You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radioon a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again. Our resident guidesto the outdoors the Captain and the Wall
Dog. Hey, good Saturday morning. This is Wally the wall Dog Vampy

(00:33):
along with Captain Terry Fry. Goodmorning, Captain, Hey, good Saturday
morning, everyone there in the outdoorworld. Wally, Uh, well,
Wally, the old heat and mosquitoesof come on and uh the high waters
taking care of a little bit offishing pressure and it looks like it's just
gonna keep rising with with uh withsome of the rain we've been getting sold.

(00:58):
Yeah, you know that, captainare the worst ever. We counted
over a million just in our yard. He counted a million, and we
killed a lot of those. Two. I mean, unreal. Is that
because all the standing water in thewoods or do we have some many?
They are on attack mode, that'sfor sure. Well this week we are

(01:19):
actually I guess with both interviews,we're traveling up to Lake of the Woods.
Coincidental or they both hit, butthat is one heck of a fishery
up there. Our first guest,Joe Cleansing, is going to join us.
Joe takes a Lake of the Woodstrip every year with a group,
and we you know, fantastic fishery. We did houseboat trips for thirteen years

(01:40):
up there. But it's just apretty cool getaway. And then we're gonna
head down to the south end ofLake of the Woods talk with Joe Henry,
who was tourism director down there. We're gonna talk walleyes, what the
walleyes are up to, and we'reactually gonna talk about muskie fishing up in
the north West Angle. I meana lot of people travel for muskie fishing.

(02:02):
We're gonna talk about the best wayto get up there, the options
to get up there, and Ibelieve he said the biggest one that he's
heard of being caught is fifty seveninches. So yeah, I'm gonna talk
a little bit about muskies up there. But otherwise every week we get to
talk about gear. Now, whichtime for the Ultimate gear Heads. This

(02:24):
week's Gearhead segment is powered by MiddletonFord Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey, before
you start spending all your money onoutdoor gear, have the Ultimate Gearheads check
it out. They will set youstraight. Hey, folks, you don't
see that Middleton forward sticker. Youpaid too much Wally Captain. This week's
really cool piece of gear is alive bait cooler. It's the Angle Live

(02:46):
Bait thirteen core capacity portable cooler withlithium ion rechargeable air raider. This great
bait storage unit now comes with ultraquiet rechargeable air raidor pump and bubbler,
which will save you a ton ofmoney since you'll not need a set of
disposable D batteries every time you fish. The Ingle Live Bait pro well has

(03:06):
a strong carry handle, stainless steelhinges, and is built to last captain
itself for around one hundred and twentydollars. You know, Wally funny,
you should mention that a few ofmy buddies use the lithium one because you
know, with fishing willow cats, well even mintos. You know, you
you know, you get there, your batteries are dad or this battery.

(03:27):
You gotta go buy batteries. SoI actually bought one of those, and
I believe they'll run almost forty eighthours on a charge. But it's just,
you know, it's pretty cool. You can just plug them into you
know, even into your vehicle ifyou got to plug in USB and recharge
that baby and no more battery stuff. Plus batteries aren't cheap, so hopefully

(03:51):
in the long run you save somemoney. But hey, speaking of middleton
Ford, Wally our middleton Ford VortexWinter. Last week of the Vortex Sweatshirt
was Gerard hillim Brand. Gerard's anavid listener, our one listener for the
show, so congrats to him.Wally, you have some a little bit

(04:12):
of news you want to talk about. We kind of lost an outdoor writer
here last week and a pretty saddeal. Yes, for those of you
who haven't heard already, we losta good friend, outdoorsman and great outdoor
writer last Thursday. Gary Ingberg passedaway at the age of seventy five.
Gary had a big smile and abig heart. He loved hockey, fishing,

(04:32):
Labrador retrievers, and spending time outdoors. Gary was a good seminar,
speaker, blogger, and outdoor photographerand he will be missed by many.
Captain. Yeah, he was prettywell known around the industry and he always
liked dogs. He did have ayou mentioned Wally earlier when we were talking.

