Welcome to the Badger Basketball Postgame Show.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Which that's all for three right sidebook.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Yet presented by JAMK Security Solutions for home theaters to
smart lighting to a universal home control go online to
jksecurity dot com for three and the tide background No good.
Now here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick Bruce Awentz.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Welcome into the Jay and K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper, joined by Nick Bruswitz. We
are back again for another season for the Badgers fall
in this exhibition matchup to the Oklahoma Sooners eighty four
eighty three. We invite you to join the conversation with
us on the hotline six eight three two one thirteen
(00:46):
ten and get your reaction to this game and thoughts
on this Badger's team heading into the regular season. Because
that game certainly didn't feel like an exhibition.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
It came down to the wire.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
We had late game, dramatic last second three, but the
Badgers came up just a bit short after an incredibly
hot shooting performance from the Sooners. Beyond the arc, Nick,
they made their first five threes and finished eleven of twenty.
The good news in all of this is that this
game does not count against the Badgers record, but this
(01:19):
was a fantastic learning experience for a close game late
against a quality opponent.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah, absolutely, Dave.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
You look at this team and you think that this
is a high caliber team, one that is going to
be competing in a very talented SEC, one that made
the national tournament last year. And why not if you're
gonna have a close scrimmage against a lower caliber team,
why not have an open exhibition against a better team
to truly see how your squad stacks up. And Greg
(01:49):
Guard spoke to it with Butchy after the game. We'll
hear that again later in the program. But the reality is,
we as consumers, we as fans, had a lot of
getting to know you with half more than half of
this roster tonight. I mean, we understood what John Blackwell
and Nolan Winter would be, but the rest of the
(02:10):
new lineup are new faces. Whether it's Nick Boyd, a
six year senior coming over from San Diego State, four
seasons with Florida Atlantic and then one with San Diego State,
our guy, my guy, at least at this point.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Austin Rapp, someone I met.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Over the offseason at a golf event his one year
at Portland. He comes over now the aussy big man
knocking down threes in this game. And Andrew Roady, a
Brookfield Central kid, a Wisconsin kid who's coming off of
two seasons at Virginia after beginning his career at Saint Thomas.
It's about seeing how you stack up with high caliber competition,
(02:45):
and you're damn right. Oklahoma came out shooting and they
were making them.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Yeah they were. It was just an incredible per performance
that they were on. But this is a way for
Greg Guard to kind of see how this group meshes together.
Because when you have so many transfers, new guys coming in.
You got five transfers coming in to this team. You
lost a lot of your minutes from last year, a
lot of seniors graduated, a lot of guys moved on,
(03:13):
so a whole bunch of turnover on this roster. But
Blackwell and Winter are the big ones returning. But we
did get to see a lot of Nick Boyd and
Austin Rapp. It was really just a fantastic game from
both of them, and they're gonna be big pieces for
this team going forward all season. We'd like to get
your thoughts on this team, what you saw from this game,
(03:35):
the players that stood out to you that you're most
excited for on the hot line six eight, three, two, one,
thirteen ten, Because I mean, this group we're going to
see mixing and matching. This is why it's so great
that the NCAA opened up exhibitions a little bit more
because previously all we've really been able to see for
exhibitions is against you know, some of the other D
(03:58):
three University of Wisconsin school which are great. It's great
to have those schools come in and play against the
Badgers at the Cole Center. Great experience for those players,
and it's a nice little experience for the Badgers. But
this is one against an SEC school. This is a
power for quality opponent. Oklahoma did receive one vote in
the preseason top twenty five, they weren't on the pole.
(04:20):
Wisconsin came in at twenty four. So I mean, this
is a great opportunity for the Badgers and to find
a way to get these guys to Mesh because Nick,
as you mentioned, we saw a lot of players in here.
You know, a couple of the freshmen, will Garla, Cayden Jones.
