Welcome to the Badger Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Which that's off at three rights sidebook.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Yet presented by JMK Security Solutions for home theaters to
smart lighting to a universal home control. Go online to
jksecurity dot com for three and a tie background. No good, Now,
here's your host, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Aways.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Welcome into the Jay and K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick bruce Witz.
The Badgers tried to make it interesting in the end,
but fall to TCU seventy four sixty three in the
Rady Children's Invitational Championship Game. We invite you to join
the conversation with us on the hotline. Six eight three

(00:46):
two one thirteen ten is the number two call. In
a slow start for Wisconsin in both halves, followed by
furious rallies late, the Badgers couldn't quite continue the momentum
they built from yesterday's win over Providence. TCU was frankly
just too good. They shot the ball well, they forced
Wisconsin out of their comfort zone offensively, and they simply

(01:09):
had an answer for every time the Badgers tried to
make a run at him. It was sloppy from the Badgers,
which didn't help. Seventeen turnovers in this game, Nick all
that combined to just be too much to overcome for
Greg Guard's squad.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Yeah, it felt like tonight was kind of the opposite
of what we saw last night in a lot of
different ways. And although Blackwell didn't shoot particularly well from
the floor once again, eight of twenty two, that's not
a clipp you necessarily want to shoot four percentage wise,
he put up thirty points and last night he barely
crossed the double digit mark, and it was a whole
different effort from the three point range four Wisconsin tonight

(01:44):
seven of twenty eight in comparison to eight of fourteen
for the other team. TCU doesn't lend to the three
that often, and they still made more than Wisconsin did.
Tonight's battle was, as you highlighted, Wisconsin was outmatched early.
When they went on runs, they weren't substantial enough, they
weren't met with the subsequent stop on the other end

(02:04):
on occasion, and you felt like Wisconsin just never really
found what makes them special here. And it's the second
time in three games on a road trip that that
was the case. This is the first time this year
that they've played certainly back to back days. The next
opportunity to do that will come all the way in
the Big Ten Championship game. Eric, excuse me, Big Ten

(02:25):
Conference tournament. Could make it all the way to the
Big Ten Championship game in that tournament, but that would
likely be three games in three days or four games
in four days. But is the same thing for CCU.
They played on consecutive nights as well, and they showed
up tonight on like Wisconsin.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
Yeah, they did.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
They played a fantastic game TCU did, and Wisconsin, I
mean it was too little, too late when they did
make those runs coming up there in the second half.
I'm at the end of the first half. John Blackwell
kind of taken over and gets Wisconsin within four at halftime,
so he's starting to feel pretty good. Like, Okay, maybe
they've they've figured some things out, but you know, as

(03:04):
he mentioned, Nick, Wisconsin wasn't really able to get anything going,
get comfortable offensively the way they usually do, and part
of that is the heights that they have on this team. Now,
we've heard it kind of mentioned numerous times throughout the
season on the broadcast today about how the Badgers have
one of the tallest teams in the country this year,
led of course by Nolan Winter and Austin Rapp as

(03:27):
well to the big guys for Wisconsin. Nolan Winter had
three points in this game and ended up fouling out.
Austin Rapp had two points after putting up twenty yesterday,
so he was effectively shut down. All the bigs everything
inside was shut down by TCU. They were not able
to get anything going there. I mean, Winter was a
big piece yesterday. Still ends up with ten boards here tonight,

(03:51):
but fouls out just three points, all came at the
free throw line, did not make a basket rapped just
to Billy Auskis zero points, will Garlock's zero points. They
got nothing from the bigs inside and just the defense
that TCU had it forced Wisconsin completely out of rhythm.
They they looked nothing like themselves on the offensive end.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
No, they didn't. And you highlighted exactly where there was
maybe an absence of production in comparison to last night,
and that was a big man position. We often talked
about Nolan Winter so far this year, he's been a
double double machine. He held up his end of the
bargain with the rebounds, but offensively effectively nothing. And it
wasn't even for the lack of scoring output in general,

(04:34):
as the lack of shot attempts. I mean he had
three total shot attempts, which suggests that TCU made him
extremely uncomfortable tonight, never really gave him any space, and
credit to them for that, but Wisconsin needs to do
a better job moving forward to ensure that their front
court has every opportunity to get shots up. Austin Rapp
played twenty two minutes to night down the stretch, he

