Speaker 2 (00:05):
You guys just keep being you an iHeartRadio station.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Want a quest to bring the outdoors to you once again.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Our resident guides to the outdoors, the Captain and the
Wall Dog.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
Good Saturday morning, Thanks for joining us. This is Wally
the Wall Dog BAMFI along with Captain Terry Fry.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Good morning, Captain, Hey, good morning everyone. I suppose a
few of you are probably standing in your tree again.
Speaker 6 (00:54):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
For ones that did not get a deer, I want
to mention if you do get a deer lode I
Ostage Kitchen and Meat Market you can take your scraps,
you can take your full deer head on over there
and they will process everything. Well. Coming up, we're you know,
we're really getting into this upcoming ice Expo, so we're
gonna talk a little bit about that today. Larry Smith
(01:17):
is going to join us from Larry Smith TV host
from Larry Smith Outdoors. He's going to be a seminar
speaker also at the upcoming ice Expo in Osh Gosh
next month. And then Bob Allen is also going to
be at the Ice ex Boll Bob is a kid's
book author, fantastic writer, does a lot of kids books,
(01:39):
and if you don't get there, you really need to
check him out online and order a few of his
books because he's got rave reviews, he's got some of
the fish named and all sorts of good stuff. So
he's gonna be an ice Expo exhibitor. Also. Otherwise, every
week we get to talk about gear.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Head. This week's
gearhead segment, it's followed by Middleton Ford, Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate Gearheads check it out.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
They will set you straight. Hey, folks, you don't see
that middleton Ford sticker, you paid too much. And also
Middleton Ford is now offering ice rods, I believe. I
don't know. I haven't got in there to check them
out yet, but I know they have some in stock.
Wally Yep.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
This week's really a cool piece of gear is made
by Fraybill. It's the ice Hub HQ one hundred. This lightweight,
portable pop up ice shelter is black, yellow and gray
and it folds up into a carry bag, making it
very easy to transport. The HQ one hundred hub sets
up quickly. It has strategically placed windows and vents and
(02:52):
works great for one person, catch more fish through the
ice this winter and stay warm and comfortable in a
frable ice hub HQ one captain. The unit sells for
a brown two hundred bucks, so everyone can afford one of.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Those, Wally, how many of those big hubs you sold?
Like six of those giant party hubs up at the
ice ex Bowl. They were going like hotcakes.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
And about twenty of the smaller clams. And the ice
show is really crazy. They were expecting five thousand people
last year and they had over twelve thousand captains. So
with this year's show in a much bigger facility, they
have one hundred and seventy vendors and you'll see every
ice shelter probably ever invented.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, we'll talk with Dan about that. Otherwise, folks, if
you need some ice stuff Wilderness fish and game, or
if you need to buy your wife a gun before
season runs out, that's a good excuse, Wally, I bought
this for you, Honny. Wilderness has a good supply, Plus
their gunsmith is on hand for repairs and shells and
(03:55):
you know, probably some handwarmers, and Wally might even be working.
He might be working up at wilderness.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
So although I may be up north in a box
blne sipping some hot coffee and looking for that big
elusive buck.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, well we all know what you put in your coffee.
So but otherwise, yeah, a couple little segments, I'm as
we tell this wild story before we get out of here.
Wally anglers made an unexpected catch on the Mississippi Lake
thirty eight hounds. Now this is in missis state of Mississippi.
Thirty eight hounds had chased a deer a half mile
into the water because they were chasing the wrong species
(04:31):
while they're supposed to be chasing a fox, and the
poor deer was out there treading water. The hounds were
on a fox hunt, but the hunters didn't have a boat.
The anglers ferried twenty seven dogs back to shore in
their first loaded, returned for the remaining eleven dogs, so
they probably would have died. That didn't say where they
got a boat, but bizarro, the dogs decided let's chase
(04:54):
this deer instead of a fox.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
So wow, that's a lot of dogs to turn loose.
Thirty eight of them. Holy snikes.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
But you know down in those states, that's big stuff.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
So what else you got, Wally, Well, let's see. Hopefully
we're going to have some ice this year. We had
a short year last year, so we hope it's going
to get real cold December January. And recommend everyone really
be safe on the ice. You know, takes three to
five inches to support one person, and if you've got
a group of people, you know, you want to have
(05:25):
six to ten inches. And if you're taking machines on
the ice, you better have twelve to fifteen inches of ice.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Yeah. Hey, well the other day somehow we got in
the subject of eels and I didn't realize it, but
if you catch an American eel, you should handle it
with care. And I don't know if you can get
them through the ice, but open water we do get
them once in a while. Actually, American eels are nocturnal
and they're listed as a special concern up in Minnesota.
