Rock Golf Club, Simbritt Mercedes Benzof Madison, also University Ridge Golf Course,
(00:23):
Ridge Top Exteriors, Cleary Building Corp. And Nevada Bobbs. Now from
the new home of TPC Wisconsin andMadison. Here are the hosts of Talking
Golf. Member of the Wisconsin GolfHall of Fame, the legendary Dennis Tizziani,
longtime Madison sportscaster Paul Brown, andWisconsin sports veteran and State wife radio
(00:45):
host Mike Hallard. Well, wewelcome you in on another Monday night Talking
Golf. The Major golf season comesto a close over the weekend at Royal
Troon on the west coast of Scotland. It is Xandershaw who wins his second
major of the year, his firsttwo majors in his career, and he
becomes the fourth player in the lastdecade to win two majors in a year.
(01:10):
There are arguably four of the fivetop players in the world over the
last decade, and that's Jordan Speithand Rory McElroy and Brooks Koepka and now
Xander Schaffley Scott Scheffler. Scotty Schfflerhadn't won two in a year, but
right now he's the number one rankedgolfer in the world. Dennis, let
me begin here, because Xander Schaffleygoes ahead and wins. He hadn't won,
(01:30):
he had struggled when he'd gotten close. He's been in contention so often,
and it brings me to the openingquestion is can you teach the mental
toughness, the psychology of the gamethat gets players over the top, or
is it only learned? It's onlylearned by experience. Absolutely, you got
it. You have to get there. You got to look. And when
(01:51):
you're looking down a fairway and thefairway turns red and gold and blue and
everything else, you know that's what'sgoing on. How do I handle?
That's something that you have to beinto. You know, you can go
along and say, some of theseyoung guys are good tiger Wood, but
they experienced all this thing when theywere sixteen years old. They already knew
what was going on. But you'llhave to experience it to teach them.
(02:15):
You can make him aware of ifyou have to run to a psychiatrist to
learn what's going on in golf, you got an issue. Yeah, because
we talk about teaching the game, but you have to learn, and I
don't know that there are any quicksteps you have to fail in order to
get comfortable. And he didn't openany doors yesterday on the back nine on
Sunday at the Oldendies. He hitevery green and regulation on the back nine
(02:38):
last night. But he had acouple shot lead. He canlead to go,
but he's been there before. Heunderstands what's going on. He hangs
out with some of those guys thatare really good, but something that you
have to experience. I thought itwas incredible. He was the only player
all day on Sunday that birdie numbereleven. Yeah, everybody that went through
(03:00):
and his second shot was an unbelievableshot. That's crazy to think that he's
the only guy that burdied. Whyis that hole so difficult? I don't
know why. As any hole, you know some of them. You know,
it depends on where he is.He's breathing right, he's thinking right,
and he's thinking about the right things. God knows what he's thinking about,
(03:21):
you know. When I talked toHogan, he talked about being in
the zone, you know that whathe was, And I said, well,
what is that? He says nothing, and he looked at me and
kept on walking. I talked toArnold, what about this? Well,
he says, I believe everything hasenergy. That bird over there has energy,
and that thing has energy. Andwhat I would do is grab all
(03:43):
the energy from all those things, and I'd put it right inside of me,
and that's where I would keep it. Yeah, I mean, well
and totally different. We've talked aboutthis many many times over the years,
and I've talked about it with othercoaches in other sports, and Dennis said
that is that there is no replace, no substitute for learning to be comfortable
(04:03):
when you're uncomfortable. Now, quarterbacksdo it in football, point guards do
it in basketball. Forwards and centersdo it in hockey. At some point
you have to be comfortable when thenerves start to elevate. Well, you
got to get in the position tolose, and then how do you handle
it when you get done that Ilearned something from that loss? Or am
(04:23):
I just going to give in makingfree throws to win the game. If
you've never been there before, noclue. You know, I can tell
you about that. I've been there, so I know about that. And
when you can't feel anything, youcan't see anything, you know, But
then how do you rally to makethat happen? But it's a learning process.
You have to you have to getin the position to get beat.
(04:46):
Once you get in that position toget beat, then you know when you
get up and you do it again, Then you get up and do it
again. Next thing you know, you got it. This is Shofly.
He's a good player. You know, he's a good player. You know's
what I'm saying. He hits theball pretty good, but he's a good
player. You can just see goingdown the road that he's got the stuff.
You get to look at Bryson anotherguy. See, these guys been
(05:08):
beat up before. They know whatit is to fight, and so Denniswitz.
Over the four days of the tournament, obviously there was a lot of
talk about the rain and the wind. For an example, Rory said he
missed the cutting who was eleven overand he said the wind got the better
of him. For all people thatplay golf, what are the fundamental things
(05:29):
about playing in the wind? Orhow what do you use as an approach
in that kind of as situation orthe rain. He's a one dimensional player,
Okay. He puts it up here, drops underneath, hits it high,
and he hits it right the left. You cannot be a one dimensional
player in the wind. You betterlearn how to keep the ball down.
