You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radioon a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again. Our resident guidesto the outdoors the Captain and the Wall
Dog, Hey good Saturday Morning. This is Wally the Wall Dog bamped me

(00:33):
along with Captain Terry Fry Morning,Captain, Hey Goodborne, Wally, everyone
else out there. I hope you'reenjoying the Saturday morning. Actually, can
you believe it's almost September? First, it's really seems crazy that all the
hunting seasons are opening up here inthe Midwest West. Guys getting gearing up

(00:54):
for elk season. But so we'regonna talk a little bit about archery.
We're gonna talk a little bit aboutdogs manufacturers. Rep. Keith Beam is
gonna join us dull Archery season chatterand once again think put safety at the
top of your list with these treestands. Make sure you're strapped in all
the way up, all the waydown. We always preach about that.

(01:15):
And then we're gonna go to theducks with Brian Steetzer, great sponsor Ultimate
Outdoors Radio, High Brest Sporting Dogshead over our website. Uh. Brian
is a duck hunting fanatics a greattrainer. Uh yeah, there there goes
one out where's the gunshot? Butyeah, yeah, that was probably a

(01:41):
deal. It went by Brian trainsall year long, so he can definitely
help you whether it's a family dog. But always good to see what he
is seeing out there with these dryweather and backwaters drying up. But otherwise,
every week we get to talk aboutgear, No, which time for
Ultimate Gearheads. This week's gearhead segmentis followed by Middleton four Littleton, Wisconsin.

(02:07):
Hey, before you start spending allyour money on outdoor gear, have
the Ultimate gearheads check it out. They will set you straight. Hey,
folks, you don't see that MiddletonFord sticker. And you know, being
in September, it's really not tooearly to think about your vehicle for winter
travel. Most of you know, trying to get an appointment seems to be

(02:29):
a one or two week deal withthe mechanics situation these days, So not
a bad idea to look at yourtires and your radiator and all good stuff
and get a step ahead of everyoneelse. Wally, what do we got
today, well, Captain, thisweek's really cool piece of gear is a
crossbow. It's the ten point Nitrofive. Oh, five. The Nitro

(02:49):
five oh five is the fastest crossbowin the world. With its reverse draw
design and a bunch of other greatfeatures, it is extremely accurate. Included
in the Nitro five oh five packageis a one hundred yard Evil x Marksman
Elite scope with rock solid scope mountingsystem. The ten point Nitro five O
five as a smooth two stage triggerwith a roller sear system for greater trigger

(03:12):
control which increases long range accuracy.Silent cocking and decocking with ten points aqu
slide system makes us an incredible crossbow. Captain Wally, that sounds like a
rifle to me. They're getting veryhigh tech but used in the right hands,
and it can be a very lethalweapon. But you know, Captain,

(03:36):
some of these you can shoot abeer can at one hundred yards,
right. We still tell people notto shoot a deer more than thirty yards
with a cross bowl because they makea lot of noise when you shoot,
and the deer can squad and jumpand run. So, you know,
shooting at a static talk is onething, but a live animal is different.
So practice following shoot thirty yards andin yeah, when you mentioned that,

(03:58):
I'll think of what sewn Timmins. You know, he does a lot
of tracking for deer, and Ilearned more from Sean at his seminar just
from him for deer recovery with archeryhunters, and he said, one of
the biggest thing is these cross bowlsmake just a hair more noise, so
he sees the deer jumping the stringmore and that's why. Yet, you

(04:18):
know, the fifty yard shots witha crossboat just gives them a little bit
more chance to jump that string andthen you end up with a with a
bad shot. So and I've noticedthat I've shot both. But he said
normally if he loses a deer alot of times it can be a crossbow
shot because of because of the noise, and we all know how quick those

(04:42):
deer are to squat down and stuff, you know. Along that line.
Sean Timmins also mentioned he likes onepiece solid broadhead on a crossbow like a
Montech something like that, versus expandableones because the crossbow boat is so short
and it's traveling it had high rateof speed, it can deflect easy when
the blades deploy. So that's somethingelse he discovered in his tracking that solid

