Now, here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Aways.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
Welcome into the JANK Security Solutions basketball postgame show. I'm
your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick Brucewitz. Wisconsin Badgers
defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers eighty seven fifty six. You
can join the conversation with us on the hotline six
oh eight three two one thirteen ten WK. Question to
you is what is your confidence level in this team

(00:44):
heading into their big game against Arizona up next on Friday.
In this game, though Wisconsin, they went on a twenty
four to notzering run in the first half to take
the lead, take command of this game, and they never
look back from there, winning by thirty one points. Frankly, Nick,
this is what's the best that this Badgers team has
looked all season. What really stuck out to you watching

(01:06):
this game.

Speaker 5 (01:07):
Well, they keep taking a punch early, and they keep
fighting back, and they keep fighting back in a big way. Right,
They're not just sticking neck and neck with these groups.
They get up early on them, they're dominating the rest
of the game. Holy Cross, it was the final thirty minutes.
Wisconsin really turned a corner in their last game. It
was a little bit less aggressive. They were able to
take advantage of a Montana stay team that is a

(01:27):
three point shooting, not necessarily great defensive team. And then
today Appalachian State goes up early seventeen to eight, and
then the Badgers just dominated the rest of the way. Right,
you extrapolate that out the rest of the game. You're
talking about a thirty nine, seventy nine to thirty nine game, Right,
They whooped them, and that's what Wisconsin needs to do

(01:48):
in these matchups. We heard from Brian Buch following the game,
of course, with Matt Leape and Butcher's biggest takeaway for me,
what I heard from him was that they're staying focused
and they're getting better. And we saw today they emptied
the bench late. I mean, the last ten minutes was
just a revolving door. Okay, this guy's tired, put this
guy in, this guy's tired, put this guy in. And
he saw that this team has depth if they're playing well.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Yeah, they do, and they're able to take advantage of
that big lead and get a lot of these guys
some playing time. Marcus Ilver getting five minutes there at
the end. Jack JANICKI, then you know, emptying the whole bench,
Isaac Gard, Chris Hodges, Knop Hunter, Free Tag, You're able
to get all these guys in which which was really
great to see. But frankly, I mean Wisconsin, they're able

(02:34):
to get there by having that kind of scoring run.
And it's remarkable too, considering where they were when this
game started. I mean, Wisconsin looked rough that first stretch
there there were four of their they made four of
their first sixteen shots. Was not very good. They could
not buy a bucket early on. They were really struggling,

(02:57):
especially down there in the paint, and that's how Apple
laschan State was able to jump out to that seventeen
to eight lead. But then from there they go on
that massive run where they make seven shots in a
row and they're able to get fifteen consecutive stops there
for Apple on Apple Lachan State for offense. So use

(03:18):
that to just swing the entire game. And that was
so important for them to jump out and do that
early and from there not looking back to just staying
in command and really app latch and State. They were
not able to get anything going even after that twenty
four to nothing run was over Apple Lachian, State could
not find any rhythm.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
Yeah, and that's what Wisconsin needs to do. They need
to perform like that on both sides of the ball
because early in each game this season, their defense is
taken a while. They're sleepwalking to open these games, and
Wisconsin then has to respond. It'll be interesting to see
how Wisconsin can recover if they have the opportunity come
Friday when a team like Arizona comes to town. If

(03:58):
you're hosting a team that caliber and you give them
the early lead, you know, I could bet everything I
have it's not gonna be as easy to come back
and then dominate the rest of the game. So Wisconsin
can't afford to start as slow as they have been.
Coach Guard knows that. I'm sure that's his number one
message for this group as they prepare for the Wildcats
come Friday. But this is a group that Wisconsin needs

(04:20):
to be better early. But you really can't nitpick much
from this game and complain how they ended up performing.