You cannot leave it up there andlet the wind be your friend. You
(05:50):
know, you got to keep them. Steve Stricker plays good over there because
what he knows how to chip itand he can do his drill, knock
it down, turn it in.You get that guy that can do that,
that person that can do that,But you get these one dimensional players.
Jordan Speth up on the top, finding funky up here, goes over
the top, hits it high, and sometime it goes left to right,
(06:12):
sometimes right to left. Fundamentally, this guy, if he couldn't putt he
couldn't even be out there. Youknow. But now Xanders say, you
look at watch his swing. Watchwhat's going on. You watch where the
ball comes, You watch how theYou've got to keep the ball down over
there. You can't leave the ballup in the win because when it loses
its steam, it's gone back onthe business of the little ball. The
(06:35):
little ball didn't get up in theair Mike and I got criticized, Well,
we should, we should. Ishould have known that. I won't
have ever known that. You haveno excuse for not knowing that. Now,
it's what I'm meaning. Well, that's why that little ball was out
there. But today they had thathard plastic ball, so it doesn't spin
as much. If it doesn't spin, it's not going up. Seriously,
(06:58):
and how about playing in the ring, what are some thoughts there, well,
in terms of everybody playing in theright. When you play in adverse
conditions, what makes the ball goup in the air? His weight at
the bottom of the club. Chokedown an inch. You took out two
swing whites, there's no weight atthe bottom, and then go three quarters
to three quarters. That's it.That's all you have to do. The
ball's not going to go up inthe air. It can't. There's no
(07:20):
weight at the bottom. And youtook three hitting it hard with weight at
the bottom, the ball's going up. So you choke down an inch,
go three quarters to three quarters.Took the weight out, and you might
have to take another club or whatever. But now you brought the thing.
That's a simple way to do it. I know that talked about this briefly
a couple of weeks ago. SoXanderschoffley wins, and then there is criticism,
(07:44):
Well the tour doesn't have any entertainers. This is He's a boring winner.
Scotti, Scheffler's a boring winner. There's no personality there. Well,
it's real, but you can't createit. You know, Palmer was Palmer,
Nicholas was, Nicholas is Tiger. The guy's gonna be who he is.
You cannot create personality. It willcome. And I talked about this
(08:07):
a few weeks ago as it relatesto Caitlin Clark. Different sport, but
something about her game has brought eyeballsto the game. But you can't create
that. It is either and she'sreally good. It's really good. Oh
boy. But you know when Iwhen we played, there was no noise.
(08:28):
Sure, yeah, when there isnow, that's all there is is
noise. They never stopped talking, they never stopped taking pictures, they never
stopped drinking. And they don't evenwatch what the hell's going on out there?
Oh you're talking about the spectators.Yeah, well I's talking about me,
Well, anybody, you know,I'd rather sit home in my living
room and drink beer or Benser's whateverto watch this. And then you know,
(08:50):
most people don't even know how tohold the club right, and they're
criticizing somebody who's playing out there todo it. So, you know,
but you mentioned Tiger. Yeah,he announced he missed the cut. He's
only played five tournaments in seven months. He missed the cut the last three
times. He was fourteen over parer. He's announced he's not going to play
(09:11):
except one tournament in the next fivemonths, and he wants to concentrate on
physical conditioning. What do you thinkof that whole situation? Well, you
know that's his way out. Let'sput it this way. He's past this
deal. You know, I watchhis swing. We've got movies of it.
We use it a lot in ourteaching process. It's perfect. I
mean, the swing is as good. It's better than anybody out there,
(09:33):
I know. So somewhere along theline, he's lost the connector between his
brain and sure and the physical that'swhat's happened, you know. And he's
older now, he doesn't react asmuch. Certainly, he doesn't put his
good Yeah, you know, that'sa big item. He made putts from
all over the world like Jordan spBut if you watch technically, he has
(09:54):
the best swing in golf. Yeah, you know, but playing his whole
different story. Now he's got towalk around, he's limping. God knows
that. I can't believe he's beenalbeit that it doesn't have some sort of
pain or some sort of twitch whenhe does it. Yeah, you know.
And he got away by taking hisleft leg and kicking his left knee
(10:18):
back in the lock position, whichincreases the torque. But he broke his
leg doing it. You know, you can't do that. You can't keep
on doing that. And that's whathappened. That's his swing. But if
you watch fundamentals, grip stance eighto'clock all the way up to the top,
the movement going back, it's alot slower, you know, what
(10:39):
is lower than it was ball Hisback is bad and all that is bad.
But fundamentally when you take it thatthat's the best swing in golf.
