Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio, a quest to
bring the outdoors to.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
You once again.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain and the
Wall Dog.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Good Saturday Morning.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
This is Wally the Wall Dog Vampy along with Captain Terry.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Friday Morning, Captain.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
Hey good Saday to Warring Tear One the outdoor world. Well,
I'm guessing a lot of people got out ice fishing
here in the last week. Things are chilling out for
a while now again, I guess, so making some ice,
but we can talk about that. Actually we're gonna yeah,
we're gonna talk about ice fishing. We're heading out the
(00:58):
Dakota Sunset Resort on Devil like Sean and Linda Timmins
all that, and as most of you know that Devil's
Late Bite stays pretty consistent and good travel destination. They
have all the lodging you need out there, and also
like Devil's like tourisms always available. You can give Susie
(01:19):
a call. And then the second segment, Waally and I
are going to look back at twenty twenty four. I'm
going to talk a little bit about what's happening behind
the scenes with all these laws that are coming into effect,
which is not good for hunters. The anti hunting movement
has a lot of money, and the more laws they
(01:39):
get in effect, the more that it's going to affect us.
And it seems like they're kind of on a roll.
And who knows, in fifty years, maybe we'll all be
hunting private resorts. I don't know, but anyway, we'll talk
about that. Otherwise, every week we get to talk about gear.
Speaker 6 (02:00):
It's time for the Ultimate gear Heads.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
This week's gearhead segment is followed by Middleton four Middleton, Wisconsin.
Speaker 7 (02:08):
Hey, before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate Gearheads check it out.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
They will set you straight.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker? You
paid too much? Want to enhance your truck or car?
They got the package over there for you. Stop in
and check it out.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Wally Yaptam.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
This week's really a cool piece of gear is a
ice shelter. It's the Frable ice hub HQ four four five.
This is a pro series ice hub shelter that comfortably
fishes three anglers with their gear. It's a warm design
with fully welded insulation. It has improved pole strength and
features four removable windows. Setup sizes eighty inch length, eighty
(02:49):
inch width and eighty inch height, allowing anglers to stand
up and stretch. The weight of the frable HQ four
four five hub shelter is thirty six pounds and include
ice anchors and tight down ropes. Captain Reglei it sells
around four hundred and thirty bucks. I see Wilderness Fishing
Game has them for two hundred and thirty dollars, a
(03:09):
great deal while they last.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
Wally, when you met you mentioned tie downs, remember go
Geebee Mark Martin ice fishing wins. And the second day
that whatever kind of shack I had, there was like
six people tried to get it folded up, and I said,
just smash the god damn thing and let's go. That's
(03:32):
what we did.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Well, it was seventy below zero out there.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
It was just brutal. I mean, we were liking survival
mode up there. That was just crazy. I guess I'll
never forget that adventure.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
That was nuts.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
No, and the crazy thing is the fish bit like hell.
And but yeah, tried to fold that thing up and
I said, just smash that thing, let's go, And that's
what we did. Oh, wise Wally. Last this past week,
some ice fisher went ice fishermen went through two on
Lake on Alaska. One in prayer to Sheen. I heard
(04:06):
they did have to take one of the guys in
Lake An, Alaska to the to the hospital by ambulance.
So you know, even though you know, we get a
couple days of cold weather again and there still takes
a little bit of effort to make this ice back up.
So you know, it isn't worth it. The fish are
not worth it. So just be safe out there.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
I got a couple events real quick coming up. The
twenty fifth Annual Marshall Lions Ice Fishery Festival be held
January seventeen, eighteen at the Fireman's Park Heated Shelter in Marshall, Wisconsin,
and the Stoton Conservation Club will be hosting their sixty
second Annual Ice Fishery January twenty fifth, from midnight to
four pm on lakey Ganza. Headquarters is at Springers on
(04:52):
lakey Ganza. For more info, called Roy Kwam at Kwam's
Marine and Motorsports Captain.
