Now with the call of the game, here's Mark Tauscher
and the Voice of the Badgers Matt Lapey.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
Good evening from Barry Alvarez Field at Camp Randalls Stadium
in Madison, alongside Mark Touscher, Patrick Kerr, Mike Keller, our engineer,
Dave McCann, and Aisha Jackson. Back at the network studio.
This is matt Leapeye. We welcome you two Wisconsin football
and its homecoming weekend as the Badgers draw Kirk Farnce
and the Iowa Hawkeyes and the battle for the Heartland Trophy.
(01:32):
The Badgers looking for their first Big Ten win of
the season after dropping their first two outings. The Hawkeys
open conference play with a winning Rutgers and then a
hard fought game where Iowa fell five points short against
Indiana a couple of weeks ago. Before we get started,
let's pause ten seconds for station identification, ten for an ID.
This is Badger Football from Learfield. I talked about it
(01:55):
a lot. These two programs through the years have been
built in much the same way. The fan I've always
thought are much more alike than either side wants to admit.
It is a good rivalry, it's a respectful rivalry, and
the Badgers want the bull.
Speaker 6 (02:10):
Back because I always had it for a few years.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
So that gets us to our construction business group keys
to Tonight's game Wisconsent Operating Engineers, Build your Career Joined
one three to nine dot Com Mark Telsher. What do
you see as the keys here tonight?
Speaker 8 (02:26):
Well, like most games, I mean, turnovers always are going
to play a factor, but I really feel like tonight,
I think both offenses are going to struggle to make long,
sustainable drives. So it's gonna come down to mistakes and
who makes fewer of them at critical points, and whether
that's a fumble or a busted coverage. I just believe
(02:47):
this game will be won by the team that makes
the fewest mistakes. Both teams are going to come try
to be physical. I think Iowa felt really confident. Obviously,
what they did at Iowa City in the second half
last week I think left a big mark on this staff.
They went and addressed a lot of those issues, especially
on the defensive line. So it just feels like to
(03:07):
me and watching both of these teams play, it is
going to be tough sledding for both offenses sustain anything meaningful.
It's gonna come down to big plays in short fields.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
As Couch mentioned, it was humbling for the Badgers in
Iowa City a year ago. For more on that and
how the Badgers are kind of leaned into it. A
lot of times you hear about nah last year's last year,
they haven't taken that path. As we sent it down
to our sideline reporter Patrick Herb Patrick, the Badgers really
took that to heart what happened last fall at Kinnick Stadium,
(03:41):
and that's been with them for a long time throughout
their workouts.
Speaker 9 (03:45):
You're absolutely right some coaches will shy away from putting
too much importance into one game or overplaying rivalries. I
listened to Jeff Grimes talk this week. He said he's
coached under both ways. Where some people say every game
is equal, let's not put too much into it, where
others playoff rivalries. Luke Fickle is an old school Big
ten guy. He believes in rivalries. He obviously was baptized
(04:06):
in the Ohio State Michigan rivalry, and he has understood
the importance of them. Now that has not gone Wisconsin's
way obviously last year. They have three empty trophy cases
in their locker room right now.
Speaker 10 (04:16):
But he understands the importance. He also understands what.
Speaker 9 (04:19):
A statement game that was last year in Iowa City
and so you're right. They've geared a lot of their
offseason and their season this year to making good from
that outcome. So during the spring practice, every practice finished
with forty two push ups on the field to signify
the forty two points that Iowa put on Wisconsin in
(04:39):
that game.
Speaker 10 (04:40):
This week, there have been.
Speaker 9 (04:41):
Pictures of the Iowa players with the Bull the Heartland
trophy plastered around the facility, including in the locker room.
In each player's locker room, the TVs in the locker
room have been running a loop of highlights of Iowa celebrating.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
With the Bull.
Speaker 10 (04:55):
So they are not shying away from the importance of
this game.
Speaker 9 (04:58):
And Luke Fickle's been on ends with his team this
week trying to emphasize what it's gonna take, the physicality
and the testing of manhood, if you will, that this
game is gonna take now once they kick off. None
of that history matters. We all know that, but it's
a great tactic. It seems to put a lot of
emphasis on this. My intel from the other side says
(05:19):
that Iowa thinks that they've already got this game.
Speaker 10 (05:21):
Won from a mental standpoint.
Speaker 9 (05:23):
That because Wisconsin is putting so much into it Iowa
is in their heads and that's that's what my intel
tells you that they are believing.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
Heading into this one, we've had a little chirpin as
both teams come out of their tunnels and before the
opening kick we have a penalty marker out there.
Speaker 6 (05:40):
There is some chirpin.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
I mean they come in from the opposite ends of
Camp Randalls Stadium. Luke Fickle out there talking to this
officiating crew, so they were talking about that respectful rivalry
and never mind.
Speaker 8 (05:53):
Yeah, I think there was a little logo, you know,
the whole putting flags and logos. I think Iowa ventured
a little too far into the motion w unlike what's
on the block uniform WS today, and I think the
Wisconsin folks didn't appreciate it.
Speaker 11 (06:08):
I don't know what the flag what they're gonna end.
Speaker 8 (06:10):
Up calling, but there is some logo violations going on.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
And we haven't even had the coin toss yet. So
now the captain's out there, Kerry Kodonko, Aaron wit, Riley Malman,
and Darryl Peterson for Wisconsin and Peter Kahn's is the
honorary captain, part of some really really good offensive lines
and Peter a big part of that. So it's fun
to see Pete Khans back here at Camp Randall tonight.
(06:34):
As we'll send it down to the field as Chris
kit is the referee, the captain's meet at midfield, and
here we go.
Speaker 12 (06:42):
An awesome evening for college football. Iowa's the visitors. They'll
call the coin toss. This is heads and tails, heads, tails?
Speaker 4 (06:52):
What is your call?
Speaker 5 (06:54):
Tails? Is the call?
Speaker 11 (06:56):
It is tails.
Speaker 6 (06:57):
You've won the.
Speaker 12 (06:58):
Toss, elected to receive the opening kickoff?
Speaker 11 (07:02):
Which way would you like to kick?
Speaker 12 (07:03):
Go ahead and turn your backs. Iowa won the toss,
elects to receive the opening kickoff.
Speaker 11 (07:11):
Good luck, guys.
Speaker 6 (07:12):
Let's have a.
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Great game, all right. The Hawk guys and the home
white unis, the gold Pants, the black and gold helmets,
the Badgers and the throwback unis the Cardinal with the
white trim and the white pants is.
Speaker 11 (07:25):
Seven his first of the game.
Speaker 12 (07:28):
The fifteen yard penalty will be enforced.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
On the opening kickoffs, so they get the penalty against Wisconsin.
I think that was Tyrese fear Breed who was doing
the chirping and Tallas you mentioned Iowa got a little
got a little on that logo a little bit Tyros
didn't particularly care.
Speaker 8 (07:47):
For it, and I think we liked that part of it,
but I was actually thinking both teams would defer, but
there might even be a chance a team jumps on defense.
Speaker 11 (07:55):
This penalty is why I was taking.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
That absolutely yes.
Speaker 8 (07:58):
And so while I love the you know, I want you.
You don't take anything from any you know that. But
there's also you have to be smart and you know,
Patrick was talking about all of the things in Iowa
kind of feeling like they're in the heads. You have
to manage your emotions too. We talk about that on
Senior Night, and it's every game. And when you do this,
now that changed already. I think how Iowa is going
(08:20):
to approach this.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
And you've got a very very dangerous return man in
Cayden Wigion. We mentioned he's already brought one back this
season as a kick return man. Tonight's gay brought to
you by Alliant Energy. Alliant Energy is building a strong,
resilient energy future today and for generations to come. So
this does give Iowa a great chance to get Caden
(08:44):
Wigion loose to start the game, as the Badgers will
be kicking off from their twenty yard line. Nathaniel Vaykos
per usual will handle that for Wisconsin, Iowa receiving going
north to south, and as we view it that is
left to right at Camp Randall Stadium, we are ready
to roll the Wisconsin Badgers and the Iowa Hawkeyes on
(09:07):
an absolutely beautiful evening in Madison's sixty three degrees light
breeze out of the east at a clear sky.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
As we are.
Speaker 5 (09:16):
Underway, Veco's with the kick hitted well, Wigien waits for it,
catches at the seventh right side ten fifteen, twenty twenty five,
wigion up to the thirty and he gets rocked right there.
Olla in our net leave busting down there, or Grant
Dean perhaps busting down there in kick coverage for the
Wisconsin Badgers. And we are underway.
Speaker 8 (09:37):
I'll tell you who is very excited about that play
and that tackle is fear brief because the one thing,
you know, you get all excited, you get over the
top a little bit. The last thing you want is
to cost your football team in Wisconsin. Special teams did
a great job there picking up their teammate what could
have been a big start for Iowa. Special Teams went
down and answered the bill.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
That was Grant's dean with the stick and it will
be Mark Granowski, the quarterback, the former star at South
Dakota State. Sam Phillips wide right, motions left, Granowski tenderney
and all gives it to go quick past Cadenwegian left
side and he gets hit quickly taken down Ricardo Holman
left side across the thirty to the thirty two yard
(10:19):
line on a gain of two second down and eight.
As we are underway in Madison, Well.
Speaker 8 (10:24):
That tackle was by Rico, but that was all win.
He went and took on both of Iowa's blockers. That's
just a simple swing pass. Try to cover two WITSI
now blew up both, set up Rico for the tackle.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
Mark Granowski under his center Logan Jones DJ Vonami. The
tied end flips to the left side of the formation.
Single back offense, Kamari Molton is the running back of
the thirty two yard line Iowa territory second.
Speaker 6 (10:48):
And eight hand off.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
Bolton hits it off the left edge across the thirty
five yard line, brought down by Emilio a guard, the
red shirt freshman corner at the thirty seven of Iowa.
A gain of five and it's third down and three
for the Hawk eye.
Speaker 11 (11:00):
And this is what we saw a lot of in
Iowa City last year.
Speaker 8 (11:03):
It was just simple zone plays and thought, we're gonna
move your guys into your linebackers. Obviously, Wisconsin feels like
they're in a better spot tonight with the bigger bodies
and more bodies that can combat that.
Speaker 11 (11:14):
That was a nice run there to get started.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
I well a little better than forty eight percent on
third down. The Badger defense is stingy on third down.
Opponent's converted only a quarter of the time. Shotgun or
Gronowski seth Anderson, a receiver in motion left to right,
two receivers either side of the formation, or the eye
with thirty seven yard line scaptain Gronowski Badger's rush for
a left side pass a high one. It sails over
(11:37):
the head of dj Vonami that tied in across midfield
of the far side, and the Hawk guys are forced
to punch on fourth down.
Speaker 8 (11:45):
And you always wonder when a quarterback isn't able to
take all of their reps at timing early and all
at that ball. Sometimes you miss by a little bit.
That thing missed by a bunch. Here's somebody over on
the bench could have caught that. That's how far that
ball sailed.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
We's dacing on the punt, averaging a bit better than
forty five yards per punts. Tyrell Henry deep at the
Badger seventeen yard line line of scrimmages. The Iowa thirty
seven snapped a dake and Badgers get some heats. The
kick is away, fair catch signaled by Henry, and he'll
make it just across the twenty yard line in Wisconsin territory.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
That was a forty three.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Yard punt, little more than a minute and a half
gone by no score is the Badgers go on offense
for the first time tonight.
Speaker 8 (12:24):
Kind of an interesting formation there, you know with punt
now you have three guys kind of personal protectors. The
long snapper is by himself. There was nobody off to
the left. And what ended up happening is Wisconsin didn't shift.
They kept all their guys and brought a lot of
heat punt block opportunity. That punt just barely got off
and you forced him into a maybe not being able
(12:45):
as comfortable as he normally would.
Speaker 13 (12:47):
Like to be.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Hunter Simmons ready to make his second start as a
Badger he's in the shotgun. Dylan Jones to his right
out of the shotgun to snap the Simmons time to
throw looking sets fires to the left and it is
caught by kick a hunah, oh or no, they'll say
no catch. He juggled it and then went out of bounds. Oh,
(13:08):
Simmons threading the defense to get that ball to Tretch,
who could not gather it. It'll be a second out
and ten here four Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (13:18):
Well, Trench thinks he caught it, but every wide receiver
always thinks they catch everything. But I wouldn't be surprised
if they take a look at it looked like he fell.
I don't see that ball jostling. Like the rough said,
it looks like his butt hit.
Speaker 11 (13:31):
Let's take a look at it.
Speaker 10 (13:33):
There we go.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
It started to move a little bit, but we're gonna
we're gonna have a into the game.
Speaker 6 (13:41):
Well that's a heck of an effort.
Speaker 11 (13:43):
Well, first off, I love the play call.
Speaker 8 (13:45):
You get protection you're throwing on first down, and Matt
you said it that was a really good zone. He
threaded it in there perfectly to Tretch, and you know
the ref came up quickly say any jostled it. Let's
take a look, good hand fighting moved a little bit
at the bottom of it.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
Yeah, the question, it was moving, But they'll have to
determine whether Kekahuna was still in control of the football
throughout the process of the catch, and so yeah, I'm
not Yeah, this one might, this one might be upheld here.
Speaker 11 (14:20):
It's what an effort though.
Speaker 8 (14:22):
He fought through to Iowa defended that well and I
think the ball as he landed it jostled around and
that's why old boy and r F was coming up
doing the old six seven jostle.
Speaker 6 (14:33):
Six or seven.
Speaker 11 (14:35):
Yes, all right.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Mark Johnson is using that with his women's hockey team,
and so Vimj's where I mean, come.
Speaker 8 (14:40):
On, there's nothing better than the combat your kids stuff
when you just take it over and then they lose
the coolness factor dropped significantly.
Speaker 5 (14:50):
That pass went between the corner to Sean Lee and
the safety Cohen enteringer Wentter Simmons, making his second star
as a Badger. He started three games at Southern Illinois
last year. I asked Hunter earlier in the week, what
was the biggest crowd you played in front of at SIU,
and he said about eleven thousand ten x last week. Yeah,
(15:14):
from eleven thousand to one hundred eleven thousand. That was
what he walked into at the Big House.
Speaker 11 (15:19):
Ye have to love that last week.
Speaker 8 (15:21):
I thought Hunter, you when you factor all of that in,
really composed and did it. I thought he did a
really nice job managing things. And you know, as the
broadcast was going last week, the blitz and the way
the running backs, there was a lot of good things
to build off of.
Speaker 12 (15:37):
And this is a good strolling on the field is upheld,
the pass is incomplete.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
Second that, as we thought talas you just it moved
just a little too much there, but a terrific effort
nonetheless from tretch Ka Kahuna. But after all of that,
it's second and ten for the Badgers at their twenty
one yard line. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (15:57):
I think if they had kept that one angle away
from us, it would have probably been all right.
Speaker 11 (16:01):
But yeah, there was too much Jocelyn on contact with
the ground.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
Kahuna slot left in the Anthony wide to the left,
Chris Brooks out to the right, you know, Kakahuna in
motion and they'll try to get around with tretch gets
a block across the twenty twenty five yard line. And
he gets drilled. Ball pops out. Iowa looks like it
has recovered, and it has, and Trench really got labeled.
He is slow to get up, and in fact he
(16:28):
isn't getting up. It'll be Iowa football Zach Lutmer coming
out of there with it for the Hawkeys. So an
early turnover here for Wisconsin. Xavier Wampa was getting in there.
The question is was he down first?
Speaker 8 (16:51):
Yeah, the hit, it was a big hit on the
right on it, but I think he led his arm.
There's you know, potentially for a little head, you know,
head content. But I do think his took us hit
the ground before that ball fell out. So hopefully Tretch
is all right. That was a hillacious hit that he
just took.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
He is being escorted to the sideline, right, I mean
he's walking but there he definitely has a two person escort. Yes,
he was just real So Tretch had a nearly terrific
catch that he was out of bounds and then on
an end around he gets belted.
Speaker 8 (17:31):
Nice job blocking, Really good job by our tight end,
you know, getting out there and picking up. Dylan Jones
did a really good job of picking his guy up.
And what I love there trench was running physical. Now
got to protect yourself. Hopefully he had possession of that
football as his butt hit. I think that's what they're
gonna rule.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
Yeah, they're gonna check the scene, make sure that the
ball wasn't starting to move before you went down. But
one of the angles I saw it, it looked like
he was down first.
Speaker 11 (17:56):
I thought too, that's what we're hoping.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
Patrick.
Speaker 9 (18:00):
He got Kekhuda came off the field and he went
into the EW Health medicine tent.
Speaker 6 (18:05):
The ball and it's right knee.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
Here we go.
Speaker 6 (18:08):
It's third down, So the Badgers keep it. Go ahead. Patrick.
Speaker 9 (18:11):
He was released from that ten, but they have taken
him back to the locker room for further examination. You
could tell that if this is probably a head injury unfortunately,
but they're gonna take him back and see how he does.
Speaker 10 (18:20):
We'll have to get an update probably coming out of halftime.
Speaker 5 (18:23):
All right. So the play gets the Badgers to their
twenty seven yard line. It is no fumble. The Badgers
have a third and four from their own twenty seven.
Inside of two minutes into the game, we've had two reviews.
Trips to the left pistol formation, Jones behind the quarterback
Hunter Simmons snapped the Simmons hands off, Dylan Jones room
up the middle. He'll hit it up across a thirty
(18:44):
yard line, moving the pile, and Dylan Jones with a
grown man run across the thirty five to the thirty
six yard line. First down Wisconsin and the penalty marker
is down.
Speaker 11 (18:59):
Oh what did I love?
Speaker 8 (18:59):
What I so off from Emerson Mandel just continuing to push.
Hopefully it's not a flag at the end of it.
He finished llewell and down almost to the ground, and
you could tell, oh, boy didn't appreciate what Mandel was bringing.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Chris Coid talking to us again, aiding.
Speaker 12 (19:16):
The run Offince number fifty seven, pulling him in the
field of play, five yard penalty from the spot of
the foul.
Speaker 6 (19:23):
It's third out.
Speaker 5 (19:25):
You can push, but you can't pull. He used the
word pulling. Okay, so that was he caught it on Renfroe.
If you call it on Renfro, you can push a runner,
you can't pull a runner. And that's apparently what Jake
did the latter. Okay, to say the least, a little
choppy start here. It's third and two.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
Well, the Badgers that their twenty nine.
Speaker 8 (19:48):
Way too much ref stuff here, but what I love.
You can tell Wisconsin is bringing the physicality so far are.
Speaker 6 (19:54):
The receivers winging.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
Lance Mason to the lipt snapped the Simmons, He's gonna
pull it down and Ronnie, you'll get the first down
up near the thirty four yard line. And to the
best of my viewpoints there were no flags and we
might have consecutive plays without a flag or a review.
First down, Wisconsin, Hollylujah.
Speaker 8 (20:11):
That was just really good protection and Hunter Simmons knew
exactly what he needed to do.
Speaker 11 (20:16):
The coverage was good, only needed three or four yards.
Speaker 8 (20:20):
Kind of made a very quick decision to go put
his head down and pick up a pick.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
First down, three minutes in, no score, First and ten
for the Badgers at their own thirty four yard line.
Jackson Acre in the backfield, darry On or make that
Dylan Jones lines up behind the quarterback. Simmons reads, keep,
shuffles left, throws it in the dirt in the vicinity
of Jackson Acre. Jackson Rexwroth linebacker out there in coverage.
(20:46):
Second and ten for the Badgers at their thirty four
yard line.
Speaker 11 (20:50):
That was just a trying to move the pocket a
little bit again.
Speaker 14 (20:53):
I like it.
Speaker 8 (20:54):
First down, you're trying to get some positive yard. It's
trying to kind of establish a rhythm. I have a
play that really well, not only you know, with their
linebacker coming off the edge, but also in coverage on
that little out route, everything covered.
Speaker 11 (21:07):
Hunter Simmons smartly just dumped the ball, moved along.
Speaker 5 (21:09):
Double wide to the left. Simmons under center, straight I
formation acre the full back, now Dylan Jones the tailback
to the Wisconsin thirty four yard line. Here's the handoff,
Dylan Jones a straight ahead across the thirty five up
to the thirty six yard line. Jayden Montgomery in there,
the son of Jerry Montgomery, probably with the Packers.
Speaker 6 (21:30):
Now the line coach with the Bengals.
Speaker 8 (21:34):
Not shocking, seeing a lot of similarities what Michigan did.
Iowa has decided they're gonna shoot their linebackers. Whether it's
cross dogging, which means they cross up over the center.
They are forcing Wisconsin's offensive line to man on man block.
Speaker 11 (21:49):
They think they can handle it. We'll see who winds
up winning that battle.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
They're down at eight for the Badgers at their own
thirty six yard line. Simmons back into the shotgun, two
receivers to the left snap. The Simmons look to throw
fires to the left and it is caught by Chris
Brooks close to the first down, goes out of bounds.
They'll mark at the forty three of Wisconsin. They need
the forty four. So let's see how Luke Fickle plays
(22:13):
this in the early minutes. He's gonna go ahead and
punts in it in a game that figures to be
so much about field position. The crowd doesn't like it,
but I'm not sure I would disagree with this decision.
I wouldn't have mind it going for it, but this
is gonna be that old school field position kind of night.
Speaker 8 (22:35):
That's the plan, and I think you always have different
tricks up your sleeve, but good protection. I think Chris
Brooks would like to have that back. I think awareness
over on the sideline. He ended up a yard short.
Speaker 6 (22:46):
Snap to Atticus Bertrams and the kick is away.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
Cayden Rwegian, the dangerous return man, will make the catch,
makes a man miss running left across the fifteen yard line.
Now reversing Field, weaves his way up across the tent
and his shoved back. Why normally you take the fair
catch there. He had a guy nearly in his face,
but weegan played it and he got about four yards
on the return.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
Three to be exact.
Speaker 5 (23:10):
After that forty yard punch from Atticus bertras well, you've
had a fair amount going on in the first five minutes.
Life's better with America Family Insurance. That's because their team
is always there to protect your dreams and drive on Wisconsin.

