(01:35):
six seven one zero eight. That's Mets Plumbing online at
mets plumbing dot com. All right out of the gates
here on a Tuesday, a little Clemson Tiger men's basketball review.
You know, it's unique and we're hoping to get up
with JD. Powell. You may remember JD from his playing
days at Clemson. He was, you know, walk on that
(01:57):
got a little playing time in his career, but has
since gone on to being in coaching and now in
the TV business. He was actually part of the call
last night of Clemson's opening game at Little John Coliseum
this season. I know, certainly there's a lot of excitement
still around Clemson basketball. Brad Brownell has had a roller
(02:19):
coaster career in my opinion, but in recent years much
more up than down. Last year's NCAA Tournament appearance and
the way that all shook out was certainly disappointing, but
one of the best seasons regular seasons, the best regular
season really Clymson has ever had in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
(02:41):
And we'll see now they didn't win the league, but
we'll see if they can play really well this year.
The problem is, you know, continuity and turnover and all
of those things are an issue for everybody in the country.
They used to just be an issue for a lot
(03:02):
of Clemson's opponents. Like I remember, it wasn't all that
long ago, and I think you will probably fall right
in line with this thought process as well. It wasn't
all that long ago where Clemson basketball was like a
veteran led team. And I'm not saying they're not veteran
led this year, but it was like by comparison to
everybody else because Clemson brought in players. And we would
(03:23):
talk about this openly on the show. Clemson's got to
recruit players that they can get four years out of,
while Duke and North Carolina and a handful of other
select teams in the country recruit players that they get
basically six months out of. And I always thought that
the advantage that gave Clemson and other schools maybe they
(03:44):
had the similar recruiting prowess to Clemson or status. Maybe
prowess isn't the right word, but similar recruiting status is
that you would be getting guys that would stick around
and play longer. Well that's really just not the case anymore.
There's the continuity in the game at college basketball is
(04:09):
in a different place than it's ever been for everybody.
And you look at Clemson's roster and it's a bunch
of new names, just a handful of faces, and even
one of those a face that returned in RJ. Godfrey.
But the Tigers did win by fifty last night, and
gave up just thirty eight points in the game eighty
(04:31):
eight thirty eight, the final score wired to wire over
New Hampshire. The thirty eight points were the fewest allowed
by Clemson in a season opener since all the way
back in nineteen forty six, when the Tigers beat Erskine
the Flying Fleet fifty eight to thirty. Clemson was led
by Ace Buckner, wearing his father's very familiar number twenty
(04:55):
one in the throwback jerseys as well for Ace Rockin'
his dad. Greg Butner's number looked really awesome in those
old school jerseys. Finished with eighteen points, three rebounds to assist,
and one block shot. He outscored his father in his
opening game, Greg scored ten points, did have nine assists, however,
(05:17):
and five rebounds in his debut back in November of
nineteen ninety four. Hard to believe that's where we are now,
but a big win for the Tigers. Buttner was six
of seven from the floor, also six of seven from
the free throw line. The returned R. J. Godfrey, back
from Georgia, nearly totaled his third career double double, finishing
(05:40):
with nine points and nine rebounds. Jake Wallin, the transfer
from Utah added eleven points and four rebounds, and Jason Porter,
the transfer excuse me, Justin Porter, the transfer from Middle
Tennessee State, had eight points and five rebounds and three assists,
and Carter Welling, the transfer from Utah Valley, had double
(06:02):
digit scoring as well, with ten points. Clemson closed the
first half with a fifteen to two run over the
last sixteen sixteen and led by twenty seven at the
break forty three, two sixteen. Clemson will return to action
at Little John Coliseum November the seventh, as they host
Garden a Web at seven o'clock. That game will be
(06:23):
on the ACC Network and you might be able to
watch it if if ESPN and YouTube TV get all
of their ducks in a row. The fifty point margin
a largest the largest margin in a season opener since
a one oh five fifty five win over Wagner back
(06:47):
in November of nineteen eighty three. So a compelling, a
compelling and convincing victory for the Clempson Tigers. They are
one to zero. They are fifteen to one in open
there's underhead coach Brad Brownell. They are forty one in
their last forty one season openers dating back to nineteen
eighty five and eighty six, and the Tigers are three
(07:11):
to o against teams in the American Eastern Conference. Here's
Brad Brownell following Clemson's victory over New Hampshire last night
at Little John Coliseum.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Obviously, great opener for us. Really please with the defensive
execution of our game plan, you know, you never know
how that's going to be, but our staff was on
point with that, did a really good job. And I
give our guys a lot of credit for executing that
part of the game today. Just you know, couldn't have
(07:46):
gone any better for us, just in terms of guys
getting experienced making some plays.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
So yeah, just really good opener.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Brad Brownell was asked to give his evaluation on the
freshman's playingcluding being led by East Buckner.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, Zach had a tough one, just you know, getting
two files right away and then having to kind of
come sit and but it's funny and then he had two,
you know, two layups where he looks like he's gliding
and makes a couple of plays. I thought that they
were all solid. I thought Ace was obviously very good.
He was aggressive, he found some some open floor situations
(08:23):
and got to the rim, attacked the basket. Chase Thompson
just really solid the way he played. I thought he
guarded well for for.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
A young guy.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
The way they played, it's a lot of individual one
on one defense, and I thought he did a good
job of of you know, using his size and in
space appropriately, made a couple of good passes out there.
Good to get trained a couple of minutes. That's good
just for his experience. And uh, but no, I was
pleased certainly with with the young guys on our team.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Brad bro That was also asked about, you know, working
through this rotation and obviously it's going to be you know,
I would say a little up and down kind of
given all the new pieces. But here were his thoughts
after game one.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Yeah, I think you see that, you know, a lot
of guys can contribute. And I thought our starters did
some really good things establishing tone and the way we
were going to play old older guys. So and I
was pleased with them. In the second half. I kind
of challenged them at one of the timeouts to go
out and when the next three minutes told him that
(09:28):
might be the end for him for the day. So
they did a good job there. But we have a
lot of guys that can play. I mean, we have
a lot of guards that can come in and contribute,
and I thought Carter did some really good things. He
was efficient, and then defensively he was guarding some guards late,
played with good defensive discipline there. So yeah, I'm just
obviously this is one of those games where things are
going very well and you have momentum and you know,
(09:50):
everything is you know, easy. We're obviously the bigger, stronger team,
and we did what the bigger, stronger team should do.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Now. One of the strengths that I really seeing this group,
and not necessarily because of their play yesterday, but just
the variety and the ability for these guys to play
a bunch of different ways and go with a bunch
of different lineups. Here's Brad Rightell talking to you through
that as well.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, it's good.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
You know, we still got to figure everybody out, and
you can see at times a little disjointed. You know,
we broke a few things off, and you know, I
got frustrated a couple of times because we need to
stay in offense.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
We need to learn how.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
To grind and and we're going to have to do
that against better competition. But I do think again, I
just think we have we have a lot of different
players that can play, and so it's really hard as
a coach, you know, all right, who's who are we
doing it tonight? Some of us who's playing?
Speaker 4 (10:51):
Well?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
You know tonight you were able to get everybody about
the same amount of minutes, which was good.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Ace had it going today, which was good. You know.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
I thought Dylan was really good early and kind of
helped set the tone for the team. So Nick and
r J were you know what we hope they would
be just very solid and older experienced players that played
played the game the right way.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
So it's good. I think we have depth.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
That's Clemson. Hey, coach Brad Brown, they all talking about
this Clemson Tiger men's basketball team. Final thing from him.
He was asked about the return of r J. Godfrey.
Here's his thoughts on having one of his former players
back via the transfer portal.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Yeah, yeah, he's He's been phenomenal to have back. Obviously,
I missed him dearly last year and and uh, I'm thankful.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
That he's with us. I know he is as well.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
You know, he's really helped Dylan Uh lead this this group.
Dylan does a good job a lot of times with
those young perimeter players, and r J's kind of the
guy that Nick and Carter and Trent and and Chase
will kind of lean on and just in practice, those
guys will say things that they know that that need
(12:11):
to be said and I don't always have to do it.
