(00:12):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio, a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again. Our resident guidesto the outdoors the Captain and the wall
Dog. Hey, good Saturday morning. This is Wally the Waldog Vampy along

(00:33):
with Captain Terry Fry Morning, Captainmar Waldorg. Hey, good morning to
everyone in the outdoor world. Hopeyou're enjoying this nice weather. And I'm
guessing shooting some turkeys. Uh.There does seem to be a lot of
goldbursh around so uh. Anyway,on this week's show, we are going
to talk about casting for kids withBrian Poseick. That event is coming up

(00:57):
very quickly. You can still signup. Should be a guideboat available,
that's a funny event. All daythere's six dollars probably seventy guideboats, I
guess. So now we're gonna chatwith Pete Jobke about invasive species. We
have not talked about invasive species andthe state of the Madison Chain, the

(01:18):
water quality and kind of you knowwhy we need to protect these waters,
clean your trailers. Invasives are huge. Pete works for Dane County Land and
Water, so we'll chat about thatand a few other things. But otherwise.
Every week we get to talk aboutgear. Now, which time for
the Ultimate gear Heads. This week'sgearhead segment is followed by Middleton four Middleton,

(01:44):
Wiscons. Hey, before you startspending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate gearheads check it out. They will set you straight.
Hey, folks, you don't seethat Middleton forward sticker? You paid too
much? Good time to go inget a spring cleaning on your truck,
Wally Captain. This week's really coolpiece of gear is a headlight. It's

(02:06):
made by Sightclops and it's a removableand rechargeable headlamp called the Hades Horizon.
This great little item has dual lightsources, a five W osram P eight
led white light with high and lowsettings and also a ultra bright cob white
light with high and low. Thishandy little light has a headband and a

(02:28):
light module that's removable. It alsohas a red light for emergencies. This
rechargeable light source saves you tons ofmoney on batteries because it is rechargeable.
Captain. I'm sure you got someheadlights, but this is a great little
item. I seem to I thinkI need more while I keep falling down
in the woods. Now, yes, yesterday I can. I'll tangle up

(02:49):
with a barbari or fence that Iforgot was there, and when you know,
inside out and it's like, comeon, man, I would spray
in some brush, had a backpackon, but YadA YadA. Yeah,
yeah, I hear you, youcan't. Those rechargeables are really nice.
I mean buying batteries. Everything I'mbuying is rechargeable. But otherwise happening,

(03:13):
Wally, how's the water temps forcoming up anything? Yeah? You know
last week we were in Lake Wisconsin. The water was sixty one in the
morning and warmed up all the wayto sixty six degrees in the afternoon.
The warm sunny days have really helpedthe fishing and crappies are biting good,
bass are biting, and also someblue gals are starting to show up.

(03:35):
So yeah, yeah, warm watertemps mean good fishing. That means the
Madison Chain should be set up wellfor the Casting for Kids event. That's
good because we need warm water.Regarding to Mississippi, my son and I
were down there on Saturday. Wehad about eighteen pounds. Everything was released
six pounder, four pounder. Acouple three and a half pound. We

(04:00):
kind of fought the rain. Toughbite, very tough bite. We had
to do some searching and twenty fivepounds won a tournament down there on Sunday.
So but water is expected to risetwo and a half feet, so
if you're thinking about go and becareful there, hey, Wally. Otherwise,
in the news, the Next Generationdemonstrate excellence in the twenty twenty three

(04:23):
and Are a Youth Wildlife Art Contest. Hats off to all these kids,
three hundred and sixty entries. That'spretty cool. A gale named chen Lin
Sophie was awarded Best to Show forher studying recreation of a wood duck.
Otherwise, Morgan Fang for a polarbear mother and cub resting in the snowbank.

(04:47):
That's pretty cool, Wally, tosee all these kids involved in that
three hundred and sixty kids. Goodstory. That's excellent. As far as
getting kids outdoors, another thing reallypopular is trap shooting for kids. My
nephew, Austin Wildman, he's atrap shooter and they had a big event
in sok at the gun club there, and kids just love shooting trap.

(05:09):
We've got a young lad from Barnevillethat shoots up to five nights a week
and he is the national champion andskeet. At thirteen years of age,
he won the national title. Otherwisespring hearing. The questions are out the
so you can see what the resultswere that. Here's a couple of things
that popped up quickly. Would yousupport eliminating lead statewide from firearm ammunition by

(05:32):
twenty thirty? That passed, well, actually that did not pass on that
six thousand to seven thousand, Yesand no. The other interesting was was
ban on live skull. That wasanother split there that it was about even

(05:53):
so. I mean, guys, but a lot of stuff passed this year
in amazing wally. A lot ofit's for protection of fishery. So there
you go. Well, stay tuned, folks. We will be right back
with Brian Poseik discussing the sixth annualCasting for Kids. We'll be right back.
Normally, when we do a commercial, we talk about all of the

(06:13):
options that Clary Building has. Wetalk about storing your toys or using it
for a workshop. But that's notwhat I'm going to talk about today.
I'd like to salute our remarkable teamfor giving the customer service you deserve.
From our engineers to the folks poundingnails. We are proud of each and
every one of them, and wethink you will be too. So instead
of talking about plenty of space foryour vehicles, I hope you will give

(06:34):
the best in the business a chance. Clary Building Corps since nineteen seventy eight.

