quest to bring the outdoors to.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
You once again.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors, the Captain and the
Wall Dog.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Good Saturday morning. This is Wally the wall Dog Bampy,
along with Captain Terry Fry. Happy holidays, Captain.

Speaker 5 (00:58):
Hey, Happy holidays, Mary, Christmas.

Speaker 6 (01:00):
See Wally everyone out there in the snowy world of Wisconsin.
I guess we need snow if it's going to be cold.
And I hope you are all enjoying family Christmas coming
up here. So it's always always good to eat and
drink a little Wally.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
But it's nice nice having a white Christmas too.

Speaker 5 (01:23):
Yeah, it kind of is.

Speaker 6 (01:25):
But coming up, we're gonna talk a little bit about
ice fishing, because that seems to be pretty hot everywhere.

Speaker 5 (01:31):
Pat Westburg's going to join us.

Speaker 6 (01:33):
Pat is a local fishing guide and talk ice fishing,
ice safety. And then we're gonna have some gift ideas
from Chuck Polly at Middleton Ford. And you know, if
you really want to make some points, that new car
or a truck for the wife or husband probably would
guarantee you a hunting trip or vice versa.

Speaker 5 (01:52):
A trip to a beach wally. So there you go.
We'll talk with Chuck see what he's got up his sleeve.
But otherwise we have a gearhead for.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Our Now which time for the Ultimate gear Heads. This
week's gearhead segment it's fallowed by Middleton Ford, Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate Gearheads check it out. They will set
you straight.

Speaker 6 (02:18):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton Ford sticker. Maybe
an idea is you could.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
Get your husband or wife's car.

Speaker 6 (02:25):
Detailed and also safety wise tires, batteries, everything at Middleton
Ford Wally.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Hey, Captain. This week's really cool piece of gear is
used while ice fishing. It's the Finnikey Fuller Tip up.
The Finnikey Fuller's design allows the use of any length
rot in real combo while ice fishing. The unique design
allows the angler to vary the degrees of resistance settings,
which allows you to target multiple fish species with one
simple device. The Finnikey Fuller is made for open bail fishing,

(02:54):
which allows the fish to free spool in the line,
making it deadly on finicky fish like walleye. Crappie trout
and many other species. The finnicky fuller captain sells for
around thirty two bucks.

Speaker 5 (03:07):
There you go.

Speaker 6 (03:07):
And speaking of ice, a little mop up on the
Wisconsin Ice Fishing ex Bowl. I talked to Dan Durbin.
Here's a couple of things that he mentioned that the
vendors actually want more space. A few of the neat
little items they had this year was heated shovel Heated shovels, yeah,
heated shuttles. And they actually timed the entrance time for

(03:30):
visitors which averaged seven minutes compared to like thirty to
ninety minutes last year. So the EAA grounds was a
fantastic move over there. Also, there was ten thousand dollars
given away in free product, hundreds of thousands of dollars
generated for tourism in the area. And Wally, I never

(03:52):
heard who won that ice castle rig, did you?

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Yep?

Speaker 4 (03:56):
I actually spent fifty dollars on a ticket because it's
a good cause. But a woman in the area won
that thing. It was a fourteen thousand dollars prize. It
was really a cool ice castle with the wounded warriors
raising money for needy and what a great show, Captain,
it was really fun.

Speaker 6 (04:14):
Okay, yeah, I mean good reports coming out of their
big time. So otherwise, Wally, I just got back from
an l cunning trip which I'm not going to get
into right now because of time, and it's our Christmas
show and we want to thank all our sponsors. But
I'll talk about that next week. Long story short, as
we missed the migration.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
By two weeks. They went early to Utah this year.
Thousands and thousands of.

Speaker 6 (04:41):
Animals migrated in a few days because of snowstorms. But
I'll touch on that next week. Anything else you.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Got, Wally, Yeah, I got a couple cool events coming up, Captain.
The twenty fifth Annual Marshall Llons Ice Fishery Festival will
be held January seventeenth and eighteenth at the fire Park
heated Shelter in Marshall, Wisconsin with a ton of great
activities plan and also the Stoughton Conservation Club will be
hosting their sixty second annual Ice Fish Reach January twenty fifth,

(05:12):
from midnight to four pm on Lake ky Ganza. Headquarters
is at Springers on Lake Kyganza. First place grand prize
is a new Playerist Sportsman ATV Wow.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
The nein thing Wally is we got ice for all
these events?

Speaker 7 (05:27):
A what A.

