(00:28):
from the new home of TPC Wisconsinin Madison, here are the hosts of
Talking Golf. Member of the WisconsinGolf Hall of Fame, the legendary Dennis
Tizziani, longtime Madison sportscaster Paul Brown, and Wisconsin sports veteran and state wife
radio host Mike Hallander. That's apretty good crew. We welcome you into
(00:52):
CPC Wisconsin and Talking Golf on aMonday night. I'm Mike. That's Dennis
in the middle, Paul Brown withus, Dave mccanno doing the work,
and we'll talk to Steve here ina couple of minutes. Gary Demotto will
join us later on Traps, Beckerin for a lesson segment, and Bobby
Stricker a little bit later on theshow. This is the final men's major
week of the year, the OpenChampionship at Royal Troon. They just finished
(01:15):
up at the Scottish Open and RobertMcIntyre a scott one Scottish leftst time in
a long time. Oh I forgotabout the left handed stuff. But he
was a scott That was the headline. He's Scottish two and forty eight yard
shot about four feet from the cup. Not bad, huh, not bad?
Yeah. I was curious Dennis, when you when people talk about links
(01:37):
golf. We were playing at theOpen Championship at Royal Troon. How different
it is in what your experience aretalking to others? How that? How
can you relate for golfers playing atrue links course over there? Go to
play maybe one of our worst publiccourses and then you're on a links course.
(02:00):
That's the deal. I mean I'vebeen there a number of times played
and you know they think that that'sgreat. Everything's hard. You know,
there's fifty million bunkers out there. When you get it in the bunker,
you can't get it out. Evenpros can't get it out. There's junk
all over. I mean, nodifferent than here. But you know,
(02:20):
I don't know some of them.I'll tell you though, there are some
good American type courses over there, sure, but some of these other ones
are difficult, and I played wellmost everyone. I still had the scorecards
from them. And when the windblows, it's hard to play. When
I played there, I had anoption to play the big ball or the
(02:42):
little ball. I could hit itinto the wind at the best I could
two hundred yards with a big ball. The little ball like nothing right straight
through, except when you hit itin the rough. The big ball stays
up, but the little ball goesto the bottom. So you know what
talking about? You don't even knowabout? No, I don't, okay,
Well, all the big what's what'sthe big ball two point one eight
(03:06):
inches or something like that? Andthe little ball. There's a smaller ball
that we used to play. Thisis the first I've heard that there were
different sized golf balls. You know, you know I didn't. Is this
is? Is this a commercial breakjoke? I'm going to be told about
what are you guys coming in agolf show? I guess we could ask
Steve if that's well, let melet's bring in Steve Strucker. Maybe we
(03:27):
can get some honesty on the showfor a moment. Uh, Steve,
how are you good? How areyou guys, now what's the Are there
two different sized golf balls or werethere two different sized golf balls or I've
only heard the same story you guysjust heard. Okay, no, there
there was, but I it wasbefore my time. Okay, all right,
(03:53):
good to know. So we justheard Tiss's opinion on the the British
style links courses. What's I don'tknow that you're gonna play over there in
any tournaments at any point anymore.Did you have the same opinion? Did
you like playing those dried, bouncygolf courses different? You know? Yeah,
(04:17):
you know, I I can kindof give and take that end of
the game a little bit. Ienjoyed when I did go over there.
It was the trip I really didn'tcare for all the time, but once
I got there, really, youknow, enjoyed it. It's a total
different style of golf and a totallydifferent style of golf, And yeah,
(04:41):
you have to adapt rather quickly whenyou go over as an American because it's
just so different. You know, the ball goes when it's firm and fast.
I mean, you can hit ironsout there. Two hundred and sixty
seventy eighty ninety yards, you know, downwind and then turn around and you
hit the same iron one hundred andeighty yards, you know. So it
a lot to get used to anddigest in a short period of time.
(05:03):
But it's it's uh, you know, it's the home of golf, so
you you better like it and enjoyit while you're there. Steve, over
the weekend, you went toe totoe with Ernie L's he's a Hall of
famer. You played very well.Uh, that was pretty good competition between
you guys there over the weekend.Yeah, you know, it's I'm not
(05:28):
getting the results that I'm looking for. I you know, I'm not playing
my best, which is frustrating.I'm not really you know, I'm doing
some dumb things lately, just whichcost me the tournaments, you know,
and and yeah, just uh frustratingthat I'm not getting done because I've sure
(05:51):
gotten in position a bunch again thisyear and just not closing the deals.