We got to see some of them bilioscis as well,
(04:41):
But it wasn't quite an everybody situation as we've seen
with some of the previous exhibitions, where it's you know,
Isaac Gard and Riccardo Grepia and all the guys kind
of further down on the bench.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Greg Guard kind.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Of tightened it up a little bit because this game
was tight and he wanted to have his best players
out there for these pivotal moments to help them learn
because typically late in game for an exhibition, you'd be
seeing all the bottom of the bench guys out there.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
I think both sides played ten total players.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
They played this like it was a legitimate regular season game,
and I think that's very impactful. As much as we've
highlighted what Wisconsin's roster has done, a ton of difference
makers on the other side who have transferred in from
across the country. This is the modern college basketball. You're retooling,
you're resetting, you're building around hopefully a handful of guys,
(05:32):
but outside of John Blackwell, Nolan Winter, and Jack Janicki,
everyone was on the court for an organized basketball game
for the first time as a Wisconsin Badger.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
That is remarkable.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
I mean we spoke to the experience of the roster
last year. I believe it was six different players that
were honored on Senior Day. You got to replace those
guys one way or another. Daniel freetag leaves, I mean,
you see players from the roster head elsewhere, and Amos
did as well. Xavier Amos excused me Adrians, ANFL player. Yeah,
(06:05):
Exavier Amos leaves also, So you had to reset your roster.
And I was just super impressed by some of those. Obviously,
Nick Boyd and Austin Rapp are going to steal the
headlines their transfers.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
They come in. Boyd set the energy all night long.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
He didn't have a great shooting performance six of seventeen,
but he is a true point guard.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Which I don't think they had last year.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
As good as they were, it didn't feel like they had,
at least in their starting lineup that true point guard.
They had John Blackwell, they had John Toanjay, they had
a system that worked, but the reality is they didn't
have a guy like Nick Boyd.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
So I'm really fired up about him and Austin Rapp.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Holy cow, I mean, if you're gonna be six ten
knocking down threes like that and also building out rebounds.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
I was quite the debut. I know it doesn't count
in the stat book, but I love what I saw
from him.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Yeah, Austin rapped seventeen points, Nick Boyd nineteen points, all
behind John Blackwell leading the way with twenty points. As
we're accustomed to seeing John Blackwell leading the way in scoring. Yeah,
Austin Rapp being able to provide that kind of three
point shooting with his height, the rebounding ability. Six rebounds
for Rap as well, six rebounds for Nick Boyd also
(07:14):
in there. But that kind of helps replace the loss
of Stephen Krow who graduated.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
You know, he's he's.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Moved on, so now you need to replace the big
man inside. Austin Rapp comes in and he's done a
fantastic job here today to provide that kind of scoring output,
to provide the rebounding, provide the defense down there. So
that's absolutely fantastic to see. Because boy Boyd and Rap,
I'm they're really coming in as the big time transfers
here and Wisconsin I think is going to be relying
(07:43):
a lot on these guys. I think Badgers fans, the
ones that maybe don't pay as much retent attention to
the offseason with the recruiting and the transfer portal. These
are going to be the two guys. These are going
to be the two big names on this season's roster
that are going to be getting big time minutes, that
are going to be making big time plays and really
(08:04):
helping Wisconsin get there. I mean Boyd and Rap this
is this is gonna be a one to two punch
perhaps in terms of the transfer portal that I think
maybe could rival what John Tanjay provided in the transfer
portal last year.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Yeah, I would look at what they've done over the
last two years in the portal and say it's nothing
short of excellence, but it's been more focused in on
one individual each year. Right aj Store two years ago
and then last year, John Tonjay is maybe the greatest
transfer edition so far in the NIL era for a
Badger program. I mean he was elite from the moment
(08:39):
he got here. He put up forty early in the
season against Arizona last year, and he was nothing short
a special. I think Andrew Roady is also going to
be in that group, But so far, what we've seen
tonight is the first example. Nick Boyd and Austin Rapp
have shown to be difference makers for this program. And
I thought, and I tweeted this out at halftime in
(08:59):
the mess continues through the whole game is as we
look back. I mean, Wisconsin didn't get much out of
Nolan Winter tonight, and they were competitive, they had every
chance to win it. I think that last year they
were competing for the best season ever from a free
throw shooting perspective, tonight they missed five. They shoot seventy
two percent, Like they're small tweaks, and the Badgers win
(09:20):
this game as much as Oklahoma was better from three,
shooting fifty five percent from deep versus Wisconsin's thirty two.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
The Badgers of every cracket.