(04:54):
wasn't in the game. They lent to a smaller line
of Brayden Carrington off the bench instead. Nolan Winter, as
you highlighted, fooled out. This was a game where you
felt absolutely no consistency from the front court. John Blackwell
shouldn't have to take twenty two shots. I like it
when he does because that typically means he scores a
lot of points. But when you have a combination of

(05:15):
thirty five shots between your starting guards, unless you're having
a hell of a night, that's not an ideal formula
for success. And as much as Blackwell put up, as
I've already highlighted, did not make enough of those shots
to really take the top off this defense and find
a way to make them uncomfortable. I'll give credit where
credit to Wiscoont's a punch back. I mean, it felt

(05:37):
like they were dead in the water, and then they
would get it within ten, and then that would get
just under ten nine points, seven points I think at
one point down the stretch. But at no point did
you feel like Wisconsin was in the driver's seat.

Speaker 5 (05:51):
No.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
No, they were out of it certainly early on, but yeah,
making a couple of runs late. I mean they got
it to within seven. It was seventy sixty three there
towards the end. I mean, Rody had a great steal
off an inbounds put it in for two, and it's like, okay,
maybe some momentum here late, maybe they can make it
a bit more interesting.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
And then you give up a dunk on.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
The other end, then you got a foul, then you
got free throws, and you know, from there, Wisconsin missed
a lot of their shots too. Wisconsin finished the game
one of their last eleven from the field. You can't
win games like that. I mean, when you're battling back,
when you're trying to get back into it, and erase
a deficit. You can't go one of eleven from the field.

(06:31):
You need some hot shooting, and they just simply weren't
able to get it in this game. And yeah, you
mentioned the thirty five shots from Blackwell and Boyd. Yeah,
maybe a few too many unless they're going incredibly well.
But also Nolan Winter and Austin Rapp. Just nine combined
shots from your two bigs in the starting lineup and
they made just one of them from the field. Just

(06:52):
you can't have it. It was just simply not good
enough on the offensive end. We know this team can score,
we know they can put up points. We just saw
them put up one hundre four yesterday. Yeah, but just
sixty three today. Just a tale of two different games,
a tale of two different stories here for Wisconsin. But
now they just got You gotta look at the tape, Nick,
and you got to get yourself ready for a big

(07:14):
ten play because that's what's coming up next.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
And you look at today's game, and I wonder how
often the Badgers have ever had a situation where they
went from one hundred and four to sixty three, right,
a forty one point drop in production from one game
to the next. It probably doesn't happen often. I mean,
it's a really consistent program and it'll average out about
eighty points per game, which is essentially where they've been
for the last two years now. But these have been

(07:40):
three drastically different games in a row. I mean, BYU,
the talent for them on their side stepped up huge.
John Blackwell played poorly. Wisconsin never really had a crack
at him. It felt like yesterday it was dominance from
the get go, specifically Austin Rapp I think is the

(08:00):
X factor in the first half. Pay Don't get me wrong,
Boyd with thirty six points. Was the difference, his tenacity,
his ability to really make the most of the turnovers
on the other side and put them in the bucket
on the opposite end. For Wisconsin, tonight they didn't have
any of that. They had twelve fast rake points and
yesterday I think they had thirty plus. So you just

(08:20):
need to find some level of consistency on both ends
of the floor. TCU's defense gave Wisconsin fits. I mean
it was the entire game. It was tough look after
tough look. Providence didn't do anything. I mean, Wisconsin a
good look after good look so you gotta mix those
two games together. I'm sure they'll have a better opportunity
to break down the tape of Providence as well. Moving forward.

(08:43):
I don't know how much you can do overnight in
a hotel, probably in a banquet hall where they looked
at the film from last night for today's game. But
they're gonna have an opportunity now to move forward Big
ten schedules. What matters most last two years, they've had
great performances in these holiday tournaments. One these holiday tournaments
and not necessarily reach their ultimate destination second weekend. Is

(09:05):
that bar I think they're looking to clear in the
national tournament come March. Maybe this year is different. Maybe
losing this tournament is that change of tide. Maybe I
can lean into superstition for a moment and say, now
that they lost this the butterfly effect, the domino effect
here moving forward could be something different. But the end
of the day, I'm looking forward to getting Big ten

