Speaker 1 (00:22):
Now, here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Awitz.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
Welcome into the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper along with Nick bruce Witz.
The Badgers finish up non conference play with an eighty
to sixty win over UW Milwaukee. We invite you to
join the conversation with us on the hotline. Six oh
eight three two one thirteen ten. That is the number

(00:51):
to call in. It was not the prettiest game for
this Badger's team, especially on offense, as they struggled from
three point range. But with SI and strength and the paint,
Wisconsin was able to cruise to victory. This was a
final tune up before conference play. The defense looked better,
but the offense seemed a little out of sync. We

(01:11):
were looking for this team to inspire some confidence in
us heading into Big ten action. Nick, how much does
this game inspire confidence in you?

Speaker 5 (01:20):
Didn't change a thing. Man, I didn't change anything positive
or negative.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
It was just MIH. This entire night was just MIH.
The Badgers did what they needed to do. They won
the game.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
It didn't look like they felt a level of urgency
like they were playing a Big ten opponent, because they weren't.
Like that was part of the broadcast, but you kept
mentioning it, let's just get to Big ten play, get
to Big ten play. This looks like a team that
is just ready to move to the next portion of
their season. And that's what we saw tonight. Wisconsin played
well enough to win. They did not shoot well enough

(01:52):
to win. If this were perdue on Saturday, they definitely
did not do enough in regards to taking advantage of
the poor shooting performance from Milwaukee. I thought that Wisconsin
was able to get out to an early lead and
just make that hold and then naturally as the game
comes to its conclusion, they created a little bit more separation.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
Yeah, we UWM was able to get themselves, you know,
a little bit of a run. They got it to
single digits there for a little bit early on in
the second half. But yeah, then Wisconsin able to pull away.
Nick Boyd and John Blackwell started getting aggressive, you know,
making drives to the basket, and it was, you know,
great to see for Wisconsin to see a little bit

(02:35):
of that energy, because, yeah, they seem to be lacking
it a little bit for this game. And you know,
UWM is the one that's playing on a back to
back here. I mean they just played last night. They
were playing three games in four days, so that that's
a tough stretch for the Panthers there. But and this
team had the last eight days off and you know,

(02:56):
they seemed to kind of struggle with this one. And
we kind of talked about this a little bit earlier
on in the season when they were taking on the
teams like SIU Edwardsville. It's like, come on, like, let's
let's bring on a little bit of a challenge. It's
hard to kind of get up for some of those
games against the Northern Illinois, the Ball States, the SIU
eas and then it's like, okay, let's get to a
real challenge in BYU. And then they got pantsed by

(03:18):
BYU by twenty eight point, right. So that's what concerns
me though, Nick, as we look ahead to Big Ten
play and you're gonna be facing Purdue right out of
the gate, number five team in the country, and it's like,
let's get to Big ten play. Let's take on a
real challenging team here in Purdue. You know something where
the offense seems a little out of sync. That kind
of concerns me heading into that game.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
Yeah, it absolutely should. Wisconsin has not proven anything this
season quite yet. Right, They've won the games that they
need to win, that they're supposed to win, They've lost
the ones that they are in a position of I
think underdog. If you look at tonight's matchup, you say, okay,
where did Wisconsin create the separation? Well, after the game

(04:00):
was tied at two to two, it became eighteen to two.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Wisconsin goes on a sixty to zero run.

Speaker 5 (04:04):
From that moment on, which was like four minutes into
the game, Wisconsin only outscores Milwaukee.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
By four points.

Speaker 5 (04:13):
Like, yeah, there was nothing outside of that early burst
for Wisconsin that felt like this is a really good
basketball team taking advantage of a softer matchup, albeit arguably
the best team in the Horizon League. I think that
Purdude's gonna be a hell of a test again on Saturday.
I'm not trying to be negative, but I do think
that Wisconsin's gonna really have to prove me wrong there.

(04:35):
I think that they're they're not ready for it.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
They're not. But yeah, it doesn't.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
Mean they can't lose Saturday, if that's the case, and
then play tough teams the rest of the way and
then get into a groove.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Yeah, it just may take some time, because they certainly
did not seem in a groove tonight, especially from from
three point range, which is such an important part of
the offense. I mean, more than half their shots this
season have been from beyond the arc, and today there
were four of twenty two. They started off one for eleven.
Both teams in this game were incredibly cold from three.

