Speaker 3 (00:30):
You once again.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain and the
wall Doog.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Good Saturday morning. This is Wally the Walldog Bampy along
with Captain Terry Friday morning. Captain, Hey, good.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Morning, Walldog.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
It is the twenty twenty four deer season opener here
in Wisconsin, and some people who have been ball hunting
probably don't know if it's first, second week or whatever
because one runs in the other. But anyway, we are
going to talk a little bit of Wisconsin elk hunting
this week. We're gonna talk with Andy Ryan and Andy
is the father of Jordi. Jordy drew a Wisconsin elk
(01:11):
tag ten year old youngster and shot a great six
by six bowl here in Wisconsin. Good story coming up.
Then after Jorge or after Andy is Dan Durban, we're
gonna talk Wisconsin ice Ex Bowl and that is right
around the corner, folks, just you know, a month or
so off, not even so we're gonna find out what's
(01:33):
happening up in Osh Gosh. But otherwise, hope you are
enjoying the morning. If you've missed the big buck already, well, Wally,
and I feel your pain because it happens, So just
hang in there and wait for the next one.
Speaker 6 (01:49):
Yeah, it's the second week.
Speaker 7 (02:02):
Good deer camp.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
I got us falling head.
Speaker 8 (02:05):
I'm lying with the dust balls underneath my bed and
I see breeze is blowing and shrew a tongue and groove.
My pants are frozen through the floor and I'm too
sick to move.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
I didn't there you go, Wally, That's happening to a
few people in the Wisconsin because once in a while
there is a beer consumed.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Hey, time for our gearhead segment, folks, Now which time.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
For the Ultimate gear Heads. This week's gearhead segment is
followed by Middleton four Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey, before you start
spending all your money on outdoor gear, have the Ultimate
Gearheads check it out. They will set you straight.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton forward sticker. You
paid too much?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Remember there's you can still pop in there.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
They have all the vortex optics available through deer season.
Late Deer season laid our tree, laid everything, Wally.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Captain. This week's really cool piece of gear is a
gun case. Federal Ammunition has just announced the release of
four new gun cases. Two models fit shotguns and two
fit scoped rifles. What makes them unique is the insulation
in lining offers up to twelve pounds of floatation. All
models have quality zippers, lots of protective padding, and rugged
(03:25):
waterproof six hundred to near polyester construction. In Wisconsin, long
guns must be unloaded when in or on a vehicle,
but no longer need to be cased. We do recommend
using gun cases Captain whenever possible to protect your investment absolutely.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
Hey, Wally, a couple numbers here on where we're at
in Wisconsin's deer harvest. As of the middle of November,
I was actually down about ten percent between Bowl Cross
Bowl Youth Gun sixty two eight hundred white tails was harvested,
So it's down a little bit, but it could be weather,
(04:02):
might just be that hunters are a little choosier. But
we do want to tell people to, you know, be
aware of where your bullet travels, be aware of safety issues,
and be aware when you have youngsters out there. If
they're freezing to death. Take them and warm them up.
Give them a good experience, Wally. That is the important thing,
a good experience.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Well, there's plenty of deer to be had, and I
think you nailed it. The weather is a big factor
this year. It was so rainy, windy, warm. The deer
were very nocturnal. People weren't seeing a lot of big
bucks during the day, but they're active on camera at night.
But I think what that leads to is a lot
of extra big bucks for the gun opener this year
(04:43):
in Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
I think this cold snap, Wally, I've seen it where
that we did have a cold night or two, the
deer movement had really increased.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Here's a quick tip you guys.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
You know most of us carry grunt calls and bleak
calls for archery season, but I've actually used them dir
gun season.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Uh. If you know, if you're trying to pull.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
A buck maybe out of the brush and you're just
stumped on what to do, never hurts to have that
bleak call grunt call in your pocket because sometimes it
can make the difference. Because, as you know, Wally, there's
still gonna be a few bucks chasing doles come opening morning.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
That's a really good tip, Captain. I carry one. Also,
if that deer's you know, in sight and then disappears
for a minute, sometimes you can get him back. So
I wouldn't just go calling blindly. But like you just said,
if they're in heavy brush and you want to turn them,
a grunt call works.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
How about Hey dumb as, could you come back here?
Please take that work well? Coming up, we're going to
talk with Andy Ryan on his son's Wisconsin l hunt,
his harvest of a six by six bull. Following him
Dan Durban with the Wisconsin Ice Ex Bowl in Oshkosh
coming up in December.
Speaker 9 (05:59):

is brought to you by Middleton Ford for a great deal,
great service, and a great shopping experience. Shop at Middleton Ford.
If you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker on the
back of that car truck, yeah, paid too much. Joining
us next is one proud father. His ten year old
son Jordie, was able to harvest a big Wisconsin bull
(08:20):
elk on his first ever big game hunting adventure. Andy
Ryan from Barneville, Welcome to the show. Oh, good morning, Andy.