(04:53):
He did have a puppy that wasin the house that made it out.
But yeah, otherwise a pretty saddeal there, and he'll he'll be
missed. He got plenty of timein the outdoor world, that's for sure.
What else is new Walley? Besideshigh water well fishing has been very

(05:15):
good actually, bluegill fishing continues tobe good for area anglers. Walleyes are
biting in the weeds and also onslip bobbers with leeches, and there's a
good trolling bite up in Lake Wisconsinwith crank bates and overall, Captain,
it's been quite good out there, except for all the rain we've been hamming.
YEP, seems to be holding on. Hey, Coming up, Joel

(05:38):
Clinsley. He's going to join uson a recent Lake of the Woods trip.
Following Joel will be Joel Henry,Tourism director for Lake of Woods on
the Minnesota side of Lake the Woods. So stay with us as life grows

(08:18):
Avid angler, hunter and outdoors person. Joe got to start pheasant hunting near
a cottage grove, Wisconsin with hisdad at an early age. Joe's dad,
Jerry, later purchased a great deerhunting place called Camp David, where
Joe and his brother spent a lotof time chasing whitetail deer. Joe loves
fishing in Canada with his wife,Rita, who is an excellent angler.
Also, Joe Cleansing, Welcome tothe show. Oh, Wally, great

(08:43):
to be talking with you today. Now, Joe, you recently were in
Canada and you sent me a lotof photos. How was your fishing trip
and where did you go? Oh, we had a wonderful trip. We
love fishing up in Lake of theWoods out of the Sabaskan Bay area.
So on the first trip this spring, we went up to Moonlight Bay Camp

(09:05):
that's on Raspberry Island. And ifyou remember back in the day, Wally,
we took out big boat two thousandout of Gills Marina and that's where
we launch out of Morrison, Ontario. Morris in Ontario, that is correct.
We travel up to bad Debt acrossthe border. There they got a
really nice crossing. It's a lotsmaller, quicker to get across than the

(09:30):
International Falls border. So that's thearea we like to go through every year.
Now, how many years have youbeen going to Canada? Oh,
Wally, We've been going up forover thirty years. I believe we do
two or three trips a year now, sometimes even four. But the next
one coming up is coming up ina in about a week and a half

(09:52):
and that's our couples group. We'vebeen going up with three or four different
couples for over twenty five years withthis group, so it's a lot of
fun. And what type of fishare you targeting generally? Well, we
love to fish walleye obviously. Welike to fish musky too. That wasn't
open on the first trip. Muskieopens up the third week of June every

(10:16):
year in the Lake of the Woodsarea. But so we're targeting walleye and
smallmouth bass and it's one of ourfavorites. We like to do it with
bass spinner baits and crank baits onrocks in shallow it's just a little different
bite than a jig bite. Well, walleyes can be really aggressive fish,

(10:37):
you know, and once you geton these bites with crank baits, spinner
baits, et cetera. They reallysmack it, don't they. Oh yeah,
it's a hard hit. It's whatmy wife Rita loves to do.
When we first started going there,we used to jig, but it's hard
to get her to jig now atthe bottom bounce. So it's usually casting
with cranks and with spinners. Andyou know, the big smalling are in

(11:00):
shallow this time of year, andyou're going to get a muskie too as
well. I can guarantee you that. And that's always a great time on
small tackle. Now there's you hadmentioned earlier there's some northern pike in the
area, but you target them alittle later on one of your next trips.
But you did get a big fortytwo incher And what did that come

(11:20):
on? That forty two came heraout of KVD crankbait leaderless. My wife,
I noticed was catching a few morefish than I was, and she
had a really light leader on.So I completely took my leader off,
and boy, I started catching fishright away and outfished her about two to
one after I changed up my presentation. That's unusual because Rita usually outfishes you.

