Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're on board with Ultimate Outdoors.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Radio, a quest to bring the outdoors to.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
You once again.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Our resident guides to the outdoors the Captain.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
And the Wall Dog. Hey Good Saturday morning. This is
Wally the Wall Dog, vamping along with Captain Terry Friday morning.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
Captain Hey Good, Saturday morning, everyone the outdoor world. Hope
you survived our opening gun season and spent time with family.
Ate a lot, shot a lot. We'll talk a little
bit about some of the deer reports, but obviously there's
still more seasons to come here in Wisconsin, so it

(00:56):
gives you a chance to get back out. But today's show,
it's all about out the Wisconsin Ice ex Bow up
in Oshkosh coming. We're going to talk with Jim Cassuda.
He is a panfish guru on local lakes here, and
we'll see what Jim has to say. We haven't talked
to him for a year or two. And then a
pretty neat deal going on up with the ice Expo

(01:18):
is going to be the Wounded Warriors Raffle, and they're
basically giving away one of these ice houses and a
whole bunch of gear. You basically buy a fifty dollars
ticket and you can actually do a search and call
them to purchase a ticket beforehand. But I think the
price pack is valued at fourteen thousand dollars, so might

(01:40):
be the best fifty dollars you probably ever spent. So
we'll be chatting all about it, and we're making some ice.
That's good news. People are actually out in places. Her
Devil's Lake has five to eight inches on backwater. So
otherwise every week we get to talk about gear.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Now, which time for the Ultimate gear Heads. This week's
gearhead segment. It's followed by Middleton Ford, Middleton, Wisconsin. Hey,
before you start spending all your money on outdoor gear,
have the Ultimate gearheads check it out. They will set
you straight.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
Hey, folks, you don't see that Middleton forward sticker. You
pay too much. Good time to get in there and
get your vehicle win aw eyes, get your wife's vehicle
in there versus breaking down. One of my hot tips
that I now carry is what they call a jump pack.
You get a dead battery. I actually had to use
it on my ATV the night I got the opening

(02:33):
four opening day. Some reason, my battery went dead on
the ATV. The jump pack saved us. Otherwise we wouldn't
have had it, But that's something good piece of gear
to carry in a car. Wally.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
And this week's really cool piece of gears made by
Vortex Optics. It's the Banshee Model Performance sunglasses. The Vortex
Banshee bridges the gap between tactical eyewear and uncomfortable safety glasses.
They use shatter resistant lenses, stick rated materials, anti scratch coating,
polarized lenses, and have Vortex lifetime VIP warranty. Both shooters

(03:07):
and anglers will love these sunglasses, Captain. They sell for
around one hundred and twenty nine bucks.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Yeah, they're nice when your crossbowl blows up wall and
you have some eye protection safety glasses, or your boot
slips out of the stirrup and it flies up and
hits you in the crotch and then goes in the cornfield.
That's what happened to me. One time.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
I've got a little mentioned, Captain regarding a great event,
a feel good event. It was the Deer Hunter Breakfast
that was held at I thirty nine Supply and Portage Friday,
November twenty second. This was the eighth annual breakfast and
what started as a great idea is now huge. I
spoke with Peter Ton, one of the owners of I
thirty nine Supply. He said over twelve hundred people attended.

(03:50):
They ate over three thousand eggs and three hundred and
eighty pounds of bacon, along with lots of other good
food and drink. Twenty five thousand dollars was raised for
their charity called Empowered dream Hunts based out Emosani, Wisconsin
and real quickly Empowdered dream Hunts is a nonprofit organization
that help individuals with challenges, disabilities or illness so they

(04:11):
have an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. So they
have an action track chair for those individuals who need one. Captain.
It's really fun to be a part of that.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Yeah, there's a lot of great groups doing these fundraisers. Otherwise,
jumping back to deer season, don't have any total numbers yet,
but they they're saying Wisconsin den are They registered eighty
nine thousand, two hundred deer during the opening weekend, which
was down about two percent there was all. It was