Speaker 8 (04:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (04:58):
Well, you know, well I got a joh I forget
I just don't remember if I mentioned this last week
deer hunting story. But maybe you can tell me if
I did. But I thought it was kind of important
that three deer hunters died by dragging their deer out
in a forty eight hour period, three heart attacks. And
you know this happens every year. Wally. The guy's ages
(05:21):
were geez, one guy was fifty seven, one guy sixty five,
one guy eighty three. So you know, they weren't a
couple of them were not real old fellas. And it
just goes to show you that, you know, you get
all pumped up and you're dragging a deer and you know, excited,
and I mean, but for three people to die in
(05:41):
forty eight hours, that's kind of weird.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
So yeah, well, boy, that's sad.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
You know, you hadn't mentioned that yet, but I guess
it's good to have a buddy with you and don't
over exert yourself, right, try to prass yourself.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
But that's that's really the thing of it. And now
you know the thing about it is now, if you
are by yourself, you can basically cut those deer right
up in the woods. And I mean that's what we
do with elk. They're on the ground. We take the
height off one side, take the quarters the loins, and
you know it's the old no gut process, and you know,
(06:15):
sometimes maybe that's the way to go when you're hunting
by yourself all the time. So otherwise, coming up, we're
gonna talk ice fishing in Devil's Lake, North Dakota with
Sean Timm and stay with us.
Speaker 9 (06:30):

Available anywhere with your free iHeartRadio. Wappy, you were listening
to Ultimate Outdoors Radio. Let's get back to the Captain
and the Waldorf.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Hey, welcome back, folks, and thanks for listening. This segment
is brought to you by the Dakota Sunset Resort in Minwaukeean,
North Dakota, located right on the beautiful West Bay of
Devil's Lake. Devil's Lake is famous for its excellent walleye
and perch fishing. Plus they're a big pike, white bass,
and even tiger muskies. Joining us next is the owner
of Dakota Sunset Resort, Sean Timmins.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Welcome to the show, Thanks Wally, Sean.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
How are the ice conditions on Devil's Lake and the
surrounding smaller lakes right now?
Speaker 12 (08:47):
Ice conditions are great? That last year we had a
lot of pressure ridges in that and we don't have
that this year. So we're looking at anywhere from sixteen
plus inches on Devils and smaller lakes, you're looking at
eighteen plus. We were actually driving pickups on some of
the lakes to the north of this last weekend, so yeah,
(09:11):
we're in great conditions.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Awesome.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
How is the ice fishing going and are the walleyes
biting yet?
Speaker 12 (09:19):
Yeah, the smaller lakes have been really good for walleyes,
getting a few giant perch mixed in there, and like
over by us on the west side there, the flats
are turning on pretty good and some of those hups
and those points are producing a lot of nice walleyes
for us. In the last week.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
You had mentioned to me you guys caught like fifteen
really nice walleyes in an hour and a half.
Speaker 12 (09:47):
The other day, Yeah, yeah, we got on a good bite.
We found a nice pot of walleyes that were sticking
around and it didn't take our clients long to I
get their limit of you know, anywhere from sixteen to
twenty two inch walleyes.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Great eaters, perfect eating. What techniques are catching most of
the walleyes? I know there's many ways to catch a walleye,
but what do you like doing right now?
Speaker 12 (10:17):
Right now, the bite has pretty much been jigging with
buckshots and cast masters, jigging wraps, ripping wraps. They're all working.
It didn't seem like the last couple of days. It
didn't even seem like color really mattered, which is kind
of nice. But yeah, it isn't gonna last forever that way,
(10:40):
I know that. But no, right now it's been really
good and most of them are coming off of jigging.
