Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with Ultimith's Outdoors Radio. Want a quest
to bring the outdoors to you once again.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain and the
Wall Dog.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Hey Good Saturday Morning.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
This is Wally the Wall Dog VAMFI along with Captain
Terry Pride.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Morning.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Captain, Hey, Good, Saturday morning to everyone in the outdoor world. Well,
Wally and I are at the Wisconsin Fishing ex Bowl
the thirteenth through the fifteenth up here at the EAA
Grounds in Oshkosh. Hops. You need to be here, full
lineup of seminar, speakers, vendors and if you need tickets,
I would just go online to get them or show
up at the door. But kids under twelve are free. Wally,
(00:59):
a whole bunch of speakers and booths and all sorts
of product to purchase.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Yeah, and this is the second annual Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo.
The first annual last year was incredible. It was so busy,
in fact, they had to move to the EAA Grounds
which has like fifty nine thousand square feet all indoors.
All the food vendors are indoors. There's over one hundred
and seventy booths with new products, some great deals. There's
(01:26):
crazy ice fish houses set up, and at least a
dozen seminars, so it's going to be pretty amazing weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Captain.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, some great seminar speakers. Tom Bowley, Larry Smith, Jim
Cassuda just about well, and Greg Kartch is there for
some kids stuff like always. But otherwise, Wally, I see
there's one hundred and seventy Yeah, one hundred and seventy booths. Wow,
that is I think that's a record. So what I like,
Wally is there's food trucks, food trucks on the ground.
(01:58):
So how about guests, Wally, we got a all of them.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yeah, We've got Dan Durbin, Larry Smith, Bob Allen, Jim Cassuda,
Matt Lardinos, we have Auto and Vicki from Wounded Warriors,
and Don Kirby all on this special one hour show
promoting the Wisconsin Ice Fishing ex Bowl.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Say well this folks, Dan Durban's coming up. Dan Durbin
is the co owner for the upcoming Wisconsin Ice ex
Bowl December thirteenth through the fifteenth. Before I bring Dan on,
I want to mention we always got to mention the
sponsors because These shows do not happen without them. Acne
Tackle Beaver, Dan, the Ion team, and Wisconsin Fishing Association,
(02:43):
Outdoor News NPAA, n Eskimo. Thanks for the sponsors for
helping with the show. Good morning, Dan, Good morning.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
Thanks for giving our sponsors some props there too. Appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Well, Dan, you know, none of us get very far
without sponsorships, would we. So Dan, let's touch you moved
the event from last year where?
Speaker 6 (03:04):
What?
Speaker 1 (03:04):
When?
Speaker 6 (03:04):
Where?
Speaker 1 (03:05):
And all that good stuff for the upcoming ice ex Bowl.
Speaker 7 (03:08):
Yeah, we did.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
We moved it up to the EA grounds. We we
grossly underestimated how many people would come because there hasn't
been a nice show in Wisconsin for almost eight years
and nothing has been you know on you know, next
to the bagel factory, Walleye Deal and in that Fox
Valley area, they've never had one. And we were hoping
(03:31):
for five thousand, and we put twelve thousand through the door,
and it just was too much for that facility, and
so we sort of had to move. And we're happy
we did because I mean, EAA, they put what eight
hundred thousand people through that thing in ten days and
(03:51):
you know, up to twenty five thirty thousand a day
sometimes or more, and so it's going to be a
much smoother process. We do have shuttle running, two shuttles
running NonStop, you know, picking people up, dropping them off.
Very easy access in terms of getting on off the
freeway into the queue of VAA, and plenty of ticket
(04:13):
counters and uh more, I mean the amount of exhibitors
that that we you know, we almost doubled in size,
and you know, our first year, I think there were
a few brands that you know, kind of pumped the
brakes and like, well, let's see how this thing goes.
And now they're all here. I mean, we have a
wable waiting list to get in. We're absolutely packed, and
(04:35):
we have ever major brand and and all the cool
stuff that you can't get at the big box stores too.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
So yeah, and besides that, Dan being at the EAA,
you will probably match attendance with the EAA show eventually,
I would guess.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
So oh yeah, sure, yeah, I'll start by radio show.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
The neat thing Dan. People could actually fly into the show, now,
is that right?
Speaker 5 (04:59):
They actually I don't they want Maybe there'll be some
big shots from Pure Fishing or somebody's swooping in the sea.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Dan, let's talk tickets. I see you can just pick
them up online. That would be my suggestion. You can
pick everything up there, parking passes, so on, you know,
for to get into the show.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
Yeah, I mean, the only thing is there is a
I can't honestly I can't remember. It's the buck fifty
or two dollars fee that the ticketing service charges. We
don't up charge it. That's just straight cost to us
for doing that. So if you wanted the cheapest way possible,
ten bucks at the door, eight bucks if you're military vetter,
first responder, kids twelve and hundred are free. So I
(05:39):
guess it's up to the person it. Honestly, it's going
to be so smooth and so fast. I mean, just
like our Madison show. I'd say ninety five percent, and
people pay at the door. I don't know if it's
just Daryn demographic or what, but so, yeah, you can
do it either way.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Good hey, and I see you as some great lodging
prices ninety two ninety nine dollars for people that might
just want to stay over. Check those out, folks. Hey,
uh got a couple of minutes, Dan seminar speakers. I see,
you got kids seminars, Tom Bowley, Larry Smith, anyone else
you want to comment on there?