Speaker 5 (09:29):
Winning this thing if they just make their free throws,
one less turnover, one more bucket from Nolan Winter. I
think he got blocked four times on one possession at
one point. Like there's just small tweaks and adjustments to
be made. This is your first time playing a legitimate
basketball game in a very long time, So I'm fired up.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
I'm super excited for this team.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
Had they won by twenty, had they lost by fifteen,
I think my excitement would have been still the same tonight. Obviously,
I'm satisfied to see that it was just a one
point loss. If it had to pick a loss, this
is the best way to lose by one. But this
is just I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Man.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
This gonna be a good year.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Yeah, it absolutely is.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
And to have those late game situations, close game situations,
I think that's just such a great learning experience. And
the Badgers are gonna go to the tape and they're
gonna be able to teach quite a bit from this.
But you mentioned the blocks there by Oklahoma eight blocks
in this game. That played a big factor, as well
as did the three point shooting from Oklahoma fifty five percent.
(10:27):
As you mentioned, we'll have a fun fact about that
on the other side, as Yes, they are back and
they are more fun than ever. Fun facts with Dave.
That's gonna be coming up next. On the other side,
Wisconsin falls to Oklahoma eighty four eighty three in a
preseason exhibition game. You're listening to the j K Security
Solutions basketball postgame show.
Speaker 6 (10:56):
What a pass in sideed Nolan Wins on the bounce
feed boyd slam Tunk had a foul Nolan Winter with
a chance at a three point play.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Welcome back to the J and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame show. Jay and K Security Solutions from home theaters
to smart lighting to a universal home control go online
to jksecurity dot com. Dave Gasper here alongside Nick Brucewitz
after this Badger's exhibition loss to Oklahoma eighty four eighty three.
If you'd like to weigh in, you can call us
(11:27):
on the hotline six oh eight three two one thirteen ten.
Leading scorer for the Badgers tonight is John Blackwell with
twenty points on seven to fourteen shooting. Nick Boyd right
behind him with nineteen points. Austin Rapp was seventeen, Nolan
Winter added ten, Andrew Roady with five, and then we
got the uh freshman from Lithuania, Alexis Biliaskis with six
(11:51):
points as well, then Braden Carrington with three and Jack
Janicki with three points to round out the scoring for
the Badgers and Nick. There's a lot of new players,
new faces in here, a lot of transfers, a lot
of freshmen getting the opportunities, and Billy Askas kind of
one of the more intriguing ones as well, the forward
(12:14):
from Lithuania six points both on three pointers.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Yeah, no, I love it.
Speaker 5 (12:20):
I love to see it because part of what we
saw last year from Stephen Krawell was the lack of
progression from deep We felt maybe he would take another
step up what we had seen him do against Bradley
previously in the NIT and not necessarily taking those steps thereafter.
I felt like we could use more deep threes from
(12:41):
big men, not necessarily deep threes, but threes from the bigs,
and Bulawskis was able to do it tonight. Obviously Rapp
was able to do it tonight. Nolan Winter took two threes,
didn't make them, and Biloskis, I think it's one of
those dudes that we just don't know because we didn't
watch him. He's out a high school kid, He's certainly
not from the state. He's from overseas. And there are
(13:02):
a lot of guys, a lot of international flavor on
this roster, Austin rap Bielawskis, of course, Hayden Jones. I
think that you're going to see more and more of
that moving forward. Hopefully, although he's no longer on the
coaching staff, kirk Penny will maintain some of those relationships
and still help out the Badgers, and I think you
will in any way possible.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Absolutely, he goes back home to New Zealand. So kirk
Penny leaves the coaching staff this offseason, and joining the
coaching staff is none other than Brad Davison, who has
been on campus for a decade already and now comes
back again for some more because let's face that the
man can help but be in Madison, Wisconsin. I mean,
(13:41):
getting Brad Davison back, I think that's such a good
guy to have in this group. If you're going to
lose kirk Penny, which is certainly a tough loss to
the coaching staff, which with what he's been able to
bring offensively recruiting wise, it's a tough one to with stand.
