You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio. You don't want a quest to bring
the outdoors to you. Once again, our resident guides to the outdoors The
Captain and the wall Dog. Thisis Wally the wall Dog Bampy, along

(00:34):
with Captain Terry Fry, Morning,Captain god More and wall Dog. Well,
folks, fishing is doing well.Everyone's happy because they're catching fish.
So that's that's a good thing.Just get outside and enjoy it and look
out for the wood ticks. Buthey, on this week's show, we're
gonna talk a little bit about habitatimprovement and we're gonna chat with Brian Glenzynski.

(00:57):
Hopefull I got that right. He'suh Habitat Improvement coordinator and Dane County
for Ducks on limited. Be interestingto see what they're up to with some
habitat improvement. He's our first guest. Our second guest is Ed the Diver.
That's his name, Ed the Diver, and Ed has taken up a
hobby turned into a business of divingand recovering fishing lurs and I'm talking thousands

(01:23):
and thousands of dollars. You needto go to his Facebook page. He
resells these. He cleans them up, resells them, donates him to kids
events. But you ought to seethe piles of expensive baits that he recovers
every day in all the waters. It is totally amazing. Go to our
Facebook page. He's going to beon and chat about him himself recovering a

(01:47):
lot of these lurts. Otherwise, every week we get to talk about gear.
Now, which time for the UltimateGearheads. This week's gearheads segment is
pellowed by Littleton Pool. Littleton wasHey, before you start spending all your
money on outdoor gear, have theUltimate Gearheads check it out. They will
set you straight. Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker

(02:10):
you pay too much? Stop bycheck out Middleton Motorsports for all sorts of
goodies. For a little bit ofvehicle enhancement on your trucker car. Wally
Captain. This week's really a coolpiece of gear is a spider Coal knife.
It's the Spider Coal C eighty oneGP two model. These incredibly sharp

(02:31):
knives have a full flat ground bladewhich features an oversized trademark round hole for
swift, ambidextrous one handed opening. The blade is supported by a handle constructed
with stainless steel liners nestled within texturedsg ten scale grips spider coal knives.
They're made in gold in Colorado inthe USA. Captain, this particular knife

(02:53):
is incredibly sharp and sturdy. Itretails for one hundred and eighty five bucks,
and like to have one, Captain, don't leave home without your pocket
knife, Wally. Ever, Iwas at an event in Madison. My
wife forced me to go one time, and it was interesting because you had
to clean your pockets out for securityreasons. All the old guys had a

(03:15):
pocket knife. It was funny, just all the old guys, none of
the young guys. So so,Captain. I went to a hockey game
at the Coal Center and it happenedto be the women playing at the Coal
Center and they're trying to fill theice rink, the one Don Becker used
to help sponsor, you know, and it was packed u W women's hockey

(03:36):
And anyhow, I had a knifeon me and totally forgot about it.
Went in there and I almost, you know, got handcuffed. I had
to go outside and I stashed itby a trash bin in the snow,
and I kind of marked it soI could find it at the end of
the game. But yeah, youknow, I've had one in my pockets
since I was twelve, and it'sjust natural to have one. Yep.

(03:57):
Well, back of the day,and I still carry one because I use
it much. Well. Well, you know last week I talked about the
whole wolf deal and nobody listening tothe people in the north. Well,
here's another interesting story coming on.In Minnesota. Hunters will not take part
in the Governor's Association deer Hunt opener. They are powed because they're getting no

(04:21):
support from the governor. The governorwants to ban wolf hunting. He has
anti gun legislation proposed, and basicallythey're saying, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association
saying, until the governor represents theinterest of the deer hunters, we are

(04:41):
not going to support anything regarding Governor'sevent. And besides that, look look
at the amount of tourism that's hurtthrough all of this, Wally. So
you know, people standing up,and that's good, that's what needs to
be done. Captain. You rememberwe fished the Governor Walley opened one year
on the Mynong Flowage. That's whenGovernor Walker was in office and I'm just

