From Florida. It's Game two of the D'aytona Beach Classic.
As the six and two Wisconsin Badger's coming off a
hard fought loss less than twenty four hours ago to
the thirteenth ranked team in the country, they take on
a five and three but very impressive James Madison University
Duke's team. Good afternoon to Welcome to our broadcast on
ten seventy the game in Madison, Fox Sports nine to
twenty in Milwaukee and on your free iHeartRadio app along

with our producer Casey James Reid Magnum filling in for
John Audius. All Right, for Wisconsin, it is a quick
turnaround and this James Madison team they are playing their
fifth major program in Wisconsin. They've faced four already this
year and they've won two out of those four, so
they're a mid major. But don't kid yourself, this is
a very good group. We'll talk about them more coming up.

During our pre game, we'll get a scout of James
Madison with associate head coach Chris Bracy. We'll look at
the Badger notebook and take a spin around the Big Ten.
But first we'll visit with the head coach of the Badgers,
Robin Pinchton. This is Wisconsin Basketball from lear Field back
in Daytona Beach, Wisconsin and James Madison today for Game two.

We're talking with the head coach of the Badgers, Robin Pinchton. Coach,
I want to ask you about during film yesterday, you
were asking your players do you want more or do
we need to stop? Are you saturated for tomorrow and
practice or do you want to sleep more? Why is
it important for you to involve your players in these decisions?

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah? I think a lot of times as coaches, you know,
we want to check a by and you know, put
so much pressure on her players to you know, be
able to adapt and understand. And this is a short turnaround,
and so really trying to empower them to make decisions,
to take ownership. They know their bodies, the mental prep
that goes into playing, the physicality, the sleeping in a hotel,

(02:19):
you know, it's just a lot, and so really just
trying to build that trust with them that they have
a voice and we're going to respect it.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Talk about building trust your true freshman Nikki Kirsten, there
have been moments throughout the season you put her in
big spots and if she makes a mistake, you leave
her in there because you know how much you want
to build off of her. Talk about that dynamic with
your freshman point guard.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
You know, I just think, you know, for all of them,
you know, no one's out there trying to make mistakes right,
and you know, if we go a couple of possessions
in a row, we might need to, you know, pull
them out and just settle them down. But I also
think that it's important that they're not always looking over
at the bench, that they can play free, that they
can make adjustments and make better decisions. You know, I

think for Nikki, she's a young lady that you know,
we're an injury away of her meeting minutes and in
US needing her and so anytime we get an opportunity
to just continue to get our feet wet. You know,
that's a big stage for a freshman against Ole Miss,
a really good team. But yeah, I think those minutes
add up over the course of the season.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Again, this is the head coach, Robin Pinchton. Finally, coach,
you had a great line last night to your players.
You said, the game doesn't care if you're tired. What
has today come down to?

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah, you know, it's a really good JMU team. You know,
win or lose, we said, we're zero zero. It's a
new day, a new opportunity to move the needle for
our program. I think the mind is so powerful, and
you know, our players understanding that the game really doesn't care.
You know, this is a pretty short turnaround for us.
I don't know if I've ever been in a tournament
where you have less than twenty four hours, but that's

the way it was formatting, and so we've got to
be able to embrace it.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
We've got to own it.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
We have to have mental toughness and so just a
discipline to come out, you know, and play through fatigue,
stay sharp, stay alert, play really gritty on the defensive end,
and obviously we got to do a much better job
taking care.

Beach Game two. Visiting with associate head coach Chris Braci.
Let's get a scouts of the Duke's coach. Just one

(04:30):
of those mid major programs where I mean, they're right
maybe the best it is. Talking to coach Johnson, he said, yeah,
they could be the best mid major team. And as
you study this group, what is it about their program
that's so successful.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
There's a lot of things. Actually, usually when we're playing
an opponent, we usually like to put three strengths three
weaknesses on the scout. I I got five for JMU
in terms of strengths, one of them being transition attacked.
They like to play fast. They have multiple pushers that
could bring the ball up the floor with the challenging guard.

