Speaker 4 (00:39):
Hello everyone, and welcome to Wisconsin Badger Women's hockey. Badgers
are on the road in Mankato today for Game two
against the Minnesota State Mavericks. Thanks so much for joining
us this afternoon that is blessedly much warmer than it
has been of late. My name is Zaxieloff alongside Mark
Green Holland Studio with you as the Badgers get ready
to close out calendar twenty twenty four with the WCCHA Conference.
Battle and battle is the word I use advisedly here,

(01:02):
as these two teams had an epic contest last night
with the Badgers finding a path to a two to
one victory. Let's recap it now. The Badgers got started early,
and following a cross checking penalty against Minnesota State's Genessa
Gasdik WCHA forward of the week Kirston Sims, executed a
perfect pass from behind the net to find w CACHA
defenseman of the week Carolyn Harvey, who drove it straight
into the back of the net just two minutes and

(01:23):
five seconds into the contest. Both teams had opportunities throughout
the remainder of the period, including a flurry of shots
from Minnesota State with just thirty five seconds to go,
all handled by Ava McNaughton. It was more fancy passing
that led to the Badger's second goal, coming five minutes
into the second period. Leila Edwards sent one into the
slot from the faceoff dot, finding Casey O'Brien, who sent
a one touch backhander onwards to Kirston Sims, all alone

(01:45):
on the back door. Sir Simms easily potted the second
and it would turn out game winning goal to make
it to nothing. Minnesota State was nowhere near done, however,
and another cross checking penalty, this time against Wisconsin's Lady
Potter saw the Mavericks go to the power play teen
forty one in the second period. Madison with sugar, was
able to get one past David McNaughton, and we went
into the second intermission with the Badgers up two to one.

(02:07):
A wild and very fast third period ensued, with both
teams training blows and living on the back of some
incredible goaltending. The two sophomore netminders, McNaughton for Wisconsin and
Haley Hanson for Minnesota State were both perfect in the third,
and even though Wisconsin took two penalties in that period,
they kept the Mavericks from equalizing and took home the
WCCHA victory two to one. In regulation. Tonight, they'll need

(02:28):
to be just as sharp to defeat what is clearly
a very good Minnesota State squad. The women in purple
and Gold were not intimidated when facing the Badgers, and
they'll be all the more motivated having come so close yesterday. Meanwhile,
the Badgers can increase their lead in the WCCHA with
a sweep, and they already stand ten points above Ohio State.
It's Badgers Mavericks in man Cato, the final game of
the twenty twenty four calendar year. Stay tuned for that

(02:50):
and more as this game gets underway. This is Wisconsin
Badger Women's Hockey presented by Goodman's The Diamond Store of Madison.

Speaker 5 (04:01):
Back during your intermission. This is Paul Brown with associate
or assistant head coach Dan I know there's been many
titles over the years. We'll just call you the right
hand man. How's that, Dan Cook? And we're going to
talk about recruiting, and we're going to do it, I
think in a two phase situation here number one, as
the Badgers have signed apparently six players. But Dan, first

(04:24):
let's clarify there was COVID involved for all sports with
teams and that kind of thing and eligibility and amount
of years of playing in a nutshell, explain it because
it ends after this year. And how does that impact,
for an example, women's hockey.

Speaker 9 (04:41):
Yeah, any of the players that were junior year or
younger in twenty twenty got an extra year of eligibility,
so a lot of players took that fifth year as
an opportunity to play an next year of college. And
with that being tied, I didn't obviously recruiting. That pushed

(05:02):
our recruiting classes some back by a year, so some
girls had to defer and come in twenty twenty five
instead of maybe twenty twenty four.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
But after this year then you get back to the standardization,
if you will. Now you've got a couple of fifty
year players. You're going to lose Kotlowski.

Speaker 9 (05:21):
And Casey O'Brien, right, correct, We lose two and going
forward there's unless someone takes a red shirt year. And
they've been very impactful, those two for the last five years.
And I believe Katie has actually been here six years
because she had a red shirt year, and so you know,

(05:43):
it's been great to have them. They've been great ambassadors
for our program.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
Now you've got three seniors as well, but could they
potentially come back? That's Lacey Eden, Sarah Waznevitch, and Quinn
Koons or is Quinn done?

Speaker 10 (05:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (05:57):
Yeah, Sarah and Quinn will be done.

Speaker 10 (06:02):
Who is the other?

Speaker 9 (06:04):
Eden had a red shirt year because of the Olympics,
so she wouldn't be a part of the COVID, but
she would have that red shirt year back. She has
yet decided if she wants to come back to college
or go on to the p w HL.

Speaker 5 (06:20):
And when you analyze your needs based on your losses,
what went into that thinking by the staff? Dan?

Speaker 9 (06:26):
Well, you know, obviously you want to make sure you
keep your positions filled. When you look at the quality
of players we're losing. Uh, you know, we need to
bring in a couple strong forwards. As you know, Sarah
brings a lot of speed and grit, and Casey you know,
has been one of our top point getters all four
years or all five years, and so you know those

(06:48):
are going to be big key replacements.

Speaker 10 (06:51):
Quinn is uh moving on.

Speaker 9 (06:54):
So obviously we need another goalie and you know, defense,
we like to continue to bring in younger d maybe
red shirt them, help them develop for a year and
then you know, so we're bringing in a couple d
that we think have a very high ceiling and with
some more development, maybe playing fewer minutes or red shirting,

(07:16):
you know, are going to develop into some strong defensive players.
You know by their sophomore, junior, senior years.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Dan, you've been around the program a long time. We're
chatting with Dan Cook and as a recruiting process overall
changed with the change in the game, with the success
that the Badgers have had, with the facilities that are here.
Any big difference over the years.

Speaker 9 (07:39):
You know, I think when you start to look, the
biggest difference is that we're starting to get more involved
in international players. You know, we have a check player
coming in twenty twenty five, We have a verbal commitment
from a Slovakian player, So we're spending some time in
Europe recruiting.

Speaker 10 (07:59):
But you know, it's for us.

Speaker 9 (08:02):
It's about trying to identify the top talent in North
America and Europe and hopefully trying to convince them to
be Badgers.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
And speaking of that, let's have you give us a
rundown on the players that officially will be coming to
Wisconsin next year.

Speaker 9 (08:19):
Sure, you know our first as I mentioned, our Czechoslovakian player,
Czech Republic Adela Chapaviola. I think I'm saying that close
to being correct.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
We got to come up with a nickname for that.

Speaker 10 (08:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (08:34):
But Adela, you know, is you'll see in the Badger
fans will see is a very special offensive player.

Speaker 10 (08:42):
She does a lot of things.

Speaker 9 (08:43):
Well, not very tall or big, but she's a great
efficient skater, has a great hockey IQ, and she's someone
that you know is going to put up probably equal
points of assists per goals. Just you know, reminds me
a lot, you know of Sarah Bauer back in the time,

(09:04):
very good i Q and sees things and understands the game.

Speaker 5 (09:07):
Well and also enjoining her.

Speaker 9 (09:11):
Our other forward would be Nicole Gorba Tankel. Nicole is
obviously the Kelly sister of Kelly, and she is again
someone with Kelly size and nature, a power forward, has
a good knack for taking the puck to the net,

(09:32):
being creative with it, and so we're looking forward to
working with her. How about defensively, defensively, we have Nicole's sister, Rachel.
Rachel is also out of Chicago, Kelly's other sister, again
good size, has been part of the international game with

(09:53):
us A, been invited to a few camps and tournaments,
and again she's someone that aswell has tremendous strength, has
a very heavy shot, and we're looking forward to working
with her obviously, you know, with a lot of our

(10:13):
d returning, we think she's someone that can develop, you know,
with some practice and maybe a red shirt year.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
How about the remaining I think there's three more, right.

Speaker 9 (10:23):
Yeah, we have also Mackenzie Jones out of andover Minnesota.

Speaker 10 (10:28):
Like Rachel, she's been a part of the.

Speaker 9 (10:32):
USA program at the U eighteen level, been invited to
some camps, she's a captain leader of andover has one
of state tournament there. She has some great leadership skills.
She's a very good soccer athlete as well. So I
would describe her, you know, as someone that's very athletic

(10:55):
on the ice and brings some great size I believe
five ten or five eleven, and so again, she's somebody
you know that we aren't expecting maybe to come in
and play a lot of minutes right away, but has
a very high ceiling and looking forward to working.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
With her in the final two.

Speaker 9 (11:13):
The final two would be Riah Stewart, our goalie from
Nova Scotia. She's playing boys right now and junior programs
up in Canada. Recently she won a big game. She
stopped seven shooters in a shootout. She continues to do
very well. She's not someone that's very thick, but she

(11:36):
loves to compete. She challenges shooters well. She's got very
good instincts. And Reid's plays and we just really like
her athleticism on the ice and in the crease.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
And the last one, Oh.

Speaker 9 (11:52):
I'm sorry, Charlotte picking picking hay and out of Ontario.
I probably just said her name wrong too, but Charlotte
and Riyah are the two players that deferred the year
because of the COVID situation. And Charlotte is a special forward,
very competitive, very strong. I know she's practiced, you know,

(12:14):
with some of the PWHL teams a little bit.

Speaker 10 (12:17):
She's also.

Speaker 9 (12:21):
Been a part of the Canadian U eighteen program. She
is gonna, I think, like Adella, will turn a lot
of heads early in her career. She can play her offside,
she can play center or wing, and again she just
brings a lot of strength, tenacity on the ford check.
We'll play heavy on our opponent's defensive players.

Speaker 10 (12:44):
And so.

Speaker 9 (12:46):
Again, like Adela, I think you're gonna notice those two
right away in the lineup.

Speaker 5 (12:50):
Sounds like a pretty good group. That's Dan Cook. We'll
be back after this time out.

Speaker 11 (12:56):

Speaker 14 (14:15):

just keeps driving the net bangle right up on the

Speaker 1 (14:22):
Now with the call of the game. Here's the Hall
of Famer All Brawn on ten seventy the game.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
Hello everyone, thanks for joining us back here in the studio.
After the pregame comments from Dan Cook. Great to talk
with the associate head coach. We'll get the second half
of that interview later on in the broadcast, but we
are coming up on the start of this game. The
Badger's facing it off against Minnesota State Man Cato. I'm
joined now by Mark Greenhall and Studio Badgers on the
road in Minnesota State and coach. It was a heck

(14:52):
of a game yesterday, a real contest between these two,
kind of a heavyweight bout. They were trading blows the
whole time, and you and I were both talking during
the break. It sure feels like we're only going to
see an escalation of that in the second game.

Speaker 14 (15:04):
Yeah, I think you know, day two, the stakes get higher.
They'll want to get us back coming so close like
they did yesterday. It was even steven. We didn't play
our best game. I think our players are aware of that,
and I'm sure they reviewed some video that clarifies what
we got to do different or better, you know, and
we'll build on that and hopefully come out and handle

(15:25):
them today. But it's going to be a barn burner
right to the buzzer.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
It was a physical contest yesterday. We saw a few
penalties those penalties did get converted for goals. The Badger's
got a power play goal, Minnesota State got a power
play goal. You can definitely see how taking time in
the box gives your opponents an opportunity. And you said
during the broadcast yesterday, you cannot give this Minnesota State
team an inch. They are this close to capitalizing even

(15:49):
five on five. You give them a five on four,
they're going to take advantage. I agree.

Speaker 14 (15:53):
It's a big point.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
You know.

Speaker 14 (15:54):
I've got a cardinal rule. It's like, if you force
yourself to play a man short against good team and
expect to win, you're kind of dreaming. So we got
to stay honest and stay out of the box.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
As you look at it. Last night, Ava McNaughton had
a tremendous game in that she played great. She's going
to get the start again tonight. So you and I
were looking at the line sheets though, and at the
stat board. Susette Fauchet, the senior goalie for Minnesota State
out of Middleton, Wisconsin, actually just down the road from
us here, is going to be in net She played
three seasons at Franklin Pierce before coming here to Minnesota State.

(16:28):
She played fourteen games for them last year. She's only
appeared in two games this season. Are you surprised at
that change off of a sophomore Haley Hanson?

Speaker 14 (16:36):
I am, especially after Hanson's performance yesterday. She really made
that a game right down to the buzzer and the
only thing I can and it's only speculation on my part.
She might be tired, she may have sustained some type
of minor injury. I don't know, but I hope she's
all well. But she certainly performed yesterday. You know, unless

(16:56):
she's tired or injured, you know, I'd probably come back
with her day. But those coaches know what they're doing,
so I'm sure they got faith in Susette in the
goal today.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
I'm torn on Susette. I actually know her father. Her
father is doctor leef o'shet. He's a burn surgeon out
at UW and I've worked with him in the operating room.
So part of me is tempted to want to see
her do well because I want the kids and friends
of mine to do well. But I really do want
the Badgers to come through on this one. And with
that in mind, this is the final game of the
twenty twenty four calendar season. The Badgers have thirty nine

(17:27):
wins out of forty two games played in this calendar
year of twenty twenty four. They can get to forty
if they can get there today, and they're also ten
points ahead of Ohio State and the WCCHA standings. What
would it mean to go into twenty twenty five thirteen
points up on your closest rival in the conference?

Speaker 14 (17:44):
Obviously that would have some real benefits psychologically, but also
I just think to win today and end the first
half of the year the first semester with a victory
kind of leaves a good taste in your mouth, and
that's what you want to head into.

Speaker 4 (17:56):
The holidays with.

Speaker 14 (17:57):
So hopefully we'll answer the bell today absolutely.

Speaker 4 (18:01):
Lots of Badgers are going to be heading to Finland
next week to take part in the USA Team USA
Women College Selects six Nations tournament out there in Tampere, Finland,
and we hope to send them off with a victory today.
It'll be the first line for the Badgers to get
things started on offense, Sims, O'Brien and Edwards. They'll be
backed up by Jungles and Harvey on defense. Otremba in

(18:21):
the dot for Minnesota State and the face off is
won by the Badgers and we are underway, stolen away
quickly and taken by Tuttle. Minnesota State gets the first
offensive possession in the corner. Otrenda loses control and it's
taken by Edwards, who finds Harvey in her own slot.
Harvey cross Ice has the pass picked off by Otremba,
who wheels it right back into Badger territory where Vivian
Jungles will have it behind the net. Nineteen forty to

(18:43):
go here at the Mayo Clinic Events Center in man Cato.
No score in this first period as the Badgers chase
it down into the Minnesota State zone. On the clearing
attempt from Jungles, O'Brien up towards the point. Nobody there though,
and it comes out into neutral Ice kirst and Sims
loses an edge and now on the counter attack of
the Mavericks, Lady Potter out there finds Ava Murphy as
she rims it to the opposite side of the cage.

(19:05):
Badgers touch it up, trying to save an icing here
that one did come down from quite a distance, but
no icing the calls that went past the Minnesota State
skater and the Mavericks have it in their own zone
back to neutral ice, immediately picked back up by the
Badgers and dump back in first first minute here, and
now we do get a whistle. I believe as that
one went out of play first minute here, very back
and forth. Neither team had good possession in those first

(19:27):
sixty seconds.

Speaker 14 (19:28):
Yeah, I don't think our passes were very sharp, you know,
and the old adage managed a puck coming through the
neutral zone and that starts in your own end. So
we want to make sure on our passes, don't force
it if it's not there, don't try and send it
to a player that's covered.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
From the out of play. The face off rate in
center ice Cassie Hall and the dot now for the Badgers,
but Minnesota State does win the draw. Paul grabs it
at her own blue line on the loose puck Potter
trying to clear it out. Nearly a giveaway from Minnesota State.
They dropped it to the center, but it went past everybody,
and now Gorbatenko with a nice touch to generate a
two on one with these feed to Eden shot in
a save like Gohoy a two on one break Eden

(20:05):
had a good shot and she caught Fouche up high
on the chest. Protector couldn't get it Buyer. The first
save for the goalie out of Middleton is a good
one from Minnesota State.

Speaker 14 (20:14):
It sure was. I mean, Gorbatenko slid that puck right
into the slot, good high quality shot. Their goalie came
up big.

Speaker 4 (20:21):
That chance was all Gorbatenko. She worked really hard in
front of the player benches to get it forward and
then a killer pass. The Badger's now back in their
own zone with Lady Potter sending it around the far
side boards, Minnesota State turns it around the other way
to the near side eighteen thirteen to go in the
scoreless first period. Badgers took the game yesterday two to one,
looking to complete the sweep here on Saturday, out in Mankato,

(20:41):
Eden on the near sideboards finds Gorbatenko again. Puck has
poked off her tape. Eden following though, and is able
to move it through center ice dump it back down.
Badgers will change as the Mavericks pick it up in
their own territory, picked off here this time by twenty
one m of Venusio. Feed to the center through traffic,
but nobody could get it for the Badgers. Harvey the point,
finds Venusio. They've been matching up on defensive pairings a

(21:03):
lot so far as the coaches try different things. Venusio
and Harvey both offensively minded defense players. Seventeen thirty seven
to go. As the Mavericks have it behind their own net,
carrying near side, tap it forward for tuttle out of
her reach, comes into the Badger's zone. Venusio there crosses
over to Harvey on the opposite side, finds Wasnevitch. She'll
come in on the right wing edge of the Minnesota

(21:24):
state zone. She'll chip it forward and look to get
a change as Picard puts a little pressure behind the net.

Speaker 14 (21:30):
All right, there is where I would like to see
F two get a little pressure too, you know. Make
that a two person for check and give them resistance
trying to break it out of their zone.

Speaker 4 (21:39):
Badger's in center Ice grab it off the tap of Fauchet.
Excuse me, BORGERII and now Hannah Halverson leading that freshman line,
pursues it beneath the net as McCarthy and scannal come
and get it. Scannell tries to pass toward the center.
It hits the back of the net and stays behind
the cage. Scannal gets loose with it, though Halverson in
the slot try to backhand, didn't get the lumber on.

(22:00):
Landy Potter to the hashbarks her shot is wide on
the right side of the cage. Slid it along the
ice but missed the net wide.