(05:05):
gonna say he did a nice jobfor the sportsman. You know, he
carried he was a fisherman, andhe made sure moneys were allocated to improve
walleye fishing in Wisconsin. So sometimesyou get some good outdoors governors and sometimes
they're not good. And I alwaysremember Wally. There was one day we
always woke up with a headache andI don't know what the reason for that,

(05:29):
but I remember Wally the one auction. We want a lot of stuff.
We want some hummingbird grabs and Trevorwant a muzzleholder and stuff. It
was we made a pretty good haul. But yeah, those those are fun
events. They definitely are. SoActually that was sponsored by Jack Links Jerky.
Do you remember that. Yeah, except in that area. It was

(05:50):
a well run event that was fun, actually really good. We'll stay with
us, folks. Brian Glenzinski isgonna come up and chat with us.
He's ducts on limited habitat improvement coordinators. Stay with us, looking for more
time on your boat. Hi,I'm Sean Clary, President of Clary Building

(08:05):
two guys that are definitely a fewworms short of a dozen. Hey,
welcome back, folks, and thanksfor listening. This segment is brought to
you by the Business Source. Ifyou're looking to expand your business and create
more customers and awareness with a greatnew website, contact John Russell at The
Business Source LLLSIE in Middleton, Wisconsin. Joining us next is an avid outdoorsman,

(08:30):
Brian, as manager of Conservation Programsfor the Great Lakes Initiative for Ducks
Unlimited. Good morning, Brian,Morning Wally, thanks for joining us today.
How are you great? Great?Good to be here and looking forward
to another day out in the fieldheaving to horror time later today and getting

(08:52):
out and checking up on a coupleof projects. So, Brian, how
long have you worked for Ducks Unlimitedand what do you do there? I've
worked for do You for going onten years, the eleven here in the
fall. Started out as the managerof the Wisconsin Regional Biologist and about a
year ago took on the role ofmanager of Conservation Programs for the Great Lakes

(09:18):
Initiatives. So there I oversee Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio's basically all of
the delivery side of DO You forputting projects on the ground and putting conservation
on the ground. So I'm locatedhere in Madison, Wisconsin. Ill have
a three big focus on Wisconsin withmy experience there, but we're growing here.

(09:41):
I'm hoping to replace my position heresoon and get another biologist in Wisconsin
working on putting projects on the ground. So it's a great time to be
at. Do you out of excitingstuff going on? Well, you have
a great project coming to Dane Countyand your mazing MANI what are you doing
out there? Yeah, that's agood example of how do you works.

(10:05):
And that's just one project of alarger initiative, landscape scale initiative in south
western Wisconsin, and Bean County wasa huge partner that came in and helped
us secure a million dollars from theNorth American Wetlands Conservation Act grant. And

(10:26):
so what do You does really wellis to take dollars that are out there
on the ground both private, stateand county level funds, leverage those to
bring in federal funding and mostly alot through that North American Wetlance Conservation Act,
but through Great Lakes Restoration Initiative anda bunch of other sources. And

(10:48):
so Deane County was a big partnerand offering up some match and so we
wrote a branch called the Southwest WisconsinConservation Corridors that covers, uh, you
know, follows the Wisconsin River Corridor, the Sugar River Corridor, and the
Pecatonica Corridor and looks to put conservationon the ground to kind of link critical

(11:13):
habitat. And so this one atWalking Iron Wildlife Area was Dane County owned
property was all in egg and theyhad always been looking to the store and
this opportunity came along to put acouple of different funding sources together. One
from like I said, the NorthAmerican Weatmon's Conservation Act grant that you got,

(11:35):
and we wrote a Wisconsin Waterfowl Habitatstampit those are the dollars that everyone
who buys the Duck stamp goes intoa pool. And so we applied for
and received a grant from the DuckStamp to help fund this project. And
then Dane County themselves are putting upa big chump of the funds and and