But if you're able to add Brad Davison in his place,
(14:02):
I think Greg Guard's going to be feeling pretty good
about that addition.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah. I just think that he's a different coach.
Speaker 5 (14:07):
I think that they each have different strengths, and kirk
Penny is kind of the guy that put together this
new offensive identity for the Badgers. It's all about maintaining
it now, and I've no shortness of belief in Greg
guard in their current staff to maintain what they've got.
But Brad's a guy that can practice with these dudes,
and he's a professional player still overseas like this is
(14:27):
a different level of ability from a coach. Not only
can he give him the x's and o's, but he
can be out there on the court challenging them kind
of one for one. It's not like he's at any
sort of disadvantage. He might even be better than half
these guys. So I like it. I love the idea
of a Wisconsin guy being able to come back, and
it seemed like this was always kind of part of
his plan, his dream. So to see him back here
(14:50):
in Wisconsin's a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
And you just know Davison is going to be taking
charges in practice.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Now.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
I know the rule changes I've made it a little
bit more difficult to actually get charges called. But you know,
if he's playing some one on one defense on these
guys in practice, he's gonna be trying to take a charge,
he's gonna be trying to get it called. So I'm
excited to see what he's gonna be able to bring in,
how this Badgres team maybe takes on a little bit
of that identity that Davison had as a player, because
(15:18):
he was certainly a fun player to have, and you're
and you always love having fun players, and fun players
lead to fun facts. And you know what that means, Nick,
It means it is time once again to bring back
the award winning or should be award winning fun facts
with Dave.
Speaker 7 (15:35):
Hey, have you ever heard me?
Speaker 4 (15:36):
Here's the term fun fact.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fight.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
You're a fun fact.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
I do first time in history this has happened in
eight games, five.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Spent a long time since we've seen a game like this.
Speaker 8 (15:55):
Fun out here?
Speaker 4 (15:55):
This game's fun.
Speaker 7 (15:56):
Okay, I don't know if that fact is fun?
Speaker 9 (15:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Are you fired up for fun facts with Day?
Speaker 4 (16:04):
All Right?
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Fun facts make their triumphant return for the twenty twenty
five twenty six season, and in this one, now we
tease it a little bit in the first segment, but
Oklahoma shooting fifty five percent in this game, they had
a phenomenal performance, eleven of twenty from three.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
They made their first five in a row.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
But this was really an incredible performance for Oklahoma last
season against the Badgers, an opponent shot fifty five percent
from three just once all season. Maryland shot eleven of
nineteen from three back in January January twenty ninth of
(16:48):
this past season. So I mean, for Wisconsin losing this
game by one, it took basically one of the best
shooting forms as the Badgers probably will see all year
from three.
Speaker 5 (17:01):
Yeah, let's hope that it's not because of the Badger's
defensive effort but solely because.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Of the hot hands on the Oklahoma side.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
So let's try and nip this one in the bud
and not allow for this to happen again defensively. But yeah,
it's an anomaly in credit where credits do the Sooner
has knocked him down from deep.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Yeah, and luckily this does not count on the record
because this was just an exhibition. But the Badgers now
fall to sixty two and five all time in exhibition contests.
This snapped a streak of fifty two straight wins and
exhibitions dating back to nineteen ninety two, before either you
(17:40):
or I were born. Nick second ever exhibition game for
the Badgers against a D one opponent they had won
against Northern Iowa in twenty seventeen, which was a blowout win,
by the way, So now one and one in exhibition
games against D one opponents.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
But yeah, that's streak. Gonna have to start over with
a new one.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
That's all right. Streaks are meant to be ended and restarted.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
I think we saw that with Penn State in Wisconsin
last year. Yeah, you got to win the games that
you can, and these are games that don't necessarily matter,
so we if this means one last loss during the
regular season, I'll go for it.
Speaker 4 (18:20):
Yeah, I am all for that as well.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
And Badgers will just have to deal with having a
record of fifty seven games over five hundred in exhibition contests.
