You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radioon a quest to bring the outdoors to
you once again. Our resident guidesto the outdoors the Captain and the Wall
Dog. Hey, good Saturday morning. This is Wally the Wall Dog Vampy

(00:33):
along with Captain Terry Fry. Goodmorning, Captain More, Wally More and
everyone in the outdoor world. Hopeyou are enjoying these perfect fall days.
But if it could only last threeto six months, it would be nice,
but maybe a little bit warm forthe deer hunters. But a few
of them are are shooting some trophybucks, so that's that's a good thing.

(00:58):
But then a lot of them are, i know, holding off to
list weather cools. So waterfall seasoncoming up. So actually we're gonna talk
waterfall hunting and fishing with TANNERD.Cherney. We're gonna travel out to Devil's
Lake, North Dakota. And ifyou didn't hear, there was a recent
tournament out there record pounding for walleyecaught thirty nine pounds for five fish on

(01:22):
Devil's Lake. So they exposed aheck of a trophy fishery there. So
we're gonna check in with him becauseI know a lot of people fish that
area. And then we're gonna checkin with Andrea Joe. Andrea is a
sponsor of Ultimate Outdoors Radio in Centurytwenty one Realty for all your rural land
needs. She will fix you rightup. But she's a heck of an
outdoors gale. So we're gonna talkin ducks and bears. And they actually

(01:48):
heard her husband harvest wild rice,so that's pretty cool in a canoe and
they beat it off, and soshe'll explain all that. But otherwise,
every week we get to talk aboutgear. No, it's time for the
Ultimate gear Heads. This week's gearheadsegment is followed by Littleton four Lyttleton,
Wisconsin. Hey, before you startspending all your money on outdoor gear,

(02:10):
have the Ultimate Gearheads check it out. They will set you straight. Hey,
folks who don't see that Middleton FordStucker, You paid too much,
Wally Hey Captain. This week's reallya cool piece of gear is a reel.
It's the Acuma Citrix CI three sixfour, a bait casting rail.

(02:30):
It is affordable and is a perfectchoice for chasing big pike and muskies.
It has stainless steel internals with eightstainless steel ball bearings, including one bearing
that is anti reverse for rock solidhook sets. The Citric CI three sixty
four has the Zirconium line guide insertwhich works great with fifty pound, sixty
five pound or eighty pound test braidedlines. Captain, it's a great bait

(02:53):
casting rail at an affordable price.Good deal. Well in the news this
week, I see Middleton Ford andVortex Optics have announced a big Buck contest
for all you hunters. If youdidn't know, Middleton Ford is now a
Vortex stealer, Vortex Optics stealer. So actually in the next week or so,

(03:15):
I'm gonna check in with Chuck andfind out all the details on the
big Buck contest. But if youwant to do it early, I would
just search Middleton Ford or Vortex Opticsto get all the details on what you
can win. Wally, what areyou seeing out in the world these days,
Well, you'd mentioned bow hunting earlier. A couple of really big bucks

(03:37):
have been shot already, Captain, and the guys that did their homework scouting
trail cams. Sometimes these big bucks, they haven't had any pressure yet,
we'll sneak into their pinch areas andsomeone shot a giant down by Mount Horror,
an eight pointer that scored one hundredand seventy inches, Captain Wally that
was across from my house. Thatwas across from my house. Wally,

(04:00):
what a deer. So the fellowhad been chasing it over three years and
finally scored. You know, sosometimes I think go ahead. Yes,
sometimes you're really if you put yourtime in and work your plan and work
your wind. John Cleansing, who'san awesome bow hunter, he's been seeing
some big bucks, but this certainone he wants to kill the champ.

(04:23):
You got to have the right windotherwise that deer will smell you and not
come past your stand. Yeah.I actually possibly saw that buck that you
were talking about, because I hadseveral that's been up here that you know.
They you see him and then youdon't see him, and then they
cross the road after seasons. It'sjust that. Yeah, they're just they're

(04:46):
just smart. And actually more guysare starting to hunt early versus waiting till
those deer start moving in the rutbecause they can they can pattern them.
Plus they can sit in their reclinerwith these cameras these days and get notified
exactly when the bucks coming to theirfood plot or whatever, which that is
good and bad. I have mixedfeelings on that because I know a lot

(05:11):
of hunters are if they're nocturnal, then they don't hunt them. They wait
till and it's like, you know, you just need to go out there
and hunt them. I can seewhy some states band cameras so pretty controversial.
Anyway, Wally, so you'd mentionedfood plots, Captain. With this
rain we've had recently, it's reallyhelped some of the food plots that we're
kind of living on the edge andmaybe not growing very well, but we

