Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
On a quest to bring the outdoors to.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
You once again.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors, the Captain and the
Wall Dog.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
Good Saturday morning, and thanks for joining us. This is
Wally the Wall Dog Bamfie along with Captain Terry Fray. Morning.

Speaker 5 (00:37):
Captain, hey Ah, good, good morning to everyone out there. Uh, Wally,
I guess all I can say is throw another log
on the fire. But good thing is it's it's making ice.
It makes more ice without snow on it than if
there is a lot of snow, so that's good for
ice fishermen. But yeah, winter finally arrive. But it's kind

(01:01):
of weird that, you know, lack of snow. So but
we are talking fishing once again with the Milwaukee Musky
Expo coming up. Mike Hanson, who's going to be at
the Milwaukee Muskkie Expo. He is a guide musky guide
up in Cable, Wisconsin, and he does very well on

(01:21):
giant muskies all year long. He'd be a guy that
I would recommend for sure. And then we're going to
head up check in with Joe Henry, old friend of
the show. Knowing both Wally and I have known Joel
for quite a few years. He is tourism director for
Lake of the Woods. Following his post, well, I see

(01:41):
they were getting some big fish. The last one I
saw was twenty five inches. So many resorts up there
to work with. As far as traveling up there for
a few days, not too bad of a drive ten
eleven hours. I've done that and get out in the
shacks and in the snow bears, so it's it's a
good deal. Otherwise, every week we get to talk about gear.

Speaker 6 (02:04):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Heads.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
This week's gearhead segment is followed by Middleton Ford, Middleton, Wisconsin.

Speaker 7 (02:13):
Hey, before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the ultimate gearheads check it out. They will set
you straight.

Speaker 5 (02:20):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker. Here
is my hot tip. Maybe do a battery check. See
what kind of shape your batteries are in before see
how old they are. You can do a draw down
on them, See what kind of shape they're in before
you get stranded or your wife gets stranded. This is

(02:41):
one thing you really need to look at right now. Wally.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Yeah, and this week's really cool piece of gears a
hook remover. It's the cold Snap outdoors toothpick hook remover
with retracting lanyard. This simple device allows for easy hook
removal on deeply hooked fish. It saves time and keeps
you from damaging your jigs and taking the paint off them.
It works great on any hook or jig. The toothpick

(03:06):
hook remover is made of abs plastic, It's easy to
hold onto and it's made in the USA. Captain. It's
a great little item to have, Wally.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
When you speak of those, you know what comes to
mind is that is, you know, when people fish for
a lifetime, generally they get they get a hook in
them somewhere hands. I've had to pull one out of
my finger before a tournament one morning, which was kind
of brutal. But now I do carry a pair of
snips that will cut any hook in both boats, so

(03:37):
if you do get one in there, you can just
snip the thing off and not be stuck out there
with in your hand and at least get to a
doctor something to get it out. But that's a good
little tip. Otherwise, Wally upcoming shows Milwaukee Musky Expo in
February thirty. I think thirteen fourteen fifteen, followed by the
Wisconsin Fishing Expow. So at least there's some things to

(03:59):
do right now coming up.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
I got a few other events, Captain. Here's three of them.
The twenty fifth Annual Marshall Lions Ice Fishery Festival be
held on January seventeenth and eighteenth in Marshall, Wisconsin. The
Stoughton Conservation Club will be hosting their sixty second annual
Ice Fishery January twenty fifth, from midnight to four pm
on Lake y Ganza. And also the fourth Annual Moon

(04:23):
Valley Fishery will be held from seven am to three
pm on Saturday February fifteenth on Lake Wisconsin at Moon Valley.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
All Right, a little sad news that I have not mentioned,
but actually three fellows from the state of Iowa drowned
December eighth on the Mississippi River, and Wally, this happens
every year. I heard there was another drowning through the
ice somewhere, and I forgot where it was. But basically,
and the sad thing is, there was two brothers from

(04:53):
one family and then another fella. But they got sucked
into the back current on that dam and basic he
got sucked into the current and drowned. And man, this
is happening every year, and you know, and there's still
boats out fishing. They probably are not, but I know
of last week there were still boats trying to put
the fishermen trying to put their boats in and out fishing.