Speaker 14 (22:06):
Good idea, but we got to hit the net.

Speaker 4 (22:08):
Scannal now behind the net. She's got a little bit
of open space up towards the point. Lady Potter there
around a defender trades with Scannaled to the outer hashmarks.
Potter with one hand tries to find Halverson. Instead, She's
checked off the puck and lanks at the Captain of
Minnesota State able to break it out on the right side.
Badger's regathered, though on a loose puck, turning it right
around is Halverson again. McCarthy at the point sends towards

(22:30):
the center. Scannal knocked down hard and the slot couldn't
get a shot to go. Jungles comes out on the
ice and is able to move it across one time
drive from Averra Murphy is blocked by the stick of
Jamie Nelson. The alternate captain from Minnesota State prevents that
one from getting through to the goaltender Fauchet. Badger's in
their own zone. As the puck rattled its way there,
Minnesota State tries an attack instead, the Badger's counter working forward.

(22:52):
It's Sims feed into the center. Couldn't quite find the
intended target. But now here's Venusia. Her shot is right
off the face mask of Oh she got in front
of that one, and the rebound cleared out by the defense.
They take it behind their own net. Now moving forward
is Rosky back hands it along and there's Leila Edwards
striding for it, putting a four check on pass up

(23:13):
towards the slot. Case O'Brien can't quite handle it cleanly,
it comes to Venusio in neutral ice.

Speaker 14 (23:20):
Yeah, let's see if you know this line can get
something going here. A little chemistry between Sims and Edwards
and O'Brien like they typically do.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
We do get a whistle there. I believe it's for
off side. So with fifteen twenty three to go, still
scoreless here in the first period, Wisconsin has two shots
on net, no shots so far from Minnesota State, and
the Badgers have looked sharp on offense, and how about
Hima Venusio. She's getting a little more playing time and
you can see that same spark that Carolyn Harvey has
in terms of wanting to participate on offense.

Speaker 14 (23:47):
Yeah, and she's making good decisions so far.

Speaker 10 (23:49):
You know.

Speaker 14 (23:49):
I like that she's capable. It's just getting used to
being out there. And who you paired with? What decisions
do you make?

Speaker 4 (23:55):
Gorbatenko comes up left wing side, tries to get a
pass through center, doesn't make it, sues the puck into
the far corner. Loose bucket is gathered by the Mavericks
as they look to break things out of their zone
in neutral ice, though grabbed nicely by Cassie Hall. Pass
back to Gorbtenko finds hal again, haul down into the slot,
fakes the past to Eden, swings over the top of
the shot, feeds to eat in front of it.

Speaker 10 (24:16):
Still loose.

Speaker 4 (24:17):
It's right in front of Fauchet. She's crammed into the
net and now we get a whistle. Fauchet was being
physically pushed back into the net. Yeah, by the mass
of skaters in front of her. Venusio with a little
chuckle there as she talks with the referee, and let's
look at this replay. Here, swung over the top by Hall,
feeds it in front. Quick intervention from the defense, Gorbatenko

(24:38):
nearly kicked it past, and then finally the referee blows
the whistle.

Speaker 14 (24:42):
There was about ten people in a radius of a
silver dollar.

Speaker 4 (24:46):
There as it is, though no score, and we'll face
it off again. Badgers get tied up with the referee
along the far side of the Maverick zone. Maverick's able
to take advantage and get it out into neutral ice,
dump it into Badger territory where Harvey will have it
behind the net. Scoreless in the first period, fourteen and
a half minutes to play out here in Mankato, shot
is blocked by Gorba Tenko and it comes all the

(25:08):
way back into the Mavericks zone. Badgers will pursue. Lacy
Eden nearly stole it away, but Minnesota State does send
it into center ice for Maryann Piccard of Wisconsin. Picard
backhands is shill dump and change comes across on the
near side Minnesota ahead to Jamie Nelson lost control of
the puck and now here's enright that's going to take

(25:28):
it behind the net. On the far side finds Wa
Nevitch back to enright looking for a player down low.
Nobody there as the Badgers were changing. Now Picard comes
in hard passes out of the reach of the intended
target up at the point that was Vivian Jungles. Harvey
has to get it all the way back in the
Badger' zone. Harvey though a quick pass and now the
Badgers pursue as it comes behind the net, no icing

(25:48):
the call. Picard able to beat out the hustle of
the Minnesota State player and now the Badgers have it.
Send to Piccard in a slot and a backhanded attempt
doesn't go was Nevit sent a bounting pass and Card
couldn't quite get the blade on it. Thirteen thirty to play,
go ahead.

Speaker 14 (26:03):
Coach, you know that line Picard, Enwright and Wasnowitz. It's
like third trademark is aggressive port checking, and you can
see the positive results that it yields. You know, they
really do a nice job.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Works very well for these Badgers, and they count on
that third line for production and for minutes. Ladie Kotlowski
back on the ice after having been absent last week.
Nice little stretch past two liner. Here we come down low,
Maggie Scandal backhand store man. What a stretch pass to
break Maggie Scandal loose, She fights through a defender, puts

(26:36):
it to the upper right corner, glove side. It's one nothing, Wisconsin.

Speaker 14 (26:39):
You know you can She was showing signs of it
earlier today, but as the game goes on, you see
it even more so. And that's the healthiness of Scandal.

Speaker 4 (26:47):
You know.

Speaker 14 (26:48):
She came off out of the picture for a while,
had like a concussion like symptoms, and she's recovering and
it's taken a while. As those things do, you got
to give them time. But boy, she's performing right now
and that was a great example of it. On goal
on the kot Lawski they.

Speaker 4 (27:02):
Mark that down as unassisted. I feel like Katie Kotlowski
was an assist on that one.

Speaker 14 (27:06):
We may see somebody was asleep at the wheel there.

Speaker 4 (27:09):
We may see a scoring revision on that one either way.
So put that team in the first period. It is
Maggie Scandal certainly from Kotlawski, if not an assist from Kotlowski,
and the Badgers are up one nothing off the draw.
The puck is controlled by Minnesota State and as I
watched that one coach, I thought potentially they were going
to get Minnesota state for a penalty there holding scandal.
What a job to fight through.

Speaker 14 (27:29):
Yeah, she really battled through with a lot of strength
and persistence.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
O'Brien puts a shot on Fouchet. She freezes it down
with twelve thirty one to go. Great effort from the
Badger freshman who as we see the replay here, yes
Seafert really had a hand on her, yet it's past her.
What a nice backhand forehand move to put that top
shelf and get the score.

Speaker 14 (27:48):
Yeah, that defender did everything they could do impede Scannal's progress,
but it was not to be.

Speaker 4 (27:52):
Venusio center point off the draw in the Minnesota state
zone at the point a shot comes through and again
cleanly gloved, and we've seen a good glove from Fauchet,
but we have seen a lot of her glove. I
wonder if the Badgers saw something in the tape that
they reviewed of her, because they seem to be going
glove side.

Speaker 14 (28:07):
At Yeah, they're picking that spot. One of them counted already.

Speaker 4 (28:11):
Sure did. Venusio gets that one off the draw at
the point edwards a shot, it's deflected high and into
the safety netting. Edward's in the high slot, but a
stick from Minnesota State deflects it away from the net.
Another face off will come. Twelve seventeen to go in
the first period, one nothing Wisconsin with a seven to
nothing shots on goal lead.

Speaker 14 (28:29):
Yeah, that's pretty lopsided and shots. I didn't realize that
till I took a look at it.

Speaker 4 (28:33):
Lang c versus O'Brien and the face off dot lank
Suth does win it. Minnesota State tries to backhand it
along the glass on the near side. Venusio holds Edwards
assisting at the point, and now we get a whistle
and we may have a penalty coming up here unless
it's off sides. Potentially the puck just rabbled off sides
of the blue line and that appears to be the call,
so off sides against Wisconsin will take the face off

(28:55):
just outside of the Maverick zone with twelve oh nine
to go in the first period. Off that draw, the
Badger's push it briefly into the zone, tap it again
and check up on the delayed off sides Sims working
at the near point comes all the way back to
Badger territory overskated by O'Brien and the Mavericks send it
beneath the net, this time for Jamie Nelson. Nelson circles
all the way around, drops it off at the point

(29:17):
back to Langsteth, who rims it around near side. With
eleven forty seven to play in the first period, one
nothing Wisconsin thanks to the so far unassisted goal from
Maggie Scannell at the near point of the Badger zone.

Speaker 14 (29:30):
You know, man Cato, they have puck possession. That's why
I'm surprised they haven't gotten any shots on goal yet.

Speaker 4 (29:35):
Yeah, I just haven't been able to get one pass.
The defense of the Badgers having a lot more success
so far this game. Badgers send a puck down for icing,
and so we'll head back to their zone for a
face off with eleven twenty six to go in this
first period.

Speaker 14 (29:49):
Yeah, we'll see what we can do here in this
defensive zone face off.

Speaker 4 (29:54):
A couple of players getting back today both or back
this week, those being Scandal and Kotlowski combined for that
first goal. Great to see him on the ice and
great to see him having success as well. Badgers win
the face off in their own zone and it's Kirsten
Sims behind the net. She accelerates far side, now crosses
over to Leila Edwards, who comes in on the right
wing edge. She's got O'Brien with r Edwards finds O'Brien

(30:15):
at the faceoff dot. She is forced down all the
way into the near corner and hassled repeatedly by Rusky
Rosky putting some real pressure on Gorbtenko into assists. Now
it's skated away by Minnesota State. Cross eyes pass finds Goldsworthy.
She'll come in left wing side for the Badgers and
dump it in to the Wisconsin zone. Badger's rim it

(30:36):
near side, Lacey Eden ahead trying to find Cassie Hallet's
out of her reach though and turned around by Minnesota State.
Badgers quickly send it back into the Maverick zone, and
just as quickly it's back out again, both teams having
trouble moving through the neutral zone. Now the Mavericks send
it into the slots, skated away by Wisconsin, puck on
the near wall the Badger' zone. With ten thirty three
to play in this first period, one nothing, the score

(30:57):
in favor of Wisconsin on unassisted goal by Maggie Scandal
is the difference so far. Cassie Hall across to the
far side of the Badger zone as Eden takes it
along tap for Gorbtenko swatted back by Minnesota State once
again Harvey and neutral ized. She sticks around an attacker,
face off dot shot in the save, loose puck gathered
by the defense of Minnesota State. Fauchet's rebound control a

(31:20):
little suspect earlier.

Speaker 14 (31:21):
Yeah, that was a hard enough shot. She couldn't pick
it clean. It popped out of her glove.

Speaker 4 (31:25):
Face off on the excuse me puck on the near side,
right in front of the scorer's table. Goorbatenko there, she'll
dump it and get a change for Wisconsin. With nine
to fifty five to play in this first period, right
at the point hassling.

Speaker 14 (31:38):
You know there's that fore check in.

Speaker 4 (31:39):
Look, here comes Picard backhand at the top.

Speaker 14 (31:42):
She hit the crossbar and it looked like a goal
from here.

Speaker 4 (31:45):
Picard with the Gordon bomb Bay triple deek. She hits
the crossbar, quick shot from Potter. It's high d puck
on the ice, still loose. There are six bodies collapsed
in front of the net. Everyone was hitting the deck
and the Badgers couldn't quite get it. Nine to twenty
seven to go in the first period. Still won nothing
in favor of Wisconsin. Not for lack of effort, though.

(32:06):
Wasnevitch taps it in. She's got end right in Picard
with her, but the puck taken by the defense of
Minnesota State to their own near side wall. Try a
backhand clearing attempt, can't get it by Here's Wasnevitch with
Potter in the slot. Was Nevitch feeds to her and
it's just over the top of her stick at the
point Ava Murphy now to the center point. A shot
coming and it bangs off the back of someone's shin pad.

(32:27):
No good.

Speaker 14 (32:27):
Yeah, a lot of traffic there, yep, that.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
One from Mary and Picard and now Minnesota State able
to get it into neutral ice. Badger's getting a change
and it might be a bad one. Is here comes
Minnesota State with a look a top of the circle
shot broken up by Landy Potter. Good job to get
back on d by the Badger defenseman.

Speaker 14 (32:43):
Nice block by Potter.

Speaker 4 (32:44):
Binley McCarthy on the far wall of Badger's territory trying
to work this one out nice job to play it
through through the skates of the opponent, comes to Lady
Potter behind the net. With eight thirty three to go
in this first period, Badger's still lead one nothing. And
now we do get a whistle and this is going
to be a penalty on Ava Murphy two minutes for
interference against Murphy at eleven thirty in this first period,

(33:08):
So Wisconsin will have their first penalty kill. A huge
opportunity for Minnesota State as they will get the power
play here. Ava Murphy signaled for interference. We'll see if
we can get a replay for you. That one must
have been away from the puck.

Speaker 14 (33:22):
Like I said earlier, you know you want to stay
out of the box. So we'll see if we kill
this one off here. I'm not sure exactly what in
practice now she got decked.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
Yeah, Murphy got crushed.

Speaker 14 (33:32):
It got up now it's all the stick one flying.
I don't know what happened there.

Speaker 4 (33:35):
Yeah Murphy yourself got pretty well shoved down and the
unfortunately our camera angle didn't show us what the aftermath
might have been. But it is Ava Murphy who does
get called for interference. We're going to take a short
time out you're listening to Badger Women's hockey on AM

Speaker 4 (34:29):
So the Badger's taken on Minnesota States. Here in the
first period, they are on the penalty kill. Ava Murphy
called for interference on the powerplay. Are the Mavericks one
nothing Wisconsin Here in the first period Mavericks bring it
into the slot of the badger'szone trial one handed shot,
but they couldn't get it to go. Excellent defense as
always by Vivian Jungles. Minnesota State still controls in Badgers

(34:50):
oone top of the circle, go to the point back
to the top of the circle, lose control there. Hustling
in was O'Brien didn't let them get a shot away.
Tuttle down at the bottom of the near circle, fed
through traffic, broken up and sent away by Carolyn Harvey.
Harvey's got it near side of the Badger zone. What
a backhand clear but a great grab by the hand
of Julianna Gastick, one of two Gastick twins on this team.

(35:12):
But now here come the Badger's two on one and
they've got a one un done break Casey O'Brien bottom
of the near circle. Feast to Eden and she couldn't
get the shot away. But O'Brien has control Harvey at
the center point. She's gonna let to take it back.
And I agree with you. I think Eden could have
taken that shot. She gave it to O'Brian. O'Brien then
try to pass. Yeah, but they weren't able to get
it to go and went selfish.

Speaker 14 (35:32):
Yeah, you know, but sometimes just pull a trigger.

Speaker 4 (35:35):
Fifty six seconds to go on the powerplay seven to
twenty three in the period, the Badger's up won nothing
thanks to an unassisted goal from freshman Maggie Scandal. Minnesota
State set up in the Badger zone top of the
circle from a sugar. She had the one goal from
Minnesota State last time, shot in a glove save from
Ava McNaughton tipped it up over the net and that's
her first save of the game. The first shot on
goal for these Minnesota State Mavericks so far in this period.

(35:58):
Up against the wall of Sidney Lan sith Now center
point for Minnesota State, shot a defensive deflection and a
pad save from the Badger's Mackenzie Borgerie had that shot
lang Styth high slot shot blocked by Edwards, doesn't make
it through and backhanded clear by the Badgers. Fifteen seconds
on the power play six forty five in the period
one nothing Wisconsin. As Minnesota State skates it behind their own.

Speaker 14 (36:20):
Net, they realize job by this penalty killing unit so.

Speaker 4 (36:24):
Far exactly only one a really good opportunity. Otherwise the
Badger's doing good work in front of Ava McNaughton. Tonight,
the penalty expires, both teams are full strength. Minnesota State
and the Badger's zone tries to send it toward the slot,
blocked away by Landy Potter back behind the net and
Jungles is chasing turned around the other direction. Minnesota State
has it there, send it toward the face off douts.

(36:45):
Shot is blocked that time off the stick of Goldsworthy,
and now here comes Finley McCarthy finds Potter. Potter stops
up at the far point, drops it ahead for Scannal,
who had the goal earlier in the period. Six h
four to go in the first one, nothing Wisconsin out
here at Minnesota State. Minnesota State putting the pressure on
coming towards the badger zone, but it's broken up at
the blue line, and here's Kirsten Simms. Sims has one

(37:06):
defender to beat. Stickliff doesn't let her get a shot on.
Puts the pass into the slot, but Minnesota State skates
it away.

Speaker 14 (37:13):
I have a blind backhander, but a good idea, I mean,
Cassie Hall.

Speaker 4 (37:17):
The Finley McCarthy high slot shot and that one is
gloved cleanly by Fauchet. Frozen down with five point forty
to go.

Speaker 14 (37:25):
Yeah, it's uh nice killed that penalty off, kept a
little momentum going, got a shot on net here.

Speaker 4 (37:31):
McCarthy actually got a redirect on that one too. It
hits Shelby gatormpsen Ah, but a nice job to track
and catch by Fauchet. Badgers win the draw in the
Minnesota State zone. After the freezing of the puck there,
Eden puts it into the near corner for Kelly. Gorbitenko
rims around opposite side for Cassie Hall outer Hashmarks now
haul works to the slot, tries a shot. Instead, it's

(37:53):
poked away to Harvey at the point Venusio center point,
she finds Eden working down low puck in the corner.
Now Gourbatenko right behind the net back to Cassie Hall
towards Eden. Instead, it's on the stick of Minnesota State.
They tip it towards the point. Badger's control there managed
to hold the zone, whip it back to center, but
it's taken away by Lily Ramirez high off the glass

(38:14):
and she's able to clear it into center ice with
five h two to play in the first period. Badger's
immediately turn around. Here's Gorbutenko to thearfaceoff dot shut. Oh
just saved. You could tell Fourchet didn't see it. She
fell backwards and was able to get it before it
crossed the goal line.

