Wall Dog.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Good Saturday Morning.

Terry Friday Morning, Captain.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
Mar Waldog Marn Everyone out there in the outdoor world,
whether you're standing in a tree, or fishing in a boat,
or just having coffee, or maybe you're having a bloody
Mary right Wally.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Hey, they're great in the morning, aren't they. Yeah, great
way to start a day.

Speaker 6 (01:05):
Hey.

Speaker 7 (01:05):
On this week's show, can you believe we're going to
talk about Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo and that is actually
coming up in December thirteenth and the fifteenth up at
the EAA Ground in Oshkosh. We're going to talk with
Don Kirby. This was their second one. They launched the
first one last year, but the place was so packed

(01:25):
they had to move to the EAA ground in Oshkosh.
So Donald fill us in on what's happening there, and
I know people are probably thinking ice with the attempts
we had the past week here and the rain was
really nice, but it's good for heating fuel of nothing else.
And then we're going to talk winter care for lithium

(01:48):
batteries with Matt Lardinas from AMT Batteries. Matt's going to
educate us no matter what kind of lithium battery you got,
what to do for winter care, and then we're going
to talk about what product he offers. He's a Wisconsin company,
so that's nice to have someone local, and I'm guessing
you can probably learn something because lithium batteries seem to

(02:10):
be everywhere. But otherwise every week we get to talk
about gear.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Heads this week's
Gearhead segment. It's followed by Middleton four Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate Gearheads.

Speaker 8 (02:27):
Check it out.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
They will set you straight.

Speaker 7 (02:30):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker. You
paid too much And remember when you purchased those rods
and guns. Just take them in the house when your
wife's gone.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Wally nick him in Hey Camp.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
This week's really cool piece of gear is a bullet.
It's the Federal Premium Trophy Copper three to eight Winchester
one fifty Green ammunition. These high performance rifle lords provide
pinpoint accuracy and aggressive expansion, yet with the copper palmer
tip bullet retains up to ninety nine percent of its
weight for deep penetration on a wide range of medium

(03:05):
and big game animals. These premium loads feature nickel plated
brass that defeats corrosion and aids in smooth extraction even
in the most extreme conditions. Federal Trophy Copper AMMO for
serious meat eaters.

Speaker 7 (03:19):
Captain Hey Wally, you know you're in the biz up there.
What do you see as AMMO? Are they moving away
from lead? You know they're talking about some of these
refuges requiring non lead bullets and you actually get a
credit card to pay for your AMMO. What are you
seeing on the shelves and what people are buying?

Speaker 4 (03:41):
Yes, big shift towards copper AMMO, especially for deer hunting,
and right now we're working with the Ferry Bluff Eagle Console.
If you buy a box of Copper AMO, you get
ten dollars back at our register, So ten dollars off
your purchase. And where we used to sell thirty forty
bucks a year, now it's probably more between one hundred
and fifty and two hundred bucks a year. So more

(04:03):
people are shooting namo, including myself, and other states are
going to clean non toxic cameo, like California it's only
bismuth coppers steel some are lead, So yes, that's definitely trending.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Captain.

Speaker 7 (04:17):
Yeah, I think there's four refuges that are going to
be opening to copper only no lead, I should say.
And then you can get a card to pay for that,
so reimbursement card, so you can check that out, do
a little search for that. But otherwise wally fish, ducks, pheasant,
deer update, I'll go quick here. I was on the
river doing some bowl hotting. Did put a dough in

(04:42):
the freezer. That north wind was whistling up past the
cabin like fifty five to sixty, and I thought it
would really move a ton of ducks down because it
had blown what for two days down there, and a
few came down. I was in the stand the next morning,
and I usually kind of count the shots because it
used to be sounded like a war zone, but it

(05:04):
seemed that a few ducks moved down, but the shooting
didn't last too long, maybe an hour or two, so
it didn't They're still held up somewhere. For all the
waterfall hunters.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
Well, Captain, the pheasant report is good. Of course, you
can go to game farms and get your dog a
lot of work, and that's fun with friends like Cedar
Valley Hunt Preserve. But public hunting has been good. Many
of the areas are stuck twice a week, so it's
a matter of just getting up early and finding a
spot and getting some pheasant hunting in. And fishing continues
to be really good. Some of the Madison Lakes are

(05:38):
kind of in a turnover turmoil, so fishing is not
the greatest yet, but as it gets clearer and colder,
cap'n look for some really good late fall fishing.