(05:15):
And this kind of tempts.

Speaker 8 (05:16):
Boy.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
You got to be safe.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
You have always wearing your life jackets and you know,
doing everything safe as possible.

Speaker 8 (05:24):
You know.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
Yeah, well there again, Wally. We've said it many times.
If you want to give a gift to an outdoors person,
whether it's a hunter a fisherman, the float coats float pants.
And the nice thing about those two is they really
work if you're sitting in a you know, like a
deer shack where you don't have to worry about what
colors and stuff you got on. They are super duper warm.

(05:48):
So otherwise, Wally, you're going to talk with Mike Hansen.
He's going to be at the Milwaukee Musk Expall. Also,
I'm kind of curious to see his biggest fish of
last fall, because Mike is a great stick. So stay
with us wolves.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
Very welcome back, folks, and thanks for listening. This segment
is brought to you by Vortex Optics. For all your
optics needs, go to Vortexoptics dot com. Joining us next
is a fantastic angler. Mike has fished for multi species
all over the country, but he is best known for
his musky success and timely tactics. Mike started musky guiding

(08:11):
around Madisonary Lakes and rivers and soon moved to northern
Wisconsin north of Hayward. Michael Hanson, welcome to the show.

Speaker 8 (08:19):
Hey, thanks for having me. Guys appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
Michael, how is your guiding season for muskies this past year?

Speaker 11 (08:28):
You know, up in northern Wisconsin, it was pretty fantastic
pretty much throughout the whole year. September and October a
little difficult because we weren't having that normal cold front
scenarios that we are typically having during that time, but
we made up for it and did really really well
in November.

Speaker 8 (08:46):
But yeah, it was a good year.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
I know you are hardcore and fish late into the season.
How was the late fall and early winter musky season
for you?

Speaker 11 (08:57):
You know, it was a lot shorter than it was
last year, that's for sure. I know I put my
boat away last year and December thirty first, we fished
really really hard, but mother and nature kind of kind
of put.

Speaker 8 (09:10):
That to rest this year.

Speaker 11 (09:11):
I know, it got really cold down south and I
didn't feel like pulling the boat down south cast in
below freezing conditions.

Speaker 8 (09:20):
But it was good while it lasted.

Speaker 11 (09:22):
But it was a lot shorter of a season than
what I was used to it last year.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
I saw a lot of great photos of big muskies
you caught, and you do some work with Today's Angler,
also with Robbie and Lee. You guys caught some big
ones this past year.

Speaker 8 (09:37):
Yeah, Yeah, it was awesome.

Speaker 11 (09:39):
We typically do like a ten day deal where we
tried to get out ten days in a row as
late as we can in the season up here and
see how many muskies we can put in the boat.
And I think we were like six for ten. Yeah,
I believe it was six for ten, which is pretty
good late in the year.

Speaker 8 (09:56):
You know, those fight windows get really short.

Speaker 11 (09:58):
So any anytime you get bit that late in the year,
it's a good day.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
Those are generally some really fat fish at that time
of year. And did you have any new favorite baits
or tactics.

Speaker 8 (10:13):
You know, the baby beaver.

Speaker 11 (10:18):
Was an extremely good bait for me to toss late
late in the year. It just has an awesome pull
pause action. It's it's pretty much a giant castable fly.
So when that bait wasn't moving when you're pulling it,
it was still moving because of the hair is you know,
kind of breathed in the water, if you will, So

(10:38):
that that was a great, great bait for late late fall.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Are you still chunking those giant medusas, those big rubber
chewy things.

Speaker 8 (10:47):
Yeah, no, absolutely, we were. Didn't throw them a lot
late in the fall. I just you know, it was
kind of a thing to.

Speaker 11 (10:56):
Where they were almost working too fast and we're that
baby beaver. I could throw that thing weightless and have
it kind of hang a lot longer in the straight zone.
When it gets that cold in the year, I like
to have base it'll hang more so than drop really
really quick, just because those muskies are they're a little

(11:17):
bit slower every day that goes by late in the year,
so give them more of an opportunity to grab that bait.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
You know, earlier you talked about the fall. It was
so warm in October, he had seventy degree temperatures. So
that kind of changes the water temp and profile of
the lakes, doesn't it.

