our loyal supporters here on the show The Shakespeare Southland.
They help keep local radio going in the midlands of
South Carolina. Now, over the past few days, we have
taken a look at some over under records. By the way,
much like the rest of the summer. On Friday, we
rehash an interview from earlier in the week. We will
(02:09):
talk with Jeff Cameron, host of the Jeff Camera Show
and more chant TV about the Florida State seminoles in
our number one today in just a little while, and
then that interview will be sliced up from earlier in
the week. And then in hour two new guest Alert.
New guest Alert, Jason Priester joins the program from the
(02:32):
Clemson Insider. We'll talk recruiting with MC where Clemson heads
in his mind with this running back situation in the
twenty twenty six recruiting class. Or do they just stand
pat and say they feel good? Do they turn to
the portal? Later we'll talk with JP about all of that.
Now our number two. So we've gone through some over
under records this week. And I don't know if I'm
(02:55):
like the eternal optimist or what, but I've yet to
run into one where I feel with confidence that it's
a team that's going to fall under the over underwin
loss record. But I had Florida State going eight and four,
SMU going nine and three, Michigan nine and three, Georgia
(03:18):
eleven and one, Alabama ten and two, and Miami nine
and three. And today we're going to take a look
at three schools here out of the gates that are
of interest to many of you. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish,
the Florida Gators, and we'll also look at Southern cal.
(03:41):
Now next week we'll get into some other teams that
you guys love to talk about. We'll probably by the
end of the week certainly slide into Clemson and South Carolina.
But Ohio State's got to be on that dock at
Oregon's got to be on that docket. We're going to
talk about the top teams and the over under expectations
(04:01):
again before fall camp, before we know about who's injured
or who can't play right. So there is all of that,
But projected win totals around the world of college football
can fluctuate just a little bit. They do fluctuate. It's
(04:24):
not a cold, hard, fast number. But we begin with
the Notre Dame Fighting Irish who sit atop the list
of teams in the country that might go undefeated or
the most likely to go undefeated this season, and they
(04:46):
were the number one team in the country when it
came down to the opportunity to go undefeated. Now they're
projected season totals ten and a half coming into the year,
much like Georgia, another team that we kind of ran
through their resume and thought the possibility certainly existed that
(05:10):
they could get to a twelve to zero regular season record.
But I also hedge my bets a little bit. And
again these are I'm not betting. When I say hedge
my bets, I just mean in my world here on
the radio, I give myself a little leeway by saying
that there's probably a loss in there. I just am
not quite sure which one it will be. And depending
(05:32):
on how Gunnar Stockton looks, as I said, maybe there's
more right. But Notre Dame, much like Georgia, so far
on this list, is the top team in terms of
win loss total, projected at ten and a half. And
(05:53):
so here's Notre Dame's schedule and how I think things
will play out for the Fighting Irish in the twenty
twenty five season. Now, Notre Dame, you might recall, opens
up their schedule against the Miami Hurricanes, and we did
(06:15):
Miami's roster or schedule yesterday, and that was one of
the games that I felt like Miami would likely lose,
even though that game is on the road. So if
I chalk it up for a loss for Miami, I
got to chalk it up for a win for Notre Dame.
(06:35):
And it's a key game for both teams. Certainly, if
Miami could win that game, I think they got a
great chance of maybe having like a ten to two
record versus nine to three where I have them, and
I think even nine to three might be questioning, could
be eight and five, excuse me, eight and four, which
is again under that eight and a half total. But
I gave them a little benefit of the doubt. But
(06:56):
I don't think they win the opener. I don't think
they win the opener against the Fighting Irish. Then Notre
Dame has a week off and then they will host
Texas A and M. Now I don't have a good
bead on what A and M will be this season,
(07:19):
quite frankly, but I do feel more comfortable about the
quarterback situation at Texas A and M with Marcel Reid
after what we saw from him a year ago, just
in the sense of how much of a playmaker he is,
the way he can move around the pocket. He's expected
(07:41):
to be the starting quarterback. But then you flip the
script to Notre Dame and kind of like some of
these other teams we've talked about here, they're not certain. CJ. Carr,
Kenny Minchie, those are the two guys that they're down
to because Steve Angeli transferred out. Both of those guys
(08:04):
did a pretty good job during the spring game for
the Fighting Irish. But it's it's kind of an uncertainty
and it will it will be a bit of an
uncertainty obviously going into Game one. But even though I
don't have a good beat on A and M, that team,
(08:25):
with the defense that they should have this year, I
certainly like Mike Elko as a head coach night game
on the road. I'll take Texas A and M to
slip out of there with a win. But it's it's
it's barely.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
So.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
That starts Notre Dame off at one and one. Then
they'll host Purdue they're two and one there. They should
beat Arkansas to be three and one. They should beat
Boise State to be four and one. They host North
Carolina State, that would make them five in one. They've
got a match up at home against Southern Cal. I
(09:06):
would say, riding a five and one record at that point,
they likely win that one to go to six and one.
They should beat Boston College to be seven and one.
They should beat Navy and go to eight and one.
They should beat Pitt on the road. You go to
nine and one. Syracuse will probably be a tighter game
than you would expect ten and one, and then Stanford
(09:31):
at home. They should win that one. I would put
them at eleven and one. I think the real questions
that could take them below their ten and a half
point projected rating would certainly be the opener at Miami
again given their question marks at quarterback, and then their
game on October the eighteenth, that home against Southern Cal,
(09:52):
depending on how the Trojans look at that point. Again,
we're gonna talk about Southern Cal here in a minute,
and how we think they'll look in in that game
on October the eighteenth. But I think Notre Dame's got
a legitimate chance to go eleven and one. I don't
see an undefeated schedule in front of me for the
Fighting Irish, regardless of home and away status. You know,
(10:17):
they go to Arkansas September the twenty seventh, you know,
sec matchup on the road. Maybe that's one that becomes
a bit of a hurdle for him. But at this
point I'll lean in on eleven and one for the
Fighting Irish. Now for a team that's very intriguing for
(10:40):
a couple of reasons, the Florida Gators, and they are
a team that if we talk about like a roller
coaster for Billy Napier as a head coach. I mean it's, hey,
we want to fire this guy. Oh, we love this guy.
And so they kind they've kind of gone back and forth,
(11:02):
much like the Florida State Seminoles to a degree, because
there were some games a year ago when they go
eight and five where their fans were just dismayed, like
getting beat down in the season opening by Miami forty
one to seven team, and you have some other losses
along the way against top quality teams college football playoff
(11:24):
teams like Georgia and Texas and Tennessee and so you
can lose four or five games and still feel like
you have a pretty good roster. And how competitive were
you in those games? I think that Tennessee game, if
I remember, went to overtime. I know they weren't competitive
(11:46):
against Texas. I remember that Georgia matchup in Jacksonville was
a pretty good ball game a year ago. But for
twenty fifteen. Florida enters this season with a project did
over under total depending on where you look, of seven
and a half or eight and a half. And in
(12:09):
this case, we'll lean on the over. We'll take the
higher number. There, excuse me, We'll take the eight and
a half, just to make it a little more difficult
for me because on everybody else, I've kind of landed
on the over. So let's take a look at the
Florida Gators. Obviously, their quarterback situation spectacular. I loved DJ
Lagway's profile, especially coming out of high schools, kind of
(12:32):
hoping he'd land at Clemson. Quite frankly, he's had some injuries,
one to his throwing shoulder limited him during springball. He's
had some lower body injuries. There's been some concerns about
his health. But to me, there's no concern about his attitude,
leadership ability. He checks all the boxes for me as
(12:54):
far as a quarterback goes. So can Florida get to
the over on eight and a half, which would be
a nine win season. They open the year against LIU,
that's a no brainer. At home Ben Hill Griffin Stadium,
the Swamp, that's a dub. They take on South Florida
the next week, that's another dub. They go on the
(13:15):
road to face LSU Brian Kelly Garrett Nussmeyer, and nus
Meyer expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in
the country. Clemson'll see him up close and personal Week one.
