The lt AT Hour.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Let's Talk Nascar with your host Todd Bayling, co hosts
Brian Schmidt, PJ Newdleman, and producer Dangerous Dan Margetta. Call
the show anytime at four one four four two one
seventy nine oh one. And now the creator and host
of the fastest hour in radio, Todd the Bailing.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
And Good morning everybody. The final event of the three
contracted races in Chicago. I hope if you really liked it,
that you're there and we'll enjoy the final one because
the chances that they're going back there, I think are
(00:56):
not very good. Just a thought on the man. Hello,
Todd Bailing in a neighboring community up in Wisconsin. I'm
going to start by saying hello to PJ today because
she and I are the only two of the four
of us that are not actually in Chicago. Hi, PJ.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Hey, Hey, husband did leave this morning though, for slingers,
so he's getting ready for the Nationals.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
It's that time of year, isn't it? All right? That said,
and welcome to the sweet Sweet overlooking the racetrack that
Brian Schmidt and Dan Margeta are at right now.
Speaker 5 (01:33):
Hello, gentlemen, Good morning, welcome to downtown Chicago. And like
you said, this will probably be the last one. Just
judging by what we've seen walking through the grounds here
the last two days, it's not quite at the hype
level it was at in twenty three and twenty four.
The weather's been pretty good. It was pretty hot yesterday
but there was no rain. But overall, I just think
(01:54):
the vibe you get from it is, yeah, this is
probably last one, right Dan.
Speaker 6 (01:58):
Yeah, I think it's kind of like when he ran
the Collus the third year.
Speaker 7 (02:00):
Everybody was Okay, we're here, but it kind of stre
running the course, and it's kind of the feeling you
get around here. A lot of people are talking me
into going back to the Oval next year. But all
in all, I mean, it's the whole concept. I think
it's still a cool concept, and when we look back
at it, it's gonna be kind of a cool thing.
Speaker 6 (02:15):
We did it, it was cool, but it was kind of
time to move on.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
And among the things that make it seem like it
is the last one is a lot less stands up.
Just looking out our window here, there were really Dick's
grand stands before. Now there are three. The pit side
suites are gone. There used to be all like Chlais
above the pits. Those are completely gone. The only thing
there now is the stage that Zach Brown played on
(02:38):
last year across the way on the front stretch. Those
seats are minimalized a lot more so you see a
lot less of that and then what you saw over
the years before. Even the Media Center was moved out
of the Art Center and is in the parking ramp,
parking garage under the ground, which when it was hot
as was yesterday, that actually was a good thing. But
as long as it doesn't rain, it'll be good. That's prestige,
(02:58):
just isn't it. What are the hell in a parking remp.
Speaker 7 (03:02):
Yeah, I mean they put carpeting in there and fans
of stuff they worked. Yeah, And people that were there
said the super Bowl does the same thing, So.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
Yeah, yeah, I don't know how much. I mean, it's
a little darker. It's not mean. But when you go
from the Arts Center, which was you know, a really
cool place like up in the air you look out
the windows, there's no windows in this parking garage because
you're under the ground. So it's overall it's a completely
different vibe from what we've had before. Drivers are still
excited about it. I mean SVG has got to be
(03:29):
really excited about it.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
SVG, Wow, we haven't heard much about him this weekend before.
Before I get into that, let me tell you that
the race is going to be televised on TNT and
True TV today, also Max and Sling TV. I don't
really know what that all is. I guess those are
just pure streaming services. I guess right. The green is
(03:54):
at one twenty this afternoon, and I know it was
ninety five there yesterday. It was not quite that hot
in the balmy Milwaukee. But what's the weather forecast today? Guys?
Speaker 7 (04:05):
Well, not as hot for one thing. And yesterday was
a hot race that was hot. It's probably about ten
to fifteen degrees cooler today right now. There's no rain here.
They're talking some may come in now. This race has
been effected by rain every year.
Speaker 6 (04:16):
Every other years.
Speaker 7 (04:17):
Every other years, it was like, oh, we're okay on Sunday,
note rain, then we get dumped on this year. But
it's kind of expecting rain today and so far hasn't
been here.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
Right now, the forecast by the hours is like three o'clock,
so with a one twenty start, you're going to be
getting near the end of it by around three o'clock.
It was bright sunshine this morning. Now it's kind of
filtered clouds, probably in the upper eighties right now.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
All right, Well LTN presents SVG today. The polesitter is
Sean Shane. We're old friends and I don't know his name,
Shane ben Gizbergen. He did eighty eight point three three
eight miles per hour, which is about almost the same
(04:56):
as his time eighty nine seconds to get around that place.