(05:08):
heads seemed to make a better hitsometimes, so consider those, yeah,
especially if it's a little bit ofa you know, especially with a large
animal like an elk or moose orsomething. I'm kind of hearing that.
Otherwise, I got a bizarre storyWally for this first segment. And here
it is where there was this landownerand actually I not see where that was,

(05:30):
but he had a dispute with awaterfall guide. So he took his
dual axle tractor and disc and hehe disked the goose decoys down while everyone
watched, including the sheriff. Nothingthey could do about it, but the
landowner was pissed off, and hetook the big tractor out and mowed him
down there. Oh many, Hey, coming up, Keith Beam, We're

(05:55):
gonna talk a little bit about somearchery season. Stay with us. Hi,

(08:33):
Keith is an avid white tailed deerhunter with a bow and has over one
hundred and thirty wild turkey kills tohis credit by way of bow and arrow.
Keith being welcome to the show.Well, thank you, Hi,
I appreciate you having me on again, Keith. First I got to ask
what do you do for a living? And what is your title? All

(08:56):
right? So my title is likea regional sales manager, right, it's
actually Director of Product Innovation for GSMOutdoors. We are an umbrella of seventy
nine brands. So we have Muddy, we have Hawk, we have Stealth,
Can, we have Walkers, wehave Birchwook, Casey, so and
so forth. So I came overin the archery world and from new archery

(09:20):
products. You know, I've beenin the hunting industry for a long time
now, and so my title wereally don't know. But the fun thing
is is I probably do more withCold Steel now Wally, than anything else.
Cold Steel brand of knives, whichyou're always shooting videos and promoting the
new products. How is that productgoing? That line is great. It

(09:43):
is a neat introduction to a genreI've never even participated in whatsoever. And
that is like real true swords andknives. I mean I cut hogs in
half. We cut cars in halfwith different battle axes. We throw spears
into things. You know, it'scrazy, it's chaotic, and it's kind
of it's kind of a fun thingfor a fifty eight year old guy that's

(10:05):
been in this industry for thirty yearsto all set step over there and start
doing that. Well, I knowyou've been a crazy turkey hunter and shot
an amazing amount of turkeys, andyou helped design broadheads also right to be
more efficient and the kill of aturkey with the bull Yeah. Yes,
I helped with the bullhead for Magnus, did a few for new archery products.

(10:28):
But Brooks Johnson I got our startin nineteen ninety three with the development
the first hub style pop up blind, so that was double archery. So
I sold the premost in two thousandand seven, and here we sit in
twenty twenty three and I am stillin the industry. Well, I know
you love it, you love beingoutdoors, and you're a great archer.

(10:50):
Archery Season Wisconsin opens up Saturday,September sixteenth, runs all the way through
Wednesday, January thirty one. Twentytwenty four. So what are some of
the things that we should be doingor purchasing right now to have a successful
archery season. Well, the bigthings safety wise, First, check your
stands. Okay, get out there, check your stands. Make sure that

(11:11):
the ratchet straps, the chains, anything that's attaching it to the tree,
the platforms, everything is really safe. That's number one thing. Okay,
we can't have any anybody getting hurt. The other thing is is get yourself
a new harness system. You know, Muddy or Hawker all these places.
Design these where at least you havea safe line and a harness when you're

(11:31):
up there in the tree, stancyspace stas. As far as new things
go, the new cell camera technologyhas gone through the roof. The data
plans are actually very inexpensive now.The cameras are not expensive like they used
to be, and it is agreat way to put some cameras out there
for five, ten fifteen dollars amonth and have unlimited pictures and video with

(11:54):
audio pour into your cell phone ofwhat's going on out there, so you
can really do a lot of scoutingwithout intruding on that area out there.
That is getting really popular and anotheritem that we talked about the other day
at the store is are there anynew knives with exchange blades that a person
should consider having. Yeah, actually, we are coming out with or we

