Speaker 1 (00:01):
Each time for Clipson Sports Talk with Lawton Swann. Now

you make your way around the great state up South
(01:03):
Carolina and beyond, listening to us on incredible radio stations
like Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred and the Midlands heard
around the world on the iHeart Radio application. Downloaded today,
it's free the website. Put the dot com on a
doll garnet. That's Clemson Sports talt dot com eight O
three four five zero zero eighty six. That is a
(01:26):
text line in the phone line. And of course to
show that Shakespeare south Land brought to you in part
by our good friends over at mets Plumbin mets Plumbin
dot com two six seven one oh eight. This is
two two six seven to one zero eight, all right
out of the gates. On a Tuesday afternoon, a little
(01:47):
talking Tuesday up in Tigertown, Dabo Sweeney met with the media.
We will hear from him as Clemson gets ready to
venture towards Louisville, as Sweeney noted during his press conference,
as a Tuesday in the real world, but a Wednesday
for us, as the Tigers had a quick turnaround getting
ready for this game against Jeff Brohm's Cardinals, a Cardinal
(02:09):
team that came into Death Valley a year ago. And
dare I say maybe more than any home loss that
Clemson has had in recent memory, and there haven't been
many up until this year, but last season, that game
(02:33):
and the way the way the Cardinals controlled that game
against the Tigers was one of the more disheartening losses
that Clemson has had in a long time. I mean,
that was a twelve point loss, thirty three to twenty one.
(02:53):
And forget the games that happened this year, you think
back prior to that ball game, losses at home were
certainly few and far between. But I believe you had
to go all the way back to that lost to
(03:15):
Florida State in twenty thirteen, when the Seminoles went on
to win the national title and go undefeated, to find
a home loss with a margin of twelve points. Well,
(03:35):
this year, you've already had a couple of games that
have gone that way in Death Valley losing by thirteen
to Syracuse and by eleven to SMU And if you
take out the blowout of twenty thirteen when Florida State
(04:00):
beat Clemson fifty one fourteen. To find the next closest
game in Death Valley with a similar lost margin to
what happened against Louisville a year ago, you had to
go back all the way to I think it was
twenty ten when South Carolina came into Death Valley and
(04:22):
put a little beat down on Clemson twenty nine to seven.
I mean, what you witnessed this year, nearly five home losses,
what you witnessed this year in Death Valley has been
pretty sad, and I think in part because of the
(04:43):
way you lost to Louisville at home a year ago.
It sort of tore down these pillars of Clemson's strength
at home, and now they got to figure out how
do rebuild that? How do you how do you get
back to that at home? And then on top of that,
(05:05):
now they have to also answer the bell and figure
out how they will go on the road and when
at Louisville against the team that just took it to
you a year ago at home, out coached out played,
out schemed, and you haven't seen a team in Clemson
(05:26):
this year that presents you with the belief that they
are going to out coach, outplay, or out scheme. Louisville
on Friday seven point thirty is the kickoff on ESPN
as the Tigers and the Cardinals get ready to face
off just a couple of days from today, which is
beyond bizarre. Think about that, we'll get off the air
(05:49):
and then boom Clemson in Louisville under the lights. And
I get it. Why why Dabosweeney and coaches hate this stuff,
hate these Friday nights games. I mean, it's it's terrible
for recruiting if you're the home team, first and foremost,
because you're right in the middle of most high school
(06:12):
playoff rounds across the country. I mean, maybe there's a
maybe there's a state or two that haven't started playoffs yet,
but for most states this would be the playoffs. And
so good players, let me take notes here, tend to
get their teams in the playoffs. And so those good
(06:37):
players aren't traveling to see your campus on a Friday
night if they've got a playoff game or a regular
season game. You know, they're they're just not coming. So
for Louisville, I mean, the guys that might be on
campus would be potentially players whose teams have been eliminated
from the playoffs and don't have anything else to do
(07:00):
on a Friday night outside of that, I don't know
who you're bringing in. And that's one of the reasons
that Dabosweeney is is against it. Not to mention how
difficult it is on fans to get there, uh to
you know, if it forces people to take a day
(07:20):
off from work, that's not good. And for Clemson people,
with this game being in Louisville, I'm not saying that's
not something you can do in a day, but most
people are going up a day earlier, and that takes
potentially another day or half day off work. Like you're
putting in a lot. You're putting in a lot if
(07:41):
you're going to this game on a Friday night, you know,
if it's on a Saturday Saturday evening, you know, similarly,
and you can leave Friday after work. I mean, yeah, yeah,
that's that is what it is. But when when you've
got Clemson playing on the road at Louisville on a
(08:01):
Friday at seven point thirty. I'm not exactly feeling the
I don't get the warm fuzzies about that. As a
fan of the game, whether that's a Louisville Cardinal fan,
whether that's a Clemson fan, just fans in general. Now,
I don't mind Friday night football when it's all my
(08:23):
television set. I mean, I don't mind tuning in and
watching a little Friday night football, but I don't want
my team playing in it. This is the final conference game,
by the way, for Clemson. They're three and four. They
look to get to four and four in league play
after a one to three start to the season back
(08:43):
in August and September. The Tigers have been three and
two in November and December. Still, when you compare that
to what you expect out of this team, that's not outstanding.
But entering the first game of October, the Tigers ranked
one hundred and sixteenth in the nation and scoring offense
averaging just nineteen point eight points per game. Well, they've
(09:05):
averaged thirty four point four over the last five games,
tied for nineteenth best in the nation. The Tigers also
ranked nineteenth in the nation during that five week span
or five game span averaging four hundred forty four point
(09:26):
six yards per game. Now, you might wonder about Friday games.
This is Clemson's sixty sixth Boy, that's tough to say.
Sixty sixth all time game on a Friday. That would
include postseason games as well. They are thirty four, twenty
(09:48):
six and five. Now in regular season Friday games, Clempson
has played fifty two of those and they are twenty
seven twenty and five. And the Tigers are looking to
improve to three to one in Friday regular season games
(10:09):
under Dabo Sweety, including wins at Boston College in twenty
sixteen and Syracuse in twenty twenty one. And while the
Tigers have lost back to back games to the Duke
Blue Devils, they are attempting to avoid being beaten by
(10:32):
the same team in back to back years for the
first time since Florida State beat the Tigers back to
back to back from twenty twelve through twenty fourteen. So
there's a little stat for your tailgate if you are
making your way up to the Derby City and we'll
see if anybody checks in with us on that front.
(10:55):
We put out a graphic a little bit ago, little
Game Week graphic to get that you're geared up for
this matchup at Louisville. I wonder what attendants will look like.
I mean, what will attendants look like for this matchup
as the Tigers head on the road to take on
the Louisville Cardinals and what is certainly a big game
(11:18):
for Clemson. Because I talked about this yesterday, you don't
want to enter the game against South Carolina with a
Bowl berth potentially on the line. You just don't want that,
first and foremost because South Carolina is likely to not
(11:41):
be eligible for a bull at that point. I mean,
South Carolina I believe is going to lose this weekend
in Texas A and M. The biggest benefit they have
is that it is a noon kickoff. By the way,
Jack Veltrie will not be a part of the show today.
Will have him on tomorrow. But the game Cocks are
three and six and one in six in the South
Eastern Conference. They're taking on Texas A and M, who appears,
(12:04):
more than any time in my life to look like
they might be the real McCoy at nine to oh,
six and oh with the potential to make a run
in the college football playoff. I would not pick Texas
A and M to win it all, but they are
eighteen and a half point favorites over the game Cocks.
ESPN's matchup predictor has them projected to win this game
(12:26):
eighty five point three percent of the time. South Carolina
was just a fourteen point seven percent chance. And I
don't think this is gonna be close. I mean, I
think Texas A and M is gonna disrupt South Carolina offensively.
I think the game Cocks will struggle to slow down
(12:50):
a versatile quarterback like Marcel Reid, and I think the
Aggies are gonna give South Carolina their seventh loss of
the season. I think the game Cocks are gonna be
seven and three with two games remaining, meaning the best
they can get is to five and seven. And at
five and seven, you gotta hope there's some sort of
back way into the play or excuse me, to bowl season.