And because they've been around, and I certainly think there's
an appreciation that r J feels for you know, our
program and certainly the university, and you know, so it's
great to have him back. He just he's such a
positive young man and energy giver and fun guy to
(12:32):
be around every day that he just makes everybody on
our team much better.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
There you go. That's Brad Brown. Now. So we'll shift
gears away from basketball. We might get up with JD. Powell,
as I mentioned, and if we do, we'll try to
squeeze him into the program today or maybe even tomorrow.
As we get you ready for another game of Clemson basketball,
as they look to game two of the season for
the Climbs of football team, it will be game nine
and they have three victories three and five heading into
(13:01):
this matchup against the Florida State Seminoles. And we talked
about this a little bit yesterday with William qualkin Bush.
Just the rarity, the rarity of where these two teams
are heading into this matchup. I mean, this game for
(13:25):
years has been between two teams that were on the
doorstep of a national championship or conference championship. And the
Seminoles are four and four and one and four in
the ACC and Clemson is three and five and two
and four. It couldn't get much uglier for these two teams.
(13:50):
If the standings were flipped upside down, it would look
more correct than it does than it does right side up.
You could convince me maybe Boston College is Eyracuse. We're
at the top of the league, followed by Florida State,
North Carolina, Stanford, and then Clemson. Yeah, I can't. Maybe
not this year, but in my life I could be
convinced that maybe something like that would happen instead. What
(14:15):
I'm looking at as a five and over Virginia, speaking
of which Chad Morrissel joined will join the program tomorrow
in eight and one overall Cavalier team Georgia Tech. After
their loss this weekend, they are now five and one
at eight and one, Pitt is five and one, seven
and two, Louisville four and one, seven and one, SMU
(14:37):
is four and one, six and three, Duke is four
and one, five and three. So remember a couple of
games into this season when Clemson picked up like their
second Atlantic Coast Conference loss, and I talked about how, hey,
there's still a chance that you could worm your way
back in because I think there's gonna be some you know,
a mess, so to speak. At the top, Well, look
(15:00):
at that mess. You're looking at it. And for the
Clympson Tigers, trying to figure out how they're going to
kick it in the high gear is a big question.
At this point in the calendar year. They gotta win
essentially out to make a bowl game. They got Florida State, Louisville,
(15:26):
Furman in South Carolina and scrounging three victories in these
final four games. Based off of what we have seen,
I mean, how many of you would feel good about that?
Certainly I know I don't. I don't feel good about
(15:49):
it at all. And so from now until the end
of the season, it's anybody's guess as to what Clemson
team will show up. And I'm not saying the one
that has shown up has deserved to win games. But
there has been a team that has shown up. Sometimes
(16:12):
it's on offense, not as frequently, but it's also been
occasionally on defense that's good enough to win these games
that Clemson has played. Like, if there's one little glimmer
I would say of hope for Clemson, it's that you
have done this before, like you have been a really
(16:38):
good team in recent years. I mean that's the glimmer
of hope, and maybe even looking back in the last
season and the expectations that people had about this team
a year ago. Dabo Swinging met with the media earlier today.
Will hear some of his comment is coming up in
just a few minutes here on the program. But all
(16:59):
in all, I think for the Clipson Tiger faithful out there,
the Clipson Tiger fans among us that are sitting there
looking at these final four games and trying to figure out,
how do you scratch four or excuse me, how do
you scratch three out of these four? I can tell
you better win this weekend because I don't see how
(17:20):
you're winning out against Louisville, Furman, and South Carolina. The
game Cocks have played better even though they've been losing,
even though they've been firing coaches. They fired their offensive
line coach, they fired Mike Schuley this weekend. By the way,
Jack Veltrie Gamecockcentral dot Com coming up on the program
in just a minute. Jack, I'm not sure he's gonna
(17:42):
be getting a Christmas card from Shane Biemer. Jack was
asking some questions about the about the team and the
coaching staff. This was before the firings went down and
Shane Biemer got a little hot under the collar. We'll
talk with Jack Veltrie about that coming up in our
number two eight zero three four five zero zero eighty
(18:02):
six text line, phone line. Be a part of the
program anytime, any place, anywhere on our website clemsonsportsau dot
com and on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok. We are where you
are as well. So you better win this week. You
better get the four with three to play, because again
(18:24):
I feel like you can assume not safe to assume
much of this group, but I think you can assume
that you're gonna be Firman if you win this week.
It really feels like you have two games to get
yourself eligible four bowl One would be on the road
at Louisville, who is the fourteenth ranked team of the
country seven to one overall. I don't feel great about it,
(18:46):
especially given the fact that the year ago they punched
you right in the face. And number two would be
at South Carolina on November the twenty ninth. That's a
noon kickoff, that's a positive. South Carolina's kind of being
the dumps, and quite frankly, given their schedule the game Cocks,
(19:06):
that might be their bowl game as well. That game
could very well be Clemson's chance to go to a
bowl game. In South Carolina's bowl game, because the game
Cocks are already three and six, South Carolina has to
win out unless they five and seventeen gets to a
(19:27):
bowl game and they go to number three Texas A
and M. This weekend. That's a noon kickoff, that's a
positive for them. Noon kickoff College Station this weekend as
the game Cox take on the Aggies. So again, keep
it a lot right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen
hundred and on the iHeartRadio app. We'll talk more with
Jack Veltree coming up in hour number two about the
(19:48):
game Cocks, the changes that have been made, what's the
you know, what are the conversations going on behind closed
doors about Shane Beemer's job? All that and more when
we get back an hour two. Keep it a lot
right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred clypses Wartsal
lov Swann on a Tuesday afternoon the show The SHAKESPA
south Land to talking Tuesday up in Tigertown, and as
we do per custom here, we dive into Dabo Sweeney's
(20:10):
opening statements as you met with the media earlier today morning.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
Another tough opportunity this week, A tough opponent with Florida State.
Both teams kind of similar in a lot of ways,
and we've we've had some some tough hart fault you know,
losses throughout our season, but all that goes out the
window Saturday night is Clemson Florida State. So a huge,
huge game for both teams. A good football team. Obviously
(20:36):
a new defensive coordinator for them. They're doing some.
Speaker 6 (20:39):
Some different things on that side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
But you know, typical Florida State, a bunch of guys
that are big, strong and can run a lot of
athletic you know, guys in the secondary, downhill, guys at backer,
big inside, especially at number six, So you know, very multiple.
You know, similar to Duke that we just played, and
that they're very aggressive and very downhill type of defense,
(21:04):
but I'd say probably a little bit more multiple with
their coverage and in and out of three and four down.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
That's Dabosweeney's opening statements about the Florida State Seminoles. Here
he is talking about the seminal offense.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
And then offensively, either the number one total offense in
the country, so they're explosive. All starts with the quarterbacks,
scoring forty points a game and you know, five hundred
something yards a game.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
Gust does a great job.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Obviously, known Gus a long time and been against him
many times. I've always had a lot of respect for
how he puts it together.
Speaker 6 (21:36):
He's very committed to running the football.
Speaker 5 (21:38):
They're eighth in the country in rush offense, and anytime
he's got a quarterback that's really committed to run in
the system, they're a problem. And you know, Number one
for them is a great football player. I think he's
a great competitor. I thought that when he was at BC.
Just always admired his game. Uh, he's a very good thrower.
(22:01):
I mean he can he can push the ball down
the field. But he's just he's a creator. I mean
he can create explosives not only with his arm, but
he can create explosives with his patience and sitting in
there and holding the ball, but also with his ability
to scramble and create. So they do a good jobs
far as the scheme and how they formation, a lot.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
Of a lot of motions, a lot of eye candy.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Uh, there's gonna be seven or eight shots, there's gonna
be three or four reverses, there's gonna be a bunch
of screens. You know, and you kind of know what's coming.
But it's hard to defend, you know, because of because
of you know, how they formation and how they put
it together and uh, and how he calls it. He's
got a great feel for it. That's why. That's why
(22:47):
he's been so successful for so long. A lot of
double moves, a bunch of special type plays, uh, gain
specific plays that Gus has always done a good job with.
