(01:48):
Plumbing dot com. That's the website as well. All right,
So interesting developments yesterday in pitts Burg for the Clemson
Tiger baseball team. I don't know. Look, first and foremost,
(02:09):
you guys know this. You're a part of the show.
You've been a part of the show for a long time.
I do not get all like worked up about baseball
in general as a sport, like it's just never been
the thing that's gonna be my signature or calling card
in this business. I certainly watch it, but not to
(02:32):
the degree that some people that are you know, on
the radio that they do listen to it. I'll give
you example, Teddy Hefner watch it. Teddy Hefner, Tay's old
baseball guy. Teddy sees the game differently than I do.
But what we had happened yesterday for Clemson is one
(02:55):
of those occurrences in college baseball that certainly makes you go,
I wonder why you don't see that more? And first off,
it's a little bit twofold on where I'm going with this,
but why you do see it in professional baseball? Now,
last night against pitt Clemson pitched a no hitter, but
it was a combined no hitter, with three pitchers being
(03:19):
a part of the no no. Now. In addition to that, oddly,
Clemson gave up a run in this no hit game.
It was a six to one victory yesterday. We'll get
into the minutia of the game as Aiden Kannat, Joe Allen,
Lucas Malstead all combined for that no hitter. In Clemson's
(03:41):
win at Charles Costs Field, the Tigers took a one
to zero series lead. That series kicked off about an
hour ago up in Pittsburgh for Game two. The Tigers
are now thirty nine and fifteen sixteen and twelve in
the ACC. The Panthers are now twenty seven and twenty
four and ten and eighteen in the league. It mark
(04:04):
Clympson's fifteenth no hitter in history, and the first since
March eighteenth, two thousand and nine, when five Tigers combined
for a no hit win over USC Upstate fourteen to nothing.
And it was Clemson's fourth no hitter in an Atlantic
Coast Conference game and the first no hitter in a
(04:27):
conference game since April seventeenth, nineteen seventy six, when the
Tigers no hit Virginia nine nothing at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
But the thing that you don't see a whole lot of,
for whatever reason, in college baseball is the solo pitcher
(04:49):
no hitter, right, Like I said, Clemson had a combined
no hitter the last time they have won, it was
five pitchers. And what I and look, you don't see
see no hitters all that often anyway in sports, but
whether that's college or professional baseball. But I am surprised
(05:14):
that you don't hear more about it when it happens
in college sports. Now, how many no hitters are pitched
a year collegiately. It's a great question, and there's you know,
there's obviously no perfect answer to that, But I think
my bigger question is the why, Like why does it
(05:36):
feel like? And maybe it's because of the arms, you know,
college coaches trying to protect the arms of these young
guys playing baseball. But I guess the big question is
why aren't there more single pitcher no hitters in college baseball? Now?
From what I can find, I believe North Carolina, U
(05:59):
and l and Tennessee all had no hitters this season,
but they were all combined no hitters. And so I
do wonder, like, is it just about the pitching and
about the you know, the lack of a willingness to
(06:22):
stretch these guys past a certain pitch count number. And furthermore,
I would beg the question to you as a fan
of the game. As cool as it is to have
a combined no hitter, would you prefer would you prefer
(06:44):
to have a guy like Aiden Kannak who had twelve
strikeouts and seven and the third innings pitched, Would you
prefer that he go ahead and finish the ballgame? Now?
Cannot did allow a run along with four walks in
(07:07):
the game. As for Allen, he pitched one in the
third innings and Mossty recorded the final out of the game.
The Panther starting pitcher Patrick Gardner suffered the loss. He
gave up eight hits, four runs, and one walk with
seven strikeouts in six innings pitched. Cam Canerel extended his
(07:31):
hitting streak to thirteen games with a single in the
third inning, and the Tiger scored a run on Luke
Gapney's fielder's choice. In the fourth inning, it was Andrew
Chuffo who grounded a two out double to score run.
Then Clemson had two runs in the sixth inning, highlighted
by a Jacob Jarroll leadoff home run, his twelfth of
(07:53):
the year. Jerrold also had a career high four hits
in the ballame just what the doctor ordered there for
Clemson offensively, and Jaron Purifi led off the eighth inning
with just his fifth home run of the season, and
Colin Priest reached on an infield single to score run.
Later in the frame. The Panthers scored their first run
(08:17):
on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Here's Clemson
head coach Eric Backetch following the combined no hitter performance
up at.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Pit well, talk about just what the doctor ordered. You know,
Elite pitching covers up a lot of things, and we
had not just elite pitching, we had an outlier unicorn
Austin performance and just what this team needed at this time.
But it was a special magical just a fifteenth no
hitter in school history, first since two thousand and nine.
(08:51):
And the great cameraman filming right now. Brian Hennessy, number
one ranked SID in the country, just said, it's the
first acc no hitter since would you say nineteen seventy six,
So awesome night. Huge tip of the cap to Aiden
Knock and Joe Allen and Lucas mal said for combining
for that.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Just a great way to set the tone and great way.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
To be one to zero to start the series. A
lot of work to be done left in the series,
but part for this whole team to be part of
a historic night is very special and just certainly very
proud of aiding Kannock and the entire pitching staff. Really
so awesome night tis night and just great, great thing
(09:34):
to celebrate. Go Tigers.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
That's airy back at following Clemson's no hit victory against
Pitt And if you're you know, a kid in the
back of the car riding along with your parent, and
you hear it was a no hit game, a no
hitter that Clemson threw, and the final score was six
to one, and you're wondering how that happened. You know,
(09:58):
balls hit pitches, I mean hit batters, et cetera. But
the more important thing or a wild pitch, the more
important thing. The lesson that I think you can really
learn is if you're asking yourself, is it possible to
throw a no hitter and lose? It is I don't
(10:18):
know about a perfect game. I would think not. But
but I think does MLB Baseball start with a runner
on second now in extra innings? Let's see, because if
(10:41):
that's the case, Yeah, regular season games begin with a
runner on second base. So theoretically, right, you could have
a runner on second that did not earned the bag,
(11:02):
and you could have two wild pitches and he could score.
He could go from second to third on the first
wild pitch and from third to home, and then you
could get out of that inning. And then when your
team comes up to bat, they don't score and you
get beat one nothing. Right, So I don't think prior
to that you could lose a perfect game, but I
(11:23):
think now you can. I think now you can. And
I was looking back at, you know, major League baseball
in the history of the game, and one of the
things I stumbled upon was a guy who pitched twelve
(11:44):
innings of perfect baseball. In nineteen fifty nine, a guy
named Harvey Haddocks became the only man to take a
perfect a perfect game in the extra innings, and he
ended up retiring thirty six consecutive batters, going up against
one of the top offenses in the country. Back then,
(12:04):
with the Milwaukee Braves, they had Hank Aaron. Who else
was on that fifty nine Braves team? Man, I'd have
to think some other great players, though I mentioned Teddy Hefner,
earlier I mentioned Teddy Hefner earlier, Teddy Hefner is probably
(12:27):
going Swanne Teddy Matthews, and he'd be right. Yeah, Eddie
Matthews was the name I couldn't think of who I
think led the Major league in home runs that season.
