Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's time for Clempson Sports Talk with Lawton Swan. Finally,
(00:44):
Clemson Sports Talk has come back to drive time. Hell everybody,
Low Swan back in the saddle once again. It is
the show that Shakes the South Lay and Clemson Sports
TALF for you each and every afternoon as you make
your way around the great state of South Carolina and beyond,
listening to us on incredible radio stations like Fox Sports
(01:06):
Radio fourteen hundred the Midlands, heard around the world on
the iHeartRadio application. Download it today, It's free the website,
but the dot com on it, Dog on it that's
Clemson Sports TALT dot com eight O three four five
zero zero eighty six. And of course, the Show that
shakeseare south Land, brought to you in part by our
(01:27):
good friends over at METS Plumbing seven three two drip,
Drip drip. You know the jingle seven three to two drip.
That's Mets Plumbing, mets plumber dot com. I gotta get
the little ooh Mets Plumbing, mets plumbing dot com. But
(01:48):
we do appreciate them being a part of the program
and supporting us along with our other sponsors. Here the
Masters underway, the first round available to watch on ESPN
when I last checked it. Again, you gotta think I'm
you know, I'm somewhat with the way I do this show,
(02:11):
I'm somewhat of a time traveler point, and so that
means like where I am now is not where you
are now, oddly, But to give you a little update
(02:33):
on the Masters, four players when I was watching were
tied at four underpar in second place, including Scottie Scheffler.
The top player at that time was minus six through
ten holes and that was justin Rose. So that's where
(02:59):
things were when I tuned in. Corey Connor, Scottie Scheffler
and Tyrel Hatton. We're all at four under and so
we'll try our best to keep you updated here as
we moved through today. Tim Bray will join us in
hour number two. He loves talking about the Masters, and again,
(03:23):
as I mentioned yesterday, for the eleventh time since he's
played professionally, former Clemson Tiger golfer Lucas Glover will be
on the course at Augusta. Not off to a great start.
(03:43):
Glover when I saw it through nine was plus five.
Now to put that into perspective of where he is
currently or where he was when I was watching, he
was tied for eighty eight. There are only ninety five
(04:05):
players in the field. Nick Dunlap had himself a day
finished plus eighteen. Not good there, But to give you
some idea about it, Lucas Glover is well behind Bernhard Longer,
(04:25):
who is playing his final Masters. Longer is currently let's see,
he finished the day at plus two, so a lot
of work left for Lucas Glover to get back in
the mix of Augusta in round one A three four
(04:47):
five zero zero eighty six. That is the text line
in the phone line. And again, our good buddy Christopher
Thompson's over there in Augusta given updates throughout the day
so you'll be able to keep up with what's going
on here on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred as well.
But that's where I was when, or where the tournament
(05:07):
was when I was recording this segment just a little
bit ago. Again, last night, the Clempson Tiger baseball team
took on Gardener Webb. Clemson came away with a four
to two victory. It was a battle, don't get me wrong.
I did start to debate if some of that jet
(05:30):
that jet lag was gonna catch up with Clemson, even
with a few days being back across the country. But
it was Jacob Jarrold's lead off home run in the
sixth inning, which was the first of two home runs
for him in the game, broke it two to two
tie to give Clemson a four to two win. The
third ranked Tigers getting the job say it with me now,
(05:52):
Dne the job done. Wednesday night. Clemson now thirty one
to five, winning their sixth game in a row. The
Running Bulldogs confirmed. Running Bulldogs dropped to fourteen and twenty
on the season. Clympson scored two runs in the third inning,
highlighted by Colin Preach run scoring single. Then the Running
(06:15):
Bulldogs played a run in the fifth inning on a
two out single by Ryan Kanal. They would tie the
score at two to two later in the frame on
an attempted double steal, and then in the sixth inning,
Jerald lined a solo homer to give Clempson the lead,
and then the eighth he tacked onto his hot day
(06:37):
with another home run, his seventh of the year. Drew
Tittsworth gets to win three to zero, pitching a career
long four and a third. The Tigers will host Samford
in a three game series beginning Friday at six o'clock
on ESPNU. So that's where we are. When it comes
(06:59):
to down to the Clemson Tiger baseball team and where
they currently sit and the way they played last night,
We'll catch up with Tim Moray to hear more. We
actually talked to Tim speaking of time traveling. We talked
to Tim Wednesday night on his way home from the game.
He was actually sitting in traffic, sitting in traffic to
(07:22):
head home after Clemson's victory. It was Military Appreciation Day.
The Tigers had on some kind of an olive green uniform.
I thought it was a really good look for Clipson
on Military Appreciation Day. Some great photos were out there
on social media of Eric Backage members of the military.
(07:43):
Good way for the Clipson Tiger baseball team to honor
those individuals. And now Clemson will turn their attention to
the Stanford Cardinal who roll in this weekend. And you know,
for Clemson, look, it's not a flawless program. Excuse me,
It's not a flawless team at this point by any means.
(08:05):
There's plenty of work to be done by this Clemson
Tiger baseball team, But as William Qualkinbush noted earlier in
the week, I mean to be as consistent as these
guys have been and to continue to find ways to
win games. Speaks volumes about the culture that's been built
(08:30):
at Clemson. Eric Beckers met with the media last night
after the game. Here are his comments, along with Jacob
Jerrold's comments after the four to two win over the
running bulldogs of Gardner Webb.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Yeah, you know, we'll take it, certainly, not going to
ever give any any wins back.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
But I don't think we played all that great.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I thought Drew Titsworth was a huge pride spot to retire.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Twelve in a row in the final four.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
That was very impressive and much needed.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
And then obviously JJ's two home runs were a huge
part of the game to take the lead and get
some insurance.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
But you know, told the team after that's, you know.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
The way we came out.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
You can't know, no excuses about travel.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Or jet lag or that nobody cares, but just the
focus and the concentration and some of the mental mistakes early.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
You know, it's just a it's just out of sorts.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
We were drawing a lot of walks and had a
lot of hit by pitches, but never really you know,
cashed in and got the big inning and you know,
didn't have many hits tonight, hit some balls hard, okay,
but you know, just we'll need to play a lot
better than that this weekend.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
And I thought we played really well last.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Weekend at CAL.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
I thought we played three outstanding games, but for whatever reason.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Had one of those, you know, one of those lolls
of the midweek where you know, just weren't the same
when the same energy and intensity. So you know, I
need to do a better job getting them ready and
getting them prepared.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
But all in all, we're.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Happy that we won, but certainly not satisfied with this
how we played, because we know we can play a lot.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Better than that.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
I mean, here's Jacob Jerrold's comments following the game as well.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
That is what it is.
Speaker 6 (10:24):
But I just go up there and trying to help
the team have a team team of bat, quality of bat.
I'm just if I just you know, barrel the ball
and you know that's going to help the team, not
only that, but helps morale too. Like if you barrel
ball and you know it gets caught as what it is.
But it's a hard out and you know it kind
of gives them a dugout energy. So that's all I'm
trying to do.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Out there again. That final score four to two last
night over Gardner Web six o'clock first pitch set for tomorrow.
And as I noted when we talked with William Qualkin
Bush about this team, you know, I think like in
basketball this year and the SEC, we kind of downplayed
(11:06):
maybe who you know, how good we thought those teams
were based off of who you played. That also works
in reverse, and what I mean by that is a
lack of top flight opponents can also generate questions about
who you really are. The best team that Clemson has
(11:29):
faced this season is Old Miss. At this point, Old
Miss is currently the sixth ranked team of the country.