To get started, tell us about the phone call you
received from DNR Weldlife biologist Joshua Spiegel.
Speaker 12 (08:33):
Well, Josh loves to tell the story about it because
I didn't keep it very PG. I guess I was
back in June. I was at work one morning and
I just I had a miscall on my phone and
with a voicemail and assumed it was somebody talking about
my car warranty or something. But I checked it and
they said this. It was very vague, said, this is Josh.
(08:54):
I'm calling from the Wisconsin DNR and like you to
give me a call back. Okay, that's kind of odd,
but whatever. I called him back, and it was he
just kind of tiptoed around a little bit and he's like, well,
I'm I'm actually with the Wisconsin Elk biologist. I might
obviously my heart kind of saying, and I was like,
are you kidding me? You know, like did I draw
(09:16):
a tag? And he giggled and he's like, no, no,
you did not draw a tag. And I'm like, okay.
He's like, but if your son's name is Jordie, he
drew a tag and I yeah, said some naughty words
and I was like, you've got to be deep and
he beep and kidding me and yeah, and he kind
of led me through the whole process and he's like,
(09:36):
I know this is gonna be a lot of information
to absorb right now, and your heart's probably racing and
your head's probably spinning, and yeah, you're not wrong there.
So yeah, so that was how we got started.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
So when you realize your son had a chance of
a lifetime, what came next a.
Speaker 12 (09:52):
Lot of practice. I mean he's obviously you know ten,
he's we're just starting to introduce him into hunting and
twenty two shooting and stuff like that. This past spring
he did get a turkey and the Youth Turkey Hunt,
and it was basically like, well, now we uh need
(10:15):
to jump into the big leagues and get him actually shooting,
a lot of practice, a lot of practice, a lot
of different types of ammo. You know, just uh started
you know, small seventeen hm R two twenty three kind
of built up a little bit until we got to
he borrowed his older brother was nice enough to let
(10:36):
him borrow his three oh eight. So he's not a
he's not a big kid like at all. He's kind
of a runt. So he basically had to take it
was a Ruler American three eight, and we basically took
the stock off it and bought a completely like customizable
adjustable Boyd's at one to get it, you know, so
(10:57):
it would fit his smaller frame, and a lot of
people around us reached out to help, you know, whether
it be. We had some friends that let us put
up some steel plates and some different targets, you know,
paper targets and stuff like that, and I wound up
actually buying a life sized vinyl target of a full
(11:19):
size elk that we were able to put up. And
last one of last year's winners, Brian Wink, he reached
out and he worked with who does a lot of
long range, professional type shooting. He took us up to
Winnaqua Gun Club and Lodi on one of their league nights,
and a lot of the members were there and they
(11:42):
they worked with him, you know, and game pointers and
practice practice, practice. We enrolled in the other's program out
at Vortex out in Barneveldt. They do youth intro to shooting,
so we took him out there and got him signed
up for that. We did hunter safety, just a lot
(12:05):
of a lot of practice.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
So we've got about a minute left. Just take us
out in the field. Monday in Sawyer County, when Jordi
had made a great shot on a big Yuk.
Speaker 12 (12:15):
Well We walked out there on Monday morning. You know,
we didn't want to get in there too early, so
we could because we there was kind of a big
food plot and the bull was standing out there and
I thought, you know, with actually with Jordie's inexperience with hunting,
that he the nerves wouldn't necessarily get to him so bad.
But I could not have been more wrong. He you know,
(12:36):
we put the gun on a blog death grip, death
gript tripod and had him standing there on the ball
waiting for his turn broadside, and he was basically hyper ventilating.
So step one was get him calmed down, Calm down,
you know you you practice, you practice, you know what
you're doing. You can do this, and uh, turn broadside,
turned away, turn broadside, turned away, turn broadside a third
(12:59):
time and then he started crying and said he didn't
know if he could do it. And then there was
a lot of you know, shoulder squeeze and back rub
and like, calm down, buddy, you know, positive, positive, positive,
and honestly got me. And we had a guide, Jake
Nelson with Flambeau for a self fitters. We kind of
almost gave.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
Up hope and.
Speaker 12 (13:20):
Bang he did it and right through both lungs.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Fantastic. Andy. I'm sorry we got to go, but thanks
so much for sharing your story and tell Jordy congratulations.
Speaker 13 (13:33):
I will do that.
Speaker 12 (13:33):
Thank you for your time.
Speaker 4 (13:35):

will be right there.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
It's awesomeate out to ours radio.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
Well, folks, almost ice fishing time. Actually, we're going to
talk a little bit of ice fishing. Dan Durbin is
the co owner for the upcoming Wisconsin Ice ex Bowl
December thirteenth through the fifteenth. Before I bring Dan on,
I want to mention we always got to mention the
sponsors because these shows do not happen without them. Actme
(15:32):
Tackle Beaver Dam. The ion team in Wisconsin Fishing Association,
Outdoor News NPAA, n Eskimo. Thanks for the sponsors for
helping with the show.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Good morning, Dan, good morning.