(13:12):
But for Clemson, what you don't want to have happened,
in my opinion, is to go into that South Carolina
game needing a victory, because then you become South Carolina's
bowl game, and then if they win, that feels like
they won their bowl game, and for you, it feels
like you lost the chance to go to yours. So
you go ahead and win this weekend or excuse me,
(13:33):
on Friday against Louisville and you check that box for
we're going to a bowl game, because we're gonna be
Firman next week. Now, no guarantees with this team, with
Furman or South Carolina, but still I would prefer to
be in a situation where I don't have to win
my final two games. If your Clemson to become bowl eligible,
(13:56):
I'd like to be able to win one out of
my final two, and then I think you might win
both of your final two. And for Clemson if they
could turn it around and not only you know, finish
the regular season at seven and five, a game over
five hundred, but to leave South Carolina with a record
(14:22):
of four and eight. Boy, you talk about not being
miles apart but maybe feeling like it. That's where Clipson
fans would be if they could pull that feet off.
But you never know. Maybe the game Cocks go to
Texas A and M and pull an upset. Maybe the
Aggies aren't quite locked in. They got big fish to
(14:44):
fry coming up in a couple of weeks with Texas
and speaking of Southeastern Conference football for a minute. I
saw this stat and I actually had to take a
gander to just double check it because Alabama, right. I
think we can all admit that Alabama is one of
(15:07):
the top teams all time in the history of college football.
But I saw a stat today that I couldn't believe.
Did you know this? Did you know that Oklahoma who
is playing Alabama this weekend? Remember Pridvitables and the Oklahoma
(15:27):
Sooners are facing the Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend? Did
you know that Oklahoma has never been beaten by Alabama
in the regular season? How about that they've never lost. Now,
they haven't played but seven times. Okay, they've not played
(15:49):
but seven times. The first meeting dating back to an
Orange Bowl matchup in nineteen sixty three, which was won
by Alabama. Again post season game, the two teams would
meet up at nineteen seventy in the Blue Bonnet Bowl.
That was a twenty four to twenty four tie. Unbelievable,
(16:11):
we had postseason ties back in the day. In two
thousand and two, the teams met in Norman, Oklahoma, and
Alabama fell thirty seven to twenty seven to the Sooners.
The following year. In the return their return visit to Tuscaloosa,
Oklahoma won twenty to thirteen. To remember, the Sooners would
(16:33):
have been pretty fresh off of a national championship in
two thousand, so they were in their prime under Bob Stoops.
Then in twenty fourteen in the Sugar Bowl, Oklahoma beat
Alabama forty five thirty one. Then the two teams met
in twenty eighteen in the Orange Bowl down in Miami,
with Alabama winning forty five thirty four. And then last
(16:58):
season in late November in Norman, Oklahoma beat Alabama twenty
four to three. The Sooners have never lost to the
Crimson Tide in the regular season. The series is four
wins for Oklahoma, two wins for Alabama, and one tie
(17:18):
dating back to that blue Bonnet Ball that I mentioned
earlier back in nineteen seventy. There can't be too many
teams out there that you could put up against the
Alabama Crimson Tide and say, hey, Alabama's never beat this
team in the regular season. If you've played them in
(17:41):
the regular season, at some point, they've probably beaten you,
but not the Sooners. Somehow, they've managed to avoid that fate.
Three times. They are three and zero in regular season
games against the Crimson Tide and four to two and
(18:02):
one against the Todd All time eight oh three four
five zero zero eighty six. That is the text line
in the phone line. Again, I mentioned it earlier up
in Tigertown. Today it was a talking Tuesday. Dabo Sweeney
a chance to meet with the media. Always appreciate the
opportunity to hear. What he has to say is Clemson
(18:23):
gets ready for their matchup against the Louisville Cardinals also
this week, and I got to do a better job
at this, and because it's a weird short week, I
was thinking about this. One of the things that I
want to do is make sure that we'll try to
get you some audio from the opposing coach. And being
(18:45):
around Jeff Brahm at the ACC kickoff, I can tell
you he's the guy that root for uh. He's a
guy that I like, I really do so well, did
they quick break here on a Tuesday afternoon, will come back,
We'll hear from Dabo Sweeney, We'll get his thoughts on Louisville.
(19:06):
And then don't forget now were number two. We did
not have Jack Veltree with us today, so we'll just
press right through. You know who, it'd be cool to
get up with. I really ought to see, you know what.
I'm gonna text Mike Eva during the break and see
if Mikeyuvia could join us and give us the scoop
on how things are going for him over at Coastal Carolina. Man,
(19:28):
that would be awesome to hear from Mike, just to
kind of catch us up on the goings on the
ends in the outs. You know what his day to
day operations look like. Those sweet Halloween jerseys that the
Chanticleers war and I think Mike might have made his
(19:49):
way up to Bristol, Connecticut to ESPN for that. I
don't know if he was on television. You know what,
I'm gonna text him see if we can get him on.
Keep it locked, rocking and roll along with you on
a Tuesday of Talking Tuesday and Tiger Town Veterans Day
as well. By the way, thank you again to all
of our veterans for your sacrifice, for you know, all
(20:12):
of the time that you spend away from your family
to protect our country and the freedoms that we certainly enjoy.
You know, I think one of the things there's a
lot there's a lot that our country gets right. Okay,
I know there's a lot of dissent and and people,
you know, Republicans and Democrats and everybody, you know, going
(20:33):
head to head all the time, like it seems so
much worse than every did when I was a kid
from that standpoint, but I will say that one of
the things that our country still gets right and has
gotten right for years and years is recognizing, you know,
our military and our veterans, and you know, Memorial Day
(20:57):
and all of the great celebrations that we have. I
am glad and thankful that we live in a country
where we still celebrate all of those positive aspects of
the freedoms that we enjoy here in the United States.
All Right, Speaking of which Dabosweeney did open his statements
(21:19):
today talking about it being Veterans Day. Here's some of
what Sweeney had to say about that and preparation for
what he's seen from the Louisville Cardinals everybody.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
First of all, I know it's Veterans Day today, and
so just want to just thank all of our men
and women that allow us to be here in this
amazing free country that we live in. So just thankful
for the service and the sacrifice for all the great
veterans that we have got a couple on our staff
and Daniel Boyd and Jason LeMay, so I really appreciate
(21:54):
their service. But hey, I know it's Tuesday. In the
real world, it's Wednesday. For the Tigers. It's it's been
a blur. Obviously a late night Saturday night and then
quick turn around on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
You lose a day of prep.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
But I think everybody's really handled it well, staff and
players and you know, getting done what we got to
get done, and you're going on the road, so it
kind of shortens your week even more, but we're excited
about it. You know, Friday night up in Louisville a
great venue. Have been up there, I guess since twenty one,
but been there several times, and I think I think
(22:31):
they're fans do an awesome job of creating a great environment.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Best Clemson. Hey, coach Dabosweeney talking about the Louisville Cardinals
and speaking of their victory last season in Death Valley
thirty three to twenty one. That's the first time that
Louiell was ever beaten Clemson. You know, the two teams
first faced off back in twenty fourteen twenty three seventeen
victory by the Tigers in Death Valley. More on that
game in a minute. But Clemson won the first three
(22:58):
games by slim margins. Points in the first game, three
points in the second game in Louisville in twenty fifteen,
and then six points in that epic matchup between Lamar
Jackson and Deshaun Watson in Death Valley. The margin got
a little bit wider as Clempson began to expand their
brand in twenty seventeen, they won forty seven to twenty one.
In twenty eighteen, seventy seven to sixteen that was a
(23:18):
game in Death Valley, and then forty five to ten
back up in Louisville in twenty nineteen. But the Cardinals,
I always felt when they came into the league, with
the way they were playing Clemson those first three years,
I really thought they were positioning themselves to a subplant,
maybe like an NC State as arrival for Clemson. They
(23:39):
were playing really good football, they were challenging the Tigers.
They had a Heisman Trophy winner in Lamar Jackson, like
all of that, and certainly fell off. But man last season,
Jeff Brom's team punched the Tigers right in the mouth.
Here's Dabo Sweeney earlier today talking about what he's seen
from Jeff Broms team this year.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
And that's a really good football team, a really good team,
two losses in overtime.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
I think they're really well coached on both sides of
the ball.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Probably our worst game last year was it was defensively,
especially was against this this team, so big challenge for
us getting well coached on both sides. Jeff does a
great job, you know, leading this team.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
That's Dabos Whene's overview of the Louisville Cardinals. Here's what
you had to say about the offense that they're getting
ready to prepare for. Unfortunately for Clemson, Isaac Brown doesn't
look like he's expected.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
To go offensively. They're a ball control type offense. A
lot of formations, movements, you know, a lot of outside zone,
a lot of you know, eye candy and movements that
challenge you from a discipline standpoint, gap standpoint. They just
do a great job putting it together. It's it's very
well coordinated, very well put together. They're explosive. They got
(24:52):
ten i think ten plays of fifty plus yards this season.