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Yeah, I mean we got I'd see, it's a class
of its own. I don't think there's any other show
in the country that has as many or the variety
of seminars we have. You know, we get guys speaking
on Winnebagover, but you know we got your local gym
Casuta he's doing Shallow the Gills and Ericoattia Pike, I
mean yeah, and the kid's stuff. They're giving away free combos.
(06:35):
That's the Greg KARTSTI it's always awesome.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
And we get Barb and Clam and you know that
the one that I'm probably most excited to see is
Larry Smith's thirty three years of Guiding Tales. It's not
it's not a how to aware to her tactic, but
you know that Cat's got some stories that'll just make
it cry.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, I would say, I would say, just go to
the website for all of them. Just got a minute left, Dan,
Let's let's touch. You've got a ton of exhibitor boosts
and this is where people can go and rub elbows
with the tech people, whether it's lithium batteries, I see amps.
They're a ton of tech people to talk with. Got
about the forty five seconds.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Dan, Yeah, there's a ton I mean, guys from Garman
and Thorn Brothers. And we've got vendors that are specifically
coming to talking into you know, into how this stuff works,
forward facing and all that. And yeah, over one hundred
and seventy vendors, so we were pretty much double last year.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Absolutely. How about a website for more info that people
can still so people can get into the show.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Yeah, it's easy. It's just icefishexpo dot com. That's icefishexpo
dot com.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Thanks Dan for the great interview. Coming up next is
Larry Smith talking ice fishing on the Winnebagos system and
thirty years of guiding experiences. Joining us next is a
great outdoorsman. Larry is fished, hunted, and spent time out
doors all over North America. Larry has a terrific year
round television show called Larry Smith Outdoors. Larry is also
(08:08):
a fishing guide for both open water and hardwater fishing.
He also is a featured seminar speaker and fishing educator
at sports shows all over the Midwest. Larry Smith, Welcome
to the show.
Speaker 8 (08:18):
Hey Wally, how are you doing today?
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Doing great? Larry?
Speaker 4 (08:21):
How's your TV show going? And where have you filmed lately?
Speaker 8 (08:24):
Well, I'll tell you what. We've been traveling all over
the place. We were just up in the up and
we were doing something pretty unique.
Speaker 7 (08:31):
You know.
Speaker 8 (08:32):
The cool part about like what we do is we
filmed fifty two new shows a year just for network alone,
and then probably another twenty some shows we filmed for
for everything else that we do here, and so you know,
you're always trying to be diverse on what you're doing,
and really you don't want your audience to anything to
get staled. So definitely keeping things moving is a big thing.
(08:54):
We were up filming with some commercial fishermen last week
on Whitefishing Boy. That was really an interesting thing. It's
cool to see the other side how people spend the
you know, these guys make their living off off of
the outdoors too, by the part, you know, very cool.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Also, I just watched the show last night where you
were on Green Bay with Jeff van Rimmortal and that
was fantastic and you boated a fifty four inch green
Bay monster all on film.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Tell us a little bit.
Speaker 8 (09:24):
Yeah, that was it was very cool. That was actually
my personal best musky of all times. I've had clients
get them that big, but that was my fish. And
I'll tell you it was an interesting deal because we
had three days in the cast and that was the
first bite that I actually got. Now was towards the
end of the third Day's.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
All muskie fishing is. You just got to keep grinding,
as you guys were saying, and you keep casting hoping
for that one bite and to get a fifty four incher. Congratulations,
that's awesome.
Speaker 8 (09:53):
Yeah, I appreciate that for sure. So yeah, no, lots
of good things coming up all the time. You know,
today I'm a duck hunting right now and enjoying a
little bit of time with my dog here. And you
know that's the cool part when you have the passion
and the love which we're so lucky in this country
to have the resources and have the things that we
(10:14):
have here to be able to do all these things.
And you know, each week on our show, we always
give gratitude and thanks to all of our military men
and women of course, with all the firefighters, paramedics and
and all of our law enforcement agents. You know, that's
the big part about the outdoors. I think that people
really need to grasp onto when you're lucky enough to
(10:35):
be able to enjoy this. What we have here is
that there's a big reason why we have all these things,
and a lot of people have fought really hard for
this country to give us these opportunities that we're able
to have.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Wally, we are very lucky to be Americans and Larry,
you will be a featured seminar speaker at the twenty
twenty four Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo, which would be held
in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at the EAA. It's December thirteen, fourteen fifteen.
Do you have your topics picked out?
Speaker 8 (11:05):
Yeah, this is going to be I've got a couple
we're going to be doing some topics. Our top ones
are going to be basically fishing to win a bagos
system and kind of talking about how things have changed
out there over the last ten years. You know, that
system used to be a really you know, a murky,
dirty body of water. Now with the zebra muscles, it's
(11:27):
really changed it. It's such a clear body water and
we have weed growth all over the place. And to me,
I think it really is more enjoyable now because it's
really changed the system and there seems to be a
lot more pan fish out there on all species, crappies, perch, gills,
and it also really is the helps out the walleye population,
(11:49):
so now all this young of the year has a
place to actually go and hide. So that'll be one
of the seminars. I'm also going to basically talk about
some of the experiences over the last thirty three years
I've had with clients, and that's a very interesting I've
got a lot of very interesting stories because I've guided
a lot of people from all walks of life and
(12:12):
they've all been good.
Speaker 9 (12:13):
You know.
Speaker 8 (12:13):
That's the part I love about my job is that
you know what the people that you deal with in
the outdoors. I'm not saying that sometimes people don't go
through things, because we all do, but the people in
the outdoors really appreciate and again it goes back to
the things in this country, and they appreciate life in general. Wally.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
Yeah, it's great to be guiding folks and they're just
enjoying their day. And if somebody would like to hire
you for an ice fishing adventure or open water.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
How can people reach you.