And Hank Aaron I believe finished third. But Haddocks, Harvey
Haddocks pitched twelve perfect innings of baseball. No other player
(12:48):
I don't believe any other players ever gone twelve deep
into a ballgame with perfection at the major leagues. Even
still Haddicks back in fifty nine, but obviously ends up
losing that ball game. Nonetheless, let's head back to the
ballpark up in Pittsburgh and here from Aiden Knock and
(13:12):
some of the other players after Clemson's no hitter six
to one victory at pitt last night, I was standing,
performance is.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
A whole pitching staff.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
You know, Joe came in when there is adversity shown,
you know, picked me up. And then you know Joe Bason,
Versy and Studdy picked him up. So just all together,
great pitching staff and not ptship Jack and Gerald Hide
the dish picked it all halfway.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
So yeah, I'm really proud of this win. That was
Aid Kanna talking about Clemson's victory, and again up in
Pittsburgh today, the Tigers got a run on the board
in the top half of the first inning to take
an early one to oh lead with Drew Titsworth on
the bump for Clemson. So we'll continue to keep you
(13:55):
updated on that game as best we can. The Tigers
needing to put together a good weekend of baseball before
the ACC Tournament. You know, obviously this team has been
at the top of the mark for a lot of
the season, but they've recently hit just a little tough
stretch and it's one of those things that you know,
(14:17):
when we talked with Timberrey. As a matter of fact,
speaking to Timbray, he was on with us yesterday in
our number one. We are going to reset that in
our number two, and we'll let you hear some more
from timber Ray if you weren't here with us in
our one yesterday, because it was a great conversation about
(14:38):
Clemson and Notre Dame and that matchup being renewed. I've
actually got to hit the road man, big game for
my son's girlfriend and the River Bluff Gator women's soccer
team as they are playing at jl Man in the
Upper State Championship. River Bluff's girls do not have a
(15:00):
state title.
Speaker 6 (15:02):
Now.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
It's a short lived history obviously for the school only
being an open since twenty thirteen, twelve seasons. But they've
got a great chance. I really do feel like they've
got a great chance, especially if they can win tonight.
They knocked off number one seeded Blythewood earlier this week
and now they'll travel up to jl Man for the
(15:25):
Upper State Championship. They're actually led by one of the
girls that I went to high school with. Her daughter,
daughter's plural form play for him, Anna Allen and Eden
Allen and then another girl named Noemmi Williams playing really
(15:47):
good ball here in the postseason as they look to
advance to the state championship. So we'll see how it
all shakes out. I mean, it was a lot of
fun the keeper. I will say this. In that Blithewood game,
Blythewood went up one nothing, River Bluff equalized. In the playoffs,
you play to ten minute over times, then to five
minute golden goal overtime periods, which quite frankly, I think
(16:11):
I'd prefer just to play to fifteen minute Golden goal
and call of the Day. But either way, taking a
look at what happened in that PK shootout, we were
down and Blythewood had to make and they win the game.
(16:33):
And Julia Sail the keeper, I mean, she made an
unbelievable play, unbelievable play to make a save in the
top shelf and that allowed River Bluff to win the
ballgame because that kept the match tied. That allowed River
(16:57):
Bluff to win the ball game. The next girl for
River Bluff went up and made it, and then the
girl from Blathwood missed. So big game coming up tonight.
We're gonna be heading up the road to go check
that out. So we're gonna reset timber Ray for you
no hour number two plus. I'm telling you o spectacular.
I mean, if you missed it, you're gonna love it.
If you heard it, you're gonna still like it. You'll
probably pick up something else you didn't hear. And I
(17:19):
did reach out to Will Vandervoort about possibly coming on
the show today, but I know with the Clemson baseball
game taking place in the middle of today's program, that
might be a little bit tricky for Will as he
for all I know. Heck, he could be in Pittsburgh
for that matter. As Clemson jumped out to an early
(17:39):
five nothing lead off of jer and Purify home run
in the top of the second inning, Clemson exploded for
five quick runs, sending sending the well four runs in
that inning, but sending the Pittsburgh Panthers to the bullpen early.
(17:59):
As Clemson looks to win that series and bounce back
and kind of get back to playing the way they
were playing earlier this season. You know, like I said,
outside of the hitting streak that Camp Canderellas pieced together,
I mean, outside of that, you know, this Clemson baseball
(18:22):
team has really struggled offensively, and quite frankly, I think
it was Quawk who maybe said it on Monday. You know,
even when even when Clemson scores five, they're unable to
keep a team from score nine, and it's just like
(18:43):
come on, and then they'll play other games where it's
two to one and they just aren't scoring enough. So like,
get I get it, I get it. I still think
this team's got a lot of good baseball left in them.
I know, obviously the past few weeks have left a
lot to be desired for the clembon some faithful But
we'll take a look when we get back at some
(19:05):
of the postseason baseball projections, just to give you an
idea of where they're kind of slating Clemson right now.
I know that's something around this time of the year
everybody likes to follow. So we'll give you an idea
of how the field of sixty four projects for the
(19:27):
NCAA Baseball Tournament and whether or not Clemson will be
hosting a regional, are they in line for a national
seed and a super regional? And is there enough meat
left on the bone to even climb back into that conversation.
I mean, there's a whole lot we can get to
here on a Friday afternoon to get ahead a quick break,
(19:48):
we'll come back with more. You're listening to Clemson Sports
Talk right here Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred and of
course heard around the world on the iHeartRadio application Clemson
Sports on a Friday afternoon, Lawton Swan hanging out with
you eight oh three four five zero zero eighty six
text line, phone line. Be a part of the show anytime,
(20:10):
any place, anywhere on our website, Clemson Sports dot com.
So before the break, I was talking about Clemson and
whether you know the projections for the field of sixty
four for the NCAA tournament. Obviously, this is a team
that climbed all the way up to number two in
(20:31):
the country and then hit a couple of tough series,
looking to bounce back in this contest against Pitt, or
in this series against Pitt this weekend, got a little
no no in the opener a combined no hitter in
a six to one win and jumped out to an
(20:51):
early five zero advantage through two innings of play, or
into the bottom the second inning of play, I should say,
after Clempson's first two at bats courtesy of a jam
Purify three run bomb that just went over the glove
of the right fielder for the Pitt Panthers, giving Clemson
(21:13):
a five to zero lead in that game. But looking
around the country and kind of where things sit as
we speak, here's the way it all appears to shake out.
And I'll give you the cross matchup as well. Right
so the number one overall seed right now would be Texas.
(21:37):
In their region would be second seed Dallas Baptist, third
seed U t Rio Grand Valley, and number four would
be Oral Roberts. So a little Texas two step there,
if you will, maybe call it the Texas four step
with all those teams involved out in Austin. Now that
(21:58):
number one region is paired up with the six sixteenth
seeded West Virginia Mountaineers. The second seed in that region
would be the reigning champions College Baseball Tennessee, third seed
of Virginia, and for seed would be Holy Cross. Now
the second overall seed in the tournament would be LSU.
At this point in the Baton Rouge Regional, you've got
(22:20):
second seeded Miami, third seeded Southeast Louisiana, and four seed
A Bryant. That region would be paired up with fifteenth
seeded the NC State, along with second seed Florida, third
seed Connecticut, and forurth seed High Point. The third overall
seed in the NCAA tournament right now, according to D
one Baseball, would be Arkansas, paired up with in their
(22:42):
Fayetteville Regional second seed Kansas, third seed Western Kentucky, and
for Sea right State, that region is paired up with Tuscaloosa,
where fourteen seeded Alabama would be a pair its second
seed Southern miss third seed Arizona State and four seeded
(23:03):
Missouri State. The Florida State Seminoles would receive the fourth
seed in the NCAA Tournament and in their region down
in Tallahassee, it will be the second seed, would be
north West Northeastern third seed Mississippi State for seed, but
then Cookman that region will be paired up with TCU's region,
which is TCU will be the thirteenth overall seed out
(23:26):
in Fort Worth, with UT San Antonio, third seed Oklahoma,
and four sea Kent State. In Nashville, Vanderbilt will be
the fifth overall seed with Louisville East, Tennessee State and
Tennessee Tech coming in and then the twelfth overall SEA
would be Oregon State, with Kentucky, Southern cal and Sacramento
State being the fourth seed in that region. Athens, Georgia,
(23:51):
according to this, would receive the sixth overall seed the
Bulldogs with Georgia Tech, Stenson and Rhode Island and UCLA
would the Los Angeles Regional U se Irvine Arizona in
San Diego State, Auburn set up for one of the
national seeds at number seven along with Duke Troy and Fairfield,
and then Coastal Carolina would be the tenth seed, paired
(24:11):
up with that Auburn Regional with Clemson being the second
seed in that region along with Cincinnati and Yale. And
then the Chapel Hill Regional that's the number eight seeded
tar Heels with Old miss Iowa and Central Connecticut, paired
up with the Oregon Regional with Wake Forest, Kansas State,
and Nevada. So still at this point, Clemson not not
(24:34):
determined to be one of the top sixteen seeds in
the country. Again, they're currently number fifteen in the baseball rankings,
but were ranked as high as number two just a
couple of weeks ago and would have clearly been one
of those national seeds a few weeks back. But now
(24:54):
the Tigers just got to do work not only in
the remaining games in the regular season, but also in
the postseason at the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament up in
Charlotte as we get ready for that to get underway.
