Speaker 1 (00:19):
Now, here's your host, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Aways.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Welcome into the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick bruce Witz.
Wisconsin Badgers fall for the first time this season, sixty
seven sixty four to the Michigan Wolverines. You can join
the conversation with us on the hotline six oh eight
three two one, thirteen ten. We'd love to hear your

(00:46):
thoughts after this first Badger's loss of the season. It's
it's a tough welcome to Big Ten Conference play for Wisconsin.
This was a back and forth battle all night long,
but Michigan was able to stay on tip down the
stretch as the Battle of the Biggs, the battle of
the aircraft carriers unfolded.

Speaker 5 (01:06):
It was practically the Battle of Midway out there. But Nick, the.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Badgers lost one of their carriers, Stephen Krowell. He fouled
out with three minutes to go, and the combo of
Wolf and Golden for Michigan were just too much for
Wisconsin's inside defense.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, no doubt about it, David. The reality is once
Kraw fouls out, Golden goes ahead and scores the final
six points for the Wolverines, and what was a career
night for him, Vlad Golden goes out there and he
puts up twenty four points on a Badger's defense that
this season had been pretty strong and tonight remained pretty
strong in all areas besides guarding the starting four, Danny

(01:48):
Wolf in the starting five, Vlad Golden for the Wolverines.
This is a game where Wisconsin's bigs, although if you
look at the points in the paint, it's relatively close,
but Wisconsin's bigs Winter and Stephen Krowe combined for ten points,
Wolf and Golden forty four. So that's the difference there
in this one. I mean, you lock up the big

(02:10):
boys a couple more times, a couple more possessions could
be a whole different result.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
Yeah, And I think that's the story here because you
have basically as even of a matchup as you can
because Wisconsin has two seven footers with Winter and krow
Crow very experienced one Michigan, two seven footers with Wolf
and Golden going matching up against each other all night long,
and so you would think it's like, Okay, this is

(02:35):
a chance for these two to match up really well
against each other, and mich Michigan's bigs just dominated Crow
and Winter. Crow two points, Winter eight points. As you
pointed out, Nick, just not enough. And this is something
that I think Badgers fans also have been maybe complaining
about with Stephen Krowe for the better part of four

(02:58):
years here, where it's like there should be more offensive
output from Steven Krowell. He played twenty two minutes tonight,
got into foul trouble early, stayed in foul trouble, wasn't
able to do much of anything offensively at all. But Michigan,
they've got big guys and they're putting up twenty points each,
Golden twenty four, Wolf twenty. That's something that you know,

(03:22):
as Badgers fans, it's frustrating because you have two seven
footers over here. It's easy to imagine forty combined points
from from Krowl and Winter, but you don't get it.
And Michigan comes in and they've got two bigs and
they're able to.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
Put up forty combined points.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah. The difference really to me is that you've got
two absolute grown men full with gentlemen on the other
side from Michigan. And I do think that when Wisconsin
puts out their roster and they give two thirty five,
two hundred and thirty five pounds in nol in winter,
that they're being a little generous there. There is meat
to be gained on the bones of Nolan winter. The issue,

(04:02):
as many would feel, with Stephen Crowell, is he's at
his end. This is his final form four Wisconsin. This
is what his body's gonna look like. And it's a
little concerning for me to look at how he has
been used this year because they've changed their approach with him.
Maybe that's the Greg Stems my impact now, new director
of player development, former big man here at Wisconsin in

(04:25):
the NBA, Steve's playing less minutes per game this year,
just about five minutes less per contest. He was at
twenty nine last year. Today it's gonna take a tip
tick down. He was at twenty five coming into tonight,
and his output on both aspects rebounds and points are
down one year to the next. He's down about three
points per game this season from eleven point two tonight.

