Speaker 1 (00:13):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Radio on a quest to bring the outdoors to.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
You once again.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain and the
Wall Dog.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Good Saturday morning.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
This is Wally the Wall Dog Vampy, along with Captain
Terry Friday morning.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Captain, Hey, good morning to everyone in the outdoor world.
How about these tempsh Man, things are firing up. The
fish kind of went a little bit slow and now
it's picking back up. There was a little transition and
water temp which I found made a huge difference for
a few days, and I think Wally the same. So
kind of nice. Starting to feel like fall now with
(00:58):
the with the leaves coming down and squirrels are packing
away the old hickory nuts. So on this week's show,
we're going to talk with Dan Whytuzik, and actually Dan
and his partner, Jason Summers. They're both muskie anglers. By
the way, him and his partner won the PMTT Top
Gun Team of the Year, which is pretty tough to do,
(01:22):
especially in this day and age with pressure on muskies everywhere.
And then our second guest is we're going to head
up to Vortex and Barnabill again talk with Sawyer Briel.
All their fall classes are scheduled and they have all
sorts of you know, long range shooting classes, pistol classes,
women's classes and Wally will testify it is a fantastic
(01:46):
venue up their underground shooting range state of the art.
It's really something to see if you haven't been up there.
But otherwise every week we get to talk about gear.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Heads. This week's
gearhead segment is followed five Middleton Ford Middleton wiscon said, Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate gearheads check it out.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
They will set you straight. Hey, folks, you don't see
that Middleton forward stick or you paid too much good
time to get that car winter ries, then you can
shop for vortex products at the same time. How about that, Wally?
What do we got.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Captain?
Speaker 4 (02:24):
This week's really cool piece of gear is a fishing lure.
It's the VMC bucktail jig. This highly effective jig is
available in sizes from one eighth ounce up to three
eighths of an ounce. Jigs are highly effective in both
shallow and deep water. Bucktail jigs extremely easy to use.
You can use them on a steady retrieve, hop them
or drag them along with your trolling motor. Hair jigs
(02:47):
like sharshroos with white excel for late fall walleyes and saugers.
Tip them with a minnow spray, bang on them and
hang on. The addition of scent will increase your catch rate,
and scent stays on bucktail jigs very well, Captain. As
of water gets colder, the hairjig really comes into its own.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yep, and the flukes and paddle tales are actually working
right now kind of everywhere. But you know, Wally, the
good thing to do is if you've got two guys
in the boat, one guy put cent on one not.
And I mean it's at times it'll show you the
difference why you do do need to use some sense
otherwise happening in the world. Here's a not so good
(03:27):
story about our Wisconsin DNR. You didn't know this, Wally.
I don't know if you know it. Millions of dollars
in the hole. Just another millions of dollars in the
hole story. Wisconsin DNR Fish and Wildlife account is in
the hole like fifteen point five million dollars. That's not good.
(03:50):
So the account would have already been in deficit of
not for a twenty five million dollar legislative approved transfer
from DNA ours Forestry account in twenty three to twenty four.
The account spending for this year authorized is seventy four
point six million dollars twenty seven percent law enforcement, twenty
(04:14):
five percent fisheries, eighteen percent wildlife. So not good there, Wally, it's.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
Not good, hey, Capting on a bright note, I got
something good here. On Wednesday, October twenty third, Cedar Valley
Hunting preservo host a Guarding Against Cancer fundraising event in
Spring Green, Wisconsin. The event starts at ten thirty am.
There will be pheasant hunting tower shoots, shooting games, and
lunch and dinner will be provided.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
The cost is.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
Four hundred and fifty dollars per hunter. Contact Jeff or
Jennifer Meyer at Cedar Valley Hunting Preserve for more details.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Captain, Yeah, Wally, I'm still staying on the vote coming
in Colorado for this line and Bobcat Band. And here's
a quote from the Wild Sheep Foundation executive is this
is wrong on so many levels, and it's not just
a Colorado issue. I talked to some people this weekend,
(05:09):
and if this thing passes, the anti hunters are going
to jump all over this and they're going to start
going from state to state and shutting down hunting seasons.