Speaker 6 (04:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Absolutely, you can afford to fall behind early and make
it up later. When you're facing Appalachian State or Montana
State or Holy Cross. You can afford to do that.
In those kinds of games, You've got plenty of time,
plenty of talent to bounce back. When you're facing the
number ten team in the country in Arizona, you can't
really afford to fall down big early. You don't seem

(04:48):
to have the firepower to bounce back. And I mean,
just looking at what Arizona has done this year. I
mean they've scored ninety three points against Canissius University in
their first game, then one hundred and two points against
Old DOMINIU, and yesterday Canecious University apologies Canisius University ninety
three points against them. So I mean Arizona, I mean

(05:09):
they have tons of offensive firepower. And Wisconsin they are
gonna have to be on their a game in order
to keep it close and to get Arizona down from
scoring one hundred points essentially a game. And you know,
they showed great ability here with with Appalachian States, how
they're able to get those stops. Granted, different types of

(05:32):
talent between those two teams, but still it does lead
to some positivity that we're seeing Wisconsin play much better
all around basketball in this game heading into the big
one against Arizona.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
Yeah, no doubt. And they sent up a lot of
threes as they have so far this season, eight of
twenty eight from deep four Wisconsin. A lot of those
misses in what we would call garbage time late in
this matchup, right, they weren't necessarily they're a shooters and
a moments it was kind of their bench guys with
an opportunity to get a shot up. But Jack Robinson

(06:06):
with his first career bucket today, that was pretty cool
to see him make that three late. But yeah, Wisconsin,
in this matchup, they dominated. There's no if ans or
butts about it. This is how you need to win
and that's how they did it. Right. The box score
will tell you the exact story of this game. Right.
You hear that how often the box score doesn't tell
the score of the game. This tells the exact score.

(06:26):
It was not close. It wasn't close, and Wisconsin was
the reason for that. Apple Achian State couldn't get anything
going offensively at the free throw line, they're seven of thirteen.
That's fifty four percent if you round up, and that's
that's just the making of a poor performance. And I
would love to credit Wisconsin for the greater portion of

(06:47):
why that happened. They played good defense and then apple
Agian State with poor shots.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
They did excellent defense for the Badgers. Eighteen turnovers by
Appalachian State, fourteen of them on steam by the Badgers.
A great performance for them. And Max Klesmant leading the
team with five steals of his own, so just a
good all around game from Klesmet He was among the

(07:13):
points leaders as well. We'll get more into that. We'll
also have fun facts with Dave coming up a little
bit later on as well, Wisconsin beating Appalachian State and
moving to three and zero on the season. We'll have
more coming up as well, and we want to hear
from you on the hotline. Six eight, three, two, one
thirteen ten Glove. It tells your confidence level in this

(07:33):
team heading into their big game against Arizona on Friday.
We'll be right back. Wisconsin wins eighty seven fifty six.
You're listening to the Jay and kse Curty Solutions Basketball
postgame show.

Speaker 7 (07:53):
Break out let the Klesman Mac's up the right sideline
of the front fourd for the Badgers, throwing a Winter
drives to the rim, lay up good, it counts foul well,
the Badger's not wasting any time getting the ball up
the floor, and and one for Nolan winter Is.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
The Badgers pulled and within seven.

Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Bruswitz. The Badgers
win eighty seven fifty six over the Mountaineers of Appalachian State.
And the big scores in this one John Tanjay leaving

(08:31):
the way with seventeen points for Wisconsin and Stephen Crowell
also with seventeen points in this one, and a lot
of points in the paint here, especially with Krawe. Tanjay
had a bunch of layups as well, but forty eight
points in a paint for Wisconsin just twenty four for
Appleachian State. That was a big difference in this game,
especially as the Badgers were going on that twenty four

(08:54):
to zering run in the first half. Krow layup, Krow layup,
blackwelled Hanja McGee just lay up after layup after layup,
five straight in that in that stretch run, and really, uh,
you know, that was something that Wisconsin made a point
to attack as they were going. As they were going

(09:15):
into that run, there was just no answer for app
Latch and State. I know they like shooting shooting up
threes this year, but you had the you had the
opening in the paint, and Wisconsin took it today.