(12:18):
already have it. It's the MuddySwap and it's from the Muddy line of
hunting Blinds and hunting products. Itis a super ultra light weight knife that
has a very simple to change replaceableblade. Now it's not like some of
them out there that are brittle thinand they'll break when you're doing delicate work
or maybe you're giving it you're alland it snaps off. These are solid

(12:41):
blades. These are cold steel typeblades all right. You know they come
from a place that makes them witha little girth behind them. But they're
simple to change out. So ifyou want to, you know, you
know your hardest, your deer, you scut him out. Now you're going
to keep in whatever you can, drop a new blade in and keep rocking
and rolling. It weighs like twoor three ounces. It's called the Muddy

(13:01):
Swap and it's one of my favorites. Well, it seems a lot of
folks are going to those keith insteadof bringing all their heavy sharpening gear out
to resharpen a knife out in thefield, and when it's dark, that's
not easy. Now you just swapa new blade and you can get back
after it. Well, it is, and most of them don't know how
truly too sharpen a knife. Andthat's the thing. I mean, they'll

(13:24):
run it through that little drag, true thing, but most of the time
they're pulling too hard. You know, it's a delicate touch to sharpen a
product, to get it back towhere you bought it. But you know,
if you don't have that tellent, you don't want to waste that time
and you don't want to carry thoseextra products with you. Having five extra
replacement blades in a little pouse withyou and just going from bang to bang

(13:46):
to bang into new blade a greatway. Well, Keith, is there
a website someone can go to forGSM products. Yeah, you go to
GFM outdoors dot com and you'll hityour explore brand at the icon button on
there. It does explore brand andyou'll see our plotter of brands. Fantastic

(15:58):
had over seck in with Cedar ValleyHunt Preserve and Spring Green, Wisconsin for
all your pheasant hunting needs. Ibelieve you're gonna have to be a member
this year to hunt over there,So give them a call at Cedar Valley.
Hey, join me today. Youknow what one of the best times
of years and I love it.Opening of early duck season. Brian's teacher

(16:18):
is going to join me. Brianis one of our radio sponsors. Check
out his dog training. Head overto our website click on Brian. He'll
take care of all your dog trainingneeds. Hey Brian, good to have
you on board today. Thanks forhaving me. Hey Brian, you know,
driving up and down the roads theMississippi the Wisconsin River backwaters. There's

(16:40):
no water in these backwaters. SoI was curious to get your take on
what what are these hunters going toexpect. I mean, the early teal
season and then the later major opener. It's going to be a different season
this year, well for sure,I tell you what I mean, just
just from a safety standpoint, youa bunch of money banks that you're gonna

(17:00):
rup your run and your dogs inand out of, and you don't know
what's in those underneath that mud,So you want to be careful that way.
And uh, you sure don't wantto rip a knee out or something.
But you're just not going to beable to pull your your camouflage boat
against the bank and uh and camouflageit in in a lot of places like
you used to. So you're gonnahave to be a little flexible. I

(17:21):
mean some places, you know thatthat water is sixty yards from the bank
now where you used to be ableto pull your boat right into the cattails.
Yeah, I don't, Brian,I don't ever remember places on the
Mississippi backwaters. I mean it's solidgreen. I mean it's there's there's no
places to hunt. So what's yourthoughts on I think preseason scouting is going

(17:41):
to be huge this year. Imean you're gonna have to look at other
areas well. A couple of thingsis, you know, the lack of
water is going to concentrate some duftsa little bit, which could be a
benefit. But also, you know, maybe even get into some of them
spots where you used to be apretty good sized slow is going to be
a you know, where you usedto be able to get right in there
with a boat or canoe. Imean, the access is not there,