Speaker 7 (05:49):
Yeah, I had to those rivers, Mentos, quarter alls, hair, jiggs,
blade bates is good at the fall. Mississippi and Wisconsin.
All the dams are getting some fish. I can testify
to that. So that's really the place to go these
as these fish move up these river systems, Hey stay
with us, folks. Don Kirby's going to join us talking
the Wisconsin ice Fishing X bowl and Matt Lardinas from

(06:12):
AMPT Batteries.

Speaker 9 (06:16):

Speaker 7 (08:08):
You were listening to Ultimate Outdoors Radio.

Speaker 11 (08:10):
Let's get back to the Captain and the Waldorf.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Hey, welcome back, folks, and thanks for listening. This segment
is brought to you by the Wilderness Fishing Game Store
in sax City, Wisconsin. Stop by and visit with their
pro staff for expert advice on fishing gear, firearms, shooting supplies, clothing,
archery supplies, and other outdoor gear. Joining us next is
a great outdoorsman. Don loves spending time outdoors and doesn't

(08:35):
mind waking up in the marsh. He enjoys hunting ducks
and geese, turkeys and whitetailed deer, and fishing for bass
and big wallyes Don also works for Bess Durban Advertising,
which has a great team of creative marketers that live
for the outdoors.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Don Kirby, Welcome to the show.

Speaker 12 (08:52):
Hey, thank you very much. I'm glad to be here.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
John.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Have you been waterfowl hunting lately and how's the season
going so far?

Speaker 12 (09:01):
Yeah, you know, we try to get out several times
a week. Earlier this fall, you know, we had that
long stretch of dry, kind of warmish weather that makes
it a little tricky for duck hunting, but managed to
find a few cans and got on the wood ducks
pretty good early in the season. So yeah, it's been
a good fall so far. I've got a brand new pup,
and so we're starting to break him in a little bit.

(09:22):
So yeah, it's always a good time.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
What kind of dog did you get?

Speaker 12 (09:28):
I got a yellow Lab, but he's got that kind
of interesting fox red tint to him, so a lot
of times people mistake him for a golden when we're
cruising around. He's a pretty handsome young man.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Nice. I love labs.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Kate and I have had seven labs so far. They
are such a good house dog and great hunting dogs.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Aren't they?

Speaker 10 (09:49):
Oh?

Speaker 12 (09:49):
Yeah, for sure, yep.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
Don Now, you're very involved as an account executive and
help run several outdoor expos Which ones do you help organize?

Speaker 5 (10:01):
Well?

Speaker 12 (10:01):
So, our team owns and operates the Wisconsin Fishing ex
Bol that happens in Madison at the end of February
every year for many years, as a matter of fact,
coming up on our fortieth anniversary. And then of course
we also assist the Wisconsin Waterfall Association and help them
run their Waterfall Hunters Expole that happens at the end
of August in Oshkosh. And now coming up here next,

(10:25):
we've got the second edition of our new Wisconsin Ice
Fishing Expole that'll be also an Oshkosh, but we've moved
down the road a couple of miles to the EAA grounds.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
Well, we were there last year.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
I believe we had like six boats or something for
a Wilderness fish game. That thing was incredible. There are
so many people in there and they're all buying gear
like crazy. That was really one of the best shows
I've ever attended.

Speaker 12 (10:51):
It was pretty nuts right out of the gate, and
you know, of course we're super excited. Great a perfect example.
While you know, Wilderness is one of the vendors that
is a great partner to us, and like so many others,
they've more than doubled their space for this year. We
last year indoor and outdoor displays, we had about thirty

(11:11):
seven thousand square feet. This year we have fifty eight
thousand square feet just indoors in a single giant airplane
hangar down on the EAA grounds, which allowed all of
our existing partners, if they chose to, to become dramatically larger,
and then we were able to add a whole bunch
of additional vendors as well.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Well.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
I got to tell you that Don is extremely organized
and really fun and if you are into ice fishing
at any level. You can find stuff there that you
won't find at other places.