They are twenty four and seven. They are the best
team you faced, and they run ruled Clemson in seven innings,
(11:53):
fifteen to five. You don't have the luxury of South
Carolina who you. You don't have the luxury of the
game Cocks being a really good baseball team right now.
It's not to say they're not a good baseball team.
Let me refresh that for our game Cock listeners peeking
over the fence and hanging out with us. They might
(12:16):
be a pretty good baseball team, but they're really bad
in their conference. Two and ten in the SEC with
a matchup coming up tonight at eight o'clock on the
road at College Station against Texas A and M. And
so you can't gloss anything from that. You don't have
(12:41):
a Notre Dame or even a Wake Forest team that's
ranked in the top ten, as those teams have been
in recent years. Your best victories in the conference at
this point are likely your wins that you've had over
Georgia Tech, who is the eighteenth ranked team of the country.
(13:04):
You do have the fortune of a matchup coming up
against Louisville, who is the fourteenth best team in the nation.
But more specifically, and I think more impactful just in
all ways for Clemson at this point would be their
matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs, who are another top ten team.
(13:25):
And so this this team feels a little bit like
a little bit like there's some air in the balloon
that's been placed in there by a pretty fortunate schedule.
And I haven't gone through Arkansas and Texas and LSU
(13:45):
and some of the other top teams of the country, Tennessee,
the reigning defending national champions, haven't gone through and said, okay,
well they benefit from the same thing. Because my gut is,
when you've got those four teams that just mentioned plus
Old Miss in Georgia in the SEC, regardless of maybe
(14:06):
how you think about that conference in baseball or whatever,
which most people tend to really unlike basketball, most people
tend to really respect SEC baseball, it does make you
feel like, okay, well, those teams have probably had some
real grinders, and the Tigers have not had that real
grinded out type ball game against the top play team
(14:29):
outside of getting smoked by Old Miss. Now that was early.
That was in that Shriners Challenge out in Texas. I
mean that was you know, that was an early game.
Was that the second game, third game of the season. Yeah,
third game of the season. So you know, it's tough
(14:49):
to really go yeah, that would happen again. But what
I do feel confident in saying is when you played
the best team that you can play, or that you
have played up to this point, you got run out
out of the building, you got run out of the ballpark,
(15:10):
that would be my concern. The other concern I would
say going into the back end of the schedule in
the postseason is that those measuring sticks you know, I
didn't I guess I should throw Florida Stadium because obviously
they're a number nine team right now in the country.
(15:33):
But those measuring stick games coming late if you were
to lose, would redefine maybe how your season is seen
and maybe even seen inside the walls over at Doug
Kingsmore Stadium for the players. And I was talking to
my son the other day about his soccer team. They're
(15:57):
playing reaching four five and they've been beaten by Chapin twice.
But Chapin is undefeated in the conference and River Bluff
has won the league three consecutive years. But with Chapin
winning twice and being undefeated, you know, you're five and
(16:20):
three is a It doesn't look like a great conference
or a region schedule or region record at this point.
And I think the most notable thing about it is
they got upset by Irmo. Irmo took a one to
zero lead early in the second half. We had a
(16:41):
kid get a red card. But personally, I'm not gonna
be critical of officials, but or referees in this case
in soccer, but I didn't think it should have been
a red I didn't think it should have been a
red card, quite frankly. And so then you have to
play a man down in soccer if somebody gets a
red card, and regardless of who your opponent is, it
(17:01):
is hard to score when you're down to man. And
we generated opportunities, but you're five and three. That lost
to Irmo being the real blimish. But if if Chapin
runs the table, which they are likely to do at
this point, every team in your conference or your region
has two losses, So having three losses isn't like, oh man,
(17:23):
how do we have three losses this year? It's well,
there was a team that went undefeated, and I think
Chapin is going to go undefeated. Flip that back to
the Clemson conversation. At this point, you know, you're thirty thirty,
one and five. You've got a great record, but a
(17:45):
marginal resume. And if you if you were to lose
two out of three against Florida State, now from that standpoint,
you're also going on the road. It's not easy. If
(18:08):
you were to lose to Georgia, if you were to
lose two out of three at home to Louisville, it
pretty quickly resets how good you might actually be. I
think Clemson is a good baseball team, but I also
think they're slightly propped up by their competition at this point.
(18:32):
And that's okay. You are welcome to be propped up
by having success against maybe some sub par competition. But
once you get into the meet and into those games
that are big and are significant, that, in my opinion,
(18:55):
is the moment where you prove who you are. You
win two out of three, or sweep Louisville at home,
you win two out of three at Florida State, you
beat Georgia in the midweek. Like those kind of victories
that Clipses got coming up. These matchups that they've got
coming up after this weekend series against Stanford are the
(19:17):
ones that I think will ultimately tell the story of
seating and who you are going into the postseason. There
is nothing wrong with Clemson's record. Thirty one to five
is spectacular because in baseball it's hard. It's hard to
win every night with all the variables that go into
(19:41):
winning a baseball game. But you've yet to scratch the
surface of your toughest games, and the only time you
played a team that was ranked in that top ten,
you got run out of the ballpark fifteen to five.
All right, quick break, we'll come back with more here
on a Thursday. Stay with us, Lawton Swan with you
(20:01):
on a Thursday. The Masters underway over at Augusta. Our
very own Christopher Thompson on the scene there, keeping you
updated for me where I am Justin Rose, still in
the lead at six under again. Round two is the
key round. That's when you start to have that cut
(20:22):
line put in place, and then the on Beyonce and
the Beauty of Saturday and Sunday the Masters begins to
take over. But you know, we were talking about the
production value of golf and sports. Timbray joins us in
nour number two, and we'll talk with him about it
(20:44):
as well to a degree, because you know, obviously he's
working as kind of a stat guy, sort of a
researcher for a hole. There'll be a guy like Timbrey
on every hole kind of give us some insight to
the analyst and the play by play about you know,
what's happening, or maybe some stat about a kid or
(21:05):
whatever it is. But I was watching some of the
production on the Masters, and what was pretty cool. You know,
they were showing like it would show like where every
player had landed on a particular hole. And then they've
(21:28):
got these like what looked like kind of like billiard
balls or whatever, color coded. So how many eagles have been,
you know, made off of this hole? Where were those balls,
you know, sitting when after the opening, you know, drive
off the tee or whatever. Red ones represent birdies, blue
(21:50):
ones represent pars, and bogies represent or gray represents bogies,
and so you know, it was kind of fascinating to
see like on this particular hole, I think it was
the eighth hole at this point three of the bogies.
(22:14):
There were five total bogies excuse me, six, six bogies.
I only see three of them on the right side
of the screen, but three of the six were from
guys that were well to the right. They weren't necessarily
(22:35):
the longest drive guys either. As a matter of fact,
all the shortest drives, all the players I see that
hit the shortest drives all had pars. All of them
had pars. No bogies off of the shortest drives, you know,
(22:55):
the most accurate in the middle decently long tends to
be the spot where you're seeing the most birdies. Like
it's all this conglomerate, you know, this big conglomerate of
red sitting there in the middle, letting you know that. Okay,
if you drive it down the middle of the fairway,
if you hit it pretty long, you got a great
chance to get a birdie. As a matter of fact,
only one bogie from that upfront group, and it looks
(23:20):
like it was one of the third or maybe fourth
longest drives of the day ended up with a bogie.
