On the Badgers Sports Network from LearFields setting the left side, Martin re
checked it again and it's over Willhere sabrus All. For the fourth straight
season. The Wisconsin Badgers are bigeggs heads. This is Wisconsin Volleyballs with
the big bark in the middle.Broke to you by good Month's Jewelers providing

(00:26):
sparkle to medicine since nineteen thirty threeand Wis scottson and pass to the original
semi finals. That's twenty straight winsand ten straight seasons a Sweet sixteen success.
No, here's the voice of Wishsconsin volleyball, John Odious. The
Drive for five starts tonight for theWisconsin Badgers. For each of the last

(00:48):
four seasons, Wisconsin has been ableto capture the Big Ten championship, and
the twenty twenty three conference season startstonight at Northwestern. From Walsh, Ryan
Arena and Evanson, John Audius andJessica Williams with you as Wisconsin, the
number one ranked team in the country, takes on the Wildcats. So what
does the start a Big Ten playmean for head coach Kelly Sheffield and the

(01:08):
Badgers. Here's the head coach,What's the next phase of the season.
It's one that you you certainly geta lot a lot of more excited about
playing playing in this league and andyou know, in your pursuit of a
championship is is always a goal, you know, and you're going to get
tested night in and nine out.We had a we had a great non

(01:32):
conference schedule. I think it wassecond toughest UH non conference schedule in the
country core in RPI, and youknow, and it it gets even more
challenging. I mean, you openup with Northwestern and you know, apparently
they're looking at having a record crowdthis evening, which would if that's the
case, that means that every roadtrip we've been on so far as had

(01:55):
record crowds, which are which arejust great for our teams to be a
part of that. Yeah, Iwas going to ask you what do those
crowds mean because you mentioned the potentialrecord here. Their program record is four
thousand, nineteen. They're going toget close to that. Seven thousand a
night at the field House, seventeenthousand in Milwaukee, forty three hundred Arkansas,
that program record, ten thousand,Florida, that program record. So

(02:16):
what does what do these environments.Do they help the team? Oh,
they have to. You know,it's uh, you know, I think
for a long time we've been gettingeverybody's best shot. But you know when
you walk in and there's a evendifferent buzz and level of excitement from your
front the opposing team because they havea different level of support. Uh,

(02:38):
it's a uh. I mean theycome after you with everything and everybody's and
it's kind of us against the worldmentality that's that they can't that that has
to help a team come together, and it has we have. I'm so
proud of our team of being ableto fight and battle in some really tough
environments. It's been it's been cool. Yeah, they've come through, Like
you know, the seven oh runin front of that crowd at Arkansas,

(03:00):
the five will run against Marquette, the down oh two. They've really responded
in front of those big crowds forsure. Talking with Kelly Sheffield, Big
ten play starts number one Wisconsin atNorthwestern, I want to ask you about
the play of Anna Smex. She'shad back to back matches with season highs
in kills. When she has thattype of success, do you think that
makes teams need to prepare perhaps alittle bit differently had they had she not

(03:24):
had those those impactful matches. I'vesaid, somewhere down the line, she'll
be one of the top five playersin the world, and I think that'll
happen after after she's done with college, but at some point at will and
she's just on the path of that. She's she's starting to figure out the
timing and the rhythm, share handcontact, is getting better connections with the

(03:46):
setters. But she's able to managesituations much better than what she was a
year ago. Yeah, it's ashe's a player that can that can carry
us, and and we're leaning onher and she's she's playing a lot better,
a lot cleaner in bigger moments.Sometimes in the past she'd get kind
of wound up tight and kind ofhad a tendency of maybe airing a little
bit more in those. But she'sgetting a lot more confortable. She has

(04:09):
no fear. That's the other thingI love about her. All Right,
Well, best of luck tonight,Thanks John. That's Wisconsin head coach Kelly
Sheffield. We will get a scoutof the wild Cats coming up next or
listening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented byGoodman's Jewelers, providing Sparkle to Madison for
ninety years. This is Wisconsin Volleyball, brought to you by good Mun's Jewelers,

(04:30):
Madison's Diamond Store, and a wholelot more. I walcome back to
Walsh Ryan Arena number one Wisconsin, opening the Big Ten season taking on the
north Western Wildcats. You know, one thing that Gary talked about in the
weekly press conference was it was kindof good to get on. I guess

(04:50):
what's considered a normal practice schedule thisweek with a Sunday match against Florida and
then Friday here tonight. Does thathelp as you know, as you prepare
for two Big Ten matches, There'sno question it helps. I think.
You know, we've been learning insome pretty high intense pressure moments. You
know, we don't get a practicemuch, especially you know, sixty six

(05:13):
versus each other or working on thingsthat we really want to work on.
Most of the practices leading up tothis point, prior to this week has
just been touches really and getting loose. Let's talk about Northwestern. Alexa Russo
is a very active setter. She'saidtriple doubles in the past. I think
her season high this year as faras kills is seven. What will it
be like to face an active setterlike that. Well, you know,

(05:36):
they cause a lot of stress atthe net for your middles, and when
that happens, there's a trickle effectthat that can create, seems, you
know, in the block and thendefensively, your second line of defense needs
to kind of jump into that. So, you know, I'm excited for
our middles to see how they handlethat and the information and are they getting
hyper, are they getting jump inthe net or are they just cool,

(05:57):
calm, collective and making really goodreads and good moves their offense. I
know San Jacimo likes to, youknow, take a lot of swings to
what is their offense kind of consistof. Well, you know, like
I said, the center creates alot of holes for their attackers, and
she'll go to the go to hitter, and she'll keep going to the go
to hitter, but can move itaround really well. Best of luck tonight,
Thanks John. All right, that'sassociate head coach Brittany Dildne. Keep

(06:20):
it right here when we come back. It's the Badger notebook. It's number
one Wisconsin opening the Big ten againstNorthwestern and you're listening to Wisconsin Badger Volleyball

Badger and notebook number one. Wisconsinstarts the Big Ten season tonight against six
and four Northwestern and the Badgers,of course are four time raining Big Ten
champions, and then the preseason theywere picked to win their fifth straight conference

(07:00):
Big Ten as of late us onan eighteen match Big Ten winning street dating
back to last season and the Badgersall time and season openers twenty five and
sixteen. Now that's eight and eighton the road. Someone to watch tonight
and hopefully throughout the rest of theconference season has been junior Anna Smack,
who's really picked up her play overthe last couple of matches. In wins

