Speaker 1 (00:18):
Now, here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Aways.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Welcome into the j and K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick Brucewitz. The
Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Montana State Grizzlies seventy nine sixty seven.
You can join the conversation with us on the hotline
six eight, three, two, one, thirteen ten. This was a

(00:45):
much cleaner all around game for the Wisconsin Badgers. Thanks
were a little back and forth in the first half,
but Wisconsin never looked lost or lost control of this game.
They're able to pull away really behind the strength of
Max Klesmitt. He ties his career high in points as
a Badger tonight with twenty six and really, Nick, Max
was the story of this game. He had a rough

(01:06):
first game against holy Cross, just seven points, but he
looked every bit the key player the Badgers need him
to be tonight.

Speaker 5 (01:13):
Yeah, Max was on fire. Right, So he puts up
twenty six points. He makes six three pointers. Right. This
is the type of performance that we had seen last
year from this guy in his biggest moments. And I'm
just satisfied to see him step up for sure tonight,
because that's what he does. He steps up in big moments,
and that's his performance tonight certainly was a big difference
for their win.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Yeah, he was getting the crowd fired up. Six of
eleven from a three point land twenty six points for
Max Klusman, and I know he was firing up Pat
and Waukesha on the hotline. Pat, I know you had
to be just giddy over there watching Klusman draining all
those threes. Good to hear from you again. How have
you been, pat.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Nick and Dave, I've been doing good. It's good to
be on your post game. I love your show. I
really enjoyed the broadcast. I don't know about you guys,
but I I enjoy the bancher between the Polar Bear
and and Matt Lape. I mean, I remember so well

(02:12):
watching uh Brian when he when he played for the
Badgers on Monday Night's game. They were they were talking
about when that night in Bloomington, Indiana, when the bank
was open. You know, you guys, I watched that live,
that game live, and I remember that shot very very
very well. My DVR or my my v CR. My

(02:36):
VCR is not working anymore, but I probably have that
shot on a VCR tape somewhere in my cabinet. And
it's just neat to to hear him, hear them joke
about stuff like that. And Uh. The other thing I
wanted to share real quick was early in the first half,

(02:59):
Gilly blocked ash shot. I will guarantee you, guys, I
will guarantee it that the Steamer. Yeah, that's my nickname
for Greg Steamsma, the Steamer number thirty four. I remember
when he played with Brian, they controlled the paint man,
the two bigs for for coach bow Ryan and and
and Gardo. Greg Steamsma was a fantastic shot blocker, amongst

(03:25):
other things. He was great on the defensive end and
and also on the offensive end. But I guarantee that
he's been working with Gilly and uh and teaching him
how to block shots. So I think we're gonna see
more of that this year. And I'm just really fired
about fired up about this squad. Max Klezmer klesmit Is

(03:47):
is ice man from the three point Land and it's
really fun when when Max calls, uh does his call?
When when the threes go through? And and John Tanjay Man,
what what an addition to the team. And I'm just
really looking forward to it. And of course we got
the aircraft carrier as of course Deuces Deuces number twenty two,

(04:10):
Big Steve So and then in John Blackwell and Nolan
Nolan Winter the Twins Tours two seven footers, Big Steve
and Nolan So. I love your show. You guys, keep
up the good work and go Red baby, go Red
win it all.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Yeah, there is, there's Pat go Red there it is. Yeah,
the USS croll, the aircraft carrier we got, we got
the return of that this season. Paton Waukeshaw. Always love
his enthusiasm, his energy and h and always the history too.

Speaker 6 (04:43):
Hey, he's got.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
Great perspective that the two of us we can't really
offer in the same way because this guy has watched
every minute of every game since nineteen seventy three. He'll
tell you maybe even longer.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Absolutely, And yeah, you know, Max clus I met a
big game, twenty six points, six to eleven shooting john Tonjay.
You know, another double digit scoring performance from him, thirteen
points and a lot of it done at the free
throw line. Eight of nine free throws for Tonjay, and
he had the first missed free throw for the Badgers

(05:19):
this season, twenty of twenty one. In this game they started,
they made their first twenty five free throws of the season.
They made sixteen against holy Cross, and then they made
their first nine of this game. And then john Tonjay
went to the line, and you know what, the perfect streak.
And some of you may be wondering, how in the

(05:39):
world did this perfect streak come to an end? Well,
let me tell you the broadcaster Jinks is real. My
buddy Nick Brucewitz over here writes down in his notebook
Tonjay two of two from free throw before he makes
the first shot, I tell you, I tell you Nick
right there. If he misses any one of the it's