(05:52):
They're very rare, so it's really declined, so kind of
interesting we catch them in the summer. But well, thanks
for spend on a Saturday morning with the ultimateall doors Radioco.
Remember to have a safe muzzleoder season coming up and
send us your picks.
Speaker 2 (06:10):

next is a great outdoorsman. Larry has fished, hunted, and
spent time outdoors all over North America. Larry has a
terrific year round television show called Larry Smith Outdoors. Larry
(08:27):
is also a fishing guide for both open water and
hardwater fishing. He also is a featured seminar speaker and
fishing educator at sports shows all over the Midwest. Larry Smith,
Welcome to the show.
Speaker 6 (08:38):
Hey, Wally, how are you doing today?
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Doing great? Larry?
Speaker 5 (08:41):
How's your TV show going? And where have you filmed lately?
Speaker 6 (08:44):
Well, I'll tell you what. We've been traveling all over
the place. We were just up in the up and
we were doing something pretty unique.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
You know.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
The cool part about like what we do is we
filmed fifty two new shows a year just for network alone,
and then probably another twenty shows we filmed for for
everything else that we do here. And so you know,
you're always trying to be diverse on what you're doing,
and really you don't want your audience to anything to
get stale. So definitely keeping things moving is a big thing.
(09:14):
We were up filming with some commercial fishermen last week.
On whitefish, and boy, that was really an interesting thing.
It's cool to see the other side how people spend
the you know, these guys make their living off off
of the outdoors too, by the part, you know, very cool.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
Also, I just watched the show last night where you
were on Green Bay with Jeff van Rimmortal and that
was fantastic and you boted a fifty four inch green
Bay monster all on film. Tell us a little bit.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
Yeah, that was that was very cool. That was actually
my personal best musket of all times. I've had clients
get them that big, but that was my fish. And
I'll tell you it was an interesting deal because we
had three days in the cast and that was the
first bite I actually got. Now is towards the end
of the third day.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
That's all muskie fishing is. You just got to keep grinding,
as you guys were saying, and you keep casting hoping
for that one bite and to get a fifty four incher. Congratulations,
that's awesome.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
Yeah, I appreciate that for sure. So yeah, no lots
of good things coming up all the time.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
You know.
Speaker 6 (10:19):
Today I'm actually out duck hunting right now and enjoying
a little bit of time with my dog here. And
you know that's the cool part when you have the
passion and the love which we're so lucky in this
country to have the resources and have the things that
we have here to be able to do all these things.
And you know, each week on our show we always
(10:40):
give gratitude and thanks to all of our military men
and women of course, with all the firefighters, paramedics and
and all of our law enforcement agents. You know, that's
the big part about the outdoors. I think that people
really need to grasp onto when you're lucky enough to
be able to enjoy this what we have here, is
that there's a big reason and why we have all
(11:01):
these things, and a lot of people have fought really
hard for this country to give us these opportunities that
we're able to have.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Wally, we are.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Very lucky to be Americans and Larry, you will be
a featured seminar speaker at the twenty twenty four Wisconsin
Ice Fishing Expo, which would be held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
at the EAA Center. It's December thirteen, fourteen fifteen. Do
you have your topics picked out?
Speaker 6 (11:24):
Yeah, this is going to be I've got a couple
we're going to be doing some topics. Our top ones
are going to be basically fishing to win a bago
system and kind of talking about how things have changed
out there over the last ten years. You know, that
system used to be a really you know, a murky,
dirty body of water. Now with the zebra muscles, it's
(11:46):
really changed and it's such a clear body water and
we have weed growth all over the place. And to me,
I think it really is more enjoyable now because it's
really changed the system and there seems to be a
lot lot more panfish out there on all species, croppies, perch, gills,
and it also really is the helps out the walleye population,
(12:09):
so now all this young of the year has a
place to actually go and hide. So that'll be one
of the seminars. I'm also gonna basically talk about some
of the experiences over the last thirty three years I've
had with clients, and that's a very interesting I've got
a lot of very interesting stories because I've guided a
lot of people from all walks of life and they've
(12:32):
all been good.
Speaker 10 (12:33):
You know.
Speaker 6 (12:33):
That's the part I love about my job is that
you know what the people that you deal with in
the outdoors. I'm not saying that sometimes people don't go
through things, because we all do. But the people in
the outdoors really appreciate and again it goes back to
the things in this country and they appreciate life in general. Walling.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
Yeah, it's great to be guiding folks and they're just
enjoying their day. And if somebody would like to hire
you for an ice fishing adventure or open world how
can people reach you, Larry?
Speaker 6 (13:02):
They can just go to our website Wallly and go
to Larrysmith Outdoors at gmail dot com and get a
hold of us. We're basically guiding seven days a week
out on the Winnebagos system itself. We provide pretty much everything.