Speaker 8 (12:41):
Larry, They can just go to our website, Wally and
go to Larrysmith Outdoors at gmail dot com and get
a hold of us. We're basically guiding seven days a
week out on the Winnebago system itself. We provide pretty
much everything. The only thing they need to do is
bring something to eat and drink, and of course everybody
got to have a license that is with an age,
(13:02):
and we basically just really make take everything. You don't
have to worry about transportation out on the lake or back.
You don't have to worry about bringing any gear. We
have all permanent checks that we can move people around
really easily in and it just makes it a very
enjoyable day and a very enjoyable experience.
Speaker 1 (13:21):

Grounds in a scotsh December thirteenth through the fifteen tons
of ice fishing gears, seminars, kids' activities and giveaways every
day sponsored by Wisconsin Outdoor News, Ion Basketball Ice Team
and Acme and Thorn Brothers.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Does zabar really?
Speaker 13 (15:33):
You know in the woods?
Speaker 2 (15:35):
You've met the ultimate Ontours radio guys too.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Let's get back to the high power half hour.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
It's Awesomeate onto Ours Radio.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Hey, welcome back, folks.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
The Captain and I are live at the Wisconsin Ice
Fishing Expo at the EAA Grounds. There's a great ice
fishing show, Captain with tons of boots and a lot
of fun stuff to see here.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
And Wally, there is a little fever because people are
actually out ice fishing and you need to stop up.
Got a full line of seminar speakers, one hundred and
seventy booths, food trucks. Here's a good place to rub
elbows with vendors regarding product and so on. But if
you need tickets, I would just go online. And obviously
(16:17):
you can get them at the door, and they have
a giant raffle. The Wounded Warriors are going to be
giving away a ice house full of gear. It's just
a fifty dollars ticket. So Wally, let's jump into a
couple more guests.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
Well, coming up next, we're going to have Bob Allen,
who writes some excellent books for children and gets them
involved in the outdoors. And after him, Jim Cassuda will
be discussing shallow water ice fishing for big blue gales.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Well, join me today in Ultimate Outdoors Radio fellow named
Bob Allen. I had a chance to meet at some
of the outdoor shows and Bob is the author of
many kids outdoors and fishing books, so we wanted to
have him on board because he is going to be
attending the Wisconsin Ice ex Bo early December, a lot
of shows. Good morning, Bob, Good morning, Well Bob, good
(17:05):
to have you back on. I think it's been a
year or so. We'll talk about your new book coming out,
But I'm kind of curious how did you get into
writing kids books and how long you been at it?
Did your wife just say you had to figure out
some way to get me some income or what.
Speaker 14 (17:23):
No, I've been at it about six years. I've had
a new book each year. So my last book, The
Panfish Party, is my sixth book. I got started in that.
I'm long retired and my wife says, you need a project. Yeah. Yeah, Well,
well I wrote a little bit in high school and
she said, well, you got to write about something, you know,
And I said, well, i coached hockey for thirty five years,
(17:46):
but I've been fishing for seventy years, so I'm going
to write about fishing.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
So well, and you know, Bob, you attend, Well, I
should ask you how many shows do you do a
year as far as selling your books at outdoor shows?
Speaker 14 (17:58):
I probably do between in fifteen shows.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Yeah, and remind folks that you can either pick up
his book and a show or you can contact him directly. Well, Bob,
let's talk about the new book coming out. And is
this book called The Panfish Party?
Speaker 14 (18:15):
It is Perch, Crappie and Google are having a party
and you're invited. So my previous books, I'd written about walleyes,
muskies and bass and so I thought, well that's enough
of that, but my retail account said no, no, no, you
got to do another one. I said, well, if I
did another book, what should it be about? And they said, well, panfish,
(18:37):
because pantfish is really the most popular fish that kids
go after. It's experienced trying to catch a panfish is
probably their first panfish experiences, the first time the gone fishing,
and they're plentiful and they're willing to bite. So it's
a good place to start.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
You know, Bob, you talk about that, and the more
and more older folks I meet fishing, it's funny how
they can be a walleye fisherman, a bass fisherman, and
as they get older, they kind of turned back to
chasing panfish. I don't know if it's just less pressure
or just kind of you know, they like to eat
panfish or what it is.
Speaker 14 (19:14):
Yeah, it can be, you know, they moved from the
competitiveness of fishing to the contemplat of just relax and
have a good time, catch a few fish, sometimes for
the pant I mean, my favorite fish to eat are perch.
But just to be out there with your grandson or
son catch it a few pantfish, it's a delightful way
to spend a day.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Yeah, So folks that might be attending the Wisconsin Ice
ex Bowl in December up at the EAA grounds. What
can what will you have at your booth, Bob, And
what can they expect to see and purchase?
Speaker 14 (19:48):
Well, I've got all so many books will be available there,
and I also include some little plush fish. A lot
of times the kids like to have a little plush
fish with the book, and so we have some panfish
and muskie and walleye and a mass as far as
plush to go along with the books. But certainly we
have all six of the books there and we offer
(20:10):
a little discount at the show so they don't have
to pay full retail for them.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Yeah. And the one thing about your books the pictures,
and you know, kind of I call it hooks kids
with just the way you produced the book with the
really cool pictures. We got a minute and a half.
