscaster Paul Brown, andWisconsin sports veteran and state wife radio
(00:45):
host Mike Callander. Well, wewelcome you to TPC Wisconsin and Madison.
On Mike. That's Dennis in amiddle, Paul on the other side.
We'll be joined in a little bitby Gary Demato and will begin in Newport,
Rhode Island, where this morning,as we were alive on a Monday
night, they wrapped up the USSenior Open, the final major, the
(01:07):
British Open on the senior side isstill to come final of the Champions Tour
major events, and Richard Bland shota four hunderd par sixty six in the
final round and then one after theaggregate two hole playoff, they went two
more before they wrapped it up andhe beat Hiroyuki Fujita on the extra holes.
(01:30):
And you know, I understand,Dennis, you were only rooting for
one guy because the guy who wantedas a Briton, the guy who finished
second was from Japan. So youwe had a rooting interest in the guy
that lives up the road, didn'twe? Well, he just didn't.
He didn't put well, but that'sokay. It'd be better. He'll get
going on all yeah, the restof this season. So I wanted to
(01:53):
ask you about last week I askedabout the longer putter, Steve change putter
grip. Now I'm not talking aboutbut you can relate this to Steve.
A lot of players have gone andare interested in the change of the grip,
more comfortable, bigger grip, thesquare grip, whatever that might be.
What's your feel And I know thatyou think it's the person more than
(02:15):
the equipment at times, but what'syour feel on those who like the idea
of changing that equipment or that gripon their putter. Well, you know
you understand the feel is in yourhands. Yeah, if I tell you
to take something out of your pocket, you'd reach in your pocket for you
probably it's your right hand. IfI tell you to take a coin,
you'd go like this. So thisis where your feel is. Okay.
(02:38):
Now, the wider that your handsare, the less they're gonna work.
They're going to be. That's whythey do that long putter. So now
I look at that and I say, well, what are you doing.
You're taking the feel out of theputt right now. When I grew up
and when I was out on thetour, it was the other way around.
It was very narrow and very riskyright well at times well because of
(03:00):
the because of the speed of thegreens. But as we got on it
was faster. And then what wedid is got you know, we put
two clothes. We took close hangers, you know, it took the close
part put it down. The sidesof your thumb can fit flat on the
deal here. But it was thin. Those guys were pretty good putters,
you know. Uh, this businessshare with the white and the long and
(03:23):
all that sort of stuff. Youknow, I mean, what are you
telling me that you have other problemsfor putting? Yeah, I mean,
are you yipping? I mean, those are all legitimate questions to do it,
but you know, somewhere along theline that's a that's a gimmick in
my opinion. Well, and youtalk about taking the feel out right,
(03:44):
and you're talking about right hand feelfor right handed, for Paul left handed,
that is the same conversation can behad for the claw grip that reverse
with the right hand goes where youdon't really use the wrist and take some
of that. The putter head shouldfeel, the putter head should lead to
the left, just like your golfswing. I'm not advocating that you flip
it, but I'm saying you putthe putter on square, you do not
(04:08):
hit it. Yeah, never hiton square and then to follow through.
So I watch these guys with thesebig grips and stuff, they hit and
then they hold. Is that youknow you're kind of holding that line.
You have to feed the line. But you know, then again there's some
people that but pretty good doing that. Sure, so that but I think
(04:31):
that you know, putting is awill. Putting is more mental anyway than
anything. And but I have neverbeen an advocate advocate of the long putter
nor the one with the big griponly because I'm telling you I know where
my field where, right, Dennis, how about reversing your hands? Well
that that will you reverse it?Then your left hand low Again, it's
(04:53):
somewhere where you wouldn't flip. Thisis what they're going ahead. And I'm
saying, well, if you weretrained not to hit the ball, then
it's not going to flip. Youput it on square right, so it's
more of a shoulder move until yougo to the left. Then it becomes
hands to the left. Now youwatch some of these people, somebody missing
them short butts, you know, six to eight feet. Well I watched
(05:16):
their putter on the way back andthe blade is open to the line.
See what I'm saying, Yeah, okay, what are you going to do
from here? Of when it's twentyfeet away? Boop? You can close
it and you get what happens whenyou're getting close and you can't do this
because this is going to put rollon the ball. Right. So I'm
curious about the industry then, becausethe industry that lives on equipment sales,
(05:40):
new grips, new putters, newdrivers, new three woods, new irons,
new wedges. So how often arewe missing the boat here on the
idea of training a better swing asopposed to training more expensive repurchased equipment.
I think that there's I think there'steachers out there, but I don't think
there's a lot of teachers. Ithink they're teaching personal preference, and I
(06:03):
think that they're doing it for themoney. I think that's happening. Uh,
And I get all of that, you know, because a guy this
is what works for him, soit should work for everybody. It's not
really difficult. A circle is roundand a line is straight. You can't
have that hasn't That hasn't changed atall. And this business back on putting?
