Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome into the Jay and K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper, joined by Nick Brucewitz. Wisconsin
keeps the winning ways going with a seventy five sixty
three win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. To can join
the conversation with us on the hotline. Six oh eight
three two, one thirteen ten. Well, it wasn't quite the

(00:21):
offensive output of the Iowa game. Wisconsin continued to shoot
the ball well tonight. John Blackwell led the way again.
Stephen Krowll had a double double, John ton Jay had
his best game in a couple of weeks, and Wisconsin
stole this show from the much ballyhooed Rutgers freshman Ace
Bailey and Dylan Harper, limiting Bailey to nine points and

(00:44):
Harper to zero. Now, granted, Harper was not playing at
one hundred percent in tonight's game, but with more than
a dozen NBA scouts in attendance, as Matt Lepey pointed
out in the pregame, Nick, the Badgers just showed out
and the shooting stayed hot.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, was interesting tonight for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Right.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
They started zero of seven from deep and then they
made their next five, right, So they balanced it out
quickly their slow start and then a hot stretch and
then in the second half it was a lot of
John Tanjay. But to your point, Dave, Wisconsin did not
spend a lot of time in a close game today,
and when Rutgers mounted a pretty substantial comeback, they didn't

(01:24):
allow them to get over the mountain. They allowed them
to get within two, but that didn't change things, and
Wisconsin was able to stay out in the lead play
their brand of basketball. They didn't have the same level
of success of getting to the free throw line tonight
as they've seen in the past, just six attempts, But
the reality was that the Badgers had a much more
experienced group, a deeper group, and a group that was

(01:46):
able to handle the challenge of going into a hostile
environment in Piscataway and pulling off their first true road
win since last January.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah, it was certainly a big win for them in
order to be able to to do that, because Rutgers
they mounted a couple of different uh comeback attempts to
get close in this one. And really for for Wisconsin
just being able to have that kind of experience and

(02:16):
and for Rutgers at home like this is in Piscataway
for them to come close within a couple of points
one or two times and Wisconsin being able to keep
them away.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
By and large, Wisconsin was able.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
To keep it a six point game or more for
for most of this and the Rutgers was able to
get it closer a couple of times, but Wisconsin, as
you mentioned, Nick, just kept pushing them away.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
And that was something that really that that that was
so crucial for them. And as Greg Guard kind of
pointed out as well, having those stops on defense, four
consecutive stops there and then and then Wisconsin being able
to hit their free throws that they get late in
the game, Uh, and being able to get points and
just kind of run away at the end and make

(02:58):
this a twelve point game. That that was something that
experience certainly helps them, especially since Rutgers led by a
couple of freshmen that they really didn't have no doubt.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
And I misspoke.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
The Badgers only allowed the Scarlet Knights to get within
three down the stretch, not two.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
I said two. It was three.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Come on, Nick, know that was a sixty. Where's the
Math Math Live? On the Math on the air, is
always rough. It's always sixty to fifty seven was the score.
I wanted to go back and double check. I thought
it was sixty to fifty eight.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Sixty to fifty seven was the score at that point,
and John Tanjay hit a three and then the Badgers
were off from there and it was another win for
Badgers group that's now twelve and three on the season,
two and two in the Big Ten.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah, absolutely huge, huge for them being able to put
up that kind of scoring output and being able to
get the wins going in the Big Ten. Because for Wisconsin,
they lost their first two games in Big Ten plays.
It's like, Okay, you're already kind of starting in a
hole down O two in conference play and now being

(04:05):
able to bounce back now that we're fully in conference
play for the rest of the season, being able to
bounce back get two wins here to start off January
and one here on the road and a very tough
place to play in Rutgers. That's that that's crucial for
them to have. Do we have someone on the hotline, Pat,

(04:26):
and Wakeshaw.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Is on the hotline. I've missed Pat.

Speaker 6 (04:28):
Pat.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
I know you've got to be thrilled with how things
have gone the last two games?