(04:48):
It'll take a hit with the two points he scored
down to about eight, and then the same thing at
rebounds seven to five tonight, he doesn't make much of
a dent on the board's either four rebounds for him.
Steve's not playing that well and he's not trending in
a direction of potentially turning a corner. And that's where
concerns start coming in because there's a lot on his

(05:08):
shoulders to be that starting five, to be the guy
that can take on at Golden take on plenty of
guys in the Big ten that are monsters down low,
and Steve's got to turn it around. So much time
left a lot of track record with him where he's
proven that he can do it. But you know, you
start worrying a little bit as each game passes.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Yeah, and that's the thing too, because he's a senior.
You know, this is his final year. This is someone
where you would think they'd be able to come in
and hit the ground running. He hasn't been able to
do that this year, and it is going to be
kind of frustrating, and as we get into Big ten play,
it's clearly going to be a problem if this trend

(05:46):
does continue. So with Wisconsin, you know they've had great
success here early on, being eight to er to start
the season. It's all gone well so far, and you know,
this is an opportunity for them to learn and see
where they're really at and find some things where they
need to grow and get themselves ready for Marquette coming up,

(06:08):
because that's that's a big, big matchup against a top
five team in the country that's coming up on Saturday.
So they need to get Stephen Krowell going. If Wisconsin
is going to be successful this year, they need to
get him going. They also need to get Max Klesmik going.
Another rough night for him, but we will get into
that coming up.

Speaker 5 (06:27):
Here as well.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
On the other side of the break, we'd also love
to hear from you listening to the show here if
you've got thoughts after this Badgers when you can call
us on the hotline six eight three two one thirteen
ten if you'd like to join in the conversation with
thoughts on krall or KLEZMT or the overall frustrating Badger's
loss here tonight. We'll get to all of that coming

(06:50):
up here. Wisconsin falls to Michigan sixty seven sixty four.
You're listening to the JANK Security Solutions basketball postgame show.

Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Brucewitz as the
Badger's fall for the first time this season sixty seven
sixty four to the Michigan Wolverines as they opened Big

(07:43):
Ten play here tonight. And it was a rough go
all around for Wisconsin offensively, shooting just thirty four percent
from the field, just twenty two percent from three six
of twenty seven.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
Uh, really a rough go. As Nick and I were
talking with kraw.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
And Winter the big We're really having a tough time
of it against Wolf and Golden the two seven footers
from Michigan. But Max Klesmant another rough night for him.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Man.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
We've talked about him previously on the postgame show here
Nick Max Klesmant e total points but three of fourteen,
shooting one of nine from three. It's been so uncharacteristically
bad from Max Klesmet from beyond the arc this season.
His numbers just just keep on going down. And it's

(08:29):
really starting to get concerning to me at this point,
because we saw Klesmant take some big shots here late
in the game with Wisconsin down three, a chance to
tie it, Klesmitt was taken the shot, and really, to me,
he's the fourth, maybe fifth option out there, but at best,

(08:50):
Klesmant is your fourth best.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
Three point option right now.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
And I never thought i'd actually say that based on
what I've seen the last couple of years of them.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
It has been a tough stretch for Max. Right so,
he hits a career high six threes in their second
game of the year, six to eleven from deep against
Montana State, and since then he's struggled to make multiple
threes in games while shooting at least five threes in
every contest this season, and tonight he's one of nine.
He falls to just over twenty five percent from deep

(09:22):
this year, shooting sixteen of sixty three from the three
point range. But we've seen him in the clutch moments
make the shots in the past, whether that was last
year against Marquette when he went off in that first half,
or it was at the Big Ten semi finals at

(09:42):
the Big Ten Championship last year where he makes the
layup to beat Perdue. Right, So there's a belief in
him in the clutch that he's going to be able
to make that shot, but he's still searching for it.
When we hear from coach Guard a little bit later
in the program, Guard spoke about that in the postgame.
It's a guy that we know has the ability to
shoot threes. It's starting to feel little Connor as season

(10:04):
esque as last year when a season was on the court,
he was always searching for a shot. The luxury that
Klesman gets, though, is he gets far far more minutes
than what a season was afforded last year. He's a
guy that's out there for the majority of the contest,
and tonight he's out there for a total thirty six
minutes minutes matching Blackwell for the team high. So he's

(10:27):
searching for it. I'm not the coach, we're not the coaches.
They drew something up. He got a good look. I
think the focus was on Blackwell and Tanjay in that moment.
Tanj doesn't attempt a shot in the final six forty three.
That might be the greater concern for me is how
he can't get that guy the ball in a shot
but misses it and they end up going to the