It's a two point two mile road course. Michael McDowell
will start alongside on the front row. He is like,
definitely fat, almost a half a second faster, but on
a two point two mile road course. I don't know
how significant a half a second.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
Yea.
Speaker 7 (05:17):
McDonell a pretty good road racer. And I don't think,
you know, Van Gisburg is gonna walk away with this,
and I'm not sure. I mean last year he thought
the same thing. He crashed out early and it had
a real bad race. I think there's enough guys here
that can kind of give him a run for the money.
And mcdonwell, I think is one of them. And look
at the starting lineup, you go through. Where are the
hender cars.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah, they're they're on the other end. Oh, but rather
than look for them, why don't we say something nice
about Carson Josvar and his lips. He starts third. I mean,
that's that's pretty good for a road course. The guy's
good everywhere. Now Reddick fourth, uh and Risco fifth. Now
(05:55):
there are some names up there that you would expect
to be there. It seems like to me there are
some names missing from the front, like Dan just mentioned,
like the Hendrik cars, and wait a minute, let me
check the sympathy department. Anybody there. Nope, nope, nope, nobody home.
Of course they won this last year with Bowman, just
(06:16):
to keep that in mind, But it.
Speaker 7 (06:17):
Is odd that all four cars had some kind of
damage down in the qualifying thing that they have to
go to backup car or start at the rear in
the field.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
Larson, Bowman, Elliott and.
Speaker 5 (06:28):
Byron Wirona the far and practice and defense. It was
right at the end of practice and I was over
in that corner. It's corner. I think it's corner ten
As I look out the window here and I was
in the stands, and he came through there, and all
of a sudden you hear this god awful noise and
you see the Purple Vicinity banner getting ripped down the
side of the wallway as he takes it down. And
then then I looked at the camera on the screen
and you could see he bent the tolling on the car,
(06:50):
and they weren't able to get it fixed in time
for qualifying.
Speaker 6 (06:52):
And Denny Hamlin didn't even make a laugh.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
He blew Now, yeah, Hamlin made it out a turn one,
turn two down Lakeshore Drive and turned onto h was
the Columbus that comes down back towards turned six and
blew it up right there and never never even made
a laugh.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Apartment, please check in, No nobody there either.
Speaker 6 (07:10):
All right? How bought some good feel good stories.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
How about our own Josh Bilickian in sixty six car,
the car everybody thought was gonna go home. We had
a car going home for the first time in seven
years at a non Daytona five hundred race. We had
bumping going on and one car left and it was
not the sixty sixth like everybody thought.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
He all qualified a lot of cars, yep, And it
was right in the middle of qualifying between the two
groups that went out. I stumbled up, came upon Joshua
was standing there and I said, so where do you stand?
I didn't have a screen in front of me. And
he goes, we're in the show. And he had this
massive smile on his face. He go, we all qualified
a twenty three to eleven car. I'm like, holy cow,
that's big. He goes, yes. And when you look at
(07:44):
that car, he points to his car, he says, that
is our own engine that we had someone build for us.
It's not a least engine. That is our own car.
You know, we didn't buy a car from somebody else.
He goes, that is everything we have, and our budget
is like next to nothing. And as he's talking about
that car, Along walks up and Carl Along looks like
a guy straight out of the eighties from Nascar. His
shirt is sweated through, his pants are dirty, his hair
(08:06):
is messy. You know, that's not what you see these
days in Nascar, not at all.
Speaker 6 (08:10):
Sounds like my husband. Yeah, yeah, but he was happy
as could be.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
The biggest man I smell. I felt so great for
those guys because that's the type of stuff we don't
have a NASCAR enough anymore.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
I would agree, by the way, just for the excitement factor.
Catherine Legg is in the race today, and she has
not had a very good time of it so far,
and from what I have noticed, maybe it's just my imagination,
but it seems like a lot of people do a
lot of handwringing for her. It's not her fault, it's
(08:45):
just not her fault. Well, I don't know why we're
bothering to go through all that, because, I mean, we're
not blind. She does some well, she didn't have enough practice,
that's not her fault. Well, yet she's still in the race.
We have a certain an expectation, don't we.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
I mean, she succeeded in other forms of motorsports, unlike
a lot of the other females that are racing right now.
I mean, she won races at IMSA, she was right
right there in the old cart things. She had a
hillacious wreck at Road America back in the day, and
then she's not in the greatest equipment here, So I
don't really know what people expect now. On the ovals
where she was getting involved with other wrecks that I see,
she just doesn't know her limits today. I think she'll
(09:22):
be a little bit more in her element. She'll be
this is what she's a little more used to doing.
And BJ McLeod's stuff is it's all children's equipment there,
so it's not the worst equipment in the world.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Well, good luck to her and especially to our friend.
