You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radioon a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again, our resident guidesto the outdoors. The Captain banned the
wall Dog. Hey, good SaturdayMorning. This is Wally the wall Dog

(00:33):
Vampy along with Captain Terry Fry Morning, Captain More, wal Dog More and
everyone in the outdoor world. Justwant to let everyone know that state of
Wisconsin leads for the consumption of brandy. So we have another title, Wally,
and it's because of this fricking weather. Stay home, start a fire

(00:53):
and have some brandy. Jeez.Well, and yeah, try a little
of that Waller sign because that's reallysmooth stuff. So yeah, speaking of
Wollersheim, well, hopefully everyone's survivingthis. The outlook for the next two
weeks is not so exciting with warmweather. The fish don't know what they're
doing. They don't know whether they'reswimming nor south, except in Green Bay,

(01:15):
and we'll talk about that. Thatplace is on fire. But fleepco
Card's going to join us from WillersheimWinery, one of our great sponsors.
Gonna talk a little bit about turkeysand another big expansion at Woollersheim and the
Bistro is definitely a destination you needto check out for a little sandwich and
a little wine tasting. And thenwe're gonna head up to Green Bay.

(01:37):
We're gonna talk with another one ofour sponsors, Mike Lewis from Exclusive Walleye
Guide Service, and I need totell you, folks, green Bay is
on complete fire. Nine pound averagewon the tournament on Saturday. Mike did
fish it. He was twenty first, but ridiculous weights coming out of there.
And I know, and a tournamenttwo weeks earlier up towards Marionette,

(02:01):
almost sixty pounds was weighed for fivefish, so it's really crazy. If
you're looking for a place to go, give him Mike a call. He's
got a twenty four foot triton andwe'll take care of you. Wally,
how about some gear now, whichtime for the Ultimate Gearheads. This week's
gearhead segment is followed by Middleton FoolMiddleton, Wisconsin. Hey, before you

(02:23):
start spending all your money on outdoorgear, have the Ultimate Gearheads check it
out. They will set you straight. Hey, folks, you don't see
that Middleton forward sticker. You paidtoo much? Wally, want to make
some points with the wife dropped thecar off for a detailed package. It'll
smell like a brand new car,and who knows what you might get out

(02:43):
of that. Kate would love that. That is you didn't be a good
thing. I thought, I thoughtyou comeback comment. I don't know.
Let you get out of that. We'd probably find a lot of goodies in
Kate's car, so I might wantto clean that out before I take it
there for the cleaning. What hegot, Wally So this week's really cool
piece of gear is made by VortexOptics. It's the Diamondback four to sixteen

(03:07):
by forty four millimeter FFP tactical riflescope. It hads a thirty millimeter tube.
It is a first focal plane design. The scope has a Matt Black
annadized finish which is durable, andit's nitrogen purge, has tactical turrets and
has an xt optical system for superiorsuper clear images. The Diamondback FP four

(03:29):
to sixteen power with forty four millimeterobjective lens is affordable and it carries the
lifetime Vortex VIP warranty. Captain WellWally my Rant Today is the Wisconsin DNR
and this is kind of interesting. There's a fellow named John Ellis who's an
outdoor writer. He wrote this story. I'm gonna try to get through this
quick. But the Wisconsin DNR andZach Finer of the university believe climate changes

(03:53):
and mismarriage but is responsible for thedeclining walleye numbers. Now you need to
listen to some of these numbers courtingWisconsin DNA are the number of walleyes speared
in Wisconsin Seeded Territory, which isabout three hundred and thirty lakes most of
northern Wisconsin between nineteen eighty five andtwo twenty two was a million forty thousand

(04:14):
walleyes. Ten percent of those werefemales, so, in other words,
one hundred and four thousand females werespeared. Because of that, the females
being speared, a million eighty fourthousand keeper walleyes never hatched, and that's
not good. The total impact ofthirty seven years of spearing seeded territory,

(04:36):
a million forty thousand walleyes were directlyremoved from the lakes that would have produced
a million eighty four thousand, onehundred and fifty six keeper walleyes never hatched.
Because of the females being speared.Five million keeper walleyes never hatched because
of the loss of one spawning yearand the second spawning year. When all

(04:57):
added up, thirteen million, fourhundred eighteen thousand keeper walleyes were removed from
the seated territory by spearing. Soyou divide that thirteen million by four hundred
and eighty one thousand for three hundredand thirty one lakes, that's forty thousand
walleyes per Lake speared out of there. So I don't think it's freaking climate