We did try dead sticking, and they just didn't have
a lot of interest in it.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
When I was out a year ago, six of us
made a trip and stayed at your place, which was
a beautiful place, lots of room for six people in
a cabin, great place to cook and everything, but you
had told me buy some Northland tackle Buckshot rattlespoons UV
pink because they glow and the walleyes would really bite
on those with a minnow head. So I got a
(11:14):
dozen of those, Sean and that was our hot bait.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Is that still really good?
Speaker 12 (11:19):
That color has always been good up here. It's probably
my favorite go to, although I will tell you that
Acme came out with that cast Master Moonshine glow and
that in a Wonderbread color has been producing a lot
of fish, especially in low light conditions. First light in
the morning, last light at night. It's been just crushing them.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
That wonderbread is kind of a white and then it's
got dots on it, like red and blue and so on.
And for the last year or so, that seems to
be a really hot color and all types of jigs
and spoons.
Speaker 12 (11:56):
Yeah, it's been the last couple of years we've been
using it here and it's been one of my Between
that UV pink Buckshot and that that's my two favorite
baits that I'll put on and jigu with.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Now, how about the perch.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Devil's Lake is noted for some really big perch and
the surrounding lakes have them too. Are the perch starting
to bite out there?
Speaker 12 (12:20):
Yeah, we're starting to get some perch out on the
main lake basin, you know, East Bay, Tiger Bay. You know,
we're we're starting to get on some perch now now
that the ice is good and safe whenever we can
get out on those big, bigger basins and we're getting
some nice perch. And my guides are taking clients down
(12:41):
there and they're they're starting to get on them. So
the bite is just getting heated up for those perch.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Well, Sean, you guys have a beautiful resort called the
Dakota Sunset Resort Devil's Lake, North Dakota. How long have
you and Linda had the resort and how can people
reach you?
Speaker 2 (13:00):
So this is go.
Speaker 12 (13:02):
We're going into our third ice season and you know
we did build everything brand new, which you got to
see last year. So everything's new and very clean and
set up nice. And you know, every cabin is almost
the twelve hundred square feet, so they're they're big cabins.
(13:22):
And you can either reach out by a phone, which
would be seven oh one three eight one six zero
eight seven, or you can reach out on messenger, you know,
we or text. You can text you that way too,
and we get back to you within an hour or
two generally, so.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
And you're able to guide people, Sean.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
And also you have some guys working for you if
people want to come out and really get on the
fish quick.
Speaker 12 (13:52):
Yeah, we have all my guys guide out of snowbars
so you can stay comfortable even in the worst conditions.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Awesome, well, Sean, thanks for joining us, and I'll look
forward to coming out there against some day and catching
all those fish.
Speaker 12 (14:04):
We look forward to Avenue.
Speaker 4 (14:06):

Speaker 3 (15:57):
A minute going into twenty twenty five, look at twenty
twenty four. You know, I've talked many times on shows
about what's going on behind the scenes in this gun world,
the loss of hunting rights. So I'm gonna go through
a few of these as to what's going on every
day out there in some of these states, and because
(16:19):
people need to be aware of it, and you know,
to kick this thing off. Here's one where the Biden
Harris this was just this fall past fall, Biden Harris
administration ban shooting at the Bear Ears Monument National Monument
Park in Utah. Now we're talking one point three million
(16:43):
acres and whether this ends up happening or not, but
they decide basically to ban any type of shooting or
I think hunting.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
Also in this and on the same note, the Sonoran
Desert National Monument, which is four hundred and eighty five
thousand acres, was closed off to recreational shooting too, and
you know, Congress quickly passed legislation to restore the funding
(17:19):
for that and get it open back up. But you know,
this is stuff that's happening every day as far as
closing things. Traveling over to Illinois, Illinois's gun and magazine
ban got struck down in court on November eighth, the
Southern District Illinois struck down the provisions of Protect Illinois
(17:42):
Community Act. Basically, they wanted to ban assault weapons and
large capacity magazines. That actually got shut down. And you know,
I've talked about the Colorado lion hunting ban, where I
suggest any of you grew out there that are fighting bands,
(18:02):
you need to look at the model that Colorado created.