(07:24):
for the Badgers against Marquette and Floridaand Big Time Environment, she averaged a
team best three point four kills perset while hitting three forty nine almost a
block per sette as well and pointseven eight gigs percepts. She's coming off
sixteen kills at Florida. That's aseason high for her keeper. Right here,
when we come back, we willhave the starting line ups in the

(07:44):
opening serve. It's Tom Frank Wisconsinstarting the Big ten season on the road
at Northwestern. We're listening to WisconsinBadger Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers, providing

point nine kills percette with a threethirty six attack percentage is the Ashburn will

(09:13):
start at center final eleven grad transferSammy Thomas eilar I'm making a homecoming,
a six two grad transfer from Northwestern, played in her first match at Walsh
Shrine Arena since coming to Wisconsin.Sarah Franklin, at six foot four senior,
leads the Badgers at three point sevenkills per set. Carter Booth six
foot seven middle software four thirty nine. Her hitting percentage for Wisconsin and Julio

(09:37):
osjo Is Labero, a six footjunior at three point four dicks percet.
She's from Olston pulland you might remembershe played her high school volleyball at Lead
so over Knocks dot Ton Sami Scorswisssportabaco in Stone Jettay. So here we
go, No, Jessica Williams andI. We're having some technical issues.
So it's just gonna be the flyingsolo with you between the Badger and the

(10:00):
north Western Wildcats. So both teamsnow onto the court. We were bout
ready to start with the big tenopener and Northwestern will be serving. They'll
sell, They'll send Ellie Stinson backbehind the line. Five to junior at
sixteen aces last season, she hasfourteen heading into this Northwestern's eleventh match of

(10:28):
the season. Badgers casting Rio Tammyon the left back. Little back will
be Franklin. Right back is OJoe, and we're about ready to get
underway with this big ten opener. This dart at twenty twenty three campaign Franklin
targeted on that first serve out assistantWisconsin bump sets to the left roll shop

(10:50):
by Timmy Stintson with the dig tothe right side a big shot of high
off the badger block that was RandorphWisconsin, gathers it and goes to Robinson
from the right, who gets thekill. Robinson goes cross court and drops
down the kill for the u Wto start in this first set. Two
point nine kills percette for Robinson thisseason. She was a third team All

(11:13):
American last year and she's a preseasonthe All Big Ten selection this year.
Demi Thomas Ailara came in to serve. The fans the student section voice their
displeasure with the former Wildcat back there. But then at the last second,
Coach Sheffield brought in bul Jay Gutschickento serve. And that's what she'll be
doing right now. Left or rightfor the matchers. Serves in the middle

(11:35):
of the end line to the rightback at Randorph out assistant Russell scrambling with
a high platform set to the leftand the shot by san Jacomo goes wide
cross court error by san Jacomo. She's a transfer from Santa Clara, where
she averaged four point two kills percettelast season. So here's gig ready to

(11:58):
serve. Throws it over to theright back on the run again is Russo
another good serve right side attack goesdown the line. I want to say
by Oja for a second that theyhave enough to get it over. No,
Franklin tried to backwards bumpets standing outof bounds on the left sideline.
They rolled the top of the netfor a second before a falls down.
And that is Northwestern's first point hereof the first set. Two one lead

(12:20):
for the number one ranked Wi Scottsand Badgers trying not only for a ten
and oh start, but one andoh start in big ten play. And
here we go the jump float bythe Cats and the Badgers go down the
line for Robinson for bangs won wide. Navarette is serving Gigi. Navarette,

(12:45):
the first year player, has oneace this season. Navarette puts it in
play again, this time at Gigion the run Asburn bumps at left side.
Franklin goes and gets it and it'sdug back row by right now in
Northwestern plays the San Jacomo deep shot. Ojo picks it up for the Badgers.
Franklin rolls it into the block grabbedby Northwestern in the backcourt. Russel

(13:05):
back set right side and it's offthe head and down county for Johnson.
The sixth one senior. This isa transfer from b y U getting the
kill for Northwestern. Now three twoWildcats on top of the Badgers in the
first set. Another good to servethat one at gg on the run again,

(13:30):
bump set over to Franklin. Bigpounced incident gobbles it up defensively out
to the left and it's pushed bySan Jacobo. But a double contact called
on that set by Russels, SoLa Ojoe well step back to serve for
the Badgers. Not only is UHsome technical difficulties on the broadcast, the

(13:56):
stats aren't working either. Right nowleft side shot right at Franklin. She
did exit at the left side. Here's Robinson with a push steepened down,
pushes it for the middle back andthere's Robinson bailin up the Badgers, giving
Wisconsin a four to three lead herein the first set. So that is
the second kill for the Badgers asa team. Northwestern sitting on one kill

(14:18):
served by O Joe goes long.Great crowd here at Wells Shrine of Arena.
Everywhere the Badgers go they seem todraw crowds, including here in Evanson,
where where it was before the startof the match. They had about
three thousand tickets sold, not countingthe student section, and there's two student
sections on either end. Line haveshown up here in all white. Perfect

(14:43):
pass of the pocket and the setgoes to Franklin, and there is Sarah
with a cross court kill for theu W Badgers leading attacker this season.
Franklin at three point seven kills percentgives Wisconsin a five four lead here in
the first Now MJ Hamill steps behindthe line for the Badgers. Want of
the two Badger's setters in the sixtwo offense, She'll serve from zone one

(15:09):
one point lead for the u Wtoss into the air. MJ goes to
the right back download of grab iton serve receive was saying Jocobal. Here's
a shot on the left side thatwas by Chin. Badger's fine Franklin,
she'll go cross court. Stinson hasthe dig for Northwestern Russue Russo sets to
Dodson rather say by MJ. Thenthere is Anna Spreck from the right side,

(15:31):
just clipping the end to the blockand getting it fall six to four.
After the kill by Spreck, wholast week average three point four kills
per set for the Badgers had fifteenkills Wednesday against Mark Katt followed it up
with sixteen in the Badger's victory againstFlorida. Here's MJ putting it in play

