After being tested in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Wednesday night, the Wisconsin Badgers
adjusted and came back with the convincingthree match sweep on Thursday evening. Now,
today, the top ranked team inthe country has another top twenty five
team on the slate as Wisconsin takeson twenty fourth ranked Tennessee in the Batcher's
home opener from the historic UW Fieldhouse. John Oudias and Pete wait with you.

It's number one Wisconsin versus number twentyfour Tennessee. And before today's match,
I asked head coach Kelly Sheffield whatsort of adjustments helped the most on
Thursday in that three set sweep ofthe Razorbacks. You know, I think
we had a better understanding, awardto serve how they were trying to attack
areas that we could attack it.You had more information that you have on

a team. Certainly the better.But yeah, I thought we'd played a
lot better in Night two. Buthey, Night one, I loved our
fight. I mean we were justin a battle boat teams playing really,
really hard, a lot of greatplays, and we hung in there.
Yeah. Two ninety five I thinkwas the hitting percentage in the five sets.
I think it's the third most everfor a five set match in rally
scoring history. But is that whatallowed you to hit about fifty points higher

the next night? It was justthat better understanding, like you were just
talking about. Yeah, yeah,I mean it's a you know, some
of the craziness that you can seeout of week one is teams just not
knowing each other. And I thinkyou know they were running. They came
out running the slide of the rightside quite a bit against us earlier.

Well they didn't said that one timein opening weekends, so you know,
we knew somebody was running back here, but we were just ignoring them because
they were choosing somewhere else. Theyget three kills out of the gate with
basically no block over there, andyou sit there and think, Mandaes Wisconsin
know how to how to defend theright side. Well, we chose to
ignore that until they got it afew times and then kind of got our

attention. With head coach Kelly Sheffieldthe Badgers and their home opener today against
Tennessee, I want to ask youabout Julia Orgo. She had six straight
matches of double figures. Now thatdates back to last year, so fourth
straight this year. What differences doyou see in her defense early to start
the season now and maybe you know, late this season to be able to
go on this type of stretch.Yeah, it's she's worked really hard at

it to to you know, beingin the right spot and being calm and
reading and it's certainly paying off.But it's it's it's she works really hard
at it. Finally, the championshipbanner gets dropped today from last season,

we're on in both of our matches. I think that's a big thing with

any team that's trying to improve overthe course of the season is can you
learn about your opponent as you gothrough each set? Can you learn about
opponents you got to reach match andcan you fine tune those things that?
All? Right? I now identifiedwhere we need to go attack, where
we need to change our defense,and I thought our players over the course
of both matches did a good jobof adjusting to that. We got to
do better so we don't have toget stuck in some of the holes that
we got to early in the firstset of the second match or early in

some of those sets. But allright, we know we can we can
come back, we can ship away. We've got the mentality that we can
be strong in big moments, comingback from a couple of set points and
working through that. But I thinkthat's one of the things as we go
through the season we gotta keep workingon. And the opponents continue to be
very high caliber here in the nonconference, including today's team. Tennessee a
top twenty five teams so far.Why is Tennessee five and oh so far

this year? I mean, youlook at their their st ranks, and
their physicality is part of it.They're a little bit different than the Arkansas
team who beat you on speed andtenacity and the different grits parts that they
had. Tennessee's a little bit moreof a bigger, physical team. They've
got a lefty on the right sidewho can manipulate the ball really well.
In the front row and the backrow. They've got Janasa Moore who played
Ohio State for a couple of yearsand is now transferred over to the Tennessee.