So we got our hands full, and especially coming off
the game, we just played defensively. Uh, we'll have to
We're gonna we have to play a lot better, especially
when it comes to just having everybody on the same page.
(23:08):
But we look forward to the challenge and again always
got good skill in the return game as well, So
look forward to it this weekend.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
And then Davos Sween was asked to give his thoughts
on what Florida State did this past weekend against Wake Forest,
because that offense finally got clicking.
Speaker 6 (23:23):
I mean against against Wake Uh.
Speaker 5 (23:25):
Yeah, yeah, they just executed at a high level and
and uh, you know, ran the ball, got the run
game going.
Speaker 6 (23:30):
They're downhill.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
These backs are downhill and again their eighth in the
country in Russian.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (23:35):
But they just did a great job of executing on
both sides of the ball. Didn't give up some of
the explosives. A couple of the explosives that Wake hit
got called back. Uh you know that that you know,
could have could have affected them early. But they just
got control of the game and really played a very
clean game. Again, coming off an open date, you could
(23:55):
tell they were they were in a good spot mentally
and fresh.
Speaker 6 (23:59):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (24:00):
They again had a tough straight they lost four in
a row and in some close games, I mean games
that were you know, just a few plays you know
that that they it could have gone either way, So.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
Just played played clean football.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
Sweeney was also asked about Clemson's defensive backs and how
they've sort of reacted to the conversations about their play,
et cetera.
Speaker 5 (24:23):
Yeah, back to practice and everybody taking ownership watching the tape.
I mean, it's, you know, got to tell the truth.
I mean, so I don't really care what we do
as long as we got eleven guys that know what
they're doing. I mean, I really don't. I just I mean,
you just it's frustrating. You know, I've been beat many times,
(24:43):
but it's frustrating when you just you don't even give
yourself a chance because you know, you just don't execute
the call for whatever reason. So we got to get
eleven guys on the same page. I don't care if
it's one call. Everybody knows it. If they they beat you,
they beat you. But we need eleven guys on the
same page. And so I mean they've responded well. I
mean it's I mean, everybody, we all know the problems
(25:05):
internally and what we did wrong. And and really it's
frustrating because it's two games in a row and we
played good at North Carolina.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
We played good at Boston College.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
From an execution standpoint, we didn't have we had very
few bus and then all of a sudden, we've had
two games in a row, we've had some really big
bus that that create a lot of strain and a
lot of frustration. So again, it's one thing to give
up some plays and guys people make plays. It's another
thing where you got eight guys doing what they're supposed
(25:36):
to do. So that's that's a frustrating that we're ten
and you know, and when you're when you're on offense,
you know you can punt.
Speaker 6 (25:44):
You can still punt.
Speaker 5 (25:46):
You know, you can have a bunch of guys fall
down and it's bad, but you can punt on defense
it's a touchdown and and that's a problem. So but
that's you sign up play defense. That comes with it.
So we got to be better, better, no no question
about it.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Dabosweeney was also asked about whether or not some of
the backup safeties, et cetera would get maybe some opportunities
in this matchup.
Speaker 5 (26:11):
I think again, you know, Griffin played some last week,
Venables played some last week. I think they played five
safeties last week. So we just just got to play better.
I think again, got the right guys. We just have
had some untimely mistakes. It's not like an effort, you know,
we always say it's effort with the proper technique.
Speaker 6 (26:29):
Which leads to the execution. We just got to get
those guys better.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
That's not just safety, it's corner two, it's a linebacker,
it's d tackle, it's d n it's it's every single position.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
Had some critical busts in the game.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
That again, some of Dabos Sweeney's comments from earlier today.
Will jump back into some more from him when we
get back plus hour number two, we'll talk about the
South Carolina game. Cocks is Jack Veltrie joints the program.
Remember remember these two teams were both Clemson and South Carolina.
We're both within the conversation at the beginning of the
year of potentially being college football playoff teams. Heck, a
(27:06):
year ago when they played, that game was nearly a
play in game. It almost got South Carolina in, It
almost got Clemson out. The Tigers said, well did get
Clemson out, but they had to go win the a
SEC championship to get in. Neither team sniffing the College
Football Playoff this year. They can't spell college football playoff
at South Carolina. They can't spell it at Clemson, and
(27:29):
the Tigers have a couple of national championships in the
rafters from the CFB Playoff. Stay with us, Welcome back
Clemson's Sports Talk on a Tuesday afternoon the show The
Shakes of South Landing. You ever say something to RELs
how dumb it sounded. I went into break when that
sounded dumb in the rafters now have a dome. Swanee.
(27:52):
The championships aren't in the rafters at Death Valley, fair point.
I agree, they are not in the rafters. Speaking of rafters, though,
where they hanging the rafters? In the basketball arena where
Clipson played last night? Jerseys? Where can you get jerseys?
Alumni Hall corner of campus on College Avenue, downtown Clypson,
(28:15):
just the stones throw away from historic Riggs Field Bowmenfield,
as well Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop or online
in Alumni Hall dot com go check them out today.
It's Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop. All right. Debosweeney
met the media earlier today and Sweeney was asked about
(28:37):
another safety Noah Dixon and whether or not he had
the chance to maybe play at some point.
Speaker 5 (28:42):
Yeah, No, it's getting better. I think Noah's got a chance.
He's got a chance to be a good player around here.
I think he's gonna start on maybe a couple of
special teams this week. But Noah's a red shirt freshman.
He missed a lot of time, but he's he is
a guy that I think is, you know, still not
fully confident in everything, but I do think he's a
(29:04):
guy that's gonna end up being a good player.
Speaker 6 (29:06):
Here.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Some other news that broke during Davos Sweeney's Coaches show
last night after the men's basketball game was that offensive
lineman Elijah Thurman is going to be out for the
entire season. Here's Sweeney giving his explanation on the decision.
Speaker 6 (29:21):
There, Well, we didn't want.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
To shut him down, but you know, it's mother nature.
He's got to have surgery. I mean, it just he
just wasn't able to. You know, they were hoping that
maybe come back, but he just it keeps slipping out,
and so you know, he tried to go through the
protocol to get him back to play, but he just
just can't. He can't do what he needs to do,
so it's we didn't want to, it's just where we are.
(29:44):
The positive was the positive. One positive aspect of it
is we will be able to save his year so
he'll be able to be a research sophomore next year,
So that that's a that's a positive aspect.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Davos. Sweeney was also asked about Limpson's decision to huddle
a little bit more this past weekend and sort of
what the thought process was on that.
Speaker 5 (30:06):
Yeah, I just felt like that was something that It's
just something that we've talked a lot about and just
felt like because we haven't really been playing with great
tempo and so I feel like, you know, we just
we needed a little change in operation there. I do
think we need to there's some things we need to
clean up there too, But but I felt like, you know,
again with the ability of the headset and not having
(30:27):
to not having to have any signals at all unless
you're truly playing tempo, you know, when you're really playing fast,
you know, it's hard for him to They ain't got
time to I ain't got time.
Speaker 6 (30:38):
To see your signaling and get a signal in the game.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
But if you're if you're not playing with fast tempo
and your signaling, well, you know, you open yourself up
for you I mean, that's just part of the game.
Speaker 6 (30:48):
I mean, it's just part of it.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
And again, if they know it's run or passed, they
may not know exactly what, but that's an advantage. So
it just felt like huddling gave us a little something
different and not as much time to again process the
formations and zero signals.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
So I felt like that allowed us to.
Speaker 5 (31:07):
Kind of get our cleats in the ground a little
bit and play a little play a little cleaner.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Dabo Sweeney would go on to explain that some of
that had to do with the fact that, you know,
with the tempo, they weren't able to get into it,
they weren't getting first downs and and that's kind of
part of the stuff that they were just like, well,
let's just slow it down anyway. He was also asked
about bringing Jacobs, who played pretty well there for Clemson
on the offensive line at guard, and Jacobs is more
(31:34):
defined as a tackle, but whether or not Jacobs could
continue to play guard, I.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
Mean, absolutely, we ain't taking him out of there. He's
one of the best five. I ain't no doubt about it.