(15:54):
to the back row. Northwestern willset to the right side. That's a
Dodson into the Badger's block can stopped. Now Northwestern near the neat pushes at
Smreck stops it back to the Cat'sleft side. A shot by Chin cross
Court is dug over to Franklin forWisconsin down the line. Save Russell settered
up Gig waiting for it, savesit inside the ten foot line. Smreck

(16:15):
winds up at us. Smrecks backfalls from the right side. There is
anna recording for second kill of thisfirst set, and it's the Badgers on
top by three and it's seven four. The u W Camma serving again from

(16:37):
zone one to the back row. That one's grabbed by Navarette and then a
middle attack falls for Northwestern shock ofAle with the kill seven five, the

(17:00):
Badger's lead is down to two, which tech and nails the past to Hamil
didn't even move and then smreck aggressiveswing towards the corner is deep. It's
a hitting error from Smreck in Wisconsin'slead, which was at three, is

(17:22):
now down to a single point.Great high pass from Gig again, Hamil
doesn't move right side to Crawford, finds a hole in the block, but
it's Doug back Row. San Jacomooff the Badger block and she got it
again. Julia san Shockomo. Sevenof eight matches she's played this season has
resulted in double figures and kills, and that ties the first set at seven

(17:45):
apiece. San Jacomo now with twokills to pace Northwest or another great pass
time by Gigi, It'll attack.Smreck bangs off the net, saved in
the middle by Northwestern, big swingby Hill, Wisconsin retrieves and it's bounced
down sharp cross court by Sarah Franklin. Franklin gives the Badgers a one point

(18:06):
lead eight seven Wisconsin here in thefirst So if Franklin steps in front of
the student section of Northwestern, cossinto the yea err ino the middle of
the next error serving from Franklin, and once again we are even at eight.

(18:32):
The Badger's offense off to six kills, two hitting errors, Northwestern three
kills and an error. There comesthe Badgers. Hamil set up back Row
and Franklin gets it, so sheflies in from the right back, tags
and Jacomo in the back row andgrabs the kill for Wisconsin. Franklin last

(18:57):
season, three and a half killspercent led the team. She's at three
point seven this season. Her hittingpercentage so far through the first time match
is about thirty points higher than lastyear. Here is the serve by cc
over pass six foot seven Carter Boothright there, uses two hands and slams
it right down in the center ofthe end. Booth gets her first kill

(19:26):
ten eights Franklin or excuse me,that's Crawford rather serving. Here's the right
side reachs by chin stop by Booth. Back to Northwestern. How about the
left side pounds in good by Randera second leading attacker for a Northwestern this
season. It's Katherine Randorph. She'spart of the All Big Ten freshman team
last season when she averaged about thesame amount of kills about two and a

(19:51):
half pulls Northwestern to within one katsserving right to left. That's right with
the serve, Wiscotsin throws it tothe left side. It's Tammy Thomas Ei
Lara comes through with the kill.First kill for Tammy here today, making
her return, of course, toNorthwestern where she recorded over fifteen hundred kills

(20:17):
as a wildcat. Now here's ZziAskurn, Wisconsin's all time leader in service
aces four career, serving to right. Russo chases settings and Jockomo grabbed bio
jo bumps head over to Thomas Sailarawho got rid. Kennedy Hill all over

(20:37):
that one with her teammate Randolph, but it was Hill who got the majority
of that shot. According to ShaneDavid, their coach, it brings high
energy and she showed that right thereafter the block of Thomas Eilara, Wisconsin
leads by one. First set. Here is Stinson served to the left,
back at Thomas Eilara, Wisconsin runsto the right and Robinson rocks it down.

(21:00):
There is Devin recording her team bestthird kill. She and Franklin each
have three kills and Wisconsin has atwelve to ten lead. So gooul Ja
goots. Techen comes in to serveagain and for Tammy Thomas and gig steps
behind the line, serving from themiddle of the end line left hand over

(21:27):
passed, shanked off to the left, chased down by Roussel bump set San
Jackimo touches the Badger block. Boothtries to give it a little shove back
as it came back to Wisconsin, and then she'll shove it down with the
right hand. So there's Carter Boothpicking up her second kill, giving her
team a three point lead. Fiveties. Two lead changes in this first

(21:49):
set. Badger's backup, matching theirlargest lead of the set. Here is
Gigi's serve. It's gonna be anace off Stinson to the right back and
a scoots tech In leaps into thearms of Issy Asburg, and the Badgers
have built themselves a four point lead. Here at Welsh Ryan Arena, three

(22:11):
nothings scoring run to five out Northwestern. It's the Badger's fourteen the Wildcats ten

(22:38):
in Russian Arena, Jodius with youbroteen ten three nothing scoring run for the
Badgers, or goes again at Stintsonand Northwestern's on the run and overpass.
There come the Badger's Ashburg over toFranklin left side, so cross courts get
that Crossport killed killed by Franklin andit's a fifteen to teners lead, largest

(23:00):
lead of the first set for theBadgers. Who's check in goes deep mine
drive pass and Shackamo gets rejected. On the left, it's Booth and Robinson
teaming up for a big Bucky blocksixteen ten, largest lead of the match.

(23:22):
It's now a five nothing run byWisconsin. Here comes gig Short serves
Stinson fields it decent passed up front, and a Booth and solo block in
the middle. As she got allthat Dodson delivery, a booth block had

(23:48):
another time out by Northwestern Wisconsin startingto pile on the points. It's a

That was Dodson dig Wisconsin left side. Franklin. Stinson popped it up and
then it falls another point. TheBadgers are racing here in the first set,

(24:36):
now seventeen ten, make it eighteento ten. U W hitting three
ninety one, Northwestern four kills, four errors. They're hitting zero. The
Badgers also with three blocks so farin the first gigs serving back row,
decent pass. Russo setting right side, batted off assword and that is Randorf

(25:00):
with the kill stops to seven nothingrun. So here's Randorp for Northwestern to
serve. There comes to jump topspin handled by Goods tech in a spinning

(25:21):
pass goes to Ashburn who sets tothe left pin a roll shop by Franklin
sliding in Stinson with the stop backrow that was right now Wisconsin finds Robinson
goes high over the block, raisesthe scoreboard. Joust at the net point
Wisconsin, and I think they're gonnasay since it well, I would have
dropped either way whether it touch thescoreboard came over. Robinson got it.