So that really helps. Having someexperience at the left antenna when you
when you've got to take out whatwe would say times take out the trash
of an auto system play can youtake big swings? And she's used to
being in that role. It's anew center this year for them in Curb
but she's a local kid from fromIllinois, so I think she's excited.

week. It's an exciting afternoon andthe game hasn't even started yet. We

the Badgers nine overall Big Ten Championships. It's just been a great program for
decades and decades, thirty or fortyyears with great fans the whole time.
And there we have another great afternoonand volleyball against Tennessee, which is a
strong team with five different tram comingin. You mentioned thirty or forty years
of strong volleyball, and it's beenabout that time frame that the Badgers had
faced Tennessee. The last time theyfaced over forty years ago. Last time,

nineteen eighty one was the last timeWisconsin played Tennessee. It was at
a neutral side. It was aBadger's loss in three sets. Yeah,
we had to look that up becauseI said I in my ten year.
I didn't ever remember playing against him. Some teams you play a lot,
even if they're not in your conference. You run across them a lot of
Tennessee was not one of those.But they are a good athletic team.
They're picked as we finished third inthe conference. This here, yeah,

like I mentioned, five and oh, Start beats San Diego recently, the
big win for San Diego. Teamthat looks a lot different than last year,
but a team that made it tothe final four. Ask Burns sends

unstoppable and the two matches against Arkansas, Booth had just one hitting error in

the two matches combined. It's easyto understand that when you've got somebody who's
six seven, then they're moving alongthe net. You don't really know how
why that thirty one is going tobe. Generally thirty one means three feet
forward a foot above the net,but it could be four feet five foot.
You never know. Timmy Thomas withthat jump top spin pin ball around
is gonna fall. It's gonna bea kill four Tennessee. They may get

two one lady balls on top ofthe badgers back to that booth and how
you know it's hard to stop herright there in the middle. Just to
provide some more context of those numbers, twelve kills, no errors off,
nineteen swings on Wednesday, eight kills, one error off, eleven attempts,
and the majority of them were rightthere in the middle of the net.
And that shoots out another great additionto the program of transfer coming in.

But somebody who they're getting more andmore used to and comfortable with serve goes
and handled by booth, chased downby Aspurn on the left sideline. Then
Franklin takes a hack at it andrips it cross court for the kill.
Out of system. There is SarahFranklin making it two each. Yeah,
that's set dropped in just a littlebit, which gave her a chance to
go more hard cross court. Theblock kind of passed her up a little
bit. She went crosscourt fourteen footline, about five feet in from the

kids playing ball in high school orclub ball understands it's not always your fault,
but sometimes the coach needs to tryto change the momentum. Just slow
it down a little bit, andnow they dig get a side up.
But it took him a couple oftries. Fingle serving at gus Techen,

who got ace. The pass byGig goes over the net and out of
balance toward the Tennessee bench. It'san ace for Fingle, her fourth of
the season. Another new role forguz Techen two. Because as a libarrow,
you're out there all the time playingdefense a lot of rotations. As

different. It's harder to stay ina rhythm that time. She spins the

Sometimes setters get accused of not playinggood defense, but the Badger setters
have always been good at it.She's made a couple of nice ones already,
and that was a one handed divingplay off the setter dump from Tennessee.
It's a seven point lead for Wisconsin. The Badgers have led by as
many as nine in the first set. Tennessee right to left serve at Franklin

did she get the hands because theywent well past the headline. Now punched
way deep. Yeah, that onesailed on her. She just mistimed a

room to swing, or maybe shesaid run the middle a little bit more

and get some gaps for the outsideafter that. So we'll see if they
change up their strategy a little bit. Last couple of points for the Badgers

then a shot by Granberry gets rejectedand another Bucky block number six of the
day four Wisconsin and the Badgers arescrambling just to get back to the net,

and I think the Tennessee center Kerrmade a mistake by just going to
her middle blocker on the far rightside of the court, so the Badgers
didn't not to move at all,right, Robinson just stuck her hands up
there. If she had shoved,you know, thrown them to the far

