Now, here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick Bruce Awaitz.
Speaker 5 (00:33):
I don't hear anything coming on the line. Welcome into
the j and K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show. I'm
your host Dave Gasper, joined by Nick Bruce Wiz. Those
Gonso Badgers win a surprisingly close exhibition over uw PLATFEL
sixty nine fifty three. We invite you to join the
(00:55):
conversation with us on the hotline six eight three two
one thirty and I want to hear from you how
much does a relatively lackluster performance tonight concern you for
the regular season. This game had a far different field
than the last exhibition against Oklahoma. Plattville was within two
(01:16):
points in the second half, then Wisconsin finally put their
foot on the gas. They went on a fourteen to
ozer run to pull away, but this was a poor
free throw shooting night. They turned the ball over fifteen times.
And let Plattville hang around nick It almost seems like
Wisconsin was sleepwalking through this exhibition.
Speaker 6 (01:34):
It felt a lot like when you look at the
first half that Platteville plunged him in the mouth early
in that Wisconsin took a long time to respond. In
credit to Jeff Guard's squad for coming in here ready
to go. We often look at this game as an
opportunity for the other team to play in the Cole Center,
to have an opportunity to play a D one program,
(01:55):
and they lived up to their opportunity tonight. I felt
like it took a long time for this Badgers group,
which is operating with just truly one returning guard and
one returning big man in John Blackwell and Nolan Winter,
and that starting lineup and then Jack j Nicky off
the bench. It's a brand new roster and it's going
(02:15):
to take time to gel. But it's real awkward to
be in a close battle with a team that you
expect to blow out. And credit to the Badgers down
the stretch for being able to turn it on and
create the separation you alluded to. But first and foremost, yeah,
I would look at this game and I think a
lot of people would agree with what you said as
a lackluster performance for Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
Yeah, the free throw shooting was just atrocious, nine of nineteen,
just forty seven percent from the line. We'll have some
more about that coming up in Fun Facts with Dave.
But yeah, as you mentioned, Nick, this is a new
team coming together, trying to trying to gel, trying to mesh.
You only have a couple of returners, and you got
a whole bunch of transfers from all over the place,
(02:57):
and you got some freshmen in there as well. But
at the same time, when they played Oklahoma, they seemed
to be gelling pretty well. They seem to be meshing
fairly well. They were in that game. It was back
and forth. They were shooting pretty well. They were playing
largely some pretty good basketball against Oklahoma. This game here
(03:19):
generally some pretty poor basketball.
Speaker 7 (03:21):
Turning the ball over.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Austin Rapp had seven turnovers in this game. That was remarkable,
but fifteen turnovers overall for the team, Rap had nearly
half of them. That's just some ugly basketball. That's not
something you see Wisconsin. Do you know whether they're gelling
or not, You know, turning the ball over is not
something Wisconsin generally does a lot of so they had
(03:44):
it working, they had it kind of jelling a little
bit against Oklahoma, but they weren't able to get it
going here against UW Platteville. And I'm not sure if
that was you know, Platteville just kind of coming out
and playing them that toughly, that great, or if.
Speaker 7 (03:58):
It's just I mean Wisconsin for those guys trying to.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
Get up for this game to play UW Platteville after
you just played Oklahoma, you got a long season coming
up ahead. I have to wonder if a bunch of
these guys looked this like, Eh, it's Platteville and we'll
kind of sleepwalk through this, not too concerned about it,
still gonna end up with a win. This game doesn't count,
and you know, Platteville, those guys are looking at this like, Hey,
(04:22):
this is my shot to play in a D one arena,
to play against a D one team. And they played,
They balled out, They played the game of their lives.
Speaker 6 (04:31):
Yeah, I just didn't feel like there was enough urgency
in the first half. I do feel like the Badgers
went into the breaking came out with a lot more urgency.
I know late in the half it was a two
point game, but it felt like if you do what
I do, David, I think you do something similar kind
of keeping track of shots going up and shots going in.
The pace was a lot faster in the second half,
and Nick Boy led that by example. I mean, he
(04:53):
was a dude that turned it on. It felt to
me Boy took three total shots in the first half,
two of which were a three. I think his greatest
ability is to attack the basket and get going in
transition quickly, and he didn't necessarily do that before the break.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
So I'll agree with you.
Speaker 6 (05:12):
You look at this game, you say thirty one points
against Platteville in the first half, only thirty eight in
the second half. You would have expected an offense that
averaged right around eighty points last year to at minimum
be close to that tonight, and they didn't come close
to it. And I just think that we have to
embrace not that this team is not going to be
able to be as good as last year's team, but
(05:34):
we do have.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
To recognize that this is going to be.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
A very different team in about how many different ways
are going to go about their business.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
I think it's a bigger team.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
I think that's pretty obvious based off of the rotations
we've seen so far this year, Rap and Winter in
the starting lineup. Last year, it felt like they had
a lack of size. More often than not, Carter Gilmour
came off the bench and played the five, and this
year it's a different group.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
And you point to free throws too.