And it's getting harder because the moreI get in there and not doing it,
you know, it's kind of abecomes a mental thing. So I
got to try to overcome that. And but it's nothing that I haven't experienced
before. And so I'll lean onthings that I've done in the past,
(06:14):
and you know, go to workand whenever that is, I play again.
I'm not sure when I'm going toplay again, but try to get
a win before the year's out.Yeah, it's interesting that you bring it
up that way, to draw onthe experiences that you've had in the past,
because the in hearing you describe thatit's not a physical issue for you.
(06:34):
It's not a swing fix or aputter it is some things that you've
done in Is that a focus area? Like how do you describe that?
Oh, it's a putter issue.Okay, Yeah, and that's affected,
you know, my conference level reallyon the greens, and and that's why
(06:57):
I tried something different a couple ofweeks ago through Senior Open, and that
has some merit to it. AndI just you know, I worked a
lot on my putting this last weekat the tournament, and I decided to
go with my old gamer and it'sjust not feeling very good of late,
(07:18):
so there may be a change again. But I got to find something that
I feel comfortable and I get somefreedom on the greens, because I'm really
not that free. I get onthe greens before I used to get on
the green and just savor the opportunityto make a putt, And now it's
kind of the opposite where I'm youknow, not really enjoying enjoying that part
(07:41):
of it. So I gotta Igotta flip the switch there somehow and make
it where I can go on therewith some confidence. Steve, all of
us who play golf and watching youover the weekend and that kind of thing.
You drove the ball great the wayit's and they were very complimentary the
first three days. Then there thefourth day comes up and you there's a
(08:05):
little bit of a struggle there. How do you deal with that as a
player, and what was going onthere? Can you describe the difference between
what happened the first three days andthen all of a sudden the changes.
Yeah, again it's I'm, youknow, farting around with a driver.
Not totally my driver broke in May, and totally not good with what I
(08:35):
have in my hands yet, SoI put a different one in play this
last week. The first three daysit was okay, I wasn't spending enough,
but it was going fairly straight.Couldn't hardly turn it over, which
kind of bothered me a little bityesterday. I literally I counted it up.
I missed about six fairways, likea step in the rough. Yeah,
(08:56):
and that around there is It's justthat I made triple by my ball
being one foot in the rough becauseit squirted out, hit a branch and
then went in the pine tree.So it just wasn't my day. I
guess it's that's golf. And sothose two things, really, the driver
(09:16):
and the putter, things that I'vebeen really consistent with over the years,
is kind of been a little upand down this this uh this year,
and that's what's cost me, Ithink, Steve, how will you decide
your schedule the remainder of the way, Yeah, you know, I'll probably
play. I don't know. Youknow, there's times where I'm like,
(09:37):
I'm frustrated and I just want toget away. But then I'm like,
Okay, I'm having opportunities to winalmost every week and just not getting it
done. So I'm not the kindof guy who's just going to take my
ball and go home, I don'tthink. So. I determined I'll take
some time off. I've got afew weeks off, and that'll that'll be
(09:58):
good. I'll you know, befired up to work at it again,
and a little fresher attitude. Andyou know, if I get those two
things correct, I'll be I'll befine, and I'll probably play another you
know, three, four, fivemore times before the end of the year.
And like I said, just can'ttry to see if I can't get
(10:22):
a victory a week ago when wedidn't have you on the show last Monday,
but the day before that or thatMonday, they decided Keegan Bradley is
going to be the Ryder Cup captain. I'd like to get your reaction to
that process. It was in Tiger'slap. He could have accepted it,
he didn't. Yeah, and nowMeagan Bradley, So what are you what
are your thoughts? Yeah, Ithink I think it's a pick outside the
(10:46):
box a little bit, but Ithink it's a good pick. You know,
he's young to be a captain. You know, he's thirty eight,
where typically it's been guys in theirupper forties or fifties. So I think,
uh that that's the part that's alittle outside the box as far as
his character and what he's going todo for the team and to be able
(11:07):
to lead the team. I thinkhe'll do a wonderful job. Very passionate
guy. I was a teammate ofhis at Medina and then I was a
vice captain when he played under TomWatson when we were over at I think
Lenn Eagles, I think over theresomewhere, and so he's very passionate.
(11:30):
He'll he'll do a great job,and I'm looking forward to seeing what he
does. And I think the guyswill respond to him. You know,
he's current player out there. Heknows the guys, and you know,
I think the biggest thing is ifhe just stays, you know, true
to himself and and do the thingsthat he believes in, because you get
a lot of people in your ear, you know, with telling telling you
(11:54):
what you should do or shouldn't do. And but just if he knows,
he knows the guys, and justdo what he knows what's best for him
and the team, and he'll doa great job. There are you guys
(12:24):
there still here? Paul was askingyou if maybe you were going to go
catch a couple of sixty inch muskieswhile you're away from that. That way
we'll relax and have a little fun. Right. Oh yeah, I am
heading up to Canada later this week. Yeah, me and a buddy and
it should be it should be alot of fun. Looking forward to that
(12:45):
a lot. Steve. It's alwaysgood to have you on the show.