Also you have we want to touch on this Walter,
the Willie Wiley, Walleye, Monica, the Muskie, Larry and Lily
(20:35):
Largemouth and Sam and Sarah Smallma. They're going to be
at the show too, huh.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
They'll all be there.
Speaker 14 (20:42):
Wiley Walleye. That was the first book and it's become
the most popular and it's then it's seventh printing now,
and so I'm really proud of that. And every one
of my books has won awards. So I've selected three
good illustrators and along with the books itself, they won
awards for the pictures and illustrations in them. So I'm
(21:03):
really happy about that.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Yeah, and I know when you and I talked, we
got about a minute left. Bob, you have been basically
recommended and just by so many professionals that have looked
at your books, approved of your books. People in the
fishing industry and other industries, so very highly spoken of
in the kid's book business. The Ice Expo is December
(21:29):
thirteenth through the fifteenth EAA location. If folks aren't there, Bob,
where else can they find your books?
Speaker 14 (21:36):
Well, in the Madison area, I'm at the Lake City
Books and on the west side of town the Dorn
Pro Shop. But they can always just they can go
to Amazon, or they can go to my website Bob
allenbooks dot com and pick up books there and everything
I put out there in retail. And when I send
him out for my website, I personally sign them for
(21:57):
getting a signed book.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Great.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
Hey, that was a great interview. With Bob Allen. His
books are available online. We can find him at different stores.
He does a lot of great things to get kids
out tours. Also, Jim Cassuda is coming up discussing shallow
water ice fishing for big blue gils.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
Stay tuned. This can be a great interview with Jim.
Speaker 4 (22:17):
Jim has iced many many beautiful perch and big blue
gils and earned the nickname of Mendota Jim many years
ago after his success on Big Lake Mendota. Jim pro
staffs for clam and is a member of the clam
Ice Team. Jim also is an expert on Vexlar products
and he pro staffs for Vexlar. Also, Jim Cassuda, Welcome
to the show.
Speaker 9 (22:38):
Hi Wally, good morning.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Well thanks for joining us, Jim. And what's new with
Vexlar and what units do you like to use?
Speaker 9 (22:47):
Well, the big news is they have a new Veslar
FLX thirty eight and it's mounted on a pro pac
Elite and so both of those two items come together
and it's all new. We all got hit three years
ago with the Flex thirty broadbrand. Now they have the
Flex thirty eight. And then the other thing.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
That one have is yeah, go ahead, And it has
a zoom feature right that you can move around, so
you can really tee the small jig correct.
Speaker 9 (23:18):
It's called manual zoom and sweat. A variable window that
can be either six, twelve or eighteen feet and if
you want to do it like normal, it's always the
bottom enlarge, but you can also move it around if
you have suspended fish and you want to really zero
in on a certain height for suspended fish. And of
(23:42):
course it's a broadband transducer, so it has variable frequencies.
And that's the beauty of these FLX thirty eights and
the thirty and I haven't run the thirty eight yet,
so I have to really kind of you know, don't
get overly specific until I really get some ice time.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
Speaking of ice time, the twenty twenty four Wisconsin Ice
Fish Fishing Expos coming up soon.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
When and where will it be held?
Speaker 9 (24:11):
Yeah, the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo December thirteenth through fifteenth,
and last year for all you guys that went, there
was at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh, and that
was a great event, but it was terrible as far
as parking and admission. And I heard there was cars
backed all the way up like a mile to Highway
(24:32):
forty one. So this year it's at the EAA Grounds
Experimental Aircraft Grounds in Oshkosh and that's right near Highway
forty one and there, so I come up from Madison.
It's like my first exit there. But there's supposed to
be really good parking twice as big of a hall,
so we're really looking forward to having it at the
(24:54):
EAA this year.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
Well, last year's show was amazing.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Over fifteen thousand people went and it was incredibly busy,
but you're right, it took like an hour and fifteen
minutes sometimes to get in the show. It just tells
you people love the ice fish. They want to see
the new gear and their specialty items that you might
not see anywhere else at the show.
Speaker 9 (25:17):
For sure. And I'll be working the Vexlar booth. And
last year, for all of you guys that came to Ashcash,
we were the first booth on the right as he
came in, which is like super prime. But this year
we were right dead smack in the middle booth three
fourteen and three sixteen and that's the Vexlar k Drill booth.
So I'll be there. And the other product that Vexler
(25:39):
has and I'm really excited and I'm going to get
is the fish Scout camera. They have two models of
base Camp, which is for all you guys that have
permanent fish houses and you hook HDMI to a large
screen TV. But the Predator is the one I really
want to get, and that's got a all self containing
SD card slot built in lithium ion battery. Know this
(26:02):
heavy sla ce let as. It's just awesome modern. I
need to have it.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
It's like me when new stuff comes out, you really
want to try it and you want to have it. Jim,
I know you'll be speaking at the Ice Fishing Expo.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
What's your topic going to be.
Speaker 9 (26:22):
I'm going to talk about shallow water bluegills and for
all of you guys at fish and Southern Wisconsin, man
oh man, that's us. We're the pan fish masters when
it comes to bluegill. We use inline rods like pulsators,
and we also have different technicals. I mentioned using underwater
(26:42):
cameras and there's some stuff that I want to talk
about as far as using field eye jag. It's just
going to be a great seminar. I'm really excited because
people are really pumped up. We've been waiting and waiting
and we've had two really sketchy seasons, so this season's
going to be good.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Oh, you mentioned the pulsator rods. I have a forty
eight inch one and that's the road where the line
goes through the blank and they're super sensitive and when
it's cold out they don't freeze up either. They're nice
to work with, aren't they right.