(05:02):
Their half court defense, Okay, they're really aggressive.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
In the passing lanes. It can turn you over and
speed you up.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Their strength to schedule, they've already played uh four high
four high majors.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
They've beaten two.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
And their offensive rebounding they're they're really good at They're
just they got a lot of a lot of strengths
and they got experienced. They got McDaniel, who I believe
this is their six year at JMU, and so there's
a lot of cohesion there with players and coaching staff.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
It was fun watching you last night with the scout
and how much you wanted to put on your players
given fewer than twenty four hours for the turnaround. Give
our listeners a little in say, how you manage a
scout when you've got a team that does so many
things well, but you don't want to overload your players
coming off a really tough game yesterday.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Yeah, I'm a firm believer that you want to keep
things as simple as possible. Sometimes as coaches, you know,
we like to throw a lot of information on paper,
and what happens is sometimes you'll lose main focuses in
areas that we really need to take care of. So
it was my goal to try to try to make
it as short and simple as possible for our girls

and focus us on a few little things that we
can do to help try to help us play the
best basketball that we can play.

Let's take a very quick look at the Badger notebook.
Destiny Howell fifty one percent from the field for the Badger.

She had four threes yesterday, a season high. As she
is shooting forty six from downtown. Look for her to
continue that today. And on the other side, Kira Daniels,
second leading scorer. She was zero for six from deep yesterday.
Look for her to get back on track. This is
the first ever meeting between these two programs, Wisconsin and
James Madison. Kind of hard to believe what the history
both have. But another note, eleven Wisconsin players are averaging

double digits in minutes played per game and with a
quick turnaround, as you heard coach pinched and say, expect
the Badgers to go to their bench early and often.

starters are getting announced. Let's take a look at these
six and two Wisconsin Badgers under head coach Robin Pinchton.
Thirty first season five ninety one and three seventy seven
or overall record, and her starters look like this. A
six foot graduate guard from Queens, New York number one,
Destiny Howell, another player who hails from Queens, New York
five seven red shirt junior guard number three Breonna Ware.

Then you've got Dora Zaya, six to three freshman center
from Croatia making her third start of the year, number
six five two senior guard from Saint Paul, Minnesota, thirteen
or Ronnie Porter, and a six foot junior guard from
Highlands Ranch, Colorado number twenty cur At Daniels. James Madison
five and three under Sean o'reagan. Tenth season for him
at James Madison two fifteen and eighty four his record.

His starters are a six four redshirt senior guard from Birdsborough, Pennsylvania,
number zero, Peyton McDaniel. She is the preseason Sun Belt
Conference Player of the Year. Six to two graduate student
from forward from Norfolk, Virginia, number five, Ashaunty Barnes five
eight junior guard from Ontario, number eleven Brie Robinson, very
good defensive player. Five for junior guard from Virginia Beach, Virginia,

twenty one on her jersey, Zekaia Stevenson, and then a
six to two freshman forward from Harleysville, Pennsylvania, number twenty two,
Grace McDonough scottson the home team today. They were the
road team yesterday. So different jerseys. White jerseys and shorts
with the red numerals and the piping. And James Madison
the dark black with dark purple uniforms, but the white
numerals on the front and on the back, which we appreciate.

The black jerseys with the bright white. If you're calling
the game, we're court side here, got a great spot
for it. Wisconsin and James Madison the Badgers hound tough
yesterday against thirteenth ranked Old Miss, down by two with
under three to go, made a big run in the fourth.
Old Miss made their free throws. Though. We'll see what
Wisconsin can do here today. James Madison, yesterday, it was

an adventure of a game. McDaniel's pops of three right
in front of us, right side, and she knocks that
one down. James Madison scores on their first possession thirteen
seconds in. Wisconsin will go for their first chance. James
Madison started the game yesterday against Boston College. Down nineteen
to nothing, they won the game seventy three two fifty
three shot there by. Daniels and the Badgers answer with

a two just inside the three point arc and Wisconsin
now down three to two thirty seconds in forty point
swing and talking with the James Madison staff, they think
it's some sort of record. Now, this is a program
that started in the nineteen twenties, so they've been around
a long time, very historic program, but they think that
forty point swing got to be some sort of record
in the record book. McDaniel in that right block trying

to back down Breonna Ware trying to spin move around
Jaia that's left well short, but our reach in and
then a tie up as aeschonero goes to Wisconsin. Nice
job there by the Badgers down low. Daniels and Porter
got their mits on it for Wisconsin, ripped it away
from McDonagh. Jump ball possession Arro to UW Wisconsin down
by one. About a minute into this game, Ronnie Porter

for the Badgers, high on the left side, goes to
Jaya top of the key, hands it off to Porter
between the legs, dribble for her looking to go download
to Jhaia. Nothing happening there. Now, where's gonna move for
Wisconsin right elbow, can't get it there, spins it back
to porter and Wisconsin resets with a dozen on the
shot lock howl. Now ooh, she gets her pocket picks
sticks with it though. Now she'll move in seven to
shoot down load there. Jaya got bumped into free throws