Thanks for spending some time with us, and we'll look forward to the next
time we get to visit. Thankyou. Here's that Steve is uh,
well, that's good. Where youcatch muskie, Dennis, have you ever
caught musky? Oh? Yeah, but we did it a different way something
(13:07):
you don't know. If the DNRis listening, well, yeah, you
know, they they just respond tothat. Oh it's a mustard jar and
you put it sixty in the mushtardjar and just drop it and they're not
catching it. Bubbles up, gotthe fish, you know. The other
thing is a sport. I getit. It's a what is it a
(13:31):
fish of a ten thousand casts?Correct? Yeah, And he's really good
at it. He's got all theplaces to go and he's out there early
in the morning to do that.I don't know fish and never really never
appear not very patient. Well notfor that. What are you gonna do
with the fish? And then theylet him go. That's the best part,
catch him and they let him go, what is it where I grew
(13:52):
up? You know it's different. You know, if I can remember if
you saw a cardinal or a nightburn or something that shoot him. Yeah,
that was a deal shooting. Well, that's how you grew up.
These people, these miners, youknow. They Yeah, you might want
to turn your phone down. It'severy message you get. You get about
two hundred messages a day. Theykeep on talking about it. Then they
(14:16):
ask me when I'm going to aska question myself. I'm never going to
ask a question. I always SometimesI'll look over and see if he got
one and you don't. Well, you know he's uh, he's got it
right on the money here, youknow that. But he needs some time
off. He had too many thingsgoing and his dad passing was a big
item. Yeah, and uh youknow you you you know, putting is
(14:39):
a will have the will it inthere. You can't hope it in there.
You got a will it in there. Driving it pretty much the same.
I know about the driver that youknow he broke it. It's a
bottom thing. But then again, you know he's in contention every week.
What's wrong with that? I mean, it isn't that he's bad, but
you know, there's a couple ofthings, and it's one of those things.
(15:00):
He's Ernie's on a hot streak, you know, making putts well,
and how does it played pretty good? I think of the weekend of the
Major, and we've got two guysthat live a mile and a half apart,
both finished in the top five, and Mario was in position to be
better. He had one round thatprobably hurt him. But we got three
guys that are right here, youknow, connected here, that were in
(15:20):
the top twenty five and another majorchampionship. You'll be all right, But
you know he's fifty six years old. Now it's a difference. You know,
you're getting onto that sixty deal, and you know, does your body
respawn the same way? You know, our nerves are a little different as
you get older, you know,I mean on and on it goes.
And is that concentration there? Nowthis was a four day event, yeah,
(15:43):
I mean four days playing golf underthat particular deal kind of where's you
out? So yes, there's outthere right well. And Ernie's young on
that standard of the tour. Yeah, and it's taken Ernie a while to
win these are that's his first majoron the champion to her right, Well,
he'll be all he'll be all right, you'll you know, he'll do
(16:04):
fine. He'll work it out. That's his style. It's going to be
his way or no way. He'llwork it out, you know. I
mean I watched a couple of changeof clubs and Jimmy gave him a club,
and he gave the club back toJimmy. He took his club and
hit it over the green, Soyou know, there you go. Some
of that stuff is yeah. Anyway, the state aum is going on.
(16:25):
Gary Tomato is there. He willtalk to us on the other side of
this first commercial break about what's goingon there. A little bit later on,
we'll talk to Travis Becker about theGolf Foundation of Wisconsin. Bobby got
fitted by titlists in California. Yeah. Plus, she's getting ready to play
again, right right, He's doinggood. I watched her hit balls over
here. She's way way away abovewhat she was a month ago. So
(16:48):
she's excited about doing it. She'sgot the right mindset, so we'll see
what happens with her. Yeah, all that coming up. We'll be back

back at along with Dennis Tizziani,Mike Heller, I'm Paul Brown, Gary
Demottowo will be joining us in acouple of minutes. Hey, just one
quick note talking about TPC and oneof its new members, guy that played
about nineteen years in the National HockeyLeague, Joe Pavelski. Good playing up.