(10:47):
other end of the court, not getting another opportunity to
get that game tying shot off with winter Head into
the free throw line in the final moments, missing his
first free throw and it was a one on one,
one in one, so get going. But on the positive
side of things, you know, John Blackwell did have quite
the performance. Nine rebounds is eye popping for your wing

(11:10):
to be down there and get that type of rebound
action and sixteen points for him. He had ten in
the second half, which was a huge stretch for Wisconsin
when when John Blackwell gets going, he gets two consecutive
second chance rebound put back layups to put them up
forty five forty four after trailing forty one, forty four,

(11:30):
then he comes down the court with a jumper. John
Blackwell continues to be as consistent as it gets, John
Todjays as consistent as it gets. These are the positives
from tonight that even in a loss, you were able
to rely on those two to step up.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Yeah, it can definitely take away some some positives in
all these kinds of games. And yeah, that that stretch
there were Blacks where Blackwell had six straight points take
Wisconsin from being down three to up three was crucial
for them, but still Wisconsin not able to continue to
take advantage of that momentum, allowing a three from Cheddar
from Michigan being able to tight right back up and

(12:06):
then still back and forth and back and forth really
the whole rest of the game. But I do like
what you pointed out there, Nick, about the concern with
john Tonjay not taking shots there late in the game.
And I mean, clearly the secret is out on john Tonjay. Okay,
that there are no secrets here that Tonjay is going

(12:27):
to be the leading scorer. He is the top option
for Wisconsin offensively, so the focus for Michigan defensively is
going to be to shut him down and force other
guys to be open. But still Tonjay also has the
ability to just drive the ball and draw fouls. That's
something that we've seen all season long. We're even just

(12:47):
driving to the paint, even if there's a guy on him,
being able to draw the whistle, draw foul. That's something
that he is very skilled at, and we didn't really
see it as much today. Just six trips of the
free throw line five of six for Tom but Michigan
had fouls to give there in that second half. The
refs were not calling a ton of fouls in the
second half of this game. I think that's something that

(13:09):
maybe also played a factor here as well. But Michigan
is playing lockdown defense on Tanja and just just with
what he brings offensively, even if they've got guys on him.
I'd rather trust Toanjay taking these shots and either drawing
fouls or even even if they're contested. I'd almost rather

(13:31):
trust that. Even though even though Klusman's got some open looks.
I don't disagree with open looks, but you got to
kind of go with with.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
With the hot hand their like, are you with me here? Nick?

Speaker 6 (13:44):
Like?

Speaker 5 (13:44):
I feel like I got to get some more here.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
I would agree right that that Tanja, as I'm looking
back here, as I'm double checking here in in our
you know, our database. Seven point fifty three left in
the game was last time john Tonja took a shot.
So he goes a final eight minutes without a shot.
They've got to find a way to put the ball
in his hands. And credit to Michigan. We have to

(14:07):
really take a step back here and examine the reality
that is what Dusty May is going to bring to
this Michigan program. May coming off of back to back
successful seasons, a series of successful seasons, but once he
was put on the map two years ago as a
final four team with FAU Florida Atlantic, followed it up
last year with another great year. He brings Vlad Golden

(14:27):
with him here to Michigan. He goes out and he
gets Danny Wolf from Yale. He goes out and gets
Roddy Gale from Ohio State. And ahead of that, also
a familiar face for Wisconsin. Not a huge impact tonight.
Rubin Jones, who played for North Texas for a few seasons,
beat Wisconsin in the NIT semi finals a couple of
years ago. He is now with Michigan. Right, Dave reidtooled

(14:50):
this roster. They have a brand new coaching staff. This
is a program that is completely going under change, and
now they open the season with just one unlost seven
to one. Opened the Big Ten year with a win
over Wisconsin on the road. Right, this is a matchup
that when we look at this week's rankings, people are

(15:10):
gonna say, Wow, Wisconsin lost to an unranked team. I'm
telling you right now, Michigan's gonna be on the customer
being ranked. They're gonna be near the top of the
Big Ten for the entire season. And they did a
hell of a job isolating and eliminating John Tonja down
the stretch, and Wisconsin's gonna learn from this. They're gonna
look at this. I highly doubt that Tonja will go
another eight minute stretch this season, especially in crunch time,

(15:33):
without getting a shot up. And you know, credit needs
to be given to Michigan in this one early in
the season. Wisconsin falls eight and one. But Stephen Kraus
my biggest concern. I know Max Klesmith's shooting has been
a problem, but Big Steve can't afford to take a
step back in his final season here and that's what
it's been so far.