ten oh two left in the first quarter.
Speaker 8 (25:50):
I'll tell you this, I love the approach so far
by Wisconsin. It last year obviously left a mark on
this group and the physicality, so this is the most
physical I've seen.
Speaker 11 (26:01):
I know it's a small sample size, but so far
this team is coming out fired out.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
Mark Ronowski the quarterback quick toss. Kayden Wigion lining up
of the backfield, runs into his right across the twenty
twenty five yard line, runs into Ricardo Holman, Mason Rager
helping out, but Caydenuigion He'll line up anywhere and in
the backfield here he runs for ten and a first
down for the Hawkeys at their thirty yard line.
Speaker 11 (26:22):
That was very nice. You're able to get the edge
there and Rico got him down.
Speaker 8 (26:27):
It ended up being Rico just slowed him down enough
and brought him down, but not before they picked.
Speaker 6 (26:33):
Up a quick ten bags in there.
Speaker 5 (26:34):
Nickel Jamir Latimer joining the party in the defensive backfield
trips to the left.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
Kamari Moulton, the running back.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
Jacob Gill, a former Northwestern wildcatter receiver in motion left
right shotgun stamp Mark Kronowski looks throws short, caught by
Gil smacked right away by a guard Amilio, a guard
with the head across of thirty five to the thirty
six on a gain of six.
Speaker 6 (26:56):
Second down and four for the hawk Eys.
Speaker 8 (26:57):
Just a quick little option route there, easy pitch and
catch and Aguard came right up and stuck him right
where wasn't that? You want to make sure you're sending
a message to these wide receivers tight ends, whoever's gonna
come across the middle. If you're gonna sit in that zone,
the ball's gonna come, make sure they feel it.
Speaker 11 (27:14):
That leads to some drops and some maybe other good
things down.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
The road and just go base now Ladimer out with
In Gronowski under center, DJ Vlonami lining up as a
full back. Camari Moulton the tailback on second down and
four hand off off the right side across the forty
yard line and he'll be taken down by Christian Allegro
at the forty three of Iowa. That's a gain of
(27:37):
about seven yards and a first down for the Hawkeys.
Speaker 11 (27:39):
Yeah, that was just too much, too much push up front.
Speaker 8 (27:42):
Iowa's offensive line got a little shove up to the
linebackers and you just let Moulton just go.
Speaker 11 (27:48):
That was way too much on a second down run.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
Moulton has missed a couple of games so far this
season with the shoulder issue, but has been back in
the last couple of outings for the Hawkeyes. Iowa at
his forty three first and tent legion in motion left
to right, now loops back to the left Ganowski and
off to McNeil off the right side of the fifty
of the forty five breaks to tackle forty thirty five
and smacked out of bounds by Austin Brown into Wisconsin territory.
(28:16):
And we've got more pushing and shoving well off the ball.
Penalty markers a couple of beats after the play was over,
the ball is spotted at the thirty three of Wisconsin
and it's It was chippy before the opening kickoff and
it continues here in this first quarter. This officiating crew
(28:38):
putting in a lot of work through the first half
of the first quarter and they're getting it sorted out.
Speaker 11 (28:43):
Looked like it was Rico down there.
Speaker 8 (28:44):
I don't know who else was down there, but really
great play design there by Iowa got everybody flowing left
and then pulled their center and right guard around.
Speaker 12 (28:52):
They're as study unsportsmanlike fouls on the play. Unsportsmanlike conduct
offense number five, defense number one.
Speaker 11 (29:01):
The penalties canceled.
Speaker 10 (29:02):
This is both players first of the game.
Speaker 5 (29:04):
It's first down there, you get a second one and
you're out. That's Jamir Latimer for Wisconsin, Jacob Gill for Iowa.
So that's that's pretty much the fellas. Let's knock it off,
matching penalties there seven fifty left in the first quarter.
No score.
Speaker 8 (29:21):
Yeah, it was I mean way away from the play
and kind of from the back. I don't blame Aladimir
at all.
Speaker 18 (29:27):
For that.
Speaker 11 (29:28):
That was kind of a cheaper hit. Didn't like it.
Speaker 5 (29:31):
Trips to the left, s Granowski in the shotgun takes
the snap, stumbles as he fades, rolls to his right
throwing deep ball, and it is caught by Haying Large incomplete.
They say it hit the ground, couldn't quite control it. Well,
that was nearly a terrific catch inside the five yard line. Large,
the grad student with four receptions this season, and almost
(29:53):
set up the Hawkeys with a first in goal instead
at second and ten at the Wisconsin thirty three yard line.
Speaker 8 (30:01):
A nice job there by Agar to just getting his
hand up in there.
Speaker 11 (30:05):
That was a kind of a goofy play.
Speaker 8 (30:07):
Gronowski was kind of fumbling and stumbling around back there
and actually threw a pretty good ball, but Agar was
able to get his hand. Looked like he was able
to knock that down and force the incompletion.
Speaker 5 (30:17):
Mark Gronowski with fifty two career wins as a quarterback,
the most ever in the NCAA history. Hand off off
the right side inside the thirty five inside the thirty
yard line, taken to the ground by Christian Allegro down
the twenty four yard line of Wisconsin twenty four or
twenty five. Let's see where they market it will be
(30:38):
a third down looks like the twenty five third down
and two for the Hawkeyes.
Speaker 8 (30:43):
Yeah, that was a just a zone to the right,
and we've said that zone left, zone right, and the
tough block there is on the nose Iowa center completely tackled.
I think it was Barton down there. They did not
call it that they're gonna allow that it's gonna be
tough sledding.
Speaker 6 (30:59):
See the receivers.
Speaker 5 (31:00):
I had one on the left bolting the running back
to the left of Mark Kronowski, Zach ork wor at
the tight end, motions left hand off Molten inside the
twenty five scrambling for the first down, and he will
get there wrapped up by tacking Curtis at the twenty
yard or make that a legro I should say four
Wisconsin at the twenty yard line. First down. Iowa was
(31:20):
six thirty left in a scoreless first quarter.
Speaker 8 (31:22):
Yeah, pretty good push, a really good cut, and then
really good to be able to kind of keep his
balance and not just fall to the ground. But I
think it would have been very close if he fell
on the initial contact. Was able to kind of bear
crawl his way to pick up that first down.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Xavior Williams, a red shirt freshman in there now for
the Hawkeys. Danowski under his center on first and ten,
he'll take the stamp, hands off the Williams up the
right hash market. He is wrapped up and tossed down
by Parker Peterson that defensive line for Wisconsin. A gain
of three as they'll place at the seventeen of the Badgers.
Speaker 8 (31:57):
He kind was able to slip through there and Parker
Peterson pushed off the line a little bit but was
able to shed the blocker and then as you kind
of hog tied him and flung him down to the
ground there, keeping him to a three yard game.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
Peterson and Brandon Lane come out. JVR sugs Ben Bartner
in second down and seven for Iowa bought at the
Badgers seventeen yard line. Re Receivers out to the lefts
Hayden Large to the rights at the McNeil. The running
back motions left or over the middle, caught by legion
at the fifteen breaking right, and he's down at the
(32:31):
thirteen yard line. A legro again with the stop and
a third down coming up with the Hawkeyes. They'll need
four as they'll market at the fourteen yard line of Wisconsin, and.
Speaker 8 (32:43):
Not surprisingly, Iowa region is one of their playmakers finding ways.
That was a little option middle screen where they got
their three linemen out in a great tackle because you
can see Wegen goes from zero to sixty.
Speaker 6 (32:57):
Real quick.
Speaker 5 (32:59):
Re receiver to the lefts Xavier Williams back in and
running back for the Badger fourteen yard line. Snapperganowski rolling
left looking now, fades, winds it up, throws in zone
incomplete wanted Sam Phillips coverage from Riccardo home and a
penalty marker is down at the line of scrimmage. Maybe
(33:20):
a hold here against the Hawkeyes.
Speaker 8 (33:22):
Let's see, anytime you have your scrambling around a lot
and you're moving in the pocket, holding to get called
offense number fifty eight, the penalties decline.
Speaker 11 (33:37):
It's fourth down, so.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
It's fourth and four. K Peeper the guilty party there
the right guard for Iowa, and Drew Stevens will come
on to attempt the field goal here for the Hawkeyes.
He is nine of twelve this season. This will be
a thirty two yard attempts. Iowa looking to be first
(33:59):
on the board here thirty two yard try for the
right hash lines are down, where's the snap placement is made,
the kick is away and the kick is good. A
thirty two yarder from Drew Stevens and Iowa with the
first points. Here tonight at Camp Randalls Stadium, College football