Speaker 7 (09:38):
The surprise, I think the surprise was that the twenty
three to eleven car Corey him was the car that
went home. I don't think anybody had that on their
Bengal cars.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
No, but he had an issue and that righty, yeah,
straight the tires and bent the toe length of the
car was not good.
Speaker 7 (09:53):
But I think Catherine Lake had an issue too, and
that car was bent a little bit too.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
H correct, But she just drove the heck out of it.
I mean she improved her Both her and Josh improve
their time by several tenths of a second to get
themselves into a position where they're going to make their aid.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
We're glad you're tuned in. The boys are in Chicago.

Speaker 10 (12:12):
Flag football. I don't get this.
Speaker 13 (12:14):
The NFL was really proactive in getting flag football into
the LA Olympics. If I'm the Dolphins owner, am I
letting Tyreek Hill play?
Speaker 14 (12:24):
No?

So telling you that SVG was the polesitter for today.
That's just chapter one. Chapter two was yesterday. He won
the poll for the Infinity race held in the afternoon. There,
I'm not We'll have to tie in the Connor zilla
Ish part of the story a little later. But Connor
(13:03):
Zillis started in the back and I mean in the
back and came through and was actually leading the race
without too much time to go. You know, it was tough.
It's very difficult to watch two things at the same time.
And I'm glad I have a previous channel button when
the Brewers are on and I'm flipping back and forth
and keeping an eye on things, and it all happens
(13:23):
at the same time Zillish was leading. What does SVEG
really needed was a late race caution, and I'll be darned,
but there it was, and on a restart, Connor's zillash
just I think he was out experienced as what he was.
And and by the way, I think it was the
(13:45):
new improved SVG that beat him, because Sean never really
raced as full body contact as he had to learn
when he got to NASCAR, and there was contact and
he did get out front and he won the thing
and it was an amazing performance. And he gets out
of the car, does the interview, kicks the ball, does
(14:08):
all that stuff, and then goes straight to the hospital.
It was ninety five degrees. His cool suit failed. You know,
that's a rubberized suit that they run cooler water through
and it works great when the water circulates. When it doesn't,
you are in ninety five degrees in a car that's
probably thirty degrees warmer than that, with a rubber.
Speaker 6 (14:31):
Suit on and full of water that's getting hot.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
Yeah. It's like how it's like being in a hot shower.
Speaker 6 (14:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah. It hasn't been a real good run for him lately.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Is it, Brian, No, poor Shaneman. I mean, think about
his two wins this year. He won at Mexico, and
everybody else was getting the plague, so he got sick
in the car and sick in his seat, and now
he comes here and he overheats himself. So I think
he's hoping for a uneventful day today. I mean, I'll
tell you it was hot. I drank more water yesterday
than I have in a while. And I mean the
(15:00):
breeze was great. If you were able to get up
to the breeze when you're down on the ground on
all that blacktop. It was a it was a scorcher
down there, So I can't imagine what it was like
in those cars for those guys. But SPG never made
it to the media center for the post race presser
because he's after the Victor Lane thing was over. He
went and got fluids and he should be good to
(15:20):
go today though everything all the updates I've seen, he'll
he'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Yees, seven point thirty. He got out last night. I
mean that's you know, he really had to be replenished
and get a good night's sleep because today he's got
the same story. Although it's nice to know it's a
little cooler there. It's also interesting though that you guys
report that there could be rain. I mean, this has
been the three race in the rain Chicago schedule, brought
(15:48):
to you by Lori Lightfoot, former mayor who really didn't
have a lot of positive things happen in her administration,
with the possibility that this was it. But now we
can move to the next name, which I briefly mentioned,
Connor Zillish. Is this a good week for Connor Zillish
(16:11):
or what not? Only did he show everybody really something?
They already knew that he's one hell of a race
car driver at the age of howl. Is he nineteen?
Speaker 15 (16:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (16:22):
I believe so eighteen nineteen half. Let's put it this way,
he's half the age of SVG that he is right
now due for quite a promotion because Daniel Suarez was
told officially that he won't have his contract renewed next
(16:43):
year eighteen.
Speaker 5 (16:44):
His nineteenth birthday comes up on July twenty second.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
He's eighteen. What a career? What Brian, I should have
asked you this and I think I know the answer.
But he's a His start came in what.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
Ah, his success came from IMSA. I mean, he's a
twenty four hours of Daytona winner. He is a Before that,
he was in a Transammer series. I saw him at
Road America two years ago in the trans End. Before that,
he ran like carts over in Europe against a couple
of F one guys that are currently running F one
guys and he beat them. So that's kind of where
where you know, his name got on the radar. And
I remember at that transam race that wrote America a couple
years ago. He's in that seven car and I saw
(17:22):
him hustle it through Canada Corner and I kept thinking
he was gonna crash and he didn't, and I was told, then, hey,
watch his kid.