Speaker 12 (11:43):
Yeah, you know, it's almost like we sort of build
a mall, right, we build an outdoor shopping mall for
three days that then kind of disappears like a mirage
after we're done. But you're absolutely right, Wally. I mean,
from some of the biggest manufacturers in the ice fishing industry,
all of the big names that you would think of, Eskimo,
clam Otter. But the other really neat thing that I

(12:06):
like about these shows is that you have these small
entrepreneurial exhibits where you might not be able to see
those folks anywhere else, you know, unless you really surf
the inner webs, or in some cases these folks are
so small that they don't really even have a web
presence online, and so the only way you can experience
them is to come to a live event like this,

(12:26):
and that makes for a really great mix. If folks
are interested in ice fishing at all, whether you're you know,
an old hand or you're just interested in maybe giving
it a try. An event like this one upcoming next
month I think is going to be a great opportunity
for a lot of folks.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Our guest today is Don Kirby.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
We're discussing the twenty twenty four Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo
coming up soon.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
What are the dates of the event?

Speaker 12 (12:51):
So they this year we start out on Friday the thirteenth,
I'm gonna assume that'll be lucky, not unlucky, and then
Saturday the fourteenth and Sunday the fifth.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
Okay, And it's going to be at the EAA Center
in Oshkotch, which has really good parking and a lot
of space there.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
Correct.

Speaker 12 (13:10):
Oh, yeah, it's really tremendous.

Speaker 10 (13:11):
You know.

Speaker 12 (13:12):
This last July they ran six hundred and seventy five
thousand people to this venue over the course of nine
days for air venture and so by partnering with their
teams both for entry, you know, ticketing, parking, these folks
are you know, very much used to dealing with fifty
sixty thousand people a day. So we think we'll have

(13:32):
taken care of all of the you know, slowdowns and
whatnot that we may be experiencing our first year. We
should be ready to rock at this new venue.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
Fantastic, I'm excited about it. And how can people learn more?
Do you have a website.

Speaker 12 (13:46):
Yeah, absolutely, that's probably the best way you can jump
in and see the whole thing. Come together at icefishexpo
dot com or of course we're on Facebook and we'll
post all the latest updates there, and you know, I
would encourage people. There's advance ticketing available in there. You
can see the entire seminar listing. We have an incredible
lineup of speakers again, as well as the complete map

(14:07):
of the venue and on all the vendors are listed
there as well.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Well.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
Don look forward to seeing you there and thanks for
joining us this morning.

Speaker 12 (14:16):
Yeah, thanks so much. It was great to talk to you.

Speaker 3 (14:18):

Speaker 11 (15:48):
You can bet the Ultimate out Tours Radio guys do,
Let's get back to the high power half hour.

Speaker 7 (15:53):
It's Ultimate Outdours Radio. Hey, for all you outdoors folks
looking for ATVs Balm's Marine Older Sports Staton Wisconsin has
a full selection. Plus you can get your boat winter
rized and there's still boats for sale. Join me at
A and Ultimate Outdoors Radio. I'm gonna talk with Matt
from AMPED Batteries and the I want to have mad

(16:14):
on because there is this craze with lithium batteries that
people have just purchased a lot of them in the
past few years, and the winter months are right around
the corner. So I want to have mat on to
talk about winter care on batteries. And also I should
mention that Matt will be at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing
Expo in December.

Speaker 16 (16:33):
So Gamora, Matt, Hey, good morning, thank you for having
me again.

Speaker 7 (16:37):
You bet always good to have you on. You're full
of knowledge. So Matt, before we jump into AMP batteries,
you know there's I don't want to say a million,
but there's a lot of brands of lithium batteries forever.
So for everyone that owns lithium batteries, the different brands
and stuff, some thoughts on winter storage and so on,

(16:59):
matter what brand of battery it is.

Speaker 16 (17:03):
Yeah, and it doesn't matter if you have lithium or
regular batteries, following the proper steps in winter care is
always important to make sure that they're up and running
the next season.

Speaker 12 (17:12):
So the first thing I always start off with is
the worst thing you can do is leave.