Speaker 4 (15:53):
No, he can't, and I mean this is a final
season two for Klesment. Yeah, you can almost feel like
he's getting to to the point of pressing a little bit,
like trying to force the shot, trying to force it
to get it going. Klesman took the final four shots
for Wisconsin. He made one of them, he made the
one jumper, but Klezman taking the final four shots based

(16:17):
on how he's been going. It is not an ideal
situation for Wisconsin that the Badgers need both Klesman and
kraw their senior leaders. These are guys with a hundred
starts of college basketball experience. They need them to lead
the way. They need them to be the leaders there
on the court. Now, they're very important leaders in the

(16:39):
locker room. I'm sure you know that there's nothing wrong
with with what they've been doing there. But on the court,
they need these guys to be putting up the point,
putting up the numbers that Wisconsin's expecting from them, and
they just they weren't able to do it tonight. They
haven't done it for a large part of this season,
and they got to the eight and no mark largely

(17:00):
because John Tanjay has come in and just been a
phenomenal score and John Blackwell has really grown from year
one to year two. That's what's really helped them get
to this eight to o stretch to start the season.
And now as you get into Big Ten play, it's
clear that that is not going to end up being
enough when you run into a team like Michigan, and

(17:22):
there's a lot of really good programs in the Big
Ten that they're going to have to contend with, and
they are going to need Klesmant and Krow to really
step it up as the season goes along. And we
will also hear from Nick osen of twenty four to
seven Sports.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
We're gonna get.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
His thoughts on this game and we'll see if he
ends up agreeing with us here on Crowley and pleasmet
As we react to Wisconsin falling to Michigan sixty seven
sixty fours. Nick Osin from twenty four to seven Sports
is coming up. Fun facts with Dave is coming up
as well. Stay tuned and stick around. This is the

Jan k Securities Basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
He's past. Stole it Away by Nolan Winter Winter to
the Love daland Wake two head slam, Dug Nolan winner,
big Man putting it on the floor, taking it wow distance.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
Welcome back to the JANK Security Solutions basketball postgame show
from Home Security to Automation, Jay and K Security Solutions
as you covered. Go to jksecurity dot com for more info.
Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Brucewitz and joining
us from the coal center is Nick Osen from twenty
four to seven Sports And uh, Nick, this game really

(18:45):
kind of a tough loss for Wisconsin. They did not
shoot the ball well. But as Nick and I have
really been talking about this whole show here, this was
a battle of the biggs, bet ole of the seven footers,
Wolf and Golden for Michigan, Crowl and Winter for Wisconsin,
and the bigs for Wisconsin just could not measure up

(19:06):
to the output that Michigan's bigs were able to.

Speaker 7 (19:11):
Yeah, guys, it's great to be back on. And you know, Dave,
I think that's absolutely kind of the main focus. I
think it's as much the battle, like you mentioned, as
just it felt like the defense wasn't able to just
kind of settle in and stop that pick and roll.
I think we were just in the pressers and we
probably heard it three or four times like that four

(19:32):
or five pick and roll. You don't see that run
by a lot of teams. You know, most guys to
seven footers, they're not usually as skilled and you know,
kind of versatile as these two are. I mean, Danny
Wolf has some of the kind of skills and vision
on the floor as like a point guard, so I
think that made things really easy. Golden impressed me. I

(19:52):
knew he was skilled, but kind of with his feel
for the game right, knowing when to crash, knowing when
to screen, knowing when to roll. So I think that's fair.

Speaker 6 (19:59):
Dave.