Speaker 6 (17:27):
He's something to watch.
Speaker 7 (17:28):
And of course you don't believe it right away, but
now you start seeing the results and yeah, they're right.
Speaker 5 (17:33):
Yeah. And last year, last year he won the twenty
four hours of Daytona and he won the twelve hours
of Sebring. I mean with team drivers, of course, but
he's able to keep the car up there. You know,
m X five Cup. He's done a lot of that stuff.
And I think the biggest thing is he's got Red
Bull backing him. I mean, that's that's big. Red Bull
hasn't been in NASCAR in a while, and now they're
making them making their appearance back. I think that has
(17:53):
a lot to do with him moving up the ladder
as well as he's got the backing and back.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
It up even further to that, I mean, because you
have to get your start and you have to get
the money. And he actually won a one hundred and
ten dollars scholarship in the MASD to MX five Cup
shootout competition back in twenty twenty two and then he
also earned eighty five thousand as the runner up in
that championship as well that year. So you got to
win to earn the money to be able to seed
(18:16):
your next step, and he's done a really good job
of doing that.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
My first scholarship was for how much?
Speaker 4 (18:22):
One hundred and ten thousand dollars?
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Okay, well that was help.
Speaker 7 (18:27):
And now they haven't even made the announcement he's gonna
go to the Cup car yet everybody's he's gonna take
that and we'll see what you can do there.
Speaker 15 (18:34):
Now.
Speaker 7 (18:35):
Look at Trackhouse though, too, I mean, are they what
they used to be? And I'm not sure. You know,
we're gonna see what it's gonna be if he gets
in that car and they do put him in there
to see how he can stack up against some pretty
stiff competition. The competition level is still the best in
the Cup Series.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
And I think Ti Ty or ty Kibbs would be
the one to say that because he won anything and
everything he was racing until he got to the Cup
Series and ye came to a screeching halt.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
Don't rush him too fast.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
Yeah, But when I took that attitude with our old
friend ed Kluka. He would tell me there's nothing like
getting your feet wet, you know, feet to the fire.
Now get him in there. Well, you know, sometimes I
think that that's good for some drivers, and some drivers
it isn't. Zillish has shown so much talent that it
(19:22):
seems to me he is a can't miss. No, I'm not.
I'm not some sort of a you know, genius here.
It doesn't take a genius to see the kind of
talent that this young man has, and especially at the
age he is. But didn't we say the same thing
about Ty Gibbs And look who's not having a very
(19:43):
good career in Cup so far. Cue the sympathetis not
too much, you know.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
Another one, come to think of it, who just got
moved up in the Exfinity series. Dan and I were
talking about it in the room the other day. Is
Williams Walach is really struggling in that Exfinity car. Didn't
see that coming easy either, Dominant he was in the
ARCA cars.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Yep, the itches. Remember they were both coming up at
the same time. One went one direction, the other one
kind of just kind of floating along. I guess we're
so happy you're tuned in. This is the Chicago Street
Course two point two mile special edition of LTN. We're
going to take a break and be right back.

able to hear him swoosh by. They did the same
thing yesterday morning and we were out in the course
when they went out there, and there's three of them.
We have David Reagan, who are the other drivers.
Speaker 7 (23:43):
Then the Chevy one and Brent Cruz in the NASCAR prototype.
Reagan's driving the Ford one.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
Yep. And they sound like, I don't know, they almost
sound like a sewing machine. For people that remember what
you know, they you know, zipping noise the sewing machine makes.
It's kind of what it sounded like when they're coming by.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
This is the bend over part right here. Here's what's
coming in the future.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
Well, I mean, so if we have an electric race
and they're all lined up and everybody's excited to see
this race, what do you say to get the race started?
Because you don't need to start your engines. All you
do is push the pedal to go forward. Everybody switches.
Oh my god, the technology is cool to see what
(24:25):
they're doing, but it's not my cup of tea and.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Their drivers unplug your car, Yes, everybody, get ready. Maybe
they'll have maybe the real electric race cars will have
those genuine chargers sound alike noise makers in them where
it sounds like it's a real engine. Soon they'll come by.
(24:48):
Oh everyone will be so impressed. Good god, what the
hell's happening? All right? We we We've gushed about Connor
Zillish now. But the other side of the coin there
is Daniel Suarez. I think it seems to me that
he is as likable a kid as you'll ever find
in a race car. It's fun, it's easy to root
(25:10):
for him. He's he's just a decent guy, and he's
got such a wonderful attitude. It sounds as though he
knew about this six months ago, even though recently he said, well,
you know, next year is up in the areaet. I
don't know if he was hoping maybe that he would
(25:31):
win a race in Mexico, maybe that would have, you know,
put him in the playoffs, and it's hard to replace
a driver if he actually put his car in the playoffs.