(25:42):
That should be Wisconsin's point or whetherRobinson just dropped it down and they didn't
say that that scoreboard was touched ornot point Wisconsin, nineteen to eleven.
O Joe floats one to the backrow, perfect pass, Russo sets to
the left side, show by sanJacimo, popped up by Ashburn, a

(26:03):
punch over by Franklin, and Northwesternretrieves it right side. Dotson bangs it
through the block Asburn in the backrow has the dig right side. Robinson
rolls off the top of the block, diving saved now shot by Russel,
kept off the floor by the Badgers, and a whistle and a double contact
called against Wisconsin. Ashburn and Robinsonwere both trying to take that third ball

(26:30):
and they kind of collided and theremust have been something there. That's that
is where the error occurred. Nineteentwelve. Wisconsin Badgers have led by as
many as eight in the first servedby Hernandez tight pass, ashburns to bump

(26:51):
set it and falling backwards. Adownball sent over by Franklin and then popped
down the left sideline, getting thekill as Ailanie Dotson, a middle blocker
and a transfer from b YU lastseason at Northwestern. He had over three
hundred this year. She's sitting overfour forty six point deficit. Now for

(27:12):
the Wildcats, here comes to serveagain. Good's techn serve receive Ashburn I
set to the left, Frank willit a pound it got pit ball around
and it's back to the matchers anda free ball Robinson into the block,
popped up by Devin. Crawford willbackset it over to Northwestern. A turn
by Rousseau and it goes deep. She was looking for the near side corner

(27:33):
man did she turned on that quickly, but it was hit out of bounds
point Wisconsin twenty to thirteen m Jto Sir Hammel for Wisconsin left or right.

(28:02):
Here comes Northwestern. Russell flings itoff the left and there's another Bucky
block, number four of the set, rejecting the shot of Chin on the
outside. Another big Badger's block.Wisconsin enters play tonight, fifth in the
conference at two point seven blocks perset. As a team. Crawford and

(28:23):
Spreck get a block assist each onthat one. Camel powers one to the
back row a great past to Russellright side, Dotson pumps it down.
Dotson now with a team best threekills for Northwestern. Twenty one fourteen.

(28:52):
Wisconsin has the lead over Northwestern. They've led by as many as eight.
Right now it's at seven and into serve is Lauren Carter transfer from Denver
out did Gg great high pass toHamilt, didn't even have to move right
side. Crawford goes down the line, hops it off the Navarettes and it's
a kill. Maybe Wansinka killing bigCats, didn't think of Badgers. Crawford

(29:19):
grabs the Badger's fourteenth kill as ateam and it pulls the u W to
within three of the first set victory. Twenty two fourteen Wisconsin. Here's frank
hours a deep. Northwestern attacks fromthe left off Franklin over and our Maddie

(29:45):
Chin gets the kill. Thought twoand a half kills per set this season
for the Wildcats twenty two fifteen Wisconsin. Thomas Lara left back, middle back
Ojo right back is Franklin Osho callSport delivers a great pasta Hamill tip in
the middle by Spreck Northwestern underneath it. There comes Chin on take off looking

(30:08):
for high hands and hits it out. No got the touch. A touch
call about front against the Badger blockand no disagreement from Badger's coach Kelly Sheffield.
Twenty two to sixteen, Northwestern trailingby six. Carter the lefty,

(30:30):

a kill for Timmy polls Wisconsin twowithin two points of the first set win.
Here's Carter chuck at CC Brusso tothe middle, big shot saved by

(30:55):
Wisconsin and back over on a freeball to the right chin off the Badger
block and it's good. Twenty threeseventeen Wisconsin and the first and here comes

(31:19):
Northwestern the serve that's right, sprawlingout service Franklin middle attacked by Booth.
Good, Carter connects and it's setpoint in the first for the Badgers.

(31:45):
Astern will be serving on set pointtwenty four seventeen and it'll be pinballed then
picked up on the left side attackand it's actually gonna work. It works
for Hernandez on the left for Northwestern. After I got pinned, Baald then
popped up to the pin and Hernandezbails out. Northwestern Wildcats fight off that

(32:07):
first set point. There comes stintsin pounding it to the left back at
Thomas Ai Lara saved by booth bumpset back to Tammy. She'll tip it
over the Northwestern with the dig ibump set tight to the pin on the

(33:13):
ends up getting four hundred seventeen kills, three hitting errors four the Bachers Northwestern
eleven kills, six errors, theyhit one forty three. The Bacher's defense
also provided four blocks in that firstset. But I have a close start.

(33:36):
Wisconsin, led by as many aseight one. We're almost ready for
the second step. Here this damein the two things leading attackers sale of
sprinklet. She has five kills forWisconsin, Ship and Dodson rand Or each

(34:02):
with three kills and one hitting errorfor Northwestern. Vin Robinson I should mentioned
as well. Four kills and twoblocks to the batchers and a very productive
first step for her. Here weregoing second set, ready to get underway
with is the asper and Serbian rightto left for the banterers. Put pass

(34:28):
into the air and said it wayout about service error by Ashburn. There's
Dodson, so put it over Wisconsinthat's to the middle. That's Booth rattles

(34:51):

San Jacomo and it's kept off theground by Ojo. Now Thomas ILR with
a soft hippy reasily handled by Dotsto Northwestern to the left side on her

There is Roussel turning on the line. It goes back Franklin on the
right sidelock and down that one mighthave been close to heading out a bound

(35:37):
Franklin decided to play it anyway, and now here comes Dotson going out.
Franklin sticks the pass to Ashburn alumnusslider Robbins and so pushed it off the
block for a kill. Devin deliversanother. She's having a very very productive
start to this man sets her fifthkill its Dotson trails two one to Northwestern.

(36:01):
First set with the Badger's way twentyfive to eighteen we teken lines one
over great serve but a great pathand then the left side attack is down
by Jim. She wills cross courtsas she breezes the Badger's defenders for the

(36:23):
kills three one. Northwestern opening theirsecond set rather Rousseau with the serve left
side to Franklin. Yes, crossfor it to the far sideline and down.