I don't think Florida goes into Tiger Stadium and comes
away with the victory. So I drop them to two
and one on the road at Miami again with the
(13:36):
Miami Hurricanes. Yesterday, I had them at nine and three,
but losing to Florida and dropping the Hurricanes at that
time two two and two. So I'll give Florida in
this scenario the win there to push the Gators to
three and one on the season. Then they host Texas
(13:56):
that's going to be a loss that'll send them to
three and two. I do However, think that Florida is
capable of going to Texas A and M a team
we just talked about a few minutes ago when we
looked at that Notre Dame schedule, and I do think
that Florida can go into College Station at Kyle Field
and come out with a win. So I would take
(14:18):
a victory there. I think Lagway's got the personality and
the energy to lead a team in a hostile environment
to a w. That would push them the Florida Gators
out to four and two. They should beat Mississippi State.
That's five and two against Georgia in Jacksonville. Yeah, I
still I talked about Georgia the other day. I think
(14:40):
they're going eleven and one. I don't think the loss
is necessarily to Florida. It certainly could be, But in
this scenario for the Gators, I'll say no to that.
That drops them to five and three on the season
entering their final four games at Kentucky, they should win
to go to six and three. At Old Miss. I
(15:01):
don't know that they can beat Old Miss. I really
like and I'm gonna reserve judgment to a degree here
on Old Miss, But I like Lane Kiffin as a coach.
You might not like him as a person, but I
like him as a coach. So I'll say that Old
Miss wins that game that pushes the Gators to six
(15:23):
and four versus Tennessee. That game's at home, that feels
like one that is winnable. Of lean in on the
home field advantage, you give him seven. And then against
Florida State, I think they certainly win, and I think
(15:43):
that would be eight and four, which means I would
have to take the under on the Florida Gators this season.
I think it's some tough sledding again, Old Miss a
question marks, just like everything I've talked about here. Depending
on how some of these teams look at that point
in the season, you might feel differently about Tennessee, about
(16:04):
Old Miss, even about Florida State. But at this point,
off the hoof eight and four, I'd say under for
Florida if I give them an eight and a half
on the over under totals wins this year, all right,
Final one for US today, Southern col Now, I don't
(16:25):
know how long it's gonna take us to get used
to calling them a big ten team, but hey, a
big ten team. Seven and a half is the current
over under on wins for the Trojans, and I would
imagine if they finish six and six or worse, the
(16:47):
temperature is gonna be way up coming into next year.
For Lincoln Riley, I mean, Southern Cal is an eleven
time national championship winning program and they didn't bring Lincoln
Riley out there from Oklahoma to be average, and I
don't think they would be if they were just playing
in the Pac twelve. But playing in the Big ten,
(17:10):
it's a little shift. I don't know if the cross
country travels an issue or not, but again, seven to
five the number that currently exists in the sense of
over under for Southern Cal. They open with Missouri State,
that's a definite win. They played Georgia Southern at home,
that's a win. They go to Purdue, I think they
(17:34):
win that to go to three and oh on the season.
They host Michigan State. I think Southern Cal should win
that win in be four and oh, they go to Illinois.
That's a different game on the road. The fighting line,
I have a lot of momentum right now coming off
of their bowl game victory over South Carolina. Britt Beelima
has proven hasn't proven track record in the Big Ten.
(17:57):
His style works there. I think his style probably could
have worked in the SEC, but the problem is nobody
wants to be patient in the world of sports anymore.
But either way, chalk up the first loss of the
season there on the road in Champagne. Then they host Michigan.
I don't like the Wolverines in a whole lot, but
I think they'll win this game that drops them to
(18:19):
four and two. Again, they go to Notre Dame. We
talked about that one just a few minutes ago. I
called it a likely win for Notre Dame because I
think at that point in the season, the Fighting Irish
will have a little bit of momentum, which would drop
Southern Cal to four and three and give them three
consecutive losses. I think they win at Nebraska to move
(18:41):
to five and three on the season. I think they
win against Northwestern to move to six and three on
the year. Then they host Iowa. They should win that
one that would make them seven and three. I think
they lose at Oregon that makes them seven and four,
and then they should beat I think they should beat
(19:02):
UCLA in the season finale to go to eight and four,
So I'll take Southern cal at eight and four with
the over and again, those are what you might label
I mean, I know there's no such things like a
quality loss, but some schools like to talk about them.
I think losses against Oregon, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Illinois,
(19:27):
but I like them to get to eight wins this season.
Just looking at the schedule, I really do. I certainly
Iowa could come out there and win. That Iowa offense
it should be better this year. You would imagine it
can't be worse. And then maybe there's some people that
are high on Nebraska. I'm not, but yeah, I'll say
(19:47):
eight and four for Southern Cal so and over there.
All right, quick breat When we come back. Jeff Cameron
joined US earlier in the week. Will dive into that interview.
Plus Jason Priester joins US an hour two. Keep it Locked,
Rocking and rolling with you on a Friday afternoon we've
done throughout the summer. On Fridays, we reset some interview
or interviews from earlier in the week, and of course,
(20:08):
if you are a Florida State fan hanging out with us.
Jeff Cameron, host of the Jeff Cameron Show from war
Chant TV joined us here on the program to talk
about the Florida State seminals.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
Again.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
We looked at them that same day. Seven and a
half is the over under own wins. My guests put
them at eight and four. Nonetheless, here's some time that
we spent with Jeff Cameron earlier in the week. Jeff,
what's up, buddy? How are you much lotin?
Speaker 4 (20:41):
It's almost time, buddy.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
I'm great, I'm doing great.
Speaker 6 (20:43):
Thanks for having me on, and I'm excited. You know,
you and I were talking a little bit off the
air about the upcoming ACC kickoff, and you know, once
we get down to where it's like thirty days away
from that happening, you realize it's almost go time. Because
you do those interviews, you're talking the players and the coaches, you.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
See the other media, and you're ready to go.
Speaker 6 (20:59):
Then camps start getting going and next thing you know,
you look up and it's it's freaking February. So yeah,
I'm getting geared up. We've almost survived the interminable summer.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Florida State will be day two at the ACC kickoff
this year up in Charlotte. That's July the twenty third
a Wednesday, and there's a lot of buzz around the Seminoles.
Obviously for the fan base, I'm sure it feels a
little bit like a roller coaster. I mean, a couple
of years ago, you're undefeated through the regular season, you
get left out of the College Football Playoff. There's a
lot of hubbub about all that, and then last year
(21:31):
the Seminoles sort of face plant. Where is the fan
base right now? And you know what are you hearing
from the people locally that follow the Seminoles.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
It's a unique time.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
I've covered the team for over twenty five years, and
I don't know that I've ever seen a time like
this because I think I could describe the fan base
as frustrated, you know, forlorn, confused, angry, optimistic.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
It's really weird.
Speaker 6 (21:59):
You don't usually get all of that in one fail swoop.
But it is a modern world of college football where
you could go twelve and zero in a regular season,
win a thirteenth game in an ACC championship, and then
turn around and get told it's not good enough to
go to the college Football Playoff in an unprecedented stub
and then think, okay, well maybe they'll go on a
revenge tour the next year. Oh no, no, they're gonna
fall off a cliff in a way that no team
(22:20):
ever has and go to and ten. So the fan
base went from loving Mike Norvel and thinking that the
program was back to where they believe it rightfully should
be competing for conference titles, going to playoffs, all that
sort of thing, to now wondering whether or not this
coach is the coach for them, and this season will
go a long way in deciding that. And that's the
(22:41):
other part of the modern college football landscape. We watched
teams go from being terrible to good, from good to
great to awful, from awful to great. I mean, nobody
thought Indiana was ever gonna be any good. All of
a sudden they were. Even Michigan, which had won the
national championship the previous year, turn run off five games.
So it's a weird time in college football, and I
(23:02):
think people don't really know what to make of it,
especially when you're on the wrong end of two and ten.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
He's on Twitter at Jay Cameron Show. You can listen
to him from one to four daily all ninety three
point three. But the best way to catch him is
with the war Chant TV channel over on YouTube. And so, Jeff,
let's take a step back, I guess and talk about
what you just mentioned with Mike Norvelle. I was looking
(23:29):
at his contract a few weeks ago, and I remember
there was something in there along the lines of where
he was going to be giving into like this seminole
foundation of some sort to kind of give back. Is
that in your mind? And if I'm wrong on that,
please let me know. But is that in your mind
just a way for him to try to gain some
favor given sort of the treacherous ground that I feel
(23:51):
like he might be on if Florida State does have
a disappointing year.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
Well, I think it's a PR move. Sure, yeah, I
think it absolutely is. You know how these things go
where coaches will donate to certain clubs or certain efforts
from the university. It curries favor, it gets some good PR.