And that not justin Rose, butthe other guy, the other Australian guy,
Adam Scott. Adam Scott, anotherguy fundamentally good. But if you
go back in time, and you'dasked, Adam's got who he mimicked for
(11:01):
a swing? Yeah? You knowit was our boy. Yeah, yeah,
Well it's it is the end ofthe major golf season. We will
have the President's Cup coming up laterin September, late late September, but
this is the calendar change, andI think that works from consecutive months of
(11:22):
majors April, May, June,July. But it does end the golf
season. And there was a reason. I mean, the simple reason was,
you're not gonna They didn't want theTV side, They did not want
to compete with college and the NFL, and they can't take the money out
of the game and find out howthat would change. That's take the money
out and then find out how itwould change. You know what I've but
(11:45):
these dues, collection agencies. Youget me going on that sort. I
wasn't planning on getting going. You'reteeing me up a little bit there.
That's wrong. Golf goes through thewhole year. There's people who play all
year round. What about having thosethings and you can't do more, I
know, two more any more majors. It's really good, but clearly the
(12:05):
Masters, that's it. Well,in the rest, do you think the
FedEx Cup is going to lose thetotal value that it's had based on with
live and with the regular tour andcompeting with football college's we said this off
the year. This is my opinion, and I'm pretty sure it's Dennis of
this mindset too, and I don'twant to tee him up. But the
(12:26):
reason I don't get all that excitedabout the FedEx Cup is these are all
of the biggest money winners on thetour this year that are then playing a
series of events for even bigger moneythan they made at any point during the
year. We'll we'll see that whensomebody wins consecutive weeks on the FedEx Cup,
they will have won eleven million dollarsover two weeks. And I'm like,
(12:48):
okay, the joy of that, the competitive integrity of it, to
me, it loses some of it, some of the luster. I don't
want to see him up because wewon't get the commercial break. In years
ago they didn't have that money.I know, But what people do you
remember in golf today, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicholas, down the line.
(13:11):
They were there for the love ofthe game. Yes, now, I
understand the judge the size of theperson today in golf by how much money
they make. Has nothing else, just how much money you make. That's
the stats. Well it's tournaments oneand that that much money, correct,
how much money. And we're goingto run down the same road in college
sports eventually in high school. Rightnow it's going to be you know,
(13:35):
we're going to be starting all overbefore too long. Mike wasn't involved with
the show. Remember we had JackNicholas on the air. You're about four
or five years ago, remember, and he talked about his when he first
started playing golf. He played inone tournament. Two other guys tied.
They split thirty three dollars and thirtythree cents a piece. That's what they
got. Who got the penny? And I asked Jack, I said,
(13:58):
what happened to the extra penny? And you started laughing. He says,
I have no idea, but Ibut think of that three Well, think
of and Dennis knows this because helived it. Think of playing for your
livelihood and you don't know, it'slike gambling at some level. You don't
know if you can play next weekif you don't make some money this week.
Because who's going to pay for it? I know all about it.
(14:20):
I had a wife and three kids, no car, trying to play and
you know, make a cut andmake you know, eight hundred dollars and
think you're going to make it.You came to Madison and took this job
with what a couple of hundred bucks? No, no, sixty three sixty
three bucks in hockey? Three bucks? You're rich? I was. I
was rich in a different way. What is that? A wife and three
(14:41):
kids, no car, no nothing. But that's a whole other deal.
The appreciation I think that I havefor a golf game is totally different in
what's coming up today. And Itold you that I I think golfers are
worse today than they were ten yearsago, and certainly worse than twenty years
ago. I take a look atwhat we had here, eighty guys of
(15:05):
a handicap of eight and under. When I first came here, they were
golfers. That's what they did.You want to know, are you kidding
me? That's not the way itworks. And I and I go backwards,
well why is that? Well, they're not being taught, right,
They go rather go out there andplay around and tell me to. You
know, I listened to some ofthat stuff, but I see what's happening.
(15:26):
I see what's happening here now.In the last week, I got
two calls from two guys that wantto hire me to give them a lesson.
I said, but you don't understand. Yeah, I don't do it.
I don't do it, don't,I don't. That approach doesn't work.
I don't do that well. Andhere's the thing that people that might
(15:46):
not know Dennis on this front isthat if somebody says, hey, can
you come look at my swing,or hey I'm not making potts, You're
you're going to take the golf cartand go help them. And then they're
going to say how much I oweyou? And you're going to say,
well, I don't do that.Just keep paying your dues. Yeah,
that's what I tell them. Iwant you to keep playing good, so
you keep paying your dues. SoI have a different motives. But even
(16:07):
still, I think of where arethose teachers now is I'm not criticizing the
people that are here, but I'llcriticize those people PGA wise, go right
to the top. Why is itthat how are you going to attract good
employees? Without a program for retirement, without any we don't have that.