So got some got some home run dudes at running
back that can that can flat out you know, put
it to you. Just in their last three games, they've
averaged ten point two a carry, six point nine a carry,
four point nine a carry. You know, they're really built
through the run and the play actions and the boots,
all the screens that come along with it. Love to
(25:13):
get the ball to the back. They've got playmakers outside.
Zero must be the number of the year here. So
our zero is really really good. The zero we just
played last week is one of the better players you'll
see in the country. And and man, this kid bell
is he's special. He is a great, great football player.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
You know, they use him in a lot of ways.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
He's a great finisher on the ball, great just collision
balance and body control. They get it to him a
lot of different ways. Five is a really good player.
Two three.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
They've always done a good job with.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
Their tight ends and how they incorporate them into the
play action game.
Speaker 3 (25:53):
So those guys, you know, he Jeff does a great
job of getting.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
In the ball and one of the better offensive lines
that we've played. They play well together, they communicate, manage again,
just a good football team.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
That's Daboswhenny talking about the Louisville Cardinals. All right, we've
got a break coming up at about a minute. But
before we get there, let me remind you about our
friends at Alumni Hall right there on the corner of
campus on College Avenue and downtown Clemson roll. You're officially

you click on the link to Alumni Haul on our website.
All right, quick break, Dabo Sweeney coming back at you.
We'll hear him talking about this Louisville defense and much
(27:10):
more as he met with the media on a talking
Tuesday in Tigertown. As we head into hard to Believe
the tenth game, the tenth game of the regular season
for your Clemson Tigers, man, we just can't wait for
this thing to get here and then boom's gone. All right,
no matter how good or bad it is, it goes fast.
(27:32):
Stay with us, London Swamp back with you on a Tuesday.
Dabo Sweeney meeting with the media earlier today, we heard
before the break some of his comments about what he's
seen from Louisville on offense and again, the health of
Isaac Brown, sophomore running back is going to be key.
(27:53):
I mean, this kid averages eight point six yards per carry,
ninety one carries on the season, seven one hundred and
eighty two yards, five touchdowns, an electric playmaker, and he's
out and injured. And they lost, of course this past
weekend to cal with him out. At that time, they
(28:15):
thought he would be out longer than the Cow game.
And for Clemson probably fortunate maybe that this is on
a Friday, you know, sort of hoping that he won't
be able to go, because if he bounces back and
if he's ready and healthy, you saw what he could
do a year ago. Twenty carries one hundred and fifty
one yards, only one touchdown. He had a big forty
(28:37):
five yard run in the game. That was his second
highest performance of the year. He rushed for one hundred
and seventy eight yards against Kentucky a season ago. And
that dude's quick as a hiccup. He is shifty and
maybe maybe for Clemson catching a break much like Cal
(28:58):
did last weekend. With Isaac around potentially being out, we'll
see where his standings are. Remember, remember the ACC has
that official release that does come out. I searched before
the show to see if anybody had said anything about
his health, and there was nothing other than he was
out for Cal and it could be an extended period
before he returns. Nonetheless, here's Dabosweeney talking about the Louisville
(29:22):
Cardinal defense as the Tigers get ready for this game.
Remember Louisville going into that game this past weekend was
seven and one in four and one in the ACC.
I mean they with what happened to Virginia, they were
tracking back into that conversation and now they've dropped back
(29:44):
and there are what five teams ahead of them in
the league, Georgia Tech who's five and one, Virginia who's
five and one, Pitt who's five and one, SMU who's
five and one, and Duke who's four and one. So
they they kind of let this past weekend losing against
the Cow team that six and four and three and
(30:06):
three in the ACC. Losing that team at home. Mind you,
it's not like you went out to the Cow and got beat.
You were hosting the Bears and got beat on a
fourth down conversion, a risky called by Cal. They went
for it, they got it, could have kicked the extra
or excuse me, could have kicked the field goal, tied
the game and went to double overtime, but nope, they
went ahead and went for it on fourth down and
(30:27):
got it and won the game. And Louisville's got two
losses this season by three points, losing to Virginia in overtime,
losing to Cal in overtime. They're about as close to
undefeated as you can get, Dabos Sweeney saying there were
two plays away from being undefeated. And again they'll host
(30:48):
Clemson on ESPN coming up on Friday. That's a seven
p thirty start. Clemson four and five and fifteenth ranked
Louisville is seven into All right, here's that when he
talked about that Cardinal defense.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
Then over on the defensive side, they're one of the
best defenses in the country.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
Very aggressive, physical upfront.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
There scheme that's gonna challenge you from an aggressiveness standpoint, got.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
To make competitive plays.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
The two ends are really really good players, create a
lot of problems. Fifty is a high, high motor guy
that he just never shuts it off. Twenty three is long,
He's got a lot of a lot of skill to
his game, good pass rusher, he's physical.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
And then the two guys inside man just twitchy.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Maybe not as big inside as some of these guys
we've played the last couple of ball games, but their
twitch here, so they create a little different problems. But
you know again, guys in the secondary's played a bunch
of snaps. They've played a lot of snaps, so they
really understand their scheme.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Dangerous in the return game with number five.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
He's kind of the Waldough of their offense, Like where's
where's Number five? He's he's the Jets guy, he's gonna
touch it in a lot of different ways and then
again involved in the return game. So a very complete
football team again two plays away from being undefeated, so
we'll have to go and play well, but we're looking
(32:15):
forward to it.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
That's Dabo Sweeney giving you the rundown of what he
sees from Louisville. He also talked briefly about his thoughts
again on this clips of Tiger team. We did not
get a chance to hear from him on Sunday no
Sunday teleconference, so it's really the first time we've had
a chance to hear from Sweeney after he got a
chance to watch the tape of that twenty four to
ten victory over Florida State. Here's what he had to
(32:39):
say on that front as well.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Getting proud of our team and how they competed last week.
We did a lot of good things in all three phases,
but still some things that we need to improve and
quickly this week that I know they'll try to take
advantage of if we don't correct some of the things,
especially defensively. A couple of our mistakes from just I
(33:02):
stamp I discipline standpoint, because these guys again they challenge
you a lot with their formations and and bunch sets
and and all that type of stuff. So we'll head
out again. Today's a Wednesday practice for US. Uh, So
we'll held head out on on Thursday in the in
the in the real world.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
Here coming quick, and it should be a great night.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
I think it's gonna be a beautiful night up in Louisville,
and I know we'll we'll have a good crowd show
up too that will travel and some of the people
that live in that region that'll that will hopefully be
able to be there to see the Tigers too.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
So there you go. That's dabos when you talking about
this Clemson Tiger team and hoping that fans will travel
and make their way up. I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued by
what this looks like. You can't you can't deny Clemson
fans showed up for that Florida State game. I mean
that atmosphere, that atmosphere was. But if you didn't know
(33:58):
any better, you think Clemson was like a nine and
two team or last too many games Swani a seven
and two team, right like you, you would have thought
looking at it that Clemson had a much better record,
and to show up at home is one thing. To
(34:18):
show up on the road is another. I do not
disagree that people that live in that area will be there.
That's that's just a fact. Because when you live in Louisville,
or you live in Boston or anywhere near Boston, if
you get a chance to go to Boston and watch Clemson,
(34:41):
or technically Chestnut Hill to watch the Tigers play against BC,
you're gonna do it. Same thing in Miami. But a
Friday night. How many people are showing up for that
from the Louisville area to support Clemson. I think it's
a good question, and only time will tell. We'll find
(35:01):
out in a few days. All right, quick break, we'll
come back. We'll jump into some of the Q and
a portion with Dabo Sweeney and the media right after
this final sament of our number one the show the
Shakespeare south Land, by the way, got back or Mike,
you'vea got back with me? Mike's gonna join us an
hour number two. We'll talk about his job at Coastal Carolina.
We'll find out how that's going. We'll get his thoughts
with South Carolina and Coastal playing here in a couple
(35:23):
of weeks, he'll certainly be back over in the Midlands
and just kind of get a vibe for the new
gig and what it's like being back in South Carolina.
It's been several weeks. Mike could probably tell us exactly.
