This is matt Leapeye. We welcome you two Wisconsin football
and its homecoming weekend as the Badgers draw Kirk Farnce
and the Iowa Hawkeyes and the battle for the Heartland Trophy.

The Badgers looking for their first Big Ten win of
the season after dropping their first two outings. The Hawkeys
open conference play with a winning Rutgers and then a
hard fought game where Iowa fell five points short against
Indiana a couple of weeks ago. Before we get started,
let's pause ten seconds for station identification, ten for an ID.
This is Badger Football from Learfield. I talked about it

a lot. These two programs through the years have been
built in much the same way. The fan I've always
thought are much more alike than either side wants to admit.
It is a good rivalry, it's a respectful rivalry, and
the Badgers want the bull.

Speaker 6 (02:10):
Back because I always had it for a few years.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
So that gets us to our construction business group keys

you see as the keys here tonight?

Well, like most games, I mean, turnovers always are going
to play a factor, but I really feel like tonight,
I think both offenses are going to struggle to make long,
sustainable drives. So it's gonna come down to mistakes and
who makes fewer of them at critical points, and whether
that's a fumble or a busted coverage. I just believe

(02:47):
this game will be won by the team that makes
the fewest mistakes. Both teams are going to come try
to be physical. I think Iowa felt really confident. Obviously,
what they did at Iowa City in the second half
last week I think left a big mark on this staff.
They went and addressed a lot of those issues, especially
on the defensive line. So it just feels like to

(03:07):
me and watching both of these teams play, it is
going to be tough sledding for both offenses sustain anything meaningful.
It's gonna come down to big plays in short fields.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
As Couch mentioned, it was humbling for the Badgers in
Iowa City a year ago. For more on that and
how the Badgers are kind of leaned into it. A
lot of times you hear about nah last year's last year,
they haven't taken that path. As we sent it down
to our sideline reporter Patrick Herb Patrick, the Badgers really
took that to heart what happened last fall at Kinnick Stadium,

and that's been with them for a long time throughout
their workouts.

Speaker 9 (03:45):
You're absolutely right some coaches will shy away from putting
too much importance into one game or overplaying rivalries. I
listened to Jeff Grimes talk this week. He said he's
coached under both ways. Where some people say every game
is equal, let's not put too much into it, where
others playoff rivalries. Luke Fickle is an old school Big
ten guy. He believes in rivalries. He obviously was baptized

in the Ohio State Michigan rivalry, and he has understood
the importance of them. Now that has not gone Wisconsin's
way obviously last year. They have three empty trophy cases
in their locker room right now.

Speaker 10 (04:16):
But he understands the importance. He also understands what.

Speaker 9 (04:19):
A statement game that was last year in Iowa City
and so you're right. They've geared a lot of their
offseason and their season this year to making good from
that outcome. So during the spring practice, every practice finished
with forty two push ups on the field to signify
the forty two points that Iowa put on Wisconsin in

that game.

This week, there have been.

Speaker 9 (04:41):
Pictures of the Iowa players with the Bull the Heartland
trophy plastered around the facility, including in the locker room.
In each player's locker room, the TVs in the locker
room have been running a loop of highlights of Iowa celebrating.

So they are not shying away from the importance of
this game.

Speaker 9 (04:58):
And Luke Fickle's been on ends with his team this
week trying to emphasize what it's gonna take, the physicality
and the testing of manhood, if you will, that this
game is gonna take now once they kick off. None
of that history matters. We all know that, but it's
a great tactic. It seems to put a lot of
emphasis on this. My intel from the other side says

that Iowa thinks that they've already got this game.

Speaker 10 (05:21):
Won from a mental standpoint.

Speaker 9 (05:23):
That because Wisconsin is putting so much into it Iowa
is in their heads and that's that's what my intel
tells you that they are believing.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
Heading into this one, we've had a little chirpin as
both teams come out of their tunnels and before the
opening kick we have a penalty marker out there.

Speaker 6 (05:40):
There is some chirpin.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
I mean they come in from the opposite ends of
Camp Randalls Stadium. Luke Fickle out there talking to this
officiating crew, so they were talking about that respectful rivalry
and never mind.

Speaker 8 (05:53):
Yeah, I think there was a little logo, you know,
the whole putting flags and logos. I think Iowa ventured
a little too far into the motion w unlike what's
on the block uniform WS today, and I think the
Wisconsin folks didn't appreciate it.

Speaker 11 (06:08):
I don't know what the flag what they're gonna end.