(09:25):
action going knowing the opponent's a little bit better. I
think that that's where you really see the coaching difference,
because they know each other so well that Greg Gard
can kind of flex his muscles and get some WS going.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yeah, absolutely, as they're finally going to return to the
Coal Center. It's gonna have been a couple of weeks,
but they will return to the Coal Center to face
Northwestern on December third, So that's going to be coming
up on Wednesday next week here. So yeah, they got
a little bit time to get back from being out
west and go over the tape. And I'm sure there's

(09:56):
plenty of stuff that they can learn from this because
TCU frankly did expose a weakness here for Wisconsin. Offensively,
they exposed how Wisconsin can be beat, how their offense
can be shut down. And there's gonna be a lot
of other teams around the Big Ten who are looking
at this game, seeing what TCU did and recognizing, Okay,
this is how we can beat this Wisconsin squad. So

(10:18):
it's gonna be very important for Greg Gard to take
his guys into that film room understand how they got
beaten and what they can do to mitigate it, what
they can do to change it, to ensure that something
like that doesn't happen again, that they have answers to
the challenges posed by TCU here tonight, because frankly, losing
is not all that fun. It really isn't, but we

(10:40):
do like to have fun on this program and we
like to have our fun facts, and fun facts are
gonna be coming up on the other side here. Also
later on in the show, we're gonna be joined by
Nick Osen of twenty four to seven Sports, as we
do after every single game, we're gonna get his thoughts
on this loss as well. That's all coming up, and
we got a loaded show for you here tonight though.

(11:00):
Final score here at TCU seventy four Wisconsin sixty three.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
Keep it right here.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
This is the JANK Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
At Badger's with plenty of time to get a look.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Here, Bill Blackwell triples it across mid court down to
three black Welcome back to the jan K Security Solutions
Basketball postgame Show. Jay and K Security Solutions from home

(11:38):
theaters to smart lighting to a universal home control goes
online to jksecurity dot Com. Dave Gasper here with you
along with Nick bruce Witz. As the Badgers fall in
the Rady Children's Invitational Championship Game to the TCU Horned
Frog seventy four sixty three. John Blackwell led the way
for the Badgers with thirty points. Nick Boyd added fifteen

(12:02):
as well. They were the big threats for Wisconsin here tonight,
not much doing from the rest of the starting lineup.
Andrew Roady added seven, Nolan Winter had three, Austin Rapp
with two points as the big men were essentially shut
down by tc used defense here tonight and Nick TCU.
I mean they had a ton of threats to score.

(12:23):
I mean we saw Edmunds, we saw David Punch, we
saw Harding. All these guys were really able to just
do a number on the Badgers and get themselves, you know,
really anywhere they wanted to on the court.

Speaker 6 (12:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
I think TCU lost in New Orleans earlier this year,
so that's an ugly loss for them. Outside of that,
had they won tonight, after winning yesterday as they did,
they'd probably be ranked come next week. This is a
really good team. I mean, people will look at them
see that they're unranked in that essentially their outmatch by
the Badgers, knowing the pedigree of what Wisconsin has. But

(12:58):
I think tc is a real problem. I know we're
going to talk with Nick Osin in a matter of moments.
He follows their coaching staff a little bit closer and
than we do. I just think that, you know, he
has a propensity to follow specific programs, and TCU appears
to be one of those. So we'll touch base on that.
But Harding and Iowa native or Iowa transfer. I couldn't
speak to where he's from necessarily, but he was at

(13:19):
Iowa this past season, a guy that I don't quite remember,
making a huge impact for them. So that's a great
addition for TCU to have a difference maker like him
added here before this year. It's a team that Wisconsin
clearly was not ready for, and it's a credit to
them and also a knock on the Badgers. You need
to be prepared, you need to be ready to go,
You need to play your opponent, you need to be

(13:40):
able to figure them out quickly, and it took him
a while to do so. John Blackwell tried to play
hero ball the whole night. I think that that was
trying to compensate for yesterday's performance. I don't think you
can allow for that, but I don't know if they
had anything better to do tonight. So looking forward, looking
ahead to what's next for Wisconsin Big Ten schedule, there's
some real juggernaut, some really good teams. It appears in

