(00:05):
After being tested in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Wednesday night, the Wisconsin Badgers
adjusted and came back with the convincingthree match sweep on Thursday evening. Now,
today, the top ranked team inthe country has another top twenty five
team on the slate as Wisconsin takeson twenty fourth ranked Tennessee in the Batcher's
home opener from the historic UW Fieldhouse. John Oudias and Pete wait with you.
(00:25):
It's number one Wisconsin versus number twentyfour Tennessee. And before today's match,
I asked head coach Kelly Sheffield whatsort of adjustments helped the most on
Thursday in that three set sweep ofthe Razorbacks. You know, I think
we had a better understanding, awardto serve how they were trying to attack
areas that we could attack it.You had more information that you have on
(00:48):
a team. Certainly the better.But yeah, I thought we'd played a
lot better in Night two. Buthey, Night one, I loved our
fight. I mean we were justin a battle boat teams playing really,
really hard, a lot of greatplays, and we hung in there.
Yeah. Two ninety five I thinkwas the hitting percentage in the five sets.
I think it's the third most everfor a five set match in rally
scoring history. But is that whatallowed you to hit about fifty points higher
(01:11):
the next night? It was justthat better understanding, like you were just
talking about. Yeah, yeah,I mean it's a you know, some
of the craziness that you can seeout of week one is teams just not
knowing each other. And I thinkyou know they were running. They came
out running the slide of the rightside quite a bit against us earlier.
(01:32):
Well they didn't said that one timein opening weekends, so you know,
we knew somebody was running back here, but we were just ignoring them because
they were choosing somewhere else. Theyget three kills out of the gate with
basically no block over there, andyou sit there and think, Mandaes Wisconsin
know how to how to defend theright side. Well, we chose to
ignore that until they got it afew times and then kind of got our
(01:53):
attention. With head coach Kelly Sheffieldthe Badgers and their home opener today against
Tennessee, I want to ask youabout Julia Orgo. She had six straight
matches of double figures. Now thatdates back to last year, so fourth
straight this year. What differences doyou see in her defense early to start
the season now and maybe you know, late this season to be able to
go on this type of stretch.Yeah, it's she's worked really hard at
(02:16):
it to to you know, beingin the right spot and being calm and
reading and it's certainly paying off.But it's it's it's she works really hard
at it. Finally, the championshipbanner gets dropped today from last season,
do you, as a coach,do you have time to when those moments
are happening to kind of appreciate thosemoments of of when the banner gets dropped.
(02:38):
No, it's I mean, thisis this is for for the fans.
I mean, we we've celebrated lastyear. We we've moved on,
and and uh, it'll be niceto have that in there. There's a
great recognition. You know, it'scool to have Danielle, you know,
and Chanelle back Danielle talk to theteam this morning and and uh, you
know, and that's cool. It'syou know, it's a moment for the
(03:00):
fans and and uh, you know, but it's we've got we've got a
big match to play today. Soit's that that'll be haul my focus you
ever, just like maybe sometimes afterpractice look up there and go that was
cool. Look at the banner,Uh, there's a lot of banners in
there. Back on the prematch showif you're at the field House home opener,
(03:49):
and back on the pre match showhere at the field House home opener,
Wisconsin versus Number twenty four Tennessee andnow joined by associate head coach Gary
White, I wanted to ask youa little bit about Arkansas before we talk
about the Valls. What did youlike most about your team in that two
OH series win against the Razorbacks.I thought we got better as the match
we're on in both of our matches. I think that's a big thing with
(04:11):
any team that's trying to improve overthe course of the season is can you
learn about your opponent as you gothrough each set? Can you learn about
opponents you got to reach match andcan you fine tune those things that?
All? Right? I now identifiedwhere we need to go attack, where
we need to change our defense, and I thought our players over the course
of both matches did a good jobof adjusting to that. We got to
do better so we don't have toget stuck in some of the holes that
we got to early in the firstset of the second match or early in
(04:33):
some of those sets. But allright, we know we can we can
come back, we can ship away. We've got the mentality that we can
be strong in big moments, comingback from a couple of set points and
working through that. But I thinkthat's one of the things as we go
through the season we gotta keep workingon. And the opponents continue to be
very high caliber here in the nonconference, including today's team. Tennessee a
top twenty five teams so far.Why is Tennessee five and oh so far
(04:56):
this year? I mean, youlook at their their st ranks, and
their physicality is part of it.They're a little bit different than the Arkansas
team who beat you on speed andtenacity and the different grits parts that they
had. Tennessee's a little bit moreof a bigger, physical team. They've
got a lefty on the right sidewho can manipulate the ball really well.
In the front row and the backrow. They've got Janasa Moore who played
Ohio State for a couple of yearsand is now transferred over to the Tennessee.
(05:19):
So that really helps. Having someexperience at the left antenna when you
when you've got to take out whatwe would say times take out the trash
of an auto system play can youtake big swings? And she's used to
being in that role. It's anew center this year for them in Curb
but she's a local kid from fromIllinois, so I think she's excited.
Probably be back in the field house. All right, best of luck today.
Thanks John. All right, that'sassociate head coach Gary White. Keep
(05:41):
it right here. The Badger Notebookis next. Or listening to Wisconsin Badger
Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers providing Sparkleto Madison for ninety years. Back at
the field House and Madison, JohnOudious and Pete wait with you. It's
sime for the Badger Notebook. AsWisconsin ranked number one in the country,
getting ready to face number twenty fourTennessee for its third match of the week.
(06:04):
The Badgers went two and oh inFayetteville, Arkansas, with a five
set win over the Razorbacks on Wednesday, that followed by a sweep of Arkansas
on Thursday. So that means theBadgers are four and oh for the eighth
time in eleven years under head coachKelly Sheffield, and Wisconsin's record against top
twenty five teams to start the seasonso far a perfect three and l.
The Badger's offense has been really goodtoo. They've had better than three hundred
(06:28):
and three of four matches this season. That's second in the Big Ten and
fourteenth in the country with a threetwenty seven hitting percentage and a moment for
fans here before the match, asthe Badgers celebrated they're twenty twenty two Big
Ten Championship with the banner drop andthe honorary banner pullers. If you will,
Danielle Hart and Chanelle bram Schreiber,we'll keep it right here. When
(06:48):
we come back. We'll have thestarting lineups in the opening serve. It's
number one Wisconsin versus number twenty fourTennessee. And you're listening to Wisconsin Badger
Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers providing Sparklethe matt Sin for ninety Welcome back to
(07:11):
the field house. I'm John Adios, joined by Pete Wade as we get
set for Badger Volleyball, the homeopener number one Wi scottsin versus number twenty
four Tennessee four, Oh Wisconsin versusfive and oh the Lady balls. All
right, let's take a look atthe lineups. First for Tennessee under their
six year coach Eve Rackham. WattsonErica Lovett is a five eleven junior outside
(07:34):
hitter about three point three kills Percette. Morgan Fingle six one on the right
side three point three kills Percette.Last year it was out near four point
four for her, so she isa dynamic offensive weapon that they will be
looking to use a lot today.Caroline Kurt is a red shirt freshman and
the starting setter over Tennissis Percette sofar in her first full season of college
(07:57):
volleyball. Jan Asian Moore is asix foot grad student and a transfer from
Ohio State, so the Badgers veryfamiliar with more. Claudia Polic, a
six foot six and a middle blockerred shirt sophomore, is alberteen about one
kill percent so far this season.Hekey Granberry six three and a sophomore middle
(08:18):
blocker hits four thirty eight for Tennessee, and Jay Torres, five seven grad
student, is the Libero, atransfer from Bowling Green starting lineup for the
Wisconsin Badgers four and no under eleventhyear coach Kelly Sheffield. Caroline Crawford six
three middle blocker, the senior overone point two blocks per set for the
(08:39):
Badgers this season. Devin Robinson sixtwo on the right side at twenty one
kills Wednesday against Arkansas, followed thatup with eleven and hit over four hundred
against the Razorbacks, is he askedfor in five eleven grad student one hundred
sixty three career races, three awayfrom tying the school record for from breaking
it. Temmy Thomas Ai Lara sixtwo outside hit or a grad Trams from
(09:00):
Northwestern this season two point four killsper sette for Tammy. Sarah Franklin six
four, also on the left side, the red shirt junior almost three point
seven kills per sette this season.Four Wisconsin Carter Booth in the middle six
seven middle blocker, sophomore transfer fromMinnesota one point three blocks per sette this
season. Julio Joe will be alibero in place of gulj gus tecond six
(09:22):
foot junior fromschen, Poland played herhigh school volleyball elite Zamogu knock stop,
don't Sammy storsfos Portoveego and stone JatayAnd she's had six straight matches dating back
to last season with ten or moredigs and she'll be the libero today.
Pete thoughts before first serve as theBadgers are playing their third match of the
week. It's an exciting afternoon andthe game hasn't even started yet. We
have the banner drop from last year'sBig Ten Championship season as four euro for
(09:46):
the Badgers nine overall Big Ten Championships. It's just been a great program for
decades and decades, thirty or fortyyears with great fans the whole time.
And there we have another great afternoonand volleyball against Tennessee, which is a
strong team with five different tram comingin. You mentioned thirty or forty years
of strong volleyball, and it's beenabout that time frame that the Badgers had
faced Tennessee. The last time theyfaced over forty years ago. Last time,
(10:09):
nineteen eighty one was the last timeWisconsin played Tennessee. It was at
a neutral side. It was aBadger's loss in three sets. Yeah,
we had to look that up becauseI said I in my ten year.
I didn't ever remember playing against him. Some teams you play a lot,
even if they're not in your conference. You run across them a lot of
Tennessee was not one of those. But they are a good athletic team.
They're picked as we finished third inthe conference. This here, yeah,
(10:31):
like I mentioned, five and oh, Start beats San Diego recently, the
big win for San Diego. Teamthat looks a lot different than last year,
but a team that made it tothe final four. Ask Burns sends
one over laser to the near sidecorner. Tennessee picks it up near side.
That's more popped up by Franklin inthe back row set to the right.
That's Robinson tipping down the line andTorres sneaks in there with the dig
(10:52):
left side more than blasted on theline for the kill. That's the transfer
gen Asia Moore. She used tobe a black guy, She's now a
lady. Vault On the first tenTennessee is swaying great dig diving to a
right from the middle back. Franklinmade a great play getting it up,
but then Tennessee finished it off onthe left side attack again straight down the
line right in Ashbourne's lap three badgerpassers Tammy and the laugh back, Franklin
middle back, and it's O Joeright back. It goes right to Julia
(11:15):
spins a pass, a tad offto the right, set to the left,
pin swing by Timmy stopped and covered. Here comes Wisconsin, a swing
coming up by Robinson right side,so tip inside to the right front.
It's pinball the round and what asay by Tour is to keep it over.
On a free ball, Ashbourne SATsthe middle. Booth terminates that play
right there. That shoots it inthe middle to the middle. Blocker was
unstoppable and the two matches against Arkansas, Booth had just one hitting error in
(11:37):
the two matches combined. It's easyto understand that when you've got somebody who's
six seven, then they're moving alongthe net. You don't really know how
why that thirty one is going tobe. Generally thirty one means three feet
forward a foot above the net,but it could be four feet five foot.
You never know. Timmy Thomas withthat jump top spin pin ball around
is gonna fall. It's gonna bea kill four Tennessee. They may get
(12:00):
two one lady balls on top ofthe badgers back to that booth and how
you know it's hard to stop herright there in the middle. Just to
provide some more context of those numbers, twelve kills, no errors off,
nineteen swings on Wednesday, eight kills, one error off, eleven attempts,
and the majority of them were rightthere in the middle of the net.
And that shoots out another great additionto the program of transfer coming in.
(12:22):
But somebody who they're getting more andmore used to and comfortable with serve goes
and handled by booth, chased downby Aspurn on the left sideline. Then
Franklin takes a hack at it andrips it cross court for the kill.
Out of system. There is SarahFranklin making it two each. Yeah,
that's set dropped in just a littlebit, which gave her a chance to
go more hard cross court. Theblock kind of passed her up a little
bit. She went crosscourt fourteen footline, about five feet in from the
(12:46):
sideline. Sarah Franklin, who,by the way, her eligibility. I'll
explain this in a second. Here'sthe serve I O joe cross court to
the back right, goes to theright side. That's spingle and Fingle goes
wide and lawn swinging it from theright. Basically, Sarah Franklin has been
reclassified. She was a red shirtjunior going into this season. This is
(13:09):
now officially her senior season after ared shirt at Michigan State got denied by
the NCAA and some of those thingsget delayed and they don't know for a
year or two what they're really goingto decide. Swing by fingo on the
outside, and that's exactly what happenedhere Wisconsin with the dig gig's out there
now is dyes and Robinson right sideblasts one right near the ten foot line
right at fingal and it's a pointfour two. Wisconsin first said, now
(13:33):
you can tell Tennessee is a goodathletic team, well trained, and they've
gone some good rallies already. Butthe Badger is starting to pull away a
little bit here early here Zelia oJoe playing libero for the Badgers here today,
toss into the air, puts itin play to the back right corner.
Tennessee throws it up front to Kurrbig shot on the left side by
Lovett, picked up by Wisconsin defensivelyand Franklin blasts it off the block and
(13:54):
goes straight down off the block forthe kill. You know I talked about
Julia O'shew and the double digit digperformances she's had recently. Well, Sarah
Franklin has had seven straight matches datingback to last year with ten or more
kills. So offensively, Franklin hasbeen a beast and she's off to a
two for two start today. Crosscourt serving in by Ojo, Tennessee flips
(14:16):
it off to the left. That'slove. It popped up by gg.
Now the set izzy left side,Franklin tool shot good Ricochet's right off that
Tennessee blocking out of bounds. Thatis the third kill for Franklin and it's
a four make it a five nothingrun for Wisconsin. Yeah, a different
role for Ojo this year. Obviously, she's starting out as liberrow and you
know, when she's a front rowattacker, she's got so much to focus
(14:39):
on pass or attack. But hereit's just dig dig dig dig dig,
dig, past dig, pasting pass. She can really focus on improve that
game. Two great pass up frontby Torres, a high tip up and
over the block. That's fingal withthe kill. She's a preseason All SEC
selection. Was a second team AllAmerican last year. Yeah, nice lefting
on the right side, and thatwas a perfect tip. She had banged
a couple of ball one went long, but this one was just a nice
(15:01):
open hand tip shot over the topof the block. Teased him a little
bit, but just fell at thefive foot line. Stops at five nothing.
Run fielded by Robinson on silver receiveand Devin gets a swing right back
and she ricochets off the block forthe kill side out to Wisconsin. They
take care of business on that Tennesseeserve seven three. Yeah, Tennessee trying
(15:22):
to go short right front to Robinsonto try to test her a little bit,
seem as you can handle a bottle, and she handled it perfectly,
put it right on target, andshe benefited by getting the set right back
at her and got the killer.Rattled through the blocking down two kills off
four swings already for Robinson, whowas a third team All American last year
for the Badgers. It over fourhundred on Thursday night against Arkansas and had
(15:45):
eleven kills and just three sets. Here's Hamil serving zone one to zone one
of Tennessee middle attacks wiped out inthe middle by the balls picked up by
Hamile bump set who's tack into theleft side. Franklin cuts it inside for
the kill, and once again that'sa sharp angle from Franklin. And that
place started with Crawford at the net, keeping her hands high as a middle
blocker and deflecting the quick set fromTennessee so that her team could run it
(16:08):
right back and go to the outsideof Franklin for another code cross court eight
to three, time out Tennessee. The Badger's lead by five in the opening
set back with more after this, you're listening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball, presented
by Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle toMadison for ninety years. A six to
(16:41):
one run by the Badgers, JohnOdias and Pete wait with you, and
it has Wisconsin on top of Tennesseeand the home opener at the field House
in Madison this afternoon eight to threeWisconsin, and that Badger's offense, Pete,
which comes into today hitting three twentyseven, that's number fourteen in the
entire country. Seven kills, tenswings, no errors. Well, Franklin
(17:02):
on the outside, she's so toughto stop because she's banged it down the
line off the block a couple oftimes. Then she went sharp cross court
two or three times, so theblock doesn't know quite where to set up
and the defenders need to get aroundthe block, cross court, seal up
the line, do the best theycan. But she's done really well.
Here's Hamil serving following the Tennessee tamout five point Wisconsin lead. Serves it
to the middle back. Kurt pulledaway from the net setting. That's a
(17:26):
swing by Fingle, cross court stopby Hamil. Then Franklin gets another attack
attempt and again she's able to connectfour kill, nine three Wisconsin, And
that is Sarah Franklin's fifth kill ofthe first set. Yeah, five kills,
no errors. And again the balldropped inside a little bit on the
set. The middle blocker went outand reached out instead of stopping inside a
(17:48):
little bit, pressing cross court leftand getting a block. Franklin got another
kill right off the left front defender'shead. Franklin five for five in this
first set. Hamil short surf flippedover the top of the net. Kerr
was right there right place. Hereis Fingal deep no touch at the net,
yes point Wisconsin. There was notouch up front at the net by
(18:11):
the Badger's blockers. Ten seven Wisconsinfirst set Yeah, Fingo one killed,
two errors and five attempts. Theonly kill she has is the open hand
too. Tennessee three kills overall, two errors off eleven swings. Badgers are
now eight for eleven with no errors. Here's Hamile again. One of the
Badgers really were successful Wednesday night.Behind the sail this line one of the
(18:33):
two or an aspur and tip byFingals save by Wisconsin down ball Franklin grabbed
by Tennessee. Kurr will set rightside Thingle's suits to block over dig there
by Hamil back to Tennessee left side. Love it did she get it?
No? It went long, notouch at a hitting error by Tennessee puts
Wisconsin on top by a score ofeleven to three. Ye Hamil made a
(18:56):
great dig from the right back fromthe right side of Tennessee Fingal. Great
job just keeping in play. Andthen the next time Tennessee took the swing,
they went long down the line maybesix inches own and now Red Shirt's
sophomore middle blocker Emily Beaker comes intothe match replacing Keiki Granberry a six three
sophomore. So back to Wisconsin. Here's MJ serving three passers, waiting for
(19:19):
the lady falls. It goes tothe right back, stepping in front of
Toras on serve receive and there's apushover on the right side. That's Fingo
getting denied. It was King,by the way, who stepped in front
of Tores on serve receive. Andnow it's twelve three. After the Badgers
get that point, a block ofFingal. Yeah, that back set by
the Tennessee center to Fingal just wastoo tight and she just said, nowhere
(19:41):
to go. She tried to takea swing and the Badger block was all
over it. It's the first blockof the match for Wisconsin. They had
seventeen on Wednesday night in five setsagainst Arkansas. Really dominant at the net
against the Razorbacks. Here's Hammel goingcross court. That one had some movement
on it. Kurse sets in theleft side and love it con x off
the Badger block to stop a sixnothing ron But by then, Pete a
(20:03):
lot of damage had been done. It's twelve four. Yeah. I thought
it was interesting how Tennessee subbed outtheir middle blocker who really had not done
anything wrong, hadn't even gotten set. But that's what happens sometimes, and
kids playing ball in high school orclub ball understands it's not always your fault,
but sometimes the coach needs to tryto change the momentum. Just slow
it down a little bit, andnow they dig get a side up.
But it took him a couple oftries. Fingle serving at gus Techen,
(20:23):
who got ace. The pass byGig goes over the net and out of
balance toward the Tennessee bench. It'san ace for Fingle, her fourth of
the season. Another new role forguz Techen two. Because as a libarrow,
you're out there all the time playingdefense a lot of rotations. As
a defensive specialists, you're out therefor three in the back road, then
you gotta sit for three and yougotta get back in. So it's it's
(20:44):
different. It's harder to stay ina rhythm that time. She spins the
past to Hammel, who sets theSmreck, who defights it on the attack
off the defensive Tennessee and high highinto the stands Anna Smrek with the termination
thirteen five Wisconsin. Smrek pounded thatone little away on the thirty one center
gut and pushed forward. Hamil wasabout center court, about five feet off
the net. That's just so toughto stop at. It started with a
(21:07):
very good pass and a great set, and the only blocker up there was
Beaker, who had just been putinto the match. Welcome. Yeah,
here is six foot nine right inyour face. Fingle right side, ricochets
off the block, got the touch, Hamile got the dig bump set oh
show left side Tammy Thomas I Lauraand a dig by Torres. Here's the
nearest side attack by Tennessee and punchingat cross court for the kill is Erica
(21:30):
Lovett, the junior. About threepoint two kills per set for her.