I mean, he's super proud of him. I mean, he's
you talk about a kid that cares too, man, I
mean I love that about him.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
I mean he really really cares.
Speaker 5 (31:52):
I mean that's a big grown man, full blown tears
when the game's over.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
Man.
Speaker 5 (31:57):
It's tough, tough locker room. That kid really cares. It's
important to him. And he's gonna be a he's a
he's a good player now, but he's gonna be a
great one.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
Uh. Tackle, he can play wherever.
Speaker 5 (32:08):
I don't ever see him being a center, but he's
I think an elite tackle or guard whatever, wherever, wherever
you need him to be.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (32:15):
But he did a good job and hadn't played guard,
so he's pretty much just a tackle. But for him
to be able to go in there and and operate,
and Lenthicum did a good job.
Speaker 6 (32:24):
And Tristan. Having Tristan in Lenthicum.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
You know, in between those two guys, two veteran guys,
Uh that that certainly helps, you know, have them all
on the same page.
Speaker 6 (32:32):
But he did a he did a heck of a job.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Sweeney was asked to evaluate Tristan Smith and his first
start and what he brings to the Glimpson passing attack.
Speaker 6 (32:40):
Yeah, just more opportunity. He's done a nice job.
Speaker 5 (32:43):
He's what is probably four or five games in a
row now, he's probably five to five games in a row.
He's been a factor for us, and it's just steady
and just gets better. I'd like to be a little
more decisive. There's there's a few times where we need
to be a little bit more catch and run as
opposed to catch paul in run.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (33:01):
You know, I think he can. I think he can.
Speaker 5 (33:03):
Uh, maybe there's a little bit more there and get
the ball put away a little bit. I mean there's
some things there needs to clean up. But I mean
he's a baller. I mean he's just and now his
confidence has grown. Uh, he's a he's a skyscraper.
Speaker 6 (33:16):
I mean he can.
Speaker 5 (33:17):
He can get up there and and you know, make
some plays for us. So just proud of him. Great kid,
great kid, I mean, just a great kid. He's he's
becoming a good he was a captain for Saturday. You know,
he's becoming a good leader. So I'm proud of him.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Final thing for Davos Sweeney today, he was asked about
ka Klubnick and how his ankle's been since Saturday's game.
Speaker 6 (33:41):
It's been good. Yeah, he really really came out of
the game in a good spot.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
So there you go, Dabo Sweeney talking about this Clemson
Tiger football team as they get ready for Florida State
to come to town. And it's weird. This is a game.
For so many years we would you knew that there
was something big that was gonna come out of it
on one side or the other. And this year, I'm
(34:10):
not sure what big or good could come out of
this for either team. I mean, certainly the opportunity to
go to a bowl game. I mean, there's no doubt
that the opportunity to go to a bowl game is
a big deal. But can we at least admit this
(34:32):
at this point that getting to a bowl game feels
like a big deal because you guys will say, and
you know it, that, oh man, if you're not in
the COAG Football Playoff, it didn't feel like a big deal.
But when you're three and five getting the six feels
like a big deal. Getting to a bowl game starting
to feel a little significant thinking about the season lasting
(34:54):
longer than the end of November. I mean, can you
imagine if we gotta shut down the foot November. Uugh,
talk about punching your right in the gut. All right, Well,
a quick brain, We'll come back with more. We'll put
a ball on hour number one right after this final
segment of our one Clemson Sports Talk again. Last night,
(35:16):
Clemson Tiger min's basketball team eighty eight thirty eight fifty
point win against New Hampshire. The Tigers will be back
in Little John Coliseum Friday night, seven o'clock on the
ACC Network as they faced Gardner Webb. I went to
basketball camp at Gardner web many many years ago. And
(35:41):
I also went to Virginia basketball camp. What was that
coach's name, Jeff Jones? That was fun. We played the
championship game at University Hall, won the championship. That's a
that is a sport I love right there now, basketball,
Holy moly, I do. And even last night just getting
(36:05):
a chance to see that team, getting a chance to
see as I mentioned earlier, Ace Buckner rocking that number
twenty one jersey as Dad's old number, making me feel
old though, making me feel old, and the Tigers win
that game by fifty points. Last night. A lot of
(36:29):
fun twelve players saw action eleven of them scored, and
I don't know what this team will be once they
get further into conference play. It's a weird it's a
weird time to be a sports fan collegiately, and I
truly hope, I hope for the fan that we can
(36:55):
get some sense of all of this, makes some sense
of the portal and the financial aspect of it. Teams
certainly have taken advantage in the past and cheated and
(37:17):
paid players, probably significant money. I mean, I can't. I'll
never forget the Cecil Newton, you know, the bag man,
that whole deal back Auburn and Old miss or shoot
me Auburn and Mississippi State like that kind of stuff
now looks looks like tiny little pebbles in terms of issues.
(37:42):
You know. The difference I think in this day and
age in that day and age, is that back then,
if you were gonna give a guy some money, you
probably weren't giving him a million dollars. That's just too obvious.
And players knew it, and boosters knew it, and so
(38:05):
guys might get, you know, ten grand. You know, maybe
somebody's getting five grand, not even like a month. I'm
talking about maybe for a year right, And I don't
know what the high end money was on the under
the table payments that were being made, but I can
assure you they are not higher than the high end
(38:26):
of what it is now and the way it's all constructed.
And I think the way we get this thing back
to good, it's gonna be hard to win. I think
the way you get this is a salary cap. This
is the most players can be paid on any given team.
(38:49):
It's gonna create incredible parody. The bad news is the
league is basically twice as big as the NFL, oh,
which with parody, is going to create a situation where
(39:09):
it's very hard to win for everybody. And what the
NFL and leagues like that do to counteract that is
the worst teams get the first pick. But that's not
how it works in college sports. And so what might
(39:30):
begin to happen maybe at some point, is a pecking
order will begin to exist, and it will likely be
similar to what it was in the past. There will
be some changes, but if nobody it kind of goes
(39:51):
back to my argument about not being able to talk
about players or recruits. If you make an illegal to
talk about players in recruits, then nobody can talk about
players in recruits zero equal zero. But if everybody can
talk about players in recruits, infinity equals infinity, and infinity
(40:16):
equaling infinity is the same as zero equaling zero. It's
infinite answers. In one respect, you create an advantage for
people who are willing to cheat, and in the other
you make it so that everybody can contact and you
(40:38):
just take away any advantages for cheating. If you get
to the point where there is you know, everybody can
pay the same amount, then you take away the advantage
of the schools that have multi billionaire business people in
(40:59):
their cafers, who have one individual, one human that can
give more than your entire alumni base, essentially. And I'm
not saying that that human is going to exist at
every school or going to be willing to give, but
that is the problem. That is the problem right now
(41:21):
for Clemson and certainly for South Carolina. I mean, like,
I don't know who the schools are that have the
biggest donors or the person with the biggest check, But
when billionaires and millionaires get involved in sports and you
don't have and the money's from the outside, it's not
some kind of funded thing. From the inside. Man, it's
(41:43):
gonna get messy. And the sport was not always clean.
I want to reiterate, not always clean. Guys are getting
money under the table, but it wasn't enough to necessarily
shift the tide the way. Hey, you come here, you'll
make three million dollars. You're making five hundred thousand at
school Eggs. That's a big shift. Hey we'll give you
(42:06):
fifteen grand, you're making ten. Eh. I'll stay where I'm at.
I like this program better. We just gotta get some guardrails.
Guardrails clean it up. It's still got to be cleaned
up more in my opinion. Our two, Jackveltrygamecoccentral dot Com
joins us. Stay with us.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
Each time for Clipson Sports Talk with Luwton Swan.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
It is our number two. That's drivetime right here on
the show that shakes the south Land, Clemsones, Sports, Salt
Law and swadding it out with you. Jackveltree Gamecockcentral dot
Com joins us momentarily part of the All Three network.
And of course our number two brought to you in
part by our goodference over at mets Plumb in mets
Plumbing dot Com two two six seven one O eight
(43:28):
that's two two six seven one zero eight. Jack Veltree
joins us. Jack, welcome in, man. How are you.