Speaker 11 (11:34):
Oh yeah, no, absolutely, it just put a giant you know,
or a big standstill. You know, nothing was telling those
fish that winter was necessarily coming. I mean they know
that it's coming, but when those water temperatures are that warm,
their metabolism, you know, believe it or not, it doesn't
change it. So they weren't necessarily told to feed. So

(11:58):
it was one of those deals where in oct pretty
much all of October, you just had to pound all
day long as hard as he could until those fish
decided to bite.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
Mike, you will be at the Milwaukee Muskie Expo. It's
February fourteen, fifteen and sixteen in West Bend, Wisconsin. That's
quite a show coming up, isn't it.

Speaker 11 (12:18):
Oh yeah, yeah, No, it's awesome. I mean between the
Chicago and the musk here and Milwaukee Expo. I love
those expos. I'll be up both of those. And yeah,
it's it's fantastic. He got dealers from all across Midwest,
especially anywhere from big bait makers, guys that make baits

(12:41):
out of the garage, and it's a fun it's a
fun way to break up the winner in between the seasons.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
How can folks reach you, Michael if they want to
book a trip and fish with you?

Speaker 8 (12:52):

Speaker 5 (14:54):
Hey, for all your Winner and Spring Building needs, contact
Clarybuilding Corp. Verona and all their national offices in the US.
Well join me today. We're heading up the Lake of
the Woods. Always have to talk to Joe Henry at
least once a winter. Joe is the director for Lake
of the Woods Tourism and good morning.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Joe, Hey Terry, Hey you doingbody.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
We're doing great. And Joe, I have to mention we
talked off air about your thirty one and a half
inch whileye that I got to share and got to
watch you reel in a couple of years ago and
highlight of the trip that was that was fantastic And
you mentioned you do have that mounted behind the desk,

(15:37):
But that was a day I always remember. So Joe,
I wanted to check in with you. How's the ice
conditions on the Lake of the Woods.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Ice ice is great. You know, we we had a
little bit of warm up, you know, like some of
the spell did here this last week. But you know,
just we had snow on our ice too. So luckily,
you know that that took care of some of that snow.
Milk and some of that snow. That's that snow could
be an insulator terry, but it also going to be
a protector when we get warm weather and stuff. And
it our ice is doing great. Now for the next

(16:06):
couple of weeks, we're going to be in single digits
and blow zero again with no real you know, big
weather fronts coming through a hand ink. And so it's good.
We were allowing and I always defer to the resorts
and the outfitters, but as a rule, most roads are
allowing you know, mid sized vehicles. We got big sleeperhouses out.
I mean, it's it's a game on on Lake of
the Woods. We've been fishing for weeks now.

Speaker 5 (16:27):
Yeah, that was actually my next question if you had
all the road marks for because you know, you obviously
get some do it Yourselfer's up there, and what's important
is to keep those guys safe. But otherwise for people
that don't want to do it yourself. There's, Joe, how
many lodges and outfitters do you work with? Right in
that immediate area.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
You know, in Lake of the Woods County, there's there's
over sixty lodges. And you know when I say lodging
facilities here, that's that's big resorts, small resorts, that's hotels,
and that's even some the airbnbs and vrbos and stuff
that you can just rent a single cabin. But there's
actually over sixty and that that would consist of, you know,
on the Rainy River, the south shore of Lake of

(17:10):
the Woods. And of course that little tip that sticks
up into Canada called the Northwest Angle.

Speaker 5 (17:15):
Well we should talk about that, Joe. So are can
people get shuttled up there? They do? They need to drive?
Or what's a scoop on that?

