Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Want a quest to bring the outdoors to.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
You once again.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain and the
wall Dog.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Hey good Saturday morning.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
This is Wally the wall Doog Vamfia along with Captain
Terry Friday morning, Captain Hey.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
Goomar Waldog more and everyone in the outdoor world. Well,
it's cold out there. Throw another log on the fire.
It comes and goals a couple of days here and there.
But I guess what we call it is it's cold
enough to make ice, and I guess that's a good
thing for all the ice fishermen. Kind of strange, we
don't have fifteen inches of snow on the ground, but
(01:00):
it comes and goes and that's okay. It gives you
a couple of days to get outside when it's thirty
five forty and then she chills out again. So so otherwise,
we are talking muskies. The Milwaukee Musky Expo is coming up.
We're going to talk trophy muskie fishing with guy Doug Wagner.
Doug runs out of Green Bay Fishers, Minnesota and Canada.
(01:21):
And then we're going to talk with Jake Smith from
Smitty Baits. Smitty Baits is kind of a old legend
of a business up in the north Woods, still makes
their own Baits family, family oriented and they are going
to be at the Milwaukee Musky Expo too, and so
it'll be a good couple of interviews to chat with them. Otherwise,
(01:42):
every week we get to talk about gear.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Heads. This week's
gearhead segment, it's Fallowed five Middleton four, Middleton, wiscons Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate Gearheads check it out.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
They will set you.
Speaker 6 (02:00):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker you
paid too much? Maybe good time to get that battery
checked with these cold tempts in there at Middleton Ford Wally.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Yeah, and this week's really a cool piece of gears.
A fishing lure. It's the jigging Rap made by Rapalla.
The Jiggenrap was originally designed as a winter lure, but
it has proven itself to be a year round vertical
jigging lure. When work correctly, the Jiggenrap swims in a
tantalizing circle. Slowly raise your rod tip eighteen inches, drop
your rod tip to resting position, and then snap, jigg
(02:36):
it and hang on. Jigginpolos are available in a plethora
of colors and sizes, from two centimeters, which is a
one to eighth ounce, all the way up to nine centimeters,
which is a seven eighth of an ounce model. Jiggen
wraps work great and they trigger big fish to bite.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
Captain Hey, Wally, Uh, well, you know, Wally, I was
gonna mention this last week, but there's some fishing stuff
going on. But I'm sure you heard rumors after our
deer season. You know, there's some people thinking that maybe
the state of Wisconsin should change the timeframe of their
deer season, being as hitting in Thanksgiving all the time,
(03:16):
and people are traveling from up north to go back
for Thanksgiving and then going back up again, YadA, YadA, YadA,
the school breaks and everything else, and you know, it's
to the point where with this early rut, really things
are slowing down by the time we have our gun season.
And I'm just wondering, you know, Michigan, and Michigan has
(03:40):
an earlier gun season, and I'm just wondering, if it's
not even a bad idea, what's your thoughts on bumping
that back a week or something.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Wally certainly wouldn't hurt anything.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
I mean, it'd be nice to keep plenty of hunters
in the woods and keep the deer moving. I'm surprised
at how many people never even saw it deer like
the opening weekend, So maybe moving the season up when
the deer on their feet more might be a good idea.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
Well, I've noticed, and you know, I hunt about three
counties a year, from Dane County all the way to
the Mississippi and Vernon County, and I've noticed it's come
to the conclusion I think these bucks are just exhausted.
I think the dose are too, just because of the
amount of traffic. These bucks are just chasing them everywhere.
It seems like the only way to hunt those in
(04:26):
some of these areas is you have to hunt them
in a feeding area at night because they've laid up
all day. I see more and more of these deer
just getting shot from guys standing, you know, in a
food plot at night because there's no deer movement.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
So I'd say that was very true. This year.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
A lot of deer was shot in the last forty
five minutes of the hunt each day as they were.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Coming out to a food source.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Hey Camp, we got a couple events coming up if
I can mention quick that twenty fifth Annual Marshall Lions
Ice Fishery Festival would be held today in Marshall, Wisconsin.