(06:25):
Am I taking too much time? No, you're going You're fine this
business with putting. You know, you believe you can't have an opinion on
a fact, right, So wouldn'tyou say that the longer the blade can
stay square to the line towards theball, the more accurate shall be?
Yes? Oh, do you believethat shoulders make the plane? Yes,
(06:48):
they're all easy answers, by theway, I know that, But we
believe shoulders make a plane. Doyou believe every puts a straight put only
the ground makes a go crook it. So I've got to find the point
that I can put the ball. How far can I put it straight before
the ground turns the ball? Okay? Now, knowing that I've got to
get by toe line on the linethat I'm putting, not to start to
(07:11):
the hole on the line that I'mputting my toe line, because when that
gets square, my knees square,my hips square. Oh the big item,
my shoulders are square. And Iasked you, do you believe the
shoulders make the plane? Yes?Do you believe the plane is the line?
Well, I'm gonna say yes toall your questions. Well, my
point is that shouldn't your shoulders workon the on the line? Rock the
(07:33):
baby? Right? When I seethese guys going over like this and I
see these shoulders, Oh you're done. You see what I'm saying. Now,
you've got to come back. That'snot the deal. It's this way
here. So there are some principles, not teach your preference fundamentals, and
then you can get the ball. And there's a number of drills that we
do for people. You know,we put the putter right behind the ball.
(07:55):
Now, all I want you todo now is I want you to
roll the ball. I want youto move the putter head to the left.
Yeah, total different role. Now, when you do that, you'll
notice that the ball leaves the toe, you know, because you know you're
you're rolling it, you'll roll outto the toe that's released. But then
there's certain sports to do the samething, drag the toe. That's a
(08:16):
hockey term. Well watch what theydo this way here and it goes that
way. Yeah, right, heelfirst, heel to the right, heel
to the left. What do youthink. We haven't talked to him,
and Steve will not be on withus tonight, but you mentioned the rest
of the year. What do youthink the rest of the year looks like
for him? He's really hitting theball good. I mean, that's one
(08:37):
thing. I watched his swings.I got tapes of his that I've been
watching and it's really good. It'sjust a matter of time before he gets
in the mood in order to bethere to play. Yep. And I
think that you know that he's gettingto a point now where he's gonna get
you know, very picky on wherehe plays, but you'll see that,
(09:01):
Oh, before this year is out, you'll see this same thing again.
Here's a guy that's in context contention. He should have won that tournament by
ten shots, right, But ifhe'd a putted good. So that's where
he's got to wiggle down to hispuddy. But he'll figure it out.
Yeah, Now he's a field putter. This stuff that I tell you about
fundamentals and stuff. You know, you know, he's going to do what
(09:22):
he wants to do when he wantsto do it. But I'll tell you,
once he gets going and he getsthat feel don't pretty hard to stop
it. So let me ask you. I've asked Gary Tomato about this.
We've talked about the calendar a coupleof times. I don't know that I've
gotten in your opinion. The calendarchanged from you know, not all that
long ago. That's the We're goingto have the British Open here in a
couple of weeks and then it's done. The President's Cup is in mid September.
(09:46):
From a calendar standpoint. Do youlike that we're done with majors in
July. Well, it's well,it's money, right, It's What's what
I'm telling you. All of thisis governed by the money party. You
know, go later, on inthe year. You're competing with football,
football school and all this. Now'sthe time you're gonna get that from the
(10:07):
golf. They're hot for golf. They're going to watch golf. But are
you watching golf like you did before? I don't know most of the players,
so you're not watching it now.I'm telling you what. They're really
good, and I'm not so surethat the ones that are there, I
have a lot better than what wasthere, right, you know, but
it's just about it. You knowthat uh, that pizazz isn't there.
But let me bring up something theywon't make you happy. The last three
(10:30):
tournaments have been won by live players. Yeah, well, you know those
are good players, you know. They they went ahead. They then went
and took some of the best playersoff, and then some of the players
that were left figure it out.Have you heard of this guy Jordan Speith?
Wh where's he been? You know? And you're a furkey foller and
on on on and on and goesthat. You know. They all just
(10:52):
now have kids. That's a bigpull. They took a choice. They
made a choice. They're going togo with their you know, faith education
go off. Well, they wentwith their family. Good for them,
not that some of these guys didn't, but they went ahead and they took
some of the best players, andthey'll continue to do that. I'm a
firm believer that whoever whoever controls thecheckbook controls this business. They control the
(11:18):
check but just a matter of timebefore that happens. But you know,
I know enough about people that that'sgoing to change. If I had to
do it all over, I woulddo this. I'd start my own tour.
