Rod. You're on board with UltimateOutdoors Radio on a quest to bring the
outdoors to you once again. Ourresident guides to the outdoors the Captain and

(00:27):
the Wall Dog. Hey good SaturdayMorning. This is Wally the Wall Dog
vamped me along with Captain Terry FryMorning. Captain, Hey good, marn't
everyone in the outdoor world. Ihope you're enjoying this hot weather. We
do things hurt, but we're stilltalking fishing this week. So much going

(00:48):
on in the fishing world with tournamentsand nonprofit fishing events and so on.
So we're gonna check in with GregBone up North Fishing Guide Hall of Fame
Angler. We're going to see what'shappening in the north Woods. And then
we're gonna check in with Pat Calmertonfrom Wolfpack Adventures. One of the hottest
bites for King's going on on LakeMichigan right now. You definitely need to

(01:11):
get a family trip booked. Itis pretty cool. Otherwise, every week
we get to talk about gear. Now it's time for the Ultimate Gearheads.
This week's Gearhead segment is followed byMiddleton Pard Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey,
before you start spending all your moneyon outdoor gear have the ultimate gearheads.
Check it out. They will setyou straight. Hey, folks, you

(01:34):
don't see that Middleton Ford sticker, you have paid too much a Captain.
This week's really a cool piece ofgear is a thermost cell. These portable
little devices do an amazing job ofrepelling mosquitos, like creating a fifteen foot
radius invisible mosquito protection zone. They'reeasy to use. Just insert the blue
repellent Matt twist in the small buttanefuel cartridge in place, turn the switch

(02:00):
on, and push the starter buttonto start the burner. Captain Kate and
I have four of these units nowand they absolutely work great. They're pretty
inexpensive, about forty bucks and thenyou buy replacement fuel and Matt's. I
don't know if you use them,Captain, but they are awesome. Yeah.
I actually used them on Winnebago lastweek in the boat and if there's
not much wind, it pretty muchtakes care of things. So happening in

(02:23):
the outdoor world something you folks needto check out. I shared a video
YouTube video of the Walleye Lake ErieWalleye Cheaters court arrangement also their plea bargain
agreement, but It was basically ahalf an hour video of the Walleye cheaters.

(02:46):
The sad thing is they got offreally easy, and the real bad
thing out of the whole deal asguys that play second and third and fourth
for nine tournaments, they they probablycheated and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
But I'm guessing that they had noevidence of the previous nine tournaments to

(03:12):
charge them with anything. But youdefinitely want to check that Outgo to Ultima
Outdoors Radio and check out the YouTubevideo I shared. Well, what a
shame, you know, when youhave thousands of tournaments going on and it's
generally great sportsman and you know, competitive, but cheating, there's no place
for that. No otherwise happening lastweek, which is another thing you want

(03:38):
to check out. And I'm actuallygonna do a little follow up interview with
a young high school fellow who isfishing the high School World Finals in Lacrosse,
Wisconsin. I'm gonna do an interviewwith Caitlin Costs. Him and his
partner is fishing in this there fromthe melrosemon Dull School district, So it'll

(04:00):
be fun to talk with him aboutthis high school format. And I think
it's the neatest thing that these schoolsprovide a phishing team type program promotes phishing
outdoor activities and competition. So thereis hundreds and hundreds of people from all
over the nation coming to lacrosse orcame to lacrosse, and so we'll kind

(04:23):
of mop up and see how thatwent well. You know, speaking of
high school age, you know, trap shooting, skeet and sporting clay shooting
is really growing around the country, which is great to see. Recently,
in Sauk City, Wisconsin, lastweekend they had the state skeet shooting Championships.
Over two hundred and sixty kids competedcaptain. Some of these kids are

(04:46):
ringers. One kids shot a hundredstraight skeet, which is not easy,
and two others followed up by shootinghundreds also, so perfect scores for these
young people, and it's it's reallygreat to see them out there and continuing
the tradition of shooting firearms. Well, it's just good stuff. If you

(05:08):
know your child is struggling looking foran avenue. When we were in Florida
last year, we ran into ayoung fellow who had some health issues and
he was really struggling, and hegot into fishing competitive fishing as a youngster
and has just been very successful.Might have possibly saved his life. So

(05:30):
good thing to get those kids intoit. Some of these school districts otherwise,
stay with us. Greig Bone isgoing to join us. In nineteen
seventy eight, one company revolutionized themetal building industry. That company vowed to
do things the right way, usingthe best materials, the best engineering,

(05:51):
and most importantly, the best people. That company is clearly Building Corporation,
and we still continue to do thingsthe right way. Hi, I'm Sean