But then they were showing like Rory McElroy had the
longest drive on that hole for the day, three hundred
and forty three yards from the tee two hundred and
thirty one yards to the hole. That hole had not
had an eagle on it at all at that point,
(23:44):
and being two thirty one from the hole, one would
guess McElroy would probably, you know, at least make a run,
make a run at it, especially with the clubs and
everything that they've got in place, you know nowadays, and
these guys, boy, they're firing irons from two hundred and
(24:06):
thirty one yards out which you know for me, boy,
you better hit it. Hey, you better hit it. But yeah,
McElroy set himself up on that hole for the first
eagle and of the of the tournament on the eighth
hole and seeing that spread, that shot chart, I guess
(24:27):
you'd call it that spray chart, you know. Just some
of the cool things that they're able to do now
with golf. And you know, I don't know how many
innovations the PGA Tours taken from the Live Tour, but
you know, I think one of the bright spots of
golf has been the innovation that we've seen over the
(24:54):
years and computer technology being able to translate GPA data
to translate the tracking of the ball on the tracking
of the greens or even uh, the swing an analysis
that you've currently got as a matter of fact, for
those of you that maybe don't golf a whole lot,
(25:16):
or maybe for those of you that do, you may
or may not know this, but they've got some really
good phone apps that you can use to analyze your swing.
And I've done that before and it'll say, oh, you're
dipping your head here, you know, and I'm like, what
I felt? That felt like our sell ca smooth swing.
(25:39):
I felt like Ken Grivey junior with that swing. But yeah,
some of the cool analytics and all of that stuff,
I think that's enhanced the broadcast for a lot of people.
I don't know if it's brought in a younger generation,
you know, I do think that the cell phoned generation
is probably not as interested in watching golf as older
(26:02):
generations have been. Golf on a Sunday is a nice
chance to rest. Let's be honest, Golf on a Sunday
is a great way to kick up your feet and relax.
As a matter of fact, this Sunday, I'll be down
(26:23):
visiting with my dad and I'm sure we'll be posted
up with the masters on. But for the younger generation,
I think Tiger Woods did a ton. But I don't
know that even with the graphical enhancements and the things
that they're capable of doing now, with all of this.
(26:47):
As much as I enjoy it, it's enhanced the viewing
quality for I think individuals that already like it, But
for those people that may not have a whole lot
of interest in the sport, I don't know that these
are things that pushed it over the top. And you
think back to like hockey on Fox back in the day,
they tried to have that laser that would follow the
(27:08):
puck to help people that you don't need that anymore
really with high definition TVs. But when somebody hit a
slap shot really hard, it would put like a tail
on it. That Fox tracker. It was pretty cool. But yeah,
the flight track or the ball and all of that
that they've got now, I have no idea how it works,
but it certainly enhances the viewing experience for people that
(27:30):
want to watch the Master's Tournament. Clemson Sports saw the
show that Shakes of south Land on a Wednesday afternoons.
So during the breaks, obviously, I'm watching the Masters, and
they were highlighting the five amateurs that are in the
tournament this year. And I remember when I was a kid,
(27:50):
Chris Patten, the former Clemson Tiger golfer, had a really
good few rounds there at the Masters. I can't remember how,
you know, how well he ended up doing, but I
remember that being like a big deal that he was
playing in the tournament as a I believe it that
at that point a Clemson's student. But you know, I
(28:14):
started thinking about like the NCAA tournament because we just
had it in the rear view, and how we always
love to see a you're kind of an upstart, an
underdog make a run and an amateur's never won the
Masters before. Three have finished second. Frank Stranahan back in
(28:42):
nineteen forty seven, Ken van Chury in nineteen fifty six,
the first year that it was broadcast, and Charles co
in nineteen sixty one. Now, the low amateur you always see, right,
they always bring the low amateur. I don't know how
this turned into Masters sports talk, but here we are.
For two days. We've given you a lot of Masters combo.
(29:06):
Welcome to a boy from the low country or the
gateway to the low Country as we like to call
it over in Barnwell, South Carolina. They do recognize the
low amateur, and that's always a cool moment. That kid
is normally overshadowed tremendously by the individual that actually won
(29:27):
the Masters, and the fact that the amateurs can get
like a thousand bucks and the guy that wins it
was whether I say yesterday three point six million or whatever,
and all of that and the pump, the circumstance, the
green jacket. It's still a cool tradition, but the amateur
can win it this year. Like I mentioned, there are
five Jose Luis Balister, Evan Beck, Justin Hastings, Noah Kent
(29:53):
and Hiroshi Taya or Taya one or the other Tai.
I would argue that, maybe more than any anything else
the masters could present to us compelling final Day Sunday,
(30:15):
all of that, I think the thing that would really
drive us to have major interest across the board would
be an amateur making a run at it. And I
believe a couple of years ago. I believe a couple
of years ago, being twenty twenty three, I'll double check.
(30:36):
I believe there was an amateur that was pretty close
in the past couple of years. It may have been
that kid from A and M Sam Bennett that looked
a little like Dabo Sweeney. I kind of feel like
he might have been the one. Let me see here,
so twenty twenty three I should be twenty twenty four. No,
(31:03):
does not look like it's does not look like that
was the case. Did I sort?
Speaker 4 (31:10):
Am?
Speaker 1 (31:10):
I sorting right here around one to par Scheffler won it. Yeah,
I don't see one. Twenty twenty four, twenty twenty three,
I do see Bennett tied for sixteenth. He would have
been eight under after two days, which probably would have
(31:32):
been pretty good. Maybe it was the year before him.
I thought we had one in recent years where it
was kind of like touching go into the final round.
But maybe I'm maybe I'm just making that stuff up
because I really, honestly, I'm looking back right now and
I'm not seeing it. But I think that would be
a fascinating follow for the Master's weekend. But like I said,
(31:55):
right now, it doesn't look like that's gonna be the case,
given where the amateurs are out of the gates. And
speaking of amateurs, well, I can update you on former
Clemson Tiger golfer who was once an amateur at Clemson,
Lucas Glover, to give you an idea of how his
round is going, because when we first gave you an
(32:17):
update out of the gates, it was not good for Lucas,
who's making his eleventh appearance at the Augusta National Master's
Golf Tournament plus six eighty ninth place out of ninety
five people. Only five players behind Lucas Glover right now
(32:41):
on the course or not on the course. But there
are a couple of guys that have already you know,
wrapped up their rounds. But man, time to turn and burn.
I mean the good news is if you're glover, you
get a couple of birdies, you're right back in the mix.
I mean with the way you know this course is
playing right now. I mean, the greens green looked like
(33:04):
you're putting on marble. I mean I saw a couple
of guys, like one guy he was I think it
was Tyler Hatton. He had what looked like a three
and a half four foot putt, and you know, you
know how good these guys are. And he touched it
and it rolled about four feet past. And it wasn't
(33:25):
like it was a downhill slope. It was you know,
it wasn't anything. There was no like extra curricular to it.
It was just pretty much cut and dry. This is
the you know, this is the run of the mill
three and a half four foot putt. And it went
(33:46):
cruising by like you can't imagine. They always say, you know,
never up, never in. You know, you don't want to
leave a putt short because you know that's not going
in either. Well, he rode that thing by like it
was a he was cruising Town. Meanwhere right, Pat? I
(34:10):
couldn't believe it, and it kind of made me think,
at what point in the Masters tournament, you know, first round,
when does it really hit you?
Speaker 7 (34:21):
Man?