(05:09):
Both started off one for eleven from three. UWM finished
three of twenty two, Wisconsin four of twenty two. Just
really tough because that is kind of the crux of
this offense. Now, you know that there were a lot
of great points in the paint forty six points in
the paint tonight, so it was just kind of it
was a lot of twos, There was a lot of layups,

(05:30):
it was a lot of being in the paint, which
which is great it's great to have that. You need
to have those paint touches. Nolan Winter getting the ball,
Biliowskis getting the ball and just being able to play
through there. But when the three points, you know, shot
is such a crucial part of this offense, of the
entire plan, and they're that cold with frankly a lot

(05:54):
of open looks too. It's I don't think Milwaukee was
defending them particularly tough on the three point shot. They
were just breaking them.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
Yeah, And not to mention, a couple of the threes
that went in tonight were from Hayden Jones his first
three of the season, and Braden Carrington, who didn't enter
the game until seven minutes left. Right, So like the
familiar characters for Wisconsin, Rody gets one, Winter gets one.
Outside of that, Boyd and Blackwell only took three total threes.
So maybe there was a concerted effort tonight by Greg

(06:26):
Gard to his starting lineup to I doubt he said
avoid the three, but maybe he said push it into
the paint. I want to see what you guys can
do in this in this form of basketball, because typically
you're seeing Blackwell put up six or seven threes a
game or Boyd putting up five like these guys they
just simply didn't put him up tonight.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
And that's fine with me.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
But if you're gonna beat a team like Purdue, if
you're gonna go on a run, he you're knowing who
you have on the horizon Ucla Michigan, like, you're gonna
need to make threes and make them in bunches. In
Wisconsin is now gone through a stretch where we haven't
seen what we thought they would be, what we had
seen all of last year and what we saw early
this season.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, I think that effort on the three points attempts
certainly changed after they started one for eleven there from
the group, because they took eleven threes through the first
fourteen minutes of the game and then they had just
eleven three point attempts the remainder of the way the
final what would that be twenty four to twenty five

(07:30):
minutes of the game. I mean, they just basically stopped
attempting threes. It's like, Okay, let's just focus on getting
into the paint, being able to pull away there, getting
the shots in and just getting the buckets and keep
things moving. And they were able to do that they're
able to be successful there and take advantage against frankly
a weaker interior defense from UWM. They just simply did

(07:54):
not have the size to compete with Wisconsin inside, and
Wisconsin was able to take it, and that just had
to be the focus because you could tell they didn't
have it from three. So go, okay, let's just get
in the paint, let's get some easy shots up and
just be able to run away with this thing and
get through it and look ahead to Big Ten play

(08:14):
coming up on Saturday. So it ends up being a
twenty point win for Wisconsin here over u W Milwaukee.
Like you said, Nick, taking care of business. I mean,
they just did what they had to do. It was
kind of met you know, they needed to work on
some defensive things, and I think they were able to
have some success there, you know, looking fairly strong on defense,
especially in the first half. But that was really kind

(08:38):
of the focus this game. Kind of a tune up there.
You get everyone into the game, you get eleven different
players scoring a bucket, and now you're going to see
things really start to tighten up in terms of the
rotation and in terms of how things are going to
play because as great guard kind of put it there.
It's like you want to see different variations which groups
can maybe work together on the court. We saw Jack

(08:58):
Robinson early on in this game. We saw a lot
of Zach Kinsinger off the bench, so a lot of
different types of rotations, different types of lineups guard was
trying here.

Speaker 5 (09:08):
Yeah, like what we saw from Kinsinger in particular, I mean,
I don't know if I anticipated seeing eighteen minutes from
him tonight.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Right, So he plays one one.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
Fewer minute than Andrew Roadie, he matches Austin Rapp in
terms of floor time. Like this game got away from
Milwaukee late, so maybe Kinsinger gets a mad and run
there and knowing he would have been put in the
game had the starters been in any way, But like,
this is the dude that wasn't playing this season that
I think most anticipated was going to be a red shirt.

(09:38):
I bet the coaching staff if we hit him on
the lie detector test, you know they'd fail if they said, no,
we thought he'd play, Like I think they were planning
on him not playing, and due to circumstances, maybe effort
or consistency or maybe just intensity, they had to put
him in there. This year, they had the injury to Blackwell,
so he plays last game. But I mean, this dude,

(09:59):
Carrington plays the last what seven minutes, and this is it.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
I mean Kensinger.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Kensinger plays double, that triple, that triple that coach says,
he's a bulldog, So he's in there, he's playing like one.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Yeah, he was able to get a steal on a
simple outlet pass for EWM and you know, just some
some great play from him. So yeah, I mean, it's
an incredible improvement for him from when the season started
to now. I mean, with what he's apparently shown in
practice to earn the minutes here. So I think we're
gonna end up seeing quite a bit of him as
we get into Big Ten conference play. You know, just

(10:37):
these these final two non conference games against Central Michigan
and UWM that that's not gonna be the last we
see of Zach Kinsinger this year. So he's putting himself
in that rotation and he's earning some more minutes here.
So that's certainly very good to see. But you know,
now we're we're gonna see how much he's really proven
himself once we get to Purdue, once we get to

(10:59):
Big Ten conference play, because that will be the ultimate
test of how much Greg Guard trusts this freshman in
some big time moments. You know, as we get to
the next couple of months here of the regular season,
which is going to be a lot of fun. Big
Ten Conference play is going to be fun, which leads
to plenty of fun facts which we're going to get
to on the other side. Bonus fun facts here, Nick

(11:21):
Osin from twenty four to seven Sports. He is going
to join us later on in the show as well,
as he always does. We'll get his thoughts on this
game for the Badgers, and also we'll hear from Greg
Guard once again coming up later on in the show
as well. Wisconsin is the winner here tonight, eighty to
sixty over you w Milwaukee. We'll be right back with