(04:41):
actually about almost five percent below the five year average.
Doe harvest was up a little bit, but eric word
on the street Wally is these once again with this
late opener. A lot of these deer were not moving.
I think they're just run down the dos and the
bucks and they're laying up until they have to feed
at night. And a lot of guys were very successful

(05:03):
hunting cornfields. That was how they harvested their deer.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
I would agree. And a lot of times those deer
weren't moving to like four PM and then they'd start
come out in those fields to feed, but all day
they were kind of laying around. You almost had to
have someone on stand and then walk around and try
to bump the deer out to get a movie.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
While here's an interesting fact we haven't talked about. It
was the Wisconsin bear harvest. The twenty twenty four black
bear harvest was four and eighty five animals during the
five week season, and that was quite an increase from
twenty twenty three of only two nine and twenty two bears.

(05:46):
That tells you how many bear are in the state.
And once again we talk about predation on wildlife. Between
that and wolves, bears stay pretty busy. So whially jimkis
what is going to join us our first guest and
then wounded warriors up at the Wisconsin Ice ex quote.

Speaker 5 (06:10):

dot com. Joining us next is Asian. Jim has iced
many many beautiful perch and big blue gils and earned
the nickname of Mendota Jim many years ago after his
success on Big Lake. Mendota Jim pro staffs for clam
and is a member of the clam Ice Team. Jim
also is an expert on Vexlar products and he pro
staffs for Vexlar also. Jim Cassuda, Welcome to the show.

Speaker 7 (08:54):
Hi Wally, good morning.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Well thanks for joining us, Jim, And what's new with
Vexlar and what units do you like to use?

Speaker 7 (09:03):
Well, the big news is they have a new vex
FLX thirty eight and it's mounted on a pro pac
elite and so both of those two items come together
and it's all new. We all got hit three years
ago with the Flex thirty broadbrand. Now they have the
Flex thirty eight. And then the other thing.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
That one have is yeah, go ahead, and it has
a zoom feature right that you can move around so
you can really tie your small jig correct.

Speaker 7 (09:34):
It's called manual zoom and sweat. A variable window that
can be either six, twelve or eighteen feet, and if
you want to do it like normal, it's always the
bottom enlarge, but you can also move it around if
you have suspended fish and you want to really zero
in on a certain height for suspended fish. And of

(09:58):
course it's a broadband transducer, so it has variable frequencies.
And that's the beauty of these FLX thirty eights and
the thirty And I haven't run the thirty eight yet,
so I have to really kind of, you know, don't
get overly specific until I really get some ice time.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
Speaking of ice time, the twenty twenty four Wisconsin Ice
Fish Fishing expos coming up soon. When and where will
it be held?

Speaker 7 (10:27):
Yeah, the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo December thirteenth through fifteenth.
And last year, for all you guys that went, there
was at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh, and that
was a great event, but it was terrible as far
as parking and admission, and I heard there was cars
backed all the way up like a mile to Highway

(10:48):
forty one. So this year it's at the EAA Grounds
Experimental Aircraft Grounds in Oshkosh and that's right near Highway
forty one and so I come up from and it's
like my first exit there. But they're supposed to be
really good parking twice as big of a hall. So

(11:08):
we're really looking forward to having it at the EAA
this year.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Well, last year's show was amazing. Over fifteen thousand people
went and it was incredibly busy, but you're right, it
took like an hour and fifteen minutes sometimes to get
in the show. It just tells you people love the
ice Fish. They want to see the new gear and
their specialty items that you might not see anywhere else
at the show.

Speaker 8 (11:32):
For sure.