Speaker 14 (38:28):
Yeah, she didn't know where it was momentarily and thought
maybe it squeezed through her pads in the five hole there,
but she had enough on it to hang on.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
Great job by Goorbatenko to get that shot off. Just
pushed to the net and fire. Face off in the
Minnesota State zone is won by the Mavericks. They move
it behind their own net for Gasday. Battle ensues at
the outer hashmarks. They try and turn direction, Wisconsin won't
let them. Fight continues on the wall. Puck beneath the net,
now Minnesota State to the near side, up the wall

(38:56):
for Tuttle. She clears it into center. Ice tries a
stretch pass. Nothing doing is the Badgers turn it right
back out. Tuttle moves it near side, now for Gastick
taking up the wall by Wasnevitch turned around again and
this one comes all the way into the Badger zone.
McNaughton stops it up behind the net, fave of Murphy.

(39:17):
Murphy tries to go cross. Ice doesn't quite connect, but
able to track it down as Kotlowski. Kotlowski has its
strip by Jamie Nelson on the near side.

Speaker 14 (39:24):
Yah, you going to clear that zone when you get
it that close.

Speaker 4 (39:27):
Murphy right on top of it. Puck behind the net
for Wisconsin again. Four h five to play in the
first period. One nothing Wisconsin here thanks to the Maggie
scandal goal Badger's loft a high, one down. This one's
going to come down a bit too far. Hand is
up and icing is the call. With three fifty five
to play in the first.

Speaker 14 (39:45):
Yeah, there's only what just under four minutes left if
period's clipping along pretty good with only one penalty and
one score.

Speaker 4 (39:51):
So exactly right and eleven to one the shots on
goal advantage four Wisconsin.

Speaker 14 (39:55):
I can't believe that.

Speaker 4 (39:57):
I know. It doesn't feel like Minnesota State has had
that lit of an offensive presence.

Speaker 14 (40:01):
But they have had puck possession time wise, but just
not getting We're keeping them at the perimeter.

Speaker 4 (40:06):
Evidently, defense of the Badgers playing very well today in
terms of not permitting those high danger chances. Murphy gives
off for Kotlowski up the nearboards on a stretch pass.
It's out of the reach of Enright and in center
ice it'll be taken by Nelson of Minnesota State. She
comes in three on three. Nelson cross ice into the
slot around one defender. Backhand is off Kotlowski and wide

(40:27):
that time coming from Claire Vickige. Kotowski plays it with
a hand in front of the net. Nice job to
get it away from tender McNaughton. But now they do
whistle her for a hand pass. Saw the referee signaling
at the back there.

Speaker 14 (40:39):
What's nice that Kotlowski did there is she didn't just
step back and wait in the slot for somebody to
bring it into that high percentagere as. She stepped out
one or two strides and contested them before they got
in a spot where they could be a real danger.

Speaker 4 (40:52):
Kotlowski having a very good game so far, we think
she deserves a spiritual assist, if not an assist on
the sport shing.

Speaker 14 (40:58):
That guy must have been smoking a cigarette with that
went on, because she clearly had a nice long stretch pass.

Speaker 4 (41:02):
Here Badgers get the puck out of their zone off
of the face off right at the blue line. That's
turned back around and with three point thirteen to go,
here comes Kirsten Simms working up out of the Badger's zone.
Attempted stretch passes intercepted by Minnesota state feet across shot
and it's deflected to the wall. That time, coming from
Van Batavia, Minnesota, stayed into the corner. Now looking towards

(41:23):
the slot, nothing there and now here comes Sims. Kirstin
Simms got a little bit of speed. Whips have passed
to Casey O'Brien on the left wing side, O'Brien bottom
of the circle, Sims in the slot. Edwards is shutting
a score man.

Speaker 14 (41:35):
That was beautiful.

Speaker 4 (41:36):
What a flip pass. She flipped it over Kirstin Sims
or over her stick and instead found Leila Edwards right
at the hash marks. Here she comes. As we watched
the replay, right passed her to Edwards and what a score.

Speaker 14 (41:47):
Oh it was so it was intentional and I think
what the goaltender Fauche thought is that it is going
to go to Sims. But it was a saucer passed
Edwards on the right wing, and so she almost stopped
there and Edwards out of the cross the grain as
Fauchet was going from her right to her left. Beautiful
goal by Edwards.

Speaker 4 (42:06):
Incredible Fauchet. Edwards is on Fauchet's glove side, fires it
back to the blocker side and get the score. And
what a pass from Casey O'Brien. Yeah, and what an
effort from Sims to be in just the right place.
Used as a decoy to confusing the call tender. Yeah,
it's too nothing Wisconsin. And here comes Wisconsin on the
charge again. Finley McCarthy the freshman to the outer Hashmark's
feet across the slot, bounces all the way to the

(42:27):
far wall. Jungle steps up and pinches controls top of
the circle. Shot to flect it up over the cage
comes near side. Now Badger's still on the attack with
Harvey in the near quarter, works beneath the net, turns
it around looking for Halverson. Halverson thought about a one timer.
Harvey excuse me, gets it to the center point for
McCarthy in the slot, but her shot is deflected away
by the defense of Minnesota State. It's behind Minnesota State's nets.

(42:50):
Now the mavericks Gatormpson trying to skate it clear, can't
get it clear. Once again McCarthy getting in the way,
using those two big legs to block a clearing pass.
And here she comes up on the left wing edge.
She takes a little bit of a bump from the
sugar and loses control.

Speaker 14 (43:03):
You know what's impressive bout McCarthy is you can put
her in any time with any line mates, in any situation,
and she usually does the right thing. Consistently. I'm so
impressed with her, Kelly physically and just mentally the way
she plays.

Speaker 4 (43:17):
Gorbtenko behind the net, takes a feed from Cassie Hall,
works up the near side of the boards. Minute thirty
three to play in this first period, Badger's up two
to nothing out here in Mancato. Now here's Cassie Hall,
high slot feet across for Lady Potter. It's off the
back of her stick and carried away by Minnesota State.
Badger's regather, excuse me and neutral ice. Ava Murphy rimmed around,

(43:39):
comes to the near side of the Minnesota State zone
where Gazdik has it up the near wall and back
into set her ice. Gorbatenko there hassled by the fore
check that time, excuse me of o Tremba, but the
Badgers re enter. It's Lacy Eden on the left wing,
Ava Murphy in the center point. Now Lady Potter on
the outer Hashmark's near side. Cassie Hall drops a pass

(44:02):
off feet across from En, right out of the reach
of Ava Murphy. She retreats to the point. Murphy drops
one off. There was nobody there though, and so saying
able to clear.

Speaker 14 (44:10):
It back hand drop pass I'm not a big fan of.
We came out of it okay there, but that usually
ends up being a turnover.

Speaker 4 (44:17):
Lady Potter will sendhat high off the glass and into
the Minnesota state zone as she goes for a change.
With just thirty four seconds to go in this period,
Badger's lead to to nothing. A goal from Leyla Edwards
and a goal from Maggie Scandal the scoring for Wisconsin.
Venusio with twenty five seconds to go in her own zone,
circles around finds Picard. Picard is badly hooked as she
goes down there. Col Wow, and we are going to

(44:39):
get a penalty.

Speaker 14 (44:40):
I wondered there. I didn't see anybody's hand up right away,
but you look pretty clear cut from where I was.

Speaker 4 (44:45):
And they call it cross checking whatever you want to
call that. She was badly mugged as she tried to
get around to defend her. So the Badgers will have
seventeen seconds of a power play to close out this
first period. They'll have a minute forty three when they
come back in the second period. That penalty does go again.
It's clear Vickage number twenty five, the sophomore and as
we see the penalty here. Yeah, crosscheck is as good

(45:05):
a call as anything. She put card right on her
duff there. Yeah.

Speaker 14 (45:09):
If you've ever been to a rodeo and watch one
of those caps being roped in the neck, that's what
it looked like from here.

Speaker 4 (45:15):
It was an aggressive play for sure. Badger's on the
power play with fifteen seconds to go. Sims at the
near point off the face off drops it down for
O'Brien bottom of the circle, center point, high slot, Harvey
Shott browking up by the defense of Minnesota State. They
send it down and that will end this first period.
The Badgers out shoot Minnesota State thirteen to one. They

(45:36):
outscore them two to nothing, and that is the tally
as we head into the break. We're going to take
our first break of this first intermission. We'll be back

Speaker 5 (48:12):
Back during the intermission, Paul Brown with Dan Cook, Associate
head coach of Wisconsin Women's Hockey. Dan, just an overall evaluation.
You did it in the first intermission, but just an
overall thought process on this group.

Speaker 9 (48:27):
You know, first of all, we think, you know, we
we we have just very good, down to earth, humble
individuals that have strong work habits, that are good teammates.
A lot of that goes into, you know, creating the
team chemistry that we want, and we believe all six
of those players really.

Speaker 10 (48:48):
Buy into that.

Speaker 9 (48:49):
And I guess the second thing would be the talent
that we're bringing in. I mentioned Adella, Rayah and Charlotte.
I think they're going to come in and be impactful
right away. We might not see Ryot right away just
because she'll be backing up Ava and Chloe maybe but
in the beginning, but they're going to be very impactful

(49:12):
players for this program for four years.

Speaker 10 (49:15):
Nicole Rachel McKenzie.

Speaker 9 (49:17):
Again just fantastic individuals with strong work habits that maybe
not have the impact.

Speaker 10 (49:23):
Right away, but they have the work habits.

Speaker 9 (49:25):
Where they'll grow and I think later in their careers
you're going to be recognizing them quite a bit on
the ice.

Speaker 5 (49:32):
Dan, Wisconsin's had a tremendous amount of scess. So success
with you and the coaching staff and that kind of thing.

Speaker 6 (49:42):
Over the years is real.

Speaker 5 (49:45):
People might think that's a super advantage for the Badgers
because of the tradition, the history. Is that a factor? Seriously?

Speaker 9 (49:52):
Well, yeah, I think you know, a lot of the
players have followed us for quite a few years, so
you know, they're excited by the success that we've had,
you know, but I think a lot of us, myself,
Jackie Mark, Tracy de Kaiser, Cordell, back in the day,
really started the recruiting process and working with players or

(50:18):
identifying players at a younger age and getting to know
them and their families and their coaches and so there's
been a lot of homework into it and a lot
of effort and work. But you know, the success definitely
helps initiate or grab the interests of the younger players
out there.

Speaker 5 (50:38):
Is recruiting tough for these days with all of the
activities and things that are going on. Kids want to play,
they can transfer that kind of thing. Is it a
more difficult situation than it used to be?

Speaker 9 (50:49):
Yeah, there's some more difficulty with it. We've been fortunate
where unlike men's hockey or football or basketball, we're not
quite dealing with the nil as much as they are.
That will be coming, I'm assuming, so we'll have to
adapt to that.

Speaker 10 (51:08):
And then you know, yes, you know, when.

Speaker 9 (51:09):
You recruit a lot of top heavy players, they all
want to play. They come from their programs where they
play in all situations. They'll play late in the game,
if the goalie is poll they'll play, power play, penalty kill,
and so you know, it comes down to having good
communication and good conversations with the players and trying to

(51:31):
help them be patient, try to help them enjoy the journey.
And sometimes that's easier said than done, but that's all
part of our business and it's part that as coaches
we all enjoy because we're trying to shift those puzzle
pieces around and fit them in together and hopefully you
get rewarded at the end of the season.

Speaker 5 (51:52):
Yeah, you take a team like this and we're obviously
you can roll four lines, you're very deep defensively and
that kind of thing. And as you mentioned, everybody wants
to play and keeping twenty or twenty two, twenty three
people happy that can be a difficult thing, right.

Speaker 10 (52:08):
Oh, definitely, definitely.

Speaker 9 (52:10):
And again it's about communicating with maybe the younger players
you know that came you know, from Shattocks or Chicago
missions or you know Tobaco and Ontario and the Edge School,
and you know, just saying hey, your time will come,
these are the things you need to work on, and

(52:31):
hopefully spending some extra time with them and doing some
video things, they start to see their growth and then
they start to understand.

Speaker 10 (52:39):
The process a little bit. But in the beginning it's.

Speaker 9 (52:41):
A lot of you know, just unknowns, and so that
can create some stress and anxiety for younger players.

Speaker 5 (52:50):
I suppose some people are a little bit surprised. But
you talked about it during the first intermission, so to speak,
that hey, we do go overseas now to recruit. When
you think of hockey in America, there's a lot of
hotbeds of hockey in America and a lot of players
in that kind of thing. But when you expand a horizon,
obviously you're picking up special talent, right.

Speaker 10 (53:12):
Oh, definitely.

Speaker 4 (53:12):
You know.

Speaker 9 (53:13):
You know, one of the things I kind of pride
our program on is you know, I guess we've had
some you know, lines of recruiting certain places, but you know,
we don't focus just on one area.

Speaker 10 (53:28):
If you look at our roster, we have.

Speaker 9 (53:30):
Kids from different provinces of Canada, obviously, we have kids
from many of the different states, and now we're going
to be adding some European countries. So the hockey's continuing
to grow worldwide and I think that's good for the
women's sport.

Speaker 5 (53:45):
And you get to go over there, I understand in
the future. Huh are you heading overseas to recruit a
little bit?

Speaker 9 (53:50):
Yeah, I've been there multiple times in the past, sometimes
work in different camps, not always involved in recruiting, but
heading to Finland in early jan for the U eighteen
World Championships.

Speaker 5 (54:02):
And overall, you guys have obviously done a fabulous job.
This is a fun season, isn't it.

Speaker 9 (54:08):
Oh, it's been remarkable obviously. You know, I believe we're
fifteen and one at the moment or seventeen a one. Yeah,
and so if you would have asked us back in September,
you know, in early December.

Speaker 10 (54:21):
That would be your record, would you take it? And
I'd be definitely yes. But you know, we're still looking
for perfection.

Speaker 9 (54:27):
We're still looking to continue to get better, and the
big thing is to try to keep the girls motivated,
try to keep them competitive.

Speaker 10 (54:39):
Because we realize we're going to get everybody's.

Speaker 9 (54:41):
Best efforts, and so as much as skill is important,
you know, hard work is equally or more important.

Speaker 5 (54:49):
Last question, we were talking with Casey O'Brien and she said,
obviously you never want to lose even a game, but
in retrospect, she said, I think it was a good
thing because it can refocus.

Speaker 10 (55:00):
Oh definitely.

Speaker 9 (55:01):
And you know, losses, as you know, like the cliche goals,
they can be good or bad, and they're only good
as if you look back at them and learn from
them and try to make improvements from that.

Speaker 10 (55:16):
Thanks Dan, you're welcome.

Speaker 4 (57:56):
After one period complete in man Cato, the Badgers lead
to to nothing on top of the Minnesota State Mavericks
and coach. Those two goals to me really represent the
two things that make the Badgers, that give the Badgers
an edge over other teams. The first goal an effort
goal from Maggie Scannal. She's getting held up, hung up,
a killer pass from Kotlowski brings her free. She fights

(58:17):
her way through to get the score. And then the
second goal, who else but Edwards, Sims and O'Brien, Combining
the pass from O'Brien, the forward play and movement from Sims,
and then the shot from Edwards just pretty It's it's
I don't want to say it's perfect, right, You're never perfect,
but it's just how you want it to go. And
those are the two ways the Badgers victimized.

Speaker 14 (58:35):
Teams think, yeah, you're you're spot on. I mean, Scannal
was just her goal was just a lesson in determination
all the way down the ice and Kotlowski seeing her
to begin with, give her that long stretch pass and
that next goal. You know, you got O'Brien coming down
the left wing, you got Sims in the slot, and
you got Edwards on the right wing. And just the

(58:58):
timing of O'Brien's pass, she's so, you know, such a
high hockey iq. She knows right when to time it
and she saucer passes it to Boot. So you can
count on the fact that the goaltender Bauche thought probably
that that past was going to go for Sims, so
she's setting up her weight distribution to field it from there. No,

(59:19):
it goes further over to the Edwards on the right
wing and bang for a goal.

Speaker 4 (59:23):
Beautiful, beautiful shot. She goes against the grain from the
glove side, fires it up into the corner on the
blocker side. Yep. Leila Edwards the four to the month
in the w c CHA along with two of her
teammates getting a Player of the Month honors, Davia mcnatton
Goalie of the Month, Carolyn Harvey Defender of the Month,
and Kirsten Sims is the four of the week. And
it feels like the Badgers collect these honors just with regularity,

(59:45):
and that's because of plays like that.

Speaker 14 (59:47):
Yeah, and I think you know the way they approach it.
It's not like I think they could tell you better
than I themselves. But it's not like it's a I
me me type of thing. It's what they're working on
in practice, what coach Johnson is teaching them and instructing
them to do, and they go out and implement it.
And they know that consistency is critical, and so they

(01:00:11):
just day in day out, they approach it that way
and these are the results, and they're real good.

Speaker 4 (01:00:17):
As we look at the rest of the Badger lineup,
you know, there aren't many players who are going to
be leaving at the end of this season. They've got
a lot of players coming back, but some of the
players who are going are players who could definitely make
it into the pros. And with that in mind, I
had my trivia question for you. Oh so here we
go in thinking, everyone, consider what you think might be

(01:00:37):
the answer to this one. How many former Badgers are
currently playing or coaching.

Speaker 14 (01:00:42):
Professionally Badger women?

Speaker 4 (01:00:45):
Yep, how many bad yes, Badger women, I should say,
how many former Badger women players are either playing or
coaching professionally, these players are split between two different leagues.

Speaker 14 (01:00:55):
Boy, that's for me, that's for you.

Speaker 4 (01:00:59):
And yeah, you give me, give me your best guess
and I'll get you the answer in just a couple
of minutes. Everybody, So you take your team at home
and answer too.

Speaker 14 (01:01:06):
When you say professionally, does Zach collenen as a college
coach or nope?