Speaker 6 (05:28):
I call it a lifesaver because people itching to get
out and I think the ice is making ice quick
enough where it's ensuring some more safety, but still people
have to be aware of walking out there. Coming up,
we are going to talk with Pat Westburg Ice little ice, fishing,
ice safety.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
He is a great guide here in the air. Stay
with us.

is a great outdoorsman. Pat is a fishing guide and
he guides for ice fishing and open water fishing. He

(08:09):
owns PW Fishing LLC, does fishing seminars and Bill's custom
ice rods. Pat Westberg, Welcome to the show.

Speaker 9 (08:18):
Hey, thanks a lot for having me dog. I really
appreciate it. And hey, the carry also.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
That over the years, I've been lucky to get to
fish with you both on and off the ice, and
we've had some fantastic trips. Remind our listeners a little
about safety when going out ice fishing.

Speaker 9 (08:36):
Okay, well, you know, first and foremost of first thing
I always carry with me are the picks of life,
and you always want to make sure you have those
with you and hopefully you never have to use them,
but you always want to make sure that they're on
you and not in the slab that you're dragging behind you,
because when you need them, you're gonna need them now.

(08:58):
I also carry one of those throwbags with me. I
Beleeve Clam make sos and they have fifty or seventy
five foot of rope in them, and if someone goes in,
you can toss it to them and get them out.
They they'll help you get out of trouble real fast too.
And then I always am wearing one of those auto

(09:20):
inflatable life vests. You know, when you're out on Cherokee
and it's only two foot of water, it's not that
big of a deal. But if you're out on the
main lake, you're gonna be really happy that you are
wearing one if you do go in and the waters
over your head.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
Good tips, Pat, Now you make some really cool custom
ice rods. I have a couple of them. Tell us
about them.

Speaker 9 (09:44):
Yeah, kind of out of necessity. I just started fixing
my own, my own fishing rods and tinkering with spring
bobbers and whatnot, and it grew from there. You know,
locally in Madison, we use a lot of long rods
and what I call walk around rods because we're fishing
you know, Cherokee and Monona Bay, and it's just easier

(10:07):
to you know, just lift up and walk to another
hole and then you know, drop back down. So a
lot of the big box you know, rod builders don't
don't make an option that is available for you. So
I know that pad over at DNS has got a
guy building long rods for him, the the pulsator fishing rod,

(10:30):
which I believe is made right in Sox City, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
Dog, Yes, I got one of those. Two are great.

Speaker 9 (10:36):
Yeah, that's a good option. That's a line through through
the blank rod. And I can also custom build rods,
you know, to the to the length you want or
the kind of handle or spring bobber that you know,
you can kind of choose your colors and stuff like that.
So there's a lot of good options available.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Well, pet, when you're rigging up for shallow bluegills, give
us a couple of tips on how you rig what
type of line you used, so on.

Speaker 9 (11:07):
Okay, you know, for for pan fishing, I only use
the inline reels. I will not use the spinning reel
whatsoever because of line twist. Okay, I'll use those those
regular fly reels, those those old schools, those slaters in
those schoolies, I kind of call them. There the cane

(11:29):
pole reels and the the inline direct drive reels or
a good option. There's no line twist and there that
that's very important. To make sure that your jig is
not spinning at all.

Speaker 5 (11:48):
Good.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
You use a lot of plastics too, What kind of
colors do you like as far as plastics, Yeah.

Speaker 9 (11:55):
I'm using I use a lot of the pan Fish plastics.
Chugar Fry and those guys are out of clam Lake
and Terry's Pinpoint Plastics in He's out of Bentley, which
is up by Stevens Point. I use a lot of
their products are both family, family run operations. I use

(12:17):
a lot of translucent colors. I don't like the solid
color other than the solid fire engine red I call
it for blue gills.

Speaker 10 (12:28):
You know.

Speaker 9 (12:29):
I always have an assortment of plastics that I'm using,
and I'm rotating the black, the blues, any kind of blue,
the motor oils, the reds, and the purples, and every
once in a while I'll mix of pink and they're
also But I do like the translucent ones kind of

(12:50):
are they're more see through and they kind of they
kind of mimic a zoo plank and they're a shrimp
or whatever those fish are eating there. It's a little
more natural looking for them. But in the in the
darker in darker water, sometimes I do go to the
Solid colors.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
Also, folks, we've been talking with Pat Westburg who's a
guide and he's available for ice fishing or open water fishing.
Het How can people reach you for a guided fishing trip.

Speaker 9 (13:22):
I'll give you my cell phone number and that's six
zero eight five seven five four seven five times.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
Pat.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Thanks for joining us and look forward to fishing with
you this winter.

