Hell everybody Low and Swan back in the saddle once again.
It is the show that shakes the south Land. Clemson
Sports off for you each and every afternoon as you
make away around the great state of South Carolina and beyond,
(01:03):
listening to us on incredible radio stations like Fox Sports
Radio fourteen under the Midlands, heard around the world on
the iHeartRadio application. Download us today is free. The website
put the dot com on a dog on it. That's
Clemson Sports Doll dot com Ato three four five zero
zero eighty six. And of course the show The Shakespeare
(01:24):
South lamb brought the apartment. Our good friends over at
mets Plumbing seven three to two drip Drip, Drip drip,
you know the jingle seven three to two drip. That's
Mets Plumbing, mets Plumbing dot com.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
That's their website. All right, So.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Mike, you've a Gamecock Central dot Com joins us an
hour number two. We'll talk with him, see how his
fourth at July Weekend was, and a lot more, maybe
even dive into his history with THEA Sports College Football is.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
That game debuted.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Yesterday, the new release out official out on the tenth.
Early adopters got in on the seventh. Rosters apparently not
finalized yet. Most schools, a lot of schools do have
the majority of their rosters in the game, and we've
talked about some of the best players at Clemson, but
(02:24):
until yesterday, you really didn't have the majority of the players.
And so there are some interesting numbers that came out.
And the good thing with these games today versus the
olden days is they can go in and adjust it
and again. And some of you don't play video games,
but I'm going to give you just a couple of
(02:46):
little nuances and numbers here that might peak your interest.
All right, First off, we told you ka cleb think
is a ninety two and the Clemson quarterback room is
considered to be a pretty good one in the world
of real life college football, with Christopher Zena as what
(03:07):
should be a capable backup for k Klubnick the Zena
on the video game. While Clubnick is a ninety two,
Vazena is a seventy eight. To put that into perspective,
Chris Dinson and I think Zena is underrated in the game.
This is why I bring it up. Chris Dnson, the
freshman is a seventy six, just two spots behind Zena.
(03:30):
I think Vezena is a lot better than a quarterback
in real life than Chris Dinson. And maybe maybe saying
that is not fear to Chris Dinson not knowing as
much about him, But my hunt would be Zena should
be in the eighties, eighty two, eighty three, wherever you
want to put him, all right, This also piqued my interest.
(03:53):
So everybody has been very focused in the real world
community on Gideon Davidson and the belief that Gideon Davidson
could be the best running back at Clemson this season
as a true freshman. Now, the best running back, according
(04:15):
to a sports is Jay Haynes, who is injured, banged up,
trying to return and should have plenty of time to
return and get back out there before the season. You know,
a knee injury in the old days would take you
out for more than a year. Now six seven months,
you ought to be you ought to be pretty shipshape
by the time the college football campaign comes around. It's
(04:35):
really about the six inches between your years. Jay Haynes
is listed as an eighty five, but Keith Adams Junior,
Gideon Davidson, and Adam Randall all three check in at
eighty Three's meaning the folks over DA Sports don't value
Gideon Davidson as highly as a lot of you and
(04:59):
a lot of people in the real world, real world
value Gideon Davidson. To my surprise, David isy A Moomey
is the lowest behind Jarvis Green isy A Moomey at
a seventy six, So a very balanced room on the
video game, but surprising numbers there Adam Randall and certainly
(05:27):
is he a Moumey being at a seventy six. Now
the wide receiver room loaded ninety Antonio Williams eighty eight,
Bryant Westcot eighty six, TJ Moore eighty five, Tyler Brown
eighty one, Tristan Smith to transfer. Cole Turner checks in
as a seventy seven. I know Dabosweeney loves to talk
about some Cole Turner. The thing that I noticed there
(05:50):
is Tyler Brown, and I feel like we've done a
good job this entire offseason reminding everybody that even with
the buzz or round. Williams of west co and Moore.
Tyler Brown returning and healthy is a huge addition to
that wide out room, and his rating proves it virtually,
(06:14):
and I think his play will prove it in the
real world. Additionally, I am a little bit surprised at TJ.
Morris behind Briant Westcote.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
I think TJ.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Moore is probably the second best wide receiver on Clemson's
campus behind Antonio Williams. But we'll see how that all develops.
At tight end, Christian Bettencore and Olsen pat Henry bo
check in at seventy six. Now, we won't worry too
much about the offensive line except for to say this,
(06:44):
Blake Miller is a ninety two at right tackle and
Tristan Lee is an eighty three at left tackle, So
the tackles the guys up front looking pretty good from
the numbers standpoint. Now flip to the defensive side of
the ball, where Clemson does have the best defensive end
and best defensive tackle in the game. But just to
(07:05):
give you some discrepancy, TJ. Parkers a ninety five. Behind
him at left end is Caddnoff at a seventy nine,
So big drop off there virtually, probably in the real
world at the right side will help chicks in as
an eighty three, backed up by a seventy seven Jahem Lawson.
But then Ari Watford freshman is seventy five looking pretty
(07:27):
good for Watford. There behind Peter Woods at defensive tackle.
I mean, I guess they list them all as one.
You've got the other defensive tackle beat demonte K Park who's.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
An eighty four.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Then you've got Vic Burley in eighty two and Amari Adams,
a freshman fellow the eighty two. They like Adams better
than Stefiland Green. At linebacker, the top rated players are
Sammy Brown in in eighty seven. Am Wave would ass
Kobe McLeod actually behind Sammy Brown chicks in and that's
the third best linebacker in the game. And then you
(08:03):
got Jeremiah Alexander the transfer from Alabama and Jamal Anderson,
both checking in as a seventy eight prospects Abyon Terrell's
a ninety two defensively for Clemson at corner, Ashton Hampton
checks in at an eighty four, jayde and Lucas at
in eighty two, and Shelton Lewis at a seventy six
(08:23):
at free safety. Khalil Barnes is an eighty four. Tyler
Vinnables and Ricardo Jones check in behind Khalil at seventy eight.
Strong safety Kylon Griffin is a eighty one. Kylin Webb
checks in behind him at a seventy five, and then
on special teams Nolan who's your Clemson's kicker checks in
at a seventy seven overall, and Clyps's punter topic of
(08:50):
concern for everybody, Jack Smith checks in at a sixty four,
which I believe is the lowest rating of any Clemson
player in the too deep So you just kind of
hope you don't punt all that much this year. But yeah,
I had a chance to watch my son play EA
(09:13):
Sports College Football yesterday just a little bit. One of
the things they added, I can't remember if we talked
about this on the show or not, but one of
the things that they added to the game was where
the recruit can fake where he's going. Like you got
three hats on the table, you could pick one up,
(09:33):
you could even go as far as throwing one away
and then just leaving two hats on the table. So
they really got to add it to that aspect of
the game as well. We'll talk with Mike Eve more
about the video game, but those are just a few
of the things that I noticed. More noticeably the drop
off from Clubnic to Vizena, which I think is much
larger in the game than it is in real life,
even though I think Kay Clumnick is clearly the barrier
(09:55):
of those two quarterbacks. And then that running back room
where Jay Haynes is in eighty five, Adams Junior is
in eighty three, Gideon Davidson in eighty three, and Adam
Randall at an eighty three. That was kind of shocking
to me. So we'll see how it all plays out
(10:15):
in the real world, but we are getting closer, and
again next week SEC media Days, the week following the
week following that, we've got the ACC kickoff up in Charlotte,
and then practices will begin and we'll be getting geared
up for the kickoff of Clemson and LSU to open
(10:37):
the season in Tigertown. And so that same weekend there
is another big ball game obviously, as Texas and Ohio
State will open up the college football season with College
Game Day.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Now we have not.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Gone through all of the over unders obviously that I
would like, but I do want to get to a
few here today, some that tie to the program, like
our conversations about the situation at Oklahoma State and how
poor they were a year ago, much like Florida State.
