Speaker 1 (00:00):
Bug Russell in for Dave Gasper once again. Dave is
(00:02):
in Arizona on assignments, and we've got a whale of
a ball game to talk about. Seventy seven to seventy
four Wisconsin. They eliminate Michigan State from the Big Ten Tournament,
and the Badgers will take on either Maryland or Michigan tomorrow.
That game is getting underway in just a couple of
minutes from game Bridgefield House in Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
We'll keep our eye on that.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
One other game that will keep our eye on as well,
uh the Wisconsin women's hockey team. They're trying to punch
their ticket to the Frozen four right now. At the
end of the first period, they trail Clarkson one to nothing.
So we'll keep our eye on that game, which is
going on at Lebon Arena. With that, there's a ton
to talk about. Our phone lines are open for you.
Six eight three two one thirteen ten against six eight
(00:44):
three two one thirteen ten.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
It was the John Tanji Show. And boy, I.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Tell you what, Nick Brussowitz, this was just one heavyweight
punch after another after another. This was a fun ballgame
to watch, absolutely, Doug.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
It was an awesome, awesome game in tanjay performance is
now officially the best scoring output for a Badger in
a Big Ten tournament game with his thirty two points today,
and it felt like even when he hadn't found his
touch in the biggest moments, he was able to then
kick it back into gear. He was making high difficulty threes,
(01:18):
he was finding a way to the hole, and whether
he was getting in and finishing or getting fouled, he
was stepping up to the free throw line, and until
those final moments he was a perfect twelve of twelve
from the charity stripe. He had done everything he needed
to kind of put the Badgers on his back in
this one, and the surrounding cast did their jobs as well.
But Tanjay, now we're talking about potentially an all time
(01:40):
Badger season, not just one of the top seasons ever.
Now we're gonna start nitpicking and saying, is it as
close as it can get to what Frank did in
twenty fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Well, Frank was the National Player of the Year in
twenty fifteen. That's a high bar to cross. But John
Tanjay has done everything and more that the Badgers have
asked of him, coming in after an injured season last
year and then coming over through the transfer portal from Missouri,
and you know, we look at Tanjay and you know
(02:10):
his incredible performance today thirty two points four of ten
from beyond the arc, which wasn't the same output that
he had obviously in yesterday's game where he went six
and six from beyond the arc eight to fifteen. Overall,
Tanji's first three ball, unlike yesterday, that was an airball.
Michigan State got up thirteen to four four minutes into
the game. At the first media timeout, they were up
(02:31):
thirteen to seven, and then Wisconsin started to ship away
at it. Jake Janicki with that driving layup with about
fourteen twenty left to play in the first half that
cut it to fifteen to nine. Carter Gilmour with a
deep three that made it fifteen to twelve Michigan State,
and then you started to see, after a sluggish start,
momentum start to shift. Michigan State went cold from the field.
(02:51):
Holloman had a three to stem the tide a little bit,
and in the second media timeout the Spartan still led
twenty to twelve, but after that, Javier Amos with a
hoop harm he missed the free throw, but still you
started to see that momentum change. Twenty two to sixteen
was the score at that point of the game. Blackwell
going hard to the whole. Michigan State, I thought, guarded
(03:12):
the three really really well in the early going as well.
But then Wisconsin just again they started slow, started shipping
away at it. And I think this is one of
the better performances that I've seen from both basketball teams
in a long time, just based on the fact that,
you know, I thought Michigan State they didn't give this
(03:33):
game up, and it reminded me a little bit of
the last time these two teams met, because it was
close the whole way. The outcome obviously was different this
time around, but it was.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
The fact that Wisconsin.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Played Michigan State so tough in both of those ballgames,
I thought voted really really well for how well Wisconsin
can play in the month of March.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
Absolutely, Doug.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
And when you consider what Wisconsin was just about two
weeks ago when they played I think it might have
been two weeks to the day they last played Michigan State.
They were absent one of their best players and certainly
one of the most significant players, which is Max Klesmant
And today, although Klesman doesn't chip in a great amount
in the scoring column, you can tell that their rotations,
(04:17):
their substitutions, the flow of the offense is where it
needs to be because they have their veteran leader out there.
Klesmant is arguably their most significant in terms of being
their vocal leader. Him and Kamari McGee have taken that role.