Speaker 9 (13:36):

Speaker 5 (15:39):
Well yeah, well you.

Speaker 6 (15:41):
Know, I thought I might have you on and for
the husband wife that my might want to make a
whole bunch of points for Christmas. There's always the idea
of a trucker car purchase. So what's happening on the
automotive seen, Will, We haven't talked for a while.

Speaker 10 (15:59):
This is a very busy time of the year for us,
and we anticipate going into this time of year as
being you know, busy. So we're stocked up on pre
owned inventory. We got a lot of certified pre owned
as well, and we we got a nice selection of
new inventory as well. So for anyone out there that's

(16:19):
looking for, you know, a deal on a vehicle, you know,
swing by and stop buy and see what we have.

Speaker 6 (16:25):
Yeah, and well you mentioned pre owned, and a lot
of a lot of people are looking at pre owned
and that's that's always nice to have some inventory you're
taking trades throughout the year, but also you can help people,
uh you know, go down the road of financing. You
have quite a few banks you deal with, so people

(16:47):
can actually get help right there at the shop.

Speaker 10 (16:51):
Yep, yep. We make it. We street and streamline the
process to make it really easy for everyone. And you know,
if anyone's looking for a specific pre owned vehicle out there,
you know that's not for you know, we have inventory
of other makes and models too, and we have the
ability to you know, go out in other various regions

(17:12):
and find that specific car. You know, if it's like
a needle in a haystacked ideal, we we can find it.

Speaker 5 (17:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (17:18):
And also a good stocking stuff for an oil change.
That's always nice to get a certificate for that. Which
and also besides oil change, you guys can do tires
and all sorts of good stuff. But also you have
you recently opened up in the last two years, I
believe it was Middleton Motor Sports. What do you guys

(17:39):
offer there for the consumer?

Speaker 10 (17:40):
Will Yeah, Well, you know, we we have a performance
shop located here and whether you're looking to you know,
upgrade your car's performance or accessories, we can do it.
You know, we work with tuning vehicles, different suspension and
you know, we get into all of the components and

(18:02):
U this time of this time of year, you know,
even though it's you know, the roads are bad, you know,
salts out there and everything. Uh, it's still busy for us.
And we go and we actually have a trailer that
we go out and pick up vehicles for, you know,
to get work done in the shop.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
With nice And you also even have a dinal machine.
I see you installed in there.

Speaker 10 (18:26):
Yep, yep, we got a dinal machine here too. So
throughout throughout the day and you know a week, if
we're tuning in to work on vehicles, you'll always be
hearing you know, the loud louder Indians you know, throughout
throughout the store. But it's it's fun hearing what's in
the shop on a daily basis.

Speaker 6 (18:45):
Yeah, and that's that's for sure. And you know, basically,
if I want to bring my truck and you can
make it go one hundred and eighty miles an hour, right.

Speaker 10 (18:54):
We we can make anything happen.

Speaker 6 (18:56):
Terry, Yeah, Hey, Middleton Outdoors got a couple of minutes left.
You guys recently opened up Middleton Outdoors right there at
in your shop in Madison, And what do you guys
have You have a bunch of outdoor gear which would
make great Christmas ideas stuffers or just some really nice gifts.

Speaker 10 (19:15):

for all the golfers out there. We got some rangefinders too,
you know, hoodies, shirts, vortex gear, and we also have
some fishing rods, some Saint Croix rods and some ice
fishing poles too.

Speaker 5 (19:37):
Yeah, and I see you have some.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
I would just probably go to your Facebook page or
give a call. I know there's some discounts, good discounts
on Vortex products, but kind of interesting that they came
out with one for the golfer because you know, knowing
your range, I don't care what you're doing. I just
got back from out West and you there's various you know,
binoc with range finders in them. That's one of them

(20:03):
I have. Plus we also have the small pocket size,
so it's it's nice to know the yardage whether you're
hunting whatever you're doing, golfing and also fishing rods available,
Saint Croix that correct, will yep, yep, that's correct? Okay, great,
and also some accessories but good place to if you're

(20:25):
getting an oil change, getting your car service, you can
look at some outdoor equipment and so on. What's anything
new coming for twenty twenty five before we let you go,
will just the.

Speaker 10 (20:36):
New product changeover or new product years that the twenty
five are gonna be coming out soon. And for anyone
out there that's looking to get an oil change, you
know within the area, you can give us a call.
We offer a pickup and delivery service as well. So

easy for everyone. I know how big everyone's schedule is