Speaker 6 (05:59):
It wasn't just in this game was against Oklahoma as well,
where they fell short. Last year, they were borderline historically good.
This year, I just don't think they're going to challenge
that pace. It's all about making these pieces fit together
and get on the right track, and I think Greg
Guard's the right guy for that job. They won tonight.
It would have been a terrible failure had they not.
They do win by sixteen, so it's not like it
(06:21):
was particularly close on the final score, but it was
closer than I think anyone would have imagined for a
good portion.
Speaker 7 (06:28):
Yeah, it really was.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Nick Boyd, as you mentioned, eleven points on this game,
four of nine shooting he had, you know, he was
able to get a whole bunch of points there during
that fourteen to nothing run to pull away from Platteville.
Nolan Winter great double double, seventeen points, fifteen rebounds. He
was grabbing all the boards today. No one else had
more than seven for either team. So yeah, you get
(06:53):
some rebounding there. You got some size as well, So
it is going to take a little bit to come together.
But that is basically the reality here in today's college
athletics with the transfer portal, with new guys coming in,
because you just have the handful of returners as you mentioned,
Nick Blackwell, Winter, Jack Janicki, and then a couple of
guys further down on the bench, Robinson, Grepe Guard. Uh,
(07:17):
that's that's about it. From returning from last year's squad.
You got basically, you know, three fits of the starting
lineup are completely new players, and it's a ton of
change and it does take some time for these guys
to gel together. But Phil, this could be somewhat concerning.
(07:37):
So six o eight three two one thirteen ten is
the number two call in.
Speaker 7 (07:43):
Does this game?
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Does this lack luster performance a little bit concern you
at all? If it does, how much we'd love to
hear from you on the hotline. Six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. But Wisconsin does end up with
the win, sixty nine fifty three over UW plantfill in
the Ding Against Cancer game, raising money for cancer research,
(08:04):
a fantastic initiative led by Greg Garda and the university
it is. It has been great Sea Go and Nolan
Winter the leading score tonight for Wisconsin seventeen points, Austin
Rapp with fourteen, Nick Boyd with eleven. Those were the
three in double digits for the Badgers. Coming up on
the other side, we will have some fun facts with
(08:25):
Dave and those are always gonna be more fun after
a win as they are. And we're also gonna hear
from Nick Osen from Badger two four seven. He's going
to join us later on in the program as well.
Get his thoughts on this game. That's all coming up.
You're not gonna want to miss it. Stay tuned. This
is the j K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.
Speaker 8 (08:54):
And running to the rim as Blackwell catching left block
darts are back out the wrap nother three straight on
straight in back to back threes for Austin Rapid at
seven to six Plattville.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Welcome back to the JANK Security Solutions basketball postgame Show.
Jank scuredy Solutions from home theaters to smart lighting to
a universal home control go online to jksecurity dot com.
Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Brucewitz as the
Badgers win against u w Platteville sixty nine to fifty
three in this final exhibition game before the regular season.
(09:29):
This game does not count, but the next one will,
as Badgers will face off against Campbell the Fighting Camels
next week and to kickoff and start the regular season.
And Nick this game and this team is going to
rely heavily on John Blackwell going forward throughout the regular season.
(09:51):
John Blackwell took a major step forward last season and
this year he's expected to take another step forward. In
this game, just nine points, three of eleven shooting, seven
rebounds in there. But this was not John Blackwell's best
performance here tonight.
Speaker 6 (10:09):
It was not, But as you kind of read off
his stat line there, you can see how he still
impacts the game. Seven rebounds matches Austin Rapp for the
second most on the team, and as you've highlighted, Nolan
Winters fifteen leads the game. But I mean that's seven boards,
and that's finding a way to be helpful in battle
(10:29):
and show up in other ways when you can't put
the shot in and you look at four offense rebounds there,
which tied Nolan Winter for the most on the team. Like,
you gotta give credit where credits due. He didn't quit
on this game. He never shrugged, he never showed that
this game was getting too much of him. This is
gonna be an anomaly. I think in regards to his season.