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Pat? How have you been my friend.

Speaker 6 (04:35):
Nick and Dave? Thanks for taking my call. I love
your show. A Happy New Year. I'm doing Happy New Year, Pat,
I'm doing it great. After when the aircraft carrier is steaming,
I can see the see the ship slamming against the water,
and boy, it's wintertime, baby, it's when your time. I

(05:01):
was laughing texting my brother, I I got that one in,
uh before raft did Nolan winter Man. I you know,
I don't want to say too much here, but uh,
I see another John Lure in the making. He's got
quite quite a game in siding out. And uh, I
love our back cuts. I just love our back cuts

(05:24):
in the passing. I hope Big Max is okay. I
I'm not gonna say that guy clipped his uh you know,
did anything tricky there with his foot, But that was
a that was a mean play. I think Max was
talking about it as he headed into the locker room.

(05:47):
And I hope Nolan sand is okay. I'm not sure
what happened there. I they were saying on TV that
he had a patch on his hand. But that's basketball.
You know, there's gonna be injuries. I just love this team.
I love Gardo, I love your post game show, and
I think we've got a lot of fun ahead for

(06:08):
Badger fans. It all happens in March, as you guys
well know, and it's gonna be it's gonna be fun
to watch. I'm really fired up. I love john Tanja,
I love I love Johnny Blackwell, I love Camari. I'd
love to know how much Camari can bench I'd love

(06:30):
to know how much he can bench press. I guess
maybe four fifty four fifty. I I didn't get to
call you guys after the Polar Bears fortieth birthday, but
you know, as you know, for some odd reason, I'm

(06:51):
gonna just leave it at that. We we don't get
the post game in the Milwaukee area anymore, so I'm
actually calling you there. And it thirteen ten in Madison,
and I was watching that game and it was so
much fun, you guys, to see Sharif the steamer, great steams,
my number thirty four, Crabby and shoot, I'm forgetting somebody.

(07:18):
There were four guys that got the pie in Polar
Bear's face.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Chamberless, Yeah, and I, of course, I of.

Speaker 6 (07:25):
Course, Oh Kirk Penny kirk Penny, baby, How can I
forget Kirk Penny from Australia, from down Under? It was
so much fun seeing those guys. I remember, I'm gonna
get choked up. I remember watching them all play and
it was just so much fun seeing him have fun
down on the court on Brian's fortieth birthday. So Cole

(07:46):
Padger's baby win it all.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah, there we go.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
There's Pat, There's Pat and Walkershaw. Yeah it was Yeah,
it was great watching the birthday celebration for Brian Butch
and dropping a John Lower comp on Nolan Winter.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Nick, Yeah, I like that comp right there.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
Well, it's a good comp, right, it's an all time
great for this program.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
If he can be.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
John Lewer two point zero, that would be great for
this team. And today you saw a lot of what
Nolan can do outside of shooting the ball.

Speaker 7 (08:15):
Right.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
He had two of three from the field, one of
two from deep for five points, but he had six rebounds,
he had an assist. His passing has been impressive. Wisconsin's
done a great job at developing their two big men,
Stephen Krow and Nolan Winter into great passers and it
showed once again.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Today absolutely and going back to the hotline. Now we
got Ed and Madison joining us and h Ed, how
are you feeling after tonight's win?

Speaker 7 (08:41):
Oh man, I'll just say to this, I just love
the whole team. I love the coaching, I like their
this This was a vintage Badger win from days of old.
Defense makes offense, offense makes more defense, and day basically

(09:01):
shut down a team that feel like they you're freshman, obviously,
but you have players that have been there, and I
think they've earned their earning nerve stripes right now, and
I think it's just gonna build and build and build.
Don't look for him to be in the top five,
but who cares? Just be in the mix? I mean,
how big is our division?

Speaker 6 (09:20):
Now?

Speaker 7 (09:21):
Top five, top six, top seventy, be pretty darn good?
And is there like eighteen teams?