I'd start one PGA tour, goback the way it was. Instead
of PGA tour, they just goPGA too. You'd get a lot and
I'll tell you what, you know, all that money that they're getting that
(11:39):
would go into retirement for PGA professionals, not retirement for guys that are making
millions of dollars. And that's whatI'm concerned about. Can you if you
don't pay the going rate for employees, you're not going to get the best
of careers. I'm not telling youthat the peach members we have, but
(12:01):
you know what, a lot ofcredit card collectors in there, sure a
lot of this, a lot ofthis, lot of that, the independent
part, And you know, Iwish they would start their own tour,
start all over again. You'd geta lot of players. If live can
get people. There are people thatare loyal, sure, and they're going
to go back to this people whoare create. Every one of those players
(12:22):
started at a place where there wasa PGA guy. Yeah, yep,
you know, and we got toget back to that. So get back
to something that's happened and quit thisrunning away one hundred million, eight hundred
million, what is that forever ago? When the previous lifetime I was a
PGA member and then I that gotme into it. His name was Jesse
Weeks at Orgyle Golf Club in Millington, Tennessee. And he was my mentor,
(12:46):
right and but for all those kidsthat came through his program, he
was their teacher, their coach,a second father. And then I want
to talk about Travis Beckrell be onwith us later in a lesson segment.
What you are doing here at TPCWisconsin with the group that teaches, and
it starts with him, but youknow, we know it starts with you
and Larry and the work that youguys put into teaching the game and still
(13:09):
do it. That's its core, that's the core of a golf club here
especially, but not just here,in lots of places. Derek Snarr is
a great teacher, and they understandwhat we're doing with that concept. But
that's where it begins for you,is that you want to teach the game
and grow the game from the instructionside. And that's what TPC Wisconsin is
(13:30):
about too. Well, you see, that's their job. Yeah it isn't.
Oh, I got a lesson, but then I got to run and
put carts out, or I gotto do this or no, no,
no no. That's what they do. And pretty soon you're gonna hear of
that. You know, you knowabout the Golf Foundation, what's going on.
And I go over there every dayand I make a pass through what
those guys are teaching, so Ican hear what they're teaching, give them
(13:52):
a little bit of you know, what I think it is, and get
them back onto some stuff. Butyou're gonna hear pretty soon. We're very
concerned about college golf. We're veryconcerned about what happens at m ATC.
Okay, and you're gonna hear prettysoon how we're going to be involved m
(14:13):
ATC. Condition condition however, andmy question to mister ls is, do
you have a woman's team? Yeah? No, and why not? Why
not? So that's you're going tosee. So what I'm talking about is
a different type of a commitment.You know. It's it's the ham and
egg story. You know what I'msaying. In a ham and egg story,
the chicken is involved, but thepig is committed. You know what
(14:37):
I'm saying. That's do and we'recommitted. And uh, you go over
there and you'll see it, andit's not good. It's also going to
get a better We just met todayon what's going to happen in those four
stalls as it reached the track manand stuff like that. Well, you
know, well, and I addthis, and I'm throwing a compliment at
you, but not for yours. What's his name is going to be Gary?
(15:00):
Gary, He's He might not belistening right now, but I'm pretty
sure he is. You don't sayno, and all I mean by that
if anybody, for those of youwho know Dennis, anytime somebody has asked
you, hey, can you comelook at my swing? I don't know
that you you say no to otherthings, not find your passion and give
it away. See there's what hesaid, find your passion. And why
(15:22):
use I say find your gift? You know, a passion, but find
your gift and give it away whenwe get over there. And then when
they can I pay you can Ido it? Yeah? What is that?
Do you realize I watched this girlthat we get done with. I
look over there and Mom is smiling. Yeah, you can't. You can't
buy that. But that's a differenttype of huh. You know, I
don't. There are guys that arein the business that need the credit card
(15:46):
collect to get the job. Andnow we'll go ahead. So where's the
real problem? Well, I'll goback. Well it's not maybe not necessarily
there, But how about that boardof directors that's running the club that threat
Are they really aware of the factthat this guy is that important? Well,
no, we got to be alittle bit careful what we pay them
and stuff like that. And Iget it. However that's the guy or
(16:07):
girl. Yeah. Well, andthat's the reason I brought that up is
that Paul will ask you and yousay yes. And if I'm over there
and I say, hey, canyou look at my swing? The answer
is yes. And it's part ofwhat TPC Wisconsin does. But it's what
you did and what you're doing andall those guys that are in this a
little selfish motivature. Keep paying yourdues, buddy. Yeah, all that
(16:30):
that's not really true, but thatis the fact is that if I know
they're playing, and they play betterand they keep coming here. But Alan
Mitchell did that when I was workingfor him. If I said, hey,
can you help look at my swing? You would look at it.
Mike Snarr would look at it allthe time. You've always said yes.
I mean that is part of thegrowth of the game and part of the
lesson side of the game, teachingpeople to how to play better. It
(16:52):
isn't that these pros don't know what'sgoing on, but they do. But
the fact is is that they're responsible. They don't have that freedom to do
that. I think of Bob Brew, I think of all those people there.