Speaker 7 (43:34):
I'm doing good man. It's good to talk with you
as always.
Speaker 2 (43:36):
Yeah, listen, I don't think uh Shane Biemer is gonna
be sending you any Christmas cards after the little exchange.
Look like you got him a little hotter into the
collar this week.
Speaker 7 (43:45):
Yeah, that was from about three weeks ago now, after
the Oklahoma game. Okay simply asked if he felt there
was any changes needed to be offensive play calling, and
he said that he made a change the week prior
with firing Lonnie Teasily, the offensive line coach, and then
(44:08):
you know that whole thing played out. But uh yeah,
now they've made a change and it's with the play
calling a few weeks after the fact, with Mike Shuler
being fired this past.
Speaker 2 (44:19):
Sunday again, Jack Veltrigamecockcentral dot Com with us and Jack.
You've watched this team, obviously a lot more than I have,
and I've tried to keep my eye on them as
much as I can. But where are the deficiencies? I mean,
has it just been the play calling? I mean, Mike
Shuler now being out do you expect there to be,
(44:39):
you know, significant improvement in this offense again heading into
facing perhaps the best team Carolina has played all season
in number three Texas A and M.
Speaker 7 (44:49):
Probably not. I think they kind of just are what
they are at this point. And here's the thing, I
don't know how much they can actually change from a
play calling standpoint then the plays that they already have.
Maybe just calling different plays in different sequences would make
a big difference. That I think would be the main thing.
I mean, maybe you can add a few new wrinkles
(45:12):
and layers to what you're already calling, but the overall
scheme I think is probably gonna be the same. Again,
I'm not a coach. I'm not sure exactly how this
works from their standpoint, and we don't even know yet
who's calling plays right now. And Shane Beaber did sound
Sunday for it would be a that'd be something he'll
talk about a little bit later, but it would be
a collectively group effort. So I mean, we'll see what
(45:37):
they do here moving forward. But there's three games left.
You need to win all three to make a bowl game.
I just I don't expect too much to change.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
Clemson and South Carolina, both seemingly racing towards the bottom,
almost making the Palmetto State rivalry look like a game
that could be potentially a matchup where South Carolina's only
hope to salvage a season is to add Clemson to
the teams that does it make it to a bowl game.
It's bizarre. I mean, from my standpoint watching Clemson, I'm
(46:06):
certain from your standpoint watching Carolina, you have to be
able to acknowledge what has happened in the state of
South Carolina across the board this year, these two major
Power four programs is nothing more than stunning.
Speaker 7 (46:19):
Yeah, I mean, look, you've probably watched Clemson a bit
more than I have, but I'm surprised with how bad
Clemson's been this year. I mean, I would have thought
they would have been at least like maybe a few logs,
but maybe like five and three at this time, not
three and five right now on the verge of probably
(46:39):
not making a bowl game this year. I mean, now,
Clemson path to get there, I think it's pretty smooth.
I would say, you get FSU at home this weekend,
you go to Louisvillette's prole loss, and then you you
get I think it's what Furman or yeah, yes, Furman.
So you win that game and then get South Carolina
on the road. Not an easy matchup, but I think
(47:02):
Clemson's path is pretty simple. Then you look at South Carolina.
They lose this week, they lose next week, into the
A and M, they're done. I mean, they would have
seven losses. So it's kind of crazy to see these programs,
both of which I mean think about this time last
year when they were facing off in Death Valley in
Memorial Stadium. We were talking about this is like a
(47:23):
potentially playing playoff games, right, and it was the biggest
game I think in the rivalry's history. And then this year,
I mean, we're talking about this game like who even
cares at this point, like it has it has no
impact other than just state bragging rights.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
Oh man, it is a rough one volleyball and Twitter
at Jack t Veltrie, Jack Belchie from game Cockcentral dot
com joining us here on the program on a Tuesday afternoon.
The other thing that I think South Carolina fans would
wonder because Clemson fans are kind of looking at this
situation with TJ Moore, excuse me, TJ Parker on the
(48:02):
defensive line is that maybe he'll return, like surprisingly return.
I mean, is there any chance, given the struggles that
Lenora Sellers has had, in your opinion, that he'll be
back next year, because at the beginning of the season,
I don't think anybody thought he would be returning. Is
there any chance that he's back wearing a South Carolina uniform,
(48:24):
you know, next season?
Speaker 7 (48:27):
Me personally, if if scouts still view him as a
first round draft pick, I don't think he's going to
be coming back. I just even with the season that
he's had. Yeah, I just don't think it makes much
sense for him to pass up on being a first
round pick, especially with his stock. I mean, not that
(48:49):
his stock is low, if it's still high, but with
the way he kind of performed the season, if that
happened again next year with the same type of struggles,
and I feelk he would drop a good bit. So,
you know, take take your chance while you can, I
would say so. I think he probably would go to
the draft. My overall take on it, though, is that
I don't think he's ready. From a passing standpoint, I
(49:12):
I thought he'd be better at this point in the year.
I was not expecting him to or Grass as much
as he has. I feel like that has a lot
to deal with Mike Shula and the play calling, and
obviously it's why Mike got fired because it was just
not good enough offensively. But you know, Linda Ars has
got to have some of these passes that he's missing on.
I mean, it's some of the throws are two wide,
(49:34):
open wide receivers and he's missing them by a few feet.
I mean it's just you gotta make your passes better,
and it just you look at his numbers this year
just does not look like if if it were for
last year and the hype around him and all the
tools that he has, I don't eve think we'd be
talking about him as his first round pick. But because
(49:55):
he has the skill set to go out there, the
potential reminds me a lot Anthony Richardson in a lot
of ways when he was a Colton overall a few
years ago. You see the potential, and I think that's
what's gonna sell a out a team on Lenors. Do
I think he's an early first round pick. No, I
think he's a later first round pick. But I think
team see there is potential there, and also given the
(50:18):
factors of South Kolne. A coordinatory situation with Mike Schull
was not good. Offensive line play was not good. Give
him a good offensive line, give him good play calling,
give him good instruction in time to learn in an
NFL system, maybe it can work out.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
You know, Jack, What's interesting about that that comp you
just made, which I think is a really good one
to Anthony Richardson, is how when when Richardson first kind
of got into the NFL, you saw a little bit
of what he could do collegiately. But as defenses started
to catch up, and obviously he's been banged up, but
as defense is caught up, he really struggled. And I
(50:54):
would almost wonder if that would make gms in the
NFL look at sellers with the aim concern on that
front as well, which might encourage him to come back. Like,
I'm all for these guys coming back if they've got
a chance to play collegiately and make money and potentially
improve their stock. I don't really care what position, who
they play for. I'm all for it. Come back, get
(51:15):
your degree, you know, make some money, and play this
game at the collegiate level. Would you agree with that
that perhaps because of those issues that Anthony Richardson's had
in the transition, that that might actually be something that
kind of becomes a red flag for sellers when he's
talking to these you know, NFL agents and scouts, et cetera.
Speaker 7 (51:37):
It would not be the worst thing for him to
come back. I do think he could use a little
bit more development. I think there's a few factors to
take into account here. Number One, South Carolin is making
an offensive coordinator higher. I mean, who are they gonna get,
I think is a big question, and I think that
could do a lot in terms of whether or not
he declares for the draft or not. He's got He'll
(51:57):
have a little bit of time after the season end
to make a decision because a we also can't rule
up the fact that maybe he enters the transfer portal
if he sticks around in college, that the portal opens
up on January. Second, the declaring for the drafts, I
don't think it's ntill later in the month in January,
so you have some time. And I think South Carolina
(52:18):
is going to be efficient in trying to figure out
who they want to hire as their OC wants the
season ends, and I mean, I think that can play
a big role in it, because if it's a really
good coordinator, maybe it's like, oh, well you see what
he did with so and so at this school for
so said coordinator, Right, maybe that's the path that Leonors
(52:40):
needs to go down. But also, again, like I said,
if his stock is as high as we think it is,
and NFL scouts are kind of saying the same thing,
then I don't see why you wouldn't go to the NFL.
Speaker 2 (52:52):
On Twitter at Jack t veltri go follow him today.