I don't know if that was the case, but I
do feel like Suarez has won races and has earned
his place. Now that's part of it. The other part
(25:54):
of it is do you bring money. And the rumor
is is that that guy has Carlos Slim money, who
is the richest man in Mexico. What the hell does
he own the Mexican Telephone Company or something? I forgot
the story, but you know, if you've got that kind
(26:15):
of money, you are still going to be able to
find a ride. Some believe that he won't find a
cup ride and you'll have to maybe take a step
down to a junior Exfinity right.
Speaker 6 (26:27):
In Zillich moves up.
Speaker 7 (26:30):
That Ady eight Expinity ride is a pretty darn good
ride to have in that series if you're going to go,
and that's I mean some takers maybe going there.
Speaker 6 (26:36):
You could tell the Swarrest thing.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
If you ever watched that Netflix series that has the
last half playoff races last year, he was one of
the drivers. Because he's in the playoffs, you could kind
of see there that there was a bit of a
disconnect with him in that team that I don't think
he thought he was getting the best of equipment, and
I don't think they were as confident a him as
they should have been. So you can kind of tell
the writing was on the wallet. He was probably going
to get moved out there.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
He's thirty three years old too, so you got to
figure as far as putting in an Exfinity ride. If
if Chevy doesn't have anybody in the pipeline they want
to bring up, then maybe you'd put them in there
for a year or two. But you know, those Infinity rides,
we talk all the time about different teams bringing people
up and how there's kids in the pipeline waiting to go.
You know, right now, Tristan mcgee' is the young one
that's in the in the Chevy pipeline, but he's got
(27:18):
a couple of years to go yet. But I mean
so I don't know that. I don't know if Suarez's
got like a permanent home where he's gonna be able
to stay all the time.
Speaker 7 (27:24):
And then those Exfinity teams that are bringing people up
also have a veteran driver on that team to kind
of keep them in line too.
Speaker 5 (27:29):
Right, And that's for justin a guy er fits for
junior motorsports right now. But you are pretty interesting to see, boss, really,
don't you think?
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Yeah, Daniel Suarez still has Carlos slim money supposedly, So
what is better? What is more important? Would you want
to go in a top flight UH Exfinity Series ride
with a capability of winning races and not making any money.
(27:57):
You just don't make the purses are about ten percent
of what the Cup races are, or we use that
money to take a inferior. I'm telling you you can
find a ride in the Cup Series. The question is
what do you want to do. Do you want to
be a back marker? He doesn't deserve to be a
(28:18):
back marker now.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
And he kind of will go Ready, Remember he drove
that Gunk Brothers car for a while, that ninety six
car and just ended appear. So and what's open in
the Cup Series? I'm not sure there's a whole lot
of rides going to be open this year. Is It's
it's kind of slim Pickens right now, unless unless you
bump somebody out, you know, don't forget all that char.
Speaker 6 (28:35):
Of thing's going on.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
What's you know there could be some musical chairs going
on there that we don't even know about, that's going
on behind the scenes right now.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
I love that Dan Carlos slim Pickens. I'm gonna I'm
gonna put write you down as having credit for that. Yeah,
even back markers might be hard to find at this point.
So we've kind of just discovered that he's going to
probably take a decent and anything that Junior puts out
(29:02):
there runs up front, So that would be a good
place for him to keep his name out front and
so people and car owners can see that he still
has the talent to do it. Remembering what the great
Junior Johnson told us on this program back when we
did our first ever, we did a remote from Boring
(29:24):
Bob's Bar, and we had Junior Johnson on as the guest,
and that's where he told us that he always thought
that a driver was at his peak, in his prime,
at thirty two years old, and I have always kept
that in mind, although Ed pointed out that, you know,
since then, it seems to have gotten younger and younger,
(29:47):
but the talent level, you know, based talent and experience
and everything put together. I will still say myself that
I'm going to believe Junior Johnson that thirty two, so
he's passed us prime is the whole point there, I guess,
And I don't worry about him. He'll be back. We'll
just have to watch his career. We're very happy you're
(30:09):
tuned in on this Chicago Street Course race version of LTN,
and we'll be right.
Speaker 1 (30:15):

Speaker 14 (32:49):
We Dazed at eight am on Fox Sports nine.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
Welcome back. Another big news I that happened this week.