When is the last time that youheard of a player? I don't
want to be derogatory here, butyou know, A see what I'm saying
(17:14):
right, there's a player. There'sa player, but that's what she's Where
Where has the person in Madison,Wisconsin professional Yeah? Won anything. It's
been a while Well, why I'mlooking for is your ability to play and
your ability to teach. Those arethe two things that separate you from anything.
(17:37):
You can always get somebody to sella shirt or get a tea time,
that's not even a big deal, but playing and teaching. Years ago,
when a pro walked into a placewhere they're having a drinker of beer,
he was the best player at theclub. Wait a while, Yeah,
it's not the case anymore. Butthere are something you know you mentioned
Derek, Thank goodness for somebody likethat. And there's the other boy that's
(18:00):
at Oh he used to be aclub fitter, played at Wisconsin. He
is a club fitter, played itand I forget his name. But another
guy that's got that passion play, and Chuck Henner is his son in law.
Yeah, okay, he said whatI'm saying. I mean, those
are people that are in the again, that's what they do. They don't
(18:21):
want to be stuck getting tee touchesany of what we're doing. One of
those guys who talks about and writesabout it, Gary Demotto, will join
us on the other side. We'lltalk about this. The US Senior opened
and he was down to the rayFisher over the last couple of days,
so we'll get an update on what'sgoing on in the state of Wisconsin golf.
Gary Demotto will join us on theother side as we continue talking golf

is joining us now. Gary isinvolved with Wisconsin dot Golf and Gary one
of the big events every summer isthe Ray Fisher Tournament. So let's start
our conversation there and give us arecap of the recent event. Yeah,
(22:21):
the Ray Fisher concluded Sunday, thirtysix fold Finale Wisconsin Public Links Associations Signature
Events, seventy two h Amateur Championship. I think probably you put it in
terms of prestige, you know, behind the state opening State Amateur, and
that would be you know, thethird one always gets a great feel and
it's always a shootout because james VilleRiverside is pretty short for all these young
(22:45):
bombers and they make tons of birdies, really good finish. For the third
time in four years it went toa playoff and at Dustin Schwab went the
playoff over Wisconsin player Jacob Bickman. On the first etch to Vpe. They
both shot twenty under for seventy twoholes, which is pretty dang good.
And the other thing about the finalround is the Schmidkey brothers. Mason,
(23:06):
who goes to Marquette and his olderbrother, Max, who goes to South
Dakota, combined for eighteen birdies andan eagle in the final round and shot
sixty two and sixty four. Sosome pretty good scoring out there. I
saw your posted interview with the twobrothers and they had some fun and they
were paying attention to each other's scoresbecause they weren't in the same group,
(23:27):
right, Yeah, that's right. So you know Blue Golf, they get
the scores on their phones, andso Mason called up his brother scores and
saw that he started that Max startedhis round with seven straight birdies, which
doesn't happen too often on any levelanywhere. And so Mason said, I
had to put my foot to themetal, to the pedal to try to
(23:48):
keep up with them. And Masonplayed a great back nine. He pulled
out I think a nine iron shoton apart four and then chipped in on
the next toll and just you know, both brothers, but just went crazy.
Was fun. Yeah, where didthey go to school? Want it?
Marquette wanted South? Yeah, youdon't ever mention? No, you
(24:11):
know where did that tournament start? The Ray Fisher? Yeah where did that
start? It started a yerokee, didn't it. Yeah, that's right,
long time ago. I just happened, is he still Yeah? I just
happened to get a text from aguy. You remember him, Dave lond
know that name, Daven, Ido it? Used to be on our
show and he says, I rememberbeing on a show. We were talking
(24:32):
about Mo Norman and my winning thefirst seventy to old tournament at Cherokee,
beating Steve Caravella on the eighth holeof sudden death. Is that right?
So you know there's some history thereand big time there. But it went
from here, from here down tothere. I don't think we could get
the idea of them making eighteen totwenty birdies playing here not here, you
(24:56):
know, I don't think. Idon't think that would happen. But but
good for them, just go toshow you what's out there. I was
telling you about the young great playsunbelievable how good they are. And uh,
and we have but we have tohave a they have to have a
place to go. You know, where am I going from here? Yeah?
And that part isn't that part issomething that well they bothered you that
(25:18):
the one went to Marquette, Sowhat that's exactly right. I saw that
too. Yeah, Gary, let'stalk about the US Senior Open, which
also wrapped up today out Rhode Island, and Steve just couldn't putt it like
he has putted otherwise he likely winsthat tournament. But that's not how it
happened. Uh. So the ChampionsTour, the US Senior Open went to
(25:41):
another day and uh and Richard Blandfrom Great Britain, it's your champion.