(11:42):
fun facts and more. On the other side. You're listening
to the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Take it Away. Robinson comes up with a four Wisconsin.
Here's Hayden Jones left side line on the front court
for the Badgers. You'll throw to Boyd left point dark
to the Garlock low on the left goes up blacked Badgers.
What goal tendy they'll get it count the basket for
Will Garlock and a foul as well Atisaiah Pipple White Turt.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
Welcome back to the J and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame show. Jay and K Security Solutions from home theaters
to smart lighting to a universal home control go online
to Jksecurity dot Com. Dave Gasper here with you along
with Nick Brucewiz. The Badgers are the winners here tonight,
eighty to sixty over YOUWM, and this was a important

(12:39):
game for them as they finish up non conference play
and get ready now for a big ten play starting
up next week. You're leading score tonight, Nick Boyd with
sixteen points, followed by Nolan Winter with fourteen points in
twenty one minutes. And those are the only two players
in double digits for this Badgers team here tonight. On

(13:00):
Blackwell with eight, Andrew Rody with seven, Hayden Jones with eight,
Andrew or Austin Rapp was six, Braden Carrington five, Zach
Kensinger five, Will Garlik five. I mean they were spreading
the spreading the love around here in this game, Nick,
Eleven different Badgers got into the scoring column.

Speaker 5 (13:18):
Yeah, it felt like tonight was kind of you get
some you get some, you get some. Blackwell did not
play the form of basketball that we had seen him
play for the majority of the season at this point.
I'm sure they're kind of leaning into giving him a
workload as time goes on, getting him ready to go
for Saturday's matchup. Five shots tonight for John Blackwell as well, well,

(13:39):
below a season average. So yeah, no one needed to
take command because the Badgers had command early, right. I
think that this is a team that Wisconsin knew that
they should beat, and they did beat, and they beat
up pretty early eighteen to two. The early lead for
Wisconsin and Milwaukee was pesky. They were not going to
give up. They got it within double single digits excuse me,
in the second half. So yeah, you look at tonight's game,

(14:03):
who you most impressed by? It's hard to say anyone
besides some of those young guns that got some extended times.
Zat Kinsinger two of seven from the field, not necessarily
the most impressive clip, but it felt like his effort
was something that was infectious. Will Garlock two for two
from the field. He has four rebounds, he got to
the free throw line in and one opportunity he missed

(14:23):
it like this is a guy that you think can
be something special down the road this year. So you
got a little bit of exposure to some of the
young guns. Hayden Jones another one of those knocks down
his first.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
Three of the year.

Speaker 5 (14:34):
Those are the dudes that need to develop maybe be
part of the picture down the road this season. Is
significant role players as it stands now, maybe of those
three you'd circle Garlock and say that he might be
the most significant just because of where that front court
is at in terms of depth.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
Yeah, exactly. I mean you're going to need a lot
of these guys throughout the season, you know, as it
goes along. And John blackwell, he did miss the Central
Michigan game ye with an injury, so he did not play.
So it was great to see him get back out
there for this one. But also, you know, in twenty
seven minutes, you know you're trying to you don't need

(15:12):
to have him play thirty eight minutes in this kind
of game. You know, you can still kind of take
it easy a little bit, but you kind of shake
the rust off after missing the last game, so you
don't necessarily need as much from him. Nolan Winter also
left last game with an ankle issue and he's able
to come back and play in this one, but it

(15:32):
seemed like, you know, Greg Guard was having him on
a little bit of a pitch count. They wanted to
manage his limits, or manage his minutes a little bit.
Just twenty one minutes of action for Nolan Winter in
this game, but very effective in those twenty one minutes,
with fourteen points and seven rebounds, so a couple of
rebounds shy of a double double. So he's not adding
that to our fun facts here on the show because

(15:54):
typically he's Nolan Winter is a staple in fun facts
with what he's been doing this year. But that of
course means it is time Nick for our favorite segment
of the show, fun Facts with Dave. Hey, have you
ever heard me?

Speaker 3 (16:09):
Here's the term fun fact.

Speaker 4 (16:11):
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fact.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
You're a fun fact.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
I do.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
First time in history this has happened that eight games,
five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists. Spent a
long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
The fun out here, This game's fun. Okay, I don't
know if that fact is fun?

Speaker 6 (16:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Are you fired up?

Speaker 4 (16:33):
I'm fired fired up for fun facts with Dave. Alright,
so the fun facts are always more fun after a win,
especially when after another over another in state school. Here
Wisconsin taking on UW Milwaukee. Wisconsin is now thirty four
and two all time against UWM. This is a very

(16:57):
one sided matchup historic but weirdly somehow the two losses
to WM have both come at the Cole Center, including
one in twenty fifteen, which is wild, you know, just
kind of bizarre to think about that.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Right, the final four?

Speaker 4 (17:15):
Yeah, well maybe it was the season after, might have
been that fifteen to sixteen season, Yeah, I would imagine,
because yeah, it wouldn't be conference play, so I think
that would have to be when it was.

