You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radioon a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again. Our resident guidesto the outdoors. The Captain Banned the
Wall Dog. Hey Good Saturday morning. This is Wally the Wall Dog Anty

(00:33):
along with Captain Terry Fry. Morning. Captain, Hey, good Saturday morning
to everyone in the outdoor world.I hope you're enjoying our summer weather.
Finally got a little bit of rainwhich possibly might have saved all the crops.
It's getting kind of brutal out there, but at least we're starting to
get some here and there. Butspeaking of brutal, tempts, um a

(00:58):
lot of fishing going on. We'restill talking fishing because there's just so much
going on. Our first guest,Chuck Pullman's going to talk about deep drive,
deep diving, crank bits for bass, going deep for bass, which
with these tempts, these bass willstart moving a little bit deeper and you
you got to get down there afterhim. And then we're gonna check in

(01:19):
talk with a fellow who recently hewas from Melrose Mandell Colton Costs. He
competed him and five of his friendsfrom Melrosemandurell High school competed in the world
and National finals in Lacrosse, Wisconsinthis past week and pretty exciting between three
and four hundred teams fishing bass.I'll tell you what an opportunity for these

(01:42):
kids to get into another type ofcurriculum besides just baseball football, and I
can you know by listening to thesekids, you can see a lot of
them if they move on to college, are going to be picking a college
with a fishing program. And we'regonna talk with Colton about you know,
maybe you want to try and dothat in your school. I think it's

(02:05):
a great idea to have these kidscompeting in the world and there was even
a gals team that was pretty excitingthat fish the final day. Otherwise,
we get to talk about gear everyweek. Now it's time for the Ultimate
gear Heads. This week's Gearheads segmentis pollowed by Middleton Poor Middleton, Wisconsin.

(02:25):
Hey, before you start spending allyour money on outdoor gear, have
the Ultimate Gearheads check it out. They will set you straight. Hey,
guys, you go head out thereand you pick out yourself up a new
truck. Middleton Motorsports would be theplace to get that baby all spiced up
with some goodies whatever you may need. Chuck and the boys over there will

(02:49):
take care of you. Nice addition, nice local addition to have a place
to do a lot of extra thingsfor that vehicle of yours. Wally Captain,
this week's really cool piece of gearis a crank bait. It's the
Ripolla DT ten series bluegill. TheRipolla DT dives to series of crank baits
dive fast and stay in the strikezone, making them one of the most

(03:13):
effective crank baits out in the market. The DT tin dives down to ten
feet and with its tapered body andthin tail design, it creates a deadly
side to side action. This lureis deadly on big summertime bass pike and
muskies. Captain, we'll be talkingabout it later in our show today.
Yeah, one of my go tobaits on the river. When the river

(03:35):
gets slow, these fish start tomove to the main channel. You gotta
get deep otherwise. Man. Aton of fishing going on. Good bites
reported everywhere in this area, throughoutthe whole state. You might as well
say bags on fire, Mendota's onfire. Lake Wisconsin's doing well. All
the river systems Mississippi River is onfire. Turn them at last week up

(04:00):
out of Lake Peppin. They usethe fish Donkey app. But thirty nine
pounds won that for five fish. Now that's a little bit inflated with the
fish Donkey app, but it wasprobably more like thirty five. But still
you're talking a nine pound average onthe Mississippi. So things are doing well
in the fishing world, Wally Captain. That fish Donkey app is kind of

(04:23):
interesting topic. As people fish tournaments, they enter their catches on there,
and it's all recorded on a app, you know, and you can see
who's leading and who's caught in thebiggest fish. It's pretty cool deal.
Oh it's all done on your phone. Yep. It is well. Otherwise,
in my travels, I always liketo check out the eagles and the

(04:45):
eagle nests, and I came acrossthe interesting story that actually, for the
first time in twelve years over inIowa, eagles that were hatched were below
fifty percent, which is really strange. And also they're saying other states like
Wisconsin. They found sixty five percentof Wisconsin nest failed in twenty twenty two,

(05:12):
compared to only nineteen percent in yearsbefore in Ohio the same thing.
They don't really give an answer forthis, but obviously the Eagles are taking
a little bit of hit. Asfar as reproduction. There so kind of
interesting story. I have not notseen as many eagles, that's for sure.