(10:50):
There will be games like this. Inevitably, guys have cold
shooting nights. I just give credit where credits due. He
was out there for thirty one minutes, second most on
the team. They were plus twenty eight when he was
out there, so they're not hurting with him on the court,
even when he's not scoring.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
At the clip that they expected.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
I do think that there's gonna be a lot more
of games that are closer to nineteen points than nine
this year. So I'm looking forward to finding out how
he responds. I think Nolan Winter responded really well tonight
to a poor performance against Oklahoma.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
Yeah, I think so as well. Winter did not have
his best game there. The Badgers had to rely heavily
on other guys, namely John Blackwell, but Austin Rapp, Andrew Roady,
Nick Boyd. Those guys had bigger games against Oklahoma, but
Winter gets himself going here, maybe gets some momentum heading
into the regular season starting against Campbell next week. But
(11:43):
we also got to see a little bit more of
the bench in this game than we saw against Oklahoma. Again,
it was still late that we saw these guys get in.
It wasn't a ton of playing time that you'd necessarily
expect for them in the exhibition against uw Platteville, but
they didn't get in all against Oklahoma. That's the zach Kinsingers,
the Jack Robinsons, Isaac Gard, Ricardo Grepi, those guys. They
(12:06):
came in for a minute or so at the end,
Greg Guard finally kind of emptying that bench there, but
he had to hold off on that a little bit
because it was forty seven forty five. It was a
close game heading about halfway through this second half, so
it took him a little bit to get to get
going there. But thankfully Guard was able to empty his
(12:26):
bench and get all of his guys in there.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
Yeah, it felt like once they hit forty seven to
forty five, that was actually on an ugly set of
plays for with Scott's right, they give up the two,
then they allow the easy turnover, they fall asleep in
bounding it give up another two.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Nick Boyd then goes ahead and takes over.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
He hadn't really developed any sort of rhythm so far
in the game at that point, and then goes two
for two it's a free throw line. After drawing the foul,
adds another pair of buckets back to back later on
in the team's fourteen to zero run. He later adds
a couple more points. Nick Boyd is he huge. He's huge.
He's exactly what we wondered if they were gonna be
able to have last year, and never did. They were
(13:05):
able to not necessarily overcome, but execute what they were
looking to do without a true point guard in the
starting lineup. This guy's a true point guard. He's been
to Final Fours. He's worked on really strong programs, both
at Florida Atlantic their head coach Dusty May now with
Michigan and over at San Diego State this past season.
Nick Boyd is gonna have the ball in his hands
(13:25):
more often than not in this offense.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
And it felt to.
Speaker 6 (13:29):
Me, as I already highlighted earlier here in the program,
he didn't really put his foot on the gas early
in this game, he was the guy that was pumping
the crowd up. He did not have a strong shooting
performance against Oklahoma, but you remember you were part of that.
He was fist bumping, he was raising his arms, he
was pumping the crowd up in Fizer form. He didn't
see that here tonight. Maybe it was just a different
(13:51):
vibe here at the Cole Center. Gonna be more people
in attendancy against Campbell on Monday, but an opportunity for
Nick Boyd to kind of build off for that second
half looking forward here to Campbell, the fighting Camels as Butch,
you tried to pose the question, they will not be
coming in on a camel.
Speaker 7 (14:11):
But you're ruining the fun. Nick.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
I can't imagine there are many camel mascots or teams
that are called the Camels at the Division one level.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
It might be zero besides them. It might just be Campbell.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
Yeah, I think Campbell's the only camel's mascot in D
one sports. But I mean there are live mascots. I
mean Texas has Bevo, you know, the Longhorn. Colorado has
Ralphie the Buffalo. So there are big animal mascots. Now,
it's one thing to have you know Agga the Bulldog.
It's one thing to have those guys, but a cambl
(14:43):
that's gonna be a little bit tougher, although it would
be fun. And as you know, we're all about fun
on this show, Nick, not only just fun with Campbell's
I guess, but also fun facts, as it's now time
for fun facts with Dave.
Speaker 7 (14:56):
Hey, have you ever heard me? Here's the term fun fact.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
I got a couple of fun facts here because.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
I have a fun fight.
Speaker 7 (15:03):
You have a fun fact.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
I do first time in history this has happened at
eight games, five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists.
Spent a long time since we've seen a game like this.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
The fun out here, This game's fun. Okay?
Speaker 7 (15:18):
If that fact is fun?
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Yeah? Are you fired up?
Speaker 7 (15:21):
Fired up for fun.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
Facts with Day?
Speaker 7 (15:26):
All right?
Speaker 5 (15:27):
The facts are always more fun after a win, and
that is indeed true here today, even though this win
will not count on the official record as the season
gets going, but it is still going to be fun nonetheless,
although it starts, you know, kind of a little bit
on a negative note. Here the Badgers shot nine of
nineteen from the free throw line. That is just forty
seven percent. Do you know how many times last year
(15:50):
the Badgers shot under fifty percent from the free throw line?
Speaker 7 (15:55):
Zero?
Speaker 5 (15:56):
That would be zero, correct, Nick, Do you know how
many times they shot under sixty six percent last year
from the free throw line?