(11:45):
From what I've heard, Well, whenever she's out fishing, me a
close attention to what she's doing. So, Joe, you and Rita own
a great restaurant called Off Broadway DraftHouse. It's over on the south side
of mannat near South Town. Whata great place. Where exactly is it
located. Well, we're, hencethe name listed, just off Broadway,

(12:11):
So we're at the south door corridorthere and if you were to turn it
the quick trip there, you'd endup right down at our location as you
head down to Lake Monona by theEster Beach area. We've been there since
two thousand. Did a complete revampon our restaurant nine years ago. We

(12:33):
saw a need for more of asupper club style. But we're open every
day at eleven and we're open sixdays a week, and it's been very
widely accepted and we have a lotof great guests and customers that come and
see us daily. Well, onething I really enjoy and Kate and I
love eating there. You are verygood to the community and giving back and

(12:56):
you do a lot of fundraising andwhat a neat thing to do. Do
you have anything coming out soon?Yeah? And actually we've got in July
coming up as our annual golf outing. It's July fifteenth. We're going to
hold that this year out at theEdgerton Country Club and it's for Alzheimer's Association.
We're going to give locally here andwe do a lot of other stuff

(13:20):
as the year goes on for Badgeron or Flight, and we like to
do things for teachers in the fallwhen they're going back to school to help
with supplies. And oh, we'vedone a lot of different different dog dog
groups do and yeah, it's agood time and it's always feels good to
give back. Wally and our customersreally step up to the plate and help

(13:41):
us. So give our listeners yourwebsite so somebody could get a hold of
Off Broadway Draft House, you bet. You can find us on Facebook of
course, and then www dot offBroadway draft House dot com. And like
you say, we're conveniently located rightoff Bite Loop so Lake Manona, so
you can bike right up as well. Fantastic, Hey, Joe, thank

(14:07):
you very much for taking time outand have a good week. That was
great. Wallie, thanks for lettingme be on the show. Appreciate it.

Here's two guys that are definitely afew worms shorts of a dozen for all
your walleye needs. Don't forget tocheck out the Max lur Humdinger Baits along
with their smile blades, which isdeadly on walleyes. While joining today in
Ultimate Outdoors Radio, are going totalk with Joe Henry, Tourism Direct for
Lake of the Woods, Minnesota.Been a while. Good morning, Joel

(16:03):
Good and more on there. Howyou nobuddy? Well good, I see
you're still plugging away up there.Joel Good. Good to see that.
I thought i'd give you a hollerand we talk about some walleyes, some
musky what's happening on your end ofthe lake there? Oh well, I'll
tell you so. First off,you know, the walleye capital of the
world. With all due respects tosome other good bodies of the water,
of course, but you know, walleys are really what steal most of the

(16:26):
attention in these parts. And fishing'sbeen good. I mean, we got
you know, the Deanairo will tellyou we have a very robust population of
walleyes, different size, structure andthings like that, and fishing them great,
you know. We and Lake ofthe Woods we have turtboats, so
turnaboots will go out from our resortsand and then of course a lot of
people will bring their private boats upas well, and just gold fishing,
you know. And you know wehave we have three parts to the Lake

(16:48):
of the Woods, Terry. Wehave the Ringy River it feeds Lake of
the Woods. We have Big TraverseBay, which is a big open basin.
It's about thirty miles north and southby about twenty five miles east,
big old basin. There a fewrestent up but really flat mud for the
most part. And the deepest spotin that entire basin is only thirty eight
feet of water. So the wholething is very prolific with life. And

(17:11):
then the third part of Lake ofthe Woods is that little tip that sticks
up into Canada to Minnesota and that'scalled the Northwest Angle. That's the northernmost
point of a contiguous US and that'swhere the fourteen thousand, five hundred and
fifty two Islands begin. Fish reportis fissure biting, very good walleys and
saggers. Right now. It's transitioningfrom a jig bite, which is normally