Speaker 7 (11:33):
And I'll be working the Vexlar booth. And last year,
for all you guys that came to Ashcash, we were
the first booth on the right as he came in,
which was like super prime. But this year we were
right dead smack in the middle booth three fourteen and
three sixteen and that's the Vexlar K Drill booth. So
I'll be there. And the other product that Vexler has

(11:54):
and I'm really excited and I'm going to get is
the fish Scout camera. They have two models of base Camp,
which is for all you guys that have permanent fish
houses and you hook HDMI to a large screen TV.
But the Predator is the one I really want to get,
and that's got to all self contained SD card slot,

(12:15):
built in lithium ion battery. Know this heavy SLA seal
let as it's just awesome modern I need to have it.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
It's like me when new stuff comes out, you really
want to try it and you want to have it. Jim,
I know you'll be speaking at the Ice Fishing Expo.
What's your topic going to be.

Speaker 7 (12:37):
I'm going to talk about shallow water bluegills and for
all of you guys at fish and Southern Wisconsin. Man,
oh man, that's us. We're the pan fish masters when
it comes to bluegill. We use inline rids like pulsators,
and we also have different technicals like I mentioned using
underwater cameras and there's some stuff that I want to

(13:01):
talk about as far as using field eye jig. It's
just going to be a great seminar. I'm really excited
because people are really pumped up. We've been waiting and
waiting and we've had two really sketchy seasons, so this
season's gonna be good.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Oh you mentioned the pulsator rods. I have a forty
eight inch one and that's the road where the line
goes through the blank and they're super sensitive and when
it's cold out they don't freeze up either. They're nice
to work with, aren't they right.

Speaker 7 (13:29):
You don't reel up your line, you just set it
and now you're presenting the line without adding any curl
or coil, and you're just working the same vertical piece
of line. You're a little taller than me, Wally, I
use a forty two inch.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
Well, Jim, thanks for joining us, and I'll do my
best to watch your seminar. We'll be up there in
ash Gosh at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo December thirteen,
fourteen and fifteen. So Jim, thanks for taking time out
and joining us for sure, And.

Speaker 7 (13:59):
If anyone here's me up, I'll give them a backslier
thro coupone code for off the website.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Fantastic thirty five.

Speaker 7 (14:08):
Thanks Jim, yep, thanks Wally, thanks for calling me.

Speaker 3 (14:13):

Speaker 4 (16:00):
In Ultimate Outdoors Radio, we're going to talk with Vicky
Reads and Vicky is with Wounded Warriors of Wisconsin. We're
going to talk a little bit about that group. And
also we're gonna we have an announcement that for the
Wisconsin Ice Fishing Expo, Vicky is heading up the Raffle
which they're giving away a fourteen thousand dollars ice fishing shack.

(16:24):
I call it well, good mar and.

Speaker 12 (16:25):
Vicky, good morning, how are you good?

Speaker 4 (16:29):
Well, Vicky, let's kick this off before we get into
the raffle. Let's let's talk about Wounded Warriors of Wisconsin
and what you do sure.

Speaker 12 (16:38):
Our organization is called Wounded Warriors United of Wisconsin and
Otto and I are have based your organization out of Gleason.
We are an all volunteer organization serving only Wisconsin veterans.
Our core mission as we for the last ten years,
we take Wisconsin veterans hunting and fishing all around the
United States. We cover all the expenses. We also have

(17:00):
a retreat farm up in Gleason called Country Haven Farm.
It's a retreat where vets can come and hang out
for a weekend or up to a week with or
without their family, just to get away and escape the
life daily challenges.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
Wow, and so Vicky, does most of your support just
come from donations through people that want to help?

Speaker 12 (17:23):
Yes, we are not like these large national organizations. I
always say we're family run. We've got some dedicated staff
of volunteers, but we are all volunteering. We rely on
donations from people like you to support us through raffles,
through donations, through employee fundraisers, independent fundraising events. But that's

(17:45):
how we survive.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
Well, hats off to you because I think you know
we need to do as much as possible for our vets. So, Vicky,
let's jump over. You're going to be at the Wisconsin
Ice Fishing Expowl in Oshka in December at the EAA
field and you are heading up a giant raffle. So
do you want to tell us about this little ice

(18:07):
shack that people can win?