(36:45):
So Franklin's up to six kills. So she continues to search for double
figures tonight, and she as wellwith Laban, both often really hot starts
offensively for the Badgers. Wisconsin Trailshighest single point second set, Russell for
Northwestern off to the left side, the end of the Badger block. Randorf

(37:07):
picked up now from the right side, Badgers grab it again. Robinson from
the right Nett moving net violation.Northwestern points to Wisconsin. Yeah. Back
to Sarah Franklin. She's all fordouble figures every match this season except for
one. Didn't quite get there inthree sets against Miami when she finished with

(37:29):
nine kills. But she's been ona chair ever since that exhibition match in
you know, mid to late August. Northwestern on the run Rousseau, I
bumps that rolls shot over by ChinWisconsin underneath it right side, Robinson pushed
back a coboard and now a setgoes over. The next the Badgers find

(37:51):
that I think that were Raspurn obviously, and then appointed with scotsin on a
hitting error by Northwestern. Four orthree. The Badgers on top second set

(38:12):
on the ron rooster with the bumpstackRandolph left side is that Badger blocking its
down block number five tonight for Wisconsinfive three. The Badgers lead in the

(38:37):
second serve off the top of thetape. That was oh joe, middle
attack and it's gonna drop off thetop of the net and out of bound
flick. Time out by head coachShane Davis, who likes to stand right
in front of me what I tryto call the match, so we'll have
fun here five not being run bythe Badgers. Time out Northwestern. It

(39:01):
is sixty three with Jonson in thesecond. The Badgers grede one sect and

set number two, it's six threeWisconsin. Here we go after the time
out and ace served up by theBadgers. Counted for O Joe, who's
been really, really solid behind theservice line for the Badgers over the last

(39:50):
few matches. At three aces inthat Badger's victory against Marquette, here comes
you'll be up toss into the airfires another one. That one at San
Jackomo over Aston. Robinson cranks itdown and Julia is doing a number right
now behind the service line that comesto Joe and an ace for Julia,

(40:20):
A sing San Jacima on the leftback. It's an eight nothing Badger's run.
Ojoe dealing this one has him outof system. To the left side,
Randolph down the line, grabbed byAshburn, chased down by Ojoe,

(40:42):
swing by Franklin, tapped off thefloor by Northwestern, right side chin popped
up by Gg. Franklin pokes onesharp cross court Doug. Now it's a
miscommunication and Northwestern can't get it overon the third ball and it's another point
for Wisconsin. How about a nineold run. Everything is working for the

(41:04):
Badgers right now, Julia Ojo ona serving run until that one that goes

received. Now Wisconsin's on the run. Bump said, you la to Franklin
into the block and it's covered. How the Badger's start of the right side.
Robinson into the block and it's covered. It is Crawford bumping it over

(41:49):
backwards. It's back to Northwestern.A tip on the left side. It
goes deep. Might have been sayingJack elmo, I think it was on
the left points to Wisconsin. It'san eleven to four Badger's leads overall in
nine one scoring run and awaiting toserve. Here comes Asper or excuse me,

(42:31):
hammil rather pass off to the rightsideline, a bump sat back to
the left and saying, JOCKO,all that was from Randorph Wisconsin. Underneath
it left side, Franklin hits theline judge and that is out. It's
the line judges foot on the northwesternside. Eleven five. Here's Stintson to

(42:59):
serve that wants a deep shot.Notes first service error of the night for
the Wildcats. Franklin rotates back toserve for the Badgers. Seven point Wisconsin

(43:20):
lead stack left unserved received Northwestern.Franklin serve goes at Stintson passed backwards so
they have enough to chase it down. They do, and then stints into
the backwards belt for the three ballto Wisconsin right side Smart takes a big
hack over pass and it's deep anddown for Timmy Thomas a Lara taking care
of that over date kind north Western. It's a thirteen to five Badger's lead

oh show with the dig saved endline. Franklin Tammy high tip. Here
comes the Wildcats over the left side, saying Jock Himo off the block left
can save. Oh Joe pops itup, holler free ball back to Northwestern

(45:00):
in it falls, free ball killby the Badgers, double checking to see
who had that free ball once again. Like I said, Shane Davis likes
to uh, he's the head coachof Northwestern. He's got a spot right
in front of me. We'll getdown the stats. Get to the stats.

(45:22):
There was smrek okay Anna gets akill on a free ball. Brussel
middle attack sets the dots in.Who gets it to the far side corner
stops the quick three nothing run bythe u W Badgers had a nine oh
run earlier in the set. Goesto Ojoe left side, Thomas eilar a

(45:55):
cross court and Russo swings Tammy waitingfor it. Pushed back. Northwestern shops
it over freeball. Wisconsin hammel overto Crawford roll shot. Does it touch
the floor, Yes, it does. SIT's in wanting The Pancakes say,
won't get it, point to Wisconsinboyer. There comes Jocelyn Bowyer to serve.

(46:34):
Bowyer in as a serving specialist forthe Badgers, fires a nasty one
to the back row for an aceright at Stinson and her teammate navarettes kind
of probably deflected deflected off one ofthem. Couldn't tell exactly who, but
they were both right there. Secondace of the season for Bowyer, and

(46:57):
it's an ace followed up by anerror, so Boyer gets the ace,
then throws one for the error rightinto the next sixteen seven Dgers trying to
go up two sets and none. They stick around for our intermission interview,

(47:21):
which we'll get to the proper placeso you can hear it. Here's Hannah
Spreck on the right side with thekill. Y Spreck with another kill,
and she is up to four tenpoint. Badger's leading by the way by

(47:52):

left pin, high tipped chin slidingin expert has the stop, Robinson tracks
it down, sends a deep shotto the corner where it's dug by Northwestern
chin over on the left pin goeshigh off the bag. Badger blockers fingers

(48:12):
now Booth gets a big swing anda booth bomb connects Wisconsin eighteen Northwestern seven

(48:35):
and this one has Northwestern oudo system. Chin shoves it over free ball.
Wisconsin goes to Robinson on the right, off speed shot dug by the Cat's
Chin flies one over Badger's habit boothwith another big shot and it's good pretty
long rally there four that's Chin onthe left side, Badger's dig it over

(49:17):

(49:45):
back row right at navarettes. Northwesterngoes to Chin off speed, Frank Lynn
gets it up, blots Ashburn tobooth and Boot bounces it down to the
kill. I'm about bube nothing runnow by the Badgers twenty one to seven
Wisconsin and the number one team inthe country seeking it to Northwestern. Here

(50:14):
on a road matchup to start theBig ten season. As these fans have
really filed into Northwestern, this hasto be a program record. I would
think booth on an overpass, butit's doug by Northwestern and then their free
ball goes into the net. Twentytwo to seven Wisconsin. It's crowd here