Speaker 1 (34:21):
I'm playing at the Masters, because you know, you get
the jittery yips on that final round, especially you're if
you're in the mix. And only three times in Masters
history have there been back to back champions. Scottie Scheffler
today sitting in second place, Jack Nicholas in sixty five
and sixty six, Nick Faldo in eighty nine and ninety
(34:45):
and Tiger Woods Tiger Woods also won the Masters tournament
back to back, So maybe we do have that in
the cards for this weekend. Woods did it No. One
and o two Scheffler again, the twenty two four champion
at minus four. He finishes the day quick bray. We'll
put a ball on our number one right after this
(35:07):
stay with us coming up around the band on Clempson
Sports Talt Legendary Clips and sid Tim Burray joins us

So this past Monday, just a couple of days ago,
was the National Championship with the Florida Gators coming from
behind trailing most of the game against Houston to win
(36:16):
their third national title in what the past seventeen years
or whatever that number was. But anyway, I came across
the call from the Spanish broadcast of the game, and
it's spectacular because you can hear at the end the
(36:39):
Spanish speaking broadcaster say, Houston, you have a problem something loose, Gators,
you know, it's awesome. This is spectacular here. I love
great soccer calls. Listening to the call of the Spanish
announced team on the Final four or the National Championship game.
As Houston brings the ball up the court, down by two,
(37:05):
Cruze and camp Tinkoa catch up.
Speaker 8 (37:17):
Yeah, come on, Hughs, don't you have a problem loose
diangos compil this.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Pot seto conside Los Gators champoones the champions of the
Gators is how he said it. I don't know. That
was amazing. What a call, Houston, you have a problem.
That really cracked me up. It really did another thing
that cracked me up last night. And and Twitter is
great for this, at least for my feed, you know,
(37:53):
because your feed gets kind of customized by what you
like or what you watch. Uh, the analytics of what
you've done, you know, kind of reads into it and
plugs in stuff that you would probably engage with. Well,
of course, the Golden State Warriors you're winding down the
regular season. Steve Kerr was frustrated with Buddy Heald. He'll
(38:17):
who played at Oklahoma, a known shooter in college, still
shooting in the NBA, but he's on the team with
Steph Curry, and Steph Curry is the greatest three point
shooter of all time. And Steph Curry was open on
the play and Buddy Hill didn't pass in the ball.
And so when they get to the time out, Steve Kerr,
who's got a great sense of humor. You know, Kerr
(38:39):
coached with San Antonio under coach Popovich. Steve Kerr basically introduces, now,
Buddy Heild has been on the team for what a
year or two now, I think, introduces Buddy Heel to
Steph Curry. Here's that interaction. Check this out, Buddy, Steph Curry,
Buddy Hill, I want you, got your Meetia to other say,
(39:00):
hell lot of stuff. He's the greatest suitor in the
history of the world. Open you do. I love you,
Buddy Rod, I love you. He's wide open, but he
he'll says he came open late. He's the greatest shooter
in the history of the world. And he can't get it,
couldn't game the ball. So yeah, those are two pretty
(39:23):
spectacular moments over the past twenty four that I saw
over on social media. Buddy Heal being introduced, being introduced
to Steph Curry, and then that the ending call of
that Houston, Florida matchup with the Houston you have a
(39:47):
problem final thing here now, number one, and we'll get
the Tim Murray around the bin. So I think there's
a little bit of a misconception about the achievement of
Alex Sovet and I don't want to diminish surpassing Wayne
Gretzky in terms of goal scored in NHL history, right,
(40:08):
Wayne Gretzky. Ironically, these two guys played almost the exact
same amount of games when Ovechkin passed him. Wayne Gretzky
had played in fourteen hundred and eighty seven games in
his career, scoring eight hundred and ninety four goals. Ovechkin
had played him one less game, fourteen eighty six and
scored eight hundred and ninety four. So just over the
(40:30):
pace of Gretzky, just barely by a game, and he
did surpass the great one. And I feel like it
got a lot of noise and a lot of people
were talking about and that's awesome for Ovechkin. But what
I do think people miss out on is that when
(40:50):
Wayne Gretzky retired, it wasn't so much being the all
time goal scorer that separated him from the pack. It
was that he was the all time point scorer in
hockey history, and with the most career points, he is
far and away still the greatest. In his career wayn
(41:15):
Gretzky scored eight hundred and ninety four goals and had
one thousand, nine hundred and sixty three assists over his career.
That's a grand total of two thousand, eight hundred and
fifty seven points. Alex Ovechkin right now, after playing in
the same amount of games, only has sixteen, one hundred
(41:36):
and nineteen points. He's twelve hundred points behind. He only
has seven hundred and twenty four assists in his career.
Gretzky had nearly three times to assist nineteen hundred and
sixty three. So if you thought when alex Ovechkin passed
Win Gretzky, which I love hockey, I don't watch it
(41:57):
daily during the regular season, But if you thought, oh man,
I never thought Wayne Gretzky's number would be taken, Well
it wasn't just his goal scored, not his all time
career points record. That's still very much intact and will
not be threatened by anyone anytime soon. Quick break, we'll
(42:20):
come back. Tim Berray joins us around the band and
stay with us.
Speaker 5 (42:25):
Each time for Clipson Sports Talk with Lawton Swan.
Speaker 1 (43:05):
It is our number two. That's drive time right here
on the show The Shakespare south Land, Clemson Sports Salt
and Swan hanging out with you coming up in just
a second. Legendary clemsont sid timber Ray joins the program
on a Thursday afternoon, fresh off of Clemson's four two
victory over Gardner. Webb actually caught up with Tim on
(43:27):
the way home from Clemson's matchup with the Bulldog, so
we'll talk with him about that and also today's Masters
tournament that gets underway in Augusta, and of course, the
Show That Shakespare south Lane brought you in part by
our good friends over at mets Plumb in seven three
two drip drip drip. You know the jingle seven three
(43:49):
to two drip, that's Mets Plumbing, mets Plumbing dot com boy,
I'm not I didn't I didn't do so well today
today Mets Plumbing, mets Plumb and die. That's their new
little jingle. I grew up on seven three to two
drip drip Drip Drip. Anyway, we appreciate them in all
(44:10):
of our sponsors being a part of the program. All right.
Tim Bray joins US four to two last night in Tigertown.
Drew Titsworth gets the win. He goes to three and
zero on the season. The Tigers improved to thirty one
and five this year. So fresh off of a visit
to the ballpark the night a Clipson four two victory
(44:31):
over guard Web, Tim Bray, Tim, welcome in. How was
the game tonight?
Speaker 5 (44:35):
Well, it was good. It was kind of a low
scoring game. Again, there were only six total hits in
the game, I believe, and so it was pretty well
played for a Wednesday night. I'm sure the coach back,
which was a little bit concerned when you make that
long road trip back. They didn't get back till five
(44:55):
o'clock in the morning Monday morning. So Trice smart move
that he delayed the start of this game until Wednesday.
I mean when he did the schedule, I noticed that
Tech went out and played Stanford and then they had
to come back and play Offurn on Tuesday night. After
they must have gotten back very late from the West Coast,
(45:15):
and they ended up losing them.
Speaker 4 (45:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
I thought about that too when I saw that Clemson
had a game on Wednesday, and we taught with William
qualkin Bush after his return trip. And even for him,
you know, look he's older than these players, but that's
a haul. And the thing I noticed I started looking
kind of through the schedules, it looks like the Atlantic
Coast Conference did try to do. You know, there's not
much they can do to really help Stanford and Cal,
(45:38):
but it does look like that the teams that traveled west,
whether you went to Stanford or whether you went to Cal,
you got to return visit from the other West Coast school.