Speaker 5 (09:27):
Yeah, Big Steve stepped up.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Right.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
He had thirteen total points coming into today. He had
seventeen in today today's matchup. He took a total of
eleven shots before today. He had a twelve in today's matchup. Right, So,
Stephen Kraw was a guy that we we keep our
eye on because we have a lot of fun with him,
whether it's Paton Wakashaw calling in to tell us about
the USS Corral, the the aircraft carrier or not. Steven

(09:53):
needs to be a big part of what they do
on a given night. He can't afford to have performances
where he only puts up four shots like he did
against Montana State. This is a team that needs to
be able to work it from the inside out. They
want to shoot a lot of threes, and they are
shooting a lot of threes. But the only way that
that's going to work is if you can make the
defense think that you have a low post attack. And

(10:16):
that's what Wisconsin has seen slowly grow over the last
couple of games. And I pointed out to you, and
you certainly agree with me. It's a lot of fun
watching Stephen Krow and Nolan Winter play volleyball with the
ball above everybody else. And that's what you can do
in a matchup with a school appeal Agian state. You
have the height advantage, you get the offensive rebounds. And
Wisconsin took advantage of that over and over and over

(10:39):
again tonight.

Speaker 4 (10:40):
Yeah, fourteen offensive rebounds for Wisconsin in this game. Nolan
Winter had a pretty good game as well, ten point
eight rebounds, just two rebounds, shy of a double double
for him, But Nolan Winter also a strong game as well.
In twenty three minutes, Steven Kroll seventeen points, just one rebound,
interestingly enough, as they were kind of going back and forth,

(11:01):
but a really good game for him and and exactly.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Nick.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
He needs to be a big part of this offense,
as Greg Gard has talked about numerous times coming into
the year. During the year, they need him to be
more aggressive, they need him to be more consistent. We
saw that aggressiveness today, which is very good to see,
and now it just needs to continue. It needs to

(11:25):
continue as you face the tougher opponents like Arizona, because
if Arizona can shut down Kraal, it's gonna make things
much more difficult for Wisconsin to win that game because
then you're just gonna be relying on shooting up a
lot of three pointers and Arizona it's gonna be a
lot tougher on the three point line than Holy Cross
or Montana State has been, so that that's gonna be

(11:50):
crucial for Wisconsin as they get ready for their game
against Arizona. But yeah, you have the big guys down there,
you have the size advantage, you get, you got to
you have to take it. And that's what they were
able to do, winning in the paint. And it's really
kind of the success we've seen of old for Wisconsin.
When they have these seven footers down there, you win

(12:11):
in the paint. That's been that's been the mold for
Wisconsin going back years.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
And it's worked and it's worked over and over again,
and we have the luxury the ability to work with
one of those big men and Brian buch on a
given day, who loves his big boys, who always highlights
what they're doing down low. And I do find it
a little crazy that Krawle had the one rebound And
how in my brain and how I can configure that
is Winter kept getting the tip that then would land

(12:37):
in Kroll's hands and then he would pass it. So
no rebound for Kraal because it was tipped to him
by Nolan Winter. But regardless, this is a team that
doesn't have a great amount of depth when it comes
to big men, right we look at guys like Marcus
Ilver and Chris Hodges and Grepi as guys that fortunate
enough to get into the game. And Carter Gilmour last

(12:59):
year year's potential biggest downfall was that he was the
one that would have to spell Tyler Wall and Steven Krowell.
And so they don't have a great amount of depth
there and you've got to play smart, but you got
to take advantage when you do have your guys out there,
and it seems like nearly every minute of the game,
you'll have either Winter or Crow playing the five and

(13:20):
sometimes the five and the four together.

Speaker 4 (13:22):
Yeah, and I think the development of Winter this year
has been so key for Wisconsin because you know, when
they brought him in, I mean he was a freshman.
Last year, you could you could kind of tell as
the season was going on, it's like, Okay, he looks
very inexperienced and still kind of getting beaten around there.
Couldn't really trust him in those big moments. But this year,
you can definitely tell he's gotten a lot better. He's improved,

(13:44):
and he's earning a lot more minutes this year as well,
twenty three minutes of game action for him, So I
think for him becoming stronger, improving his game, that's been
a huge development for Wisconsin because they've needed I mean,
Marcus Silver had a good couple of minutes there, you know,
five minutes game action, had his steal, you know, poked
it away, took it down the court for the layup
and the and one. So, you know, great moment there