I can't tell you. I'm gonna give him grief though,
because Clemson's lost more games I think since he's been
(35:46):
at Coastal than they did the whole time he was
on the air with me. So there you go. Anyway,
Dabo Sweeney met with the media earlier today and talked
about this Louisville Cardinal team and of course the Tigers
as well. But Sweeney was asked to kind of reflect
after the Florida State game how he felt the team
maybe made adjustments in game and and so that there
(36:10):
weren't so many busts when there was like misdirection or
things like that in that Florida State matchup.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
It's just communication.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
They were better, and and I just you know, we
changed a couple of things on just how we were
meeting and stuff, and I think that helped them a
little bit. But I was very impressed with how they
communicated all throughout the game. You could just kind of
sense it. They just playing, they're playing with more confidence.
But you know, and it's not just the secondary, it's
(36:38):
the backers. I mean, we we've got to just not
get caught up in you know, like the fourth and
two for example. You know that's not a hard play,
but sometimes you can. You can get so caught up
in the situation of its fourth and two and you're like, well,
they're not going to throw it, and there goes there
goes your guy. So you have to just just truly
(36:59):
being discipline with your process. You know, there's a process
every play, and then the process shouldn't change. It doesn't
if you're a linebacker, a receiver, a corner, a quarterback,
there's a process every single plays. One of the things
we try to teach these guys is the process doesn't change.
It doesn't speed up. If you just stick to it,
(37:20):
then it slows the game down for you. Whether it's
fourth and two or it's you know, overtime or it's
the first quarter, it doesn't change. And sometimes you know,
you can you can get a little you can let
the situation change your process and you can go from
you know A to E without you know, B, C
(37:40):
and D and that's where your mistakes happen. So I
think that's where we just got to truly just trust
our eyes, trust the process that you've been taught. And
because again we I thought, I thought defensively and it
was one of our better games. I mean when when
eleven guys on the same page and they were relentless,
(38:01):
I mean, they really affected the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
You know, they had us on. There was one call
I would.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Say just they just had a we just were we
were in a bad call. But then there was a
couple other times where we just we just either didn't communicate.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
Well or our eyes just we weren't on the right thing.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
And sometimes we overplayed some things, whether it was a
three deep guy and they got a double post with
a wheel, that's that puts a lot of strain on you.
So just just some discipline and again just being committed
to a B C D E like that don't change.
And that's at every single position, every position, and if
you just stick to that creates consistency and then you
(38:42):
don't get sped up when when some critical down comes you.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
It's the same that's Clemson head coach Dabo Sweeney earlier
today in Tigertown. You know. He was also asked about
Kay club Nick. Remember club Nick a couple of weeks
ago was out for that Duke game because of an
ankle injury, and then leading up to the Florida State game,
he had a quad injury that we really didn't know
about until after the game. And here's Sweeney kind of
(39:08):
giving an update on where Kate is help wise at
this point.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Yeah, ankle's good.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
I mean, he didn't really have any problems in the
game from the ankle. Uh, but that he just he
could hardly walk last week because of the his his
thigh was so just swollen and blowing up. Got better
each day, and sure enough he was right. He was
ready on game day. He's he's a lot better. I mean,
he's a lot better than he was this time last week.
(39:35):
Couldn't even practice, So he's, uh, he's doing doing better debo.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
Sweeney was also asked about the announcement that Dennis Love
would be promoted to the head of strength and conditioning
at Clemson following the retirement of Joey Batson. Here's what
Sweeney had to say about that change.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Yeah, we didn't have a choice.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
It was either that or he's going to be the
strength coach for the Vikings right right then, and so
we h yeah, we we that was an easy decision
and knew eventually that might happen, but it wasn't exactly sure,
you know, with Joey.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
And then Joey decided that this was gonna be it.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
And uh again, Joey, as y'all know, I had has
had had to battle some some help things and and
then the Vikings thing came along, and you know, he
interviewed for the job and was off of the job
and and you know, it was a I mean, it's
really unbelievable. It's really unprecedented. There's only thirty two of
those jobs. But for him to stay here and you know,
(40:36):
so we had to kind of work that out in
the summer. He's excited and we're all excited. This has
been a dream job for him. And uh, he's been
around multiple places NFL, different schools, but he's he is
he's one of the most respected guys out That's that's
why he that's why he had the opportunity to go
be a one of thirty two NFL guys. You know,
it's just who he is. His reputation guys come from
(40:59):
all over to train with him. You know, he said
that he's done that for years. So I'm happy for
him and glad it worked out. And that was that
was a tough twenty four hours for him, you know too,
to make a decision like that, and but yeah, it
all worked out and and you know, Joey's excited, the
(41:19):
players are excited, and so he'll he'll he'll take it
over in January. And yeah, but that's been, that's been.
That's not new news. Uh, that's been the same news
since the summer.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
So there you go. That's some of Dabo Sweeney again
talking about Dennis Love taking over once Joey Batson's career
concludes in December, and we'll see. You know, I remember
when Joey Batson was considered the issue and then all
of a sudden he wasn't you were winning a bunch
of football games, you remember those days? Yeah, the ebbs
(41:51):
and flows of fandom and the nuttiness of online posting.
All right, coming up, Mike Eva from Coastal Airline. It's
gonna be hard for me to say that and not
say from game Cock Central, where he worked previously, but
we're gonna talk with Mike today about coast of the
new job, how all that's going, and much more. Plus
(42:12):
and hour number two. I think we'll give you a
little bit more from Dabo Sweeney. I feel like we
short changed you a little bit. Get out the way, Swanny,
sometimes you talk too much. Fair. We'll be right back.
It's time for Clipson Sports Talk with Lowton Swan. It
(43:06):
is our number two. That's drivetime right here on the
Show That Shakespare South Lay and Clympson the sports Salt
Lord and Swan ain't know with you on the guest line.
Coming to Mikeyova from Coastal Carolina, joining the program, looking
forward to chatting with him about his time and conways
(43:27):
so far. He is the associate at Leke Directed for
Communications in Media. How about that? Shuts up, Mike Eva.
That's right, we'll get the am momentarily and again. The
Show That Shakespare South Ayma brought to you in part
by our good friends over at mets Plumbing mets plumbing
dot com two two six seven one oh eight. That's
(43:47):
two two six seven to one zero eight mets plumbing
dot Com. Mike Buddy, welcome back.
Speaker 4 (43:57):
It feels good to be back, Swannie Listen.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Man, congratulations, I mentioned it before you came on. I mean,
obviously our listeners know you well from your work you
did covering South Carolina, but now the associate athletic director
for communications in media Coastal Carolina, and you kind of
told us that news on the air when you were
here with us. Man, how's it going? Fill us in?
(44:21):
I mean, how's the job been so far?
Speaker 4 (44:23):
No, it's been a lot of fun. I mean, certainly,
it's one of those positions where you got to learn
and you're going to continue to learn something new each day,
and when you feel like you're at a spot where
it's like, all right, I'm starting to get the hang
of this, there's going to be something new that pops up.
But that's a good thing in all seriousness though, and
trying to compare it to something, I feel like it's
(44:46):
a combination of being a reporter combined with being back
when I was playing football and being around a team.
And the reason I say that is I feel like
I'm getting the best of both worlds by being able
to tell stories of our student athletes. And there's going
to be more that we're going to be putting out
as we continue to get this thing rolling. But on
(45:07):
top of that, I'm around the players, I'm in the
locker room after games, I go to practice, I'm with
the coach and with with these guys talking about stuff,
whether it be during our trips when we will hit
the road there are some flights, which is obviously much
different than the reporter of life. When you're going to
travel a game, the highlight would be a stop at BUCkies.
(45:29):
Now you know, you hop on a plane and you
have a bunch of food at your disposal before you
hop on. So uh, it's it's been totally eye opening opening,
to say the least. But on top of it all,
the best part about it, certainly with being able to
work with football, is that we're winning. When you're around
any team that's winning, it's want of You know this
from covering teams. I experienced it during my time, whether
(45:52):
it be the the game Cocks, whether I be up
in Boston covering the Patriots. Figures, as soon as I leave,
the Patriots start winning. It is certainly much much much
more fun when you're around a team who is winning.
Speaker 1 (46:04):
Yeah, look I said this, I think Clemson has lost
more games Mike says, you left our show to go
do the work with uh Coastal Carolina than they did
the whole time that you were on with me.
Speaker 5 (46:15):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (46:16):
Well, I don't know. Maybe that's the saving grace for
game Cock fans, because the joke on social media with
a bunch of them have been that that I've cursed
them since I've left. I will say this, you know, obviously,
and I say this jokingly. I think since I've arrived here,
Coastal has gone five and one. Obviously, I don't do
(46:38):
anything in terms of I don't know if you know this, Swanny,
I haven't thrown a pass all season. I haven't crod
yess or you know, thrown or caught one. But but no,
it's it's it's been a lot of fun, obviously, it's
it's tough to see what's going on right now with
South Carolina and Clemson. And I say that because certainly
from my time of covering both schools had into the
(47:00):
season so much hype, optimism, and you know, certainly that
that last game of the year, which will still be
a lot of fun to watch, regardless, there was certainly
a lot of anticipation of going into the season. So
you know, I'm excited still to be able to watch
that game, and obviously we've got to play the game
Cocks in two weeks when we go to Williams Brice.