(07:48):
Hey, welcome back, folks, and thanks for listening. This segment
is brought to you by Tim Andrew'sHorticulturists. If you need a great landscape

Is a legendary Northwoods fishing guide withover forty five years of guiding experience,

(08:09):
has authored five Walleye books and hasover one hundred and seventy five nationally
published articles. Greg was inducted intoin the twenty sixteen Nashwater National Freshwater Fishing
Hall of Fame and is commonly referredto as mister slip Bober. Greg Bone,
Welcome to the show. Good morning, Great to be with you,

(08:31):
Wally. Thanks Greg. Hey,you have a new article coming out in
the current issue of in Fisherman Magazinethat you co wrote with Dan Johnson.
What's the article about? Yes,that's correct. In fact, Dan Johnson
and I, along with a coupleof other guides had teamed up to do

(08:52):
a lead walleye pattern for fishing wellsummer fringe walleye. Send them the July
issue of In Fisherman and Dan Johnson'ssuch a great writer. Him and I
have collaborated to do a number ofpieces through the years, and was great
to be along with him on thisarticle. Now, what is the current

(09:16):
walleye bite like on lakes and floyagesin northern Wisconsin? Right now? I
see a trend or a bit oftransitioning from the weed walleye bite that we
had a strong weed walleye bite overthe last number of weeks into more of
the edge stuff, more edges, sandbars, drop wops, not real deep,

(09:41):
but probably in that twelve to fifteenfoot range. Okay, Now,
how long have you sold and promotedthe greg bone walleye limit Minnow? Oh
gosh, a long time. Thatthat bait just produces walleyes. It's great
for people that are fishing let weedsfor example, where live bait can get

(10:07):
a little bit tough to work intothose pockets of weeds and fringes and edges,
and something plastic will outproduce live baitmany times over in those types of
situations. Well, a lot ofus are learning that. And I was

(10:28):
fortunate to fish with you June sixthwith Bob Didrick, our good friend,
and you and myself and Bob Didrick. We boated sixty two fish on our
fish counter with over forty walleyes, and almost all of them were on that
walleye limit. Minnow first, thanksfor an amazing walleye day, and that
was awesome, And tell us kindof how we were catching those fish.

(10:50):
Tell the listeners, well, startingearly was a key to our so we
did have and knowing where those newlyemergent weeds were coming into play. We
had a late spring this year, half of late spring, i should say,
and those weeds were kind of setback from the normal growth here,

(11:16):
so we were able to fish alot of new weeds coming up. And
those locations in Boy Walleye sure usethose weeds in the spring right after spawning,
immediately after. And now that hasgrown more so the deeper edges like
coontail weeds, for example, sandgrass, which is what the Summer Fringe

(11:37):
Walleye article is about, that's goingto really come into play. And I
just want to see this. Ifyour favorite lake has sand grass and you're
not fishing that you're really missing Imean, you're really missing out. So
look for it. Search it now. Greg, we used that snap jigging

(11:58):
tick nique that showed us up north. Tell folks a little bit how that
works. The snap jigging technique isit's something that a lot of people have
used and developed for walleyes, andit's a trigger mechanism. It's a it's
a method, it's a delivery thatfrom the cast all the way back to

(12:22):
the boat. You snap jig yourjig or jig in plastic jig and live
bait carried jigs are good for thatand us trigger response, immediate response.
You can be in a school ofwalleyes and if you don't jig it right,
if you don't provoke their attention, you're really going to be fishless.

(12:43):
So always try snap jigging when anythingelse isn't working. Greg, One last
thing, if someone wants to booka date, and I know you're very
busy, you guide seven days aweek. What's the best way to get
a hold of you to book afishing outing with Greg bone? Oh,
thanks for asking. The best wayto do that would be right on our

(13:05):
strictly Walleye lighted strictly Walleye dot comand from there you can see our sched
art calender. We can be veryhelpful that way. That's just the easiest
way to do it. Fantastic.Well, Greg, I'll look forward to
fishing with you again. Thanks fortaking time out and doing the interview.