We've had conversations with Associate Athletic Director of Strategic Communications
(04:37):
Patrick Herb multiple times this year where he's been like, well,
if there's a guy that's going to fire them up
in the huddle, if there's a guy that's going to
get them together in the locker room, it's Max Klesmant
or it's Kamari McGee. And the two of them are
now back in their comfort zone, playing their particular roles.
And today was approve it Day for the Badgers. Can
they beat one of these teams? They had already kind
(04:58):
of defeated one demon yesterday knocking off UCLA, a.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
Team they had lost to earlier this season.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Now they beat Michigan State, a team they lost to
earlier this month, and now they'll have an opportunity to
beat either Michigan or Maryland tomorrow in the Big Ten
Tournament championship game. Both teams the Badgers have lost to
so far this season, so you're kind of defeating your
demons on your way to the national tournament. The Badgers
just need to get over the hump they didn't last year.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
They got a similar win.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
They beat Perdue in a exceptional finish, a game winning
shot by Max Klesman last year in the semi finals,
but they lost to Illinois the championship game. Let's see
if they can get over the hump tomorrow whoever they
end up facing.
Speaker 1 (05:37):

Speaker 6 (05:57):
You know what, guys, this was a great game for
the State of Wisconsin to get the revenge Michigan State.
You know, Mission Say is a very good team. This
was a tough, tough win, but I'm so darned proud
of Wisconsin, and please stay hi to Matt Lapey for
(06:19):
me and for day mccainnon. Thank you guys.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Definitely we'll do the Hall of that is the Hall
of Famer. Matt Leapey, Yes, multis right.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
I WBA was last year and now you'll be in
the UW Athletics Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
And how about Paul Brown.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
By the way, as long as we were talking about
women's hockey a second ago, Paul Brown named this week
to the class of twenty twenty five Wisconsin Broadcasters Association
Hall of Fame, so he's one of ours as well.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
So congratulations to Paul.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
And we'll keep you posted on that Wisconsin women's hockey
game that's going on at Labron against Clarkson as we speak.
All right, seventy seven to seventy four Wisconsin with the
win over Michigan State. Again, our phone lines are open

I'm Doug Russell in for Dave Gasper who is on assignment.
Nick Brucewitz is alongside as always, stay with us on
(07:08):
thirteen ten WIBA.
Speaker 7 (07:14):
John Tanjay and ninety one percent free throws Shooter. He's
on the brink of the school record in free throws made.
He has the first. He has just matched Nigel Hayes
with one hundred ninety made free throws. Hays set that
market Wisconsin for the twenty fifteen sixteen season. As Carter
Gilmour will check in for Nolan Winzer. Second free throw
(07:37):
for Tanjay. It's good and he has the single season
school record now with one hundred ninety one free throws.
Three two Michigan State.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
We're two minutes in two.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Of the thirty two points that John Tanjay made for
the Wisconsin Badgers today in their seventy seven to seventy
four win in the Big Ten Tournament semi finals over
Michigan State in Indianapolis. Welcome back in It is the
J and K Security Solutions Basketball post game show. Doug
Russell in for Dave Gasper who's on assignment. Nick Brucewitz
alongside as well. Six eight three, two one thirteen ten
(08:11):
is the phone number. And I didn't know that I
was going to get a Nigel Hayes reference today, Nick,
but that was nice.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Yeah, it's always great if you're talking about an all
time great and an all time great season. A couple
of years ago, which has now been a decade, and
now you can start comparing and talking about this year's team,
which has built a really special run here or starting
to feel like they're the team that we thought they
were in early February. And Jay Wright, long time, very
(08:37):
successful head coach at the collegiate level, he spoke today
on the television coverage on CBS saying after the game
that he thinks this is the most talented team, the
best team that Greg Gard has coached, right, and you
can get into the weeds talking about well, what do
you mean by coached. He's been around for a long time,
but officially as a head coach. I think that's the
point he's making. And he thinks they got a Final
Four ceiling, a very solid possibility to get there. So
(09:00):
high praise from a highly successful coach, just to add
more gravy to this day in terms of what the
Badgers can be moving forward.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Lots of basketball left in front of Wisconsin, including tomorrow's
game against either Michigan or Maryland. As I promised, we
are keeping an eye on that game. They're tied at ten,
about fifteen twelve left to play in the first half,
and we'll keep you posted throughout our hour here on
the J and K Security Solutions Basketball post game show.