Speaker 4 (01:01:10):
These people are playing in professional or play women's game?
Yeah in coach okay, exactly, I'm going to say twelve twelve.
All right, so coach Greenhall has twelve. You folks at home,
consider your answers. We got about a minute fifty five
before the second period starts. I will have the answer
for you before we come back. We're out at Mayo
Clinical System Events Center in man Cato, and eighty fans

(01:01:34):
is the capacity of this stadium, so more than twice
the capacity of Lebon, but an awful lot more fans
at Lebon. And you and I were talking, Yeah, it's
really unfortunate that yesterday and today we just don't see
a ton of people out there. You talked about how
last night's game for Wisconsin, yesterday afternoon's game wasn't written
up in the state journal, and I feel like there's
got to be a tipping point somewhere, and I don't

(01:01:55):
know where it is where this team breaks out. The
women's volleyball team, I think has gotten there. They've gotten
over the hump to where they're now just one of
the teams in the city that people talk about. But
the hockey team still just not quite there in terms
of the wider buying from a media and a larger
group of fans that I don't know how we get there,

(01:02:17):
but boy, watching games like this, you sure feel like
they ought to get there, because if you like hockey,
you're watching some great hockey team.

Speaker 14 (01:02:23):
One thing that I wish we could do, and I
don't know if we could. You know, all the games
are listed at Lebon. The home games has sold out.
Many of those are by backers and donors and people
fans that live out of town or whatever. Some in
town but they bought season tickets, but they don't attend
the game, so there's seats. I wish they would continue

(01:02:44):
to sell more seats until it becomes a you know,
a fire limit issue like that. I'm yeah, I'm not
trying to put us in a bad spot, but I'm
just saying, the more people you can get in there
to see the game, the more that they're going to
come back, because they're going to be shocked at the
cal play.

Speaker 4 (01:03:00):
Amen. Speaking of the caliber of play, I asked you
how many former Badgers are playing and coaching professionally. They're
split between two leagues, the PWHL and the Swedish Women's
Hockey League. There are twenty one points I either playing
or coaching up twenty one. Here's bonus points for you.
Which two of them are playing in the Swedish Hockey League.

(01:03:20):
They're both players out in Sweden. I'll let you consider
that as we get the initial draw. Badger's on the
power play to start this second period. They got a
penalty against Minnesota State for cross checking with seventeen seconds
left in the first period, and they will start with
the man advantage. Casey O'Brien through center ice a long
passage just out of the reach of her intended target,
Kirsten Simms, but it's held in by Edwards. Here's Sims

(01:03:41):
at the top of the opposite circle, sets up on offense.
As she comes to the center point, Sims distributes behind
her for Carolyn Harvey back to Sims top of the
far circle. Down load for O'Brien, and she'll switch Harvey
near point. Badger's on the attack nineteen twenty eight to
go Badger's on the power play. Edward's top of the
circle drops down low. Eden feeds across and just out

(01:04:03):
of reach. Harvey now center point back to Sim's opposite circle.
Nineteen seventeen to go fifty nine seconds on the power play.
Harvey settles down a slapper, gives it to Edwards instead.
Near side. Eden behind the net tries a backhanded pass
towards O'Brien. Minnesota State can't clear it past her. Eden
striding Foreygan in the far corner. Battle ensues there up

(01:04:23):
on the wall. Now Minnesota State is able to get
it clear. The Badgers had a lot of possession there
but couldn't get a shot off.

Speaker 14 (01:04:28):
Yeah, let's see if we can convert here. This'd be
a nice way to start the period.

Speaker 4 (01:04:33):
Harvey with the puck with thirty six seconds on the
power play, a head to O'Brien, who will come in
on the right wing edge a shot from the point,
a blocker save right into the slot. Working that time
where the Badgers but a blocker save from lef o'schet.

Speaker 14 (01:04:48):
Yeah, she had a nice sick, a little bit of
a toad drag there to try and to see the
goalie is a nice shot.

Speaker 4 (01:04:53):
Minnesota State able to clear it out now after that
opportunity ten seconds to go on the power play, McNaughton
stops it up behind her net. Badgers look to break out.
Lee lost jungles and she swung over the top the
puck behind the net. She's hassled by Bella Shipley and
the penalty does expire. The Badger's not able to get
anything more than one shot on goal, and Minnesota State

(01:05:14):
kills that penalty off. Badgers, though, du control possession as
they work it into the Minnesota State zone at the
blue line, held in nicely by Cassie Hall to the
far side face off dot now all the way beneath
the net, forced to circle around, feed toward the center
and Maggie Scannal nearly had a tip in. Feed it
to the center again and it's skated away by Minnesota State.
Seventeen fifty to go in the second period, Badger's up

(01:05:36):
two to nothing, Maggie Scandal and Leyla Edwards scoring Minnesota
Channelly at the end of the first period, Badgers wasnavit.
She's got Gorbatenko back can Gorbatenko can't get at it,
and now she's going to take a shove from Jamie
Nelson as Nelson took exception to Gorbatenko going after the puck,
caught up in the pads of Fauchet.

Speaker 14 (01:05:53):
Boy Wise came down the right wing and gain speed.
Did a nice job. Derek comes right along the wall
through the neutral on deek move and Matt hans it
on net.

Speaker 4 (01:06:03):
We saw the replay and Wasnevitch put it through the
skates of the defender. She was moving past a beautiful
bit of stick handling.

Speaker 14 (01:06:11):
Gorbel almost popped into rebound.

Speaker 4 (01:06:13):
Gorbatenko tried to get at it. A nice job by Fauchet.
Suzette Fauchet out of Middleton, Wisconsin, three years of Franklin Pierce,
now in her fifth and final year of eligibility playing
at Minnesota State, kept it out of the back of
the net. Badgers do win the draw, but it's backhanded
clear by Minnesota State on a loose buck was seventeen
twenty to go in the second period, OH Wisconsin's Wasnevitch

(01:06:33):
takes up big hit and center ice from Langseth. Lots
of collisions happening here in the game's starting to get
a little bit more physical. In this second period, Vecki
stumps it into the Badger zone. McNaughton plays it with
the stick for Venusio near side along the wall of
Wisconsin territory for Wisconsin, attempted clearing pass from Enwright is
broken up by Whitney Tuttle. The Badger's able to get

(01:06:54):
it back in the corner. Eva Murphy with it, trying
to take it behind the net. She fights off Tundle,
puts it off the back of the cage and front.
Waznevitch Wasnevitch just passed though, as intercepted by my sugar.
She had the goal last night, a tip in front
and McNaughton has the pads down to make the stop.
And now we do get a will and I think
we may get a penalty here against number seven Whitney Tuttle,

(01:07:16):
the junior. It looked like the ref was signaling, let's
see what the call is.

Speaker 14 (01:07:22):
Yeah, I'm not sure who what's on here, but.

Speaker 4 (01:07:25):
It is no. Ava Murphy is called for roughing, so
Ava Murphy getting the penalty for.

Speaker 14 (01:07:31):
Wisconsin that's her second one of the That.

Speaker 4 (01:07:34):
Is her second. As you said, she was called for interference.
Now she's called for roughing as things got a little
more physical. Let's see if we can find Oh yeah,
she gave a forearm shiver there to Whitney Tundele so
I could.

Speaker 12 (01:07:45):
Well.

Speaker 4 (01:07:45):
Let's see how they got the call.

Speaker 14 (01:07:47):
That never should have happened to begin when we turned
to puck over on a bad pass and they got
a high quality shot and they had somebody right on
the doorstep tipping it and Ava shut the door.

Speaker 4 (01:07:55):
But Badgers do win the draw off of the powerplay
face off and are able to clear it into the
zone of Minnesota State. Badger's control it there. It's going
to be held nicely by Eden, puts it back into
center ice and Carolyn Harvey will skate with it. The
Badgers have Harvey, Jungles, Eden and O'Brien out there on
the PK unit. Send it back into the neutral zone.
Sixteen ten to go in the second period, minute thirty

(01:08:17):
on the power play, and Minnesota State has not enjoyed
a single second of possession in the Badger zone so far.
Cross ice and they'll enter on the left wing side
now they do control it, moving it forward to Zewoski,
drop it back for Langstath tried to clear that one
into center. It's out of their reach and all the
way to on the power play. Fifteen forty six to
go in the second pit. Wisconsin up two to nothing.

Speaker 14 (01:08:40):
I'm gonna have to work out.

Speaker 4 (01:08:41):
How to get away with those penalties.

Speaker 14 (01:08:43):
Like you're defending, but I don't want to get creating
a penalty.

Speaker 4 (01:08:45):
You know. Minnesota State comes in on the right wing
edge of the Wisconsin zone. Leila Edwards and Finley McCarthy
combined to force them back out into the neutral zone.
Two big players there, and they use their size to
their advantage. McCarthy and Edwards puck now back into the
Badger zone behind them, picked up there by Minnesota State.
Feed to the slot is deflected by the stick of McNaughton.
Great stick work from the goaltender to not let that

(01:09:06):
pass through. But Minnesota State set up on offense cross
ice pass is broken up by Katie Kutlowski. She had
a great offensive assist earlier does the scandal goal. Great
defensive play on the penalty kill there and the Badgers
clear it out.

Speaker 14 (01:09:18):
Nice job by that penalty killing unit.

Speaker 4 (01:09:20):
Great work. Fifteen seconds to go on the power play
from Minnesota State, they have it behind their own net
fourteen to fifty to play in the second period. Wisconsin
up two to nothing in this game. With just five
seconds to go, the Badgers will control It's Carolyn Harvey
in her own zone sends it into neutral ice for
Claire Enwright. Both team's full strength as hitting the ice
is Ava Murphy pushed down but getting back up as

(01:09:42):
Mary and Picard. She sends the puck up the near
side of the wall of Minnesota State's zone. Shipley able
to clear it out for the Mavericks at neutral ice,
the Badger sticks interfere. Audrey Garten has to retreat into
her own zone to gather it up from Minnesota State.
Long stretch passes out of the reach of the intended
target and icing will be the call. Let's take thirty
seconds and be back here on Am ten seventy the game.

Welcome Back Everyone. Badgers off of that face off have
the puck in their own zone thirteen fifty seven ago.
In this game, Wisconsin leads two to nothing. Both teams
are even strength and now here comes Kirsten Simms with
Casey O'Brien. O'Brien faceoff dot feed to Sims and an
attempt is saved. Simms got the deflection on but Fauchet
just able to scooch over and cover the pipe.

Speaker 14 (01:10:57):
Real good saved by Fouchet O'Brien with just million dollar
timing on the past to Sims on the back door
on the right side.

Speaker 4 (01:11:05):
They are in such tube with each other they know
just where to be great chemistry. Second line will come
out for the Badger's Cassie Hall along with Lacey Eden
and Goorbtenko face off is one to Gorbatenko in that
far corner haul over to Eden pass broken up Minnesota
State skates it out chip ahead to Zawowski. Badger's in

(01:11:25):
center ice. It's Landy Potter, but Minnesota State able to
force it into the zone behind the net Badger's control.
Gorbtenko one touch to Cassie Hall. Hall accelerates, comes in
on the left wing side of the Minnesota State zone.
Gorbtenko following pushes it into the far corner. Thirteen seventeen
to play in this second period to nothing Wisconsin. Gorbatenko

(01:11:46):
behind the net, puck skated away by Taylor Otremba of
the Mavericks. High off the glass gets past Landy Potter
comes all the way to Badger territory, where Jungles will
have it behind her own net. Drop back for Potter
on the far side of the zone ahead to Gorbite.
It's coming with Eden. She's got Jungles. Jungles all alone,
Hashbarks pass across to Gorbatenko, trying to jam it through

(01:12:06):
Old Dad. They get a whistle and a stoppage and
man Minnesota State unhappy for a second time with Kelly
Gorbtenko delivering a couple of cross checks and shoves.

Speaker 14 (01:12:17):
Jungles made a great pass there. I kind of wish
she would have shot it, but because she's got a
great shot. She's got a really hard and accurate rist shot.
She's just so unselfish though she slid it across for
a good attempt by her teammate there, but not to be.
The puck was loose actually at the end here, but
referee whistled it dead. So here we had that face

(01:12:37):
off here.

Speaker 4 (01:12:37):
I had the same thought you did. I thought Jungles
had a good look at it, but she alects to
make the pass, Fouchet makes the stop. Face off is
controlled by Minnesota State. Over skated in neutral ice and
the Badgers get the pickoff. Here they come the other way,
and right was Nevitch three on one with Murphy shot
in the save. Puck loose in front, wasn't Nevitch there
pushed wide of the cage. Delayed penalty coming up, and
this penalty I believe is going to go against my sugar.

(01:13:00):
Minnesota State Badgers will go on the power play with
twelve thirty two to go in the second period.

Speaker 14 (01:13:05):
Enright just did a great job of gaining speed quickly.
And now there, that's what I'm talking about. She's on
her forehand headed to the net and she shoots it.
The goalie is forced to make us save, can't control
the rebound. We almost had a rebound goal. And then
she got you know, checked from behind her cross checked
on the back Darren.

Speaker 4 (01:13:22):
Yeah, and right, clearly that was an easy call to
make for the referee. He's right there staring at it.
So the Badgers do win the draw off the face
off there on the power play with twelve thirty to go,
they control on the far side of the zone. Sims
to center point for Harvey, Leila Edwards near faceoff dot
Wine drive from Harvey, shot is blocked. Sims comes up
with the loose puck bottom of the circle is Sims

(01:13:44):
looks to distribute behind the net, sends back for O'Brien.
A shot from O'Brien is no good, hit the crossbar
and comes to all the way with the near side.
Great shot Sims around the world thought about a backhanded pass.
Now does drop for O'Brien back to Sims beneath the net.
She's got Edwards. Feed to Edwards, settles it down. Harvey
high slot, works her way in a little lower hashwork
shut man and a goal. Yeah, Carolyn Harvey to the

(01:14:08):
absolute top of the net. It bounds straight back out,
but it crosses the goal line. It's a power play
tally for Wisconsin.

Speaker 14 (01:14:15):
She sidesteps somebody out in the high slot, freezes a
goalie and rips a hard left handed wrist shot over
the glove of the goaltender Fauchet just under the crossbar.

Speaker 4 (01:14:26):
Absolutely great, beautiful goal, assisted by sims and Edwards. And
at eighth three in the second period, the Badgers get
a power play goal. It's their third of the night.
Three nothing Wisconsin with eleven fifty seven to play out
here in Mankato, the draws won by Wisconsin, and there
Sarahwaznevitch and she is hungry to get a score. Feeds

(01:14:47):
to Picard underneath the net, comes back to the face
off top, but Minnesota State's skated away on the near
side of their own zone. Jamie Nelson, the alternate captain
in neutral ized, sends it across in front of the
player benches. Rimmed in hard by Minnesota State, McNaughton stops
it up for Ava Murphy. Badger's with a great one touch.
Here comes to card. She's got a two on two

(01:15:07):
with Waznevitch. The card pushed to the wall, sticks with
it one hand. It sends to the net, but it
hits the side of the cage eleven twenty three to go,
just over the reach of a wide open I believe
Ava Murphy and that one bounced over her stick. Otherwise
she was all alone in the high slot. Has to
retreat all the way to her zone to get it,
but stretches it forward. And here's the freshman Maggie Scandal
who's got one goal already. Backhanded shot nice saved by Fauchet,

(01:15:30):
A low angle shot that Fauchet really had to fight off.
Shipley now coming in on the right wing side of
the Badger zone. Her shot is blocked and it comes
out to neutral ice, where Scannal fights for it, finds
McCarthy with Halverson. McCarthy slot shot is blocked, takes the
glass behind the cage. Ten fifty to play in the
second period, Wisconsin up three to nothing and they are
on the attack.

Speaker 14 (01:15:50):
Yeah, we've got some good ships going here. We're playing
aggressively and I think it's paying.

Speaker 4 (01:15:53):
Off Harvey at the high slot. Her shot doesn't get
through traffic, but Venusio has its center point down low
for Halverson of Wisconsin. Ten thirty five to go in
the second period. Halverson checked off that puck and Minnesota
State turns it the other direction. O Tremba, the junior,
will dump it and get her team a change. As
mcgonton stops it behind the net for the Badgers, Harvey
long stretch pass into center ice, it's tapped by Halverson.

(01:16:16):
She'll go for a change as she clears off the icing.
Twenty one shots on goal for Wisconsin, just two from
Minnesota State in this game. A revitalized Badger defense, and
here's Cassie Hall with a strip as she's forced off
the puck, takes it into the near corner as she
entered the Minnesota State zone. Gorbatenko fighting for it there
against Julianna Gasday. Hall on scene as well as they

(01:16:37):
continue to battle. O Tremba able to send it to
the near side, broken up by Eden and tapped out
of play. We'll get a face off with nine to
fifty three to go, and we will take a short break.
It's Badger Women's hockey on AM ten seventy. The game.

The game starts here.

Speaker 1 (01:17:20):
On Wisconsin all the time. We are WTSO Matterson and
iHeartRadio station.

Speaker 4 (01:17:31):
Welcome back everyone. The second period of action. The Badgers
are up three to nothing against the Minnesota State Mavericks. Coach,
you and I were talking during that break. Badgers look
revitalized today. They didn't exactly look bad yesterday, but they
didn't do some of the things that we're customed them doing.
They're doing everything today.

Speaker 14 (01:17:47):
Right I think. I'm sure coach went over all the
you know, find points that we need to improve on,
and they listen to them, and right now they're implementing
what he had to say. Because we're playing aggressively. Our
passes are a little sharper, we're moving the puck, you know,
we're aggressively for checking and it's paying off dividends.

Speaker 4 (01:18:04):
The word I would use today is relentless. They are
just not giving Minnesota State an inch and showing on
the scoreboard. Cassie Hall and the dot for the Badgers
wins the face off. Lacey Eden, though, can't quite control it,
and now here comes a two on two, potentially a
two on one for Minnesota State. Vivian Jungle says, no way.

Speaker 14 (01:18:20):
Yeah, good Deconhi girl had some good speed going.