I always wonder if there aren't caveats and those kinds
of deal that allow him to recoup the money that
they give. I'm a little bit jaded that way, but
(24:18):
I do think it was an effort to, uh again,
kind of put a best foot forward in Olive Branch
if you will for what just occurred, I will give
my credit. I've interviewed Mike many many times, obviously, and
I know I'm kind of off the record on the
record in terms of like having this conversation about his
time at Florida State, and he was embarrassed.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
He owned it.
Speaker 6 (24:38):
He was humiliated, angry, frustrated, he was all of the
things that the fans were about what happened a year ago.
I think he was incredulous. I don't think he thought
that could happen. And now the question becomes, no matter
how sorry, if sorrowful, one is what do you do
about it? What do you do to.
Speaker 5 (24:55):
Save your job? I mean, make no mistake.
Speaker 6 (24:57):
If Florida State is anything other than a seven or
eight win team, if not better, he's fired.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Six and six won't save his job.
Speaker 6 (25:06):
He's got to win games, and he's got to win
games right now. You can't go to inten.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
At for State. You just can't.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
It's for State, just like if you if you went
to intenn at Clemson.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
No matter what Dabos Sweeney.
Speaker 6 (25:18):
Has done, and he's done a lot, people would want
him gone.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
You can't go to and ten.
Speaker 5 (25:23):
You're a program of.
Speaker 6 (25:26):
Note to say the least in the last forty years.
You're part of the fabric of what elite college football
looks like for the last forty or fifty years. You
cannot go to and ten and so as much as
they loved the guy the previous year, and they even
loved him the year before that when he won ten
games and got the program back in the right direction,
(25:48):
moving in the right direction, it was such a cataclysmic
failure that people are absolutely stunned and don't know what
to think about how a guy could be that and
also go to intent.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
So I think it's all on the line right now.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
They go a little bit of our conversation with Jeff
Cameron from earlier in the week. Again, it's all on
the line right now. When talking about Mike Norvel will
dive into what he thinks went wrong during dj will
ungla Le's short tenure there at FSU, and again looking
at the seminoles, seven point five for the over under,
(26:28):
and again I have them slightly over. But the problem,
and Jeff will address this, is the fact that even
if you believe and look, there are no guarantees that
Florida State goes eight and four. But when you look
at that Florida State schedule and you think about the
(26:50):
Alabama game in the opener where they are more than
a two touchdown underdog at this point at home, when
you think about them at Clemson, which very few people
believe Florida State is going to beat the Tigers. The
final game of the season against Florida on the road
(27:10):
will be tough, no doubt. And then that Miami game
could be a hinge game on whether they could squeeze
a nine to three season out of it. But Florida
State's gonna have to beat some teams that people don't
expect them to beat in order to be better than
eight and four, in my opinion, stay with us. Lawton
(27:31):
swam with you Clemson Sports Talk. On a Friday, we
were talking with Jeff Cameron from war Chant TV. Earlier
in the week we interviewed him. Here's a little bit
more from that conversation, and we lean in on djuy
Unglaa in his time in Tallahassee. So if we flashed
back Jeff, when when Florida State announced that djuy Unglawa
(27:53):
was gonna be coming, I thought to myself, I don't
think this is gonna work. Having a year to look
back at it, and I know he obviously got injured,
but even still, if DJ plays, I don't think the
team's much better. What were your thoughts on that move
initially a year ago and now that it's all said
and done, how do the fans look back on it?
Speaker 6 (28:12):
Obviously everybody's frustrating. But here's the thing that I thought
on I really thought that they believed the move to
get DJ was predicated on a betteran offensive line that
had a ton of starts under their belt. And some
of those offensive linemen had actually played very well in
the conference, had done, you know, to the extent that
(28:33):
they were a second team All Conference, first team All
Conference a couple of those guys. So they thought they
had a known commodity up front. They wanted to run
the ball downhill and throw off a play action. DJ
has nothing if he doesn't have a big arm, and
he does have that, so they thought, all right, well,
we'll bring in a big arm guy.
Speaker 4 (28:48):
We'll bring in some speed through the poral and bringing.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
A Jalen Brown guys like that at wide receiver, and
they think, okay, we'll stretch the field, we'll throw the
ball down the field. Run, we'll throw off a play action. Well,
big problem Day one. They couldn't run the ball, and
they couldn't run the ball early. They couldn't run the
ball when they tried to flip up what they were
doing offensively, under no set of circumstances were they able
(29:11):
to successfully run the football. Well, that renders DJ absolutely
useless because he's not mobile. The other part of it,
which they tried to keep under wraps, is he suffered
I believe, and I'll have to protect myself here, I
believe he suffered some sort.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
Of knee or ankle injury in camp.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
The reason I say that is not wild speculation. When
camp started, he wasn't wearing a brais, wasn't wearing a sleeve,
wasn't wearing anything on a Zora extrevity, and he moved
around well as camp went on. First it started with
the sleeve. Later it was a full on knee brace.
They continually said, no, everything's fine. Well, that can't be
because as slow as he was, and maybe he was
(29:51):
always somewhat slow, he was never that immobile. So now
you have a guy who cannot move at all and
you can't run, well, you're dead in the water. Teams
just pin their ears back and it was over before
it started. And they never really did get anybody to
develop that they brought in. It was just a wild
swing and miss. It was always a reach. I don't
(30:13):
disagree with you, but I understood the philosophy. When they
couldn't run, it was blown out of the water.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Jeff Cameron with us here on Twitter at Jay Cameron Show. So, Jeff,
I will tell you I did take the over Florida
State seven and a half. I didn't actually gamble on it,
but I looked at their schedule. I think it's a
team that finishes over seven and a half wins this year.
I think eight and four's probably likely. I think nine
to three is possible. It could certainly shift in the
(30:40):
wrong direction for Mike Norville as well. But when you
look at this team, they open with Alabama. We heard
the comments from the former Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos
over the weekend. Your thoughts on that opener and sort
of the locker room material that that gives the Crimson
tide when they probably don't need it, being about fifteen
(31:01):
point favorites or so heading into the open or over
the seminoles.
Speaker 4 (31:05):
It was certainly curious. I don't think it was ideal.
Speaker 6 (31:09):
I'm sure, I'm sure the coaches didn't love it.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
I will say that.
Speaker 6 (31:14):
I think there's a rather sizable segment of this fan base,
so that was happy to hear it. There's been a
lot of them open, a lot of head down, a
lot of frustration and a lack of confidence, and I
think that some people thought it was a bit of
a breath of fresh air to have the person at
the most important position to lead your team at quarterback
(31:35):
brimming with confidence. Whether that's foolishness or not remains to
be seen.
Speaker 5 (31:39):
He may be made to look silly.
Speaker 4 (31:42):
But I think a lot of people.
Speaker 6 (31:43):
Feel like I'd rather have that than all of the
uncertainty from guys that are supposed to lead from that
position that we've seen in recent memory, and so namely DJ.
People really got on DJ for being a lack of
a vocal leader, for not showing a sort of a
sense of bravado and belief.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
They didn't like.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
The unsuredness they saw from him, so I think they
sort of embraced this. We'll see. I would have preferred
some of those comments to come out, but I.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
Would say this.
Speaker 6 (32:16):
They're gonna run the heck out of that kid, and
this whole offense is gonna be predicated on him being
able to make plays and be dynamic with his legs,
and I don't think they'll shy away from it. I
mean to the point where I think they'll run him excessively.
And that's what you do when you're bringing Gus males on,
you run the quarterback. This is what he does. Everything
is predicated off of that. So I do believe that
(32:37):
they want that kid to be confident because he's gonna
be relied upon to be a big part of why
the running game gets turned around. I still think Alabama
wins the game. As far as the schedule goes eight
and four I think would be ideal.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
Given this schedule.
Speaker 6 (32:49):
The problem with eight and four, if you projected out
and Sam taking the over seven and a half, is
that that means you really probably lose every meaningful game
that is on your schedule, namely Alabama, Miami, obviously Clemson
on the road in November, and then at the end
of the year Florida. It would mean that you lost
all four of those games you won the others, which
(33:10):
means you have wins over Kent State, East Texas, Virginia, Stamford,
Pitt Wake, and I'm trying to remember, oh MP State
and bought Thatch. So you would only have a marginal
couple of wins there that you could circle and say
you were really pleased about.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Now.
Speaker 6 (33:25):
The retort to that is, they won two games last year, Jeff,
they'll be happy about any of them.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
Fair enough.