(14:01):
the Big Ten so far this year. Michigan Michigan State
are two that stick out to me. Those are gonna
be some pretty damn good teams. So you got to
gear up, you gotta get ready to go, and you
gotta be able to play with the big boys. Badgers
proved this weekend. Then maybe they're not quite there yet,
but Providence, that was a hell of a victory. I
was trying to have more games like that moving forward.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Yeah, exactly, And we will see as things move along
in Big Ten play. But you're not gonna be where
you want to be quite yet. It is still November.
There's still a long way to go in this season,
and you really want to be there as you get
into March, when you get in conference tournament time, n
Cuba tournament time, that's when you want to be there.
You don't want to you don't want to hit your

(14:39):
peak quite yet. And Brian Butch, I think has talked
about it. You know, he talked about in the postgame
show and during the game. This team isn't quite at
their best yet. There's still a lot more to go
until they reach their peak. Until until they reach that
so still plenty of time. Now is the time to learn,
and they certainly got quite the lesson here tonight against TCU,
which you know, sometimes those lessons aren't all that fun

(15:02):
to learn when you're going through them, but they are
important and even though they may not be fun, they
do still lead to some fun facts. As it's time
for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
Hey, have you ever heard me? Here's the term fun fact.
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fight. You have a fun fact.

Speaker 6 (15:20):
I do.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
First time in history this has happened at eight games,
five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists. Been a
long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 7 (15:31):
The fun out here, This game's fun.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
Okay, love that fact is fun?

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Yeah? Are you fired up?

Speaker 5 (15:36):
I'm fired up for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
Alright, a couple of fun facts here as the Badger's
falls seventy four sixty three to TCU, which is not
quite so so fun. This is the first time that
the Badgers have lost a holiday tournament here in three years.
It's been It's been quite a bit for him looking back.
Last time was twenty twenty two, the Battle for Atlantis,

(16:06):
they lost there. They ended up taking third place, and
so they lost the semi final but won the third
place consolation game in the Battle for Atlantis. But last
couple of years, I mean, they had won five straits
or actually make it six straight holiday tournament games, and
they'd won three of their last four, making now three
of their last five holiday tournaments going back to the

(16:28):
Maui Invitational in twenty twenty one.

Speaker 4 (16:31):
Yeah, this is an impressive group knowing what they're doing
in the postseason, or excuse me, in these holiday tournaments, right,
Greg Gardon clearly has a recipe year and finding a
way to be competitive in these is better than not.
But I think a lot of people would trade it
for more postseason success for sure.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
And the Badger's also won three of four holiday tournaments
from twenty eleven to twenty fourteen, and then they didn't
win any of those for about five years until that
maw invitation in twenty twenty one. But the year that
they broke that streak and lost that holiday tournament twenty fifteen, Nick,

(17:09):
any ideas of what might have happened the Badger's team
of twenty fifteen.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
You know, I was leaning into superstition earlier. How about
that make the national championship this year, Badgers. It only makes.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
Goes here we go.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
See now, that's trying to make some fun out of
these fun facts here on fun facts with Dave also
keeping an update on the chase for one thousand. Andrew
Roady with seven points tonight, is now just two points
shy of a thousand in his college career.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
He's so close. That's great.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
There, he tiped it out perfectly. He'll do it in
front of the home fans on Wednesday night.

Speaker 5 (17:43):
There we go looking forward to that.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
See more positivity, that's what we're all about here. And
another guy who's probably also going to do it on
Wednesday night, John Blackwell, with his thirty points tonight, he
is now just twelve points shot of a thousand in
his career. I mean, he was pretty far behind Rody
when we started this little countdown, and now Blackwell is
almost entirely caught up to him. Uh so, Blackwell, I

(18:06):
wouldn't be surprised if he got a thousand points also
on Wednesday nights.

Speaker 4 (18:10):
Yeah, so, I hope you enjoy your night.

Speaker 5 (18:12):
Roady.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
You're probably not gonna get one. It's gonna be a
dual celebration of you. Yeah, if Blackwell beats him to it,
that'll be a little awkward.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Yeah, that will be because all he needs is one
bucket and he's there. I mean black follow me a
couple Yeah, exactly, You're you're almost there.

Speaker 5 (18:28):
Andrew Roady, what if.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
He gets on a goaltend, it's like not even a
real bucket.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
Just said that'd be hilarious.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
Oh they give me that ball?