Speaker 5 (17:25):
But still, it's coming off of a national championship appearance
with some familiar faces still around. But wow, good a
good job by the Badgers to night getting the win,
not allowing that.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
To happen exactly first time these two teams have played
since twenty nineteen, so yeah, it's been a while since
they've rehashed this. John Blackwell with eight points tonight, and
he is moving up to sole possession of forty fourth
all time in Badger's scoring history with one thousand, seventy
three points. Next up for him to pass at forty

(18:00):
three Josh Gasser. Familiar face speaking of that twenty fifteen squad,
Josh Gasser with one thy seventy five points in Badger's history.
So John black Wolf moving up in the history books
here for Wisconsin. The sixteen to oh run that the
Badgers went on in the first half there to pull
away from two to two to eighteen to two, it

(18:22):
was their first sixteen to oh run of the season.
The longest run that they had this year was fit
was a fifteen oh run against Campbell in the season opener,
So the longest run of the season for this Badger squad.
Great to get that in. Wisconsin has now won nineteen
consecutive non conference home games, the longest active streak in

(18:46):
the Big Ten and now tied for the fifth longest
streak in program history. So in order to keep moving up,
they're gonna have to wait until next year to extend
that non conference streak. But yeah, nineteen straight games dates
back to a twenty twenty three loss to Tennessee when
Tennessee was a top ten ranked team in the country.

Speaker 5 (19:08):
Yeah, and I think I remember you and I being here.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
For that one.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah, we were at that game and it was it
was a closer battle down the stretch and Dalton connect
was just lighted up. So long story short, Wisconsin undefeated
here at the.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Cole Center this year.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
Eight No, Now, it's really you know, it's it's important
to take care of your home court and take advantage
of those games. But it's gonna be tested coming up here,
certainly this Saturday with Purdue coming to town.

Speaker 4 (19:35):
Yeah, it certainly is. In some final fun facts here,
the Badgers they made twenty free throws tonight. That wasn't
their best free throw shooting performance twenty of thirty two
sixty three percent from the line, but they made twenty
of them. And that's their fourth game this season making
twenty free throws, and they are four to o in

(19:55):
those games, so making, you know, getting twenty three points
tends to to victories. Who could have thought. Also, just
nine turnovers in this game, the seventh time this season
the Badgers have had just single digit turnovers And might
have guessed this nick, but the Badgers are seven to
zero in those games where they only have single digit turnovers.

(20:17):
So again another piece of the recipe for success, make
a lot of free throws and don't turn the ball
over and you end up winning a lot of games.
Who would have thought.

Speaker 5 (20:28):
I I can't believe we finally cracked the code, Dave.
I mean, it feels like we should tell this to
the coaching staff that, yeah, this is something they've overlooked.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
I'm gonna say, why don't we do this every game? Right?

Speaker 5 (20:40):
And it's what they did last year? I mean, we're
being honestly, we're a far away where a lot farther
from from last year than I thought we would be
in terms of free throw percentage like historic season last year.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
Did I think we would do it again?

Speaker 5 (20:54):
No, but I thought we had some familiar faces and
they knew what they were doing.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
Clearly, they know how to teach throw.

Speaker 5 (21:00):
Shooting some of these big men right now for Wisconsin,
they're far from consistent.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Garlock, That shooting form will get better. I'm sure as
his career goes on.

Speaker 5 (21:09):
Here, GREPI, late in the game, they were just heaves
that bounced five feet in the air off the back
of the rim. But I'm impressed that Wisconsin was able
to kind of play a different brand of basketball tonight
than what they had in their wins this season. Like obviously,
turning the ball over less than ten times is the

(21:32):
is the goal.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
Turning it over zero times is the is the goal.

Speaker 5 (21:36):
But they were able to get to the free throw
line a lot, they were able to get into the
paint a lot. They did not rely on the three
as much as they have throughout the entire season so far.
I would wonder where twenty two to three point attempts
ranks on the season. I don't think it's gonna be
towards the top, Right, they put up a lot of threes,
and tonight was not three heavy. It was a lot

(21:58):
of trying to move the ball in transition, a lot
of trying to get the ball into the paint, and
a lot of different mouths that were fed. I think
in Purdue in that matchup on Saturday, you're going to
see a smaller rotation and a lot more emphasis on
guys like Blackwell and Boyd.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
Yeah, the Badgers came into this game averaging thirty two
to three point attempts per game, which ranked twelfth in
the country. So that number going down.

Speaker 5 (22:26):
That might have been the lowest, right, I mean, it's
possible tonight was their lowest in terms of three point
percentage or excuse me, in three point attempts possible, also
in percentage only shooting eighteen percent.

Speaker 4 (22:36):
Well, let me let me look up the there we
go here it is. It's not their lowest on the season.
That's opponent. Hold on a second here, good dudee, Yes,
it actually is. It is our lowest. One I was
looking at opponent.

Speaker 5 (22:55):
Three percentage night was tonight.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
Yeah, worth worst percentage night was tonight, and also lowest
attempts in a game where tonight previously the lowest was
against Villanova when they attempted twenty three three pointers, but
they made ten of them in that game. Much better clip, yeah,
much better.