Speaker 5 (09:26):
I lose track.

Speaker 7 (09:28):
But that being said, this team has just they're doing
everything that is the old vintage bo Ryan way. You
shut them down, you get free throws at the end,
you lock them down. And that's what I was having
reminiscent of watching this team. And we have some athletes.
We got some athletes this year that are playing together.

(09:50):
It's not a who's next who's up next? I like this,
This is fun to watch for all the naysayers, and
great guard can't recruit, he can coach because these this
team buys into his vision. So I like the naysayers
just to go go away and call up the show
for once and admit they're wrong. If you're nice, toy,

(10:12):
if you refreshing that some people come forward and say
I was wrong, it.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Would be Unfortunately that probably won't happen, but it won't.

Speaker 7 (10:21):
We have a sickle. I like that for a drop.
And it's true.

Speaker 6 (10:28):
There's a process.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
You hear, you hear.

Speaker 7 (10:33):
Jeez Heller. Heller talks about it all the time. There's
a process. You gotta you gotta be patient. And Nick
knows this because he hears Heller all the time. I do, yeah,
and you know what he says. And that's where a
lot of fans don't listen. I think a lot of
people got to take a step back and really understand

(10:53):
what this new age of basketball and football and everything,
with the new pre way of people coming and going,
it's not dedication. I see dedicated players on his team. Yeah,
that's what I see. Ooh. I just want to say,
go Badgers, keep it growing. Thank god they kicked Iowa
to the curb. I loved it. I love to see

(11:14):
the Silver Fox almost blow a gasket that game. I
didn't get to stay that last time. I wanted to,
but I hope we can keep it rolling. It's fun
to watch.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
Thanks guys, absolutely, thank you, ed Ed and Madison hopping
in on the hotline six of eight, three, two, one,

Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Brucewitz breaking down
this Badger's win over the rut Scarlett Knights seventy five
sixty three. If you'd like to join us on the hotline,

(13:05):
you can do so at six so weight three two
one thirteen ten and winning there right now is Mike
and Middleton. Mike, what are your thoughts after today's Badgers win?

Speaker 10 (13:15):
Good evening. I've been a season ticket holder for over
ten years. This team continues to impress me. This might
have been the most impressive win of the year, given
the fact that Klesmet and Winter both were out for
much of the second half. When the score got cut
down to three points, the Filestro was going crazy. I
thought for certain from that point on we were going

(13:36):
to go on and lose that game. That's shot by
Tanjay the Big Three to get it back to sixth
and then basically they never got much closer held them
off down the stretch. Unlike past years, this team, once
we get the bonus, I am super confidence. Once we
get the bonus with the lead, as long as we
can get to the line, we will hold on and win.
We obviously didn't get many bonus free throws tonight, but

(13:58):
we hit every one of our free throws pens clean
John Blackwell, who continues to play well beyond his years.
The jump he has made from freshman year to sophomore
year is similar to the one that Johnny Davis made.
I'm not saying he's as good as Davis, but I'm
just saying the improvement he's made just shows how well
this coaching staff helps develop certain players. Yes, there have

(14:20):
been some players over the years with did not get
much better. Wall did not get much better over the
four years. But Blackwell, thank god, it's been a saver
this year. Nolan Winter also made tremendous jump from last year.
I just hope both guys will stick around for next
year and hopefully their senior year, because if they do
the futures bright Kanye's gone after this year. And just

(14:40):
for your listeners, edification, aj Store, who's in Kansas is
only playing nineteen minutes the game for them and averaging
six point nine points the game and one point nine rebounds.
I never thought after losing Store we would find somebody
to replace him who is just as good. But John
Conjay is better on defense and he's a clo. He

(15:00):
wants that ball in the last minutes of the game,
and if he gets calved, he's gonna make all his
free throws.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Absolutely, Mike and Milton, thank you so much joining us
there on the hotline six I, eight, three, two, one,
thirteen ten, And yeah, I mean he brings up some
absolutely fantastic points there. John Blackwell just being able to
come through the way that he has this year, being
so impressive and kind of a Johnny Davis uh like
kind of kind of thing. Maybe not being as good, uh,