(17:32):
in that colder water, to aspinner bite. A lot of people are
switching over now to a like asinker or bottom bouncer and a spinner with
a crawler on a two holkarnas we'regetting fished. Interestingly enough, you know,
the fishing has been happening in abouttwenty one to twenty four feet water,
but this last weekend a bite crankedup at about five to nine feet
of water. Typically that's because theshiners are spawning. They will start spotting,

(17:56):
and of course, you know youknow this. Walleys are are based
on forage. They're going to gowhere the food is. Yeah, hey
Joe, So say for somebody itpulls their own boat up there. If
you get a blow day, likeyou know Travers Bay, which you know
I've fished with you, is therestill fish in the rainy river? Do
they do they stay there year round. I know they you know, they
run up there. But the fishthey do, yeah, yes, yep

(18:18):
they do. So you know alot of most of the fishing happens on
Big Traverse, you know, whenthe weather conditions are right, that's where
the big schools of walleys are.But yeah, there's all of the good
resident population of walleyes. There's agreat pike fishing, small mouth bass.
We have a very robust lake sturgeonfishery as well on the Rainy River and
Okay, in fact, they saythat there's over one hundred thousand lake sturgeon

(18:40):
over forty inches long in Lake ofthe Woods in the basin in the river.
So that starts, that kicks inJuly first, now, ok Yeah,
there's a lot of opportunities on theriver. And the other thing too
is people will use a leeward accessand fish a shoreline or we have some
big bay is like four Mile Bayand Zipple Bay that hold a good fishing
too. They're almost like in thelakes, so what I call them.
And if you're at the Angle tarry, you can hide in an island.

(19:03):
There's fourteen thousand islands, yes,I remember, there's I've seen like a
thousand on them, but not fourteen. Hey, Joe, let's jump over.
We have a lot of guys galsthat travel for muskie fishing. And
you mentioned the Northwest Angle. Youwant to talk a little bit about that.
Yeah, well, you know, for muskies. So what a lot
of musket anglers will do. Wehave about fifteen resorts up at the Northwest

(19:26):
Angle. Half of them are onislands up there in the US side,
half are on the mainland. Theycall Angle Inland and musky fishings. I
mean probably your listeners probably know this. If the musky fish Lake of the
Woods is a world class musky fisheryeah, I mean we it is really,
really, really good. Fourteen thousandislands, there's over sixty five thousand

(19:47):
miles of shoreline, neck down islands, rock, the transition to mud,
saddles, red cabbage. I mean, you name it and I'll tell you
what. We got a ton ofmuskies. The biggest musky I've heard of
coming out of the lake is aboutfifty seven inches. We get a lot
of fishes for past that fifty inchmark. You know, typical muskie fishing

(20:10):
culture. Most almost almost everybody isputting those fish back he minute and a
half left. You want to talkabout travel options to the Northwest Angle.
Yeah, you know what, Youget up a couple different ways if you
travel. If you drive up tothe Northwest Angle, you're going to travel
forty miles through Canada and then reenter the US up at the angle.
Kind of unique. It's called anexclave. So if you do that,

(20:32):
you need a passport, passport cardor enhanced driver's license, or you can
have a driver's license and an originalbirth certificate no dui. If you if
you want to boat up to theNorthwest Angle, you can stay in Minnesota
waters the whole way and you'll boatup forty two miles. So there are
ways to go around the islands andstuff if it's windy, and two good

(20:55):
options. Terry. Yeah, well, I'm glad we got that in there,
so we a lot of good info. Hey, Joe, working people
get a hold of you for moreinfo. If they're interested. You want
more info, check out our websiteand that is Lickadewood MN dot com.
All right, thanks Joe, youhave a good week. Take care,

wildlife. Get a hold of JohnO'Brien and Granpa Ray Outdoors. Captain Hey,
and this week's UDA. Once again, thanks to the public for a
fella out in Utah getting caught withalleged baiting violations. This is from the

(24:25):
Utah Wildlife Commission sixty two page report. It only took sixty two pages to
explain this guy's crime. Wally, and he was an outfitter, So yeah,
he was a busy fella. Theyactually have eleven witnesses to the alleged