back on offense and for more on the return to
(36:42):
the center position of Jake Renfro Let's check in again
with Patrick.
Speaker 9 (36:45):
A big storyline this year has been an inconsistency of
the offensive line, and maybe one point of emphasis you
could look at to explain it would be the inconsistency
at the center position. Four different guys have rotated through
that spot after Jake renfro got injured. Well he's back today.
I remember he started all twelve games last year. This
offensive line has had six different combinations start six games
(37:06):
this year, and Jeff Grime said this week that getting
him back makes everybody better.
Speaker 10 (37:12):
He said from a communication.
Speaker 9 (37:13):
Standpoint, from a leadership standpoint, but also from a confidence standpoint,
just the poise that he brings and the experience he brings.
And that's no shade on Davis Hinzen, who started at
center last week and actually performed pretty well at a
position he didn't have much experience. But getting renfro back
I think is a big piece to hopefully stabilizing this
offensive line and its ability.
Speaker 10 (37:32):
To run the ball and protect the quarterback.
Speaker 5 (37:34):
That's a key word there to how stabilizing right that
offensive line no better than any of us.
Speaker 6 (37:40):
How important that could be.
Speaker 8 (37:42):
For this team moving forward, especially with all of the
young players and moving around, and you just know Jake
is a really good leader and stability. Bring in a
little bit of that Tonight, Big Brew.
Speaker 5 (37:52):
Stevens on the run of Vinnie Anthony is deep, the
kick is away and Anthony will let it hit into
the in and zone for the touchback and the Badger
start their twenty five yard line. Four thirty three left
in the first quarter. It's three nothing Iowa on the
Drew Stevens thirty two yard field goal.
Speaker 8 (38:09):
So now you look at it in Wisconsin, I think
from a yardage standpoint, and been able to they've been
able to do eighty eight yards rushing. They've been able
to to kind of do some things. So far that
I think you you have to be fired up about.
It's twenty two yards, not twenty two yards, but they're
gonna get toady eight.
Speaker 11 (38:27):
It's it's just I really like the mentality of what
they've done so far.
Speaker 5 (38:31):
Our stat monitor, whoever's in charge, was tailgating early today.
Apparently on first here's a misdirection toss kid Jacamelli to
the left side and he gets hit right away up
across the twenty five to the twenty six yard line.
Bryce Hawthorne a defensive tackle getting in there for the
Hawkeyes gain of one maybe two. Let's see where they place,
making one at the twenty six of Wisconsin sego down
(38:52):
and nine, and.
Speaker 8 (38:53):
I think coming into this and Grimes is looking at this,
and you're not going to just line up and try
to pound the football. You wanted to make sure you're
making Iowa cover all fifty three and a third width wise.
Speaker 5 (39:02):
Two.
Speaker 11 (39:03):
We've seen it with Tretch. We're seeing trying to get
on in that perimeter, soften things up inside.
Speaker 5 (39:07):
Receivers to the right, one to the left. On second down,
shotgun staff Simmons looks Bro's batted in the ear. It's
intercepted by Hawthorne of Iowa might have been Brian Allen,
the defensive lineman, knocking it in the air and Hawthorne
picked it off and the Hawkeyes with another serious threat
off the game's first turnover.
Speaker 8 (39:29):
Just off of our left tackle was able to beat
him inside and was able to get his hand up
and bat the ball straight up in the air. Riley
just got gave up that inside pressure and when that
ball pops up, d lineman or pounce and was able
to secure it in in the first big turnover this game.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
And the Hawkeyes have it at the Wisconsin twenty four
yard line with three point fifty two left of the
first quarter. It's three to nothing Iowa on the Badger
defense up against it off a sudden change hmm was Allen,
a junior, who deflected it and Hawthorne who gathered it
(40:10):
slot to the lefts. Nathan McNeil is the running back
snap the Hawthorne. They snapped to Granowski and the handoff
goes to McNeil hits it off the left side down
to the twenty yard line of Wisconsin on a gain
of four second down and six for the Hawkeys.
Speaker 11 (40:27):
Yeah, just a straight zone to the left and a
great cut.
Speaker 8 (40:30):
There not a lot there, and then he just cut
it back and I think it was riger coming down.
Hard was able to get him, but not before he
picked up four yards.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
Sam Phillips so come out to the left, Seth Anderson
to the rights. Kamari Moulton in a running back now
for Iowa. Baranowski in the shotgun for the Badger twenty
yard line where at second and six reads it keeps
the Ganowski throws him in the middle. It's caught by
Phillips inside the ten, wrapped up and tossed down by
Emilie o Agar at the six yard line of Wisconsin
(41:02):
first in goal.
Speaker 11 (41:03):
Iowa RPO and Gronowski pulled it quick.
Speaker 8 (41:07):
What happens Your linebackers are coming flying up the field
trying to stop that run.
Speaker 11 (41:12):
You leave a huge space for a slant over the middle.
Speaker 8 (41:16):
Agard was able to bring him down, but not before
a big pitch and catch for.
Speaker 11 (41:20):
A first down.
Speaker 5 (41:21):
Gil Dayton, Howard Reese vanderz They are the receivers to
the right, Molten the running back, gill in motion right
to left shotgun Stap Gronowski hands off Golten off the
left side. He's in touchdown Iowa. Too easy, Kamari Molton
off the left side. There's the Hawkeyes capitalize on the turnover.
They need to cover just twenty four yards and they
(41:43):
do it quickly. Nine to nothing Iowa.
Speaker 11 (41:45):
Yeah, way too easy?
Speaker 8 (41:47):
Is it just right off the left side, left side
of Iowa's offensive line.
Speaker 11 (41:51):
Way too much base. I don't even know if he
was touched.
Speaker 8 (41:53):
Maybe touched her on the five yard line, but other
than that, a walk in touchdown and not the way
we are looking to get this thing started.
Speaker 5 (42:02):
So a nine to nothing lead for Iowa with two
and a half minutes left in the first quarter. Drew
Stevens on for the pat It is in the air
and it is good, so we will take another break.

Officially a six yard touchdown run. The Hawkeyes only needed
(44:40):
three plays to cover all of twenty four yards After
the interception, It's now ten to nothing Iowa with two
thirty three left in the first quarter.
Speaker 8 (44:48):
Here in Madison, the exact opposite of what kind of
start we are looking for. You can't turn the ball over,
and that was you know, unfortunately just that first and
ten kind of an easy pitch and catch threat, and
you know, our left tackle gets beat inside, the guy
makes a good play, bats it up, Hawthorne is able
to catch it. And then the disappointing part there was
(45:08):
and I know it's tough on a defense. He just
came off the field after a long drive. That's where
you need to bow up. And if you could hold
that to a six to zero, all of a sudden,
it's a whole different vibe. Now, lot of pressure here
for this special teams to set up an offense to
get something going because you can just kind of feel
everything is a little fragile after what we just saw
in the last couple of minutes.
Speaker 5 (45:29):
Vinnie Anthony deep along with caid Yacamelli. Good for some
kind of spark, any kind of spark kick in the
air and there will be no return as Annie will
let that hit about seven yards deep first and ten
for the Badgers at their twenty five yard line.
Speaker 11 (45:50):
And this is where you're.
Speaker 8 (45:50):
Looking for your leaders, your you know, Vinnie Anthony's your tailbacks.
You're looking for someone to provide that spark because again
I thought, coming into this game, gonna be real tough,
sled and trying to go seventy five seventy yards on
a without big chunk plays, something that this offense needs badly.
A couple of big chunk plays and gets some positive
(46:12):
momentum going.
Speaker 5 (46:14):
Tyrell Henry slot right, motions left tretch Keckerhuna injured. My
first possession of the night. Simmons act to throw up
the play fake flush to his right, Lunch throws in
his quad, rolling catch across the forty yard line. Tyrell
Henry up to the forty one again, is sixteen at
a first down for the Badgers.
Speaker 8 (46:34):
Great job by Emerson Mandela finishing his guy past that.
Let Hunter Simmons roll out and just really smart sitting down.
Henry sits down where he can get it. Hunter Simmons
continued to just kind of move manipulate in the pocket,
kept his eyes down the field.
Speaker 11 (46:50):
Made a good throw and now we're off. Good first
play coming back.
Speaker 5 (46:53):
Did the Anthony Dylan Jones come out to the rights,
Tyrell Henry to the left. Now they'll get Jones into
the backfield and he'll fake the handoff. Two of the
past picked off right in the hands of Aaron Grays
at the twenty ten five dive into the goal line
and he is in touchdown.
Speaker 6 (47:10):
Iowa Aaron Graves.
Speaker 5 (47:13):
A defensive tackle with a look what I found moments
and the wheels have come off in the first.
Speaker 8 (47:20):
Quarter, Wisconsin sets up a screenplay and I don't know
if he was alert and was aware, but that was
he saw it and was able to go out there.
And Hunter Simmons either didn't see it or predisposed just
to throw it and actually caught it with his hands
and then was able to run it in.
Speaker 11 (47:40):
Think he got in let's see, maybe hit the pylon.
Might be a little short, but unbelievable.
Speaker 8 (47:47):
Just a poor decision thereby our quarterback and it led
to a disastrous play.
Speaker 6 (47:55):
He's short, Yeah he is.
Speaker 5 (47:57):
I thought he may have stepped out of bounds before
he made that last dive for the end zone, but
I think.
Speaker 11 (48:05):
His knee might be down right before. But what a
play by.
Speaker 8 (48:12):
Aaron Graves made what every d lineman is always dreaming of,
because that wasn't a bad tack if.
Speaker 12 (48:18):
You the runners knee was down with the ball at
the half yard line where it'll be first in golf.
Speaker 5 (48:25):
So first and goal. From what he said, the half
yard line. Well, that was you know from Hunter Simmons
last week. We really didn't see decisions like that. There
would not have been a risky throw here there. The
interception was on the pass word. Quite frankly, there should
have been a passing afference call. But boy, that was
I mean, you talk about room service.
Speaker 8 (48:44):
So I think you know a lot of times you're
running a screen and you're just worried about avoiding the
rush and getting the ball over. That was a let's
get the ball out quick. And I give Graves credit.
He read it a lot of times. D Lineman not
the smartest cats just keep rushing up. That time he
read it was athletic enough to make a play.
Speaker 5 (49:01):
Granowski under center. Williams is the running back. Granowski is
going to try to push it across himself. Big pile.
They only needed to cover a half a yard. No
signal yet, as Iowa claiming like you would think touchdown,
and now the official say touchdown. Iowa mark Gronowski from
(49:23):
a half a yard away. It's sixteen to nothing. The
Hawkeyes with ninety seconds left in the first quarter.
Speaker 8 (49:34):
You know, touch push with their tight end coming in motions,
shoving Gronowski and the disastrous start is here.
Speaker 5 (49:45):
So two interceptions that Iowa has turned into touchdowns, and
it's just the very thing, the very thing you cannot
do if you're Wisconsin or any team for that matter,
is give the other guys a short field. And that's
exactly what Wisconsin has done in this first quarter. The

Contest from the Rail Transport Broadcast Booth one point thirty
left in the first quarter at already it's Iowa seventeen,
(52:26):
Wisconsin nothing. The Hawkeyes with two touchdowns off of Badger interceptions.
One possession they cover twenty four yards, the other a
half a yard, and I.
Speaker 8 (52:37):
Know everybody, you'll you'll look at that and you'll see
two picks. The last one obviously was completely that was
decision making and not understanding. The other one obviously was
bad at up ball. But what it's been is you're
just not executing what you're trying to get done. And
when you do that against a good, solid defense and
a good solid football team, they will make you pay.
(52:57):
And I think everybody knew that coming in. You understood
kind of what this game was going to look like.
And now all of that goes out the window. You
have to come up with a plan now, because I
think a lot of us thought it was going to
be a race to twenty points. Well, Iowa now has
seventeen already and they still have a minute and a
half left in this quarter, and I'd like.
Speaker 5 (53:16):
They had to cover a lot of ground to get
to that lead. The field goal drive was the long one.
It was a sixty six yard possession. The kick from
Stevens and this will not be returned. This will sail
out of the end zone. First and ten for the
Badgers at their twenty five yard line.
Speaker 8 (53:33):
And I like some of the things that Grimes is
doing here like I did last week, where it can't
just be run the ball, run the ball, third and six.
You need to mix things up. It went with some
things a little more lateral. We had a little success obviously.
Unfortunately for Tretch he got drilled and we'll see how
what his availability will be. But you're throwing the ball,
you're trying to get some screenplays, and unfortunately you've had
(53:55):
some lack of execution, and both times Iowa's made you pay.
Speaker 5 (53:58):
Darry Andrew Pre in the backfield now winds up behind
the quarterback Simmons, a little jet motion hand off Dupre
up the middle of cost A thirty yard line, gets
hit by Colin Indringer, who rocked him back progress stop
near the thirty four yard line. Good birds from darry
On Dupree, with a little room to run. Second in
short here for the Badgers. They'll mark at the thirty three.
(54:20):
Make it second in two.
Speaker 8 (54:21):
I love that little zone, right, and a really nice
cutback by Dupree and Malman got his guy at Jackson
Acer just continue to climb up a nice job lower
in his pads.
Speaker 11 (54:30):
That's the kind of thing.
Speaker 8 (54:31):
A nine yard run on first down gives you a
lot of options on second.
Speaker 5 (54:34):
Baker and Dupree in the backfield again. Chris Brooks wide left,
motions right, straight eye formation, Nkrew Simmons under here, center,
Jake Renfro pulls back hand off Dupre and he'll be
stopped short of the first down. He gets hit by
Zach Lutmer at the thirty four yard line of Wisconsin
where it's third down and one.
Speaker 8 (54:55):
Now, what with a little more of a gap scheme
there you pulled Kadanko the right guard trying to get
around and just no movement over on that side, and
then you bring a corner comes flying off Seas, reads
the play and gets down there, gets at his ankles
and end up a little short on that second and short.
Speaker 5 (55:12):
They stay with the I formation. Third and one for
the Badgers at the thirty four yard line. Simmons off
the play, fake, drops the throw, fires down the middle.
Too long wanted Mason at the forty five in Iowa territory, TJ. Hall,
Colin entringer, a corner and a safety respectively on the coverage.
So they take a shot on third and one and
(55:32):
miss it. It's fourth and one for the Badgers at
their thirty four yard line and the punt team is on.
Speaker 8 (55:42):
I think if you're gonna take that shot, you'd think
it's fourth and one. You'd think you're maybe gonna go
for it. If you're gonna do that, well we'll see.
Speaker 5 (55:52):
I thinkus Bertram's out there, but the thirty four yard
line Wisconsin Territory snaff the Bertrams and the kick is
away and steers it away from Luigi now plays it
on a hop across a thirty right side thirty five
and gets out of bounds. They tried to steer it
(56:13):
away from him. It was not hit well in Wigion.
D Room off the hop a forty yard punt thirteen
on the return four seconds left in the first quarter.
It is seventeen to nothing. Iowa and the Hawk guys
with some pretty decent field position here for Mark Ronowski
and company. Thirty six yard line, Iowa Territory.
Speaker 8 (56:35):
And I don't mind.
Speaker 11 (56:36):
It's third and one.
Speaker 8 (56:36):
Well, you get the great nine yard run to start,
and then second and one you want to get the
first down and didn't block it up. Great, didn't pick
it up and then you decide to take that shot
up there. And what I'm good with that You you
had a tight end, a little graby not able to
connect on that and then to punt it away. I
think with the defense that's been out there for a while.
It's down seventeen, it's an interesting move.
Speaker 5 (56:59):
From the thirty nine yard line. That's where Iowa begins
first and tent shotgun snapped Gronowski. Badgers rush forward. Granowski
with time throws left side, hangs in the air, picked
off by Riccardo Holman. Yes, Sir Rico with the pick.
It was intended for Seth Anderson. Halman flies in front
(57:19):
of it out of bounds at the thirty seven of
Wisconsin and something positive. Finally as we hit the end
of the first quarter, so Riccardino Hollman comes up with