Speaker 4 (01:18:22):
Now the loose puck wine drive shot and a save
from Micwell. A pass into the middle just got kind
of lost. Madison Machugar had a chance, but now here
come the Badgers the other way, Lady Potter, Lacy Eden
shot from Eden doesn't go. Gorba Tenco swings over the
top and it is just attack and counter attack here
as the Mavericks and the Badgers are really getting into
it in this second period Wisconsin with Cassie Hall in

(01:18:45):
her own zone on the near side, wall up off
the glass for Gorbatanco. She turns rooms it around and
here's Eden with jungles. Eden shot and a blocker saved
from Fauchet, a confidence save from the Maverick goaltender. Nine
to oh eight to play in the second period. Three
nothing for Wisconsin in this exciting wha battle the last
game of twenty twenty four for the Badgers Minnesota State

(01:19:06):
a shot and it's saved by McNaughton. She's not able
to control the rebound puck up along the far wall
of the Badger's zone. Leila Edwards grabs it with the hand.
A nice clean hand play there, and she enters the
zone up the left wing side, back to herself a
shot at a glove save what has tapped to herself
and then to be able to get that shot on
from Edwards.

Speaker 14 (01:19:24):
Yeah, she comes down the left wing, she's got it
on her backhand, brings it over to her forehand and
flips it up high on the far side far corner,
and the goalie made a great save. Fall She got
her glove up there just in time.

Speaker 4 (01:19:35):
You know who that reminds me of is Darryl Watts.
She could move the pot around like that so easily.
What a play from Edwards helps?

Speaker 14 (01:19:41):
That changes things quickly as far as a goalie where
they want to be.

Speaker 4 (01:19:44):
Sims high slot for the Badger's shot and it's steered
away by the pad of Fauchet once again the goaltender
having to work very hard from Minnesota State in this game,
et cetera. Ice now a one on one chance for
the Minnesota State Mavericks, a blocker saved from McNaughton, the
shot from Jamie Nell's. Then the alternate captain comes in
heart behind the net, finds Nelson again. She's got it

(01:20:04):
far side of the Badger' zone, sends up to the point.
Minnesota State on offense. Seaford a shot from the point
blocked away by the defense of Ava Murphy, Nelson to
the backside for Langsith tried to drop it into the slot,
attempting to find Veckich, broken up by the defense of
the Badgers, and the Badgers are skating it out. Kirsten
Sims near side of the neutral zone. Sims a nice

(01:20:24):
little drop pass for O'Brien, finds edwards top of the circle,
edwards to O'Brien underneath. O'Brien backhanded attempt is broken up
by Zawowski and frozen by Fauchet.

Speaker 14 (01:20:34):
Some nice puck movement Darren that sequence to get it
from one end to the other and finished with a
shot by O'Brien right in tight.

Speaker 4 (01:20:40):
On the goal. Badger's attacking nicely and with seven p
fifty three to go in the second period, they are
firing on all cylinders. Third line out there for Wisconsin
based off one by Minnesota State, and we have a
hand up and I believe this is going to be
a tripping call against Sarahwaznevitch. She went for the puck,
but she cut those out of the Minnesota State carrier

(01:21:02):
that was Juliana Gasdik, and the Badgers will go on
the penalty kill for the third time this game. Tripping
is the call.

Speaker 14 (01:21:08):
Will they send into the box here?

Speaker 4 (01:21:10):
Sarahwaznvitch is the guilty party in this case, and we'll
see the replay. She goes for the puck and ye
cuts the skates out from under an unfortunate miss cue
for the Badgers, and they will have to kill off
two minutes here with Waznevitch in the box, seven fifty
to play in the second period, three nothing, Wisconsin looking
to get their fortieth win of calendar twenty twenty four.

(01:21:31):
Here they have outscored their opponents two hundred and seventeen
to fifty three in this year. Off the face off,
the Badgers do control behind their own net. Harvey grabs
and clears. You can count on Carol and Harvey for
an awful lot of things, and a clear on the
powerplay is one of them. And here's Finley McCarthy with
an aggressive for check nearly grabs a loose puck in

(01:21:52):
the Minnesota State zone, forces them to move things in
a way they didn't intent at their own blue line.
Now Minnesota State brings it up, try to clear and
they can't. Here's lay McCarthy. Oh yep, it was Lacy
Eaton that grabbed the loose puck. McCarthy helping out and
sent her ice. She puts a shot on it'll be
saved by Fouchet and frozen down. The Badgers killed twenty
seven seconds of the power play already, don't allow a shot.

(01:22:14):
And now they get a face off in the Maverick zone.

Speaker 14 (01:22:17):
Yeah, like I said earlier, you know McCarthy. They put
her in different situations and she responds real well in
all of them.

Speaker 4 (01:22:23):
Lacey Eden will take the face off for the Badgers.
Edward's also out there on the PK against LANGSTI than
the dot for the Mavericks face off is one by
Minnesota State Jungles and Harvey the other two players for
Wisconsin as they play a skater down with Waznevitch in
the box for tripping minute twenty three on the power play.
Seven to twelve to go in the second period, three
nothing the lead for the Wisconsin Badgers in their final

(01:22:46):
game of twenty twenty four. Minnesota State far side of
the Badger's zone. Can't get it into the center down low.
Wanted to pass nothing there, send to LANs at the
top of the near circle, cross eye center point back
to lengthstheth that the face off dot thought about a shot,
couldn't do it. Pass goes all the way out of
the zone. They try to center it up and instead
it ends up backing their own territory.

Speaker 14 (01:23:07):
Yeah, they were moving the puck well there, but it
got out of control there for him.

Speaker 4 (01:23:11):
Fifty three seconds to go. As they re entered the
zone carrying this one is Nelson has to circle all
the way around behind the Badgernette, shadowed by Jungles, feed
to center, broken up by Maggie Scannell out there on
the penalty kill. Now Nelson to the high slot takes
a shot again off a skate, doesn't make it anywhere
near Ivan McNaughton thirty four seconds on the power play

(01:23:31):
six twenty two in the period. Shot through traffic and
a pad save from McNaughton, lots of screens in front
of her. She makes a nice stop. Minnesota State still
controls high slot. That time for Gasdick langsett down low.
Minnesota State has had some zone time, but it's cleared
and ended by Carolyn Harvey. Fifteen seconds to go on
this power play.

Speaker 14 (01:23:52):
Yeah, it's nice to have Harvey out there, isn't it
on the penalty kill.

Speaker 4 (01:23:55):
She does so much work for him five on five
and especially four on five. Yeah. Seconds to go on
the power play. As Minnesota State comes in on the
left wing, rim it around to the near side. Badger's
control it there, tip it up that near side wall.
Here comes Gorbtenko as the Badger's are full strength. Was
Nevitch hustling into the zone, got the loose puck as
she's forced to the far corner. Sarah was Nevitch on
the attack along with Gorbtenko. Wasnavitch bottom of the circle

(01:24:17):
feet across. No shot there. Shot from the high slought
is broken up by Claire Vekich and now veckag stick
handling trying to get past Lady Potter. Potter strips it
away from her though in counterattacks Potter coming up with
Cassie Hall and Kelly Gorbtenko try to wrap around shot
and it's saved by Fauchet. With five nineteen to go,
Badger's still on offense, up three to nothing. Here in

(01:24:38):
the second period, Sim's out on the ice now. Gorbtenko
gets the pucket up at the far point. Nice job
to work it down here. Sim's top of the far circle,
face off, Dot circling around. Sim's looking for a pass,
goes cross ice to Murphy at the opposite point. Murphy
feeds down load to Gorbtenko beneath the net. RIM's far side,
Cassie Hall striding there trying to get after it. At

(01:24:59):
the point puck can't be held by Venusio, Sims will
gather in neutral ice four fifty to play. Here comes Sims.
She's got some speed on the right wing side, face
off Dot, feet across, but nobody was there for Wisconsin
four forty three. In the second period, three nothing the
lead for the Badgers. Minnesota State forced to just backhand
it into Wisconsin territory to get some very tired skaters
off the ice. Katie Kutlowski an angle passed to the

(01:25:22):
near side, out of the reach of Claire Enwright. Minnesota
state the other way with Bella Shipley, but Venusio gets
there first, gives to Picard. She'll take it behind the
net to the far side of the Badger' zone.

Speaker 14 (01:25:33):
Strong legs Picard there card pass that other defender.

Speaker 4 (01:25:37):
Some nice skating. Picard gets hassled up against the wall
that time by Gatormsen and they're able to separate her
from the puck. Move it to Shipley, who tips it
in on the near side of the Badger' zone. Venusio
all over her though she has the puck. She skates
to the far side of Badger territory.

Speaker 14 (01:25:53):
Nice played by Venusio there.

Speaker 4 (01:25:54):
Looking good as she finds Lela Edwards in neutral ice.

Speaker 14 (01:25:58):
I like the way we're We're not making so much
much work out of breaking the puck out of our
zone today' zach. It's nice to see that improvement.

Speaker 4 (01:26:04):
Yep, absolutely keeping things nice and clean for McNaughton. She's
only faced three shots in this whole game. There are
three forty four three minutes and forty four seconds left
to play in the second period, Wisconsin is up three
to nothing. Puck has poked up the far side of
the Minnesota state zone. Edwards can't quite control and it's
skated ahead by the Mavericks, this time in the person
of Alexis padding today a long shot about a sixty

(01:26:25):
foot there. McNaughton able to make the stop three twenty
five to go. Badger's controlling their own zone. It's Jungles
on the near side. O'Brien finds Eden on the near
side of the Minnesota state zone as she enters, but
Ethannett puck taken away from her Minnesota State defense, has
it up the far wall. Halverson, though is able to

(01:26:46):
tap it towards the point, grabbed up by Jamie Nelson
though two on two for Nelson as she finds Madison
with sugar backhand from a sugar ends up behind the Badger.
Nette loose puck gathered by Jungles pass from Jungles is
out of the reach of the intended target. Casey O'Brien,
I'm not sure O'Brien actually saw that one. Yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:27:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (01:27:03):
The only person not looking for that past is well Brian.

Speaker 4 (01:27:06):
Two fifty to go in this second period, Badger's up
three to nothing. Now Here comes O'Brien on the left
wing side, feed into the slot intended for Carolyn Harvey.
She has to take it to the far corner. Feed
into the slot again for McCarthy, but broken up by
the defense of Minnesota State. Now here's Hannah Halverson, who's
got control. Finds McCarthy at the bottom of the fire circle.
McCarthy's shoulders are way past a defender drops the puck

(01:27:27):
off feed towards center. Broken up once again by Jamie Nelson,
the alternate captain, the junior for them out of andover Minnesota,
a graduate student. She's having a lot of important impacts
on this game. Pucking the near side of the Badger zone.
With two thirteen to go in the second period, Wisconsin
hanging on to that three to nothing lead, playing extremely
well tonight. Hannah Halverson enters the zone on the right

(01:27:49):
wing side. Scannal and Finley McCarthy give chase behind the net.
Halverson steps up in the far corner minute fifty eight
to go. Minnesota State able to tap it clear and
break things out on the rush is Paddington. He's a
head to Audrey Garten behind the net boy badger bodies,

(01:28:09):
Minnesota State bodies hitting the ice. Lots of collisions here,
but McCarthy comes up the better of it. She's got
control feed scan all moving through neutral ice. Who will
backhand and get a change. The Freshman line heads off
and Minnesota State controls beneath their own net. Long pass
to the right wing side of the badger zone. They
accelerate it all the way behind the Wisconsin net Venusio
sends it to the far wall for badgers to pick up.

(01:28:31):
Was Nevitch able to grab in front of the Minnesota
State bench. A pass to enright is intercepted by the Mavericks,
sent back down on net for McNaughton, who easily controls
Picard in center ice. Got a couple of skaters waiting
for it the blue line. She comes in on the
right edge, rims it around to the near side. Was
Nevitch coming up for it, puts some pressure on that

(01:28:52):
near wall, forces Minnesota State to turn the other direction.
It's Goldsworthy in her own zone up towards the point wind.
A dry from katloud Ski kind of a bouncing knuckle
puck bounces wide of the cage, Picard on her knees,
backhand towards Enwright on the near wall, en right, supported
by Venusio, they continue to fight for it. Claire Enwright
sends it towards the net. Forty seconds to go in

(01:29:13):
this period, still three nothing Wisconsin out at center ice.
Venusio gets it cleanly one handed, enable to backhand it
briefly into the Minnesota State zone, putting pressure on was
O'Brien there. O'Brien Sims and Edwards out here for the
final thirty seconds of this period. Three nothing. In the
second McNaughton's going to stop this one up that came
lightly to her. Nette Venusio controls off the glass trying

(01:29:36):
to find O'Brien. She gathers in front of the Badgernette.
Nice play with the skate blade turned it over though
at the blue line. Twelve seconds to go. As Minnesota
State tries for one less offensive possession, they're going to
be off sides there. We do get a whistle and
a stoppage with six point six seconds to go, Three
nothing Wisconsin here in the second period.

Speaker 14 (01:29:54):
Yeah, we're moving the puck pretty well here five one
five For a while after we killed off our third
p only in the game earlier in this period.

Speaker 4 (01:30:02):
Very very fast Game two, as you had mentioned earlier, Yeah,
this one's going by quick. Six point six seconds to go.
Badgers win the face off into their own zone. Harvey
will just stop it up behind the net and settle
things down to end the period. So after two complete,
it's Wisconsin three, Minnesota State zero. Wisconsin has outshot Minnesota
State twenty six to six in this game. It has

(01:30:24):
been an incredible performance from these Badgers so far.

Speaker 14 (01:30:27):
Yeah, that shot stat is pretty one sided, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (01:30:32):
And five of those shots came in this period. The
Badgers held Minnesota State to one shot in the first
only five in this second. We're going to take a
short break. We'll be back with more on the intermission show.

Mark green Hall with You in Studio and Madison the
Badgers are on the Road in man Cato taking on
the Minnesota State Mavericks and they enjoy a three to
nothing lead so far, Coach, that period was incredibly fast
for one, very few stoppages, a lot of action. The
Badgers had a powerplay goal Harvey from Sims and Edwards

(01:33:36):
and it was as it always is. It feels like
with those players, just a thing of beauty at gorgeous score. Yeah.

Speaker 14 (01:33:43):
Yeah, it was a fast one, you know. I think
what we had two penalties that or one penalty to
kill that period?

Speaker 4 (01:33:49):
We had two? Yeah, they had one to we capitalized.
We had to kill off two and we killed them
off both. Yep.

Speaker 14 (01:33:54):
But we're moving the puck well. We're aggressively for checking,
which is nice to see. I think our breakouts are
a little less problematic.

Speaker 10 (01:34:04):
You know.

Speaker 14 (01:34:04):
We're making smart, simple decisions, taking what they give us
and moving it up and out of the zone quickly.
So that's nice to see.

Speaker 4 (01:34:11):
One player I want to mention you and I mentioned
her at different points during that period, Finley McCarthy. We're
seeing her out there a lot more. I feel like
we're seeing a lot of the freshmen contributing more. Emma
Venusio as well, but McCarthy is really interesting because she's different,
I think from a Sims and O'Brien. Yeah, she's a
bigger player and she uses that size very, very effectively.

(01:34:34):
You know. You can think of sometimes like you call
someone a big player and you're thinking of them it's
just sort of like a goon, And it's not that
at all. She is able to use her size advantage
to get opponents out of the way, give herself some
open space, and she's done a lot of damage for
Wisconsin on both sides of the ice.

Speaker 14 (01:34:50):
Yes, she has any as I said earlier, in any
situation she handles it well. Her size is certainly a bonus.
But another thing she does is she reads the play well.
Watch her without the puck. She always finds herself in
the right spot on the ice, and it's not by accident.
She's reading the play, responding accordingly and always puts herself

(01:35:13):
in the most optimum position to give our team benefit.

Speaker 4 (01:35:17):
There's another badger of Finley that I want to talk about.
Rather than Finley McCarthy, we go over to the men's side.
Quinn Finley had two goals yesterday in their game against
number one Michigan State, who they defeated four to nothing.
How about the badger Men having some real success.

Speaker 14 (01:35:30):
Yeah, it's nice to see him. They didn't get down
earlier or in the season where they had either you know,
a couple of games where they lost by a goal
or they lost in overtime. They've stuck with what they
know will get them to the right spot and they're
you know, it's starting to pay off for him. And
to upset the number one seeded team currently in the
nation that by a ford to nothing score was pretty impressive.

(01:35:51):
And that Quinn Finley. I remember seeing him as when
he played juniors for the Capitals, and geez, he looked
like about a twelve year old.

Speaker 10 (01:35:59):
You know.

Speaker 14 (01:35:59):
He was a you know, pretty not diminutive, isn't right where,
but he was a pretty small guy or relatively flair
and he he didn't let that intimidate him. He would
go along, play hard along the wall. He would go
in front of the net in the greasy spots. And
I said, man, when he matures and fills out and

(01:36:21):
works on strength and conditioning, he's just going to be
forced to see it because I saw his dad. His
dad looks like the Hams Bear, you know, so I know,
he's got a good future ahead of him. He's and
he's just he's really, you know, incredible two goals last night.
It's just indicative of that.

Speaker 4 (01:36:36):
Hams, you don't sponsor us, but give us a call. Yeah.
So yeah, coming back to this game and speaking of
players and assessing the players, as you look at the
three goals the Badgers have had, they've they've looked the
sharp goals. Nonetheless, we saw Haley Hanson the net yesterday,
as you've seen Fauchet working today. Do you think that

(01:36:57):
this was a wise choice to go with her? Do
you think Hanson might have had more success or are
these goals that were just going to get by whoever
was in that there.

Speaker 14 (01:37:04):
I'm impressed with Fauchet. I don't think they made a
mistake putting her in there, and that doesn't slight yesterday's
netminder Hanson at all. You know, I'm impressed with both
of them. But Blache is holding up her into the
bargain today.

Speaker 4 (01:37:16):
You know, she's had to face an awful lot of
shots twenty six shots so far through two periods, and
they've adjusted the stats here only four shots on goal
for Minnesota State, So they actually really went away there.
I thought I've got a few.

Speaker 14 (01:37:31):
As I take notes, I thought they had five.

