You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radioon a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again. Our resident guidesto the outdoors, The Captain Banned the
Wall Dog. Hey, good Saturdaymorning. This is Wally the wall Dog

(00:33):
Bamthony along with Captain Terry Fry Morning. Captain, Hey, good morning,
wall Dog morning everyone in the outdoorworld. Well things are growing, including
the mosquitoes. The corn's happy, the lflf was happy, and all the
food plots. So getting some niceraining. We really did need that heat
to get this stuff going as faras mainly crop, so that was that

(00:57):
was good stuff. But all andI are actually out at Cleary Building Corp.
Today with the open house and kidsfishing, I think our thirteenth Annuel,
so we'll talk about that. Butotherwise in our first segment, Wally
and I are going to chat aboutour ideas on well where you can take

(01:19):
kids fishing and what you need totake kids fishing, because I guess today
is a kid's fishing day on UltimateOutdoors Radio. So we're going to give
you some hot tips in the areawhat to use and get these kids hooked
on fishing because we get to witnessa lot of good success stories. Our
second guest, and this is somethingthat's an interesting story, probably never been

(01:41):
done before. And I'm going totalk with Zach Keys out of the state
of Wyoming. And he came upwith a program it's called let a Deer
Walk Raffle. Behind that story becauseof the amount of winter kill in the
Western states, Northwest Colorado, nWyoming. I mean they're talking some of
those areas they've lost three cars oftheir mule deer. He came up with

(02:01):
an idea to have people turn theirtags back in and basically send your tag
to Zach. And he has createda chest of twenty two Raffle prizes including
outfit or hunts and all sorts ofgood stuff. And he is getting tags

(02:22):
left and right that yes, theguy buys his tag, but he decides
not to hunt and he turns itto Zach to be in the Raffle.
Pretty interesting program. But otherwise everyweek we get to talk about gear.
Now it's time for the Ultimate gearHeads. This week's Gearheads segment its bellowed
by Middleton fol Middleton wistunts. Hey, before you start spending all your money

(02:45):
on outdoor gear, have the UltimateGearheads check it out. They will set
you straight. Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton forward sticker.
You paid too much wallet. Hey, Captain, this week's really cool piece
of gear. It's a fishing reel. It's the Uma AV twenty five Avenger
open faced spinning reel. This affordablereel features precision elliptical gearing system and cyclonic

(03:08):
flow rotor that creates less line frictionduring the cast. The Kuma AV twenty
five hundred has a five point zeroto one gear ratio, six ball bearings
plus one anti reverse roller bearing. It has a very smooth drag system and
costs from fifty dollars to eighty dollarsdepending on the size and the model.
Captain, the Avenger is a greatreel. Wally. That word cyclonic Can

(03:32):
you spell that for me? Thatwould be CycL o N I C.
I'm surprised I pronounced the right. But it's kind of an the purpose.
It's an open design, so ifyour reel gets wet, it can kind
of breathe and dry out quickly sothe parts don't get corroded and stuff.

(03:53):
So that's kind of cool. Yep. Otherwise, I want to remind people
we are at Cleary Building Wally andI kids fishing today starting at nine o'clock
till noon. Clearly Building carp openhouse nationwide. We're gonna be in Verona,
Wisconsin. You can just get inthere, design your building, really

(04:14):
great setup to kind of see what'sout there. And obviously, Wally,
kids can still come out and fishwith us because it's early on Saturday morning
though. Yeah, we recommend youbring your own poles if you have them,
and we have got a few extrathat you can use. We'll bring
along. We'll provide the live baitand all the fish you are caught and
released, but bring your phone oryour camera because Kenn, we get some

(04:35):
awful great pictures out at the ClearlyPond at the family fishing event. Yeah,
and we love to feature feature thosekids on our rotating website banner and
on Facebook. We'll do maybe doa couple of short interviews and put them
on our social media pages. Otherwisein the news, Walley remaining Colorado Big
Game licenses go on sail August first, so there's still a chance to get