Speaker 12 (18:10):
This is outstanding. We are really excited about this. This
raffle is going on right now. It will culminate and
the drawing will be for this giant prize on Sunday
at the Ice Fishing Expo. It'll be on display. It's
an ice castle scout. Not only the scout but everything
you need the ice fish. It's going to have an augur,
a drill, a heater, jig rods, poles, fish finder, I

(18:33):
mean everything that you need, electric, mental buckets, flay knife,
so whatever you need the ice fish will be encased
in that ice castle scout. And the value on that
conservatively is over fourteen thousand dollars.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
Well, that's that's a pretty cool package. There will be
some screams up there at the show when they announce
that name, trust me, because so basically fifty dollars tickets each.
You want to tell us a little bit about people
can purchase their tickets.

Speaker 12 (19:03):
Yes, Wisconsin raffle license rules requires an in person exchange.
We can't sell tickets online or over the phone, but
we have volunteers all around the state that can meet
up with people that want to buy a ticket, and
all they have to do is call me at nine
two zero two zero three eight six nine two and
I can get them connected with someone who can meet

(19:25):
up to get them a ticket. We will obviously have
tickets available at the show, but our goal is to
sell six hundred tickets to help our budget and meet
our needs for next year. Rising costs of fuel and
guide fees and regulations. We're really in need of this
to be a very successful raffle.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
Well, that sounds like a really cool deal. Join me
a Dan Altimon Outdoors Radio. Vicky reats and Vicky is
with the Wounded Warriors United of Wisconsin. We're talking about
the ice Fishing Raffle happening at the Wisconsin Ice Fishing
Show and ash gosh, so on the advertisement here, I
see that there is a call for tickets number which

(20:07):
is nine two zero four seven zero eighteen forty five.
Is that just another number, Vicky?

Speaker 12 (20:12):
Yeah, that's my that's Auto's number, my husband. So they
can call either number, yeah, and we can. We can
take their information and we will get someone whether Otto
and I make the trip to meet up with people,
which we do, or we have volunteers all over that
would be happy to meet up and get someone a
ticket or too. We also aren't looking for distributors people
that want to say, hey, you know, send me a

(20:33):
dozen tickets. I'll help you, and we will. Definitely, we
need that, we need help, so if anyone is interested
in helping us, that's always a great thing. But nonetheless,
we'll have tickets at the Ice Show, but we will
be drawing three pm on Sunday.

Speaker 4 (20:50):
Okay, well, thanks for all that info. We'll try to
hopefully find you a few more outlets for tickets. So, folks,
something you might not want to pass up. For fifty bucks,
that's a pretty cool price. Fourteen thousand dollars. And remember,
somebody's got to win, Vicky. If a veteran wants to
get a hold of you, what number do they use
to you or so on.

Speaker 12 (21:12):
Either the number on the ad is fine, that's Auto's number.
Most people call him direct. Also, we're on Facebook, so
have people watch us on Facebook. We have a very
active Facebook page and our number and all of our
information is also there.

Speaker 4 (21:26):
All right, thanks for all you do for veterans of Wisconsin,
Vicky and we'll see at the show.

Speaker 12 (21:33):
Well, it's our pleasure and thank you you guys.

Speaker 4 (21:35):

Speaker 4 (24:24):
In this week's UDA, we're saying in Wisconsin, Grant County,
this fellow was fined ten thousand, four hundred dollars. This
is a very long story. If you want to hear more,
you're going to have to research it. It was it
was about a fellow that basically poached a trophy. Dear.
Some photos started circulating. He said he shot it with

(24:49):
the bow and arrow. The warden mentioned when he handed
the arrow to him that he had his doubts on
because there was no the broadhead condition looked pretty new
and there even was blood on the arrow. So anyway,
the wardens had him take him out to his stand
where supposedly the buck was shot, and so otherwise there is.