(11:56):
we're going to restore about one hundredand some speakers of wetland and about the
same of upland out there on thisproperty that Bean County purchased a while ago,
and really excited to be working withthem on it. They've you know,
some some partners are are more intomaybe some more diverse habitats, which

(12:22):
we serve those needs as requested. But I'm excited about this in because Deane
County. That's all in for kindof a waterfall specific management plan here and
restoration projects, and we're going forsome premium waterfall habitat out there, and
it's also gonna gonna have other benefits. But really really looking forward to get

(12:46):
this one on the ground for nextfall and for the birds and next spring.
So the area is near the mazemaining bottoms part of the Wisconsin River
was kind of a floodplain forest andyou're doing some scripes they're making like ponds
right for puddle ducts will benefit otheranimals as well. Yeah. Absolutely,

(13:07):
Like I mentioned, we are doingtype of waterfall focused restoration there. We
are. There's a berm that's goingto go around there that Dane County folks
have a great team of managers thatgo run and just prescribe fire and all
sorts of brush management and the goodmanagers of their land. So one of
the things they had wanted was kindof a perimeter trail slash fire break,

(13:31):
and so we constructed a berm aroundwith wetland to hold back water and then
are doing some scrapes within there tomake sure we've got some deeper pockets of
open water. And obviously focused onwaterfall, but all sorts of other marsh
birds and shorebirds will will use it. That it will have a water control
structure on there, so the parksguys can draw that down during peak shorebird

(13:56):
migration and expose mud flats there forthose guys as they migrate through um.
And that's some of the great stuffthat Dane County does with their way.
And so we built this kind ofa Cadillac version of a of a restoration
there to give them opportunities to benefitnot only waterfall, but a bunch of
other species. And then this flowsthat you mentioned right into the Wisconsin River,

(14:20):
and with all the water quality concernsand the issues downstream all the way
to the Gulf, with the hypoxyissues going on there, the water quality
benefits are huge as well. Thategg Rand was kicking a bunch of nutrients
right into right into the Wisconsin Riverdown to the Mississippi and outs taking that

(14:43):
outs go ask some fag water qualitybenefits to well. Brian, thanks for
all the great work you do andenjoy your day to day Thanks folks.

servers. Head over to our websiteclick on that. Mike Lewis book a
family trip, book a trophy tripon his twenty four foot Triton. While
we're talking a little bit about GreenBay and I kind of have a unique
person joining us this morning, EdBieber, and people might know him from
Ed the Diver, and we're goingto find out what Ed is doing diving
up in Green Bay and the surroundingarea. Good morn, Ed, Good

(17:02):
morning. Well Ed. You kindof have a unique little profession going on
there. I thought it was prettycool, so I wanted to have you
on the show. And so Ed, you are a diver, and I'm
kind of curious for we get intowhat you do with diving. How long
you've been diving, and how didyou end up into it. I've been
scuba diving for a little over threeyears. Before that, I was just

(17:23):
free diving, holding my breath andstay in the shallows, collecting lures.
And I started it after a walletfishing with my kids. You can teach
them out of fish and of courseI'm gonna lose my own lures, but
they're gonna lose my lures too,so I needed to get them and that
was my goal. It was toget them back, and in getting mine

(17:45):
back, I was finding many manyother people's lures too and decided they needed
a new home. Yeah, youknow, d years ago, I got
certified to dive, and it's youknow when you get to see the underwater
fishing world, and you know, you can bang some rocks together and the
fish come up and investigate you,and it's it's pretty unique to be down

(18:06):
there swimming with them. But Ihave to ask you before we get into
your lure retrieval, is what what'sthe most unusual thing that you've kind of
experienced while diving. Oh, besI'd seen big sturgeon with low visibility,
you know, six six inches toa photo visibility, you got a huge
you know, five to six footsturgeon pump in or you see the tail