But Wisconsin's in control in this firstit's thirteen six, and you say that
about Beaker coming and off the bench. She's six to five. That used
to be the tall player on thecourt. Now you've got six seven,
six nine and she's feeling short outthere. Times have changed. Love It
(21:51):
floats it right at os Yo,great past to Hamil, back row,
attacked by Franklin right off the blockof Beaker and straight down. So Sarah
Franklin still without a miss. Fourteensix and for Franklin that has six kills
off seven swings. You know, with the Badgers running those two setter offense
with a cetter always in the backrow, three hitters in the front row,
plus when you've got Franklin coming outof the back row, the defenders
(22:11):
and the blockers have to defend threein the front and Franklin in the back.
There's a lot of gaps in thatblock for the Badger attackers. Eight
point was scots and lead in theopening set. Crawford serving back row.
Here's the setter dump. Curb poppedup. Hamil saved Wisconsin and the free
ball goes wide wide on the farsideline. Otherwise the Badgers almost lived to
(22:32):
fight another play. Hamml's playing somedefense out there. It's good to see.
Sometimes setters get accused of not playinggood defense, but the Badger setters
have always been good at it.She's made a couple of nice ones already,
and that was a one handed divingplay off the setter dump from Tennessee.
It's a seven point lead for Wisconsin. The Badgers have led by as
many as nine in the first set. Tennessee right to left serve at Franklin
(22:55):
deep back middle, perfect pass tohammil sets the spreck right side. Oh
did she get the hands because theywent well past the headline. Now punched
way deep. Yeah, that onesailed on her. She just mistimed a
little bit. Arm came through alittle I can't sell it this later early,
but did not hit her her wholepalm and have any topspin on it.
And sometimes I'm not saying that wasthe case there, but sometimes you're
(23:17):
looking for just a you know, blasting off high hands and sometimes they can
get away. Franklin pack Row,how about that flies in source and slams
it right off the middle Blocker Grandberryof Tennessee Point, Wisconsin. It's fifteen
to eight the Badgers in the firstand at six nine Smerek banging off high
hands. Blocker's hands are in hishand high as her hands. She's actually
got to bring it down to theblock, you know, to try to
(23:38):
find him, which is actually harderthan a smaller attacker hitting up at a
bigger block. Ashberg his middle backKerr sets to the outside. There's more
(24:03):
clubbing it off the block. Tennesseegets its ninth point, but the Badger's
lead in the first fifteen to nineYeah, nice swing by More on the
left side, just high seam againstthe badger block and just rattled down about
the ten foot line line side. There comes Tennessee serving. That's Kerr Wisconsin.
(24:25):
Hassett out the system, bumps atIzzy left side, Temmy and it's
dug by Torres. Now Tennessee goesfar side and kind of just swiping it
and pushing it off the block ifyou will. Was spingle. Yeah.
I think Booth was a little latecoming from the middle getting into the left
side and she reached out to theleft to the right side attacker, but
she did not penetrate and it wentdown her front. But great running bump
(24:48):
set by easy Ashburn. She wasthree quarters way across the court diving to
get that in play. Oh y'all. On serve receive, Ashburn sets up
the back row for Franklin. Stopback row by Tennessee near side. There's
more again. Janasia Moore gets itaround the block and down three point one
kills percent. She average just aboutthree last season for the buck Eys,
and Tennessee runs a pretty fast offense. When they pass well and hold the
(25:10):
middle more, it's a tough jobfor the middle blockers to get to the
outside, and they found the scenethat time and threw it down over Joe
Serve received Ashburn runs it to theright side, cross court kill Devin Robinson.
Robinson text one more on for theBadgers here in the first set.
(25:30):
That's her third kill. It's Wisconsinsixteen Tennessee eleven. And that's a bit
of a new rankle for Robinson comingout of serve, receives kind of starts
in the middle of the court andheads over the right side, runs a
slide where often we're used to seeingher go off two feet. Here's Tammy
into the net on her serve sixteentwelve Wisconsin. Like I said, head
(25:51):
lad by as many as nine inthis first set. Right now, it's
a four point lead for the numberone ranked Badgers. Yeah, Timmy's all
in a new position for her, obviously, coming in as a transfer from
Northwestern. She's used to be onthe court all the time, all the
time. But she goes and missesa jump server and then she's out and
Gutstikins in their past four. Sothere's a lot of things for the Badgers
(26:12):
to adjust to in different roles. And it goes at Gutsticken and here's aspern
setting left side. Franklin wills theshot and it drops down right in in
front of the DS and the backrow king. Yeah. That open hand
hand roll shot by Franklin just shehas so many shots we've talked about the
line, hard cross court off thetop of the block and an open hand
(26:32):
roll shot, which not a lotof players have in the college game.
She did that really well. Fivepoint Wisconsin lead. Here's the Badger's starting
the barrel today. Oh show thejunior from Poland serving a deep back roll
set to the right side. Fingalgot the hands and it drops down for
the kill. Morgan Fingle of Tennessee, one of their better attackers, with
(26:52):
their third kill seventeen thirteen Wisconsin leads. Yeah. Fingal three kills three ers,
So she's been struggling early, butthat was her best shot yet.
Off the top of the badge ofblock, Torres with the Serve Goods seconds
passed to the right, chased downby Robinson and Save dropped back and playing
a free ball delivered by Crawford.Tennessee. Kurt takes a peek at the
defense, sets to the middle andBeaker slams it down for the kill in
(27:15):
the middle of the net point.Tennessee balls making a mini come back.
Here passed the midway point of thefirst Yeah, I've been Crawford for the
Badgers. Is the smaller blocker, don't have to deal with a six three
and Meekers six five, so she'sgot a little highly advantage there. And
it's a nice, perfect pass, quick set and pounded it down. It's
always short serve owes you in goodsecond collide on serve receipt left side,
Franklin power shot torres underneath it forTennessee left side. Here's love it on.
(27:40):
A little hesitation on her approach, able to tip up and over the
block and down Tennessee's pushing seventeen fifteen. The Badger's lead is down to two
great tig by Tennessee, and itactually grazed off the scoreboard, the video
board and the SETA did a greatjob just seeing that it was gonna graze
it and adjust her feet and madea nice set outside and then a nice
tip over the block. Time takenby the Badgers. It's a three nothing
(28:02):
run by the lady falls. It'sWisconsin seventeen, Tennessee fifteen in the first
set back after this break, you'relistening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman
Steelers, providing Sparkle to Madison forninety years. Three nothing run by twenty
(28:29):
fourth ranked Tennessee and the top rankedBadgers lead by two seventeen fifteen. And
there's a I gotta talk about Irenethe Badger fan on the video board right
now. My first Badger game andit's volleyball. The sign reads I'm ninety
four years old and it says I'mninety four and a half a half.
(28:53):
Well, she's right in the frontrows. I'm hoping she goes to helpers
next door paying attention to no ballcomes flying at her. Welcome to Badger
Volleyball, Irene, hope you enjoythe game. Here's a swing on the
left side stop by Wisconsin. Backto Tennessee. Love it tries again left
side, bounces off the Badger ofblock. Gigi has the stop of the
backgrow Hi set up right side forRobinson underneath the curve, but her gig
(29:15):
goes over and out kill Robinson.Point. Wisconsin stops the three nothing run
and the Badgers lead by three. And that was an important side out for
the Badgers and the points, andRuchikin made a nice twirling dig a little
bit kind of turned to her left. He's got apparently with her fist,
but kept it in play and andthen nice swing for the kill. Eighteen
fifteen three point Wisconsin lead. Here'sHamil the Badger of two setters and the
(29:44):
six two Wisconsin offense. Service ofthe back right corner kurchases down the pass
of the back row sets the Fingalgoes inside the block, and Morgan Fingal
connects six one right side player.I mentioned she was preseason All SEC and
a second team All American in aseason ago. Yeah, she's a nice
athlete lefty, and it's a littledifferent setting up as a block on the
lefties, and she's starting to heatup a little slow start, but she's
(30:07):
getting better now. But she justrotated to the back row to serve.
They's had sixteen kills in the winby Tennessee over San Diego, hit over
three hundred, and then most recentlyagainst Boston College, had nine kills and
hit over three hundred in the Tennesseevictory. They're five and oh taking on
four and oh Wisconsin. Here isa serve by Fingal a fastball right off
the top of the platform, orFranklin who gets it back on the seven
(30:30):
on the left and then crushes akill. Nineteen to sixteen. Now she's
sent a rocket of a serve overand Franklin kind of took it on her
shoulder by sept the pass, butit was settable. She got to the
outside and then she finished it off. Yeah, I kind of knocked Franklin
backwards a couple of steps before shecomes back and gets the kill for Wisconsin.
That is her ninth kill of thefirst set served Tennessee. Here comes
(30:53):
curves back set, right back attackFingal along got away from her and the
Badgers need five points for the firstset victory. Yeah, they're, you
know, trying to feud Fingal becauseshe's getting happen. She hit that one
on the right back and it justkind of sails. She went for the
high hands and missed. Tennessee takesa time out. Do we have a
(31:15):
timeout available? Keep it here?Twenty to sixteen. Number one ranked Wisconsin
leads the Tennessee volunteers here in theopening set at the field House. Fun
moment before the match started, Peteas Danielle Hart and Chanelle bram Schreiber,
former Wisconsin Badgers, part of thattwenty two Big Ten championship team. We're
(31:37):
able to unveil the championship banner hereat the field houses. Fun moment for
the fans, and that's something thatI talked to Kelly about. You'll hear
I talked with Joscelyn Boyer coming upon the intermission interview about and to the
players and to the staff, it'smore about, like we celebrated twenty twenty
two, this is more for thefans today, that's true, and you
can it's a big, solid crowdhere today in a hot afternoon outs.
(32:00):
But we got the air conditioning nowthese days, which is a nice change
in the field house. Used tobe we'd be wiping the floor half the
time because of all the sweat, but now it's not happening. It's just
pretty normal in here. Comfortable. But yeah, what a great thing for
those oh night to come in.And we've got another alumni about six feet
to our right, Haley Nelson doingthe TV call, So it's neat to
have her back in the field house. Also, she had a great career.
(32:21):
Yeah, absolutely part of the twentyfourteen Big Ten Championship squad, as
well as Haley Nelson. So yeah, it's it's cool to see all these
alumen we're working on. Perhapptive,we can get Chanelle or Danielle up here
just to talk for a little bitin between a set or during a set
rather so. The batchers right nowhitting five sixty fifteen kills, twenty five
swings, Tennessee twelve kills, fiveerrors, hitting two forty one and what
(32:45):
a fantastic start for Sarah Franklin ninekills already. She's looking for her eighth
straight match of ten or more killsdating back to last season, and four
point lead for the Batchers nine kills, no airs. This is the first
set I know she's she is justdominating right now. Yeah, she want
to start to the season she's hadalready. Franklin's back to serve almost three
(33:13):
point seven kills per set for thepreseason all Big Ten selection. Kurr turns
and tries to joust with Timmy pushesback. Tennessee now attacks from the left,
love it denied and covered. Tennesseewill try love it again near side,
goes up and over the block.Doug left back by O Joe.
Franklin callsport bumps out. It's tight. Where's Thomas Lara with a tip up
and over the block, Tennessee underneathand that grow fingle with the pop.
(33:35):
Right, there's Hamil bump set forthe left side. Here is Thomas I
Laura deep ackin Tammy time and theBadger's need four for the first set victory.
A long rally, great defense onboth sides, but that's what Timmy
Thomas is used to doing it forquestions. She was the go to player.
So when it's a long rally andthe block knows it's going out to
her, she has not phased atall. She had a nice high cross
(33:55):
court shot off the top of theblock for the kill, and that's her
first kill of the set. Franklin'sgot, like I said, nine of
the sixteen for Wisconsin. Now she'sserving, she's dealing, goes deep.
That one's gonna fall. She justdealt up that ace. Sarah Franklin gets
the ace, said Wisconsin needs three. Yeah. It looks like Kurr serves
(34:16):
better this year too, just comingwith a little more pace on the ball.
That was a nice ace for Franklin. It's her second ace of the
season. Let's look for number three. This one lined down the near sideline.
Kerr in the pocket sets to theleft side, stopped by the Badger's
(34:38):
defense. Now they're smack reaching upand pushing it down and a net violation
against Tennessee. Wisconsin's gonna get ittwenty three sixteen and the ball got reflected
back up over those top of thenet just but smek and reach so high.
I think the Tennessee players swiped atit but missed the ball because she
got it first, and then theyswung in the net for nothing for the
(35:00):
Badgers. Here's a serve again byFranklin, back pedaling set by Kur the
center of Tennessee finding backgrol. That'smore. Wisconsin has it Timmy left side,
yep, blasting it off. Loveit in the left front of the
Tennessee side of the court. It'sset point Wisconsin again. Bump set by
Ozo to the left side and theblockers they're waiting for but Timmy Thomas went
(35:22):
sharp cross court off the shoulder ofthe left front defender. Correction. Now
a six nothing run for Wisconsin onset point in the first Franklin serving left
back love. It's pass finds, curve backgrow, roll along the attack attempt
by Fingo, and that's gonna doit for the first set. The Badger's
going a seven zip run to endit and capture the first twenty five sixteen
(35:45):
and Tennessee put a little pressure onthe Badgers midway through the set, but
the Badgers just came on strong andjust took the game. Just with the
power game. There was a greatfinish to the first set. Seven oh
run ends at twenty five sixteen withsky and the first we'll get back with
the second set. After this break, you're listening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball,
presented by Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkleto Madison for ninety years. If they're
(36:15):
coming once, you try to welcomeback to the field house, John Audious
and Pete waits with you. It'sthe Badger's winning that first set, Pete
twenty five sixteen. This was aneighteen sixteen score in favor of Wisconsin until
that seven old run to end it. So you look at the final score
the first set and you go,okay, well, Wisconsin one by nine,
(36:36):
Yeah, that's pretty good, prettygood win over But this was they
did it think, so that pushat the end, Yeah, it was
closer right at the middle. ButWisconsin's push, their efficiency is crazy good.
Eighteen kills one air. You gotFranklin leading with nine kills no airs,
and then Robinson four kills two airs, Fingal for Tennessee four kills five
(36:58):
here, so they're leading attacker ishitting negative and overall as a team twelve
kills six airs. So that's thebig difference in that. Really a lot
of it took place in those lastseven or eight points that the Badgers surged
forward nine kills from Sarah Franklin ina six ninety two attack percentage, no
hitting errors off thirteen swings, Robinsonfour kills, Tammy had two and a
(37:22):
spreckhead at two of three, aswell as the Badgers able to win that
opening stat by score twenty five tosixteen. All right, so well,
Scottson and Tennessee ready for the secondset. By the way, we hope
(37:52):
to be joined by multitasking here engineerand broad cast John Odious waiting and hopefully
be joined by Danielle hart An ChanelleBramstriver at some point two poy. That'd
be awesome as long as they're inthe gym and they're here for the ceremony.
(38:13):
Hit him up here and here's someof their thoughts. I would be
great. Okay, here we go. Tennessee starting the second set, Curse
sends a fastball at Ohio one handset up, pushed over by booth.
Tennessee grabs it left side more andunderneath it was osheo hip bump set gg.
Franklin's gonna have to kind of stopat the ten foot line and said,
(38:36):
but basically it's a down ball overleft side more than fires a rocket
down the sideline off Ashburn for thekill. One nothing. Tennessee start to
the second Yeah, Tennessee plays atough schedule in a tough conference, so
they're certainly taking a loss to Wisconsinthere doing some phase them. You kind
of got a feel for the Badgers, and they hung in there for a
while and they thought they had him. So we'll see if they change anything
strategically. On the second set.Jump served there, jump float serve,
(39:02):
I should say by Tennessee left side. Franklin goes down toward the back row
and right in front of love it. Who could not get that dig Sarah
Franklin makes it one one second setand nice passed by the Badger's just enough
to have a busy jump set atthe net and hold with CC and then
go over the top to the outsidewhere she had kind of a gap in
(39:22):
the block. Who was able tokind of chop it. Excuse me,
Franklin, chop it through there. Here's Wisconsin's Lebero. Julia Ozell fires it
right to left, left side, set up more underhand tip right. There's
Ashburn near the ten foot line.Bump set finds Robinson ricochets off the top
of the block and save near theend line by Tennessee. Now a big
swing by More goes wide from theinside left than a point to Wisconsin after
(39:45):
the Tennessee hitting error and the Badger'slead by a score two one early second
all right, great bump set bythe Tennessee right side. She was five
feet off the court on the rightall the way cross court, so the
outside had to swing at it.She also had a big block waiting for
and she avoided the block and andhit out of bombs. There's oshew other
good that Serve Torres had to diveto a left to get it. Serve
received tight tapped by more Wisconsin hasit inside the ten foot line. Then
(40:08):
Robinson powers one off the defense. In the back row, there's Robinson soaring
from the right side. Have youhit there? Three one? And the
last two sets by Kerr the Tennesseecenter have just been tight. They've been
foot and a half from the net, maybe two feet at the most.
But we have a big block upthere that's too tight for most attackers,
and she just had to just savethem and throw them over the Badgers.
(40:30):
O show back row at Torres middleattacks snapped down by Graham Berry killed there
for Tennessee. Makes it three two. Yeah. Ojo's serve seems tougher and
more pace on it right now,and again her legs won't feel so tired
from all the jumping in the frontrow. She's just playing back road a
little more fresh attitude to focus outthere. There's King six one ds toss
(40:58):
into the air, right hand floatsit at Goods. Check in Aspern on
the run bump set near side,Franklin right at Tours on the left back
Tennessee will go off to the leftside and there's a fucking block. It's
Robinson and Crawford stopping the shot onthe outside of love it. Four two
was Scottson's second block today for theBadgers. Yeah, that one was mostly
Robinson. It was all Robinson downthe line. She sealed it up at
(41:19):
the ANTWNA, squared up on theswing block, penetrator over the net,
back down to the center of thecourt. Perfect technique and blocked by Robinson.
On my last intermission interview, Iasked Devin Robinson what she loves most
about volleyball blocking. Oh, yeah, that's a great feeling. Most players
would tell you that. Here's Hamilserving from zone one down the far sideline
curve, sets right side, atip into the block, fingle back over
(41:43):
to Tennessee and then it's popped overand out after it's got redirected or deflected
off King Again. I'm sure thecenter for Tennessee occurs not trying to but
she set that back set two tightand again the Tennessee attacker had to go
up fingal that time just to tryto throw at the Badger block and she
got time. Third block of thematch for the Badgers. Three Tennessee passers
(42:04):
awaiting Hammel, who fires down theleft sideline spinning pass finds curR in the
pocket. Right side swing by Fingle, played off the net by Wisconsin and
then it's gonna fall count it forFingal. She has a team high now
five kills but a negative attack percentageso far with six hitting errors for Morgan
Fingal of Tennessee and nice cross courtshot by Fingal and Hammel had to dive
forward and sprawl out on the floor, kind of got it with her fist
(42:25):
and shot it into the center ofthe net and sometimes it pops out of
there nicely. But it was kindof tough for Crawford get that one out
which seconds just got aced her pastgoes off to the right, nearly hits
the pin on the top of thenet. It's an ace for Torrez the
Tennessee Liberl's that's two bad passes forGoods Tech, and so it'll be interesting.
(42:45):
This is her challenges to not bea target out there and be consistent
for her her team. There's anice pass by we're just talking the guest
stept In from The Oh Show onthe Badgers run it too. Franklin on
the left side, who terminates togive the Badgers a six four advantage.