coming up for the Wisconsin freshman. Great to see Jaya
getting a start here today. You've seen her and Gift
Uchenna kind of rotate a little bit on that starting lineup,
both with that great size. So Wisconsin's door a. Jaya
goes to the free throw line. She's just three for
four this season, so she hasn't been to the free

throw line very often. Takes a number of day dribbles,
free throw up and she got it even at three
second free throw upcoming here for Jaia gets very quiet
as I said yesterday, and this gym free throw up

and she got that one too. So Dorijaia hits both
free throws. Wisconsin with their first lead here five to three.
I'll make that four to three. They were down now
four to three. Ninety seconds in Ssconsin gets back in
their man to man defense. It's a good crowd on
hand to here, plenty of purple for James Madison. A
lot of Badger fans that made their way over here,
and some people that live in Florida that I was

talking with coming over to watch the team. But this
gym gets strangely quiet during free throws. Turn around there
for James Madison, poked out off the miss and it
will go to Wisconsin. Ashauntee Barnes who missed that. She
was All sun Belt third team or last year James Madison.
They moved into the Sun Belt Conference four years ago.
They have been at the top of that conference ever since. Really,
and this is a program that they get to the

NCAA Tournament quite often because they get the automatic bid
winning their conference. In their tournament. Here's Howell. Turn around there,
three pointer, right of the circle. She knocks it down well.
Destiny Howell, after hitting four to threes in a season
high yesterday, starts it off right for Wisconsin there seven
to three. Wisconsin leads two minutes in fact to James Madison.

Offensively Robinson right of the circle, moves left of the circle,
bounce pass out. Good job by Wisconsin's cutting off these
driving dukes. Now Stevenson thinking about a three. Nothing there
eight to shoot. There's a three pointer. An McDaniels gets it.

Player of the Year Bennett jmu for six seasons. She

came in during the COVID shortened year, then had an
injury and has been here for all six And how
often will you ever see that again? In this transfer
portal era, Brianna Ware for Wisconsin hid on the right side,
down load of Jhaia right block, goes up an under.
Nice move there, and Dora Zaya got another bucket, a
couple free throws now field goal for her running the
f though, and that's an easy too for Grace McDonough

of James Madison, and you know for the Badgers they
told talked about it on film. Gotta get back in

She found the gall in a tough spot, made her

will replace Dora Zaya. As we anticipated, Coach Pinchton gonna
go to her bench here early on in this game,
less than twenty four hours on the turnaround. If you're
just joining us, she said, I'd have not been a
part of a tournament where I can remember it this
quick of a turn around in thirty plus seasons. That's
saying something outside their steel long two right corner missed it.

Rebound comes down to James Madison six forty to go
in the first nine to eight the Badgers. They hustle
back down on defense, Stevenson trying to call out what
play she wants. She's an old mistransfer from a couple

In the first bad pass, there is mc daniel's trying
to go over to howl on a crosscore pass a
little wide rights, and that'll be a Wisconsin turnover. That
is just the first turnover committed by the Badgers. They
had twenty four yesterday. James Madison with two turnovers in

the first and lacy'st will go out. Lily Kron comes
in for the first time for Wisconsin, the five to
ten senior from Prairie to sheen three pointers this year

can try and answer what McDaniel has done here in

twenty seven percent and they only make six per game,
so you can tell right now. Yes, McDaniel's at a
hot start. But the Badgers, at least in the early going,
They'll give them that three and see if they can
continue this throughout the game. Despite all these threes, Wisconsin's
only down by two with under three to go dangerous

there Daniel's able to grab it though for the Badgers,
they continue offensively. Daniel's gonna drive right baseline, hands it
off to where, she goes up, gets it blocked out
of bounds, last touched by where and right away she
goes to the rep and said that went back on
her referee out buying it. This will be James Madison ball.
See this James Madison defense making the passes difficult. Neovanna

Spassowski will come in here for the Badger. She is
the six foot sophomore wing player from Serbia. Kire Daniels
will go take a seat Coach Pinchton. She's gonna give

plays big minutes, she plays hard. Coach just told the
team yesterday when you're in for three or four minutes

out five for eight. Now James Madison's won for their

the Badgers haven't scored in three and a half minutes.