Speaker 6 (33:30):
Fair enough, But if you're a diehard Florida State fan
that's been around a while and you believe in a
certain standard that doesn't exactly move the needle. I guess
it's baby steps. But I think the best thing that
could happen to them would actually be, say they go
eight and four or even nine to three. The best
thing that could happen to them would be one of
those losses is to a team that I just named
(33:53):
that they don't suspect they're gonna lose to. In one
of the wins, be over in Alabama or a Florida
or a Miami or obviously it's up hill climbing, but
on the road against Clinton something like that, that would
maybe be an indicator you're closer than you think you are.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Again, that's a portion of our interview with Jeff Cameron
from earlier in the week, we'll wrap it up. We'll
talk with him about the move to bring in Gus
mals On to Florida State, and of course also kind
of dive into the expectations again for this Florida State
seminole team, as it feels a lot like, not necessarily
(34:28):
like a must win year, Like I don't think they
got to make the college Football Playoff, but they've got
to have a bounce back. They got to have a
step in the right direction because last season felt inexplicable,
given the fact even with dj Lui Ungeli coming in,
(34:50):
given the fact that they had just been undefeated the
year prior, Well, you take a big step back like that,
there's just not a lot of leeway for coaches around
the country. In Florida State, fans are frustrated because they
have not been consistently good for a dozen years. Final
segment of our number one Here on the program, Jason
Priester from The Clemson Insider joins us to talk recruiting
(35:11):
and more in our number two don't forget our friends
at Alumni Hall on the corner of Campus Well College
Avenue of downtown Clemson. Next time you're up in Tiger Town,
check them out. Just the stones throw away from historic
Riggs Field. It's Alumni Hall Fall You're officially licensed Clempson merchandise, hats,
T shirts, still Gate gear and more. And don't forget
Clemson students, faculty, and military received ten percent off when
shopping in a store at Alumni Hall. Check them out
(35:33):
online in Alumni Hall dot com. All right, So, Jeff Cameron,
earlier in the week, we sat down with them to
talk about the Florida State seminoles, and I asked him
about bringing in a new offensive coordinator in Gus Mausan.
All right, Jeff, you must be reading my notes because
I have Gus Malson up next on my topics. And
(35:55):
one of the reasons I think it's important even still
for a guy like Mike nor Able to bring in
somebody like Malson is the experience of being the head coach.
And you know, when you look at Clemson staff, Dabosweeney's
got several coaches that have been head coaches at the
Power four level, and for Malson to be in this capacity,
(36:18):
I would say maybe more than anything, there might be
a little mentorship. Is that fair to say to some
degree because Normale is still a very young head coach.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
He is a young head coach.
Speaker 6 (36:30):
He's only forty three years old, and he actually, you know,
early in his career worked with Gus Malzon and he
does I think you used the right word mentorship. He
does look up to Gus in that capacity. You certainly
respects him, and I don't think he would have brought
him in otherwise. I think the only way that dynamic
works where you have a forty three year old head
(36:50):
coach who used to work for the guy you're bringing
into BDOC now, the only way that works is both
of them on the same page and have a respect
and understand each other. And Mike basically turned the offense
over to Gus upon hiring him. He basically said, I'll
step away. Mike's always been the primary play caller. He's
had a lot of success.
Speaker 5 (37:10):
He failed miserably last year.
Speaker 6 (37:12):
I think recognizes that being a head coach oftentimes means
you need to turn it over and be more of
a CEO. You've got to understand every facet of your
organization on and off the field, and you can't do
that while you're the primary play caller. In some cases,
some people can, but it's now becoming kind of the
norm to see coaches take a step back and allow
(37:32):
their coordinators to do their job while they oversee the
whole operation. And I think he's embraced that role. He's
openly talked about it. He hasn't shied away from that.
So this offense is going to succeed or fail solely
based on Gus miles On, his play calling, his implementation,
whichever offense or iteration of the offense he wants to
put in place, given the personnel this year, it's all
(37:55):
going to be on Gus Maleson. Obviously, Ultimately everything is
on the head coach and Mike Ravel, but he turned
the keys over to the offense to Gus Malson.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Jeff Cameron with us here for a few more minutes.
War Chant TV on YouTube the best way to find
him one to four daily talking about the Seminoles in
the Atlantic Coast Conference. So now I will turn the
attention towards the Clemson Tigers, the team I talk about
a lot, but I got some perspective from the state
of North Carolina last week. Now we go down to
the Sunshine State. So from your perspective looking at Clemson, listen,
(38:26):
the buzz is strange for me because the Tigers haven't
been this well thought of, perhaps since they walloped Alabama
in the National Championship at twenty eighteen. What are your
thoughts from the outside looking in at Clemson in terms
of what you expect from the Tigers this coming season.
Speaker 6 (38:44):
Well, I think everybody kind of raised an eyebrow towards
the end of last year when they realized that kid
Clubnick had figured it out and their real hope was,
especially with the rocky start to kid Klubnick's career at
Clemson in which he would just arbitrarily call his own
number and kind of go off script and do things
that they didn't want him to do, was that he
(39:05):
would never materialize. The problem is he has materialized, and
he got it last year and he became a guy
that you realized was going to be an elite quarterback
in college football. And lord knows, he's not suffering from
a lack of receivers to throw to. So when I
look at Clemson, I look at them as the best
team in the ACC. I look at them as a
team that I would sprinkle pizza money on to go
(39:26):
win a national championship. I would look at a team
that has all that experience, all those returning starters, and
say I think that they're the best team in the league,
and that I think they'll be in the College Football Playoff,
and I think that that's a team that you know,
everybody would have to gun forward to, you know, try
to knock off the in the AEC Championship.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
That's who I believed it to be.
Speaker 6 (39:46):
That's why I think that most for State fans when
they look at the big four games on the schedule,
and again I'll repeat for those that don't know, for
a state schedule, off the top, obviously it's Alabama, Miami, Clemson,
and Florida.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Those games were in.
Speaker 6 (40:00):
The order that they're played that I just laid out.
Nobody circles the third one, which is the game on
the road against Clemson and says, oh, yeah, fordesty can
win that game.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
The fan base doesn't.
Speaker 5 (40:10):
I don't.
Speaker 6 (40:12):
Obviously, stranger things have happened and is highly unlikely. So
I think Cleton is a team that you know, Forida
State will be behind in the ACC for sure, and
I don't think that's a real winnable game for the
Noles this.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Year, Jeff, final thing for you when you look at
the other main hire for Clempson bringing in Tom Allen,
you know, talking about hiring guys that have gotten it done.
What do you think his impact can be for Clemson
this year just based on what you've seen for him
during his time at Penn State.
Speaker 6 (40:40):
Well, look, you know, you bring in a defensive coordinator
with his resume, and you know, I think it's it's
foreboding for a lot of people in this league. You know.
I think the last time that anybody was thinking about
him from the perspective of like where he was headed,
they were thinking that he was upwardly mobile as a
head coach. It didn't work out in Indiana, but everybody
(41:03):
respects him very much as a defensive coordinator. So I
just think it makes people very nervous that Clemson has
a very good staff and a lot of really good players.
There's no way to dance around it. I think they recognize.
I mean, you've got a relatively young, very successful, aggressive coach.
I think it's a great move.
Speaker 5 (41:27):
I really do.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Yeah, fantastic, man. I know Tiger fans are gonna love it.
Always appreciate you. Keep up the great work agains Jeff
Cameron on Twitter at j Cameron Show war Chant TV.
If you're a Tiger fan and you want to peek
over the fence into the backyard and the Florida State seminoles,
there's no better place to do it than with Jeff Cameron.
Jeff always appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
My man, really enjoyed it lot.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
You'd be well, brother. I'll talk to you real soon.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
They go. Jeff Cameron again joining us from war Chant
TV to talk about the Florida State seminals. All right,
we had a quick break. We come back. We'll talk
with our buddy Jason Priester from The Clemson Insider about recruiting,
his thoughts on the job that Matt Luke is doing,
and much more. Where do the Tigers turn that running
back in this class as well the twenty twenty sixth class.
It is all right, keep it a lot right here
(42:11):
on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred around the world for
more Clemson sports Talk. On a Friday afternoon, it's time for.