What'd you see? Yeah? Iwas, you know, I read some
stuff on the on the internet aboutSteve Switch and cutters, but it was
it was kind of shocking, youknow when I when I tuned in to
the telecast and saw the putter,he was wheeling. I've never seen anything
quite like that in the hands before. You know, he obviously put it,
(26:03):
you know, pretty good in thefirst three rounds to you know,
three sixty six is but so it'dbe interesting to see where he goes from
here with the putter. Have youguys had him on the show today.
I'm sorry, I haven't been listening. Well, they came back today,
so we left him alone off ofthat round this morning and then the flight
back. But Dennis, I'll haveyou because we didn't address that out of
(26:25):
the open. He did. Heswitched to that different putter and a different
grip over the last week or tendays. It's always been his forte.
Obviously, he felt like for nowthat would serve him better. We putted
with it here. Obviously, thisis not the first time he putt it.
It was phenomenal how many putts hemade and how good it was putting
here. Yeah, what happened outthere because it's a different, different system
(26:51):
there in your system. The otherthing is the putter's heavier. There was
a putter a long time ago thatPing made. He used to make a
ping. A lot of people puttedgreat with that putter because it left the
putter and went hard. You know, most people missing putts. It's short.
(27:11):
Yeah. We did a survey ofsure short puts. One hundred percent
of short butts don't go in.Really, Yeah, but you know,
if your numbers never change, youget that, you get that ball rolling
a little bit better and get moreaggressive to the whole you make putts.
And that was this. That wasthat putter there, it's still you know,
still pretty good. They changed theinsert from the metal down to a
(27:32):
thing. But but ah, Iwas really impressed with the way he putted
with that putter. Yeah, phenomenal, especially from that eight to ten foot
range. Was really good. Soyou fully expect him to stay with it.
Yeah, you know, there's uh, you know, it's not the
arrow. You know, I tellyou heard one hundred times. You know,
it's still him about it. Andwhether or not there was one hundred
(27:52):
percent commitment mentally to what's going onis another story. And he's gonna face
that as time goes on. He'sfifty six now, you know, sixties
not far away. You know, what's the motivation as we go on?
You know that type of deal.Does he have the same thing for winning
those tournaments? Those are all thingsthat he's going to have to decipher as
(28:15):
part of his program. But he'sgot another life, you know, Oh
gosh, yeah, I was thinkingabout this earlier today. It's got another
life. It's beautiful. We havea lot of fun between hunting and between
doing this and that fishing pretty soon, So there's a whole thing. He
deserves every bit of that. Iwas with him obviously from the start and
know how hard he worked and allthe stuff and the sleeplessness, and there's
(28:37):
nothing else to get to where he'sat and he made it. What else
should this guy win? There's nothingto prove to anybody, yeah, point
other than to himself. Sure, that's the difference. And sooner or later
we'll come back down to that againand we'll see. You know, I
told you this before. His historyis in his future, and it was,
and I'm just telling you that historyis going to continue. And I
(29:00):
think beyond the age of sixty sure, And then I think, Gary,
let me bring it back into this. You talked about the young brothers at
the Ray Fisher, Well, they'rein their early twenties. I would assume
this is the one sport, theone sport, because I can't think of
another where a career, a competitivecareer can span forty plus years, correct,
(29:22):
and it's hard to maintain the mentalfocus, to have the desire,
the want to. So when yousee and we've talked about this many times.
When you see what Jerry has doneand what Steve is doing at their
age, they've been competing and grindingat this since they were, you know,
teenagers. That's a long run.Yeah, And I think the thing
(29:45):
with Steve is that he's able hasbeen to settlement and to go to to
get away from the game do somethings. Although you know he's around it
a lot with his daughters and withNicky obviously, but I think those other
interests and the things that take hismind off golf, I think that kind
of stuff helps prolong a career becauseyou're not obsessing over every day, over
your golf's thing, over all thatstuff. And so when he gets out
(30:08):
to tournaments, I think he's deepdown inside. I mean, Dennis now
Steve lot better than I do,but I think he still has a big
competitive fire burning. So when hedoes get tournaments, he still wants to
win in the worst way. It'sjust that he can get away from golf
a little bit more. Now.As Dennis said, he's done everything in
the game that you know he cando. So yeah, I see his
(30:30):
career. You know, health, you know, health is a big factor
obviously when a guy gets to thoseguys' ages, but I see him still
going on for three, four orfive more years, kicking his spots and
playing very well. Right, Gary, You've been around the game of golf
a long long time and have seena lot of things. Obviously too long,
too long, he said, youdidn't see this in person. But
(30:53):
how about Frank Benzel Junior over theweekend? Two holes in one on consecutive
holes. That's ind I love thosekind of stories, and they always when
we write stuff like that, especiallywhen someone in the state does something,
you know, with a with aweird hole in one, it gets a
lot of readership because people are fascinatedwith those stories. I remember a couple
(31:17):
of years ago, the late SteveHowe and his wife, Carolyn Barnett Howe
made holes in one down in Floridaon consecutive swings from the same tea using
the same golf club. They bothhit seven iron, and I got to
believe, no husband and wife hasever made holand ones on consecutive swings from
the same tea with the same club, because usually, you know, we're
women will be up at you orwe'll use a different club. So yeah,
(31:41):
I love stories like that, andBen Soo too, back to back
aces that I don't think that's that'sprobably never happened in golf. I don't
think. Well, of course,on the one thousand and one USGA events,
right, it's never happened. Thatwas. And obviously with most of
the course designs there aren't consecutive partthree ease, but to do it in
that way is fantastic. Well,Gary, what's going on next? In
(32:05):
state golf? Never really comes toa close, but the ray Fisher in
the early part of July obviously endof June now gone. What's next?