Speaker 9 (27:14):
You don't reel up your line, you just set it
and now you're presenting the line without adding any curl
or coil and you're just working the same vertical piece
of line. You're a little taller than me, Wally, I
use a forty two inch.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
Well, Jim, thanks for joining us, and I'll do my
best to watch your seminar. We'll be up there in
Oshkosh at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo December thirteen, fourteen
and fifteen. So Jim, thanks for taking time out and
joining us for sure, and.
Speaker 9 (27:43):
If anyone hits me up, I'll give them a Beck
Flyer pro coupon codes for off the website.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Hey, thanks Jim Casuda, great interview, Wally. We are at
the Wisconsin Ice ex Bowl and they have a pretty
cool raffle where man pretty nice prize for.
Speaker 4 (27:59):

valued over fourteen thousand dollars. The drawing is going to
be Sunday and we are live at the EAA Grounds

Speaker 4 (28:15):
Inside the trailer there's augur and drill, tip ups and
tip downs, jig poles and lures, frable, electric mental bucket,
fish locator, electric filey knife, and mister heater. So if
you want to get into ice fishing, you could get
very lucky and for fifty dollars you could win this
entire package.
Speaker 3 (28:32):

great ice fishing spots, Devil's Lakes, Lake of the Woods,

speakers giving all their hot tips and obviously you'll walk
out of here with some more great bas coming up

Auto and VICKI stay with us. You're on board with

Speaker 3 (31:07):
This amazing show, Captain.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
There's every ice fishing item you can imagine, from all
the big vendors into little guys that do stuff in
their basement, pouring plastics and stuff. So anything in ice
fishing is available. Here at this show, Captain.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
Yeah, and you know you need new hubshacks, need any
type of gear. It will be available, and we should
mention a full lineup of seminar speakers like Tom Bowley,
Larry Smith, Cody Solberg, Greg karch is doing a kids one.
I would say, go to the website and check that out,
(31:43):
the Ice ex Bowl website one hundred and seventy thousand,
one hundred and seventy three. Yeah, then they'd have to
move again one hundred and seventy boost here. But otherwise
I would come early, come every day because there's going
to be different seminar speakers. But so joining us coming
up next, Matt Lardinis from Ant Batteries going to join us,
(32:06):
and then we're going to talk about the Wounded Warriors
Raffle with Otto and Vicki, where you can actually win
an ice house loaded with gear, so we'll jump into that.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
There is plenty of parking available here at the EAA Center.
There are buses available, so if you're parking a distance away,
you can jump on a shuttle bus and get to
this event. It's amazing. There's so many products available here.
Anything in the ice world's available. There's also food trucks,
so there's hot coffee, cold beer, and delicious food options.
(32:38):
So come on out to the show and enjoy yourself.
You'll learn a ton about ice fishing.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
Yeah, Matt's coming up with ant battery. Here we go.
I want to have mad On because there is this
craze with lithium batteries that people have just purchased a
lot of them in the past few years, and the
winter months are right around the corner, so I want
to have mad On to talk about winter care on
batteries and also should mention that Matt will be at
the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo in December.
Speaker 15 (33:06):
So Gamara, Matt, Hey, good morning, thank you for having
me again.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
You bet always good to have you on. You're full
of knowledge. So Matt, before we jump into amp batteries,
you know, there's I don't want to say a million,
but there's a lot of brands of lithium batteries. So
for everyone that owns lithium batteries, the different brands and stuff,
some thoughts on winter storage and so on, no matter
(33:33):
what brand of battery it is.
Speaker 15 (33:36):
Yeah, and it doesn't matter if you have lithium or
regular batteries. Following the proper steps and winter care is
always important to make sure that they're up and running
the next season.
Speaker 18 (33:45):
So the first thing I always start off with is
the worst thing you can do is.
Speaker 15 (33:51):
Leave a battery attached to electronics or trolling motor or
store them depleted. A lot of your stuff today is
they'll have a parasitic drought. Know it's not turned on
in your boat or wherever you're using it, they will
still have a small draw and can draw that battery down.
So what I would do is you're going to store
your products for a period of time no matter what
(34:12):
you have, you know, a put a charge on them.
For lithium, I recommend you know, fifty percent or higher
for a charge, and then make sure that everything is
detached from it. And then you know, if you can
try to bring those indoors somewhere between forty and eighty
degrees or always the best conditions for storing a battery.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Well you you just said the best tip, Matt. There
is a draw and I mean I pull all my electronics,
so really there's nothing drawing on those batteries. But so
for lithiums at and I know you mentioned if you
can bring them in. So what if a person does
not want to unhook those from his boat and hopefully
(34:55):
it's started in a shed or something. Any thoughts on that.
Speaker 15 (34:59):
Yeah, I mean the heat will cause you know, more
aware faster, but if you're putting them in cold temperatures,
it's really not that bad, you know, as long as
you keep an eye on your batteries, make sure that
they have a charge in them. You know, specifically in
lithium have have a charge in them, and then you know,
as long as your electronics are are not connected, you're
(35:22):
not going to have that draw. But colder weather can
cause a higher self discharge rate than in the temperatures
between forty and eighty degrees, So.
Speaker 18 (35:32):
Just be aware of that.
Speaker 15 (35:33):
You may have to throw a charge on more often
if they're starting the cold.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
Yeah, so matt ant batteries, what's new with ant batteries?
What do you got up there for the fishermen and
ice fisherman, I should say.