(20:32):
The all time leading scorer in theplayoffs for an American player is Joe
Pavelski. And he played in thecelebrity tournament, the American Century Championship out
in Tahoe. He shot He's prettygood golfer. First of the three round
tournament, he shot seventy two. Then he shot sixty eight, and he
(20:55):
shot sixty seven then finished second inthat tournament. Not bad for a hockey
player. They use that Stableford systemtoo, that scoring system, but hey,
they set up the course for playersto make some shots, and he
can play. I mean, he'sa member here. Uh, he's a
I believe he's a plus handicap,might be a plus two, So pretty
(21:18):
good. I was just talking toDavid Leschek when we were walking in and
I've always thought this, when youget around a great athlete and you have
him pick up something else, they'llbe great at that too, there's a
gift, and Joe's got a gift. He's obviously a ridiculous level hockey player,
and he's one of the best golfersyou're going to come across. You're
(21:40):
a plus handicap. You're in thetop half of one percent of golfers on
the planet. You know when youplay at that level, and you've got
a theory about you laugh, that'strue though, you know it. Yeah,
Well, you'll see what his plugdoes when he finishes playing around.
You got a theory though about hockeyplayers why some of them are better golfers
right, Well, you know theydo things with the stick that's very golf
(22:03):
related and some things that you know, I know that people don't talk about
and what happens there's a no youknow, I believe that going through the
ball, you know that you shoulduse the ground to grab your toe in
order to keep the blade square, otherwise it'll flop over on you. Well,
in hockey they have a thing calledgrab the toe, I mean drag
the draged toe. And they draggedthe toe. And I don't know if
(22:26):
he shoots left handed or right handed. I was a left handed shooter,
but even still, when you didit, you know, h on top,
you turn it under you let letthe puck go to the toe,
and we hit it into the curve. That's why the curve is there,
so you can flip it and thenyou get the speed. Well, it's
the same thing here. Who's thewho's the young lady? I told you
what I used to teach. Shewas the All American She was the hockey
(22:51):
player for the US Olympic team.M goaltender. Yeah, yeah, we
did this last year and did thesame exact thing way, you know,
before she started having kids and something. We was working together to get this
right. Until she understood how todrag the toe that's how you do it.
I said, yeh, that's howyou do well. Then everything turned
(23:11):
out. So I have a numberof young players that I teach that our
hockey players, and then what we'redoing is teaching them the hand action.
How does your hands really work goingthrough the ball? What really happens?
Oh, it just happens. No, what doesn't happen? You should know
about that because if it doesn't feelright, it's your hands that will go
(23:32):
ahead to make it right on theway down. When I played, you
know, with Sam snead. Hetold me that if I hit seven,
maybe eight shots what I would considerperfect in a round, that would be
really good. Oh wait a while, hit another thirty some shots that were
not so good, but your abilityto adjust it with your hands on the
(23:52):
way. Now, let's call playinggolf rather than hitting. And speaking of
young people playing golf recently, herea couple of days ago yet team Wisconsin
versus Team Minnesota, and there wasa lot of young male and female players
here. And some of them arepretty darn good. Oh, some aren't
good. But how much time wegot, We got time, you know.
(24:18):
Unfortunately we didn't have our best playershere. Oh no, Lincoln Hotman's
one of the best players in thething. He's on a putty green.
He couldn't get in. Why couldn'tyou go in? You know? Mason
Burke another guy. They finished thirteenth. Therefore, well, you see,
in order to play in that team, you got to get points. In
order to get points, you gotto play in an event that's here.
(24:40):
So our PGA goes ahead to attractpeople, gives you points. So you
go here. So you're you're stoppingsome good you know, you're stopping somebody
who goes to play in an eventwhich is not a local event. They're
playing in international or regional or biggerevents so they can get points. Now
what are you doing? Yeah, that's not our best team. That's not
(25:03):
our best team. So my suggestion, which I'm gonna hopefully quit getting pissed,
you know, pissed off, andyou know, write them a note
and uh and say, you know, look at here, you've got to
do something different. What's wrong withhaving three exemptions? Find the best players
in the state, right, andthen you can do go down your list
of to fill out the other twelve. But don't you get tired of getting
(25:26):
beat Minnesota has been beating us forever. Now you sit at a table in
the morning with Larry and Minnesota wins. I'm gonna I'm getting tired of that,
you know what I'm saying. Sothere's there's a type of deal.
Then the other thing is this andI'm hoping he's listening, you know,
when you have an important event likethis Minnesota Wisconsin Cup match. That's what
(25:47):
you told me. That's why wedonated the course so that would happen.
We were interested in the youngsters togo and do it. Playing at TPC,
Wisconsin. It's not playing that likeOld Jerokee or some other private club.