And yeah, that's Good's tech andstepping right in front of Ojo on service
eas She's confident so getting you know, getting aced one time. Sometimes the
(43:07):
ball just floats. It's a knuckleball, like in baseball. It's just really
hard. Sometimes you're gonna get ace. But she bounced right back and passed
the nice ball. Wisconsin has oneace today. It comes from Sarah Franklin
who serves deep at Torah's great passup front Kurve kind of Tobaker who punched
one over and down for the Tennesseekill, and the Volunteers and the Badgers
(43:28):
are tied at six. Yeah, and in this case, Tennessee is the
mismatch with the Beaker six five overCrawford. And then in the middle of
sixty three score correction, Wisconsin leadsby one. That was Tennessee's fifth point
of the set. Six five. There come the lady Valls behind the line.
It's Fingle Thomas ei Lar spins ahigh one to Hammel Franklin back row
(43:53):
with a powerful shot dug by Fingaland the right back. I love it
got rejected on the far side.Crawford teaming up another Bucky block which is
heating up now. In this secondset. Yeah, really nice job that
time by Simon. We've got Crawfordon the right side. Swreck in the
middle goes Crawford who set up theball well and she got her hands on
the block again. That was onlyabout three feet away from the net,
(44:15):
and I think Tennessee would do betterto get a five to seven feet off
the net at least three blocks thisset so far for Wisconsin as a team.
Crawford has this serve rough side anotherBucky block. Love it got rejected.
Wiscotsin is really heating up at thenet right now. It's eight five.
Yeah. Tennessee paid the price thattime. When Wisconsin rotated, they
(44:37):
brought Booth to the front so theyhad six seven, six nine, and
then put Smrek on the right sideeven a bigger block. Then she got
roofed by their play before three pointlead four blocks this set for Wisconsin.
Time out Tennessee early in the secondit's the Badger's eight the Leady balls five.
You're listening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presentedby Goodman's Jewelers providing Sparkle the Madison
(44:59):
for ninety years and welcome back tothe UW field House. John Audius and
Pete wait with you. Number oneWisconsin versus number twenty four Tennessee. Today,
Wisconsin won the first set twenty fivesixteen second set here it's eight five,
(45:20):
and all of a sudden, theBadger block, which had one in
the first set, now with fourin the second set. Well, Tennessee
took the time out and the headcoach let the whole team go to the
bench except the center, and shestood separately ten feet away and talk to
her about what she needs to do. And maybe she was talking to her
about get the ball off the netfor your attackers so they can have some
room to swing, or maybe shesaid run the middle a little bit more
(45:40):
and get some gaps for the outsideafter that. So we'll see if they
change up their strategy a little bit. Last couple of points for the Badgers
have been blocks. Here's a servedby Crawford that trickles just off the top
of the tape. Beaker goes intothat block and stop but covered now on
the far side, they tip upand over the block. Camill flies in
with a right fisted save. Here'sTammy trying to get the hands on the
left side, right in front ofthe upp official and she goes deep.
(46:05):
Yeah, that's time. Tennessee onthe outside love it, you know,
tried to she got blocked a coupleof times, so this time she'd tipped
it, which is what you want. And then the Badgers ran their offense.
But I think it was the Badgersat that time said it a little
too tight on the outside. Hamileon the outside to time, he just
was too tight, and she sailedit long. Here's love it. Transfer
from Long Beach State. Last coupleof matches, she's been good defensively in
(46:30):
the back row with double digit digs. She has four digs today and she'll
fire one at Franklin Mine drive pass. And then Hamil tried to pop up
a bump set, but it goesover the net and out. It's an
ace for love it. It's Wisconsin'slead is down to one. You mentioned
transfer wander State. Also from OhioState. More sasire Moore. She's a
(46:51):
fifth year kid and she's got fourkills one year here. So that's a
kid from the Big ten who nowis with Tennessee. That the Badgers are
having to deal with a game rightside brack up and over the double block,
and she Lions one cross court andin for the kill. Two point
Badger's lead. They lead one zipin the match. When she reaches high
and goes deep cross court from theright side. Really nobody can stop that.
(47:14):
There's not a block big enough andthat was a perfect shot within six
inches of the inline. Here comesAshburn stepping over to serve from the left
back area. Now for Wisconsin rightto left in play, there comes Tennessee
(47:34):
right side, tapped over by Fingleand it falls. She did not have
the angle and she just shoved somethingover and it drops right in the middle
back. Yeah, Robinson kind ofmade a motion like she was going for
the ball, and she said,oh, I shouldn't take that. But
then Ojo was thinking she was goingto take the ball. And that's something
as ojos Lebarrow is gonna have totake control back there and really be loud
(47:55):
those front row players get out ofthe way. That communication is something I
think Wisconsin kind of had. Itwas a little tricky in the first step.
Thursday night against Arkansas, they hada couple of balls just dropped down.
Here's a shot left side. ThomasEilaa gets rejected by Tennessee first of
lady Vall's block of the match, and we're tied at nine. But my
point was there were some communication errorsagainst Arkansas a few times over the last
(48:19):
couple of days. Yeah, youplayed good teams and they're gonna challenge you
with a lot of different situations, and Badgers are getting used to some new
positions and some new people on thecourt. Served by Sydney Jeans, she's
a freshman. Wisconsin couldn't barely handleit. Booth tapped it over, and
then a shot by Granberry gets rejectedand another Bucky block number six of the
day four Wisconsin and the Badgers arescrambling just to get back to the net,
(48:40):
and I think the Tennessee center Kerrmade a mistake by just going to
her middle blocker on the far rightside of the court, so the Badgers
didn't not to move at all, right, Robinson just stuck her hands up
there. If she had shoved, you know, thrown them to the far
outside, she might have had oneon one for her attacker's Booth and Robinson
up there at the net for Wisconsinclaiming that sixth block, fifth of the
(49:00):
set, and the University of Wisconsinhas a one point lead. Now ten
nine seconds sat here is Gigi.Three passers waiting this one tight pass the
net setters up rejected by Franklin.Kerr had that passed tight to the net,
try to flip it up and overher shoulder. But waiting right there
at the net was Franklin. Yeah, she kind of tried. She got
(49:21):
pulled forward a little bit about tothe motion W logo and try to go
behind her head a little bit.Franklin did a great job. She positioned
herself right on this cetter, reachedacross the net as the cetter was going
to dump and got her, whichtech in powers it at more. Another
tight pass tipped over in the middleby Grandberry, popped up a couple of
times. Oh Joe delivers the freeball. Lady balls have it, middle
attack, got it. Grandberry goesright between a couple of Badgers defenders in
(49:45):
the back grow freezing the Wisconsin defenders. And it's eleven ten. You're starting
to see Tennessee run the middle ofa little bit more, a little more
quick offense. And even though youknow Wisconsin has Booth a real tall middle
blocker, you can go around orif that ball gets moved at all,
still a one on one. Therecomes cur Serve goes at Good's techn how
(50:06):
to play it off the top ofthe net set to the right side.
Robinson goes wide. No, I'mnot sure who's calling the touch, the
down official or the I didn't seethey both. The first was the up
official to call the touchdown official thenfollowed suit and we have a review.
Tennessee's coach went to the score tableto grab the challenge card and there was
(50:30):
no card sitting there, and shegoes, hey, I want a challenge,
and then somebody ran over there andput a challenge card up on the
table. So it's our first challengeof the match. And a reminder to
Badger fans while we have a momentthat we've got even more volleyball action here
at the field House coming up nextweek on September seventh and September eight.
That's a Thursday and Friday, asthe Badgers take on Arizona at seven pm
(50:54):
on the seventh and take on Miamiat seven pm on September eight. Tickets
still available. You can check outUW Badgers dot com. All right watching
this replay whether or not there wasa touch by Tennessee. That call was
a touch and a point to theBadgers. That's a we're looking at the
(51:14):
net camera right now, right infront of where the play happened, but
you can't tell because the ball isgoes inside the block. Yeah, it's
a little tough, but from thatview, doesn't look like the Tennessee middle
blocker got a hand on it.That would be interesting to see. And
I'm not sure again if the linejudge called out. I didn't see a
flag go up or the down official. I don't see any fingers moving.
(51:38):
But maybe, as we always say, no, they have a little more
fine tune video that they can see. I really enjoyed the replays we're actually
getting right now at the field houseon the video board. These are very
zoomed in and yeah, that's agood one. Now, yeah it's the
volleyball is just so it doesn't looklike a ball, looks like a cylinder
(51:59):
because it's so fast, you know, I mean the frame rate of the
cameras capturing it. So right now, the score stance Wisconsin twelve, Tennessee
ten. But that second referee isstill down at the scores table looking at
the replay. Tennessee challenging that therewas no touch touch called, and it
gave Wisconsin this two point lead toTennessee essentially trying to even the match in
(52:21):
the second set at eleven each, and they're done taking a look and we'll
have a call here. Shortly,Tennessee's midlo was reaching to her left to
close the block and thinking went insiderto their right. So again we didn't
from the view we're seeing, didn'tsee any touch. But and now we've
(52:46):
get the call who and the shotwas out. Tennessee wins the challenge,
no touch call reversed and we're noweven at eleven. The cameras keep getting
better each year, just higher definitionand we're able to see a little more
slow mode. Sometimes when you seeit on the Olympics, it's crazy to
(53:07):
see. It's like like frame byframe. Yeah, it's very clear when
a ball moves like you know, flicks the finger, just a tiny touch
cur serve to the right back.Dutch Teckens pass has Ashburn to the Backgrow
sets to Franklin. Underneath that onewas Torres in the left back. More
(53:28):
goes inside the badge of block.Franklin has the stop right side. Robins
advised to just trying to tip itoff the block in the net violation against
Tennessee gives Wisconsin the lead at twelveto eleven. Yeah, great set by
Ashburn. She had a run backwardsto the right side and run set it
and run through out to the poleand let Robinson take a swing. And
I think Robinson missed time and shewas actually on the way down, but
that made the blocker then has thetable a little longer and got her arms
(53:51):
in the net. There's O showserving to four Wisconsin backgrow it, love
it tight pass to the right. They set to the right. Fingle goes
down the line, pop stup onceand then O Joe runs out of room,
tries to pancake save it out ofbounce on the near side, drops
down to the court where even attwelve second set between Wisconsin and Tennessee.
Yeah, I think I'll just onthe right side. Just kind of took
(54:12):
him throw that down the sideline, trying to maybe aiming for the left hand
of the outside hit her, butrun straight down the line, so it
goes a goods tech in pass offto the right force the bumps at aspern.
Robinson has to adjust to get thekill, puts her hands in the
air like, okay, I'll takeit. But she didn't have a lot
of power behind that, but shehad a great shot placement right there to
(54:36):
make at thirteen twelve. Yeah,King for Tennessee was in the middle back
and the center was on the rightback and the center they both went for
it, and generally you want themiddle back taking it so the center can
set the next ball. And theyboth hesitated. It was right in the
scene between them and then they bothbacked off. Hamill serving from the right
back for the Badgers Tennessee waiting thisone. Were stacked on right on stack
(54:58):
to the right on serve receive. Here's cur setting to the right side.
That's Spingle's go inside the block, out of block touch Hammle right there to
scoop it up left side. Franklinpowers and off the blocker's hands as it
sails and flops down near the endline Point Wisconsin, fourteen to twelve Sarah
Franklin up to twelve kills off twentyswings with no errors. Yeah, that's
a great tool shot. She justwent high and deep and generally her shots
(55:21):
will go over the block and inon the end line, or if the
block gets in the way, toolit off the top of the hands and
then out of bounds, which iswhat it did. Here's Hamil again Wisconsin,
midway through the second up by two. The Badgers won the opening set.
Here today gearly and overpass. Tennesseebrings it back though on the tight
(55:43):
pass to the net and Grandberry pokesit down. Yeah. Great, saved
by cur there. It was practicallyacross the net and she brought it back
and then to the middle blocker andmiddle blocker kind of threw it to the
left corner. It's too bad theBadgers couldn't get a hand on that.
It would have been a back rowattack. Tour Is with the float serve
at Goots Tech and on the runHamble with the bumps at Franklin chumps up
(56:04):
highto the air for the ten footline, sends a shot that's Doug middle
attack Baker stop by Smrek. Smrekrejects it right back at six five for
Tennessee versus six foot nine for Wisconsinand the Badger's lead by two. Yeah,
I love it. The left sidefor Tennessee played that ball pretty much
our free ball shoes at the fivefoot line on the left side and but
she'd passed it too tight for thecenters. Center had to go up,
Curry to go up for one handtricks trying to save it. Then she
(56:27):
set it too tight, easy blockfor the Badgers. Seventh block of the
set for Wisconsin as a team,Franklin goes left sideline Kerr after a great
pass, sets to the back row. More swings into the net, didn't
clear the net on the back rowattack, and Wisconsin leads it by three.
In the second the airs are endingup for Tennessee. Eight kills eight
(56:49):
years in this set. That hurtstime out Tennessee. Yeah, that Badger's
block has seven of them in theset at Wisconsin has a three point lead.
Passed the midway point of set numbertwo at sixteen thirteen Wisconsin. Here
in this set, we'll take abreak, come back with more after this.
You're listening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball persentedby Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle to
(57:09):
Madison for ninety years, sixteen tothirteen. The top frank Badgers le twenty
fourth rank Tennessee. I'm John Odious, He's Pete Way. You talked about
(57:31):
Tennessee's struggles offensively they've updated the stats. Eight kills, nine swings a O
forty attack percentage for a Tennessee teamthat came in five and oh and was
hitting three forty one. As eightteam volunteers go to the right sign shot
long by Fingo and she knew thatone got away from her. It kind
(57:52):
of maybe a little moment of frustrationthere as she was trying to tell herself
that's not the shot I wanted.Yeah, Franklin, tough serve, bad
pass, not a great set offthe net behind the hitter's head, and
she sailed it, just trying tostay aggressive and find the block. And
now she's getting subbed out just tomaybe give her a look from the sideline.
Rest up a little bit and CadenceBooth replaces there. So Fingle Pete
(58:13):
leaves seven kills, seven errors. She's there, dominating right side player.
Nice high pass finds curve Tennessee middleattack beaker Crawford rejects it. There's a
jous pushed back again by CC.Now the left side shot goes out of
bounds by love It and with Scottsonhas some breathing room. Now in the
(58:34):
second set, it's eighteen thirteen.Well I love. It's a little stressed
out there. She's got i thinkthree kills five errors now and she's got
some wreck on the right side antenna, so she's probably not going to try
that shot again. And she wenttry to go cross court and went wide
along along with it. So itwas a one point with Scots and lead
at fourteen to thirteen. After Tennesseegot a kill in the middle, and
(59:00):
now it's a four nothing run untilthat's served by Franklin goes into the net.
Yeah, just just making a subhere. There's sometimes coaches do what
they can just to slow down thepace and the rhythm of another team.
And in that case, Franklin justmy little serving at tiny bit low and
in the net. So it's nowa four point lead rather for Wisconsin.
(59:23):
After that for nothing, run nSee gets one back and the Badger's trying
for two sets to none lead onthe Lady Valls. If they can get
a second set win here at thefield house. Here's the serve to oshoe.
(59:45):
Wisconsin will set it up back rowattack. That's Franklin goes high up
and over and out point with Scotsonand Franklin's up to thirteen kills. It's
such a nice option for Franklin comingout of the back row, and she
doesn't come sure lyad outs down center. She comes a little bit more to
the right five six feet in onthe court, so that gives her a
(01:00:06):
right side shot, which she didwrist away to the left back corner of
Tennessee. Franklin only has four killsthis set instead of nine like the first.
Serve goes along by Wisconsin. Yeah, being a little humorous there because
she had nine kills, but overallman thirteen kills, twenty two attack attempts,
no hitting errors. Well, thatmeans Badger's spreading it out a little
(01:00:27):
bit more. She took a ballkof the swings the first set, and
now they're spreading it out and gigmore people involve. Serv goes at Franklin
again high up on her platform,Osio right there to back her up to
tiny Thomas Lara cross scorn on theleft side, stop by Torres left side.
I tip over the block by More. It's near the net played by
Osha. But did she run intothe net. No, it was actually
as she tried to bump set theball. I think her fist kind of
(01:00:51):
caught the bottom tape. It wasreally tight to the net, doing all
she could and try to just playthat as delicately as she could without touching
the net, but also being preparedif it deflects off the net. That's
a tough position to be in nineteensixteen three point Wisconsin lead late in the
set number two. Reminder, myintermission interview with Joslyn Boyer comes your way
(01:01:15):
after this, and the serve goesinto the net, and we might have
a surprise guest or two on thebroadcast as well. Waiting to confirm that,
but we will hear from Joslyn Boyerand my intermission interview coming up after
this set. Twenty to sixteen. Now, after a service error by Lovett,
(01:01:37):
Tennessee hitting negative one h three inthis set, a big blocking,
huge blocking for Wisconsin. Kurt doesn'tmove and sets to the back right,
huge shot fingle near the net, dunked down in the middle by Tennessee.
That was Paul like the six middleblocker who took care of that. Twenty
(01:01:58):
to seventeen, the Badger's lead bythree. Yeah, she was smart on
that. She didn't try to swingat it. She just kind of didn't
sweep inside to side, but justwent straight down like you said, kind
of dunked it down. Sidney Janesfrom Northfield of Minnesota is a freshman,
a finalist for Minnesota's Missive volleyball lastyear. Now she'll come in to be
(01:02:19):
the serving specialist for the Lady Vallsfires. Didn't it frankly left side?
Temmy yep Thomas E. Lara withthe fastball right off Jeans for the kill
twenty one seventeen. Yeah, there'stimes that she swings it seems like there's
no block there, even though there'sa big double block. She just finds
way to get it around him.Are over the top, but it's always
(01:02:44):
powerful and I'm deep and tough todig. So here comes Goods Tech behind
the line. Lefty goes deep backrow Tennessee to the left side. They
(01:03:07):
set more, got it off theblock. Tennessee's hanging around late second set,
Wisconsin leads by three. Yeah, nice swing, she's a good athlete.
Fast arm, banged up Robinson's handsand out out of bounce towards the
bench. That time Serve goes aGoods Tech in handles it. Nice high
(01:03:30):
pass to Asburn right side. Here'sRobinson up and over the block, sliding
in with the staff is Tennessee tippedout in the middle of the lady walls.
Wisconsin scoops it up again for Eklandturns on one crossbody down the line.
Here comes Tennessee after the tig leftside more tools shot. Yes,
but that Padger block was just inchesaway from bringing this place to its feet.
(01:03:50):
Yea, I have a good jobby more, you know, going
off the edge of Robinson's block. They're on the right. Well, actually
it kind of hit the seamen between, so I might have gone off or
booth and then but she was reachingout, so it's sent it out of
bounds time out by the Badger's latesecond set with Wisconsin up one set to
none. In this match, it'sWisconsin twenty one, Tennessee nineteen. I
mentioned the last time, Pete. It's been forty one years, nine months,
(01:04:13):
and twenty seven days since these twoprograms have met. So it's kind
of interesting because you know, Tennessee'sa big brand, a big name.
You hear of Tennessee a lot,and uh picked a finish like you mentioned,
I think early in the broadcast, third in the SEC. But forty
one years between matchups and the program. That's the long time. Was that
game New Troller at Tennessee or atWisconsin because I was a Wisconsin back in
that day eighty one that would havebeen played at the Madatorium. So this
(01:04:39):
was in Calambaso, Michigan. Ohso at a tournament. Yeah. The
only time they've ever faced Tennessee wasin Kalambazoo in eighty twice on the same
day and then in eighty one.Interesting. Yeah, yeah, I mean
the Madatorium is not on campus anymore, is now torn down and the new
rec center here on campus. That'swhere the Badger volleyball team used to play
(01:05:00):
way back in the day. Whenwas the first field house snatches? Do
you know that? Off? Agood question, good question if anybody does,
late eighties, because Steve Lowe ishere. Okay, well maybe we
did my math in my head andwhere people were I'm gonna say week.