(11:19):
Quite frankly, with Mike Norvell, I think that Mike Gundy,
after twenty seasons, has put himself in a position where
you got to win some ball games, and you gotta
win some ball games in a hurry, because as beloved
(11:44):
as you might be after twenty years, fans will not
be pacified by another lackluster season, regardless of what you've
looked like your entire career. And I talked about this
last week. Here's what I said before we kind of
(12:04):
got into our conversations about Arizona State. The team I
probably should look at today, maybe more than any any day,
is Oklahoma State. We'll try to get to them before
it's all said and done, because, quite frankly, given the
way the wheels fell off for the Cowboys last season,
(12:24):
which was an absolute debacle, Oklahoma State, if you forgot
about this, or if you put it in the rearview mirror,
they were a three win team in twenty twenty four.
They won their first three games of the season, beating
(12:45):
South Dakota State, Arkansas, and Tulsa before dropping nine consecutive
ballgames straight.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
And yeah, when you.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Think about the Big Twelve minus Oklahoma in Texas a
year ago, the thought was that, sure, Utah and some
other teams are now in that league, but Oklahoma State,
I mean, I truly believe, in the mind's eye of
(13:26):
many was supposed to be the team that sort of
stepped in and filled that gap. Instead, Oklahoma State, under
Mike Gundy, who's been the head coach there for twenty seasons,
has their worst record, the worst record they've ever had
(13:49):
under his leadership, three and nine oho to nine in
the conference. The last time Oklahoma State was that bad
was in two thousand and five when he took over
and they went four and seven and one in seven
in the Big Twelve. And so with all of that data,
(14:12):
let's look at Oklahoma State, Let's look at Mike Gundy
and whether or not we think he can have the
type season that would keep him from possibly being fired.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
For me, I'm a man, I'm forty, I'm not a kid.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
But I have to admit I was disappointed with the
coaches hot seat that you can't get past twenty. I
thought I could scroll to another page, but they've changed
this website. I think somebody bought it, and you can't
see the full list, and I don't see that there
is a way to.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Change that.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
There's no subscribe feature in anything like that. But anyway,
let's take a look at Oklahoma State and see what
their season might look like.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
Now.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
The quarterback situation there is yet to be determined, but
both guys are young. I think they got a Richert
freshman house Henny and a Richert sophomore's Aye Floores that
we'll be battling for. And if I had to guess,
(15:27):
my one hundred would be that these guys end up
playing and splitting some time. So I would first check
that box as struggling young players quarterback. You know, we
talk about the best quarterbacks in the country and the
(15:50):
expected results for most of those teams. One of the
key aspects of it is that they've got more mature
or seasoned veterans at quarterback. Now, the positive for Oklahoma State,
and some might say the negative as well. They're projected
(16:14):
over under is eight and a half wins, which again
would make you say if they have a bad season,
my gun's probably in a lot of trouble. So they
open the year against U. T.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Martin.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
That's a home game at boone Pickens Stadium.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
That's a win.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
They then go to the Oregon Ducks, and I like Oregon.
I think Oregon will cruise in that game. They drop
to one and one. They have a bye week, Then
they host Tulsa. That should be a win to go
to two and one. They face Baylor. This game's at
(16:56):
home at Oklahoma State. I don't think that this is
necessarily a surefire win. I think it's absolutely a toss
up at this point. I'll lean ind that they lose
to Baylor to go to two and two. I think
they lose at Arizona to go to two and three.
They get Houston at home. I think they should beat
(17:19):
Houston to move to.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Three and three.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
They should beat Cincinnati to move to four and three.
At Texas Tech, I think the Red Raiders win that
that drops them to four and four. I think the
Kansas game could easily be kind of a toss up,
but I'll give them the benefit of the doubts. Since
I did not give them the benefit of the dab
against Baylor puts them at five and four. I think
they lose to Kansas State. I think they're five and five.
(17:45):
I think they win at UCF six and five. I
think they lose at Iowa State. I think Oklahoma State's
probably six and six this season, which is under the number,
but I think it probably still saves Mike Gundy's job.
I think under five hundred he's probably fired.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
You know.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Is there some leeway in there for them to go
seven to five. Absolutely they could win that game against Baylor,
But again, I just I don't have a lot of
confidence in those young quarterbacks. Not to mention, let's say
you go to Outsend Stadium and get hammered by Oregon
(18:33):
and those guys. You know, those those young quarterbacks make
some mistakes that it takes a couple of weeks to
shake those cobwebs. Yeah, I don't see they got him
an eight and a half. I know, I don't see
nine wins on that schedule unless I'm missing something. And
(18:57):
you guys know, I've been pretty pretty heavy on the
over But doing some research, I also see some people
that think they'll go five and seven. So I think
I'm right in the mix. At six and six for
Oklahoma State. I think five and seven he's probably fired
at five and seven, six and six, I think fans
might give him another year, but they will have to
(19:19):
make tremendous strides that following season in my opinion. All right,
we're gonna stick with the O's today. When we come back,
how about we go to Oxford, Mississippi. We have not
talked about ole Miss. What do I think the Rebels
will look like this season as they they head into
(19:40):
another year with a coach that has ruffled people's feathers
the wrong way for many years?
Speaker 4 (19:46):
But I kind of.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
Like following him in Lane Kiffin. All right, we'll come back.
I'll tell you how I think Ole Miss does this
coming season when we return, rocking and en rolling the
show that Shakespeare South Lank Clemson sportstal don't forget about
our friends At a lot hall on the corner of
Campus on College Avenue in downtown Clemson. It's Alumni Hall
for all your officially licensed Clemson merchandise, hats, T shirts,
(20:09):
tailgate gear, and more. Go check them out today. It's
Alumni Hall or online at alumni hall dot com. Hey,
don't forget Clympson students, faculty in military all receive ten
percent off when shopping in store at Alumni Hall. It's
Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop, all right, So I
(20:29):
mentioned earlier Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss and a lot
of people have not liked Lane Kiffin since he left Tennessee,
and I do have to say that I think age
and experience has made Lane kiffen more.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
Palpable.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Is that?
Speaker 4 (20:57):
Is that the red word where you could kind of
stand him?
Speaker 3 (21:02):
I kind of like him now. Actually, I think the
rebirth that he had when he left Alabama. I mean,
his time in Alabama certainly helped catapult him. But then
he went to Florida Atlantic, he took a big step back.
I mean, this is a guy that was the head
coach of the Oakland Raiders in two thousand and seven,
you know, nearly twenty years ago, when he's like thirty
(21:23):
two years old or something. I mean, he leaves Oakland.
He leaves Oakland, he goes to Tennessee for a year
two thousand and nine, turned a lot of people against
him when he left Knoxville to go to Southern cal
and then had to rebuild himself after he struggled at
Southern cal and now an Old Miss for five seasons,
(21:47):
a little more mature, a little wiser, certainly more stable
in the results. I mean, he's got what three I
think top eleven finishes in five years that he's been there,
and over the past two seasons they're twenty one and five.
(22:08):
Over the past two seasons, they're eleven and five in
the SEC. And he's forty four and eighteen during his
time at Old Miss, and quite frankly, has the folks
in the grove excited about the college football season for
more than just spending time in the grove. If you
smell what I'm shoveling, All right, so Old Miss again,
(22:30):
anytime you dive into the SEC, you're gonna find some
difficult a difficult schedule. They're over under number though, is
nine and a half depending on where you look. I
think nine and a half came from Vegas Insider.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
But.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
That would mean that Ole Miss has to win ten
games this season to cross that over under all right, Now,
what I like about Lane Kiffin is I think he
is a great game day tactician. I think that one
(23:11):
of the things that he does really well is his
ability to influence the game by taking advantage of his quarterback,
creating angles and creating opportunities that a lot of coaches
(23:32):
aren't quite as adept at doing.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
Now.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
Austin Simmons I believe is expected to be the starting quarterback.