The Stoughton Conservation Club will be hosting their sixty second
annual ice Fishery January twenty fifth, from midnight to four
on Lake Keeganza midnight to four pm, that is. And
(05:11):
the fourth Annual Moon Valley Fishery will be held from
seven am to three pm on Saturday, February fifteenth on
Lake Wisconsin at Moon Valley.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
Otherwise, quickly, Arizona license apps opening probably this week. They
are way behind schedule as far as getting that opened
up if you're applying for elk and deer. Otherwise, Wally,
pretty good fish bite all the way around Mississippi River,
Madison Chain, even the perch a little perch bite. Good
perch bite starting to come back to Green Bay, which
(05:42):
is promising.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yeah, and the ice has been really good.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
As you mentioned earlier, we had a lot of cold
temperatures and in our area.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Like right now, we got eight to ten.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Inches of solid ice with no snow, so it's going
to continue to make ice.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
It's pretty good this year.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Yeah, just be safe. There's still some open spots here
and there, but otherwise. Doug Wagner's coming up talking Trophy
Musky Green Bay, Minnesota, Canada. Following him Jake Smith from
s Many Baits. Stay with us, folks.

(08:22):
specialized in trophy muskie, walleye and bass. He loves catching
big fish on the waters of Green Bay, Minnesota and Canada.
Doug Wagner, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 6 (08:33):
What a Wally?
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Doug tell us?
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Where are you from and how long have you been
a fishing guide?
Speaker 6 (08:39):
Oh? I've originally grew up in southeastern Wisconsin, moved to
Green Bay in twenty eighteen and have been I think
six full seasons all going into seven.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
And how's your season last week? I know you traveled
a lot, you fish hard. How is your season?
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (08:58):
Season was good. I can't complain. I love traveling, I
love bouncing around. It started in Green Bay and ended
up in Canada and took about three hundred pit stops
in between, and it was good. We had a good
season for Walley's cut somewhere, had two of the biggest fish,
the biggest longest Walls've ever had in my boat this
last year, and did really good on muskies, had a
bunch of really nice ones and it was It was
(09:20):
a great season overall. I can't complain at all.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Speaking of modulation, in Green Bay and surrounding area. There
is there a lot of fifty inch fish in the system.
Speaker 6 (09:31):
Yeah, Green Bay's it's definitely Wisconsin's best chance for a
fifty incher. You know, we're doing good. We've got a
lot of fish in the system. There are some really
big fish in the system right now that are more
into that mid fifty inch raine. But we do have
some some up and comers as well. Our stocking program
is still putting fish in. We're not where we were
(09:52):
ten years ago with our stocking numbers, but we're still
doing a lot better than most places in the world.
So we got no complaints. We got a great fishery,
that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
I was watching some of your videos the other day.
You got some awesome stuff on YouTube. Workers we're trolling
and caught two fifty inchers at the same time, ed
him in anette. That was incredible.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
Yeah, that's uh, that's happened. I think twice. We've had
that happen nowt and it's always interesting. The bigger one
always bite second once the boat slowed down. I don't
know why that is. Maybe I'm just going too fast,
but it uh. Yeah, we've got lucky a couple of
times with that, but it is a incredible fishery and
you know, muskies when they turn out and you generally
have a five to fifteen minute window to capitalize and
sometimes he capitalized place.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
What brand of electronics do you like to use on
your boat and how do you like what you're using nowadays?
Speaker 6 (10:45):
Oh? Great, So I'm a I'm a huge Hummingbird fan,
have been for a long time now. The side imaging
is hands down the most important part or feature in
my boat as far as technology, you know, just seeing fish,
seeing structure, read lines. Their mapping is really awesome. I
love their auto chart feature. I love their standard maps.
(11:05):
You can buy the map chip cards, the lake Master chips,
but wherever I go in the country, those things are
definitely the most important tool.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Run Hummingbirds.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Also, they are quite easy to use, aren't they user friendly?