(05:33):
I have to believe moisture is abig part of it. That's the
one big duriable. It's been sodry. Maybe they can't find their game
and maybe it's just not good forreproducing right now. Yeah, stay with
us, folks. Chuck Pullman's goingto join us talk a deep diving crankbait.

tournaments. Chuck has written hundreds offishing articles in his career, and he
is currently one of the fishing prosat Wilderness Fishing Game in Sauk City,
Wisconsin. Chuck Pullman, Welcome tothe show. Thanks Wally, Thanks for

(08:43):
having me. Now, Chuck, you're an avid bass angler. What are
some of the most productive bass baitsright now for bass summertime? I like
crank bates on weed lines. Thatis my go to thing, okay,
And why do they work so wellthis time of year? Well, I

(09:03):
believe that when the water warms upas much as it has, they'll be
on weed lines are usually an edgethat goes into deep water, and they'll
be cooler water there, and thefish set up on those edges of the
weed lines in ambush of of anythinggoing by in that deeper water, and

(09:24):
I'll fish those I like using crankbaits. And weed lines on inland lakes
usually are ten to twelve feet righton the edges. So I'll set up
the boat like in about fourteen feetof water, and I'll cast parallel to
the weed lines. And I wantto use a bait that I can just
nick the bottom with and I wantto crank it fast because it's a reaction

(09:46):
type bite and that seems to workout really well. And the other thing
is is that it's a it's abig fish method. Very seldom will ever
catch a small fish. Well, you gotta like that. Now you'd like
the Rippola's right, DT tens andDT fourteens. And why do you like

(10:07):
those? In what color? Ilike the dts mainly because when you start
cranking him, it's a vertical. They go down really fast. Most crank
baits it'll take five to ten yardsof winding before it'll get down into the
strike zone. Dts dive real fast, and they'll get down in the strike

(10:30):
zone a lot sooner, and youspend a lot more time in the strike
zone. And I like depending onthe depth of the edge of the weed
lines, but usually I'll set upand like in about fourteen feet of water,
and I like using a DT sixteen. And I like to have that
bait nick in the bottom so thatkicks up a little bit of the silt

(10:50):
as you crank it in and Icrank it fast. Okay, huh makes
me want to go fishing. Whattakes you roden rail? And type of
line should we be using for thatdeep cranking? Well, I use a
bait cast off. It's I usea seven three medium heavy action rod,
and I lack a six three toone year ratio real I'm a thing.

(11:16):
And then I use ten pound testeither monofilament or floor carbon line. And
the reason I do that is thatmost of the heartbeats that are made for
bass fishing are designed to run onten pound test line, which means you
get the maximum depth out of that. If you use fifteen to twenty pound

(11:37):
tests, you're not going to getthat lure down to where it should be.
It's a ten pound just seems towork really good. Now, sometimes
you'll even catch two bass and onecrankbait. Chuck, Has that ever happened
to you? Yes, you cando that, you bet, Yeah,
that happened to me a couple times. One time that's memorable is the one

(11:58):
on Kentucky Lake when I was doingexactly the same thing and and I got
two of them and both of themwere over four pounds, which was which
was a thrill. I thought Ihad the biggest bass on in Kentucky Lake.
On Well, that'd be an eightpounder, which you'd be mighty big.
Yes, yeah, yea. Sonow when you're you're bombing out these

(12:22):
casts. You're using a sixty threeto one ratio reel. You're still running
the handle pretty quickly on your reel. Is it steady or do you put
any pauses in there? I don'tpause it at all. I crank it
steady and I crank it fast, and that seems to knock out the bass.
I don't. I don't pause it. Yeah, And then all of
a sudden, out of nowhere, you got the fish hanging on there,

(12:43):
and it really smacks ye. LikeI said, it's a reaction type bite.
And when they hit that thing,Neil hit, it's a ton.
There's no question in your mind thatyou got one. You know. It's
it's really an aggressive bite. Andsometimes you're going to catch big pike muskies
also doing that, aren't you.Yes, yes, well I've done that

(13:03):
several times on Manona especially. Umyou get those muskies that'll that'll definitely be
after the same type of thing. So, yeah, that's happened many times.
How about that bluegill color? Isthat a good color? Bluegill color
is my favorite color, mainly becausethat's the forage base of most lakes.
Any lakes that's got got bluegills,in it. That's a that's a good

(13:26):
forage base for bass I and Ilike that color and it's been very successful
for me, so I stick withit. You know. It's a confidence.
Well, Chuck, you told meto get some, so I got
four of them now in bluegils,So I'm going to put those to work.
Definitely. This is a time allsummer long now from now until right
up until September. That's that's mygo to bait. Chuck. Thank you

(13:52):
very much for taking time out andgood luck out on the water. All
right, Thanks Wally, Folks, that was Chuck Pullman. Stay two own,

to you for you. Hey,we got a pretty cool interview and a
few folks did not realize it.The High School World and National Championships was