And there's nothing we can do about it. Where the
states that have the Citizens' Initiative law. The good thing
is the Wild Chief Foundation donate one hundred thousand dollars
to fight this thing. There definitely is a lot more
(05:34):
groups getting into fighting this vote, supplying money this time.
So we will see Wally. The wolf thing went through,
so hopefully this doesn't. That's in November, so well.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
You know, part of being an American is being able
to hunt and fish and enjoy the outdoors. It's a
shame how some people can steer things the wrong direction.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Captain.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
That's why hunter's got to speak up, join a hunting
organization and let them hear your voice.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
You know.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Yep, Hey, coming up. Our first guest, Dan Waytouziak talking
Muskies and Sawyer Briel from Vortex's Edge talking the fall classes.
Stay with us.

why they're on your radio and not your TV. Let's

been outdoors radio.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Hell me, welcome back folks, and thanks for listening.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
This segment is brought to you by the Wollersheim Winery
and Distillery, located in the rolling Hills of Prairie to
Sac stop in for a tour and enjoy a great
lunch at the Wollersheim Bistro. Joining us next is a
professional muskie angler from Eagle River, Wisconsin. Dan and his
fishing partner Jason Summers had a great year on the
Professional Muskie Tournament Trail. Their hard work and muskie success
(08:54):
earned them the prestigious twenty twenty four PMTT Top Gun
Team of the Year.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Away.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Since nineteen ninety nine, Dan has twenty nine Muskie Tournament
first place finishes to his credit. Dan with Tusaic, Welcome
to the show.
Speaker 10 (09:11):
Thank you, Wally, I appreciate being here.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Dan.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
How long have you fished for muskies and how many
years have you competed in the PMTT.
Speaker 10 (09:21):
Well, gosh, that's a good question. I have to remember
now it's I'm fifty three, so it's probably forty years
muskie fishing. I started out as a walleye angler perch fisherman,
and then eventually I got the muskie bug around thirteen
years old, so it's been forty years, and as far
as the PMTT, they always came to Eagle River, Wisconsin,
(09:46):
and I fish that since probably around two thousand and
two two thousand and three, so quite a few years,
but not often have I actually fished the entire tournament trail.
This year I had the opportunity to do that.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Well, Muskies are difficult to catch, but you got to
be persistent and think smart trying to catch them. Tell
us about the twenty twenty four Recon Boats World Championship,
which is held recently in the Eagle River area.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
How did that go?
Speaker 10 (10:20):
It went really well, had a lot of fun, and
you're right, muskies are hard to catch. I had your
friend up here over the weekend, Kevin Olsen, and I
tried so hard to get him on fish and I
completely failed. It was so hard this past weekend, but
(10:41):
we tried hard, had fun, but didn't catch them. So
they are a tough fish to catch sometimes. This weekend
proved it. So as far as the tournament trail this year,
I saw the schedule and I saw that the championship
was on my home water here in Eagle River, so
I was really motive baited to fish it. And so
(11:02):
I reached out to a competitor of mine, Jason Summers,
who actually he's the one who invented the Medusa. He
you know, eventually sold the company, but always always really
you know, stayed in touch with him and a good friend,
and so asked him. He said yes. So we went
to Kentucky and uh water. They dropped seven feet of
(11:26):
water out of that before we got there, so that
makes it hard. But we knew that the water would
stabilize by the last day. That was going to be
our best chance. And and so I think we fished
just harder and more intently on Sunday than everybody else.
And I think there was eight or nine fish caught,
and we caught three of them on that Sunday. So
(11:47):
had a really good last day of the tournament. So
that that was fun to you know, fish that well
together and zero in on something. J and Summers had
confidence in a couple stretches of water, and that's all
I needed. And then we we put on some favored
(12:08):
presentations and went to work and got three bites, got
them all on the boat. So we ended up in
second place. Nate Asphar and Brian Krowd beat us by
one inch that tournament, So that was a that was
a good showing. From there, we went up to Madison
Wally in your backyard there, and again that was really hard.