He's six foot four, two hundred and fifteen pounds, dual
sport athlete. I mean he kind of fits the mold
of the quarterback that Lane Kiffin has when Lane Kiffin's
(23:57):
offenses are excelling. Now they open the season with Georgia State,
and if there's a concern about Ole Miss, to me,
it's the defensive side of the ball. But offensively they
should outrun a lot of teams that they face. They
open the year with Georgia State, absolutely check the box
for a dub there. They go to Kentucky, while the
(24:21):
Wildcats are always tricky. I think that's a win for
Old Miss Arkansas. They get them in Oxford. I think
they'll beat the Razorbacks and move to three and oh
they face two lane four and oh they host LSU.
I don't think they've got enough to beat LSU. I
(24:43):
haven't predicted LSU's schedule yet, kind of saving them for
that same day that I do Clemson because those two
teams open with one another, But I think LSU probably
is good enough to go into Hemingway Stadium in Oxford
and come out with a victory that drops them the
form one. I think they'll beat Washington State to move
to five and one. I don't think they can beat Georgia.
(25:05):
I mean, I think they can beat Georgia, but I
think going to Sanford Stadium, I think that drops Ole
Miss to five and two. You know that Oklahoma game.
When I talked about it a couple of days ago,
I had Oklahoma at seven and five. Don't really feel
great about the Sooners winning this ballgame. Now again, it's
(25:26):
in October, mid October. We'll know a lot more about
both of those teams at that point, will know a
lot more about both quarterbacks at that point. And you know,
if John Mattier, as I have said over and over
and over with Oklahoma, if but Teer is as good
as he was last year at Washington State, then I
(25:48):
would have to think that Oklahoma's got a much better
opportunity to win that game. But I'm I'm gonna lean
in on the fact that I think that Ole Miss
is just a better team then the Sooners this season,
and I'll pick I'll pick Old Miss to go to
six and two. At that point they host South Carolina.
(26:10):
I think it'll be tricky, but I do think Old
Miss is gonna win that game at home. That puts
them at seven to two. They played they faced the
Citadel the next week. I think that's eight and two
versus Florida. I think the Gators have a legit chance here,
but it's another home game, kind of a coin toss,
(26:32):
could go one way or the other. So I'll go
nine and two, and then I certainly think they beat
Mississippi State. That puts them at ten and two. And
I think they've got one, two, maybe three games at
the back end of that season with Oklahoma, South Carolina,
and Florida that could all flip the other direction, and
(26:54):
that's gonna hinge on it. I would say they are
ten and two team. I would probably yield that they'll
lose one of those three games Oklahoma, South Carolina in Florida,
which would put them at nine and three, which would
be under. I mean, I like them to get to
ten and two, but I think the safe spot is
(27:17):
nine and three, which would be the under of a
nine and a half quick break. We'll come back and
take a look at Ohio State. Right after this, Lawton, Swan,
Clemsones Sports Stought, Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred every day,
four until six o'clock right here with you. So coming
up hour number two, Mike, you've a Gamecockcentral dot Com.
(27:38):
We've been looking at some over under totals. I didn't
do it yesterday, kind of got thrown off my game
with the break extended holiday, but want to get in
to some of these and obviously saving kind of Clemson
and in South Carolina and LSU four later we began
this series, though a little over a week ago. I
(28:02):
guess back in late June looking at Florida State, SMU
and Michigan. But the Ohio State Buckeyes, the reigning defending
national champions, are a team that could very well be
a force to be reckoned with once again this season.
(28:23):
Now the over undertotals according to Vegas Insider for Ohio
State ten and a half now, unlike Clemson and South
Carolina and LSU.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
One of the.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
Issues that Ohio State has that a lot of schools,
top schools, Texas, etc. Have or expected top schools is
the fact that you don't know who you're starting quarterbacks
going to be, and when you have a guy like
Will Howard, who was not necessarily a seasoned veteran for
(29:02):
the buck Eyes, but a season veteran in the world
of college football, As Forrest Gump would say, when you're
going to a new guy, you had to have a
know what you're going to get At Julian's saying, I
think for most people the likely starting quarterback, but again
still trying to figure out that situation from starting to finish,
(29:26):
I would say for the buck Eyes this year. But
with that in mind, let's do take a look at
the Ohio State schedule. Now we know they open the
twenty twenty five season hosting the Texas Longhorns August thirtieth.
That's a noon kickoff. That'll be Fox's big noon kickoff
(29:49):
at home Ohio Stadium. Two teams expected to be at
the top. I mean, it is the It is the
picture of a toss up game first and foremost, because
we don't know how the quarterbacks at Ohio State are
gonna play. And you also have to throw into the
(30:10):
mix that you can't be one hundred percent certain about
how arch Manning is going to look for Texas, which
we've documented here throughout the offseason home game. I think
Ohio State wins this, but let me tell you, if
you told me at the end of this game they're
zero to one, I mean that's easily a possibility. I
(30:32):
think the point spread on that game may have come
out yesterday.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
Let's see Week one.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Rematch of last season's Collegeotball Playoffs semi final. The Buckeyes
are two and a half point favorites at home, So
there you go. Less than a field goal. That is,
that is about as toss up as it gets. So
in this scenario, we'll go with Ohio State winning at
(31:07):
home to start the season one to oh and when
we come back through on the back end, that could
potentially be our you know, one of those games. It's
a kind of a swing game. And again ten and
a half is the over under. So can they get
to eleven wins with the schedule that Ohio State has forthcoming?
(31:30):
With a win against Texas, it gets a lot easier.
Grambling State's a win, Ohio's a win. They'll go to
Washington to face the Huskies. Ohio State should win that.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
On the road.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
They host Minnesota certainly should win that game to move
to five and zero. At Illinois, I think Ohio State's
gonna win that game. The Aliani are probably a top
fifteen team, but still I would give them a win
that takes some what six and oh. At Wisconsin, I
(32:04):
would think they'd moved to seven and oh. They host
Penn State. Penn State is potentially considered the top team
in the country, certainly one of the top five teams,
much like Texas. That's another toss up game. So I'll
tell you what I'll do based off of Texas and
Penn State. I'll say they lose one of those two games.
(32:27):
I think that would take them what to seven and
one at that point Imus he won two, three, four, five, six,
seven and one. At Purdue, they should win eight to one,
us LA nine and one, Rutgers ten and one. At
Michigan in ann Arbor, I think they win that. It's
eleven and one. That Texas Penn State game. Those two matchups,
(32:55):
that's what you're hinging on here. They can win one
of those. They're eleven to win team in they're over
that gives them no margin of era anywhere else. Kind
of an unproven quarterback, I would probably I think off
(33:17):
of a ten win regular season, there should be ten
and a halfy in the over under. Given their schedule,
I certainly feel eleven to one as possible. Twelve to Ozho,
for that matter, is very possible, but with the unknowns
going into the season, and again this is not gambling advice,
I am not a gambling man, but looking at a
(33:37):
ten and a half number for the over under, I
kind of feel like I would need to take the
under at ten and two because I can't for certain
say that they win at Illinois. I can't for certain
say they went at Michigan, and I certainly can't one
hundred percent pick wins against Texas and Penn State, which
(33:59):
would put me at a ten to two may be worse.
So I'll take the under in my estimation on the
Ohio State's record, I think ten and two's probably giving
you a little leeway, and eleven to one is certainly
a pretty decent possibility. It all might come down to, though,
here's the other thing. Right for this whole schedule, Let's
(34:22):
say Texas goes in there and just beats the breaks
off of Ohio State opens the season with like a
thirty five thirteen wins something like that all of a sudden, Man,
I'm looking at these these other games Illinois and ben
State and Michigan with a completely different lens for sure,
But that's where I would lean in. I would say
(34:43):
ten and two's the likely record in the regular season
for Ohio State, eleven and one a possibility, and I
would say they fall under a ten and a half number.