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Once?
Speaker 7 (16:06):
Zero?
Speaker 5 (16:07):
Sixty six point seven percent? So two thirds was their
lowest last season against Illinois fourteen of twenty one in
that game. So, and this is a minimum of fifteen
attempts as well. So this game, I mean, this was
practically a complete anomaly from the free throw line for Wisconsin.
So you know, it's better to get it out now
(16:31):
when the games don't count. I would rather have it
now in this exhibition against Platteville than going nine of
nineteen from the free throw line in Big Ten play
in a game that actually counts. So there's that positive
side of it. It really probably won't get much worse
than that. I don't want to say it won't, but
probably Nolan Winter, as we pointed out, fifteen rebounds here tonight,
(16:55):
is that his career high. No, it actually is not.
His career high for rebounds on the game is seventeen,
and he set that mark against Michigan State back in
March towards towards the end of last season and our
last fun fact here because it is Guarding Against Cancer
(17:15):
Night at the Cole Center. Since December of twenty sixteen,
the Guarding Against Cancer Initiative has raised more than ten
million dollars for cancer research and patient care across Wisconsin.
So it doesn't get much more fun than that raising
that kind of money for such a great cause to
(17:37):
help out so many people across the state.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
So that is remarkable.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Yeah, that's remarkable, and that is fun facts with Dave
and yeah, it's fun to raise money for those things.
And Greg Gard and his family and this whole initiative
has just been fantastic and you just see it every
single time when we get to the game, how important
it is bringing out uh, you know, the doctors, the patients.
(18:04):
It is really just a touching scene.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
It's great. It's so special.
Speaker 6 (18:09):
But he talked about the community here, whether it is
directly with alumni people here in Madison, but just with SCons,
Tonight's and those that have connections to Wisconsin to donate
to something like that, it's just meaningful and it certainly
is close to the heart with coach Guard, both coaches
here Tonight Guard brothers, Jeff and Greg and I just
(18:32):
you know, it's it's nice to be loosely associated with
something so meaningful if we're talking fun facts. I mean,
what's happening right now in Los Angeles is a lot
of fun too. I mean the Blue Jays are.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
Oh yeah, that is that act as well. The Blue
are up six to one heading to the bottom of
the eighth. Uh so they could go up three to
two in that series if they're able to close out
the win in Game five.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Plaits now suck. I don't know, I mean, these are
these are questions were asking.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
Well, he didn't against the unfortunately.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Yeah, that's that's a non fun fact.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
But yeah, back to basketball. Yeah, Nolan Winter, he's gonna
have to be that guy. Last year he was the four.
This year he's gonna be the five. Right, So there's
a little bit more of a inside the paint responsibility
on his shoulders, getting those rebounds and being the big man.
He beefed up a little bit season by season. Now
Here in year three, it's an opportunity for him to
(19:24):
assume that Stephen Crowell role and that comes with a
little bit more physicality, a little bit more emphasis on
getting to the boards as Austin Rapt takes over as
maybe the more outside focused member of that group.
Speaker 5 (19:37):
Yeah, it's it's so important to Nolan Winter what he's
going to be this to this team. Stephen Krow was
the big guy last year for Wisconsin that you know,
they relied on a lot as the five. Nolan Winter
kind of almost took it over a little bit in
uh in last year. Now he's going to have to
(19:59):
be that going forward. Wisconsin needs him to be an
adding strength. That's an important part of it because at
his height, at his size, I mean I can attest
it is very difficult to kind of put on weight
there and put on that kind of muscle mass. But
Wisconsin is you know, working on getting him up there
and he is making that kind of progress. So this year,
(20:21):
Nolan Winter is listed at seven foot, two hundred and
thirty five pounds. Last year on the numbers, okay, he
still was listed at two thirty five, but you did say,
Nick that that he has beefed up and he has
gotten a lot stronger heading into the season.
Speaker 6 (20:36):
Yeah, him and a lot of these different guys, and
they did highlight some of the freshmen that are pretty
muscular coming in the Wisconsin kids, in particular Kinsinger and Garlock.
Speaker 3 (20:45):
Whatever they got going.
Speaker 6 (20:46):
On here, this weight room, these facilities I'm sure are
much nicer than what guys had in high school. They
got nutrition is, they got dietitians, they got all the
people that you need here to become the best version
of yourself physically. And Nolan Winter came in as your
traditional string being, just like Butchie as a true freshman
at Big Man, and then built, built and built, and
(21:07):
now he's pretty built as a human being. He's gonna
he's gonna have to muscle down there. There are gonna
be some really big, big ten fives that he's gonna
be battling with down there, and he's just gonna have
to work.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
And I think that he's up for the task.