And I would imagine that's probably something in the Atlantic
Coast Conference is is going to be, you know, try
to do as much as possible. But one interesting thing
that qualk said to me is after just that one,
(46:00):
he said, I just don't see how that this is
sustainable for the the you know, not football, but for
baseball and volleyball and soccer and tennis and whatever. I mean,
it is kind of a crazy trip.
Speaker 5 (46:16):
Well, you know, even basketball. So here's a stat for you.
The men's basketball there were nine teams that had to
do the Wednesday Saturday and they were consistently the whole
time that you played two teams to go out and
play Wednesday and Saturday on the West Coast. So those
(46:37):
teams when they came back the AC team made it
that their next game was at home on a Wednesday night.
But those teams when they got back from the West
Coast were just two and seven and Wednesday and those
Wednesday night home games. So obviously, even though they didn't
play the Wednesday, there was definitely a hangover. And when
(47:00):
you figure what you know, usually gonna win sixty percent
of your games at home at the ACC teams were
just two and seven at home after making the trip
out west.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Wow, that's a pretty impressive stat and obviously one that
it'll be interesting to kind of follow that next year
to see if that trend sort of continues in the
Atlantic Coast Conference Again. Tim Berey with US year on
the program talking about this Clemson Tiger baseball team. Obviously
one of the top teams in the country, Tim, but
they're not without their flaws. And one of the things
(47:31):
that I think you kind of see, even with their
incredible record, and I was looking at the schedule ahead,
I mean, they got a chance to really have a
special regular season. But I do feel like they're getting
a little more comfortable at the plate, and maybe even
some of the newcomers like Priest. I just think that,
you know, early in the season, they might have been
pressing a little bit. I don't know enough about the game.
(47:53):
I played it sparsely growing up, But I mean, what's
kind of been your vibe after getting a chance to
see them tonight and throughout the season of kind of
where they are right now offensively because obviously Purify and
Cantarella they kind of have a different swagger about them.
But what about some of the other guys in the
lineup right now?
Speaker 5 (48:12):
Well, you're right, I mean, that's kind of the questions
that I have. I mean, tonight Clemson only had four
hit in winning the game, and the ratio of hits
to runs is that a lot of games it's just
one to one. Now they cover up a multiple of
sins because of smart baseball, a lot of good moves
(48:34):
by Eric Becketts. I think he's an outstanding coach, manager,
whatever you want to call it. And tonight the long
ball did win the game for Clemson, as Gerald hit
two home runs and that ended up being the difference
in the game. But you know, just four hits the
entire night, winning a lot of close games, which is
(48:55):
the son of a good team. Didn't have an error
the three games out California over the weekend. But if
you look at the grand scheme of baseball and you
do think that the Tigers are going to have to
hit a little bit better than nine guys that started tonight.
The top three in the order were hitting over three hundred,
but the bottom six, none of them were hitting over
(49:18):
three hundred for the course of the season.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
Tim Berray agains on Twitter at Timberray and I do
want to get to the Masters with you because I
know of your affinity for golf and that event. But
first I do want to ask you. You know Clemson
Spring game was this past weekend and you didn't get
a chance to see it, right, You weren't there, correct?
Speaker 5 (49:39):
I did not. I was working to Valeria, Texas Open
for NBC.
Speaker 1 (49:44):
So based off of what you've gathered though, much like
William Qualkin, but she was across the country. What did
you kind of ascertain over the past few days, Tim,
from the people you've been able to kind of talk
to about their feedback from Clemson spring game, well.
Speaker 5 (50:02):
Number one thing I heard the most was people enjoyed
it because it was it was just more efficiently run
because you didn't have all those television timeouts. They got
it done in two hours, but ran a lot of
plays they had the offense against the defense. So you
know a lot of those spring games when you split
(50:24):
the teams up, just by the nature of your depths,
you're going to have a lot of gaps when it
comes to the talents, and maybe coaches aren't going to
really be able to evaluate like they would I would
like to, So I think Dabbo had to be pleased
with the just the ability to evaluate a lot of positions.
The player I heard the most about, of course, was
(50:47):
the transfer wide receiver Tristan Smith at what podcast is
for one hundred and thirty seven yards at a seventy
two yard reception in the game. So you just heard
a lot about the quarterbacks doing well and the offense,
you know, doing pretty well. But the big thing clumps
(51:11):
that's been missing at the wide receiver position is like
a six foot five guy who catch the ball in
traffic can be a difference maker into plays and it
sure sounds like the transfer of pickup is Smith is
going to be that guy.
Speaker 4 (51:24):
You know.
Speaker 1 (51:24):
The other thing too, I think that everybody was kind
of anxious to see, and I don't know that it
necessarily played out in front of everybody to the degree
that maybe it would have if you were playing an
actual scrimmage or if you were playing like, maybe we'll
get a chance to see next year if we're fortunate,
maybe a couple of different teams playing against one another
for a spring game is just what Clemson's defense will
(51:48):
be this year under Tom Allen. One of the things though,
that everybody talks about Tim is his energy, and he's
got the raspy voice I think reminds a lot of
people of print minibles. From that standpoint, they talk about
him having a micro phone out at practice. Uh, you've
had a chance to be around him a little bit.
What have you gathered from one of the you know,
best defensive coordinators in college football? And quite frankly, I
(52:10):
love that he's changed that, you know, from turnovers to
takeaways and even in the spring game scoring guy, they
listed them as takeaways, which again kind of gives you
a little nod to the change over there at the
defensive coordinator spot.
Speaker 5 (52:26):
Yeah, I I as the practices. I went to two
scrimmages during the spring and and there were more takeaways,
and you know, I normally it might be I mean,
I saw a scrimmage where I think, did Kate throw
two interceptions in the spring game.
Speaker 1 (52:45):
I know he threw threw one day.
Speaker 5 (52:49):
I saw another scrimmage where he threw a couple, and
you know, normally you might worry about that, but I
think it was better to see the defense do that.
You know, Kate at thirty six suchdown passes in just
six interceptions all of last year. Uh So it tells
me that the defense was pretty opportunistic to do that
(53:11):
against Kate and then and then some of the other quarterbacks.
So that part of it was certainly certainly good to
good to uh see. And I think there are a
number of you know guys back them. Please what you're
gonna see at linebacker you got Woods and Dany Brown,
and I think the defensive line is going to be
fine and for good things about the transfer from Purdue.
(53:35):
So yeah, I'm excited about the defense. And I think
he can do uh for the defense, which coach Luke
did last year. For the offensive line.
Speaker 1 (53:45):
Timber able to share on the program, and again he
was leaving the Clemson and Gardner web game last night.
This is Wednesday. I'm talking to Tim, but a Thursday addition.
So the Masters is underway right now over the US
to National Tim, as I mentioned, I know that's a
venue that is near and dear to your heart. I
(54:07):
was looking back. CBS has actually had the broadcast rights
to this thing since nineteen fifty six, seventy years, when
they covered only holes fifteen through eighteen with six black
and white cameras, and I started thinking about the way
it's done now and the things that you see kind
of being on the other side of the camera from
(54:27):
the statistical standpoint, And I think in two thousand, I
want to say it was two thousand and two, Tim
might have been the first year the Master's covered all
eighteen holes with you know, spotters and the statisticians and
everything that you do give us some insight into what
maybe that's like, not necessarily at the Masters per se,
(54:48):
but in what you do in setting up the analyst
and what's coming through and how you know, kind of
give us a peak behind the curtain.