(05:00):
some type of license. Here's someinteresting info, Wally, and with all
the bad news shortage of live baitin Minnesota, licensed trappers has declined by
a third. From there was threehundred and eighty four licensed minto and leech
trappers in two thousand and ounce downto two hundred and thirty three in two

(05:21):
twenty two. That was leech trappingis declined by twenty five percent. So
it might be Wally where I guess, And that's because these lakes and stuff
are just drying up backwaters. Maybewe're gonna be fishing plastics the rest of
our live. Wally, Well,no wonder why you can't get nice sized
leeches. They're all small to mediums. No larger jumbos this year. Yeah.

(05:44):
Hey, coming up in the firstsegment, Wally and I are going
to chat about hot tips on whereyou can take your kids fishing here in
southern Wisconsin. Stay with us.Do you ever think about how many ways
we use the word house in sports? Protect this house in music, burning
down, the house at a restaurant, it's on the house. At Clary,

(06:05):
we use it a little differently.A shouse is a house with a
storage shed connected. It's the bestcombo of living space and storage, and
we build them every day at Clary. Speaking of house, get the best
prices of the season during the ClaryOpen House sale Fogus third through the fifth,

Vortex Optics dot com and check themout. Captain Hey, and this week's
segment of the show, here weare actually Wally and I are going to

(08:24):
talk about fishing destinations for families andkids. Being we are at the Cleary
open House today. We tape thesegment and for you folks that might not
have made it out here, we'regoing to give you some ideas on maybe
where to go, where to takeyour kids to fish off shore, maybe
thoughts on hiring a guide to introducethose to introduce your kids to fishing.

(08:50):
Both Wally and I do a lotof family trips and so on, and
Wally, we'll talk a little bitabout what you can expect in a bolt,
which is a great venue to takeyour family. But so Wally,
let's let's chat a little bit ofyou know, we we both do a
lot of kids fishing events and uh, it's always fun to see to see

(09:11):
families out there. So you know, for people who don't have a boat,
Wally, it's it's there's there's amillion places you can go fish off
shore, off docks, off parksand so on to get those kids introduced.
You know, just to mention afew Captain if you're looking to take
your kids out. Um, there'sa nice fishing pond on Allan Boulevard in

(09:31):
Middleton. Up in Stuck City, there's a brand new Culver Community Park which
has been stocked heavily with fish.On Lake Wisconsin, you can go to
Moon Valley there's a nice public fishingpier. There also Merrimack Park on Lake
Wisconsin good fishing opportunities. Um you'vegot Lake Marion and Maison Maini, which

(09:52):
is a real nice stock pond.Um Devil's Lake is another good place to
go. So basically, when you'retaking kids out, makes you're bringing some
food and snacks along. Keep itsimple, you know, don't plan on
a whole day. Plan on afew hours with the kids and see how
they like it, and bring yourcamera. It's so great to get pictures
of kids holding fish and with abig smile on their face. Captain,

(10:16):
these are memories that will last youfor a lifetime. Well, when I
think of, you know, kidsfishing Walley and all the kids fishing events
we have done, I think backabout Lake Mary and one of the first
ones we had done where we gaveout a whole bunch of Kuma fishing rods,
and I remember driving and we actuallyit wasn't just both parents. Sometimes
mothers were bringing their kids. AndI always remember the day after the event,

(10:41):
I drove by Lake Mary and Isee a couple of mothers out there
fishing with their kids the next daywith some of the poles that we gave
them Kuma Kids rods and that, you know, so you kind of,
you know, accomplish something. Yougot that family hooked on fishing, and
and the thing about it is it'sthe idea of just getting them outside.

(11:03):
And while you know, for yousaw a lot of equipment, but for
parents that might want to look ata low end price, just a kid's
fishing rod. What would you suggestmaybe a five foot or five and a
half foot or something. Yeah, something was six pound test And you can
keep it simple, captm just abobber, split shot and a hook.