Let's go to Ron in Madison. Ron, you're on with
(09:33):
Doug and Nick. That good huh.
Speaker 8 (09:38):
I just got over.
Speaker 9 (09:39):
I just got over my heart attack. What a great game.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Well uws some fantastic radical hospitals that block kind of
three by Carter.
Speaker 9 (09:53):
But the strip at the end, John and I have
to make a comment that he took guts by the
rep not to call a fall on John.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, I would agree.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
They let him play, and that's one of the things
that I appreciated about this entire game today. Thanks for
the call, uh Ron, and to that extent I mean
Nick the Badgers. I know that I kind of talked
about the first couple of minutes of the game, but
what a wild last couple of minutes of the game
as well. I figured we would start at the beginning
(10:26):
and then work our way through. But just a couple
of great defensive stops, a couple of great defensive plays,
nobody blinked. I guess the only one that blinked was
John Tonji missing a couple of free throws there at
the end. I suppose you can forgive that with the
thirty two points that he did score and the defense
that he displayed along with the rest of his team
in the last you know, thirty seconds of the ball game.
That's what you know helped win it for Wisconsin.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Yeah, no doubt was that a absolute adrenaline rush. Heart
still beating when I think about it. Finished to this
game because Gilmore comes up with a huge block, and
Gilly's kind of been that guy this year where I
think the fans have embraced him as maybe the fan favorite.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
Because of his story.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Here the ridicule the criticism he got early in his
career from many fans and other non fans. Right, it's
hard to quantify if you're a fan or not if
you're always dogging your players online. But he has grown
into being that guy for this team, the Gilly James nickname,
and that block was huge. Then the Batchers have the
opportunity to go to the free throw line with the
(11:30):
best free throw shooter on their team, and as we
heard leading into this segment, a guy who has the
program record now for single season free throws made john Tonjay.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
He had been twelve of twelve, So why wouldn't he
miss both? Right and so.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Michigan State's got a shot down three to go up
the court, and they were breaking it down in the
post game.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
I heard it from both on.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Television and radio, like trying to figure what was the
plan there for john Tonjay, and I think consensus was
he was trying to foul on the possession, not on
a shot attempt, and all of a sudden, Fears raises
up to take that shot and TOAJ just happens to
swipe perfectly on the ball. He'll tell you he did
(12:13):
it intentionally, but it felt to me like he was
looking to foul there up three, you foul and he
got the perfect strip. It's just the cherry on top
to what was a great performance for Tanja because that
one everything he had in his control, the thirty two points,
they were all under his terms.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
But that strip might have just been luck. And that's
who cares.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
This is March, this is the time of year that
you have to take the moment, and he happened to
get it.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
I'm not even gonna say that it was luck.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
I think that it was a well coached player doing
something in the moment that he had been coached to do.
And for Wisconsin to come up with such sound, fundamental
basketball when accounted, and you would expect the same thing
from Michigan State. And we saw that from Michigan State
because they've got a Hall of Fame coach in their
own right in the great Tom Izzo. But to kind
of illustrate exactly how Horton John Tanji was to this team,
(13:03):
let's talk about offensively through the first I guess three
quarters plus of the game. With six forty three left
to play in the game, during the media timeout, I
took a look at the box score. So at that
time Tonjay had twenty eight points. He was the only
player in double digits at that time. Carter Gilmour had seven,
(13:23):
John Blackwell had seven, Kamari McGee with two, Carter Gilmore,
as I mentioned, he had seven, Stephen Crowle only had three,
Klesmant with four, uh Nolan Winter only had five points.