Speaker 7 (19:59):
I actually was encouraged by some of what I saw
from Winter, especially early. But with Crowl and Foul trouble, right,
you don't trust some of that depth yet in terms
of the you know, the the Grapees, the Hodges, like
they can't necessarily play against guys like this right now,
and I think all of that kind of culminated. And
still I'll just add real quick, Dave, if it was

(20:20):
just kind of like in a vacuum, I'm not so
worried about this loss, but because of what it's leading
to at number five, Marquette at Illinois who like almost
always has the badger's number. I really felt like tonight
was an important one to have.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
And you know what's important, holding the opponent's leading scorer
to as minimal as possible. They go ahead and they
hold Trey Donaldson to zero points tonight. So Wisconsin, although
they may have struggled with the big men thirteen points
per game for Donaldson, coming into tonight zero on zero
seven shooting, what do they do right there?

Speaker 7 (20:56):
In your opinion, well, you know what a bruiser. I
came into this game feeling like Wisconsin had the guard advantage.
I actually was talking with some friends about it, so
you know, it felt like he had some open looks,
specifically from three ye, but overall they made things difficult
off the catch. I just have so much trust in
guys like Blackwell, even though he had an off night shooting,

(21:17):
klesmet like in terms of his one on one defense,
those guys know how to guard. And I want to
give credit to, you know, coach guard Lance Randall, Krabenhoff Chambliss,
Like this staff is phenomenal with their scouting reports, so
I think that they had Donaldson scouted really well. Sometimes
you just missed some open jumpers. I think that was
a part of it. However, just being in there speaking

(21:37):
with Guard and the players, I know that they probably
would rather have given up a couple threes than just
kind of those consistent open looks in the paint, because
I mean, I don't see Nolan Winter kind of get
that animated is a little strong, but like clearly, you know,
frustrated with how things went tonight. A good sign that
obviously they're recognizing that. But you could see this team again,

(21:59):
you know, maybe in conference tournament and you definitely have
to get that type of thing short up.

Speaker 4 (22:04):
Yeah, absolutely, Nick that they do. And they also need
to get Max Klezmant going. And we talked about this
previously after the last game, but Klesmant it's still continuing.
And I know you're not totally worried about him yet,
but one of nine from three and he takes the
final four shots in this game, you know, despite the

(22:27):
fact that he's been in such a cold stretch. And
Nick and I were talking about this too, about Tanjay
not taking a shot since the eight minute mark, since
the seven to fifty three mark to go in the
game when he made that three to tie it up
at fifty two, he didn't take a shot the rest
of the way. Klusmit ends up taking the final four
shots for Wisconsin. Did you like that that Klesman took

(22:48):
took all those four shots, that that's how it ended
up going for Wisconsin.

Speaker 7 (22:53):
Well, Day, First, I want to give you credit because
you kind of said this as a worry the last show,
and I said that I wasn't yet. I'm still not like,
oh my gosh, it's panic mode. However, even Coach Guard
said and it wasn't in a negative light at all.
I mean, the guys love Max, but it was you know,
he's in a little slump right now, we need to
help him get out of it. I think that was

(23:14):
a very good thing to say. I have less of
a problem, Dave with you know, him shooting the last
three four or five shots. I know it was four.
I think at least two of those were great looks.
One of them was clearly a set play for him,
So no issue with that. But not having Tanjay shoot
the rock that that is my issue. I mean, even
though it was a quote unquote slower night for him,

(23:34):
just because of some of the output that he's had,
still was just one shot off of fifty percent from
the field, eighty three percent from free throw, sixty from
long range, eighteen points I think four or five rebounds,
So you've got to find a way. He's so good,
he's tricky at getting to the rim drawing fouls. So
that was more the larger issue that I had. Dave
Blackwell was the best player on the floor at times tonight,

(23:56):
so I think trying to get him involved a little bit.
But I've got full faith in Max. I've known him
for a few years now. I know the type of
work he puts in. It appears some of it might
be just a little mental right now, and like Guard said,
a lot of that is on the other guys to
kind of help lift him out of it. I loved
what I saw from Blackwell after that miss. I don't
know if you saw that, Nat lifted his hat up,

(24:17):
patted him on the shoulder. I mean that is leadership.
That's a damn good teammate.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
And talking about damn good teams. Dusty May comes over
from Florida Atlantic to take over Michigan this year at
Florida Atlantic. If those you may have forgotten two years ago,
is in the final four, right, This is a team
that has gone deep. He takes himself and Vlad Golden
and some other stuff here to Michigan, and you got
the rare chance to kind of hear from everybody from Michigan. Right,

(24:43):
You don't often get to hear from that many people.
So what's the message from Michigan? Is they come out
of this one with a win? I love that question,
broser Uh.