Back with You at Camp Randall's Stadium Mike Heller with
a quick scoreboard update where it's seventeen to nothing Iowa
over Wisconsin after one. The Badgers did get an interception
on the last play of the first quarter, so they
start this second quarter with the ball.
Speaker 30 (59:37):
A couple of Big Ten games right now.
Speaker 28 (59:39):
Fifteenth rank Michigan trails at USC seven nothing midway through
the first Also, Perdue leads at Minnesota that one is
seven nothing five minutes into the game. Earlier today, Indiana,
number seven in the country, goes on the road and
wins at Oregon thirty to twenty. The Indiana Hoosiers are
six and oho and three and ohero in the Big Ten.
That's Oregon's first loss of the season. Wisconsin will be
(01:00:02):
there in two weeks. Ohio State will be here next week.
Number one in the country. They win at Illinois seventeenth
ranked thirty four to sixteen. UCLA won at Michigan State,
and Northwestern beat Penn State twenty two to twenty one.
Speaker 30 (01:00:15):
Remember when Penn State was preseason number one.
Speaker 28 (01:00:18):
Now Drew Aller is out for the season with an
injury in that game, and Penn State drops to zero
to three in the Big Ten.

Man, Wow, that's.
Speaker 5 (01:00:27):
Until out the double whammy there. Drew Aller actually been
playing really well because they're not great in the receiving court,

and that crew, that Trifecta and Mante a huge part
of that.
Speaker 11 (01:01:15):
Kudos to everybody though.
Speaker 5 (01:01:17):
Seventeen to nothing Iowa. We start the second quarter. Ricardo
Hollman with an interception to get the Badgers offense back
out there at their thirty seven yard line. First and
ten pistol formation and off Darry Andrew Prie got smacked
right away. He's going to try to power his way
for a little bit of yard. It's able to get
one out of it, and that's it, and there'll be
(01:01:39):
a second down and nine here for Wisconsin Badgers, going
north to south, left to right.
Speaker 6 (01:01:44):
As we view it in the second quarter.
Speaker 8 (01:01:46):
He didn't have a lot of interest in going down there.
Just wide open, too much guys r at there. Rex
Roth came flying through untouched and that kind of threw
the entire rhythm of the playoff.
Speaker 11 (01:01:56):
And I give Dari a lot of credit. He was
not gonna get tackle.
Speaker 8 (01:02:00):
He kept fighting it.
Speaker 5 (01:02:02):
Jure Pree in the backfield behind Simmons Acre to the
rights of the quarterback, and Jackson will shift to the
left snap, the Hunter Simmons looks, pumps whips it. Oh,
it's a backwards pass. The ball loose to Pre trying
to gather cannot still loose a scramble inside the thirty
yard line.
Speaker 6 (01:02:16):
Let's see, let's see who has it.
Speaker 5 (01:02:19):
That had all the look of a backwards pass and
a Badger also shaken up a little bit off the ball.
They're trying to determine who has recovered this football. I
haven't seen a signal yet the misoficiating crew.
Speaker 11 (01:02:40):
Recovered inbounds by the defense. It's first out.
Speaker 5 (01:02:44):
It'll be Iowa ball. And in the meantime, there is
an injured Badger right in front of the Iowa bench.
So just when Wisconsin does something positive, the Badgers do
something really negative. Right after that, Simon is with a
little pump pump fake and then try to flip it
(01:03:04):
out to dary On Dupre and it was it just
bounced that way, and an injured Badger will sort it
all out. We'll take a break. We're in the opening
minute of the second quarter. It is seventeen to nothing.

Darian Dupree is the injured Badger. Zach Wetmer came up
with the loose ball on the backwards pass, so another
short field for Iowa. Now at the Badger twenty eight
yard line. After the third Wisconsin turnover, we're fifty seconds
into the second quarter, seventeen to nothing Iowa and the
(01:05:27):
hawkey's looking for more.
Speaker 8 (01:05:29):
You could almost feel Hunter Simmons like kind of stressing out.
He had his first rut and he went through second read.
And you know when you have an interception, I think
all the you know, that's where that experience where you
just got to move to the next play and then
just kind of.
Speaker 11 (01:05:43):
Almost felt haphazardly through it.
Speaker 8 (01:05:45):
And he did throw it behind the line of scrimmage too, Dearrion,
and I think Darian is the one that was hopefully
he's gonna be all right, but brutal sequence there from Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (01:05:55):
Mark Gronowski under center from the twenty eight yard line
of Wisconsin first in ten. Here's the handoff Kamari Moulton
probing the right side and he gets stopped by Mason
Rieger racing over there to make the play again of
just a yard to the twenty seven of the Badgers
second down and nine full of hawks.
Speaker 8 (01:06:13):
Yeah, a little outside zone play and just to get
job of kind of holding the point there, not getting
pushed around and able to bring him down after just
a one yard game.
Speaker 11 (01:06:23):
Nice job there by Ryger getting him down.
Speaker 5 (01:06:26):
Roll now for Wisconsin is to try to force a
field goal. If you can't get a turnover. Moulton remains
the running back. Granowski will go under his center Logan Jones.
Two receivers ted lefts, one tied to the rights. Ganowski
pulls back hand off Bolton off the right side, for
twenty five, spins off the defender inside the twenty yard line,
(01:06:47):
bangs his way down here the fifteen good hard run
from Kamari Moulton. First down Iowa, they'll place of the
fifteen yard line of Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (01:06:58):
A mistackle there by Young coming down from his safety spot,
and once that mistackle came, everything else was blocked up
pretty good.
Speaker 11 (01:07:05):
Got north and south a.
Speaker 8 (01:07:06):
Great little spin move to pick up a little bit
more and put Iowa back on the doorstep for another score.
Speaker 5 (01:07:12):
Damn bad. Young's still in there with Christian Zachman recovering
from his injuries suffered in the Alabama game. First down handoff,
Bolton tries the left side and he gets smacked near
the ten yard line. There was Young getting in there
among others for Wisconsin a game I've second down coming
up with the hawk eys.
Speaker 8 (01:07:30):
And this is not complicated stuff what I was doing.
They're doing what they did last year. They're lining up
and they're running zone for the most part. And a
little bit of a block in the back there off
the perimeter. Actually a good job by Wisconsin turning it
back in not called and then go north and south,
pick up four or five yards.
Speaker 5 (01:07:48):
Nathan McNeil in the backfield, now freshman out of Tampa, Florida.
Second down and five with the Badger ten yard line,
shotgun snap Karnowski. He'll hand off to McNeil and he
gets wrapped up by Darryl Peterson a loss of one
to the eleven yard line.
Speaker 6 (01:08:02):
Third down and six.
Speaker 8 (01:08:04):
Just love what we heard from Luke Fickle this week
about Darryl Peterson, and I've seen it. There's been at
least one or two plays this season every game where
he's beating his guy and he the biggest compliment you
can get as a player when a coach says he
has squeezed everything out of his talent.
Speaker 11 (01:08:19):
That he possibly could.
Speaker 8 (01:08:20):
A leader on this team, Darryl Peterson consistently makes a
few plays every game that was one there.
Speaker 5 (01:08:26):
Third down in six, Iowa at the Wisconsin eleven yard line,
Jacob Gill sloped to the right, Xavier Williams in the
backfield down shotgun snap Gronowski quick shot over the middle
that's caught by Goonami inside the five. He gets hit
by three Badgers. That'll be a first down with a
yard to spare. Christian Allegro first on the scene. First
(01:08:47):
in goal Iowa at the four.
Speaker 11 (01:08:49):
Pretty easy there.
Speaker 8 (01:08:50):
Wisconsin has three guys are playing just as kind of
a simple zone in the middle, and you have to
you have to squeeze that a little bit when you
get down into this red area. You have have to
squeeze it, especially down at the five yard line on
a third down. Too much space there. They end up
with three guys rallying to the football, but not before
Iowa could pick up that.
Speaker 5 (01:09:08):
First down, first and goal at the four. Two receivers
tight to the ranks, there's a handoff to Williams, gets
hit behind the line of scrimmage, tries to turn it
back inside and waiting for him was the big man
Brandon Lane, part of that interior of the Wisconsin defense.
And that'll be a loss of about four yards to
the eight where it's second in goal for the Hawkeys.
(01:09:31):
Ten thirty eight left and a half seventeen to nothing Iowa.
Speaker 8 (01:09:34):
And how you stop this zone play is you have
to get penetration. You can't allow their offensive line to
roll you back in the linebackers there. Brand Lane does
a great job of taking guys on. It allows Tacket
Curtis to have free flow to the football and you
get a lost yardage play behind the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 5 (01:09:51):
Branowski goes back under center Zach rk We're at the
tight end, lines up as a fullback.
Speaker 6 (01:09:55):
They're offset.
Speaker 5 (01:09:56):
Branowski off the playfake, looking to throw under some pressure,
flushed to his left Chase By Lane inside the ten.
Granowski gets escorted to the boundary at about this six
yard line where it's third and goal.
Speaker 6 (01:10:11):
Is the Badgers trying to blow up here?
Speaker 8 (01:10:13):
Defensively, Reiger jet shoved by and that gave a little
bit of room off of the left side of Iowa's
offensive line. And the thing you were wondering about Gronowski
this week is would he be able to move? But
he be able to run with that injury from a
couple of weeks ago, and maybe he's not quite as fluid,
but he looked got out of the pocket there and
was able to pick up some positive yardage.
Speaker 5 (01:10:32):
Seth Anderson Sam Phillips double wide to the rights, third
and goal. Iowa at the six yard line, white clock,
is it three two? Snapped their Ganowski. Here's the handoff,
nothing doing it gets getting to the six yard line
was Xavier Williams. Good work defensively by Wisconsin. Looked like
(01:10:55):
Riiger in there. Full of the Badgers.
Speaker 11 (01:10:58):
Raiger again flying off the edge.
Speaker 8 (01:11:00):
I think Darryl Peterson was in there too to help
make sure to secure it. And after that turnover and
after that bad possession by the offense, the Wisconsin defense
did as best as it could here to force Iowa
into a field goal attempt, trying to keep this thing
within range Drew.
Speaker 5 (01:11:15):
Stevens, who hit from thirty two yards away in the
first quarter. This is a twenty five yard try left
hash mark bicking toward the north end zone. Here's the
stamp bowl down. Kick is away and it is good.
So seventeen points off the turnovers here for the Iowa
Hawk guys, not even.
Speaker 6 (01:11:34):
A quarter and a half into the game.
Speaker 5 (01:11:36):
And we will take a break because Iowa extends the
advantage to twenty. There is a penalty marker down here,
So what we throw to a break, we'll hold up
and tell you that Wisconsin football brought to you by
UW Health sports Medicine, a healthcare team for the Badgers
and proud sponsors of UW Athletics.
Speaker 12 (01:11:54):
Here's the Cally unsports ing in the Life Conduct Defense
number fifteen fifteen direction number seventeen the fifteen yard penalty
you will be enforced on the kickoff. This is the
first unsportsman life conduct penalty of the.
Speaker 5 (01:12:11):
Game, so seventeen that'd be on Darryl Peterson. We'll go
ahead and take a break with eight forty four left
in the first half. Iowa twenty Wisconsin nothing. This is
Badger football from lear Field.

