Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio want.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
A quest to bring the outdoors to you.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Once again.

Speaker 4 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors, The Captain and the
Wall Dog, Hey.

Speaker 5 (00:30):
Good Saturday Morning.

Speaker 6 (00:31):
This is Wally the Wall Dog Vampy along with Captain
Terry Friday Morning.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Captain Good Saturday morning morning, Walldog, oh Man. I don't
know if we're in summer fall or whatever, but it
looks like these temps are gonna continue, Wally, and I'll
tell you what I think. It's kind of hurting the
duck report, the deer hunting report, because these bucks just
aren't gonna gear up when it's seventy some degrees. I

(00:56):
know a couple of nice ones have been shot, but
all the leaves are still on the trees in the woods.
I don't know it's gonna be a light one this year,
but anyway, we're traveling to northern Wisconsin, where probably the
colors are pretty bright right now. If you're looking for
something to do. Andrea Joe, a great sponsor of the show,
Realtor is going is on a duck and grouse hunt

(01:17):
in the north Woods. And then we're gonna chat with
John Reinhardt on late season walleyes and gills on wing
dams on the Mississippi River, and I've been doing quite
a bit of that. We'll talk about that, especially with
this low flow is kind of crazy. But and John
Wi'll follow up with some of his tips to watch

(01:38):
for the migration of these ducks, which will probably be
in December. But otherwise, every week we get to talk
about gear.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Heads. This week's
gearhead segment is followed five Middleton, four Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate Gearheads check it out.

Speaker 5 (01:59):
They will set you straight.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Hey, folks, you don't see the Middleton forge sticker?

Speaker 5 (02:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Paid too much?

Speaker 5 (02:05):
Wally happen.

Speaker 6 (02:07):
This week's really cool piece of gear is an onboard
battery charger. It's the Menkota Precision Model MK three thirty
PCL onboard battery charger. The small unit mounts easily in
your boat. It has three banks, ten apps per bank,
perfect for charging two deep cycle trolling motor batteries plus
one starting battery. The onboard Precision chargers are manufactured with

(02:30):
LED indicator lights that are built into the charger to
inform you of the charge state. PCL chargers have an
option for charging lithium marine batteries. Also, the MK three
thirty PCL Menkota chargers sells for around four hundred bucks Captain,
And that is money well spent.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, a boat, money well spent. That's what you tell
your wife. Well, oh it's well spent.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
Yes, Well you know what boat stands for.

Speaker 6 (02:56):
Yeah, boat is bust out another thousand, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
That's true. Hey, here's my hot tip with this warm weather,
clean your freezer out. I see Brian Steetzer's been doing
some cooking and kind of getting stuff out of the freezer.
And actually Mary and I've been cooking up a storm.
We got chili and beef stew, barbecue, and we even

(03:21):
made some pheasant veggie soup, all stored up in containers
in the freezer. So kind of nice to go through
that and have that all prepared so you can just
grab it. A good time to do it, being's it's
so warm.

Speaker 6 (03:34):
Out, that is a good idea and make room for
this year's harvest, so that's smart.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yeah, and then you find out what you got in
there too, so that's a good thing to do. Otherwise,
Wally Deer hunting seems to be slow. I know the
ducks are real slow man. We didn't even hear a
shot on the Mississippi this past couple of days, and
not much to report except one deer here and there.
But remember, tree stand safety is the important thing because

(04:00):
people fall out every year or so.

Speaker 6 (04:04):
Yeah, how about fishing. There's been a lot of boats
out because it's so comfortable out there. People aren't putting
their boats away yet.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
I didn't catch any fish, Wally.

Speaker 6 (04:15):
I don't thought you want to see your hotspots on
the Mississippi River.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
I'll tell you the scoop. There's fish to be caught,
but they're scattered the wing dams that are really scattered.
Some bites at the dam, but it seems to be
bite windows. But what we found best, which I always
find best in the fall, is white hair jigs, some
paddle tails we use, some willow cats we use, some minnows.