(06:00):
all on you. And sure enough, first one back iron.
So if you're looking for anyone to blame for the
perfect free throw.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
Shooting, I didn't lace him up, I didn't wear the uniform,
I didn't take the shot. But yeah, I'm just saying
it unfortunate that it happened at that moment because we
both said, hey, what if he misses now because of
what I just did, and he missed. So I'll say this,
they got the monkey off their back. I am responsible
for them not having to worry about going into their
next game still trying to extend a perfect stream.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, but and hey, you know, also got to give credit.
They did rebound after that, and they made the rest
of their free throws rest of the game, twenty of
twenty one from the free throw line ninety five percent.
So Wisconsin in their first two games, they have made
thirty six of their first thirty seven free throw attempts.
So that is certainly a great start for Wisconsin in

(06:49):
that category. Tanjay, he just he keeps getting to the line,
and that's what we saw in Monday's game as well. Tanjay,
you know, he got to the line a ton drawing
these fouls, and he did it again tonight. You know,
he didn't get a ton of shots on record, just
four total field goal attempts, but he drew a ton
of fouls, got himself to the line, and that is

(07:10):
a big role to have on this team.

Speaker 6 (07:12):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (07:13):
Todd Jay's been great at getting to the line and
getting shots up in good looks. Only four shot attempts tonight.
Didn't have to do too much to make a big impact.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
No, he did not, and Wisconsin they end up being
able to pull away for a twelve point lead seventy
nine sixty seven over Montana State. If you'd like to
join the conversation, he can call us on the hot
line six eight three two one thirteen ten. We'll be
back with more on this game. We'll also hear from
Greg Guard later on in the show, and of course

(07:42):
fun facts with Dave that it's coming up. Also, you're
listening to the JANK Security Solutions Basketball postgame.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Show with five Blackwell through the big cord logo with
three with two right which winner slam dot Now the
first half is come to an end. Little buzzer beating
flush from Nolan wins the delivery from John Blackwell six

(08:10):
point lead for Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Welcome back to the Jank Scurity Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
Jan and K Security Solutions from home theaters to smart
lighting to a universal home control go online to jksecurity
dot com and Nolan Winter there with the dunk right
before the half to give Wisconsin that six point lead
at halftime, drawn up coming out of a timeout by

(08:34):
Greg Gard. Fantastic way to break the press and get
Wisconsin some points heading into the half with that six
point lead, and Wisconsin then also outscored Montana State by
six points in the second half. A very consistent game,
Nick for this team, you know, six point lead, thirty
nine points, thirty nine, thirty three in the first half,
then forty to thirty four over Montana State in the

(08:57):
second half. Just consistent level, steady, and I think that
was definitely something good to see out of this Wisconsin
team after a very uneven first game against Totly Cross.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
Yeah, they didn't come out of the gates playing that
well against the Crusaders to open the season, right the
first ten minutes. Coach Guard said, the final thirty was
much better, and that was the reality. They ended up
winning that game by twenty five, So tonight a little
bit better to start. Took them a little bit of time,
but then they went on in quite the run, quite
the role, and they started making their threes, and it
began with klesmant right. So they trail thirteen to ten

(09:32):
early in this one, and then Klezmant makes back to
back threes giving them the sixteen to thirteen lead, right,
So that is what gets you going. And then Tanjay
free throw line, free throw line, free throw line, free
throw line. That's the type of thing that you can
use in the first half to kind of start developing
your dominance, start wearing down the opponent if you can

(09:53):
get them in foul trouble like Wisconsin did you build
off of that, And that's exactly what you said, very
consistent first half, second half play to circle back to
our highlight coming back that dunk before halftime is exactly
what many people often credit Greg Guard as really good
at drawing up the out of bounds played this last

(10:13):
second place the opportunities to get a point on the
board when you can, and credit to Greg Guard.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
He did it again, Yep, he did. And credit to
the players as well being able to execute it. Because
you can have all the well drawn up plays you want,
it's up to the players to make the shot. And
they got a wide open Nolan Winter down there to
put in the dunk right before the end of the
half and taking advantage two of those fouls from Montana
State twelve fouls in the first half. For the Grizzlies,

(10:40):
that guy was concidered of the free throw line quite
a bit, thirteen free throw attempts in that first half,
which was huge. It was key for them in order
to be able to pull away to that lead because
Montana State just six free throw attempts in that first half.
So it's kind of a tale again of Wisconsin getting
to the free throw line above and not allowing their

(11:01):
opponent to get to the free throw line. Montana's State
just seven of ten from the free throw line in
this game. So you hold the free points away from them,
you keep on taking as many as you can. And
that's really I mean, that's the difference in this game.
I mean, thirteen more points on free throw attempts for
Wisconsin than what Montana State had and it's a twelve
point game. That's the difference. That's the game right there.