All right, quick break, we'll put a bow on hour
number one of the show that Chasy south Land. Right
after this final segment of hour one, coming up, Mike
You of a game Cockcentral dot Com joins us part
(35:03):
of the A three network, looking forward to catching up
with him after the holiday.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
Break.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
So we talked about Ohio State, Oklahoma State, and Old
Miss here today and hour number one over under totals. Well,
Miss was at nine and a half. I think they
go nine and three, Oklahoma State was eight and five.
I think they go six and six. By the way,
little note on Old Miss, I mean they could certainly
go eight and four as well, and then Ohio State
(35:32):
at ten and a half. I think ten and two's
probably a safe number to look at there, but they
are capable of going undefeated or even eleven to one.
Giving the skill position players that they have, it'll all
shake out, I think, based off of their quarterback. And
that's kind of the story of the world of college football,
(35:56):
especially this year. You know, the story of the quarterbacks,
and the top quarterbacks right now in the offseason tend
to be the ones who have some experience and Kate
Clubnick was rated as the top quarterback in the country
(36:19):
by USA Today as Paul Meyerberg, Eric Smith, Blake Topa Meyer,
Adie Taminus, and Jordan Mendoza put together a list of
the top quarterbacks in the country and they rank Clemson's
quarterback Cake Clubnick as the top play caller in the country,
(36:44):
saying quote in his second season at the controls, club
Nick's progress from his first year restored the explosiveness to
the Clemson offense that had been missing since the Tigers
were playing for the national championship. Or we're playing four
national championships now with even more repid weapons at his disposal,
he should be front and center in the Heisman discussion
(37:05):
as the Tigers make another title push. Club Nick at
the top of the list.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
Well, look at what we have here.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Second on that list, according to USA Today, Drew Aller,
quarterback at Penn State. Another guy that we've we felt
really good about. To give you an example when you
have a quarterback. And again some of this is scheduled,
but I think Penn State's capable of going eleven to
one this season, and a big part of that's Drew
(37:41):
Aller and my confidence in him as a quarterback and
the experience that he's got. They say Aler is the
face of Penn State's push for his first national title
in nearly forty years after ending his junior year with
a devastating interception in the team's playoff semi final against
Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, Aler enters his second
(38:03):
season running offensive coordinator Andy katle Nicky's scheme, surrounded by
a top notch offensive line in one of the nation's
top collection of skill talent, especially in the backfield. They
rank Arch Manning third. Manning at Texas. They say, finally,
it's Manning's chance to prove the hype that followed this
(38:25):
blue chip quarterback with one of football's most famous surnames.
He's the preseason Heisman favorite. Manning looked a part of
a budding star with a lofty ceiling in two spots,
starts and backup opportunities last season. He should be ready
to break out in this third season playing for Steve Sarkeesian.
A deft quarterback developer. Manning's army sharp his mobility in
(38:46):
size or pluses, although he must improve his processing time.
They ranked Garrett Nussmeyer fourth, who comes in to Clemson
to open the season. And this is the last one
I'll read to you, he said's nuss Meyer is equipped
with a strong arm and the belief that he could
make any throw. Watch him zip a pass to the
sideline and you'll understand why he's projected as an early
(39:07):
first round NFL draft pick. He's the nation's only returning
quarterback who passed from more than four thousand yards last season,
and he'll be surrounded by a good group of receivers.
Reducing his twelve interceptions for twenty twenty four becomes the
next stage in his development. They ranked Sam Levitt number five,
John Mattier at Oklahoma, who's the name we've talked about
(39:29):
keeping our eye on a lot at six, Dj Lagway
for the Florida Gators at seven, Leonori Sellers at South
Carolina at eight, number nine. They have got Carson Beck,
number ten, Kevin Jennings, and this list carries out for
twenty five players, so they give you a top twenty
(39:49):
five now for our fine feathered friends hanging out with us,
so you.
Speaker 5 (39:52):
Could continue to peek over the fence at the best
radio showing the naked.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Since Leonora Stellars did crack into the top ten, I
will read you what they say about him. Seller showed
he could do it all as a rensher of freshman.
He passed for three hundred and fifty three yards and
five touchdowns in a November win against Missouri. Two weeks later,
he rushed for one hundred and sixty six yards and
two touchdowns in a takedown of Clemson. That's the epitome
(40:17):
of a dual threat. He's accurate and efficient, and he
can reach speeds of nearly twenty one miles an hour
on the ground. He reduces his turnovers fumbles were a bugaboo.
He'll be the complete package. So there you go, two
of the top ten quarterbacks playing right here in the
state of South Carolina.
Speaker 5 (40:34):
Again.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
I'll go back to arch Manning for a second. This
is something that I think is going to continue to
be a story about arch Manning. And I'm not saying
that arch Manning is not going to be a good quarterback,
but it is hard to imagine that he is perceived
as well as he is, even though obviously I believe
(40:55):
in development, I believe players get better. But yet he didn't.
But he wasn't the starting quarterback in front of Quinn Yours.
Uh you know, does that make sense? So I would
say that's just part of the at least my thought
process surrounding like people that project him to be the
(41:17):
Heisman Trophy winner if he was that, if he was
that good, wouldn't he have been the starter last year
at Texas regardless of Quinn Yours a talent? Shouldn't he
have been the better of the two? I'm just just
throwing that out there anyway, Coming up, Mike Eva. Don't
(41:38):
forget he is on Twitter apt Mike underscore UVA. Mike
joins the program. We'll talk with him about his Fourth
of July holiday, maybe dive into a little Joey chestnut.
Who knows where we had with Mike Eva. As he
joins us on a Tuesday afternoon, it's gonna be a
(41:59):
hot one ninety eight degrees. Whooie, in the Midlands. All right,
we'll be right back with more of the Show That
Shakes the south Land.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
Right after this, it's time for Clipson Sports Talk with
Lowton Swan.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Just call me Swanny.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
It is our number two. That's drive time right here
on the Show that Shakes the south Land. Clemson Sports
tal Lord Swan with you on a Tuesday afternoon. You know, Mike,
you've Gamecoccentral dot Com joins us. He'll be on the
line momentarily in the show The Shakespeare South Lambrotea in
part by our good friends over at Mets Plumbing. Seventh
(43:12):
three two drip, drip, drip drip. You know the jingle,
seventh three to two drip. That's Mets Plumbing. Mets plumber
dot com.
Speaker 4 (43:22):
Is the website.
Speaker 3 (43:23):
All right, Mike, you Gamecockcentral dot Com joins us here
on a Tuesday afternoon. Mike, welcome in, my man. How
is your fourth of July?
Speaker 6 (43:35):
Oh? It was even better because Joey Chestnutt, the greatest
athlete in American sports history, was able to get it
done for another time. Swuani, so you know he's tied
with the Lakers for championships. I would be uh, I
would be excited as a Celtic expanse to share that
honor of eighteen titles and be able to get it
done next year. But you know, he celebrated right now
(43:58):
and you get back to training and uh, fourth of
July twenty twenty six. I'm looking forward to it for
Joey Jaw's chestnut.
Speaker 4 (44:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:06):
So the whole Joey chestnut thing is intriguing to me
because I don't think people realize what it takes to
do what he does. And I saw a video sort
of accentuating like the muscles in his neck, the esophagus,
everything that he's trained to do what he does.
Speaker 4 (44:27):
Dude, it is.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
Wild how incredibly powerful. I know they call him Joey
Jaws like you mentioned, but man, his ability to push
food down is insane.
Speaker 6 (44:39):
So if you can stomach it, no pun intended. Two
things that would tell you to watch. One, they did
a sports science video on just the expansion of I
don't know, like seventy high talks and what it looks
like in the stomach and how during competition you can
gain up to, like, you know, fifteen to twenty pounds
(45:01):
depending on what type of food you're eating, which is
insane just to think about number two. There is a
thirty to thirty on this now for the die hard
competitive either, especially when it comes to Nathan Nathan's hotdogs.