Speaker 5 (54:59):
Well, the main things as a researcher, statt whatever you're
gonna call what you know, what I do is you
try to You have to think ahead. And that's what
a lot of the broadcast is about, is uh is
thinking ahead. And we have we have access to all
these different incredible statistics, the shot Link computer which tells
(55:23):
us the yardage on every shot, how many times the
players have gotten up and down out of a the bunker.
You know, with the Valeria Texas Open, we had a
unique sixteenth home where there's a sand trap in the middle,
in the middle of the green, and so obviously people
were interested in how often people hold that stand trap
(55:45):
and how often they were able to get up and
down out of it. We keep we have the program
that keeps amount of feet players making uh and putt butts,
and that was certainly significant on Saturday with when Brian
Harmon was in the lead. He got up and down
(56:07):
nine out of eleven opportunities. He made only thirty one
feet of putt for his eighteen holds. And you would
somebody you might hear that say, well est, very well, well,
actually he did is because he hit his chip shot
so close. He was making a lot of one and
two footers and that was one of the big reasons
(56:27):
that we were able to document, you know, what he
was able to do. But it is amazing though, because
of all the camp I mean, you think about it. Now,
you have more cameras covering a golf tournament than any
other sport. And Tommy roy Is is the producer for
NBC and he has an army of people who are
helping him in the truck. But to follow what all
(56:48):
the golfers are doing on the course at the same
time pretty amazing.
Speaker 1 (56:53):
Now, what year, Tim, was your first trip to Augusta
National for the Masters.
Speaker 5 (57:01):
I went as a fan in nineteen eighty, I believe
when Ballastero's won, and I've been fortunate to go more
years than not since then. There were a few years
when the Clemson Spring Game was on the same weekend
as the Masters, when I was the st idea and
(57:22):
I wasn't able to go. But I'm fortunate I'm able
to go. I'm gonna go on Friday this this year.
And it's it's just it's just such a unique place
and just this and it's even more interesting now because
of the split between the PGA Tour and the Lift
(57:44):
Tour You're gonna have twelve live golfers that will be
playing in the in this tournament, so you're gonna have
all the best players in the world competing, which it's strange,
you know, we have this split in professional golf. But
I think the existence of the live toward does even
make the four Majors even more captivating because it's the
(58:08):
only four times of the year you have all the
best players playing at the same time.
Speaker 1 (58:13):
That's a great point. And again, being a guy that
grew up in the CSR down there in Barnwell, I
mean I've always seen it kind of as you know,
like Willie Walker's chocolate factory, you know, when we drive
by it going to the Augusta Mall or whatever we
were doing as a kid, and you know, from that standpoint,
it really is a special tournament to me. And so
(58:33):
you've had these opportunities. When did it become a special
tournament for you? As I mentioned, it's been on TV
for seventy years. Do you remember watching it when you
were a kid growing up or you know, how did
you kind of fall in love with it?
Speaker 5 (58:48):
Yeah? Oh yeah, I growing up in Connecticut, of course,
didn't matter where it was. I remember watching the Masters
and watched it on CBS and just your year was
just I first loved it. It's at the same course
every year, and so you really get to learn the course,
(59:09):
whether you're watching it on TV or if you get
to go there and see that all the whole, you
really know, Okay, I know exactly where this guy is
or what his shot is going to be because I've
you know, been there and seen it. Pro probably the
most what really put it over the top for me.
I did get to go to the Sunday in nineteen
(59:31):
eighty six Masters when Jack Nicholas made that incredible comeback,
and that was that was just the day I'll never forget.
I stayed to look final in the final pot and
stayed for the green jacket ceremony in the old dicause
I know that was gonna be something that I would
never forget.
Speaker 1 (59:49):
Tim Bray with us year for a few more minutes.
So from that front, I'll ask you a kind of
a strange question. I don't know if this is the
right way to phrase it, but when you go who's
the the most like famous person that you've kind of
walked alongside, Like did you ever go with Danny Ford.
Have you been with Dabos Sweeney? I mean, who you know,
who are you going with?
Speaker 4 (01:00:14):
Wow?
Speaker 5 (01:00:14):
As far as seeing he I'm trying to think of.
I know, I've seen a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:00:18):
Of Well, I just kind of mean like like when
you go, when you go, like, who's the person? Like
I took my sister and my brother in law and
my wife. When I've been like, have you been with
like somebody that other people are going, Oh my gosh,
that's Dabo Sweeney and you're just you know, the guy
with Dabo Sweeney.
Speaker 5 (01:00:36):
No, I haven't. I haven't really gone anybody like like that.
I guess the most famous person I ever took to
the MASTERSS was with Coach well Ahim. I took Coach
Willing one year in two thousand and three, was Jonathan
Bird's first MASTERSS. And he knew Jonathan from when he
was a student athlete. And coach had retired and we
(01:01:00):
got to see jobs and play about thirty holes that
day because it had been a lot of rain the
day before, and this was on a Friday, and and
so we followed. We got really muddy shoes. In fact,
my buddy Stamford Rodgers, who went with us. When he
got back to the car, there were so many he
just took the shoes off and left them there.
Speaker 4 (01:01:21):
And then.
Speaker 5 (01:01:22):
That parking lot is now the practice area, so Damford
Rodgers is The shoes are probably buried somewhere underneath one
of those practice screens.
Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
That is outstanding. Again, Tim Urray here with us on
the Thursday. Tim, always appreciate your insight, love your stories
about the masters. Enjoy all the golf this weekend, and
we'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 5 (01:01:47):
Thanks Lord, good talking to you.
Speaker 1 (01:01:49):
So there you go, the man, the myth, the legend,
Tim Burray. He joined us yesterday again, right after Clemson's
victory over Gardner Webb. The Tigers will face off tomorrow.
They'll get things started against Stanford at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson,
of course, one of the top teams in the country
right now in college baseball. Things get underway tomorrow afternoon.
(01:02:14):
Just as we are going off the air at six o'clock,
Quick rat, we'll come back. We'll hear more from Dabo
Sweeney's time with the media Following Clemson spring game on Saturday,
Clemson Sports saw the show The Shakes of south Land.
On a Thursday that was Tim Bray before the break.
So I told you we'd get to more. Davos Sweeney
from his time with the media following Clemson spring game
this past weekend, and Sweeney was asked about Gideon Davidson
(01:02:37):
in his play and his ability to catch the ball
of the backfield, et cetera. But Sweeney kind of flipped
it and talked about freshman quarterback the lefty Chris Dnson.
We have an article up on the website right now
about it, but here were Sweeney's comments after he was
asked about that.
Speaker 7 (01:02:51):
Hey, you know Dnson, we got him in with early
and we got all of our groups in there. But
Dentson is kid that that he may be really spinning
they you know, but you don't ever see it, and
you don't ever feel it. He's just calm and cool
all the time. That's one of the things I really
(01:03:14):
like about him. He's got a ton of pooise. He's
he's he's he's got to develop his lower half when
it comes to, you know, uh, really delivering the ball
the way he needs to deliver it, and that will come.
He's just a little raw there, but he is smart.