This is a private club in theUnited States. It hasn't. It's
so we had him here and themain dude who runs our association, really
(26:08):
he works for us, you know, he works for me. He wasn't
here. How is it that themain dude is not here at a major
event in this state? I wonderwhy? Right, it's wrong? And
then again a six and a halfhour round. Are you kidding me?
What's going on? Where is theYou see what I'm saying? Okay,
(26:30):
I'm done. Otherwise I'll be here. He happened about this for Can we
circle back? Was it Jesse? Is that Jesse? I'm just gonna like
archive that in the notes. Wedon't miss it. Next year, I
can happen. I can see whyhe's the engineer. That's right. Let's
bring in Gary Tomato who is joiningus from a wist dot Golf and and
(26:53):
Gary's at Thief probably getting me allrileve already you going, and you're at
the State am which is going ongive us a little feedback on what's happened
there today. Well, first ofall, that was a great rant by
Dennis, I really enjoyed that.Did you agree with it or not?
That's the politician. You agree withit or out? Yes, that's the
(27:22):
maybe maybe. Yeah. Yeah.I am at the State Am at Legend
at Meryl Hills and Ty Kretz isyour leader five hundred power sixty six.
And Dennis, I'm sure you've playedhere over the years and stuff. This
course is really different than the lasttwo State Am venues they play, you
know, Sam Valley and Aaron Hills, kind of wide open Bomber's courses.
(27:45):
This is not that. What doyou remember Dennis from playing here at Meryl
Hills. Yeah, yeah, well, well you know, I mean,
I I'm trying to think of whatstood out in that particular deal. But
I'll tell you the one who's leadingState you know, I work with him
and spend time with his father andhim via telephone and the like, and
(28:07):
uh, it was one of thoseplayers who way back when so I suggested
maybe should come to Wisconsin, youknow, a good player, but that
but that didn't happen either then,uh, you know, but uh,
you know, I'm just trying tothink there at Meryl Hills what we do.
But it's you know, I knowthat it was a little bit tighter.
(28:30):
Yep, it was a little bittighter. And uh so it's a
ball striker's course, and this kidis really a good ball striker. You'll
hear about him more Ti crats, you'll hear about him a little bit later.
He's only I think he's a sophomorenow sophomore. Yeah, yeah,
yes, you're right, really goodplayer. And there's a bunch of badgers
(28:52):
up near the top of the leaderboardto Jacob Beckman and Cameron Huts are are
in a tie for second with willWilliam Harnet. So three badgers are actually
and so uh Ross Thompson, theassistant coach of Wisconsin type clip. So
the leaderboard is red and more waysand one there's a lot of Yeah,
there's some birdies by these guys, and and trust they're wearing red. So
(29:15):
it's gonna be a good finish here. I think it's uh the course is
very tight, tree lined, andthe greens are are tilted a lot of
them, you know, pretty severelyfrom back to front. So yeah,
and because they're soft, guys arespinning shots off the front of greens.
So you're right, Dennis, it'sa ball striker's course, you have to
be really good with your yeah, with your you know, your guy.
(29:37):
This guy that we have for coachureat Wisconsin is exceptional Mike and uh he's
uh, he really does go toI see him once every couple of weeks
and stuff and I but he's reallyinto it. And that team is gonna
I'll tell you what, they're gonnacontend for championship. They're going to give
you know, smally a little bitof a run before too. That would
(30:00):
be nice as you better a while. Well, you know, that's right.
It's been a while where we been, you know, and we still
have the best young people and theloyalty and the like that exists with Wisconsin
players. You know, this issome of the stuff that we have to
have to get back to. Butwhat do I know, you know,
(30:21):
Gary, the Scottish Open just wrappedup overseas in the Open Championship at Royal
Troon this week. I assume atsome point you have you've been there to
cover the Open Championship? Am Iwrong on that? No? I did
cover a couple of them back wayback in the day when the Journal Sentinel
had money to spend and spent it. I covered, actually covered the two
(30:44):
thousand and four Open Championship at RoyalTruon and I remember what I remember about
that one was Skip Kendall was coleader, I believe, after thirty six
old, and had a really goodweek. He didn't win, obviously,
but one of his better finishes ina major championship that was Todd Hamilton who
won that one. And then thenext year I covered the Open at St
Andrews where Tiger won and Jack madehis last Open appearance. So I caught
(31:07):
a couple of good ones there beforethis bigot ran dry and they stopped sending
me over there. Yeah, Iguess. So what are your thoughts on
the four Majors and if you havea rating of them in order? Some
people like the Open Championship because it'sthe original. Some people like Augusta and
the Masters because of the tradition andthe same golf course every year. Do
(31:27):
you have do you have a hierarchyof how you would rank them? But
you know that, honestly, I'mnot just saying this, but that really
is a tough one because there areall such great tournaments in their own right,
and you know, if you're inEurope obviously, or the rest of
the world. It's the Open Championshipabove everything. But I would go if
I had a rank, and Iwould go for me would be Masters,
(31:51):
US Open, Open Championship, andPGA. And when I say that,
when I ranked PGA four, that'snot to say I don't think it's a
good tournament. It's a great championship. But to me, the other three
just for various reasons, I'd puthigher, you know, the Masters because
the same course is great history, the traditions, and the US Open because
of what it is, our nationalchampionship. And I love I love the
(32:14):
Open Championship. I love waking up, you know, at four in the
morning, five in the morning andwatching them struggle with the weather and the
and the conditions there. So that'sthe way I rank him. Two quick
final thoughts. One, we werejust talking about Joe Pavelski and I wondered
if you had, if at wisdot Golf, if you guys had done
a feature with Joe yet, orif that might be something down the road
you know we have we have notyet, but definitely that's something I've got
(32:37):
on my uh my agenda to dosomething something with Joe because he's been a
really, really good player for along time. Obviously, two sports star
one sport may be bigger than theother. But but yeah, yeah,
but very very talented guy and weneed to do a piece on him.