Speaker 6 (21:20):
But tonight showed a lot better than what we had
seen specifically from him against Oklahoma. I'd say almost the
rest of the roster look better against Oklahoma than they
did tonight. But opportunities await. The season matters starting Monday.
These games will not count. This is not gonna be
the second highest rebounding total in Nolan Winter's career in
(21:41):
the stat book because it'll be a race from history
once tonight's game ends.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Yeah, it will.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
But what will not be erased from history is Nick
Osen from Badger two four seven, As he is going
to join us here on the other side of this break.
We're gonna get his thoughts on this exhibition win and
leading into the regular season coming up next.
Speaker 7 (22:02):
That's all on the other side.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
The Badgers win sixty nine to fifty three over Platteville.
Speaker 7 (22:07):
Stay tuned.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
This is the JANK Securedy Solutions basketball postgame show.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
Nigger Not to Wait by Roady Brody with the steel
seven seconds left of the half. Brody across half cour
with four with three Roady spins of the lead, floats
it up, it in Andrew Roady takes care of business
the steel at one end, the bucket at the other,
and the Badgers will take a nine point lead into
the locker room at half time.

Dave Gasper here along with Nick Brucewitz. Badgers win sixty
nine to fifty three over UW Plattvil And for more
info we turn to our guy Nick Osin from Drew
(23:00):
two four to seven, And Nick, this game was one
that most people expected to be a blowout by thirty
or forty or fifty points, but instead this was a
two point game, kind of late into the second half.
Does the relative closeness and lackluster performance here from Wisconsin
does that concern you at all heading into the regular season?
Speaker 4 (23:22):
Yeah, Dave, great to be back with you, my friend.
I wouldn't really say so.
Speaker 9 (23:29):
I wouldn't really say, man that it kind of has
me concerned Dave going forward, simply because though it wasn't
necessarily what we expected, right, they were able to kind
of hit that second or third gear and go on
that sixteen oh run, which was obviously really important.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
I liked what I saw from the defense.
Speaker 9 (23:46):
Now I will say this, if some of the kind
of open three looks and certainly the free throws, if
that kind of continues, that will have me a little
bit concerned, because obviously last year the free throw shooting
was so so important to the success offensively.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
For that group.
Speaker 9 (24:02):
But again, it's early, you know. It was one of
those that I was kind of writing about on there,
Dave like, Okay, hey, I'm not expecting this.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
You know this needs to turn around a little bit.
Speaker 9 (24:11):
But personally, I don't know about you guys, but I
never felt that it was like really going to be
a platteul Win or Badger's.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
Loss or anything.
Speaker 9 (24:19):
It just probably wasn't as clean and pretty as maybe
a lot.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
Of us expected. Let's start with the positives.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
You look at Nolan Winter, we all felt like he
had not the performance he would have looked to have
had in that first exhibition AAST Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (24:32):
It felt like he struggled to find his shot, wasn't.
Speaker 6 (24:35):
Necessarily able to execute the game plan offensively at the
level that I.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Think most expect him to tonight. Fifteen boards at minimum
is a strong performance, But offensively it felt like he
picked and he choose and he found good looks eight
of eleven from the field in this one. What'd you
make from Nolan Winter? Bruce?
Speaker 9 (24:51):
I thought he was terrific, you know, even obviously the
optimist in me, as we say, you know, Nolan was
not at his best Friday, and he was just us
in the press or that was a game that you know,
these are these are his words I thought were pretty,
pretty cool, pretty funny.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
He threw that one out the window. He threw that
one out quickly.
Speaker 9 (25:08):
And obviously the competition in the Big Ten, like you
alluded to a few minutes ago, bruise and the previous
segment is going to be much much better than you know.
Of course, with all due respect Platteville at this level.
But I just loved his mentality early. I don't think
he took a bad shot. I mean, obviously barely missed
any But I thought, excuse me, yeah, thought that they were.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Good, full clear. He seems like you're battling hiccups right now.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
You got a little bit.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
You're good.
Speaker 9 (25:37):
We keep rolling on. But I won't even think about it.
I might have to take a sip of water, but
you're good. No, I thought he was terrific. I thought, defensively,
he was pretty good. And it was just really refreshing,
of course, to see that from one of the Badgers.
Dave asked a long question.
Speaker 7 (25:51):
Yeah, I'll take some time. I'll give you a moment
here to catch your breath.
Speaker 5 (25:55):
We're talking with Nick Osen of twenty four to seven
Sports Badgers Insiders beat writer. He is a great follow
on Twitter at the real Nick Osen. You can get
a ton of fantastic information there from him as well.
And Nick, one of the negatives I suppose to this
game the turnovers fifteen in total, seven of them from
(26:18):
Austin Rapp. I'd have to imagine that that's not going
to be something we see more regularly from Austin Rapp
throughout the season, Right, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (26:26):
Dave, I certainly wouldn't think so.