Well, we've got kind of aslow week here with the holiday. We're
going to be posting a couple oftravel stories I did. I went down
to the Ozarks and Branson, Missouriand playing some golf down there, and
(32:27):
I wrote a story about that trip. And then we've got the Women's State
Amateur next week I think is he'splaying in that, and the week after
that's the State Amateur out at Legendat Meryll Hills. So about a tournament
golf still to go here? Yeah, Well, let's wrap it up with
Gary. Gary, I always appreciatevisiting with you. Thanks for spending some
time with us. Enjoy the holiday, and we'll talk next week. I
(32:51):

(36:05):
at TPC Wisconsin from Madison. I'mPaul Brown along with Travis Becker, director
of Golf Instruction Here at the GolfAcademy at TPC and Traviser's many different areas
within the facility that you use forgolf instruction. So we're going to break
it down a little bit, andyou hear about track Man. What is
(36:27):
track man and what does it do? Sure for those viewers that are watching
live here, we have TrackMan infront of us. It's a little orange
box you may have seen if you'rewatching a the PGA Tour events that sits
behind the players. Yeah. Itactually uses radar technology to measure about thirty
different things that's going on with theball and the club. So, for
(36:49):
example, we use it a lotfor fitting when we want to look at
what the ball flight is doing. It'll tell us ball speed, It'll tell
how the ball is leaving the ground, It'll tell us how much batsman is
being put on the ball or sidespin. It tells us the landing angle,
how the ball is falling out ofthe ground or falling out of the
air, and then it also showsus a dispersion for that player. With
(37:09):
all of that technology and all ofthose results are there some that are more
critical than others depending on the person. Yeah, So if we're doing a
fitting and we're looking at here spinrate, you know, if your club
head speed or your ball speed wesay is one hundred and fifty miles an
hour, greater your club at speedthan would typically be around one hundred miles
(37:29):
an hour. We look at spinis more important if your club at speeds
under a hundred and your ball speed'sunder one fifty, we look more at
launch angle, and in terms ofanalyzing the average player, what advice can
you give them that they should belooked for or does it depend on that
individual? It does depend on thatindividual. Again, we look at ball
(37:50):
flight first and foremost, and thenthe technology is there just to kind of
back up what's going on with theball, and the player can see that
if the ball's launched and too highor too low, or it's spinning too
much to the left or to theright. It also shows us what their
club is doing, so we cantake measurements with their club path and their
face angle and set goals for themand they can actually see when they do
(38:12):
it correctly, what the numbers areand how that relates to the ball flight.
They're looking for. Another one ofthe facilities that is a very important
one of the instruments, and youand I did this one and we won't
talk about the results. But theputting lab, sure, we call it
the SAM. Putt lab stands forSAM stands for Science and Motion, and
that piece of technology actually uses ultrasoundand it measures twenty eight different putting parameters
(38:38):
when you make a stroke. Soit'll take a look a lot like what
track man does in the full swing, it does with the putter. It'll
tell us your path, your face, angle, your skid, your stroke
time, your stroke length. Itkind of gets into every area that you
want to look at. Actually,i'd like to talk a little bit about
the one I did do and youhad the video all of it. I
(39:00):
putted seven balls and all seven ofthem. Basically, I'll let you summarize
what happened with my test of theseven balls. Sure, so we kind
of go through it, and wehave you hit seven putts from roughly ten
to twelve feet, and we stoppedthe first four so you don't see the
result if you're missing to the leftor to the right, because once you
(39:22):
see that, you're going to compensateas a player. But then we take
a look at your path, yourface. You wanted to do it a
little bit to take a look atwhat kind of putter fit your stroke the
best, And what we found wasthe one that your gamer won in your
bag was face balanced and wasn't quitefitting your arc of your stroke and how
you squared up the club face. And we went with a putter that had
(39:43):
a little bit toe of toe hangto it, kind of to flow and
match your stroke. What's interesting isI had an older putter that I haven't
used. It's been in the storeroomat the condo probably for fifteen years.