(14:07):
for Marcus Silver, But that was just kind of the
one moment he doesn't get a ton of playing time.
But Nolan Winter, I mean that that development has been
so key for Wisconsin, and that's really kind of what Wisconsin.
That's what the model has been for so long. You
get these these talented guys in as freshmen and it
takes a couple of years, but you develop them and

(14:27):
you build them up and you see them get better
year over year.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
And that is the tough reality of today's climate when
it comes to collegiate sports, specifically college basketball, is you
have a belief that you're going to have the guy,
or at least in the past, you'd be naive to
think you have him for four years now. But in
the past you had the belief, Okay, freshman year, let's
get his legs under him. Let's see what he can do.

(14:52):
Maybe he's a part of the rotation. Maybe he's not.
Sophomore year, got to take that leap junior year. Now
we're starting to like this guy. He's going to be
a big part of our senior year. Okay, he's a star.
That's not the reality anymore. And aj Store is an
example of that. Whether you want to look at Saint
John's or Wisconsin Store goes from Saint John's as a
freshman to Wisconsin as a sophomore, now with Kansas as

(15:14):
a junior. Right, it's so hard to find the guy
that's going to stay with the program. And John Blackwell,
fingers crossed, could be that guy. He was a big
part of the picture last year as a true freshman
as a guard. Now this year he seems to be
their starting one. And now maybe next year he becomes
an even better player. Step by step and Nolan Winter
to the same conversation, same game plan. And Greg Stemsa

(15:36):
comes back this year, joins the coaching staff. He played
in the NBA, played overseas, he coached overseas, he coached
in the NBA. He has that level of experience, that
breadth of experience to work with a Stephen Crowlin and
Nolan Winter and take their game to the next level.
And on top of that, he's not just working with
those players, He's working with the whole roster. So I
do like last year it was Kirk Penny, this year

(15:59):
Greg Stemsma, the coaching staff, the experience that they have
and what they can offer. Greg guard has surrounded himself
with the right group. In my opinion, Yeah, it's definitely
been a very well coached group, and we're seeing the
results of some of this development that these guys have
had on them. And you know, just a.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
Couple of years ago, free throw shooting was really bad,
and now all of a sudden, free throw shooting has
been really good again today thirteen of sixteen from the
free throw line. They missed their first three from the
charity stripe, but then after that they were perfect the
rest of the way. So, you know, Wisconsin, they have
been very strong at the free throw line, taking full
advantage of when they get there and getting as many
points as possible. So that is another great thing to

(16:40):
see that that was a downfall of this team a
couple of years ago, but now, especially after Kirk Penny's arrival,
that's gotten a whole lot better as well. So for Wisconsin,
a great all around game offensively, defensively. You know, after
their very slow start where they went four of six

(17:00):
team from the field, they shot fifty three percent the
rest of the way. They were twenty nine to fifty
three shooting after that when they started their their twenty
four to nothing run, shot fifty three percent the rest
of the game, and frankly, they just dominated offensively defensively,
every single thing that you could ask for you saw

(17:20):
out of this team, and it gives me a little
bit more confidence about this team heading into their matchup
with Arizona. It's still gonna be tough, it's gonna be
a tight margin, but also it's gonna be here at
the Cole Center, and that has given the Badgers some
pretty good home field advantage in the past. On Friday night,
it should be packed in here and that should give

(17:42):
Wisconsin a little bit of help, no doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (17:45):
And this is an environment that has been much maligned
over the last handful of years is not bringing enough juice.
So it will be a whole litmus test on Friday
to see if they can step up for the big game.
Because you know, today the crowd got into it a
little bit, but we're talking about sixty percent Phil. It's
it's a game that you know pretty early you've won.
It's going to be different against Arizona, and fingers crossed,