He understands and sees it, but he's instinctive. He obviously
can really really run, but he's just got a lot
(01:03:36):
of poois. And that was really good to see that,
you know, for him to go out there the first
time and just kind of that ball he layered the
wheel route to get out of the backfield, and he
threw a nice other little back shoulder ball to get
as well, kind of falling away from the defense.
Speaker 4 (01:03:51):
It was awesome.
Speaker 7 (01:03:52):
And then Gideon was great, you know, catching the ball
out of the backfield. You know, he's he's he's he's
got it. All I thought, all the backs, I mean,
we got again. I know everybody's going to just question
us all year, and I don't blame you. They got
to go do it, right, They got to go all
go prove it. We can't just talk about it. We
got to go do it. And but but you know,
(01:04:12):
from practice, from meetings, I mean, we're really encouraged from
what we've seen. Uh I thought Azuma may had a
really good day. He's he's stacking days. He's had a
couple of really good days. Adam Randall has been awesome
all spring. I mean, he's been really good. Uh So
I'm really pleased with him. And then Gideon has been great. Obviously,
(01:04:35):
Jay Haynes, I mean he was our most improved player
last year.
Speaker 4 (01:04:38):
Uh, he's out.
Speaker 7 (01:04:40):
Jarvis was having a really good spring and he got
a mid foot spring, so he was out. But it's
a good group. I mean, it's a really good group.
Little Streco Streko gets in there. And you know, Streko's
not big, he's he he's a he can be a
tough matchup from a protection standpoint, so you got to,
you know, be smart with how you but he gets
(01:05:01):
in there.
Speaker 4 (01:05:02):
He's productive.
Speaker 7 (01:05:03):
So I mean it's a deep group and I think
what it's all said done, it'll be a be a
very productive group for us throughout the season.
Speaker 1 (01:05:09):
Dabo Sweeney was also asked about Tristan Smith's seventy two
yard touchdown where right before the end zone he almost
laid the ball down early. Clempson had seen that before
the Ray Ray McLeod win. Most notably, another one happened
in the ACC championship game several years ago, and fortunately
for Clemson it wasn't overturned. And now they coach him
to go hand it to the official, so rest assured.
(01:05:31):
If anything like that ever happens again in a game,
it's not on the coaching staff, according to Dabo Swiney.
Speaker 4 (01:05:36):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we don't.
Speaker 7 (01:05:38):
You know, that's just you know, welcome to Clemson, all right,
been there, done That'll remember we remember when Ray Ray
dropped the ball Nate in the in the championship game
and they reviewed it and it was like, you know,
so that's just something we coach all the time. So
he just I mean it was close. You know, you
had a good opportunity to coach him right there, like
go score, hand the ball to the ref and let's
(01:06:00):
go celebrate with our teammates. But it was a great play,
unbelievable play. I mean, Gifson was right there. Gifson, I
don't think he knew what happened. He was like, what
just happened?
Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
I mean it was like he is He's long debo.
Sweeney also was asked about Clemson's corner back room and
how he would analyze their performance following the game, and
the course they already lost one kid is Tavoy Fagan
went into the transfer portal. But here's Sweeney, after the spring.
Speaker 7 (01:06:28):
Game, they've all gotten better, still got work to do, Ashton, Ashton,
we had to. He actually kind of reinjured himself, you know,
and so we had to kind of get him cleaned
up so he'll be back, you know, ready to go.
But he was having a really good spring. I feel
great about Ashton and a V And you know, we
(01:06:50):
had no Jay Lou this spring, so I think, you know,
Jay Lou gives us.
Speaker 4 (01:06:54):
That gives us.
Speaker 7 (01:06:55):
Three like really confident veteran guys that I think will
be ready to play. And then after that, we gotta
we gotta have some growth. The guys are coming, They're
they're not where they need to be yet, but we
have made progress. And Strozer is one of those guys
for sure. Gibson is definitely one of those guys. We
need both of them to take that next step. And
(01:07:19):
you know, Shelton was having a really good spring at
Nickel and then he got hurt. But he can also
go play corner. Tink has also had a really good
spring for us. We feel good about the role that
he's creating for himself. But we got to keep got
to keep developing those guys at corner.
Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
Dabos Wheney was also asked about transfer defensive end slash linebacker,
a hybrid Jeremiah Alexander and his consistency that they've seen
throughout the spring.
Speaker 7 (01:07:47):
I would say early he got more consistent, you know
early again, new terminology. H He's the hard part for
him is over because he really hadn't really played backer,
and he did the transition at at Alabama. But now
he comes here and he's still transitioning into a position,
butnounced a new scheme and terminology and all that.
Speaker 4 (01:08:06):
So I would say he kind.
Speaker 7 (01:08:08):
Of gained his confidence and consistency as he went. I
thought he had a really good day today. Made a
couple of tough tackles. You know Keith Adams. You know
every time Keith, you know, doesn't even mention Keith. You know,
he's hammerhead. I mean, you know he's he's just kind
of we have our all of our backs, and then
you have Keith is like his own like person because
he's just unique.
Speaker 4 (01:08:29):
When he runs the mall, he punishes.
Speaker 7 (01:08:31):
People and I mean he rarely ever gets stopped. And
there was one particular play out there that thirty five
got up under him and and you know, it was
kind of like two bulls running into each other right there.
It was good to see he's physical he's a bumper,
and again I thought he had a really productive days.
Speaker 4 (01:08:49):
He's he's put he's put a good week or.
Speaker 7 (01:08:50):
So together, and you know all those backers, I mean
it's been it's been a fun scring man.
Speaker 4 (01:08:57):
I think d has really improved.
Speaker 7 (01:08:59):
We haven't had Cob out there with three three scholarship
guys haven't been out there all spring. No Kobe, no
Jamal Anderson, and no Logan Anderson, who's our signing who
we're really excited about.
Speaker 4 (01:09:11):
None of those guys were out there. So all those
guys have made a jump. You know, C J. Cooper
Taylor is a thumper.
Speaker 7 (01:09:17):
He's shown some signs wood as is you know, cutting
down on his mistakes and getting better. And so the whole,
the whole group I think took a good step forward.
And then you know a kid named Fletcher Cotherine who's
on year four with us out out of Tiohannah. He's
he's he's done a lot of work and he's a
productive guy. Came in here weak and probably about one
(01:09:39):
hundred and ninety nine pounds two hundred and he's about
two twenty five. He's strong, he's long, and he's a hitter.
Speaker 4 (01:09:46):
So you know it's pleased with him.
Speaker 1 (01:09:49):
All Right, we're up against a break here, we'll come back.
We'll hear the rest of Dabosweeney's conversation about some of
the stuff at linebacker and much more right after this
stay with us Clemson Sports all at on with you.
On a Thursday afternoon, we were listening to some of
dabos when he's comments following Clips's spring game. He got
to try to give you that over the next few days,
just to help you out along the way. Anyway, he
(01:10:12):
was asked about Clips's linebackers, and he'd kind of given
us some of the answer before the break, but we
ran up against the hard time clock there, so we'll
jump back into his final portion of that response.
Speaker 7 (01:10:25):
You know, we got some of those guys that depth,
guys that will probably have to be core special teams
guys for us too.
Speaker 4 (01:10:31):
You know, we've got a kid named Roberto out there,
same thing.
Speaker 7 (01:10:34):
He's he's a kid that flashes, had some offers coming
out of high school. Wanted to kind of come in
here and give it a shot.
Speaker 4 (01:10:42):
You know.
Speaker 7 (01:10:42):
Griffin Batts another guy that's played some special teams for
so we kind of the back part of our backers.