Speaker 1 (42:20):
Clemson Sports Talk with Lawton Swan. Swanny.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
It is our number two that's drivetime right here on
the show to SHAKESPA Southland, Clemson Sports salt lot swan
hanging out with you on a Friday afternoon. Jason Priester
from The Clemson Insider joins us. In just a few minutes,
don't forget the show that shakes thea south Land and
brought you, in part our good friends over at Sing
it with me now, Met's Plumbing seven three two drip, drip,
(43:24):
drip drip. You know the jingle, seventh three to two drip.
That's Met's Plumbing, Mets Plumbing dot com, that's the website.
I really need somebody to sing that part for me
that I can't do. Met's Plumbing dot Com. I'd like
to think that's better. Probably not, but anyway. Jason Priester
joins us from the Clemson Insider. JP, what's up, buddy,
(43:45):
How are you?
Speaker 3 (43:46):
I'm doing just fine, man. How about yourself?
Speaker 2 (43:48):
I'm great. I'll tell you. The summer's moving right along,
and for fans of college football, that's always a good feeling.
But you know, I know a lot of people this
time of the year keeping their eyes on recruiting. I
know you cover for the Clemson Insider. Let me ask
you a little bit about the situation at running back
for Clemson right now and recruiting in the twenty twenty
sixth class, not a lot of offers out. They kind
(44:09):
of flirted with some of the top guys, but I
know Clemson's looking for the right fit. But with Jay
Lamar committing to Georgia earlier this week, it really opened
things up in terms of what the future looks like
for Clemson. Give me your insight into what you think
is going on with recruiting at running back right now,
and I'll carry it further with a question about CJ.
(44:29):
Spiller after you kind of give me some insight into
your thoughts on that.
Speaker 3 (44:34):
Yeah, you know, they've kind of taken some big swings
here since the beginning of the year with the offers
they've handed out the JVM Mallory kid, who committed to Miami,
you know, pretty quickly, not long after Clemson offered, So
then they you know, targeted the Carson Baker kid and
Jay Lamar to very highly touted backs in the class.
(44:56):
Baker decides he's not gonna even attend the official visit
weekend after visiting in the spring, so it kind of
ends up being you're you're chasing one guy in Lamar
who was always going to be a long shot to land.
You know, he's from Georgia, got you know, his entire
families Georgia fans. He was always going to be a
hard pool out of that state, and unsurprisingly he commits
(45:19):
to Georgia. So you know, it's gonna be interesting to
see which direction they decide to go here. You know,
I know they've kept in contact with a little with
running back CJ. Givers. Spiller went to one of his
spring practices. Jay Allen Terry's a guy that worked out
at camp. I talked to him the other day on
(45:42):
the phone and he says him is He and Spiller
talked very often, but that if I ought they wanted
to see more from him in his upcoming season before
they decided to offer. So, I mean, it's kind of
like at the point now where you kind of have
to reset, reevaluate, see what your options are, see who's
out there. The Mallory kids an interesting one because he's
(46:04):
kind of, you know, flirted with other schools since he's
been committed to Miami. Took a visit to Alabama, so
maybe he's not as solid as he might have appeared
to be. Earlier. We'll see if he holds there and
if Clemson would decide to go back after him, if
for some reason he did decide to open it up
back up.
Speaker 5 (46:23):
But it's gonna.
Speaker 3 (46:25):
Be interesting to see which direction they go here, you know,
after they get this thing reevaluated.
Speaker 2 (46:31):
So you mentioned CJ. Givers. He's three star prospect committed
to Duke, And you know, I think a lot of
people look at Clemson versus Duke and they say, how
in the world couldn't you get that guy? And again,
he's not a four star, and I think you probably
want to go get a four star if possible. But
you know, there have been plenty of guys that were
no stars. Hunter Andfro a prime example. That sort of
(46:52):
pops up for a lot of Clemson people. And you
start talking or going down that pap it JP from
that standpoint, I mean, do you feel like the Clemson
profile should still be enough and would they in an
era where they've often talked about what commitment means, go
out and pursue guys like that and still bring them in.
I mean, do you see Clemson going out and flipping
(47:15):
a commit like that?
Speaker 3 (47:18):
Well, I mean we're talking about givers specifically, probably he'd
probably have to be the one to initiate at this
point since he's committed. He's just a guy, a k
new spiller that went and visited but or or at
least watched practice there in the spring. But you know,
that's a hard question to answer. You know, each case
(47:38):
is a little bit different. But generally speaking, if you're
going after a guy that's already committed a lot of
times with Clipson, you know that the player would have
to kind of initiate that. But we've seen clips and
flip some guys in the past. They flipped a couple
last year. Tucker Cadis the offensive lineman comes to mind.
You know, he was committed to Kentucky before he ended
(48:00):
up flipping light to Clemson. So I mean, it's not
like it's something they haven't done. But a lot of
times if a guy's committed that that that's a situation
where you know, maybe they would have to kind of
get the ball rolling instead of the coaches to have it.
It's all, It all just depends on who you're talking about. Me.
Each situation is a little bit different.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
Now I've called it a money year. Jason. By the way,
Jason Priester from The Clemson Insider with US talking recruiting
and college football here on a Friday afternoon. I've called
this a money year for CJ. Spiller, and I'm not
saying he's a guy that you would fire given kind
of his profile, but I can see him maybe getting elevated,
especially if things don't work out at running back this year.
It's a loaded room. There's a lot of pressure on
(48:43):
Gideon Davidson. They've they've brought in Adam Randall now to
play running back, which he showed some promise at times.
What are your thoughts on that running back room as
a whole at this point under CJ. Spiller? I would
argue it hasn't been as productive as it was when
Tony Elliott was in charge. But you might say, hey,
the talent hasn't been as great as what Tonielli had either,
(49:05):
But at some point that's also got to fall on Spiller.
So what do you think?
Speaker 3 (49:09):
I think so far it's kind of been a little
bit of a mixed bag with Spiller. You know, there's
been some good and there's been some not so good.
I think I think the production, the production at running
back last year would follow or fall under the not
so good department. Once MafA got hurt, you really didn't
have anybody else ready that you could turn to that
(49:30):
you fully trusted. That was evidence by them continuing to
play Maf of why you know he was obviously injured.
Hopefully that is a lesson learned and they don't find
themselves in that same spot this year. You know, you
need multiple running bates that you can turn to because,
as you know, you never know when a guy is
gonna get hurt. Plus you that you don't want to
(49:52):
wear a guy down by over relying on him. But
there's some little bit of talent in that room's just unproven.
You know, I've always been a big believer in a
Zuyuma may. He was very productive in high school, one
of those guys that maybe just needed a year to
kind of acclimate to the college level. Had a pretty
(50:13):
good spring game. Still runs a little bit up high,
you know, are too high for me at times. And
we could hear Dabbo getting on him in the spring
game about boss security and stuff, and you know, when
you're running high like that, it's easier to poke that
ball out. But just little things that he probably needed
to improve on before he's fully ready. If you can
(50:33):
have that guy ready and get in Davidson, you know,
be what everybody thinks he's going to be. The possibility
there for this to be a pretty good running game,
especially when you factor in Adam Randall, you know, like
you say, he showed some promise against Texas. Didn't see
a ton of him in the spring game, but a
(50:54):
lot of positive reviews coming out of the spring for him.
So I mean, if you can get three back that
you can rely on, and I think the possibility is
there for that, then then maybe you got something to
work with.
Speaker 2 (51:06):
There now for the future. Jason, I will ask, could
this be a situation that Clemson looks to address maybe
through the portal.
Speaker 3 (51:14):
I mean, Dabo showed us this year that he will
definitely go to the portal if he feels that that
there's a need there. You know. I think a lot
of that might depend on what happens in the rest
of the way and this recruiting class have some how
some of those guys that's already on the roster, you know,
kind of develop over the upcoming season. I wouldn't rule
(51:37):
it out totally, you know, but if these guys develop
at the pace they're expecting them to develop, then maybe
you don't need to do that, particularly if you can
find a guy you like in this class. You know,
I get they just missed on Lamar, and a lot
of guys have already made the decisions on where they
think they're gonna go, you know, following their high school careers.
But there's a long way to go till signing day still,
(51:59):
so we've got to see how that plays out.
Speaker 2 (52:01):
First, Jason Priestro with the shore on the program, So
the expectations for the offense are through the roof obviously
with Kay Klumnick, and really the wide receiver room is
the the other real standout for this group. But you know,
a big part of the passing game when Clemson was
really successful was the tight end room. What do you
think about the tight end situation for the Tigers this year?