(12:29):
All the tournaments this year were grinder bites, which which
you know we're good at that, but you'd like them
to bite once in a while, wouldn't you all We.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
So, yeah, it's an immense amount of work and casting
just hoping that you'd get that bite.
Speaker 10 (12:46):
Yeah, yeah, Hope's a bad strategy. So we always say
let it happen while making it happen, so really really
dig in and concentrate and fun you know, you know,
look at fundamentals and do what we can to if
we get that, I get them in the net. So
but we went up to Madison and again tough, tough conditions.
(13:06):
If you remember, it was blowing like crazy, not a
cloud in the sky for miles high water and so
we did manage to see just two fish in practice.
So we had to kind of off the wall type
locations that I always looked for and had you know,
(13:27):
at least two spots liked in other spots, and we
didn't catch anything on Saturday, never saw fish, very few
fish caught Sunday. Guess what. With five minutes left, we
went to the windiest part of the lake which it
was howling, and wouldn't you know what, we got bit
(13:49):
by a big one five minutes left. In those tournaments,
you have to your text messages have to reach the
tournament official before before the tournament ends at one o'clock
and with eight seconds left, our our text came through
an accountered and it was good enough for third place.
That was a forty sixth intern so only bye the tournament.
(14:11):
Only fish we saw and it was right at the end,
so we fished harder and harder as a went.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Well, Dan, then, thanks so much for joining us. We
got to run.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Appreciate all you do for the casting for kids the
mark Ozeki's event, and I know with your help and
others we've raised over eight hundred and twenty thousand so
far for the American Family Children's Hospital. So thanks for
the good work and we'll see you again this year
in me.
Speaker 10 (14:38):
Okay, sounds good love casting for kids.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Thanks Dan, Folks.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
That was Dan with Tuasick from Evil River, Wisconsin.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
Stay tuned, we'll be right back.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Hey, you want to remind you all out there, Vortex
Optics has ball classes coming up. We are going to
talk about those. Uh Sawyer Briels joining me today, Goodmore
and Sawyer Jerry Well Sawyer.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
You know, for people that have not visited the Vortex,
uh I call it the Empire up there with all
the shooting ranges and and gear and stuff. You guys
offer classes from you know, from beginner to advance. But
before we jump into this, UH you mentioned you got
another uh Vortex event coming back that uh I attended
(16:53):
last year. You want to chat on that.
Speaker 14 (16:55):
Absolutely, so the Hunter Sight and so we'll be bringing
back bringing that back again this year. So that'll be
November twelfth and thirteenth, So mark that on your calendars
from four to eight PM on both nights. So the
way that works is we'll send out probably in October,
so keep your eye peeled. We'll send out a sign
up and you just reserve a spot. It's a free event.
(17:17):
You bring your deer rifle in, we give it a quick,
quick once over, we can take a look at the optic,
take a look at the rifle, and then you go
on range with one of our instructors and you can
site it in. So I know November weather can be
a little bit a little bit hard to plan for,
so fully indoor range get we'll get your rifle sited
in and you'll be good to go. And that's free
(17:39):
of charge. So look for an announcement in October to
sign up for your free slot. Yeah, but that's November
twelfth and thirteenth.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
And that's an evening event. Evening doings, yep. Okay, because
I think last year was at an afternoon last year,
I'm trying to remember, but it was a little at
a both.
Speaker 14 (18:00):
We swapped it to more of an evening so people
obviously with work and daycare and pick up from school,
wanted to make a little bit easier for folks. So
it's pretty quick. You'll be in and out more than
likely in a half hour and feeling confidence with your
deer rifle before you hop into the stands.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Well, it's it's worth it for people just to go
up there and see your complex. But let's jump over
towards the classes in your rangees. You guys have one
hundred yard range and these all indoor, state of the art,
fifty yard range, twenty five yard range. I want to
touch on those. Slawyer.