(18:08):
the fans can hope for it that there is a
chance to win late in that game. Because this environment,
we've seen it last year against Marquette and other big matchups.
They can step up to the plate.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
Yeah, and it can get very very loud in here,
which is what the Badgers are gonna be hoping for
heading into that matchup with Arizona again. That is gonna
be at eight pm, eight pm tip off on Friday night.
Plus Bo Ryan is gonna be here. He's gonna be honored.
You're gonna have members of the Final four team. I mean,
you're gonna have as much juice as possible in this

(18:39):
crowd in this arena when that game happened. So hopefully
that will help put Wisconsin over the top. But you
know they played well in this game against Appalachian State
eighty seven to fifty six. You had five guys with
a double digit scoring Tanjay and Krow leading with seventeen,
Max Klusman had fifteen, Nolan went and Xavier Amos with

(19:01):
ten points. Xavier Amos pretty solid game in twelve minutes
of action. Ten points, six rebounds, four or four from
the free throw line. You know the transfers. You know,
he's had a quiet first couple of games, but he
gets a little bit more production here in this one.

Speaker 5 (19:16):
Today, no doubt about it. And he's one that Matt
Lapey has highlighted to us through our conversations with him
that he thinks could be a big part of what
they're doing this year, and so slow burn potentially early
results nothing of note but getting in the scoring column,
making a couple of threes today. You know, Xavier Amos,

(19:38):
maybe he ends up being a big part of the
picture down the road.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
Absolutely, And as that rotation, as you still kind of
get guys in early on, perhaps a game like this
earns Amos more minutes as the year goes along. We
got fun facts with Dave coming up. We'll also hear
from coach Greg Guard his conversation with Matt and Brian
Butch after this game Wisconsin winning over Appalachian State eighty

(20:05):
seven fifty six. Fun facts are next. You're listening to
the JANK Scuredy Solutions basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 6 (20:12):
This is my.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Tanjay baseline right fro first layup done.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
Oh that was pretty going right to the left, hanging
in the air, john Tonjay Highlight Material seventy two, forty four, Wisconsin.

Speaker 4 (20:34):

John Tonjay one of the Badgers top scores today was
seventeen points. I just heard one of them there on
a fantastic layup that where he went up and under

(20:55):
to help Wisconsin expand their lead in the second half.
Hanja just a you know, really strong all around game.
He's had a couple of really good ones so far
this season. And Wisconsin wins eighty seven fifty six over
Appalachian State. So it is time for everyone's favorite segment,
fun Facts with Dave. And with a game like this, Nick,

(21:17):
the facts can be very fun as they as they
always tend to be. But Wisconsin in this in this
big win, went on that twenty four to nothing scoring run.
Now you may be asking yourself, well, well, was the
last time they went on a run like that? Well,
I have an answer for you. This twenty four to
nothing run for the Badgers was the largest run since

(21:39):
scoring the first twenty five points in their win over
Arkansas Pine Bluff back in twenty twenty, back back on
November twenty seven, twenty twenty.

Speaker 5 (21:49):
That would be quite the game to be at. I
was not at that game, that twenty five nothing before
it even starts holy cou Yeah, I don't think anyone
was allowed to be at that game. Oh that's a
good point.

Speaker 4 (21:59):
Yeah, that's a good You weren't the only one who
wasn't there.

Speaker 5 (22:03):
Arkansas Pine Bluff's eyes were spared. Their fans did not
have to witness what that was, all twenty five of
them that would have traveled here had that been allowed
to be viewed.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
Yeah, that has that has to be a very rough
start for Arkansas Pine Bluff. And yes, Wisconsin did end
up winning that game. Also, fun fact, with Wisconsin's free
throw percentage as they're thirteen to sixteen today, Wisconsin Badgers
are the best team in the NCAA and free throw

(22:34):
percentage through these three games ninety two and a half
percent in all three hundred and fifty one Division one
college basketball programs, Wisconsin Badgers number one in the country.