It might have been soon after that, maybe even like eighty eighty five,
(01:05:27):
eighty forty five here in the fieldhouse. I wonder if it says it
in the brand new record book wehad Hello might have gotten here in eighty
six. Mmm, doesn't say wherethe whole matches were plated that's a question
for Diane all Right twenty one nineteento score the Scots and coming back after
(01:05:48):
the time out, passing three inthe back row, left back, Franklin
in the middle, it's Ojo,right back, it's Gig. Tennessee's rights.
Your freshman set occur jump floats itright at Ojo, pops it pass
up front as a good one.Booth attacks in the middle and it's stopped
by the Tennessee defense. Fingle rightside, Ashburn right there, both set
to the near side defense. Franklininside cut shot stopped by more the right
(01:06:12):
side. Fingle attacked, and thenit was Goods tech In trying to get
the dig diving to a right playit off the net, but it falls
straight down. Tennessee trails by justone. Tennessee is not going away.
They're playing some great defense, makingsome great digs and some big swings here,
putting some pressure on the Badgers.Twenty one twenty score Gadger pastors again
(01:06:42):
waiting for curs Serve Wisconsin hitting twoforty in the set, Tennessee hitting over
fifty six, but it's just aone point difference. This one fired in
a Goods Tech in Ashburn waits forthe past right side of Robins and down
the line popped up by Tours withthe left hand. Now a free ball
coming to Wisconsin. GG calls forit, gives it up front to Aspbourn,
(01:07:03):
quick set middle booth pounced it offthe top of the block, see
bendline like you know, the topof the net. A one hand setup
will be whistled and a left calledagainst Tennessee twenty two to twenty, and
now the Badger's lead by just two. Yeah, Tours. The Tennessee Lebera
made a great left handed, onehanded dig on the left sideline. But
this last one when the Badgers tooka swing out of the middle, when
(01:07:24):
hide deep center court and Tennessee triedto bring it back center corporate was just
too fast. It just went straightto the tape. Center tried to get
there, but she was coming fromthe back row. She lifted it,
got a call for the Badgers. Here's Oshell going to the back row.
Or it's off the scoreboard and pickedup by love it. Now More's gonna
send an open hand roll shot rightat oh Joe left side. Here comes
(01:07:45):
Franklin inside cutshot. It was offspeed right there's more farside. Fingle goes
inside the block and goes cross courtfor the kill for Tennessee twenty two to
twenty one. It's a close onelate in the second now and till that's
the second ball in this match that'sgone off for the scoreboarder and both teams.
That's into him once. But theplayers are so alert, you know,
it won't always go to the playerwho expected to be playing the ball,
but another player will be ready toplay it again. So that's a
(01:08:09):
lot of hard hitting, good digs, high bigs, but players being really
alert. Serve goes off the topof the tape, Gg fields it to
the right side. Robinson tries tocut it inside and it's out hitting error
by Devin, and just like that, the Badgers and Lady Balls are tied
at twenty two time out Wisconsin.Robinson's been doing well. That was just
(01:08:30):
another hard cross court shot, onea little bit wide. Yeah, that's
just her first. There's the secondsecond error. Seven kills, two errors
also in the front row with hersFranklin and she's got thirteen kills no air.
So I'm I'm guessing if they canthey're gonna feed Franklin on this next
one, But they haven't gone tothe middle too much, that's for sure.
It's gonna be. It's been mostlyright side outside and so Wisconsin nine
(01:08:53):
kills, four errors in the set, Tennessee fourteen kills, eleven errors,
so they're more kills in Wisconsin, more errors obviously as well. The Badgers
have seven blocks in the set.Tennessee has one in the set, so
the Badgers lead there as well. What's kind of allowed Tennessee a couple of
(01:09:14):
aces in your opinion, what's thebiggest reason why why we're even at twenty
two and a lot of the statsfavor of the Badgers. Well, at
one point I said Tennessee was hittingnegative. Now they're just barely positive point
zero seven nine but fourteen kills elevenairs, so they're in the last half
of this set. They've been makingmore swings for kills, better defense,
keeping the ball, and played toscrapping a little bit more. Badgers made
(01:09:39):
a couple of airs just like Robinson'sat the end there didn't make Tennessee play
the ball. She avoided the blockand just probably tried to graze the inside
of the block but missed it andwent out of bounds. Twenty two to
twenty two is your score. Asthe Badgers are back out onto the court
ready to go, Tennessee now breakingits team huddle, it says number one
(01:10:00):
versus number twenty four. The Badgersalready three and oh against the top twenty
five this season. They're four andoh this year, So a lot of
quality tests so far. One thingwith the Badgers here, Carolin Crawford's in
the front or when she has notbeen set yet tonight, she has no
attempts, no kills, and she'sin the front row with Robinson and Franklin
(01:10:20):
here. But the Tennessee middle blockersdon't have to stay on her very long
because they know they can go rightor left a little sooner because she hasn't
been sent so who knows, maybethey'll go to her. Here comes the
surf. It goes a goods techand pass off to the ride Ojo with
the bumps at left side. Frankwith a hard smash show overpass their CC
getting her first kill off the overpass. Well, they didn't set it to
(01:10:41):
her, but she got one rightin the middle. Yep. She's just
patience. She works hard blocking. She'll take a swing when she can in
this time it wasn't from her owncenter, but the opponent hard hit ball
that was dug over the net.She took it and made even with the
blocker against her, cut it tothe left and got the score big shot
there to give the Badgers a onepoint eat at twenty three twenty two side
out to Wisconsin and IMJ steps behindthe line, two points away from a
(01:11:10):
two oh lead, Number one rankedWisconsin home opener here today in Madison at
the field House. Here's Hamil goingcross court to the right back, right
side attack fingal. There's the digby Hamile gg with the bumps at Franklin
one up and clambers one down theline. A crunching kill by Franklin and
it's set point. Hamil meant agreat dig from the right back, just
(01:11:32):
sliding forward, popping it up theright side cross courts shot by the left.
It was kind of a hybrid heatseeker. It just was not spinning
normally and she's still popped it upnicely for the Badger to get a swing
on the outside by Franklin for thekiller. And that's her tenth dig of
the match, number ten for Hamiltwenty four to twenty two. She leads
(01:11:54):
all players in digs today. Setpoint Fans on their feet at the field
house, going back row, passup front to Kurr. Tennessee attacks right.
That's Fingle got the block, toutsSmereck with the cover. Left side.
Here's Franklin little off speed job andit's saved. Ker directing traffic bump
set left side, love it pigblock by Bucky, but it's covered,
(01:12:15):
you know. Here's love it again. Chouse pushed over by Tennessee. On
set point we play on. Franklincuts it. Tourist slides in with the
dig. Here's the right side attack. That's a big shot by Fingle.
Right there, it's Hamile. That'sher eleventh pig. Franklin lines up and
got rejected on set point twenty four, twenty three. Set point number two.
Upcoming now for the Cardinal and White. That was a tough set for
(01:12:38):
Franklin, coming over her right shoulderfrom the back row. Goochlicking had a
bump set it because Hamil dug it. So just a tough one and she's
still tried to go sharper inside itjust caught it on her own side of
the net. Set point number twotours with the serve left right. Wisconsin
attacks a middle smack, flips itup and down, goes up in the
middle of the nat just kind oftaps it over her head, over her
(01:12:59):
shoulder a little bit, and it'stwenty five twenty three, a two sets
and one lead now for the numberone ranked Badgers. That's always a good
option when a good good passes.Throw it up to the six nine player
with a high rage and she justkind of, like you said, just
kind of threw it down with oneham didn't tried to take a big swing,
but got to kill five kills fromFranklin and the set seven blocks as
a team for Wisconsin, and theBadgers hang on twenty five to twenty three
(01:13:26):
over Tennessee. All right, comingup at our intermission, we'll hear from
Wisconsin's Joscelyn Bowyer. That comes yourway in sixty seconds and you are listening
to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman'sJewelers, providing spark for the Madison for
ninety years. Welcome back at thebreak. Wisconsin leads Tennessee to sets down
twenty five sixteen in the first, twenty five twenty three in the second,
(01:13:48):
except for our intermission interview and beforetoday's match, I was able to talk
with Wisconsin's Jocelyn Boyer. The Badgerswere at the Big Ten Football season open
or yesterday I win by Wisconsin footballover Buffalo, and I asked Joscelyn what
it was like to celebrate with theBig Ten trophy and enjoy the day yesterday
at the football game. That wasawesome. I mean, just feeling the
(01:14:10):
energy from the crowd and being ableto go out there and you know,
just feel the love from all thevagination was cool. Now we're recording this
before the unofficial or before the officialchampionship banner drop here at the field House.
So as a player, do youguys, like how does how do
players treat those moments? Do youguys try to soak it all in but
still be focused? Like what's thebalance there? Yeah? I mean that's
(01:14:32):
kind of more for the fans andfor you know, everyone here in the
stadium. We like to think thatwe already celebrated it last year and kind
of took in that moment. Sowe're just looking forward to Tennessee. Talking
with Jocelyn Boyer here at the break, I thought it was I thought you
came in and you played really wellagainst Arkansas when when you were called upon,
(01:14:53):
And I guess my question is whatis that like for someone like in
your position where you have to beactive and ready. You don't know when
that's going to happen, but whenyou come in, you have a I
don't want to say a lot ofpressure, but you expect to perform,
right, I mean, that's it. It's really just go in and do
the job you're asked to do andbe able to execute what you've trained for
and to trust your training rapid firetime you're ready. Rapid fire questions.
(01:15:14):
What do you love most about volleyballwinning? What is your favorite movie?
Comedy style? Oh? My favoritecomedy movie. Yeah, I know,
I asked that horribly. I don'tknow why elf favorite action movie? Favorite,
Fast Furious? Okay, very good? Favorite major League baseball team,
(01:15:36):
oh, White Sox. And whyWell, my dad has worked there for
a very like pretty much my entirelife. So I've grew up going to
games and still like to go whenI get to go home. Thanks,
Jocelyn. Welcome. All right, that's Joslyn Boyer at the break Back with
more after this. You're listening toWisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewlers,
providing Sparkle to Madison for ninety yearsand back at the field House, John
(01:16:04):
Audience and Pete wait with you.The Badgers lead Tennessee two sets to one,
twenty five, sixteen, twenty five, twenty three overall. In this
one, Wisconsin has a three sixtynine hitting percentage. Tennessee is hitting one
to fourteen. Sarah Franklin had fivekills in the second set fourteen in the
match with one hitting error. MorganFingle leads the way for Tennessee nine kills,
(01:16:25):
but she does has seven errors. Now joined up in the broadcast booth
by a couple of former Wisconsin BadgersDanielle Hart and Chanelle bram Shriver. You
guys were part of the big tenbanner drop earlier before the match. What
was that like, Danielle, Oh, it's really fun. We got to
stand up in at the upper deckand be the ones to pull the banner
cord and so that was really anhonor. And it's really cool to be
(01:16:46):
back here with Channel and just backin the field house again. Feels so
good. Back to the action realquick. Here's a shot on the left
side by Moore, cross court tothe far side corner for the kill one
nothing start for Tennessee. What wasthat like for you, Chanelle to be
able to share that moment with heart? I mean in the field has is
one of a kind of to getto do that with Danielle and in front
of the most amazing fans. Itwas something super special and not that everybody
(01:17:08):
gets to do that, you know, so if you gotta take advantage of
it and enjoy every moment. Here'sthe serve right to left Ojo service set
Booth gets the middle attack and getsit down to the near sideline. One
one Wisconsin and Tennessee. What areyour impressions so far of the team this
year, Because obviously you lose alot of talent with both of you no
longer on the team, and theyhave to replace it, and they definitely
(01:17:30):
have brought in some talent as well, and it's really cool to just see
how the pieces are going to cometogether this season and I'm really excited to
watch how that plays out. Youcan see right away just the offense we
have, the attackers and what wecan do out there in the front row.
I think is just incredible, andI mean the block. When you
look at someone like Carter and AnnaSmack blocking together, that's insane. I
(01:17:51):
don't know that there's any blocks inthe world that look like that, and
so it's really exciting stuff. It'scrazy. Six nine sixty seven. There's
a kill by Devin Robbins and onthe right side, Good's tecking behind the
line two on. Speaking of Gigi, she's had a couple of starts or
a couple of starts at Lebero. She's played DS a little bit too channel.
What's that like for players like Gigand even now Julia Oijo who's wearing
(01:18:12):
the Libero jersey to try to getinto that rhythm. Here's a right side
attack by Fingle. I'll let youanswer that in a second. Here's Robinson
on the right stop by Tennessee, but the block goes out. It's a
kill for Wisconsin and the Badgers. On top of the Lady falls three one.
What's that like for those two playerstrying to battle at that position?
You know, I think the depththat they have on this team and any
(01:18:32):
DS that would come in and fillin that role. Everybody is super steady
and mentally strong, so I thinkthat Kelly does a great job in stilling
confidence and everybody and playing whatever rolethat is. And I trust both of
them to get it done. Andwhether they're left back, middle back in
the red or white, so Ithink that they're they're handling it well and
then getting along great Grandberry gets amiddle attack for Tennessee. It's a three
(01:18:55):
two Badgers lead here third set.Number one ranked Wisconsin is trying for the
sweep. But so we talk aboutall this talent. We talk about how
they, you know, keep bringingin talent to this program. There's got
to be a certain luxury for thisteam to be able to change the lineup
when necessary, to put different playersin a different spots. Here's Franklin on
(01:19:15):
the left, and she got rejectedby Tennessee. It's a lady Ball's block.
But that depth of talent has tobe very valuable. In what ways
is that valuable for a team?Oh? Absolutely. I mean you never
know what can happen to anybody outthere, but like if someone's having off
night or there's injuries or whatever. But also just the practice gym in general
and what you're able to consistently trainwith. It really does take everybody giving
(01:19:41):
full effort all the time. Andthe more talent you have on a team,
the better that team can again trainjust in practice, and the higher
the level goes altogether. Ser've hadWisconsin out a system downball sent over by
Franklin's shot on the right by Tennessee. Wisconsin retrieves right side Robinson stopped and
blocked by Tennessee. So they're startingto get a couple of blocks here in
this third set, four three ladyvalls lead the Badgers and a time out
(01:20:06):
taken by Wisconsin. Well, I'msure you guys had a lot of fun.
Go have some more fun here andhopefully, you know, we'll get
a three set victory here today. Thanks for the time, all right,
that's Dan yell Hart and Chanelle Bramstreiberjoining us here in the broadcast booth.
Time out by Wisconsin. Four threelady balls back after this. You're listening
(01:20:26):
to Wisconsin Badger of Volleyball, presentedby Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle to Madison
for ninety years. Welcome back tothe field house, John Audios in Pete
(01:20:49):
wait with you as the Badgers leadTennessee in the match two sets and on
Lady Valls lead though in the setfor three after the time out, Booth
gets a shot rejected and popped up. Here comes Wisconsin. Franklin waits and
sets it over free ball to theLady Balls right side attack Bengal shot at
Ojoe dies to a left, hasthe dig back to Franklin on the left,
(01:21:10):
goes off the blockers hands, nogoes off the net point Tennessee.
I thought, baby, she gotit off the hands of the Tennessee block
almost a great back set by Guschikin, kind of over the shoulder, over
their backs side of Franklin. Soit's amazing she even got it up to
the tape. And like you said, we thought I'd hit the forums of
the blockers, but it was justall tape at the top five three Tennessee
(01:21:33):
third set serve long service error bythe Lady Wolves gives Wisconsin a free point.
Tennessee hasn't done that much, ifat all today. That's just their
second service error. Yeah, andthey came out in this third set and
kind of figured out they're blocking andchanged a few things. I think they
were taking a little more cross courton. Franklin got a block there and
(01:21:54):
the right side and Robinson got ablock. There got a little lead here.
Toris on sir received high passing inmiddle shot by Granberry, oh Point,
Wisconsin. Brandberry had been doing wellfive kills now two airs, and
she had a spot in the middlewhere she had a swing at it but
(01:22:15):
just went along Oh Jell jump throatsit and sails it deep. That one
got away from it. It isa fine line between, you know,
ultra aggressive and that thing just takesoff, and it's so super fine line.
You know, you don't want tobe tough enough where it's not easier
for the opponent, but sometimes theycan sail. There's Torres, the liberal
(01:22:38):
for Tennessee. Oh Jell pass offto the right, brought back in play
by Asburn, but with Scotts andnot able to get it back over on
the third try. Tennessee will makeit seven five. I believe that there'll
be an ace for Torres. Tennesseehas not been phased by being down the
first two sets. They're loose onthe bench, nothing loose here, good
(01:22:58):
environment, they're playing well. Servegoes at oh Jell pass up front near
the net to asper left side.Franklin and Franklin gets number fifteen as she
pushes it for the kill seven six, the Badger's trail by one. Yeah,
she did a good job. Eventhough there was a tight sad she
was able to tuol it off thetop of the block, and being six
four that helps because you're swinging downat the block a little bit. Just
(01:23:19):
she always swings so high and deepunless she's going extremely sharp cross court.
But she's got that deep shot too. Here's Hamil on a seven six Tennessee
lead and the third Hamil it's Taurus. Her sets in the middle. Beaker
gets stopped with Scots and wall withanother block. Well, the center got
(01:23:43):
pushed far to the right side andthe Beaker head a follower within five six
feet of the sideline. So Ithink the center just didn't push it forward
enough because Beaker couldn't quite get toher. I'm going to give an attack
error to Beaker, but I don'tsee a block recorded. Here is Tennessee
past to Kurr middle. That's Peakerand that's a kill. Rattles off the
(01:24:05):
block of Caroline Crawford who was meetingher at the net right in the middle.
Yeah, they're trying to get theirmiddle the ball a little bit more,
but the stove for Beaker. That'sjust three kills, two airs,
and six in the seven attempts hereFingle to serf eight, seven in of
(01:24:29):
the net. So now Tennessee hasgiven him a couple of freebies in this
set and we're tied at eight. You know. Good for Beaker though she
was the one that got subject inthe first set and has stayed in the
whole time, so their coaches showingsome confidence in her to stay in there
when she did not start the match. Franklin fighters it in on the serf.
(01:24:55):
Tennessee will set to the back. That's Fingle going up and over the
block, flying in from the backrow and tapping it down to the Badger's
ten foot line. Yeah, andthat's hard. Smreck from the right front
tried to go to the middle courtten foot line to pick that one up,
but she just couldn't get over theresoon enough to get it. Tennessee
nine Wisconsin eight. Badgers won thefirst set very convincingly. Twenty five sixteen
(01:25:17):
got by with the twenty five twentythree win in the second seven blocks in
that second set for Wisconsin, therecomes Tennessee right to left goes at ojo
back row, Hamill sets to theleft pawn and Tammy terminates on the left
(01:25:39):
floor of Wisconsin nine nine. It'snice when you can have a second team
All American come in and in thethird set and just fly in and get
what is her? What is thatjust her fourth kill? I believe.
Yeah. Yeah, her number iscompared to the last four years at Northwestern
will be way down. But it'sbecause there's so many more talented players around
her here and she's asked so muchless. Yeah, here's the left side
(01:26:01):
more attack right off Crawford who wasserving for Wisconsin on the back row.
Tennessee ten Wisconsin nine again Tennessee. When they passed, well, they fake
are quick in the middle and thenBoots get stuck there. Just hesitates a
little bit because she's got to stayfor the middle blocker. But they're throwing
it to the outside and there's alittle gap out there, and even though
Smarck's out there and she's tall, there's still enough space to get a swing
(01:26:21):
around her. There comes to jumpfloat at Franklin pass to the left.
It's an ace that's Sydney Jeans withthe ace. Tennessee seems to be serving
a little tough with the Badgers. They're struggling with in service. Eave here
a little more of this set,and it's trying to get behind the number
(01:26:46):
one ranked team of the country andthe home opener. The field house getting
loud. Franklin nails the past toham All right side struck. Oh did
she get the touch? Snow, that was what the crowd was waiting for.