(15:48):
in Lacrosse, Wisconsin last week. And we actually have a young fellow that
goes to Melrose Mundurro School, whichis kind of up in that Sparta Holman
Air area. Colton Costs is gonnajoin us and we're gonna Colton and a
few of his teammates fish this sowe're gonna gonna get his thoughts on the
whole thing. Good morning, Colton, Good morning, I's gone. We're

(16:12):
doing well, Colton. Well youare recovering from four hot days of fishing
in the boat. So as faras teams that competed, was there between
like three to four hundred teams?Colton? Yeah, just about there,
like three hundred and ninety something.Yeah. And and the neat thing about

(16:34):
this program is they award three pointthree million dollars in scholarship and prizes.
But Colton, I know you mentionedat takeoff you with that many boats,
you had to wait like two hours? Was that correct? Yeah, it
was a while. If you wereone of the lower boat numbers. You
had to wait for two to twoand a half hours. So also,

(17:00):
this is a high school fishing programat mel Rose mnduro. Do you want
to mention the other five team membersthat participated. Yeah, So in my
boat with me was Lane Fry andthen there's two other boat captains that had
Eric and Jay stats or Eric Kurzberg, and then the other boat had Jacob
Tessin and wait, actually it wasum Jacob and Eric Kurzberg and then it

(17:25):
was Corbin and Jay Statser Okay, yeah, and this, um, this
is this format is basically if aif a high school has a fishing program,
you can you can compete in this. Uh last year, I forget
where it was at down South Kentuckywherever? Um? How about teams?

(17:47):
Um? And these teams came fromthe US and also other countries correct.
Yeah, there was a team fromAfrica, Zimbabwe, Africa, and a
couple teams from Canada. I think, wow, cool? And then I
hear was there like four thousand peopleat the rules meeting? Yeah? There,

(18:10):
it was busy there, It waspacked in there. It was at
the Omni Center in Alaska. Ni'sfallen there. Yeah. So Colton,
the format of this was is youhad a boat captain and actually, uh,
my son Trusting was your boat captain. M Yeah, and what happens
wasn't mind. But he was oneof them. Yep. Oh okay,

(18:32):
got youa um, yeah, hewas one of them. So basically explain
the format. You have a boatcaptain, but he can't fish, and
then and so on you want toexplain that a little bit. Yeah,
so, um, each two fishermenhave a boat captain and then they they
can they can't fish, but theycan like help you a little bit and

(18:52):
like tying your lures on and stuff, but they can't do any fishing or
anything. And then they can justdrive the boat pretty much. Yeah.
So can they give you advice asto where you might want to fish or
is that up to YouTube felt YouTubehigh school young anglers. No, they
can give you advice like where tofish, where to cast, stuff like

(19:15):
that. Okay, So we gota couple of minutes left, Colton.
I wanted to ask you, so, looking back at this after four days
and ninety degree weather and you knowit was some long days. You guys
launched at five thirty, you know, what's what's your thoughts on looking back
at that is it's something that Imean, I'm I'm betting that you know,

(19:37):
most kids would be pretty excited aboutit. Yeah, it was super
exciting. I will for sure wantto go back next year if we have
the chance, but I'm not surewe will. I think it's down south
again. So yeah, and youknow a lot of this what happens is
these teams are sponsored because they don'tthey have this World Finals somewhere in the

(20:00):
US every year. So really, but Colton, um, I'm guessing that
you know, after going through this, and um, I'm sure that kids
that are listening are parents that wantto possibly create a phishing team in their
school. You would definitely say it'sit's well worth pursuing that to have the

(20:21):
kids to be able to do afishing team for their schools. Correct.
Yeah, for sure, it's great. It's a great opportunity. It's super
fun. So one more thing,Colton, So in your fishing school at
mel Rosemond Durall, do you guyshave like monthly competition or how does this
work when you create the so calledphishing team school? Oh well, just

(20:49):
pretty much whoever wants to do itcan do it. But if in the
next few years, we might getlike a few too many kids, so
then we'll have to like the underclassmen. We'll get their chance when they're like
overclassroom like juniors and seniors, sothey might not be a bowl fish for
the first couple of years unless wefind more boat captains. I think ye.