Speaker 7 (24:51):
You know what, I'm starting to see how highly thought
of Garden this program are throughout the Big ten.

Speaker 3 (24:59):
I think that was number one. He starts it.

Speaker 7 (25:01):
I think in his opening statement with we knew that
we had to play like a very sound game. These
guys aren't gonna beat themselves. This is a tough place
to play. It's a great program, and I like Dustin.
I think you can feel some of that sincerity that
you can also tell from, you know, a guy like
Guard and other coaches kind of around the Midwest, around
the country. In terms of his message, I think he

(25:23):
I almost got the sense he probably thought that there'd
be a little bit more potentially adjustments to kind of
that four or five pick and roll that we had
talked about. Now it helped Krowll getting in foul trouble, Like, okay,
now you got to go down from six to eleven
seven feet to six seven six. I mean there's a
clear strength advantage. And he even seemed very impressed with

(25:43):
Golden's play. I think they knew what they were getting
in Danny Wolf when he came over. He's obviously been
Golden's coach for years, but like this was a clinic
in terms of feel for the game and efficiency in
the pain.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
Nick Oson of twenty four to seven Sports, appreciate you
joining us during each show here and a big one
coming up on Saturday against Marquette. Are you going to
be down there at the Pizer Forum?

Speaker 7 (26:10):
You know it, my friend, I will be there. I
will be at Champagne next week and hopefully the game
in Indianapolis against Butler as well.

Speaker 4 (26:18):
Oh, there we go on the road, nick Osin. All right,
Nick Oson, appreciate you joining us as always. And now
it is time for everyone's favorite part of the show.
It is time for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 5 (26:31):
Hey, have you ever heard me? Here's the term fun fact.
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fact. You have a fun fact.

Speaker 4 (26:39):
I do first time in history this has happened at
eight games, five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists.
Spent a long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
We lat to tap the fun out here. This game's fun. Okay,
I don't know if that fact is fun?

Speaker 2 (26:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (26:55):
Are you fired up?

Speaker 5 (26:56):
I'm fired up for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 4 (26:59):
All Right, it is time for fun facts with Dave
here on the jan K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.
Couple of fun facts again, they're more fun after wins.
But a couple of facts here. After this sixty seven
to sixty four loss to Michigan, Wisconsin's undefeated streak it
ends at.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
Eight and oh.

Speaker 4 (27:20):
That is tied for the third best start to a
season in program history. It is tied with the nineteen
eighty six eighty seven season and is behind only the
twenty thirteen fourteen season where they went sixteen to zero
and the ninety three to ninety four season where they
started off eleven and oh. So streak has come to

(27:44):
an end. It comes to an end for everyone, including Kentucky,
by the way, when they.

Speaker 5 (27:49):
Had their undefeated streak.

Speaker 4 (27:50):
And speaking of Kentucky, they just got upset by Clemson
in the sec ACC Challenge. So there's a court storm
going on over there in Clemson.

Speaker 3 (27:59):
Interesting. So that was in the Elite eight last year. Yeah,
Kentucky fired their coach or moved off.

Speaker 4 (28:05):
Of Okay, Yeah, cal Pari left on his own to
Arkansas there.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
So yeah, coach Pope in his first year with Kentucky
trying to get them back on track. Unfortunate loss there,
but yeah, to speak to the start to this season,
I would I wouldn't trade it for anything eight and one.
You know, if there was an opportunity, right if someone said, hey,
you they could be nine and no, of course I
would take that. But reality is they had plenty of
opportunities early in the season to not come out on top,

(28:32):
and they found a way against the Arizona group that's
very good a team, and UCF that was held down,
I mean incredibly in the first round of the Greenbriar
tip off by Wisconsin, and then to pull one out
over a pit squad that's very talented. I'll take the
eight and one start much better than other options, but yeah,
I had to come to an end at some point.

(28:52):
I will I will wager this right now, no one
will go undefeated this season.