You're right about that. Well, and then have you finished by plugging?
(32:57):
What do you have coming up atwhist dot Golf? Tons of stuff?
You know, Rob Hernanas and Iboth are at the State Am this week,
and we've got, you know, basically tournament coverage now for the next
three or four weeks leading up tothe State Open. There's a bunch of
stuff that we're going to be atrunning around and robson town only through the
end of the week, but thenhe comes back to help me with the
State Open. And so yeah,so that of tournament coverage to go before
(33:22):
we pull the plug on tournaments thisyear. Gary Tomato, always good to
hear your voice. Thanks for spendingtime with us, and we will talk
again next week. Thankst guys appreciateit. Thanks Gary. That's Gary Tomotto

you on talking Golf, Mike Keller, along with Travis Becker, the director
of Instruction here at TPC Wisconsin inMadison, We're gonna do something a little
bit different here in this segment. We're going to talk about the Golf Foundation
(37:24):
of Wisconsin, which is up andrunning. And the mission of the Golf
Foundation of Wisconsin as it's written isto use the game of golf to provide
educational and training opportunities. The GolfFoundation of Wisconsin will be involved in raising
funds that will benefit lifestyles, charitiesand communities. The Golf Foundation of Wisconsin's
team of award winning professionals, oneof them right here, have been blessed
(37:45):
with a special gift to teach andcoach the game of golf, and they
are passionate about sharing their gift tothe lives that they touch. It's a
whole plan, Travis, that youguys have put together and now implemented.
Its underway, and it is openfor those who want to donate and be
part of it. And part ofthe mission that you're working on initially is
(38:07):
especially driven towards youth females, Sogirls golf. So let's talk about where
the process is and how you playit forward. Yeah. So currently we've
just ran a couple golf academies. We started with a couple of high school
programs here in our backyard with MadisonEast and Madison the Folllet. They have
a hard time right now getting enoughgirls to even go out for the program
(38:30):
to create a team. So weoffered any girl in seventh through twelfth grade
that will either be attending Madison Eastor Madison the follt a two day golf
academy that we held in June.It was two four hour sessions where we
kind of cover all aspects of thegame, and then we also allow them
free access to our coaches here atTPC Wisconsin to take private instruction in the
(38:52):
months of July and August to preparethem for their high school season. Yeah,
and that's one of the things Dennishas talked about this at length on
the show throughout this season of showsabout the growth of the game for girls.
We've talked about the game can beat times, and we're working against
this. At times it can bea game of privilege, but It's also
(39:13):
a game of access, and somegirls don't believe they have access, and
that's one of the goals is toget it there correct. We're trying to
get them comfortable with the game ofgolf, and who knows, it could
lead to a college scholarship, Itcould lead to changing their life where they
have a different recreational activity where theycan get outdoors and exercise. As they
continue to grow, it could bea business operaty tunity for them. So
(39:37):
we see there's a little bit ofa hole there with We're also focusing on
some schools in northern Wisconsin where wehad a rural golf academy, where we're
kind of focusing on non metropolitan areasthat may not have access to PGA golf
professionals or access to golf courses wherewe had an academy for them. They
came down. They have access tous virtually now, so we can do
(39:59):
online golf lessons with them. Theysend us their swing and we can make
notes to it, voice record overtheir video and send back and they have
things to work on. All right, I'm going to get to the Orange
Shirt and the Junior League All Starsthat were out here earlier today on this
Monday, I'll get to it,but I want to continue on with the
foundation and the girl's side of it, because that growth opportunity is really unique.