We have eight forty four left and a half. It
is twenty to nothing Iowa as the hawk Gys recover
a backwards pass again one of those possessions they didn't
have to cover much to get points on the board.
Twenty two yards. There, they've had a touchdown drive of
(01:14:43):
twenty four and another off an interception that they needed
to only deal with one half of a yard to
get to the end zone.
Speaker 36 (01:14:51):
It has.
Speaker 5 (01:14:53):
Fallen apart and then some herefore Wisconsin through not even
the first quarter and a half.
Speaker 8 (01:14:58):
And one of your leaders, I was just anything about
DP Daryl Peterson. We figured I just saw on the
replay why he was penalized. Simply put, he he kind
of threw a bird, threw a bird at.
Speaker 6 (01:15:11):
Him, and that's kind of an easy call.
Speaker 8 (01:15:14):
Yes, So the broadcast showed they put a halo around it,
which I'm not sure why there was a halo, and
then they marked it off. But that means Iowa will
be kicking from the fifty yard line.
Speaker 5 (01:15:29):
Not his fine as moment, but I think we both
we've talked tells you and I Darryl Peterson, you hard
pressed to find a better dude. Yep. I mean, he's
just he's just tremendous. There's a ground ball that is
scooped up across the twenty five yard line, up across
the thirty and two about the thirty two as Drew
Stevens they said, one straight on the ground getting in
(01:15:50):
a tuca. He was there showing the good hands of
the badges of a first and ten. They'll markeet their
thirty one yard line.
Speaker 8 (01:15:56):
So he had put the ball, he laid it oblong wise.
He was trying to drill it into one of Wisconsin's chests. Yeah,
and see if he could get a bounce back because
you know where they were kicking it from, and fortunately missed.
Wisconsin's able to get it past the thirty and now
I would say this is an important drive.
Speaker 11 (01:16:12):
I think that's not being hyperbolic.
Speaker 5 (01:16:14):
Here, No, I think that's accurate. All right, good, definitely accurate.
Tuck the Rashcraft tied end lines up on the right
side of the formation. Tyrrel Henry emotion to the right
hand off Dylan Jones up the middle thirty five. Jones
cut swat across the forty yard line, lowers the pads,
rams his way up to the forty four yard line.
Gain of thirteen for Dylan Jones. Maybe getting a heavier
(01:16:34):
dose here. Darian Dupree was injured to the last Badger possession,
so you figure that tailbag spot now with Jones and
then Kate Yakamelli. Jones with a run for a first
down for Wisconsin and.
Speaker 11 (01:16:46):
Lowered his pads. But that was that was beautiful.
Speaker 8 (01:16:48):
Renfro did a really nice job of securing his guy
and then Tyrrel Henry. Anytime you get a big, explosive,
longer run, your whiteouts have to be a part of it.
Speaker 5 (01:16:57):
Well, the forty four of Wisconsin first and ten to
Jones up the middle with room forty five, spins off
a man across midfield and Dylan Jones hours his way
to the forty six of Iowa. That should be a
first down. There is Dylan Jones getting it into a
little rhythm, perhaps back to back first down runs. Freshet
of downs out the Iowa forty.
Speaker 11 (01:17:18):
Six running angry? What is that angry runs? That old
boy from the NFL network. Does that was blocked up beautifully?
Speaker 8 (01:17:24):
Met Mandel did a great job off the right tackle
spot washing his guy, and then Dylan Jones spun out
of the unblocked man that picked up a first out.
Speaker 5 (01:17:31):
Chris Brooks fitting Anthony double wide to the left, Simmons
under his center, straight eye back Jackson Acre and Dylan Jones.
Simmons will feed Jones again off the right side. It
will slice right to left, across the forty five and
down to the forty two of Iowa. Look like Brian
Allen in there among others for Iowa gain of four
(01:17:52):
second down and six.
Speaker 8 (01:17:55):
Anohing Really just hard run that one not blocked up
quite as cleanly. What I like withold Dylan Jones is
doing is that's a zone to the right and he
is pushing it there. You have to push even if
there's not a lot there. You have to get the
linebackers to flow. That gives you the cutback to pick
up fourth.
Speaker 5 (01:18:10):
This little formation double wide to the left Anthony and
the slot Ballard wide left. Now Jones will shift to
the right of the quarterback. Simmons gets the snap, looks
the throw stands at the fifty shuffles left, He'll throw
it up and away incomplete, well over the head of
a well covered Vinnie Anthony Jackson, Rekschwath out there in coverage.
It's third down and six at the Iowa forty two
(01:18:34):
yard line. We have six thirty eight left in the
second quarter. It's twenty to nothing the Hawkeyes.
Speaker 8 (01:18:40):
This is where that inexperience comes for Hunter Simmons. That
was blocked up beautifully. That Iowa ran a little stunt,
and I thought the interior of Wisconsin's line did a
great job of picking it up.
Speaker 11 (01:18:49):
If you stay in the pocket, you have more time.
Speaker 8 (01:18:52):
You roll out to the left and allows those guys
to pounce on a little earlier.
Speaker 5 (01:18:56):
Brooks and Anthony to the left, Ballard to the right
hand off, Dylan jonespins off the man inside forty yard line,
bang down out about the thirty seven savior. Wampa safety
comes up there to make the hit. It's fourth and
one at the Iowa thirty seven yard line. Obviously the
offense will stay on the field now as a Badger's
going for it down twenty with six point eighteen left
(01:19:18):
to the half. Badgers seven of nine converting on fourth
down so far.
Speaker 33 (01:19:23):
This year.
Speaker 5 (01:19:25):
So here we go and on fourth and one, Simmons
in the gun. Two receivers ted right, ballered out to
the left, Jones to the left of the quarterback. Simmons
rolling right looking throwing, and it's dropped by Mason at
the thirty three yard line. It was right there, but
Lance Mason just could not make the catch, and we
(01:19:50):
have a time out here in Madison. That was drawn
up perfectly. The throw on the money, and that kind
of night so far for the Badgers. We'll step away
with five point fifty seven left in the first half.
It's still Iowa twenty Wisconsin. Nothing back in one minute.

Man's listen to all Thanks college sports, including live games

four and streaming on the Serious XM app. Iowa gets
it back on downs, leading twenty to nothing with five
point fifty seven left in the first half. The Hawkeyes
will take over at their thirty seven yard line. Let's
get an injury report. Couple of Badgers offensive players banged
(01:21:40):
up in this first half.
Speaker 6 (01:21:41):
Patrick, what do you have?
Speaker 9 (01:21:42):
Yeah, Wisconsin playing a little shorthand on the offensive end.
Both Trudge Kakahuna and Darian Dupree have spent time in
the YI Health Injury Tent and both are back in
the locker room at this point. Kakahuna has been ruled
out with an upper body injury. We saw that early
in the game on the first possession. Dupre is still
it remains questionable for this one, but they have taken
(01:22:02):
him back to the locker room for further examination. So
we'll get a better sense coming out of a halftime,
but as of right now they're playing without two of
their top offensive weapons.
Speaker 5 (01:22:12):
Seemed pretty clear they wanted to get Kekohuna involved. They
try to pass to him right away, nearly made a
terrific catch, but just could not maintain control and the
near sideline as we see it in the next play
in an end a round, he just got hammered down
and that has kept tretch out ever since.
Speaker 11 (01:22:34):
And there was no doubt you felt like that was
going to be a part of the plan today.
Speaker 8 (01:22:38):
And on that play there, fourth and one, a heavy
just a boot basically what we call it naked. You
sell everybody off to the left, you roll the quarterback
out right. You could not have drawn that up any better.
I think if Hunter Simmons is looking at it, he
threw it right where he needed to. He threw it hard,
and maybe that's one of those cases where as you
continue to gain experience, you understand what you do. Catch that.
(01:23:00):
Lance Mason should make ten out of ten times. Threw
it a little hard and now fell to the ground.
In here, Iowa gets the ball back on.
Speaker 5 (01:23:07):
Down Hiro's skeins in a corner boundary corner working opposite
of Ricardo Hollman from the thirty seven of Iowa first
and ten.
Speaker 33 (01:23:17):
Right.
Speaker 5 (01:23:17):
Granowski, the quarterback under his center, takes playfake drops the throw,
shoots it to the right, and it's incomplete Intended for
Dayton Howard at the forty four yard line of the
farest side in Wisconsin Territory, incomplete pass, second and ten
for the Hawkeyes at their thirty seven yard line.
Speaker 8 (01:23:36):
Iowa's had a lot of success running the football. They
have eighty eight yards if this thing is correct.
Speaker 11 (01:23:42):
So it was there.
Speaker 8 (01:23:43):
You're trying to maybe make a big chunk play there
on just they're basically a little corner route. Gronowski threw
it a little too deep, and now you're sitting here,
second and ten, Wisconsin needs to find a way to
get the ball back here before the end of the half.
Speaker 5 (01:23:57):
So go back offense to your receivers tight right one
to the left from the thirty seven yard line Iowa Territory.
Granowski hands off to McNeil off the left side and
he gets drilled. Nothing at the point of attack for
the Iowa running back and getting in there was Cooper Catalano,
the freshman linebacker, a star at Germantown High School. Loss
(01:24:20):
of one third down at eleven for the Hawkeyes at
their thirty six yard line.
Speaker 8 (01:24:24):
Go great job there, Corey Walker did a really good
job of kind of holding the point, and then you
forced that ball back inside. You let your linebackers come
flowing downhill, and here you're sitting in a position third
and ten.
Speaker 11 (01:24:36):
You need to get off the field.
Speaker 5 (01:24:37):
Mason Posa for right back or the linebacking corps for
Wisconsin cooping right up next to the center are receivers
right one on the left snap their Ganowski Posta drops
back and coverage ty Poker. Ganowski pos it down thirty
five running left, Posta waiting for him, and down goes
the Iowa quarterback. Sebastian Cheeks in there as well across
(01:25:00):
the forty to the forty one of Iowa. Fourth down
and six, the Badger defense will get the stop.
Speaker 8 (01:25:07):
Exactly what they needed to stop and give your offense
some time try and get this thing leveled out a
little bit before the half there, Wiscott Trussel brings both
of his linebackers kind of mug them up into that
a gap, and that makes your offensive adjustments protection wise,
I think you're able to get some pressure just with
the four man rush.
Speaker 11 (01:25:26):
Gronowski shuffles out, you get off the field.
Speaker 5 (01:25:29):
Ree'ze Dacon on the punts line of scrimmage, the forty
one of Iowa snap the Dacon and the kick is away.
Fair catch signal by Tyrell Henry. He'll make it inside
the twenty yard line. That's us Jade Ballard actually with
the faircatch signal there is he's handling the punt return
on that particular occasion, a forty two yard punt Badger
(01:25:50):
starting at their eighteen yard line, four sixteen left in
the half. It's twenty to nothing, Iowa leading Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (01:25:59):
And we saw, oh what Grimes really was thinking about
doing there on that last drive, and that was giving
his offensive line and Dylan Jones a chance to re
establish some things running the football and some good successful runs,
some big chunk plays, nine ten yard runs, and unfortunately
just keep kicking themselves in the foot, not being able
to sustain.
Speaker 5 (01:26:19):
Need to do it here, shotgun formation, double wide to
the ride on first down, Simmons takes rolling right looking
throwing and Vinnie Anthony trying to pull it down, and
he does across the twenty five yard line, falls out
of bounds at the twenty six on a.
Speaker 6 (01:26:36):
Gain of eight.
Speaker 5 (01:26:36):
Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, William Contreras a solo shots one nothing
brew Crewe leading the Cubs in the winner take all Game.
Speaker 8 (01:26:46):
Five, assuming he had have done some type of awesome
batflip with that right.
Speaker 5 (01:26:50):
Maybe a little phone call gesture second down and two
for the Badgers at their own twenty six yard lineleas
go four used to hand off Dylan Jones right ahead
across a thirty yard line, gets thrown down by the
cornerback DJ Hall, but a first down of the thirty
two yard line of the gain of six. The Badgers
(01:27:12):
trying to get something going here is we're down to
three twenty five left in the half.
Speaker 11 (01:27:16):
I just love what he's doing there.
Speaker 8 (01:27:17):
You pull Kadonko the right guard, and he ends up
cutting back off of that. Usually you want to follow
your your guards pulling, but he sees a little pile
and Renfro does a great job finishing.
Speaker 11 (01:27:27):
Love how Dylan Jones approaches here.
Speaker 5 (01:27:29):
Three receivers left, one on the right for the Wisconsin
thirty two yard line first and ten for the Badgers.
Three zero five left for the first half, twenty to nothing.
Iowa Simmons back to throw. Iowa rushing for Simmons chased
off to his right. Throw in gets caught by Mason
down of the forty yard line of Iowa in tringer
Well pump him out of bow. So there you go.
Lance Mason, who dropped one on fourth down, gathers this
(01:27:53):
and the Badgers are into Hawkeyes territory.
Speaker 2 (01:27:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:27:55):
I love the decision there by Hunter Simmons.
Speaker 8 (01:27:57):
He stays in the pocket, He ends up Llewell and
ends up getting a little bit of pressure in the middle.
Speaker 11 (01:28:02):
He rolls away from that while keeping his eyes downfield.
Speaker 8 (01:28:05):
Mason gives himself a big target and you're able to
get a big chunk play.
Speaker 5 (01:28:09):
Game of twenty nine Chris Brooks fitting Anthony double wide
to the left eye backs with Jackson Acer and Dylan Jones.
Simmons pulls back hand off the Jones and he's hit
behind the line of scrimmage. That was rex Roth because
they were crowding the box and the linebacker rex Roth
makes the tackle behind the line of scrimmage, back of
(01:28:29):
the forty two yard line of Iowa. Loss of three
second down to thirteen.
Speaker 8 (01:28:33):
Yeah, and Iowa's doing some things late here and trying
to disrupt what Wisconsin's doing.
Speaker 11 (01:28:38):
That play needs to be checked.
Speaker 8 (01:28:39):
You have nobody to a confer ex Rot there and
he just comes unblocked. That That is one of those
in this you're asking a lot. I understand that, but
you have to get out of that play. That play
had no chance to be successful.
Speaker 5 (01:28:50):
We'll keep it here as we hit the two minute timeouts.