(11:26):
Bring some live bait along, youknow, like red worms are very good
for catching bluegills or piece of anightcrawler. And then as you get more
into it, you can use someof the Berkeley power baits like the little
twister tails inch and a half thatcome in the jar or so simple to
work with and the fish really lovethem. And it's good to target panfish
probably first because they're so plentiful, and Wisconsin bluegills really stick out to me.

(11:50):
They're plentiful. It's nice to maybekeep ten for a fish fry.
And that's another aspect if you canteach kids to filate fish, and of
course mom and dad can fry themup and then you can enjoy that whole
harvest another time. So the fishfry, which is tradition Friday nights in
Wisconsin with blue Girls, is fantastic. So, Wally, why don't you

(12:13):
just touch We got a minute anda half? So or about you know,
people want to hire a guide likeyourself or something. What can they
expect for a family excursion and aguide boat pan fishing on one of the
area lakes. Well, if youdo hire a guide, expect to be
wearing some life jackets because we teachsafety right away. Wear your life jacket
the whole time. And what youknow, we'll have a variety of rods

(12:37):
rigged up for kids. But youknow, the old pushbutton spin cast is
okay, But I'd like to teachkids how to use spinning reels, how
to set the drag, how toset the hook, and how to handle
a fish because a spinning performs better, the drag systems are more consistent than
a spin cast. So and usuallywhen kids are getting you know, from

(12:58):
seven to ten years old, they'restarting to get some patience to them.
So it's good to put them onfish right away and get him started and
you know, get photos and teachthem to catch and release. It's it's
pretty valuable. It's fun well,Wally, and I from the ones I
have done with families, and youknow, the camaraderie when the parents and
the kids are both in the boatand they're you know, they're both teasing

(13:22):
each other and making bets and thisand that, and you can see that,
you know that that family's gonna neverhave an issue with, you know,
getting outside and enjoying it. Sootherwise, just get your kids out
there fishing. That's basically what we'retrying to tell you. Wally, yep,
and enjoy the rest of your summerand thanks for listening. Hello,

Zachary Key and Zachary actually lives inWyoming. We're gonna talk a little bit
about the winter kill out there thispast winter, and Zach has come up

(15:43):
with an idea that it's pretty prettypretty cool and we're going to talk about
that and that's hopefully to save someof the population. So good marnin Zach.
Very good morning guys. So Zach, let's kick this off. Do
you want to talk a little bitabout the winter kill in Wyoming and obviously
a lot of other states too.How how bad it was out in your

(16:04):
area? Yeah, so, Imean it was, it was. It
was one of the worst I've seen. Um we had. Uh you know,
I've been here Wyoming native, beenhere thirty eight years and uh,
I've never seen anything like it,you know before in my life. I
mean just you know, went outand did a little antler hunting on me
first and I mean just you knowthe amount of carcasses and everything you see

(16:29):
this year compared to years and pastis it's not even not even the same,
it's not even sixes. Well andI if these numbers are correct,
you mentioned maybe only six thousand muledeer survived and probably twenty one hundred of
those are bucks. I mean, that's insane for a state deer population,
you know. Yeah. So sothat that population is is uh mainly the

(16:55):
Wyoming uh Wyoming range. So that'sfrom okay, basically Bonderrant to Kimmer,
Wyoming. So the crazy part isthat is one hundred and fifty miles in
that zone. And uh, youknow that that hurts to be at sixty
thousand, and you know last yearit was at just under thirty thousand.