Speaker 3 (23:15):
Clap healthy John Blackwell in that game that.

Speaker 5 (23:18):
Helps, Yeah, a little bit right, wrap, maybe playing a
little bit more aggressive brand played potentially more minutes.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
That was a longer game.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
Too, right, so that that went into overtime. So you'd
think that that game would have been the one in
which that they had like the lowest three point attempts
per minute, you know what I mean, if he really
got into the weeds with it, because they played the
extra period there.

Speaker 4 (23:43):
Yeah, but yeah, they did not do well in that
extra extra period in that game that was that was
a rough one for the Badgers, but it was not tonight.
It was not a rough one. They were able to
uh it was rough three point shooting wise, but the
result is good. You get a twenty point victory over
UWM and UH now you can simply move on to

(24:06):
conference play. So it's going to make for you know,
ultimately a very happy Great Guarden. And what makes for
a very happy two of us is that Nick Osen
is going to join us on the other side. We're
gonna get his thoughts on this Badger's victory here tonight
and how this team is looking heading into conference play

(24:27):
starting up this weekend. We'll ask about that and a
whole lot more coming up next. Stick with us. This
is the Jane K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
Bill Awska's rhythm dribbled rhythm.

Speaker 3 (24:49):
Is out.

Speaker 2 (24:49):
Let's away, Kenzinger the steel right block, push it up.
This but a foul, but there's that toldogs and Great
Guard talks about and describing Zach Kinsinger, who are earns
two free throws.

Speaker 4 (25:03):
Welcome back to the j and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame Show. From home Security to Automation, Jay and K
Security Solutions. As you covered, go to jksecurity dot com
for more info, and we when we look for more info,
we turned to our friend Nick Osin from twenty four
to seven Sports, who joins us now covering this Badgers team.

(25:24):
Nick I asked this question of other Nick Nick Berswitz,
to start the show.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
This game.

Speaker 4 (25:30):
We're looking for this team to inspire some confidence in
us heading into Big ten conference play. How much did
this game inspire confidence in you? Nick Osin?

Speaker 6 (25:41):
Yeah, guys, great to be talking with you again. And
you know what, I'm gonna go off of that dame
earlier today, Right, we talked about confidence, and we talked
about a complete game. Now, I think obviously you could say,
you know, you certainly want three point shooting to be
better and really things of that nature. But as a
whole man, I'm sure you guys would agree this is
one that never really felt super close, even when it

(26:03):
was cut to nine, Like I didn't get defense and
anybody who's really worried. So if I could pick something
that maybe didn't inspire the most confidence, obviously you're looking
for better shooting, but what did I love how coach
Guard has been going deeper into this bench, and he's
really been saying like nine, ten, eleven, twelve players at times,
and I think it's really going to be beneficial, Dave.

(26:25):
Obviously you're not going to count on eleven twelve players
in every night of Big ten play, but just to
see these guys get some opportunities, I think my mind
certainly goes to those freshmen, especially, like that's gonna help
it and I think that's going to be really big
and beneficial going forward. So for that as well as
the defense, Dave, I think that I did take some

(26:46):
things that would inspire confidence. Obviously, they probably win this
game by stay thirty thirty two if kind of the
starter's stay in so that really would have been fine
in my eyes.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
Nick, how much of the EU use of the bench,
like digging deep, going ten twelve guys do you think
is a result of the team still searching for a
core group or do you think it's just a product
of where they are in the season in trying to
round out those final group of I don't know, three
role players.

Speaker 6 (27:19):
Yeah, Bruce, that's that's a really good question, And to
be honest, I think it is a little bit of both.
Kind of on that second one, I do think it's
a little bit where they are in the season and
who they're facing a little bit too, right, and that's
no shot at all. As I said on Your Guys
Great Show earlier, Panthers are a really, really, really good
Horizon League program, and Coach Gard would say the same.

(27:40):
But obviously you expect the Big ten team to win
in that. But I think also started to I started
the press of tonight asking Coach Guard about Kinsinger and
kind of these opportunities, and I think that he had
some great steps. Specifically, it's just another point guard that
you can really trust if Boyd needs a breather, or
if he's in foul trouble right, or really something like

(28:01):
that next. So in that sense, I think you are
adding a little bit in terms of just who you
can get in that rotation. I think it makes a
lot of sense. And frankly, I think you're so focused
on this year. Of course, as we are, we're not
even really in the middle of the season, but to
see these freshmen already getting these opportunities and generally making
an impact, I think you've also got to be excited

(28:23):
about the core going forward, especially if guys like Blackwell
Winter are back and healthy.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
Talking with Nick Osin of Badgers two four seven here
on the Janeksecurty Solutions basketball post game show.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
Nick.

Speaker 4 (28:37):
Earlier on in the season, when the Badgers, you know,
won their first couple of games, you know, the kind
of the easy ones, the Campbell's and Northern Illinois, the
SIU Edwardsville's, you could tell this team it was kind of,
you know, they were really kind of looking for a
real challenge to come up, and that's what they ended
up with with BYU where they ended up losing by
twenty eight. You know, these past couple of games Center

(29:00):
Michigan Milwaukee, it seems kind of like, Okay, this team's
kind of looking for that next actual challenge. How prepared
do you think this team is for that challenge against
Perdue coming up on Saturday.