(50:43):
really waiting to get going, butthey haven't had much to get going.
Badgers won the first set twenty fiveeight team led by as many as ten.
Here's a nasty serve that's gonna falldown for an ace? Is he
s Bird with another ace? Ishould say another in her career? It's
or first of the match. Ojohas two Goodstecken has one. Ashburn now

(51:10):
has one, so fire it init. Stinson on the middle back,
new setter in for Northwestern over toChin Carter with the set now, Thomas
Eilara rolls a shot doug by Stinsonshoved over by Chin. Tammy saves it
up front at the net. It'sbooth and it's doug By Northwestern saying Jacomo

(51:31):
flops one over from the back row. Ojo, right there, I bumps
that over to the left. ThomasIlara got blocked. Second block of the
match for Northwestern, but Wisconsin's takenit to the Wildcats. Right now,
Badgers have gone twelve straights in thisseries against Northwestern, twelve in a row,

(51:52):
and right now they are a coupleof points away from going up two
sets to none overall. A sixone scoring run by the Badgers. That
serve flips the top of the tapeby Dodson. Thomas Eilar goes cross court
from the left dog Northwestern over toChin, touches the block and save.
Now Tammy pops it up, shovedover by Devin. Here comes Northwestern Carter

(52:13):
setting left side. Chin pushed backWisconsin. Try the setter dunk that's off
the hands of Booth picked up andfor a moment before Wisconsin couldn't he haveble
the third ball off Franklin. Sothe new setter transfer from Denver Lauren Carter.
She's a sophomore. She's played intwenty one sets this season. Dodson

(52:45):
back row four days, Dotson acesWisconsin. Let's see who that was awkward.
Let's see gets credited for the receptionerror. That was Tammy Tammy Thomas

(53:06):
Ai Laura Here is Tammy, leftside blocks covered by Wisconsin a couple of
times, says aspern have enough tochase it down. She got there,
but didn't have enough to bring itback. She was about fifteen feet past
the end line trying to race andchase that one down. Twenty three to
eleven. Northwestern's on a four nothingrock serve Dodson out right past the end

(53:40):
line and it's set point for theBadgers. Here in the second twenty four
to eleven. Here's Goood's techn toserve on set point in the second into

(54:07):

and that's Devin's eighth kill of thematch. Twenty five to twelve.
Wisconsin rolls by Northwestern in the secondset, and after break the Badgers lead
the Wildcats two sets to none.Coming up on our intermission report, we'll

(54:55):
hear from Wisconsin's Timmy Thomas Eiler.I'm making a homecoming back here in Evanston.
That comes your way. Next, you're listening to Wisconsin Vancher Volleyball presented

(55:16):
Network. This is Vacher Volleyball. He is time for your Vcher Volleyball intermission
reports Here is the volleys of BacherVolleyball John Odious at wils Shrine Arena.

(55:36):
The Vanchers lead Northwestern two sets toone, twenty five eighteen and twenty five
twelve. Time for tonight's intermission interviewer. Earlier today, I caught up with
Timmy Thomas Ailara, who of coursespent four seasons here as a Northwestern Wildcat.
So I asked her what it's likefor her to come back and face
for former school. It's cool,it's exciting. I'm excited to be in

(55:59):
our question again, play in WellsShane Arena and see everyone. The team
is off to a great start throughthe non conference. Big tem play obviously
is here nine and oh got therewith that huge win Sunday against Florida.
What has allowed this team to beable to start undefeated? I think in
those hard moments, we kind ofcome together as a team and we just

(56:20):
pushed through together, and we staytogether throughout those hard times. I think
having that kind of base of knowingthat we're all in this together, we
can push through things if we keepfighting as a team has helped us pull
through in those hard moments and thoseresults. I mean, that's got to
give the team confidence. You know, you can look back at the seven
old run to end one of thesets against Arkansas five own a very pivotal

(56:42):
set against Marquette of course down ohtwo to Florida. Does that just give
the team more confidence when those thingsactually come through with success. Definitely.
It gives us more confidence through thosehard times and also shows us who we
can be if we stick together. All right, rapid fire time Talking with
Timmy Thomas Ailara here at the what'syour favorite part about Madison so far?

(57:02):
Oh? I think the food.I've had a lot of good restaurants.
Yeah. What do you like mostabout this team? I like how through
the hard we just stay together andwe know that we're all in all in
it together. Who's your favorite athlete? M I was a big Kobe Bryant

(57:22):
fan. I think he showed hardwork in such a cool way and inspired
me a lot. Thanks Tammy.Welcome Sammy Thomas Lara here at the breakback
with more After this, you're listeningto Wisconsin Badger Volleyball presented by Goodman's Jewelers,
providing Sparkle to Madison for ninety years. Brought to you by good Month's
Jewelers providing sparkled to Madison since nineteenthirty three. Falling into you, I

(57:53):
walk the back courtside at Walsh RyanArena, John Adius with you. It's
the Badger's lead to s stan Onover the Northwestern wildcasts. Take a look
at the intermission stats w hitting threethirty three so far through the first two
sets, Northwestern o sixty two. They had a minus attack percentage in that

(58:15):
second set minus sixty seven. Fourkills from Robinson in the second and the
stats leaders look like this, fourNorthwestern four kills eats for Chinon Dotson to
four Wisconsin Robinson splitting those eight killsevenly through the first two sets. That
it's six kills from Franklin with Fourtiggssitting two sixty three. Carter Booth has

(58:39):
six kills off eight attack attempts withno hitting errors. Also has shipped in
with three blocks, macys four onehitting error. Over All, the Badgers
as a team have six hitting errorswith twenty nine kills and a little bit

(59:05):
of a delay here to start thesecond set. You know, I was
watching head coach. I'm not sureif they are. They're checking the rotations
and looks like right now. KellySheffield before the set started, was just
focused in on the Northwestern side asthey were coming out to the court.