(16:29):
You go and build up thirteen fiftywhatever million dollar building down in Dallas,
Texas for what what is that about? Yeah? You know, well,
and then that's bad. I seeit. I see it all the time
that you know of courses are tryingto pick up and they would I don't
see it. They become merchandisers, sure, you know, credit card collectors,
(16:49):
make sure I get a tee time, make sure all that's But and
there's a lot of golf course ownersthat not all of them, but a
lot of them that don't want tohire a PGA because they don't want to
pay for your trip to go toyour seminars, They don't want to pay
for you to go to PGA show. They don't want to do these things.
When I left spring Green, whenI was in the golf business,
(17:10):
when I left spring Green twenty fouryears ago, I don't believe they've had
a PGA pro since they decided theydidn't. They don't need that. And
that's your point, because then who'sthere to give lessons, Who's who's there
to teach the game, to forwardthe game, to establish junior programs and
to teach them in the proper manner, which is what happens here with guys
(17:33):
like Travis and you know the stiffthat crew. Yeah they're busy. Yeah,

Oh we got Gary Demtto again. It's one of those breaks. Yeah,
there's a story Gary is in andof himself. Gary Demotto Wisconsin dot Golf
joins us. Boy, exactly, that's what I'm thinking. Let me start
where we were in last week, and that's the Wisconsin Men's or the Men's
(21:33):
Amateur at the State am that GarrettJones, who Dennis is very familiar with.
Garrett Jones won that tournament at MerylHills. Let's talk about what did
you see as you were there andcovering that tournament. Yeah, really impress
us in really difficult conditions. MerylHills. The WSJ and the maintenance staff
super ed Meryl Hills did a greatjob setting up that course. I think
(21:55):
really tested all the players. Youknow, the winning score even power for
seventy two holes, and Garrett wastremendous. I mean, you know,
there were a bunch of guys jockingfor the lead going into the final round,
and he took control of the championshipon the back nine, burding I
think three out of four hosts tostart the back nine, and just you
know after that he was a fairwaysand greens machine and had a stumble on
(22:18):
the final hall with a double bodie, but he had a three shot cushion,
so still one by one. Reallyimpressive, you know, thirty nine
years old and he finally went toStadam after many years of trying. He's
such a good player, and youknow we watched that. What I don't
know, I never will fully understandwhat the separation is Dennis. When a
(22:38):
guy he's such a good player,Garrett to get over that hump, That's
what we were talking about kind ofout of the beginning. Now, you
know. I recruited him, Yeah, and then I quit when he was
in his freshman year. But wemade some conversation with Steve. He made
sure not at the time. Buthe had probably the best natural swing of
(23:03):
any person that I ever recruited naturalswing. And you know, my thing
would be with him is to gethim to understand how good he really could
be. And right, that wasthe deal, and it took him.
You know, he's the nicest guy, no kidding me. You know he's
got the nice wife there. Heoutpunted his coverage with that. Yeah,
(23:23):
but you know he's you're gonna hearmore about him. Yeah, he's going
to get back. We're going toget back together again on some things so
that he can I think he couldtake it to another level. Easy enough,
Gary, let's take you over onthe other side of the pond.
The Open Championship, wrapping up XanderSoftley winning a second major of the year,
(23:45):
first got to do it since BrooksKopka in twenty eighteen. Just your
overall thoughts of the end of themajor championship season on the men's tour.
Well, you know, I've beenreading some of the players on the tour.
Maxwell in particular, who's close toXander, a couple of years ago,
said this guy's going to win notjust a major or two, He's
going to win multiple majors, andI think people roll their eyes a little
(24:07):
bit because at that point, andeven up until this year, Xander was
known for, you know, toptens and majors, but not being able
to close them out. Well, all of a sudden, he closed one
out at the PGA. Now he'swon number two, and who knows how
many of the guy's going to win. I mean, he's a great,
great player, and you know,I've hear I've heard some arguments about whether
he or Scotti Shepherd should be Playerof the Year at this point, Well,
(24:30):
how can you not pick Xander who'swon two majors? Whence the last
time a guy went two majors andwas not Player of the Year. And
with all due respect to Scotty whohad a fantastic first five months of the
year, and I think what happenedto him at the PG Championship with the
arrest and everything that really messed withhim a lot. But yeah, I
think Xander right now clearly the frontarnor for Player of the Year. Yeah.
(24:52):
And we talk about success on themajor tours and players that get there,
and then I think of Or whohad a terrible first couple of days
and did not make the cut,and people will speculate all over the map
on what has been the demise ofhis game, But part of it has
to be how involved he has beenin non on course golf elements. No,
(25:15):
don't you think there are distractions involvedin being so politically involved in what's
going on with the PGA and Live. I think there were for a while,
for a year or two. ButI think, you know, he's
pretty much divorced himself from a lotof that last few months. I think
he realized that it was hurting hisgame, and you know, there's some
(25:36):
skeletons in his closet and out thereare some things floating around in his brain.