You know, I think the depththat they have on this team and any

DS that would come in and fillin that role. Everybody is super steady
and mentally strong, so I thinkthat Kelly does a great job in stilling
confidence and everybody and playing whatever rolethat is. And I trust both of
them to get it done. Andwhether they're left back, middle back in
the red or white, so Ithink that they're they're handling it well and
then getting along great Grandberry gets amiddle attack for Tennessee. It's a three

sweep. But so we talk aboutall this talent. We talk about how
they, you know, keep bringingin talent to this program. There's got
to be a certain luxury for thisteam to be able to change the lineup

and what you're able to consistently trainwith. It really does take everybody giving

full effort all the time. Andthe more talent you have on a team,

European that third set, Yeah,I know you mentioned the passing before.
Was that maybe the bigger, biggestdifference in that set as to why Tennessee

was able to win? Or whatelse? Did you? They're all they're
all connected. The Tennessee serves tougher, Wisconsin is not as good passing,
Wisconsin's offense isn't as good. Tennesseeis able to run their offense back at
them in Tennessee's offense is stronger.So it's all connected to that tougher serving
and poor passing than by the Badgersand Tennessee in that set twelve kills three

years for three sixty hitting percentage thebest they've done, oh by far better
than they've done all day. Andit's amazing how it can be. Connect
it to your serving. When youtake the other team out of their offense,
you get easier balls coming back atyou, or you're just collad out

Many fans here, including myself hereputting the broadcast booth, weren't expecting that.
But give credit to Tennessee for battling. So let's take a look at
the game recap as Wisconsin was ableto go on a seven run to end
that first set. You know,like I said at the time, like
you look back at that first set, twenty five sixteen oh, Wisconsin one

pretty handedly by nine. Well,they actually were in a battle with Tennessee
and had a two point lead ateighteen to sixteen before they go on that
seven oh run to end it.Nine kills from Sarah Franklin the Badgers at
five eighty six to one sixty seven. They did look pretty good though.
Twenty five to sixteen second set onceagain a battle. Now the Badger's defense
stepped it up seven blocks in thatset and they were very, very crucial

you know, one of our favoritematches, not the ones that comes to
breasy, but the ones that wehave to really grind through. It feels

good, you know, to win, but I also know that we have
a lot of work to do,and so I'm excited to get back in
the gym this week and to cleanup some of the things that we may
be missed during that match. Yeah, you said you learned a lot,
but what we're maybe one or twoof the things you learned the most throughout
the course of this match, Andwhat do you see as kind of some
of those things you want to getback into the gym and try to work
out. I think most of all, it's I learned that it's mental.

You know, we have the toolsthere, the tools for success the whole
time. We have those tools,and we just need to learn how to
tap into those and not get socaught up on certain things, you know.
So I think that just having thatnext bomb mentality is something that we
can all work on going forward.But I feel like we did a really
good job of fighting when it camedown to it. That's one thing.

This team has a whole lot offight, no matter where we're at,
no matter how far we're down.We like to call ourselves heartbreakers, so
you know, and basically that justmeans no matter how down we are,
we're gonna come back. We're gonnawin that set, We're gonna break your
hearts. Like, that's the mindsetthat we have. And I think that
that tough mindset of just going backand bad d every single time is something
that we did a really good jobat and that I want to keep going

forward. It seemed like they keptsetting you more and more as a match
went on, which I'm sure youloved and you did well. But what
what was your challenge against this teamas a middle blocker because they ran a
pretty fast offense going side to side. Yeah, so what was your mindset
as you were learning them as anopponent as the match went on? You
know? My mindset, which issomething that I'm still working on, is
delegation. You know, when anoffense is that fast, you you can't

get to everything, or else you'regonna miss everything. Right, So for
me, it's making sure that Iam commanding the front row and delegating to
my pins like hey, you gotme in the seam, or I need
your help on this ball. Thisball is fast, I need you,
And so just having that communication andrealizing that I don't have to do it
all myself. I have people aroundme who are great blockers as well,