Speaker 5 (11:25):
Absolutely, and the Badgers were able to see a little
bit more in the paint than Montana State. You knew
what the approach would be from the Bobcats tonight, which
would be shoot a bunch of threes, which they did,
but not be able to do much down low, and
I would argue that Wisconsin didn't do enough. Twenty four
points in the paint for the Badgers, fourteen for the Bobcats,

(11:46):
and considering you got two seven footers on Wisconsin's roster
that are playing heavy minutes, they didn't need to go there, right.
They spent their game really looking for the outside shot.
It helps when you get a guy like Max Klesman
get red hot. You know, he started on fire, that
he cooled down, and then he made one more at
the end. But Klesmitt has proven that he can do

(12:07):
it for stretches. He hasn't proven that he can do
it for full games.

Speaker 6 (12:10):
Right.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
Last year against Marquette, went off in one half, didn't
do anything in another half. Right, He's had so many
moments where you see runs, but not full games. You
need to build off that. He's an upper classman, he's
in his final year. Him and Steven Crowler the elder
statesman here. Tanja comes in as a final year type
guy coming over from Missouri. I'm feeling good about the leadership.
I'm feeling good about potentially their consistency on offense. But

(12:35):
you got to build off of this against Appalachian State
and then take it into a game with Arizona in
just over a week.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, that is gonna be the key test for this
squad when they take on Arizona eight days from now.
And you mentioned the points in the paint too, you know,
twenty four points in the paint over fourteen just fourteen
for Montana State. The great defense for Wisconsin with their
seven footers didn't allow much for the Grizzlies down then,
but also offensively for Wisconsin. You know, you'd think with

(13:03):
all those points in the paint that that Crow and
Winter one of them would have gone off, but that
didn't really happen. Crowd just six points one of four
from the field. Four of us points came from the
free throw line. Nolan Winter six points, three of six
from the field. You know, these guys, you know they
got They totaled twelve rebounds between the two of them,
but they also totaled just twelve points, so they weren't
exactly you know, dominating the scoring in the paint. But

(13:26):
like you mentioned, also they were drawing the attention down there,
which left guys open on the outside, and they found
them and shot fifty percent from the three point line.

Speaker 5 (13:37):
Yeah, incredible work by the Badgers to be able to
perform in the way that they did tonight. This is
an NCAA tournament team, Montana State, they were a first
four team last year. They battled, they didn't get in,
they ended up losing to Grambling. This is a team
that you can't attempt to hold your hat or excuse me,
hang your hat against, because this is a team that

(13:57):
made it just as far as you did last year,
made the tournament but lost.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
H Yeah, it's it's true. It's true. They made it
to that first round and Montana Sey. Here's kind of
the interesting thing too. With Wisconsin. They are admittedly going
to be a heavy three point shooting team this year.
We've seen Greg Guard talk about that, we've seen it
in action in these games. They're gonna hoist up a
lot of threes. But Montana State actually attempted more threes

(14:22):
than Wisconsin did. Montana State attempt at twenty six, Wisconsin
attempted at twenty two, and they hit them at a
fairly similar percentage. Montana State hit twelve of their twenty six,
Wisconsin eleven of twenty two. So you know, really it
was a lot of three point shooting in this game,
and not quite as much on the inside, but still
Wisconsin being able to keep pace with Montana States in

(14:46):
that three point shooting is important because we saw again
just kind of circle back to holy Cross, that first
ten minutes, that first half, they were just one of
ten from the three point line. They weren't hitting their
shots from three, even though they're putting up a ton
of them. Now, we saw it in the second half
of that game, and we saw it all across this game.
They were hitting their threes at a pretty high clip.

(15:08):
And you know, you keep doing that, you're gonna end
up winning a lot of games.