Speaker 1 (47:22):
Mike, you have on Twitter at Mike Underscore UVA again
working over at Coastal Carolina as one of the assistant
athletic directors. Man, it's pretty awesome. And I think you
had a chance to go up to Bristol, Connecticut for ESPN.
I believe, Mike, is that correct in the haunt to
clear jerseys that you guys had give us some insight
into that.
Speaker 4 (47:41):
Yeah, just like I drew it up Swanny as soon
as I got out of TV, I get to live
out my dream of being a tender for a couple
of seconds. So but no, that was that was really neat.
So Gary Streiski and then you also have Randy Scott,
two guys that have Boston ties. Gary and I have
known Gary coincidentally or ironically, whatever way you want to
(48:04):
phrase it. I met Gary at the National Championship out
in Santa Clair and some may remember that at that
time Gary was a reporter for ESPN. Through Snapchat, they
were trying something new. And it's funny because there's some
people here that are a little bit younger than me
and they say, oh, that's where I remember Gary. Gary
(48:25):
used to be a sideline reporter for the Red Sox
back in the day, so when he was at Ness
and that's how I got to figure out who he was.
But then we got to meet each other the national
championship when Clempson beat Alabama for that second time, and
we've been in contact ever since. So Randy, like I said,
he's got ties to Boston. We've all kind of talked
(48:46):
with each other over the years, and when this Jersey
idea came up, I told him earlier in the week
and he's like, hey, why don't you come on up.
I mean, wyt't you ship him up? That'd be great,
And unfortunately he didn't get back to me until Friday.
So it's just like, well, we can't send them up
in time because it has to be there early for
Saturday morning. So talk to it some of the people
(49:08):
in the building, and of course Chance Miller, the ad here,
the old associate ad in health Caroline. He's like, why
don't you just fly up so school put me on
a plane and I flew right up. I was only
probably there for like eighteen hours, and I came right
back and we were able to get on Sports Center
and create some more positive publicity for our program at
(49:29):
our university.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
Man, really cool, really awesome. Again, Mike, you've all on
Twitter at Mike underscore UVA and those jerseys. If you
haven't seen them, go getting Mike's Twitter feed and scroll
down just a few days back to November the sixth.
He's got some behind the scenes videos. The State newspaper
covered them as well. The hunt of Clears is how
I'm saying it, because you know, I don't want there.
(49:51):
I don't want the coach. I don't want the baseball
coach to come after me.
Speaker 2 (49:55):
Remember this, everybody say it with me, shut to Clears shot.
Speaker 1 (50:01):
I gotta keep it. I gotta make sure I get
it right. So it's haunted Clears, it.
Speaker 4 (50:05):
Is haunted Clais. And I'll say this obviously, Swanna. You
know me very well. I love football season. I am
not trying to get football to be over anytime soon.
But I will say though, I am.
Speaker 5 (50:20):
Really, really, really really looking forward to baseball season because
the two sports I overlook all the all the sports
here when it comes to communications with the two that
I work with hand in hand, or football and baseball,
and obviously anyone that's.
Speaker 4 (50:33):
Paid attention to what's gone on over the last decade
in Conway, it speaks for itself, and just even last year,
certainly right with Kevin Shanall in his rookie year, so
being able to be around him just a little bit.
He's a very intense guy. But what I love about him,
and I'm sure I'm going to learn more about this,
but I'm quickly learning he holds everyone to the same standard,
(50:54):
whether it be a player, whether it be a coach,
whether it be myself, support staff, whatever. He views everyone
as a key part to the engine. And you know
certainly that, certainly that that's going to create some long
days and long nights. But at the same time too,
it's pretty cool because you know, again you have a
(51:15):
guy that truly cares and I'm.
Speaker 5 (51:18):
Glad that he's the coach here at Coastal.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
It's gonna be fun.
Speaker 1 (51:22):
Now, Mike, going back to your comment about going up
to Bristol for ESPN, Now, did you know that Matt Barry,
who's on ESPN, was on our station fourteen day am
here in Columbia. Yes, back in the day.
Speaker 4 (51:33):
So the thing about so the thing about Matt, I
actually left him a little note on his desk because
maybe some of your viewers don't know this. He is
the godfather of the owner of Village Idiot. His kids,
Brian Glenn and Brian Glunn and Matt are very very
good friends. And as you can imagine, back during those
lt X days, he would go over to Village Idiot
(51:54):
quite frequently. And actually Randy Scott remembered Village Idiot very well.
And I have the word village Idiot because of Matt's connection.
So yeah, Matt did obviously was oh goodness, I don't
want to butcher it. Barn helped me out. Barn house, barnyard.
Speaker 1 (52:11):
They would say barnyard, Yeah, they would say barnyard. It
was Matt and Tim back in the day. Yeah, barnyard. Yeah. Listen, man,
that's been a while. That's before, that was before I
was on That's how long that's been. And I've I've
been on the radio for over twelve years.
Speaker 4 (52:26):
That's awesome. Now, Matt's that's a great guy. And you
know when when he comes down to do the Masters
he has typically stopped in Colombia to go see Brian
Glenn and during my time in Colombia, we'd head on
over the village and we'd all hang out. So, you know,
it's really cool to see that he you know, and
(52:47):
we've seen this a lot, right, I mean there's so
many different for Craig Melvioyn right, just all the the
people that come through Columbia. But it's pretty cool still
when people come back and they appreciate their roots or
not just even Columbia, but just throughout the state of
South Carolina.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
Yeah, no doubt about it. Again, Mike, you've was on
Twitter at Mike Underscore UVA again you can keep up
with him and everything going on with the Coast of
Carolina Chanta Clears as he is now the Associate Athletic
Writer for Communications and Media. So Mike, give us, you know,
the listeners that have followed you here when you're talking
about the game cops. Give us some insight into your
(53:21):
day to day operations, Like what does that look like
for you a typical day in this new job. I
know you mentioned learning a lot, but like what time
are you in the office and what are your main
kind of priorities on the daily basis.
Speaker 4 (53:35):
Yeah, it certainly varies depending on if we're I have
a home game, if we have an away game, if
we have a nationally televised game, because a lot of
the games we play on is on ESPN Plus. But
we were on ESPN two last week against Marshall or
should say a week and a half ago, and then
we'll be on the SEC network in a week when
(53:56):
we travel to Columbia to play the game Cops. But
it's one of those things where you get here at
nine am. Typically Mondays, there's just meeting after meeting, after
meeting after meeting. You have a couple of times, a
couple of times you got to swing by the football
office talk with the football coach. They do a zoom
press conference with a sunbelt on Mondays. You know, collect
(54:16):
different things. But we have the depth chart, so you
do stuff like that. And Monday, like I said, the
day itself kind of flies by just because there's so
many meetings. You do different game notes throughout the week.
Like today, that's really what I.
Speaker 5 (54:27):
Was focused on.
Speaker 4 (54:28):
We introduced and announced our new men's soccer coach. We
have a new head soccer coach coming from Virginia from
UVA so o Uva, Uva. And he's a Massachusetts guy.
You can't make this up. So Adam Caron is going
to be coming down here excited for him. So you know,
you do stuff like that. But it's I will say,
(54:49):
it's you go into the day thinking, Okay, this could
be a slow day. Certainly I didn't think that today,
and then the next thing, you know, five things will
come across your So it's truly one of those things
were And this is what I like about it, Sawny,
is that I can't and God bless the people that
are okay with it. I can't be the type of
(55:11):
person that goes in and I know exactly what's going
to happen each and every single day. I'll lose my
absolute mind, you know what I mean, kind of like
that Groundhog Day kind of feels. So it's different though,
because it's like today, writing a lot of game notes
and been at my desk for most of the day,
which typically doesn't happen. You know, I'll head out to
(55:32):
practice like tomorrow, probably head on over to practice before
the press conference. We do press conferences on Wednesday with
our student athletes and our head football coach, so you know,
back into the week, it can slow down a little bit.
We have the coaches show tonight basketball game here, so
it's just again, I know, I'm all scattered all over
(55:52):
the place, but that's kind of the best way to
describe it. And I think what's helped me the most,
which I'm even shocked with myself. I have so many
whiteboards in here, I just write every single thing down.