Speaker 4 (01:37:33):
Anyway, well, you and I have been questioning some of
the official scoring because in the first period the goal
for Maggie Scannal, they did list it out as unassisted
and they have updated that. Speaking of updates, so credit
to the official corus. They did give Katie Katlowski.

Speaker 14 (01:37:47):
I'll give I'll never give you a bum steer there, no, no.

Speaker 4 (01:37:51):
And we both felt like she deserves it on that one.
She it was a tremendous play to break Scannal free,
and then Scannal fought her way past the defender to
get that score. What do you think is different for
the Badgers? And I don't mean like a strategy sense,
but you've been watching this team for a long time,
not just these players, but the Badger hockey program in general.

(01:38:11):
There's a there's a certain feel or a vibe to
use the current term, that you get when you watch
a hockey team. It didn't feel like the vibe was
quite there yesterday. It feels like it's there in spades today.
What what is different about them? What what's that feeling
like in the locker room or on the bench. How
can you tell that as a coach?

Speaker 14 (01:38:29):
Well, you know, I think they're they're all human. And
if you march along like they have this year and
you have success, I think it's human nature to kind
of just go, Okay, we'll go out.

Speaker 4 (01:38:39):
And play again.

Speaker 14 (01:38:40):
And and you know, you may not focus as uh,
you knows as much as you have to or requires
to do what you need to do well. And so
I'm sure that that they were reminded of that in
a little meeting before today's game, you know, maybe last
night after the game or when they reviewed video. And uh,

(01:39:00):
And it's not like we're doing a lot wrong. We're
doing a lot of things well, but there's a couple
things that we need to clean up. And they've done that,
they've responded to that, and their breakouts are an example
of it in and of itself. You know, we're starting
to make better passes and not turning it over as
often in the neutral zone or in our own end.

Speaker 4 (01:39:20):
One more coaching question. I'll ask you something you hear
from a lot of coaches, but I feel like Wisconsin
has known for this is the idea that you're never perfect.
There's always something you can do to improve always a
lesson you can take from even the best game. When
players come to you new, when they're coming from their
high school or their junior's teams wherever they play it,
and they're starting new as a badger, is it difficult

(01:39:42):
for players to maybe take that lesson on right away?
Is there something you have to do to work with
them to get them to understand that it's to say
that it's never good enough. Is not to say that
they're not playing well, just that you can always try
and improve. And do you have to get people into
that mindset or do they come feeling that way given
how effective they've been at the lower level.

Speaker 14 (01:40:00):
Well, I think it's a matter of you know, you
try and help them with the adjustment from wherever they
came from to the WCHA. You know, that's a big
leap for anybody, and they're used to having success wherever
they came from in the pastor usually the best players
from their respective areas. So what I think we as
coaches have to help them deal with is, hey, if

(01:40:21):
it isn't working right away, don't get down, But here's
the adjustments you have to make. You know, maybe things
are a little faster, or maybe you got to move
the puck a little quicker.

Speaker 4 (01:40:30):
You know.

Speaker 14 (01:40:30):
Just they're not huge things, but they are adjustments that
make a big difference. So we just kind of point
those out to them, help them identify those areas that
they can, you know, have improvement, and they usually respond
pretty well excellent.

Speaker 4 (01:40:44):
And then just before we go, we have the bonus
part of our trivia question. There are twenty one Badgers
playing and coaching professionally right now. Nineteen of them are
in the PWHL, but two of them are in the
Swedish Women's Hockey League. Do you know who those players are?

Speaker 14 (01:40:59):
I think I do. I thought there was three. I've
got Maddy Posik is one.

Speaker 4 (01:41:04):
Posik is one of them, Brian Posik's daughter.

Speaker 10 (01:41:06):
And uh.

Speaker 14 (01:41:10):
Britt Pettitt would be the other one.

Speaker 4 (01:41:11):
Brett Pettitt is the other. Oka is the second player.

Speaker 14 (01:41:14):
There was a third for a while, Alexis Maherman, but
I think she just retired.

Speaker 4 (01:41:19):
I think she didn't. I don't think she is playing
any longer. So you're right that Alexis Maheran did play,
so you get extra extra credit there.

Speaker 14 (01:41:25):
I think I'm just a fountain of knowledge.

Speaker 4 (01:41:29):
That is exactly the word I would use boy, so
I hope you joined with us. The folks on that
trivia twenty one former Badgers that are playing professionally now
in either the Professional Women's Hockey League or the Swedish
Women's Hockey League. That is the kind of thing you're watching.
When you're watching this team play, you are watching future pros,
future stars give it they're all and play at an
incredibly high level. We're going to take a break and

(01:41:51):
we'll be back with the rest of the intermission show.
The Badgers have one more period to play and they
enjoy a three nothing lead over Minnesota State. It's Badger
Women's Hockey on AM ten seventy. The game.

This is ten seventy the game.

Speaker 4 (01:44:04):
Welcome back everyone to the intermission show. The Badgers are
up three to nothing on Minnesota State. They have traveled
to Mankato for what will be their final game of
this twenty twenty four calendar year. They of course have
half a season less to go as a winter sport,
ice hockey crosses over the year boundary, and the Badgers
will next be in action January second at Lebon versus
Ohio State, and then January fourth at Wrigley Field versus

(01:44:27):
Ohio State. An exciting series there and an important series coach.
If the Badgers win this game, they will be thirteen
points up on Ohio State, and that puts them in
a position where if they defeat Ohio State in both
of those games there. You know, the season isn't over,
but it feels like they will have put themselves very
solidly in the driver's seat for the WCCHA regular season title.

Speaker 14 (01:44:49):
Yeah to win. You know that first game is at
home at lebon on the second, I believe, and then
on the fourth that's Saturday down at Wrigley. Those are
both critical games. We could do ourselves a big favor
by putting one or two of those in the win
column for us.

Speaker 4 (01:45:04):
And as we look over at excuse me at the
scoreboard here and let me just see if I can
pick it back up. So yesterday a lot of women's
hockey teams in action. Number three Minnesota defeated Saint Thomas
five to nothing. A tie between Minnesota, Duluth and Saint
Cloud State went to a shootout, and I'll see if
I can get you the results of that shootout. Number

(01:45:26):
six Clarkson took down Dartmouth five to three. Boston College
fell to Holy Cross in overtime. Two won the win
for holy Cross, an upset of number ten. Boston College.
Saint Lauris number eleven in the country, beat Harvard four
to two. Boston University over Main three to one, Penn
State took down Mercyhurst four to two, Yale over Union
three to one, Yukon over New Hampshire two to one,

(01:45:47):
Post defeated Sacred Heart three nothing. Franklin Pierce, who is
Suzette Fauchet, the goaltender form Minnesota State today, that is
her former college. They won five nothing over Saint Michael's.
Vermont close against Merrimack, but they won two to one
in a wild affair with Lyndon Wood nine to four,
a high scoring affair there, rensel Air four to one
over Brown, Assumption two to one over stone Hill, and

(01:46:08):
Syracuse four to one over Robert Morris. And as we
look at the shootout details here and just trying to
find the final the final score in Saint Cloud State
versus Minnesota Duluth as to who got the shootout win,
Unfortunately I don't have it right away. That's another interesting
one there with Minnesota Duluth being right behind Ohio State

(01:46:29):
and the WHA standings.

Speaker 14 (01:46:31):
Yeah, Duluth is good. Like I say, Saint Cloud State, Duluth,
Ohio State. Those are four you know, those are three
teams right there. That and then the Minnesota golfers as
always there's four teams right there that they could beat
you anytime if you don't have your a game on.

Speaker 4 (01:46:49):
Other teams in action in women's hockey so far, Clarkson
and Harvard are playing their second game. Clarkson up four
to one in the third period of that game, Saint
Lawrence two nothing over Dartmouth. Also in the third period.
Syracuse at the end of two is leading Robert Morris
three to one. Union is four to one over brown
Out in the New York in the second period, and
Rental Year over Yale three to one at the end

(01:47:10):
of the second Minnesota and Saint Thomas will match again
at six pm. Duluth defeated Saint Cloud today three to one,
so d Luth getting that win there. Penn State also
defeats Mercy Hurst and Franklin Pierce over Saint Michael's. So
as we see the teams heading back out onto the
ice here, we did get another adjustment in the shots
on goal. We're now calling it twenty six for Wisconsin
and six for Minnesota State. The face offs are a

(01:47:33):
little closer than they were yesterday. One area where the
Badgers really excelled yesterday was faceoff wins. They had quite
an advantage today they've won nineteen and Minnesota State has
won thirteen. But the Badger's relentless and basically every other phase,
and if we had time of possession details, I feel
like it would be heavily tilted toward Wisconsin.

Speaker 14 (01:47:50):
Yeah, we're we're getting a puck on our stick and
we're keeping it on there worth more so than yesterday,
not as many turnovers, and you know, kind of eliminated
some of those miss.

Speaker 4 (01:48:00):
Badgers are obviously going to stick with Ava McNaughton in
net and Suzette Fauchet will remain in net for Minnesota State.
The Mavericks trail three to nothing here in this third
and final period, as we get ready to get things started,
it'll be Casey o Tremba against Casey O'Brien, I'm sorry,
not Casey O Tremba. Taylor O Tremba against Casey O'Brien
in the faceoff dot to get us underway.

Speaker 14 (01:48:22):
You know, even with this twenty twenty shot differential, I
still feel like, yeah, you're not out of the woods.
You got to keep Avian McNaughton in there, and you know,
on those kind of things, we got twenty minutes of
hockey yet to play.

Speaker 4 (01:48:34):
Yeah, and we've seen Minnesota state what they can do
with just a single slip up. You're definitely want wants
your stud goaltender in the back there. The Badgers do
win the initial draw and we are underway in the
third and final period. Leila Edwards has it knocked off
her stick. It comes back behind the Badger zone, back
behind the Badger cage rather where it'll come loose to
Ava Murphy. A nicely pass finds O'Brien. She gets Edwards

(01:48:55):
and O'Brien in a one on two feed to O'Brien.

Speaker 8 (01:48:57):
Shutting the score.

Speaker 4 (01:49:00):
There's just twenty two seconds in a two on one
chance on Laila Edwards to Casey O'Brien. She buries it.
It's four nothing, Wisconsin.

Speaker 14 (01:49:08):
Just a beautiful pass you got Edwards on her off
wing on the left side and O'Brien coming down the slot.
Or was it yeah, O'Brien coming down the slot and
just bangle. Perfect pass by Edwards.

Speaker 4 (01:49:22):
Absolutely beautiful score there and Edwards to O'Brien. The Badgers
get it. Carolyn Harvey gets the secondary assist for breaking
it up out of the zone and into neutralized to
find Edwards. The Badgers will get a quick line change
after a quick goal and they lead four to nothing. Here,
Lacy Eden off the face off, gets around traffic, goes
to the bottom of the circle. Backhand shot is blocked
up high into the sky, picks it up as it

(01:49:44):
comes back to earth. With nineteen twenty eight and counting
to go, and we have a delayed penalty coming. This
will be against Minnesota State. Oh boy, Julianna Gastick is
going to go to the box and the Badger's quickly
with a second opportunity just thirty five seconds in to
this third period.

Speaker 14 (01:50:00):
I'm sure the man Cato coaches weren't expecting to start
the period this way.

Speaker 4 (01:50:05):
This is quite a reversal for Minnesota State after having
so much success yesterday playing the Badgers to a very
tight to one game that the Badgers came out on
top of. It's for nothing Wisconsin. Now after the Case
O'Brien goal and Julianna Gastik gets called for cross checking. Here,
let's see the hit on Lacy Eden yep, and another
clear cross check. Badgers win the draw in Minnesota State territory,

(01:50:26):
but the Maverick's able to grab it and clear it
out comes all the way down the near side boards,
where Carolyn Harvey will have it in the Badger's zone.
Minute forty five on the power play, Leila Edwards through
center for O'Brien. Buck is tapped and up out of play,
hit the glove of one of the bench players for
Minnesota State take a face off just outside of the zone.

Speaker 14 (01:50:44):
I like the way when Harvey went back to retrieve
the puck after minute Mankato threw it down on our end.
She just quick turned, who do I have?

Speaker 4 (01:50:50):
Open?

Speaker 14 (01:50:51):
Boom up ice right away.

Speaker 4 (01:50:52):
I like that. Badgers win the draw. It's Harvey back
in her own zone. She hit Sims initially comes back
to her find Sim on the near side. Badgers all
the way deep in their territory. Minute and a half
on the power play, minute twenty eighteen fifty two. Excuse
me to go in this period. Here's Edwards now on
the right wing. Edwards finds Eden a shot from me
in the save. It bounces over the stick of O'Brien,

(01:51:13):
who was right in position to grab the rebound but
couldn't quite grab it out of mid air, Sims down
beneath the net, back to Sims top of the circle,
She works down to the bottom and comes beneath the
net herself. Skates to the far side. Minute six on
the power play, as Sims continues to control one touch,
finds Harvey center point Edwards at the left face off dot.

(01:51:34):
Edwards can't quite control it and Minnesota State attempts at
clearing the second one will be good. Rosky put the
pressure on that did not allow them to take control.
But now here's Sims. As she gets a long stretch
past enter the zone, stops up on the near wall,
finds O'Brien down in the corner. Outer Hash marks Sims
at the center point. Thirty nine seconds on this power play,

(01:51:56):
Vivian jungles top of the circle shot blockers save from
fo shit near side wall for the Badgers. Sims gets
it again to O'Brien. She's supported there by Maggie Scannal,
she had the first goal in this game. Scannal tries
a one handed pass, stripped away from her by Minnesota State.
O'Brien assists Minnesota State controls in their own corner. O'Brien
holds it on that near wall up to the point

(01:52:19):
for Lady Potter. As O'Brien goes for a change. Cassie
Hall with it just ten seconds to go on the
power play, four nothing Badgers here in the third period,
haul down beneath the net, feed in towards center. Crashing
the net was Gorbatenko and she scores. If they have
tried that twice this game, they couldn't get it to go.
This time they do manage to get it to find
the back of the net. The Badgers get the power

(01:52:40):
play goal, which is three seconds left on the penalty,
and let's see this replay. Hall beneath the net sends
it through Gorbtenko. There it came to Scannal. It went
off the skate of Goorbatanko to Scandal on the low
slot and Scandal with her second goal of the night.

Speaker 14 (01:52:54):
That was just a beautiful pass from uh Cassie Hall
from the deep in the right, you know, below the
right circle, right into the slot, like you said, off
the skate of Garbatenko.

Speaker 4 (01:53:06):
And now though we do have an official review, and
I think they're going to check for goalie interference on
this one, so we're gonna have to stand by. We'll see. Currently,
the goal is credited to Maggie Scandal with assists from
Kelly Grbatenko and Cassie Hall Hall with the pass that
set that up. It was Gorbtenko that's crashing the net

(01:53:27):
originally as we see her come in Garbitenko, I don't
actually think Gorbitenko touched it, and now you don't think
she interfered with either.

Speaker 14 (01:53:35):
What they might call is Garbtenko preceding the puck into the.

Speaker 4 (01:53:40):
Crease into the blue paint.

Speaker 14 (01:53:42):
That could be and they they may avoid the goal
on that grounds.

Speaker 4 (01:53:47):
But we'll see, we'll have to see.

Speaker 14 (01:53:49):
It's kind of almost a judgment call that was so close,
and you know you're trying to okay, Tod the puck
come in from this angle into the crease prior to
this player's eight being in the blue paint or not,
you know.

Speaker 4 (01:54:03):
While they do that review, let's take a short break.
We'll be back here on Am ten seventy the game.

Speaker 24 (01:54:07):
I'm Senior Master Sergeant Steve Veers, and I'm Min First
Class Isaac Fears.

Speaker 22 (01:54:11):

you serve. We understand what it takes to prepare, indoor
and prevail. Please accept this red, white and blue holiday salute.

Speaker 8 (01:54:37):
This is ten seventy the game.

Speaker 4 (01:54:42):
Welcome back everyone. We're still at an official review seventeen
twenty seven ago in the third period. At the moment,
it is five nothing Wisconsin thanks to the power play
tally from Maggie Scannal. But the officials are taking a
look at this one here checking for potentially goal and
interference or an early entry into the crease on the
part of Elly Gorbtenko coach. I was looking at the
stants to see. I didn't know if this was the

(01:55:03):
first multi point game for Maggie scandal. It turns out
not only is it her not her first multipoint game,
it won't be her first multi goal game. She had
two goals against Minnesota Duluth as a freshman. She has
just had an outstanding first season, first half of the
first season.

Speaker 14 (01:55:18):
So yeah, she came out gangbusters. I was really impressed
by her and I continue to be so. But like
I said, that injury put her on the shelf for
a while and it takes a while to come back
from that scandal.

Speaker 4 (01:55:29):
Right now, with seven goals and one assist coming into
this game, she would have nine goals in an assist
assuming this goal does not get overturned on the video review.
All three of the freshman forwards Halverson, McCarthy and Scannal
have been outstanding. Venusio has been outstanding and the three
who we haven't seen yet a ton of time, Bickett,

(01:55:50):
Vassar and Zillish have also taken advantage when they've gotten
some ice time.

Speaker 14 (01:55:53):
Yup, They've contributed when they have the opportunity. So it's
nice to just have all that depth. Well, they are
taken a while to aren't they.

Speaker 4 (01:56:00):
They sure are And now referee are one of our
two referees hoils along with Bradshaw. They've taken off the headsets,
putting their helmets back on and we will get the
call here. See what the verdict is. Yeah, my hope
is that this one counts. My stat sheet has not
indicated that it doesn't. We have a good goal. He
points at the dot, and we have a good goal.
So the Badgers get a score. Maggie Scannal her second

(01:56:23):
of the game on the Cassie Hall pass, assists from
Gorbatenko and Scannal crashes the net and puts it away.
It's five nothing Wisconsin on the power play.

Speaker 14 (01:56:33):
Tally Wow, they took a while reviewing that, didn't they They.