I mean, he was almost half of Wisconsin's offensive.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Output, very very deep into this game. They would not
have won this game.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Without John Tonjay's offense through the first you know, in
a forty minute game, the first thirty four minutes of
this contest.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Yeah, you're right, Doug, and I think that you know,
I saw some messages online. Let's start with yesterday Mick
Cronin's comments in the post game when Badger's knocked off
UCLA rather handily. You know, Cronin goes to the podium
and he says, you know, I voted for that guy
as Big Ten Player of the Year. You know, that
was my number one. And some people here in Wisconsin
(14:14):
think that he should have won it. And I think
people across the board had some challenges picking who wanted
who they wanted to be the Big.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
Ten Player the Year.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Braden Smith wins it a great season for him, but
you know, Taja comes into today. He had scored forty
four points over the first two games, right, averaging twenty
two points in the Big Ten tournament. Adds another thirty
two today, so he's at fifty four excuse me, seventy
four through the two games or it's three games, so
that's a lot of points. This guy's clearly the Big
(14:43):
Ten Player of the tournament at this point. And he
shows up again today, And this is what happens this
time of year. I know, depth is huge, and that's
what we love to lean on. But when push comes
to shove and the lights of the brightest we remember
the stars, and John Toajay has stepped up to be
that star four was sconsin. That's not to say that
he can't have a bad game and the Badgers can
(15:04):
win without him being what he was today, but today
they needed him to be what he was, and.
Speaker 5 (15:08):
He stepped up to the plate. He has been.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
I mean, he has been as good as anyone in
this program's history in an individual season. You're going to
debate for hours in ages about who's had the best seasons,
but no doubt about it, he's in the quote unquote
Mount Rushmore of seasons at this point. So you got Kaminski,
got Johnny Davis, he got what Tadja's done. You've got
a ton of superstar incredible seasons in the past, but
this is the modern huge year. This might be the
(15:34):
Russell Wilson for the Badgers in terms of what one
year can look like in terms of developing a legacy.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
And they also needed as great as Tanji was, they
needed John Blackwell to get into this game in about
five point fifty five left with Tanji on the bench,
he was getting a breather, made a couple of free throws,
made it sixty three to sixty and that I think
got him going. He needed to get going in this ballgame.
And John blackwell, you know, in this one, finishes with
(16:04):
fourteen points and most of those were scored late. He
was relatively quiet in the early going. But they needed
contributions from everyone. Carter Gilmore was the only other player
that scored in double digits, but he came up with
two huge three pointers and four to seven from the
field overall. So as great as John Tonji was, and
I don't want to diminish anything that he did in
(16:25):
this game, they needed more than just John Tanjie to
beat a very good Michigan State team because I thought
that they defended.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Really, really well.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
Wisconsin defended the perimeter extraordinarily well, but I thought Michigan
State did too.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Yeah, I think the Badgers did a lot better job
in this one of limiting Jackson Kohler. Right, So he
was a guy that was their problem in the first
matchup with offensive rebounds, and today he had limited.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
Action because of fouled trouble.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Wisconsin did everything that they needed to do to maintain
the level of play that they wanted to play at today.
They wanted to play a specific form of basketball.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
They didn't. I have too many guys that got into
fouled trouble early.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
They had the ability to kind of rest John Tanjay
late in that game, right around the four minutes.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
Six to Boston.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
There was like six thirty to four minutes, right the
final media timeout, he was on the bench, He was
rested up, and he steps up in the final moments.
Wisconsin's got a hell of a team, and we've known
that this year, but we lost some mojo for a
few weeks there, especially at the end of the regular
season with a couple of losses at home.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Speaking of foul trouble, Fears and Akins both had four
fouls for Michigan State Wisconsin.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Nolan Winter and Max Pleasmant.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
Each had four fouls as well, and they were limited
down the stretch too. All right, Coming up next, we'll
check in with twenty four to seven's Nick Osin. Nick
Bruce Wiz is alongside I'm Doug russellnfradave Gasper who's on
assignment with the Brewers. Wisconsin defeats Michigan State by a
final score of seventy seven to seventy four. From Home
Security to Automation j and K Security Solutions. As you covered,
go to jksecurity dot com for more info. You're listening
(17:56):
to the J and K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.
On thirteen seven Wiva.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Ton Jay walks the dribble to the center circle of
the shot clock at thirteen Tonjay against Fears one twenty
to play shock Clockett ten. Here's Blackwell shot Clockett seven.