Speaker 5 (28:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (28:57):
I think that's I think that's a good wager over
there right now. You should include that us with wise
guys and there you go with Yeah, I'll let Mike
com yeah, there you go.

Speaker 5 (29:07):
All right.

Speaker 4 (29:08):
A couple more quick fun facts here. Max klesmt is
three for his last twenty one from Beyond the Arc.

Speaker 5 (29:16):
That is is not great going to the last.

Speaker 4 (29:19):
I know that fact is not very fun, but it
is a fact at the end of the day. John
Tanjay has led the Badgers in scoring in six of
the first nine games this season. He was Badger's leading
score tonight with eighteen points. And Wisconsin has now lost
three in a row to Michigan. This is their first

(29:41):
three game losing streak to the Wolverines since twenty seventeen
twenty eighteen where.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
They had that stretch there.

Speaker 5 (29:49):
Wisconsin, remember last year they were ranked.

Speaker 4 (29:51):
They were also ranked eleven in the country when they
went to Michigan in early February and they lost by four.
And now Wisconsin ranked eleventh in the country and they
lose to Michigan by three at home.

Speaker 5 (30:11):
Tough go.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
Hard to hear these guys as much as the other guys.
But we'll get there. We'll get there with these Michigan players.

Speaker 4 (30:17):
I'm sure, Oh yeah, ah, well, you know, you just
need someone to slap somebody and then there's gonna be
some hatred going across between these two programs. Anyways, coming up,
Greg Guard, he talked with Charlie Wills and Matt Lapey
after the game. We'll get his thoughts after this Badger's loss.
That's coming up. You're listening to the jan K Security

Speaker 2 (30:46):

up it in the Michigan native Shohn Blackwell Guess wisconsinly
forty five forty four A twelve forty remaining.

as we react to this Badger's sixty seven sixty four
loss to the Michigan Wolverines. Tough shooting day for Max Klesmt,

(31:28):
tough game for Stephen Krow. Greg Guard met up with
Matt Lepey and Charlie Wills after the game to talk
about his Badger's first loss of the season.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
It's coach guard settles in you. Greg, you were mentioning
before the game, he's all about Danny Wolf and you said,
kind of reminds you in some ways of Frank Kaminsky.
And unfortunately everybody got to see that tonight. Just a
really gifted play in gold And that's a heck of
a combination, isn't it.

Speaker 5 (31:55):
It is?

Speaker 8 (31:56):
You know, And if he would have told me that,
we would have held Trey Donaldson's gorless and held him
six for twenty five from three, you know, and and
make those two guys have to shoot a lot of twos,
which they hadn't done for the most part. And I thought,
we've been in decent shape. But you know, obviously we
got to shoot the ball better. We held him still

(32:16):
under one, Hey, Charlie under one. There's sixty seven points
on seventy possessions. So uh, But interiorly I thought we
did we didn't do a good job with you know,
with Golden and the four or five ball screen. We
got caught behind it. And then when we Golden did
get it deep. He just he was a grew up
man amongst boys there and obviously much bigger in person

(32:37):
than he looks on film. Even you know, he's a load.
But I thought we you know, we had good looks.
She goes six for twenty seven from three and as
I told the team, this is the lowest possession game
we've had all year. So when you get in these
type of games, the ability to defend. We didn't defend
the paint well. Rebounding, we gave up too many offensive
rebounds in the first half. A lot of them were

(32:58):
all long rebounds in wild possession and then untimely turnovers.
You know, we had a chance to we have a
breakaway and we don't execute a two on one. We
throw it to uh one of their guys, And you know,
we had a couple others were you know, just poor
decisions at the time that weren't forced by them. It
was just our poor decision making at that time that

(33:20):
when you're in one possession game, you'd like to have
a handful.

Speaker 5 (33:23):
Of those back.

Speaker 6 (33:24):
Yeah, what we noticed, and we kind of talked at
the beginning, was stopping that transition. Yeah, that was a
lot of points for them and I think it opened
up that that two man game. Is that something that
you guys feel coming into the Marquette game kind of
similarly set up they like to run a little bit.