When I have something come in, I'm like, all right,
I gotta do that. That way, my goldfish brain over
here it's able to remember. Okay, we still have to
(56:13):
do that because I got the memory of a goldfish sometimes.
So no, it's it's it's been a lot of fun.
I think my favorite thing that was just being able to,
you know, to be close to the team and especially
seeing what these guys have put in. And you know,
it's been fun these this last month. I mean, a
four game winning streak, five and one in conference play.
(56:34):
Win this week, then we're playing for a divisional championship
that last week against James Madison for a chance to
play in the Sun Belt Championship. It's it's fun times.
Plus are both eligible, so I don't know, Swanny. I mean,
maybe we're in Boca Raton. I don't know where exactly
we might have a chance to go to, but hopefully
it's somewhere warm. That's all I can ask for.
Speaker 1 (56:53):
Yeah, thanks for bringing the cold weather down to South
Carolina for Mike again, Mike, you'va from coastal Carolina with this. Today,
the Chanta Clears go on the road to State spur
to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles. And a little
connection there, Mike. You might have seen it the Sun
Belt Conference Special Special Teams Player of the Week Trip Bryant,
(57:15):
the former field goal kicker at River Bluff who is
a freshman down there at Georgia Southern and was, you know,
good friends with my son in the soccer program over
at River Bluff. So kind of crazy to see, you
know that, coming full circle of the week that you
guys are getting ready to travel down there and face
off against Georgia Southern. Speaking of the Sun Belt Conference
(57:37):
and the way you guys have played, you mentioned it
man four game winning streak and five and one. I
would imagine there's the energy and the buzz around that
team right now down in Conway is phenomenal.
Speaker 4 (57:51):
No, it's it's a lot of fun, and it's and
I don't want to say it's night and day because
it's like I think some people would probably think like, oh,
them around must have been low when.
Speaker 5 (58:00):
It was early on.
Speaker 4 (58:01):
I mean like, no, I think more than anything, it
was just like, hey, this team's figuring it out.
Speaker 3 (58:07):
You know.
Speaker 4 (58:07):
I still talk with a lot of people over in
South Carolina, whether it be you know, I caught my
old colleagues at game Cock Central and I've had people
asking like, what's just the difference. Is there anything crazy
about it? I said, I think more than anything is
that you had sixty one new players and you're trying
(58:28):
to figure things out. And I think that's the crazy
things Twantie. You know, we look at certainly when we're
talking about Clemson in South Carolina, because you're get at
two power for conference schools, Like I totally get that.
But I think what we lose sight of is how
much the transfer portal revshar how much it's impacting these
group of five, group of six programs, not just from
(58:48):
the fact that Okay, you know, some of these guys
will move on, they'll go play Okay, that's that's great.
That's part of it. We understand that. But at the
same time too, you still have to feel the team.
So you have sixty one new players and you look
across the conference and I mean not that I include
point spreads in my game notes, but I think it's
(59:09):
real funny.
Speaker 3 (59:10):
You know.
Speaker 4 (59:10):
You look at the majority of the wins that we've
had during this wind streak. I mean, shoot, even going
back before the wind streak, like ten plus point underdogs
on the road, and it really means absolutely nothing. So
I say that to say that I feel like for
this conference more than anything. Certainly, Okay, later in the year,
teams are starting to get figured out a little bit more,
(59:31):
but you truly have no idea about these teams because
there's so many new faces, not just at our school
but across the board. I know that was certainly the
case that James Madison, with my old head coach Bob
Chesney and the phenomenal job that he's done to get
the Duke's ranked now in his second year with the program,
after I let's call for what it is, Kurt Signetti,
(59:54):
he gutted the program. You know, he took he took
what he wanted from James Madison over to Indiana out
for them. But you know, for the schools in the
Sun Belt and these Group five, Group six schools, it's
really difficult to be able to have success early on
when you have so many new faces and you're going
out and you're playing those games against bigger schools like
(01:00:16):
we did. We played Virginia week one, and who would
have thunk it right that Virginia would have the type
of year that they've had, even though they you know,
obviously coming off a tough loss the other day.
Speaker 1 (01:00:24):
To wait, all right, that's Mike, you've We'll put him
on hold, we'll come back, we'll get a little bit more,
We'll hear a little bit more from him, and then
we'll talk a little more football, focusing on the Louisville
Cardinals and much more here on the program again to
this Clemson sports star right here. Well, Fox Sports Radio
fourteen hundred the Midlands and of course around the world
on the iHeartRadio app. Yeah, looking at Coastal Carolina, I mean,
(01:00:48):
they got out of the gates a little slow. The
season fell at Virginia forty eight to seven. They beat
Charleston Southern thirteen to nothing. Certainly not a you know,
not a performance that I'm sure fired up Chanticleer faithful.
Then got crushed by East Carolina thirty eight nil. They
bounced back against South Alabama thirty eight to twenty, and
(01:01:10):
then got hammered by Old Dominion forty seven to seven.
And I am sure that at that point, sitting at
two and three, with the struggles that they had had,
people were highly concerned about this team. But they've turned
it around, won four games in a row, and three
of those four games they have scored forty or more points.
(01:01:30):
They beat Louisiana in road twenty three to eight. That
was in Conway. Then they went on the road to
Boon and beat Apps State forty five thirty seven. They
TOPPT Marshall forty four to twenty seven at Brooks Stadium
there in Conway, and then they beat Georgia State last
weekend at home forty to twenty seven. They go on
the road to Georgia Southern on Saturday. That's a six
(01:01:54):
o'clock kickoff down in the lower part of Georgia. What
do they call it? Call that the low country Georgia.
What do y'all call that?
Speaker 3 (01:02:03):
Man?
Speaker 1 (01:02:03):
I know we call it the low country in South Carolina?
Is that the low country of Georgia? What are the
regions of Georgia? I have no idea. All right, what
a break. We'll come back with more from our conversation
with Mike Eva right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen
hundred and of course around the world on the iHeart
radio applications. Stay with us. Back at it on a Tuesday,
(01:02:23):
Lawton Swan, Clemson Sports called Mike Eva on the guest
on Mike. Final couple of things with Mike Youva again
from Coastal Carolina, you guys remembering from his time covering
South Carolina with Gamecock Central. Also here in the Midlands
over at watch Fox back in the day. Let me
ask you about this game Cock team just a little bit.
And I know you've got to play them in a
couple of weeks, and you know the reason to give
(01:02:43):
me bulletin board material. But are you surprised to see
where they are right now?
Speaker 3 (01:02:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:02:47):
That's exactly what I need, right you know, the director
of communications giving Shane Beemer and the game.
Speaker 1 (01:02:54):
Wow that listen while he's pinned, while he's pinned on
your toy their page for your engagement to your fiance.
So yeah, I think you're I think you're clear here,
but I mean, how surprised are you of what you've seen?
Speaker 4 (01:03:08):
Well, well, I'll say this, there are people even here.
I mean it's you have people that pay attention all
day trying to find stuff like this stuff. So not
that I'm going to give any bulletin little Manteria, because
I know they have plenty of resources over the US. See,
I think I'm surprised. I think I'm surprising the sense
that the offense wasn't able to capitalize based off of
(01:03:29):
the straints of Leonoris. I think, you know, going into
the season, I had some question marks about the team.
I think Gamecock Central and it's on the website, so
so it's not like I'm saying anything, you know, put
put on a bulletin board. But I projected this team
to have eight wins, seven to eight wins, simply because
you had to replace so much production on the defensive side,
six starters, six starters on the defensive side. I hate,
(01:03:54):
I hate seeing what's.
Speaker 1 (01:03:55):
Going on over there.
Speaker 4 (01:03:57):
I know that they haven't been able to stay healthy
up front. I know game tuck In, who roll their
eyes when I say that, But I think that certainly
has played a part of it, and you know, it
just thinks not seeing Lenoris be able to take that
next step. I mean, I went to two games this year,
went to the Kentucky game, I went to the Alabama game.
They're they're better than what their record says they are.
I know that's no moral victory. I know that's not
(01:04:19):
going to make anyone feel good, necessarily in Colombia. But
they've they've been in games. They just haven't been able
to put it all together. And I think that's probably
the most frustrating part. I'm sure for Shane and I
don't want to speak for another program, but you know
the former reporter in me that it's hard not to
look at it that way. In knowing him and knowing
(01:04:41):
that program, I'm sure that's one of the first things
that he would.
Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
Tell you mm hm, And what have you thought about
Clemson and what you've seen for them this year? Kind
of from the outside looking in.
Speaker 4 (01:04:50):
I think with Clemson, I mean similar in the sense
that you have a quarterback with so much hype around it,
right he's able to take that that step forward. I
mean think we're things were a couple of years ago.
I mean people are ready to get ridiciated, right, but
he was able to do some good things last year.
I mean, it's unfortunate. It's unfortunate that they haven't both teams,
(01:05:12):
they haven't been able to capitalize off of some good
things last season with both their quarterbacks. And you know,
certainly when you look at Clemson, you think of just defense,
and at times this year you're looking at just like
who is this team? You know, And that's not a
slap in the face, but it's just the reality of it,
because we just haven't seen the lackluster performances defensively from
(01:05:34):
this program like we have this season. And I think
that's the thing that surprises me more than anything is that,
you know, Clumpson would always find themselves in games late
mainly because their defense was always able to keep them
in there, right, They were always able to keep them
in there. And then you know, kind of like the
Tom Brady effect in a sense, towards the end of
the game, you found yourself seeing the other team kind
(01:05:56):
of you know, maybe maybe they got a little nervous, right,
they got a little nervous, and they would make a
mistake and Cumpson would always capitalize off it well. When
you're not in the same boat right now, when your
defense isn't able to give you that same kind of
bump what they've been able to for the last decade plus,
you're starting to see what's happened this year unfortunately for
the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (01:06:13):
Yeah, it's been it's been weird for me to digest
at all, because, you know, it's it's kind of like
the old cartoon when there'd be like a leak in
the damn and you plug one hole and then he'd
come out of another and then you know, and the
guys standing there and he's got his toe it like,
that's what it feels like. The games where Clymps's offenses
played well, there've been, you know, the defenses let him down.
(01:06:34):
The games where the defense has played well, the offense
has let him down. And they look like a team.
And I think South Carolina similar They both look like teams.
If they could get it right on both sides of
the ball at the same time, they'd be really good
football teams. Unfortunately, they're just you remember, it's just a
mismatch of issues for both teams. Really, but man, my congratulations, dude,
(01:07:00):
I know you're excited I know, I know you're glad.
I know your wife's glad to be back. I'm sure
in the state of South Carolina, near and closer to
her family. But man, keep up the great work. We
are so thankful we got a chance to catch up
with you, and heck, maybe we can do it again
next week as you guys get ready to roll into
Columbia to take on the game Cocks.
Speaker 4 (01:07:19):
Yeah, I'll just do my best of being corporate mic
and not giving Shane and the crew anything to be
able to clip to put on the board. You know,
this is what the director of coms is saying over
there again, that would go over really.
Speaker 1 (01:07:31):
Well in this athletic. He better put the director of
comms because if he puts Mike Eva, people will go,
that's your buddy, Mike Eva.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
I will say this, I will. I will say this,
the same guy that cooked up my mix and a
water T shirts.
Speaker 5 (01:07:47):
We have a T shirt specifically for.
Speaker 4 (01:07:49):
This game coming out next week. Now, no seal, but
they will be coming out. I will be tweeting it
Tuesday morning for Kill Tuesday, as we do over here,
kill Tuesday. Something they started over here, Coach, you will
see that Tuesday morning on my Twitter account. Cut some shirt.
Speaker 1 (01:08:04):
Okay, I'll be locked in looking forward again. Follow on
Twitter at Mike underscore. Uva, Mike, you'va hard for me
not to say it. I had to bite my tongue
because I wanted to say from game Cock Central, but
he's not. He's from Coastal Carolina. He's the Associate athletic
director for Communications and Media. Did I get it right,
(01:08:24):
Mike off the top of the dome.
Speaker 4 (01:08:26):
Yeah, I'm yeah. I'm still learning how to say. It's
a moultiful.
Speaker 1 (01:08:31):
Be good, buddy, take care, appreciate you.
Speaker 4 (01:08:33):
Swani.
Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
There you go. That's Mike. You'va hanging out with us
here on the program on a Tuesday afternoon. Always great
to catch up with him, all right? Eight zero three
four five zero zero eighty six does the text line
in the phone line, And again, don't forget about our
friends in Alumni Hall right there on the corner of
campus on College Avenue, downtown Clemson for all your officially
licensed Clemson merchandise, hats, t shirts, Telgate, Gary Moore go
(01:08:58):
check him out today or online. It'll Alumni Hall dot com.
It's Alumni Haul where Tiger fans shop, all right, We've
got some more from Dabosweeney coming up for you here
on the program. In just a minute plus, we got
Jamal apparently on the guest line. We'll jump into that
conversation out of the gates though when we return, then
(01:09:18):
we'll hear some more from coach Sweeney as it was
a talking Tuesday up in Tigertown today as Clemson gets
geared up for their matchup this weekend excuse me Friday
against the Louisville Cardinals. Stay with us, don't go anywhere,
and remember we have podcast editions of the show that
are always available, and you can be a part of
(01:09:40):
the program anytime, anyplace, anywhere on our website, Clemson sports
Talk dot com. That's Clemson sports Talk dot com. All right,
we'll be right back with more the show that Shakes
of south Land on a Tuesday afternoon. Back at it,
Lowton Swan on a Tuesday day. Jamal joins us on
(01:10:02):
the guest line. Jamal, Welcome in, Buddy, How are you Jan,
How are you man? I'm great. It's good to talk
to you. What's on your mind today, Buddy?
Speaker 6 (01:10:11):
What do you think of that Clemson game on Saturday?
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
Man?
Speaker 6 (01:10:13):
Do you think we can make a ball game.
Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
Oh God, Lee, I tell you, I think it's still
a coin flip. They played better. Uh, Like I said
on Monday, you know, I think that a good team
would beat Clemson with the way they played. I didn't
think they were as sharp as they needed to be.
But this, you know, I think the quick turnaround Jamal
is big. Going up to Louisville on Friday, Uh, this feels.
(01:10:38):
This feels good so far. I think, what do you think?
You think this team will make a bowl game? They
gotta win, you know, two of their final three.
Speaker 6 (01:10:46):
I think they'll make one.
Speaker 1 (01:10:48):
Okay, now what if they what if they were to
lose to Louisville this week? Do you think they could
beat Furman and South Carolina? Do you think they can
get both of those games too?
Speaker 7 (01:10:57):
Or is it?
Speaker 1 (01:10:58):
This is it? You gotta win this one.
Speaker 6 (01:11:01):
I don't know about being South Carolin'm not but South
Carolina playing that great either.
Speaker 1 (01:11:07):
You're right about that? You're right about that. Yeah, we'll
see how it goes. I think they probably make a
bowl game, but I think it's a coin flip still
at this point. They just like I said, you know
earlier talking with Mike you'va here on the show today.
They haven't played great on both sides of the ball consistently,
and that's a problem.
Speaker 6 (01:11:28):
Yeah, I'm shocked by people like Peter wads in j Pikers.
Speaker 1 (01:11:33):
Oh yeah, major letdown, major letdown. And Tom Allen should
go already.
Speaker 6 (01:11:41):
He has been in great farming.
Speaker 1 (01:11:44):
Well, you're right, but I feel like the pieces aren't there.
It's kind of like, this is the way I see it.
Let's say he's a good chess player, but he's got
bad pieces. Let's see what happens when he gets his
pieces on the board. Well, hey, Jamal man, it's great
hearing from you. Thanks for the phone call, buddy, and
thank you for listening.
Speaker 6 (01:12:01):
All Right, I hate it, but you YouTube de probaminations
things like Swing TV. It's got ESPN, one, two, and
three in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
That way, who's got who's got those channels?
Speaker 6 (01:12:15):
Swing TV? It's much cheaper. It's about forty dollars in mine.
Speaker 1 (01:12:19):
There you go. Sling have you been Have you been
with Sling for a while or did you switch from YouTube?
Speaker 6 (01:12:26):
I've been with Sling for a while.
Speaker 1 (01:12:28):
Okay, there you go, Jamal says, go get Sling TV.
Jamal have a great week, man, thanks for the phone call.
Speaker 6 (01:12:34):
You man.
Speaker 1 (01:12:36):
There you go. That's Jamal hanging out with us. He's
a loyal listener and phone caller. And and he'll call
the guest line eight oh three four five zero zero
eighty six. I guess that's the guest line in the
main line. He'll call that number and that gets him
through to us. And he called us and got through
the day while we were putting the show in. But
(01:12:58):
back to Dabo Sweeney. You was ask about something I
actually mentioned earlier about the fans at the game and
what that environment was like on Saturday night, even given
the way the season has played out in comparison maybe
even to the expectations, and how let down Tiger fans
must feel. But yet there they were supporting in a
big way and what that could mean for this team.
Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
I mean, that's Clemson and that's who they are. And
it was awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:13:23):
I mean just you could you could you know, you
could see it, you could feel it on the bus
coming around. You could just feel the juice from the crowd.
And yeah, it hasn't been the season that we that
we wanted or worked for or expected. I mean, that's Clemson.
They show up, always have. I mean, this ain't the
first disappointing season around here. It'spent the first one in
(01:13:45):
a long time for us. It's been, like I said,
many times, since twenty ten, since we've had a year
like this. But I mean they showed up then and
fifteen years later they're still showing up. But that's that's
just who Clemson is. I mean, they love their Tigers,
always have. There's been some lean years around here, especially
(01:14:06):
back in the nineties, but I wouldn't hear them, but
I'm sure they were showing up because that's Clemson.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
That's just who they are.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
Uh. They they support the Tigers and means a lot
to the players, you know, to be able to have
a venue like we have to play in. That was
a great night in the valley.
Speaker 3 (01:14:23):
Got one more.
Speaker 1 (01:14:25):
Sweeny was also asked about Clay's two point conversion and
whether or not he include his wife Kathleen in on it.
Speaker 3 (01:14:31):
She had no idea.
Speaker 4 (01:14:32):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:14:33):
She was mad.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
Uh She's like, how come I didn't know he was?
I said, well, I mean she's on a need to
know basis. Uh No, she had no idea, but we
we we put it in. We put it in Tuesday
and and we said, hey, first touchdown, we're gonna, we're gonna,
we're gonna run this and get to we we really
it really should have been just an absolute walk, but
Cuddy kind of came off. The double team got with
(01:14:56):
one guy came outside, so Cuddy takes in the linebacker
state inside, comes off, and so we got to work
on our double team technique a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:15:03):
But should have just been a walk. But a good job.
Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
We got it in there and just buy enough and
and it was a good, good, good momental play. It
was just something that we had on tape and we're like,
well this, why not go why not?
Speaker 3 (01:15:13):
Why not go up two scores?
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
You know, because I mean that's effectively that's what it is,
you know, because you got a score and now you've
got to go get in Ah, you got to go
run another play for a two point.
Speaker 3 (01:15:22):
So it was a good, good momentum play for us,
kind of set the tone.
Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
And then later on being up fifteen to nothing, now
it's the three scores and so just uh well executed
especially by Walker Parks and and Dietrich Pennington.
Speaker 3 (01:15:37):
They did a great job and a good good play.
Speaker 1 (01:15:41):
Final pay for Dabo Swingey Today he was asked about
Gideon Davidson and his expanded role. What he's seen from
him so far.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
Confidence, confidence, just confidence, and and just really game is
slowing down for him. He's doing a good job with
his protections. He's he's confident in the passing game. They
had a nice job on screen, just as timing of it,
you know, just the little nuances that come with being
a complete player and really being able to understand the
totality of what we're asking him to do at that position.
(01:16:12):
Footwork and you know, ball handling, understanding the schemes. He's
got really natural vision. He's a powerful kid, you know,
he's he can get load of the ground. I mean
he may have one he had one run that you know,
it looked like we were going to get four and
he got about eight because he just he's got really
good you know, balance and and really explosive lower body power.
Speaker 1 (01:16:35):
All right, So there you go. That's Dabo Sweeney, not
all of his stuff, for sure. We'll have several articles
up on our website for you from that conversation with Dabo,
and and then of course we will also have the
full video on our website. As well. Again that's Clemson
Sports dou dot com. And you know, if you like
this show and you want to support us directly, you
(01:16:57):
can subscribe to our website. It's sixty three dollars and
seventeen cents for one year. That's right, I said, a
game cognation sixty three seventeen so.
Speaker 7 (01:17:07):
You could continue to peek over the fence at the
best radio showing the naked.
Speaker 1 (01:17:12):
The late great Cleveland Man there. Man, I miss that guy, Klly.
What a great caller, What a great caller. But yeah,
if you want to support this Cleveland Man, love the show.
If you love the show, go to our website and
subscribe sixty three dollars and seventeen cents for one year.
Hit a quick break. We'll come back with the final
segment right after this.
Speaker 7 (01:17:34):
What have you done for me lately? It's a fair question.
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Lucky for us at Clemson, the answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately? And what have
you done? Always are the same. We win.
Speaker 1 (01:18:47):
Final segment on a Tuesday, and I didn't even get
a chance to mention this earlier, but I want to
mention it now because a couple of items here. First,
you've got Clemson basketball tonight at home against Morehead State.
(01:19:10):
That game is gonna be on the ACC Network Extra,
but then on the ESPN two at six o'clock just
when we get off the air, the number two ranks
South Carolina Game Cocks the women's team hosting Clemson's women
and Sean Poppy. Now, I would imagine that South Carolina's
(01:19:33):
gonna win big tonight, you know, not by forty, but
I would think they're gonna win by fifteen to twenty.
That would be my guess. If Clemson keeps it closer
than that, I would call that a win. But remember,
Clemson has the number one rated recruiting class in the
(01:19:55):
country in women's basketball next season. So just showing up
here and making a stand a little bit for Clemson
against South Carolina would be huge. A part of the
Palmetto Series presented by the South Carolina Education Lottery, I'll
(01:20:20):
be watching. This series has been really good over the years.
South Carolina, however, has really taken a turn in the
in the series. I'll give you the example. The game
Cocks lead the series thirty seven thirty two all time,
(01:20:40):
but the game Cocks have a fourteen game winning streak
dating back to twenty ten to twenty eleven, So the
game Cocks have won fourteen consecutive meaning Clemson led this
series what thirty two to twenty three. At one point,
the Tigers were up by nine, now they're down by five.
(01:21:02):
Last year, in Sean Poppy's first season as the head coach,
Clemson got beat seventy seven forty five by South Carolina. Again,
it's an early season game for both of these teams,
but it will be a game on national television as
well as national as ESPN two can be right now
without what ten million subscribers on YouTube TV having access
(01:21:26):
to it. And like I told you, I'm leaving YouTube
TV as soon as the NFL season is done. So Dad,
if you're listening, we're leaving YouTube TV. Unless they get
this thing straighten out. You're gonna have to learn how
to use Hulu or something else, cause we're not gonna
(01:21:46):
have YouTube TV anymore, Pops. So yeah, we'll see what
they're on the clock. How many more weeks? How many
more weeks? When does the NFL regular season end not start? Good? Gracious?
When does it end January fourth, did you I had
(01:22:14):
no idea the NFL regular season went into January. Get
out of town January the fourth. I think they'll have
this thing solved by January the fourth. I first off,
like I said the other day, the fact that these
two billion dollar companies are battling. Let's see, So what
(01:22:37):
is Google worth? Google apparently is worth approximately three point
five trillion dollars? What is Disney worth? Disney is worth
two hundred and five billion dollars? What are we doing?
(01:22:58):
What are we doing? Is Google really worth three point
five trillion? I mean, come on, guys, get this thing
worked out? Like what do you guys arguing about? You're
arguing about? Like this is like me and my wife
arguing about what you know, wherein we're gonna put the
(01:23:20):
tampaware in the kitchen? How are we gonna sort?
Speaker 3 (01:23:25):
You know?
Speaker 1 (01:23:25):
This is actually no, this is closer to my wife
telling me how I'm supposed to load the dishwasher because
I don't do it right. I'm not once in our
nearly twenty years of marriage, you can ask her have
I ever loaded the dishwasher correctly? I've loaded it. I've
seen her reload it like fix it like it's in there.
(01:23:50):
Just wash it, just wash it. No, no, no, she's
gotta That's what I feel like we're doing here with
Google and Disney. Come on, guys, what are you arguing
about my fifteen dollars my you know, my money. I
really I think this is the holdout though by Disney
(01:24:11):
to try to push everybody to Hulu and Hulu Live TV,
which is exactly what I'm gonna do. If they don't
get this thing solved, That's exactly what I will do. Well, well, then, Jamal,
say go to Sling. I was with Sling years ago, Jamal,
before YouTube TV existed. Maybe that's where I'm going back
(01:24:33):
to Sling. Who knows, we'll find out. We'll see. They
got till January fourth. We'll be back tomorrow though. However,
until then, as always, y'all take care of now and
go Tigers