And just more fun facts as the seasons getting started here,
the Badgers are ranked twenty fourth in the preseason AP Poll.
It's the first time for the Badgers to be ranked
preseason in five years. Last time it happened was in
the twenty twenty twenty one season, So great for Wisconsin
(18:48):
to get that recognition to start the year. And also,
John Blackwell has been named to the preseason All Big
Ten Team, becoming the first Badger to be named to
that team in the last three years. So congratulations to
John Blackwell as the Associated Press is expecting a big
time season's John Blackwell.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Yeah, and if the season looks like it did tonight,
I'm all for it. And a couple of moments where
this game would have been a lot different in the
scoreboard had he not gotten a second chance opportunity for Wisconsin.
His rebounding ability as a guard is forever going to
be underrated, and his twenty points.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
Led the game.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
So yeah, John Blackwell looking the part so far?
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Yeah, he certainly is.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
But the Badgers came up just short eighty four eighty
three in this one. You know who's always looking the
part is Nick Osen, our guy who is covering this
team inside and out. He is going to be joining
us on the other side of this break, and we're
gonna get his insights, his thoughts on this game that's
coming up. You're not going to want.
Speaker 4 (19:54):
To miss it.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
Badger's fall eighty four eighty three in an exhibition to Oklahoma.
You're listening to the jank Casecurity Solutions basketball postgame show.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
To right of the circle, fakes a pass, let's a
cry against.
Speaker 6 (20:16):
The three Boston raft with fourteen's.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
First bucket of the second half time I speed five
serf for him.
Speaker 6 (20:27):
The lead cut to two for Oklahoma sixty six sixty four.
Speaker 3 (20:32):

Dave Gasper here alongside Nick Brucewitz after this Badger's exhibition
lost to the Oklahoma Sooners eighty four eighty three. And
now we welcome in the man who covers this team
(20:53):
inside and out, Nick Osen from Badger two four seven
and U Nick. As we heard there in the I
like coming back. Austin rap He had himself a big game,
seventeen points, six of eleven from the field, six rebounds.
What did you make of Austin raps first first go
around as a Wisconsin Badger.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
Yeah, guys, it feels like just this morning we were
catching up. Great to be back on this. So Austin Ratman,
he was one of the players. You know, we've talked
about a lot throughout the week leading in and I thought, frankly,
he was really good. You know, we spoke with coach
Guard a little bit ago. I actually asked about Rapp
and he said that he needs to grow Defensively, I
(21:36):
think he came around a little bit late in this one,
but offensively and the way he can obviously shoot the three.
But I think he was working really well as like
a cutter and a roller a little bit. I think
he's maybe stronger and kind of ready for this level,
a little bit quicker than I expected in terms of
some of the post play. Frankly, I think he could
end up being a huge addition for this group. I'm
(21:56):
looking at the stats a little bit thirty three minutes,
so obviously a lot of it's in the game that
you know technically doesn't count. It's not going to go
in the standings. But I just love what I heard
from rap from JB and Coach Guard post game. Basically
just taking this as you know, there were some good things,
but obviously a learning experience with a lot of the
intricacies of the game as well.
Speaker 5 (22:16):
Nick, I see this game and they put up eighty
three and it didn't feel like either Rody or Winter
really found any sort of groove. And that gives me
a lot of confidence in the depth of this team
that even when two of what I would consider their
four most prominent offensive weapons, they just didn't really deliver.
Speaker 8 (22:37):
Yeah, Bruce, I think that's really, you know, a fair
way to think of it. I was actually looking a
little bit as well, and offensively, I don't think I
have many, if any worries.
Speaker 4 (22:46):
Really.
Speaker 8 (22:46):
I think that Rody, you know, he could have shot
a little bit more. He didn't get a ton of looks,
but I like what I saw from him, especially as
a passer. I think winter Man had a lot of
good looks, and you could tell he was a little
bit frustrated after a couple that. I think he had
some that he expected to finish. I think that obviously
Guard and the team expect him to finish some of those.