(59:28):
As soon as they did, hetalked to his setter, is He Ashburn.
Ashburn sprinted over to the up officialand now that communication has gone to
the down official. We talked toShane Davis, the Northwestern coach, and
now it looks like they're checking thelineup, and it looks like they're taking

(59:57):
Ellie Hughesman, who was into thematch in Kennedy Hill. Middle lockers suck
for each other, so they're justgonna check the Badger's lineup. Looks like
we're ready to go for that.We should be all set, two sets

(01:00:21):
and un lead for the number oneranked Badgers as they look for a ten
to no start to the season. And it's a little bit of confusion as
Northwestern is ready to serve and nowthey're giving it back to Wisconsin. I

(01:00:45):
could have gone longer with my Sammyinterview. Let's like the stats reset.
Fantastic to the refresh button. Benice to see those kay slow start to

(01:01:16):
the third set here for everyone involved, Now it looks like we're finally ready

(01:01:37):
all right here we go who's checkingback to serve three passers in the backcourt
for Northwestern, and the Badgers geta point. I think I'm on that
rotation by Northwestern, and so it'sa one nothing start for Wisconsin. To
start the third here's Franklin popping itdeep and down. It's a two nothing

(01:01:58):
start for Wisconsin. So the Bacher'shead coach gets them an easy point right
away, and now Goods Teckn goesdown the line. Northwestern grabs it tipp

(01:02:19):
in the middle by Hill. Herecomes Wisconsin. Booth pushes in the middle
of its south. So Northwestern isout of rotation to start the third set,
and the Bacher's got a point becauseof it, and it's now three
nothing. Franklin gets a killed tomake it too nothing. Bacher's tack on

(01:02:40):
another one. Here's Good's techon servedto the back row leaning forward on serve
received was the Northwestern player overpass offof Ashburn back to the Cats middle attack,
and it's good By Hill first pointof the third set to northwesterns Kennedy
Hill three one start in the thirdthe Badgers are looking for the sweep tonight

(01:03:08):
and trying to start the Big Tenseason. One and all off the platform
of Ojo chased down by Robinson, pass the end line and now a backwards
bumping a free ball by Booth. Here comes Northwestern Rousseau setting high tipp into
the net by Randorph, doesn't crossthe top of the tape and over,
so it's a hitting error by Randorph. Here's Joe who had a great serving

(01:03:34):
run for the Badgers in the secondshe has two aces ten digs tonight for
the Badgers Lebert Oh and she goesinto the net so right as I was
given her credit for that serving, that one's a surface error by Ojoe.
Navarette will come in to serve forNorthwestern. Goes at O Joe Ashburn quick

(01:04:09):
set the Crawford and crossbody and downCaroline Crawford to the far side corner with
the kill. Hamil will serve anda five two Wisconsin lead in set number

(01:04:31):

right back out of system Northwestern andit'll be a free ball sent over by
Novarettes Wisconsin over to sprint gunner righthas to reach for it didn't clear the
net. It was set really outsideand surrected all she could to try to

(01:04:55):
bring it back and over five three. Wisconsin leading in the third three Badger
passers waiting. The server goes atFranklin past goes straight up into the air,

(01:05:18):
off the serve by her Nandez leftside over to Franklin again. Sinson
has the dig for Northwestern. They'llsend it to the right side shot by
Dotson, saved by Wisconsin. Franklinwatches this set, goes into the block,
pushed back jails pushed over by Franklin. Northwestern goes to San Jacomo,
who tools the block on the nearside, saying Jacomo gets it to fall.

(01:05:43):
Northwestern cuts the lead down to one. SIRV goes to Gigi, sticks
the path to Hammle middle attack toSmereck, She'll drop it over. Smereck
records your fifth kill of this match. Good pass by gg to get that

(01:06:10):
offense for the Badger's rolling and nowSarah Franklin will serve for the u W
up six four and the third becomesfrank going deep to the near side corner
over pass. Smreck tries to shouserThrousseau pushed back by the Northwestern center.

(01:06:31):
Now free ball back to the Wildcats. Russel center dump. Saving it is
Hammel in the middle back Thomas Eilaragoes up and over the block to the
far side corner save Northwestern Dotson Hammelwith another dig as she falls to the
ground right side, Smreck gets itoff the defense and down into the stands.
Count off for Smreck off the platformof novarettes on the right back,

(01:06:55):
and Anna Spreck records her sixth kill. The Badgers had built themselves at three
point cushion. Here in the thirdlooking for the sweep of the Wildcats,
here's Sarah Franklin. Frank spins theball in her left hand, toss into
the air, delivers it right intothe floor portion of the net course serving

(01:07:16):
error service error by Franklin seven five, and that is the eighth error by
the Badgers overall as a team, they do have five aases. Serve goes
wide by Northwestern. Actually I thinkit hit the pin at the next Here's

(01:07:45):
Crawford eight five lead CC good serveover past joust whistle point Wisconsin back row

was very bountiful here at well ShrineArena, has decided that's enough. We're
gonna leave. Here's Damrell as yourfreshman goes to the near side corner over
pass Booth met at the net byRussell. Back to Wisconsin. Thomas A.

(01:18:19):
Laura up and over the block.Stinson diving dig back row pushed back
by Booth, and then Russell attackedclobers it off of Hamble for the kill.

(01:18:45):
Twenty two to twelve, Sir waylong and now Northwestern starting to file
up the service eras. That's justthey're six though it's not a lot on

(01:19:05):
the stat sheet, but it's enoughto start to notice. Twenty three to
twelve, though time out Wisconsin, all right, we'll keep it right here
on this time out with the Badgerstwo points away from this big ten victory
here tonight and what has been prettyeasy and in control for the Badgers against

(01:19:28):
Northwestern. First set saw the Badgersstretch out a close match at eleven ten
by going on a seven nothing run. We're not look back after that hit
over or hit four hundred, Ishould say, and they want it.
Twenty five eighteen second set, Badgersusing a nine oh run behind the line

(01:19:50):
thanks to Julia O show help openup that match. Four kills by Robinson
in the second the Badger's cruise bythirteen and even in the third set,
Wisconsin started off with Northwestern being calledout of rotation. Let's giving the Badger
of a quick one not being startand now four fifty attack percentage in the

(01:20:15):
set, Northwestern hitting O eighty sevenand everything is falling for the Badgers.
Eleven kills from Devin Robinson leads Wisconsin, thirteen digs Asburn the leader in that
category, six blocks booth two aceso jhow and seventeen assists aspurn your team

(01:20:45):
leaders so far with Wisconsin needing twopoints, but a victory tonight Asburn floats
a deep I'm so Northwestern cartered inet center now to saying Jackomo, it's
why no, it's in thought theline on the right sideline. Wisconsin decided