(52:22):
Obviously kind of a unique piece being brought up from
basketball and Ian Shefflin. I don't think it's necessarily a
need to bring him over, but it's an opportunity for
him to make some money maybe playing collegiately still, and
he wasn't going to be somebody that was drafted in
the NBA as we saw. But all that being said,
I mean, what are your thoughts on that tight end room?
And are you as high on Christian Bettencore as a
(52:44):
lot of people are, even though he's a young guy.
Speaker 5 (52:47):
I am.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
I think he's got a world of potential. You know,
I also like Olson pat Henry. You know, he showed
a lot of flashes last year. I would fully expect
to be the guy wants to see the starts. But
I think bat and Care is gonna eventually prove to
be a guy that's gonna be hard to keep off
the field. You know, he's long, he's athletic. I can
(53:11):
envision him being a guy that can excel and Garrett
Riley's offense, particularly with a veteran quarterback, veteran offensive line,
and you know all those receivers around him. Yeah. I
am extremely high on Betton Care. I've loved it. I
love that signing when they landed him. I think he's
kind of he might be the future of that room.
(53:32):
No offense to anybody else in that room. I just
think he might have the highest ceiling of the bunch
that's in there currently.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
And what do you think they can get from Shefflin
this year. I mean, you think you're gonna see him
in in like legit game action.
Speaker 4 (53:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (53:48):
It's kind of a fascinating story. You know, we're out
there a couple of weeks ago at camp, and not
only is he out there working the camp, but he's
kind of taking part in it too. You know, he's
doing the drills, working on footwork, trying to you know,
he's not played football in a long time since either
(54:08):
middle school or early in his high school career. You know,
it's been a few years, so he's kind of he
was out there kind of polishing up some of his
skills and it was fun to watch. But we're talking
about guy, a guy that six foot eight.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
Yeah, he's a monster.
Speaker 3 (54:23):
He would be absolutely impossible to cover, particularly down there
into reds. I can you know, maybe they decided to
use him as a red zone target. I mean, I
don't expect him to go out there and play forty
to fifty snaps a game. I could envision a scenario
in which they create, you know, a couple of packages
for him and see what he can do. Either way,
(54:45):
it should be fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (54:47):
I mean, he's gotta be like It's one thing if
you're a six eight kid like you, like, who's the
who's the second tallest person on the roster right now?
I think maybe on the defensive line there's a six
seven Darien Mayo right Like. It's working to take a
guy like that and try to convert him to play
tight end versus a basketball athlete like Cheflin and allowing
(55:12):
him the opportunity. The only problem Shefflin I would think
would have is that he's got to wear the helmet
and shoulder pads. But I mean he's athletic is all
get out.
Speaker 3 (55:21):
Yeah he is, and he is certainly used to kind
of banging with the big guys down low on the hardwood.
I mean, it shouldn't be all too different for him
once he gets on the football field. I mean, and again,
it's not like he's never played before played. He played.
He went to the same high school as film Offa
(55:42):
there at Grayson, So I mean, it's just a matter
of getting those skills polished up. You know, it is
going to be a lot to do in a short
amount of time. He's really only got fall camp to
kind of get settled in and adjust, so it'll probably
be a lot to learn and just a little bit
of time, But it'll be fun to watch him out
there if he can, if they can put some packages
(56:02):
together for him and he can pick things up and
get out there and make a few catches and help
this team and even in just a little way this year.
Speaker 2 (56:10):
Again, he's Jason Priester from the Clemson Insider, hanging out
with us today, talking a little college football about your
Clemson Tigers. Follow him on Twitter at jp Underscore Priester.
All right, so where would you say, Jason, this wide
receiver room is in terms of maybe, when's the last
time you felt this good about a wide receiver room
(56:31):
in Tigertown.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
It's been a while, you know, that's kind of been
one of the humps they've had to get over the
past few years. Some of the receivers that have come
through just haven't lived up. The expectations, haven't developed or whatever.
You know, it just hasn't been what it was during
those playoff runs, you know, when they won a couple
of national titles. But I think this room can rank
(56:53):
right up there with some of the better ones they've
had under Davos Sweeney. I mean, you've got Antonio Williams
coming back for his scene. Your year finished just under
a thousand yards last year, and then you add those two,
you know, guys that were freshman last year, Bryant Westcove
TJ Moore. I think, you know, as good as Westco
was last year. I think Moore is gonna have a
(57:14):
breakout campaign this year. I mean I think he's you know,
now that he's got a year under his belt, he's
gonna take a big jump. And then you get Tyler
Brown back help. He's kind of been the forgotten man
in that room. He was, Yeah, nobody talked somebody since
he was heard all last year, and they brought Tristan
Smith in, so he's kind of been forgotten about. This
(57:35):
is a guy that led the team in receiving yards
as a freshman the year before last. I mean, so
you got him coming back, and then you know the
big transfer of Tristan Smith. Anybody that was on hand
for the spring game saw his potential. I mean, you
get the big, long, athletic guy on the outside can
go up and get a high point in the ball.
You know, they just haven't had a guy like that
(57:56):
in the past few years. He kind of adds something
that's been missing over the past three or four years,
and I think he's gonna have a big impact. I mean,
this group of receivers that they had the chance to
have a special season, you know it. You got all
that experience on the offensive line, and you got the
experienced quarterback, and you add those experienced receivers. I mean,
(58:20):
this offense should really harm this year.
Speaker 2 (58:23):
How do you think they go about tempering the expectations?
I mean, because I've said here, I don't remember the
expectations for Clemson being this high since they beat Alabama
forty four to sixteen to win the national title. In
the thought process of what they would be in twenty
nineteen where they went undefeated in the National Championship against LSU.
I can't recall a year since then where people believe
(58:45):
in this team the way they believe in them right now.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
Yeah, that I've seen a lot of fans that are that,
you know, that worry about the preseason hype they're getting,
you know, and I get that that's justifiable. I understand it.
But fortunately, you know, there is a lot of veteran
leadership on this team. That's a big part of why
they're getting so much of this hype. You got a
bunch of under excuse me, upperclassmen that are gonna be,
(59:10):
you know, playing for this team this year. I think
they've been around long enough, you know, to kind of
know how things work, know not to you know, get
the big head from reading their own press clippings. And
I think he got a lot of guys that are
hungry this year. You know, they got a little taste
of it last year, making the playoff for the first
time in a few years, getting the early accent. They
(59:33):
got a little taste of it, and I think a
lot of those players on that roster want more this year.
Players like you know, Peter Woods, TJ. Parker, Antonio Williams,
Cade club that, you know, guys that have been around
for a little bit now. They kind of want to
get this program back to where it was, you know,
when they were younger. They all watched Clemson and what
(59:55):
they were able to accomplish there and that run of
playoff appearances in the two National Tis, and I think
a lot of those guys want to help get Clemson
back to that. So I think that's I think that
has beneficial when you have these kind of expectations, it's
beneficial to have that type of veteran leadership.
Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
Jason, final thing, we got about two minutes. We'll stay
on the offensive side of the ball. We'll get you
back on one day down the road to talk about
the defense. But Kate Klubnick, I mean a couple of
years ago. Every time he's in the game, he looks
like a like a puppy man with somebody holding a
frisbee in front of him, just ready to get after it.
And it seemed like he really matured last year. I mean,
(01:00:36):
where do you think he'll be coming out of the
gates this season with the expectations surrounding him.
Speaker 3 (01:00:41):
Yeah, he's been fund It's been fun to watch him
grow into what he's become. I'll be the first to
admit it took him longer to get there then I
thought it would. He was a guy I thought was shine,
you know, his first year as a full time starter,
but he didn't. He struggled. But his growth that has
been fun to watch. You can almost see the game
(01:01:03):
slowing down for him. Literally, this team's gonna go as
far as he takes. You know, we can talk about
the receivers, the running backs, the offensive line, the defense, whatever,
but it starts and stops with k Clubnick. You know, fortunately,
I think he's a guy that's got a good head
on his shoulders. You know, you listen to him talk
(01:01:23):
about some of his struggles, you know, from his first year,
and how he's used that to fuel his growth. You know,
I expect a big season from him. Whether it's a
Heisman type season, I don't know. I don't know that
you need that kind of season.
Speaker 5 (01:01:37):
Out of him.