Speaker 9 (26:28):
And I think, look, I've written about how he's kind
of in this role of you know, obviously transitioning to
this level, but also playing up with.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
The ball in transition a little more. I think that
it's important.
Speaker 9 (26:41):
But in a role like that, you really have to be,
you know, obviously a little bit more careful with things.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
And this cannot be happening against a group like.
Speaker 9 (26:49):
Platteville because obviously that could translate to some better teams.
And Dave, you know, full disclosure, I'm actually this is
like my Jordan flu game today. Actually got a no, no,
no sick, I got my wisdom teeth taken out answer.
This is kind of one of those results. It's like
I wasn't gonna miss a game.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
I wasn't gonna so I do appreciate the understanding.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
No, we can always look back at this postgame show
and and and you know, if anyone questions if you're
a grinder, if you're really working through it, if you're
willing to put your your body on the line for it,
we all know.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
I mean that's I mean that that normally takes people
out for a while. So the fact that you're you're
grinding through, I mean, that's that's impressive.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
It was actually this morning that he had them pulled.
Was it yesterday?
Speaker 4 (27:33):
Yesterday?
Speaker 6 (27:34):
Brayden Carrington is one of those guys that you're not
gonna look at in this game statistically and he's gonna
pop off. But I felt in the first half you
saw the value in what he can provide this team
and what they were attracted to when considering him as
a transfer portal addition. Pretty quickly he was able to
make his way into this game and show up second
(27:54):
chance point, able to put it in himself. He had
a great assist to Blackwall on a three. Carrington's one
of those guys that I think as the season goes on,
his role might develop a little bit more him some
of these other guys Bilawskis.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
What have you seen from them so far into exhibition games.
Speaker 9 (28:11):
Yeah, guys, I thought that Carrington was somebody that actually
helped turn the game a little bit. I mean, I
understand they had that big run in the second half
of them being the Badgers, but just his his defensive intensity,
he made a couple of good buckets. I think we
saw kind of late in some of the scrimmage days
and then certainly last week against Oklahoma like he was,
you know, a little bit trigger happy from some of
(28:32):
the three point range, which you can't always you know,
kind of be in this role. But I thought he
was smooth tonight. I think be a Lusis could be
really good. And Garlock is gonna have to grow up quickly, guys,
because obviously we know with the news of Elijah Gray
no longer with the team.
Speaker 7 (28:48):
Yeah, they're going to have to make up that loss.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
And Nick, as always, we appreciate you hopping on go
get yourself some more water, rest up after losing those
wisdom teeth, but you're still wise. You're still sharing your
wisdom with us after every single game on this Jane
k Ssecurty Solutions postgame show, and we will talk to
you next time when the games count. Coming up next Nick,
the regular season.
Speaker 9 (29:13):
The games count, and I promise I will not have
hiccups the next time. But I battle folks. I think
it was good.
Speaker 7 (29:18):
They're good.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Battle through a warrior over there, Nick Osin Badger two
four seven. Follow him on Twitter at the real Nick Osin.
Coming up on the other side, we'll wrap things up.
We'll hear from Greg Guard his conversation with Brian Butcher
and Matt Leapey.
Speaker 7 (29:32):
We got that coming up on the other side.
Speaker 5 (29:34):
This is the Jane K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Winter Lower the Ride and he sends it down Old
in the Winter with the flush fifty three forty five
Wisconsin with eight minutes to play, six point run for
the Badge.

The Badgers take down UW Plattville sixty nine to fifty
three in this final exhibition game before the regular season
(30:22):
begins next week against Campbell So Wisconsin had a little
bit of a close game late here in the second
half forty seven forty five before Wisconsin went on a
fourteen nothing run to pull away. You have to imagine
when it was getting close there that Greg Guard might
have been a little stress, a little nervous, trying to
figure some things out with this group. And Greg Guard
(30:44):
he caught up with our Matt Lapey and Brian Butch
after the game.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
Joins this court.
Speaker 8 (30:49):
So I will at least, you know, you thought maybe
Jeff would, you know, not have his guys play as
well and as hard as they did.
Speaker 7 (30:55):
But but you do, right that just the way that
they are.
Speaker 8 (30:58):
Good, good night, good things to build on. Good teaching tape.
Speaker 10 (31:02):
Yeah, there'll be a lot of good teaching tape. And
I think, you know, the thing is trying. I thought
we were better. The biggest thing when you shoot six
for twenty five, which is going to happen, right, there
will be a game when we shoot eighteen for twenty five,
but our ability to defend and I finally found a
combination there towards the back half the second half that
could understand what we needed to do, had the experience
(31:24):
to be able to do what we needed to do
and put string stops together. So you know, I think
they told me we had ten kills, so that's three
ten times three consecutive stops. So that's you know, when
when the ball doesn't go in, you have to be
able to defend and take care of it. We didn't
take care of it great. Specifically you know Aussie and
he said, that's the most term verse he ever had
(31:46):
in his life. I said, better be highwater parked there.