Varsity Network app Now, well, we mentioned a couple of
minutes ago that it was Jaden Ballard on the putt
returning signal for the fair catch. That's normally the job
of Tyrrell Henry, but it's a little bit banged up.
Speaker 6 (01:29:25):
Patrick.
Speaker 9 (01:29:25):
What do you have on Henry On Wisconsin's last possession,
Henry kind of limped off the field and it kind
of went unnoticed by most people, but turns out he
was a lower body injury and he's questionable for returning
this game.
Speaker 10 (01:29:36):
So you tack that onto the Trutch Kakahuna, and Derrian
dupri injuries.
Speaker 9 (01:29:40):
And now that's three Wisconsin's skilled position players that are
at least unavailable for the moment.
Speaker 5 (01:29:46):
Yiesh that kind of a first half and three three
turnovers that Iowa has converted into twenty points. And it's
not like the Iowa offense has had to do a
lot the total yards one twenty four to one seventeen,
but those turnovers are just being a killer here for Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (01:30:06):
The short fields and the points. And now what I
like here is you're down twenty nothing. And again, I
think coaches always go into these games and they have
ideas on how things are gonna play out, and you
kind of plan accordingly. And I think that's probably why
Luke punted the first time around on that fourth and one.
You're thinking one way, and obviously when you turn the
(01:30:26):
football over and give short fields the game can change.
Speaker 11 (01:30:30):
But what Grimes has done is he is stuck with
the run.
Speaker 8 (01:30:32):
Now you're seeing Hunterson make a couple of nice throws,
the one big play to Mason, and now you're in position.
But this is the hard part of this game, and
that's where it is a lot on your quarterback to
make sure you're checking to the right play and you're
having it.
Speaker 11 (01:30:46):
And what I always doing is they're doing things late.
Speaker 8 (01:30:49):
They're gonna do what I think really smart teams do
with young quarterbacks. You try and confuse and make them
think more than they want to. And that was the
play on first down where you're getting a really nice
rhythm and you have a what three yard lost run.
Now you're sitting here in second and thirteen, which nobody
wants to be in.
Speaker 5 (01:31:06):
Well, you're right about with Hunter Simmons. Now he's a
grad student, but he's inexperienced as a quarterback. So you
say a young quarterback, he played in eleven games at SIU.
Last year played in five, started three and that was
his season he got hurt. So you know somebody who's
been around the block a lot at the college level
but hasn't played a lot, and certainly at this level.
(01:31:29):
And I would say this, the crowd has turned out here.
Speaker 6 (01:31:32):
I was skeptic.
Speaker 5 (01:31:33):
I don't know what the final turnstile is going to be,
but it really looks as though it has filled in nicely.
So these are two games for Hunter Simmons where he
is playing in front of thousands more fans than he
ever played in at Southern Illinois and against the defense
that he probably didn't see the likes of.
Speaker 11 (01:31:50):
Either, no doubt about it. It's that this is the
growing process.
Speaker 8 (01:31:55):
And yeah, it's about experience, and it's about how comfortable
you are in this system that you're in and you
get thrown into the fire, you're gonna make some mistakes.
Speaker 11 (01:32:04):
It's about overcoming when that happens.
Speaker 5 (01:32:07):
Cubs have just matched the Brewers long ball one to
one in the second inning. You got the missions on
the mound, gave one up ball at the forty two
of Iowa was second down and thirteen for the Badgers
snapped the Simmons back to throw under some pressures, ball
batted high in the air. That's incomplete. That was Max
Leeuellen getting in there on Hunter Simmons. That ball hung
(01:32:30):
in the air for a while. Incomplete pass. Third down
and thirteen now for Wisconsin at the Iowa forty two
with a minute fifty four left in.
Speaker 11 (01:32:38):
The half, and that it was blocked up.
Speaker 8 (01:32:40):
It wasn't like Llewellyn came flying off the edge. Tight
end actually was holding him, holding him, and that's where
Hunter Simmons was going. That's again trying to figure you
get your hands up in there. Llewellen's a really good
football player able to bat it down. Luckily, ball fell
to the turf.
Speaker 5 (01:32:54):
Two receivers right, one on the left, Dylan Jones to
the right of Hunter Simmons. On third down and thirteen,
Simmons takes Iowa's sending for Simmons looking looking, winds it up,
throws it deep down the middle. Jayden Bellat broke it
up in the ends on TJ. Hall with the defensive play.
The Badger's begging for a flag and they're not getting it.
Speaker 8 (01:33:20):
Certainly felt like he hooked his hip as he was
going in. Now, really good protection. You cannot ask for
better protection. Hunter Simmons lays it up there and he
turns his hip here. I'm gonna be honest with you.
If it's the other way, I'm not asking for it.
Speaker 5 (01:33:38):
Yeah, thank you. Not a ton there.
Speaker 11 (01:33:41):
You're right, you're right, I'm not asking for it.
Speaker 5 (01:33:45):
Badger's punting now on fourth and thirteen at the Iowa
forty two yard line. Snapped to Bertrams and the kick
is away fair catch signaled by Weijen, and he'll make
it about the six yard line in Iowa territory, you know,
Legion and the long snapper Nick Levy talking a little bit.
We have a minute forty left in the half. Both
(01:34:07):
teams have all of their timeouts. It's twenty to nothing,
Iowa leading Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (01:34:16):
And this will be interesting if I'm Iowa, you know,
do you sit and you know they're happier than to
clam at twenty to nothing, but you know you want more.
Wisconsin has its timeouts. This will be an interesting little
operation here. I would think Iowa would be very conservative.
And then you wonder does Wisconsin use their timeouts? And
if you get a stop and you leave it at
(01:34:37):
second and nine or better, you take your time outs
trying to get get the football back.
Speaker 5 (01:34:42):
Ben Barton and Charles Perkins part of the interior of
that Badger's defense now on the line on first down
and on big hole straight ahead half to ten across
the fifteen yard line and thrown downs Caamari Molten at
the eighteen yard line, and just like that gain of
twelve at a first down for Iowa.
Speaker 8 (01:34:58):
I guess Wisconsin doesn't need to worry about using this
time out, sir.
Speaker 5 (01:35:03):
Down to a minute thirty left in the first half,
trips to the left, Molten stays in there at running back.
Granowski takes receiver screen left side, caught by Anderson across
the twenty yard line, and he'll get out of bounds
pulled to the boundary over there by Matt Young at
the twenty two yard line, and that'll stop the clock
until the next snap. A minute twenty you left till halftime.
That was a gain of four second down and six.
Speaker 8 (01:35:26):
You could tell I would definitely feels a heck of
a lot more confident in what they're doing offensively than
maybe what we've seen in past years.
Speaker 11 (01:35:33):
There in the past, I think you would have definitely
seen them run, run, run, and go into the locker room.
Here trying to be aggressive.
Speaker 6 (01:35:41):
Are the receivers right.
Speaker 5 (01:35:44):
The lips to the left, Granowski throwing over the middle,
caught by Molten twenty five thirty Molten thirty five yard line,
and he'll fight his way near the thirty eight first
down Iowa as the Hawkeyes have something going with them.
Speaker 6 (01:35:56):
An at eleven left in the first half, a little.
Speaker 8 (01:35:58):
Quick, easy middle screen there and really well blocked by
their interior part of their offensive line getting up on
the second level of Wisconsin, clearing the way for a
big game.
Speaker 5 (01:36:07):
Austin Brown on the tackle, the Hawk guys using a
time out there first with one oh seven left in
the first half, twenty each to nothing, the Hawk eyes
leading the Badgers, moving the.
Speaker 11 (01:36:20):
Football, running it, throwing it, screen passes.
Speaker 8 (01:36:24):
I think for the most part we mentioned, Iowa has
been able to take advantage of the turnovers and in
the short fields, but they've also moved the football, and
I think for all of us that we're hoping that
this was gonna be a lot different stopping the run
and being a little more stout at the point of attack.
Iowa was already got one hundred and four yards rushing
(01:36:44):
in this first half.
Speaker 5 (01:36:49):
First half with that Wisconsin defense the time of possession,
it seems like it should be worse than it is.
Fifteen fifty for Iowa, twelve and a half minutes for Wisconsin.
But at the same time, Iowa scoring drives have been
short drops. Badger defense has just been up against it
throughout the course of the nights. One oh seven left
and the half first and ten Hawkeyes. They're on thirty
(01:37:11):
eight yard line snaffter Ganowski. Badger's trying to get pressure
up the middle right side pass that's caught across midfield
into Wisconsin territory. Cairo's skeins on the tackle. That pass
caught by Rhese Vandersey in there for the first time
this season in the first down, with the clock stopping
and now running again less than a minute left in
the half down of fifty five seconds back on the ball,
(01:37:33):
is Iowa reading it now getting off the bolt and
inside hand off inside the forty five down of the
forty yard line of Wisconsin, a gain of nine. The
Hawkeys will use their second time out. Matt Young makes
the play for Wisconsin defensively second in one Iowa the
Badger's forty yard line with forty seven seconds left in
(01:37:55):
the first half.
Speaker 8 (01:37:56):
Way too much room there, and I know it's you know,
you're in two minute here, so you're trying to kind
of balance your coverage and not giving up big plays.
Speaker 11 (01:38:05):
But that was an operation there where I don't know if.
Speaker 8 (01:38:07):
He got touched until five or six yards down the field,
and you could tell Iowa likes him. He very physical,
ran it all the way down and was kind of
barreled through Wisconsin's secondary and picked up nine yards.
Speaker 5 (01:38:21):
All of this, and remember, Iowa will receive in the
second half, So guys looking for that knockout punch here. Oh,
I'm sorry, that's right, I'm sorry. Wisconsona will get the watch, right.
Iowa did receives continent at that penalty, so Iowa won
the toss and then accepted. I'm distracted by the Brewer game.
(01:38:44):
Here's a stab aacktor Ganowski looking looking throws right side
that's caught by Williams Across at thirty five and caught
from behind by Christian Allegro at the thirty four yard line,
and that'll be a first down for Iowa with thirty
nine seconds left.
Speaker 11 (01:38:59):
In the half well, and that was tack at.
Speaker 8 (01:39:01):
Curtis had an opportunity to tackle him in bounds. He
was going to pick up the first down. Need to
get him down, not get out of bounce.
Speaker 5 (01:39:07):
Be on the ball, reading it, keeping at. Kronowski throws
right side Vanderz the catch and he is tackled by
Cairo Skeins inside the thirty the market the twenty nine
yard line. The play went out of bounds twenty nine
seconds left in the half, so that'll keep the clock
stopped until the next snap. Iowa with one time out available,
second down and five at the twenty nine of Wisconsin
(01:39:30):
with twenty nine seconds left in the first half.
Speaker 8 (01:39:32):
It doesn't feel like those are big things, but you
need to get Ioa to use that last time out,
and it's all part of the mechanics of trying to
stop somebody tackle him in bounce.
Speaker 6 (01:39:40):
The receivers left one on the right.
Speaker 5 (01:39:43):
Snapped their Kanowski four man Russia throw over the middle
of Anami with the catch and he's hit right away
by Matt Young at the twenty six of Wisconsin, two
yards short, twenty seconds in counting left in the half,
third down and two down to fifteen seconds, Jacob Gill
getting back into formation down at ten seconds left in
(01:40:03):
the half, third down, here's the hand of flags are
down hitting inside the twenty five yard line, molten down
to the twenty three. There are penalty markers down and
this is gonna go against Iowa.
Speaker 8 (01:40:16):
It just never felt like they got set to the
position there. Whyouts are sprinting from the end zone and
I'm guessing that's what the call is gonna.
Speaker 12 (01:40:25):
Be illegal formation offense, too many players in the backfield,
five yard penalty, third down.
Speaker 5 (01:40:36):
So now they're gonna go ahead and kick the field
goal here. They'll send Drew Stevens out there, and this
is gonna be about a forty eight or a forty
nine yard try, forty nine yard attempt just inside the
right hash mark.
Speaker 8 (01:40:51):
You gotta be nice here, block blocks Kidney scoop and
score type deal that because.
Speaker 5 (01:40:56):
Of fun those bonus points. Proceed to start the second half. Yeah,
time out, take in here with three seconds left in
the half, twenty each or nothing. Iowa leading Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (01:41:08):
Now didn't that kind of feel out of character though?
Where Wisconsin goes down gets it punts him down, and
I don't know if they start at the seven or
eight yard line, and you kind of were thinking, you
know what's gonna end up happening here. I would have
bet in the past, Iowa would have been more than content,
especially up twenty to just kind of take it in.
Speaker 11 (01:41:27):
It's different.
Speaker 8 (01:41:28):
I think they feel good about their offense, and they
feel good that they were able to.
Speaker 11 (01:41:32):
Go down and move the football.
Speaker 8 (01:41:33):
And I'm surprised that Wisconsin gave up as much as
they did to put Stevens in a position here to
take a twenty three to nothing lead here right before
the half.
Speaker 5 (01:41:42):
I were using his final time out when you get
that twelve yard run right away, so then you can
start going with the little tempo. Here forty nine yard
attempt inside the right hash with three seconds left in
the first half. This will be the final play of
the first half here at Camp Randall Stadium. Here's a
staff placement made the case because away has plenty of
distance and it is good. Forty nine yard pope from
(01:42:05):
Drew Stevens. And that's how the first half ends here
in Madison, all Iowa up as the Badgers with three turnovers,
and the Hawkeys go into the locker.
Speaker 6 (01:42:15):
Room in command.
Speaker 5 (01:42:18):
Here tonight we are at halftime at Camp Randall, Iowa,
twenty three Wisconsin.

So with you at halftime at Camp Randall's Stadium. It
is twenty with twenty three to nothing Iowa at the break.
This game gets explained relatively easily. It's hard to look
at the scoreboard and say, well, that's an easy way
to explain away the first half. Iowa started the game
on three plays, seven yards in a punt, and Wisconsin
then went six plays twenty two yards in a punt.
Speaker 30 (01:45:36):
Iowa had a long drive and scored.
Speaker 28 (01:45:38):
A field goal love and play sixty six yards thirty
two yard field goals three nothing. Then, over the span
of the next four plays the Badger's four offensive plays,
the Badgers had an interception bat at Lona scrimmage up
in the air, and they had an interception that was
returned to the one yard line.
Speaker 30 (01:45:55):
Over a span of.
Speaker 28 (01:45:56):
Four plays, Iowa had two interceptions and then three plays
later Wisconsin had another turnover in their following possession. So
a span of a nine total Wisconsin offensive plays led
to three turnovers. Iowa then began their drives at the
twenty four yard line of Wisconsin, the one yard line
(01:46:18):
of Wisconsin in the twenty eight yard line, and in
that they were able to score seventeen points. It's twenty
three to nothing at the break. You cannot win football
games when you lose turnover battles. You cannot win football
games when you make mental errors. And Wisconsin, who had
had this game circled essentially forever since last year in
(01:46:42):
early November, when they lost forty two to ten at Iowa,
they circled this one, and the circle is turned into
a square. Not a very good first half four Wisconsin.
It's twenty three nothing at the break. Our halftime American

three minutes left in the second quarter. Perduing Minnesota playing
in the Twin Cities. That game is tied ten ten
midway through the second quarter. Now, let's take you around
the Big Ten from earlier today. Number one Ohio State
at seventeenth ranked Illinois thirty four to sixteen. It is
the Buck guys who will come into Wisconsin at six
(01:50:28):
and oh, three and oh in the Big Ten one
week from today. They win it thirty four to sixteen.
Number seven Indiana. This is the big one of the day.
They play at third ranked Oregon and the Hoosiers win
it thirty to twenty. Mendoza two hundred and fifteen yards
and a TD in the air and the Indiana Hoosiers
are six and oh.
Speaker 30 (01:50:49):
They are three and oh in the Big Ten.
Speaker 28 (01:50:51):
And Oregon, who Wisconsin will visit in two weeks, falls
to five and one and two and one in the league.
UCLA went on the road and beat Michigan State thirty
eight thirteen. The Bruins are two and one in the
Big Ten and the Spartans ow to three and then
this Big One. Remember all the way back to preseason rankings,
Penn State was preseason rank number one in the country.
(01:51:12):
They just dropped to oh and three in the Big Ten.
They lost it home today to Northwestern twenty two to
twenty one, and Drew Aller is feared to have broken
his ankle and his season is over. James Franklin confirming
that after the game, James Franklin's got his own set
of issues. As Penn State is now three and three
overall and owen three in the Big Ten. Nebraska went
(01:51:33):
on the road and beat Maryland thirty four to thirty one.
Riola in that game went twenty for twenty nine two
hundred and sixty yards and four tds as Nebraska improves
to two and one in the Big Ten, five and