Speaker 5 (18:35):
Yeah, I need to save it.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
And last fun fact here, John Blackwell, with his thirty
points tonight, is now tied for these six most thirty
point games in Badger's history. He is, He now has
four in his career and uh, he is now tied
with Claude Gregory who played from nineteen seventy eight to

(18:59):
eighty one, and Ethan Happ Wow.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
Yeah, got that bridge guy right between, you know, two
pretty strong eras of men's basketball at Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Yeah, after Kaminski and where we are now, yeah, Ethan
Halfcaan after that. So yeah, now four thirty point games
in history. And actually the next player that he's chasing
for thirty point games, John Tanjay. Really Yeah, with his
one season he had six thirty plus point games. John

(19:31):
Blackwell now with four, so he's got two more to
chase him for assault to tie for fifth and the
leader all time in thirty point games and Badger's history.

Speaker 5 (19:42):
Everyone together, now, Michael.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
Finley exactly, thank you, Casey James, as he knows. Yeah,
Michael Finley with nine. He's got the numbers. He's got
the number in the rafters. So no real surprise there,
but still a fun fact, nonetheless a fact. What's also
a fun fact is that Nick Osen is going to
be joining us on the other side of this break
as we're going to hear from him as the Badger's

(20:07):
fall seventy four to sixty three in the Rady Children's Invitational.
Nick Osen from twenty four to seven sports, we'll get
his reaction on the other side. This is the Jane
K Scurity Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 6 (20:36):
Hires right lane, low block right Robinson dishot to punch
big man Nolan Winter turns him away in.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
A block shot.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
What a block shot, Michael, What a recovery Badger.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Block Welcome back to the jan K Security Solutions Basketball

Security Solutions has you covered?

Speaker 5 (20:58):

Speaker 3 (21:01):
For more info and for more info on this Badgers team,
we go to our guy Nick Osen from twenty four
to seven Sports, as he joins us here now, I'm
Jane Ksecurty Solutions Basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
Nick.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
Far different mood after from yesterday's game to today. A
big scoring output from John blackwell today we didn't see
that yesterday, but the rest of the offense was not
really able to put it together. What was the main
difference you saw, Nick, between yesterday's game and today with
this Badgers team.

Speaker 7 (21:35):
Yeah, guys, that's really a little bit different.

Speaker 5 (21:37):
You know.

Speaker 7 (21:37):
I was frankly a little bit surprised that the Badgers
were favored about the same amount that they were over
Providence yesterday. And I felt like from the jump, guys,
quite honestly, TCU's ball pressure and kind of playing through
the paint, I think really set the tone, you know,
as we were even it's still early in the season,
but very very early, and you guys asked, you know, man,

(22:01):
kind of the potential here and there, I thought that
rim protection would have to grow. I think you certainly
saw that today really on Friday, and then just the aggressiveness,
right it's kind of been hit or miss a little
bit the last couple of games, and that's something that
if this team wants to do what they're capable of,
that needs to be a thirty five to forty minute
type of characteristic, maybe not just fifteen or twenty like

(22:25):
we saw late in the second half.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
Nick, It's not necessarily going to be a huge part
of their game plan in what they're looking to accomplish,
but I have to imagine they got to find more
ways to get No. One down in the paint with
his back to the bucket. They didn't get enough shot
attempts from the paint from their big men to I
didn't get enough shot attempts in general. They got nine
total shots between Rap and Winter, Winter in particular zero
for three from the field. If they're going to be

(22:49):
the team that they need to be to win more
games down the stretch and make it deeper into March,
Winter's got to have more touches that are maybe more organic.

Speaker 7 (22:58):
Nick, without a doubt, you know, I was watching and
then I was like, Okay, I'm not seeing exactly what
I was kind of hoping too from these opportunities from Winter,
and then I look at the box score and kind
of the shot attempts here exactly right, And I don't
think you can put all of that on him. Kind
of like you alluded to, some of it needs to
be more organic. I think some plays need to be
set in. And frankly, I commend him a little bit

(23:20):
because I thought his defensive energy, even if they weren't
getting the stops in the first half, like I thought,
there was a lot of effort intensity. He's trying to
be physical, you know, He's just not always going to
be as big as some of the other guys on
other teams. And frankly, guys, I thought that TCUs posts
were really quite good. I thought that punch was phenomenal.