You'll remember about, oh, I don't know, eighteen years or
so ago when the rivalry between Joey Chestnut and Kobyashi,
(45:25):
and that's when the hot dog contest was phenomenal because
it was back and forth. But I say all this
because there's a great documentary and that shows all the
training and to make this more local. A couple of
years back, when Clemson beat Alabama for that second time
in the National Championship, I remember a media day, Joey
(45:45):
Chestnut was next to me because we did a segment
out there for Watch Fox. I was next to him
because he was doing a bit going around and I
was there when he was talking to Dabo Sweeney who
was up on his podium and he's introduced himself and
Dabo was like, oh, I know you. You're the guy
that always hops on my TV screen on the fourth
of July Man and Dabbo came on down and shook
(46:07):
his hand. So it's always fascinating to see different people
you would think like, oh, they don't know who this
guy is now. Obviously, what he's been able to do
for such a long period of time, it's hard to
miss it. But I thought that was pretty neat. Dabo
Sweeney came down and shook his hands. It was like,
I don't know, five or.
Speaker 3 (46:26):
Six years ago, Mike, you'va with us here on the program. So, Mike,
there's always this great debate. I want to stick with
Joey Chestnut because you got me thinking about it, and
I didn't really get a chance to celebrate too much
about what he did over the weekend with his return
to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Challenge. But there's always
this great debate, and I don't think it's a debate
(46:47):
about whether or not you know where I'm going. Chestnut
could eat a hot dog and then run one hundred
meters faster than Hussane Bolt could eat a hot dog
and run the same Joe.
Speaker 4 (47:00):
Chestnut would blow him to pieces. And here's why question.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
Even if you didn't allow them to dunk the buns
the way they do at the hot dog eating contest,
I watched Joey Chestnut eat a hot dog in a
regular hot dog standard in less than five seconds, and
people say, yeah, but I think Usain Bolt could maybe
eat a standard hot dog in twenty five seconds. I'm
gonna tell you no, he can't. I guarantee you go
(47:25):
grab a hot dog today. You cannot eat that thing
in twenty seconds. It will take you about a minute
or more.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
So.
Speaker 6 (47:33):
If someone who has had a hot dog with Joey Chestnut,
one of my claims the fame in life, he it's insane.
It is absolutely insane. You bite it now, granted we had.
It's apparently a staple to the San Jose area. It's
called a San Jose street dog. It is a hot
(47:53):
dog wrapped in bacon like a candy cane style. Now, granted,
these dogs were ice cold. I don't know if I've
ever shared this story on your airwaves before, so I
apologize to our listeners.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
You have not, and I am fascinated. Continue, sir, so so.
Speaker 6 (48:08):
Long story short National Championship. A couple of years back
out in Santa Clair, San Jose with the media hospitality room,
meet Joey Chestnut the night before media day. The bartender said,
you got to find the way to eat hot dogs
with him the next day, so he tells me go
down the street, take a left, take a right, you'll
see this little man, and I'll have like a you know,
a street and meat stand. I'm like, oh God, am
(48:30):
I going to get stabbed out here? Because I'm by myself.
I'll get three thirty in the morning now on the
mean streets of San Jose, trying to find whatever the
heck a San Jose street dog is, because at this
time I have no idea what it is. And I
buy two hot dogs. They're ice cold as you can imagine.
By ten thirty eleven am the next day, I'm thinking
to myself, I am be able to get Joey Chestnut
(48:54):
to do a bit with me. I just pray to
God that I don't give him food poisoning, like then
I will be public Enemy number one in America. So
we did this bit together, and at first I thought
he was just gonna take one bite, and then he's like,
you're gonna keep going to I'm trying to, like, you know,
stop my face, and he's gone. He's done, like in
a matter of just second, so one hundred meters. I
(49:17):
don't think you say Bolt would say the chance simply
because of the head start that Joey would have with
eating the hot dog to make it interesting, Swanny one
hot dog each two hundred meters.
Speaker 4 (49:29):
Okay, what do you think they are?
Speaker 3 (49:32):
I think that becomes a much more debatable topic if
I'm being honest with you, especially if you give Bolt,
you know, a couple of months to to prep for it.
But yeah, in the in the the one hundred meter race,
based off of how quick Joey chest That could eat
a hot dog, it's not gonna be close Chestnut, I
don't care if you weigh four hundred pounds.
Speaker 4 (49:52):
He would kill Husain Bolt in that kind of race.
Speaker 6 (49:57):
No, My favorite thing about the hotdog eating come to
Swani is when they get introduced the commissioner of the league.
The Commissioner of the League, he's the commissioner. He does
a phenomenal job because in a sense, kind of like
with the Savannah Bananas, you have to promote in a
way that grabs people's attention, that creates storylines, especially for
(50:21):
the non traditional fan. And granted, I'm not watching food
eating contest year around. I mean that's the only one
that I'll pay attention to. But I love when they
come out there and he's like he's the Oreo eating
champion of the world. He's the baked beet, and they
just go down the list and they're just like, you know,
this guy ate one hundred and twenty five chicken wings
(50:42):
in eight minutes. I'm just like Jesus, like he just
you listen to this stuff and it's just like it's
unbelievable and as much as it could be discussed into
many of us as much as if it's just like,
I can't believe this is actually a thing. These people,
especially the top eaters in the world, because there is
a league mL Major League Eating, they're getting paid to
(51:03):
do these competitions. The best way to describe at SWANEE
is kind of like golf, like they do all these
different competitions and base where you finish. There's cash prize
for for these, for the for the winners.
Speaker 3 (51:15):
I think my favorite partner the whole thing is when
that guy does say something along the lines like this
with Joey Chestnutt.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
Some say he is a god among.
Speaker 6 (51:24):
Us to just get ready if he wins next year
with the Celtics comparisons, unless the Celtics win another championship,
which I don't think that's gonna happen with Tata most
likely uh being out for the majority of the season,
if not all of next year. Just wait, just wait
for the comparison.
Speaker 3 (51:44):
So get ready, Mike, you'va with us here on the program,
all right, Mike. So, yesterday was a big day for
the people that have the early release of EA Sports
College Football, and obviously a return after a decade away
last year has caught the intention of not only guys
my age, you know, they're in their late forties, but
certainly all the way down to the teenagers that are
(52:05):
diving into that game. And South Carolina fans can certainly
be excited about it this year because maybe unlike a
lot of years in recent memory, they're pretty.
Speaker 4 (52:16):
Highly thought of.
Speaker 3 (52:17):
What's kind of the buzz in Columbia amongst the Gamecock
faithful about EA Sports College Football coming out.
Speaker 6 (52:25):
I think they're very excited about some of the details
that were polished up this year. Now, when you think
about it, right, you have over one hundred and thirty teams.
You're never gonna get every little detail right right, You're
gonna try to do it your best. I'm sure there's
certain things that even Clempson fans when they go back
and they watch whether it be something with the entrance
(52:45):
or something in the stadium, they're gonna be able to
point out. Like I give credit to the people at
EA Sports because trying to get every little detail, never
mind the fact of and I'm gonna pretend like I
like I'm talking like I know what I'm talking about here,
but like the different gigabytes and everything in terms of
what you can fit to make things still run smoothly.
(53:06):
Like I'm sure that's the whole process as well, But
I think just the little details, like last year, you
know in the game there were black towels, well we
know the South Carolina fans they tore around their white
towels the entrance certainly, I mean they pretty much to
me they captured everything. And maybe I don't know, Swanny,
(53:29):
and I'm sure you're there with me. I don't want
to speak for you, but tell me if I'm wrong.