But you know they're under I think getting everyone to
understand the attention to detail that it takes on every
possession and we have high standards and you know, we
continue to improve and demand better and that's what we'll
(32:07):
continue to help. That'll help this group grow.
Speaker 11 (32:09):
When you look at the defensive end early on in
the game, a lot of straight line drives, a lot
of just getting there real quick and then it's a
quick turn amund it. So you you teach that, But
what are some of those teaching points that you kind
of get through to your guys, like, hey, we've got
to be better because the competition is going to continue
to against.
Speaker 10 (32:27):
Ball pressure gets better the second the second half of
that first half, and I think the last eight minutes.
We were better defensively because we turned up the heat
on the ball better and we're more more physical with it.
We were aggressive, we forced more turnovers. It was really
a mindset thing of taking it, you know, taking it
to them and not you know, not sitting back on
(32:48):
your heels. And I think once, you know, I thought
JANICKI gave us some good minutes both you know, the
stat line isn't you know a lot, what's he o
for two? But I thought his energy and he's played
so he understands some of the nuances when you get
in those small ball lineups of how you have to
cover up the ball and do that. So I think
(33:08):
we were just more aggressive on the ball, ignited our defense.
Speaker 8 (33:12):
Is that one of the things we talk about the
evolution of the offense and you two years ago seventy
five points a game, last year eighty points a game.
How things changed, But it's one of the things that
are the same if it's a freshman or somebody out
of the portal. Maybe not roady necessarily, but just understanding
the defensive end of the floor that.
Speaker 10 (33:29):
That hasn't changed, that hasn't changed, and the demand to
take care of the ball.
Speaker 7 (33:33):
I don't care how fast we're We.
Speaker 10 (33:35):
Were top ten in the country I think last year
in fused amount of turners per game, and we scored
eighty some points a game, so that there's no correlation there.
We're gonna have more possessions, do a good job for
more possessions, there's the answer to that. So we're not
I'm not giving in them, you know, an out because
we're gonna play a little faster or have more possessions.
(33:57):
We still have to take care of the ball. And
part of that is just fundamental only playing off two feet,
you know, not getting sped up, not letting the game
speed you up mentally, just things. And a couple more
my fault there too, because we went small with Blackwell
at the four just to try to cover up some things,
and we got discombobulated offensively. We're we're accustomed to playing
(34:18):
with two bigs on the floor, and the spacing and
the nuances and the synergy together got worse than what
it was.
Speaker 11 (34:25):
But I thought Nolan did a good job of catching
the ball at the high goals or yeah, three point
line and playing with great pace, and we talked about
it during the game. The other bigs, they're new don't
necessarily understand the pace that needs to be played at.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
And it's one of those things.
Speaker 11 (34:39):
That I think, you know, you see Nolan's night, what
he was able to do only one three, but eight
of eleven super efficient. Why he catches the ball, that
top swings, it sets the ball, screen guard comes off
the screen. You've got the pocket pass like great pace.
How do you translate that to the other bigs that
obviously it's somewhat new, but Nolan's been in the system law.
Speaker 10 (34:58):
You should have that advance experience, you know. And it's
and it's not only the bigs, it's the guards too.
Of changing sides of the floor. We rarely get a
pocket pass on a first side. You know, you have
to you have to move the defense horizontally. And we
did better at more of that in the second half.
We got started with a lot of pocket passes and
two man games on on the open side. So part
(35:20):
of that's experience of just understanding you have to do
it over and over and over and and stay at
it within a game, keep the pressure on them, and
then our perimeter has got to do a you know,
I think we we talked about that late in the
first half when we changed sides of the floor, we
got pretty easy looks. You know, we got stuff right
point blank. It's when we against any team, if you
play on one side of the floor, yeah you're you're
(35:43):
you're doing the defense a huge, big favor.
Speaker 7 (35:48):
Yeah, nobody wants to play defense.
Speaker 11 (35:49):
Any kid that out there that says I love defense
more than offense or Lions you did, Brian, I had
to learn I better play some kind of defense.
Speaker 8 (35:57):
If Kamarie McGee and system.
Speaker 11 (36:01):
No kid that likes defense more than offense, I will
not believe that.
Speaker 8 (36:05):
Final thought, Greg, this we talked about it last night
at the tip all functioning on your on your radio
and TV shows we recorded this week. This is about
more than the game tonight, your self, Jeff out there,
we saw a number of people recognize again it shows
the work you and Michelle, the incredible generosity of the
people in this state. Pretty heard warming to see.