(23:42):
And then brock Harding obviously he's a guard, but he
would take it down to the hole a couple of
times and just kind of hit energy. We're all familiar
with it from his time with Iowa. I thought that
the horn Frogs just played a little bit more of
a consistent game tonight.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
Yeah, they certainly did, and they forced Wisconsin out of
their you know, regular consistent game. But you know, Nick,
we're talking with Nick Osen here of twenty four to
seven Sports and we talked yesterday about how Nick Boyd
and how fantastic he was with thirty six points. You know,
today at TCU really kind of seemed to key on

(24:19):
Boyd a little bit more, trying it, trying to shut
him down, making him kind of that focal point there
of their defense as well.

Speaker 7 (24:28):
Yeah, Dave, you're exactly right, and that kind of hit
on you know what I said from the outset, like
Jamie Dixon's teams, when you go back to Pittsburgh, you
know they're they're known for playing hard and playing through
the paint. But that ball pressure and specifically focusing in
on Wisconsin's we'll say superstar from yesterday and obviously one
of the best players. I'm not sure that the Badgers

(24:49):
expected that to that degree. Now a positive note is JB.
You know John Blackwell, he was phenomenal. He had an
All American like performance in the first half. I thought
he was in the second half. I think then they
made things tougher on him too. But Dave, I think
to build off your point, but also I know you
like when I kind of bring some of this aspect
just going forward, you need more from the post, like

(25:12):
Bruce said, but also just more consistency from some of
the guard depths. I'm not sure about you, guys, but
I think I'm ready to see really more opportunities for
a guy like Braydon Carrington that seems to just be
answering the bell every single time on both ends. I
know that guard has liked what he's seen. I think
that he's shown maybe it should be a little bit

(25:34):
more like twenty twenty five ish minutes.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
I wholeheartedly agree.

Speaker 4 (25:38):
I think that this is one of those guys that
you lean into because when he's out there, he's productive.
I mean his three point stroke. If you can get
more shots that aren't necessarily forced from him, right, he
finishes the game off a couple of games back BYU
with a couple of late threes that he sent up
because it was kind of garbage time and he knocked
him down. And today he was pretty substantial in what

(25:59):
was an almost successful comeback content late in the second half,
got as close as seven. What is Andrew Roadie like?
I think that we just really haven't seen enough from
him to say, certainly he's not a high output offensive asset.
It's just not his role on this team. But where
can he be better because at this point I've been

(26:20):
a little underwhelmed because it doesn't feel like he does
a lot of things. Great, he does a lot of things.

Speaker 7 (26:25):
Well, yeah, Nick, you know, I think that if you're
watching closely on the defensive end, I do think that's
where he really hangs his hat. And I know, you know,
from speaking with staff at the pressers and then obviously
just kind of throughout the program, they really like what
he brings on that end. So I do want to give.

Speaker 4 (26:45):
Him right, Well, that's harder to quantify right by by
looking at an end of game box score if he
doesn't have steels or blocks right to be fair to.

Speaker 7 (26:52):
Him, Yep, Yeah, absolutely, Nick, And you know, I do
want to say I get where you're coming from, you know,
offensively with some of the numbers that he is that
glue guy. You know, he'll look to pass maybe not
gonna hear his name is often. But I'll also note,
and I think there were some tweets that you know,
got out there of kind of some screen grabs in
the second half. It did feel like a couple of times,

(27:14):
whether it was whether it was Rody or Carrington or
rap you know, at times there were open three point
shooters out there around the perimeter in the second half. Now,
I don't think it's really the fault of anyone. You're
trying to drive, you're the leading scores, you're trying to
get more opportunities. But I'll say I think you're just
looking for a little bit more gelling from this unit.

Speaker 1 (27:35):
Again.

Speaker 7 (27:36):
Fortunately, it's really early season. They looked amazing Thursday, and
this isn't a bad loss, like TCU is looking like
a tournament team. But now it's getting to the point
in the non time where hey, you need to take
care of Marquette, you need to be Villanova and get
off to a solid start in the Big ten guys.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
Yeah, and they will have the Big ten start coming
up next. And that is when we're going to talk
with you next year on the postgame show.

Speaker 5 (28:02):
Nick.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
As always, we appreciate your contributions and enjoy some leftover
turkey mashed potatoes.

Speaker 5 (28:08):
All right, thank you so.