(15:27):
but still just being able to help lead this team.
And honestly too, As as I kind of mentioned earlier, Nick,
and as Matt Lapay mentioned in the pregame, there were
a lot of NBA scouts at this game. Now, they
were largely there for Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper, but
still Wisconsin. I mean, these guys know that, and they
could also be, you know, watching this game like, huh,

(15:48):
this John Blackwell guy's pretty good, and uh, they're they're
looking at him while they're in attendance, getting a pretty
good look. And John Blackwell gave a show. And he's
in his sophomore year. Johnny Davis was in his sophomore
year when he attracted the attention of NBA scouts.

Speaker 4 (16:02):
Who knows, Yeah, I'd make the argument that Blackwell is,
you know, the better passer for sure. Right, Johnny was
a great shooter. He was able to crash the boards, right,
And his final season at Wisconsin, Johnny averaged eight point
two rebounds per game in nineteen point seven points per game.
And that's just in addition to some of the other
counting stats. Two point one assists, one point two steals. Right,

(16:24):
So Johnny's a fantastic player and a player that you
could count on on a given night. That being said,
he made one point two threes per contest. They're shooting
at a much higher clip just three years later now,
But hey, if Johnny Blackwell, John Blackwell's in this conversation
with Johnny Davis that means good things for him.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Just spoke with Matt.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
Lapay earlier today on the Mike Heller Show. He spoke
to how highly he believes John Blackwell can be as
an overall player for this program. He had a great
first half tonight. Right, His impact in the first half
was very significant, thirteen points, and then he helped close
the game out and Todd in the second half with
thirteen points. Right, these are two guys so you can
count on at a given night to make the right

(17:05):
plays and potentially go on runs to put you in
a position to win.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Yeah, and that's what they have done these past couple
of games. As Wisconsin continues to win here with a
twelve point victory over Rutgers seventy five sixty three, and
as as they win, the facts get more fun about
each of these wins, and that means it's time for
our fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Hey, have you ever heard me?

Speaker 9 (17:30):
Here's the term of fun fact.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fact.

Speaker 9 (17:36):
You're a fun fact.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
I do. First time in history this has happened that
eight games five turnovers and he's recorded thirty five assists.
Spent a long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 9 (17:49):
The fun out here, this game's fun. Okay, I don't
know if that fact is fun.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Yeah, are you fired up? I'm fired up for fun
facts with Dave.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Right when the wins are there, the facts are a
whole lot more fun. And we've got a couple of
fun facts here, and one of them I'm just kind
of coming up here, coming up with you on the fly,
just kind of as a comparison. I thought about it
and started looking it up when Paton Waukeshaw mentioned it
earlier on the hotline. Comparing Nolan Winter to John Lure. Okay,

(18:25):
former Badger's great well, Nolan winters in his sophomore season,
John Lure in his sophomore season averaged eight point eight
points per game and averaged three point eight total rebounds
per game. Nolan Winter, here's a sophomore, is averaging eleven

(18:47):
points per game and averaging over six rebounds per game.
So statistically, Nolan Winter has been even better to this
point than John Lewer was. Now granted on, Lure put
up some much bigger numbers in his junior and senior season.
But still this is comparison.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
Yeah, yeah, and credit to Nolan. I mean, he's taken
the opportunity he's been afforded and ran with it.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
They really do like this.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
This action that they have with the bench where they
roll in both guys in the starting lineup, Winter and
Crowl and then they alternate the two of them greatly
for the majority of the rest of the game, where
they give each guy an opportunity to go for three
four minutes and then rotate in the next right, one
guy gets gassed, the other guy comes in, and Winter
can do both. He can play out at the perimeter
and he can play down in the post. At this