Blackwell inches five to shoot high screen crowd, Blackwell drive to.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
The whole play up good for Blackwell.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
Five point league Wisconsin one oh seven to play.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Huge basket for John Blackwell. Wisconsin with a seventy seven
to seventy four win in the Big Ten semi final
against Michigan State. They are headed to the championship, where
they will take on the winner of the Michigan Maryland game,
which is going on right now. The Terrapins are up
twenty three to sixteen, nine to forty left to play
in the first half of As of the other game
that we are keeping you abreast of, Ava Murphy with
(18:47):
the equalizer for Wisconsin in their women's hockey game at
Lebron against Clarkson. The winner of this game goes on
to the Frozen four. Wisconsin of course, looking for their
eighth national championship. So tied one point one, Wisconsin is
on the power play right now with just under four
minutes left to play in the second period. We'll keep
you posted throughout the rest of our show.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
On that one as well.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
But time now to turn in to our friend Nick
Osin from twenty four to seven Sports. He is in Indianapolis,
was at the game today and Nick, we've kind of
likened it. Nick and I have to just two kind
of heavyweights going at it. Michigan State's a fantastically coached team,
as we all know, with the Hall of Famer Tom
and so I thought they played well today, but Wisconsin
(19:33):
just kept punching.
Speaker 8 (19:36):
You know, guys, that's very ironic. That's almost the exact
thing that I wrote in my paragraph lead for this story.
I felt like it was one of the best, really
most well played, competitive kind of contests that I've seen
in any sport in the last few years. It just
felt like, obviously these teams are both going to go dancing,
of course, but it felt like this was going to
(19:58):
be the end of the season for one of these
So it was terrific. Doug and to me, something that
really stood out was the scounting. Didn't slinch and they
could have. I mean, nobody, especially these coaches, are going
to blame a win or a loss on refereeing or anything.
But I think both teams probably could have had legitimate
questions and gripes about some of these calls. And I
know the Badgers were down nine, they were struggling offensively early,
(20:21):
and they just didn't seem to flinch. And I think
that speaks to the talent, the depth, and really the
maturity that we've seen in this group.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Guys, Nick, the Badgers did not shoot as well from
deep to be expected about half in terms of percentage. Right,
Yesterday shot sixty percent from three, which is remarkable.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
Today thirty one percent from deep.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
So how did they reach nearly the same point total
just one day later, in your opinion, without scoring ten threes?
Speaker 5 (20:49):
And that's the difference nineteen yesterday nine today?
Speaker 8 (20:53):
Yeah, Nick, And it's funny, that's about the percentage that
we talked about that I felt like they needed to
get even just ave thirty because I just like how
really the rest of the offense can flow, and today
it was getting to the free throw line getting there
twenty eight times, making twenty two, which is obviously a
little bit less than this team usually shoots in terms
of a percentage. Tanjay ironically missing the last two, but
(21:16):
was perfect throughout most of it. Blackwell was very timely
with his I thought the Winter did well, and just overall,
it felt like there was a shift after maybe those
first I think nine or ten minutes a gameplay. They
were going to attack the paint, attack the cup draw
bowels really make things difficult for that Spartans defense, and
I think the Badgers did just that.
Speaker 6 (21:36):
Next.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
I mentioned this in our last segment, Nick, and where
I'm going with this is okay. So John Tanja, with
about six and a half minutes left to play, had
twenty eight of Wisconsin's sixty points. No other score at
that point of the game had double digits. Blackwell finished
with fourteen, and only three players overall had double digits.
Is there, in your opinion, perhaps a danger in relying
(22:00):
too much on one player in this case John Tanji.
Speaker 8 (22:05):
You know, I don't believe so. I think if it
was a lot of other players, maybe, but this guy
in John Tanjay, has really just kind of wiped away
any doubts possible that I have had watching him in
this team because he's done it multiple times now against Arizona,
have Purdue against Illinois. So do you want that to
necessarily be the recipe? No, and I don't think it is.
(22:28):
I think we've seen really good games from a Blackwell,
from a Winter and other guys that really make up
kind of the top rotation. But just in terms of
where he's at, I mean, we know guys, all of
us have watched a lot of March Madness throughout the years.
Generally stars, older players and guards win in March. You
have all of that in one in John Tanje. So
I think as long as he can put in those
(22:50):
minutes and still stay relatively efficient, which he certainly is,
I don't really see any worries there, Doug. I really don't.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
Nick they're going to get another shot here. It's kind
of like that Grim Reaper meme online where he opens
a door and he defeats an opponent. Right, So, he
knocked off UCLA, the Badgers did after losing to them
earlier this season. Now they beat Michigan State after losing
to them earlier this season, and no matter what, they'll
play someone that they lost to earlier this season.