(05:33):
had some significant rain and it's justin time. When you see I would
say, yep, it'll knock someof the leaves and some will pre nuts
down and so on, and getinto that. Here. We'll stay with
us, folks. We're gonna checkin, check in with Tanner, Journey
Devil's like tourism, talk waterfall andtalk trophy, Walleye fishing in the Ball

(05:58):
and Henria Joe is coming up.So stay tune. Hi. I'm Sewan

Joining us next is a great outdoorswoman. She hunts, fishes, rides
horses, guides for pheasant, raises, bees, makes wildflower honey, gathers
wild rice, duck hunts, grousehunts, and I don't know if I
mentioned, but she's even a bearhunter. Andrea Joe, Welcome to the
show. Hey, good morning now, Andrew, you recently were bear hunting

(08:54):
in northern Wisconsin with your husband John. How did that go? Hi?
One good? John actually had thetag, so I was just hanging out
with him doing a little bit ofwatching and filming. I went out a
couple of days with him and itwas kind of fun. We got the
chiefs and bears kind of rolled through, hit the baits and wander around.

(09:15):
And the day he actually got abear, I wasn't out with him,
but he still got this pretty coolvideo of it. So he ended up
getting two hundred and fifty ish poundbear. So nice. And where was
that about? Yeah, we werehunting up in the Mercer area. Mercer,

(09:37):
and is there a lot of bears? There's a lot of bears up
there? But the acorn drop thisyear is the biggest that they've ever seen.
So I guess a lot of peopleweren't seeing bears because they weren't coming
to baits. We were fortunate wesaw several bears. I guess a lot
of people were as they saw abear, they weren't passing on. I'm

(09:58):
waiting for a bigger one. Ithink John passed on three or four of
them before before he harvested one.Well, very cool. Now you have
a great young yellow lab named Timber. Have you had him out duck hunting
yet? Yeah? Actually we tookhim up north with us and we took
him out there for the opening duckhunting up there. We just found kind

(10:22):
of some puddles out in the Timberand took him out and got some board
ducks with him. Been awesome foronly being a year old, and he's
a yellow lab. But you've spentsome time training him, he's doing really
good. Yeah, he's a yellowLab. We spent a lot of time
training him when we had him asa puppy. We got him on birds

(10:45):
right away and kind of started obedience, and then as he got older,
we actually sent him off with DennyMoss is our trainer and Denny has had
him for three months doing a lotof other stuff with him. So we
just got him back and we've beendoing the duck hunting stuff with him.
We took him out dove hunting, and while we had some some mornings free

(11:09):
up north, we went out andeven tasting grouse around with him. So
he's doing awesome. That is great. Nothing like a good bird dog.
Now I saw a video on Facebook. You've been gathering wild rice in a
canoe. How was your harvest thisyear? We had a fun time this
year. We didn't have as muchtime to go out and harvest, but

(11:33):
we're getting better at it. Thisis our third year doing it. So
we spent about six hours out thereand we harvested. We figure we must
have had about one hundred and aboutone hundred pounds of rice or so wet
rice, and then by the timewe dry it down, clean it out
and then take it to get processed, we actually ended up with thirty I

(11:58):
think it was thirty four pounds ofprocess ready to eat wild rice. Well,
you gave me a big last yearto try, and my wife Kate
made pheasant soup with wild rice init and it was fantastic. This is
really great. Yeah. Once youhave a taste of that true wild rice,

(12:20):
it's hard to go buy stuff atthe store. We didn't really have
much time to go do it thisyear, and we thought about skipping it,
but I was I was too nicelast year and I gave away.
I think we had sixty something poundslast year, and between what we ate
and when I gave away, wedidn't have any least. So we figured
we better go at least triple oneday and stack back up nice. Now,

(12:43):
will you be guiding for pheasants?Oh? With your dog? Yeah?
I want to get out as muchas I can, having this new
pop and get him out on peasants. I know that we're going to be
out there mid October for the guardingfor cancer. We're gonna John and I
actually are going to run the towershoots that day. So I'm excited to

(13:03):
get him on the tower shoot becausethat's a that's a good opportunity for a
young dog to just get a lotof bird retreats, so that usually kind
of really kicks off their their peasants, their peasant hunting. So and that
will be at the Cedar Valley HuntingPreserve in Spring Green, Wisconsin. That's
always a great event. Yeah,it really is. I've been doing that,

(13:24):
I think since I started. It'sit's awesome and it's so it's for
such a great cause. If someonewants to buy a home or some land
in the country, how can peoplereach you and reach you? Yes,
they can give me a call sixeight five seven four two zero nine two.