(19:38):
point in his career, he's more accustomed to being out
in the perimeter. He's got to build in that body
a little bit more. He's got to fill out as
time goes on. I think he's gonna be one of
the more dominant bigs in the Big ten if he
keeps on the trajectory that he's on. But as of
right now, he's a three point shooting big. And that's
where that comparison with Lewer kind of starts getting its legs.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Yeah, and just hopefully he will continue to develop from there.
Speaking of another one of the Badger big Stephen Krow,
ends up with a double double today, his first double
double of the season and the twelfth of his career.
So congratulations there for Stephen Crowell. Eighteen points, ten rebounds

(20:19):
for the big man in twenty five minutes. And finally
here on fun facts with Dave ssconsin, Badgers are on
pace for their highest three point field goal average ever
in program history. They're averaging over nine per game and
they have seven here tonight on twenty two attempts, but

(20:39):
still on pace for their highest amount of three pointers
per game ever and their highest scoring average since nineteen seventy.
So this is one of the best offensive outputs we've
ever seen in Badger basketball.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
So impressive, man, Right, We've seen this team go from
struggling to reach seventy on occasion to being its as
a baseline. Tonight was a down game. They had seventy
five points. It's just wild how the game has changed
and how Wisconsin's been able to adapt with it, and
they've got the right personnel. I mean, it takes a
special group to be able to flip that switch and

(21:15):
change an identity and Stephen Crowell is probably the only
guy that's seen it on both sides. A slow slugging
offense not too long ago to where it's at now.
A lot of high speed, a lot of high opportunity
games for Wisconsin. They took twenty two threes today. That
didn't necessarily feel like a guarantee in the past.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
No, it did not.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
But they were able to do what they what they
needed to to get out of Piscataway with a victory,
and Stephen Crowell was a big part of that. We're
going to talk about Stephen Crowell and all the other
big points from this game with Nick Osen from twenty
four to seven Sports. He's coming up on the other side.
That's going to be up next. Nick Burswitz, Dave Gasper

here alongside Nick Brucewitz joining you after this Badger's win
over Rutgers seventy five sixty three, And joining us now
on the hotline is Nick Osen from twenty four to

(23:03):
seven Sports. And Nick, we've gone back and forth numerous
times on this postgame show being critical you could say,
of Stephen crow And really since that game where Greg
Guard called out Kraw for not having any rebounds and
called out his performance, since then, craw has really been

(23:24):
on a heater. Eighteen points to night, eight of eleven
from the field, ten rebounds, a double double for him,
his first of the season. Guard, I believe called him
a difference maker postgame today. Just what have you seen
is the difference in Stephen Crowe now versus what we
saw earlier in the season.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
Well, guys. This explains exactly kind of why I wasn't
too concerned, you know, going forward, because to me, it
was all just mental. Right, He's shown what he is
capable of throughout his career. I know that fans have
wanted him to be for aggressive. I may be more
consistent at times, right, but there's a reason that he

(24:04):
was very very much welcomed back for a fifty year
with this program. So now I'm seeing a player that
is just being incredibly aggressive. Physical active, I think is
a word that I really would note tonight, right, Like
you mentioned ten rebounds, really made an impact on the

(24:24):
defensive end, like had a few turnovers. But I'm okay
with that. I think Coach Guard is okay with that.
Just with the way that he's playing. Three assists, eighteen points.
I'm doing quick mental math. I think, like seventy one
percent shooting from the field eight for eleven, Like seventy
one or seventy two percent, just terrific. And there were times,
in Coach Guard said a post Game two with the

(24:46):
TV crew, he was kind of their most consistent guy
when they needed to play late, when there was a struggle,
right when Rutgers was making things a little bit tighter.
So while I'm not shocked by any means, I'm impressed, guys,
because this is a total, totally different player, like you mentioned, Dave,
and this is just massive for Wisconsin here in conference season.