Is a great pass and Spret justcouldn't connect. Yeah, she had
the open shot down the line. She just over the top. Yeah,
(01:27:11):
how did her finger get flicked? It's close, no challenge Hamil another great
pass. Booth then goes crossbody andit's gonna rattle around and fall twelve ten.
Now the Badgers git the side outdown by two. The Badgers are
getting Booths a little more involved, get their middle going in the third set
here, and that's just open upthings for the right and left side scots
(01:27:41):
and six skills and four errors inthe set. Five kills, two hitting
errors for Tennessee. Now the ladyvaults say hold on, gen Asia Moore
and the left backs is hold on, let's wipe it up near that B
and the big ten logo must beto sweat bee. This is like time
they'd better wife right there. Yes, it's a swoop be here's Ashburn going
(01:28:03):
to the left back back row, tipping and right into the block getting rejected
his fingle. She flew in fromthe back row and try to go aspy,
but that big Badger block was waiting. Yeah again coming from the back
row. It was actually really atight set and she just was on the
way down when she got there andjust tried to tip it off the edge
(01:28:24):
of the block. But well,I learned, did a nice job bringing
her back in. Yeah, Iwas tammy getting her fingers on it.
Ninth block for Wisconsin service error bythe Badgers. So Tennessee on top by
two points. Midway through set numberthree, it's thirteen to eleven, Lady
Valls, Tennessee. That's cur thesetter sliding in service franklint. But the
(01:28:55):
passes off to the right, tightbump set near the net booth with two
hands, shoves it deep, DougTennessee, tip middle popped up booth,
pops it up. It's near thenet. Tennessee has it again inside the
ten foot line to the far sideand just banging it in for the kill.
His fingle down the line. Itdoesn't look like the Badgers as well
change him his mind. I thoughtit might have been out, but how
(01:29:16):
he's well, I thought that lookedin. Let's take a look. They're
gonna show us Elsa's yeah, that'sback it up a little bit much.
Oh, I think it was in, but Kelly Sheffield does, but he
takes some time to talk to theofficials. Slow things down. Yeah,
without challenging. Does want to sayone thing. Let's see. Oh,
(01:29:39):
they showed it again a close upand I didn't get a good look at
it. I like these firsts firstof you that showed looked in, but
no challenge O show got aced.It looked like there was some miscommunication in
the back court between Franklin and Oshow, who were standing right next to each
other, and the ace falls offthe arms of Oshow from its Tennessee setter.
(01:30:00):
It was also a great serve goingto the end line over their shoulders.
That's a really hard one for themto decide who takes it, much
less if one decides. Steven geta good pass out of it. Four
point Tennessee lead ashburn sends it tothe left hand. There's barely any block
there for Temmy Thomas and it's poppedup in the back row. Fingle into
the block, stopped back to Tennessee. More. Tristan near Sun hits off
(01:30:20):
the block, diving saved by Timmyin the ten foot line, right side
Robins and rejected Temmy right there again. Bump set Thomas. I yes,
got it off the block. It'sTimmy time at the fieldhouse. Yeah.
Temmy made three great plays in thatone rally. Two were defensive plays.
One was a rocket off the block, she popped it back up, one
(01:30:43):
was a dig and then the lastswing against the double block, sharp inside
cross court. She was working duringthat rally and that's a big point for
Wisconsin, and that's when she'll beat her best because that's what she's used
to, that fast paced I'm gettingthe ball. I'm getting the ball.
And then she stubbed up because she'sback rown. Now three point deficit for
the batchers. Shove over free ballto Wisconsin. Ashburn sets to the right
(01:31:04):
side, Robinson down the line andit's a step into Livers two point Tennessee
lead. Will they take a timeout because it seems like Wisconsin starting to
make their push. Yeah, niceswinging, nice set to the right side
and Robinson high deep middle blocker gotheld but still to the corner within six
(01:31:24):
inches. And what it turned.I keep going back to Temmy's little sequence
of events there because that's on theverge of going Tennessee, going up by
five, and now you get thatpoint, you get another one, and
it's just a two point difference inthe set. Middle attack good drops down
for Grandberry, So now it's backup to three Tennessee sixteen Wisconsin thirteen.
(01:31:48):
Third set towards the Tennessee. Leberropassed that one really well. Grushakin served
a good ball, but she passedher right on target. They were able
to run the middle of kind ofa thirty one swat a town between those
badger offenders lady balls, it's AshlynKing the junior ds goes a good tech
(01:32:12):
and steers it up front. Middleattack Booth goes off the set of kur
chased down near the end line Tennesseenow near the nets, and it's gonna
rattle off the block. Good forlove it got it right down straight off
the badger's block. But for loveit, that's her fourth kill to go
along with five hitting errors. Yeah, it's hard to tell. It looked
like going down Robinson's front because shewas right there waiting for it. I
don't know if she was pressed andalready pulling her arms back and on the
(01:32:33):
way down and it just snuck inthere though. The Tennessee once again up
by four. Match is their largestlead. Make it out five at was
in. I think that's an ace. It's called out. She's gonna challenge
because otherwise I think that, Yeah, she'll slow things down. I thought
(01:32:55):
it was out. Okay, herewe go real time. Look, then
we're gonna have a review. Tennesseealready won its first review of the match,
now using a second challenge here thisafternoon. That was called out,
and we're gonna take a look atit. And just in real time,
(01:33:15):
it looked like an ace to me. But my eyesight isn't the best.
I'm about as old as the differencein time between matches in Wisconsin and Tennessee.
Older than that, or you arere born seventy nine, so I
was two when they last played.Besides, today's watched this view? Does
(01:33:39):
the ball? Oh the camera?Conveniently they have another angle of the than
that one convenient. I don't thinkwe've ever seen that view and a replay.
No, that's just like a sidelinesitting on the floor camera. It's
hard to tell. Here's a betterview. Oh even the oh two of
the views and the ball can veniantlyleft out of the frame home video work.
(01:34:04):
Yeah, so okay, I don't. I don't from just those two.
Depending on what else they have thatthey don't have enough to overall that
those are the only two views theyhave, then it's gonna stay over Yeah,
they must have a different view, because I've never even been seen in
the years of video review that floorcamera used. Right, They'll have a
(01:34:29):
couple of other angles I'm assuming tolook at, But as of right now,
it is a serve that went outcalled out seventeen fourteen Tennessee Tennessee trying
to get it to eighteen thirteen withthis challenge, you're just joining us number
(01:34:53):
one. Wisconsin won the first twentyfive sixteen and won the second by two
twenty five twenty three. And nowthe downf she has done. Taking a
look at the replay, the setterfor Tennessee UP talking to the UP official.
All this is all going on,we'd be interesting to see what the
Tennessee captain's setter is talking to theup official about on that play, or
(01:35:13):
if there's something else so they're stilltalking to this scores table. I don't
once again, I always try toread into what does that mean if they're
changing something. Perhaps they're changing thescore, like changing it's in. Yeah,
all it in. If they hadthe right angle, and Tennessee gets
the ace. So the challenge wasone for a second time by the Tennessee
(01:35:38):
Lady volunteers. They really never showedus any decent videos, so the official
must had a different camera angle. They were able to use three nothing run
by Tennessee, who's tech and servereceived to ask for on a decent past
lepside, Franklin bounces it off theblock and it's gonna fall. So Tennessee
(01:36:00):
led by five. It's down tofour and we'll see if Wisconsin can make
a move and try to end itin three sets this afternoon. So there's
the front line that has scored wellfor the Badgers, Franklin on the left
and Robinson on the rank getting themost sets. Franklin goes right between the
block of Tennessee on the outside.Four point deficit now for the University of
Wisconsin. This one gets off thetop of the tape on the serd biojah
(01:36:24):
all the way to the left side. Love it hesitates since a shot sprawling
save by Julia right side of Robinsongot it right off the high platform,
off the ds and the backgrow. That was King and Wisconsin tax on another
one. Stilson room to go downby three. I think there's always that
dug the ball, but Franklin,I'd go off the court to the almost
(01:36:44):
the Wisconsin logo on the on thefar side and back bump set it to
the right side. Great back bumpset all the way crosscourt and Robinson took
a nice swing for the kill.O show to the right back. Great
pass curse. That's the little Grandberrygot it. Grandberry set some success now
when they're able to get it toher. That's her seventh kill. Two
errors off twelve swings, and maybeTennessee's passing a bat a little bit better.
This sets because they're able to getin center middles or they're certainly focusing
(01:37:06):
on it more and it's working muchbetter it was at five. Wisconsin just
got it down to three trying toget it to two before Tennessee responds up.
They just got an asn o Joe. Now it's five again. Great
served. That one really dropped infront of Bogel. She sprawled out,
barely got her fist on it.Now the Lady Balls are five points away
from the third set win and thetime out taken by Kelly Sheffield in Wisconsin
(01:37:30):
in a set number three with theBadger's up two zip in the match,
it's Tennessee twenty Wisconsin fifteen. You'relistening to Wisconsin bag Tennessee has its largest
(01:37:55):
lead of the set. It's atfive Lady Balls twenty Badger's fifteen. John
Odious Pete wait with you from thefield house and the home opener. Wisconsin
up two sets to know and tryingto close it out in three. But
what needs to happen here down thestretch of this third set? What kind
of adjustments do you see Wisconsin needingto make to try to get out of
here in three? Well, first, they've got a task better. This
has been a struggle for them thisset. Not terrible passes, but they
(01:38:16):
have gotten used a couple of timesand they have not gotten the ball to
Crawford. They haven't said of thiswhole match. We're in the third set
and it's just been going out toFranklin who's doing great and Robinson on the
right who's also doing well, butit's just middle blockers. There we go,
there we go. Yeah, andthere's a good pass up to Ashburn
from O Show who had to godown lower to the floor to grab it.
And then the Badgers terminate in themiddle with Caroline Crawford. That's my
(01:38:41):
coach speak right there. I'm saying, if you can get out of the
ball, get the ball way onthe side of the whole match, they'll
be kicking out right or left toour other attackers. And it works.
Four point deficit four Wisconsin. Here'sHamill fires it into the left back pot
(01:39:02):
a system love it with a hightap. Hamil underneath it on the right
sideline bumps it to the left.Pindler's Franklin roll shop falls off the block
number seventeen for Franklin this afternoon. How they're open end roll shot by Franklin.
She's been banging the ball, butshe's had a couple of roll shots.
This one she actually teased off thetop of the block. Right side
(01:39:25):
blocker and then it kind of deflectedbehind the middle blocker who turned around and
didn't quite see it soon enough topop it up. It's a season high
and kills for Franklin, fifth straightmatch to start the Sea season, and
double figures for Sarah twenty to seventeen. He's up to seventeen kills today.
Here's Hamil. Wisconsin pulls too withinthree graces the top of the net,
(01:39:46):
good served, tight pass, middleattack, beaker off gg and it's down.
So once again, Wisconsin gets towithin three, trying to cut it
to two when Tennessee comes back witha point twenty one seventeen. Lady balls
ten See you going to the middleof Beaker. She has four kills,
two airs, no one, eightattempts, but they hadn't gone to her
much in the first two sets, and suddenly she's getting more and scoring one.
(01:40:11):
There's Fingle behind the service lines, serving from zone one right to left.
It goes off Gigisojo have enough forhim to track it down. She
does gig from the corner backwards, bump won't get to the net. Well.
Wisconsin gave it an effort there, but once again Tennessee back on top
by five. Yeah. They targetedGoochsgain in that time, and she shanked
it backwards and Ojo sprinted and reallymade it all the way to almost where
(01:40:35):
the wood ends and the concrete begins, but they couldn't get it back over
the net. And this one lookslike we might be headed to another set.
We'll see Franklin to Hamil to themiddle and Spreck with the tip and
it's saved and here comes Tennis Seethis communication in a free ball to Wisconsin.
Hamil, quick set middle sprint powersit through the defense for the kill.
(01:40:56):
Twenty two eighteen. We'll see ifwisconsinin once again try to cut into
this five point deficit. Yeah, bit of a mistake by Tennessee center.
I think she had a back rowattacker there she could throw too, but
I think the defensive specialist is inthere instead, and they just had a
bump set it over the net fora free ball for the Badgers. It
is now a four point lead forTennessee. Here's Franklin serves it to the
(01:41:17):
left back end deep, Tennessee playsit to the left side, wind up,
love it off the block. Yep, just tools the Badger block and
Tennessee back on top. By five, and we're late now in the third.
Yeah, I think she went tocross court on Crawford. Is she's
coming out. Crawford's reaching out ahands with pointing out of bounds and that's
where the ball deflect with. Tennesseeneeds two more to get us to a
fourth set today, number twenty fourin the country, five and ol.
(01:41:41):
Wisconsin comes in four and oh numberone ranked out assistant. The Badgers have
to bump set it to Crawford onthe right easy shot handled by Fingle on
the right back the left side, rattling through the block is more in a
net violation against Wisconsin. Badgers playedit and popped it up, kept it
off the ground. But now it'sset point Tennessee. And this is a
little bit communications between player again SammyThomas and Osho. At that time it
(01:42:02):
kind of went between them. Theyboth kind of reached for it went forward.
And this is early in the season. People are getting even know who's
ball is in each lane and who'sgonna take it. But sometimes it's a
seam, it's hard to tell.It comes to serve to Ojo two hands
shove up front to Hamil left side. Temmy he rejected in Tennessee. When's
the third a block to end itfor the lady balls twenty five to eighteen.
(01:42:29):
Tennessee was not gonna go home withoutgiving it a good shot, and
they served tougher and the Badger's pastpassers struggled. And now we're going to
fourth Tennessee twenty five Wisconsin eighteen. But the Badger's lead two sets to one
in this match, will play afourth set. Next. You're listening to
Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle to Madison for ninety years.
(01:43:06):
Home Open are here at the fieldHouse. I'm John Oddis joined by
Pete Waite, number one Wisconsin bellto twenty fourth rank Tennessee. There in
that third set twenty five eighteen, the ball's going a three oh run to
end it, and uh now it'stwo one in favor of Wisconsin. In
European that third set, Yeah,I know you mentioned the passing before.
Was that maybe the bigger, biggestdifference in that set as to why Tennessee
(01:43:29):
was able to win? Or whatelse? Did you? They're all they're
all connected. The Tennessee serves tougher, Wisconsin is not as good passing,
Wisconsin's offense isn't as good. Tennesseeis able to run their offense back at
them in Tennessee's offense is stronger. So it's all connected to that tougher serving
and poor passing than by the Badgersand Tennessee in that set twelve kills three
(01:43:49):
years for three sixty hitting percentage thebest they've done, oh by far better
than they've done all day. Andit's amazing how it can be. Connect
it to your serving. When youtake the other team out of their offense,
you get easier balls coming back atyou, or you're just collad out
getting points because you based them.Makes the Javalats you're less stress free,
(01:44:10):
less stressful. Yeah, So thatthree sixty attack percentage in that third set.
Earlier they had oz seventy in thesecond and hit one sixty seven in
the first. So, like yousaid, that's definitely helping them out in
that set to pick up their firstset victory. Here, I think we
got here. I'll take one.You can have those two pass passing stats.
(01:44:33):
The Badgers, who had seven blocksin the second set, record a
couple in that third set, butthat third set did have six ties and
two lead changes. But once Tennesseegot up, they led by five at
thirteen eighteen, they led at fifteento twenty, and then they go on
that three old run and just kindof sprint away from the Badgers at the
(01:44:55):
end to win it by seven.I mean, overall receptionaires on the match
so far, frankly two Gutchikin threeOrizo three and really looking at Tennessee as
a team, they have won receptioner. So even if Tennessee wasn't passing
great, they weren't getting aced andgetting receptionaiers. That's a big difference right
there. And it just seemed likea lot of them are in that third
(01:45:17):
set. I'll try to get youthat number six of the nine aces in
the third that's huge. Oh nicesave and this one has him out of
system. The Badgers a free balland it falls down off Tennessee. They
can't take care of the free ball. Guchikan shank. The pass over to
(01:45:39):
the poll by the down official isthe ashburn went over there and bump set
it back and you can't cross theline where the poll is, and she
that's what Tennessee's coaches, talking tothe official ball they things she went over.
That was close, but she savedit. Think Gouschikan bump sets it
over deep in the court, andmaybe the Tennessee players kind of gave up
a little bit and thought it wasa dead ball and she gotta kill.
(01:46:03):
Now what's Tennessee has the luxury ofdoing since they still have two challenges,
they're two and oh in challenges. They're going to use another one because they
still have two remaining. And that'swhat happens. When you win your previous
challenges. It makes it easier tomake a decision like this at the start
of a set because those My pointis those challenges are very valuable and usually
(01:46:23):
one nothing. Well, I don'tknow, maybe you don't really challenge something
like that. And years ago youcould not cross the center line extended past
the pole to the opposing team sideof the court. Then for a while
you could. You could chase itdown as far as you want, as
long as you brought it back outsideof the pole and then hit it back
over the court. Now they've goneback to you can't do that. Maybe
(01:46:45):
it was they considered a little dangerouswhen people were flying over there, the
scorer's table or the other bench butnow this one, I don't honestly even
know the rule. Like like herewe see a replay. Where's the ball?
Is it right on the mats?Oh? That should be good.
It seems like it's on the Badgerside of the net. But her fists
are on the plane in the net. So can the ball at all be
on the plane in the net?Is it just your feet can't cross this
(01:47:09):
imaginary line? And what is this? I think, yeah, I think
it's the ball. The ball can'tthe ball? So the ball right there?
If the ball is, that's awfullyclose, can't touch the plane in
the net. That might be touchingthe plane of the net. But they
say no tho. It's a veryquick decision. Badger ball call stands.
Tennessee loses its first challenge of thematch. They're two and one in challenges
(01:47:31):
one nothing Wisconsin and bottom line goodsdeck and gets her kill. That's a
lot going on for Badgers up onezero, it's right. Here's always your
serving. By the way, Juliais no longer the liberol gig is.
There's a shot who's tucking, cannotget the dig as it goes right by
her for the Tennessee kill. Oneto one. So there's another change by
(01:47:55):
Wisconsin. And that's, you know, the luxury of being able to have
all these different pieces as you canchange things up every once in a luxury
slash dilemma. I mean, youjust it's a tough decision by the coaching
staff to look at the stats andsee who's hitting well, who's passing well,
who's not who they're comfortable with.Side by side, it's tech and
serve receive throws. The pass upRobinson from the right side off the Aspurn
(01:48:16):
set assist Izzy finished by Robinson twoone and that case Goochs can perfect pass
right online. She was standing nextto Ojo in that serve receive pattern.
They've done it before, they didit all last year, very comfortable with
each other. Got the point.Great swing by Robinson on the right side.
And now maybe we'll see if thisBadger's serving game can pick it up.
(01:48:40):
Like Pete pointed out, six acesby Tennessee and the third they've got
nine in the match. Wisconsin hasone. It was from Franklin earlier.
Gig fires an in back roup.Well, there's an overpass, so there's
a good serve by Goods tech inWisconsin attacks on the right side, off
the top of the block. That'sRobinson saved back row Tennessee quickly on the
far side, pushed back by theBadger's defense. Back to the Lady Balls
left side, love it swings atit, hard goods teching underneath it.
(01:49:03):
A splint sets right side. Robinsonpinballed once twice and if we've all coming
back to Bucky, Wisconsin attacks middletipping Crawford pancakes save by Lady Balls.
That was Torrez the Libero pushed downthe forest sideline. Ojo tracks it down
Wisconsin at the left side. Franklingot it net violation Tennessee and it's a
(01:49:24):
point for Wisconsin. After a backand forth between the Badgers and the Lady
Balls. The other part of thatdecision with Gutchenkin going to Lebero Ojo to
the outside is how are the outsidesdoing for the Badgers and Timmy Thomas.
Alara had five kills tiers and fourteenattempts. She only hit one forty three,
so they kind of thought, well, Ojo can go up there and
hit have a little different tempo onit, and maybe they feel more comfortable
(01:49:45):
as a passing the unit out thereKerr left side love It blasts it down
the line for the kill the loveit. It's almost seems as if you
know, Tennessee has just needed acouple of sets to try to figure out
the adjustments they needed, and nowit's it's the Badgers, like you said,
trying to make their own adjustments withthose Joe and Gus Tech. And
that's why you play five sets, especially teams that are not in the same
conference. They don't know each other. It takes a while to adjust.