Speaker 5 (22:45):
Holy, that's after a couple of years ago where they
were like fourteenth in the Big Ten. Right, they were
shooting that sixty seven percent as a team. Well, that's
quite the change. Now out of the guys, a lot
of familiar faces who were part of that team a
couple of years ago that weren't great, working on their
craft and that's where you win it. If they're going
to be in a game with a team like Arizona

(23:08):
and other teams of that caliber or of their own caliber,
Wisconsin's caliber moving forward, you do need to take care
of the small things, and that's making your free throws right,
that's protecting the ball, and that's taking advantage when you
have an opportunity. And so far the season they have
done that.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
Yeah, absolutely, and holding your opponents scoreless it also does
attend well. That might help you, Yeah, it does. Wisconsin
in this game held Appalachian State scoreless for nine minutes
and forty three seconds of game action. That is the
longest stretch that they have held their opponents scoreless since
Penn State in twenty twenty two, when they held them

(23:48):
scoreless for ten minutes and twenty four seconds in the
first half there So, from seventeen to twenty six in
the first half to seven oh two they held Penn
State scoreless. Nothing. Wisconsin able to run away with winning
that one and run away with win in.

Speaker 5 (24:04):
This game else.

Speaker 4 (24:06):
That was quite the stretch that they were on.

Speaker 5 (24:08):
Yeah, I've never seen an audience get into it for
the defensive side of it like that. Like everybody was hyped.
They were cheering when people would just missshots. It was impressive.
They did what they needed to do. It gave us
something we can talk about the rest of the season.
And I'm happy to hear that this team is three
and zero at this point.

Speaker 4 (24:28):
Yeah, it was almost just kind of getting you know,
more and more remarkable as the run just kept on going.
It's like, okay, sixteen nothing, run, Wow, this was great.
Eighteen nothing, oh my god, twenty nothing, Oh my good.
It just keeps on going and an Apple Aachian state
could not get anything to go in. Wisconsin just kept
hitting the paint. Their final five shots of that run
were all layups. I mean they were able to get

(24:49):
you know, pretty easy easy looks in there. Blackwell Tanjay
Kamara McGee. It was it was quite the run to
go from being down seventeen eight to up thirty two
seventeen in a very short amount of time. So that
put Wisconsin up on top and put him on top
four good. So that had to make Greg Gard pretty happy.
We'll hear from him and his thoughts on this game

(25:11):
coming up. After this eighty seven fifty six win for
Wisconsin over Apple Atchian state.

Speaker 5 (25:17):
We'll be right back with coach Guard.

Speaker 4 (25:19):
This is the Jank Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 7 (25:28):
Mark throwing to Wilson at the top of the circle.
A couple left, Andrew's got to wag another steal. That's fourteen.
Dere's ever to the line down the way, tell.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
Them lay up.

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Cod A Cot said, hey, foul, call the active hands
for Marcus Silver making his play a time count.

Wisconsin wins eighty seven to fifty six. Marcus Silver getting
three of those points there on that steal, runaway and

(26:08):
foul and one so Mark Silver making use of his
playing time. Wisconsin getting a lot of points in the
paint today, forty eight of them, Stephen Crow leading the
way and scoring with seventeen along with john Tonjay was seventeen,
So that has to make for a pretty happy Greg
Guard after this one. Let's hear what he had to
say with Matt Lepey and Brian Butch.

Speaker 5 (26:30):
After the game, you're joining.

Speaker 7 (26:36):
Court side by head coach Greg Guard. The school record
for steals in a game is seventeen. You guys pushed
it today field fourteen and that worked defending. Butcher was
pointing this out.

Speaker 8 (26:45):
The work defensively, yeah, kind of got things kick started again,
no doubt, no doubt. It was that in WHI down
seventeen to nine or seventeen to seventeen eighty or whatever
it was.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
It was the defensive end.

Speaker 8 (26:55):
Think fifteen straight stops in a row, excuse me, And
that was the That's the maturity and the growth.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
I like.

Speaker 8 (27:03):
That excited me the most about today was just watching
us defensively start to understand and execute. I think they've
always understood, but you got to go do it and
that that turned the game. You know, those fifteen possessions
that we go from down eight to up fifteen, and
it's the tone that they set on that end, and
we have to continue to to grow defensively. I think

(27:24):
we can score, you know, we got a lot of
guys that can score, but it's the defensive end that
I'm happy with.