and who can help me with thesefaster offenses. And you know, we'll
get adjusted to them as we go, as we continue to work as a
team and as a system. Butyeah, for right now, it's it's
about realizing that you have help andyou can use it. And that block,
I think really obviously help propel yourteam, especially in that fifth set.
Five of the team's sixteen blocks comein that fifth set. In your

opinion, just how vital were thosedefensive plays? I think that it was
incredibly vital, not only like pointwise, but for momentum just getting a
stuff that's like our team's favorite thingin the world. So getting those just
really was a huge energy booster forus, and it helped us to propel
us through the rest of that fifthset. And I love the energy you

bring, especially when you make adefensive play. Yeah, tell me what's
going through your mind when you domake a play and you kind of you
don't let the other side, No, I just got you a little bit.
I mean, it's not like it'snot malicious, right, I'm I'm
just fired up that you know,I got that play. So it's just
sort of like, yeah, that'sright, Like I'm here like, don't

forget about me, because I feellike middles get forgotten about sometimes just because
we're not super involved in the offense. So you know, when I get
those defensive plays, I'm like,yeah, I'm here. Hello. Basically

the victory in your opinion, fifthset? Are we just talking to Carter
about the blocks and kind of howthat helps the momentum kind of get going
for your team. How'd you seethe fifth man? It was a tail
of two cities on that type ofmatch. It started out, well,
we're doing a really well, reallygood job offensively. Defensively, we had

some queues that we thought we couldhave been a little cleaner at in the
first and a second, and thenthe third and the fourth. We kind
of let off the gas a littlebit and and you saw it. You
saw it with our attack numbers wentdown, our defensive numbers went down,
and we weren't kind of in thataggressive mindset of trying to find and are
where they going? What are theytrying to do. We're a little hesitant
on some of their quick attackers,and so well I was excited for is
in the fifth is that our eyeswere in the right place, where mindset

was in the right place. Ourservers were attacking space, creating opportunities,
and we gave it. We didn'tgive up the little stuff. We didn't
give up some tip shots, wedidn't give up the little roll shots that
were happening earlier in the match.So I think that kind of stood out
to me. How did you makethe decision as a staff to change libos
and change passing, you know,formate net formations, But who was next
to whom you know in there?And how are you going to benefit by

the passer defender or the attacker onthe court. Yeah, So Tennessee had
three servers that were pretty elite servers. Those balls were low, flat,
tight to the tape. They kindof put it in good space. They
knew exactly where they wanted to pinpoint. Our first ball side out kill ratio
was really really high. When wewere getting good quality swings, getting kind
of at least two option passes,and what we wanted to do is find

ways to create more opportunities and wethought switching may be able to do that.
It also allowed us to have bothGGNA serve in their rotations and kind
of work through that space and allowedus to kind of manipulate how we wanted
to change our front row at times, like we did there in the fifth
of bringing Temian to be a littlebit more of a physical player there for
the front row and then have Ozzplayed the kind of the back row and
then stay in for the rest.So we're kind of looking at more of

the first ball side out rate?Was that what was the biggest difference,
Because getting back to you know,changing the barrows and the Tennessee servers,
you talked about how elite a fewof them were. Tennessee it seemed to
really dominate that side, especially inthe fourth where there's a time when Coach
Sheffield is trying to get the crowdfired up. This crowd was ready to
get fired up, but Tennessee justkind of kept them at bay. And
I think you might give credit totheir servings for that, credit to their

whole team. I mean That's thefun part of scheduling ranked teams in the
pre conference is you're you're trying tofigure out what things can press your team,
what issues can you have, andlike a team like this, you've
got a really good lefty right side, we haven't played that, and so
knowing where that could be in thelong run against some of the top teams
in the country when you get toour conference of what you've got to be
able to fight against. So Ithink that's one of the things. I
thought their outsides knew how they wantedto handle the ball when they were in

certain kind of non perfect situations,and they manipulated our block early on really
well. And then some of thoseoff speed stuff, they knew where they
want to go within. We've justgot to be better at picking that up.