Hey folks, Good time to getboth ATV winterized or if you need an
ATV head over to Qualms Marine Motorsportsstarting starton Wisconsin. Well, this week's
we're gonna travel out to Devil's Lake, North Dakota. Recent Giant Walleye tournament
was done there and record weights andTanner Cherney who Tanner is outdoor media court

(15:41):
communicator for Devil's Lake Tourisms on boardwith us. Good morning Tanner, Good
morning guys. How are you. We're doing great well, Tanner. For
a lot of folks that didn't knowrecord weights coming out of this National Walleye
Trail tournament of largest weight thirty ninepounds one day, ninety pounds for three
days? Did this surprise you,Tanner? You you fish Devil's Lake all

(16:03):
your life. Was this a surpriseto you or did you know that little
secret was there? You know,it was very much a surprise for me.
I was talking to some guys beforethe tournament took place, and you
know, there was some wagers goingon and like, what do you think
a three day total will be?And my guestimate was that seventy six pounds
for three days, and that wasyou know, a generous twenty five pound
bag for each day, and thatblew it. They blew it out of

(16:26):
the water. It was definitely asurprise to see that. We knew there's
a lot of great fish in thesystem, but there was some banks that
came out of here and it wasawesome to see that it's still sustaining with
those trophy size fish. Yeah,I believe the largest was just short of
twelve pounds eleven seven eleven eight, something like that, And that's you know,
that's pretty exciting for you know, you guys are already a great travel

(16:48):
destination anyway, But did you hearmuch about presentations. Were these fish deep
tanner or what were they up toit for summer time? You know,
there was quite a few guys thatwe're fishing deep and having great success.
But I want to say, likethe top three teams were fishing, they
kind a few fish out deep. But I was very surprised to see that
there's a lot of fish and eightfeet of water or less still on the

(17:10):
weed lines and whatnot that they werechasing down. So there were some areas
that maybe hadn't seen a lot ofpressure this summer and are a little bit
tougher to get to. But yeah, I was very surprised to see that
quite a few people were fishing prettyshallow for you know, end of August,
beginning of September kind of bite well, and that's where for the average
person coming out there, you reallyneed to know how to fish a slip

(17:30):
bobber because as you well know, you can fish those at any depth.
All you have to do is watchyour bober go down. You can put
any bait on them, and weedline fishing is the best place for a
slip bober presentation. It is,you know, And that's the beauty of
Devil's Lake is it's like almost tenlakes and one for the size of it,
And there's so many different presentations, but slipbobbers are so effective. Whether

(17:52):
you're sitting outside the flooded timber, you're sitting on a submerge rock pile and
thirty feet of water, you're sittingon an old roadbed, or you're sitting
like you said, right outside theweed edges too. So it's a very
versatile way to fish it. Yeah. Yeah, there's enough room there where
you can go forever to get awayfrom people. Well, we we're about

(18:14):
halfway through, so let's Tanner wantedto have you on board to talk waterfall
because one of the best waterfall destinationsin the US. I've had a chance
to experience that. So, Tanner, what's your waterfowl outlook looking like?
I know you normally you have aresident duck population. Its pretty good we
do, and the outlook looks actuallyreally good for this fall. You know,

(18:37):
last year we had a great fallwith the amount of water that came
into the area, with the amountof snow we had, and all of
our potholes and slus filled up,and you know, we didn't have as
much water this year, but wedidn't really have the drought scenarios like we
had in years past. So habitatwise, there's a lot of water out
there, a lot of grainfields thathave come down, a lot of cornfields
yet to come off, so youknow, when it's talking decoy setups and

(18:57):
whatnot, there's going to be anyof feed for the ducks out here.
But yeah, we do have areally good, healthy population of resident ducks
that usually stick around through you know, the middle to Kail end of October
before the big push of north birdscomes in. Yeah. I was going
to kind of ask you ballpark migrationtime. But you know, the neat
thing about your area, Tanner,And we had a chance to hunt grain

(19:19):
fields and you know, I've neverexperienced ducks decoying at high noon and sun
in the middle of the day. That's kind of what impressed me. You
didn't you didn't go home at nineo'clock. You stayed there all day,
which was pretty cool. You doit. It's so unique because we're so
close to you know, the Canadianborder that you do get a lot of
those birds that are coming in andmay have not have seen a lot of

(19:41):
decoy on pressure throughout the beginning ofthe season. So they're very green birds,
if you want to say it thatway. And I mean you could
be sitting there at noon and stillhave a few ducks short of your limit
and they're just rolling in from themigration and sure they're hungry, and yeah,
they just pop right in. So'sit's great. Yeah, So Tanner,
for the guy thinking about looking fora waterfall spot, how about some

(20:03):
advice on what kind of tools aguy might use. Obviously you need you
know, landowner, but Onyx mapOnyx would be a good tool to have
the little unit with Onyx maps onit because I think a landowner names and
everything around those anything else. Yeah, you know, the Onyx tool is
great because our North to Qota Gameof Fish also has a program with it
call plots where it's private land opento sportsman and there's hundreds of thousands of