(40:22):
We've talked about this with your juniorleague. It's an individual sport,
but especially at its beginnings and withjunior league, you very much make it
a team sport with uniform numbers andthose orange shirts with a jersey number and
a name on it. It's partof a process to bring everybody together correct.
It takes a little bit of pressureoff if they're playing in a team
atmosphere and they can hang out.You can see girls volleyball is very popular,
(40:45):
Girls softball is very popular. Golfis trying to do the same thing
with that jersey and that number onyour back and just creating that atmosphere.
What's the biggest challenge as you haveworked over You've been in this a while,
but as you work with young girlsin the game or girls that are
new to the game, is therea different challenge than there is for young
(41:06):
boys. I would say a lotof similarities, but girls are maybe a
little more emotional sure when it comesto golf, and their highs are much
higher and their lows are much lower, but it's training them to be even
keel and just think of it.Hey, it's one shot at a time
and just go out there, havefun, keep getting better and improving,
and this could be a lifelong sportfor him. The growth is so quick
(41:29):
though, and it like when youget young women, thirteen fourteen year old
girls who haven't played before. Whenyou get them and you can teach them
the proper techniques, the growth isreally rapid and it's isn't it fun to
see their excitement when a shot goesin the air and it goes in the
intended direction and on target. It'syeah, that's why I do what I
do. I just love looking attheir responses when they hit a good shot
(41:52):
and how they react and their smile, and yeah, they can get it
fast. And there's a big opportunityfor girls the college level to receive scholarships.
It's one of the most unused collegescholarships out there. So if they
get into it and they like it, it could help pay for their education
in the future. Yeah, let'sgo back to the bigger network concept for
(42:12):
foundation. You talked about rural Muchof the access there is that there aren't
qualified teachers of the game that theyhave access to. And that's one of
the reasons the foundation is there isnot only to have access, but to
have access where it's not money outof their pocket to have access. Correct.
Correct, And again I wouldn't saythey're not qualified. I would just
say there was a lack of There'smany golf courses in northern Wisconsin where they
(42:36):
don't have the funds to hire aPGA professional, so they don't have access.
So part of the foundation is we'regetting it off the ground here at
TPC Wisconsin. But what we wouldlike to do is take these pockets in
the state and train some of thesePGA professionals or LPGA professionals through our program
here and purchase so many hours withthem that these kids don't have to drive
(42:57):
to Madison. They could find apro within an hour from now and have
unlimited access to them to receive instruction. Okay, a couple of thoughts here

Fantastic. Yes. Today was ourfirst All Star play Day, which is
something that we are just getting goingin the state of Wisconsin where we take
(43:42):
our better teams from our league andwe take on other teams from around the
state. Today we hosted the AllStars from Green Bay, Wisconsin. So
it's eight kids playing against eight kids. They play a two person scramble.
Format's a little different than the traditionaljunior league where they play match play nine
holes. This is aggre get strokeplay more like the high school level where
you take four out of the bestfive scores. We take three out of
(44:05):
the best four scores. It thengets put on a leaderboard in the Midwest,
so it's Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan and if you make
the top four leader boards there thenyou automatically get exempt into the regionals for

and along with Mike Keller, Dennisdoes Hennie. I'm Paul Brown, and
we're trying to get a hold ofBobby Stricker, who is going to be
with us. Bobby had a busylast week or so. She was out
(48:12):
in California. She got fitted bythe title of people out there. It'll
be interesting to hear what she foundout about her equipment and that kind of
thing. She's also going to beplaying Dennis. In terms of Bobby,
you see her all the time,You watch her practice when she's around TPC
and that type of thing. You'vewatched how she's grown over the last couple
(48:35):
of years. What's your thoughts onBobby? Where's she at well, she's
coming along really good and it's goingto get better. What she's finding out
is that she's a good player, different than when you start out and you
go over there and you hear allthese lot of foreign players and stuff like
that. But she found out thatshe can play with them. And she's
also becoming her own best teacher. She doesn't have to have dad or Grandpa
(48:58):
there to tell her what to do. That's a big item. So as
you're out there when we're not around, you can fix it. What do
you mean when you say she's herbest teacher, that she understands the physics
of what you need to get to. She can determine by ball flight and
trajectory where the issue is. Youknow, shape and trajectory is in your
(49:21):
hands, path is in your shouldersin relationship to the line of impact,
governed by your footwork. So sheunderstand she knows that she knows what to
do in order for that to happen. So you know, I watched her
at ball's very consistent, very good. She was a little upset because Izzie
over drove her by about ten tenyards the last time. So when she
(49:44):
went to get fit the club, they fit her with She picked up the
ten yards just like that, Soshe felt good about that anyway. But
I like the fact that she's youngyet she's twenty five, so got a
good five years or more before thatmaternal instinct takes over. And uh,
you know, she's been offered greatjobs already. But I would think she's
(50:06):
that type of a person who issought after for personality and intelligence and and
the things that go with it.Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna ask this
question of Bobby because I was goingto ask you. Bobby's now on the
line with so, so we wereyou know, if your ears are ring?