(18:26):
right in your face or slaps youthe mask. Um. I mean I
found some pretty cool stuff. Um. I don't know if that's another question
later, but uh, find modelninety four lever action rifle Winchester steriously yep,
wrapped and play. Do you havea guess how that rifle might have

(18:48):
got there? Um? It wasright in the middle of a bridge.
Something tossed it up a bridge inthe Monomitee River up in McCalister. Um.
I called the Sheriff's department and gaveit to him, and they couldn't
find any any crimes committed with itor anything. So I got it here
as a trophy. Yeah. Iwas kind of thinking that was part of
the reason. Either that or maybea guy who was you know, a
wife was mad at her husband andthought I'll fix him, so he threw

(19:12):
his deer hunting gun off the bridge. I don't know, but let's jump
over to your lure retrieval. You'vebeen having quite a bit of fun and
have drawn quite a bit of attentionwith the amount of lures that you are
retrieving. So tell us about yourlure retrieval. A little business there,
Okay, So yeah, I havea business. In the springtime, I'm

(19:33):
out selling in in my toy hoarcamper down by the river. I've got
to permit the city to do that. I'm registered with the state in the
i RSUM. I also felt onmy website at the diver dot com or
I have different time trades to togetherin some other individual lures. But that's
about fifty sixty percent of my incomeis lure selling, the other forty percent

(19:57):
of social media income. But it'sbeen it's been pretty cool. Um,
there's not not a end in sight. Anywhere you go. You can find
lures, you can find trash. That's do a lot of voluntary trash clean
up. Well, I was goingto mention that hats off because you don't
just grab the lures if you seetrash down there, and you know,

(20:18):
we can tell people to go toadd the diver on Facebook because it's cool
that you take video of handfuls oflures and junk and you have your little
floating raft that you dump those in. But you know you've kind of been
helping the youth out too. Youwant to mention that a little bit ed
mhmm, yeah, yeah. Soa lot of a lot of people have

(20:41):
been donating up stuff too for meto give us the youth or donating money.
Um, I've been doing that. You know, always when I'm diving,
I'll be throwing out lures to kidson the banks. Um, even
adults, you know, trying tobe fair to everybody. But the kids
they follow me along the banks. They're they're saying, I love your channel,
I watch in YouTube or TikTok,And then of course they throw them

(21:02):
a free lure or a couple ofthem, handfull of them, and they
really enjoy that. And I,you know, just trying to give back
my local community. I encouraged kidsto clean up the banks. You know,
if they bring back a bag oftrash, I'll give them a free
hat or a couple of lures. So they really like that. Nice.
Join me dayan Ultimate Outdoors radio edBieber he goes by Ed the Diver on
Facebook. You really need to checkthat out. And I know at the

(21:26):
Wisconsin Fishing X Ball, it's kindof crazy when you just hand a youth,
a young kid, a fishing lure, and there the smile that comes
to their face just because they gota free lure. So giving them a
poll and everything else is very cool. How many lures? We got about
a minute and a half left athow many lures have you recovered? You
are you kind of keeping track?I lost track? But last year probably

(21:52):
around a ten thousand lures last yearand game way about. Yeah, so
they're not all good, you know. You get ones that are rusted in
the hooks that j but you recycle. I recycle the lead lures also,
yeah, but and the ones thatDad paints everything well ed. Thanks for
spending six minutes with us on EntreprenadoorsRadio and keep up the great work.

(24:36):
Hey, Captain, you're up next. Hey, this week's UDA,
it's going to be short and sweet. A turkey poacher first person in Indiana
to get a lifetime hunting band, which hopefully will the Interstate Wildlife Compact will
kick in and ban him in abunch of other states. But for six

(24:56):
years he basically had a numerous wildlifeviolations in six different states. So boom,
you're done hunting wall ally, whatdo you got? I think that's
smart. I mean, come on, man, he's a habitual violator,
and you know it's not fair tothe rest of the people that are doing
everything legally. So if you seesomething illegal, say something. Yep.