Speaker 16 (15:49):
Thanks for giving our sponsors some props there too.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
Appreciate that well, Dan, you know, none of us get
very far without sponsorships, would we.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
So Dan, let's touch You moved the event from last year?
Speaker 7 (16:00):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Where? What? When? Where? And all that good stuff for
the upcoming ice ex Bow. Yeah, we did.
Speaker 16 (16:06):
We moved it up to the EA grounds. We we
grossly underestimated how many people would come because there hasn't
been a nice show in Wisconsin for almost eight years,
and nothing has been you know on you know, next
to the bagel factory, Walleye Deal and in that Fox
Valley area, they've never had one. And we were hoping
(16:28):
for five thousand, and we put twelve thousand through the door,
and it just was too much for that facility, and
so we we sort of had to move. And we're
happy we did because I mean, EAA, they put what
eight hundred thousand people through that thing in ten days,
and you know up to twenty five thirty thousand a
(16:51):
day sometimes or more, and so it's going to be
a much smoother process. We do have shuttles running, two
shuttles running NonStop, you know, picking people up, dropping them off.
Very easy access in terms of getting on off the
freeway into the queue of VAA and plenty of ticket
counters and uh more, I mean the amount of exhibitors
(17:14):
that that we you know, we almost doubled in size,
and you know, our first year, I think there were
a few brands that you know, kind of pump the
brakes and like, well, let's see how this thing goes.
And now they're all here. I mean, we have a
wave a waiting list to get in. We're absolutely packed,
and we have every major brand and and all the
(17:35):
cool stuff that you can't get at the big box
stores too.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
So yeah, and besides that, Dan, being at the EAA,
you will probably match attendance with the EAA show eventually,
I would guess.
Speaker 16 (17:46):
So well, yeah, sure, yeah, I'll start ratio show the
neat thing.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
Dan.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
People could actually fly into the show, now, is that right?
Speaker 16 (17:56):
They actually can if they want. Maybe there'll be some
big shots from Pure Fishing or somebody's swooping in the seat.
Speaker 5 (18:03):
Dan, let's talk tickets, I see, you can just pick
them up online. That would be my suggestion you can
pick everything up there, parking passes so on, you know,
for to get into the show.
Speaker 16 (18:14):
Yeah, I mean, the only thing is there is a
I can't honestly, I can't remember. It's the buck fifty
or two dollars fee that the ticketing service charges. We
don't up charge it. That's just straight cost to us
for doing that. So if you wanted the cheapest way possible,
ten bucks at the door, eight bucks, if your military vetter,
first responders kids twelve hundred are free. So I guess
(18:37):
it's up to the person it. Honestly, it's going to
be so smooth and so fast. I mean, just like
our Madison show. I'd say ninety five percent, and people
pay at the door. I don't know if it's just
Darting demographic or what, but so yeah, you can do
it either way.
Speaker 5 (18:53):
Good hey, and I see you as some great lodging
prices ninety two ninety nine dollars for people that might
just want to stay over.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Check those out, folks. Hey, uh got a couple of.
Speaker 5 (19:03):
Minutes, Dan seminar speakers, I see you got kids seminars,
Tom Bowley, Larry Smith, anyone else you want to comment
on there.
Speaker 16 (19:12):
Yeah, I mean we got i'd see, it's a class
of its own. I don't think there's any other show
in the country that has as many or the variety
of seminars we have. You know, we get guys speaking
on Winnebagover, but you know, we got your local gym Casua,
he's doing Shallow one of the Gills, and Ericatia Pike,
I mean yeah, and the kid's stuff. They're giving away
free combos. That's the Greg Kartsteel is always awesome.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
Yep.
Speaker 16 (19:36):
And we get Barb and Clam and you know that
the one that I'm probably most excited to see is
Larry Smith's thirty three years of Guiding Tales. It's not
it's not a how to aware to her tactic, but
you know that Cat's got some stories that will just
make it.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Yeah, I would say, I would say, just go to
the website for all of them. Just got a minute left, Dan,
let's us touch. You've got a ton of exhibitor boosts
and this is where people can go and rub elbows
with the tech people, whether it's lithium batteries, I see amps,
they're a ton of tech people to talk with.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Got about the forty five seconds.
Speaker 16 (20:14):
Dan, Yeah, there's a ton I mean, guys from Garman
and Thorn Brothers. And we've got vendors that are specifically
coming to taking into you know, into how this stuff
works forward facing and all that. And yeah, over one
hundred and seventy vendors, so we were pretty much double
last year.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
How about a website for more info that people can
still so people can get into the show.