But you're exactly right. I mean, it's an exhibition. I
(23:09):
think some guys played about what you expect. Maybe some
a couple a little bit better per se, but overall,
offense is not going to be an issue. I don't think,
unless maybe you run into some foul trouble and you
need to rely on a lot of that youth. But otherwise,
I feel like defensively, those are kind of the areas
that you're going to need to grow from. You look
for Winter to be a little bit more aggressive physically
(23:31):
down low. Obviously you got that and one dunk in
the second half, which was important and good to see
from him. But otherwise I like a lot of what
I saw, even shot selection wise, Scuberws.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
I have to imagine getting hitting the Schnas there in
the first couple of minutes didn't help Nolan Winter's offensive
cause in this one, dealing with the bloody Nells. But yeah,
coming back and playing twenty six minutes in this one,
and Nick, I mean this is an exhibition, it doesn't count,
But I mean games like this are important for helping
(24:02):
these guys gel together, helping them learn, and this being
a close game late where you have to foul, you
have to use a whole bunch of strategy. You gotta
make quick shouts, quick plays. How important do you think
this will be and how effective do you think the
teach tape will be from this game for these guys
to take away?
Speaker 8 (24:22):
Yeah, Dave, you know, I'm thinking if I were in
the shoes of Greg Gard or one of these really
good coaches that we saw tonight, this was almost a
dream right because it showed Okay, both teams played well
enough essentially to win. Badger showed fight obviously able to
take a lead, but there's enough for these competitors. They're
not okay with the loss. So it's just kind of
an extra tune up to really key in on some
(24:44):
of those details that you look for. I know I've
mentioned it a couple times already in the segment, but
just defense, defense, defense. I mean I would sit in
there next to a couple friends in the media section,
and you don't expect for it to be perfect, especially
against a I would say loaded, Sooner's team be a
little bit underrated right now, but some of those drives
to the hoop or even a couple of the stepback jumpers,
(25:05):
like there wasn't even a defender close. So I say
all that to say, add that in with the experience,
the chemistry, and just some of those opportunities day that
we saw tonight, I would think it's gonna be a blast,
quite honestly in the film room tomorrow or Sunday, because
there are positive but enough quote unquote negatives growing pains
to really hone in on a going forward this next
(25:27):
week and a half.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
Nickoson Badger two four seven joining us here on the
J and K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show, Nick, I
felt like last season the Badgers may do with and worse,
honestly exemplary without a true point guard, and Nick Boyd
has now filled that role, but off the bench, Kamari
McGee was that guy, and this year maybe they don't
(25:49):
have that guy. So what did you make of their rotation,
particularly with the guards coming off the bench, and how
it may look this season And this very well could
be nothing like what the regular season it looks like,
but to me, it felt like this was as close
as you were going to get in an exhibition matchup.
Speaker 8 (26:06):
Yeah, Nick, you know, I thought that coach Guard and
honestly both staffs did treat their lineups a little bit
like a regular season game. I think even coach Guard
said in the post game he wanted to play Hayden
Jones more so. I don't know if he was just,
you know, obviously caught up in the competition or he
liked seeing what the starters were doing. But I think
that guard spot is going to be really interesting, right
(26:26):
because I thought zak Kinzinger had a really good chance
to get a few minutes tonight. You know, he didn't
get in. Jones just played three minutes. I don't think
you're going to have a player that does exactly what
like Kamari or Carter Gilmour did, But I do think
that there's a lot of talent coming off of that bench,
like Alexis Bieluskas, who I know I told you guys
about weeks ago, stepped in right away can to three.
(26:50):
I thought that every attempt looked good. I think he
looked comfortable. Offensively, Jack JANICKI very solid. We know what
he can do. So it's going to be a different group.
I think that maybe offensively your top sick there's a
little bit more varying talent compared to last year. But
you might not have like a Camagee off the bench,
and you're probably not gonna have like a first team
All American like Tanjay. But I just think that all
(27:13):
those top five or six guys can be threats throughout
the floor.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Bruce nick osin Badger two, four to seven. You can
follow him on the Twitter or x if you like
to call it that instead at the real Nick Osen.