Going back to the coordinator change and the offensive line
coach change. You know I've said here on my show,
I don't think Dabo Sweeney has the guts to make
a change mid season, or maybe you guts in the
right word, but I just don't think he's gonna do it.
(53:12):
Where Where has the pressure, in your opinion, come from
to make these changes on Shane Beemer's staff. Has it
simply been in your mind Shane Biemer making these decisions?
Or are these the mega donors and everybody saying you
gotta make these changes?
Speaker 7 (53:31):
So I actually asked Shane about that the other day
because I was curious the way I presed the question
and about the OC decision to fire a Shula. Was
was it your decision? Did how much influence did Jeremiah
do Noddy have in this decision South Carolina's athletics director
or was it kind of just the mutual decision that
you guys came down to. And the way he put
(53:53):
it was, quote, this was one hundred percent my decision,
one billion percent my decision. From that quote right there,
Take it for what you will. From the horse's mouth.
It was Shane Beemer's decision to move on from Shula.
He said he had called Jeremiah earlier in the day
(54:14):
or late into the night, whatever it was, earlier before
he was going to make the decision official, and then
he kind of just came down to it that it
was time to fire Mike Shula. So, I mean, in
terms of the decisions being made, I can't help but
feel like, because Shane's never done this stuff before, firing
coaches mid season, Yeah, I can't help a little bit
(54:37):
of there's influence from others. But at the same time,
I'll take Shane's word for it what he said it
was with you know, he's making the decisions that are
best for the football burner right now.
Speaker 2 (54:48):
Yeah, because it's because you don't have like a great
option after that fact, right, like you, you're just three
games remaining in the season. Essentially, if you lose this weekend,
like you, you said, you're not going to a bowl game
unless you get some fortuitous things happening nationally where some
five and seven teams end up qualifying for bowl games.
(55:09):
You're not very far off from the finish line at
this point, and you see coaches make changes maybe at
the end of the season before a bowl game, like
you see that across the country at times, but to
do it in this moment certainly feels a little bit
off script. I agree with you one hundred percent again.
Jack Veltrie follow him on Twitter at Jack T. Veltrie
(55:31):
covers the South Carolina game Cocks for gamecockcentral dot Com,
part of the on three network. Make sure you sign
up today to keep up with everything going on with
South Carolina, and of course you can get that info
from Jack Veltrie as well on Twitter. Now, Jack just
shifting gears a little bit, and we didn't get a
chance to talk about this, but Clemson obviously tipped off
(55:54):
their basketball season last night. And college basketball is bizarre
because I remember a day and age where the strategy
for teams like Clemson was to be the more mature
team facing the young five star freshman at Duke right,
Like that was kind of the strategy recruit guys that
you could develop and bring up. Now the portals changed
(56:16):
rosters all across the country. I don't even know how
anybody keeps up with it, to be honest with you,
outside of once the you know, the balls bouncing on
the floor and you get to see these teams. What
are the expectations though, for Lamont Peis's team this year?
If you can give us that. And I really like him,
I know he and Brad Brannell are good friends. He's
had great success against Clemson, obviously some struggles in recent years,
(56:38):
but what you know, what is the expectation for him
this season and what kind of team do you expect
them to have.
Speaker 7 (56:45):
I think the expectations are to get close or make
it to the NCAA tournament this year. Like that has
to be the expectation because what you did last year
was not good enough, going twelve to twenty and two
and sixteen in the SEC. I mean it's I don't
know if this is like going to happen, but I
feel like this is a make or break year for
(57:08):
ELP and his job at South Carolina. Like another subpar season,
that would be three out of four years that were
pretty rough. Remember, Jeremiah did not he did not hire
Lamont Paris, and I think you can say the same
for all the other men's sports, Like Jeremiah did not
hire Shane Beemer, he did not hire Lamont Paris, he
(57:29):
did not hire Paul Minary. Like if any of these
sports have a bad season coming up, and I referenced
Shane for twenty twenty six, then it could get it
could get rough and lead to those coaches getting fired.
So for LP and his basketball program, I think they're
gonna be better this year. I like the talent they
have on this team, seeing them play against NC State's
(57:49):
only sample size we have right now. They also beat
George at closed secret scrimmage. But they're pretty good. They
got they can shoot the ball. That's gonna be their
identity this year, and I think they got a lot
of scoring options. So I think the floor is probably
like the ceiling is hopefully getting to MCAA tournament.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
Yeah, eighty eight, eighty six and that exhibition against NC State,
I think people really like NC State as well, so
very competitive in that one. And then tonight seven o'clock
over at the Colonial Life Arena, the Game Cox will
tip off their season against North Carolina A and T.
And I would tell everybody to watch it on the
SEC ESPN network. But if you're plus or whatever, but
(58:30):
if you're anything like me, Jack, You've got YouTube TV,
and no matter what scheme you try to do to
get around it, I can't get anything. Man, I haven't
seen sports in like a week. It's killing me.
Speaker 7 (58:41):
Oh man, I'll tell you. I'll go on to YouTube
TV because I have it as well at ESPN, and
you know, I'll go on there. I'm like, oh, where
something's missing here? And I'm like, oh, you TV doesn't
have ESPN anymore. So ESPN's got to get that figured out.
It's absolutely ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (58:57):
Yeah, I found myself watching the rerun of old movies.
I mean, it's it's been a struggle. It has been
a struggle, But not this segment, not with Jack Veltrie
every Tuesday talking about the game Cocks. Jack, are you
heading out to the college station?
Speaker 7 (59:11):
Ah? Yeah, that will be so they're all South Cownin's
off this week. And then next week. I'll be in
College Station next Friday, So go.
Speaker 2 (59:19):
Man, what a time. How much fun will that be?
Speaker 7 (59:23):
Man? I like going to College Station. It's a it's
a good time out there, good atmosphere. A and M
brings a lot of uniqueness to the SEC. So I
love it.
Speaker 2 (59:32):
Yeah. And and I'll say this too, I think when
you look at the the transformation of Kyle Field and
of everything in and around that stadium since they joined
the Southeastern Conference, Buddy, I don't think there's a team
in the country that stepped their game up to the
SEC level more that Texas A and M has. As
(59:54):
soon as they jumped into the league, they started all
the expansions and all the renovations. It's it's wild how
how different that place is versus when they arrived.
Speaker 7 (01:00:03):
Oh yeah, it's it's incredible what's going on over there.
I mean you look at Kyle Field like twelve thirteen
years ago, I mean it's it's nothing compared to what
they have now. So definitely a cool environment. Always recommend
checking it out if you ever get a chance to
go out there. It's it's super unique.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
Jack Veltrie on Twitter at Jack T. Veltrie. Again, the
game Cocks off this week. They head out to face
number three Texas A and M next weekend in College Station. Jack,
have a great week, my man.
Speaker 7 (01:00:35):
All right, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:36):
There you go, Jack Veltrie, Gamecockcentral dot Com. Aight O
three four or five H zero zero eighty six. Yeah,
tough sledding for Clemson and South Carolina the rest of
the way. I mean, it really is. And you have
left yourself no margin. You've left yourself no margin. That's
(01:00:58):
why Clempson's got to win this week against Florida State.
Give yourself a little bit of rope to potentially escape.
I mean, Dabo Sweeney talked earlier in the season about
your Batman, remember God bless Oh, Dabo's gotta get together.
I mean he was talking about Batman being trapped in
(01:01:20):
the cave references. I just need enough rope for these
guys to jump up and grab onto it to pull
themselves out of the hole. If you lose this week,
the rope is getting short. The room's already short, don't
get me wrong, but it is super short again seven
(01:01:41):
o'clock on Saturday, the ACC Network, It'll be Clemson and
Florida State, and then next week Clemson goes on the
road to Louisville on a Friday night seven point thirty
on ESPN Friday Night Action, and that could be a
(01:02:01):
huge one. Can you imagine if Clemson loses to Florida
State this week, loses another game at home? Oh my gracious,
I mean, that's that's Tommy West era stuff by dabos Sweeney.
If he pulls that feet off. All right, with a
quick break, we'll come back with more on the Tuesday.