I'm Mike Keller, Bill Schmid as our postgame host, and Billie,
I don't know what you're talking about tonight, Let's bring
you in on this. Wisconsin goes on their first possession,
six plays, twenty two yards of punts, and then Iowa
on their second possession had a sustained drive.
Speaker 30 (01:54:33):
They get three points out of it.
Speaker 28 (01:54:35):
Wisconsin goes interception on a ball bat it at the
line their next possession on the second play, and interception
on a ball that you don't know Hunter Simmons didn't
see the defensive end who had moved over into that spot.
And then Wisconsin punted on the following one, and then
throw a backwards pass that's ruled the fumble for turnover
on the second play.
Speaker 30 (01:54:54):
Then, I mean, I don't know what to say.
Speaker 44 (01:54:57):
Yeah, it's the self inflicted wounds, Mike are the most
frustrating because a year ago, after a hard fought game
against Penn State and then against Oregon the week after,
you just didn't bring the same kind of attention to
detail that you need to be at a level of
focus to be able to cute playing and play out
(01:55:18):
I mean, those two touchdown drives are their shortest drives
of the day, and that's the most frustrating part. Where
you gave yourself every opportunity to stay in the football
game a week ago, you've done the exact opposite through
thirty minutes here, and there's a reason why it's a
three score game at twenty three zip here after thirty
minutes if.
Speaker 28 (01:55:35):
You wanted to look for positives, Dylan Jones eight carries
forty four yards after Dupre left and we don't know
if he'll returned. Dylan Jones ran it hard, but you're
down twenty three points. Hard to commit to the ground game, yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:55:48):
Hard to do.
Speaker 44 (01:55:48):
So, However, if you're gonna be able to put together
some kind of positivity, you're gonna need attitude plays like
the runs that Dylan Jones was doing off right tackle
in that second to last year with the first half, listen,
as much as you want to win the football game
and you need to put yourself in every position possible
to give yourself a chance here, you've got to be
trying to build some positive momentum throughout not only today,
(01:56:11):
but the next seven weeks. And that starts by physically
playing a little bit more, you know, dominating brand of football.
Speaker 28 (01:56:19):
On the other questions, i'd have Billy, you knew that
the forty two number that had been vandied about all
off season about Iowa forty two to ten. Last year,
Wisconsin got a personal foul before when the two teams
ran out on the field. There have been extra curriculars
that Wisconsin's fighting. But you have to fight with the
controlled digression.
Speaker 44 (01:56:40):
You have to fight at the right time. You have
to fight in between the whistle, and that's gonna be
one that you know. I don't know exactly what Luke
Fickle's message can be at halftime when this is the
situation that you're in, but I imagine that's one of
the biggest parts of it, Mike, because if you're gonna
be able to do something positive on the scoreboard, that
kind of fight and that kind of attitude needs to
come in between the whistle and and I fully assume
(01:57:02):
that's the main focus of the message here, because you
can't be doing that if you're gonna already put yourself
behind the eight ball in number of different ways.
Speaker 28 (01:57:08):
Will you be able to manage if that game goes
fifteen innings tonight an American Family Field.
Speaker 30 (01:57:13):
It's one to one going to the bottom of the third.
Speaker 44 (01:57:15):
I would really like it because the postgame show host
fight it must be home.
Speaker 28 (01:57:18):
You might see the end, oh boy and any so
you're now twenty three nothing, Wisconsin will start with the football.
Is there is there an opening drive hope that you
get back in the game here at this moment.
Speaker 44 (01:57:30):
Yeah, And I think a lot of it has to
do with it. And we just joked about it. Committing
to the run tough to do down twenty three nothing.
But there's still, you know, seven possessions in this game.
Now you're counting them. What you need to be able
to play with a little bit of pace, play with
a little bit of urgency. But you're gonna have to
be able to run the football if you're gonna get
into this game. Hunter Simmons can't throw the ball all
over the yard, especially if they're already pitting their yours back.
Speaker 30 (01:57:52):
Billy very good will listen on the postgame side of
this one.

Speaker 5 (02:00:52):
It's twenty three to nothing, Iowa leading or Wisconsin. Before
we take a look at some of the first half stads.
Let's first plaut ten, second for station identification, ten for
an ID. This is Badger football from Learfield. Twenty three
to nothing the Hawkeys leading wisconsint Camari Moulton with ten
carries for seventy yards including a touchdown. Philla Jones eight
(02:01:14):
toads for forty four yards for the Badgers, Mark Gronowski
tender knee and all has certainly has been effective. He's
eleven of sixteen seventy nine yards to throw an interception,
Hunter Simmons. It was a tough goal. Four of thirteen
sixty yards. Two interceptions, also a backwards pass that was
not He did not connect with Darian Duprie. The loose
(02:01:36):
ball was scooped up by Iowa. Just that kind of
a half of the Badgers with the three first half turnovers.
The Iowa scoring drives a thirty two yard Drew Stevens
field goal that capped a sixty six yard possession. Otherwise
their scoring drives they just really not had to cover
much of anything. Twenty four yards, a half a yard,
twenty two yards, and at the end of the half
(02:01:58):
of sixty three yard drive that led to the Drew
Stevens forty nine yard field goal twenty three to nothing Iowa.
The Badgers will be receiving to start the second half,
and well, here we go. Let's just see if they
can mark do something to build on here moving forward.
Fickles talked about, you know, if your situations like you
(02:02:19):
go hard, go all out, don't pay attention to the scoreboard.
Let's see what this team has to offer.
Speaker 11 (02:02:24):
And we've seen some things.
Speaker 8 (02:02:25):
I know, you know, obviously we're struggling at the quarterback position,
but I really love what Dylan Jones is doing.
Speaker 11 (02:02:31):
And obviously dupre got hurt.
Speaker 8 (02:02:32):
We don't know exactly what his status is gonna be,
but I do think there's some things running the football
that you can kind of hang your hat on in
that first half that you can build off of, but
you're gonna have to you're down twenty three, You're gonna
have to make some plays with your quarterback. You're gonna
need to get some big, chunk plays, and those things
have been really difficult to come by so far throughout
this season for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Speaker 6 (02:02:54):
Drew Stevens said, to kick off.
Speaker 5 (02:02:58):
Minnie Anthony Kadamelly deep, Badgers will go south to north,
right to left. As we view it, Stevens on the
approach and the kick is away and again no return,
and Badgers will begin at their twenty five yard line.
Speaker 9 (02:03:10):
As we check in with Patrick, Matt, you mentioned it,
Matt that that's exactly the message that was happening at
halftime is you can't look at the scoreboard, you can't
worry about being down twenty three points.
Speaker 10 (02:03:20):
You have to take this play by play, You have
to take this punch by punch.
Speaker 9 (02:03:24):
That's kind of the metaphor that they're using at halftime,
and it starts right now with this offense. It's really
the only option that they have at this point after
what was a rough, rough first half. Again, this offense
will be without crutch Kekahuna and Darien Dupree for the
time being.
Speaker 5 (02:03:40):
Yowen Jones the running back behind Simmons, and the handoff
goes to Jones, hits it off the right side across
the twenty five yard line and he gets dragged down
near the thirty That linebacking corps for Iowa Carson Shire
we mentioned earlier Jayden Montgomery, the son of Jerry Montgomery,
the former Packers assistant coach Jayden Montgomer getting the run
(02:04:02):
tonight because of an injury that has Jayden Harrol out
for the night. He was their team's leading tackler, but
he is injured and unavailable. Second down and we'll call
it six for the Badgers, just across their twenty nine
yard line. Simmons will work under center. Now i backs
with Jackson Acer and Dylan Jones, who's the hand off.
The Jones runs into Carson Shire, who wraps him up
(02:04:26):
and takes him to the ground of the thirty one
yard line on a gain of two, and it's third
down and four.
Speaker 8 (02:04:32):
A little soone playoff to the left and just Iowa
did a good job of not biting on that little
fake reverse spin up by the quarterback and stayed home.
And that sets up this third critical here, third and
four here to get something positive going.
Speaker 5 (02:04:48):
In this second half, Badgers were two of six on
third down. Likewise, Iowa in the first half three receivers left,
one on the right. Simmons in the shotgun takes the snap,
swings it high, pulled down by Jones, and he has
stopped just across the thirty yard line. Had to loop
that pass, a lot of air under it, and really
just did not have a chance to develop that play,
(02:05:10):
and the Badgers end up four yards short racing over
there with Shire along with the TJ. Hall, the cornerback.
Speaker 8 (02:05:17):
What Wisconsin tried to do there is usually you see
a screen pass and you see a kind of a
convoy going one way. Will they double screen that. They
ended up having their center, left guard, left tackle go left,
right guard, right.
Speaker 11 (02:05:29):
Tackle go right. Iowa didn't bite. They stayed home. And
now we're punting the football.
Speaker 5 (02:05:33):
Atticus Bertram's with the kick in the air, Cadenwigen the
chance to play it. He will at to twenty three,
running left, twenty five to thirty legion to the thirty
five to the forty yard line. It was driven down
across the forty to the forty one zero in r
net and punt coverage forty five yards on the punt,
eighteen on the return, good field position for the Hawk
(02:05:54):
guys to have their first possession of the third quarter.
Twelve fifty eight left in the third quarter of play,
twenty three to nothing.
Speaker 11 (02:06:02):
Iowa, boy, he just ain't scared pack there.
Speaker 34 (02:06:04):
Oh he's not.
Speaker 5 (02:06:05):
Hey.
Speaker 8 (02:06:05):
They's had the one where the you know, we had
our gunner right in his face.
Speaker 11 (02:06:08):
This one here again. He trusts himself.
Speaker 8 (02:06:12):
He is a big explosive playmaker and he's trying to
find something to do every time you can get it.
Speaker 11 (02:06:17):
He he's a heck of a weapon for Iowa.
Speaker 6 (02:06:21):
Camari Moltzen.
Speaker 5 (02:06:22):
They're running back forty one yard line Iowa territory, going
north to south, left to right. As we view it,
Banowski pulls back from center, hands off the Molten off
the left edge, and he'll drive it up to the
forty five yard line of the gain of four. Mason
Reiger on the tackles, second out and six for the Hawkeyes.
Speaker 8 (02:06:38):
And you know, the thing coming into this season for
the Wisconsin Badger defense was lost yardage plays get.
Speaker 11 (02:06:45):
In the backfield, and we've seen more of that throughout
the year.
Speaker 8 (02:06:48):
But when you're running against an Iowa offense, you know
what they're gonna do. You have to disrupt what they do,
and unfortunately, so far, we haven't done that on enough occasions.
Speaker 5 (02:06:59):
Second down and six, Granowski will go under center region
wide left motions, right, little jet motion of their hand
on Bolton, big hole up the middle fifty forty five
of Wisconsin and he gets wrapped up by Matt Young
at the forty one of the Badgers. A lot of
rooms straight ahead. First down, Iowa back in a Wisconsin territory.
Speaker 8 (02:07:19):
Wisconsin brought Agart off the edge and he missed or
he was unable to bring him down, and then it
kind of just parted the middle of this defense for
Wisconsin wide open their big big run back.
Speaker 5 (02:07:32):
On the move or the Iowa Hawkeys of the Wisconsin
forty one yard line hand off the Moulton off the
right side, breaks a tackle and fights his way down
to the thirty seven of Wisconsin. Ben Barton in there
Young as well, and it looked like JVR sugs off
the pile. I mentioned Mark Gronowski, he has started this
game that bye week, very beneficial for him. He was
(02:07:53):
hurt in the fourth quarter of their Indiana game. Very
highly regarded transfer from South Dakota State led that program
to national titles in twenty twenty two and again a
year later. Bill at the thirty seven yard line of
Wisconsin's second down and six, Savior Williams the running back,
and they'll feed it to them. Williams inside the thirty five,
inside the thirty and Sebastian cheeks. We'll stop them at
(02:08:17):
the twenty nine yard line, first down, Iowa.
Speaker 8 (02:08:20):
And you're starting to see their you know, Barton and
Suggs come off the field, they bring in Lane, they
bring in Peterson, and Iowa still just continues to get
guys move displaced out of the way, and you're they're
seeing something that they like. Obviously their zone play, but
now they're really attacking the middle of Wisconsin's defense and
they're having a lot of success.
Speaker 5 (02:08:40):
Well, the twenty nine of Wisconsin first and ten, Williams
remains the running back. Andersy out wide to the rights
region to the left. Here's the handoff to Williams. Big
hold twenty five, twenty breaking right fifteen ten five touchdown Iowa.
Savior Williams a twenty nine yard spread to the end zone,
(02:09:00):
making twenty nine to nothing the Hawkeyes.
Speaker 8 (02:09:07):
And I just mentioned it right up the middle and
there bad angles once they got into the second. Once
he got into the second, I don't even know if
anybody touched him. The middle of the defense kind of
just again parted ways. It ran it north and south,
and then he outran the angle and.
Speaker 11 (02:09:24):
He's not good.
Speaker 5 (02:09:27):
Drew Stevens out there for the extra points. It is
in the air and it is good. UW Athletics proud