that as well. Badgers fall eighty four eighty three to

fall eighty four eighty three to Oklahoma in this exhibition
matchup at five Serve Forum. Great late game opportunities for
(28:56):
the Badgers, Lots of opportunities to teach the team, Lots
of teach tape chances for Greg Gard and this coaching staff.
As we just talked with Nick Osin from Badger two
four seven, as he pointed out the film room, they're
going to have a great time with that coming up
either tomorrow or on Sunday as Badgers get themselves ready
(29:18):
for the season. But Greg Guard, he caught up with
our Brian Butch after the game.
Speaker 10 (29:26):
Coaching eighty four eighty three lost to Oklahoma.
Speaker 7 (29:30):
Well, what are your takeaways?
Speaker 10 (29:31):
Just as you know, the first exhibition game, first time
you got to see your guys, you know, against somebody else.
Speaker 9 (29:36):
I think this was really good for us. I mean
this other than you know, your final score. We saw
a lot, got a lot, exposed, a lot of things
that we aren't good enough at. I think the newness
of guys, not necessarily you know in a Wisconsin Jersey,
but the connections we didn't have defensive but we had
a lot of mistakes, a lot of.
Speaker 7 (29:58):
Switches that didn't get covered.
Speaker 9 (29:59):
The a lot of things we can learn from and
that's exactly what we needed to have for tonight. And
that's what I wanted to show some things and show
where we have to get better. That's the exciting part.
It's not about where we are what we it's where
this group isn't right now that has me the most
excited and specific on the defensive end. It's something we've
talked about from day one, is a defensive identity, and we.
Speaker 7 (30:20):
Got it late. But we got it too late.
Speaker 9 (30:22):
So it's a great learning experience for us. It you know,
quite frankly, couldn't have turned out almost any better in
terms of how we can use this to really grow
well and.
Speaker 10 (30:31):
You guys are talking, you talked about that and you're
down six. You get three straight turnovers, like just having
to have the answer, being able to play together, find
ways to you know, find that connectivity to make the
right play. A lot of that just you know, watching it,
having it play out kind of you know John Blackwell,
you know, finding a way to bring guys along. How
nice is it to have him know what the standard
(30:53):
is and be able to be vocal about that.
Speaker 7 (30:55):
Yeah, I mean he's organizing guys in the huddle.
Speaker 9 (30:57):
You know, it's the first time we've sat down on
chairs like that and not not in a practice setting.
Speaker 7 (31:02):
So there's you know, so many things that were first
for even.
Speaker 10 (31:05):
Going to make sure we get the towel exchange, right
though we had we had a turnover on the towel.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
Exchange during the exhibition game. But I was, I was
going crazy.
Speaker 9 (31:12):
They they're so excited to go in, they forget the towel.
A lot of nerves, But no, I think, like I said,
it's exactly what you want out of it. You want
to see uh areas that you have to get better at.
It's so much better than playing a team where you
just roll, you know, roll them, or you have even
even the close scrimmages are nice, but it's you don't
have the game pressure, maybe with a crowd and those
(31:34):
type of things. And obviously in this type of an
arena and you know, you get a you get a
high major opponent that you know, I think we'll have
a good year, and you know when we have to
adjust when guys bang a couple of threes that maybe
hadn't made a three in their career.
Speaker 7 (31:49):
Now we have to adjust.
Speaker 9 (31:50):
So it's those things that you only get better by
going through it. And you know we'll learn from this
and break the tape down. And they're they're excited about
what we can be because we're nowhere near nor should
we be I would, I would really be nervous if
we were at where we could be and had to
hit our potential. We're a long long ways, but it's
(32:12):
October and that's that's we're in a good place.
Speaker 10 (32:15):
Hey, you look at this and last one I've got
for you here, coach. But you see a lot of things.
Correct that. That's the first thing as a coach normally that's.
Speaker 4 (32:22):
What you say.
Speaker 7 (32:23):
But what did you like as far as what you
saw too?
Speaker 8 (32:26):
Well?
Speaker 9 (32:26):
We took I thought for the most part we had
a couple key turnovers. But for the most part, for
a game this early, a lot of times over can
get sloppy and we have a lot of you know,
have turnovers and seven which I thought was pretty good.