Speaker 6 (29:14):
Yeah, David's again a great question. I think they're about
as prepared probably as you could get. You know, maybe
you would have loved to squeezing one more power conference
team or like kind of a high major team and
maybe see another victory there, I guess you could say.
But like they've played some really good teams, even though
they haven't always kind of gone in favor of the Badgers,

(29:35):
I think that they're starting to play through the post
a little bit more. Obviously, if you go against any
Matt Painter or team, they're going to need to be
ready in the post on both tends. So in that sense, look,
you're going against one of the best groups in the nation.
Obviously Badgers will be underdogs and we'll see how I'm
actually excited to really see how the fan base response
because you don't see too many Saturday night primetime national

(29:59):
TV games for hoops here in this great city of Madison.
So all in all, Dave, I think that they're in
a good spot. You know, maybe not great, maybe not
perfect going into a game like that, but hey, if
you're not ready for big ten play when the lights
come on Saturday, you're gonna snap into things really quickly,
because as we know, it starts with a bang like

(30:19):
that and it's not going to slow down at all
the rest of the way.

Speaker 5 (30:23):
Nick, when you look at the front court, we came
into the season with an expectation that Nolan Winter is
going to be the guy, and that's obvious he is.
And then after that it was okay, Austin Rad's gonna
knock down some threes. Austin Rads can be this offensive
star and he hasn't been that. Bieliowskis has taken over
in the starting lineup, one of those true freshmen that
we've mentioned, playing a lot of minutes. And then there's

(30:46):
Will Carlock, another true freshman. Like, if I'm worried about anything,
it's about how that group, the front court will stack
up with the front courts here in the Big Ten.
Knowing that Purdue is elite, knowing that Michigan's elite, and
knowing that this is a conference it kind of prides
itself on points in the paint and strong front courts.

Speaker 6 (31:05):
Yeah, Nick, I mean, you know, I feel like this
is one where we re we're a little bit clairvoyant, right.
He said it before I think they even played a game.
I said, the young guys are going to have to
grow up quickly and as good as Nolan Winter is
and you guys know, I really think the world of
him as a player as well as just a person
helping to leave this team. He's one man. He can't

(31:28):
play two positions. I at the same time, you know,
he can play the four and five, but he can't
cover both at the same time, and he's not going
to play forty minutes a night, so you need other
guys now. I think if I'm coach guard in the staff,
I'm continuing to give Garlock more moments when you're able
to right. Obviously, there are going to be growing pains,
and he's talked about that, but nobody on the team

(31:51):
can do exactly what Will does with his ceilings. He's
very tall, he's strong, he's athletic. I think his defensive
acumen is pretty good. Obviously, you're still learning with some
of these things. I've seen him kind of take over
scoring wise at the high school level. We'll see kind
of when that comes along really in these ranks, Nick,
But you know there are going to be growing things.

(32:12):
I'm not gonna.

Speaker 7 (32:14):
Like.

Speaker 5 (32:14):
I mean, he's as big as a freshman we've seen
and I don't know how long physically he has filled
out more than what you would see typically.

Speaker 6 (32:22):
Oh yeah, he's strong, Jackies. He's had a great offseason
coming in. I mean, I wish you guys could have heard,
you know, just some of the ways that the staff
and some of the guys would talk about Will really
coming into the year. So that obviously opened some eyes
and some expectations, and I think he's showing that. I
think that this class could end up being probably a
top three or four class that Guard has ever had.

(32:44):
And it's ten eleven seasons here, but you know, just
at times, it's going to be a process and you've
got to be ready for that and make sure that
the guards are doing what they can on the perimeter
as well.

Speaker 4 (32:55):
Yeah, it's it's incredible, especially to be able to put
on and wait and put on muscle at that size.
It is not easy. It takes a lot of calories,
a lot of carbs in order to be able to
get that done. But Nick Osin as always fantastic work.
We appreciate you hopping on and be sure to follow

(33:16):
Nick on Twitter at the Real Nick Osin. He's gonna
have everything Wisconsin Badgers over there and at Badgers two
four seven as we got Big Ten conference play coming up,
got football transfer portal coming up starting on Friday, so
lots of great stuff, So be sure to follow Nick
at the Real Nick Osin. And Nick, we'll talk to

(33:37):
you again on Saturday.

Speaker 6 (33:40):
I look forward to it. Dave, I really appreciate that guy.
Thank you and Happy New Year.

Speaker 4 (33:43):
Okay, happy New Year. There he goes Nick Osin from
twenty four to seven Sports joining us here. The Badgers
are the winners here tonight, eighty to sixty over UWM,
and head coach Greg Gard has to be pleased with
a twenty point victory. We'll get his thoughts on this
win coming up next. This is the JANK Security Solutions

(34:03):
Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
And therefore Wisconsint s. I left each Charrington, he'll try
at three that brought rain and he hit it. I
mean that bad boy had a lot of air under it.
He hitched the triple goes breaton Carrias at eighty to
fifty six Wisconsint with a minute and a half remaining.