Speaker 18 (35:46):
Oh, yeah, absolutely well, we have a lot of year
round products.
Speaker 7 (35:49):
So this last year we.
Speaker 15 (35:51):
Introduced in all of our larger batteries a heated charging functions.
So people that want to use them, let's just say
in a ice house. You can actually put a charge
on our batteries when it's below freezing because lithium in general,
you cannot charge below freezing. So our batteries will will
take the charge from your charger by heating the battery
(36:12):
itself above freezing before it starts accepting a charge.
Speaker 7 (36:16):
So we have that.
Speaker 15 (36:16):
But I'll tell you we've got a full lineup from
small batteries for your ice fishing electronics, your ice houses,
all the way up to your big you know, twenty
four and thirty six bolt batteries, all with the heated
function for in your boat if you're gonna be using
your boat even in cold weather conditions.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Yeah, and Matt, you well join me today Matt from
Amped Batteries. We're talking lithium batteries, care and what you
should be doing in the winter months. But Matt, you're
going to be at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing ex Bowl
where people can get one on one with you and
get your questions get their questions answered. We got about
a minute and a half left, Matt.
Speaker 15 (36:55):
Okay, Yeah, we'll be at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Show.
Speaker 8 (36:59):
We've got a pretty good side corner booth there.
Speaker 15 (37:01):
We're going to be located right across from Thuhn Brothers.
And you know we're going to have our full battery
lineup from our small batteries there to buy to our
larger batteries if you wanted to buy them or just
take a look at them.
Speaker 7 (37:13):
And we're also happy to.
Speaker 15 (37:14):
Talk to technology. We'll give you.
Speaker 18 (37:17):
The education that you need, make sure that you get
outfit with the right product for your needs.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
Well, I'll say it's best to get one on one
because it's it's really easy just to get your easy
and better to get your questions answered. And that show
is going to be an osh gosh at the EAA
grounds just because it was so large last year it moved,
so Matt will be up there, Matt. And also you
have the correct chargers and everything else for install on
(37:45):
lithium batteries correct.
Speaker 15 (37:46):
Oh, absolutely, whether it's a small single charger or a
charger that will charge all your batteries in your boat,
matter the application, we'll be able to set you up
with the right product.
Speaker 4 (37:55):
Hey, thanks Matt for the great interview. Coming up next
we'll be speaking with Ottawain Vicky with the Wounded Warriors Raffle,
where folks can get a chance for fifty dollars to
win a fourteen thousand dollars ice castle scout.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
We're going to talk with Vicky Reads and Vicky is
with Wounded Warriors of Wisconsin. We're going to talk a
little bit about that group. And also we're gonna we
have an announcement that for the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo,
Vicky is heading up the raffle which they're giving away
a fourteen thousand dollars ice fishing shack. I call it well,
(38:33):
good marn.
Speaker 19 (38:33):
Vicky, good morning, how are you good?
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Well Vicky, let's kick this off before we get into
the raffle. Let's let's talk about Wounded Warriors of Wisconsin
and what you do.
Speaker 14 (38:45):
Sure.
Speaker 19 (38:45):
Our organization is called Wounded Warriors United of Wisconsin and
Otto and I are have based your organization out of Gleason.
We are an all volunteer organization serving only Wisconsin veterans.
Our mission as we for the last ten years, we
take Wisconsin veterans hunting and fishing all around the United States.
(39:06):
We cover all the expenses. We also have a retreat
farm up in Gleason called Country Haven Farm. It's a
retreat where vets can come and hang out for a
weekend or up to a week with or without their family,
just to get away and escape the life daily challenges.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Wow, and so Vicky, does most of your support just
come from donations through people that want to help?
Speaker 19 (39:31):
Yes, we are not like these large national organizations. I
always say we're family run. We've got some dedicated staff
of volunteers, but we are all volunteer and we rely
on donations from people like you to support us through raffles,
through donations, through employee fundraisers, independent fundraising events. But that's
(39:53):
how we survive.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
Well, hats off to you because I think you know
we need to do as much as pos for our vets. So, Vicky,
let's jump over. You're going to be at the Wisconsin
Ice Fishing Expo in Oshkosh in December at the AAA
field and you are heading up a giant raffle. So
do you want to tell us about this little ice
(40:15):
shack that people can win?
Speaker 19 (40:17):
This is outstanding. We are really excited about this.
Speaker 7 (40:20):
This raffle is.
Speaker 19 (40:21):
Going on right now. It will culminate and the drawing
will be for this giant prize on Sunday at the
Ice Fishing Expo. It'll be on display. It's an ice
castle scout, not only the scout, but everything you need
the ice fish. It's going to have an augur, a drill,
a heater, jig rods, poles, fish finder, I mean everything
(40:42):
that you need, electric, mental bucket, fully knife, so whatever
you need the ice fish will be encased in that
ice castle Scout. And the value on that conservatively is
over fourteen thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
Well, that's a pretty cool package. There will be some
screams up there at the show and they announced that
name trust Me because so basically fifty dollars tickets each.
You want to tell us a little bit about how
people can purchase their tickets.
Speaker 19 (41:10):
Yes, Wisconsin Raffle license rules requires an in person exchange.