(24:45):
violations on his ranch. But youknow, it's just NonStop, Wally,
with whether it's fishing, hunting violations, over bagging, over harvesting. There's
just no way that our wardens cankeep up with what's going on. So
uh yeah, So hats off toour warden that are staying busy building cases

(25:08):
against these violators. What else yougot, Wally, Well, we have
a saying, Captain, it's ifyou see something, say something. You
know, without the good sportsman outthere, a lot of these criminals would
go on and keep cheating, keepdoing this stuff. You know, it
seems seems to be the case.So otherwise, time for go ahead,

(25:30):
Wally, I got, well,go ahead do this. Bring Valley Kennel
Field Captain. Yeah, we'll do. Dakota Sunset Resort Walleye bite is good.
Uh on Devil's Lake, North Dakotajust had the recent Chamber of Commerce
tournament. And for people think thatthe the Devil's Lake is is not producing

(25:53):
Walleye as well, I'll tell youthere. The giants are in there.
You just have to figure them out. It's a pretty cool lake with the
amount. You know, it's likefishing a river, Wally, you can
just get away from people. Thereare so many backwater areas from the from
the lake being flooded. But otherwise, Wally, I got a quick deal

(26:15):
here. And this is pretty cool. Stories from the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources. They now have a programwhere people can sign up for a six
month archery course. So this isbasically to get hunters back into the field.
And it's a six month course wherethere are mentors, the d and

(26:37):
R Iowa personnel are there for educatingthem. But you basically there's a registration
fee of two hundred dollars and thenyou just have to purchase your hunting license
and so on. But basically theytake you through the first six weeks and
it's learning to be an archer, and then you go a field and then

(26:59):
over the course of this whole thing, I mean, they even teach you
about blood trailing and all this. Then they teach you how to cook the
venison, which is pretty cool. And one of the highlights of it is,
you know, they see about aseventy percent rate of these people that
go through their course of the purchasean archery tag and by the third year

(27:19):
it drops off a little bit,but still fifty percent of the people have
became hunters, So pretty unique idea. Maybe most states should start doing that.
That is very cool, probably alot of fun, Captain. This
week's winner of two spools of Finn'sBraid fishing line Braided in the US is

(27:40):
Brian Betrovic from Oregon, Wisconsin. So stop by a wilderness fishing game to
pick up your line and congratulations, thanks for listening to the show. Yep,
and I got another giveaway, apretty nice giveaway from middleton Ford Vortex
Optics, and that's a pair ofeight by twenty eight Vortex binoculars from Middleton
Ford, who, if you don'tknow, has a nice display room of

(28:03):
Vortex products. You can purchase therewhile you're getting your oil changed or anything
else. Just shoot me an emailCaptain at Ultimate Outdoors Radio. I'll take
the fifth email that comes in towin this pair of eight by twenty eight
binoculars. So thanks to the midFord and head over there and check things
out. Wally, Hey, Captain, are we going to have the kids

(28:26):
event out at Cleary Pond? Also, I heard we're going to do that
again, that's always a lot offun in Verona. Yes, and that
is August tenth, I believe itwas, yes, August tenth, and
that's kids can come out and fish. That's their annual fall open house.
So I mentioned it to some familiesalready August tenth and it starts at eight

(28:52):
till noon. And it's what agreat place to teach kids to fish.
Sean Cleary and Mike winnhim and thecrew let us come out there and that
is just full of fish. Whata great time that is. Captain.
Yeah, it's just it's a goodplace for to introduce kids to fishing because
it's really just easy. So hey, you know, Wally, we have
not had any nineteen forties law forquite a while because all these laws are

(29:17):
still in the books and all thesestates. So here's one from New York,
U slippers cannot be worn after tenPM. That's a law that's still
on the book. And the otherone is you may only water your lawn
if the hose is held in yourhand. Okay, what are you gonna

(29:38):
do tied around your neck or what? Come on? Man? In fact,
I don't forget, but that's lawsthat are still on the books doorsradio