Speaker 5 (15:12):
You're gonna play well, You're gonna win a lot of games.
That's gonna go well if you can't shoot the three.
I'm a little nervous for this group. Yeah, haven't proven
that they can get it down low, but anything's possible.
Feeling good two and zero, nothing better than that.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
Yeah, three point shooting can go hot and cold. And
if it's hot right now, that's good. Hopefully that can
continue over against Appalachian State and especially Arizona, because that
would be a big win to put on the resume
for March if they're able to do that. But we
will get into more of that coming up. We also
have fun facts with Dave that is gonna be coming
up as well. We'll hear from coach Greg Guard his

(15:47):
conversation with Matt Lepey and Brian Butch. We'll get to
all of that coming up, and we'd love to hear
from you again on the talk and text lined UH
six eight three two one thirteen ten Wisconsin over Montana
State tonight seventy nine sixty seven. You're listening to the
jan K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (16:07):

Cats Klesman left quarter three nails it again and Max
Klesman is joining the party tonight.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Welcome back to the J and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame show. From home security to Automation, Jay and K
Security Solutions has you covered. Go to jksecurity dot com
for more info. Dave Gasper here alongside Nick Brucewitz sconsin
Badgers defeated Montana State seventy nine sixty seven and one.
To apologize to UH, Montana State and their fans. They

(16:45):
are the Bobcats, not the Grizzlies. Montana is the Grizzlies,
their bitter rival got them mixed up. It's like Colin's
Colin Wolverine Spartan's like, you know, they they don't, they
don't like that. Yeah, so apologize for that. No big deal.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
You know, we corrected that. We hammered down the Bobcats. Thereafter,
people will make subtle mistakes. So that's gonna be the
greatest mistake from our program. Yeah, we've got a horde
of angry Montana State fans and Montana fans, but we
will have to put them on hold because we have
something much more important coming up here.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
Exactly, and that is fun Facts with Dave. Fun fact
Number one at Montana State is actually the Bobcats. Who knew?
But okay, so fun facts with Dave here. We like
to have some fun, especially after a big win here
for the Badgers. Wisconsin is averaging eighty two points per
game on the season, you know, scoring seventy nine points

(17:44):
here and eighty five points in game one. This is
their This is the first time Wisconsin has scored seventy
nine points in each of their first two games since
the twenty seventeen to eighteen season. So the offense, the
output for Wisconsin has been definitely getting getting a lot better,

(18:04):
doing very well. I mean, last year the scoring offense,
averaging seventy four point seven points per game, was their
highest in two decades. So offense looking a lot better
for this Badger's team. Best one for them, best start
for them since twenty seventeen eighteen. And our final fun

(18:25):
fact here, Greg Guard has now improved his record in
non conference games in the regular season at the Coal
Center to forty nine and five home non conference games
under Greg Guard.

Speaker 5 (18:42):
That's really impressive. That's those are the games you gotta
take care of. Oftentimes you're paying these teams to come
play you, so well done.

Speaker 4 (18:50):
Way to make.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
Sure that you're protecting the company's money and taking care
of business, certainly at.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Home, especially with all that nil money going on around.
You gotta protect the money that now you're giving out.
Absolutely absolutely all right. So, coach Greg Gard, the guy
who has that forty nine to five record against non
conference opponents here at the Cole Center, we're gonna hear
from him coming up his conversation with Matt Lepey. You're

(19:17):
listening to the Jank Security Solutions basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Benjan five to shoot now Walker left wing with three

nine sixty seven. Greg Guard met up with Matt Lepey
and Brian Butch for the game.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Coach Guard joins the court side Wisconsin seventy nine, Montana
State sixty seven. Your final score, Well, we talked before
the game, right, you knew this was gonna be a
heck of a test for your guys. Your passed. I mean,
what did you like most about how your team went about?

Speaker 5 (20:18):
What?

Speaker 2 (20:19):
You know?

Speaker 7 (20:19):
I thought defensively, we got better and it's good that
sometimes it's good when they hit shots on you when
to make mistakes, because then it reinforces why we do
what we do when we do it. You know, it
seemed like every every screen we went under in the
first half, intentional or not intentional, they we were taking
the ball out of the net. So you know, obviously

(20:40):
we I rode experience in those situations as we came,
you know, the second half specifically because of how they play.
Typically inexperienced younger guys kind of get spinning in circles,
especially when you have that many shooters on the floor
and the actions they run. So the guys that have
been embedded in our rules and how we do things

(21:01):
and the gut when we did it, we did it
really well, I thought, and uh, you know, obviously we
get the ball to go in and made shots. Klesman,
welcome back, and you know, did some a lot of
good things, a lot of things to get better at.
But that's a good team. I mean, that's that's an
NCAA tournament team. And then we'll see what they had
what happens in their league. Obviously have to win their tournament.
But you tell just the experience on the floor, how

(21:23):
how old they are, don't get rattled, run good stuff,
got a lot of shooters, so it's a good test
for us.