Eight zero three four or five zero zero zero eighty six.
That's the text line and the phone line. And again,
(25:16):
you can be a part of the program anytime, any place,
anywhere on our website Clemson sports Talk dot com. But yeah, amazing,
you know, how quickly Clemson has kind of fallen off
of the national map in terms of even the chance
to host a regional at this point. What a slide
(25:39):
this group has been on. It's not and again, it's
been some good competition. It's been some really good competition.
I mean, Florida State, n C State, nothing wrong you
know with those teams. But I think losing two out
of three to Duke and then the way things have
played out since mid April, over the past month or so,
(26:02):
I think it's probably the biggest bugaboo in terms of
Clemson's resume. It's not one bad series. That's not that's
not fair. I say, it's not one bad loss. It's
a combined effort, you know, over these past few games
where Clemson's really struggled. The good news is, though there's
(26:27):
still baseball left to be played, and if you go
out given the kind of resume of the Atlantic Coast Conference,
it's like playing in the SEC in the sense that
there will be a chance to earn some real you know,
positive support, a real boost to your resume once you
(26:50):
get into postseason play in the Atlantic Coast Conference. So
that's that's a benefit all right, Will Van Dervoart, we'll
bring Will on the program in our number two of
the show. Just talked to him a few minutes ago.
He sent us a text and said, yeah, he's good,
So we'll line up with Willy V when we come back.
We talked about where Clemson's ranked right now nationally, again
(27:14):
being on the outside of hosting a regional that they
travel over to Coastal, a team they lost to just
a few days back. But we'll give you the rundown
of what the Atlantic Coast Conference currently looks like as
we enter another evening of conference baseball with the Tigers
up at pitt At last check, stay with us, Lawton
(27:34):
Swan with you Clemson's sports on a Friday. Don't forget
if you're in Tigertown to stop buy our friends over

officially licensed Clemson apparel and shop where Tiger fans shop
at Alumni Hall, downtown Clemson, right there across just a
(28:18):
stone's throw, as I like to say, from Riggs Field.
All right, So watching this Clemson pit baseball game today,
and it is something that I've noticed quite a bit.
And we'll talk with Will Van Dervoort about this in
our number two. But when did win Did I know
(28:39):
baseball went analytical a few years ago where everything was
broken down and you know, you had the all the
shifts and everything, and Major League Baseball and all that
finally had to fix it because the game was getting
a little bit boring to watch. It was frustrating to
watch as well. But one of the things I noticed
(29:01):
with Clemson, and you've noticed it too, the big almost
looks like a cowboy belt that these guys wear, and
they've got all kind of like information about players and stuff.
I saw Jared Purify I mentioned pure if I hitting
this three run homer in the second inning, I think
it was the bottom half of the second inning, there
was one point he had made a play in the outfield,
(29:22):
and then the next batter comes up for Pitt and
you know, Purify has got this a little like cheat
sheet I think you call it that he pulls out
of his back pocket and he's looking at it to see,
you know, I guess what this player's tendencies are or whatever.
Like my question is, with that being the case, with
(29:49):
you know, those little cheat sheets and all being a
part of it, when did that become a thing? Like
when did that really become a thing. Like the sliding glove,
you know, has been around for a few seasons. I
guess there's a limit on the length of the sliding glove,
(30:09):
like it seems to me, you know, if I had
the sliding glove there was about six feet long, I
could probably steal a lot of bases. But I'm sure
there's a link that the sliding glove can be. But
when did the analytics start getting where players are pulling
out a little sheet of paper and reading Because I
remember taking the test in college where my professor was like, look,
you can bring in one note card, one note card
(30:34):
front and back with notes on it. I type that
thing in about five font and I had so many
notes on that note card. Heck, I struggled to finish
the test because I had so much put together either way.
Either way, to me, it's so unique to see baseball
(30:58):
shifting to this point where you're starting to see that
because I don't remember that from being a kid. I
really think this is a new phenomenon. We can dive
into that in a little bit, but talking about the
Atlantic Coast Conference standings as baseball games are being played
this week, North Carolina State right now is the top
(31:18):
team in the Atlantic Coast Conference at seventeen and nine.
They are thirty three and sixteen overall. Georgia Tech is
actually number two in the conference at eighteen and ten.
They are thirty eight and fifteen on the season overall.
Florida State currently is third. They are sixteen and nine
in thirty six and twelve overall, North Carolina seventeen and ten,
(31:42):
thirty eight and eleven. Virginia is fifteen and ten, thirty
one and sixteen, and then your Clempson Tigers are currently
tied for six with the Duke Blue Devils sixteen and twelve.
Both teams are Colympson is thirty nine and fifteen and
Duke is thirty five and seventeen. Then you've got Wake
Forest at fifteen and thirteen. They're thirty five and eighteen overall,
(32:04):
Miami at fourteen and thirteen, they're thirty and twenty two overall.
In Louisville at fourteen and fourteen, five hundred in the
conference in thirty four and nineteen overall, and then Notre
Dame is thirteen and fifteen and thirty one and nineteen overall.
I mean, it's a tight race in the Atlantic Coast
(32:25):
Conference right now. I mean, if you're Clemson, you need
these two wins because eighteen and twelve, eighteen and twelve
in this conference right now would be a pretty good result.
I mean, not where you wanted it to be a
few weeks ago. But that's what you guys, that's what
(32:49):
you gotta do, man, especially since Duke holds the tiebreaker
against you winning their series two games won last week.
That series against Duke last week was a tough one
as for Clemson, Pitt just as we were getting ready
to go on the air right at four o'clock, just
before that, probably a round three point fifty, that game
(33:12):
went into a rain delay, and the storm that came
through looked like your torrential downpour that you get in
the summer. I mean it was raining, you know, raining
cats and dogs, that's what it was doing. And so
we'll see when they'll get back out for a reset
there at pitt with Clemson up five to nothing in
(33:36):
the third inning. But man, last weekend series against Duke,
that's a huge one because if you look at it
right now, right if you if you sweep Duke, you're
eighteen and ten. Eighteen and ten is currently second in
(33:56):
the league and just a game off of being the
top team in the conference. I mean, if Florida State
and NC State both lose another game in conference play,
think about this for a second, there will not be
(34:16):
a team in the league that has less than ten losses.
How about that in conference play? Not overall ten losses
in conference play. If those two teams lose, that's that's
pretty wild. Now in C State's take it on Stanford,
(34:40):
So I'm not so sure that the wolf Pack will lose.
And Florida State is facing North Carolina, which would seem
to be perhaps the more difficult of the two contests
that both teams have remaining. But if they both lose
a game of their remaining two in conference. Every team
(35:00):
in the conference will have ten losses or more. That's
wild parody in my opinion. Final segment of hour one
coming up. Right around the band Stay with us. Final
segment of hour number one coming up. Will van der
Voort will join the program. In hour two. We'll also
hear some of our interview with Tim Beray from yesterday
as we talked about Clemson and Notre Dame. Also the
(35:22):
Tigers and the pitt Panthers went into a rain delay
around three point fifty with Clemson up five to nothing
in the third inning, but they were scheduled to get
back underway pretty quickly, so shouldn't be much of a
delay for anybody that's wondering what's going on there. But
(35:43):
top of the third inning they had to actually stop
in the middle of the inning, which is rare. They
tried not to do that if they can avoid it,
but due to inclement weather, no outs and a two
to one count to the leadoff battler Josh Paino as
leeds five nothing in the top of the third or
(36:03):
lead five to nothing in the top of the third
when that game was halted just a little bit ago.