(18:03):
so you're gonna have to do littlefootwork. But camouflaging yourself, I mean
you might have to get pretty creativeand use you know, some of the
small one man blinds or a layoutblind or one of those small portable flip
over blinds just to hide yourself andyour dog, because I mean you're gonna
have to get up close to wherethem ducks are flying over, and those
places could be pretty limited. Yeah, any other thing you mentioned earlier,

(18:26):
Brian, going into these places,I mean you could virtually be stuck in
that backwater muck and the other thing, like you said, you could tear
a dog's leg up he gets stucktrying to get out or trying to do
a fetch. So my thoughts are, just play it safe with your dog.
Hey, what are you seeing forduck numbers around the area, Brian.

(18:48):
I'm seeing plenty of ducks where I'vebeen with and it looks like really
a lot of geese right now,and a lot of wood ducks. I'm
seeing plenty of heal I'm seeing aboutthe same number of big ducks that I
normally see. You know, Ithink as the migration progresses, I think
our duck numbers should be pretty decent. So I think it'll be a pretty

(19:14):
good year, provided you can getwhere the ducks want to be. Yeah,
kind of seeing that too. Plusseems like the geese, the geese
population seems to be real well. You know, one thing that all is
concerns me and talking to veterinarians,Brian, is the blue green algae,
and we see a lot of it, and for people that don't know,
it's very deadly to dogs. Anythoughts on that or obviously it's hard to

(19:37):
be too careful when you're in thesemarshes with it everywhere, But any thoughts.
Yeah, so when you get lowwater and you get stagnant water,
you're going to get algae blooms. And I tell you you better be able
to identify it. And so it'spretty easy to get on the internet and
google toxic algae blooms. You know, blue green is not the only one

(20:00):
on them. You get red algae, blue green algae. There's different things
that are that are dangerous. AndI mean blastl mycosis is another thing.
It's it's it's huge when the watergets low and and uh, you know,
and so you better be able toidentify potential dangers. And then you
also would help if you knew that. If you are, you know you
or your dog is exposed what todo next? And I tell you,

(20:22):
twenty minutes, Google or something onthe internet sure can save you a lot
of heartache and money down the road. Absolutely, And maybe it's a deal
where if you can find some drainageditches where you don't have so much stuff
to get through. I want tomentually got about a minute left, Brian,
But we didn't talk about the doveand dove opener, which is good
for pass shooting. But I wantto talk to you. We got about

(20:45):
a minute. What you offer fordog training, whether it's just a house
dog or you know, field trialor a hunting dog. Brian, Well,
we do. We do three monthgun dog program, We do monthly
obedience and force fitch program. Sojust about whatever we need we can,
and we specialize towards flushing breed dogs, not so much pointers, but flushing

(21:07):
breed span mills, retrievers like that. We can. We can obedience train
or for spetch any any breed. And we start to slow down as hunting
season gets close. So we gota limited spots because I'm also a guiding
It's spend quite a bit of time, you know, guiding in the fall
and winter. Yep, okay, and Brian, I do have to say
I loved your Facebook picture of oneof your training dogs hugging you up on

(21:30):
the couch. So besides the trainer, you love dogs and that that's a
good thing. So you have asafe duck season. Brian, thanks for
chatting with us today. All right, good luck and stay safe out there.
You better stay with us. Folkdram Bar with Ultimate Outdoors Radio.

Hey, welcome back, folks, and thanks for listening. You know,
people do some incredibly stupid Things outdoorsand now it's time. Now it's time
for the Ultimate Dumas segments. Thissegment is brought to you by Grampa Ray
Outdoors. If you're considering putting foodplots on your property to improve it for

(24:12):
wildlife habitat, give John O'Brien acall at Gramparey Outdoors or go to his
website, Grampa Ray Outdoors, andyou will learn a ton captain. On
this week's UDA, we're heading toKansas where a fellow was basically charged as
a poacher for shooting a Colorado mooseand leaving it. The thing about it