The only thing they need to do is bring something
to eat and drink, and of course everybody's got to
have a license that is with an age, and we
(13:23):
basically just really make take everything. You don't have to
worry about transportation out on the lake or back, you
don't have to worry about bringing any gear. We have
all permanent checks that we can move people around really
easily in and it just makes it a very enjoyable
day and a very enjoyable experience.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
Well, Larry, thanks for taking time out and joining us.
I'll see you up at that ice fishing show.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
That sounds good. Will you remember, like I always say,
it's a great day to be alive and keep things moving.
Speaker 5 (13:54):

be right back.

Hey folks, remember Vortex Optics has fall classes you can
sign up for. Check those out great classes to attend
for firearm training. Well, join me today in Ultimate Outdoors Radio.
Fellow named Bob Allen. I had a chance to meet
at some of the outdoor shows and Bob is the
author of many kids outdoors and fishing books, so we
wanted to have him on board because he is going
(15:52):
to be attending the Wisconsin Ice Ex Bowl early December.
He attends a lot of shows. Goodmr and Bob, Good morning,
Well Bob, good to have you back on. I think
it's been a year or so. We'll talk about your
new book coming out. But I'm kind of curious. How
did you get into writing kids' books and how long
(16:13):
you been at it. Did your wife just say you
had to figure out some way to get me some
income or what.
Speaker 7 (16:20):
No, I've been at it about six years. I've had
a new book each year. So my last book, The
Panfish Party, is my sixth book. I got started in that.
I'm long retired and my wife says, you need a project. Yeah, yeah, Well,
well I wrote a little bit in high school and
she said, well, you got to write about something, you know.
And I said, well, I coached hockey for thirty five years,
(16:43):
but I've been fishing for seventy years, so I'm going
to write about fishing.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
So well, and you know, Bob, you attend, Well, I
should ask you how many shows do you do a
year as far as selling your books at outdoor shows.
Speaker 7 (16:55):
I probably do between ten and fifteen shows.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Yeah, and remind folks said you can either pick up
his book and a show, or you can contact him directly. Well, Bob,
let's talk about the new book coming out, and is
this book called the Panfish Party?
Speaker 7 (17:12):
It is perch, Crappie, and Google are having a party
and you're invited. So my previous books I'd written about walleyes,
muskies and bass, and so I thought, well, that's enough
of that. But my retail account said no, no, no, you
guys do another one. I said, well, if I did
another book, what should it be about? And they said, well, panfish,
(17:33):
because pantfish is really the most popular fish that kids
go after. It's experienced trying to catch a panfish is
probably their first panfish experiences, the first time the gone fishing,
and they're plentiful and they're willing to bite. So it's
a good place to start.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
You know, Bob, you talk about that, and the more
and more older folks I meet fishing, it's funny how
they can be a walleye fisherman, a bass fisherman, and
as they they get older, they kind of turned back
to chasing panfish. I don't know if it's just less
pressure or just kind of you know, they like to
eat panfish or what it is.
Speaker 7 (18:10):
Yeah, it can be you know, they moved from the
competitiveness of fishing to the contemplative Just relax and have
a good time. Catch a few fish, sometimes for the
pant I mean, my favorite fish to eater are perch.
But just to be out there with your grandson or son,
catch it a few pantfish. It's a delightful way to
spend a day.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Yeah. So, folks that might be attending the Wisconsin Ice
Ex Bowl in December up at the EAA grounds, what
can what will you have at your booth, Bob, And
what can they what can they expect to see and purchase?
Speaker 7 (18:45):
Well, I've got all so many books will be available there,
and I also include some little plush fish. A lot
of times the kids like to have a little plush
fish with the book, and so we have some panfish
and muskie and in a bass as far as plush
to go along with the books. But certainly we have
all six of the books there, and we offer a
(19:07):
little discount at the show so they don't have to
pay full retail for them. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
And the one thing about your books the pictures, and
you know what kind of I call it hooks kids
with just the way you produce the book with the
really cool pictures. We've got a minute and a half. Also,
you have we want to touch on this Walter, the
Willie Wiley Walleye, Monica, the Muskie, Larry and Lily Largemouth
(19:33):
and Sam and Sarah Smallma. They're going to be at
the show too, Huh.
Speaker 7 (19:37):
They'll all be there. Wiley Walleye. That was the first book,
and it's become the most popular, and it's then it's
seventh printing now, and so I'm really proud of that.
And every one of my books has won awards. So
I've selected three good illustrators and along with the books itself,
they've won some awards for the pictures and illustrations in them.
(20:00):
Real happy about that.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Yeah, And I know when you and I talked, we
got about a minute left. Bob. You have been basically
recommended and just by so many professionals that have looked
at your books, approved of your books. People in the
fishing industry and other industries, so very highly spoken of
in the in the kid's book business. The Ice Expo
(20:25):
is December thirteenth through the fifteenth EAA location. If folks
aren't there, Bob, where else can they find your books?