Speaker 14 (18:36):
Absolutely, just a really special place, So Vortex Edge. So
we've got a team of full time instructors. It is there.
It is their job to provide education and instruction for
folks that stop buy so vortex edge dot com. Just
head there, you're going to see all the classes we offer,
like you mentioned Terry, some intro stuff, some more unique
(18:58):
kind of higher level stuff. We do a night vision course,
so everything from intro to pistol to things like night vision.
One or two day courses you can take multiple at
a time if you sign up for multiple over the
course of a couple of days. Just a really fantastic
way to improve your skills, whether you're looking to get
better at pistol. We offer a couple hundred marksmanship courses
(19:19):
over the course of the year. Those are super popular.
But I think the big thing is heading to that
website and finding something that you're interested in, because they
do fill up quick. They're all very popular classes. So
definitely head to the website vortex edge dot com and
take a look.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
I'll mention quick you also have a thirty four hundred
square foot tactical shooting house. You have classrooms equipped with
all the audio visual, you got cleaning and locker rooms
where people can go in and clean their firearms, and
on your retail showroom. So we got a few minutes,
two and a half minutes left, let's talk about classes.
Let's jump over to that. So I want to start
(20:00):
off with October thirtieth, Sawyer just because of when this
is gonna air. But the first class available after our
interview will be You've got pistol, You've got long range,
you've got carbing, all sorts of good stuff there.
Speaker 14 (20:16):
Absolutely and we recommend people start at either that intro
or that one stage. I've taken almost all of them.
They're fantastic courses. The instructors are phenomenal. The intro courses
are gonna be a little bit shorter, they're not quite
as long as the others. And then for example pistol,
Pistel one, two, and three, those are each going to
(20:37):
be one day courses, so they fit a lot in,
they pass a lot in. You're gonna be moving, you're
gonna be shooting a lot. It's really phenomenal. For those
intro courses, firearm and ammunition is provided, which is a
really really awesome thing for someone looking to get into shooting.
So even if you're a even if you're a season
shooter yourself, you got a buddy or someone you know
(20:58):
that's looking to get into it, bring them with you.
Take an intro course with them.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Yeah, I see that's eight am to five. It's a
nine hour course. But I could bet even the older
fellows that have shot stuff all their life you, I'm
sure you can learn something. So and then like jumping
into November sixth, we've got about a minute left, sawyer.
You got the long range shooting class and another one
is intro to carbing on November fifth.
Speaker 14 (21:26):
Yep, so long range is going to be a deep
dive into ammunition, ballistics, learning more about your rifle, learning
more about optics, reading the wind, making wind calls, That
is a really really cool, really hands on one obviously,
with a lot of crossover to hunting as well. You're
really just going to become a better shooter with your
rifle after that course. And then Carbing. Carbing pretty self explanatory.
(21:51):
They cover a lot in that one too. That's indoor
on the range. Another just phenomenal course.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Okay, I'll run out of time, but I'm gonna mention
there's a women's pill still course on November fifteenth. All
these you can find on Vortex's website. Sorry, you want
to mention the Deer season, the Double Evening event up
there again.
Speaker 14 (22:12):
Yep, So November twelfth and thirteenth, we're doing our hunter
site and again the sign up for that's going to
go live in October, so keep your eyes feeled there.
But a free event, bring your deal, bring your deer rifle,
and get it sited in.
Speaker 1 (22:25):
Okay, go to Vortex Optics Vortex Edge for all these classes, Sawyer,
thanks for jumping on board.
Speaker 14 (22:32):
You bet, thanks, Jerry.

Captain on this week's UDA, there is four ultimate dumbasses
right here in Wisconsin. Wally, you know any dumbasses in Wisconsin?
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Just four?
Speaker 7 (25:31):
I know?
Speaker 3 (25:31):
Well, I've probably been a UDA at one point in
my life.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
We all.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
I left my map.
Speaker 4 (25:37):
Book on top of my truck. Kate and I were
trout fishing and it flew out onto the beltline and
it had notes from twenty years of hunting and fishing.