(01:50:06):
Overpass gg on Serve rec punched downlove it Tennessee and there's that good serving.
Still didn't get an ace, butthey ended up with the point and
we're tied at three. There's anotherpart of that whole decision. Now guchikins
on the court, not just threerotations. She's out there for six.
Because she's a liberal, she's goingto be serviceive all the time, so
there's a lot more pressure on herto pass well and consistently. And they
(01:50:29):
go right to Gutch Tech and popsa tight pass to aspirin middle attack by
Crawford underneath it. Ker Tennessee attacksright side, tip being down Fingle Good
inside the ten foot line. Tennesseefour, Wisconsin three and the fourth.
Tennessee is feeling pretty good about whatthey're doing here. At that time,
Guchikin passed it well, is alittle bit tight. It kind of forced
(01:50:49):
Aspern to set a one handed setto the middle, which to Crawford she
hadn't really gone to all game exceptat one time in the last set,
so I didn't give her any options. Torah's powers won at goots techn Ojo
chases down the pass. They findFranklin on the left. It's an off
speech shot handled by Tennessee. Leftside block by Bucky Robinson and Crawford stopping
(01:51:12):
the Tennessee volunteers on the opposite fourfour, and I really helps the Badgers
get a few good blocks. You'rea great block by Robins at that time.
Again, Gooch tech and kind ofpass that one straight up and Ojo
had a bump set it to theoutside, so you're out of system right
there. Luckily the Badgers were ableto block that and get the point four
each block number ten today for Wisconsinfourth set. The Badger's in a battle
(01:51:34):
now with Tennessee. I'll took thethird set. How about a hammil Ace
Passcott shaped straight down to the courtup near the net, and that's the
second ace for Wisconsin in this match. And they're going right at the front
row outside hit her, so asyou put some pressure on her, she's
thinking about hitting, and it reallydropped and shifted on her. So and
(01:51:56):
I serve Hamil had thirty eight acesa season ago for the Badgers. Good
served by the Badger setter. Therefive four, Bucky lead by one in
the fourth. Here's Kerr middle attackgot It's a Beaker who terminates deep,
so Beaker gets that one for Tennessee. They're really working to get Beaker the
(01:52:20):
ball a lot more in the middleand it wasn't a perfect pass, but
it pushed the center for it,which also makes the middle blocker moved side
to side a bit. And Crawford'sthe smaller middle blocker for the Badges.
At sixty three, they feel atsix five Beakers got the advantage. Here's
Fingal, twelve kills for Fingal.A couple of aces has Wisconsin out assistant.
The Badgers get it to the leftpin and there's Sarah Franklin knocking one
(01:52:44):
deep for the kill. Franklin getsthe Badger good fight side so it's one
option going to the got a goodswing against double block off the top and
for the kill six five Wisconsin inthe fourth set, trying to close it
out in four today, served byFranklin. Down the sideline, Tennessee those
the backgirl Fingal with a fastball goodright past. Franklin tried to field it
(01:53:06):
and had to dive to her right, and she got Tennessee out of a
jam. Not a great pass Center'sfire right sideline, but she was threw
it up center court and Fingal camein there flying and just banged it to
the right back corner the Badgers fromthe back room. Fingal thirteen kills,
one thirty five hitting percentage. Shedoes have eight errors, tied at six.
(01:53:27):
This one serve receive, it's Franklin. They get it right back to
Sarah flies in and bangs one offthe defense at Tennessee left side. More
rattles off the Badger block. It'sgood for Tennessee and the lady Valls lead
it by one. That was toughfor Franklin. I think that she passed
that ball, but she had agood push back to a corner. But
then she got the set at theten footline. And she was a little
late getting there, so she wasn'tfull force taking her biggest swing at it.
(01:53:54):
Love it deep on her serve.Franklin made the wise decision to let
that one go right by her andserve receive. Yeah, that always helps
when it's a good foot and Ihave two feet out and it's no question
out and point for the Badgers.Crawford serving seven apiece in the fourth set.
Wisconsin won the first two sets.Tennessee comes back with a seven point
win in the third. Here's Crawfordright to left, lollipop to the back

row, but pass was a littlenot too tight, tipped by more Wisconsin,
some miscommunications somehow gets it over ona free ball, they're fortunate to
do so back row attack. Finglebounces it right in front of the end
line. Number fourteen for Fingle, leading Tennessee eight seven. Lady vaults and
(01:54:38):
she gets them out of a lotof jams when she can swing out of
the back row and they're in trouble. They're not a great pass on the
free ball even set her flung itback to her on the right back and
she took a big swing and upagainst a couple block scored it's hard for
Booth to get over there from themiddle attack middle blocker position and help with
that block. Here's Jane's serving lefther right for the lady valls woods tech
(01:55:00):
and picks it up, fires thepass up front, left side Temmy Thomas
a la gets it, reaches highfor that one cross court. Indeed,
well, this is interesting now,so we've basically got tell me Thomas playing
the front way. You were concernedabout her hitting percentage and thought Ojo might
play, But it looks like itseems like Ojo's just playing back row passing.
Yeah, it does. As it'seight eight now and Thomas is up
(01:55:24):
there with Robinson in Booth, Ashburn, Goods, Tuckett and Franklin in the
back row passers waiting for this one. For Tennessee. Izzy directs it to
the left back flung up front onthe pass back row fingles stopped and popped

(01:55:45):
Goodness. Booth just smissed us fora time for the kill. Fans allowed
Coach Sheffield even trying to fire offthis crowd at the field house. High
(01:56:10):
passes tight near the net there's ajoust and it's pushed down by Kerr,
who has a little bit of anextended stair back to the badger's side.
Yeah, that last play, Boothjust pounded a thirty one there, And
actually prior to that, I'd lookedat the statue before that three kills,
no airs and ten attempts, andI thought it, they're probably gonna be
going her pretty soon. And ashe did find her, she bounced it
(01:56:31):
and Coach Sheffield was playing cheerleader overthere, getting mc franked up Kurt into
the net and this crowd has suddenlycome to life in the four at ten
nine, Well, he knows there'sanother level that this team can play,
and the Tennessee's kind of taking himout of their comfort zone. So he's
trying to get him fired up,trying to get the crowd fired up.
(01:56:53):
Coach would do all they can hereis Ojo jump floats it into the net.
Hard to get that momentum though witha service error. Yeah, but
again that's another role for Rojo. You know, she came in and now
she's not the libero. She's basicallya defensive specialist for a Timmy Thomas,
(01:57:15):
Ai Lara and she had us siton the bench for three rotations then come
in and serve it. Just somethingshe's not used to doing. That she's
got to learn. Tennessee serving righted Goods tech in nice high pass finds
aspern right side Robinson with a rocketand it stopped Tennesseine middle box right down
(01:57:36):
by Grandberry Point, Wisconsin, anda lift called against Tennessee or did they
call it? Wow? She youknow, that's a tough call for an
official. She threw it fast rightdown that that sounded, but she didn't
swing in and slap it. Andso they tend to think, say,
(01:57:58):
if you pushed it, it can'tstay in your hand too long. So
basically like a like a carry almostin the NBA, you just kind of
have that ball in your hand toolong. Service error goods tech in.
The crowd was ready to erupt overthe last few points, but service errors
have just kept them at Bay elevento eleven. Make noise on the video
(01:58:25):
board. You can tell this crowdis waiting, just waiting for us.
The gig ashburn tracks it, setsit right side, Robinson rolls a shot
underneath it. The Tennessee defense fingalright side. Yes, Tennessee, not
allowing this fan base at the fieldhouse to get fired up in the time
(01:58:49):
off by Wisconsin m twelve to eleven, Lady Balls on the Badgers, up
on the Badgers in the fourth set. Back after this time out, you're
listening to Wisconsin Badger ball Ball presentedby Goodman's Jewelers, providing sparkle to Madison
for ninety years. She just said, whatever, Welcome back to the UW
(01:59:15):
field House in Madison, twelve toeleven, Tennessee. In the fourth set,
as the Badgers and Lady Valls arebattling Wisconsin, sitting four twenty nine,
they trouble by one. Why becauseTennessee's offense continues to use that momentsa
from the third the lady balls arehitting four twenty one. It's a type
(01:59:35):
ty came this head and the Badgersare getting cranked up by the camera going
to our ninety four and a halfyear old fan, Irene here for the
first time. We're trying to gethim and the Badger's going here, but
the balls are not going away easily. Every time Irene comes on the video
board, the fans love it.That's awesome. Taures at GG and ace
(02:00:05):
every time. The fans are readyto get fired up Wisconsin yet to respond.
That's a tough serve there, quiteTarres, a liberal for Tennessee,
had just dropped on Gruschikin and sheshanked it to his own four tenth ace
of the match. This is aservice error sent deep all right, thirteen
(02:00:32):
twelve, midway through the fourth,Tennessee trying to push to five, Wisconsin
trying to end it in four. Here in the home opener, here's Hamil
stepping behind the service line, Tennesseeawaiting this one. Hamil, serving from
the right back, puts it inplay, tight past to the net,
(02:00:55):
tipped over beaker. Oh, andthey got it to the right front.
That was a great eight serve byHammil. It was Tennessee barely got a
fist on the ball at the floor, got it up. The center barely
got a fingertips on the ball atthe top of the tape, and the
middle blocker barely got finger tips onthe squatted they're short tips. So they
did everything perfectly and got the gotthe scar And that's exactly right. Nearly
(02:01:15):
an ace barely got it, nearly, not a set barely got it.
Ggi's pass off to the right.Oh, now Gigi got aced. No.
Now the coaching staff has got alittle dilemma here. They got to
make a change. And you don'tsee this very off when where your lebarrow
gets taken out. Ace number elevenfor Tennessee. Unfortunately it's Tennessee fifteen,
(02:01:43):
Wisconsin twelve, and that is thefifth serve received error by Goots techn This
one off the top of the tapehandle by Bowyer, who's into the match.
Hamil throws it to the left.On the set, Franklin goes wide.
Fourth hitting error for frank Glenn Tennesseesixteen, Wisconsin twelve. It's a
good pass by Barer coming off thebench. They went right at her,
(02:02:04):
and you know she's an experienced passer, there's no doubt about it. She
just has not gotten in this game. And we're in the fourth set.
So that's nerve wracking coming off thebench and them being targeting you. They
can go into the nets. Wisconsin'sdeficit is at three sixteen thirteen Tennessee fourth
(02:02:26):
set. Sarah Franklin's been pretty goodbehind the service line. If you're just
looking at the ace statistic, shehas one of the two aces for Wisconsin
today. This serve goes to TennesseeKerr sets to the left side. Love
it rejected. There's a chouse that'spushed by O Joe. It's popped up
Tennessee retrieves love it left side.Right there at the stopper Jojo Hammel back
(02:02:50):
to arly out left side, bigswing and it's played inside the ten foot
line by the lady falls back rightfingal trick, falls off the top of
the net and falls just clip thenet and then dropped right near the ten
foot line on the right back. Also something we notice here Ojo's playing left
sidebound. She is staying in.Tommy Thomas Eilar is on the bench,
so guid your coaching staff is tryingto figure out the rights group of players
(02:03:15):
on the court. Ojo made somenice plays. They're nice defensive play,
nice jousts, and she's in therefor service even now, so maybe they
feel good with her being out theirfront row service. Sive boy or serve
received to Hammel sets to the leftside. That's OsO big power shot stop
by tourist. Chase down pass theonline Tennessee backwards bump coming up bed free
ball. Franklin Hammel middle shreck touchkill yeah, Beakers saying she touched it
(02:03:40):
because it seemed like it flew outof there. But Beaker said, yeah,
I got I got it. Noneed to challenge. Tennessee has one
challenge remaining. The Badgers have yetto use a challenge in this match.
You know, the crowds really gettinginto ojo taking swings. You know they
love senior attack out there. Youknow it hasn't been doing it all match.
But again, not easy for herin the fourth set. Off since
(02:04:03):
you jump in and swinging. Seventeenfourteen, three point Tennessee lead getting late
in the fourth. Here's Crawford's serveto Torah's perfect pass to curb middle Beaker.
Good Baker kind of deflecting, Ishould say, off the block there.
Yeah, Booth was a little slowgetting her hands over there across the
net on the quick set and surroundingit, so it just deflected off her
(02:04:25):
right hand and down to the rightfront of the Badgers, matching its largest
ly to the set. Tennessee byfour, eighteen to fourteen. They're trying
to get it to five sets today. After Wisconsin won the first two,
Tennessee comes back to win the thirdup by four and the fourth here's the
serve gg back in there, slidingpass up front. Booth gets the set
in the middle on Booth gets enoughon it to drop it down for the
(02:04:47):
kill eighteen fifteen. But that wasa decent pass to start, and Wisconsin
is able to run its offense. You know, a lot going on with
the Badger service Eve guy groups tocome back in the game now, you
know, so lots changes all thetime. Flawyer was in there and Ruchikin's
back all right, here's Ashburn,She's gonna serve from zone five that left
(02:05:15):
back corner. Three Tennessee passers waitingfor this one goes to the left back
of Tennessee Kerr left side. Morehe checked it back over to the Badger's
side. Wisconsin able to play itand pop it up Robins against re checker.
Gigi got a hold about it andit's back to Robinson in a football
the Tennessee. But Bacher's still fortunateto be alive in this one and the
shot by Grandberry goes wide. Pointwas Scottson and the hustle keeping that point
(02:05:41):
alive for the U double views. That was a crazy play initially more on
the left side for Tennessee banged it, but Robinson blocked it back at her
shoulder face and went over the net. The Guccikin made a great save.
I've got the crowd going, that'swhat they were waiting for, and Wisconsin
creeps to within two time out.Tennessee fourth set Lady Balls eighteen Badgers sixteen
(02:06:04):
back. After this break, you'relistening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman's
Jewelers, providing Sparkle to Madison forninety years, John audience, if you
(02:06:25):
wait with you at the field Houseeighteen to sixteen, twenty fourth ranked Tennessee
on top of number one Wisconsin. But the Badgers seemed to look better on
that last point. I mean maybethis uh gets them a little bit fired
up. There's a great defensive playmade, rallied it, stay alive and
the Badgers up trail by two.I should say in the fourth it's all
(02:06:48):
takesas some spark and it started, you know, Robinson's block. Tennessee got
lucky getting over to the that butsome other defensive players but serve as burn
over pass back to Wisconsin, whichtechn bump sets it to Robinson on the
right, and as you might tellby the crowd's reaction, it was good.
Eighteen seventeen Wisconsin trails by one.Wisconsin definitely has another level they can
(02:07:11):
take it to, and having easyAshburn on the service line right now is
a real bonus. One hundred andsixty three career aces. She's three back
from tying the school record at onesixty six. Ashburn serving backgrow passed to
Kerr left sunder got rejected booth andRobinson with a huge fucking block to tie
(02:07:31):
it at eighteen tough enough serve thatTennessee didn't pass a well off for the
senator. Run the middle, whichthey had been doing successfully East, they're
going to the outside and Robinson wasall over that one again for nothing.
Scoring run by Wisconsin. Ashburn servesto the left back curve, sets the
(02:07:53):
right back attack single. Ashburn hasthe dig, bumps it to Robinson,
touches the block on her swing, played backgro by Tennessee left side more rolls
right there. Ashburn gig bumps itto the right. Robinson big shot pushed
near the net by love it.Now there's a whistle that stops play.
What's it gonna be? Net?Violation Wisconsin. Booth was in the net.
(02:08:15):
It sounds like Tennessee back on topby one. But the Badgers seemed
to have found a little bit ofsomething here. They looked like they found
their groove a little bit better.Stops a four nothing run Tennessee by one.
Franklin to Ashburn to the left, and O Joe winds down the line
(02:08:39):
with her shot played by Tennessee andthe open hand kind of wow, just
punch off the block and it dropsdown for more. Yeah fingo on the
right side. The ball just kindof shot at her and she poked it
up with one hand to the outsideand more got a good swing, rattled
it through the block. Booth wasn'tquite able to get out there and clothes
they went so fast. Tennessee twenty, Wisconsin eighteen, late fourth. The
(02:09:03):
Badger's trying to close it out today, Tennessee trying to get us to a
fifth. Ashburn shoot seven mind onbooth. Yes, Booth winds up and
she loves one for the kill andthe Badcher's trail by one great set by
Ashburn. She got pulled out aboutthe eighth foot line and still went to
booth on the thirty one and she'sjust a big target. She's sixty seven
and eything you can get in frontof her. Odds are good. She's
(02:09:24):
going to get a killer at leastdisrupt the offense of the Tennessee. I
would love to see her hitting percentageon that set. It's got to be
outrageously high. Left side fifth beingup the block is Tennessee's. More so.
Janisa Moore with her thirteenth kill togo along, which is three hitting
errors, and Tennessee's back on topby two. Yeah. Smart. She
(02:09:45):
didn't try to bang that. Theside was kind of tight and low and
fast and just kind of threw itat at Booth's Booth was coming from the
middle to the outside, and itrattled down in between the blockers. Here's
king for Tennessee. Badger's trail bytoo late in this fourth set clips the
top of the tape, sprawling outserve receive if it's goods teching right,
sad Robinson winds up, goes downthe line and it's dug by Torres Tennessee
(02:10:07):
near side fingle. That's a shot. Good cross court number seventeen for her
or Tennessee needs three points to getit to a fifth set and the thing
with booth in the middle being sixseven is great, but moving side to
side is not easy for six seven, and she's a little lake getting over
there and and then being able topenetrate the net. So Fingle from the
(02:10:28):
right side just banged at hard crosscourt Serve King right at goots teckn passes
tight. It's near the net.Is he tried to bring it back?
Point Tennessee Ashbourne will get called forthe back row attack. Now GUTCHI can
if she passes that ball in hersetter's front row, awesome pass. Setter
can dump it, she can setit. She can do anything but set
(02:10:48):
her coming out of the back row, she can't get on the plane in
the net. The blocker on Tennesseetouched the ball at the same time,
and that's Tennessee's point. They justtook a four point lead. Now three
en Franklin to Askburn delivering the pastrightside. Robinson powers off the block and
it's good. Twenty three twenty wellwith Scottson found itself down twenty four nineteen
(02:11:09):
at Arkansas on the third set onWednesday night, a seven old run helped
them take a two one lead, and that match and eventually winning in five.
It's going to take a similar typeof effort. Now at twenty three
twenty Robinson's pumped up and she gotRobinson and Franklin in the front row on
the pins, Crawford in the middle, who's just working hard blocking, not
getting a lot of sets, butit's a close one. They'll need to
(02:11:31):
come back here by three. Imean this crowd I have to do.
I have to give Tennessee a lotof credit, this crowd. When there
was a point in this set wherecoach Sheffield was trying to fire up the
fans, they were getting loud.Everybody wanted to get loud. A couple
of service hears quite can't get loud. They went to the commercial break,
they showed our ninety four year oldfan that seemed to honestly electrify the audience
(02:11:52):
once again, and I believe theygot aced. It's this Tennessee has responded
and not allowed this crowd to getbehind the team like you thought several times
in this set it might. Doyou know, it's a team Tennessee who's
picked to be right now preseason thirdin their conference. That's good. That's
a good team. There's no doubtabout it. They're top twenty five caliber
(02:12:13):
team and it doesn't phase them toomuch. It's early in the season.
They're having a good time with thiscrowd and just staying steady. The Badgers
do have a few more matches hereat home, a couple more matches before
hitting the road September thirteenth at FiserForum to take on a top twenty team
in Marquette. That's right, Wisconsinwill be back here at the field House
(02:12:35):
Thursday night against Arizona and then Fridayevening against Miami. Both matches start at
seven. Tickets available right now atUW badgers dot com. Go get them
before they're gone. All right,So back to the court twenty three twenty
Wisconsin needs to almost be perfect downthe stretch here if they want to stop
(02:12:56):
it in four. Otherwise we'll beplaying a fifth set. The Badger's integrate
right now as far as on thecord where their people are. Franklin nineteen
kills, Robinson fourteen kills. Thoseare their two pin hitters right now.