I think, as someone who grew up playing this game
for so long, just the fact that we've seen this
and this is only the second year it's been back
since the twenty fourteen series, just seeing the little details
in the game now it's just like holy cow, I mean,
(53:51):
just knowing where the game was many years ago, and
obviously a lot has changed with technology over the last
decade in that gap when you didn't have the game,
But I just think, I'm like, you know what, this
is great. So maybe maybe there's a generation and maybe
this is where I'm starting to feel like the old
man yelling at the cloud. But I'm looking at it saying,
just be grateful for what you have, like this is awesome.
Like back in our day, we didn't have some of
(54:14):
this stuff. You know, it wasn't like, you know, necessarily
technoble and all you could do was go up, down, right, left.
But there's been so much changes with the game that
I just I'm fascinated by and I think Gamecock fans
really appreciate, especially the towels and just the entrance for
two thousand and one Space Odyssey.
Speaker 4 (54:32):
Yeah. I you know, I grew up playing the game
for so many years.
Speaker 3 (54:36):
I hate that a portion of my life where now
granted there was a large portion where I could buy
it because I.
Speaker 4 (54:45):
Was an adult.
Speaker 3 (54:45):
But that's one of the things that I saw a
meme yesterday that said, what you're telling me, when I'm an adult,
I can buy all the games you want. It's like, yeah,
but you will have you won't have enough time to
play it. But then, not only that, but with this game, dude,
it took it away from me from some prime sp
ending years I could have had it. Not to mention
for Clemson fans, this is what really gives me the
(55:06):
makes me a little bit angry about it, Mike. I
didn't get Deshaun Watson on the game. I didn't get
Trevor Lawrence in the game. Those years that Clemson was
just a dominant force in college football, the game didn't
even exist.
Speaker 6 (55:24):
So I'm gonna I'm gonna put you on the spot
here and think back to any time here when you
played this game, when you played with a real team,
like you didn't do the creative player Road to Glory
all that kind of stuff. Was there a certain team
that you enjoyed playing with outside of Clempson, Like for me,
(55:44):
I enjoyed those years of doing the triple option with
West Virginia when you had Pat White Noel Devine. I
also enjoyed playing as Arkansas when Darren McFadden was here.
I thought it was just like I mean, in the
video game, he was kind of like a Bo Jackson
type of figure. The way that they made him run
in that game that year was unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (56:04):
Man, I'd have to think back.
Speaker 3 (56:06):
I kind of feel like there was some years where
I always tried to play with like a Northern team
because you might get a little snow, So like I
would use Penn State sometimes for fun. I didn't really
have like an attraction to any specific player, but it
was really at that point more about like the environment
and kind of knowing that that was going to be
(56:26):
a place where I would have home field advantage because
that's kind of been the thing for a while. But yeah,
I would say Penn State was probably if it wasn't Clemson,
That's who I was playing with.
Speaker 6 (56:36):
And that would have been incredible to do in this
era when you think about just the little details. Don't
get me wrong, you still had the white out as
far as like the crowd and just everyone we were
in white. But just seeing the screenshots and some of
the previews, and it's funny you mentioned Penn State. One
of my old college teammates just got hired there and
(56:58):
he's been sharing a lot of the little snipfits with
me because, as you can imagine, they're seeing a lot
of them, and it's just incredible just to see just
how detailed the game really is. And yeah, Penn Say
would be a good one for sure.
Speaker 3 (57:11):
Mike, you'va with us here on the program for a
few more minutes.
Speaker 4 (57:14):
Now.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
One of the former game Cocks that you know, whether
or not Clemson Tiger fans feel one way or the
other about him, is Marcus Lattimore. Obviously, the way his
career end, I think a lot of people feel really
bad about that. But he moved out West, Mike, and
he's been doing some poetry and writing some poetry, and
he even wrote one about Clemson a few weeks ago.
Give us an update what's going on with Marcus Lattimore.
(57:36):
I think some people maybe look at him from Afar
and say, dude, what happened to Marcus Lattimore? Give us
some insight though, into what he is up to these days.
Speaker 6 (57:46):
Yeah, I can tell you is going back to right
before COVID. The plan was after he left his role
as director of Player Development at USC, his plan was
to go over to Europe. He wanted to study the
brain how adolescents, you know, the brain for adolescents and
how they kind of function. He was just fascinated by
(58:06):
that and he wanted to be able to do more
than just the football side of it because he felt
like football was just however when viewed him, which understandably
so right, I mean, he was really good at it.
But what he's done with the poetry, he's been not
only doing it to help himself. He says, it's been
very therapeutic for himself. But a few years back, he
was speaking as a keynote speaker out in I want
(58:30):
to say it was Eugene, Oregon, and there were a
lot of chairmen of this drug rehab center, and what
they did was they said, hey, we think you would
do a really good job teaching our classes to be
able to help out those who are going through a
rehab process, you know, whether it be alcohol abuse or
(58:52):
you know, opioid abuse. And the reason why they feel
that way is it helps them release some of their
thoughts and they're able to come out and they're able
to discover more about them. So, yeah, what Marcus has
been doing over the last two years, he teaches two
different classes three days a week out in Portland, Oregon.
He's teaching what they call pen therapy. So not only
(59:14):
has it been beneficial for Marcus, but it's been very
beneficial for others. And that's something again getting to know
Marcus over the last couple of years, He's wanted to
do more than just football. He wants to help others.
And I think that's the biggest thing that people might
not fully understand about him, is you know him and
I We've had a lot of talks about it. He
(59:34):
loves Columbia, he loves South Carolina. His family's from here.
He loves game cognation. But he felt like if he
just stayed here, he wouldn't allow himself to grow and
he would always just be known as the football player.
So to get out of your comfort zone to do
something like that and be able to say, hey, you
know what, I don't want to just be in a
place where everyone's telling me how great I am. I
(59:56):
want to go out there and create my own identity
outside of football. That takes a lot, and he's certainly
been able to do that number one, but number two
now he's helping out others. So Yeah, he's a new
book that just came out. It's available on Amazon. I
want to make sure that I have the title of
the book correct. It's a It's a read where he's
sharing a lot about himself. But in addition to that,
(01:00:18):
he has some poems in there as well. It's called
Scream My Name, Scream My Name. So it's been very
therapeutic for him and he wants to continue to write books.
So it's a short, little read, but you can find
that on Amazon.
Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
Mike, I know South Carolina fans really appreciate everything he
did for that program and was a dominant player when
he was healthy. Where would he rank? We got about
a minute and a half. Where do you think he
ranks among the greats in Columbia?
Speaker 6 (01:00:47):
So I'm sure some Gamecock fans would have him on
their Mount Rushmore. I actually asked this very question about
a month ago. I kept him off it from just
a college production standpoint, and the reason why was his
work wasn't complete. What he accomplished though when he was
on the field was incredible. But I just feel like
(01:01:08):
when you look at the Mount Rushmore, I would put
I think what I had was I had Clowney, I
had George Rogers. Of course, I had el Sean, and
I want to say that I had Connor Shawer on
it as well. So I'd have to go back and
double check some of the guys that I had, But
Marcus is one of the greatest to ever play at
(01:01:29):
South Carolina. There's no question about it. And I think
obviously his injuries robbed not just him, Gamecock fans, which
is college football fans as a whole of something very
very special. But certainly, I mean when you talk about
just take the production side of it, when you talk
about greatest game Cocks, there's a different class and he's
(01:01:49):
certainly on that. If that makes sense.
Speaker 4 (01:01:52):
There he is.
Speaker 3 (01:01:53):
Mike You've a Gamecockcentral dot Com or Twitter at Mike
Underscore UVA, Mike Man, have a great week.
Speaker 4 (01:01:57):
Appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (01:01:58):
You two sawany there you.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
Go, Mike, you'va Gamecockcentral dot Com quick Break. We'll come
back with more on a Tuesday afternoon. Rocking and rolling
along with you on a Tuesday. That was Mike EVA
before the break. Yeah, you know, he talked about his
South Carolina football Mount Rushmore, and I mean, I've done
(01:02:24):
Clemson Mount Rushmore is over the years. From the outside
though perspective, he got me thinking like who would I like,
who would I say would be on South Carolina's Mount Rushmore?