You know, I thought we got better at handling the
ball screens and you got some newer guys in there.
Speaker 7 (32:44):
And when do you switch it, when do you not?
When do you hedge it? When do you not?
Speaker 9 (32:49):
In some of the exchanges where we we exchanged but
we forgot to go to the guy that we left.
So just just things like that that have to happen
through an experience like this where you you learn and
now we'll see ourselves on film tomorrow and you don't
go back to work a.
Speaker 6 (33:04):
Card our thanks to Brian Butch and of course, head
coach Greg Guard of the Wisconsin Badgers sharing his thoughts
postgame after the eighty three loss for the Badgers to
Oklahoma in exhibition play.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
All right, there was head coach Brian Butch, head coach
Greg Guard, with Brian Butch and Chris Fosters wrapping up
as well. Chris, Yeah, Chris Foster is on the play
by play tonight as Matt Lapey is out in Eugene
getting ready for the football game tomorrow on against the
Oregon Ducks. But Greg Guard seemed very excited about you know,
(33:40):
this team, and this team seemed very excited about being
able to go in look at the tape tomorrow, get
back onto the court, and get back to practice. Nick,
what were your thoughts after hearing coach Guard?
Speaker 5 (33:51):
Uh, First and foremost, I want to express my thoughts
to everyone I'm seeing on social media after this game,
not in my comments section, but in a lot of
comments sections.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
It does didn't count. This game does not count.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
Okay, it was the first time playing together as a
group in a real contest, and I'd rather them playing
this than one that they.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Didn't even have to try.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
And so everyone who thinks this guy is falling right now,
you're wrong. This is a foolish misjudgment of where we're
at in the season.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
They got another exhibition.
Speaker 5 (34:18):
Game next week, five days from now against a team
they will be UW Blattville at home, and they'll win
that game by forty.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
So let's just chill for now.
Speaker 5 (34:29):
But from a Greg Guard perspective, yeah, I think this
is a perfect world. Like he kind of explained, this
is what you want. You want to see some problems
with your team, You want to address them. You want
to be able to coach up your group and get
them ready to go for the regular season. So I
have full faith in Greg Guard, that staff and what
this team is doing because they have shown the last
handful of years that they can go from struggling to
(34:52):
coaching it up to developing an offense to being one
of the best offenses in the country.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Yeah, and that's I call your sentiments completely. I mean,
this is exhibition, this is preseason. This game does not
count against the win loss record. When the next time
you get an AP poll, this game will not be
relevant at all. It's going to be completely stricken from
the record, but for the learning opportunity, this was big
(35:19):
for Wisconsin. They'll look at the tape, they'll learn and
I thought they seemed like they gelled pretty well concerning
this is their first time on the court against an
actual opponent together with all the new transfers, all the
new freshmen that they've had. But as you mentioned, Nick,
they will have another exhibition next week coming up on Wednesday,
the twenty ninth, back at the Coal Center against UW Plattville.
(35:42):
That's the next time they will be in action. That's
the next time we will be in action, as we
will be there with you as well on this postgame show.
But the regular season gets started on Monday, November three
against Campbell and that's where that's when this season actually
gets going, that ends up starting to count. That'll do
it for us here tonight than fantastic game. We are
(36:05):
going on year number three, Nick, of you and I
doing the Jane K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show, could
not be more excited for it. Once again the day
Oklahoma eighty four Wisconsin eighty three. We will talk to
you again next Wednesday night as Badger's take on a
uw Platteville. Thank you for listening. This has band Case
Security Solutions. Basketball postgame show.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
Brown looks to inbound.
Speaker 6 (36:30):
He gets it in heads up play by Xavier Brown,
scurrying too bound before Wisconsin could settle defensively.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
He found Mohammed Waggie who just needed.
Speaker 10 (36:39):
To touch the ball and.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Times errors.
Speaker 6 (36:44):
The game is over, But how about this eighty four
eighty three Oklahoma beats Wisconsin in an exhibition nail bighter.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
That was a really entertaining game.