(01:02:23):
Stay with us Clemson's sports, So long and swan. That
was Jack veltri before the break. All right, So I said,
we played some of Dabosweeny earlier. But Dabosweeny did kind
of get on a little bit of a little bit
of a rant today about the officials and a lack
(01:02:44):
of accountability for the officials. Of course, Dabosweeny was fine,
The institution was fine ten grand for dabos Sweeney's comments
after the game all Saturday. I wouldn't be shocked if
he gets another fine, frankly for this. Here he is, though,
talking about Clemson's program, and then he gets into the
(01:03:06):
situation with the officials.
Speaker 5 (01:03:11):
Don't have cracks in our foundation here like this this
house right here is built on rock. There's no cracks
in the foundation. Now, we got some people that ain't
put their best stuff in it. They you know, we
got to we gotta be better, and I got to
make sure we get the right people in the house,
you know, in all aspects of it. But this thing's
built right. It's built to last, no doubt about it.
(01:03:34):
It doesn't mean we're immune to bad year. I mean,
I mean they were gonna fire coach Brian nineteen sixty nine,
nineteen seventy, They ready to run him out of town
to losing seasons in the SEC in six and five,
six and five. I mean, every great coach can have
a bad year. But yeah, the playoff has changed a
(01:03:55):
lot of and just what's at stake. And that's why
I was so frustrated with the refs, a little sawtalthy,
because it's there's a lot at stake and there's not
there's not consequences and this perfect Coaches get crucified, fined,
players get crucified, held to this unrealistic accountability standard. But
(01:04:19):
refs have zero accountability. Well they do, but it's behind
a curtain. They get to go home and drink a
beer and and you know, get on with their life
and just leave the carnage left behind. That affects a
lot of people, people losing jobs and there's not That
system needs to change too.
Speaker 6 (01:04:37):
That system needs to change.
Speaker 5 (01:04:40):
Uh, there should be first of all, these refs should
be they should with with what's at stake now and
what's going on, Like the NFL, they're not part time reefs,
like they need to be full time refs, and it
needs to be a job and there needs to be
one leader and one voice and what that's what it
should be number one.
Speaker 6 (01:04:56):
And then there should be public.
Speaker 5 (01:04:57):
Accountability period Like you can't criticize them, but they're on
the field, they're in the arena, but they're the only
ones in the arena that have no consequences publicly or
God forbid you for you get to pay a fine
because you criticize performance, but yet everybody else can be
(01:05:17):
criticized everybody. It's a bad system the way it's set up,
and there needs to be some change. There needs to
be the ability to review egregious calls in certain situations
because it means to people are losing jobs, whether it's
assistance or head coaches or players and how they get
(01:05:38):
crucified on social media and things like that, Like it's
it's impactful. So you know, as opposed to just getting
a report on Monday, you turn in ten, we had
a game. I'm not criticized. I'm just I can't you know,
I can't tell you. I ain't to tell you the game.
I'm not gonna say the game. But we're only allowed
to turn in. You know, there's a system of accountability,
(01:05:58):
but y'all don't know anything about it. It's behind a curtain.
How dare we have accountability in the meantime we got
gambling issues going on, people being suspended, all that kind
of stuff, right, yep. I mean refs are people too,
It ain't just coaches and players. And if they're a
part of the game, then by god, they ought to
be a part of the game, and they ought to
(01:06:19):
be a part of the accountability, and they ought to
be a part of the consequences, not just behind some
shadowy curtain like now.
Speaker 6 (01:06:27):
They ought to have to answer for it.
Speaker 5 (01:06:30):
And listen, there's judgment calls and all that, and I mean,
we just have to disagree to disagree, but there's also
absolute flat out misses with no consequences and you know,
and you get a shoot you We're allowed to turn
in ten calls, all right.
Speaker 6 (01:06:49):
And so we had a game earlier this year that
we lost.
Speaker 5 (01:06:53):
I had fourteen I wanted to turn in, but I
only turn in ten, all right. I thought eight were wrong,
but got back Yep, missed it. Five of the ten
were wrong. And I mean, these are game changing calls.
Obvious pass interference not called that takes you off the field.
(01:07:19):
But yeah, we just get it. This will be addressed
with the crew and YadA, YadA, YadA. Okay, yeah, but
you ain't no public there's no public accountability, ain't none
of that.
Speaker 6 (01:07:32):
So that's the system. The system needs to change. It
needs to be changed.
Speaker 5 (01:07:35):
There needs to be challenge opportunity, and we need full
time officials. If you're going to have this type of stakes,
he eds to be full time officials. And everybody should
have consequences, and the coaches and the players shouldn't be
the only ones that publicly have accountability.
Speaker 6 (01:07:52):
That should change too with this system that we're in.
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
So I'm just guessing. And again we posted this our
social media just a little bit ago. I'm I am
just guessing that Dabo Sweeney is about to get another
hefty fine for that one. I mean, what do you
think did that? Did that seem like something that the
(01:08:16):
acc is just gonna look past? I mean, I don't know, man,
it feels like it feels like this is gonna be
a big fine for Sweety here, big fine in coming. Yeah,
I'll say he's a little salty, A little salty. How
(01:08:40):
do you like your dabo? Sweety? Folks extra salty? He
said they could just go on and drink a beer.
Oh my gracious, Sweety off the top rope boom. That
was such a long ramp. I had to do it.
(01:09:01):
I had to do a two part drop, two part
drop on social one part drop was too much, too much, man, Swanie,
you can't put all that in one video. Nobody will
watch the whole thing. You gotta slice it and dice it.
You gotta, you gotta purey it. I wish shot man.
(01:09:23):
How do these You ever watched these chefs? How do
they get These knives are so dang sharp? Like I
watch these YouTube or TikTok guys, like tell me how
to cook something. They're like slicing through something with a
knife that's like my knife, Like trying to cut up
with a you know, plastic knife, and I got like
knife sharpeners. I can't sharpen a knife. I'm like an
(01:09:46):
idiot when it comes to that. And I don't say
idiot much, but I am when it comes to sharpening knives.
Quick break. I'll come back with more as the NFL
trade deadline hits, big news for the Cowboy fans among
us after this Clemson Sports tall Bag with you on
a Tuesday afternoon. So the NFL trade deadline comes and
(01:10:08):
goes the winners and the losers, and look Quinn Williams,
defensive tackle out of Alabama, who's a a three time
Pro Bowler. I think now in the NFL traded from
the Jets where you're doing nothing to the Cowboys where
you're doing lightly more than nothing. But for the Cowboys,
(01:10:30):
I would say it's a big move. And that was
the one that really stood out to me because you know,
the Cowboys lost their top defender Michael Parsons at the
beginning of the season when he was traded to the
Green Bay Packers. So Williams should help shore up some
(01:10:52):
things for them defensively. Three can say the Pro Bowl,
it's just a one time All Pro in a six years,
but they gave up a lot to get him twenty six,
twenty twenty six second round pick in the future twenty
twenty seven first round pick. But I think hoping that
(01:11:12):
he'll come in and be someone that can be a
stalwart in the middle for them defensively, kind of like
what the New York Giants have always felt that they
had in Dexter Lawrence up until the past couple of weeks,
where Dexter Lawrence just hasn't been getting it done in
(01:11:34):
the city that Never sleeps. And my buddies who are
New York Giant fans let me know all the time
about sexy Dexy Clemson, and you know he got hurt
a year ago. Now Dexter has not been traded. I'm
just bringing him up because, similar to Quinn Williams, he's
a guy that can really clog up things in the middle,
(01:11:55):
but he has not done that for the Giants as
of late. By the way, the biggest winner according to
ESPN dot Com was Sauce Gardner. Gardner was traded from
(01:12:17):
the Jets to the Colts for two first round picks,
and what's surprising about that is Gardner just signed a
contract worth I think one hundred and twenty million dollars
a year ago, so Sauce Gardner will make his way
to Indianapolis and looking at the standings in the NFL, boy,
this weekend was a big weekend for the Jaguars. I
(01:12:37):
don't know if you watch that game, but Jacksonville survived,
and I do mean survive. They you know Trevor Lawrence,
I tweeted this. Trevor Lawrence has to lead the NFL
in interceptions in the red zone, interceptions in the end zone,
I should say. I mean it seems like every game
(01:12:58):
he's throwing one. Well he threw in this game against
the Raiders, thirty to twenty nine. The final score. The
Raiders went for two, the ball got batted down. What's
crazy is it was nine to six entering the fourth quarter,
nine to six in the entering start of the fourth quarter,
and the final was thirty to twenty nine, both teams,
(01:13:18):
both teams scoring in the overtime a touchdown, and the
Raiders playing for the win. The Jaguars now five and
three overall. They are behind the Indianapolis Colts, who just
made a big move, as I mentioned, getting Sauce Gardner.