Speaker 4 (34:31):
Welcome back to the J and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame Show. J and K Security Solutions can give you
the power you never thought possible. Learn how Jay and
K can integrate your world. Visit jksecurity dot com. Dave
Gasper here with you along with Nick Bruswiz. The Badgers
are the winners here tonight, eighty to sixty over you
W Milwaukee as they wrap up non conference play and

(34:55):
look ahead to Big at ten play coming up on
Saturday as a off with five ranked perdue at the
Coal Center, So be sure to be there get loud,
because Nick, I think a lot of the student section
is still gonna be gone over j term, which may
may make it difficult to have the home court advantage

(35:15):
that Wisconsin is used to.

Speaker 5 (35:17):
Yeah, it's really interesting how it feels annually, I mean
inevitably that there's gonna be a game here of substance
without the fans, and this is the one. So maybe
this will draw some of those students back to town.
I know a lot of the students are Wisconsin natives. Otherwise,
I'm sure that there are ways to fill those seats
with other people.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
It's gonna be a great game.

Speaker 5 (35:37):
I feel like Purdue always brings such a great atmosphere
here at the Coal Center. It's gonna be an opportunity
to get that statement win that has evaded them to
this point in the year.

Speaker 4 (35:46):
Yeah, maybe we can get them there. With Brian Butch
bribing them with free pretzels that he ended up getting
throughout the game, and he offered one to Greg Guard.
As Greg Gard met up with Brian Butch and Matt
pay after the game.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Coach Guard ready to join us here court side after
the Badger's defeating Milwaukee eighty to sixty to improve to
nine and four in the season. Yeah yeah, coach, but
you but it's becoming it's become a thing.

Speaker 8 (36:16):
Here.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
He's got to get his carbel loaded back to the
Fox valland.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
There fantastic.

Speaker 4 (36:22):
I got some cheese for you too.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
You gotta have that too, So will we do? Brian
Brian found out quick Chris Brian found out quickly. The
media theme is free is for me. I'll take three
four grants and the win tonight as we somehow get
back to basketball here. We were talking coach that night
where the three point shots not falling? Can you guys

(36:47):
to handle that? Can they score other ways? Can they
do all the other things? I'd say they gave you
a pretty good answer here.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
Yeah we did.

Speaker 8 (36:53):
We found, you know, other ways to score. You know,
obviously you you want to shoot it well better than that.
But thought for us to be able to still put
up eighty with not shooting and not shooting the free
throw line like we should have, you know, and if
you make two or three more threes in that first half,
that that leads balloons even more. But you know a

(37:14):
lot of different guys, different combinations. You know, some of
us foul trouble. Some you know Nolan's we I wanted
him pretty much on a pitch count if we could,
and you know, just find this group is is one
of those groups that it's gonna take by committee. You know,
it's gonna and it's gonna be different guys at different nights.
Some night it'll be you know, one guy getting a

(37:35):
little more minutes off the bench, and maybe somebody gets
more minutes than a starter. Just trying to find, you know,
who's gonna have the hot hand and who can be
the most consistent to make us the most consistent. So
and I think all in all, defensively, I thought we did.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
Some good things.

Speaker 8 (37:50):
You know, we let the ball get in the second half.
I thought we filed too much. But some of that's
just the flow of the game. And I thought it
got real choppy and a lot of whistles. It took
like what two hours for yeah, we just yeah, exactly,
we need to have a We need to get like
baseball and get the pitch count.

Speaker 7 (38:08):
Absolutely, you look at what Jack did, you know comes
in meaningful minutes.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
And just I was really impressed.

Speaker 7 (38:15):
Yeah, it hasn't got a lot of real actual game
game reps minutes, meaningful minutes. He came in not only offensively,
cut right to the basket, they came in, was in
the right defensive spots. And I think that's kind of
what you were talking a little bit, but just your
impression of what he brought to.

Speaker 3 (38:33):
A lot of probably because of foul trouble, but yeah,
it was trouble.

Speaker 8 (38:36):
He's even when he's had those you know, two three minutes,
minute and a half at the end of other games,
he's done some really good things. And not just because
he's been knocking threes down, but you know, he's a
smart player. He understands his role. He's going to go
in and just do what he should be doing and
not trying to you know, color outside the line.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
So to speak.

Speaker 8 (38:54):
And just we needed to solidify there and needed to
know on a little rest and and obviously blows guts
and rap where you know, had a lot of case
of the fouls tonight, so we had to find other ways.
And you know, Jack is somebody I have confidence in
there we get to that point, he can get in
there and help us.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
Go back to Nolan, Winter for a second because he
was was questionable. We know he had the injury late
in the Central Michigan game. What but you mentioned this
what he was doing early, I mean run into the rim,
busted up and down the floor.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
Yeah, set the tone.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
Yeah for everybody, Yeah, for everybody. His teammates really they can't.