I think when he gets some contentionin majors, I'd like to know.
I mean, he's got such agreat he's such a talented guy,
definitely, you know. I mean, if you were going to pick the
most talented golf in the world juston pure talent, you'd probably pick Rory.
But why hasn't he been able to, you know, add to his
major total for ten years? Now? That's a good question for Dennis.
(25:59):
I think maybe not. I toldyou he's one dimensional. He's one dimensional
in his swing, there's only oneway that that can go high right to
left, and you know that's whatit is. And I don't think you
can move the club around like hedid, I mean like he does.
He finds the plane by dropping hisarms underneath the plane and then he can
(26:21):
go ahead and different than a conventionalswing that I would show you or that
we know about. So you know, is he a good player? Come
on, Yeah, absolutely, he'sa good player. But you know this
other guy is more fundamentally correct thanthis guy is, and you can't keep
(26:41):
trying to find that. Sooner orlater it's going to go. Plus,
you know, I watch him.You know there's some putts that he should
be making, I mean making he'sI think he's getting screwed on him.
And all it takes is one togo the right way and then he's off
and running. So we haven't heardthe lasting him, of course, not
absolutely not. And there's other playerscoming up that are that I see,
(27:04):
that are really good and fundamental. So you watch this Oberg guy, Yeah,
yeah, watch him. He's twentysome years old, young, twenty
Wait till he gets beat up afew more times because fundamentally he's correct.
Yeah, it's real good. What'son your agenda for the next couple of
weeks and covering Wisconsin and in thenation and golf. Yeah, I'm working
(27:29):
this week. I've got a ferrycoming up. Should post in a couple
of days on It's going to beinteresting. Austin Kinzorski, who played at
Marquette and has played you know, played around on the mini tours now for
I guess five or six years,is going to start a mini tour in
Wisconsin. He's already got two eventsfor twenty twenty five at the Bow and
(27:52):
second one place Escapes from me,but two good courses, wild Rock,
and they eventually want to have ayou know, ten to twelve events in
Wisconsin in the Midwest, and thepurses are going to be four hundred thousand
dollars, So that's big purses fora mini tour, and they're going to
spread the money out. You know, usually a mini tours it's really top
(28:14):
heavy, where the top two orthree guys you know, can can make
some money and go on to thenext event, and the rest of the
people are making hundreds of dollars, not thousands. Well, they're going to
spread the money out in the purseso that if you make the cut,
you at least get your entry feedbackand more. And I think it's uh,
you know, I think it's goingto succeed. There's a lot of
golfers in Wisconsin who'll have to goto Dakota's tour or down to Florida to
(28:37):
play, who don't have status anywhere, and it sounds like they've got some
really good ideas. They've got somecourses on board. Austin does, and
he's going to gradually move away froma playing career and eventually I think this
is going to be his His careeris running a mini tour. So that's
a pretty cool start of that off. Yeah, very good. That'll be
at West Dot Golf. Last onefor me, and that is we've talked
(28:59):
about this, Gary Auto the calendarin the past. Well, that golf
momentum that builds from March to obviouslythe majors April, May, June,
July, that hits the end nowof the golf major season. Do you
think that the television side and thePGA is good with where they are calendar
wise and do you personally like itnow knowing that the majors are done here
(29:22):
in July. I personally like it. I like the idea of having a
major a month and sort of thatnice rhythm and flow to the season.
You know, they've got a schedulein the fall obviously, but they go
against football and golf is you know, unless you're a diehard fan, you're
not watching golf on weekends. You'rewatching the NFL, right, So I
(29:44):
think the schedule is in a goodplace. I think you're going to see
a lot of changes go in ayear or two as they as they move,
you know, whatever happens with livwhether there's any kind of merger or
not. I think the schedule isgoing to in flux. And I think
as also as the person just continueto go up, you're going to see
more and more sponsors bail and it'sgoing to be harder to find money,
I think, to fund some ofthese events. So I think, what's
(30:07):
you know, it's really going tobe interesting in two to three years to
see what the schedule looks like.Gary Dematto, it's always fun to visit
with you, right, Dennis.Maybe I'm sure whoa you buy her back?
He said? The feelings mutual.Oh yeah, man, we see
(30:30):
Gary, Thank you will look forwardto the next time we get a chance
to visit. Thanks gentlemen, Thankyou. Gary Tomato joining us as he

of Instruction here at TPC Wisconsin inMadison. A week ago, we were
talking about the Golf Foundation of Wisconsin, which is now up and running.
It's an endeavor that is a passionplay for Dennis and you and many others
that have been behind this to getit going. And one of the areas
I wanted to talk about that wedidn't get to last week was a little
(34:30):
bit on the beneficiary side, especiallywith the Golfer give back program that's involved
correct. So this year we tookour team of professionals from TPC Wisconsin.