We can't sell tickets online or over the phone, but
we have volunteers all around the state that can meet
up with people that want to buy a ticket, and
all they have to do is call me at nine
two zero two zero three eight six nine two and
I can get them connected with someone who can meet
(41:33):
up to get them a ticket. We will obviously have
tickets available at the show, but our goal is to
sell six hundred tickets to help our budget and meet
our needs for next year, rising costs of fuel and
guide fees and regulations. We're really in need of this
to be a very successful raffle.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
Well, that sounds like a really cool deal. Join me
to Dan Altiman Outdoors Radio, VICKI reats and Vicky is
with the Wounded Warriors United of Wisconsin. We're talking about
the ice fishing raffle happening at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing
Show and ash Gosh, So on the advertisement here, I
see that there is a call for tickets number which
(42:14):
is nine two zero four seven zero eighteen forty five.
Is that just another number.
Speaker 19 (42:19):
Vicky, Yeah, that's that's Outo's number, my husband. So they
can call either number, Yeah, and we can. We can
take their information and we will get someone whether Otto
and I make the trip to meet up with people,
which we do, or we have volunteers all over that
would be happy to meet up and get someone a
ticket or too. We also aren't looking for distributors people
that want to say, hey, you know, send me a
(42:41):
dozen tickets. I'll help you, and we will. Definitely we
need that, we need help. So if anyone is interested
in helping us, that's always a great thing. But nonetheless,
we'll have tickets at the Ice Show, but we will
be drawing a three pm on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
Okay, well, thanks for all that info. We'll try to
hopefully find you a few more outlets for tickets, so folks,
something you might not want to pass up. For fifty bucks,
that's a pretty cool price. Fourteen thousand dollars. And remember,
somebody's got to win, Vicky. If a veteran wants to
get a hold of you, what number do they use
to you or so on?
Speaker 19 (43:19):
Either the number on the ad of finance, Auto's number
most people call him direct. Also, we're on Facebook, so
I have people watch us on Facebook. We have a
very active Facebook page, and our number and all of
our information is also there.
Speaker 1 (43:34):
All right, thanks for all you do for veterans of Wisconsin, Vicky,
and we'll see at the show.
Speaker 19 (43:40):
Well, it's our pleasure and thank you you guys. Have
a great day.
Speaker 1 (43:43):
Hey, thanks Auto and VICKI from Wounded Warriors Raffle. Need
to remind folks worth the Wisconsin Ice Expo up here
and full lineup of vendors available. I was just running
through the vendor list and there is about everyone here
that you would need as far as gear, you'd like
to book a guided trip vendors for poles, gear, hubshacks
(44:08):
and the prices are very good, plus a full lineup
of seminar speakers. So don Kirby's gonna join us. We're
gonna kind of mop up the show after our sponsor
break Donald do a little overview. Kids are free ticket
prices we'll talk about at the end of the show,
So stay with us, folks.
Speaker 20 (44:26):

Hey, Welcome back, folks. Our next guest is Don Kirby.
Don is going to discuss the twenty twenty four Wisconsin
Ice Fishing Expo at the EAA and Oshkosh, Wisconsin and
kind of do an overview of this wonderful three day
show December thirteen, fourteen and fifteen, and Don helps run
the show and help sell the booths and over one
(47:48):
hundred and seventy booths available, so pretty amazing. Come on
out and learn a ton about ice fishing. Joining us
next is a great outdoorsman. Don loves spending time outdoor
and doesn't mind waking up in the marsh. He enjoys
hunting ducks and geese, turkeys and whitetail deer, and fishing
for bass and big wall Don also works for Bess
(48:09):
Durban Advertising, which has a great team of creative marketers
that live for the outdoors. Don Kirby, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 7 (48:17):
Hey, thanks very much. I'm glad to be here.
Speaker 4 (48:21):
Yeahn have you been waterfowl hunting lately? And how's this
season going so far?
Speaker 7 (48:26):
Yeah? You know, we try to get out several times
a week. Earlier this fall, you know, we had that
long stretch of dry, kind of warmish weather that makes
it a little tricky for duck hunting. But managed to
find a few cans and got on the wood ducks
pretty good early in the season. So yeah, it's been
a good fall so far. I've got a brand new
pup and so we're starting to break him in a
(48:47):
little bit. So yeah, it's always a good time.
Speaker 3 (48:51):
What kind of dog did you get?
Speaker 7 (48:53):
I got a yellow Lab, but he's got that kind
of interesting fox red tint to him, so a lot
of times people mistake him for a golden when we're
cruising around. He's a pretty handsome young man.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
Nice. I love labs.
Speaker 4 (49:08):
Kate and I have had seven labs so far. They
are such a good house dog and great hunting dogs.
Speaker 3 (49:13):
Aren't they?
Speaker 7 (49:14):
Oh? Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 9 (49:17):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (49:18):
Don Now you're very involved as an account executive and
help run several outdoor exposts. Which ones do you help organize?
Speaker 7 (49:26):
Well, So, our team owns and operates the Wisconsin Fishing
ex Bole that happens in Madison at the end of
February every year for many years, as a matter of fact,
coming up on our fortieth anniversary. And then of course
we also assist the Wisconsin Waterfall Association and help them
run their Waterfall Hunters Expole that happens at the end
of August in Oshkosh. And now coming up here next,
(49:50):
we've got the second edition of our new Wisconsin Ice
Fishing ex Bole that'll be also an Oshkosh, but we've
moved it down the road a couple of miles to
the EAA ground.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
Well, we were there last year.
Speaker 4 (50:03):
I believe we had like six boats or something for
a Wilderness fish game. That thing was incredible. There are
so many people in there and they're all buying gear
like crazy. That was really one of the best shows
I've ever attended.
Speaker 7 (50:16):
It was pretty nuts right out of the gate, and
you know, of course we're super excited. Great a perfect example.