Kids. The event was created tohelp children who are fighting cancer at the
American fe Family Children's Hospital UW CarboAnd Cancer Center in the Madison area.
Brian Poseick, Welcome to the show. Hi, Wally, how are you

(09:07):
today? I'm doing great? Thankyou, Brian. You're a committee member
and a great promoter for Casting forKids. When and where is this year's
annual event? Well, it's comingup soon, Saturday, May eighteenth,
at the Alliant Energy Center. That'swhere we get started, you know.
The committee gathers around six six thirtyor so, and then fishermen, fisher

(09:30):
women fishers, as my niece usedto say, gather about seven o'clock and
we're on the water at eight andwe get back to the Alliant Energy Center
for a happy hour around two thirty, dinner and then a live auction and
again all the benefits kids fighting cancerand you are the MC of the event.
We have a approximately seventy boats sofar. I know we're going to

(09:54):
limit it to eighty boats. Anddo we still have guide boats that need
some anglers in there? We do, you know. And it's exciting though
too. You know, when thepandemic hit a few years ago, it's
set everybody back, including our organization. But the community involvement has been great
here the last couple of years. And yeah, we're close to seventy.

(10:15):
We'd love to get eighty if atall possible. But there are some guided
boats still available. You can bringyour own boat if you'd like, you
know, if you have two otherfriends that you want to come with,
that would be great for your ownboat. It's seven hundred dollars goes with
a guided boat. You and afriend with a guide you can get on
the water for seven hundred dollars. That includes the entire day of fishing,

(10:35):
but also lunch, dinner, theauction, and a chance to win some
great, great prizes. Well,it's super fun. I know, we
get to fish together, Brian. We've caught a lot of big bass.
Last year. You smoked one aboutfive pounds on your last cast. If
I recall that was at I loveit. Yes, let's do that again,
Wally. Brian's like, we getthat boat a little bit further down,

(10:58):
I'll throw in by that ladder overthere. And you skipped it in
there and just caught a hog.And to me, that's just fun.
These are things you remember the restof your life. Yeah, and out
there with you and my brother too, it was. It was a lot
of fun. And you know, anybody listening, you know, bring family,
friends, your wife, your daughter, whatever. Well, everybody's welcome
to take part. Now. Onething really cool going on for Casting for

(11:20):
Kids. There's an online auction currentlyrunning. How can you view the auction
items and bid on that stuff,Brian, Well, our website is Casting
for Kids dot org, so castingthe number four kids dot org and you
can register there. You can donatethere as well. But we have an
online auction that's going on and we'veset a goal of trying to raise fifteen
thousand dollars in that online auction. We're about halfway there right now, but

(11:45):
there's some great items on the onlineauction at Casting for Kids dot org.
Game day experiences with the Minnesota Wild, the Nashville Predators, Rockford Ice Hogs
of the American Hockey League, Fishingtrips out to the Chipwa Valley. There's
a a Walleye charter fishing trip upin Green Bay, Madison Chain of Lakes

(12:05):
trips, mark O Seeki our hostI and Pat Westberg are hosting a couple
of guided fishing tours in Madison twothat are up on that line auction.
And then a lot of NHL sweaters, autographed sweaters from guys like Roman Yosi
and Nikita Kucherov, Steve Stamkos,Steven Stamkos, Patrick Kane, Ryan Souter,
the Dallas Stars, you know they'vemade it to the second round of

(12:26):
the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Madisonnative He's got an autograph team signed Dallas
Stars jersey. It's really cool.So all kinds of great items on that
online auction again Casting for Kids dotorg. Also there is a tremendous dinner
auction going on, and once againI mentioned Brian Pozick as the MC there.