Speaker 2 (17:24):
Yeah, So the Northwest Angle is that little tip that
sticks up into Canada, and that's actually considered an exclave,
meaning you have to travel through another territory to reach
your own. In this case, you have to travel forty
miles through Canada on the west side of the lake.
It's actually Manitoba, but you travel forty miles through Manitoba
and then you re enter into the United States up
at the Northwest Aangle. So if you're going to drive up,

(17:46):
of course you need credentials, your passport or a passport card,
or you can use an enhanced driver's license. You can
even use, you know, an original birth certificate combined with
a federally issued idea like a driver's license. Now, if
you don't want to rive up, and if you don't
want to go through customs, you can stay on Lake
of the Woods and either snowmobile up. We have groom
steak trails all the way up forty two miles to

(18:07):
the angle, or we have a Lake of the Woods
passenger service, which for fee will bring you up to
your favorite Northwest angleo resort via bomba Deer, which is
a big track machine crack red with skis, and that'll
bring you up and then of course when you're ready
to come home a few days later, they'll bring you
back and you just park on the south end of
the lake and life is good. So a couple of

(18:29):
different ways to do it, but it's a neat area
up there.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
Yeah, join me. Dan Ultimate Outdoors radio Joe Henry Lake
of the Woods tourism. Joe got a couple of minutes.
How about presentations, what's happening, what depthy fishing and so on.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
Well, you know, in Minnesota you can use two lines
while AYE fishing. So traditionally what we'll do is we'll
do the one two punch Terry. We'll do a jig
in one line and we'll dead stick the second line.
So you usually usually a jig and spoon, you know,
with a piece of a mental head or a piece
of mental tail on there. Sometimes might use like a rappleer,
rip and rap and rip them. You don't get that
vibration and rattles going. And then on the second line

(19:06):
we're gonna be using you know, adent stick, which would
be like a live mino, either on a plane hook
or maybe on a jig, and we'll put that about
six inches to a foot off the bottom to get
the more the less active fish. You know, the water
and Lake of the Woods is stained water, kind of
that little coffee color. Very clean water, but it's stained.
The walles and cigers actually bite better during the day.

(19:27):
That also makes it so that your golds and your
glow colors and your rattle baits will actually perform.

Speaker 5 (19:35):
Yeah yeah, and get in some northerns to Joel.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Oh yeah, yeah, we got you know, we we have
a our limited pike on Lake of the Woods is
three fish, but more importantly thirty to forty inch slot.
You got to put them back. What that does it
creates a monster pike factory and we have a lot
of fish over forty inches. People that are angling form
using tip ups and such. You know, they're whacking the big,
big pike. And of course you know our Walla anglers

(20:00):
unsuspectedly look at you two.

Speaker 5 (20:01):
Absolutely hey, Before I let you go, the most important
question is the ice bar still open?

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Oh my gosh. We got two ice bars now, Terry.
We got the Igloe Bar out of Zipple Bear Resort,
and we have the Angry Walleye out of Cyrus. And
they're they're they're both going strong, you know, and they're
they're they're building up the ice for the Igloe Bar
that's going to be put out shortly, the Angry wall
that should be put out this week as well. And
you know what they do is they can flood the
ice to get get ice steps to make sure it's

(20:28):
sticking up.

Speaker 5 (20:30):
Yeah, Hey, Joe, how about infal and we'll let.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
You get you know what, Hey, I want to find
anything out about Lack of the Woods right in the house, resorts, whatever.
Check out our website that is Lick of the Woods
m N dot com.

Speaker 5 (20:43):
All right, Joe, good talking, You have a great new year.

Speaker 4 (20:48):

Speaker 5 (22:52):
Now it's time for the Ultimate Dumas segment.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
Second is brought to you by Grandpa Ray Outdoors. You

John O'Brien and Grandpa Array Outdoors.

Speaker 5 (23:10):
Captain well Wally. I heard on last week's UDA the
guy that hauled the Christmas tree backwards got thrown out
of the house.

Speaker 4 (23:21):
Kate heard that she's listening to the show. Sarah's just laughing.
I mean, duh.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
We're traveling to Iowa this week. Boy Iowa pops up
on the UDA segment That has over the last ten
years quite a bit. This is another bizarro one. A
twenty four year old Iowa man faces charges after shooting
a person who is walking on a rock bar near
the Des Moines River. Charged with harassment, assault while displaying

(23:48):
a dangerous weapon, use of a dangerous weapon. He shot Oh,
he shot at a person three times after saying that
the prayer is property. He also threatened to the person.
So yeah, but luckily the guy got out of there
without getting a bullet, so that's good news there.