They had every key person on that, from ranchers to
senators to politicians, and they created a model that beat
That won this band when it was voted on in November.
Otherwise that would have been shut down permanently. Traveling down
(18:24):
to Florida, on November fifth, twenty twenty four, Florida citizens
voted yes on a ballot to amend the state Constitution
to affirm and protect Meridians the right to fish and hunt.
And Wally, I didn't know this, but that is now
the twenty fourth state that had to do these similar
(18:47):
constitutional amendments to protect their hunting and fishing rights. And lastly,
maybe not lastly, but during this last fall in Denver,
I never heard anything about this too. There was also
a vote to ban slaughterhouse, all slaughterhouses within county or
(19:09):
city limits. What would happen here, Wally, is you know
all the hides that are harvested off, whether it's cattle
or wild game, and you know, and that's used for
cowboy hats, for cowboy boots and everything. Activists wanted this
completely shut down in the Denver city limits, which would
(19:30):
eliminate a business from making a cowboy hat. So, Wally,
this is just a few of the things that are
going on. I could keep going, but you know, it's
people need to be aware that this is going to
happen in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Also, oh Captain, we got to see the school shootings
are very sad. And keep an eye on your kids
and say no to them in situations and know what
they're doing at all times. Be responsible, lock your guns up,
lock your ammo up. And there's laws in place right now,
keep enforcing them properly. We know, OK, guns don't kill people.
(20:07):
People kill people, So let's get an eye on these kids.
See what they're doing. You know, get ahead of the problem.
You can't just ban guns. There's over fifty million guns
out there. The number is probably hire by now. You
can't just ban guns. It's not the answer.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
It's not going to happen. No, No, not going to happen. Well,
it's a hot subject, Wally, and my take is on it.
We can scream mental issues gun issues till hell freeze
is over. You need to lock these schools down, put
metal detectors in them one entrance. Hire a veteran as
a security guard. There's many veterans out there that would
(20:43):
love to be a security guard. Pay them a decent wage.
I can't believe that any school board that would approach
their you know, local residents in that district for extra
money to put a double door lockdown on every school
with a metal detel. That is the quickest and easiest way,
(21:03):
because at some point somebody's gonna sue these school boards
or sue the school for not protecting their kids. So
that's all I'm gonna say about it, because otherwise I
get too fired up and we just someone needs to
act on something.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Yeah, and I don't have a problem with teachers learning
how to shoot responsibly with guns. And if you can
seal Carrie, be responsible. Yeah, and that's just the way
it is.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
Well, folks, get outside, get those kids outside, enjoy this
winter weather. Go snowshoeing, sledding, whatever, Stay with us, You'll
be right, We'll be right back.
Speaker 14 (21:44):

I know, I'm calling Cleary.

Speaker 5 (24:03):
This uda comes from my travels back from elk hunting
this year, which was a late which is normally a
November December hunt. It's late and you know all in
the Western States wall you get to permit you can
cut your Christmas tree. And so I'm heading on down
the interstate and I saw a lot of people hauling
Christmas trees. We're heading down the interstate, you know, God
(24:25):
here locked in at about eighty two, and I go
buy this guy with a Christmas tree on top of
his car. The trouble is he tied it on backwards,
so all the branches were breaking off. I thought, I
thought I wanted to take a picture of it, but
I was driving too fast. I thought, he's going to
(24:46):
get home and he's going to say, man, that's a
Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Oh it was funny. It's the
only guy I've ever seen Christmas tree backwards and when
you're doing it's not a good idea. So I don't
know how many branches he had left when he got home,
but I'm sure his wife probably says our words, you
(25:08):
get that thing?
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Much did you pay for that ugly tree?