We picked a school nearby. It'sCreekside Elementary and Sun Prairie. They're getting
a food bank up and running fortheir school, and what we did through
the foundation as we purchased a foodcooler because they could only keep dry foods.
(34:53):
They had no access to milk oranything that need to be refrigerated,
so we wanted and purchased a foodcool for that program. We also got
to go in to their school andteach golf to the entire third grade class.
It was a lot of fun.We used snag golf we'd had set
up where we did full swing onone half of the gym and then we
did putting and chipping on the otherhalf. We get to see some of
(35:15):
the kids. We also had theteachers and our staff kind of looking for
maybe some talent, and we scholarshipedone child from that program into our summer
program here at TPC Wisconsin. Okay, so the question it begs the question
of where does the money for theGolf Foundation of Wisconsin come from. Obviously
there has been some beneficiary from thefamily and what I would assume what amfam
(35:40):
has done with the tournament, ormaybe I misspeaking. Let's talk about where
the funding come from. Where's themoney? So right now it's coming from
some of the membership at TPC Wisconsin. That was you know, they felt
like they wanted to donate to helpout. They really like the cause.
Maybe some of their kids are takingpart of our programs and get to see
first hand on how we can changetheir lives and they would like to help
(36:04):
out other people and do the samething. But again, we are taking
donors online right through the website that'sour biggest function. We have some sponsorship
opportunities on there where they can getinvolved with us. There's an opportunity to
play TPC Wisconsin by donating one thousanddollars. Yeah, so we have many
different avenues how to give money tothe foundation. Yeah. By the way,
(36:25):
that's one thousand dollars for a foursome. You don't have to play with
a member, and that money allgoes to Golf Foundation of Wisconsin. You
can find out more information just byreaching out to TPC Wisconsin. Let's go
into a little swing thoughts as werun through here now in the middle of
the golf season. Some of themost common issues that golfers run into,
(36:46):
and two of them are kind ofjuxtaposed. It is topping shots, hitting
the top half of the golf ball, or hitting fat shots. Are there
simple cues that you address when somebodyhas either or both of those problems.
Yeah, So we start with one. We go to the foundation just to
make sure the posture is correct.Make sure they're in an athletic position so
(37:07):
when they're swinging to the right andswinging to the left, they can maintain
that spine angle and find the bottompoint of their swing, So we like
to start there making sure they're maintainingthe posture. Not a lot of people
say lifting their head up. Wesay maintaining that spine angle. Sometimes it's
okay to let the head lift throughthe follow through a little bit. Also
(37:29):
tempo. Sometimes going too fast, yeah, will cause where your shoulders get
out in front of where they're supposedto be an impact and you can't reach
the bottom of your circle. Sorelates to a top shot, the heavy
shot. Usually we like to referto maybe you're casting the club a little
bit like a fishing pole on theway down, so your radius gets long,
or you're not transferring your weight overto that front foot. Okay,
(37:52):
so let me just go back toone, the keep your head down concept.
That buddy of mine tell me thatearlier this year on a shot that
I had. He said, keepyour head down. Like glared at him,
like, tell me to keep myhead down. But that is a
common phrase you'll hear from a bunchof people. Is that a misspeak?
It can be. You know, some people that keep their head down don't
(38:13):
rotate through the shot because it's theirhead and neck is restricting their body to
keep turning. So for some peopleit's a great thought. You know,
everybody has a little bit of adifferent mental thought. It's something to try,
but in reality your head is goingto come up. Yeah. Let's
go to another one that is againjuxtaposed the slice, which for a right
handed player is the ball that goesto your right it bananas from left to
(38:36):
right, or the hook which goesto the left for a right handed player.
Are the problems similar are they vastlydifferent fixes? So again we've heard
Kinna say many times, the shapein trajectory is in our hands. So
if if someone has a curve problem, we'll usually start with a grip,
just making sure they got their handson the club in a neutral position.
(38:57):
Usually the left hand. We liketo look at that base knuckle up on
the top quadront of the grip.Get the right hand in balance with that,
so the v between your thumb andyour point your fingers going towards your
right shoulder. Then we like tojust look at how are you releasing your
hands and forearms through impact. Ifa lot of times, if it's too
late, there's not enough rotation withyour hands in the club face, that
(39:19):
clubface is going to stay open. The ball is going to go to the
right, if your hands are alittle bit quick, if going faster than
your body, that's going to turninto a hook. So again, really
paying attention to your grip if you'vegot a curve problem, and making sure
that you're either rotating a little fasteror a little slower, depending on what
the ball is doing. Let's talkabout the most common putting faults. What
do you see? What is yourinitial fix or look when somebody comes to
(39:43):
you with a putting issue. Ifirst start with set up all the time.