(20:27):
acres throughout the state that are putinto this and it's easy open for anyone
to use. And I believe,I know they have their own app that
has this, but I believe itis also a layer on Onyx now where
you can see those plots lands onyour Onyx yip as well. Great,
Hey, gotta let you get Butyou're gonna be at Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo

we will be there from December. All right, Tanner, thanks much,

Captain, Hey, this week's UDA, I had a really of UDA out
of South Dakota. But I happenedto be watching the news this morning and
there was a high speed chase outin La a guy with a golf course

(24:10):
a golf cart. So the copswere basically chasing this guy in a golf
cart and he had a dog onhis lap and a high speed chase.
They were throwing out the strips toblow his tires, and I thought,
I don't even know who the guyis, but we got to mention him,
give him credit for Oh yeah.It was wondering Captain what it looked

(24:41):
like an Irish setter in his lap. It was a big dog and he's
on his high speed chase with hisdog in his lap. It didn't show
how it ended, if he crashedor what, but I thought I got
to mention that in the UDA.It's the best laugh for a long time.
So Captain Hope did those golf cartsschool? I have no idea,

(25:03):
Wally. I'm sure it was abattery operated one, you know, so
probably not maybe fift too fast, but yeah, I don't know. But
they had to throw out the stripsto try and blow his tires, so
he must. I suppose with thatgolf cart he could be taken some short
cuts across sidewalks and stuff, soit probably took him a little while.
It was pretty funny. It wasworth worth a uda mentioned, that's for

(25:25):
sure. He either stole somebody's clubsor he didn't pay his fee for his
golfing so he took off. Ithink he stole something. They didn't say
what why they were chasing him.But time for our Dakota Sunset Resort,
Devil's Lake, North Dakota for allyour lodging needs for fishing waterfall, it
is the place to go. Goto our website contact Sean and Linda Wally.

(25:48):
What else you got? Well, fishing has been pretty good in the
area. It's been pretty warm andnice out, which is kind of unusual
for fall, usually a little colder. But there's been some Walley's being caught
in Madison area lakes. Also somemuskies biting the top waters and bucktails have
been real good. Water temps arestill around sixty five degrees, so they

(26:12):
really good. Fishing hasn't quite comeup yet. Let's see what else.
Some of the lakes have been slow. For instance, Lake Wisconsin, very
little current up there with you know, not much rain, and the bite's
been a little slow there and it'stoo warm. You know. We need
that cold water period coming up.Yeah, Hey, around the area.

(26:33):
As long as I'm going to talka little bit about guns, there is
a gun show in Richland Center andVoca. If you're interested, you can
head over there by cell trade browssix eight five four eight forty eight sixty
seven's the number. Richland Center isOctober sixth and seventh gun show and then
Voca the thirteenth and the fourteenth, six eight five eight four eight sixty seven

(26:57):
and Wally. The reason I bringthat up is it might come to be
where there will no longer be gunshows with what's going on in this industry
and some of the stuff coming acrossthe wire, you know, and people
don't. I was talking to Bobbyloomiside of the state of Washington, who's
with Max Slurs, and we weretalking about guns, and he says,

(27:18):
you know what, Terry, Hesays, I can no longer and I
didn't even know this. He saysit got passed. I can no longer
have ammunition ship to my place inthe state of Washington. And he says,
this stuff was going through and nobodyknows about it. Lawmakers in Colorado
and at least six other states areconsidered changing bills to roll back legal protections

(27:40):
for gun manufacturers and dealers. So, in other words, they want to
be able to sue these gun manufacturersif something happens, which is going to
be a nightmare. State of Minnesotawill join eighteen other states that have laws
requiring expanded background checks, which Idon't have a problem with, but also

(28:03):
tacked onto that is so here's astatement that says the chiefs and sheriffs will
make the determination about the danger toself and others for people with firearms.
So basically, you know, thisguy could walk up to your door and
say, well, you know,we're gonna have to lock you up.
I don't think you know you're you'rea safe Individually, you have you have

(28:26):
some guy out there making a terminationon your future, and it just it
goes on and on and you know, Wally, two weeks ago I talked
about Pritzer in Illinois. You know, he basically enacted the responsibility the Firearm
Industry Responsibility Act, which again cansue manufacturers. So a lot of not

(28:48):
so good news out there that's happening, and no one seems to realize it.
Captain. There's so many of theselittle laws slipping here and there.
One of them, they're proposed ifyou sell a gun to an individual and
make a profit, you must reportit to the government. Yep, I
mean, come on, give usa break here. Well, thanks for

(29:10):
spending another Saturday morning. But theUltimate Outdoors Radio Crew, it goes by