Speaker 4 (25:06):
Nick, to look at the Badger's performance today, it would
be hard to really repeat what they did the last
time out right, one hundred and sixteen points, twenty three pointers.
It was a tough act to follow, and today it
was a vastly different game where the three pointer came
in spurts and it wasn't particularly long. It was zero

(25:26):
for seven to start. Then they go on a run
just making every three, and then it was a struggle
the rest of the way. Pair that with the fact
that they only had six free throws in the game,
all of which came late in the contest. How impressed
were you that Wisconsin was kind of able to roll
with the punches and come out and play in what
was a vastly different, far more gritty game and pull

(25:47):
out the victory today.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
Yeah, Nick, I think that's a really good way to
put things. You know, again, I'm not surprised, but I
am a little bit impressed because this the team. It's
an older team, right, but there are still some younger guys,
certainly like a Blackwell or Winter JANICKI that played key roles,
and it felt like this group never got phased or anything,

(26:12):
even against though they haven't been great this year against
a talented Rutgers team. I think Pichael's a good coach
that can be a tough place to play, but Wisconsin
just answered the bell every time. And I feel like
I've said it on this show. You know, I tweeted it,
but I really mean it. Coach Guard and the staff
deserve a ton of credit, not just for the way

(26:33):
they're coaching this group, but the way this roster was assembled.
Guys like John Tanja. I think you're starting to see
some growth from Amos obviously going way back with finding
Blackwell and how he's a legitimate star. So I think, again, Nick,
a lot of it is mental, and I think they
showed that mental fortitude against a solid team in a

(26:53):
tough spot. And now looking ahead. I won't go too far,
but you look at that January schedule, a lot of
winnable games coming up for this group.

Speaker 9 (27:02):
Guys.

Speaker 1 (27:03):
Yeah, Nick, as you mentioned a lot of key players
and key roles on this team, and one of them
is Max Klesmet. In the second half there, we saw
him kind of take a shot and land awkwardly on
another player's ankle, and he rolls his ankle. Did did
Greg Guard have an updated all on Max Klezmant?

Speaker 5 (27:25):
So, you know, I'll be able to get a little
bit more kind of digging in from some of my
colleagues that were, you know, there at the presser, but
just from what I've initially read and saw on the
broadcast and what Klesman was able to do at least
walking you know, back and forth in the halls and
I think working to get back. I don't get the sense,

(27:45):
guys that this is like a very long term thing.
He was certainly in a lot of pain. That's a
tough thing to happen, especially for a shooter. It's a
good thing that they've got like three days. I'm sure
they'll have an off day and a couple of practices
before Friday. We'll see what that looks like. But I
would say that I don't get the sense it is
a super long term thing, just based on what I

(28:06):
saw with my eyes and some of the broadcast teeth
as well.

Speaker 4 (28:10):
Nick they were tasked with stopping too impressive freshmen today,
and I won't be naive O, I'll be Stellan Harper
wasn't a really himself, right, he's still working himself back
from a very tough case of the flu. They sat
on the television broadcast that he had lost nine pounds, right,
so he's working his way back. He took two shots,
he didn't score, but Ace Bailey has held to three

(28:30):
of sixteen shooting. In your opinion, what did Wisconsin do
best to make him uncomfortable?

Speaker 5 (28:38):
Yeah, I think Nick, they did two things that they've
done against several stars this year. I think that they
were physical, and I think that they threw different looks
at Ace Bailey. I saw Max Klesmitt, I saw John Blackwell,
I saw JANICKI like different guys, different strengths, different wingspan,
just getting into his grill a little bit. Actually will

(29:00):
note with you guys. I saw A Bailey about a
year and a half ago at a Team USA camp.
Incredibly talented player. I think he's got a high motor.
Obviously can score the rocket ton. But if you watch
that game, not really knowing much about A Bailey, you
would not have necessarily thought that he is that superstar

(29:20):
because Wisconsin did such a nice job on him. I
think two or three were maybe just missed open jumpers,
but the other ten were really kind of defensively oriented
and focused and probably missus because of the Badgers. So
I think those are a couple of aspects, Nick, that
really stand out to me. I think as this season
keeps going forward and I think about that defense, sometimes

(29:43):
I wish that this group was able to just pull
out that one win against Michigan because I think overall
they have done a really nice job against stars against
opposing superstars. But fortunately, I think that defense is coming
along pretty well along with the offense that we're right now.