Speaker 8 (06:10):
Up calling, but there is some logo violations going on.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
And we haven't even had the coin toss yet. So
now the captain's out there, Kerry Kodonko, Aaron wit, Riley Malman,
and Darryl Peterson for Wisconsin and Peter Kahn's is the
honorary captain, part of some really really good offensive lines
and Peter a big part of that. So it's fun
to see Pete Khans back here at Camp Randall tonight.

kit is the referee, the captain's meet at midfield, and

On the opening kickoffs, so they get the penalty against Wisconsin.
I think that was Tyrese fear Breed who was doing
the chirping and Tallas you mentioned Iowa got a little
got a little on that logo a little bit Tyros
didn't particularly care.

For it, and I think we liked that part of it,
but I was actually thinking both teams would defer, but
there might even be a chance a team jumps on defense.

This penalty is why I was taking.

That absolutely yes.

And so while I love the you know, I want you.
You don't take anything from any you know that. But
there's also you have to be smart and you know,
Patrick was talking about all of the things in Iowa
kind of feeling like they're in the heads. You have
to manage your emotions too. We talk about that on
Senior Night, and it's every game. And when you do this,
now that changed already. I think how Iowa is going

to approach this.

wigion up to the thirty and he gets rocked right there.

Wisconsin Badgers. And we are underway.

I'll tell you who is very excited about that play
and that tackle is fear brief because the one thing,
you know, you get all excited, you get over the
top a little bit. The last thing you want is
to cost your football team in Wisconsin. Special teams did
a great job there picking up their teammate what could
have been a big start for Iowa. Special Teams went
down and answered the bill.

That was Grant's dean with the stick and it will
be Mark Granowski, the quarterback, the former star at South
Dakota State. Sam Phillips wide right, motions left, Granowski tenderney
and all gives it to go quick past Cadenwegian left
side and he gets hit quickly taken down Ricardo Holman
left side across the thirty to the thirty two yard

That tackle was by Rico, but that was all win.
He went and took on both of Iowa's blockers. That's
just a simple swing pass. Try to cover two WITSI
now blew up both, set up Rico for the tackle.

tied end flips to the left side of the formation.
Single back offense, Kamari Molton is the running back of
the thirty two yard line Iowa territory second.

Bolton hits it off the left edge across the thirty

And this is what we saw a lot of in
Iowa City last year.

It was just simple zone plays and thought, we're gonna
move your guys into your linebackers. Obviously, Wisconsin feels like
they're in a better spot tonight with the bigger bodies
and more bodies that can combat that.

Speaker 11 (11:14):
That was a nice run there to get started.

Speaker 5 (11:16):
I well a little better than forty eight percent on
third down. The Badger defense is stingy on third down.
Opponent's converted only a quarter of the time. Shotgun or
Gronowski seth Anderson, a receiver in motion left to right,
two receivers either side of the formation, or the eye
with thirty seven yard line scaptain Gronowski Badger's rush for
a left side pass a high one. It sails over

the head of dj Vonami that tied in across midfield
of the far side, and the Hawk guys are forced
to punch on fourth down.

Speaker 8 (11:45):
And you always wonder when a quarterback isn't able to
take all of their reps at timing early and all
at that ball. Sometimes you miss by a little bit.
That thing missed by a bunch. Here's somebody over on
the bench could have caught that. That's how far that
ball sailed.

We's dacing on the punt, averaging a bit better than
forty five yards per punts. Tyrell Henry deep at the
Badger seventeen yard line line of scrimmages. The Iowa thirty
seven snapped a dake and Badgers get some heats. The
kick is away, fair catch signaled by Henry, and he'll
make it just across the twenty yard line in Wisconsin territory.

Yard punt, little more than a minute and a half
gone by no score is the Badgers go on offense
for the first time tonight.

Kind of an interesting formation there, you know with punt
now you have three guys kind of personal protectors. The
long snapper is by himself. There was nobody off to
the left. And what ended up happening is Wisconsin didn't shift.
They kept all their guys and brought a lot of
heat punt block opportunity. That punt just barely got off
and you forced him into a maybe not being able

as comfortable as he normally would.

Hunter Simmons ready to make his second start as a
Badger he's in the shotgun. Dylan Jones to his right
out of the shotgun to snap the Simmons time to
throw looking sets fires to the left and it is
caught by kick a hunah, oh or no, they'll say
no catch. He juggled it and then went out of bounds. Oh,

Simmons threading the defense to get that ball to Tretch,
who could not gather it. It'll be a second out
and ten here four Wisconsin.

Speaker 8 (13:18):
Well, Trench thinks he caught it, but every wide receiver
always thinks they catch everything. But I wouldn't be surprised
if they take a look at it looked like he fell.
I don't see that ball jostling. Like the rough said,
it looks like his butt hit.