Speaker 6 (11:19):
They are? Yeah, they really are. And they just came
out with a couple of new units right now and
able to get an early look at them. And the
new Explorer series has got a new interphase and it's
going to be even more simple to run. And now
they're going to all touchscreen too, so kind of get
rid of some of the button pushing and scrolling through stuff.
It's all gonna be touch screen right at your fingers.
(11:39):
There's not even an option for an old key pad
or you know, they's a keypad on the side, but
you have touchscreen now with all the new units as well.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Oh that makes sense. Then the resolution on them is
just getting incredible. You can see fish with their mouths
open times and fins and everything.
Speaker 6 (11:57):
Yeah, it's pretty wild. It is pretty pretty wild where
it's going, that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
You do a lot of filming, have some amazing videos.
How can people find and watch your videos?
Speaker 6 (12:10):
YouTube's probably the best place to start. YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram,
all of them. We upload videos there. I think last
year we uploaded one hundred and four clips or one
hundred and five clips, something like that. But we do
have a ton of backlog history of YouTube videos over
the last eight nine years. But just Doug Wagner Fishing
is the easiest way to find any of my social
(12:31):
media channels, and there's a ton of good stuff on there.
If you're looking for action pack content, Muskies, there's a
bunch of Walleye stuff on there, bass stuff and a
lot of lake trout stuff too. Actually, through the ice.
I was out Lake trout fishing yesterday. But yeah, there's
a lot of really cool stuff on there.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
Now, your wife, Jesse, she also is a guide, which
is pretty amazing. And between the two of you, you
guys put a lot of fish in the boat. How
long has Jesse been guiding people?
Speaker 6 (12:59):
So his parents on a resort. I believe they've had
it for twelve years now. But yeah, Jess's she's a
heck of an angler, that's that's for sure. Her home lake,
she's she knows it better than anybody I can. I
can probably say that, but she's a wizard, and she
she ticks my button most days. I hate to admit it,
(13:19):
but I guess that's what I good for putting her
in the front of the boat.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
That's like my wife Kate is a good angler and
out fishes me a lot.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
But I don't like to talk about it too much.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
All Right, have you got it?
Speaker 4 (13:35):
Have you got a phone number where people can reach
out to you? Or how should we call you to
get a guide trip?
Speaker 6 (13:40):
Yeah, you can give me a call. My number is
two six two seven nine five three three.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Fantastic.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Well Doug, thanks for joining us, and have another great
fishing season.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Awesome, thanks for having me and welcome folks. That was
Doug Wagner. Stay tuned, will be right back.

We're gonna talk with Jake Smith from Smitty Bates. Jake
is gonna be at the upcoming Milwaukee Musky ex bol
but we're gonna check in with him, see what's new
(15:55):
up in the north Woods and check and see how
his bite was. Good morning, Jake, Good morning, well Jake,
I was always good to talk to you. I love
interviewing people that have the small family businesses that produce
their own baits and come up with new baits for
our listeners. How long has Smitty Baits been in in business, Jake.
Speaker 12 (16:22):
It's been since nineteen seventy. My dad started the business
and he's still working with us every day and it's
fifty five years now that we've been we've been going
in business here, so it's been a it's been a
good run.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
Yeah, it's I always like to check out the small
family business baits because those are the guys that are
out on the water. You guys, uh, and you guys
do a full time guide business in conjunction, right Jake.
Speaker 12 (16:47):
Yeah. So we're guiding, you know, all the open water
season and making the baits in the wintertime, and you know,
we just try to make all of our inventory up
in the winter and you know, try to guess what
we're going to be needing for the year to keep
the stars supplied and you know, and then we'll also
be going to go onto the shows who coming down
to Milwaukee, and then we're gonna be also and well
(17:08):
so we're just doing two goes this year, so that
keeps us pretty busy, Jake.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
For our listeners, What waters are you guiding on up there?