Because I certainly believe right like you can. You can
do this for other programs. Right, You're allowed to look
(01:02:48):
at another program, think about the history of that program,
and come up with a Mount Rushmore, even if it
is your fine feathered friends peeking over the fence.
Speaker 6 (01:02:57):
So you could continue to peek over the fence at
the best radio.
Speaker 1 (01:03:01):
Showing the nation.
Speaker 3 (01:03:03):
Who would be on that Mount Rushmore? Now, if we're
including coaches, all right, if we're including coaches prior to
Steve Spurrier coming to Columbia, and you're putting a single
coach on that Mount Rushmore, which I think most people
(01:03:23):
would tend to want to do. Right, you want to
put one coach in three players. But if you now,
Alabama fans might say, whoa pump the brake, Swane, we
got to put two coaches and two players. We gotta
put Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. And maybe there are
some programs that do require a couple of coaches, but
I think most programs would require a single coach. You said,
(01:03:46):
this is our greatest coach of all time, and these
are the three best players. So if I were putting
it together for South Carolina, who would I put on
their Mount Rushmore because prior to Steve Spurry, you're putting
Joe Morrison on that list, right, you got to be
(01:04:08):
putting Joe Morrison. What they did in the early eighties,
his untimely death, like, there's a lot that would add
into sort of the allure of why he would be there.
But then when you think about Steve Spurrier and what
he did for South Carolina football, it's hard not to
(01:04:29):
imagine that he would now be the coach that you
would put on that Mount Rushmore. So Steve Spurrier, for me,
would have to be on a coach included football Mount
Rushmore for South Carolina. Now, I'll start with Spurrier knowing
that we can return and take him off if we
(01:04:53):
just did four players for our South Carolina faithful and remember,
Spurry had three consecutive eleven win seasons. And I think
prior to his arrival, if I remember correctly, South Carolina
had never won ten or more games, let alone eleven
(01:05:13):
in a row. Not to mention, in my life, South
Carolina had never beaten Clemson back to back seasons. Spurrier
managed to beat Clemson five consecutive times. He already carried
a boatload of weight from his success that he had
as a head coach at Florida as well, and that
(01:05:34):
only carried over in Columbia. Next up on that list,
I would have to say George Rogers. He won the
Heisman Trophy for crying out loud. I don't know if
he was a better running back than Marcus Lattimore if
we talk about just the sheer skill set and everything.
I think Rogers was playing in a lot, you know,
(01:05:55):
a much different era in terms of the number of
carries and things of that nature. But he's the only
only Heisman Trophy winner, winning it back in nineteen eighty,
rushed for five thousand plus yards in his career. His
number thirty eighth retired in Columbia, So I think Rogers
would have to go on that list. After that, there's
(01:06:15):
a couple of names I would think about, Sterling Sharp,
Connor Shaw, Marcus Lattimore, Ja Davion Clowney, Alshon Jeffery that
Mike you'vea mentioned. But if you pin me down and
you said you gotta take another one. I don't know
if it's my old age or or what's affected me
(01:06:38):
on this thought, but I would put Sterling Sharp in there.
Sterling Sharp is going to be South Carolina's first NFL
Hall of Famer. He was kind of ahead of his time,
I think in terms of his skill set as a
wide receiver, and so knowing all of that, I tend
(01:07:03):
to lean in on and say, you know what I
think Sterling Sharp. For me, I think Sterling Sharp would
be on my South Carolina football mount Rushmore. And that
leaves us one remaining spot, Jadeveon Clowney Connor Shaw. That
(01:07:26):
is a tough argument one way or the other. For
a couple of reasons. I think I will go with
Jadeveon Clowney first and foremost. He was the number one
overall pick in the NFL Draft, although he has not
had a number one pick career number two. I have
(01:07:49):
often said that as a recruit, I'm not sure I
ever saw a better player, and I quite frankly can't
imagine what clown he could have done at Clemson and
what Clemson maybe could have been a little bit earlier.
Even though the Tigers had some elite defensive linemen. We
talked about that the other day, They've never had number
(01:08:13):
one overall pick elite defensive linemen. I mean just freakishly
gifted in terms of his athleticism and explosiveness. That hit
against Michigan. I believe that was the outback Bowl, one
of the more insane plays I think anybody's ever seen.
So I think that would be my list, starting with
a coach, Spurrier, George Rogers, Sterling Sharp, and then Jadavion
(01:08:36):
Clowney would be fourth. If I was not putting coaches
on there, I think I would have to put Connorshaw
for South Carolina fans. If it were only players, I'd
say Rogers, Sharp, Clowney, and Connorshaw. And the thing about
Connorshaw to me was he was so difficult to beat.
(01:08:59):
I think he's the winningest quarterback in program history. Gamecock fans,
you can fact check me on that, but I just
remember that if he was on the field, And again,
I don't think he was like the greatest, like a
better quarterback probably in terms of just being a quarterback,
may have been a guy like Spencer Rattler, But Connor
(01:09:22):
Shaw I think would be at the top of the list.
Let me know what you think, game Cox. Hit us
up on Twitter at Clemson's Sports or hey, you could
text me AO three four five h zero zero eighty six.
You know what, that was kind of fun. When we
come back, let's look at another rival for Clemson. How
about the Georgia Bulldogs. Let's talk about it next, Rocking
and rolling along with you the show that shakes the
(01:09:43):
Southland Clemson Sports Talk at three four five h zero
zero eighty six text line.
Speaker 4 (01:09:49):
Phone line. Don't forget you could be a part of
the program.
Speaker 3 (01:09:52):
On our website clemsonsports dot com, where you might see
an ad for Alumni Hall. Speaking of Alumni Hall on
the corner of campus on College Avenue of downtown Clemson.
It's Alumni Hall for all your officially licensed Clemson merchandise, hats,
t shirts. He'll get gear Moore go check them out today.
It's Alumni Hall where Tiger fans shop. All right, So
(01:10:13):
we were talking about the Mount Rushmore South Carolina football
thanks to Mike Eva, and that got me thinking about, like,
what about another team. It was kind of fun to
go through South Carolina and give some insight into how
(01:10:34):
I perceived their program. But what about Georgia. Georgia, there
is a bit of a conundrum that I think probably
exists for a portion of Clemson faithful. It's with a
legendary head coach, right like Danny Ford at Clemson versus
(01:10:59):
the new guy who's actually won a couple of championships
and won more championships than the original version. Right like
Danny Fords for so many years would have been on
that Mount Rushmore. And for some of you, maybe danny
Ford still is, and maybe it's danny Ford and Dabbo
then are on Clemson's Mount Rushmore. But I think most
(01:11:21):
people in Tiger Town probably have slid Danny off, and
Vince Dooley in Athens Georgia is a similar figurehead for
the history of that program. But then there's Kirby Smart,
who has pretty quickly jumped onto that Mount Rushmore. Now
(01:11:42):
here's where maybe something like that could change, Right. I
think Vince Dooley was at Georgia for twenty five some
odd years and then spent time in the athletic department.
Speaker 4 (01:11:55):
But if if Kirby Smart were to pack his.
Speaker 3 (01:12:00):
Bags and go coach at Alabama, if say things don't
work out for Kellen to board Alabama even though he
won two titles, I think people would say, turncoat, you've
been addict Arnold, and they would immediately elevate Vince Duley
back onto the Mount Rushmore if they had taken him
(01:12:23):
off in lieu of Kirby Smart. You follow what I'm
saying there, So let's start. I think there have been
some really good players at George over the year, certainly
(01:12:45):
hershel Walker comes to mind, but I have to start
with the coach, and if I'm gonna follow my own
rules and sort of begin there, I think you have
to go with Kirby Smart. Two national titles, how good
they have been, the job they've done recruiting. They've got
(01:13:06):
some definite off the field issues with driving more than
anything else that have really kind of affected some of
the view of Georgia from the outside. But Kirby Smart
has a chance to be known as the greatest coach
(01:13:28):
in Georgia football history as long as he doesn't do
anything to shoot himself in the foot. So we'll start
with Kirby Smart. Next up would have to be much
like South Carolina, a Heisman Trophy winner, an elite running
back in the early eighties when things were a little
bit different in the game.