Speaker 7 (20:33):
Well, in the Madison area, I'm at the Lake City
Books and on the west side of town the dorn
Pro Shop. But they can always just they can go
to Amazon, or they can go to my website Bob
Allenbooks dot com and pick up books there and everything
I put out there in retail. And when I send
him out for my website, I personally sign them for
(20:54):
getting a signed book.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
Okay, great, all right, well Bob, thanks for to in
a minute, and you have a good show, a good fall,
good winner, and we'll see you soon. Folks, stay with us.

Captain Wally, on this week's DA I thought i'd bring
this story back only because uh, the fella involved in it,
Robert F. Kennedy Junior, who's now going to be charge
of in charge of our whole healthcare system evidently. But
this story actually happened about a decade ago and kind
(24:11):
of broke two months ago. What happened is Robert Kennedy
driving down the road and a woman in front of
him hit a bear and killed it. For some reason.
RFK took the bear cub and put it in New
York City Central Park. So that's all I can say.
(24:32):
I don't I don't know why, I don't know how
he got caught. But this was about a decade ago.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
Hey, Captain, that's some weird stuff going on there. Who
knows what was RFK was thinking at the time, What
else is happening out in the outdoors.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Well, Wally, I've got another bizarre story. I mean it's
probably well, we should hope everyone's having a good deer season.
Take your meet up to Lodi Sausage Kitchen. They'll take care.
But here's another Bazarro story. It's good time for bizarre stories.
California police officer found a man with a dead lion
(25:07):
on the hood of his jeep in a campground. The
man told the CPD officer he was sitting outside with
his dog the previous night when a mountain lion approached.
The lion got too close, the guy grabbed a shovel,
hit him over the head and killed it.
Speaker 5 (25:26):
Lucky the mountain lion didn't kill him.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
Maybe he should get the Man of the Year award. Well, anyway,
he threw it on his vehicle, which is kind of funny.
So he claimed self defense, but they said, well, you
don't have any scratch marks on you, so it's really
not self defense. So I don't know how this is
going to play out. But actually, I mean, mountain lion
(25:51):
attacks are rare. California has recorded twenty five lion attacks
since nineteen ninety on humans. Well, five too many for me.
That's why that ban in Colorado, Wally. If the band
goes through and you have overpopulation of mountain lions, let's
face it, the dog and the kiddie is going to
become mountain lion food. So YadA, YadA.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
The other thing I'm noting with cats is Wisconsin has
a lot of bobcats now. People have them all over
on their cameras and they like to kill stuff too,
So yeah, you got to kind of keep these in check,
you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Yeah, well, I got another wild story as long as
we're closing out the holiday deer hunt. Over in Sweden,
there's a lot of controversy because there was a brown
bear season. They killed more than one hundred and fifty
brown bears. That's a lot of bears they killed in
the opening days of Sweden's annual bear hunt. Well, there's
(26:50):
a lot of controversy with conservationists. They call it a
pure slaughter. They issued four hundred and eighty six licenses.
But man, that's a that's a lot of bear wally.
I mean, they're basically trying to cull these things down
because these bears are a little bit aggressive too. They
don't mind coming and knocking on your door and so on.
(27:12):
So we'll see where that goes. But I think they're
going to have a fight in there on their hands.
But that's a lot of bear to kill in a
few days, so there must be a good population.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
You know. A lot of times bears, like up in
northern Wisconsin, they like bird food, so come and knock
down your bird feeders and then once they get comfortable
with that, they start to come in your garage Captain
and rummage around and look for dog food and other
things to eat.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Yeah, and I'm gonna mention this again just because it's important.
Deer hunters, you know, provide nearly five hundred million meals
to people Family Food Bank so on almost six hundred
million pounds of deer harvested, so wally, that saves a
lot of insurance claims, feeds a lot of people. So
(28:01):
maybe like we do, the veterans, pat the hunter on
the back and maybe become involved. I mean like Vortex
Edge up there or Vortex Great sponsor. They have a
ton of classes to introduce people into hunting. They got
a great underground shooting facility. There's a place to kind
of start if you are interested. But we appreciate you
(28:22):
spending another Saturday morning with the Ultimate Outdoors Radio crew.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
And also, Captain, we've got a great saying here that is,
get those dogs off the couch. So if you're looking
for a great activity, try some pheasant hunting. At Cedar
Valley Hunting Preserve and Spring Green, Wisconsin. Call ahead for
a field or if you have a neighbor or somebody
who's a member. What a great idea to get out
and get some exercise for your dog.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
Yeah, have a good season. See you