Speaker 8 (33:40):
Yeah, I mean defensive transition is something we talked about
from day one. You know, Charlie, you have to understand
that how important it is to get back. And you know,
they even got us on a couple of made baskets,
you know where we scored and they were at the
other end right away. So I'll look through that on
film and see where you know, who could have covered
up what, you know, but credit to them to put

(34:01):
it coming right back at us. And and uh, like
I said, we had some looks that I thought we
could have knocked down or have knocked down in the
past that we don't tonight. And between transition defense, the
four or five stuff in the paint, you know, I
thought they went to that two man game quite a
bit with those two guys, and you know, a couple
untimely turnovers that that make the difference.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
Well a plus side for you guys though, Like John
Blackwell went through a stretch where he basically said, okay,
just get on my back, I'll I'll help offensive glass
sixteen points. He goes on a stretch where hescores six straight.
I mean, his role is different than a year ago.
But just watching how this guy is growing, Yeah really, yeah,
I know he did.

Speaker 8 (34:41):
He carried us there for quite a while, you know,
and on the offensive glass he was he was hungry,
you know. Then we got to get Klesmic going, you know,
and then he's still struggling, uh, obviously, so we got
to get him off this night, so to speak. And
he's a much better shooter than one for nine. And
you know, I thought the most for the most part
he decent looks obviously the one at half court or the.

Speaker 5 (35:04):
Late one there.

Speaker 2 (35:06):
The effected that in.

Speaker 8 (35:07):
But you know, credit to Michigan, you know, they they
banked on us not being able to bang in some
threes and and uh did a good job of gumming
up the paint and made it hard in terms of
that regard. And and we're able to get enough offense
going to get past us.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
We say this all the time. Beauty of basketball is
you get up and you get ready for the next one.
It's right around the corner. So here here we go, right.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
Big adjustments like you mentioned exactly. It's it's we'll see
how we respond.

Speaker 8 (35:37):
This is the first adversity we've seen, and you know,
let's respond. And I told as I told them just
a little bit ago, this this was going to force
us to grow. You don't want to just cruise through
things and not get things. You know, you can have
issues in transition defense, which we've had, and you can
have some defensive rebounding issues which we've had, but you
win the game and the spotlight doesn't doesn't burn quite

(35:58):
as much. So now you know we're able to you know,
dissect this a little deeper and and uh, you know,
do better job and get better because of it.

Speaker 2 (36:06):
You know, tack of a game. Buckle up, it is well,
Big ten Basketball's back. Appreciate your time. Great thanks. Badger's
head coach Greg Guard joining us Michigan Windsday tonight. Sixty
seven is sixty four?

Speaker 5 (36:17):
All right? That was Badger's head coach Greg Guard.

Speaker 4 (36:20):
After this one, Wisconsin baalts for the first time this season,
sixty seven to sixty four. And then coming up next Nick,
it's it's the big one, the first real, real ye
on the road against Marquette number five, twelve thirty tip
on Saturday at five ser Forum.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
It would be a great day for Max Klesman to
get back on track because we know how much he
has done for this program against Marquette, especially last year
twenty one points against the gold Eagles here at the
Cole Center. Let's do it, Max, Let's get back on
track with a few threes against the Golden Eagles. Beat
Shaka Smart and Marquette yet again. That'd be a great
way to get back on track.

Speaker 4 (36:59):
It would with Johnson is gonna need it. They're gonna
need that bounced back game in their first true road
test of the season. Tip Off is gonna be a
twelve thirty on Saturday. Pregame coverage we'll begin right here
at eleven thirty and then of course stick around afterwards
for the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show as
we react to what hopefully is going to be a

(37:22):
Badgers win over Marquette. We will see how it all
shakes out, but that is going to be coming up
on Saturday once again. The final score tonight Michigan sixty seven,
Wisconsin sixty four.

Speaker 5 (37:36):
For Casey James, our.

Speaker 4 (37:37):
Producer for Nick Brucewitz, I'm Dave Gasper.

Speaker 5 (37:40):
Thank you for listening.

Speaker 4 (37:41):
This has been the jan K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
So here we go. Fut In for Golden It's off
the rim. What are the rebound with two? With one
three quarter score shot, Tucha off the rim, no good
and Michigan escapes with a three point win him in Madison.

Speaker 5 (38:08):
Oh so close.