(04:42):
The biggest fish we had was twenty five and a half.
My brother Trent had that, but we had to we
had to do some search in it. Just they're still
in this transition because of this goofy low water. I've
ever seen it, Wally, So I don't know what's happening
in Madison, But well.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
The bass are still biting Madison.

Speaker 6 (04:59):
A few must these are being caught, and the walleye
should really perk up pretty soon.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
You know.

Speaker 6 (05:05):
In the fall, the female walleyes get eggsax on their
sides and something in their brain says, hey, we got
to start eating now. So we're just on the front
edge of the really good bite. Water temps around here
have been fifty two to fifty four degrees. When it
gets below fifty and starts dropping, that really triggers the
fall walleye.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah. Hey, here's a couple quick announcements. Big surprise, BRP
is selling Alumacraft. I don't know how this is going
to affect lumacraft owners, new production, whatever, but BRP is
selling Alumacraft. Another big one here, Wally motor Guide has
ceased operations on their trolling motors. They're now going to
be sold under the name Laurance or Simrad. Motor Guide

(05:48):
has been in business since nineteen forty seven. Coming up, Andrew,
Joe Gonna join us, John Ryan Hart going to join us.
Got a great show. Stay with us.

She's also a broker owner for Century twenty one affiliated
Andrea Joe. Welcome to the show.

Speaker 10 (08:42):
Hey, good morning Wally.

Speaker 5 (08:45):
Andrea.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
I know you're up north and you and your husband
John have had some fantastic hunting dogs.

Speaker 5 (08:50):
I heard you got a new one. What's his name?

Speaker 11 (08:53):
I did?

Speaker 10 (08:53):
I have a he's now four and a half months old,
black lab and his name is Onyx.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
And how is he doing at that age?

Speaker 10 (09:04):
He's doing really well. It's kind of funny. I forget
how much work a puppy is. They're cute, but there
are a lot of work. But we've been doing some
grouse hunting, a little bit of duck hunting, and we thought, well,
let's throw him into the mix. And he's been doing
really good so far. I take him out on my
own and and do some duck hunting with him, and

(09:26):
he sits pretty good. And when the ducks fall, he
goes and gets him and brings him back like he should.

Speaker 6 (09:31):
So wow, that's fantastic for a young dog. And how
is the duck hunting in northern Wisconsin?

Speaker 10 (09:40):
So we've been doing a little bit of wood duck
hunting and even gotten a couple of teal Up north,
it's a little bit different. We just kind of go
and find the potholes out in the timber and hunt
early morning for about about half an hour to an
hour and then and then it's kind of done from there.
And then we got out and grab all the dogs

(10:02):
and go gross of woodcock hunting.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Now, how has that been? I heard there's quite a
few grouse this year. Is it a pretty good season?

Speaker 10 (10:11):
Yeah, so far, it's been a great season. It's a
little challenging with all the leaves on the trees yet,
and the weather's been a little bit challenging with some
high winds and then rain, but we've done pretty cood.
We've had a lot of flushes, and I would say
we've harvested about probably a little over a dozen grouse

(10:32):
and a handful of woodcock.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
One.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
That's great to be out in the woods and walking
and seeing all the colors. It sounds like you and
John are heading to Alaska for an adventure. Where are
you planning to go and what are you going to
do up in Alaska?

Speaker 10 (10:47):
Yeah, so we're heading back to Alaska again. This time
we are. We're going to find the anchorage and from
there we're going to jump on a plane and go
to Saint Paul Island. We are after our king niders,
so we're excited to do that. That's been on our
our waterfowl list for a long time.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
So you've got to be avid duck hunter to go
all the way to Alaska for that.

Speaker 10 (11:12):
Yeah. Yeah, in December and January when it's like, you know,
really cold.

Speaker 6 (11:18):
And also, are you gonna hunt for the Arctic fox?
I saw a note on that.