Speaker 2 (27:30):
The progress was made today.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
It's the last time you guys have had fifteenth straight
stops in a row. I don't know, maybe never that's right.
That to me was was the crazy thing. Oh you
so we've played a week three games, right, what if
you learned about your team?

Speaker 2 (27:47):
I think our toughness has grown.

Speaker 8 (27:49):
I think they've I think they've under come to understand
what coach guard is about.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
In those huddles.

Speaker 8 (27:55):
It's not I'm not the nice guy sometimes that they
maybe saw in the past and then and it showed.
It showed with the mentality that they have to play
with the edge. I won't say what I said in
the huddle a few times about how we have to
continue to grow our that end of the floor. But
they did it, they responded to and I think they
see it. You know, we were, we were physical, we

(28:15):
were we were into the ball and we got That's
why they have eighteen turnovers. It's nothing that we're just
solid and always in the right places, and you know
in our physicality, I think, and we were good and
better in the ball screens and the d h os.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
I think we were.

Speaker 8 (28:28):
We went to shocking more of them and hedging a
little bit, just kept tate out of the paint.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
You know, a couple of times they got the lob.

Speaker 8 (28:34):
We strung out too much east west and some of
those driggle handoffs, and it creates a pocket in behind
you the lob too. And I think once we got
that figured out and we're able to be more aggressive
on the ball, it helped keep them off out of rhythm,
and then they obviously turn it over a few times too.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
Do you guys chart deflections?

Speaker 6 (28:52):
First of all, yes, yes, yes, yes, it's it's a
number because I thought you guys were I mean, yeah,
we talked about.

Speaker 2 (28:59):
Doing the CASS.

Speaker 6 (29:00):
I said, you know, I know, man, we don't have
that number in front of us. But I mean there
was hands everywhere, and I know you talked about the lot.
But early on in that game, like the guard and
I forgot who it might have been. Max had his
hands nice and high, got the deflection. It looked like
kind of that got them off center a little bit.

Speaker 2 (29:16):
Yeah, you guys over the place.

Speaker 5 (29:17):
Yeah we were.

Speaker 2 (29:18):
We were a little scattered a little bit. We we
stuck on the first ball screen.

Speaker 8 (29:21):
John Blackwell got stuck on it and it caused rotations,
and you know, just we got more aggressive, I think,
and Nolan got his hands on some of those two
you trying to throw that over seven foot is hard.
And yeah, we turned defense into offense and we got
good things going.

Speaker 2 (29:37):
I didn't ask you before the game, but now that
it's over.

Speaker 7 (29:39):
When I first saw this game of Sunday at eleven AM,
I know they got to play too.

Speaker 8 (29:43):
Right, but I was going, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I
mean this isn't a cupcake. I mean that we know
what this program has done in terms of you know,
in the past. So yeah, I mean we we talked
about that after in Montana State about how important this
a an AM because we'll have others, you know, well
some I'm sure I haven't looked at the times of

(30:03):
league games, but I'm sure we'll have early games and
you have to be able to play no matter what
the clock says.

Speaker 6 (30:09):
If you'd like throwing that in there just a little
bit during the non conference, yeah, you know, it don't
have any choice on it.

Speaker 8 (30:13):
You know this there's a women's game this after and
so it kind of yeah, I mean, it's kind of
dictated by TV and just tell me when to show
up and I'll be here.

Speaker 7 (30:23):
Speaking of which, the next game will look ahead because
there's a lot of things going on Friday night. You
obviously have a very good Arizona team coming in, but
you know some of the final four guys are going
to get back on a bowl. Ryan, That's gonna be
a special night for those It will be it'll be Uh.

Speaker 8 (30:37):
You know, I think it's a unique opportunity to have
those guys back. Obviously you have a vast majority of
those guys played on both those teams, and then to
have coach Uh in the house that night as well,
So it'll it'll be a special night and we'll we
got our job to do in terms of coaches and
players and making sure what happens into forty minutes here
against a really really good team. All I've seen his scores.

(30:58):
I haven't started watching yet, but it looks like they're
a pretty good, pretty good outfit.