Speaker 4 (01:56:35):
Really were looking close, so I don't know what the
issue was that they potentially were considering. But off the
face off the Badger's control up five to nothing. Here
in the third and final period in man Cato, the
final period of twenty twenty four for Wisconsin, loose puck
is nearly picked up by n Right, but it goes
off her skate and comes out into neutral ice. Badgers
have to set back up on offense. Puck on the

(01:56:56):
near side. Here's Picard, She's got Wasnevitch with her. She
comes up the near one, rimmed around to the opposite
side for enright behind the net, pe car trying to
dig it out. She's got it into the far corner.
Now with sixteen fifty six to go in the third period.
She's pushed hard to the ice. En Right rims it
the opposite way that one's gonna come up the near wall.
Lady Potter stepping up to get it, along with Waznevitch

(01:57:17):
battling with Whitney Tuttle. All three Badger forwards are onseen
trying to dig this one off the wall along with
Lady Potter.

Speaker 14 (01:57:24):
Now there's six people along the wall there.

Speaker 4 (01:57:26):
Puck is just stuck. Yep, nobody can get it free.
Now it does break, loose comes to the corner where
to be taken by Jaden Seaffert of Minnesota State. Up
towards the blue line. Enwright intercepts the pass, puts it
right back into the Maverick zone. Neutral Ized loose puck
gabbler by Lady Potter top of the near circle. Potter
tries to feed it ahead for Cassie Hall. She tracks

(01:57:46):
it down behind the net and instead the loose puck
is picked up by Madison, with Sugar of Minnesota State
immediately swatted away by Eva Murphy and Hall coming the
other way. Cassie Hall, through four different defenders, holds on
puts it off the glass, gets it down beneath the
where the Badger's control. Trying to get a shot on there.
I believe was Carolyn Harvey, but the loose puck does

(01:58:07):
come out all the way. No, was Lacy Eaton? Excuse
me Eden behind the net there? Now it's Gorbutenko in
the near corner. Gorbtenko, hazzled drops it off for Eden.
She tries to trade it for Hall. Corbtenko a quick
shot and it is saved, but the play continues. Nice
saved by Fauchet off the Gorbtenco tip. Cassie Hall with

(01:58:29):
another great pass. Now Minnesota State, trying to get some
z own time in the Badger zone, has to dump
it and the Badgers pick it up cleanly, send up
the near wall. Held briefly at the point, but the
Badgers push it forward. Here's Gorbtenko backhand skates in feet across.
She's got Cassie Hall all alone, haul a tip, a
save and a stop. Venusio crashed in to try to
get a loose puck, but Fauchet able to get it.

(01:58:51):
That puck just bounced. It fluttered just a little too
much for Cassie Hall to get what she needed. What
a job by Goorbatenco to get it to her hauled.
Couldn't quite loft at Venusio a nice job to crash
as well, and give Fouchet a ton of credit for
keeping this one out of the back.

Speaker 14 (01:59:06):
H save by Fouchet. She goes to her right where
Hall's taking the puck and then chans to kick out
her left pad to make the save.

Speaker 4 (01:59:13):
And now we have the trainer hitting the ice here
the referee is skating her over.

Speaker 14 (01:59:17):
Yeah, I met.

Speaker 4 (01:59:17):
You just have an injured player on the ice, So
we'll get some more details on that for you. But
first we're going to take a thirty second break. This

Speaker 8 (01:59:56):
This is ten seventy the game.

Speaker 4 (02:00:03):
Welcome back everyone. Third period of action here in Minnesota State,
the linesman Aaron Neville took aaron stick or a puck
right to the nose. So the trainer was assisting him,
had a little bit of a bloody nose there, and
I think he's going to take a shift or two
off here while he gets that that bloody nose settled. No,
he is, oh no, that's Seal. That's the other that's

(02:00:25):
the other linesman. That is a Glendon Seal. Our officials
here are Key Bradshaw or Neville the linesman. And it
was Neville that got caught right in the schnaz. We
saw her attending to a bloody nose that he had.
Just taking an extra moment here to let him come
back and coach. You were telling the story about about
something you saw happen in a similar fashion.

Speaker 14 (02:00:45):
I was dropping a pucket a practice years ago on
a men when I was coaching men's and you know,
inadvertently one of the people in the faceoff circle came
up with their stick and their blade carved me right
above the eyebrows there. And you know, it just doesn't
take much.

Speaker 4 (02:01:00):
You know, only time I got a bloody nose in
hockey was when I boarded myself. I tripped out of
my own skates. I went face first into the port,
so cut my nose pretty good on my own cage. Badgers,
as we restart here, lose control of the face off
and out of the badger'szone. Minnesota State on the attack.
Carolyn Harvey picks it up, takes it behind her own net,

(02:01:21):
flips it along the near side boards. Badger's cleared into
neutrace for Maggie Scandal. She's stripped of the puck by
Alexis Paddington, who sends it back down and Ava McNaughton
stops it behind the cage for Wisconsin fourteen forty nine
to play in the third period. Badgers get two scores
in this period. They are up five to nothing on
Minnesota State after fighting a very close two to one
win yesterday. Jungles behind the Badger net, Vivian moves it

(02:01:46):
ahead puck intercepted at the point Finley McCarthy can't get
it and fighting for it as Audrey gartin the freshman
big collision between she and one of the Badger players.
They both hit the ice. It comes to the opposite
wall for Goldsworthy send toward the net, nothing doing shot
in a save from mecon right at the opposite point.
That one went to Audrey Garten at the face. A
killer moved from McNaughton right to left pipe and she

(02:02:08):
makes the stop, freezes it down.

Speaker 14 (02:02:11):
Yeah, that was a high percentage shot from below the
right dot, almost the bottom of the circle and goldsby Gold.

Speaker 4 (02:02:18):
The shot was blocked by Vivian Jungles, then it ended
up with another Minnesota State player who fed it right
to Garden. A great stop from Ava McNaughton, just her
seventh save of this game. Only seven shots on goal
from Minnesota State and that was their first of the
third period. Fourteen nineteen to go. In this final period,
Badger's up five to nothing. They win the draw, control
the puck in their own zone, moving through traffic as

(02:02:39):
Casey O'Brien finds Leila Edwards, who fires it down beneath
the Minnesota State net where the Mavericks grab it. Mavericks
send it in their own slot. Edwards gets a skate
on it, keeps it briefly in the zone. Now they're
able to take it into center ice. Minnesota State with
Musuga on the rush, put it toward McNaughton, but it's
behind the net. Badger's control it there. Wisconsin over skates

(02:03:01):
at Sims, but she's quickly back at it, plays it
to herself off the Badger net. Tries a backhanded pass,
but that one's loose on the far wall of the
Badger zone from the point, a shot doesn't get through
traffic opposite point for Goldsworthy, see sends a shot for
a deflection, but it missed wide of the net. A
fancy looking play there, and then the pass back to
Goldsworthy comes out of the zone. She'll dump it and
the Badgers will get an opportunity. As Minnesota State changes

(02:03:24):
thirteen twenty five to play in the period, Lady Potter
behind her net brings it up for Wisconsin. Stretch pass
to the blue line for Sims. She's got Edgswards with
her sim oh Man. The shot from Edwards lightly on.
She tried a one time or on the high slot
and kind of paint brushed it. Fouchet picks it up
off the ice.

Speaker 14 (02:03:41):
Yeah, fan on it. One thing I like we're doing
better this period is we're contesting Mankato in the neutral zone.
We're not letting them bring the puck up ice into
our defensive end. They're just challenging them right away at
our offensive blue line or just into the neutral zone,
and that frustrates the heck out of an opponent, makes
a lot tougher for him to bring the puck up ice.

Speaker 4 (02:04:01):
They're doing a good job not letting them get what
they need. But Minnesota State has generated a couple of
good scoring chances in this carriage. One draw, she sure did.
A shot from Kati Kutlowski is blocked though, and now
on the counter attack is Jamie Nelson. Nelson tries to
pass through center. It's broken up by the defense of
Vivian Jungles. Another shot is saved, that time by Sarah
Wsnevitch Wasnevitch back checked into that play in a big

(02:04:23):
way and does a nice job to break up a
shot from the slot. Badgers come out of their own zone,
got a little bit of speed. It's Claire and right
ahead to Watsnevitch on the left wing side. Referee getting involved.
Now it's excuse me, Mary and Picard who sends the
point for Kotlowski again. Kotlowski near side sends a shot
through traffic right tried a deflection save from Fauchet. Twelve
thirty eight to play in the third and final period,

(02:04:45):
five nothing Wisconsin as Kotlowski sends opposite point for Jungles.
Shot from Jungles is blocked high into the air, back
to earth and picked up by the Badgers working her
way around his Picard face off dot near side, rips
one through it's off of enright why to the air
and grabbed by Minnesota State again, turning it back the
other way as Veckich sends it behind her own net,

(02:05:05):
where she finds Lily Ramirez. Twelve fourteen to play. Ramirez
comes up on the near wall through neutral ice for Nelson.
Nelson sends a pass out its two long. Vivian Jungles
has it, tries to clear it out, does manage to
get it into neutral ice, but picked up and taken
the other way by Van Batavia. Feet across trying to
find Shipley loose puck for Gorbatenko instead in the Badger

(02:05:26):
zone with eleven fifty four to go, Badgers enjoy a
five nothing lead, and here comes Kelly Gorbtenko with a
head of steeve. Tries to get through one too many
defenders and the puck is taken away, but Cassie Hall
gathers at the center point.

Speaker 14 (02:05:39):
As you can't stick handle through everybody.

Speaker 4 (02:05:41):
Kenya Gorbatenko proving it there, Yeah, Minnesota State sends across.
They find van Batavia again, She's able to move it
forward to Juliana Gasdik. Gasdick had that early penalty in
the third period that led to a Badger power play
goal from Maggie Scannal. Cassie Hall takes a shot up
against the wall for her trouble there at neutral ice,
pucked to the far side in front of the Badger's

(02:06:02):
Badger's bench and it'll be m A Venusio in her
own zone with eleven fifteen to go in the game.
Long pass from Venusio to Hall touched up by Hall
for no icing, but behind the net it's Minnesota State
in their own zone. High off the glass on the
far wall, Zawowski sends it into neutral ice immediately picked
up by the Badgers. It's Lacy Eden far face off
dot shot is blocked away, getting the flegs in front.

(02:06:24):
Was gas Dick on that one. Badgers control Venusio now
at the near point center point Harvey high slot rips
a shot in slides just wide, diving is Gormatanko. But
you couldn't get at it. Gorbatenko wanted that one badly.
Now she's got it behind the net once again, turning
around trying to find Hall, She's pushed up against the
wall by Genessa Gastick into the slaught of shot is

(02:06:45):
just wide. That one came from Carolyn Harvey missed on
the left side of the cage. With ten thirty three
to go, Harvey near point now stops up top of
the circle. Opposite point shot from Venusio blocker away that
time by Fauchet beneath the nett. Cassie Hall for the Badgers,
still on offense with ten nineteen to play, Venusio try

(02:07:06):
to get it into the slot. Instead, it comes to
Harvey opposite point, backhands it toward the slot again. Gorbatenko attacking.
Badgers trying everything they can to get a decent shot
out of this opportunity. Hall is shot through the slot,
crashing It is Halverson. Hall still there, the puck's still loose,
and now we get a whistle as Hall pushed Fauchet
right to the goal mouth, but she stops it before

(02:07:27):
it crosses the line. With ten minutes even to play a.

Speaker 14 (02:07:29):
Lot of traffic there. That puck was bouncing around on
the high slot, than the middle slot, and then finally
to the net, but we couldn't quite get a clean
shot on it.

Speaker 4 (02:07:39):
Badgers just push and push and pushed Hans his own
time on that opportunity freshman line out there, but Minnesota
State wins the draw on their own zone in neutral ice.
Halverson able to take it right back in had to
check up on the delayed off sides though, and it
comes to neutral ice. She backhands it down once again
to the near corner. Scannal pursuing Alverson on the near wall,
trying to stop things up. Instead, the puck rattles free

(02:08:01):
and comes into the Badger zone. It's MS Sugar and
Murphy in a foot race. Murphy gets there first. Her
pass is able to find Lady Potter, who plays it
cleanly with the skate and moves it up the near wall.
What an effort from Lady Potter to keep that play alive. Halverson,
now coming up the right wing edge, hassled from behind,
but continues to move the puck ahead finds Finley McCarthy
at the near point. McCarthy sends one towards the high slot,

(02:08:23):
stopped up by Minnesota State puck trapped in the skates
now to the near wall. Nine p fifteen to play
in the period. Five nothing Wisconsin. In this final game
of calendar twenty twenty four. Here's Maggie scannal. She's got
two goals on the night. McCarthy a one timer from
the point and it misses just wide on the glove side.
Nine oh two to go in the period. A long
shot misses the cage, comes to the near side. Finley

(02:08:46):
McCarthy will have it there in the corner. McCarthy behind
the net to the far side now wants to distribute
feed for Ava. Murphy doesn't get through to her. It's
broken up by my sugar loose puck. Back to the
badger's zone.

Speaker 18 (02:08:57):
End.

Speaker 4 (02:08:58):
Lady Potter thought Murphy was going to get it.

Speaker 14 (02:09:00):
No, you get it, No, you get it, No, you
get it.

Speaker 4 (02:09:02):
Unexpectedly peeled off for a line change, Potter has to
take it all the way back into her zone. Finds
Kirsten Simms across to Casey O'Brien in center. That one's
broken up by Shelby Gatormpsen. O'Brien is able to get
it through. Now here's Sims two on one with Edwards.
Feed to Edwards. Edwards drags, taps it just misses. She
put it behind h Fauchet, but it ended up just

(02:09:24):
going through the blue pants and not entering into the goal.

Speaker 10 (02:09:28):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (02:09:28):
What a play from O'Brien and Simms. As ever, along
with Leilah Edwards eight ten to play in the third
and final period, pucked back in the Badger zone behind
their own net, angle pass finds Edwards, she's coming along
with O'Brien and Simms. Edwards finds O'Brien behind the defense,
across to Sims at the opposite faced off dot. She
couldn't get a shot to go. Her back ended passed
toward O'Brien is intercepted and Nelson will carry it forward

(02:09:51):
from Minnesota State. Nelson tries to cross ice pass and
there's nobody there except Leila Edwards. She finds O'Brien stretching
through back into the slot. Sims there to Edwards shot.
Oh and a save and just saving it was fauche.
Those three players do it all and Phauchet has had
to do some crazy stuff to keep them out of
the back.

Speaker 14 (02:10:11):
Are they moving the puck Edwards, O'Brian and Sims. Ah.

Speaker 4 (02:10:17):
The pass from Sims was gorgeous to find the trailing Edwards.
Edwards with a lovely shot, Fouchet with an outstanding save.

Speaker 14 (02:10:25):
Yeah, I don't know how she kept it out of
the net. To be honest with you, no clue.

Speaker 4 (02:10:28):
We have a time out, so let's take one ourselves.
It's Badger Women's Hockey ont am ten seventy the game.

Speaker 22 (02:10:34):

Speaker 1 (02:11:03):
Madison's home for Sabe and Butcher. In the morning Wtso Madison,
we are ten seventy the day.

Speaker 4 (02:11:16):
Welcome back everyone. It's the third period out in man Cato.
The Badgers are up five to nothing and they have
a face off on the in the man Cato zone
on the near side they control. Venusio drops down Forsnevitch.
The third line out there for Wisconsin was Nevitch and
Picard in the near corner fighting to dig it off
the wall. The Badgers have outshot Minnesota State in this
game thirty four to eight, and they have five goals

(02:11:38):
to show for it. Puck knocked into neutralized for Carolyn Harvey.
Harvey's circling around a one touch pass gets it out
of the zone. Minnesota State sends it right back to
Badger territory, but Wisconsin controls was Nevitch. Now right wing
taps into Minnesota State's zone and right has it there
for Wisconsin feeding the slot shot from Picard is blocked

(02:11:58):
cleanly blocked by Claireveckett, but Waznevitch steals it back feed
to end write a shot in a safe and sliding
in with the backhanded blade. What a perfect pass and shot,
but Fauchaise closes the door.

Speaker 14 (02:12:11):
Yeah, just to give you listeners a description of this.
The pass is perfect into the slot. It's almost like
a redirect slash tip by uh Picard, and how Fauchet
kept it out of the net is just great anticipation
and great athletic skill.

Speaker 4 (02:12:26):
Incredible work from the senior goaltender keeps the Badgers from
getting a six it tally in this game six fifty
three to go in the third period. Ava McNaughton rims
it around to the far side of the Badger zone.
Gorbtenko trying to grab it. Instead, it's sent the opposite
way by Minnesota State Juliana Gasdik puts it down into
the corner. Badgers tries to skate it out there. Lacy

(02:12:47):
Eden's got control able to move it to Ava Murphy.
Murphy comes in with a head of steam and a
lot of support. She runs into a wall though of
Minnesota State players. Three players hit the ice as she
kind of crashed through everybody. Lots of pushing and shoving
beneath the back behind the play here. Players still changing,
We're still waiting for players to get out of that area.

Speaker 14 (02:13:07):
Pile here.

Speaker 4 (02:13:08):
Yeah, while the puck was in neutral ice, Badger's control,
send it back toward their own net. It's Lady Potter
that controls four Wisconsin with six zho nine to play
in the game. Back to Ava Murphy far corner of
the Badger' zone up the far wall. Nice job to
spring Cassie Hall and here comes Hall with Lacy Eden.
Two on one. Hall drags it back, toe drags shot
and it's blocked that time by Juliana Gasdik five point

(02:13:31):
fifty four to play. Minnesota State in their own zone
toward the blue line held by Lady Potter, then stripped
off her by Veckich. Veckage got a two on two.
The other way has to slow things down, leaves it
off for Nelson. Nelson from the faceof dot Pad save
from Ava McNaughton. Badger's try and clear it out held
in by Minnesota State on the far wall. Five point
thirty five to go. Mavericks not giving up late in

(02:13:53):
this game, continuing to fight down five against Wisconsin Potter
on the ice and we get a whistle and I
think Potter potentially a little worse for the wear there,
but she does get up on her own power.