Speaker 12 (17:18):
Mostly Oneida Violence County, a little bit of Price County,
and a little bit of Iron County, So I get
around a little bit as day in those four counties mostly.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Yeah, before we jump into the Milwaukee muskie X but
what's your how's the overview for how the muskie looking
in northern Wisconsin as far as quality numbers and so on.
What's your thoughts.
Speaker 12 (17:39):
From my own fishing In the last year, we had
a really good year, uh, you know, a high number
of muskies, but also really some really nice muskies. I
had four over forty eight inches and one with forty
nine and a half was the biggest for the year.
And a lot of times I'm not chasing big fish.
I'm taking you know, first, I'm fishermen out so you know,
(18:03):
during and fall I get to chase bigger fish. But
a lot of my my summer is just getting you know,
kids and families first time milfew fishermen their first muskie, So.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Yep, join me. Dane Eltmon Outdoors Radio, Jake Smith from
Smitty Baits and Jake, I gotta say one of my
favorite trips was fishing with your dad many years ago
because he had a couple of those muskies named and
I happened that's one of them. I always remember that. Hey,
let's jump into the Hawkey Musky Expo. You've been there
quite a few years. What kind of baits can people
(18:35):
expect to see in your booth? Anything unique? And what
what you guys been working on.
Speaker 12 (18:41):
Yeah, I've been coming down to the Milwaukee Muskie Experts.
You know, my turns had been my dad would bring
me down since I was probably four years old, and
I've been there since. But we're Yeah, we're gonna have
our whole line of smitty baits and you know we're
famous for our jerk baits. We're gonna have all that there,
and we're gonna have we have Tony Rizzle's baits now too.
We have the of Wiz, which we've rented as the
(19:03):
Wizard and the Wizard Spell, which is you know, really
good springtime baits. We're gonna also have all of our
hook sharpeners, sucker rags, leaders, you know, top water baits.
We have you know, pretty full booth there, so we
really have everything that you need in one spot.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
Yeah, Jake, with the amount of I call it bait pressure,
because there's not a lot of secrets in the fishing
world anywhere anymore. Do you see the musky preference changing
to maybe a different bait or a specific bait, or
is it still still just a good selection works for
(19:42):
most of them.
Speaker 12 (19:44):
I think when you have really high pressured fishing areas,
throwing baits like buck tails and things like that are
are not as good usually because that's what the majority
of people are throwing. So when you have high pressured lakes,
it's better to throw jerk bait. I do a better
with stopping gold baits, things that look more erratic, and
(20:05):
you know, people are throwing less of slow really slow
top waters can be good too. You know, everybody's buzzing
their top waters, you know, fast, and if you work
one slower that that seems to help. Then high pressured lakes.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Yeah, as far as you know specific seasons, do you
like to switch up baits? Well, you know, whether it's
you know, warm weather, fall weather, cooler water, Uh, do
you like to switch up to specific baits?
Speaker 12 (20:34):
Yeah, warmer water, you know, in spring it's and in summer,
you know, especially July and August, you want baits that
are typically running faster. It seems that they like the
speed at that time of the year, and you know,
early in the season and and fall they like, you know,
you got to slow it down and and work your
baits slower, and that's when the jerk bits are really
(20:56):
really good. In that slow water, you know, cold water.
You can slow it down a little bit with that,
give them a you know, give it a pause, give
them a chance they eat it.
Speaker 6 (21:05):
Yeah, Hey, Jake.
Speaker 5 (21:07):
For people that might not make the Milwaukee Musky xpoll,
how can they find your bait? What's the easiest way,
the best way?
Speaker 12 (21:13):
We don't sell on uh. We do have a website
at smittybaiit dot com. We are not selling on there,
just if you would go it to one of the retailers,
or you could shop online muskieshop dot com or Team
Reinold Doors dot com. They both have our products on there.
Speaker 5 (21:32):
I appreciated six minutes goes fast. We'll see you at
the Milwaukee Musky Xpo.