Speaker 5 (23:18):
If you had to look at it.
Speaker 3 (23:20):
From a matchup's perspective, which team do you think could
caused the Badgers more trouble tomorrow?
Speaker 5 (23:25):
Between Maryland and Michigan.
Speaker 8 (23:28):
Yeah, that's really well said, Nick, And honestly, I love
the reference. I've seen similar out there. You know, I
think both of these teams I like Wisconsin steeling over
either of them. However, they both kind of provide different things,
and I feel like if you're looking at who could
be the most dangerous, I would lean toward Maryland. I
think you could argue that they have the best starting
five potentially in the country, certainly a top five or
(23:52):
six starting lineup, just because there's no real weakness there.
I think Michigan probably provides more depth. The Badgers would
have more depth than either of these teams. But I
think just because of that star power in the starting
five and the way that the Turfs have been playing
as of late, I would say they're probably a little
bit more difficult. Michigan obviously looked great last night, but
have not been playing great basketball. I think if you
(24:13):
got to choose, you'd probably rather play the Wolverines. But
know in this group and like we said with Doug
as well, how they don't flinch. I think the badness
will be motivated and playing some good basketball against either
of these two teams. But I think most importantly, Nick,
if I can just add before we keep going, I
think that today solidified something that I've really been looking for.
(24:35):
I know, we spoke and I thought, Okay, they might
have blown their shot at Milwaukee against Penn State. From
what I'm hearing and reading, they've got a great shot
to be the Hawk and the House. So tomorrow would
just kind of be a cherry on top and something
nice for garding companable.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
So final question for you, as we're joined by twenty
four seven's Nick Osin, We've got great guard coming up
in just a couple of minutes. He joined Butchy and
Matt at the table after the ball game was over.
How do you take the success that Wisconsin has in
this tournament and if you want to rewind the clock
exactly one year ago, That's kind of where I'm going
with this, because you're not necessarily judged by what you
(25:11):
do in the conference tournament. You're judged by what you
do in the NCAA's They got this far a year
ago and then bounced in the round of sixty four.
How do you avoid that this year because we saw
it a year ago.
Speaker 8 (25:25):
Yeah, I think a lot of people have maybe kind
of thought about or asked that question, Doug. I think
it's fair. I think they're just two completely different teams,
I would say, in terms of overall makeup and just
what is kind of possible with them. So I'll say
that first and foremost. And this group just seems a
little bit more cohesive. I think obviously they've got more
star power, which I think can be relied upon and
(25:48):
frankly dug their deeper. So I feel like, unless you
get this nightmare matchup, which we've seen it happen. We've
seen one seeds and lose the sixteens and so on.
I love the way Wisconsin's playing right now now. I like,
what is possible. You get into the opponent a little bit,
but really you rest up, you stay loose this week,
stay fresh, and then you see what happens. You see
(26:08):
how the ball balances. But right now, I love the
way it's bouncing for these bats.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Nick. We appreciate the time so much.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
Enjoy your stay in Indianapolis, which gets extended one more day,
and we'll talk to you tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (26:19):
You bet, guys, thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
All right?
Speaker 1 (26:21):
There he goes Nick Osen from twenty four to seven
Sports joining us here live from Indianapolis. We'll hear from
the head coach, Greg Guard coming up next on. Doug
Russell in for Dave Gasper who's on assignment. Nick Bruswiz
is alongside as well. Wisconsin defeats Michigan State. They advanced
to the Big Ten championship game tomorrow against the winner
of today's Michigan versus Maryland game. They're tied at twenty
(26:43):
five with about six minutes left to play in the
first half. We'll keep you posted on that game when
we come back. Also, Greg Guard, Batcher's head coach, coming
up straight ahead as well. Doug and Nick right here
on the Jank Security Solutions basketball postgame show on thirteen
ten WIBA.
Speaker 7 (27:04):
Here's why in the lane stopped the Holloman for three
blocks by Gilmore Hicks loose Todd Jays there he's found
for six seconds left another moment for Gilly James. What
timing on the block Forvcarter Gilmore.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Wisconsin defeats Michigan State seventy seven to seventy four in
the Big Ten tournament's semi finals. They will move on
to play the winner of today's Michigan versus Maryland game,
which is going on right now twenty nine to twenty seven.