Speaker 4 (24:11):
He's there's some some wackos out there.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:14):
It gotta be a little careful these days, Wally.

Speaker 4 (24:17):
Yeah. Hey, it's time now for Spring Valley Kennel Field Report.
If you are traveling or planning going away for a
weekend or a week or more on a trip and
need a great place to board your dog or dogs,
contact shown or Linda Timmins at the Spring Valley Kennel
in Blue Mounts, Wisconsin.

Speaker 5 (24:33):
You know, while I come across this story little news
around the world, and I thought about Clary Building Court
because remember they have ospreys over there when we do it, yes, fishing. Well,
here's a story about an osprey that was banded a
at a forest preserve in Chicago in twenty twenty three.
It was recently rescued twenty five hundred miles away in Columbia.

(24:57):
A local group found the osprey the height, raded, disoriented
and kind of brought it back, got its health back
until it was recovered. Interesting fact that the newly hatched
ospreys usually migrate to the Gulf of Mexico for the
winter where they live for a couple of years, so
they stay down there until they mature, Wally, and then

(25:19):
they find a mate and they fly back home. So
kind of a cool story these migrations. These birds, the
amount of area they covered and stuff pretty neat.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
That sprays are really a cool bird. They're my favorite.
I got a picture of them on the wall here.
They're hanging around the sock dam quite often, and they hover.
They got a jointed wing so they can hover above
the water and when they see a fish they dive
down and go four to five feet under to grab
a fish. It's just fun to watch them.

Speaker 5 (25:48):
Here's something. You got anything else there, Wally, Nope, No,
here's fun. Speaking of diving. Another bizarre story around the world.
While Wabishaw, Minnesota, it's now don't Eat the Beaver, as
the title of it, it's now illegal to eat a
nuisance beaver in the state of Minnesota. No one seems

(26:11):
to know why. Trappers who kill beaver during the season
can still eat the meat, which is described as tasty
and I've had beaver and I actually really like it
so especially barbecued. But homeowners property owners of Minnesota can
legally trap and kill beavers, but the new law language

(26:33):
makes it that it's illegal to eat nuisance beavers. They
can still be processed for their fur castor oil, or
by a taxidermist, and reporters report that they have no
clue who made this new law. They can't figure it out.
So something happened behind the scenes and beaver's got banned.

Speaker 4 (26:59):
What the heck neighbors A beaver trapper, Darren Brainnig. He's
been on our show before, and there can be some
real nuisance beavers. He's got several over sixty pounds. I
believe his biggest is seventy two pounds, but he does
eat them. Captain he makes stuff out of their fur
and then he does eat them. So I can't understand
why they would do a dumb law like that.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
It's kind of bizarre because you know, they do carry
I think it's a bacteria or something.

Speaker 9 (27:25):
But.

Speaker 5 (27:27):
Yeah, I don't know. Here's my last bizarre story for
this show. Lunenburg, Virginia. This is bad luck.

Speaker 8 (27:37):
Wally.

Speaker 5 (27:38):
A man died in Virginia after a bear in a
tree shot by one of his hunting partners fell on
him and killed him. That's bad luck. That's just really
bad luck. So, yeah, the guy was fifty eight years old,
he was an outdoorsman, you know, so on and so forth.

(27:58):
But I don't know if he forgot the look up
because the partner shot the bear. And you know, I
suppose you think about a wally. You know, some of
these bear can go five hundred pounds, or even if
it's two hundred pounds falling out of a tree, that'd
be yeah, I could give you a little headache. So
any story.

Speaker 4 (28:15):
There doing I can say is at least he died
doing something he'd like to do, you know what I mean.
It's just there's there's weird ways to go and that's
one of the strangest ones I've ever heard. But hopefully
he enjoyed his time outdoors.

Speaker 5 (28:31):
Prior to my last hot tip for something to do,
head over to Vortex Vortex Edge check out their facilities.
Their upcoming class is a good way to spend some
winter time in their range. Well, thanks for spending another
Saturday morning with the ultimate outdoors radio Grew

Speaker 4 (28:46):
That's just worldwide on iHeartRadio.