Speaker 3 (01:01:37):
But he's gonna be kind of a straw that stirs
the drink. And with those weapons he's got around him
in that passing game, I think this this offense is
gonna be hard to handle this year.
Speaker 2 (01:01:50):
On Twitter again at JP Underscore Priester Jason Priester from
the Clubson insider Jason Man, have a great weekend. Thanks, Hey,
appreciate it. Love There you go, Jason Priester from the Club.
It's an insider here on the show that Shakes the
south Land, Clemson Sports Talk on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred.
So we talked about the NBA Draft the other day.
Round two was last night, but man, round one had
(01:02:12):
a crazy move. We'll tell you about when we return.

So we talked a little bit about the NBA Draft
yesterday in Round two took place on Thursday night, and
again I thought uneventful quite frankly, But the big story
(01:03:16):
that really came out of the NBA Draft, other than
the fact that Cooper Flag is going to Dallas and
the hope for Dallas faithful that maybe he'll be a
future star in the league, along the likes of the
direction that Luka Doncinz star is traveling.
Speaker 5 (01:03:35):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:03:37):
But there was a trade that took place in the
first round. We didn't get to this yesterday, but it's
being considered perhaps the worst trade and maybe the worst
move that's ever been made by the New Orleans Pelicans.
Not well, let me rephrase that, maybe not the worst
move ever made by the New Orleans Pelicans, but maybe
(01:03:59):
the worst trade that a lot of individuals, a lot
of individuals who cover the NBA feel like they've ever seen,
at least within the past decade. So here's what happened.
After selecting Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears at number seven, the
(01:04:21):
New Orleans Pelicans moved up from number twenty three to
number thirteen. Now not necessarily a terrible move, right, you're
gonna get two of the top thirteen picks in the draft,
but in order to do so, the Pelicans sent the
Atlanta Hawks the draft rights to Asa Newell, the number
(01:04:41):
twenty three overall selection, and an unprotected this is the
big part, an unprotected twenty twenty six first round pick,
and that was a pretty heavy price to pay because
the Hawks will receive the better first round pick between
the Pelicans and the mill w Haukee Bucks due to
(01:05:02):
a previous clause in the Drew Holiday trade that was
completed back in twenty twenty, so if you reverse it
to move down ten spots, the Hawks were offered an
unprotected first round pick from the Pelicans, who finished twenty
one and sixty one last year, or they'll get the
(01:05:24):
first round pick from a team in Milwaukee that could
be moving on from Giannis Antikken Tupo, and they'll get
which everyone is better. Some people calling it the worst
non Luca Division trade that they've ever seen. It's also
(01:05:46):
worth mentioning that the other part of this trade, with
the thirteenth pick, the Pelicans selected former Maryland center Derrick Queen,
who they must really believe in. Here's some response to
that trade. Here's Nick right in his comments, calling it
a reckless trade by the New Orleans Pelicans.
Speaker 7 (01:06:07):
Wow, that might be the most reckless Draft day trade
I've seen in five years. normOn traded away next year's
first round pick unprotected to move up from twenty three
to thirteen, with absolutely no due respect. Who the hell
does New Orleans think they are you cannot. If you're
New Orleans trade away next year's first round pick unprotected,
(01:06:31):
you could be terrible. I know you don't want to
think you can be terrible, but you absolutely could be terrible.
New Orleans won twenty one games last year. What are
they thinking? Oh my god, Joe Dumars, they might have
just traded the number one pickup next year's draft. It's
Milwaukee or New Orleans, the best of those. Even if
(01:06:53):
New Orleans like, no, it's not gonna problem because we're
gonna be good. What if Milwaukee trades Giannis or he
gets injured and they're terrible, then that pick goes. I
am flabbergasted by that.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
Here's Bill Simmons, who is an NBA expert and really
a fun guy to follow in sports, talking about the
same deal.
Speaker 8 (01:07:18):
This was when I lost my mind. I think I
blacked out. I'm so glad the NBA can still give us.
These New Orleans trades up ten spots so they can
take Derek Queen, and they give up their unprotected twenty
twenty six first round pick swap that they have with Milwaukee,
where they have the favorable whatever the better pick is
they keep. They send that to Atlanta, who had to
be deliriously happy, like, we only have to move down
(01:07:41):
ten spots and we get an unprotected This was one
of the five dumbest trades of this decade.
Speaker 5 (01:07:47):
I was speechless.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
I just can't believe it. And who is it?
Speaker 8 (01:07:52):
It's our guy, Joe Dumars, and now he just traded away.
They're unprotected twenty twenty six pick house, they're in the way.
Does he think's gonna happen next year?
Speaker 2 (01:08:02):
See think they're gonna be a five seed?
Speaker 5 (01:08:04):
What is he doing?
Speaker 8 (01:08:05):
They should have shown the Hawks war room as guys
are taking their shirts off doing this and popping champagne
on each other. They might have the championship belt. Now
the biggest mess of a team, I think this is it.
I think giving away next year's first round pick and
making it unprotected, I think they grabbed the belt.
Speaker 2 (01:08:21):
So they got a couple of thoughts from experts on
the topic, and again that pick is. The beauty of
that pick for New Orleans was that if they were
bad or if Milwaukee was bad, they get the better
of the two, which means, if you're drafting that you
took this year goes out and you play well and
(01:08:44):
then Milwaukee is in the tank because they move Giannis
or something like that. You'd still get a great pick,
a building block. Now you've given it up to the Hawks,
and the Hawks are the team that could truly benefit
from it. So yeah, that move raised a ton of
eyebrows around the NBA. And again, to move ten spots
(01:09:11):
to get a questionable center, you give up a chance
of having the number one pick in the NBA draft
next season. Let Dumars cook. I guess, as the kids
would say, Let Joe Dumars cook. I don't think it's
gonna work out well. All right, quick break, When we
come back, the ACC kickoff, put out the teams and
(01:09:35):
dates that they will be in Charlotte. We'll give you
the rundown of that. We don't have the players yet.
When that comes available, we'll tell you that as well.
Here on the show that Shakes the South Land. But
whin's Clemson go? I'll let you know right after this
London swad with you on a Friday afternoon. So last year,
the ACC obviously expanded to add SMU cal and Stanford,
and that was certainly a unique move, I think it's
(01:10:01):
fair to say. But the other thing that changed for
members of the media such as myself, was the fact
that the Atlantic Coast Conference expanded the week at the
ACC kickoff from just two days to four. It doubled.
Speaker 4 (01:10:18):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:10:18):
The media must not have liked the lengthy stay there
in Charlotte, because they have streamlined the schedule. So a
year ago, we had the Commissioners Forum on day one
on a Monday, with Florida State, Georgia Tech, and SMU.
Then on day two we had cal Pitt, Stanford, Virginia,
(01:10:39):
and Virginia Tech. On Wednesday you got Boston College, Duke Louisville,
Miami in wake Forest, and then on Thursday you got Clemson,
North Carolina, n C State, and Syracuse And it was
a grind. So the ACC has pulled that schedule back
this year to just three days. And so here's what
(01:11:01):
it looks like with all seventeen schools being in attendance
with players from each school. So on Tuesday you'll get
the Commissioner's Form. That's July the twenty second, we'll hear
from cal Miami, SMU, Stanford, and Virginia. Then on Wednesday,
(01:11:21):
July the twenty third, you'll get Florida State, Georgia, Tech, Louisville,
Pitt Syracuse, and Wake Forest. And then on Thursday, July
the twenty fourth, you get Boston College, Clemson, Duke, North Carolina,
n C State, and Virginia Tech. Now have a hunch
(01:11:42):
about how they do this, so Tuesday you get the
commissioners for them, which a lot of people like to
be there for that for sure. You also put in
Miami and SMU, two teams that would generate a level
of interest from the Nashal standpoint, given the years they
had a season ago. You do add the two schools
(01:12:06):
from California and callen Stanford that day that maybe allows
their media members to travel and just be there and
go home. Cover the two California schools then go home.