I think it's a big news item. A guy that
our late friend Eddie Kluka used to call Steve Neumar
because he just couldn't get that Newmark name downright. Steve
(33:16):
Newmark his name is, and he was the president of
Rausch then the president. I don't know. I think he
never was just playing Ralsh. He was the roush Fenway
president until Kaslowski came along. And he has been running
raush freaking Keaslowski Racing for fifteen years and he is
(33:38):
leaving at the end of this season. He's going to
go to the University of North Carolina Athletic department. He'll
be working with Bill Belichick, who and his lovely youngster
either way that what had I think about Steve Newmark
(33:59):
and his and his effect on the Roush program. He
cost Eddie hated him, and I never really understood why
he cost Rausch Fenway. At least three drivers that we
know here, Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards, and particularly Matt Kenseth
and probably Tim a Jeski too, but that's another story.
(34:22):
He was not easy to work with, and he made it.
He kind of left doors open for you don't want
to be here, just go right out the door. And
you know, I'm not sure Jack Rausch liked that. He
liked keeping his drivers around. He was pissed off when
Matt left, I know that much. But he leaves. So
(34:46):
the next question is who's going to take over? And
immediately some people say, wow, Tim Sindrick is available. Yeah,
think about that, would you? Tim Sindrick, the guy who
ran Penske and actually fired Brad Keslowski. Yeah, maybe maybe Brad?
What what hire Tim Syndrick? No, No, that isn't gonna happen.
(35:10):
There is an internal rumor that I hear about second
hand at Rausch that Brad Keselowski is prepared to take
over the reins of the company, which would mean he
would end his driving days now. I don't think he
wants to retire until he wins a race. And I
(35:34):
think they're not going to say very much about who
they're gonna name as someone to take over for Steve
Newmark until at the end of this season, and we'll
see if Keslowski has made the playoffs one more time
by and he's gonna need to win at this point.
I think, so, you know, a big day. Newmark was
an unpopular president anybody that worked there, Nobody that worked
(36:00):
there had very high praise for him, with the possible
exception I have the guy that wrote the checks, and
that would be Raush himself. But Newmark moves on. Do
we have any thoughts?
Speaker 7 (36:11):
I always thought when he came in there, I mean,
Ralsh was very racer oriented. It seemed like, you know,
a lot of Wisconsin guys were there because you know,
he raced so much up here, and he went down
and he kind of did the same thing, and I
thought I always saw him kind of as like a
suit that came into the racer oriented team and kind
of was trying to turn it back into a like
a sue oriented.
Speaker 6 (36:28):
Teeth like he didn't understand the racer concept.
Speaker 7 (36:31):
He understood the money concept and all the other stuff
that a lot of the racer guys don't want to
deal with because they just don't deal with that kind
of stuff.
Speaker 6 (36:37):
So that's what I always thought.
Speaker 7 (36:38):
That kind of to me, it kind of disappointed me
when he came in there because I thought Ralsh was
a lot higher when he was there, and you know,
it turned into what it is now. It's kind of
coming back now to two teams, but for what it
was and what it could have been, I thought it
would have been better.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Yeah, he didn't have the vision, I think, to look
at big picture and how you have your own development pipeline. Instead,
he approached it almost like the auto dealerships do or
the automotive manufacturers, how they downsize in order to get
the bottom line to where they wanted it to be.
So you're basically cutting off your nose to spite your
face in order to make it look good on the books.
(37:13):
But then you have basically just gutted your program to
be able to develop and continue to run with the
top guns as you continue to grow.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
One time they had a lot of teams. They're fourteen
teams between trucks the Bush Series or the Exfinity Series
and Cup they're down to three teams.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
Yep. And that's what happens when you have a non
racer that was involved. You know, a non racer, And
we've been saying that all the time and nask business guy. Yeah,
the people that are non racers always end up being
the people that are the demise still out of these
organization because you still need to be a racer. You
need to have a racer's mentality to have a successful program.
And the Richard Childress, Rick Hendricks and the Jack Roschers
(37:56):
of the world were real racers, and when you replace
them with people that are not, it becomes a problem.
Fortunately for Hendrick, you're putting the racers back in there.
You got the Jeff Gordon's in there, you got the
check and ELS's. Those are racers. But the organizations that
put non racers in there are usually mean.
Speaker 6 (38:10):
Remise rout half the feel of the chase.
Speaker 7 (38:13):
They had ten cars, but even the program was just
incredible back in the day.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Beyond that though, it's not so much. I mean, yes,
it is important that you have somebody that gets racing,
but any business if you talk to smart people who
are successful. They'll tell you it's about the people. And
Newmark did not care about the people. He cared more
about the Ledger book black and White. Yes, so if
(38:39):
you have zero FS to give about these people who
are really contributing to the program, but yet collectively we
can shave off, you know how many thousands of dollars
off the program, we're going to go that route. So
I think he was not thinking about the people side
of things. He was instead just thinking about the Ledger.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
I have another kind of an important thought here about that.