(21:11):
Well, Colton, I appreciate youjoining me on Ultimate Outdoors Radio.
I followed you guys. It waspretty exciting, and I believe you're gonna
have a great future in the fishingworld. So you have a good summer
and we appreciate you jumping olymous.Yeah, thanks for having me. Yeah,

two guys that spends so much timeoutdoors. When they get home, their
wives say, haven't you left yet? This is Ultimate Outdoors Radio. Hey,
welcome back and thanks for listening.Folks do some incredibly stupid things outdoors
and now it's time. Now it'stime for the Ultimate Dumbas segments. This

(23:04):
segment is brought to you by GrampaRay Outdoors. If you've considered putting food
plots on your property, get ahold of John O'Brien Grampa Ray Outdoors.
He is an expert to be gladyou even come out to your property and
give you some great advice. CaptainWell, and this week's UD a kind
of surprising. This story popped upafter I was just talking about the lock

(23:25):
to Flambeau tribes last week with closedroads and boat landing fees that if you
you fish one lake you know adozen times, will cost you two hundred
bucks to launch your boat, twentyfive dollars for every three launches. So
it's kind of funny. But alot of chatter going on about illegal spearing
at night, and here two lockedFlambeau men got sighted for trout or walleye

(23:52):
spearing on Trout Lake. This isa very long story, but basically they
got a hot tip. A wardenwent headed over to the lake one evening,
saw lights on the shoreline. Hecalled in back up. He can
h he could hear the spear hittingthe rocks when they were throwing it,
but this was a lake that theyweren't supposed to be taking any more walleyes

(24:17):
off of. But he called inbackup, used their night vision to get
within fifteen twenty feet of them, called out, said it's police. Raise
your hand, and one guy jumpedin the water and swam across, so
they get apprehended later, didn't heYeah, they were eventually caught. But
there's two or three different stories aboutthis illegal spearing going on. And man,

(24:44):
I'll tell you that they're just notcreating good relationships with people in the
public with what's going on with thespearing and the road closures and the boat
landing fees. And I understand theirboat landing fees, but you know a
guy that puts in docks, they'regoing to charge him three hundred and fifty
dollars a year just to access aboat landing to put in docks for people.
But it goes on and on.It is what it is, and

(25:07):
I don't think it's ever gonna change. So yeah. Otherwise, Wally,
it's time now for the Dakota SunsetResort Report. Talking to Sean Timmins this
past week, Devil's Lake Captain hasreally been amazing this year. They're still
casting crank baits on windy shorelines, catching a lot of quality fish from that

(25:30):
seventeen to twenty two inch size andalso plastics are working, like the paddle
tails and other plastics. But thefishery out there is really exploded. Of
course, there's lots of perch andpike in there too, But the Walleyes
captain right now are really going totown. Yep. Something I want to

(25:51):
mention that's going to be coming upin the future. I have a pretty
cool interview and for you people thathave not followed the corner crossing case in
the Western States, I'm gonna dobe doing a double interview with the backcountry
hunters who supported these four hunters whowere charged for basically crossing a fence that

(26:14):
was public private fence, so andand this has been ongoing. It's called
the corner crossing where you legally youcannot legally step across a fence from public
to public when there's private land involvedthere. So that's gonna be a pretty
interesting interview. And actually it wasa win for the hunters as they were

(26:37):
eventually the charges were dropped, butthere was also a seven million dollar lawsuits.
So that's gonna be coming up inthe next couple of weeks. You're
gonna want to follow. Otherwise,Wally quick deal on some shows Wisconsin Ice
Fishing Show December eight nine ten Waterfalland that's an Osh Goosh Waterfall Expo in

(26:59):
Oscar August twenty five, twenty six, and we'll be at Clary Open House
August fifth, plus the kids fishing. You can order a new building on
site. Yep. The Family FishingDay Captain is on the fifth then from
nine to noon and it's free comingout to the Clary Pond and the Captain
I will be out there helping kidscatch fish. Yep. Otherwise, some

(27:23):
good news about you know a lotof nonprofits and businesses keep conservation rolling.
Here. The Henry Firearms donated twohundred and twenty thousand to Arkansas's Children Hospital
in Nebraska Cancer Center. So here'sanother story that gets overlooked, but a

(27:45):
lot of that going on to helpconservation. So so became a conservation Captain.
Pheasants Forever completed a six year calledthe Uplands Campaign. It generated five
hundred and sixty five million dollars forthe mission that they have which has helped
restore, enhance and protect more thaneleven million acres of upland habitat. So

(28:07):
everybody has really chipped in and thisis amazing accomplishment for Pheasants Forever. It's
great Sam Sam with the Oak Foundation. Heyfore we get out of here.
Nineteen forties law. We haven't talkedabout it. In Baltimore, you cannot
spit on a city roadway, spiton a sidewalk, and you cannot curse
while you're in the city limits. That law is still on the book,

(28:30):
so make sure you abide by that. In Maryland, Hey, it's a
great Saturday. Thanks for joining us. Well, that's another show on this
stream. She around the Campfire.Don't forget to catch us on the neck