Speaker 7 (28:10):
Much, guys. I appreciate you. Talk to you real soon.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
All right, there it goes Nick Osin of twenty four
to seven Sports joining us here on the postgame show,
and we'll be back on the other side. We'll hear
from Greg Guard his comments after this Badger's loss seventy
four to sixty three to TCU and the Rady Children's
Invitational that's coming up on the other side. This is
the Jane Kse Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 6 (28:42):
Carrington corner pocket three off the front, Rim Robinson, the rebound,
Rody strips it, plays it in Andrew Rody with a
deuce for the Badgers, and the lead cut to.

Speaker 3 (28:51):

(29:11):
Children's Invitational out in San Diego, California. A tough one
for the Badgers. They fell behind early, they made a
run late at the end of the first half, then
they fell behind big once again to start the second half.
Then they made another run late in the second half,
but weren't quite able to get there. And that's a
disappointing end for Greg Guard's team out there in San

(29:32):
Diego and Greg Guard met up with Chris Fosters and
Brian Butch after the game.

Speaker 6 (29:38):
Brian Butch and Chris Foster's on the Wisconsin four Dealers
postgame show, and we're happy to be joined by Wisconsin
head coach Greg Guard coach. Seventy four to sixty three
the final score for TCU today. However, the Badgers came
back really twice in that game, late in the first
half and late in the second half. Were there any
silver linings that you point to despite the outcome here today?

Speaker 8 (30:00):
Well, I think you always, as I told the team,
life is always full of you get what you deserve,
and we did not deserve to win the game. So yeah,
it was great that we fought back, but it was
a lot of our undoings and uh lack of assertiveness
and aggressiveness, specifically early defensively, we did not set the tone.

(30:21):
We let TCU get into whatever they wanted, get comfortable
we had. We were jogging back at times in transition,
we had mismatches and not guarding the right guy. So
just from that standpoint, as much as we took a
step forward yesterday, I thought we took a step back today.
And you know, we got we got a lot of
things to get better at. But I'd like to have

(30:41):
a lot of things to get better at November and
not play well because we've got we've got a lot
of coming starting next week.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
You talk about defensively, that would be my first question
your coach. Just it looked like there was a lot
of switching and then at times lack of communication. At
times there two would go to one right and you
could see TCU getting that energy, you know, getting comfortable offensively.
Is that kind of what you're talking about as far
as defensively, just because you just haven't seen it a
whole lot.

Speaker 8 (31:06):
No, And we had miscommunications on some of those ghost
ball screens and slideouts, and you know too going with
the ball or nobody going with the ball. You know,
we just like I said, we we didn't put them
on their heels from the beginning. They they came at us,
and and I didn't like our you know, our ability
or inability to establish the paint, specifically defensively. I thought

(31:26):
they whenever they wanted they got something in the paint.
They were able to keep possessions alive and offensive rebounds.
And obviously the the obvious one is the turnovers. You know,
way too way too many turnovers. You know, so that's
those things. We'll look through the film and and pick
that apart. But I just the physicality and the aggressiveness
really on the defensive end of the floor is what

(31:49):
I was most disappointed with.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
Yeah, they out scored thirty six twenty four points in
the paint you talked about early on the first two
buckets TC you had with a lot of dunks right
and finishes. You know, offensively, they did a really good
job blitz that ball screen or doubling that ball screen,
which you know bet your guards had to pull it
back out. Only ten assists though, are of that is
with that blitz that's what they're trying to do, and
it you guys kind of fell into that. Yeah, we did.

Speaker 8 (32:11):
We fell into over dribbling.

Speaker 5 (32:13):
We didn't.

Speaker 8 (32:13):
We didn't change and we didn't we didn't put pressure
on the rim with our screeners.

Speaker 5 (32:16):
We didn't roll.

Speaker 8 (32:18):
You know, we were dancing out of the ball screens.
I didn't think we were aggressive enough coming out of
them and dive into.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
The rim on it.

Speaker 8 (32:24):
We put No, we had we had didn't have a
ball screen roll buck at all game. So you know,
so that's that's obviously a credit to TCU with what
they what they were doing defensively, but you have to
put when a team is that aggressive on the ball,
you have to put pressure on the rim, and we
did not put enough pressure on the rim consistently.

Speaker 6 (32:43):
John Blackwell with thirty points, a game high thirty points,
his second thirty point game of the season and the
first two games of this road trip hit His shot
just wasn't quite dropping in, either.