Speaker 10 (11:23):
Yeah, so the target is obviously the king niers, but
when we go, once we get those, then we're going
to go and see if we can find smartic fox too.

Speaker 5 (11:33):
That'd be quite the adventure, Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
So being a realtor, you have some really cool properties
come up now and then for hunters. Most of our
listeners are hunters and fishermen. So do you have any
new hunting properties hitting the market?

Speaker 10 (11:50):
Yeah, actually I do. It's perfect timing for the hunting season.
I have sixty five acres coming up just on the
other side of Richland Center and it's all set up
for hunting. It's uh, it's got the trails, there's they're
going to leave three box lines, there's plenty of space.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
For food plots.

Speaker 10 (12:07):
They actually have a big fishing pond stocked with fish,
and then there is a spring pond that they have
stocked with rainbow trout too, and there's they have they
have a house on there as well. So it's kind
of everything you need on sixty five acres on a
dead end road. So I'm excited to have that for
the shunting season.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
A hundred of property near Boez that's got a lot
of deer out there.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
That's a good area. Is that close to this property?

Speaker 10 (12:34):
Yeah, this is just no north of boas So and yeah,
it's great deer hunting property up that way.

Speaker 5 (12:42):
Now, how's realty ben overall?

Speaker 6 (12:44):
Has there been a shortage of properties or now the
inventory increasing or how's that looking.

Speaker 10 (12:50):
Yeah, No, it's been it's been kind of slow with inventory.
It's picked up a little bit from what it was,
but it's still been slow. And hunting properties like this haven't.
We don't seen many of these come on the market.
Houses have been coming on, but just the hunting land.
Nobody really wants to give that up. So it's kind
of exciting to have a nice property like this to

(13:13):
advertise and move.

Speaker 6 (13:16):
Now, getting back to your dogs, I know that young
ones got a big future. You've got some other labs too,
don't you.

Speaker 8 (13:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (13:22):
So I have Timber, he's two and he we've been
hunting him quite a bit. He's he rocks out. He's
pretty fun, cool dog. And I still have my older dog, Yogi.
She's she's gonna turn twelve here, so we still get
her out and hunts a little bit. But she's kind
of on the edge of being retired here.

Speaker 5 (13:43):
Yogi's getting a little gray now around the edges.

Speaker 10 (13:46):
She's getting over gray.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (13:49):
Well, Andrea, thanks for taking time out and joining us, and.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
Good luck with those grouse and ducks up north.

Speaker 10 (13:56):
All right, Thank LOLLI okay Andrew Andrew, Yeah, yeah, is
my pigs still running around?

Speaker 2 (14:03):
Or to shoot it?

Speaker 10 (14:05):
No, he's still running around. He's got a couple of
weeks last.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Okay, fatten him up and give me a call. Yep,
we'll do all right. Thanks.

Speaker 6 (14:17):

and game. Everything you need up there, from shells to
decoys to waiters. They got a pretty good selection of everything. Hey,
join me, Dane Altman Outdoors Radio. We're going to talk
with an old river rat friend of the show, John Reinhardt.

(16:11):
John's always on at least once a year and we're
going to talk about how the bite's been on the
pretty much the whole Mississippi from peppin'on down to you.
Almost a praier of sheen and a little bit of
duck talk. Good morning, John, Good morning, Terry.

Speaker 15 (16:27):
How are you today?

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Good? Well, John, you and I have been chatting. We
chat quite a bit about the river, and you don't
live too far from the river. But this has probably been,
as you were mentioning, one of the best panfish bite
so far this year, especially with some of these fish
moving to wing dams and areas that you can target them.

Speaker 15 (16:50):
Yes. Absolutely, they've been on there for well a couple
three months now and it's still going strong. And and
once that water dropped, the fish really started to show
up on the dams.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
Well, and John, I don't think they're going to go
anywhere because we're the only thing that's going to move
those fish is a big flow of current. We need
to let people know that the flow has to get
to the correct flow for these bluegills to get out there.
But they've been out there just because the flow has
been lo How about your presentations, John, You're you're basically

(17:26):
anchoring up on the upper side of the dam. Is
that your presentation?