Usually you're going to correct a lotof things in that setup, making
sure that their eye lines a littlecloser to the ball. Usually see people
standing too far away, making surethe ball position is just in front of
their center so they can hit thatball on the upward stroke, getting square
with their feet in their shoulders, and then from there just really trying to
(40:05):
feel the big muscles move the putterand trying to take the hands out of
it. Uh. Pitching and chipping. Now that's a different shot, but
they're fairly similar, and many peoplestruggle with having a smooth approach to either
or both of those. So let'sgo there for a moment. Yeah,
so I would say chipping again,You're getting your feet a little closer together,
you're getting your weight a little bitmore on your left foot, and
(40:29):
you're really trying to take your handsout of it. Kind of think of
if I take it back to eighto'clock, I want to take it through
to four o'clock, trying to keepthat symmetrical on both sides. Pitching again,
usually people select too much loft. They want to hit every shot with
their sixty degree or'us. Maybe takinga sand wedge or a gap wedge and
making a little smaller, more controlledswing that can have that good tempo to
(40:52):
it, and then just having aplan again, trying to get the ball
on the green, thinking in theirhead as quickly as possible, and then
have it roll to the hole. That's half of it. They get worried
about their technique and they lose feel. And part of that technique that I'm
sure you see many, many timesis when they are trying to scoop it
because they believe that's how the ballgoes in the air. But the club
(41:13):
is built to do that for you. That's why you want to somewhat take
the hands out and use the shoulders. Use the shoulder, so that's where
you want to make that descending blow. So you're hitting the ball down the
turf. Just let the loft ofthe club do the work for you,
no need to help it last oneand this is not enough time for it.
Here, but a basic bunker conceptthat some people just don't get until
(41:34):
they visit with you. Yeah,so again having a plan when you go
into that bunker again, we liketo say, look at the three l's,
look at the lip, look atthe lie, look at the length
of the shot to select the rightclub. Then two, you want to
slightly open the club to create alittle bit more bounce. You're going to
position the ball slightly forward of yourcenter, take maybe a half a backswing
using your wrist action, and thenhit one to two inches behind the ball
(41:58):
and finish high. Last element tothat. There's a club in many people's
bag that has an s on it, sandwich. That's the only club they
bring into a bunker. Maybe youwere talking about choices going into the bunker.
Sure you could use you know,a gap wedge, a sand wedge,
a lobwedge. A lot of peoplehave different bounces on the bottom of
their club. Based on the liethey have in the bunkers. Or maybe
(42:20):
you're playing a golf course that hasreally soft sand, you're going to open
up the club a little bit more. You're playing a golf course that has
firm sand, you're gonna take maybea little less, little less bounce.
Yeah, Oh, there's so much. We don't have time. Travis Becker

I'm Paul Brown and joining us live. Nice to have Bobby Stricker.
He normally on the phone, buttonight's sitting right here and with us and
(46:09):
Bobby. Dennis and I were talkingbefore the show began, and obviously you
talked to him and a lot ofother people about your game and how you're
progressing and those kinds of things. Why don't you relate the story about something
that you guys talked about in termsof how you're doing and how to look
at it. Yeah, Grandpa isobviously a huge part of this process and
(46:36):
very thankful for it. And yes, we talk a lot on the road
when I'm out on the road, which is awesome. I get texted him
all the time. But yeah,I just came back from a golf tournament
in Dallas, and yeah, he'salways giving little tidbits of info. The
conversations never last long, he stopstexting me, but he's always given little
tidbits of info. And it iscool because the people that I have around,
(47:02):
they're they're looking at things a lotdifferently. It seems like then I'm
looking at them. And yeah,he did. He tested me after my
fourth round. I played really wellthis this past week, finished eighteenth even
par for the whole tournament. Andyeah, he told me he was like
one shot each nine, So oneshot lower each nine. I played four
(47:24):
rounds, I would have been insecond place alone. So yeah, him
pointing that out, I would havenever even thought to look at anything like
that, but it does. Itputs, It puts what I'm doing into
perspective. Yeah, and I'm reallyclose. One of the things that we
(47:45):
and I'm sure you've heard this fromGrandpa many times. I'm gonna start calling
him that too. Is that aboutbeing comfortable being uncomfortable? And you can't
get there until you know you're inthose tournaments and you didn't play as much
growing up because you're playing tennis. So is that part? Do you continue
to see that evolution of being comfortablewhen it gets a little uncomfortable? Yes.