(05:18):
change. No. Yeah, Andthe one good news is with very cold
spring here, there's still ice onlakes up there. It might affect the
spearing where they're not able to spearas mini. So yeah, that's my
two cents worth. That's so yeah. We'll talk about the spring hearing results
next week. But overall all peoplevoted to reduce bang limits almost for every

(05:43):
species. Stay with us, folks, while he got polip coming up,
Yep Philippko card from the Woollersheim Winery, and thanks for listening, folks.

to the show, and how areyou. I'm doing good, Good morning
guys. Pretty chilly out this morning. Ah, yes, very chilly and
not the greatest news for the vines. Last week when we had the wet

(09:07):
snow and cold temperature on Tuesday, the buds, the buds on the vines
froze. So right now it's apretty grim picture. The crop will be
severely affected and I have been runningequipment trying to protect what's left since two

(09:31):
am. Wow. Well, wehope the best for that, and I
wish the sun would come out abit and warm up things. Thanks.
Yeah, we hope for the bestand drinking coffee. Philip. No,
you were turkey hunting recently. Howdid the hunt go this year? I
went extremely well. I was.I went Friday morning and I was there

(09:58):
half an hour to forty five minuteand I scored on a nice regular size
tom twenty two pounds ten and quongb three quarter spurs, three old bird
two. Two birds came down fromthe hill and a hand was um was

(10:22):
cutting. I had a pisto off, so that was great. She was
mad at me and I was inthe middle and the two times just came
and I picked the first one andit was a success. So nice.
It's great when your plan comes togetherlike that. Yeah, it was good.
Back to work at seven thirty. So I know you love muzzle order

(10:46):
hunting for deer. I know you'veshot in some really big white tail deer.
How was it this past season?I was outstanding. Um, I
did use my black powder. Wecouldn't I couldn't go because of work and
tastings and picking ice wine grapes onNovember twentieth. So I went November twenty

(11:11):
third, wears my black powder andI shot my second biggest buck six and
a half years old buck that Ihad seen that I have known since he
was six months old when he hadbeen shot in the foot and he had

(11:33):
a dingling foot, injured leg,and able to keep track of him every
year every winter without a rack.I knew which bucket was and and he
hang around here and he was veryvery smart, and you learn a lot
hunting those old door bucks. Well, it was interesting you stopped by the

(11:54):
store at Wilderness and showed us aclause of all the pictures of that how
had grown up. So you certainlyknow that dear really well. Yeah,
and I was, you know, during bhunting. I had seen him only
twice twice too far. He wasalways extremely careful. He every every fifteen

(12:18):
feet he stopped, checked, smiled, luke, and then another fifteen feet.
Did the same thing all the time, all the time. And that's
that's how they get big, youknow, because they are extremely careful.
And my son had wounded that backtwo years ago and an arrow through the

(12:41):
backstrap was not morally injured. Threedays later I had a picture of him,
and so I was able to augusttake that back this past fall.
So oh, congratulations. Now switchingover to the Wallershem weiner and distiller.
I heard you're expanding your warehouse there. There's a huge demand for the brandy

(13:03):
and whiskey. Is that right?Yes, Bourbon brandy, what we call
brown spirit aged spirit, is goingthrough the roof. Demand is is good.
Our bourbon brandy are becoming more andmore known throughout the state and the

(13:24):
Midwest. We are heading on toa big warehouse where we can put three
thousand barrels of bourbon. So fantastic, Philip. Tell us what's your hours
at the winery and also the bistro. So winery distilleries open twelve to five

(13:46):
every day. The bistro is twelveto three right now until Memorial Day,
and as of Memorial Day the bistrois twelve to four thirty. Fantastic,
Philip. Thanks for joining us.So. I know you got work to
do on the winery, but thanksfor taking time out and have a great

short of a dozen. Hey,folks, you'd like to catch that trophy
Walleye the Spring. Give Mike anexclusive Walleye Guide service. Call Fish green
Bay and the tributaries, the rivers, and Mike is going to join us
today Gomorrow, Mike. Good morning, Terry. How are you doing good
well? Mike? You know, with vers as high as they've been,