All right, So we've talked an awful lot here about
the excitement around Clemson and the belief of how good
this Clemson Tiger football team could be this year, and
(36:26):
that is going to be a prevailing theme in the
world of college football. And I don't think that it's
gonna cool off between now and the fall. But College
Sports Network put out their mock draft and Kate Clubnet
(36:55):
once again projected as the number one overall pick in
this mon draft. Lenor Sellers was mocked that sounded like
a mocking was mock drafted as number two to the
New York Jets. Garrett Nussmeyer in this mock draft went
(37:16):
number three to the New Orleans Saints, meaning number one
and number three would be facing off in the opener
in Death Valley. Number four off of the board TJ.
Parker to the Tennessee Titans, so two Tigers taken in
the top four according to this mock draft. The Tigers
(37:38):
also had Peter Woods drafted ninth to the Las Vegas Raiders,
making the defensive tackle the third overall selection of a
Clemson player in this mock draft. And then just a
few picks later, Avion Terrell comes off the board at
(37:59):
number thirteen, I mean, that's wild. You add to that
Antonio Williams being mock drafted at number twenty, and you're
talking about five Clemson players being drafted in the top
twenty picks of the upcoming NFL draft, and that in
(38:26):
and of itself might be reason for all of the
hubbub for lack of a better word, around Clemson and
the hopes or the expectations for a run to the
College Football Playoff and maybe even challenging for a national championship.
(38:47):
I mean that, my friends, is quite the number five
out of twenty five out of twenty So either way,
it'll be interesting to see how this coming football season
(39:11):
shakes out. I know a lot of people are fired
up about it, for sure, But all that being said,
Clemson is not getting shortchanged in the hype department nationally
for this season, for the draft. I mean, the belief
(39:33):
is that the Tigers are going to be one of
the top teams in the country next season. Now. I
also saw a graphic speaking of college football that talked
about the college football team's best postseason accomplishments in the
college Football Playoff era since twenty fourteen. College Football Kings
(39:59):
put it out there the teams that have won multiple
national championships Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State teams who
have won a national championship, Michigan and LSU teams who
have won a College Football Playoff game. You add in
Notre Dame, TCU, Washington, Penn State, Texas and Oregon teams
(40:26):
that have made the College Football Playoff. You had Florida State,
Michigan State, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, SMU, Arizona State, Boise State, Tennessee
and Indiana. Teams who have won a New Year's Six
Bowl since twenty fourteen, Georgia Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Florida,
(40:50):
Iowa State, Wisconsin, Stanford, Southern cal A and m Ole,
miss Missouri, UCF, Houston and Tulane. And teams who have
won a conference title since twenty fourteen pitt Kansas State, Utah,
(41:12):
app State, Memphis, Northern Illinois, Ohio, UAB, Texas, San Antonio, Florida, Atlantic,
San Jose State, Arkansas State, San Diego State, Tulane, Wyoming, Liberty, Western, Kentucky, Army, Louisiana, Lafayette, Troy, Toledo, Marshall,
(41:48):
Jacksonville State, Georgia, Southern Bowling Green Fresno State, Utah State,
Miami of Ohio, and a cardinal I can't identify. I'm
not sure who that is, but either way, I hate
to say it to our fine feathered friends peeking over
the fence, so you could.
Speaker 4 (42:08):
Continue to peek over the fence at the best radio
for showing the naked.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
I read a lot of names, but I didn't read
South Carolina's gut punch quick break. We'll come back. We'll
hear from timber Ray. Right after this, it's time.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
For Clipson Sports Talk with Luwton Swanny.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
It is our number two that's drivetime writer on the
show that shakes the south Land, Clemson Sports Talt Long
Swine with you on a Friday afternoon. All right, yesterday
and hour one we talked with Timbray, so some of
you missed it obviously. Here an hour two we're gonna
jump into that as I got to hit the road
this afternoon, and it's a spectacular interview with Tim and
(43:27):
again hour number two of the show, brought to you
in part by our good friends over at METS Plumbing.
Seven three two drip, drip, drip drip. You know the
jingle seven three two drip that's Mets Plumbing mets plumbing
dot com. All right, here's our interview with timber Ray
from yesterday afternoon. Tim, welcome in.
Speaker 6 (43:44):
Good to be with you a lot, now are you?
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Yeah? One week away and man, the whole world changes.
We got an American pope, we got Clemson a Notre Dame.
What what's happening?
Speaker 7 (43:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (43:55):
How about that? Yeah, I've uh, I've gotten accused of
uh broke during that deal. I'm all in favor of it,
but I didn't did not that was nearly between the
two athletic directors. But I think it's a good, good
contract for both schools.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
I was gonna say, which one the Clipson, Notre Dame
dealer the American pope. Which one is that you broke?
Speaker 6 (44:16):
Well? I think clumps to Notre Dame. But yeah, I'm
certainly in favor of having an American pope. And it
is kind of interesting to have a pope that you
understand every time he talks. He obviously is a sports fan.
He fox Dug got that picture of him at a
at a World Series game in two thousand and five.
So yeah, it's gonna be gonna be interesting.
Speaker 2 (44:41):
Follow tick.
Speaker 6 (44:42):
Often he comes over to the United States. He was
supposed to come in August for three weeks to see
his brother, but that may be changed. He may have
a different schedule though.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
You can follow them on Twitter at Tim Bray. He
joins us on Thursdays to talk a little college football, basketball, baseball.
This week, even a little off ball. But let's begin
with that deal with Clemson and Notre Dame. You know,
these two schools have played only eight times historically. They'll
play twelve consecutive games, assuming that the college football landscape
doesn't shift so much that those games get canceled or
(45:15):
changed at some point along the way. But from the
standpoint of the new deal that the Atlantic Coast Conference
put up in talking about eyeballs, you know, in viewership
and ratings, Tim, this is a huge win for Clemson.
Give us your thoughts on why the Tigers made the move,
and then after that, I want to hear your thoughts
on Notre Dame's thoughts on penciling getting Clemson for twelve
(45:36):
consecutive years.
Speaker 6 (45:37):
Well, it certainly seems to be out there that the
SEC is going to go to nine nine conference games
coming up. And you know, you've seen stories with Sankee
and the Big Ten commissioner that they want to work
out a non conference game a year between schools and
(45:59):
the sec SEE and the Big Ten. I don't know
how much there is involved in that, but the bottom
line is it's going to be a lot tougher for
Clemson to schedule that second game each year against a
good power for conference school. I still think we're going
to play South Carolina every year, but those games that
(46:22):
we have like this year against LSU and then we
got four game scheduled with Georgia down the road too
with Oklahoma, I'm just afraid those games are going to
go away and and and so obviously Dabbo wants to
keep playing a real big time non conference game against
the powerful opponent outside of the South Carolina game, which
(46:45):
is always going to be big, and so, you know,
so for Clemson, Notre Dame was a perfect fit get
a home and home series, you know with them, and
from a Notre Dame standpoint, they also could have some
schedule doing difficulties. There was an interview at the end
of last year with the Southern Cal a d that
(47:08):
you know, gave you the impression that the Notre Dame
Southern Cal game may uh may go away at least
on an every every year basis, because Southern cal is
already coming east, you know, for probably four times a
year at least three uh in over multiple time zones
and so uh and then any games with Big ten schools,
(47:31):
uh could be You're probably going to be up in
the air for Notre Dame. So I think it was
good for both schools from a scheduling standpoint, and as
you said, I think it's it's good for Clemson because
of the uh, you know, financial situation that looks like
it's gonna come to fruition of the hasty sweet schools
that if you uh, you know, hire your ratings, the
(47:53):
more money you're gonna get into the conference distribution.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
Tim Bray with us here on the program. So from
the standpoint of Clemson and playing a team twelve consecutive
years outside of South Carolina in that long streak and
a run against Georgia in the you know, early eighties,
how many other schools, I mean, name schools, I guess
i'd say, Tim is has Clipson ever done anything like
(48:19):
this outside of with South Carolina and Georgia where you've
been this consistent with playing an opponent that's not in
your conference.