Speaker 6 (21:30):
We talked a lot about I said it was a
workman's like game for you guys like you follow the
game plan as far as everything that you've done. A
team that likes to get out and shoot threes. You
didn't give up any hardly any transition threes. I think
the first three gave up was the second half second. Yeah,
that three minutes left right down here half yet right
there was exactly I think it was like three minutes left.

Speaker 7 (21:47):
Like photographic memory play like the old guy that coached
you too in the role of the.

Speaker 6 (21:52):
Oh yeah, and then I'll see it three four times
during film the next day, I would. But when you
when you have a game plan like that and your
guys follow it the way that they do, how how
much does that make you really feel like these guys
are buying into everything that you're preaching every day.

Speaker 7 (22:10):
Oh, they're buying in they just don't know some of
that they don't know. Yeah, exact that we're getting any resistance,
they just don't know.

Speaker 6 (22:17):
But it helps, right like the absolutely when you had
the results to back up unders.

Speaker 7 (22:22):
And that's what I told them in the locker room,
I said. The reason I didn't go with some of
you inexperienced or younger guys, you saw what happened. I mean,
the older guys have been there, done that, and understand
specifically when you're you know, have you make one mistake
and it's three points and the way they can light
the scoreboard up, I wasn't gonna, you know, we weren't
going to get into that if we could help it.
When we're not getting into a three point contest, we
have to make sure they they have to guard us,

(22:44):
and let's make sure. I thought, you know, obviously we
get up a couple there late when we headed at
what eighteen or so, and they caught it back to twelve.
But I think all in all, it's a step forward,
you know, and a lot of good things on film
that we'll be able to see things that we did
well and things we got to continue to clean up.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
Yeah, they only took nine threes in the second half.
I'm sure they wanted to take more than two guys
through the years, not allowing a lot of these.

Speaker 7 (23:10):
Exactly, we focus more on minimizing attempts than what the
shooting percentage is. You know, we still want to there's
probably there's a couple I'm sure we could. That percentage
will come into play in terms of we could have
taken it away better. But like I said that, the
least three in the first half were misused on our part,
and but we we learned from it, and we got

(23:32):
better as the game went on.

Speaker 6 (23:33):
You guys have done such a good job of getting
to the free throw on. What have you guys done
so well to get there?

Speaker 7 (23:39):
Well, I think I think the combination of the spacing
of the floor. I think that's important. I think you
got to put pressure on the rim, and there's a
variety of ways you can do it. Obviously, the ball
screen stuff we've we've had bigs on the rim, the
ability to drive it on the back of those ball screens,
you know, the ability with some slide screening with the fours,
you know, to create double gaps, those type of things.

(24:01):
So and then the good old fashioned is rolled into
the big guys, you know, let them go to work.
So it's a combination.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
You know.

Speaker 7 (24:08):
It's a comment I think when spacing and and we
can shoot the ball, you know, I think we got
good shooters, and we got a lot of them. I'd
like to get more guys more minutes, especially Amos and
Amos and Ilver have have played well enough to get
more minutes. But I you know, we gotta I gotta
continue to make sure we're on the right hand side.
That's what That's the most gold number one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

(24:31):
yeah yeah, experiment and other right close scrimmages and stuff like.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
That's a good time.

Speaker 7 (24:37):
They got to keep getting better, as I told them,
And same thing with guys in the backcourt that didn't
get a lot of time or any time because it's
a long season and we're gonna need everybody.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
All right and quick, fairly quick turn here. You got
your app stay coming in Sunday morning. So yeah, another
another good team that was an unknown too with so
many new faces. Right, so right, theme continues here for
a bit.

Speaker 7 (25:00):
It didn't take much to remind what league they came
out of and that they swept the team that we
ended our season last year. So it'll be well. And
that's a good good team. I watched them on tape
last year. They were really good when we were getting
ready for JMU. But yeah, we'll enjoy this one tonight
and start getting ready for Appstate tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
Sounds good. Appreciate your time, as I always badger, said
coach Greg Guard, joining US court side Wisconsin seventy nine,
Montana State sixty seven.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
All right, and there was head coach Greg Gard talking
with Matt Lepey and Brian Butch after this one and yeah,
up next, Nick, Appalachian State coming in on Sunday, eleven
am tip off and Wisconsin looking to make it three
and oh to start the season.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
Yeah, and I think they will if they play like this,
if they play like they did for the final thirty
minutes against the Crusaders and their opener against holy Cross,
I think that they will improve to three and oh.
And that's not an unfamiliar mark for a Badger's group,
certainly under Greg guard that's a guy that has proven
early in seasons that his team can perform really well.