I ran out and traffic and grabbed it that one year,
So I've been a UDA.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
Yeah, Wally. I talked to a guy and I felt
sorry for him. He was halfway into his duck blind
Saturday morning forgot he's gun. He was coming back out
in the darkest Where are you going get my gun?
I felt bad for the guy. He was actually from
Sack Wally. Anyway, on this week's UDA, I'm following up
from this Fondolac coaching story last week. I believe I
(26:11):
talked about. They did charge four people. It was a
thirty six year old woman and three sixteen year old boys,
and this was spread over three counties in Wisconsin since
twenty twenty three. They shot over one hundred deer. They
were charged with shooting, mistreating animals, harassment, and yeah, they
(26:35):
were the dos. I I read somewhere they were just
shooting the dos and the bucks. They were cutting the
heads off. But hats off to the DNR to pursue
this and get these people charged. But you just can't
make this stuff up, Wally.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
How stupid.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
I don't know if the woman was driving them around
or what would she see in this. Also, if they're
wasting all that meat, it's like a throw kill.
Speaker 3 (26:59):
It's a shame.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Maybe they had in case of butsch flight in a
truck too.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
I'm sure they did more than the case.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Hey, here's an interesting story We always report on this
every year. The Python Challenge winner down in Florida who
won the challenge this year. He removed twenty pythons from
the Florida Everglades during the ten day hunt and he
took home the ten thousand dollars grand prize. If there
(27:32):
was about twenty two thousand pythons, there's been about twenty
two thousand pythons removed since twenty twenty. And this is
there an invasive for people that don't know what that's
why they need to get him out of there. And
you know that Wallly Sopp.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Do you have to bring him back alive? Or do you?
Can you kill?
Speaker 5 (27:49):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (27:50):
I think you blast him and then bring him back.
Be a little wouldn't that be a little tricky to
bring back ten pythons.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
In your truck? Yeah, that'd be a trick.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Your wife's truck.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
So it's time now for.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
Our Spring Valley Kennel Field Report. If you have a
hunting trip coming up and you need a great place
to board your dog or dogs, contact the Spring Valley
Kennel in Blue Mountains, Wisconsin. They have an awesome facility
where they exercise your dogs, they feed them well.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Captain and they play them some country music.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Yep, won't belong. Ice Fisher will be coming up and
they'll be booking trips to the Dakota, so check that out.
Whilely a bearer of bad news here too, this article
came out of Outdoor News, which is a fantastic paper.
Hats off to that crew. And this is about the
Jackson County elk. They are like wiping out the farmers'
fields of elfalfa and such, and this Town of Nap
(28:49):
board chairman has been looking for a way to deal
with it. He thinks that the way to deal with
is to have the DNR create a elk sanctuary and
plant these fields the Polly's elk away from these farm fields.
So it's not good. Let's see what the cost since
(29:10):
they were introduced was thirty two thousand so far in
crop damage. So and that's mainly just a couple of farmers,
so they're kind of located in one area. But once again,
they might be increasing tags next year for some crop damage.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Well, I think that's a good solution to plant some
alternative crops for them. And then Captain last year he
did a story how youth got an elk with his
with their father. And now this year a ten year
old from cross Planes has got a tag to shoot elk.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Dad.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
Yeah, it's dad and him stuff by Wildern's fishing game
and they're buying some copper ammo and they have to
take some classes and stuff, and that that youngster could
possibly shoot an elk this year.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
So I'm going to follow up on that.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Very cool. Yeah, Well, I always like to talk about
the gun industry conservation and all that, just so you
know how much that the gun industry donates towards conservation.
The gun industry taxes paid was seventeen billion towards wildlife
conservation since nineteen thirty seven. That's a lot of money.
(30:22):
So hats off to you know. I mean I always say, Wally,
everyone needs to support this, not just guys that hunt
and fish and buy firearms, because it's coming to the
point that you know, everyone's going to have to support
these projects.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
So absolutely well, folks, thanks for listening.