Speaker 15 (17:31):
Yes, I get pretty close to the dam within four
or five feet. The majority of the fish are usually
hanging right behind the wing dam, within you know, ten
twelve yards of the wing dam, and it just toss
a piece of crawler over or piece of plastic and

(17:52):
hang on because you'll get bit.

Speaker 7 (17:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
And that's a little bit different than walleyes because normally,
you know, we're probably thirty feet from that, but you're
you're getting tight and finding them on the backside, and
that's that's something a lot of people don't do. John,
fish the backs.

Speaker 15 (18:08):
Yeah, I know I don't see many people doing that
out there, but it sure works.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Yeah. And how about qualad. You mentioned that some of
the best quality you've seen two in years.

Speaker 15 (18:21):
Absolutely, they're the size of the fishes is really up
this year. You know, you'll catch a lot of fish,
and of course you catch some small ones too, but
I would say fifty to fifty it's going to be
a keeper when you toss out there.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Yeah. Yeah, and that bite should hold right into November
here if it stays warm weather dependent. John, let's chat
a little bit about ducks quick, because you're on a
on one of the best duck areas on the on
the Mississippi, and we were talking off air how you
like to Basically, when you do your research, you kind

(19:02):
of look for a lot of these summer spots where
some of the local ducks hatch. Is that what you do?

Speaker 15 (19:08):
Absolutely? And you know if it's a good place for them,
it's going to be a good place for the birds
that come down too.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
Yeah. And I know I've found, especially if you jump
those ducks up and you can see that there's a
bunch of young ones in there, it's almost a guarantee
that they're going to return to that spot within a
couple hours. Have you found that to John?

Speaker 15 (19:31):
Yes, And sometimes it doesn't even take two hours. You know,
you throw a couple of decoys out there, after you
jump the pile of ducks and get set up, they'll
be back.

Speaker 8 (19:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Yeah, and normally so John, the northern flights, all the weather,
you've got, you've got a key that kind of helps
you determine when the flight is going to happen. And
what is that? What do you look for, John?

Speaker 15 (19:57):
Well, the first of November is usually you know, within
a few days you're going to start seeing birds come down,
and once you see the swans come, then you have
a good indication that the birds are be on their way.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yeah. So basically, when you see the swan, start your truck,
tell your wife you'd be back in a couple.

Speaker 15 (20:18):
Of weeks, right, yeah, two, three weeks, whatever it takes. Yes.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Yeah, And you know, John, I've noticed you probably too.
The flight's been a little bit goofy the last couple
of years, and it's just because I think it's just
warm weather mixed in, don't you think.

Speaker 15 (20:36):
I believe that to be very true. Last year I noticed,
you know, toward the end of the season, I was
looking up in the sky and you were seeing birds
coming down, and the season was over and there were
flock after flock coming down.

Speaker 2 (20:53):
Yeah. Well, John, six minute goes quick, but we appreciate
you taking time to join us here in Ultimate Outdoor.
You have a great fall down there on the mighty
Mississippi River.

They need water, Wally Hey. On this week's UDA, we're
traveling to Minnesota where a former Reads employee Reads Sporting
Goods charge with stealing forty thousand dollars charged with racketeering
theft for allegedly allegedly using fraudulent gift cards to steal
more than forty thousand dollars worth of products from the

(24:16):
store somehow. Yeah, yeah, jesus, he was on quite a
buying spree. I would guess that would be a red
flag there, Wally.

Speaker 6 (24:25):
So it's crazy. And you know, most bigger stores have cameras.
You'd think they'd have them on camera, but that's that's crazy.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Well, if you if you walk out there with forty
thousand dollars worth of stuff, that's probably a red flag there.
So Jesus, Yeah, you're not in the hide business, Wally.