with ten thirty left in the third quarter. Another injury update,
Badgers tied in. Tucker Ashcraft listed his questionable upper body injuries, so.
Speaker 11 (02:12:10):
That always stinks.
Speaker 8 (02:12:11):
He battled it, competed to get his way back out there,
and you know you hate to see that with guys
that you only get so many of these opportunities, and
that stinks for Tucker.
Speaker 5 (02:12:22):
Yeah, we saw him get in there at Michigan last
week and he's banged up in training camp. He's just
had no luck. And there's a line of Badgers who
can say much the same thing as Steven's.
Speaker 6 (02:12:37):
With this kick, Vinni Anthony a.
Speaker 5 (02:12:38):
Couple of yards deep, coming out to the five right side,
ten fifteen to the twenty. Anthony spins off a couple
of kick cover men and we'll advance up to the
twenty five yard line and the Badgers will start there
first and ten, and.
Speaker 8 (02:12:51):
I think that'd be a good place to start. I
thought last week, you know, with Hunter Simmons first start,
they were really deliberate.
Speaker 11 (02:12:58):
You saw it tonight.
Speaker 8 (02:12:59):
I think with Track trying to do, you know, find
ways to get him the football, and I think you
have to do that with Vinnie Anthony.
Speaker 49 (02:13:05):
Now.
Speaker 8 (02:13:05):
I know it's thirty thirty to nothing and you're you're
scrambling and you're gonna need to go up tempointer and
need to do some things differently.
Speaker 11 (02:13:11):
But I think Vinnie Anthony is one.
Speaker 8 (02:13:13):
Of your leaders. He showed last week in Michigan. Find
ways to get him the football.
Speaker 5 (02:13:19):
Two receivers to the lefts one on the right, Vinnie
in motion to the right. Here's the hand off to
Dylan Jones room up the middle, twenty five across the
thirty yard line. The safety Xavier Wampa up to make
the stop of the thirty two yard line gain of
eight second down and two.
Speaker 11 (02:13:35):
And that's what's frustrating.
Speaker 8 (02:13:36):
We're seeing a lot of this where you're getting some
good push and Dylan Jones is finding the right spots.
Speaker 11 (02:13:43):
His patience has been good.
Speaker 8 (02:13:44):
He's running incredibly hard, He's doing everything that you want
to do and unfortunately just unable to sustain anything.
Speaker 5 (02:13:54):
Go pistol again, Aker to the right of the quarterback
Jones behind Hunter Simmons. It's the snap hands at the
Jones runs into Shire up at the thirty three yard line,
needing the thirty four. So a third down coming up
here and a yard to go for Wisconsin.
Speaker 8 (02:14:14):
Not just too many guys down in the box again,
and you know your I was trying to play this
out and force things back to cut back to where
they have bodies in their linebackers and safeties have done
a really good job of kind of staying the course there,
keeping it, keeping their gap integrity.
Speaker 5 (02:14:30):
On that play, Anthony slot to the left Simmons under
center Jones the running back.
Speaker 6 (02:14:38):
Nine O eight left of the third quarter.
Speaker 5 (02:14:41):
Simmons will head off to Dylan Jones and he will
get the first down. Not easy, but he got there.
Up across the thirty five to the thirty six yard line.
Speaker 8 (02:14:52):
Yeah, not blocked, not a ton, didn't need a ton,
and God exactly what they're looking for, and that's Dylan
Jones is showing a bunch of different things today. It's
a tough, hard one two yard run when you needed it.
He's spinning, He's not allowing one guy to bring him down.
I am really impressed with how he's running the football tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:15:10):
Yeah, he's been running hard and he remains in there.
Trips to the left on first and ten at the
thirty six of Wisconsin, another chance for Jones, runs into
Shire again, wraps him up and pulls him down at
the thirty eight or thirty nine yard line, gain of
two or three on the play second un coming up
(02:15:30):
with the Badgers, we'll say the better part of three.
Baal just shy of the thirty nine yard line, A
long seven to go.
Speaker 8 (02:15:36):
I try a little gap scheme there. You've seen a
lot of zone tonight, and that was the case. You
pulled Brunner up from his left guard spot, pulled him
around the right side and were able to pick up
two or three yards.
Speaker 5 (02:15:47):
Anthony Eugenie Hilton, Chris Brooks saw to the left pistol
formation Jones behind Simmons. Simmons will give it to Jones
again up the right hash mark across the forty yard
line and he gets covered up at about the forty
two Jadon Montgomery getting in there for the Hawkeys along
with Aaron Gray, who's a defensive tackle.
Speaker 6 (02:16:09):
Third down and four for the Badgers.
Speaker 8 (02:16:11):
That good gap, good sound gap integrity there by or
by Iowa's defense and setting up here a third and
fourth crowd getting a little antsy here as we continue
to run the football, and I think they're looking to
see if we can air it out a little bit.
Speaker 5 (02:16:28):
Slot left, slot rights, heyde Yakamelli, here's the running back
breaks in motion to the left. Simmons back to throw
for man rush, right side pass Anthony the catch, and
he'll step out of bounds on the far side of
first down up to the forty seven yard line. Well,
you mentioned at taosh you Vinny with those nine catches
last week gets a grab here and extends the possession
(02:16:51):
for Wisconsin.
Speaker 11 (02:16:52):
Yeah, and you love that. It's a third and four.
Speaker 8 (02:16:54):
You gotta have it. You need to go to your
guy and that just simple. He found a way to
get open, is able to pick up a first down here.
Speaker 11 (02:17:01):
Keep this drive going.
Speaker 5 (02:17:02):
Six forty five left, third quarter, thirty to nothing. Iowa
high backsac Or the full back, Jackamelli the tail back.
Simmons pulls back from center and around Vinnie bottled it
picks it up inside his own forty yard line, and
Shier made him pay. So just ait end around. Now
(02:17:22):
they can't execute that back at the thirty eight yard line.
That is a loss of nine second and nineteen for Wisconsin.
Speaker 11 (02:17:31):
You're trying to do something, get an explosive play. Iowa
had it covered really well. I think they're obviously in
tune with what's going on.
Speaker 8 (02:17:38):
I've said a bunch tonight that they've kept really good
gap integrity. They haven't flown and chased the ball. They're
doing what they're supposed to do in that time. A fumble,
a little kick, a little boot, and you lose nine.
Speaker 5 (02:17:50):
Back's off set on second and long play faked Simmons
looking rips it right side, caught by Jacamelli across a
forty five across midfield. J Hall trips him up in
Iowas territory at the forty eight yard line. So that
gets them into a manageable third down here, third and
five at the Hawkeys forty eight straight.
Speaker 8 (02:18:08):
Job by Yakamell had just not given up on that play.
He ended up kind of going out towards Iowa silined
almost looked like a wheel route.
Speaker 11 (02:18:16):
Nice delivery there.
Speaker 8 (02:18:17):
By a Hunter Simmons delivering it and giving yourself a
manageable third down.
Speaker 5 (02:18:21):
In Milwaukee, Andrew Vaughn a solo Shuto Brewers in the
fourth leading the Cubs back to Madison from the forty
eight of Iowa. Third down and five three receivers left,
one on the right, Simmons will get it to Yacamell
hits it off the right side, inside the forty five
to the forty four yard line. Let's see where they market.
(02:18:42):
Looks like the forty five, so it'll be a fourth
down and two. Keep pushing it here. See if you
can keep this drive going. Less than five minutes left
in the third quarter, thirty to nothing.
Speaker 11 (02:18:55):
Iowa, and I think Iowa's okay with this.
Speaker 8 (02:18:57):
Obviously they're giving up some yards running and some things,
but I think they're fine. The clock is churning, they're
ahead by thirty. Wisconsin scrambling here to try to pick
up a fourth down.
Speaker 5 (02:19:08):
Rockermellie the running back to the left of Simmons. He
who's left one on the right. Simmons back to throw
time of the pocket, fires to the right. It is
well over Grant Steck coverage from Xavier Wampa. That pass
Steck had no chance, So the Badgers again lose the
ball on downs.
Speaker 6 (02:19:29):

Iowa's had a lot of success running into the middle
Of this badger's. Defensive LINE and i think a lot
of it is that you're asking a lot from. Your
linebackers they have to, read things and there's a lot OUT,
of rpo there's some jet, sweet things and you have
to make sure your eyes stay disciplined not getting out of.
Speaker 5 (02:25:05):
Your Gaps savior williams hit up running back down two.
Receivers Right peyton warde will motion into, the left, reading

instead of, whipping it he did a, nice soft little floaty.
Touch pass make it real easy. Catch it obviously they're
tight end and you picked up another seven or. Eight
yards turf monster, got him but they were able to
(02:25:43):
pick up the. First Down.
Speaker 5 (02:25:46):

and we've.
Speaker 8 (02:34:24):

Speaker 8 (02:34:31):
These guys you need to take a little, bit off,
you know especially if it's not a, wide receiver take
a little. Bit off He saw gronowski do that a couple.
Of times he's thrown a couple of fireballs here and
we've been unable to come down.

(02:35:50):
Out of State, of minnesota makes the tackles second down
and ten For the badgers at their twenty two.
Speaker 8 (02:35:58):
Yard, line yeah looked there as if You Know, JAKE
renfro i think just ended up getting a little bit
too soft on the edge and that gave a little
bit of room there for no no room for. Our
tailback iow did a good job of. Getting penetration.
Speaker 5 (02:36:13):
Two receivers to, the right The Freshman eugene hilton to,
The left anthony in motion to. The left he was
to hand off the yachamelle up the middle across twenty
five pedally MARKER down i Believe as jakamelly takes it
up to about the twenty eight or twenty nine, yard
land it was not a penalty marker like part of
a part of. A jersey i guess we're the. Hawk

jones Emerson, Mandel A. Guard heiberger those are all red
shirt freshmen that are getting significant run In this and
(02:40:36):
if you're looking for windows of opportunity and hope in

right as he was getting, the football just didn't really
(03:03:53):
let him find. A rhythm and last week you saw
a little bit of it EARLY and i thought tonight
it was probably his best night just running. The football
and he ends, up with, you know sixteen carries for
sixty nine yards, so far averaging four point three and
they have been hard fought yards that he has being able.

when you do that on the other side of it
and give short fields and basically gift wrap and you
fell behind seventeen to nothing after that. First quarter knew

First Time Since The big ten championship, Game twenty fourteen
wisconsin has been Shut, Out To corso ohio state to
that Blowout win in indianapolis fifty nine to nothing and
route to. A national Championship iowa blanks, wisconsin here tonight thirty,
seven to nothing again taking advantage of Early opportunities. With
(03:18:19):
Wisconsin turnovers drew stevens kicked a thirty two yard field
goal that was, without a turnover a sixty six Yard without,
a wisconsin turnover the sixty six yard drive and then
the interception started a twenty, four yard march a half
a Yard possession, After Wisconsin interceptions kamari moulton scoring, From
(03:18:39):
six yards gronowski on, A Quarterback sneak drew stevens a
twenty five yard field goal Off of, another wisconsin turnover
and you. Get the idea in a very lopsided, Game
here tonight iowa needed to get just three hundred nineteen,
yards of offense two thirds of that, on the ground
but again they didn't have to get a whole lot of.
(03:18:59):
Yards short field the absolute worst scenario. Unfolded here again
unfortunately my Mark for the, badgers it.
Speaker 8 (03:19:07):
Did and was you know from the jump you needed
to you get the penalty to, start THE game and.
I was Convinced i thought iowa would have, won the
toss they would. Have, just deferred yep give them. The
fifteen yards they were able to return a kick and
go down. And position themselves so, it you know THE whole,
day i, Thought, you know wisconsin this was going to be.
(03:19:27):
A hard, fought you know we heard about all of
the pushups and the pictures and all, of the stuff
and this was a highly motivated football team did and
you felt like they came out with a lot of
physicality early and they.
Speaker 11 (03:19:39):
Were almost probably.
Speaker 8 (03:19:40):
Too wound up but then reality hit and reality was
when you turn the football over a passkets batted up,
in the air defensive lineman, makes a play another defensive
makes a great interception, on a screen and this team,
AT this, point i mean you got to play really
good football to move the ball, with any luck and
when you continue to kind of shoot yourself in the
(03:20:01):
foot and, give them opportunities you just don't. Have a
chance and that's what. We saw today and now you just.
Speaker 5 (03:20:05):

thought all right they've got they've got a little little,
attitude going here but they didn't have the execution to.
Go With, it in iowa the team that was able to,

hold things together be able to take, advantage of opportunities
and this. Was no contest it was.
Speaker 8 (03:25:59):
Not a contest and it just this is one of

know obviously tonight is it, was not good but everything has.

to nothing a couple, Of Minutes ago mike keller caught
(03:30:53):
up With Head.
Speaker 28 (03:30:54):
Coach, luke fickle luke this is a game that your
program invested a lot in in, the off season and
from kind of, the, get, go second third, and fifth
possessions you had turnovers and. You make mistakes it's hard
to overcome three of them in.
Speaker 62 (03:31:09):
THE first, quarter i mean we'd, have to, be you
know we'd have to be a completely different team to
be able to overcome some. Of THOSE things and i
mean we got to get stops, when it happens obviously
not on. The inch line but we did not come
out to play. The GAME today, and i, am you
know lost for words because we've been talking about this
(03:31:32):
one for.
Speaker 6 (03:31:33):
Quite a while.
Speaker 28 (03:31:35):
The, mistakes by hunter as, you saw those did you
consider making a change or did you like the way
he had reacted?
Speaker 6 (03:31:45):
In the moment what.
Speaker 62 (03:31:46):
Were, THE thoughts yeah i mean it's hard. To, put
it yes they're. Really bad decisions obviously the tip balls,
one of them the one, he threw RIGHT so the
i mean there are. Some bad decisions we still fl
like he was the best thing to give us the
best chance to be able to get back in this
find a way to be able to.
Speaker 1 (03:32:04):
Move the football you came out and you could tell that.
Speaker 28 (03:32:08):
THERE was intensity i mean there was an issue before
when players are introduced and run out.
Speaker 30 (03:32:14):
Onto the field.
Speaker 28 (03:32:17):
Your players were, strained and hard but it seemed like
the turnovers.
Speaker 1 (03:32:21):
Buried you early well that's.
Speaker 62 (03:32:22):
NOT us, either i mean that's an emotional thing that,
Should never. Happen thank goodness we somewhat overcame it on
the kickoff of the team doing a great job and
tackle on the thirty because that's a lack of discipline and.
Speaker 6 (03:32:37):
That's on me.
Speaker 14 (03:32:39):
But.
Speaker 62 (03:32:39):
It wasn't emotional it was something where we wanted our
guys to understand that this had to be. An emotional
game we had to come out from the get go
and be emotional about what, as we're doing not before.
The game starts.
Speaker 28 (03:32:54):
But, we didn't luke there's no good question here but
where are you again when you visit with them now and,
think about it just moments, after the game?
Speaker 62 (03:33:02):
Where are you we got to gather our thoughts, because
you know this is this is no this Is no
position i've. Ever BEEN in and i don't mean that of.
Losing ball games i've been, Beat up before i've been.
Taking SHOTS before but i mean and, just to, play
you know, like we did and and in, what we
invested in what we had put into it to go
(03:33:23):
out there and play the way WE did, is i
mean it's. Hard to explain it's it's not fair, to
you know, to our program it's not fair, to our
fans it's not fair. To to everybody, and and, uh
you know we're gonna have to, figure it out and
we're gonna have to Go back the joe AND board
and i, challenge those guys not not, loud and voiceterous but,
just you know we're gonna find out who really wants.
Speaker 28 (03:33:45):
To, be here, luke thank you, Back to you, Matt, All.
Speaker 5 (03:33:48):
Right luke mike thank. You very much and that's probably
as subdued As We've heard luke fickle in the two
and a half years he's been the he's been the
head coach and this we've talked about rock bottoms and.
HERE'S another, one i say THERE'S been multiple i guess
you could say And, and but taos you, put it
perfectly and you played the game at.
Speaker 6 (03:34:09):
The highest level you.
Speaker 5 (03:34:10):
Knowing what's ahead you got to try to regroup because
otherwise you got two teams that can hang a hundred.
Speaker 8 (03:34:15):
On you out pride is always. A, huge part obviously
you'd love To Be chasing big ten championships and all
of the things that you set out to at the beginning.
Of a season but then there's also, the you know
the cold reality of kind of where this football team
is and you're in position if you don't, pick yourself,
Up and nobody i'm gonna, promise you this nobody's gonna feel, sorry.
(03:34:38):
For you nobody and when you're, down like this this
is where you. Really Find out like, luke just said
there not only, from the outside but in, that locker
room and there will be guys that kind of have,
one foot in. One foot out you need, both feed
in you need to jump in all in on this
because it's gonna. Get very difficult the noise is gonna,
(03:34:58):
get really loud. And your playing the best football team
on the probably in the country is coming in, here
next week and they are they're going to.
Speaker 11 (03:35:06):