Speaker 16 (17:18):
A battery attached to electronics or trolling motor or store
them depleted. A lot of your stuff today is they'll
have a parasitic drop. So even though it's not turned
on in your boat or wherever you're using it, they
will still have a small draw and can draw that
battery down. So what I would do is, if you're
going to store your products for a period of time,

(17:38):
no matter what you have, you know, put a charge
on them. For lithium, I recommend you know, fifty percent
or higher for a charge, and then make sure that
everything is detached from it. And then you know if
you can try to bring those indoors somewhere between forty
and eighty degrees or always the best conditions for storing
a battery.

Speaker 7 (17:59):
Well you if you just said the best tip, Matt,
there is a draw and I mean I pull all
my electronics, so really there's nothing drawing on those batteries.
But so for lithiums at and I know you mentioned
if you can bring them in, So what if a
person does not want to unhook those from his boat

(18:21):
and hopefully it's start in a shed or something. Any
thoughts on that.

Speaker 16 (18:25):
Yeah, I mean the heat will cause you know, more aware, faster,
but if you're putting them in cold temperatures, it's really
not that bad, you know, as long as you keep
an eye on your batteries, make sure that they have
a charge in them. You know, specifically in lithium have
have a charge in them, and then you know, as
long as your electronics are are not connected, you're not

(18:49):
going to have that draw. But colder weather can cause
a higher self discharge rate than in the temperatures between
forty and eighty degrees, So just be aware that you
may have to throw a charge on more often if
they're starting the cold.

Speaker 7 (19:04):
Yeah, so Matt ant batteries, what's new with ant batteries?
What do you got up there for the fishermen and
ice fisherman, I should say.

Speaker 16 (19:13):
Oh, yeah, absolutely well, we have a lot of year
round products. So this last year we introduced in all
of our larger batteries a heated charging functions. So people
that want to use them. Let's just say in a
ice house, you can actually put a charge on our
batteries when it's below freezing because lithium in general, you
cannot charge below freezing. So our batteries will will take

(19:36):
the charge from your charger by heating the battery itself
above freezing before it starts accepting a charge. So we
have that. But I'll tell you we've got a full
lineup from small batteries for your ice fishing electronics, your
ice houses, all the way up to your big you know,
twenty four and thirty six volt batteries all at the
heated function for in your boat if you're gonna be

(19:58):
using your boat even in cold weather.

Speaker 7 (19:59):
Can Yeah, and Matt, you well join me today Matt
from Amped Batteries. We're talking lithium batteries, care and what
you should be doing in the winter months. But Matt,
you're going to be at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing ex
Bowl where people can get one on one with you
and get your questions get their questions answered. We got
about a minute and a half left, Matt.

Speaker 16 (20:22):
Okay, yeah, we'll be at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Show.
We've got a pretty good sized corner booth there. We're
gonna be located right across from Thhn Brothers. And you
know we're going to have our full battery lineup from
our small batteries there to buy to our larger batteries
if you wanted to buy them or just take a
look at them and are also happy to talk to technology.

(20:42):
We'll give you the education that you need make sure
that you get outfit with the right product for your needs.

Speaker 7 (20:49):
Well, I'll say it's best to get one on one
because it's it's really easy just to get your easy
and better to get your questions answered. And that show
is going to be an osh gosh at the EAA
grounds just because it was so large last year it moved,
so Matt will be up there, Matt. And also you
have the correct chargers and everything else for install on

(21:11):
lithium batteries correct.

Speaker 16 (21:13):
Oh, absolutely, whether it's a small single charger or a
charger that'll charge all your batteries in your boat, matter
the application, we'll be able to set you up with
the right product.

Speaker 7 (21:23):
All right, Matt, Well, thanks for taking time. We appreciate
all the great info and see you up at the
ICE show.

Speaker 16 (21:28):
Yeah, we'll see you there. Thank you very much.

Speaker 7 (21:31):

And way to do it?

Speaker 7 (24:27):
Yeah? And this this week's UDA, we are traveling to Minnesota,
has nothing to do about hunting, but this is about
a coal ash spill in Grand Rapids. In July, the
largest coal plant in Minnesota leaked five point five million
gallons of wastewater contaminated with coal ash into Blackwater Creek,

(24:48):
which flows into the Mississippi River. The plant's owner originally
estimated that only one million gallons of water escaped.

Speaker 12 (24:57):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (24:58):
Not good for f definitely good. Five point five million gallons.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
That's great. That is not good.

Speaker 7 (25:08):
No, No, go ahead, Wally.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
Here's some good news this week.