Speaker 10 (36:24):
It is, you know, and I didn't you know, I
appreciate everybody coming in for tonight and recognizing obviously those organizations,
but all the other people to get that are so
important and vital. There's a lot of behind the scenes
work that goes on. I know, Michelle and I's name
goes on it, uh and our family name goes on.
But there's so many people here in Madison and also
(36:46):
across the state that are so giving and so you know,
so generous with their time and with their resources, and
we all know we're in this. That's when we're all
on the same team, right, We're all on the same
team trying to fight this disease. And and it makes
you united front to be able to make advances.
Speaker 11 (37:02):
And what I love about a coach is you bring,
you know, attention to the groups that are out there
help whether it's a gas card, whether it's that, Like
that's what people don't realize about our family with our son, Like,
we didn't realize how many groups were out there until
we went through it ourselves and are going through it.
And it's just those little things, right that makes such
a big impact of the day to day approach of
(37:25):
it that you're bringing awareness to. Yeah, I mean everybody
knows the big names, don't get me wrong, you still
need that, but it's the little, the little organizations that
are having such an impact as well.
Speaker 10 (37:35):
Yeah, cancer Journey you're thinking about, Well, you come for
radiation or chemo or whatever treatment at a hospital or
at a cancer center, and then well what are the
other six days of the week, you know, And that
journey takes a toll on the caregivers obviously on the patient,
but the caregivers too around them. So whether it's rides
or meals or gas cards or massage therapy or wigs
(37:59):
or they're so many, so many, you know, grassroots needs
across our state and we're just fortunate to be able
to help in some way.
Speaker 8 (38:07):
Again, applaud all of you involved for this, and uh,
congrats on tonight. Now it's now it comes out of
fan It's real. Yeah, now it gets real. It's time
all right, you bet, thanks guys, head coach Greg Guard
joining us court Cybele.
Speaker 5 (38:19):
All right, there was head coach Greg Guard joining mantle
Pay and Brian Butch after this one.
Speaker 7 (38:24):
And a lot of teach tape, a lot of.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Learning tape that Wisconsin you can take from this game, Nick,
and really, uh, now, as as I mentioned at the end,
now it's going to count for real.
Speaker 6 (38:38):
Yeah, absolutely, Campbell's gonna see a different Badger's effort.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
I think come Monday.
Speaker 6 (38:43):
There's just a flip is switched, and I think that
you gotta look at a switch.
Speaker 7 (38:50):
Is flipped, not as there flip that around.
Speaker 6 (38:53):
Switch is flipped come Monday. These guys understand these games count.
I get the effort against Oklahoma was excellent and you
expected an equal one here tonight.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
But it's human nature.
Speaker 6 (39:05):
You don't necessarily play down to your competition always. But
it felt like Wisconsin was not necessarily the more urgent
team here tonight. I think come Monday, when you're playing
for real against Campbell, it's gonna be a different effort.
And I look forward to it because Dave, I think
it's gonna be a great season. We've had two strong
ones so far, and I think this one's gonna live
up just so like just like the last two did
(39:27):
for us.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
Yeah, I would agree. I think this is gonna be
a very good season for Wisconsin. You can see the
talent that they have on this team, how they put
it together. Greg Gard has done a wonderful job in
the transfer portal in recruiting getting guys in because they
did lose a lot of guys from last year. You
don't have a ton of guys in your rotation that
are back. You got John Blackwell, you got Nolan Winter,
you got Jack Janicki, who came off the bench quite
(39:50):
a bit last year. Those are your three main guys
that were in the rotation that are returning for this year.
It's a lot of new faces after that, a lot
of players that have to gel with each other to
figure things out. So that gets going in earnest starting
next week, starting on Monday, when the Campbell Fighting Camels
come to the Cole Center, and after that game, we
(40:12):
will be there with you as well on the Jane
Ksecurity Solutions Basketball Postgame Show. The regular season is going
to begin next Thank you for listening. For our producer
Casey James four, Nick Bruswiz, I am Dave Gasper once again.
The final score here tonight Wisconsin sixty nine, uw Platteville
six or fifty three. We will see you in the
(40:35):
regular season. Thank you for listening. This has been the
Jane K Security Solutions Basketball Postgame Show, All at.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Three in the air, Kunco no good.
Speaker 8 (40:44):
As time runs outs and this one is over, well
tell you what Jeff Guard's team came to play, got
within two in the second half. The Badger's pulled away
from there, but another feeling that Platteville is going to
be a problem again or it's still in The WIAC
badge was winned by sixteen.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
Things are clean up, but it all counts Beginning Monday,