Speaker 5 (25:13):
God? That one's funny. I thought that was one of
the best things I've seen.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
That reminds me when you get snow and ice like
on the back of your truck, you really got to
clean that off. Otherwise you're going down the highway and
it comes off in big.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Sheets, you know. Yeah, yeah, it's dangerous.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
It really is. Yeah. Time for our Spring Valley cantl
Field Report, Wally, what's happening?
Speaker 4 (25:34):
Well, you know, if you're traveling or want to get
away for a few days and need a great place
to board your dog or dogs, contact showner Linda Timmins
at the Spring Valley Kennel in Blue Mountains, Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
Yeah, if you had too many family over for Christmas,
for they stayed too long, yeah, bork your dog and
take a vacation there. There you go. Otherwise, you know,
it's kind of that time of year, Wally. We get
out of Christmas and wala, you know, on New year's
and people are looking for things to do, and so
I got a couple ideas here, and a few of
(26:05):
these we used to do. But you know, one thing,
and all these are good family activities and one thing
I always enjoyed, and I still have my set of
snow shoes. And back when we were in the middle
of the Alkyri introduction, we used to always go up
snowshoeing up there in northern Wisconsin and just walk around
looking for tracks. And you know the thing about that
(26:26):
is that and if you've got kids along, it can
be very educational for him because identifying tracks and birds
and it's so peaceful out there. But it's just a
cool getaway. The biggest thing is if you're going to
get snowshoes, get ones that will support you and don't
sink in. But it's a pretty cool way to enjoy
(26:46):
the winter.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Speaking at tracks Cam, do you ever go rabbit hunting
in the snow with beagles?
Speaker 5 (26:52):
Oh? God, I used to live to hunt rabbits. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Oh, it's so fun.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
When you hear those hone dogs and they spot a rabbit,
they're changes and it gets pretty exciting out there. So
rabbit hunting's fun to do this time of year.
Speaker 5 (27:05):
Yeah, I had beagles growing up, and that's that's really
all we did was chased rabbits and had rabbits do
and all sorts of other good stuff. But otherwise news.
I don't know if people know this, but starting in
twenty twenty five, when you buy a state parksticker, it
will be good for twelve months before depending on when
(27:28):
you bought it. It just the deadline ran out coming
into the new year. But now whenever you purchase it,
it will be good for twelve months, and should mention that.
Actually it's the anniversary of Wisconsin state parks. They are
one hundred and twenty five years old. Wally, take a
(27:49):
guess where the first state park was created in Wisconsin.
I know you're not going to get it, but take
a guess.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
I'm just going to try Devil's Lake State Park, Baraboo.
Speaker 14 (27:59):
No, the.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
It was state Park on the Saint Croix River Way
back in nineteen hundred. And there's actually going to be
an anniversary celebration. I would go to the d NR
Facebook page that's going to be happening. So, I mean,
that's pretty cool. One hundred and twenty five years of
(28:25):
state park So what else you got, Wally.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
Well, you know, the elk counting is kind of getting
exciting in Wisconsin. It looks like they might have five
cow elk tags in play for Jackson County Herd for
twenty twenty five, so I'm anxious to see that, and
it sounds like that herd is doing pretty good.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Captain.
Speaker 5 (28:44):
Yeah, one more quick idea before we get out of
here for winter fun winter camping, if you ever tried it,
We do it every year out in the mountains, and
it's usually December. This year we fought was fifteen inches
of snow, but we get our tents up, got wood, stove,
got wood, and uh, you know, it's pretty nice. You
(29:06):
don't have to drive to town when you're done hunting,
and uh we uh we eat pretty well with some
big old, you know, plates of pre prepared, pre prepared food.
So another good thing to maybe get your kids out.
Give that a try, and don't go when it's twenty below.
But it's pretty cool once you get out there and
(29:29):
get set up. So otherwise the biggest thing is just
getting getting them outside.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
Get outdoors.
Speaker 4 (29:37):
Hey, thanks for listening to our show, and don't forget