It's a te line putter. Actuallythat's the one that felt the best to
me. Yeah, so you kindof already knew without seeing the data of
(40:07):
what felt the best. But that'sWe'll have players that bring in four or
five different putters and they see ifthey have one that fits their stroke,
and a lot of times it's onethat they might go back to that said,
yeah, I bought this putter along time ago and it felt really
good, and for some reason theyjust got away from it, and here
that was the best one that fittheir stroke. When you talk about the
face balance, what does that meanto the average person. So when you
(40:29):
balance a putter probably four or fiveinches above where the hozzle of the club
is and balance it on a finger. If the face of the putter stays
straight up to the sky, that'sface balanced. You can get putters that
have twenty five degrees of toe hang. That means the toe will drop about
twenty five degrees to the ground. You can get forty five sixty ninety degree
toe hangs, and it's all thattoe hang is based on how you rotate
(40:52):
the putter face through impact. Soif you have very little rotation, or
maybe if you're a right handed playand you tend to miss to the right,
then you want a face balance putter. If you have more rotation or
you tend to miss to the left, then you may want a little bit
more toe hang in your putter. And what other technology do you have to
(41:13):
analyz swings. We use v onesoftware, which is done with an iPad,
and we can videotape your swing andwe can compare it to tour players,
or we can compare maybe your firstlesson to a third lesson to make
sure you're making the improvements. Again, we do a lot of feel things
with players, but it's always goodfor the player to visually see what we're
(41:35):
talking about. We also use anapp called sports Box AI, which uses
artificial intelligence. It creates an avatarof the player and it measures everything in
three dimensional space, some of thebiomechanics of the swing. It'll tell us
hip turn, shoulder turn, soagain we can create goals based on what
that student's doing. Before we recordedthis segment, you had your cell phone
(42:00):
and you were given me an exampleof all of the stuff that's there in
terms of that sports box. Yes, so it'll show us. It's very
cool. Like you used to haveto have kvest where you'd put sensors all
over your body, and it wouldtake a long time to get into that
and get it set up. Nowyou can take a face on video of
someone in two D and it usesAI and creates this avatar, which again
(42:24):
it'll tell you in degrees what you'returning your shoulders, what you're turning your
pelvis, what your X factor is. It'll also tell us your sequencing of
your swing. It sounds very interestingall of the technology. Is this for
the average person or can anybody usethis or are there specific examples of technology
(42:45):
that should be for certain players.I think in today's world, with everything
is so techy, that this benefitspretty much anyone. The younger clientele really
likes it to see some of thenumbers and see the out of what's going
on. But kind of our formulahere for our Golf Academy learning center,
as we always like to say,we need a PGA professional or someone with
(43:07):
experience. We need to be ableto see ball flight and then we need
technology and that's how we get toour fastest improvements, whether it's through a
club fitting or through the golf swing. And you don't have to be a
member of TPC. You can comein and experience the Golf Academy, can't

We welcome in Bobby Stricker, whowas out Were you house hunting when you
were when you were in Rhode Island. That's a pretty beautiful place there,
isn't it. You find a homemaybe you'd like on the on the ocean
there, you know what, maybe, but we're not going to talk about
it, because no, it is. I've actually never spent a lot of
(47:24):
time out there on the East Coast, and especially in the summertime. I
we all were talking about it.I think this place we were, Newport,
Rhode Island, is it kind ofcrept into our top five places that
we've We've gone some cool places asa family being you know, my dad
playing on the PGA Tour, andthis I think crept into the top five.
(47:45):
It was so fun, pretty neat. Uh. When we talked to
you last week, you said, you know, you weren't out there just
to have fun, although as afamily trip, so that that was first
and foremost. But there was somegolf out there too. I'm always curious
when you come back from one ofthe bobby what'd you glean? What did
you learn from that week? Andit was an extra day earlier today,
(48:06):
what did you pick up this week? Really? I I think, you
know, God, the extra daytoday obviously added a different element to the
whole tournament, you know, andbeing you know, closely, just listening
(48:29):
to my dad, yes even yesterday, like when that rain he knew the
rain was coming and then the raindelay happens, and just like I don't
know, my dad doesn't talk alot, but you know, you can
really like being around him. Youcan pick up on a lot of things.
And just how he handled that adversityyesterday. He wasn't playing his best
(48:52):
right and then all of a sudden, you have to stop. And it's
like, okay, well, I'mhe hasn't talked about it, but you
know, speaking from I mean,I'm a golfer, and like, you
don't want to stop. You're you'rebehind and you're over par. It's the
last thing you want to do isstop. You want to keep going.
You want to catch up to andmake up the ground that you lost.