Speaker 3 (24:02):
Captain Hey.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
On this week's UDA, we're traveling to Utah in a
bizarre story. The Utah divisional Wildlife completed an investigation into
elk hunter's claims that a Millard County sheriff deputy stole
a bull out from under him during a hunt. Investigator
determined that the deputy, Mike Blad, to not commit any
crimes and harvested the bull illegally. The story on this, Wallly,
(24:27):
is they had some video of this where actual bow
hunter shot the bull, never shot a lethally, I mean,
it didn't kill it. Then another shot hunter shot put
a second arrow into the bull, did not kill it. Blad,
the conservation officer, the third hunter was able to shoot
(24:48):
the bull three more times than kill it. It's like what.
He then tagged the bull and claimed it for himself.
Another concluded that the third hunter, Blad, the other conservation
officer or sheriff, had not committed a crime in shooting
(25:09):
and harvesting the elk. That's kind of a bizarre story
to wade through, but I guess it's the old story
where you know, the last person that shoots it and
kills it. I guess it's his animal. As you well know, Wallly,
plenty of arguments of him out of that whole deal.
When there's a wounded animal.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Absolutely, that can be a pretty tricky tense situation.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
Yeah, we had talked about.
Speaker 4 (25:37):
Birds and migrations the other day, and I thought this
was kind of cool. The black swift is an uncommon
bird that nests on cliffs and behind waterfowls in western
North America. Like other swifts, it's graceful flyer and feeds
by catching insects high in the air. When it starts
flying south in the fall, it just keeps on flying,
sometimes for weeks or even months. Studies conducted with tiny
(25:58):
tracking device is placed on these birds show that black
swifts wintering over western South America may stay airborne more
than ninety nine percent of the time day and night,
sleeping on the wing. The same constant aerial behavior has
been found in other kinds of swifts and in some
seabirds as well, such as the great frigate birds. So Captain,
(26:19):
they sleep while they're flying.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
Wow, well, yeah, you know, there's a few people that
sleep while they're driving too, Wally. Hey, as long as
we're on birds, here's a little info for you, and
it's called a story about the migration that actually happens
down the Mississippi. And you can follow these migrations whether
it's fall or spring. By going to bird cast. But
(26:43):
the cool thing is this radar picks up you know,
when you have all the swans and the geese, the pelicans,
the ducks moving south. There are so many of those
that radar actually picks those up, and you can go
to a site called bird cast and I actually get
to witness some of this when they when the big
(27:04):
movement comes and I'm looking off the bluff over the
river at the cabin and yeah, we're talking hundreds of
thousands of ducks coming off the Iowa cornfields moving and
so bird cast Info is a place where you can
go and check that out spring or fall.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
That's pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
Yeah, Captin's time now for a Spring Valley Kennel field report.
If you've got a vacation coming up or a trip
and need a great place to board your dog or dogs,
contact showner Linda Timmins and Blue Mounts at the Spring
Valley Kennel.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Yeah, hey, Wally, this is interesting. Facial The FEDS are
now has a device that can do facial recognition on
invasive cart so when they come through the dam, they
can use this artificial intelligence to scan eighteen inches of
each fish that comes through the Fish ladders and if
(27:59):
it's in of carp then they can block that. Wow,
that's kind of bizarre but pretty cool. Actually, if you
can distinguish every fish and what species it is and
then you block them from coming through.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
Man, that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
Hey, I know some people have artificial intelligence too. Yeah, Jim,
Remember we interviewed some gal that had a factory that
takes the Asian carp and presses them into human food
and stuff and dog food. That was pretty amazing the
millions of pounds that she goes through.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
Yeah, and now they're talking cat food, dog food and
everything else. Okay, as long as we're on birds eagle flu,
this is not good. But up in International Falls, researchers
at Voyager National Park are finding empty eagle nests. Fifty
percent of the nests in the University of Michigan researchers
have checked in twenty twenty two were unoccupied.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
Not good.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
More than a third of the dead eagles they found
tested positive for avian influence. Uh, that is not good.
I don't know if we've seen any of that down
my way or around here, but that's not good. When
you talk fifty.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Boy, that's not good at all. Well, folks, Thanks for listening.