(25:15):
The case is still open. So I'm trying to figure
out how they're finding him ten thousand dollars. But we'll
see here. But it's a bizarre story. Again on another
one where wardens it would take a month to dissect
this case. And that's that's why we need twice the wardens.
We got so hats off that they are out there, Wally,

(25:38):
what else you got.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Well, we have a saying out there in the field.
If you see something, say something, somebody's violating, turn him in.
That's how the wardens get most of their cases started
and solid eventually. But it's time now for Dakota Sunset Resort.
As you mentioned earlier, Captain, out in Devil's Lake, North Dakota,
there's five to eight inches of ice in there, so

(26:01):
we got some cold weather coming through and it looks
like we're going to have a more normal ice season
this year.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Yeah, I'm guessing northern Wisconsin. They're probably I think they're
getting on some backwater areas up there with two three
inches of ice. But once again, we always preach safety.
And I'll tell you what. What makes a great Christmas
gift for anyone in your family are these float suits.
I originally have a clam float suit and still have it.

(26:28):
There's several other brands on the market, but I'll tell
you what.

Speaker 3 (26:31):
I even wear it.

Speaker 4 (26:32):
An open water when I'm in the boat because if
you go through, you might be the only one that
can save yourself. That and a pair of picks and
a rope nearby. But the float, the float jacket and
pants are the best thing you can get for a
family member.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
A fish with that clamsuit. Also in the late fall
out in the water, you know, it's comforting knowing that
if you fall in you could float. But I do
have a life jacket on as well, so Captain, you
can be too safe.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Yeah. Absolutely, And it's to the point I think, Wally,
where these duck hunters start to eat, they need to
start wearing some flotation if some of them don't, you know,
I was sitting at the cabin which overlooks the river.
Wally watching these duck hunters because they'd be out there
at two point thirty in the morning jocking for a
spot because the Northern flight did happen the last two weeks,

(27:23):
and there's some pretty big, you know, rafts of duck
sitting there. But I see some of the boats there
in you know, they all want to drive these green,
flat bottomed boats, but they aren't worth a hoot in
waves and water, like when the wind comes up the
Mississippi River and I watch them come downstream and it's
just like, oh man. But anyway, speaking of that, I

(27:45):
thought I'm gonna do a little search to see about
resc duck hunter rescues, because they're always oursome up in Minnesota.
They rescued several two different groups. Basically the boat capsize
from high winds on one of them, and the other
guy was basically stranded on an island getting hypothermia. So

(28:06):
you know, it's all about safety when you get out there,
because you do it enough, something's going to happen.

Speaker 7 (28:11):
Wally.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
Yeah, man, I don't know how many of those duck
hunters hunt alone, but it's good if you have a
buddy with you in case you get in trouble, you know, yeah,
traveling twos and make sure you have your cell phone
working charged up and on you too, because that could
save your life.

Speaker 4 (28:28):
Yeah. I also carry inReach device, which once you purchase
it only costs ten dollars a month, and that you
can be rescued anywhere in the world. Runs by satellite.
You just push the button and if you really want to,
you can message search and rescue with those. But it's
just the size of a walkie talkie hangs around your neck.
Once you have one, it's a pretty good feeling. Otherwise, Wally,

(28:49):
the Outdoor News Big Buck Contest, we need to mention
once more. Looks like you can enter before January sixth.
They have a toen a ton of pride here, muzzle loaders,
gun cases, shells, boots, ah even got a compound bow,
and a whole bunch of cents. So January sixth is

(29:10):
the deadline for that, Wally.

Speaker 3 (29:13):
Okay, well, I'm saving up some money to buy that
fifty dollars ticket for that wheelhouse that's gonna be given
away between December thirteenth and fifteenth at the Ice Wisconsin
Ice Fishing Expo in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. So save up a
little money and buy a ticket and try to win.
That's going for the boss.

Speaker 4 (29:31):
Well, the other great gift, and you and I talk
highly of it, is the Outdoor News. Give a buddy
an Outdoor News subscription because to me it's one of
the best outdoor papers in the country because it's just
down to earth, good interviews, good people. That makes a
really good you know, a little reading material with a whiskey.
So hey, thanks for spending another Saturday morning with the

(29:51):
ultimate outdoors radio

Speaker 3 (29:53):
Group that's just worldwide on Iheartened Radio.