Speaker 1 (30:01):
Yeah, absolutely, Nick, And I mean they get Ace Bailey
there in some foul trouble and he ends up fouling
out on a technical as he throws an elbow at
Carter Gilmore. That probably wasn't too terribly impressive for the
NBA scouts that were reportedly in attendance. Matt Lapay was
talking about earlier, and just kind of one final question

(30:21):
for you here, Nick, You know, with all those NBA
scouts and attendance, what do you think they're walking away
with an opinion of with John Blackwell after his twenty
one point performance here. I mean, he's a sophomore and
he's he kind of showed out here tonight with all
those scouts and attendants. Do you think he maybe could
be trending towards that kind of Johnny David's path of

(30:43):
reaching the NBA after a sophomore season. Is that something
Badgers fans have to concern themselves with.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
Yeah, David, I think that's a really good and fair question.
I know a couple of fans who are talking about
it on my board. You know. I think the more
I watch him, I still feel like at least one
more year would do a lot of good. And knowing
John a little bit, I think he really liked it here,
loves his role. But I'll say this, if he has

(31:10):
a lot of games like that over fifty percent shooting,
you know, back to that games affecting the overall game
in different ways, I could see him at least checking
out those waters. I don't really have a question that
he is an NBA guy after this year next, but
I think you want that first round grade, and that's
why I think it'd make a lot of sense to
play at least a third year college troops.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
Yeah, and you know, if he does, you may have
to increase that nil package that he's going to be getting.
I think that's something that at the very least may
have to be in the offering. Nick as always appreciate
you hopping on, appreciate your insight on this team, and
look forward to talking you again later this week as
Badger's return home to the Coal Center.

Speaker 5 (31:52):
Thank you so much, guys. I'll look forward to tea then.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
All right, there he goes Nick Osen at twenty four
to seven Sports, you know, always giving us his great
insight as he always does. Coming up, we will hear
from head coach Greg Gard as he reacted after this
twelve point victory over a Big Ten Conference opponent in
Rutgers seventy five sixty three. The final score, Greg Guard

win seventy five sixty three over Rutgers here tonight. Leading
scorer for the Badgers once again, John Blackwell twenty one

(33:24):
points on eight to fifteen shooting. Steve mccrowell added eighteen
on a double double with ten rebounds. John Tonjay fifteen points,
nine rebounds, just one rebound, shy of that coveted double
double for Tonja. After the game, head coach Greg Guard
met up with Brian Butch and here are his comments.

(33:46):
After a twelve point Badgers win, we're here with Coach Guard.

Speaker 11 (33:51):
Coach First, a great win on the road. You get it,
Rutgers gets it down to three. You guys had a response,
what works so well?

Speaker 13 (33:59):
During that response, four straight stops, you know, I think
defensively we turned turned the screws and then we were
able to clean up get better defensive rebounding production. And
then obviously Steve Krall, I thought he was really helped
kick it over the top on the glass both ends.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
Really, I thought he was a difference maker. Yeah, and
you look at what you guys have done against Iowa.

Speaker 11 (34:21):
You know, Stanford, you slow him down at Ace Bailey
three of sixteen, one of five from three, only nine points.
Both those guys are elite players in this league. Defensively,
you guys have done a really good job.

Speaker 13 (34:33):
On those players. What are you guys doing so well there? Well,
it's a team effort, you know. And obviously Max had
Bailey at the start, but we had other guys JANICKI
on him, Blackwell on him. We were prepared to go
bigger on him if we needed to, and we got
switched at at times. Nolan had him for a part
of a possession. And the same thing with Harper. You know,
we knew we were gonna start with John on him,
but I thought, Cam, you know, we just we come

(34:55):
at you in waves, which I think is on both ends,
we come at you in waves. Offensively with how we
can score in spurts, and we have different guys at
different nights, and we come at you defensively too. We
give different looks and we got great contributions off the bench.
But no means was it a pretty win. But a
win is a win.