(17:17):
Now we're down to six thousand supposedlyaccording you know to estimations, which yeah,
I mean it's it's two thousand andtwenty one hundred bucks and you figure
in G and H those two ranges. They um they issue you know,
general tags over the counter that theyestimated around five thousand residents hunt the units

(17:38):
and then they and then there's alsoseven hundred and fifty non resident tags at
hunt the unit. So you dothe quick math. Yeah, you can
see why I came up by program. Yeah, well we're going to talk
about that right now. Zach.Uh, you came up with a pretty
interesting program that I don't think anyonehas ever tried to pull off for and
it's called let a deer Walk programs. Go ahead and tell us about that,

(18:00):
Zach, Let a deer Walk program. Yeah. So essentially, you
know, just doing the quick math, it's like, you know, I
knew that, you know, wehad to do something. I know how
hard it is to you know, for the game of Fish. They still
have to have a budget in TACthey still have to be able to run
their operations and do conservation projects andstuff and everything else. And I just

(18:22):
felt like, you know, wehad to do something, and you know,
I didn't want them to shut down, you know, hunting. I
mean, I'm I'm a hardcore hunteras it gets. So I kind of
come up with this mixture. It'slike, we can you know, a
person can buy their tag, theycan turn it into me and that still
funds the game and fishes eighty milliona year budget. And uh, but

(18:45):
at the same time, you turnyour tag into me, and you're eligible
for over one hundred and eleven thousanddollars worth of prizes at the moment,
and uh, you know, there'sabout twenty prizes, you know, and
they're all they're all really interesting. And you turn your tag in and I
call it let a deer walk becauseyou're gonna let a deer walk for the
year. You know. I've hada lot of pressure from people asking me

(19:07):
to do it two or three years, but you know, right now,
this is a one year program.So well, I think it's a pretty
cool format because, let's face it, there's a lot of hunters who really
want to try and do something whenyou have that type of winter kill.
Hey, Zach, we got abouttwo minutes a little less talk about some

(19:27):
of the prizes and why people mightwant to turn their tag and so as
far as surprises we have, Idid get some support from one of the
way I'm in getting fish commissioners. He's new into the position. We've got
a commissioner tag, which those thingsare going pretty thousand. I've even seen
him go as much as fifty thousandper commissioner tag. That's antelope, deer,

(19:49):
or elk. You just pick yourunit in the state and then you
can at unit. That's kind ofthe one of the larger things. We
have a Polarist four fifty four.We have a full beef cut, wrapped
and froze. We have a customedtruck build that you drop your vehicle,
your suv or your truck off totruck Kings and they completely customize it.

(20:12):
Your leveling kit, lift kit, tires, wheels, gosh and camel packages
and four outfitted onnts wolffront to Alberta, Canada. I mean just you know,
the stuff is insane and I thankthose guys so much for believing in
me and supporting me, because Icouldn't do this without them. You know.

(20:33):
Yeah, hey, Zach, wegot about thirty seconds. So if
people might want to kind of foleyou, do you have a website or
do you have Facebook? Obviously somepeople that don't live in Wyoming, but
you know, some other people mightwant to try and do this program also
in different states. Absolutely, um, so I don't have a website.
I did turn my Facebook it's justZachary Key here in Wyoming. I did

(20:56):
turn it to a public settings,so you know, people can friend in
and see what's going on. Soall right, Hey, Zach, I
think we'll probably have you back onmaybe later on this fall to kind of
follow up on your program. Prettycool idea, and I say hats off
to you for you know, goingabout getting those donations and obviously you guys

(21:18):
are going to save hundreds of deerthere. So you have a good,
good summer here and web we'll talkthis fall. Okay, thanks for having
me on, guys. Bet Hey, that was Zach Riekey in the state

much time outdoors when they get home, their wives say, haven't you left

thanks for joining us. You know, people do some incredibly stupid things outdoors,
and now it's time. Now it'stime for the Ultimate Dumas segment.