Speaker 4 (01:13:45):
I put herschel Walker on that list, leading the.
Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
Bulldogs to a national championship as a freshman. If you
ever watch like they did a sec story of herschel Walker.
It was absolutely phenomenal, one of the great running backs
in the history of the sport, if not the greatest
in the minds ie of some people. So that's two
(01:14:12):
of my four spots. Next up, kind of like Connor
Shaw is what I would venture to guess is not
the most skilled quarterback that's ever come through and played
football at Georgia. Probably a guy like Matt Stafford would
be listed as such. Heck, I would argue Carson Beck
(01:14:32):
is probably a better quarterback than this individual, but he
wasn't a better winner, and that would be Stetson Bennett.
He was a quarterback for those two national titles and
a little undersize, certainly not the biggest arm, but definitely
led the Bulldogs in their golden era in college football
(01:14:57):
at least up until this point. Right, it's kind of
set the stage for perhaps more titles. And lastly, I
think I probably would go with David Pollack. You know,
Pollack was a menace when he played, and unfortunately a
(01:15:17):
neck injury in the NFL reduced his NFL career to
not being a whole lot. And he's better known for
his time on college game day, and he doesn't look
like he could have been a big time defensive lineman.
But when he left Georgia he was the school's all
time sack leader. He had a play against South Carolina. Ironically,
(01:15:43):
he had to play against South Carolina. I can't remember
who the game quarterback was. Maybe Savelle Newton throw it
back into the way back archives. Maybe it was even
before Savelle, and he ripped the ball as the quarter
on it and intercepted it, like landed on the ground
with the ball in his hand for a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (01:16:04):
I mean, it was one of the.
Speaker 3 (01:16:05):
Most athletic plays that at that point anybody had really
ever seen from a defensive lineman with that kind of size.
So that would be That would be my list for Georgia.
I would say Kirby Smart's got to be one. I
would say, just because it's two national titles. Again, I
(01:16:26):
think that can be. I think he could be moved
off pretty quickly if we're gonna put a single coach
up Hersha Walker would be.
Speaker 4 (01:16:33):
Second on that list.
Speaker 3 (01:16:36):
Stetson been it would be third, and I would say
David Pollock would be fourth, and the next person kind
of going on would certainly be Vince Dooley. If and
I think the only if would be if Kirby smart
coached his way off by doing something that stabbed that
(01:16:56):
stabbed the Georgia Faithful in the back. Eight Kirby, you
might say, all right, quick break, we'll come back. We'll
put a big old bow on the Tuesday edition of
the show, The Shakes of South Wane keep a lot
right here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred and of
course around the world on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (01:17:17):
What have you done for me lately? It's a fair question.
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Lucky for us at Clemson, the answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately? And what have
you done?
Speaker 2 (01:17:36):
Always are the same.
Speaker 5 (01:17:43):
We win.
Speaker 3 (01:18:30):
Final segment on a Tuesday Clemson Sports Salt and Swan
hanging out with you. We are where you are TikTok Instagram, Facebook, Twitter.
Always appreciate each and every one of you for following
us thirty five thousand people over on Twitter. Golly, that
was a pretty fun little little segment there, or two
(01:18:52):
segments really talking about the Mount rushmorees of a couple
of rival schools. I might have to keep that up
for a few more days here this summer, we get
closer to the ACC kickoff South Carolina and the SEC
media days coming up next week. We're off next week,
by the way, speaking of next week, I'm going to
be on vacation, taking my official summer vacation. But I
(01:19:16):
definitely I mean, I could see looking at like Florida State,
or talking about maybe Tennessee and some more regional local programs.
Like I guess I could venture out a little further.
The problem going out too far away from kind of
the comfort zone of regionality is that I don't know
(01:19:42):
how to place older players I would really struggle with,
like if you said Southern col unless when I look
at the names, it's just pretty clear cut.
Speaker 2 (01:19:57):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:19:57):
If I have to debate between a running back in
the eighties and maybe a running back in the nineties
and their stats are close, I don't know, you know,
I have my theories on who I would put. But
I could definitely see doing this a couple of times.
A lot of fun looking at the numbers and thinking
about some of the stats that these guys put up,
even if they are you're what some of you might
call your mortal enemy in the South Carolina game Cocks.
(01:20:21):
Still fun to kind of go through those those numbers,
and you know, I think you have to wonder we
taught with Mike. You've about Marcus Lattimore. Could Latimore have
climbed onto that list had he never have been injured?
You know, if he was just healthy throughout his career
(01:20:42):
kind of given the way he looked at times, could
could he have been I think fourth on that list
instead of Connor Shaw. I think it would have been close.
I think it would have been close, but right now,
just kind of given the whole, the whole perspective, I
think Shaw would have been on that list of the
South Carolina Mount Rushmore in college football a zero three
(01:21:05):
four or five oz zero zero eighty six. You know,
today was also the kickoff of Amazon Prime Day, and
I believe they're going for four days this year. Let's
see eight, ninth, tenth, and eleven, expanding it to four days.
I have a major criticism of this event. It wasn't
always like this, and I don't know if prices of
(01:21:30):
things have just I know inflation and everybody talks about that.
But here's what I want to say, I don't know
if the prices of things that are sold on Amazon
have just come down to the point of where it
is incredibly difficult on a special day to find like
these elite level deals, because that's the thing that I
(01:21:51):
feel like you used to find on Amazon Prime Day
that I don't really see anymore. Back when this thing
kicked off, you could find real tremendous deals, and there
are certainly some along the way, but I was looking
for some specific items. And that's the thing about it.
(01:22:13):
You have to understand that specific items that you're looking
for may not be like a superb deal. Here's what
will be a superb deal. I can guarantee you this
any Amazon product. You need, an Amazon Echo, you need
an Amazon tablet, you need anything like that that Amazon
(01:22:38):
owns so that they can get their grubby little fingers
in your home. And I'm not saying it's a bad thing.
I've got Amazon Echoes all.
Speaker 4 (01:22:47):
Over the house. I absolutely love them.
Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
I mean, you go compare the price of a Soose
system versus buying you five or six Amazon Echoes and
having those play in a group called Everywhere where they're sinked.
It's incredibly difficult to say, yeah, go with the so nos.
(01:23:09):
But on Amazon Prime Day, that is one thing that
is absolutely going to be on sale and a deal
Amazon devices thirty five percent off, fifty percent off, depending
on what you're looking at. But everything else I just
I can't find. I'm I have to nose around and
see if I can dig something up that makes me
(01:23:32):
get the warm fuzzies and go, yeah, you know what,
I need that. But things that I had been looking
at prior to Amazon Prime Day that I wanted to
get my hands on, I thought i'd wait until Prime
Day to see if they're discounted. And again we've got
four days. Maybe some deals will come up later, but
for now, I don't really see anything that tickles my fancy,
(01:23:55):
as you say. All right again, thanking to Mike you'va
for hanging out with us here on a Tuesday after
Always great to catch up with him to talk a
little bit about the South Carolina game. Cost git his
insight into I didn't even know he had met Joy
Chestnut until that conversation. If you missed it, catch the
podcast edition, and again, don't forget. We will be right
back here tomorrow at four o'clock on Fox Sports Radio
(01:24:16):
fourteen hundred and of course, you can listen to the
show around the world on the iHeartRadio app. We'll be
back tomorrow at for until then, as always, you'll take
care now, Hey go Tigers.