(16:02):
the Green Bay, Green Bay areasall is a good bet. So we're
gonna chat a little bit about differentareas up there, and should mention that
you run a twenty four foot tritonon all of Green Bay. So let's
let's just start out with the FoxRiver and kind of what's what's your take
on that, Mike? Well, the Fox has been producing like she always

(16:25):
has late and uh, a lotof fish going in and out. And
this year's spawn was weird because itwas it started, it ended, it
started, it ended, and withthe weather that we had and Uh,
there's still a lot of fish inthe river, but they're migrating out to
the lower Bay. So yeah, that's a good starting point to get going

(16:51):
well. And that's generally was whatthe spring pattern is. I guess as
long as we you mentioned University Bay. So what happens Fox come out of
these fish come out of the FoxRiver, Mike, and then they kind
of just stage up University Bay areathere right away. Yes, they stage
right there and New Bay and deadHorse Bay and they just sit there.

(17:12):
They start for their hunt to fillback up after that a couple of weeks
of rough roughness in their life.So yeah, So generally, Mike,
like University Bay guys should probably lookfor some some bottom like with rock rebels
sand you know that sands a littlebit warmer too. All I seem to

(17:32):
like that is that kind of whatthey look for there? Yeah, it
seems like they just trying to transitionand find a place to just sit there,
enjoy that the warmth, and thenuh, as the food comes by,
they pick pick it off. Yeah. Um, so let's uh,
and I should ask you most guysjust trolling that University Bay then, Mike,

(17:55):
Oh, they do, No,We'll do. There's a there's a
little rock bars all over in there, and okay, they'll do a lot
of jigging on like as the newgrowth comes with the weeds, you can
you can dig the weeds, andso there's places where you can do some
jigging. There's a lot of trollingthat does take place though, so and
I mean both are productive at times. So yeah, what about let's jump

(18:18):
up to Oconto, uh kind ofget it a little bit north, a
little farther north. How about theO'Connell shoal uh and the o'connoll River.
You want to come in on what'skind of happening there. Well, as
of right now, the fish arejust about completely out of them o'conno river
and there they're stage and just likesay down out of the fox, they

(18:41):
just get out. They find somethat transition area where they can sit,
get from warmer water and then waitfor their food to come by. And
up there, same same scenario. You can find weeds or rock bars and
you can jig and you do alot of trolling. And the shallower water

(19:02):
up there on the north side ofO'Connell, they do a lot of trolling
up there. So before the weeksget too thick. So when they these
fish come out of the Oconto River, do they generally just go out three
four miles and kind of stage upthere for a few weeks. Is that
what they do, Mike, Exactly, it's what they'll do. They'll just

(19:23):
get out there and recoup. Andif you get on them, and you
know, a lot of be perfectopening weekends for fishing, you know,
and I believe it's the fifth orthe sixth, and uh yeah, boy
them it should be pretty stacked rightthere and close close to the mouth of
the river, you know. Yeah, guys just running different style crank bits,

(19:45):
smaller ones, medium, I know, you know a lot of times
we go bigger, but that's laterin the summer. But yeah, I
mean I typically start off try andgo with the number five just because it
it gives you a good rattle buta good wiggle. But it's not too
big worthy. They think, oh, I can't handle that right now,

(20:07):
So I start off with the smallerbaits. And even you know, if
that water temps fifty degrees are above, a lot of guys will be on
that nightcrawler. Harness, that's agood way it goes. Also, hey,
Mike. I know we talked aboutthe spring fishing, but I do
want to mention you know you're runningthat twenty four foot triton and people need

(20:30):
to experience the Door County bite. And I'm telling people that you need to
book this now for the fall bite. If you've never experienced the trophy aspect
of the Door County, you reallyneed to do it. Those fish are
just playing tough and it. Ialways say it's a trip of a lifetime
and they need to book it nowfor sure. I mean in their giants

(20:53):
and they're they're such a beautiful lookingfish. I mean compared to the lower
day. These fish they get upthere and they're just dark and they're gold
and they're just they're just brutes.Usually every kis catch up there is just
a brute. So yeah, andyou just don't reel those things in,
Mike and then throw the nut outhim. You got him right to wear

(21:15):
those guys out and those gals.So hey might give your contact information for
people that want to get out onthe water with you or book a fall
trip right my website exclusively Walleye Guysdot com and you can phone me at

Captain Wally in this week's UDA,were traveling up to Michigan where a judge
has ordered a trial for two fellowsthat basically shot and killed a hunter.