(13:26):

(15:16):
the show, I'm noticed, I'msaying old Had Kilmerton. Good morning,
pat, Hey, good morning, gentlemen. How the heck are we well,
Pat, I see the bites prettyhot on Lake Michigan. We've been
talking about a lot of fishing, but that's the way it is this time
of year. So so Pat,where are you guys located. Let the

(15:37):
folks know what port you fish outof, and a little bit about the
business and so on. Yeah,Actually, the fishing has been really good
all spring. You know, we'reout of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. We run
a couple of salmon boats. We'drun three salmon boats out of the port
of Sheboygan, and it started offreally good with the brown trout and the
skinny water or the shallow water thewhole month of vapor and then as we

(16:00):
rolled into me our Coho salmon startedshowing up. And now actually our bigger
kings are starting show up, andyou know, the lake trouter always there.
So the fishing is really good. We're in double digit numbers, oh
majority of the time here already, which you know, quite honestly, we
always have that lull in between theCoho salmon and the king's really really getting

(16:23):
going. But this year it justkind of transition right into the one into
the other. So it worked outreally really well. So and Pat we
should let people know that you guysare a family business. Your dad,
the old legend Y Camerton, whowas actually in ex Wisconsin Warden, is

(16:44):
still on board helping once in awhile. And we should mention the name
of the your operations, Wolfpack Adventures. So how about a little bit on
presentations for the different species. Pat, Yeah, you know it goes all
the way down through. You know, right now the fish is really good.
So what we're doing is we're runningneither rattlesnakes or spoons up on lead

(17:07):
core anywhere to the double lot dodgersand pena flies. You know, the
blue is blue has been out producinganything green is a cool second. You
know, champagne colors or are gettinga few bites here and there. But
once you start getting into the salmonand the nuts and bolts of things,
and your your wire divers and yourcoppers are going you know, with the
eight inch rotators and you can goanywhere from a fly eighteen to twenty four

(17:33):
inches behind that, you know,a super Bowl frog is probably still the
best. I mean, that's beenkind of the staple for the last couple
of years. As far as afly color. You know, the mistake
is really good. We're starting torun a lot more of the spinfish.
So you know, if you're doinga meat presentation where you were throwing as
some of that you know, flavoredtuna and stuff, the oily tuna up

(17:57):
in the spinfish and and running noseuh anywhere from the seven to nine color
lead cards. We're running some maglips. We're running you know, matter
of fact, it's uh right now, it really doesn't even matter. There's
there's a lot of fish there werewe're catching a lot of fish. We're
running anywhere from that two five totwo seven. You know, we're we're

(18:18):
running a lot of fishhawks stuff, making sure that we know that the current
is is where it needs to be. We're running a lot of the lot
of the off shores up on youknow, your lead cards and your copper
off shores up on the on thesurface, to spread them out a little
bit. I mean, life isuh, to be honest with you,
it's a it's a it's a reallygood year to have one of them sixteen

(18:41):
foot bulls. Because the fish arethe fish are very active. They're they're
biting no matter what you throw itin the water. You don't have to
have all the fancy all the fancygear. You can get out and do
it, and we're not going veryfar. We're going anywhere from you know,
sixty to one hundred already, youknow early in the season. Here
you go ahead, go ahead,Oh, add the warms up. I'm

(19:03):
sure that will be you know, hitting out ledge because out and Sheboygan you
got. It's fairly fairly a slowdrop until you hit about sixty foot and
it drops from one sixty year youknow, sixty to about one hundred and
twenty fairly fast, so you don'thave to go very far at all.
Two miles out, you know. That's the best part about Schboyga as your
fishing time. You're starting your charter, you know, in the morning,

(19:26):
and you're fishing within twenty minutes. It's not an hour drive coming down the
river and everything else. Yeah, well you mentioned Pat, I was going
to ask you, and you alreadycovered it is. Sometimes guys want to
and we've done it, take personaleighteen nineteen foot boats out and especially in
the fall and the kings start comingin more, guys with boats can actually
do that. But so Pat,if people want to book you can handle

(19:49):
one up to six people. Andyou know if for people that have not
done this, it is just atrip that you'll remember if it's family and
friends, because you know, whenthe a actions hot, it's a ball.
You get to take fish home toeat, put them on the grill.
So how many people can you handleon each trip? Pat? Yeah,
we can put up to six peopleper boat, but we've done groups

(20:11):
up to one hundred and fifty forbig corporate outings. Thought of us.
Carter boats will work together and makesure that everybody can get out fishing,
you know, so we can wecan accommodate any any sized group that you
have, make sure that you getout there. A lot of people always
ask why do you keep guiding? And you know, it's one of them
things where I can honestly say thatI can. There's no way that I
could ever imagine on how many peoplecaught their biggest fish in their lifetime,

(20:36):
you know, no matter what agethey were with us, and you know
that something to hold. So thatwebsite quick, We'll let you go Bullpac

much time outdoors. When they gethome, their wives say, haven't you

and thanks for listening. You know, people do some incredibly stupid things outdoors,
and now it's time. Now it'stime for the Ultimate Damas segments.