The Colts are seven to two and it's been Daniel
(01:13:39):
Jones who's led the way for them this season. But
you know, for the Jaguars, again, I think this is
a surprising result kind of where they are. I like
the changes that they bade on the coaching staff. I
just I can't figure out why Trevor can Sometimes Trevor
can't get out of his own way. But the Jaguars
(01:14:01):
did make a move to hopefully help him out against
the team that they just played, Jacoby Myers. The Jaguars
made a trade to land in the Las Vegas Raiders
receiver in exchange for a fourth and sixth round selection
in the twenty twenty six NFL Draft. So the Steelers
(01:14:23):
had originally shown interest in Myers, and now the Jaguars
have potentially given Trevor another capable receiver. Myers played his
college football at nc State in its seventh season in
the league, the sixty to one hundred and ninety three
pound receiver has thirty three receptions this year for three
(01:14:45):
hundred and fifty two yards and had three receptions excuse me,
four receptions for twenty three yards in the game against
the Jaguars this past weekend. So that's the NFL trade
deadline and some of the moves. I mean, look, there's
(01:15:07):
the thing about the NFL, Unlike, it would be nice
if you couldn't trade picks because it gets all discombobulated
with trades and the picks, and then I'm trading this
pick to that pick and the next thing you know,
(01:15:28):
you look at and there's a team that's like stockpile picks.
Over the years, you see it all the time. It's
really hard to keep up with it because you're trading
a known commodity for a possibility, and that possibility occasionally
doesn't arise for a couple of seasons. Like, I get it,
I understand how it works, but trying to really keep
up with it, especially when you're talking guys two and
(01:15:51):
three years down the line. Yeah, that's tough. Now. One
of the other things that happened this weekend that was
shocking locally Carolina Panthers beating Green Bay sixteen to thirteen.
Green Bay's helmets were spectacular, though they wore some like
(01:16:12):
nineteen thirties throwbacks. I don't know what year. Let me
see if I can find it real real quick. Green
Bay throwback uniform. I loved them. We'd seen these before.
They're clearly airbrushed nineteen twenty three classics. The helmet looked spectacular,
but they played like they were playing nineteen thirties football
(01:16:36):
and not be able to beat the Carolina Panthers. The
Panthers are atrocious, and it was like every chance that
the Packers had to win the game, they just said,
now you know what we'd rather not. No, no, no,
we insist. Oh what you just to turn the ball
(01:16:57):
over near the red zone? Sure we got you. He
need us to take an ill advised fourth down play? Ah, yeah,
no problem, We'll do that. And that was sort of
the story on Sunday as the Carolina Panthers beat the
Jacksonville Jaguars. All right, tonight the first round of the
College Football Playoff. The rankings comes out and nobody will
(01:17:22):
be able to watch it because of the blackout of
ESPN channels on all the YouTube TV. But I'll give
you my thoughts on it when we return. Stay with us.
Speaker 8 (01:17:35):
What have you done for me lately?
Speaker 6 (01:17:39):
It's a fair question.
Speaker 8 (01:17:41):
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Looky for us at Clemson. The answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately? And what have
you done? Always are the same.
Speaker 6 (01:18:01):
We win.
Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
Final segment on Tuesday. You know, the coaching carousel is turning.
Obviously over the weekend, Auburn fired you Freeze, and rumors
are out there that Auburn might be interested in bringing
Jimbo Fisher in as their head coach. Look, I don't
(01:19:14):
know if they'll do it. I don't know what Auburn
fans would think about it. Oddly feels like a good fit.
As I said the other day, though, I think the
LSU thing is is the genius move. But if you
go to Auburn, you could pull the same Shenanigan. Just
don't take much money, Jimbo, make it smart. Make a
(01:19:36):
smart move here. If you're gonna take this job, go
there and say, I'll just take a million bucks and
make it public. A and M is paying me seven
point two for the next six years anyway, So I'm
good with just making a little I'm gonna give it
(01:19:58):
to my staff, we're gonna give it to the you
know what I would have normally made, and we're gonna
win a lot of football games and dude, people will
buy in you, Jimbo, more than anybody right now, I
really think, and to a degree, I guess James Franklin.
With the money he's getting those guys, are those huge
payouts or buyouts or whatever, they can do something that
(01:20:22):
other coaches just can't afford to do. Really, I mean,
they could afford to do it, but they wouldn't. But
he's got the money, all right. College football playoff rankings. Look,
I remember the day. It wasn't all that long ago,
when I was a boy, when I was a young
whipp of schnapper, Clemson was in the college football Playoff.
Speaker 6 (01:20:45):
Holy crap, I am freaking out.
Speaker 2 (01:20:48):
Not anymore, not in the mix, oh man, not in
the mix. But tonight the first round of the college
football playoff rankings will come out, and you know, there's
(01:21:10):
a lot of people speculating, a lot of people speculating
that Indiana is going to be number one based off
of their victory over Ohio State. I just don't know
that that's going to be the case. I mean, I think,
still in the room behind closed doors, metrics matter, but
(01:21:36):
being the defending champs, being undefeated, you know, doing what
Ohio State has done this year, and yes, their schedule
doesn't necessarily live up to perhaps what Indiana's does at
(01:21:58):
this point and what Indiana has done to some of
those teams on their schedule, including some including A I
should say maybe not some, but a common opponent in Illinois.
I still think Ohio State's going to be the number
(01:22:18):
one team now. I think number two is likely going
to be Indiana, and I think they deserve to be
ranked higher than Texas A and M. At this point.
They've got an additional data point because they've played nine
games already. They will certainly be in the top three.
(01:22:40):
But I think Indiana's gonna be number two. I think
Texas A and M will be three. I think Alabama's
gonna check in at four. I think there will be
debate about five and whether or not that will go
to BYU or Georgia. BYU's undefeated strength to schedule isn't great,
but Georgia has a loss, and that loss was to Alabama,
(01:23:04):
so you could justify the Crimson time being four in
Georgia being five. It's still believing that both of them
would beat BYU. But I think in this initial round,
I'm gonna lean in on undefeated, leaning winning the day
between those two at the end, and so I'll say
BYU sneaks into the top five. Georgia six, I'll say
(01:23:26):
Texas Tech actually is sitting above Old Miss at seven.
I'll put Old Miss at eight. I'll put Oregon at nine.
This is where it starts to get a little bit tricky.
Texas has a couple of losses, so does Oklahoma. Notre
Dame as well. You've got eight and one Virginia and
(01:23:46):
seven to one Louisville. But Texas has a head to
head against Oklahoma. So I'll put Texas at ten, Oklahoma
at eleven, and I'm gonna put Virginia at twelve and
Notre Dame at thirteen. I'll put Louisville at fourteen, and
then my fifteenth team, I'll say is Vanderbilt. So that's
(01:24:10):
my top fifteen. And again, you know you got conference
champs and all that. That'll wear it out. But I
got tonight my guests Ohio State one, Indiana two A
and M three, Alabama four, b YU five, Georgia six,
Texas Tech seven, Ole Miss eight, Oregon nine, Texas ten,
Oklahoma eleven. Virginia gets the final spot at twelve, and
(01:24:34):
with that Oklahoma would be bounced I believe by Virginia
in that situation, and there will be a group of
five team in anyway, We'll see how it all shakes
out tonight. We'll talk to you tomorrow. Till then, as always,
I'll take care now and go Tigers.