Speaker 6 (48:28):
Yeah, the only other one really is Georgia Tech. Before
Georgia Tech joined the ACC, and we really they really
didn't join the league. Well, they they joined the league
at seventy nine, but they didn't start playing in football
games to come for the conference championship till nineteen eighty three,
so they had all those consecutive years that of course,
(48:50):
you know, that was a kind of a moneymaker situation,
right for Clemson was one sided for years. Clemson just
went to think from nineteen forty five to nineteen seventy four,
Clemson always went to Atlanta and Georgia Tech didn't come
to Clemson until nineteen seventy four, so that wasn't actually
a balanced situation. But yeah, as far as home and
(49:12):
home goes to really Georgia and South Carolina. So this
is kind of a landmark deal there. And even for
Notre Dame, which of course has nothing but non conference series,
they haven't agreed to a new contract with the school
since they started i think an eighteen year eighteen years
in a row playing Michigan in two thousand and two,
(49:36):
so really it's only the second series of this length
for Notre Dame with a new series in the last
twenty years, and.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
Of course Commissioner Jim Phillips saying that this matchup when
it's you know, for Notre Dame, will not be considered
one of the Atlantic Coast Conference games, which means there
will be and there have been in the past some
years where I think they've played like six games against
the league, but Clemson will not be considered as one
of those.
Speaker 6 (50:03):
Well, I will I will interruptions and say that I'm
not sure whether he meant the seven new games or
all twelve of those.
Speaker 2 (50:13):
Oh good point.
Speaker 6 (50:14):
I got a feeling the five that were already scheduled
are still going to count. I'm just not sure about
the seven seven new ones.
Speaker 2 (50:23):
Well, and I don't you know, maybe not because I
would think he would want the league to capitalize on
Notre Dame. I don't know, but you make a good point.
I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Speaker 6 (50:35):
And the other thing that's up in the air too
is Stanford. I mean, Notre Ame isn't playing Stanford just
about every every year, And so my people, my friends
at Stanford tell me they really don't want to play
Notre Dame every year because they're you know, that would
mean you know, they're already coming east four times a year. Uh,
(50:58):
and so Notre Dame would be a fifth one. I
think I think they want to spread that out a
little bit. And maybe I've heard Stanford wants to play
Notre Dame the five out of twelve years like the
other schools.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
So we'll see Tim Bray with us here on the
program today talking about Clempson football. The other news we
got this week tim Clempson in LSU. It'll be a
night game under the lights to kick off the season.
And I know these rankings are merely just on paper
right now, but it's not just ESPN saying they think
Clyps is, you know, number two preseason. There's a lot
(51:31):
of post spring projections about how good this team will be. First,
let's talk about that seven o'clock kickoff in Death Valley
against LSU and what that environment could potentially be like
in your mind.
Speaker 6 (51:43):
Yeah, of course, one of the best environments I can
remember is the twenty thirteen game against Georgia, which was
you know, national television and it was a night game,
and that was a great game of thirty eight to
thirty five game that that Clemson won and gosh Boyd
and Sammy Watkins that great, great game. So yeah, that
(52:07):
was that was a great atmosphere and there's no doubt
that there will be the same thing for when when
Clemson plays LSU. So and not to mention the fact
that it will be the first game in Death Valley
where beer is sold and it just happens to be
against the school in the South that probably will sell
(52:27):
more beer than any other school that comes to Glimpston.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
Ever, did not, I did not, you know, I didn't
consider the under the lights and beer with LSU rolling
in from the buy you to take on the Tigers.
And when it comes down to that Death Valley Moniker
in this series with these two teams facing off, I mean,
(52:52):
how how significant do you think that conversation from the
national media will be? I mean, is it still a
big deal in your mind? Who's the original or Who's
Death Valley? I mean, is that a thing? Is because
I can remember talking about for years before it was scheduled, like, man,
I wish we'd play him for the right to use
the name.
Speaker 6 (53:09):
Yeah, well I'm sure, Well I've never really done. The
total deep dive is to win LSU first started calling
it their death Valley. It's pretty well documented that Clemson
first started calling it that in nineteen forty eight because
the Presbyterian coach referred to it in some preseason articles,
(53:34):
and then when coach Howard heard him say that, he
always referred to it as death Valley. So pretty much
started in nineteen forty eight around here. Now when it
started at LSU, I'm not sure, but I'm sure there'll
be a bunch of media who'll do a deep dive
into old newspapers and see where the reference started.
Speaker 2 (53:52):
Tim Burray well us on the program Final thing on football,
Tim I mentioned the post spring expectations, the preseason conversations
about this team. Kay Klubnick was tapped his Heisman favorite.
You know, when is the last time you feel like
this Clemson team? Because I kind of get the vibe
that everybody's trying to temper the expectations a little bit
(54:15):
right now and say, wait a second, this is just
this preseason. This is not you know, this is not
on the field, We're not you know, that was when
you will tell you it's not played on paper. But
when's the last time you feel like there was this
must this much buzz around this Clemson Tiger team heading
into the summer.
Speaker 6 (54:34):
Well, not that long ago. I think twenty sixteen when
we made the run of the championship game against Alabama,
only lost by five points, and you know, even even
Nick Saban said after the game that he had to
go with that onside cap because they just couldn't stop Clemson.
I mean, we lost that game, but certainly he had
(54:54):
had a lot of positive publicity from it, and plus
we had to show and watch him returning, you know,
for another season. I remember just being flooded with calls
all summer about preseason. People wanted to do preseason interviews
with the Shawn and he was pretty much Heisman favorite
at this time before the twenty sixteen season. So yeah,
(55:17):
I'd say two thousand and six. You know, twenty eighteen,
we had that great season. You know, we were coming
off a terrific here in twenty seventeen. But there was
almost a quarterback controversy because that Trevor Lawrence had so
much attention and even though Kelly Brown was a returning starter,
(55:39):
there was just a lot of talk about that. In
the course, what ended up happening that everybody talked about
in the preseason, became true when Trevor became the starting
quarterback by the fifteen.
Speaker 2 (55:51):
Tim Bray on Twitter at tim Beray. So this past
weekend was also a milestone moment for the Clemson softball program.
They finished at the top of the ACC in the
regular season before, but after a three and six start
to the year, and I'm not gonna say I wrote
him off, Tim on the program, but I certainly wondered
(56:12):
if the post Valerie kgle era was going to be
as good as what it was while she was there.
They stunned everybody, go and win the you know what,
they were forty one and six in their final forty
seven games and win the ACC Tournament, an incredible comeback
against Virginia Tech and then the late game heroics against
(56:33):
Florida State. You and I have talked about John Ripman
in the past, Tim, Where do you think this kind
of ranks for him? I certainly know where it ranks
for Clemson. But man, what a season, what a turnaround
for them?
Speaker 6 (56:47):
Yeah, without a doubt, course, I think it took two
Stanford teams to the College World Series, so he's had
great success before, but you know, it was the way
it was done. And it's kind of you know, it's
kind of interesting when I would say it's a streak
that Clemson hadn't won the ACC championship. But let's look
at it as as a first and you know, so
(57:08):
many times when things like this happened, they do happen
in dramatic fashion, you know, when you looked at Clemson
won the national championship in football in twenty sixteen for
the first time in thirty five years. But we didn't
just win it twenty one to fourteen and run the clockout. No,
we scored with one second to go to you know,
(57:30):
to to win the game. When we finally ended the
streak in Chapel Hill, you know, it wasn't just a
normal six or seven point game. And then we won
the game in overtime, and it was it's a remarkable
comeback in the in the the second half, and in
this softball win, we were trailing going into the sixth
inning and all three games and one of which, of course,
(57:53):
we scored seven runs in the last bat to win
the game. So it certainly it was a dramatic way
to get that first one. One You'll always remember the
remember the first one and one other I always said
to talk about is when the Clempson golf team won
in two thousand and three. We had to We won
the tournament on Oklahoma State's home courts, which of course
(58:15):
is the team that in the last forty years has
one more NCAA championships than any other, and we won
it on their home course.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
It was something else. And I'll say this too. You know,
Oklahoma's won four consecutive championships in softball, and one of
the few teams that people really entertained perhaps being able
to top the Sooners this year is that Florida State team.