(23:00):
This segment is brought to you bygramp of Railtdoors. You need to learn
more about food plotting. Give JohnO'Brien a call at gramp Railtdoors and he'll
give you some great ideas. CaptainWell, this week's UDA were staying in
Wisconsin, and my UDA choice, whether it's appropriate or not, is I'm

(23:21):
calling out the lock to Flambeau Tribefor you people that have not been following
what's going on up north. Amonth or so ago, they did road
closures on a lot of homeowners propertiesand driveways where people could not get out
to go to work. Evidently acrosstribal land the roads and driveways, they

(23:42):
couldn't get out to work, theycouldn't get groceries, they couldn't get back
to their house. Some of themhad to go buy boat or snowmobile.
Now they want to and you knowyou might want to check on this.
If you fish any of the lakesin this lock the Flambo area tribe area,
they want to charge boat landing fees, which I can understand that.

(24:06):
The thing about it is like fora business that installs peers and so on.
They want to charge the guy threehundred and fifty dollars to access the
landing. Otherwise it's going to betwenty five bucks for a three day pass.
So every three days, if youfished this, you gotta pay twenty
five dollars and then they have aseasonal pass for sixty which I guess,

(24:30):
so I mean everyone's charging for youknow, boat landings. But then we
get into the issue of the spearing, and I just don't see a lot
of cooperation out of these tribes.Whether they have a leg to stand on,
I don't know, but it's gettingout of hand and this is just
one more thing that's gonna piss offa lot of people. So anyway,

(24:52):
that's my choice for this week.Well, well, Cavin, it's time
now for the Spring Valley kind offield report. If you happen to be
traveling or taking your summer vacation andneed a great place to board your dog
or dogs, contact shown or LindaTimmins in Blue Mounds at the Spring Valley
Kennel and also Captain. They havea resort called Dakota Sunset Resort in Devil's

(25:15):
Lake, North Dakota, and talkingto Shawn last week, the fishing is
on fire route there. Yeah,it seems to be picking up everywhere.
Good place to take a little roadtrip. Otherwise, events coming up,
and this comes up every year. It's the I call it the ride bicycle,
ride to drink. It's the ragBrey rolling on the river. This

(25:37):
happens over in Iowa. It's thefiftieth annual and it's a twenty seven mile
ride up to Mississippi on July twentyninth. And actually they could end up
going five hundred miles if they wantedto. But in the end they all
get together and drink beer. Sothat might be something a guy wants to
take part in. Also, Saturday, August fifth is the family Fishing Day

(26:03):
at the Cleary Pond in Verona,Wisconsin. Captain, and we've done that
for years and everyone always catches fish. That is a great time. I
have one more good event here andI don't think anyone's ever heard of this,
but it's called the Tug of Waracross the Mississippi. Oh. I
see, my dog must be chasingand looking at a turkey in the yard.
But anyway, what this is isthis is a this has been going

(26:26):
on for thirty five years where theIowa Tuga War team competes against the Illinois
Tug of War team. They stretcha rope across the river. The trouble
is the Iowa guys are kind ofpaid off because they've lost for ten years
and they're blaming it on the currentin the river, which I don't know
about that. So in order tosolve this, they're going to put a
barge in the middle of the riverto support the rope so the Iowa guys

(26:48):
can't wind anymore about losing the tugof war across the river. So this
is going on August tenth and twelfth. I think it'd be a pretty cool
road trip. I don't know ifthey just holy other team in the river,
is that what happens? But uh, I think so to keep flopping
right in the mud in the river. Can you imagine the liquor consumed after

(27:10):
this event, Wally? And beforeand during? Yeah? Well what's that?
What was the data on that? That does sound really fun to go
see the August tenth and twelfth.Yeah, okay, very cool. But
yeah, but you got anything else, Wally? Otherwise I got a little

(27:32):
carp news. Um, noah,go ahead, what's happening with carp?
Ah? While the invasive carp issuednow, um, commercial anglers have caught
thirty more invasive carp. This wasactually as of a couple of months ago.
So and they're all the way upinto Winona, which is not good.
Um, So, really they're tryingto figure out where these carp are

(27:53):
actually completely you know, how manywaters they inhabit. They're in the Saint
Croix now. But what they've comeup with is they can actually test the
water for invasive carp because these invasivecarp shed skin, hair, carcasses,
thesis, and body fluids. Sothrough DNA they can sample water and find

(28:15):
out if the carper in that area. So it's just an ongoing thing,
Wally. Yeah, Well, let'shope they can get a grip on it
and they should have a bounty oncarbon. Yeah. Well, folks,
thanks for spending Saturday morning with theUltimate Outdoors Radio crewmember. Remember catch our