Speaker 8 (39:31):
You know, absolutely, because he never he never complained about it.
You know, he tested it multiple times today. He minimized
some practice yesterday. But you know, for him to cut
through that when I know it doesn't feel the best
probably and to still be you know, fourteen and seven
and in twenty one.

Speaker 3 (39:47):
Minutes, and it's a credit to him.

Speaker 8 (39:50):
He toughed it out and and it's a good example
for the younger guys that, yeah, you can play when
something hurts. It's okay. You can play when something hurts you.
Most people do. So that was good for from just
a leadership standpoint, for Nolan to fight through that and
uh and and play pretty well.

Speaker 4 (40:07):
Well, you got big ten play coming up now. Obvious
get deeper.

Speaker 7 (40:11):
Hunter's going to get deep now when you look at
this in your group and obviously what's ahead of you.
We've had the immedia talking about the three game stretch,
but it's a it's an eighteen game stretch that you
look at it as what what needs to be, you know,
improvement wise, and what really excites you about what's ahead
because it's as players, this is what you want, right
what is ahead of these guys these next three games,
they're opportunities, opportunities to stamp their season and say, hey,

(40:33):
we are a good basketball team. Look at what we've done,
and look at you know, teams that are ahead of
us that.

Speaker 3 (40:38):
We can be.

Speaker 8 (40:39):
Yeah, I think you just start with, you know, the
one Saturday night and and we've done good things in
this thirteen game you know stretch of non conference and
obviously a couple of conference games, and we've done things
that you know, we have to be better at. I
think we're better defensively where we were sixty days ago.
But obviously we know the water is going to get
deeper and we're going to be challenging more ways and

(41:00):
in different ways which each team you play, but I
think we're also going to present some problems for others too.
So you just you'll learn from the non conference and
what you've gone through and and then as you walk
into the next phase, of it. You know, we got
to take that experience and and uh build upon it
and and compete. And I think we've gotten better at competing.

(41:22):
We've gotten better at playing harder. We've gotten better at
understanding the concepts defensively, collectively, unit together, how we have
to work in unison on the floor and uh, and
now we were going to get, you know.

Speaker 3 (41:37):
Be able to put it to test.

Speaker 2 (41:39):
I'll let you enjoy that. Lets you enjoy your pretzel,
all right, Ben s pretzel. Ben's pretzels pretty good.

Speaker 4 (41:45):
Yeah, more than pretty good.

Speaker 3 (41:47):
Two of them already, they're really good.

Speaker 8 (41:48):
You got a few of them left to go here.

Speaker 2 (41:50):
But he's he'll, he'll find a way try.

Speaker 4 (41:53):
We'll see you guys.

Speaker 3 (41:54):
We'll see you guys next year.

Speaker 2 (41:56):
Happy head coach, great guard. The Badger's defeat Milwaukee here
eighty to sixty.

Speaker 4 (42:04):
Greg Guard cannot resist the see you next year kind
of dad joke.

Speaker 3 (42:08):
You know, absolutely good. He has to do it.

Speaker 4 (42:11):
Gotta do it. You gotta do it when your dad
you got to make that kind of a joke. But yeah,
that'll that'll do it for a twenty twenty five for
that portion of the season for Wisconsin. Next up, twenty
twenty six and a big ten conference play before we
fully turn the page to that, though, Nick, any final
thoughts on this game here tonight.

Speaker 5 (42:31):
No, I mean, I wish this game would have happened
weeks ago.

Speaker 3 (42:36):
It's just such a weird.

Speaker 5 (42:38):
Placement for us to come into a game this far
in the year, almost in twenty twenty six, and be like, yeah,
it's an absolute win.

Speaker 3 (42:45):
If they don't win, it's a terrible shame.

Speaker 5 (42:47):
If they do win, they better win impressively and honest
to god, yesterday today, excuse me, feels like yesterday already.

Speaker 3 (42:55):
It was not that impressive.

Speaker 5 (42:56):
But they did what they need to do. They got
to win. Let's get a win agains Purdue on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (43:00):
Yeah, that's what is going to be in front of them. Here.
You're done with non conference play, You flush it, you
move on, and you get ready for Purdue. That game
is going to be coming up on January third, twenty
twenty six. Heres, that's Saturday, Saturday night, seven pm tip off.
So it's gonna be a late night at the Cole Center,
but it's gonna be a lot of fun. And afterwards,

(43:22):
we're gonna be here with you on the Jane Ksecurtedy
Solutions Basketball postgame Show, so very excited for that. Hopefully
we're talking about a win as Wisconsin kicks off the
rest of Big Ten conference play. That'll do it for
us here tonight. Thank you to Nick Osen for joining
us once again. Our producer Casey James back at the
Madison studios for Nick Bruswitz. I'm Dave Gasper once again.

(43:44):
The final score Wisconsin eighty, UWM sixty. Thank you for listening.
This has been the Jane case Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
And Bradon Carrington, we'll hold its head coach and the
catcher's crouch about four feet away. Carrington now will walk
it to the center circle. As time winding down here
in Madison, five seconds to play. Carrington will hold it.
Time will expire, and the Big Ten games will again