(25:22):
Hey, it's time now for ourDakota Sunset Resort field report. Fishing is
really picking up on Devil's Lake inNorth Dakota. If you want to learn
more or planet it's a great destinationnot only for fishing, but duck hunting
and pheasant hunting and other upland birds. Get a hold of Sean and Linda
Timmins at the Dakota Sunset Resort,Hey wally in this week's news around the

(25:47):
so called world of the US,this one, this one some scary stuff
and people need to pay attention.I talked about this a couple of months
ago. I'll try to blow throughthis. In California, an appeal has
been filed by plaintiffs in the NRAback lawsuit challenging a state law that has
a potential to bring California's hunting andshooting sports to the brink of extinction.

(26:10):
In twenty twenty two, California passedAB twenty five seventy one basically making it
illegal to market hunting, to markethunting and shooting sports to the California youth.
So basically, there's an injunction whichviolates constitutional rights under the first,
second, fifth, and fourth amendments. Plaintiffs Safari Club, International, US

(26:34):
Sportsman Alliance, Congressional Sportsman's Foundation. But here's a scary part, Wally,
the trouble with us. It's abroad scope bill. It doesn't really define
its term. But the bottom lineis any content promoting or encouraging youth hunting
or shooting sports will obviously be coveredunder the statute at AB twenty five seventy

(26:56):
one, and you are subject toa fine of twenty five thousand dollars per
copy of content. So, forinstance, Wally, if you're a retailer,
you cannot post a picture of afather and son hunting, promoting hunting,
promoting hunting, or you'll be finingtwenty five thousand dollars. And this
thing could possibly pass. This iswhat's happening in our world. This is

(27:21):
very bad, Captain. I mean, what happened to all the tradition of
getting out with your kids outdoors andhaving a great time. And of course,
where I work, I've been sellingsporting goods forty five years of my
life. I'm at wilderness fishing game. I see youth come in, both
boys and girls that shoot trap.Scholastic trap shooting is huge in Wisconsin,
and when these kids have success,it actually guides them through their life.

(27:45):
If they're a competitive shooter and they'regood at it, they've got something to
be proud of. So the shootingsports are fun, and it's good for
California to do that. We mightas well just chop the whole state off
and let it float away. Well, and then you could credit Governor Newsom
for this, because he's the onepushing it. But you know, no

(28:06):
matter how good it feels, thesepeople don't care. They want They do
not want hunters out in the woods. They don't want so they're going after
the youth. So at some point, if they can stop all the youth
from becoming interested in outdoor recreation,so this, you know, basically,
it's going to ban the use offirearms and firearm accessories in all advertisements,

(28:30):
magazine articles, flyers, social mediapromotions, and any other communications promoting youth
shooting, sports, camps, huntingclinics, or firearm related activities. So
if this thing goes through, youcan pretty much say that hunting and shooting
in California is done. And youknow what, Wally, another state will
follow suit. You can get's guaranteed. Well, New York will be the

(28:53):
next to do it. And soWeatherbe corporation who made beautiful rifles for years
their heirlooms and people pass them outto their kids and grandkids. They move
from California to Sheridan, Wyoming, which is a gun friendly state, and
they're doing fine out there. ButKimber, who's in New York, moved
from Yonkers, New York down south. I believe it's Alabama. I'll have

(29:15):
to check. But what's causing thesemanufactures to move around is all these stupid
laws that you're talking about, Captain. It's wrong. Well, you know,
and there's two ways to get huntersout of the woods, and that's
phil the woods with wolves. Idon't mind a few wolves, but wolves
pretty much wipe out big game herds. So the hunters don't hunt or stuff
like this. And I'm telling youthis because you guys sitting out there you

(29:40):
need to join some organization that isactive in the political world regarding this stuff.
So thanks for joining us here onUltimate Outdoors Radio this Saturday morning.
Don't forget to catch us worldwide oniHeart Radio. Well, that's another show