While you know Wilderness is one of the vendors that
is a great partner to us, and like so many others,
they've more than doubled their space for this year. We
last year indoor and outdoor displays, we had about thirty
(50:36):
seven thousand square feet. This year we have fifty eight
thousand square feet just indoors in a single giant airplane
hangar down on the EAA grounds, which allowed all of
our existing partners, if they chose to, to become dramatically larger,
and then we were able to add a whole bunch
of additional vendors as well.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
Well.
Speaker 4 (50:57):
I got to tell you that Don is extremely organized
and really fun and if you are into ice fishing
at any level, you can find stuff there that you
won't find at other places.
Speaker 7 (51:09):
Yeah, you know, it's almost like we sort of build
a mall, right, we build an outdoor shopping mall for
three days that then kind of disappears like a mirage
after we're done. But you're absolutely right, Wally. I mean,
from some of the biggest manufacturers in the ice fishing industry,
all of the big names that you would think of, Eskimo,
clam Otter, but the other really neat thing that I
(51:31):
like about these shows is that you have these small
entrepreneurial exhibits where you might not be able to see
those folks anywhere else, you know, unless you really surf
the inner webs, or in some cases these folks are
so small that they don't really even have a web
presence online, and so the only way you can experience
them is to come to a live event like this,
(51:52):
and that makes for a really great mix. If folks
are interested in ice fishing at all, whether you're you know,
an old hand or you're just interested in maybe giving
it a try, an event like this one upcoming next month,
I think is going to be a great opportunity for
a lot of folks.
Speaker 3 (52:07):
Our guest today is Don Kirby.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
We're discussing the twenty twenty four Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo
coming up soon.
Speaker 3 (52:14):
What are the dates of the event?
Speaker 7 (52:17):
So they this year we start out on Friday the thirteenth,
I'm gonna assume that'll be lucky, not unlucky, and then
Saturday the fourteenth and Sunday the fifteenth.
Speaker 4 (52:27):
Okay, And it's going to be at the EAA Center
in Oshkotch, which has really good parking and a lot
of space there correct.
Speaker 7 (52:35):
Oh, yeah, it's really tremendous. You know. This last July
they ran six hundred and seventy five thousand people through
this venue over the course of nine days for air
Venture and so by partnering with their teams both for entry,
you know, ticketing, parking, these folks are very much used
to dealing with fifty sixty thousand people a day. So
(52:57):
we think we'll have taken care of all of the
you know, slowdowns and whatnot that we may be experiencing
our first year. We should be ready to rock at
this new venue.
Speaker 4 (53:06):
Fantastic. I'm excited about it. And how can people learn more?
Do you have a website?
Speaker 1 (53:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (53:12):
Absolutely, that's probably the best way you can jump in
and see the whole thing. Come together at icefishexpo dot
com or of course we're on Facebook and we'll post
all the latest updates there and you know, I would
encourage people. There's advanced ticketing available in there. You can
see the entire seminar listing. We have an incredible lineup
of speakers again as well as the complete map of
(53:33):
the venue and all the vendors are listed there as well.
Speaker 3 (53:38):
Well.
Speaker 4 (53:38):
Don look forward to seeing you there and thanks for
joining us this morning.
Speaker 7 (53:42):
Yeah, thanks so much. It was great to talk to you, Wali.
Speaker 4 (53:45):
Thanks for stay in tune with us. We're up at
the EAA Rounds for the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo. Amazing
show captain anything in ice fishing world you can find
up here at this show.
Speaker 1 (53:59):
Well, we hope everyone enjoyed. Our list of guests is
just a little kind of a little teaser as to
what's up here at the Ice ex Bowl. But really,
if you're into fishing and what I like, Wally is
guys can get up here and rub elbows with the
with the vendors. And want to mention that the show
hours are, let's see Saturday nine to seven, Sunday nine
(54:24):
to four. This is started on Friday, and obviously we're
here all weekend. And some ticket prices. I did see
that kids are getting in free, which is which is
really nice. I see there's a discount for veterans. So otherwise, Wally,
(54:45):
good place to just talk ice fishing in the dead
of winter.
Speaker 4 (54:50):
Yeah, and there's some great sale prices from the vendors,
great deals to be had. There's a live troupe onund
if you want to bring your kids out kids twelve
and under a free there's plenty of prizes there. Greg
kart shall be doing a nice event for kids. So
it's really a family event out here at the Wisconsin
Ice Fishing Expo.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Yeah, and well, you know there's a lot of places
to ice fish. You talk Green Bay, North Dakota, you know,
Lake of the Woods, the Madison Chain has really come
to light as far as ice fishing. And the neat
thing is you can stop in there and talk to people.
There's a lot of package discounts at these resorts and stuff,
(55:33):
and I mean you can either just use their lodging
fish on your own. You know, if you want to
fish out of a snow bear, that's a pretty neat
experience if you've never fished out of a snowbear. And
what's neat about these It's a good family it's the
best thing to do for a family because you got
guides available. The snow bears are warm, so it's a
(55:53):
good place. Otherwise, Wally coming up in the future for
us is going to be upcoming shows. You and I
are gonna be doing the Musky the Milwaukee Musky Expo.
Talking about what's happening there. Here's Springs just around the corner,
and also the Wisconsin Fishing expos So I'd like to
thank you for spending a Saturday morning with the Ultimate
(56:13):
Outdoors radio crew.
Speaker 4 (56:16):
Make sure you get those kids outdoors and get those
dogs off the couch.