Speaker 5 (32:54):
From the floor or at the free throw line.

Speaker 6 (32:57):
How nice was it to see him get things going
again and knock down some shots, especially early.

Speaker 8 (33:02):
Yeah, I mean, he's a he's a talented player. But
you know, I'd rather have him have three and we
win than him have thirty. I mean, obviously he's he's
a talent player, and he was aggressive. He was one
of our guys that was was aggressive and tried to
turn some of that that aggressiveness from TCU against him.
And obviously attacking the paint and getting the free throw

(33:23):
line was important.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
Yeah, I think the biggest thing, you know, coaches, as
you talk about it, there's a lot of things you
don't want to be your best basketball team right now.
Right there's some great teaching points that they can take
away and you got big ten play coming up. Obviously
you got you know, a Northwestern team Marquette in the Nebraska,
but the two big tim we know how tough this
league is, right and he can't drop one earlier that
you're not ready for. So there's a lot of great learning,
teaching and learning and teaching points available in this game.

(33:48):
And you talked about a lot of those things. I
think biggest thing is you've got to get a little
bit more from Nolan and from your bigs. They got
to put some pressure, they got to be assertive, and
you talked about the role in just some of those
options as well.

Speaker 6 (34:00):
So sorry, coach, we appreciate your time, especially doing this
a great road trip either way, not the result that
we hope for today, but say travels back home. We'll
catch up with you back in Madison.

Speaker 5 (34:09):
All right, thanks guys, Thanks.

Speaker 6 (34:10):
Coach Badger head coach Greg Guard gracious to join us
here on the Badger postgame show.

Speaker 5 (34:16):
Our thanks to coach Guard.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
All right, all right, there it is Greg Guard with
Chris Vosster's and Brian Butcher after this one, and yeah,
Greg Guard to exactly right, Nick. They did not establish
the paint very well at all, they were not able
to get things going offensively, and you got to give
credit to TCU. Tc you just played a phenomenal ballgame.
They did everything right that they They gave the Badgers

(34:39):
a really tough run here.

Speaker 4 (34:41):
Yeah, they played the game that they needed to. I mean,
they beat Florida yesterday, the defending national champions and really
good squad, a top ten ranked team in the country.
So they deserve every chance they get to get credit.
I mean credit where credits do I mean, TCU might
be a hell of a team. We might look back
at this and say, yeah, Wisconsin played and lost to

(35:04):
one hell of a program. I think we get caught
up in the number in front of the name, and
they didn't have one entering tonight's matchup. But it'll be
interesting to see if they do next week, and if not,
I think they'll be on the precipice in the weeks
to come. But Wisconsin needs to play better. Last night
they played incredibly well. It's hard to go and do
what they did last night and repeat it the next day.
But they got to do a better job playing a

(35:25):
little bit more consistent basketball. Now they're playing the real teams.
I get it that the SIU e's are fun ball
state NIU, but they're now starting to play some real,
real programs and directional programs no longer on the schedule,
so we'll see what they do moving forward.

Speaker 3 (35:43):
Well, sort of, Northwestern is next. They are sort of
they're kind of a directional school, but they are up
next for Wisconsin next on Wednesday at the Coal Center,
and that is going to be an eight pm tip off,
so it's gonna be a late night, but we're gonna
be here with you on the jan Case Curty Solutions
Basketball Postgame Show as Big Ten play does get started

(36:05):
next week, it'll be Northwestern, then after that Marquette at
the Coal Center. So that's gonna be a fun couple
of games next week and we'll find out a lot
more about this Badgers squad once again. Your final score tonight,
TCU seventy four, Wisconsin sixty three. Tough loss for the Badgers.
For our producer, Casey James, for Nick Bruswitz, I am

(36:27):
Dave Gasper, thank you for listening. We will see you
again Wednesday nights when the Badgers take on Northwestern. This
has been the jan K Security Solutions Basketball Postgame Show.

Speaker 6 (36:38):
And TCU is going to win the Rady Children's Invitational.
We have two huge wins over number ten Florida and
the Wisconsin Badgers, who's two year winning streak of holiday
tournament victories will come to a close in the championship
game of the Rady Children's Invitational. Final score now TCU
seventy four and wiscont In sixty three.

Speaker 7 (37:05):
Mm hmm