Speaker 6 (24:47):
No, it maybe cut one of his fingers off, or
a couple of them. That's what they do in other
countries when you're got stealing, They chop a finger off.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
Yeah. Time for our Spring Spring Valley Cantlefield Report, Wally,
which you got.

Speaker 6 (25:00):
Well, if you happen to be planning vacation or taking
off for a weekend or a week, or need a
great place to board your dog or dog, contact showner
Linda Timmins at the Spring Valley Kennel in Blue Mountains, Wisconsin.
They've got an awesome clean kennel there to exercise your dogs,
do some training with them while they're there, and they
even play them some country music.

Speaker 5 (25:20):
Captain.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Yeah, a couple of quick things Dork County Eyes with
Mike from Exclusive Walleye Guide. Give him a call his
trophy time, Wally, I've been I'm still following this Mountain
Lion band. I was invited to sit in on a
zoom call this past week. Basically with the zoom call
was with a group called Colorado's for Responsible Wildlife. There

(25:44):
was a Division of Wildlife employee Jeff Davis, DEO w
Commissioner Robinson, Senator Robert Senator Will and Colorado Department of
egg It was a zoom call to see where everyone's
at with this potential vote to shut down Mountain lion
hunting in two weeks. They had a big rally at

(26:04):
the Capitol. But as everyone is saying, this could impact
hunting in our nation if this passes, because the anti
hunters will get on board and they'll start doing it
in every state, whether it's deer, elk or whatever. If
you got the so called initiative in your state, they
can just do ballot box. So we're going to see.

(26:26):
It was a good zoom call. A lot of one
thing about this wally is which is different than before.
A group has got together, got key people in there
to fight this. Politicians, Divisional Wildlife involved, so it's good stuff.
Hopefully it's successful.

Speaker 6 (26:44):
So no kidding, that could really change the future if
they get away with these votes. You know, yep, so hey,
which reminds me make sure you vote and know who
you're voting for and how they stand in outdoor issues
including firearms, hunting seasons and things like that.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Captain absolutely other news, Wally, I see that the National
Professional Anglers Association Conference has moved back to the Dells.
That's January third or fourth. It is open to anyone,
a good place to check out new products, seminars, rub

(27:21):
elbows with some of the guys, good stuff, and you know,
they got a nice venue up there to have that.
So go to NPAA conference for all your information.

Speaker 6 (27:35):
And we've been going to that for years. And like
you mentioned, you rub elbows a lot of industry leaders
and we've interviewed folks like el Lender and Kevin van
Dam and Johnny Morris and met some really interesting people.
So if you want to increase your fishing career and
want to take a big step forward, join the National

(27:56):
Professional Anglers Association.

Speaker 2 (27:59):
Yeah, hey, folks, if you are looking for something to
do in this nice weather, I can tell you that
the a road trip on Highway thirty five up the
Mississippi River is always a highlight in the fall with
the colors on the bluffs turning and it is just
gorgeous in that bluff country. Plus the migration probably hasn't
started for thunder swans and ducks and so on. But

(28:22):
if you just cross the river across Lanceing go to
a little town called Brownsville, Minnesota. They have tour boats
that'll take you out. They'll probably be later this year
with this warm weather. But a road trip wall and
we always used to stop and get some smoke cart
but some of the little bars along the way, and
they're just some really cool towns for a weekend road trip.

Speaker 6 (28:44):
Yeah, there's that one fish market by Prayer to Shane
that always has great small fish of all kinds. I
forget the name, but Kate and I always go there.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
Yeah, and Gays Mills has their apple fest going on.
Always fun to go through the orchard there too. But otherwise,
upcoming ice Expo up in Osh Gosh. We'll be talking
about that in the next month, so stay tuned for that.
A lot of good guests has moved over to the
EAA field just because it was so big last year.
So get outside. Thanks for spending another Saturday morning with

(29:14):
the Ultimate Outdoors Radio crew.