It's a pretty good group and the Fletcher's a guy
that's kind of got up in there and competed with everybody. Sammy,
I think is taking a really good step forward.
Speaker 4 (01:10:57):
Obviously.
Speaker 7 (01:10:58):
You know, wood As is a guy we really believe in.
So the group has has made some strides, but the
same thing, they just gotta just gotta keep doing this
a big summer. Now, these guys have got to go
through all the installation again.
Speaker 4 (01:11:12):
They gotta they gotta go and get through all of
our skills and drills.
Speaker 7 (01:11:16):
That's where a lot of the growth comes. And then
just do a lot of the work on their own
and always tell them that that's you know, championships are
won and champions are made when nobody's watching.
Speaker 4 (01:11:27):
You know, what are you doing in private?
Speaker 7 (01:11:29):
You know, there's just a lot of work that everybody's
got to do individually and it'll be back great to
Row in August.
Speaker 4 (01:11:34):
But I'm pleased with the work we've got done.
Speaker 1 (01:11:38):
Dabo Sweeney was asked about Rangy defensive end Darien Mayo
and how he's done. I think this skid is like
six seven six eight, I mean he's huge.
Speaker 4 (01:11:46):
Yeah, he's gotten better and he's stronger.
Speaker 7 (01:11:49):
You know, he was you know obviously he's got great
uh measurables, but you know, kind of weak as water
and when he got here, just a big, long guy.
But he didn't he wasn't able to come till the summer.
So power hour was huge for him and it's really
paid off. I mean, he's he's just he's he's strong, strong.
Speaker 4 (01:12:09):
Error uh he's he's has a much better.
Speaker 7 (01:12:12):
Understanding of what you know, we're asking him to do,
and you know, just did what he needed to do.
You know, everybody's either got an arrow up they kind
of stayed the same or the arrows down and the
arrows up. You know, by Mayo, he and we didn't
have Ari, we didn't him have him out there this spring,
but we we know what we got really proud of
(01:12:33):
will help and and I think Johem has had a
good spring, and you know, I feel good. Denthoff was
having a good spring and he had injury that that
he had to deal with. Uh So I feel good
about the upper group. So we really forced the issue
with some of those younger guys, Marcus Dixon, Darien Mayo,
really challenging them.
Speaker 4 (01:12:54):
We got armand Mason back. He didn't get the whole spring,
but he got the last week or so.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
Aswooney was also asked if there was any defensive lineman,
because Grady Jarrett comes back for the spring game every year,
if there was any defensive lineman that maybe reminded him
of Grady Jarrett.
Speaker 4 (01:13:11):
Oh boy, I don't know about that. Uh, that's a.
Speaker 7 (01:13:15):
Grady is on the He's he's on He's He's kind
of one of one, uh, Grady Special.
Speaker 4 (01:13:21):
And you know, I sure hope so.
Speaker 7 (01:13:23):
Though, I hope we'll have some guys that have the
We got guys that have a lot better measurables than
Grady Jarrett. We got a bunch of them, you know,
we got a bunch of guys that look like they
need to be playing for the Bears. Grady don't look
that part. He don't look the part, but he plays it.
Speaker 4 (01:13:39):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (01:13:39):
You know, that's what's great about this game. You don't
always necessarily look the part, you know. But when you
they don't check your IDs on Friday nights, all right,
they don't care if you're fourteen or eighteen who can
play the game, and they don't check you combine uh,
you know, records, when you step on the field, and
that's just you know, Grady's just He's just a baller.
I mean when he gets on the field, he's six',
(01:14:00):
five you, know three ten and runs for.
Speaker 4 (01:14:04):
Six that's who he, Is that's how he, thinks that's
how he. Plays he's.
Speaker 7 (01:14:07):
Special he's. Just but what makes him special is what's.
Inside he's. Unique that guy's wired.
Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
Different sweeten was also asked about his thoughts on the
play Of clemson's offensive lineman and how they performed During
clemson spring game On. Saturday it was.
Speaker 7 (01:14:23):
Good you, know they had a couple of little, hiccups
but it's just good to See.
Speaker 4 (01:14:27):
Braiden jacob's out. THERE i, Mean, lord have, mercy he's
getting off the bus. First for.
Speaker 7 (01:14:31):
Sure he is a giant and he's out there and
you know he's having to go AGAINST tj and he's
going Against jahem and all these guys and really proud of.
HIM i, mean those guys have got Mean Mason Wade
easton where we got rowing, Bird Little gavin BLAIRT i
say little because he's he's small next To, Brayden but,
Man Gavin blanchard as a kid that's really done a
(01:14:51):
nice job this. Spring you know he's going to be
a good inside player for. Us he's, tough he's, competitive.
Speaker 4 (01:14:58):
But you know it's. GOOD i mean you can again
you can't quantify.
Speaker 7 (01:15:01):
That to throw them out there and to get the
reps that they've been able to get the spring is
going to really pay off for.
Speaker 4 (01:15:06):
Us.
Speaker 7 (01:15:07):
Uh saddler Wasn't saddler is you, know really. Good but
he wasn't able to go live this. Spring tristan wasn't
able to go live this. Spring we didn't Have Walker,
parks we didn't Have Watson, young we didn't Have Ian,
reid we didn't Have Ditrich. Paynton there was a lot
of guys and so but that freed up a bunch
of reps for those young. Guys AND i Mean Matt
luke just and he just he rode them like mules
(01:15:30):
and they're all they're all better because of.
Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
It swinging was also asked to kind of give a
observation of which side of the ball he really thought
one the, day regardless of the.
Speaker 4 (01:15:39):
SCORE i, mean there was the.
Speaker 7 (01:15:42):
SCORE i mean the offense won from a score, Standpoint
BUT i, THOUGHT i thought one real positive of the day,
Defensively first of, all they created three. Takeaways they had
SOME sax and, TFLs BUT i thought the first, crew
they didn't give up scores in the red.
Speaker 4 (01:15:55):
Zone they held them the field. Goals that was really
good to.
Speaker 7 (01:15:58):
See AND i think there was ONE i was either
first and goal on the one or two.
Speaker 4 (01:16:03):
And held in a field.
Speaker 7 (01:16:04):
Goal and and that's that's an area that we have
to be better at this, year is red zone defense
and just. Holding you, know WHEN i you, know when
you win on red zone, defense you you hold enough field,
goal that's a. Win you, know you either get a
stop on downs you turn them, over or you hold
enough field goal if they don't get a.
Speaker 4 (01:16:21):
Touchdown that's a. Win that's a. WIN i, mean people.
Speaker 7 (01:16:24):
Gonna make plays and got the ball will get. MOVED i,
mean you you just but you have to be able
to be and, honestly it should be the hardest place
to score because the field is. Small there's no threat
of running by, you, right it's a smaller, field and
and you know it's it's it's just we ought to.
Be we ought to be as good as anybody in the,
country and so we've worked really hard on that this.
(01:16:45):
Spring that was a real. Positive SO i thought there
was just a lot of good and again we mixed and,
matched got everybody the reps that we needed to get
all three, offenses all three, defenses AND i think we
everybody that was on the sideline eventually got in the,
GAME i. Believe so it was just a good productive
day and you, know fun to see him compete in
that type of.
Speaker 1 (01:17:06):
Environment they go a little bit Of Dabo sweeney From
clemson spring. GAME i, mean he talked for like thirty six.
Minutes we're gonna give you all over the over span of.