Speaker 7 (31:03):
Yeah, they've had no drama, Let's put it that way
in the first couple of days, first couple of games.

Speaker 2 (31:07):
Appreciate and enjoy this one. We'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 7 (31:09):
All right, thank you, Badgers, said coach Greg guard, joining
us court side as the Badger's defeat Appalachian State eighty
seven to fifty six.

Speaker 4 (31:16):
All right, those head coach Greg gar with Matt Leapey
and Brian Butch after an eighty seven to fifty six
win over Apple Aachian State. The toughness has grown for
this team. According to Greg Guard, that was kind of
one of the one of the big things that stuck
out to me in his comments. You know, over this
first week, we're three games in, but seeing that toughness
show up, that's that's very important for the squad.

Speaker 5 (31:39):
Yeah, definitely, and for Wisconsin on the basketball court. To
avoid being Wisconsin on the football field, you're gonna need
to take advantage of what you've grown here momentum wise.
And I say that because the Badgers defeated in succession Perdue, Rutgers,
and then Northwestern by i combined one seventeen to sixteen

(32:02):
on the football field. Then they got crushed, not necessarily crushed,
but they lost to Penn State. Then they got crushed
by Iowa. Wisconsin has built a great amount of momentum
on the basketball court here, three straight wins, commanding wins.
Let's not turn in to a tomato can on Friday.

Speaker 4 (32:20):
That is that is good advice. Let's let's not turn
into a tomato can. Yeah, it's you gotta keep that
momentum going. You have as much momentum as you can
heading into this game against Arizona. You're gonna have Bo
Ryan in the house. You're gonna have members of the
final four teams in the house. You're gonna have a
packed house. It's stripe out at the Cole Center Friday

(32:40):
night at eight.

Speaker 8 (32:41):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
That is gonna be a very exciting game.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (32:44):
And and for Wisconsin a chance for them to really
kind of put themselves really onto that under that big stage.
You know, that can be a statement win when it
comes to March. But when it just comes to the season.
You know, this early on, if you can, if you
can get a win against Arizona, make that kind of stuck.
I mean, you can put yourself into the top twenty five.
Wisconsin isn't there right now. We haven't seen the new

(33:06):
poll come out after this first week because season just
started on Monday. So we'll have another new poll on Monday,
just kind of seeing where things are. Perhaps Wisconsin will
get some votes, perhaps not. But a statement win against
Arizona I think certainly would put Wisconsin in that conversation.

Speaker 5 (33:22):
No doubt, you beat in Arizona, your top twenty ranked
team in the country four and oh. With a huge
win like that, it would put you in a good spot.
And we have seen good starts from these Wisconsin Greg
Guard led teams in recent years. I mean last year
we had a lot of fun talking about how good
they were, and then the Brewers traded Corbyn Burns and
everything got ruined.

Speaker 6 (33:41):
It.

Speaker 5 (33:41):
Yeah, happened to be the same night, but they went
to Nebraska and they lost.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
Yep, that was a rough night for me. And they
had to do it right a tip off.

Speaker 5 (33:50):
It was a strange thing.

Speaker 4 (33:51):
But anyways, So the big game is coming up on
a Friday night at eight o'clock here at the Cole
Center against Arizona. Bo Ryan will be here, The final
four teams will be here. You should be here. We're
gonna be here. Wisconsin wins today over Appalachian State eighty
seven fifty six coming up next Arizona, and we will

(34:11):
be there for you as well for that. So pregame
coverage we'll begin at seven on Friday night and then
tip off at eight and then stick around for the
j K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show. Once again, you'll
your final score tonight. Wisconsin eighty seven Appalachian State fifty six.
This has been the jan K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
Out the Clark. He'll try a three right wing, good
for j. S.

Speaker 7 (34:43):
Clark with three point two seconds to play, it'll endbout
at the Hunter. Time runs out, mister Badgers approved to
three and all.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (34:54):
They got down by nine eight minutes into the game,
went very choppy and then Wisconsin from there just went
off by twenty eight to three one to win the half.
As the Badgers get to the finish line winning by
thirty one.