We were talking about the fact that in the charter
business that it looks as though Raush is going ralsh
freaking Keslowski rfk need They're going to lose one of
their charters at the end of the year. Wouldn't that
(39:19):
be the exact thing that they need If if Brad
leaves and moves to the front office, Ryan Priest would
take over the sixth car and that charter and that
part of the issue would be kind of solved. They
have they have.
Speaker 4 (39:34):
I think you nailed it right there.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
Yeah, I mean it is headed that direction. It seems
to me lots of stuff going on in the world
of racing, which we're going to tell you all about
when we come back.

Speaker 3 (47:34):
Todd, it was fun to be back, and of course
we were really hoping that the rain that was, you know,
swirling in the area.
Speaker 4 (47:43):
I can't hardly hear you.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
I don't know what happened there. Sorry, you can't hear me.
Speaker 6 (47:50):
Still, No, you're real quiet all of a sudden, I
didn't change a thing. It's okay, Yeah, Flinger. We had
a lot of rain coming up before.
Speaker 7 (48:02):
I'm surprised they got that event in because as much
rain at fell, usually that would wipe something up. But
they were pretty persistent and they got that track dried
and we ran pretty much everything. I think every race
got in, every feature got in, plus a fireworks show
and we're still out of there at a pretty decent time.
Speaker 1 (48:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
The super Late Model winner was Brad J. J. Miller
and the Late Model winner Tyler Shiley.
Speaker 6 (48:24):
So firstly, sly, sorry, fly.
Speaker 3 (48:29):
Can you hear me now? What like you're.
Speaker 7 (48:34):
Quite But Tuesday night we do have a big event
coming up. I mean, the Langer Nationals is probably the
biggest race of the year. At Slinger practicing qualifying qualifying
draw tomorrow and then they race itself on Tuesday, night
pretty still feel the cars looks like I saw thirty
six on the list and some pretty big names.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
Yeah, but even some big fun tonight as well too.
I mean the Midwest Truck Series is going to be
their sixty lap feature for them. There's twenty six trucks
on the entry list and there are a stout bunch
there for that. And then again, like you said, the
qualifying draw for the Nationals will be on Monday. They're
gonna have a big barbecue as well too. And that
trouble and Turn two or Turn four bar, I love
(49:14):
that name that was. Who was a Jeff Storm that
came up with that?
Speaker 7 (49:17):
Yes, Jeff Storm that has claimed the fame that Slinger
is going to be. He ain't the bar and turns
four fantastic. That's a great name to come up with.
And yeah, there's really no Cup guys coming run Night
this this year, but there's a lot of buzz down
here in Chicago for Slinger. We've talked to people, Brian's
talk to some people, and a lot of people know
about Slinger, and I think we may see some people.
Speaker 6 (49:36):

Carson hulsovar what the scoop was? Yesterday? When I was
walking by, He's walking by in hurry, and I said, Carson,
are you coming to slinger? There's been talk about it.
And he spun around real quickly and goes, oh, I'd
love to, but it just didn't work out this year.
Speaker 6 (49:54):
Maybe next year he's scared of rich.
Speaker 3 (49:59):
We'll be right back.

Welcome back LTN Hour. Todd Bailey will be with us again,
hopefully in just a little bit. Got a little technical
error with that. I'm PJ. Noodleman and our two roving reporters,
Dan Margetta and Brian Schmidt are in Chicago for the
NASCAR Street Race today, and you guys have a nice
little headquarters that you're broadcasting from. Tell us a little
(53:59):
bit about that and kind of what you expect to
see today at that race.
Speaker 7 (54:03):
Right we're at the Congress Hotel, which we've been for
pretty much every year they had this race. It's it's
a pretty cool view over the race track and if
you can get if you can get a lake front room,
you gotta be lucky enough to do that. And as
far as today's race, I think it's kind of an
It's got Shane van Gisberg and Pennsylvan as a winner,
but I said last year we had the same thing
and he crashed out early and finished way back there.
(54:24):
I still think it's got a bit of a wildcard
thing to it because I think there are some guys
that that could come out of nowhere to win this race.
If you look at your races, we've had a surprise
wintered Van Gisburg the first year. Nobody really picked Bowman
last year, so I think there's other people who look
at too.
Speaker 5 (54:39):
Yeah, especially with the two Spider cars right up there.
The Spider's looking for a win. They haven't won since
that excuse me victory Daytona several years ago, uh with
Justin Haley. So I wouldn't be surprised to see the
Spier cars up there, and wouldn't be surprised if they
won the race today.