(24:34):
is he left it and then hewent back to try and cut the head
off and take the loins, butobviously the head was too big for one
person. And the bad news forhim was there was a game camera in
the area, so they got picturesof him. So it's like smile for
the camera type deal, you know. Busted. Yeah, so I mean,

(24:59):
no no valid license, you know, felony destruction of wildlife is basically
what he's going to be charged with. But you know, Wally, I'm
almost wondering if he didn't mistake themoose for an elk, possibly be you
know, years ago my brother andI Irena Elk hunt in Colorado and we
actually bumped the moose and he headedsouth bound up a canyon and it wasn't

(25:22):
too long before there was a shot. And it was just our guest that
we wondered if the guy shot themoose mistaking it for an elk. It
was kind of a coincident, dentaldeal because you know, I guess if
you don't quite see the head andyou shoot it, it's like, oh,
what did I just do here?So anyway, that's the old deal
word looking around there's camp. What'sthat best seem to do is turn yourself

(25:47):
in? You know, yeah, well as you know, well, can't
go ahead? Did you see thisarticle Jerry Davis wrote about wardens at work.
Some guy in Washburn County, Wisconsinshot a deer, claims he didn't
know how to clean it, sohe dragged it from his driveway out in
the middle of the street on FirstStreet and Trego, Wisconsin, and walked

(26:11):
away from it, assuming that peoplewould think it got hit by a car
or a truck. But actually hehad shot the deer and he claimed it
was with a bow and he couldn'tfind it well, he had never purchased
a bowl license, so he liedabout that and it was one thing after
another. But you know, peoplescattered deer carcases all over. They hied
him in the woods and stuff,But putting out in the main street like

(26:33):
that, I don't know what hewas thinking. The drag marks went right
to his driveway. Yeah, Iwould say he was definitely a UDA for
sure. So you know, Otherwise, as long as we're talking about deer,
and you know, we haven't talkedabout CWD for a while, but
hunters, especially the hunter's traveling west, you need to realize and check the

(26:56):
state laws because you know, alot of states the only thing you can
bring back across state lines is meat. So that's something you really need to
check. Probably the odds of youbeing caught are very slim, unless you
know, you happen to come acrossone of these check stations, which if
you've never experienced that, if youdon't stop, I can guarantee you that

(27:19):
just down the road, someone willprobably stop you, especially if you're in
a truck. So that is amandatory stop at any you know, check
station along the road, and that'sprobably where you might get whacked. For
bones and stuff in your truck forCWD. So just a little hot tip
today, Wally. That's a goodtip. Hey, it's timed up or

(27:41):
Spring Valley Kennel Field Report. Ifyou're going on vacation, you're traveling and
need a great place to board yourdog or dogs, contact shown or Linda
Timmins and Blue Moons at the SpringValley Kennel. Keptn't got any news or
stories, Uh yeah, plenty ofstuff, but most of it makes us
mad, Wally, because they're kindof everyone's going after the outdoors folks writes,

(28:03):
whether it's guns or seasons or whateverelse. But there was some some
news that we haven't really talked about. And actually there was the Mississippi speed
record for the Mississippi River in acanoe and this is a new Guinness World
Record fastest time to roll the lengthof the Mississippi from Itasca down to the

(28:26):
Gulf. It was a four mancrew. They covered two thousand, three
hundred and thirty four miles in atwenty three foot canoe and the foursome paddle
NonStop for sixteen days, twenty hours, sixteen minutes and they beat the old
record of seventeen days nineteen hours,so in forty six minutes. So that

(28:51):
sounds like a real burn to me. But new record set for that's a
long way to paddle for sure.So hats off the twenty three good canoe.
That's that's a pretty big item. That's pretty cool. Yeah, yep,
And they had her. They hadher loaded down pretty good with everything
they needed. Plus they had asupport crew also. But otherwise, Waterfowl

(29:17):

for the kids to do. Youcan actually bring your dog as long as
he is leashed. I would goto their website for all the info.

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