(48:10):
I work with a mental coach andshe's actually in town, uh right
now, And I just got homea couple of days ago and got to
speak with her in person and wewere literally talking about this yesterday. And
yeah, each tournament, each timeyou step out on that tea, the
first tea, you're you're learning thingsabout how your body reacts and yeah,
(48:35):
it's all it's yes, Yeah,like you're you're just trying to find the
place mentally where you know you canperform your best. And for me,
it's like in a super peaceful placeand like it's very cool. Each tournament
I go to, just trying toget there, Like each each day is
(48:57):
going to be different. I'm goingto feel different, might be a little
restless some days, compared to others. Some days might be just super easy,
but knowing like where I perform mybest. Yes, it's like a
game. It's like a game insidethe game, like trying to trick myself
when those days are hard, totry to get back to that peaceful place
(49:20):
might have butchered that eccent well. But I would also make an assumption,
which is dangerous, that you andIzzy aren't wired the same way that way,
nor are you and your dad oryou and your mom. Correct,
it's all different, no, verydifferent, and that's something that I'm was
very hard when I first started out, Like, yeah, I've watched my
dad do this my whole entire life, and I've seen one way of doing
(49:42):
things, and I thought when Igot out here and started doing this,
like that was it. Yeah, and then it wasn't working for me.
So I'm like, Okay, well, what's what's happening? And yeah,
have all these wonderful people around methat have done it, My Grandpa's done
it, And you have to findwhat works for you, and sometimes it
is, I know it is.It's different for everyone and that's a continual
(50:06):
process. But yes, I'm veryI feel good about the path that I'm
on. Yeah, when all ofthese experiences that you're going through and all
of these things that we're talking about, are you getting the feeling even more
all the time that you can compete? Yes? Yeah, yeah, Yeah.
(50:27):
This season has been really I've learnedthat I can. Yeah, I've
just had this realization that I canthis season. I think that has to
do with the fact that it's mysecond full year doing this. I kind
of own what I'm doing. Ifeel like now the travel part just like
(50:50):
little things too, like the traveling, getting to certain places, taking care
of myself on the road, andthen seeing success in my golf and kind
of knowing and realizing like the stuffI'm doing at home, the preparation,
the training, that stuff is.I'm I'm in a good space there.
(51:14):
So yeah, this this season hasbeen really fun. I took a step
back status wise. You know,I'm not on the Epsent Tour this summer,
and I was last summer and thatwas a huge bummer and the end
of last summer was a huge bummer. But I know things all work out
for a reason, and I'm I'mreally seeing that right now this summer.
Yeah, We've we've you know,we talked about it, and Dennis talks
(51:37):
about the pillars of this. Butfaith is big for you in the game,
and I'm sure that that supplies youa support system as you're playing,
because golf is a game of failureand you have to be able to lean
into something. Oh my, Yeah, for sure. It's a huge part
of my story in golf, butit's it's my life really and it has.
(51:59):
Yeah, last summer was really hard. I've told this to a few
people. This summer, I thinkI cried like eight days straight. Q
school sucked and then I turned twentyfive the same week, so it was
like and I struggled with birthdays anyway. So yeah, during that week,
I was like, what the heckis going on? I should I still
(52:22):
be doing this? Just was reallyhard on myself. And then, like
I said, this season, yes, it's because I've seen maybe a little
bit of success, but I knowthat where I'm at is where God wants
me. Yeah, and I fullhard, fullheardly believe that. Dennis,
what do you see in development ofBobby, Well, it's just what she's
(52:45):
saying. You know, her lifewas tennis and golf is not a partner
game. It's a lonely game, and she's just getting to be by and
learn how to live with herself. And we have some things that we chat
about. We've got this buddy thatgoes along with us everywhere, and we
(53:07):
firmly believe that that's it. Sowe put our faith in that and go
about doing our thing. And that'swhat she's doing right now. But she's
experienced now what we talked about before, that uncomfortable feeling and you got to
get through that, and all ofa sudden you start building up. And
no, she's got a good fivesix seven years ahead of her that she
(53:29):
can goes and have to be hurryup and do it. Yeah, you
know, she can move along andhey, worst case scenario, she has
to come back to this terrible placehere. All right, So Wichitah next,
right, that's your next tournament stop? That is next week? And
then is that's the last tournament foryou to tune up for Q School which
(53:52):
is middle of August out west.Yes, yeah, I go. I
leave Tuesday and play next week inWichita on the w A and then yeah,
Q School starts August twenty second,Yeah or so, yes, that's
definitely the mentality when I step out, especially last week and then into this
(54:15):
tournament next week is just I thinktoo. It's it's kind of given me
a little freedom in these tournaments,a little bit where I like, they're
not really life or death. II the beginning of the season, I
definitely was a little bit more stressedout in these tournaments, and I'm really
taking them as like they are. They're their practice for for the big dog
(54:37):
that's coming. And in the endof August, my dad's gonna come with
me. We were just talking abouttravel plans a couple of days ago,
him and I. He's come outwith me the last I've done it three
times. This will be my fourthtime. So that's always really fun.
We have a really fun trip. It's like one hundred and twenty degrees and
very very miserable, but yeah, that's it's always a super cool time just
(55:01):
to be out there with my dadand we have fun. Good Bobby,
we got to wrap it up.We thank you for stopping by. But
you know what, where she's headed. She's going out to the golf.