At a critical time in the match, Goods checking behind the line. Wisconsin
got a point to pull the withinthree twenty three twenty Tennessee trying to get
(02:13:16):
it to a fifth set today, which Decond goes to left back, great
pass, curse setting middle attack poppedup for a second, but Grandberry gets
the kill, and when they've gottenit to their middle blocker, Kiki Grandberry,
she's produced ninth kill today. Yep, that's a tough thing when Crawford
gets isolated as a smaller, smallermiddle compared to some They've been scoring consistently
(02:13:37):
in this set. Set point Tennesseetwenty four twenty. Torre's cross court,
Grood's checking on service eat right side. Rob It's going to keep the set
alive. It's oh nice, poppedup once and twice and saved by Tennessee.
(02:13:58):
Unbelievable free ball to Wisconsin offsite fivesagain blocked and down Tennessee with the
set winning block. Twenty five twenty. We're gonna play five sets today in
Madison. We thought Robinson had tokill from the right side, but Kerr
went flying to the back corner tobring it back into play and then they
bumped at it over and then gota block that went deep to Tennessee did
(02:14:20):
deepen the court and down, Sonow they're getting the captain's end for the
flip side on serving side seven totwo. Tennessee run to end the set
after we were tied at eighteen andit's Tennessee and Wisconsin even at two sets
a piece. We'll play a fifthand final set. Next you're listening to
(02:14:41):
Wisconsin Batcheck Volleyball presented by Goodman Steelers, providing Sparkle to Madison for ninety years.
Tennessee takes the fourth twenty five twentyJohn Audios and p wait with you
back at the field house. Thismatch between number one and number twenty four
(02:15:03):
now even at two sets apiece, and for the second time this week,
Wisconsin will play a five set match. They were able to win Wednesday night
in Fayetteville against number twenty one Arkansas. I think the Badgers have to solidify
their service eve here a little bit, a little more consistent than they've got
the the attackers to get the kills, but they're just not able to get
(02:15:26):
much variety and who they were setting, because if you look at the stats
for the Badgers, Franklin Robinson nineteenkills and fourteen kills, then it drops
down to six six, six andthen two for Crawford or Tennessee has three
players more seventeen, thirteen, nineand eight a little more balanced. They
ran the middle a little bit more, but again, if you don't pass
(02:15:46):
the ball, you can't get theball to your middles. It's tough.
Yeah. That Tennessee serving, itseems, over the last two sets,
has been a big, big deal. They had six aces in that third
set, three aces and the fourth, but just having Wisconsin scrambling for the
most part, and on top ofthat, overall it's twelve aces for this
(02:16:07):
Tennessee squad seven errors the Badger's twoaces. Seven errors. All right,
we've got a little issue here, the officials saying we might not Badgers might
not have the right people on thecourt currently. That he wrote down on
the lineup, he put down AiLara and Ojo thought she was going to
be in. So they're making thatswitch to correct that. But generally to
do that, that counts as oneof the one of your subs right there.
(02:16:30):
Okay, now, so before theset even now see seven are back
in, so you know, thepressure gets to everybody a little bit.
As far as when you're putting inthe lineup, you've got to have everybody
in the right positions and the rightnumbers in there, and so that's just
cost them a couple of subs rightthere, all right, So Wisconsin,
(02:16:50):
we'll be receiving the fifth set.Opening serve by the Tennessee setter Kerr,
who has forty eight assists, ninebigs and one eight for the lady falls.
Fifth set goes a goods tech ingreat pass to Aspurn, Middle Booth
bounces it off the top of theblock and it's save balls Middle rejected Grandberry
(02:17:16):
by Booth. Point was Scots andto start the fifth one zip Padgers Gutchikin
made a nice pass. They ranthe middle of Booth and Tennessee did nice
job deflecting the ball up off ofbooth. But then they tried to run
Middle Booth kept her hands up higherthat time and got the block one nothing.
Wisconsin, fifth and final set nowat the field house. Here's OsO
(02:17:37):
jump float off the top of thenet, saved on service by Torres left
side, more end line saved byOsha. Wisconsin attacks right side. Robinson
tips into the block and it's poppedup by Tennessee. Down ball laser dead
gooch Techen near the net played byAspurn, played back by Ojo and a
start free ball. Here we goto the left side. More winds up,
which techen has the stuff? Therecomes Wisconsin. Franklin off speed off
(02:17:58):
the top of the block near side. Tennessee kept it alive, backrow love
it will shove it over, freeball to Robinson to Aspurn to Franklin left
side touch at the net point Wisconsintwo nothing, Badgers. Yeah, Guchikin
made a nice dig early in thatrally, and then Franklin great shot off
(02:18:18):
the top of the block. Tennessee'snot complaining. I think the right side
was admitting saying, yeah, Itouched that. They do have a challenge
if they want to use it,and they get an extra challenge in the
fifth, so they have a coupleto use. Wisconsin also has two challenges
to use if they need to.Here's the serve by Ojoe, tight pass,
middle attack, Polk Granberry diving savedAspurn, bumps over to Franklin on
(02:18:39):
the nearest side, got the blocktouch Lady balls right there right side,
Chuck get it out. Franklin andBooth team up to make it three nothing
Wisconsin. In the fifth. They'vebeen trying hard to stop our this whole
whole match, and they finally gotover there, got their hands across the
(02:19:00):
met before she swung at A niceblock by the Badgers. Ruth and Franklin
block number twelve. Check it.I believe number twelve as a team today.
Yes, three nothing with Scotts andhere's Osho goes to the right back
at more Kerr has to track topass down to the back grow thin the
left side, sing rejected more, trying to appeal to the up official.
(02:19:31):
What do you think more is?I don't really know asking about the ball
was blocked by Robinson on the rightcenter, went all the way across to
the right side of Tennessee and downtheir player was not able to get to
the ball and pass it up.I don't think there's any kind of interference
above or below the net. Itell you, Ojo just set a zinger
of a serve over there. Ireally kept Tennessee out of their offense and
(02:19:52):
forced them to go to the outsideattack or more and Robinson's had her number
for a while and Tennessee takes timeout for nothing and the score A great
start to the fifth set for firstranked Wisconsin up by four on number twenty
four Tennessee and we'll take a breakhere in the fifth they're listening to Wisconsin
(02:20:15):
Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle to Madison for ninety years.
Second five set match of the Year, four Wisconsin, John Odius and Pete
wait with you. After winning thefirst two sets, twenty fourth ranked Tennessee
(02:20:37):
comes back with third and fourth setvictories. But a great start Pete four
Wisconsin in this fifth set. Yeah, this is a great spot to being
up four zero and Ojos on theonline, serving tough balls and keeping Tennessee
out of their offense. Boots workinghard in the middle. Robinson, it's
doing a great job blocking down theright jump float by Ojo to the back
(02:21:03):
rove Tennessee to the right side.Fingle off speed though it's just gonna fall
down for the first Lady Walls pointof the set, kind of trickles off
the blocker's hands inside the ten footline. Four one Wisconsin. Though.
In the fifth, that was agreat tip by Fingle on the right side,
and she's been banging the ball, but she tipped it just over booth
and Booth actually on the way downalmost pulled it down with her. She
just couldn't do anything else with it. There comes the left or right sir
(02:21:30):
by the lady valls high off theplatform or boots check in saved at the
end line by Ojo. Franklin getsa half swing at it and Tennessee picks
it up left side. That's loveit. G Gi right there sticks to
pass in the middle of Booth getsit off the set by ASPERN. Tarter.
Booth makes a five one Wisconsin.Gutchikin's hanging in there. She passed
(02:21:54):
it backwards a little bit, butthen she came up with a nice dig
to start to play for a nicethirty one to Booth over the top of
the block. Here it comes ggto serve right to left four point Wisconsin
lead tied pass Kur brings it back. They'll punch in the middle there by
Tennessee, Wisconsin. No problem withthe right side of Robinson. Snap with
the wrist and it's stopped back girlby the lady vault lest side. Love
(02:22:16):
it into the Buckey block covered. Now there's a jousse. It's shoved over
by Granberry, but Wisconsin kept itoff the floor. Right sign Robinson open
hand tip sliding in tours with thesafe left side, love it big snap
Gegi Love a great dig left sideFranklin into the block back to Wisconsin Asburn
calls for it. Gigi hasn't bumpset left side, got it six one
(02:22:37):
Wisconsin, number twenty today for SarahFranklin. Yeah, it's good. Chicken
made a nice diving big to herleft from the left side line. And
then there's a time where Ashburn dugthe ball and goodchi Can had to make
a nice bump set to the outsideof Franklin. So she's doing a lot
of things well. Twentieth kill forFranklin. Six one lead in the fifth
(02:22:58):
for the Badgers. Here's Good's technbackpedaling pass by Tennessee to the middle of
the net and effect ball goes downby love it or love it. That
is her ninth kill to go alongwith six errors. That's a great play
by Tennessee. And the center gotpushed to the right sideline and the left
side attack or more came into aboutthree quarters away on the court. Really
hard for Robinson to keep up withthat. And and Crawford's over on the
(02:23:20):
right side with the metal blocker torresleft right for Tennessee pass gg backwards to
the end line o show with thetight bump set, it's not going to
clear the net. It's going todrop down. I'm not sure if Tennessee
got a hand on it or not, doesn't matter. It's a point to
the lady balls and the bancher's leadis at three six three Wisconsin fifth set.
We're going to fifteen torres the liberocross court to zone one right at
(02:23:45):
gg. Here's Aspern setting it leftside. Franklin winds up rattling it through
the block, but it's saved andall bump set. Fingle on her approach
goes into the net, no goesinto the block, and it got deflected
back out. It's a tool shotand a kill at six four Fingle,
I think that's her nineteenth tale heretoday ten airs the only thing one ninety
(02:24:07):
one. But still she she canbang the ball six four badgers lead,
good second serve, receive, directit to Ashburn left side Franklin. She
got two shot off that Tennessee block. Twenty one kills for Sarah Franklin.
Seven four Wisconsin fifth set. Thefinger a little little bit of her own
medicine just right back at her andtwo a little up the block from the
left side and I swing by Franklin. Sarah Franklin. Nine of her twenty
(02:24:31):
one came in that first set.Wisconsin dominated the first twenty five sixteen won
the second set before Tennessee took thethird and fourth Gammel behind the service line
for the Badgers, serving from theright back goes down the line. Here
comes Tennessee to the right side. That's Fingle under the block, but a
tool SHOT's good. Tennessee center CERsjust forcing it to Fingle over there because
(02:24:58):
she was three quarters away across thecard twelve foot Linees still flung it back
and Fingle found a way to score. She's a great attacker now. Fingle
up to twenty kills seven five Wisconsinfifth set o Joe to a right on
service eat. But Wisconsin's out ofsystem scrambling down ball set over to Tennessee
(02:25:20):
by Franklin. Left side block onthe outside, and it's nice how the
Badgers kind of moved from players aroundfrom middle to right. And Crawford has
been working so hard in the middleto do something today. But she was
able to be on the right sideof nice swing block and just bounced that
attack down. Sealed up the antennaand got the block. Crawford is silk
(02:25:43):
kluts are going to get a blockassist at Crawford and Smereck who was over
there, but Smereck wasn't very closeto that. When that was all Crawford,
maybe they'll change it. Yeah,I thought that might say block solo
Crawford. But nevertheless, it wasa dynamic play that just gave Wisconsin an
eight to five lead as the twoteams will switch sides three point Badger's lead,
(02:26:07):
trying to get another ranked win thisseason, Wisconsin's four noal overall in
three and oh against the top twentyfive. Here's Franklin right hand to the
left back pass, guided up frontto curb back row thing go along,
got away from her nine five.Yeah, she missed timed under. The
(02:26:30):
site was little tight and she couldn'tquite get to it and just sailed it
long indeed, ten feet out ofbounds. Time out. Tennessee four point
was scots and lead, and sofar the Badgers looked like the team in
control in this fifth set. Wisconsinfour kills, thirteen swings, no errors,
Tennessee four kills, five hitting errorsin this set, and the Badgers
(02:26:54):
have cranked it up. I'm notsure a little bit. Passing hasn't been
great, but people have been gettinghitting on a jams like Franklin and blocking
wise Crawford, that last one wasphenomenal to watch. She'll remember that one
for a long time, but shewon't care about that one at all if
they don't get the wins. Sothey want to finish this thing off pretty
fast and keep a big point spread. And that blocking has really helped Wisconsin.
(02:27:18):
Early in this set, Carter Boothhad a solo block, Franklin and
Booth teamed up for a block,Robinson and Booth teamed up for a block.
Crawford and Samreck just got that lastblock. So overall, what is
this in this set? They hadeleven going into the set. They have
four blocks this set and Wisconsin toTennessee fifteen blocks to five. So that's
(02:27:43):
a big difference. And they're comingon late and strong the Badgers are,
and that's a great way to finishit. Wisconsin's overall hitting percentage peat could
be a school record today right now. It's at three twenty six, fifty
eight kills, fourteen errors, onehundred and thirty five attack attempts. Their
(02:28:05):
previous mark under twenty five point rallyscoring is three oh seven. That was
at Penn State on the twenty secondfive sets hit three oh seven. So
if this three twenty six or higherstands, or an even higher than three
oh seven, we'll have a newschool record for five sets. They did
hit two ninety five. I thinkit was Wednesday night. That was third
(02:28:28):
most in a five set Badger's match. So they're coming through in crunch time.
So far. Ninety five goes tothe back row, perfect pass ker,
middle speaker, Good just slapped itto the left front basically and it's
down nine six. Yeah, Badgerspretty much knew that that's where it was
(02:28:50):
going on a good pass and Ojelcame in to try to be on the
center and the middle blocker and helpout, but breakers six five and went
over over the top of her.Five kills, five errors. Now for
Tennessee, they're hitting zero right atGigi spins it to hammele I set up
left side. There's Osoe dug byLovett. Now the left side attack more
(02:29:11):
crying in their Franklin with their rightfisted stop. Now Crawford with it free
ball. Four hits called against WisconsinI think oh Joe didn't see between two
of the Badgers initially and just kindof a quick shank off two of them.
Okay, I didn't see it.Yeah, four hits against Wisconsin,
(02:29:33):
nine seven. Their lead is downto two fifth step going to fifteen.
Love it to serve from the middleof the end line right to left for
Tennessee. Lasers it in at Ojoepulls hamil away from the net, sets
the pipe off speed roll shop byFranklin Torres as a stop. Fingle tries
to tip into the block to niedand cover. Tennessee has it again to
the left side. That's more blockedback by smacking covered by Torres. Tennessee
(02:29:56):
tries the left. Here's more firesit more on point. Tennessee touch at
the nets. Nine eight. Thevolunteers down by one. Badgers are getting
some blocks, but Tennessee was scramblingand popping him right back up. Nice
carverage by Tennessee. They hung inthere and we've got a one point game.
Wisconsin absorbing a three nothing run.The Badgers scored the first four points
(02:30:22):
of the set. They've led byas many as five goots. Tech in
the hamble to the right side Smuckflips the block down for a kill.
Good pass by goochs Techen just kindof center card ege foot line, nothing
fancy, not too tight, nottoo low, but good pass and one
the right side is shreck and wedon't see her taking any swings from the
(02:30:45):
right, but she didn't. Nicetruck going cross court on that one,
getting the killing two point Badger's lead. They need five for the victory.
Here today it's ten eight and JoslynBoyer serving specialists into throw one left to
right for the Badgers, has Tennesseerunning backroyl finglet it off the block of
Ojo and Booth though everybody was comingthis way for Tennessee, and the setter
set it back exactly to the oldYou gotta follow the blockers have to follow
(02:31:09):
the center. She moves forward andshe flung it backwards. That's her big
target and they open it up forher. But that's a great sec perfect
location, and then great attack outof the back right side spot off the
block for the kill. Ten nine. Wisconsin's leader is down to one fifth
and final set and the home openerwhere it comes to serve at Goots tech
(02:31:33):
In forgot aced. We're tied toten, great serve super low to the
tape, flung it to the left, low and left to gout chicken and
she sprawled out and kind of hitthe ground and hit her fist and bounced
up. So we got a tiegame time out Badger's ten ten. Now
in set number five, Wisconsin gotout to a great start in this fifth
(02:31:58):
set. Solo block by Carter Booth, a kill by Timmy Thomas, and
then two more blocks, but Wisconsinup for nothing. The Badgers would be
able to stretch this lead out tosix to one, so a five point
lead at six one, but sincethat point, a nine to four run
by Tennessee has been able to tiethis match up at ten apiece. So
(02:32:28):
now it's the first to five herein the fifth set. Lam's got a
great match to watch here and hopefullythey can push the Badgers through, and
they can mostly again we're back toservice e. If they passed the ball,
they're scaring well, but they've gotto give the setters a few options
out there. The Badgers do sothey can hold the Tennessee blockers and get
(02:32:50):
some split blocks. Wisconsin five killssixteen swings in this set. That's three
twelve hitting percentage with no hitting errorsTennessee hitting o eighty seven in the match
Wisconsin three twenty four Tennessee two elevenBadger's fifteen blocks Tennessee five Tennessee plus five
in digs and the difference at theservice line plus eleven in aces for Tennessee,
(02:33:18):
padgers up a big block with boothand smack in the middle of the
right side, so we'll see Ojoon the left side. So we decided
to stay with her this set.Timmy Thomas Lars stayed on the sideline,
but Olisho has done well. Fanson their feet in the fifth jeans to
(02:33:41):
serve for Tennessee fires in in it, Franklin, if it passed up from
booth, reaches high and drops itdown near the ten foot line, love
a claimy, I kept that offthe floor. They're gonna call it down
And now the Tennessee coach out tocontest this one. While we see it
challenge, might as well use it. It seemed like it hit the floor
(02:34:05):
and Tennessee coach he rack'em wat willsay, hey, why don't you take
a look at that one again?Yeah? Again. She just doesn't want
Wisconsin to take the momentum and thecrowd and everything, and and the point
when she thinks there's just shot atreversing it. It sure seemed like it
hit the ground, you know.Great choice by the Badgers and going high
to six seven is tough to stopthat when you've got a one on one
(02:34:28):
and she just kind of threw itdown about the five foot line scene all
right, now, the score isWisconsin eleven at Tennessee ten. And a
quick look what, Yeah, shedid it wrong. The official just got
it wrong. Okay, I wasgonna say, And first she pointed the
wrong direction. I'm thinking, whatdid you mean? It would just be
(02:34:50):
a replay, right, So shedefinitely just yep, just early in the
season for the officials too, yep, just pointed the wrong way. Yep,
I get it, no big dead. It's funny when I see the
other side, like, why doyou talk like to me? That's obviously
because it would be a replay. The signal would be given if you had
won. It's not as if they'relike, oh, never mind, we're
(02:35:11):
changing the call. It's just anhonest mistake, I was. My point
is I always think it's funny whenthough that the coaches an eventure, like,
what are you talking about? Well, pretty obvious to what they're talking
about. Eleven ten Wisconsin four pointsaway from the five set victory, trying
to pick up their fourth ranked winof the season. Great rotation with Ashburn
(02:35:33):
serving is he will serve from theleft back those cross courts seals it to
love it set up, goes tothe near side more with a soft tap
and the Badgers are underneath it.Who's checking over to the right side.
That's Robinson into the block and thetool SHOT's good. Well, now they're
gonna challenge this one though, becausethey think I Lara touched it and the
(02:35:54):
front as a wind fire, butI think she whipped it, whipped at
it. Well, we see thelast challenge used by Tennessee. This would
be interesting. You have to Ithink you have to Tennessee two and two
and challenges today and this is theirfinal challenge. Robinson took Robinson took a
(02:36:15):
big swing on the right side andbanged it off to Tennessee block and went
clear cross court. A Lara wascoming to cover it kind of whizzed by
her. She kind of reached atit to try to stop it, but
it was going out of bound,so she try to stay away. Tennessee
thinks she touched it, Badger thinksshe did, and fans thinks she didn't.