The Wolverines on top of the Terrapins. Doug Russell, Nick
Brucewitz here at the J and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame show desk on thirteen to ten WIBA. We've got
(27:45):
Greg Guard standing by with Matt Lepe and Brian Butch.
We'll get to that in just a second. Quick update
from the Badgers women's hockey game. Kelly Gorbtenko. She lights
the lamp with two twenty three left to play in
the second at the end of two, Wisconsin up on
Clarkson two to one. The winner goes on to the
Frozen four Wisconsin, of course, looking for their eighth national championship.
The Badger's out shooting the Golden Knights twenty nine to
(28:08):
eight through two periods as well. All right, let's get
back to basketball. As I mentioned, head coach Greg Guard
after today's three point victory of the Spartans joined the
voices of Badgers Basketball Matt Leape and Brian Butch.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
Badger's head coach Greg Gard Is they getting hooked up
as coach? Just another date, just another boring day at
the office here. Huh wow? Is that the heck of Patrick?
I'm good man, I can hear.
Speaker 9 (28:35):
Yeah. I mean, you'd like to make a couple of
free throws there at the end to really take all
the drama out of it. But well, we've we found
a way. We found a way, and obviously we had
big guys step up, small ball lineups. Got it's going
a little bit in the second half. You know, we
got a little too much foul trouble. But heck of
a college basketball game. Man, two heavyweights going at it.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
We've talked a lot about it, different guys stepping up
cold Gilmore yet, I mean, how fantastic obviously the defensive play,
but the energy offensive leave.
Speaker 9 (29:07):
Yeah, I mean, he's just a senior that loves Wisconsin
and he plays his heart out, and uh couldn't be
happier for him.
Speaker 7 (29:16):
There was a perfect time where were Tanjay to wana
foul but not he gets the ball there in the end.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Yes, I know, I know.
Speaker 9 (29:22):
How about how about just have the ninety percent free
throw shooter makeup make one of the free throws.
Speaker 7 (29:28):
What is it about the Big Ten Tournament? Greg? Some
of the best games we have seen Wisconsin basketball play
have been into this event.
Speaker 5 (29:35):
It just seems like, Yeah, I.
Speaker 9 (29:36):
Mean, it's just uh, you know, it's it's uh, it's March.
You know, it's March. And I was talking to coach
Iso before the game and he goes, can you believe
that we've met twelve times? We have the most ever
of us in Michigan State. I said times because we're
both really good. That's why we meet in this tournament,
because we're usually advancing.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
John Tanjay has been extremely special and it just looked
like he had times just decided he was going to
take old and understanding to read the defense Michigan State
going under those ball screens.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
He took a couple of threes.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
They didn't go down. And I loved how aggressive he
was and I'm not just gonna settle. I'm gonna turn
that corner, just based on the way Michigan's Day was
guarding too. They were hugging those three point shooers. The
driving lanes were gonna be there, right, And he did
a great job of attacking at being aggressive.
Speaker 9 (30:19):
He did, you know, I think we learned from where
we were, you know, two weeks ago. We learned and
we got better at unloading the nail. We got better
at getting deeper with some of the dribble handoffs and
the ball screens, and it allowed us to get a
better angle to turn down hill.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Go enjoy this for a while. We'll talk about tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (30:36):
Tomorrow sounds good, coach, all right, Badger's head coach, great
guard joining us as Wisconsin defeats Michigan State on a
wild ending seventy seven to seventy four.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
And it was a wild ending, and we'll look forward
to tomorrow's game between either Michigan or Maryland.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Nick griswo'z any final thoughts.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
Yeah, let's just get her done.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
Last year, we got to this point and it felt
like Wisconsin was gonna win the.
Speaker 5 (31:03):
Big Ten Tournament.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
They had a lot of momentum and they were gonna
carry it into the national tournament, and none of that happened.
So let's get tomorrow's win. Let's carry that into the
national Tournament, which will be hopefully in Milwaukee for the
Badgers starting on Friday. But one day at a time,
Michigan or Maryland looking forward to it tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
All right, We'll see you tomorrow. How about that, We'll
do this again one more time.
Speaker 5 (31:23):
I'm down man, I'm looking forward to it. Gonna be
a blast.