And then with Virginia you add in the mix of
Tony Elliott for the Clemson Faithful, which might invite Clemson
media members to go and cover Virginia on Tuesday, extending
(01:12:30):
their week to three days. Then you follow that up
on Wednesday with Florida State, who we've talked about a
good bit over the past week, and also Georgia Tech
with very high expectations along with Louisville this year, Georgia
Tech the highest expectations in my opinion, outside of what
Seminal Faith will have for their own program. But you
(01:12:52):
get that on Wednesday, and then you book Clemson on
Friday or should be on Thursday, hoping that people that
came in on two Tuesday, we'll say, all right, we
got the big story in college football is gonna be
the Tigers. We got to wait for Clemson, so we'll
be here all week. So Clempson is the dangling carrot
at the end of the week that they hope people
(01:13:14):
will come in for the Commissioner's form on Tuesday. Now,
my plan, because July to twenty second is my anniversary,
My plan this year, given the schedules, probably to just
do Wednesday Thursday and skip out O Cow, Miami, SMU, Stanford,
and Virginia. But if I do decide to do the
whole week, at least it's the middle of the week.
(01:13:36):
You know, you can do something on Monday and do
something on Friday, and you kind of you know what
I'm saying, Like there's a benefit there to the way
they've got it scheduled up in my opinion. But yeah,
so I thought last week was a real grind. As
a matter of fact, I remember by the fourth day
(01:13:57):
last week, I was just beat down. I was so tired.
And it will be a bit of a car wash
where you got five schools on Tuesday, six on Wednesday,
and six on Thursday. It's not terrible. It's not terrible,
but that's the layout of it. Clemson'll be on Thursday,
July the twenty fourth, and you can, of course expect
(01:14:19):
a lot of audio from us over the following week
after the ACC kickoff, as we put a lot of
information in the can from the Commissioner's Forum, which will
certainly carry here for you as the you know, the
state of college football, the tumultuous off seasons that we've
had in the past. Heck, we've been on the floor
at the ACC kickoff when the news broke of Texas
(01:14:42):
and Oklahoma leaving the Big twelve to go to the
SEC like That's one of the things that I guess
in the world of college football when you talk about
breaking news moments where we've been on the scene at
a huge event like that. To have that unfold during
(01:15:02):
the ACC kickoff several years ago, man, that was it.
I just remember the wild times of people going through it,
and of course You've also got the SEC Media Days
coming up as well, and that will run earlier this
year than usual. Typically that event has been has coincided
(01:15:25):
with the ACC's kickoff event in some way, shape or form,
but the Southeastern Conference will handle their media days July
the fourteenth through July the seventeenth. It will be a
four day affair for game got fans peeking over the
fence and hanging out with us. Hey, you know we
always appreciate you, so you could.
Speaker 6 (01:15:46):
Continue to peek over the fence at the best radio
showing the.
Speaker 2 (01:15:49):
Naked Monday July the fourteenth will be the big day
to focus there because not only will Shane Beemer be
at the docket, but Brian Kelly Lsu, who open with
the Clemson Tigers, will meet with the media. Old Missus,
Lane Kiffin and Clark Lee from Vanderbilt will go on
Day one Monday July the fourteenth. Tuesday, it'll be Auburn's
(01:16:11):
Hugh Freeze, George's Kirby Smart, Tennessee's Josh Hipel, and Steve
Sarkisian from Texas. On Wednesday, July the sixteenth, you'll get
Kellen de bordt Alabama Billy Napier at Florida, Jeff Leby
at Mississippi State, and Brent Vnables at Oklahoma. And then
on July the seventeenth, you'll have Sam Pittman at Arkansas,
Mark Stoops at Kentucky, Eli Drinkwitz at Missouri, and Mike
(01:16:35):
Elko at Texas A and M. And if there's one
thing that you have to recognize when you look at
the list of coaches in the SEC, Brian Kelly, Lane Kiffin,
Hugh Freeze, Kirby Smart, Josh Hipel, Steve Sarkisian Kellen de Boor,
Billy Napier, Brent Vinnables, Mike Elko, Eli drinkwoodz Man. Those
(01:16:55):
are some names, and I skipped some. I left off
Shane Beemer two yeah, game got you heard me. But
those other dudes and Beamers I think a good coach,
no doubt. But I mean there are some names in
that conference as head coaches. One hundred, All right, quick break,
we'll come back. Will throw a bow on the show
The shakeseare South Lane here on a Friday afternoon, keep
(01:17:17):
a lock on Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred.
Speaker 9 (01:17:22):
What have you done for me lately? It's a fair question.
Just don't lose sight of the bigger picture, don't forget history.
Lucky for us at Clemson, the answer to the questions
what have you done for me lately? And what have
you done? Always are the same. We win.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
Final segment on a Friday afternoon Clemson Sports one Man.
Great to catch up with Jason Priester just a little
bit ago. Now, obviously, with college football on the bring,
the NFL season is also upon us. We'll be here soon.
(01:18:57):
But you know, one of the things that blew my mind.
I had to go back and look the cost of
NFL Sunday ticket. Three hundred and seventy eight dollars for
(01:19:20):
NFL Sunday ticket. And I've gotten it in the past
couple of years. I don't remember it being that expensive.
I definitely think it has bloomed up in the expense
column over the past few years. But if you're if
you're having trouble justifying it like me, at three hundred,
I mean, that's a good bit of money, right. It
ain't cheap. It's definitely not cheap. Here's the way I
(01:19:48):
go about justifying this in my in my pea brain.
Let me tell you and you you hit me up.
If I'm wrong eight O three four five zero zero
eighty six. If I'm wrong, you let me know. Here's
the way I look at it. So I can't get
to a Jacksonville Jaguars game all that easy. But even
(01:20:13):
if I could, Let's say I wanted to go see
Trevor Lawrence play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and some of
you might be might be in the Jacksonville area listening
to this show, and you might have season tickets. It's
a banking area. There's a lot of money in that area.
(01:20:34):
And if you got season tickets to the Jacksonville Jaguars, congratulations.
If you're not going to a game, hit your boy up.
Can I get some discount of tickets? But that's the
way I that's the only way I can really justify it.
They're the main team I want to follow. They're the
main team I want to watch at this point, especially
(01:20:55):
with Trevor Lawrence and Travis etn. But even if they
weren't a reason for me to watch, and really I
don't think I would desire Sunday ticket if those two
guys weren't together, And maybe if Trevor Lawrence wasn't in
the NFL I still believe he's gonna be one of
the best quarterbacks in the league, maybe over the next decade.
(01:21:16):
And I think, you know, it's fun to watch him play.
So here's how I justify it, though. Let's just pick
a random game. Let's go Week one against Carolina Panthers.
Let's say I told the wife and kids, Hey, you
know what, Let's pack up the car let's drive to
Jacksonville for a game, and let's sit. Let's sit in
(01:21:41):
the upper deck and midfield upper deck and watch Carolina
and Jacksonville. And there are seats available currently, but those
tickets upper level fifty yard line virtually is high. You
can go in the stadium cost one hundred bucks a pop,
(01:22:06):
and that's without the fees. And so if you ring
those up alone, you're at four hundred just to get
into the joint, just to hang out. You're more than
what the Sunday ticket is for the entire season. And
that's for for literally some of the worst seats in
(01:22:28):
the house. Now, let's say that you want to take
your kids, and you want to you said, hey, kids, look,
it's been a good year. Let's go see Trevor Lawrence play.
Let's sit on the home side stands, and let's get
(01:22:49):
some reasonably well located seats. Right one ticket singular four
one hundred and eighty six dollars and forty two cent
one ticket. Now there are bad tickets, I guess you'd
(01:23:11):
call them.
Speaker 1 (01:23:12):
That.
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
You can get in to the game for sixty eight
dollars a pop. That's the cheapest. That's the cheapest you
can get. That's gonna still push you before fees and everything.
That's still gonna push you right under three hundred dollars
before fees. So what's that two seventy four? Something like that?
Speaker 6 (01:23:35):
There?
Speaker 2 (01:23:35):
There I go doing math on the radio. Swani.
Speaker 5 (01:23:38):
You want answers.
Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
I think I'm entitled. You want answer the truth. You
can't handle the truth. Don't do math on the radio.
Two seventy four. I think I'm on it. But anyway,
like that's how I can justify it. Like I don't
want that expense. But if I were to take my
kids to a game, and look, there's there's an experience
(01:24:00):
that you get that money can't buy, right, you'd say, oh,
but the experience with your kids, I get that, but
I would rather go have some other great experiences with
my children that are a little bit less expensive and
all of us if we want two kids sent around
and enjoy the Jacksonville Jaguars or for that matter, every game.
That's how I justified it, even though the price is
(01:24:22):
much higher. Look what it costs to go to a game.
Holy cow. All right, we'll be back on Monday until
they is always y'all, take care now and go Tigers.