(01:21:08):
to let it fly, saying Jackomogets just her fourth kill of the match.
She came into tonight averaging three anda half kills every set. She's
got four total. We're in thethird. Here's right serving at Reid pops
it pass on a good one dayHamil slide Booth got the touch. Nope,

(01:21:32):
yes she did, and it's MAT'spoint. In Evanston twenty four thirteen,
Wisconsin and Timmy Thomas II Lara willserve for the first time tonight,
playing against her former school. Timmytoss high into the air, fires it

(01:22:20):
former team with the jump top finto the back row and in for an

(01:23:06):
Coast match show underway, John Odiouswith you as the Badgers able to beat
Northwestern here tonight in three sets atWelsh Ryan Arena in front of a record
setting crowd for the Northwestern Wildcats, four thousand, eight hundred was the final
number. Four thousand, eight hundredeighty nine final number of fans of program

(01:23:30):
record for the Wildcats. As they'reable to take on Wisconsin here tonight,
Let's take a look at how everythingwent down. Badgers able in that first
set to go on a seven ohrun which kind of separated the two teams.
Got it to eighteen to ten.Badgers hit four hundred in that match,

(01:23:55):
one to forty three for Northwestern twentyfive. I've eighteen in the second
set. Batcher's cruise twenty five totwelve thanks to the serving of Jolie Oshoe
and Batchler's cruising the third twenty fiveto thirteen. I joined with one of
the stars of today's match, DevinRobinson. Eleven kills, you hit five
fifty six. What was working foryou and your teammates out there the most?

(01:24:19):
I feel like our first contact wasjust really good. We just kind
of stayed steady the whole time. And I don't know, he had all
the trusts in the world to me. So I gotta ask you about the
end of this one. Because coachSheffield leads your teammate Timmy Thomas Ailar and
and of course she hadn't served allmatch. What was it like to see
her get that final ace to endagainst her former team. I feel like
we all knew it was gonna happen. You know, it was just the

(01:24:40):
only only right way to end thismatch. You know, Timmy getting the
ace where she used to come from. All right, So you had three
blocks as a team, the Batcher'shad eight, and that seemed like a
pretty solid block there against Northwestern. How would you rate the block tonight?
I feel like our blocks it's beenbetter than hus been you know, great
touches a lot less negative. Soyeah, we've been working a lot on
it. Well, congratulations on thevictory and congratulations on your art Sandy match.

(01:25:04):
Thanks step Devin Robinson with the victory. Here the Badgers win it.
Here comes Coach Sheffield. Sorry coach, we've had some technical difficulties here tonight.
Uh so we're doing it over thephone. So he just kind of
talk about I was just asking Devinabout it. She said, you know

(01:25:25):
when Tammy ends it at the end, you knew that was coming as kind
of what she said. Uh,it was pretty cool to see Tammy ended
with an ace. Yeah. Firstof all, how a football team doing.
I have no idea. Okay, all right, shuh Yeah. She
goes back here and I serve andI turned to the bench. I said,

(01:25:46):
I said, watch, this shouldbe pretty badass. If she aces,
I'm right now, turn around justin time to see or drop right
inside the end line. But yeah, it's a fun way to end it.
I mean your team. Uh,in this match, I thought one
of the keys was Julia Ojo inthat second set, which really just busted

(01:26:06):
it wide open. Not only wasshe getting a couple of bass but she
was getting Northwestern out assistant. She'sbeen like very consistent over her last few
matches behind the service line. Howdo you see her behind the line recently?
Well, she's she's serving with alot more pace and uh, you
know, and hiding it nice andclean and flat and got a little bit

(01:26:28):
of a run, you know what. I see her errors are going up
a little bit more. But heropponent's passing percentage is really UH is really
dropping and we're scoring a lot ofpoints off of her serve. She's applying
a lot of pressures, so she'strying to find that a little balance bit.
UH. The kid has a lotof confidence that her serve is better

(01:26:51):
than other people's UH receive and she'sbeen like app for a little a little
while. It's fun, it's funto watch. What's also fun to watch
is these UH program records that keepfollowing this team around Arkansas program record in
attendance, Ye had the seventeen thousandAdviser Florida program record over ten thousand tonight

(01:27:13):
four thousand, eight hundred and eightynine. That's a new school record for
Northwestern. What does it mean tohave this type of following wherever you go.
Yeah. Well, I mean it'sa every road trip we've had,
some bars had has a record crowdingand you know, but but you're also
seeing around the country. It's Ithink people are uh, it's we're promoting

(01:27:35):
this board better. We're on TVa lot more. I think it's,
uh, love the direction, youknow. But I thought we did a
great job switching gears. I thoughtwe did a great job receiving serve.
Uh you know that they were reallygoing after GG a lot tonight. I
thought she did a did a greatjob of keeping us in system her well,

(01:27:57):
I mean, I don't know.I mean we got a lot of
them on. They're trying to getthe ball on Timmy Frank handled the ball
real well. Defensively, I thoughtwe were fantastic. We it was good.
We haven't really been able to putback to back practices in in a
few weeks, and I think anelement of that has shown in our in
our match play this week. Wewere able to put two really good defensive

(01:28:21):
practices out there where that was thesole focus, and I thought we were
really good defensively. We were wewere pursuing balls, we were balanced,
we got you know, great blocktouches. We didn't get toot a whole
lot at the net, and withthe speed that they're wanting to run,

(01:28:43):
I thought we had great discipline andgreat deflections up of the net defensively this
we were pretty solid in those practices. The results of just the way the
schedule fell right where you had allthese days off in her own. Yeah,
it's a little bit funky of howwe how we've gone. And then
we've also sure for opportunities where wedon't. We don't do a whole lot
of back to back days off inpractice in season that if there's one or

(01:29:08):
two opportunities, we'll look for that. We threw one of those in because
we've been playing a lot of fivesettlers. So when you're playing a lot
of five setters, you're doing alot of traveling and you're not playing back
to back days, whether it's aday or two in between, it's hard,
you know, it's hard to getpractices in there, and so we've
been a lot more of recovery modethan being able to get in there and

(01:29:31):
go. We got a couple ofdays, a couple of days of that
this week, and I thought itshowed in our play congrats on the victory.
Thanks thanks John. All Right,it's Wisconsin head coach Kelly Sheffield,