(12:48):
It is super fun, it's fastpaced, a lot of cool items
that you can win. So ifsomeone just wants to join us for dinner
auction, how much does it cost? And it is at the Align Energy
Center, it is and it's it'sseventy five dollars, So it's for dinner
and then just to take part inthe fun. We have a wonderful auctioneer
named Marty greepintrog who is he isfast paced, he is entertaining. He

(13:11):
does such a wonderful job and hasfor six years for us. But it's
it's a chance to mingle with somewell some former Badger NHL players that also
come by. I know Tony Grenadoplans to be there as well, and
obviously Ozzie too. But yeah, seventy five dollars a nice donation, but
you get a nice, very nicedinner, the happy hour to go with
it, and then just all thefun that goes with our events. And

(13:35):
I heard this year you can comeand possibly win a boat for fifty dollars,
ticket three for one hundred. Whattype of vote it's in a Luma
Craft sixteen foot fishing boat, Wally, I mean, we had a nice
fishing boat a lumic Craft was kindenough to donate last year too, and
this one is bigger and better. And yeah, fifty dollars for one ticket,

(13:56):
or you buy three tickets for onehundred dollars and a chance to leave
our our events with a brand newfishing boat from a Luna Craft. We'd
like to thank them for their sponsorship, Don's Marine as well Goldstein Advisors,
Foodbye and WMTV fifteen. They've beengreat sponsors for us this year. Brian,

the light check out BOM's bringing motorsportsin Stolton, Wisconsin joining us today.
Pete Jopkey is going to join us. We're going to talk invasive species.
It's that time of year to bethinking about invasive Good morning, Pete,

(16:12):
Good morning Cherry. Pete. Ishould mention you work for Lands and Water
Resource Department out of Madison, Wisconsin. So I mean you and I have
known each other for years fish tournamentsand so we get to chat a lot
about invasives and you are on thewater a lot. So maybe Pete explained
for our listeners kind of what yourjob title entails is on a daily basis

(16:36):
and what you get to see inan experience. Yeah. Sure, Cherry
a water resources planner with the Landof Water Resources Department in Dane County,
as you mentioned, and a lotof what I do relates to lake and
scream management. So anything from aquaticplants to invasive species, rough fish removal,

(16:59):
habitat at work, any kind ofany kind of issues that come up
with respect to lake and stream managementand river management is one of the things
that I work on. And Pete, you know, we we all go
fishing every day, but we don'trealize what's going on behind the scenes every
day with our water because it iscritical. And you know, when you

(17:25):
talk about the financial aspect of thefishing industry and jobs, it's a it's
big as far as money wise.Yeah, and Wisconsin the fishing industry about
two point seventy five billion and alsoyou know, thirty thousand jobs associated with

(17:47):
that, so that is a majorinput in Wisconsin typically is one of the
top five states in the United Stateswith the number of fishing licenses and boats
registered. So we have a lotof action going on our on our water
bodies well, and I think alot of fishermen take the whole invasive species

(18:07):
kind of for granted. But whathappens in you know, I can just
mention, look at Asian carp Theyare now nine miles from the Great Lakes
on the Illinois River, and weknow the destruction of the Asian carp and
so we really have to take thisserious, especially with both guys getting their
boats out on the water as faras cleaning their boats and so on.

(18:30):
Yeah. See, you know,at least in Wisconsin here we've got you
know, we've got confirmation they've they'vebeen in the Wisconsin River as far as
the prairie to sect gam and certainlyon the Mississippi up up towards Pool too.
The good news is that they haven'treally established themselves all that well.

(18:52):
One of the theories is that, you know, we have a lot of
a lot of predators as you gonorth on the at least on the Mississippi.
But as you're aware of you andI talked about this, uh.
I don't know if it was latelast fall. Uh. You know,
they had a little bit of around up over there on Pool aid to
the Mississippi River and a little alarmingto see that number of fish up there.

(19:12):
So yeah, what what kind ofother and what other invasives are you
guys dealing with? And I shouldjust say constantly because it kind of is
constant. Uh. And as faras educating fishermen and what else do you
have to deal with, Pete,Well, I think one of the biggest
ones that we have UH is alot of the plant species. So I

(19:37):
shouldn't say a lot. There's twomajor ones, the Eurasian milfoil and the
clearly pond wait. Those are easilytransferred from water body to water body.
UH. Plants reproduced by fragmentation oftentimesso especially milfoil. So if people don't
clean their trailers or or drained theirlives wells or their bilges, that's some

(20:00):
major vector for for spreading these uhuh these plants. And oftentimes it's overlooked
to duck hunters and trappers, especiallywith the mud that gets on their gear
or their their waiters, that canbe another source for for spread. So
it's really human activity or lack thereof, that really contributes to the spread of

(20:22):
a basis species. How about zebramuscles? Uh, these little spiny water
fleas that drive me not sometimes Yeah, So the spiny water flea is rather
interesting. We don't have a largedistribution of those in Wisconsin. We've got
a couple of lakes up north andcertainly the Great Lakes, believe it or

(20:44):
not, the Madison Chain of Lakes. Lake Mendota has some of the highest
concentration of spiny water fleas uh thatthe researchers have found. With respect to
the zebra muscles, you know, they were really prolistic back in the eighties
and nineties. And the one thatis really concerning to me is the quaga
muscle, which is covering about ninetyfive percent of Lake Michigan. The bottom

(21:11):
and the different seber muscles need somethinghard to attach to the quaga muscles don't.
So yeah, hey hey Pete,we uh we're gonna let you get
But where could people find more infoon all the invasives if they were interested?
Yeah, good, call Harry. They the d in our website.