(23:36):
This segment is brought to you byGrampa Ray Outdoors. You've ever thought about
putting food plots and improving your property, Give John O'Brien a call at Grampa
Ray Outdoors and he'll give you somegreat ideas. Captain Hey, on this
week's UDA Wally, I don't Iprobably should have changed us UDA bands were
doing a kids fishing won't wing itanyway, So this is a sorry about

(24:02):
two up in Alaska, two Fairbanksmen were indicted for illegal outfitting, including
bear hunting, prostitutes, and gallbladders. Now isn't that a combination?
But they sent in two what's that? What they heck? So they sent
in two undercover wardens who ended uppaying these guys a total of sixty thousand

(24:26):
dollars. And during and after theythey paid him the final deposit, they
found out later that in the daythat a guy went and bought a Mercedes
with the cash they gave him.So this was quite a large sting operation
going on here. So during thehunt, which I've never heard of this

(24:49):
from an outfit of deal. Duringthe hunt, they offered prostitutes for eighteen
hundred dollars a night. So well, you know, I guess all the
skies will live it, you know, whatever. But anyway, there's some
chargers pending, so we'll see howthat one all plays out. Yeah,

(25:12):
So and holy smoked, time forour Spring Valley Go ahead, Wally,
Yeah, it is time for aSpring Valley Kennel field Report. If you
happen to be traveling or going onvacation, which a lot of people do
this time of the summer, youneed a great place to board your dogs,

(25:33):
contact Sean or Linda Timmins in BlueMountains, Wisconsin at the Spring Valley
Kennel. They can take over sixtydogs at a time. They exercise them
constantly and feed them well. Captain, and they even play him some country
music, yes, sir, yeah, Wally, maybe some of them.
Maybe there's more of the stuff goingon that we know. Guys are hunting
with outfitters all the time. Idon't know, but AnyWho, Hey,

(25:56):
some breaking news coming from Max Lurand they just released two new baits and
I actually got to fish the prototypeof the one called the Spin Drift and
basically it is a blade loaded ontoa jig so you get you get the
spin effect, the vibration effect witha jig because it's a milar blade.

(26:21):
It's the one point one which isnot real big, and it's above the
jig. And actually I believe itwas the first or second cast. I
fished it before they finally got tothe final product and caught a walleye the
first or second one. But Ilove it because you can feel the bat.
It's more, it's almost a combojig in reaction bait. And then
they came out with another product calledthe Smile Blade SD hitch and what this

(26:45):
is This is about a one towell it's probably yeah inch and a half
wire with beads and a blade onand you can attach this to absolutely every
bait. You can put it infront of a crank bait in front of
a blade jig, which you probablywouldn't want to do in front of a
blade jig in front of a jig, but possibly anything you can throw out
there, even a frog you can. You can attach this to the front

(27:08):
of the bait. And what's nice, Wally, is you can change out
your baits behind it real easily. It's just got a slide on clip um,
so you can if you want tochange jig colors, you don't have
to. It's not even a snap, it's it's a wrap around clip.
Very cool, and they are sellinglike hotcakes. I doctor Bobby Loomis and

(27:29):
things are going well. So that'sgood stuff. Well, Captain, you
gave me one of those to try. I gotta get that tight on an
orange one. That's the spin driftat one point one bladed jig. And
certainly if you're fishing some deeper water, adding some noise and motion to your
bait is gonna track fish from agreater distance. So I think that thing's
got a huge future, Captain. It's gonna drive the bas nuts, well,

(27:52):
drives anything nuts, because it's acombo. It's a combo, and
that the milar blade doesn't hardly needany to spend otherwise, Wally, I
see that Florida has now banned bearhunting. Their hunt is canceled. Anti
hunters jumped in on this, gotit canceled. So they are going to

(28:15):
manage their bear population by education andnon lethal means. Good luck with that.
They get almost six thousand bear callsa year. And this tells you
what's happening in all these states,Wally. These these anti hunters and stuff
are coming in and they're shutting downhunts. So can you imagine the amount
of dollars that are going to bespent educating people on bears and non lethal

(28:41):
I mean, these bears are goingto multiply like rabbits, so I guess
until they you know, a fewof them kill the neighbors dogs or whatever.
But that's just the way she's gonethese days, Wally. Well,
six thousand incidents is gonna be timesten if they don't manage the bear.
Yeah. Hey, folks, comeClary Building Corp. Otherwise, have a

(29:04):
great Saturday and enjoy this weather.Well that's another show on the streaming.
Love she around the campfire and don'tforget to catch us on the neck at