So you know, it's it's it'sweird. Yesterday was weird. And then
(49:15):
just seeing how he is he cankind of it was very cool, kind
of put that behind him and andbut yeah, this is We had a
family trip and Mario, my uncleMario, and my aunt Kressy also on
this trip, so just to kindof put that behind and then we had
dinner and it was normal, andthen just to kind of listen to how
he was going to take on today, you know, when he was talking
(49:37):
about it last night, knowing thathe needed four birdies. Obviously he didn't
do that this morning. But youknow, he's bummed. But just again,
he doesn't say a lot, butit's cool to watch the whole process,
and I can, I can,I can see what he's thinking,
(49:58):
and that mental side is always reallyreally cool to be up close and learn
from. Yep, Bobby, doyou you know you've been obviously around him
through the whole thing. And youlook at Steve's career and it's it's been
a fabulous career over a long periodof time. When you look at that
(50:19):
and the appreciation and how you feelbeing a golfer and understanding what he's done,
what comes to your mind when youlook at that total picture, then
I'm really blessed to have like afront row seat to it all, I
think is the first thing. Andlike I think, and I've said this
(50:42):
to a few people since starting thiscareer of mine when I graduated, so
that was already three years ago, like I really had an appreciation for what
my dad did, but now it'slike even bigger, and our relationship,
I feel like has grown in areally cool way because I'm able to relate
to him on a certain level thatI really am, not not to the
(51:06):
level that he is, but justI'm I'm able to relate to him,
ask him questions, and yeah, the longevity of his skill and just his
talent is also something that I'm realizingis just really unique. We always call
we always say he's kind of aunicorn because he's just like he does things
(51:30):
that just you can't really understand. And especially now like going through and living
this career, there's some things I'mrealizing that are just like, Wow,
he is really good at his job, but he's a He's just a really
cool person also. So I'm justI'm very blessed to have a frontalc to
(51:52):
at all, even my mom,and my mom is a is a boss,
the boss, the boss. Yeah. Yeah, And now back onto
the golf course, both you andIzzy out working on your game, and
you know, when we visited lastweek, you talked about what next month
is for Q School for you andhow important that is and is he getting
(52:14):
ready to start that collegiate career. So now, I mean, I don't
know if this was the family tripof the summer. There might be more
to come, but there is atransition right back into the game for you
and for Eazy to get ready forwhat college is. Yeah, yeah,
I think we were all talking aboutit. This was the one and only
trip all of us I think canmake. And you're right. My sister
(52:36):
has a full schedule. She wasjust going through it yesterday. Her July
is jam passed with junior tournaments andamateur tournaments and then she starts college and
yeah next month, and then thesame for me. I kind of have
switched that focus to Q school, which is next month. I have a
few more tournaments before that, butyeah, it's back to grinds Molde for
(52:58):
Izzy and I. We we gothome later today and we both hit the
range right away. That is onething that you're having a lot of fun
obviously doing watching Dad and doing otherthings. We sit saw and you know,
eating and all that stuff. Butwe got back to work today and
we're both really pumped to get therest of our summer. Kind of started
(53:21):
the second leg, so Bobby, you were out today and saw ya heading
out to the golf course and thatkind of thing. Is a final question
on tonight's show here, what areyou working on in your game? Where
do you feel you really need toimprove one area or is there a couple
or what's the problem. I think, really I'm playing some really good golf.
(53:42):
I really like what I'm doing rightnow. I'm like the most consistent
I've ever been. So I thinkit's just the short game. I think
I feel like I say that everytime we come on the show. But
the short game, the short gameis always is always an area of focus.
I play a couple holes today andI gotten some fairway bunkers and just
(54:02):
bunkers in general. I know that'san area of focus that I need to
kind of start to dial in thisnext month. But it's really just trying
to keep like the same swing thoughtsand feelings on a loop and keep repeating
those because, like I said,my swing feels really nice, and more
(54:22):
so focused on my mind to makesure that stays okay as I prep for
this huge tournament next month. Bobby, always good to have you on the
show. Thanks for the time.Best of luck, Rolling four. We'll
talk to you next week. Thankyou guys. Bobby Stricker joining us when
we come back. We'll have somefinal thoughts. But Dennis, I wanted
(54:43):
to ask you about Mario because we'vegone through the hole and he finished top
twenty five in the Senior US Openwhen it all wrapped up, So we'll
get to some of that on theother side, or we can do it
now. But Mario had a goodtournament. We didn't talk about him,
but he acquitted himself very well.Well the key us when it came time
to make money. Yeah, hewas in the game. He shot four
(55:04):
under that last round. That's asgood as most anybody shot. So he's
getting every week. He's getting tofeel like he belongs. And I see
the people who he's playing with, and I know he's picking up stuff from
those guys here, so you know, I look for a lot of stuff.
You know, you talk about somethingthat can be in his future.
(55:27):
That and he's going to simmer downa little bit. He's still come from
he didn't make coffee nervous. Yougot to take a break. We'll be