Speaker 16 (20:38):
Yeah, it's easy. It's just icefishexpo dot com. That's icefishexpo
dot com. And they can get all the intel there
and awesome food trucks too to come come hungry.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
Yep. Well, have a great show, Thanks Dan, Thank you.
We'll hopefully see you there. Yeah. Remember catch us live
world wide on iHeartRadio.

Captain Hey, on this week, Uda, we're traveling to the
state of Virginia. I don't think we've been there much.
Two men were sentenced with fines, jail time, suspension of
hunting privileges and poaching three white tails, including the infamous
Hollywood Cemetery buck, which I have not heard of. But
he basically killed this buck which everyone knew about. I
(24:11):
don't know if they couldn't shoot him because he was
in the local cemetery or what. But the guy, though,
for one guy pled guilty to twenty wildlife charges. They
whacked him kind of bad. Six months in jail, fines
totaling twenty five hundred. But here's the big one. Replacement
cost was eleven thousand for shooting the Hollywood buck, and
(24:32):
he also lost his hunting privileges for one hundred years,
though seventy six of those years were suspended. So basically
twenty four years of hunting suspension. Hats off to Virginia.
His buddy got thirty days of house arrest, twelve fifty
in fines, and a hunting band for six years. Good
to see these states stepping up wally and getting these
(24:55):
guys out of the outdoors with suspensions.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
Good deal.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Wow, no doubt. Hey, it's time now for our Dakota
Sunset Resort. The duck hunting had been really wonderful out there.
Took a while to get some ducks moving, but later
on out there in North Dakota has been really good.
So I got a little mention here from Ducks Unlimited
magazine I read November December issue. It says, if life
(25:20):
is a game of inches, then du is doing everything
at ken every single day to turn inches into acres
inch by inch, acre by acre, we make a difference.
In the past fiscal year alone, the impact exceeded over
one million acres of property, four years faster than the
goal and our strategic plan. The mission compelled over seven
hundred and fifteen thousand people to be part of the
(25:42):
Ducks Unlimited organization, and their outstanding fundraising efforts hit new
limits and with over two thirds on the way to
their goal of conservation for this continent, the largest conservation
campaign ever attempted. Inches became acres became dollars, and they
dedicate eighty three cents of every dollar when you joined
(26:05):
ducks emitted to their mission. So Captain has been a
huge success and they're a very good organization.
Speaker 5 (26:11):
Well on all nonprofits, Hats off to them, Elk Foundation,
Pheasants Forever, Mule Deer Foundation. Hey, while I was letting
people know that The Outdoor News has a fantastic best
buck photo contest and basically you just have to send
your photo in. They're giving away a muzzle loader, a Disruptor.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Pro twenty four compound bowl.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
They're giving away boots, cameras, knives, cents, So you just
have to send your pick in to the Outdoor News guys.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
Good deal.
Speaker 4 (26:48):
Yeah. I love the Wisconsin Outdoor News. Those guys do
a great job. My sister Peggy, who happens to be
from California, gets it for me every year and I
love reading each issue. They really cover some great stories
and they have collars and cuffs and all kinds of
neat stuff to read in there.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
Hey, quick Wolf mentioned there was a viral video of
a wolf that killed the deer at a logging site.
So I mean the wolves are not scared of anything anymore.
So basically the Interior Department has hired a national mediator
to try and mediate this wolf management debate, which something
(27:28):
has to happen, something has.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
To be managed. All predators need to be bannaged.
Speaker 5 (27:33):
So at some point maybe we'll get a breakthrough where
we can get back to managing these wolves and they
won't take your pet off the doorstep. Wally, Wally, Hey,
the NPA conference is coming up. Wally, back to Wisconsin again.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
Now that stands for National Professional Anglers Association. If you
want to increase your awareness in the fishing industry and
maybe get some sponsorship and work with some pro join
the NPAA. Terry and I have been members for many years.
It's a very well run organization. Folks like l Linder
and others are members.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
Captain that's going to be in the Dells January third
and fourth, So you can just go on National Professional
Anglers and register. A little invasive cart news not good
for Wisconsin. The DNR announced that silver carp and invasive
species have been detected in the Chippewa River, the Lower
Black River which feeds to the Mississippi. So, Wally, I
(28:33):
don't it just seems like we're kind of losing, losing
the fight against these because I know that they've been
harvesting a few out of the Mississippi. So it says
here a couple were captured above Winona. So I don't
know how we're going to fight these things, and maybe
you just have to try and harvest them and shock
(28:56):
them and turn them into cat and dog food. Remember
we met cat and dog food. Hey, I hope you're
having a safe, dear season. Thanks for spending another Saturday
morning with the ultimate outdoors radio crew.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
That's just worldwide on iHeartRadio. Good Luck Hunting.