I mean, that is a great ball club. And for
(58:44):
Clemson to just you know, you just want to see
them hang in there, and they did, and then they
made the play, got the home run and got it.
And maybe even more more importantly, Tim McCubbin getting out
of that jam to start the bottom of the seventh
where two siminoals get on and I'm thinking, oh no,
not like this. I mean, that was also an impressive
part of that game that probably has been overlooked.
Speaker 6 (59:08):
Oh yeah, one d percent. Yeah, it was first and
second and uh and nobody out and then she got
the last three uh, three batters to him again. And
then of course the young lady who at the home
run for US was hitting two O eight going into
the game, which was the lowest batting average among Clemson starters. Uh,
you know entering the game, entering that that or in
(59:28):
the lineup for that game. So so just a lot
of amazing things that that took place. Very happy for
coach Ridman, who's you know, first class guy, does everything
the right way, and and and and you know he's
done it, you know, when we know the way college
sports are today, he's done it with freshman really, I mean,
(59:48):
and he's had you know, returnees that have that have
certainly done well. But there's a five or six freshmen
that are starting on this this team. So it certainly
bodes well for the future.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
Yeah, that's exactly that was. That was gonna be my
next statement when you brought that up. All right, final thing,
tim a big weekend series for the Clemson baseball team
as they go to Pitt They've lost three consecutive Atlantic
Coast Conference series after climbing all the way up to
number two in the country. What do you think is
gonna take to shake the cobwebs off of this group
and maybe get back to good.
Speaker 6 (01:00:22):
I know it's really been. It's it's hard for me
to recall a Clemson team that's gone from just playing
great to baseball. I mean, we were thirty six and seven.
Is that where we were? Thirty five and seven? At least?
I know, I know we had an eighty three percent
winning percentage and then just kind of struggled. And I
(01:00:43):
hate to say it, but it's not just one phase
of the game. I mean, we might lose a game
fifteen to ten, we might lose a game five to four,
but we just need to have some guys to step up,
I think offensively. And you know, we've had a couple
of injuries that have that have that have heard. But
we need to get We need to get this first
one tonight, and we need Cannock to have a have
(01:01:08):
a good, good, good pitching performance, and we need somebody
other than Cam to start hitting the hitting the baseball
on the consistent bases.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
Again. It's Clemson and pitt tonight, six o'clock on the
ACC Network Extra. You can watch it there as the
Tigers travel up to Pittsburgh again. Tim Ray on Twitter

Tigers yesterday, their first conference no hitter since nineteen seventy

Speaker 11 (01:06:51):
Are WHAT daba wants.
Speaker 7 (01:06:52):
An emplayers want them to fit the. Culture, AGAIN a
great pick up For clinson and getting a safety that
the position they're gonna need next year with out of
doubts and so you know this is gonna be positioned
to me in this recruiting, class and then they went
out and.
Speaker 13 (01:07:06):
Got one of.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
Them, well will you Mentioned Dabo? Sweeney that was the other.
Thing we've seen this a couple of, times not, necessarily
not necessarily From clemson, commits but players like phoning the
coach And Dabo sweeney got a little zoom or a
FaceTime call From anderson during the ceremony to make the.
Announcement what's your take on how these things have sort
of morphed over the.
Speaker 7 (01:07:27):
Years oh, man it has totally changed from you, know
back in the.
Speaker 11 (01:07:33):
Day and you, KNOW i remember remember C.
Speaker 13 (01:07:35):
J spillers announced how big that was and different it.
Speaker 7 (01:07:37):
Was H cj surprised his, mom.
Speaker 11 (01:07:41):
You, know right there handing her note telling her then.
Speaker 13 (01:07:44):
He was going to comp single LIKE i was going To.
Florida you, know everything is. Different you, know remember it used.
Speaker 7 (01:07:50):
To be all about the ball cap and then it
was anti Sequel ado and now you've got facetiming.
Speaker 13 (01:07:55):
Coaches it just seems, crazy.
Speaker 11 (01:07:57):
Man it's to go from one thing to. Events, uh you,
know these, kids like some of them like to do
little shows and you, know and it's their. TIME i get.
IT i understand it for each his own and this
was another one of those. THINGS i, Think, yeah that
made it, different.
Speaker 13 (01:08:11):
You know What i'm.
Speaker 2 (01:08:11):
Saying, Yeah, No AND i actually enjoy it when they
get right to. It you, know sometimes these guys take
it a little, long and you're, like come, on the
commitment supposed to be at four point thirty and it's
now five point. Fifteen and but, YEAH i appreciated the
way he got right to, it got down the, business
and Again Katavian anderson commanded To clemson just a little.
Bitigo will van Der boort from The Clemson insider with
(01:08:31):
us here on the program a little later in the
show than, usual so we will have to hit a
couple of breaks With. Will but he's up at the softball,
match And, Will i've got The clemson baseball game. On,
boy we'll get to them in a, minute because last
night a little no, hitter a combined no, hitter if you,
will have you ever attended a combined no hitter or
no hitter at?
Speaker 12 (01:08:51):
ALL i actually was at the two thousand and nine
games that they had the no hitter on.
Speaker 11 (01:09:00):
And that could bind no hitter that. Year so the
last time it, HAPPENED i was at. It and THEN
i was also at the game When Matt clark went
into the ninth.
Speaker 7 (01:09:08):
INNING i think had two outs back in twenty, NINETEEN
i believe he was one out from a no hitter
as and he would have been the First punson single
pitcher to throw a no hitter since nineteen eighty, four
because they haven't done that since eighty.
Speaker 13 (01:09:21):
Four But louisville got a hit on and so that ended.
Speaker 7 (01:09:25):
Its Uh SO i come close to a no hitter
with a single, player.
Speaker 11 (01:09:31):
And THEN i did see the seame no hitter back
in oh. Nine i'm not a big fan of the
team no.
Speaker 12 (01:09:36):
Hitter as much because it's, like, it's, yeah it's a no,
hitter but it's not.
Speaker 11 (01:09:41):
Like that a one player did.
Speaker 7 (01:09:42):
It community still a big deal to celebrate, It BUT
i much, rather as a sports writer.
Speaker 11 (01:09:47):
Clever a single player no.
Speaker 13 (01:09:49):
Hitter oh that's IF i had a.
Speaker 2 (01:09:51):
Preference, YEAH i, agree one hundred. Percent we'll hit a quick.
Break we'll come back with more From Will Van derbourt
right after this stay with, us rocking and rolling along
with you on A friday. Afternoon Will, vanderbort The Clemson,
insider hanging out with this yere. So, will we were
talking before the breakabout no hitters and you said that
you prefer the single man no, hitter AND i agree
in college, baseball is it just because they're trying to
(01:10:13):
protect the arms that you don't see more players get that?
OPPORTUNITY i, mean what's your vibe ON i, mean not
that they happen a lot in the major leagues, either
but it feels like with the number of games there
are in college, baseball you would certainly have more of.
THESE i think they've only been maybe four this season
so far in major college. BASEBALL i, mean what are
your thoughts on why we don't see it at?
Speaker 11 (01:10:35):
All, WELL i think a lot of it has to
do with.
Speaker 7 (01:10:39):
Analytics, now you don't coaches generally don't want their pitchers
to stay in after they've been seeing twice, Right once
the team has gone twice through the, lineup, right that's
when they generally are pulled the starter, Out and so
you just don't see pitchers lasting that long like last,
night you, KNOW i think it's one of the snat's
(01:11:01):
longest performances of his.
Speaker 13 (01:11:02):
Career you, KNOW i think it's the second.
Speaker 11 (01:11:05):
LONGEST i think he had eight innings in the game last.
Speaker 7 (01:11:07):
Year so it's just not something you've seen normally in
the major. League you've seen that as, well but you
don't see as maybe no hitters in the major.
Speaker 13 (01:11:15):
League as he used to because analytics.