We were talking about your game andone of the things that that I
(50:28):
always wonder about Grandpa's raven about, you know, your swing and how you
get it and how you're your bestteacher. But is there So I'll figure
out how to best ask this,or if I don't, you'll understand the
direction I'm going. Do you haveto play catch up because you didn't play
as much tournament golf as many ofthe ladies that you're playing with and against.
(50:49):
How do you view that? Yeah, that's definitely changing kind of right
now. I would say, yes, I did feel like that. When
I got to college, for sure, I was just like not as experienced.
I felt like I didn't have enoughreps. My swing was super malleable,
(51:14):
like I could just which was coolbecause I know Grandpa can attest to
this too, and it's cool, like this is how I learn. I'm
really quick to pick up something andto change something really fast. It's worked
to my advantage, but it's alsoworked to my disadvantage because my swing not
so much anymore, I would say, but like it used to change all
(51:36):
the time, and now it's like, yeah, I feel like I have
a good like core just understanding ofwhat kind of positions need to be and
yeah, like like Grandpa said,I like being your own best teacher.
He tells us that literally all thetime. But it's true, like you
(51:59):
need to know kind of what's happeningto if you're on the road by yourself,
Like you need to know what's happeningto kind of change that why is
it turning over so much? Whyis it cutting? And that that is
I'm I'm learning, Like I'm kindof at that point I guess right now,
which is really cool, Bobby. In relation to you, what you're
(52:21):
just talking about you were fitted bytitle of Stout in California. What did
you come away with? What didyou find out? Yeah, another two
years I did Grandpa's right, anotherten yards. I got there and it
was the same guy that fitted mysister. I don't know if I told
this story last week. I can'tremember. It was the same guy that
fitted my sister a couple months ago. She went out there with my dad
(52:45):
and my first thing was my sister'shitting at ten by me and I can't
have that. And he was like, all right, so we hit drivers
first. I explained, you know, kind of the situation. I had
a weird gaped in my five ironand my utility club, and he's like,
let's hit drivers first. And myfirst couple of golf balls were compared
(53:07):
to my driver that I currently havein my bag, we're ten yards further.
So that was cool, right, covered, We got that covered to
watch out. But yeah, athree wood, a five wood, and
then a utility club and a fouriron, which I will interchange in my
(53:27):
bag kind of depending on you know, golf course situations like a week just
like a decision week to week onyou know, conditions that I'm playing in
and then maybe some par threes thatif we have longer par threes, deciding
you know, if I want awood or an iron to hit into those.
Bobby, Where's what's next in yourgame? You know we've talked about
(53:50):
Q school coming up next month, but you're going to be playing a fair
amount between now and then. What'scoming up? Yeah? Yeah, sorry,
I was late to the call.I am in and I just got
here. Today's kind of a hecticday, so I got to play nine
holes. It's like one hundred degreeshere. It's like literally being in an
air dryer. So so yeah,I'm here this week playing. I start
(54:15):

Tour, so the same tour I'vebeen playing on. Really excited to play,
haven't haven't competed in a couple ofweeks, so I'm really excited to
play. And then I have aweek off and then I play one more
out here before to school. Solike I said, I'm really pumped to

(58:02):
on talking Golf from TPC Wisconsin,Dennis. Earlier, we were talking to
Travis Becker about the Golf Foundation ofWisconsin. Obviously your integral in that storyline.
Let me have you fill in someof the blanks because you're passionate about
this concept and how you can growespecially right now with young women and getting
girls involved in golf. Absolutely.Well, you know how it all started
(58:24):
back in the eighties. I waspresident of the section way back then and
I did this Golf Foundation of Wisconsin. What that was was principles of every
major organization met quarterly and we wouldtalk about golf. It, you know,
disappeared, you know, I don'tknow whether anyway I found out about
it, got it back, andnow we owned that Golf Foundation Wisconsin.
(58:47):
The reason we did it was wewere going to raise money. We were
going to raise money to pay instructorsin various areas that had high schools with