Speaker 11 (35:10):
And we were talking about it during the game a
lot this team, and I use the word team because
everybody has found ways to contribute, whether it's Carter Gilmore,
Kamara McGee coming off the bench hitting that big shot at.

Speaker 2 (35:21):
The end of the half, everybody had their hand in
this win.

Speaker 11 (35:26):
What do you feel is so important with this team
because it just seems like when the moment is there,
when their number is called, they come in and they respond.

Speaker 2 (35:34):
Yeah, I think more than anything.

Speaker 13 (35:35):
And this was said by the players a dozen times
in each of the timeouts, both halves really, but specifically
as they were making a run at us in the
second half. Stay together, you know, don't fracture, don't separate,
stay together, keep chipping away and keep fighting. You know,
it's a team. It's a team that can play in
different ways. You know, it's never been pretty here and

(35:56):
all the years we've been coming here, it's gritty, not pretty,
and when you come into the rack just knowing it's
gonna be somewhat of a rock fight. We couldn't get
enough separation there at the in the first half, but
you know they're gonna come in and make some make
some shots and get the crowd behind him, and we
were able to you know, answer back and push it
back out there at the end.

Speaker 9 (36:15):
Congratulation, This is a great road win.

Speaker 13 (36:17):
Coach, all right, thanks, Brian, all right, all right, there
was Badger's head coachers.

Speaker 9 (36:20):
What it's seventy five sixty three.

Speaker 2 (36:22):
Brian Butch after the game.

Speaker 1 (36:24):
Uh, And you know what I found interesting in there, Nick,
was the praise for for Stephen Crowell. And we've kind
of talked about this a bunch, Uh, but this crowd
being able to be so you know aggressive now on
the offensive end and being a four player defensively, I'm
both into the court.

Speaker 11 (36:42):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (36:42):
You know, we've come a long way really from crowd
being like, how do you have zero rebounds to now
putting up a double double and getting praise as a
difference maker from Greg guard.

Speaker 4 (36:53):
Confidence is a dangerous drug man and this has worked
out well for Steve.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
He's built up a lot of confidence.

Speaker 4 (36:59):
He's playing with a little bit more passionate it appears
out there, and he's working himself into game shape. He's
a big dude, and I guess maybe it took some
time for him to get in the position he needs
to be. And I do think there's something about Big
ten competition that gets him going right. Where he had
some disappointing performances to start Big ten play, but he's

(37:20):
turned it around recently and he's carried it into the
last two games for sure, And hey, if Steve can
be out there and play a full game, doyn't commit
any fouls that are gonna put him in early foul trouble.
I'm not worried that Steve's not gonna show up, but
he still needs to keep playing like he's been playing
to make me feel fully confident that come March, you're

(37:43):
gonna have a guy that can put up eighteen and
ten in a game. He's seven feet tall. That's his advantage.
He can shoot, that's his advantage. Let's keep it going.
But Steve played really well today and he probably was
the difference in a game where neither side really could
figure things out on the offensive end. Certainly, Rutgers at
a roferde though, shooting thirty four percent from the field.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
Yeah, they certainly did.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
And Steve Big, Steve the Uss Crow, as Pam Walkershaw
calls him, rounding into mid season form. I guess you
could call it, and there's a reason they call it
mid season form. And Stephen Krowell, it looks like is
certainly finding it.

Speaker 2 (38:22):
That'll do it for us.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
Next time We'll be with You is going to be
Friday night. That is going to be against Minnesota. The
Golden Gophers come to the Cole Center, the bitter rival
comes to town. That game will tip off at six pm.
Pregim coverage will begin at five, and then of course