Speaker 14 (02:14:02):
Yeah, she's okay, but she took a while. Yeah, we'll
see what happens here. We got a defensive zone face off.

Speaker 4 (02:14:12):
And Badgers will have to restart on the far side
of their own territory. Five twenty seven to go in
the game, they lead five to nothing. The freshman line
will be out there. Maggie Scannal will take on Taylor
OTREMBA base off is one by Scannal. She finds Jungles
behind her, Jungles on the far wall, stops up re
versus course opposite direction for Kotlowski. Now Kotlowski a long

(02:14:34):
pass that was out of the reach of Philly McCarthy.
McCarthy in a foot race with Shelby Goetormpson. McCarthy gets
there right as Patompson does it, controls the puck. Finley
McCarthy bottom of the circle, takes a shot from Goetormpson
and the puck is off her tape. But the Badger's
behind the nets, still fighting for this one, in the
person of Maggie Scannal. Five minutes even to play, Badger's
up five to nothing. In the third period, McCarthy trying

(02:14:55):
to find Scannal skated away by Otremba. On the counter attack,
feeds across to tough tuttle pushed all the way to
the outside opposite hashmarks pass intercepted by Hannah Halverson near
side of the Badger zone. Her clearing attempt is held
at the point by Minnesota State. Loose puck tapped away
by Kutlowski. Halverson. Nice job to get it up off
the glass on a one touch from Finley McCarthy. Puck

(02:15:17):
at the point and into neutral ice. Again Minnesota State trailing,
but Jungles will have it cleanly in her own zone.
With four twenty eight to play, Halverson, along with Sims
and Scannal, find Sims at center point. Sims working toward
the slot, now to the face off dot near side,
turns around reversus direction. Sims through a couple of defenders
top of the opposite circle. Four thirteen to go, drops

(02:15:40):
a pass off Harvey for Venusio at the center point.
Well Nutio wanted to get it to Harvey, but it
got caught up on her own knee and Harvey has
to take it in center ice. Nice little passlough to
find Edwards. She comes in with Sims behind her, Edwards
drags through into the slot, thought about a backhander, instead
settles sings down to establish an offense. Three point fifty
three to play. Now into the slot for Edwards, a

(02:16:01):
shot and us save tracked cleanly by Fauche.

Speaker 14 (02:16:04):
Prior to that shot that Edwards's talk, the tuck is
in some incredible stick work. Her extremely long reach allows
her to do things that nobody else can do, you know,
keeping the puck away from an opponent, changing directions and
it's you know, it's like an eight foot difference, and.

Speaker 4 (02:16:21):
Well and you're one hundred percent right. And not only
does that give her the advantage of doing things other
players can do, it gives you the advantage of doing
things players don't expect her to do it correct. See
a lot of players who just don't believe that she
got to the puck and all of a sudden she's
on the attack again.

Speaker 14 (02:16:34):
Yeah, I had it over here, but now she's got
it somewhere else.

Speaker 4 (02:16:37):
Now it's gone, Yeah, puck behind the Badger's net. With
three thirty three to play, they move it up to
their own far wall, where it's skated out cleanly by
Casey O'Brien. O'Brien still on the ice, A lead pass,
a little contact that the blue line doesn't allow that
pass to be received in Minnesota State sends it near wall,
intercepted though by Leila Edwards. Edward's in the corner, now

(02:16:57):
tapped clear by Minnesota State up into neutral lice and
they'll get a dump and change needed some new skaters.
Three o eight to play, McNaughton stops at behind the badgernette.
Ema Venusio has it coming up the far side of
Badger territory long stretch pass. I'm not sure if that
made contact with anyone. It did not icing the call,
will head back to the Badger zone. With two fifty
nine to go in this game.

Speaker 14 (02:17:17):
Yeah, they're gonna face it off. I think to the
left of Ava McNaughton in our own end here and
see who wins the draw and what we do with it.
I think we got Casey O'Brien in the circle, so well,
we're gonna have a little break. I think somebody might
have called time out here, huh.

Speaker 4 (02:17:32):
Yeah, I believe Minnesota State has taken a time out,
or actually it appears the Badgers have taken a timeout.
So you know what, why don't we take one of
our sixty second breaks as well. The Badgers are up
five to nothing on Minnesota State out here in Mankato,
and we're going to take a break for the time out.
Two fifty nine to go in this third period. It
is all Badgers thirty six shots on goal against just

(02:17:52):
eight for Minnesota State, and Wisconsin has been playing great.
We'll be back shortly with Badger women's hockey on Am
ten seventy the game.

Speaker 8 (02:19:00):
This is ten to seventy the game.

Speaker 4 (02:19:05):
Welcome back everyone. After the time out from Wisconsin, we
are back in action. The Badgers in their own zone.
Minnesota State able to pick things back up. Send cross
ice for Goldsworthy, a shot and a blocker save from
Ava McNaughton's steered to the near corner. Ava Murphy with
it behind her own net for Wisconsin looking to slow
things down, break it out of the zone up at
the point Minnesota State holds it in two thirteen to

(02:19:28):
go in this game five nothing Wisconsin. Barring a miracle,
they will take this win. We're going to get a
stoppage here, and I wonder if we're going to get
a penalty or just a stoppage for that one. Maybe
pinching up into one of the benches.

Speaker 14 (02:19:41):
Yeah, it was underneath a player, and I think the
referee just uses better judgment.

Speaker 4 (02:19:46):
Just stop that play up. So the Badgers will ipreve
it off here to nineteen and one on the season
at the end of this game. Two big wccha wins
this weekend to close out the year of twenty twenty
four two zero five to go. Badgers win the face off,
Kotlowski up the glass near side, Cassie Hall giving chase.
Getting there first was Ramirez of Minnesota State, and the

(02:20:09):
puck comes all the way back to Wisconsin Badger's control
in their own zone. Nice little one touch breaks Lacy
Eden free. She's got Cassie Hall with her on a
two on one. Eden to the faceoff dot backhand shot
through the crease, but nobody could get it. Kotlowski pinches
down from her defensive position, holds it on the near boards.
Turned the other direction that time by Getorpsen of Minnesota
State in their own zone far wall for the Mavericks

(02:20:31):
and they send it back behind their own net. Eden
is there hassling trying to get after it. Minute twenty
eight to play, bringing it forward as tunnel of Minnesota
State through neutral ice around one defender. Kotlowski keeps her
to the outside. She stops up and rims it all
the way to the far wall up to the point
where Minnesota State is sliding in. They try to turn
it around near side. Kotlowski has it on the near corner.

(02:20:52):
Minnesota State to the face off, dot shot and a save.
That shot off Zawowski stick and then McNaughton freezes it down.
I didn't think she'd have the angle to get that
shot on net. What a play from Lauren Zawowski.

Speaker 14 (02:21:02):
Yeah, I think the player followed the puck to the
net and she sealed it down low.

Speaker 4 (02:21:09):
After that, Jungles was in good positions. Awaiske able to
get it past her somehow. Nice stop from McNaughton. Face
off in the badger zone. So Wasske has it again,
feeds it up to the point. Shot from the point
doesn't make it through quite a bit of traffic. And
now someone got hit right in the head. That was
Carolyn Harvey. She took a shot off the helmet and
she's skating away very gingerly, and we're going to get

(02:21:31):
a stoppage. Yeah, with fifty one point seven to.

Speaker 14 (02:21:34):
Go, he's just slowly echine toward.

Speaker 4 (02:21:36):
The Yeah, that looked a little bit difficult for her.

Speaker 14 (02:21:40):
We'll see what the she was.

Speaker 4 (02:21:42):
She stayed on her feet. Yeah, you know, didn't didn't collapse,
But man, she took She took a hard shot right
off the cage.

Speaker 14 (02:21:50):
Was that what it was?

Speaker 4 (02:21:51):
Yeah, it sure looked like it was a shot attempt
that got her right in the head. So we restart play.
We'll try and get you some more info on how
on how Carolyn Harvey is doing. The Badger's control the draw,
but now it's a loose puck is picked up by
Minnesota State. It's over the shoulder and over the crossbar
on an attempted shot toward mcdaughton. Thirty eight seconds to
go in this game. The Badgers now pick up Emma Venusio,

(02:22:11):
wanting to get it forward, take it away by Minnesota State,
and the battle continues in neutralights. Venusio again back to
her own territory. With twenty eight seconds to go, lead
passed for McCarthy, who rockets it into the Minnesota State zone.
Fauchet stops it behind her net.

Speaker 10 (02:22:24):
There.

Speaker 4 (02:22:26):
Minnesota State player loses the edge, but they're able to
get it ahead to Borgerie. She comes up left wing
edge of the Badger zone. She'll dump and give Chase
twelve seconds to play. McNaughton stops it behind the net,
Jungles has it there for Wisconsin and Venusio She and
Jungles will just play catch with it, and with five
seconds to go, that is how this game will end.
The Badgers defeat Minnesota State five to nothing in regulation.

(02:22:48):
After a very close two to one game yesterday, the
Badgers really show up in spades for today. Man.

Speaker 14 (02:22:54):
I'll tell you it was a different game today. I
can't leave the shot differential when you figure they outshot
us by one shot yesterday and we outshot them by
twenty six shots today. Not something I expected, but I'll
take it.

Speaker 4 (02:23:11):
It is a great win for the Badgers, a great
way to close out twenty twenty four. They finished the
calendar year of twenty twenty four with a forty and
three record that is as darn near unbelievable as we
see a replay of some of the goals coming here,
Maggie scandals in the first period, the feed to Edwards
also in the first period, some tremendous play from Wisconsin.

(02:23:33):
All of these goals were just well earned, well done.
We'll get some of the highlights and a little bit
more for you on the postgame show. It's Badgers five
Minnesota state zero at the end of regulation, the end
of the twenty twenty four year for these Badgers. Let's
take a break and be back on AM ten seventy
the game.

Speaker 4 (02:25:57):
Welcome back to the postgame show, everybody, If you just
chow us. The number one Wisconsin Badgers defeat their WCCHA
Conference opponent, the Minnesota State Mavericks, five to nothing in regulation.
The Badgers get five goals, two of them from freshman
Maggie Scannal, back from injury. Wasn't here last week. She
comes back this week in a big way. We've got
all the audio for you of the highlights. Let's head

(02:26:18):
over to those now. Ope, I apologize, Let's give ourselves
a second here to get those ready. So coach. A
lot of different players contributing on the score sheet. Casey
O'Brien had two points, a goal and an assist. Leila
Edwards had three points, a goal and two assists. Kirsten
Simms had two assists, Maggie Scannell had two goals, and

(02:26:41):
then also Gorbatanco as well as oh Man. Excuse me,
I'm completely losing my train of thought here. Cassie Hall,
Carolyn Harvey, and Katie Kutlowski all getting on the score sheet.
Two power play goals, three even strength goals. Wisconsin two
for three on the power play, not in a shutout,

(02:27:02):
just only ten shots on goal allowed. Like I feel
like I could go on and on and on here
the stats here all in Wisconsin's favor, and that outside
of the first period, it felt like it was all
Wisconsin in that game.

Speaker 14 (02:27:12):
In a nutshell, what I'll say is, I think we
played a complete game today, you know, and that was
you know, you just covered all the different categories and
you have to say, what else could we do? Not much.
I think we pretty much got the job done today,
much different than yesterday.

Speaker 4 (02:27:30):
Badgers had three penalties of their own to kill off.
At eleven thirty in the first period, Ava Murphy called
for interference, At three eighteen in the second period, Avia
Murphy called for roughing, and then at twelve ten in
the third period, it was Sarah Wesnovitch that was called
for tripping. They successfully killed off all three of those.
The cliche and hockey is that your goaltender has to
be your best penalty killer. But on those power plays,

(02:27:52):
there weren't very many shots from Minnesota State, and there
just weren't very many shots for Avia mcgotton at all.
And after yesterday where it seemed like the defense didn't
quite have the same rhythm that they want to boy.
Today they were all over it.

Speaker 14 (02:28:04):
Yeah, we weren't in sync yesterday, and I'm sure they
realized that identified it, made to proper adjustments and gave
us a good outcome today.

Speaker 4 (02:28:12):
So after jumping the gun, we are ready for the highlights.
Let's listen to the highlights of those goals from this game.
Five nothing Wisconsin. Here on Am ten seventy of the game.
Ladie Kotlowski back on the ice after having been absent
last week. Nice little stretch pass. Two liner. Here we
come down low, Maggie Scandal backhand store man. What a
stretch pass to break Maggie Scandal loose. She fights through

(02:28:33):
a defender, puts it to the upper right corner, glove side.
It's one nothing Wisconsin. Minnesota stayed into the corner. Now
looking towards the slot. Nothing there and now here comes Simms.
Kirsten Simms got a little bit of speed. Whips have
passed to Casey O'Brien on the left wing side. O'Brien
bottom of the circle. Sims in the slot. Edward's a
shutting a store man.

Speaker 14 (02:28:53):
That was beautiful.

Speaker 4 (02:28:54):
What a flip pass. She flipped it over. Kirstin Simms
or over her stick and instead found Leila Edwards at
the hashmarks here she comes, as we watched the replay
right past her to Edwards and what a score. Sims
around the world thought about a backhanded pass. Now does
drop for O'Brien, back to Sims. Beneath the net. She's
got Edwards, feed to Edwards, settles it down. Harvey high slot,

(02:29:15):
works her way in a little lower hashbark shut man
and a goal Yeah, Carolyn Harvey to the absolute top
of the net. It bounced straight back out, but it
crosses the goal line. It's a power play tally for Wisconsin.

Speaker 14 (02:29:28):
She sidesteps somebody out in the high slot, freezes a
goalie and rips a hard left handed wrists shot over
the glove of the goaltender Fauchet, just under the crossbar
where it'll.

Speaker 4 (02:29:39):
Come loose to Ava Murphy. A nice lead pass finds O'Brien.
She gets Edwards, Edwards and O'Brien in a one on
two feed to O'Brien, shutting the score. And just twenty
two seconds in a two on one chance on Layla
Edwards to Casey O'Brien, she buries it. It's four nothing.
What's got Brian assists Minnesota State controls in their own corner.
O'Brien holds it on that near wall up to the

(02:30:01):
point for Lady Potter. As O'Brien goes for a change,
Cassie Hall with it just ten seconds to go on
the power play. Four nothing Badgers here in the third
period haul down beneath the net feed in towards center
crashing the net was Gorbatenko and she scores. If they
have tried that twice this game, they couldn't get it
to go. This time they do manage to get it
to find the back of the net. The Badgers get

(02:30:22):
the power play goal, which is three seconds left on
the penalty and let's see this replay. Hall beneath the
neet sends it through Gorbatenko. There it came to Scannal.
It went off the skate of Goorbatanko to Scandal on
the low slot and Scannal with her second goal of
the night. That was just a beautiful Vivian moves it ahead,
puck intercepted at the point Filly McCarthy can't get it
and fighting for it is Audrey Garten, the freshman. Big

(02:30:44):
collision between she and one of the Badger players. They
both hit the ice. It comes to the opposite wall
for Goldsworthy send toward the net, nothing doing shot in
a save from McNaughton right at the opposite point that
one went to Audrey Garten at the faceoff dot. A
killer move from McNaughton right to left pipe and she
makes the stop, freezes it down. Twelve seconds to play.

(02:31:05):
McNaughton stops it behind the net. Jungles has it there
for Wisconsin and Venusio. She and Jungles will just play
catch with it with five seconds to go. That is
how this game will end. The Badgers defeat Minnesota State
five to nothing in regulation. After a very close two
to one game yesterday, the Badgers really show up in
spades for today. So that's the tail of the tape.

(02:31:27):
After an exciting season so far, an exciting calendar year
of twenty twenty four, the Badgers close it out in
style and with authority, a five to nothing victory over
the Minnesota State Mavericks. Coach, having been with this team
now through this entire first half of the season, you're
finishing nineteen and one, the only loss to number two

(02:31:48):
Ohio State. How do you feel about where the Badgers
are going into the holiday break here.

Speaker 14 (02:31:52):
Well, you got to like that. I mean, a nineteen
and one record against the schedule we have. I'm pretty
pleased with it. And what I really like about it
is we're getting contributions from a lot of people. You know,
you've got your big unbelievable point getters and O'Brien and
Edwards and Eden and Harvey and you know, the list
is pretty long, Sims. Let's just throw if I'm missing anybody,

(02:32:16):
forgive me please, But we're getting contributions from everybody, whether
it's on the penalty kill, whether it's in defense, on
the power play five on five, you know, filling in
even though maybe we shuffle lines with a couple of
different line mates, they're all responding well. So I really
like that. And then the development and the goaltending speaks
for itself as well.

Speaker 4 (02:32:36):
Absolutely, you talked about contributions from everyone. I do want
to highlight just before we go on break for several
weeks here. Aj Harrison is the sports information director for
the Wisconsin women's hockey team. Every time you hear me
calling out a stat asking these trivia questions of Mark
getting some behind the scenes info line sheets, everything like that.
That all comes from AJ. He does a ton of

(02:32:57):
hard work for these Badges to make sure that they
get the recognition that they deserve, that we and the
media have all the information and access that we need.
Big thanks to AJ Harrison for keeping us in the
know and making sure that we can bring you these
games cleanly. As well. Brad Berg is our producer today.
Sean Preeble produces these games for us as well. They
do a tremendous job. Those highlights that you hear, all

(02:33:19):
the different audio wizardry that you hear that makes us
sound at least halfway decent, that's all thanks to them.
Big thanks to them and everyone else at Wisconsin and
here at iHeartMedia that will do it for us for
twenty twenty four. The Badgers will be back in action
very early in twenty twenty five. Our next game January
tewod Home versus Ohio State at Lebon. Be here on

(02:33:39):
Am ten seventy to hear that one. Until then for
our producer Brad Berg, my partner Mark Greenhall, my name
is Zach sealof saying so long, take care of yourselves
and take care of somebody else. Good night, everybody,