Speaker 7 (01:11:18):
Say all bad and the team catches up to you
and all this, stuff and some of that may be.
True richard loses velocity a little. Bit they lose a
little bit of control the more they, pitched and.
Speaker 11 (01:11:28):
You saw that with knock last night and the eighth
ming right he.
Speaker 7 (01:11:31):
Got he got it down to two outs and he
just couldn't find the play after.
Speaker 11 (01:11:34):
That so they had to go and pull. Them and
SO i get, IT i understand. IT i think that's
probably part of.
Speaker 7 (01:11:40):
IT i think analytics has changed a lot of baseball
in different ways that it's used both at the.
Speaker 11 (01:11:46):
College level and the professional.
Speaker 13 (01:11:48):
Level and that's a little, unfair but it is what it.
Speaker 7 (01:11:51):
Is the game, changes everything changes in every, sport, right
so you, know it's like you know in THE, nfl,
right we'll see more fifteen six.
Speaker 13 (01:11:58):
Archivals than we've ever seen. Before, why, well because that
the kickers are, better they're.
Speaker 7 (01:12:03):
Stronger they this is all they do now where we
fall back in the, past that was in the, case
and it's the same way with other sports that. Sports
as you move on and athletes get, better hitting gets
better in, baseball so these pinners are.
Speaker 13 (01:12:16):
Smarter this is all they, do so they know what
to look for.
Speaker 11 (01:12:18):
More let's, say maybe thirty years.
Speaker 13 (01:12:20):
Ago thirty years.
Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
Ago it's funny you bring that. UP i said something
about that earlier BECAUSE i was Watching clemson And pitt
and in THE i think it was the bottom of
the third inning, whatever after Jere And purified hit his
three run. Homer, anyway he's out in the, outfield and you,
know he digs into his back pocket and pulls out
like a little index, card and you're certainly he's checking
(01:12:43):
the tendencies or whatever for the guys at the plate
that are. Batting And i'm thinking to, MYSELF i don't
recall any of that WHEN i was. YOUNGER i don't
even recall that ten years, ago like you cover it every.
Day when did that kind of become a. THING i, Mean,
clipson every player looks like the nature Boy Rick flair
with that big old card they got on their belt
(01:13:04):
book like they're From texas or. Something it's wild to
kind of see.
Speaker 9 (01:13:08):
THAT i love.
Speaker 11 (01:13:08):
It, yeah it's it's started in the last team.
Speaker 12 (01:13:12):
Years it really, has you, know and you've seen at
every level, now even the high.
Speaker 11 (01:13:17):
School teams now are doing.
Speaker 13 (01:13:18):
It like they have a scouting.
Speaker 7 (01:13:20):
Report each of the players on the on the big
time high school baseball, persons you'll, see well they reach
into their back pull it pocket and they pull out
this paper and they're they're getting the scouting report on
this uh on this player that's up.
Speaker 13 (01:13:31):
There right where before it was just, like you, know
your coach would tell, you, hey.
Speaker 11 (01:13:35):
This guy he likes to do this or, whatever but
he really didn't.
Speaker 13 (01:13:39):
Know you, know back WHEN i played and you, played,
right we didn't have that kind of.
Speaker 6 (01:13:44):
Stuff and.
Speaker 7 (01:13:46):
You, know but you, know they they the game has, changed,
man and it's like technology has changed and it's helped
supports more than ever.
Speaker 13 (01:13:53):
Before and you've seen that in the last ten.
Speaker 11 (01:13:56):
Years it's not just.
Speaker 13 (01:13:57):
Baseball as basketball or. FOOTBALL i mean you, KNOW i
mean you've got a high.
Speaker 12 (01:14:01):
School football games Now, walton and you see like television.
Speaker 11 (01:14:05):
Screens are these kids using these.
Speaker 7 (01:14:06):
iPads on the sidelines and the coach is getting with
them and they're coaching liking SOME nfl.
Speaker 11 (01:14:11):
Games it's they they didn't do that when we were, good, Right,
Yeah so you, know so.
Speaker 12 (01:14:17):
It's technology has changed a lot of.
Speaker 14 (01:14:21):
Things and now analytics has used more than ever, before
and you, know it's good for the, games but it's
ALSO i think THAT i think technology is bad, too BECAUSE.
Speaker 7 (01:14:31):
I think some of the nuances what makes these games
special have kind of gone. Away and it's unfortunate because
younger fans they probably don't even know What i'm talking.
Speaker 13 (01:14:39):
About BUT i know you.
Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
Do Will Van, dervoord The clemson, insider he's hanging out
with us here on the program. Today all, Right, will
let's shift. Gears twelve consecutive seasons A clemson And Notre,
dame all of that scheduled and lined. Up, man it
looks like just a monumental series for both, teams especially
given the changes in the mindset of the way THE
(01:15:02):
acc is gonna distribute. MONEY i know you've had a
little time to digest that, one, man what's kind of
your vibe on where that thing will?
Speaker 7 (01:15:09):
Hid, yeah it's you, know BASICALLY i talked To grand
Neth Me island down for The agency medi to.
Speaker 11 (01:15:19):
DAYS i talked to Another Dames i've played directly as.
Speaker 13 (01:15:22):
Well and so it came about in a situation where
they were just sitting around talking in a meeting one
time about shrink.
Speaker 12 (01:15:29):
And, schedule and they remember how good their games.
Speaker 7 (01:15:32):
Were and a championship game in the playoff, games you,
know they have some pretty big.
Speaker 13 (01:15:38):
Games prince their. Names and then he's got, thinking, hey
why don't we just play a?
Speaker 7 (01:15:43):
Series you, know why why are we just talking about
it when we can actually do something about.
Speaker 13 (01:15:47):
It and five, years if you, recall are already planned
by the A.
Speaker 11 (01:15:51):
Sec so they worked out the other seven, years uh
to add to, it and that those seven years will.
Speaker 13 (01:15:58):
Have no ties from the agency at all Into commission Of.
Speaker 11 (01:16:01):
Phillips so you, know in those Years Notre dame will
be Playing clinton.
Speaker 13 (01:16:06):
Plus five OTHER acc.
Speaker 7 (01:16:07):
Teams and so, now however they worked that out that's
BETWEEN acc And Notre. Dame but For clinton in those
years that those games are In, clemson you know that's
gonna Help clinton when it comes to the rep chair
with the with the conference in the sense that you,
know they're gonna give now teams that have more eyeballs on,
them we're gonna get more money than the other.
Speaker 11 (01:16:27):
Teams and so this is gonna be a big market
game where a lot of people are gonna be. Watching
and so that's gonna be more money For clintson every other, year.
Speaker 7 (01:16:35):
Right and when it comes to the revenue share with
the other teams from the, Conference so that's.
Speaker 11 (01:16:40):
A big benefit For clinton.
Speaker 7 (01:16:42):
There Notre dame is gonna get obviously a bigger bump
to THE nbc contracts because, now if you, recall a
couple Of Notre dames games last year weren't ON. Nbc
they were they went over To peacock.
Speaker 12 (01:16:54):
And they were streaming, them you, know So Notre dame
didn't like.
Speaker 13 (01:16:58):
That they want to be on the main.
Speaker 7 (01:16:59):
Network and so now Getting clemson and maybe they're gonna
get some games Of Florida State miami too and here
in the, future that's gonna assure them that they're not
gonna be shotting their games On, peacon if you.
Speaker 13 (01:17:10):
Will and that's gonna be more about.
Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
It for another, name, obviously we Got Will van Der
bort with us here for another, segment we'll hit a quick,
break we'll come. Back we'll continue our conversation with, him as,
Again clemson A Notre dame. Inc a huge, deal twelve
seasons of, football just the fourth Team clemson's ever played
twelve or more consecutive years. Against we'll talk With Will
vanderbort on the flip, side stay with.
Speaker 4 (01:17:31):
Us what have you done for me? Lately it's a fair.
Question just don't lose sight of the bigger, picture don't forget.
History look you for us At. Clemson the answer to
the questions what have you done for me? Lately and
(01:17:52):
what have you?