It started to move a little bit, but we're gonna

Well that's a heck of an effort.

Well, first off, I love the play call.

You get protection you're throwing on first down, and Matt
you said it that was a really good zone. He
threaded it in there perfectly to Tretch, and you know
the ref came up quickly say any jostled it. Let's
take a look, good hand fighting moved a little bit
at the bottom of it.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
Yeah, the question, it was moving, But they'll have to
determine whether Kekahuna was still in control of the football
throughout the process of the catch, and so yeah, I'm
not Yeah, this one might, this one might be upheld here.

It's what an effort though.

He fought through to Iowa defended that well and I
think the ball as he landed it jostled around and
that's why old boy and r F was coming up
doing the old six seven jostle.

Mark Johnson is using that with his women's hockey team,
and so Vimj's where I mean, come.

when you just take it over and then they lose
the coolness factor dropped significantly.

That pass went between the corner to Sean Lee and
the safety Cohen enteringer Wentter Simmons, making his second star
as a Badger. He started three games at Southern Illinois
last year. I asked Hunter earlier in the week, what
was the biggest crowd you played in front of at SIU,
and he said about eleven thousand ten x last week. Yeah,

from eleven thousand to one hundred eleven thousand. That was
what he walked into at the Big House.

Ye have to love that last week.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
I thought Hunter, you when you factor all of that in,
really composed and did it. I thought he did a
really nice job managing things. And you know, as the
broadcast was going last week, the blitz and the way
the running backs, there was a lot of good things
to build off of.

Speaker 12 (15:37):
And this is a good strolling on the field is upheld,
the pass is incomplete.

Speaker 5 (15:41):
Second that, as we thought talas you just it moved
just a little too much there, but a terrific effort
nonetheless from tretch Ka Kahuna. But after all of that,
it's second and ten for the Badgers at their twenty
one yard line. Yeah.

I think if they had kept that one angle away
from us, it would have probably been all right.

Speaker 11 (16:01):
But yeah, there was too much Jocelyn on contact with
the ground.

Kahuna slot left in the Anthony wide to the left,
Chris Brooks out to the right, you know, Kakahuna in
motion and they'll try to get around with tretch gets
a block across the twenty twenty five yard line. And
he gets drilled. Ball pops out. Iowa looks like it
has recovered, and it has, and Trench really got labeled.
He is slow to get up, and in fact he

isn't getting up. It'll be Iowa football Zach Lutmer coming
out of there with it for the Hawkeys. So an
early turnover here for Wisconsin. Xavier Wampa was getting in there.
The question is was he down first?

Yeah, the hit, it was a big hit on the
right on it, but I think he led his arm.
There's you know, potentially for a little head, you know,
head content. But I do think his took us hit
the ground before that ball fell out. So hopefully Tretch
is all right. That was a hillacious hit that he
just took.

He is being escorted to the sideline, right, I mean
he's walking but there he definitely has a two person escort. Yes,
he was just real So Tretch had a nearly terrific
catch that he was out of bounds and then on
an end around he gets belted.

Nice job blocking, Really good job by our tight end,
you know, getting out there and picking up. Dylan Jones
did a really good job of picking his guy up.
And what I love there trench was running physical. Now
got to protect yourself. Hopefully he had possession of that
football as his butt hit. I think that's what they're
gonna rule.

Yeah, they're gonna check the scene, make sure that the
ball wasn't starting to move before you went down. But
one of the angles I saw it, it looked like
he was down first.

All right. So the play gets the Badgers to their

Inside of two minutes into the game, we've had two reviews.
Trips to the left pistol formation, Jones behind the quarterback
Hunter Simmons snapped the Simmons hands off, Dylan Jones room
up the middle. He'll hit it up across a thirty

yard line, moving the pile, and Dylan Jones with a
grown man run across the thirty five to the thirty
six yard line. First down Wisconsin and the penalty marker
is down.

What I so off from Emerson Mandel just continuing to push.
Hopefully it's not a flag at the end of it.
He finished llewell and down almost to the ground, and

If you call it on Renfro, you can push a runner,
you can't pull a runner. And that's apparently what Jake

You can tell Wisconsin is bringing the physicality so far are.

Lance Mason to the lipt snapped the Simmons, He's gonna
pull it down and Ronnie, you'll get the first down
up near the thirty four yard line. And to the
best of my viewpoints there were no flags and we
might have consecutive plays without a flag or a review.

That was just really good protection and Hunter Simmons knew
exactly what he needed to do.

Speaker 11 (20:16):
The coverage was good, only needed three or four yards.