Here we go, and we haveyet to see a replay of it.
(02:36:35):
There we go. Does Tammy touchit? She's got a little wrist
band on it might make it easierto see or not, I know,
a little right, Yeah, that'snot that's a tough year for us.
Yeah. Right now we're watching asidelines and zoom in from the opposite sideline.
Here's another look at it, Robinson, he hits it off the block.
Does Tammy touch it? She definitelywent after it, Like you said,
(02:36:58):
I don't know if they're going tohave enough hear. Oh does the
ball move right? Does it changethe direction of the ball at all?
Oh, dude, that's close kindof you did? That's close? I
did not really unless they zoom inweekend tell I did not envy the replay
official on this one. Yeah, that's gonna be challenging. Think of the
(02:37:22):
days before replay all these things. It's just officials do what they can.
But then you gotta go with it. Yeah, exactly, and and I
mean obviously two calls would have beenwrong today at exactly a lot get reversed
at least two. Yeah, they'rehuman, the balls moving quickly. There's
slight touches right now. It's atwo point Wisconsin lead at twelve. Ten
(02:37:46):
Tennessee claiming a touch after the toolshot by Robinson which went from the right
sideline all the way to the leftand out of bounds. Thomas was in
that left front area. Tammy triedto put her hand out, and now
they're just trying to figure out toTammy touch it, and if she did,
it'll be off of Wisconsin point Tennesseeand it will be tie it at
(02:38:07):
eleven. Instead, it's a twopoint Wisconsin leader. Remember we're going to
fifteen and it's at twelve to eleven, and now they're done taking a look
at it, and we're gonna getour decision here shortly still talking with me,
(02:38:31):
but not once again the extended conversationtouch Tammy touched it. We're tied
at eleven. It is funny howthe fans grew. I was like,
well, if they saw it onthe video? Is I hope they saw
it on the video? Serious? She could now the fans extra loud.
(02:38:56):
Tied at eleven, the exteen, four points away from the fifth set win
all right to left the serve.Tennessee Franklin fields it perfect pass Ashburn to
Booth, who got rejected. Theygot popped up for a moment or two
before falling to the floor. InTennessee has the lead twelve to eleven.
Yeah, great block there that timeplay Tennessee Randbury, Ohio state transfer after
(02:39:18):
hands High got the block. Ladyballs serving right to left. Up by
one, they're three points away.It goes at Cooch tech and High pass
chased down by Ashburn setting to theleft front O Joe reaches denied and covered.
Wisconsin will have another try. Howabout the right side? Robinson big
into the block and it's pushed backand covered. Bat Robinson another time off
(02:39:39):
speed down off of Fingle. Hetried to play it right near the ten
foot line and we're tied at twelve. Great adjustment by Robinson. After getting
blocked on the first ball, Badgerscovered it, got it right back to
her Ashburn. No, she's thego to player there in that rotation,
and she did a little low screenroll shot to the center court and ten.
(02:40:00):
He shanked at our bones. Wisconsinwith the first two set wins here
today. Tennessee takes the third andfourth, and now we are tied at
twelve each. In the fifth set, Julia Ojo, who started at Lebero
today, now played outside hitter toserve left or right here in the fifth
set, it's on the hands oflove It and it's an ace Pjo and
(02:40:22):
we'll get a Jigi chump into thearms of Julio thirteen twelve, Wisconsin,
two points away from the win today. He's been serving a tough all day.
It is nicer shank backwards by Tennessee. One point lead now for the
(02:40:43):
number one ranked Badgers, serving againat love It, passed, shanked again
save Torres bumps at Austin More don'tput that week except to Carter Booth.
Booth three checks it in the middleof the net and it's Matt's point in
Madison. Another good serve by Ojoeand an average passed by Tennessee. Cours
(02:41:03):
of all the outside and then onthe outside she got a little cautious and
just did a little roll shot again. Roll shot to sixty seven, does
noise end well. Ojoe fires itover to the left back. Tennessee will
attack of the far side fingle rejected, pop back up again by the lady
Halls Fingle again, wine zone, cross court down fighting off the first match
(02:41:26):
point fourteen thirteen sign out to Tennesseeand nice coverage by Tennessee and the initial
block by the badge who has beenset to the right side. And think
of this, Presi Dono waved theblast a cross court for the badge of
block for the point. Franklin leftback Enchi middle back Ojoe on the right
(02:41:48):
back awaiting to serve. It's keenright to left for Tennessee. On match
point number two, left side,Franklin fires one torres popped off, hit
the video board right side Fingle right, there's Ashburn underneath it. Bumps at
Franklin for the match roll shot intothe block. It's a two shot that
(02:42:09):
falls and was Scots and wins infive in the home opener. That's how
you want on the left side atcrunch time is Franklin. Jade of Brianty's
shots, the last one score justa little off speed shot off the right
side blocker and just landed maybe sixeight inches off the sideline and out of
bombs for the Badger point and thematch win was Scotson picks up another one
(02:42:37):
and the Badgers remain undefeated this seasonat five and ozero. The u W
now four and ozero against the toptwenty five and number one is still unbeaten.
Horch Sheffield and all the fans arebreathing, breathing a sigh of relief.
He knows it's a work in progress. They're just still of dusting their
lineup and who's passing next to eachother? Just still come against come out
(02:43:01):
with a win against the top twentyfive team. It's a good afternoon's work.
Third match of the week three andoh this week five and oho overall
coming up on the postmatch show. We're from Wisconsin. Associate head coach Gary
White hoped to be joined by aBadger's player as well, and we'll run
through all these final numbers for you. Wisconsin a winner today in the home
(02:43:22):
opener. Back with the postmatch showin two minutes and you are listening to
Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelersproviding Sparkle to Madison for ninety years.
Postmatch show underway from the UW Fieldhouse. John Addis joined by Pete Wade and
(02:43:45):
Well after the first two sets,we didn't expect probably to play five.
Many fans here, including myself hereputting the broadcast booth, weren't expecting that.
But give credit to Tennessee for battling. So let's take a look at
the game recap as Wisconsin was ableto go on a seven run to end
that first set. You know, like I said at the time, like
you look back at that first set, twenty five sixteen oh, Wisconsin one
(02:44:07):
pretty handedly by nine. Well, they actually were in a battle with Tennessee
and had a two point lead ateighteen to sixteen before they go on that
seven oh run to end it.Nine kills from Sarah Franklin the Badgers at
five eighty six to one sixty seven. They did look pretty good though.
Twenty five to sixteen second set onceagain a battle. Now the Badger's defense
stepped it up seven blocks in thatset and they were very, very crucial
(02:44:30):
for Wisconsin. This was a tightgame all the way down to the very
end where the Badgers able to hangon after being tied at twenty two apiece,
they go on the three to onerun to end it and they get
a twenty five twenty three second setvictory. Then this is where the Tennessee's
serving the only started to pick up. The Badgers on serve receive were not
handling it very well. Tennessee inthat third set at six aces, the
(02:44:54):
Badgers did hit three sixty, Tennesseehit two ninety six, but the fall's
going on three run to end itand they win at twenty five to eighteen
in the third set. In thatfourth set, once again the Badgers,
You're looking for them to close thedoor and they never could. In the
fourth at one point, Coach Sheffieldtrying to fire up the fans and it
(02:45:16):
definitely worked, but they were notable to really fully get behind the team
because of that Tennessee's serving. Theydid go on a four oh run to
tie at eighteen at one point, but Tennessee in a seventy two run after
that twenty five twenty Lady falls. So that brings us to the fifth set,
where Wisconsin and at Tennessee would battle. First four points of the set.
Wisconsin that Badgers actually had a sixto one lead as well. In
(02:45:39):
that fifth and final set, threeties, two lead changes, and down
the stretch the two teams would battleone more time, tied at eleven before
Wisconsin able to put away Tennessee fifteento thirteen. And that's a three and
oh week, five and oh startand four oh against the top twenty five.
Yeah, and even from the firstcouple of rallies of the mad which
(02:46:00):
I could see the Tennessee was agood athletic, well trained team and it
wasn't going to be easier for theBadgers. So, and that's the thing
in volleyball. You win a firstset, great, you win the second
set, great, You're still startingover. You gotta win the third.
And Tennessee came back and made someadjustments, adjustments served tougher, went to
the middle attack a little bit more, started getting the momentum on their side
of the net, and they sustainedthat, maintained it through the third and
(02:46:22):
fourth and into the fifth. Itreally came down to the wire. Obviously,
it made for an exciting match, but a great Badger win. Wisconsin
wins it in five sets, nowtwo and oh in five setters. Overall
in this match, Wisconsin hits threeoh six. So that is a five
set record for highest hitting percentage intwenty five point rally scoring history for the
Badgers, and five sets Tennessee hitstwo h five assists plus two for the
(02:46:45):
Lady valls sixty two to sixty digssixty one to fifty seven in favor of
Tennessee. Blocks to the Badgers oneoff, tying their season high. They
had seventeen and five sets against ArkansasWednesday. They go for sixteen in this
five center against twenty fourth ranked Tennessee. Meanwhile, behind the service line,
a big difference there twelve aces sevenerrors by Tennessee, three aces seven errors
(02:47:09):
by Wisconsin and blocking a huge differencein the blocking obviously, and why Wisconsin
did so well with their hitting percentage. There's just so high. Sixteen blocks
to six for Tennessee and a recordhitting percentage for the Badgers, which I'm
sure the coaching staff doesn't care muchabout. They just want to get to
win anyway they can. But theywant to solidify their entire game even more.
(02:47:33):
And who's going to be in thelineup. That's something we knew about
when they got a couple of greattransfers in is like where do they fit,
what pieces of the puzzle will theybe? And it seems like they
went back to getting ojo in alittle bit more with someone who's comfortable on
the court and comfortable with the otherteammates, and it worked out well for
them. Okay, So I dohave a little bit of a discrepancy.
So the box score we have hereon paper form says three thirteen, so
(02:47:56):
that would be a record. Theprevious record was three seven. But the
iPad stats that we have say theyhit three oh six, So I don't
know if it's three oh six orthree thirteen. I'm gonna trust like these
stats. I feel like if youput in something after the fact, you
might update the actual stats. Youmight have printed the stats right after the
(02:48:18):
match. So it's close. Howabout that. It's either first or second
all time depending on which stats sheet. And I'm I'm trusting the iPad over
the paper copy on this one.All right, We'll take a break when
we come back and look at theindividual stats. We'll hear from associate head
coach Gary White at some point aswell. Here back in a couple of
minutes, you're listening to Wisconsin BadgerVolleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle
(02:48:39):
to Madison for ninety years, onea day for Sarah Franklin and the Badgers
five set win for top ranked Wisconsin, another ranked win as they get by
(02:49:01):
twenty fourth rank Tennessee. Let's takea look at the individual stats, and
you know Tennessee hit two oh five. They started really slow in this match,
with a one sixty seven attack percentagein the first oh seventy and the
second, and then once again itdipped in the fifth, but those third
and fourth sets over three sixty andover four hundred and the fourth so Morgan
final. They're high flying. Attackerfinished with a team high twenty two kills
(02:49:24):
hits two oh four with five digsand three aces, and then it was
more with fourteen kills low errors forher four hit two seventy eight. Lovett
had nine kills hit oh fifty three, but did contribute with fifteen digs,
second most on the team. Grandberryin the middle nine kills hits two eleven
with four blocks, Beaker another middleblocker, eight kills five hundred fifty five
assists for the setter Kerr, whoalso had a double double with eleven digs,
(02:49:48):
chipped in with an ace. Torrezthe libero had sixteen digs and four
service aces behind the line for Tennessee. For Wisconsin, a season high end
kills for Sarah Franklin. F Klingoes off for twenty three kills. Peach.
She had nine of her twenty threein the first set and she just
looked so comfortable. Three fifty twoher hitting percentage today, Well, she's
(02:50:09):
really stepped up her game this seasonafter you know, going through some challenges
physically just over the summers, couldcome back like this is unreal and much
needed by the Badgers. To havea go to player that can get you
out of jams like she does hasbeen fantastic, that's for sure. Twenty
three kills once against, seven digs, four blocks, and ace in an
(02:50:30):
assist for Franklin. Devin Robinson anotherperformance of double figures after leading the team
and kills on Wednesday, having elevenagainst Arkansas. On Thursday, she goes
for fifteen kills and it's two seventywith five blocks. Key contributions by those
two. So what is that thirtyeight kills, nine errors between the two
of them, sixty two and seventeenfor the entire team. Carter Booth at
(02:50:50):
eight kills, had one hitting errorand eight blocks eight and eight for Carter
Smereck had seven kills, hits fivehundred with four blocks, Semi Imisi Laura
six kills, buck eighty eight witha couple of blocks. Caroline Crawford had
six blocks in two kills. GoolJa gouch Teken, who played Leberro at
one point did not start at Leberofor the Badgers, had nine h Diggs
(02:51:15):
nine assists and also had a killon what was supposed to be a free
ball for her. Let's see heretaking a look at the stats to thirty
one assists for Izzy with eleven diggs, Hamil had sixteen and twelve with an
ace and Julia Ozel who started atLeberro, another match of double figures for
(02:51:37):
her. I believe that is seveneight matches in a row dating back to
last season. Joined by Carter Boothhere in the broadcast, Booth, how
are you? I'm good? Howare you? What was that win like
today? That's a battle? Yeah, it was. It was definitely a
battle. We learned a lot aboutourselves during that match, which is,
you know, one of our favoritematches, not the ones that comes to
breasy, but the ones that wehave to really grind through. It feels
(02:51:58):
good, you know, to win, but I also know that we have
a lot of work to do,and so I'm excited to get back in
the gym this week and to cleanup some of the things that we may
be missed during that match. Yeah, you said you learned a lot,
but what we're maybe one or twoof the things you learned the most throughout
the course of this match, Andwhat do you see as kind of some
of those things you want to getback into the gym and try to work
out. I think most of all, it's I learned that it's mental.
(02:52:20):
You know, we have the toolsthere, the tools for success the whole
time. We have those tools, and we just need to learn how to
tap into those and not get socaught up on certain things, you know.
So I think that just having thatnext bomb mentality is something that we
can all work on going forward. But I feel like we did a really
good job of fighting when it camedown to it. That's one thing.
(02:52:41):
This team has a whole lot offight, no matter where we're at,
no matter how far we're down.We like to call ourselves heartbreakers, so
you know, and basically that justmeans no matter how down we are,
we're gonna come back. We're gonnawin that set, We're gonna break your
hearts. Like, that's the mindsetthat we have. And I think that
that tough mindset of just going backand bad d every single time is something
that we did a really good jobat and that I want to keep going
(02:53:05):
forward. It seemed like they keptsetting you more and more as a match
went on, which I'm sure youloved and you did well. But what
what was your challenge against this teamas a middle blocker because they ran a
pretty fast offense going side to side. Yeah, so what was your mindset
as you were learning them as anopponent as the match went on? You
know? My mindset, which issomething that I'm still working on, is
delegation. You know, when anoffense is that fast, you you can't
(02:53:28):
get to everything, or else you'regonna miss everything. Right, So for
me, it's making sure that Iam commanding the front row and delegating to
my pins like hey, you gotme in the seam, or I need
your help on this ball. Thisball is fast, I need you,
And so just having that communication andrealizing that I don't have to do it
all myself. I have people aroundme who are great blockers as well,
(02:53:48):
and who can help me with thesefaster offenses. And you know, we'll
get adjusted to them as we go, as we continue to work as a
team and as a system. Butyeah, for right now, it's it's
about realizing that you have help andyou can use it. And that block,
I think really obviously help propel yourteam, especially in that fifth set.
Five of the team's sixteen blocks comein that fifth set. In your
(02:54:09):
opinion, just how vital were thosedefensive plays? I think that it was
incredibly vital, not only like pointwise, but for momentum just getting a
stuff that's like our team's favorite thingin the world. So getting those just
really was a huge energy booster forus, and it helped us to propel
us through the rest of that fifthset. And I love the energy you
(02:54:30):
bring, especially when you make adefensive play. Yeah, tell me what's
going through your mind when you domake a play and you kind of you
don't let the other side, No, I just got you a little bit.
I mean, it's not like it'snot malicious, right, I'm I'm
just fired up that you know,I got that play. So it's just
sort of like, yeah, that'sright, Like I'm here like, don't
(02:54:50):
forget about me, because I feellike middles get forgotten about sometimes just because
we're not super involved in the offense. So you know, when I get
those defensive plays, I'm like, yeah, I'm here. Hello. Basically
hard to forget those eight blocks byyou individually. Thanks for the time,
Carter, Thank you. All Right, there you go. That's Carter Booth
postgame three two Badgers winning five. She'll hand the headset over to associate head
(02:55:15):
coach Gary White and we'll talk alittle bit about this one. Congratulations on
the victory in your opinion, fifthset? Are we just talking to Carter
about the blocks and kind of howthat helps the momentum kind of get going
for your team. How'd you seethe fifth man? It was a tail
of two cities on that type ofmatch. It started out, well,
we're doing a really well, reallygood job offensively. Defensively, we had
(02:55:37):
some queues that we thought we couldhave been a little cleaner at in the
first and a second, and thenthe third and the fourth. We kind
of let off the gas a littlebit and and you saw it. You
saw it with our attack numbers wentdown, our defensive numbers went down,
and we weren't kind of in thataggressive mindset of trying to find and are
where they going? What are theytrying to do. We're a little hesitant
on some of their quick attackers, and so well I was excited for is
in the fifth is that our eyeswere in the right place, where mindset
(02:56:00):
was in the right place. Ourservers were attacking space, creating opportunities,
and we gave it. We didn'tgive up the little stuff. We didn't
give up some tip shots, wedidn't give up the little roll shots that
were happening earlier in the match. So I think that kind of stood out
to me. How did you makethe decision as a staff to change libos
and change passing, you know, formate net formations, But who was next
to whom you know in there? And how are you going to benefit by
(02:56:22):
the passer defender or the attacker onthe court. Yeah, So Tennessee had
three servers that were pretty elite servers. Those balls were low, flat,
tight to the tape. They kindof put it in good space. They
knew exactly where they wanted to pinpoint. Our first ball side out kill ratio
was really really high. When wewere getting good quality swings, getting kind
of at least two option passes, and what we wanted to do is find
(02:56:43):
ways to create more opportunities and wethought switching may be able to do that.
It also allowed us to have bothGGNA serve in their rotations and kind
of work through that space and allowedus to kind of manipulate how we wanted
to change our front row at times, like we did there in the fifth
of bringing Temian to be a littlebit more of a physical player there for
the front row and then have Ozzplayed the kind of the back row and
then stay in for the rest.So we're kind of looking at more of
(02:57:05):
the first ball side out rate? Was that what was the biggest difference,
Because getting back to you know, changing the barrows and the Tennessee servers,
you talked about how elite a fewof them were. Tennessee it seemed to
really dominate that side, especially inthe fourth where there's a time when Coach
Sheffield is trying to get the crowdfired up. This crowd was ready to
get fired up, but Tennessee justkind of kept them at bay. And
I think you might give credit totheir servings for that, credit to their
(02:57:28):
whole team. I mean That's thefun part of scheduling ranked teams in the
pre conference is you're you're trying tofigure out what things can press your team,
what issues can you have, andlike a team like this, you've
got a really good lefty right side, we haven't played that, and so
knowing where that could be in thelong run against some of the top teams
in the country when you get toour conference of what you've got to be
able to fight against. So Ithink that's one of the things. I
thought their outsides knew how they wantedto handle the ball when they were in
(02:57:52):
certain kind of non perfect situations, and they manipulated our block early on really
well. And then some of thoseoff speed stuff, they knew where they
want to go within. We've justgot to be better at picking that up.
Congrats on the victory. Thank youguys. All right, that's associated
head coach Gary White. The Badgersremain undefeated with the victory here today Wisconsin.