(21:32):
All you need to do is googlea quatic invasive and we also have a
page on the Nametown Atland and WaterResources website as well. All right,
Pete, thanks for spending a fewminutes educating us this morning. All right,

(24:51):
Hey. On this week's UDA,we are staying close to home up
in the Fond Delac area where afella got whacked uh convicted for hunting violations
warden. The violations include a legalbaiting, shooting multiple deer without registering,
hunting with a rifle during muzzloder season, not wearing blaze orange, providing false

(25:17):
information to a game warden, andalso involving his hunting party in similar violations.
So basically he lost his trapping andhunting licenses for three years upon conviction.
Yeah so hell, yeah, youknow, just do it the right

(25:41):
way. I mean, come on, man, you're using a rifle during
muzzleoader. I think that's a blatantviolation there. Obviously he's done this before.
When you stack up that many thingssooner or later while you're going to
and that was that was a hotThat was a tip line call which was
good. Yep. That's how alot of the Bardens get their cases started

(26:03):
as a tip from a concerned sportsmanyou know that cares. So yeah.
Yeah. It's time now for ourSpring Valley Kennel Field Report. If you're
traveling and need a great place toboard your dogg or dogs, contact showing
her Linda Timmins in Blue Mountains,Wisconsin at the Spring Valley Kennel Captain.
Also back jumping back to spring hearings, people need to go to the dn

(26:26):
OUR website. It's pretty interesting toread all these they've got them broke down
by county and committee and there's abunch of trout stuff going on. As
far as seasons and limits win aBago, they're talking about a limit of
twenty five white bass per fisherman. Also a fifteen inch size limit for Sauger's

(26:48):
and walleyes on Winnebago. Here's whatI was involved in. It was a
zoom call with the Mississippi River AdvisoryCommittee and basically it is thirty It was
h support working with the dn RNational Resources Board to require that fishing guides
on the Mississippi River keep their modeof transportation with fishermen clients at all times

(27:14):
to be available in a case ofan emergency. The reason this was discussed
while is and we talked about thisis the shuttle service of twenty and thirty
people and if there's an emergency, basically the guide is not there, which
is his responsibility. In a Captain'sCoastguard license, the vaute was seventy seven
two hundred to one thousand and sevenhundred, so a lot of support.

(27:37):
And you know when the when thesepass, especially passed overwhelmingly. It seems
like a lot of these moved move. It takes a little while, but
it moves and it becomes laws.So that's why it's interesting to read,
uh, you know what is favoredand you can kind of see what's going
to happen in the future with someof this stuff. Yep. And that

(27:59):
is a good rule, right, safety first, absolutely, And there's just
there's stuff covering. There's talking about, you know, group hunting and talking
about maybe you know, would youwant to just pick one season, get
one buck tag. There's all justall sorts of goodies. There's a break
for senior citizens on patron's license goingdown to one hundred and thirty bucks.

(28:23):
Increase for non resident hunters. There'sjust it's really interesting to read it,
but a lot of positive stuff outof that. And how do you get
to those spring hearing Just call theDNR website and there'll be a link there
for spring hearing results. Yeah.Cool. You mentioned earlier in the show
about turkey hunting Captain, it's beena really good year for people. With

(28:45):
the rain, a lot of turkeysmove out in the fields and people are
seeing a lot of them, andthey've been gobbling quite well these past seasons
and people are having good luck.A lot of kids are getting the first
turkey, So yeah, it's greatto be getting those kids outdoors. Well,
Wally, I went out for thefirst time in about five years,
and I saw six gobblers, fiveof them before I got to my blind

(29:07):
And then this one came on arope. I called him by himself and
almost got to the point where youknow, I was gonna roll him over.
It was about fifty yards, butI wanted him to get a little
closer, make sure, And allof a sudden he got real shy and
like turned sideways, and it's likewhat just happened here? And couldn't figure
out what happened So after when Ipicked up and decided to leave, I

(29:29):
went out and I was at theedge of a field, picked everything up,
and I look back and here wasmy big white for sale sign.
So I think the old gobbler said, hah, this guy's for sale.
I'm getting out of here. Thatwas kind of funny. It's like,
no wonder he didn't come in.He wasn't used to that sign and made
some tracks and my blind wasn't toofar away from it. So yeah,

(29:53):
but anyway, hey, thanks forspending meat any morning with the outdoors Radio
crew. Make sure you we hadover sign up for Cassie for kids.
Have a great Saturday. Well that'sanother show on the stringer if she around

(30:18):
the campfire. Don't forget to catchus on the net at Ultimate outdoors Radio