Speaker 8 (20:20):
Kind of made a very quick decision to go put
his head down and pick up a pick.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
First down, three minutes in, no score, First and ten
for the Badgers at their own thirty four yard line.
Jackson Acre in the backfield, darry On or make that
Dylan Jones lines up behind the quarterback. Simmons reads, keep,
shuffles left, throws it in the dirt in the vicinity
of Jackson Acre. Jackson Rexwroth linebacker out there in coverage.

That was just a trying to move the pocket a
little bit again.

First down, you're trying to get some positive yard. It's
trying to kind of establish a rhythm. I have a
play that really well, not only you know, with their
linebacker coming off the edge, but also in coverage on
that little out route, everything covered.

Hunter Simmons smartly just dumped the ball, moved along.

Speaker 5 (21:09):
Double wide to the left. Simmons under center, straight I
formation acre the full back, now Dylan Jones the tailback
to the Wisconsin thirty four yard line. Here's the handoff,
Dylan Jones a straight ahead across the thirty five up
to the thirty six yard line. Jayden Montgomery in there,
the son of Jerry Montgomery, probably with the Packers.

Now the line coach with the Bengals.

Not shocking, seeing a lot of similarities what Michigan did.
Iowa has decided they're gonna shoot their linebackers. Whether it's
cross dogging, which means they cross up over the center.
They are forcing Wisconsin's offensive line to man on man block.

Speaker 11 (21:49):
They think they can handle it. We'll see who winds
up winning that battle.

Speaker 5 (21:52):
They're down at eight for the Badgers at their own
thirty six yard line. Simmons back into the shotgun, two
receivers to the left snap. The Simmons look to throw
fires to the left and it is caught by Chris
Brooks close to the first down, goes out of bounds.
They'll mark at the forty three of Wisconsin. They need
the forty four. So let's see how Luke Fickle plays

this in the early minutes. He's gonna go ahead and
punts in it in a game that figures to be
so much about field position. The crowd doesn't like it,
but I'm not sure I would disagree with this decision.
I wouldn't have mind it going for it, but this
is gonna be that old school field position kind of night.

Speaker 8 (22:35):
That's the plan, and I think you always have different
tricks up your sleeve, but good protection. I think Chris
Brooks would like to have that back. I think awareness
over on the sideline. He ended up a yard short.

Speaker 6 (22:46):
Snap to Atticus Bertrams and the kick is away.

Speaker 5 (22:49):
Cayden Rwegian, the dangerous return man, will make the catch,
makes a man miss running left across the fifteen yard line.
Now reversing Field, weaves his way up across the tent
and his shoved back. Why normally you take the fair
catch there. He had a guy nearly in his face,
but weegan played it and he got about four yards
on the return.

Wisconsin has three guys are playing just as kind of
a simple zone in the middle, and you have to
you have to squeeze that a little bit when you
get down into this red area. You have have to
squeeze it, especially down at the five yard line on
a third down. Too much space there. They end up
with three guys rallying to the football, but not before
Iowa could pick up that.

but those turnovers are just being a killer here for Wisconsin.

The short fields and the points. And now what I
like here is you're down twenty nothing. And again, I
think coaches always go into these games and they have
ideas on how things are gonna play out, and you
kind of plan accordingly. And I think that's probably why
Luke punted the first time around on that fourth and one.
You're thinking one way, and obviously when you turn the

with young quarterbacks. You try and confuse and make them

Well, you're right about with Hunter Simmons. Now he's a
grad student, but he's inexperienced as a quarterback. So you
say a young quarterback, he played in eleven games at SIU.
Last year played in five, started three and that was
his season he got hurt. So you know somebody who's
been around the block a lot at the college level
but hasn't played a lot, and certainly at this level.

And I would say this, the crowd has turned out here.

I don't know what the final turnstile is going to be,
but it really looks as though it has filled in nicely.
So these are two games for Hunter Simmons where he
is playing in front of thousands more fans than he
ever played in at Southern Illinois and against the defense

growing process.

of the next four plays the Badger's four offensive plays,

later Wisconsin had another turnover in their following possession. So
a span of a nine total Wisconsin offensive plays led

that they were able to score seventeen points. It's twenty
three to nothing at the break. You cannot win football
games when you lose turnover battles. You cannot win football

they circled this one, and the circle is turned into

of the day, and that's the most frustrating part. Where
you gave yourself every opportunity to stay in the football
game a week ago, you've done the exact opposite through

to fight in between the whistle, and that's gonna be
one that you know. I don't know exactly what Luke

be able to do something positive on the scoreboard, that
kind of fight and that kind of attitude needs to
come in between the whistle and and I fully assume

can't be doing that if you're gonna already put yourself
behind the eight ball in number of different ways.