Speaker 6 (01:17:52):
Done always are the.
Speaker 4 (01:17:54):
Same we win.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
Some final segment on A friday, afternoon the show That
(01:18:48):
shakes the South, Land clemson sports tal on Swan Will
vandibort from The Clemson insider with. Us he's actually at
Mit Water stadium right, now where The Clemson tiger softball
team getting ready to get underway in their opening round.
Matchup but in the previous game that took place at
two thirty this, Afternoon northwestern Top kentucky for. Nothing And
(01:19:09):
WILL i think that's somewhat significant because as good as
This clemson baseball team has been at the beginning of the.
Season one of those you, know six losses that they
had out of the gates was against That Kentucky wildcat.
Speaker 7 (01:19:22):
Team, YEAH i, mean you know it's they'd also slow
start down there in Those Boca raton tournaments and stuff like.
Speaker 13 (01:19:28):
That so, yeah you, know but there's a different counting
team than the one that.
Speaker 11 (01:19:32):
Played early in the.
Speaker 13 (01:19:33):
YEAR i, mean it's not even closed.
Speaker 7 (01:19:35):
These young young ladies when they're forty one and six
in the last forty seven, games which is ridiculous as
you think about, that there's not too many teams in
the country that can say, that you, know and then
you know the way they've played down the, stretch and you,
know beating three of the top eight national seeds in
the last month In South, Carolina tennessee And Florida.
Speaker 13 (01:19:54):
State you, know that tells you.
Speaker 7 (01:19:57):
How good they're playing so off ball right now and
there eating how well they're playing at the.
Speaker 11 (01:20:01):
Team i've told a lot of people This, Alman i'll
tell you the same. Thing i've covered a lot of
good teams At, clemsons whether it be, football, basketball.
Speaker 13 (01:20:09):
Baseball this softball team.
Speaker 11 (01:20:12):
Is the Funnest i've.
Speaker 7 (01:20:13):
Enjoyed this is the Most i've enjoyed covering the team
because they have so much.
Speaker 13 (01:20:18):
Fun there's so much.
Speaker 7 (01:20:19):
Camaraderie, uh there's not one person that you, said, oh
this person has to make a. Play they each have
each other's, back you. Know you See Maddie moore make
a big. Kid you See Macon snron make a big,
hid you See collins make a big, kid.
Speaker 11 (01:20:33):
Big dickens make a big.
Speaker 13 (01:20:34):
Hit dickkins make a big hit in the.
Speaker 11 (01:20:36):
Playoffs and ah, turnaments you, say and then you see
and they're, like you Know Katie.
Speaker 13 (01:20:41):
Johnson you Know Calie johnson making a big play as
well with like to Went.
Speaker 11 (01:20:45):
Homer gets Flowed.
Speaker 13 (01:20:45):
State it's somebody different every day that makes the. Play
it picks this team.
Speaker 7 (01:20:50):
Up and that's what makes them so dangerous because there's
not just one person you gotta worry. About you got
to worry about The, entirerolno and they're getting good pitches
too from.
Speaker 13 (01:20:58):
Respacings and, also, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:21:01):
AND i think like when you lose a key, piece
certainly Like Valerie kagele was, on you, know not just
in the circle but also at the. Plate, naturally everybody, believes,
hey this is gonna be a big backstep. Year BUT
i could make the, argument given the way they finished
and what you just talked about going forty one and
six to this, point if you're A tiger softball fan
(01:21:22):
and you had concerns about whatever the Post valerie Kgel
era is gonna look, like because, AGAIN i don't know
if you'll ever have a greater player just in terms
of her impact in both, spots but, boy it sure
does feel like this softball program's gonna be a you,
know a force to be dealt with for a while
in college.
Speaker 11 (01:21:39):
Softball they, dude when you look at their line, up
seven of their starting nine or either freshman or, sophomore
that's a scary. Thought.
Speaker 7 (01:21:49):
Yeah and then they got a couple other freshmen that
are contributed a lot this year as well that are
gonna move up and be playing a lot more next
year as, well that are gonna be a little bit
older and part of their very young.
Speaker 11 (01:21:59):
Team now they're gonna have to get some.
Speaker 7 (01:22:01):
Of their young pitchers that they were gonna red shirt
this year is gonna come up and you'll see them
next year because they've had two seniors.
Speaker 11 (01:22:07):
This year that ifil that THAT i just mentioned, earlier so.
Speaker 13 (01:22:10):
They'll lose those so they'll have to get better in the.
Speaker 7 (01:22:12):
Circle they'll be looking for somebody as pitcher and obviously
at second.
Speaker 11 (01:22:16):
Base and third. Base but they got some very good
potential on this. Team i'm with.
Speaker 13 (01:22:22):
YOU i think if they keep all this girls, here
then this, program this is.
Speaker 11 (01:22:26):
Just the tip of the.
Speaker 7 (01:22:27):
Iceberm to be honest with, YOU i Think riman set
THAT i have a very good program for years to
come here At clinton and this. Team the crazy thing
about it is they've already done things the other teams couldn't.
Speaker 13 (01:22:38):
Do they won an agency tournament, championship so you, know.
Speaker 11 (01:22:43):
And they're, mantras why not?
Speaker 4 (01:22:44):
Us?
Speaker 11 (01:22:44):
Right and it's carried them. All it's carried them all
summer on off, SPRING i should.
Speaker 7 (01:22:49):
Say and why they're LIKE i, said forty one and
six in the last twenty seven, Games.
Speaker 2 (01:22:53):
Well WILL i? Know you got to get to that.
Game one final question will shift back to baseball momentarily
because the softball team is hosting it at water right.
Now most projections have This clemson baseball team as good
as they were three weeks, ago have them on the
outside of being one of the top sixteen seeds in
THE Ncaa tournament and not being a. Host they actually
(01:23:14):
have them lined up right, now they go back To
Coastal carolina with The Chanta clears hosting a. Regional what say,
You is there enough left in the in the schedule
for This clemson team to earn one of those postseason hosting.
Sites there, is and and first.
Speaker 7 (01:23:31):
Of, All clemson's got a great reputation as a, host
and not all those. Aults right, Now coast Of carolina
is gonna get one of the conches and they beat
them head to.
Speaker 13 (01:23:38):
Head that's gonna.
Speaker 7 (01:23:39):
Happen so if You're, clemson you know what you want
Is coast To carolina to win their, conference right because
you know you don't want.
Speaker 11 (01:23:47):
That might be an at large team getting, in, Right
SO i think Your, clemson what you have to do
is right, now they're up nine to two in the
bottom of the fifth At. Pittsburgh they need to finish
this game.
Speaker 7 (01:23:58):
Out and then win them are get the, sweep and
THEN i think they need to get at least one
win an agency.
Speaker 13 (01:24:03):
TOURNAMENT i think if they do, that THEN i think
they could probably.
Speaker 11 (01:24:07):
HOST i think that's where they're sitting at right. Now
they got to make a, run some kind of a
run in the ations to.
Speaker 13 (01:24:12):
Tournament they just.
Speaker 11 (01:24:13):
Can't go and go one and. Out they do, THAT
i think they won't.
Speaker 7 (01:24:15):
Host so right, NOW i think that going To Coastal
carolina seems like the most logical thing that's going to.
Speaker 13 (01:24:21):
Happen but once it's still, there there's still some work
to be. Done there's some teams they can beat.
Speaker 11 (01:24:26):
That can help their resume going. Forward so they just
have to, win and that's really what it comes down.
Speaker 7 (01:24:32):
To they need to finish out this series Against hits
and then they need to win one or.
Speaker 13 (01:24:35):
Two games in The Asency.
Speaker 2 (01:24:36):
Tournament will enjoy the softball, game, MAN i appreciate.
Speaker 11 (01:24:39):
IT i love thanks, Always, BUDDY i thought to you.
Speaker 2 (01:24:41):
Later, man there Is will Van voort The clemson. Inside All,
right we gotta get out. Here we'll be back On.
Monday until, then as, always y'all take care now and
Goat tigers