(24:19):
The thing he had really pissed thejudge off. Judge Clarizio. They were
joking about it in text messages andthings, so Judge is not too happy
with these fellas. Don't know whatnecessarily what the reason was for shooting this
guy, but the guy was ahunter and someone shot him. Well it

(24:41):
kind of sounds that way. Yeah, yeah, they were, Yeah,
they were basically hunting, but theywere evidently joking about the man's death in
text messages, so that's not sogood. No. Otherwise, Wally,
on a positive note, So timefor a Dakota sunset resort. And I

(25:07):
can tell you, Wally, forpeople that are depressed there's still ice on
Devil's Lake. Tanner Churney posted up. It is starting to mount. Some
of the bridges are opening, butthey still have ice. Aw pretty crazy.
Well, if you want to catcha lot of fish, and that
would include jumbo perch, walleyes, and some huge northerns, you might want
to give Sean or Linda Timmins acall and book outing to North Dakota to

(25:32):
the Dakota Sunset Resort. They arenow booking for summer and winter fishing and
they have four brand new cabins inthe West Bay of Devil's Lake, North
Dakota. Well, here's another rant. I'll try to get through quick.
It's important because it concerns every personthat is in the outdoors in Wisconsin.
This was another story wrote by DickEllis. The people speak, but the

(25:53):
D and R ignores it. Andthis is regard to this wolf management plan
where the Wisconsin Wife Federation held alistening and sharing session. But you don't
know what wally now. One Dand R person showed up and twenty of
them were invited. It was organizedby the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation. Some of

(26:14):
the individual experience is just bizarre.Pedal or dogs being killed by wolves that
broke into the kettle. Grandmother's experienceof being encircled by wolves or deer harvest
a taxidermy is now taxidermist is nowseeing more deer come from out of state
than in Wisconsin just because of depredationfrom wolves. Farmers shared his cattle depredation,

(26:40):
which is ridiculous the amount of fifteento twenty five calves annually to wolf
depredation. Horseback riders are now carryingguns that are riding in wolf country.
So anyway, that the this draftplan, Wally, it was an expansion
plan. Basically, the w WFis saying it's an expansion plan for wolves

(27:03):
and not a management plan. Firstthing, they never put a limit on
the amount of wolves in Wisconsin.People begged for that, you know,
they begged for the back for thethree hundred and fifty thousand wolf population.
The DNR will not put a numberon it, you know. So basically
it's this was an interesting point concerningthe wildlife managers. They are falling in

(27:26):
love with a species they are obligatedto manage, and they no longer manage
a species but turn it to anexpansion. The wolf population goal is moved
from eighty to infinity and the DNRshould be held accountable. So basically,
Wisconsin hunters are leaving the state, the wolf population has doubled, and the

(27:47):
DNR is being the people in thestate is basically being ignored by the DNR
as far as begging for some typeof wolf management plan. So well,
they wanted to have a three hundredand fifty wolves on the ground in Wisconsin
captain, and some estimate there's wellover twenty five hundred already. So with

(28:10):
no management, they're kind of goingwild. And I wouldn't be happy if
one of my hunting dogs got killedby a wolf, that's for certain.
Well, Wally, when you reallythink about this whole wolf thing, think
how much the wolf impacts everything fromtourism to no more deer cat I mean,
basically, the deer camps are gonein the northern part of the state.

(28:33):
Hunters don't travel, they don't buygas, they don't buy food.
It's just one thing after the other, cattle depredation. People don't go out
in the woods like they used tofor fear of being I mean, for
all you people that really love thesewolves, you need to go out into
the north woods I've personally experienced, and when the sun goes down and there's
a wolf pack nearby, howling kindof sends a few chills up your spine.

(28:56):
And you know, it's interesting. When we were doing the elk collaring
up their lane stole, a biologistsaid, Well, one time, he
said, I just went and peteon a tree and came back the next
morning when the wolves were close by, and he said, they completely tore
the tree apart. And it's sadthat you cannot walk out in the woods
because of wolves. But I don'tknow what nothing's gonna happen, I guess
bally. Well, folks, thanksfor stand tune and make sure you get

(29:21):
some kids outdoors and enjoy yourself,be safe and have fun. Well that's
another show on this string. Inlove she around the campfire. Don't forget
to catch yoursel on the neck atUltimate Outdoors Radio dot com.