Speaker 3 (25:37):
Captain, there you go.

Speaker 7 (25:38):
Time for our Dakota Sunset Resort. Make sure you make
your plans for ice fishing in the Dakotas. Give Dakota
Sunset Resort a call and book otherwise, Wally, you know
I didn't update anybody on the Tugfest. The soul called
Tugfest where they stretch a rope across the Mississippi and Illinois.

(25:59):
The state of Illinois competes against the state of Iowa. Wally,
who do you think won this year? Take a guest
Iowa or Illinois.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
I'm gonna go with Iowa, are you?

Speaker 7 (26:08):
I did too, but they got spanked. The Big Boys
of Iowa got spanked by Illinois. Basically, they call it
the most creative excuse for annual festival and beer drinking.
It's the thirty seventh year. The main event is a
series of twelve tug of wars. They use a twenty
seven hundred foot rope stretched across the Mississippi River and basically,

(26:34):
the Illinois teams pull against the Iowa teams. Twelve teams competed.
The Illinois team pulled ahead of the Iowa tuggers ten
to two to win it. So, yeah, the Iowa boys
got spanked.

Speaker 4 (26:50):
I wonder if the Illinois cheated, maybe they put more
people on their end of the rope.

Speaker 7 (26:55):
Can you imagine the beer drank at that festival afterwards?

Speaker 4 (26:58):
I would have one in my hand while I'm doing
the tug of war with the other hand.

Speaker 7 (27:01):
There you go.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
Sounds like a great time down there.

Speaker 7 (27:04):
Hey, Wally, I got some news here. It's kind of
interesting for our pets. You know, we've covered the silver
carp issue for many years, and this is coming out
of Chicago. Illinois. You know, they tried to rebrand this
silver carp as Kopi. But one of the most promising
markets for the so called invasive carp now is pet food.

(27:28):
There is some pet treats on the market made with
silver carp. There's a chewy fish jerky for pups. There
is a silver carp treat for cats. They make a
freeze dried silver carp dog treat, and they say this

(27:48):
is really good for the and I guess if you're
feeding a dog fish, it's probably pretty good for him.
I don't know, but you would have to do a search.
I can't see the well on the back gets the
name is arch. I can't see the company name, so
you'd have to do a search. But that's kind of interesting,
another way to use silver carp.

Speaker 4 (28:08):
I guess I think it's a good idea cap since
they're so abundant. Hey, you know, we hit a little
on archery and hunting. Bowt hunting seemed to really fire
up around here November first, on that Friday, after all
the weather systems and so on, in high wind, but
the bucks seem to be on their feet. Some really
beautiful bucks have been gotten in the archery season.

Speaker 3 (28:28):
Already captain. Any of your buddies eroed some big ones?

Speaker 7 (28:31):
Ummm no, I haven't. I mean I've shared some pictures
of some giants. Oh, I know Greg Martel out of Lacrosse.
Remember he won the boat at that bass tournament. Yeah, yeah,
he had a nice picture I shared on Saturday that
was a dandy. He's and a few other ones here
and there. But it seems like people are either saying

(28:53):
it's really good or they're I don't know. Here's my thought, Wally,
is these bucks moved to water areas of water, and
I see it happen right here where I live. They'll
head to the bottom line where there's creeps when it's
dry for a couple months. And I think that's what
you can see. Those bucks had moved where there's water
because it was so dry for so long, and it's
going to take them a little bit to get back

(29:15):
up here. And I've seen that from talking to the
neighbors with cameras. So it's just a little food for
thought there.

Speaker 4 (29:21):
Bean Carlson, our Browning rep who's been on a show,
and he's gotten a nice buck again this year. So
you know, scouting and using your equipment wisely and you
can get lucky.

Speaker 3 (29:31):
Captain.

Speaker 7 (29:31):
Yeah, well, yeah, quick one here. I didn't set my timer,
so I don't know where we're at. But they want
to make the eagle legal. There is a group in Minnesota,
the National Eagle Center in Wabashaw is working with members
of Congress to get the eagle officially designated as the
national bird. How many people didn't know that it was not.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
The national bird.

Speaker 4 (29:54):
So we'll see all that man though, Captain, we're out
of time, but we want to thank everyone for listen
and make sure you catch us worldwide on iHeartRadio.