Speaker 7 (54:52):
McDonald's a pretty down good road racer. You kind of
forget that sometimes, but if he the time was right,
I think he can be there. Plus, I think this
race has a little bit of strategy to it as
far as you have to know when you're gonna pit
and everything with tires and all that seems to come
into play. And if it does rain later and after
that could throw whole another wrench in the hold.
Speaker 5 (55:09):
Another wild car guy to look at today driving for
the colleague car today, Will Brown is one of those
Australian supercar guys. He starts nineteenth in the thirteen car.
He ran the Xfinity race yesterday. There's one of your
guys that nobody ever heard of before that'll be running
today that if you're looking for the one guy, he's
really the only no name in the race that nobody
(55:29):
really knows about.
Speaker 4 (55:31):
So let's get to our picks then, Todd, you can
type it in the chat if you'd like to. Oh yeah,
we'll get to that part. And bit Todd, who's your
pick for Chicago? You can type it in and we'll
he's taken SVG as anyone surprised?
Speaker 5 (55:44):
Dan, who's your pick for the race today?
Speaker 1 (55:47):
All right?
Speaker 6 (55:47):
Looking at McDowell, But I'm might leave that to somebody else.
Speaker 7 (55:49):
I might just go out on a limb and take
somebody you never think's gonna win in a road course.
Speaker 6 (55:54):
How about Kyle Busch.
Speaker 7 (55:55):
He's not running that bad, you know, and he seems
everything he will win in a different track when we
wanted you'll expect them to win.
Speaker 6 (56:03):
He'll pull it off. So I'll take that. It's way
out on all end.
Speaker 4 (56:06):
How about you, Brian? Who you got?
Speaker 5 (56:07):
I'm going with Tyler Redick. He's due for a win.
He's been so close to winning this race. He was
right there last year, he was leading this race late
in the going, and he was actually in the contention
and led for a while the first year as well.
So I'm going with Tyler Reddick.
Speaker 4 (56:21):
All right, I'm taking Chris Busher for the win and
we'll see how it all shakes out. A couple of
final notes here, I do want to mention the passing
of Larry Epwright. You guys are probably really familiar with
him throughout the racing community. He unfortunately has passed away.
Speaker 7 (56:36):
So we are Yeah, then a slinger. I'm the number
twenty late model. He's one of those guys that would
show up every week. You know he's always going to
be there. We talked about racers. Larry was a racer.
Speaker 4 (56:46):
Sending condolences to his family and everyone involved with that
team and everybody who knew him and loved him. Also
want to quick mention too, twenty five dollars off Chimney
Mechanics summer inspections. You beat the rush for fall. To
get your chimney inspected. All you need to do is
mention lt N do it by August first, and you'll
(57:07):
get twenty five bucks off the Chimney Mechanics summer inspection.
Speaker 5 (57:11):
One other shut out to Chimney Mechanics. They were putting
up some money. Unfortunately rained out last night. But he's
putting out some money for the late models up at Shano.
They've had a hard time getting in the mount of
late models up there. He put out put up a
bunch of money. He was giving every driver a free
pit pass plus a crew member free pit pass. When
they showed up something, I'll come out. I would assume
he's going to try to redo that again the next
time they're up there. But good, it's awesome him for
(57:33):
helping them try to get that program on the road
up there again.
Speaker 4 (57:36):
And then one other quick note, I would assume that
the lap money is getting developed as well for the
Slinger Nationals.
Speaker 7 (57:42):
That's right, And I'll be electing Hi tonight, Monday and
of course Tuesday, and it's on track as it was
in the past. I have a pretty good total at
the end. You know, you always set these goals that
you want to hit, and they're coming close to hitting
it again.
Speaker 6 (57:56):
So watch for everybody around here. Look for Dan, Casey, Craizeller.
Speaker 7 (58:00):
I'll help out on the days I can, and Dave also,
So the four guys that are pretty much going to
do it all the time. And I know Aaron Bird
and knows guys at the Wisconsin and the auto racing
fans are doing their fantasy deal again where they'll put
the money towards the lap.
Speaker 6 (58:12):
So that's pretty good too.
Speaker 5 (58:14):
That is cool.
Speaker 4 (58:14):
It's twenty dollars minimum per lap, if you'd like to
get on the board, all you gotta do is check
that out when you're at the track. A lot of
folks getting settled into the campground now or the camping area.
It's going to be a great weekend racing tonight at
Slinger and of course the Nationals on Tuesday for Todd Bailing,
Dan Margetta, Brian Schmidt, and our engineer Matt Losi. I'm PJ.
Speaker 5 (58:37):
Newdleman.
